Charges plan at help centre RESIDENTS' help-points in Bognor Regis and Chichester could be the first in the country to offer will writing.

The area's Citizens Advice centres are looking at expanding their activities to include those which would see clients being charged.

If they go-ahead, the proposals will be unique among the 300 independent charities which run the centres around the country.

The scheme would exclude the current activities of the centres to which people turn for help with job and debt problems.

But it is seen as a way to generate extra funding to enable those activities to be maintained and to overcome any cutbacks in council funding.

The prospect of the pioneering work was revealed by the outgoing chief executive of the Arun and Chichester

Citizens Advice.

Carol Groves said: “We have got to look at diversifying our funding. We are now looking at setting up chargeable services for will writing and creating powers of attorney.

“We have to get permission from the national association to do that and we have to put together a business case.

“It is nothing to do with our current work but a way of finding other sources

of funding.

“We have a relationship manager with the national association and, as far as he knows, nobody else is doing that, though some centres do employment law as a chargeable service.”

Sexual crimes against girl see two Bognor men jailed TWO BOGNOR REGIS men have been sentenced for sexual offences against a teenage girl.

Michael Bissett, below left, and George Lawrence, below right, were jailed for their part in assaulting the then 15-year-old.

Last week, at Salisbury Crown Court, Judge Parkes sentenced Bissett to eight months at a youth offender institute with a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

Bissett had been charged with engaging in penetrative sexual activity and rape of a girl aged under 16.

He had earlier been found guilty of

penetrative sexual activity but not guilty of rape.

Judge Parkes sentenced Lawrence to ten years on two counts of rape to be served concurrently with an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and placed him on the sexual offenders' register.

Detective Constable Jo French said the two men had taken advantage of the girl.

"The girl told her mum what had happened and it was reported to us. We will always take such reports seriously, will take action wherever possible and have worked to make sure the victim's voice was heard and the men faced justice.

"The victim showed great courage to give evidence during the trial. I would urge others who have been victims of sexual abuse to come forward and report what happened to us," she said.

The offence happened on July 6, 2015, at an address in central Bognor Regis.

Bissett, of Lyon Street, was 17 at the time and Lawrence was 18.

He was of no fixed address but from the Bognor Regis area.

They faced a seven-day trial by jury at Winchester Crown Court in October and were remanded in custody to await sentence on December 19.

STRONG criticism has been made that plans for a town centre park in Bognor Regis will put residents at risk from fire.

Bognor Regis Civic Society and town resident Henry Smart have warned the latest proposals for the Hothamton linear park are seriously flawed.

They say the emergency access road to the Fitzleet tower block, between the flats and the current car park, will be replaced by parking under Arun District Council's proposals backed this month.

This would make it impossible for fire and rescue services to get close to the tower block in the event of an emergency, like Grenfell Tower in London this year.

Hugh Coster, the society's deputy chairman, said: "This is monumentally incompetent, not only because of the dangerously short-sighted and callous disregard of public safety but even more so, because they had been explicitly warned of the dangers. Yet they did not even debate the matter but simply ignored it and twittered about water features and other minor details - and then rubber-stamped the whole thing without further comment.

"The truth is their incompetent design has lost up to 76 car parking spaces for the town and they are desperate to claw some back so as not to lose face - or money."

The society is also critical of Arun spending more than £3.5m on work it claims will bring little benefit to the town, just to enable 100 flats to be built.

Mr Coster said that was shown at this month's meeting of Arun's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee.

"Cllr Trevor Bence gave the game away when he said the project was all about money and profit. They are only concerned about profit and anything that gets in the way will be ignored.

"Cllr Paul Wells was the only member to raise concerns but he was also ignored, which was scandalous," said Mr Coster.

Mr Smart said Arun's original claims to be keeping the 215 parking spaces in the current Hothamton site had been wiped out in the current design.

The detailed engineering plan showed only 132 spaces, minus the 20 on the emergency fire access, to reduce the capacity to 61 per cent of the current number - in spite of residents calling for the number to be kept or increased.

In addition, the new flats will add to the demand for parking. the roads created to link the parking which will line the park will create short cuts for motorists.

"The new spine roads will provide two rat runs allowing vehicles to avoid the Queensway pelican crossing and Argyle Road. A similar situation had to be remedied at considerable cost nearby i the town," he added.

An Arun spokeswoman said all feedback and comments about the plans would be considered. "As a reasonable authority, we will accommodate any legal obligations placed upon the council and the advice of the fire service and other relevant agencies as the scheme continues to evolve," she said. The council regarded the continued 'glass half-empty approach' of the society to the town's regeneration as disappointing.

GLOVES and scarves were collected by caring Felpham Community College students to help homeless people in the area.

The Year 9 pupils wanted to help their local community and co-ordinate their tutor group collections for its vulnerable people.

Each tutor group collected a wide range of food and goods they believed homeless and vulnerable people would benefit from in winter.

These were packed into class-made hampers and included gloves, scares and even a handmade pillow.

The hampers were delivered to the

charity, Stonepillow, which works with homeless people around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Year 9 leader at the college, Sarah Reeves, said: "Our students decided to do this as a year group and we were proud of what a good collection we managed. The end of term is always busy at Felpham. So, for students to use their own time for this is lovely to see.

"We do a lot as a school for charity.

The past half-term alone, we took part in the Bognor Regis Foodbank collection, the Christmas shoebox collection and held a non-uniform day."

Seaside images help to brighten hoarding

The promenade bandstand and a bathing machine have been painted on either end of the southern hoarding around a former fish and chip shop.

The nostalgic images bookend a giant ‘Beside The Seaside’ quote which takes up most of the 2.4m high and 30m long space. Among the words are further symbols of the seaside such as a bucket and spade, a beach ball and a starfish.

Brighton-based street artist Sarah Gillings finished off her latest artwork in the town last week with the help of two assistants. Sarah, whose street name is SOS, said: “The bandstand and the bathing machine are representations of Bognor Regis as a seaside town.

“As landmarks, I wanted to put them

into the design layout to make it more interactive with people.

“It’s all about the iconography that makes one think of the seaside. They are the sort of images you would see on a vintage postcard. But there is also a lot of investment going on in the town and I hope people will think of that when they see this as well.”

It took the three artists three days with spray paint spread over two weeks to create the latest images on the hoarding between Waterloo Square and Norfolk Street.

Sarah has created two previous images on the hoarding in the past 14 months.

The first at Waterloo Square’s southern end was on wooden panels installed to hide some empty buildings.

This was damaged soon after in a fierce blaze in November, 2016, which

destroyed the neighbouring fish and chip shop on the northern side of The Esplanade and the former nightclub on the upper floors. A replacement painting was created by Sarah and students from The Regis School last July.

But the south-facing hoarding stayed blank until the Bognor Regis Trust and Bognor Regis Town Council combined to pay for the latest project of some £2,000.

Trust chairman Paul Wells said: “It’s about bringing to life a derelict corner and it will, hopefully, brighten up the seafront. It will be nice to have some new life breathed into this site but, in the meantime, this painting will be better than looking at a blank hoarding.”

Trust project director Ken Blamires said its share of the funding came from a £9,970 Awards For All grant from the National Lottery.

At present, the centres receive £304,792 in annual funding from councils in their areas towards the total income of £508,000. Some of the rest comes from backing for research projects.

But she said it was recognised by the centre's trustees that councils were finding their funding restricted.

Rustington resident Mrs Groves, 63, is retiring at the end of January.

She joined Citizen's Advice as the manager of the Littlehampton centre in December, 2000, after she had worked as the office manager of an accountancy company.

She became the chief executive when the three centres merged in October, 2009, to deliver a legal services contract and to combine their resources. They have 21 full and parttime staff and 130 volunteers.

She said: “I wanted to do something for the community and make a difference to people. It's been absolutely worthwhile. I would not have missed it for the world.

“I have really enjoyed the past

17 years. There have been a lot of challenges, particularly when we merged, but I shall miss the team, particularly the management team.

“There are four of them and we work closely together.”

The biggest change since 2000 had been the growth of digital technology.

The previous mound of paper files delivered once a month from central office had been replaced with updated IT files.

The centres' webchat service, with its telephone helpline, accounted for 35 per cent of the combined 15,000 enquiries handled a year.

“I can see the growth of IT continuing,” she said. “I'm sure the day will come when we meet our clients with an iPad in our hands.”

The number of nationalities had also increased this century to make Brexit a big uncertainty and which Mrs Groves feared would make the area poorer.

She also believed the launch by the Government of universal credit in the area, though delayed by three months to next July, could still cause severe problems to claimants.

This had been shown to be the case elsewhere in the country after the changes had taken place.

MP handed housing dossier A DOSSIER of facts to show more housing in North Bersted would be a bad deal is to be given to the Government.

Members of the Bersted and Aldwick Developments Destroying Environment and Agricultural Land group presented the information to MP Nick Gibb.

Secretary Lynda Skinner said: “We are not anti-housing but we believe the numbers are too high. We all have children and grandchildren who need homes.

"But we believe they should be the right houses in the right places. We don’t believe this is the right place. We believe housing should be sustainable and we don’t believe that is the case here.”

Mr Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: “Everyone accepts we need more houses because young people are struggling to get on the housing ladder. The question for Arun is how they find the land for these houses in a way that is suitable and finds support from local residents.

“You win and lose these debates on technical issues. You have done an exemplary job in collating the information you have here and I am happy to pass it on to the housing minister, Alok Sharma, and to Arun.”

Arun has earmarked farmland north of Chalcraft Lane for 2,500 homes to be built by 2031. A further 1,200 are likely for Pagham.

A total of 14 residents were present at the 90 minutes-long meeting at Bersted Jubilee Hall. Mrs Skinner presented the facts put together by BAD DEAL on five topics – destroying some of the best farmland in England, transport, infrastructure and services, environment and housing numbers.

About the agricultural land, Mrs Skinner

said: “The Government has put brownfield sites over greenfield sites. At present, that does not seem to be the case here."

Bersted parish councillor Gill Yeates said: “There is no real protection for this good quality farmland. There needs to be more protection for agricultural land.

“It’s not local people getting the houses or the jobs, it seems. The jobs at the (recently approved) Salt Box development are not really the sort of jobs that will

enable people to afford these houses.

The roads around Bersted would be unable to cope with more homes, said Mrs Skinner.

Mr Mike Skinner said those in neighbouring Pagham were also under pressure. “The Royal Oak junction is so bad that people become frustrated and take chances, particularly in the morning peak time and probably in the evening as well.

and from work and the traffic can’t get past them and that causes a series of moving traffic jams.

"The roads are too narrow today. Let alone when more cars are on them.”

Mr Martin Lury, a Bersted parish councillor, said: “Common sense clearly states we are going to have a problem and the numbers involved do not stack up."

Strong points were also made by the residents about the other subjects.

` New toilet plans AMENDED plans have been revealed for seafront toilets in Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council has submitted the proposals for the conveniences and foreshore office after strong protests from residents to the original scheme.

The 70-plus objections – many around the fact the toilets faced flats on the opposite side of the seafront – led councillors to defer a decision.

Those alterations have been included in the latest designs by the council’s architects, Space & Place, for the site opposite Walton Avenue.

The main one is switching the doors from the north side of the building – opposite the flats – to the south. A report with the planning application states the changing of the doors would overcome the public protests even though no planning reason existed for it.

“The toilets and beach office buildings are replacing a larger and taller building with a pitched roof (foreshore office) that is out of scale for the narrow promenade, so actually will improve the sea views.

“The footprint area of the two buildings is less than the existing foreshore office and they are not as tall.

“The combined buildings are slightly longer east to west than the existing building but there is plenty of room in this axis.

“The size and shape of the buildings was restricted to suit the long thin nature of the promenade and the scale and mass of the buildings was reduced to improve the all-important sea views.”

Tributes paid to Dougal TRIBUTES have been paid to a committed Bognor Regis councillor.

Cllr Dougal Maconachie passed away last Thursday morning after a long-term illness.

He was first elected in the mid-1990s and had worked tirelessly for the people he represented in the town's Marine ward and for the wider community in the Arun district.

Glenna Frost, town clerk of Bognor Regis Town Council, said: "Dougal will be missed by so many, and on behalf of the town council, I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends."

Cllr Maconachie first served as a town council member between 1995 and 1999 as a Conservative representative for Marine ward.

After a sabbatical, he returned to local government and became an Arun district councillor. He served as the district council's chairman in 2014-15 and was last re-elected in May, 2015.

Those elections also saw him chosen again as a Conservative councillor for Marine ward on the town council.

He was a serving member of the policy and resources committee and had previously served on the environment and leisure, events, promotion and publicity and mayoralty selection committees.

A town council spokeswoman said: "Dougal was a man of strong principles and beliefs who bought determination to matters with which he was involved."

His fellow town councillors remembered him fondly as being passionate about council matters but never a person to bear a grudge if a vote went against him, she said. "Cllr Maconachie always put the people he represented at the heart of it, barely missing a council meeting whilst undergoing treatment for a long-term illness.

"Dougal lost his beloved wife, Jacqui, only four months ago and yet his commitment to the town never wavered as was evident by his attendance at a policy and resources committee meeting just over a fortnight ago," the spokeswoman added.

Arun has also expressed its condolences to Cllr Maconachie's family and friends.

College gets festive spirit

` Centre's new use FLATS and shops will replace a former Bognor Regis youth centre.

The empty Number 18 Project building in Waterloo Square has been given the new uses after they were approved by Arun District Council. The centre has had a range of planning permissions, from a church to an amusement arcade, before the approval for the youth centre was granted in 1992. That closed several months ago and the council-owned premises, on the corner with High Street, have since been empty.

Council planning officer Daniel Vick said Arun planned to change the ground-floor into a shop with one two-bed flat on the first floor and another on the second floor.

“This is considered to be an acceptable scheme that will make more efficient use of an existing site providing new homes to help meet local needs whilst retaining a retail use on the ground floor," he said.

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said: “I welcome the fact this particular building is going to come back to some sort of use. It has been empty for a number of months."

` New year's dip A CHANCE to start 2018 in the sea off Bognor Regis is being offered by the town's swimming club.

It is holding a new year's dip at 11am on January 1 in front of Bognor Regis Yacht Club in Victoria Road South.

Dippers must be aged over 16 and are encouraged to dress as pantomime characters and raise money for charities and the swimming club.

Panto fun mixes usual characters THERE'S nothing like a dame as Dick Whittington found out when he shared top billing with Cinderella and Snow White in a college's panto.

The characters ended up appearing in each other's shows for the latest seasonal offering from Felpham Community College.

The panto was a sell-out show with a cast of 40 students from Years 7-9 delighting the audience.

Year 9 student Dylan Drew said: "Last year, I was involved with the lighting at the panto and, as I enjoy acting, I auditioned for a part and was the Dame.

"I was excited and nervous about the performance. It was really nice to have my dad, nan, grandads and uncle all come to watch.

"When I leave school, I haven't decided yet whether to be an actor or a chef."

The story started with the traditional

tale of Dick Whittington. However, his script became muddled when his granny drops it and the story soon encompassed a wide range of other fairy tales and characters.

Yasmin Tetra, a drama teacher, said: "We wanted to ensure there were a number of lead parts. The students and I wanted to create a mishmash of the traditional panto stories so that we could include the lead parts from all of them.

"I'm not sure many pantomimes around here feature a Dick Whittington, Cinderella and a Snow White.

"All the students worked really hard fot the performance, with after-school and weekend rehearsals and learning lines at home.

"All the effort paid off as the evening was a great success enjoyed by all."

The cast also performed to a care home in the area just before the end of term.

A MAGICAL festive evening was created at Felpham Community College's annual carol service.

The event again proved popular as parents, students, staff and residents in the area filled nearby St Mary's Church.

Audience participation was encouraged, which created a brilliant atmosphere. The college's choir was accompanied by its wind ensemble.

A serving of mince pies and mulled wine at the end ensured the evening was a community event enjoyed by all.

Mark Anstiss, the college's headteacher, said: "The students and staff always put a

huge amount of effort into this traditional festive celebration.

"The concert is a lovely way to end a busy term and showcases the range of musical talent we have at the college, as well as the student and staff choir."

The concert closed with a collection for Aldingbourne Trust, Sussex Snowdrop Trust and St Mary's Church.

The college also supported two charities in the area with its annual non-school uniform day on the last day of term. The latest raised money for Stonepillow to help homeless people in Bognor Regis and Chichester and Bognor Regis Foodbank.

Littering fine trial extended FINES for littering and dog fouling around Bognor Regis are being handed out every 50 minutes.

The latest figures from Arun District Council show its enforcement trial has seen more than 1,200 fixed penalty notices issued. These have been imposed during the some 120 man days of patrols by the two-five officers which council has hired for the experiment.

Its success led councillors to agree to extend the trial for two more years from next May 15 and to increase the ‘fines’.

The cost of throwing a cigarette butt on the ground or failing to clear up dog excrement could rise from the current £80 to £100, or whatever level is needed, to sustain the service.

The decisions by Arun’s environment and leisure working group will go to its cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, for a final decision early next year.

Working group chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said: “I really welcome this report. In my opinion, the trial is working.

“People’s actions change once we have dog wardens walking around. I’m 100 per cent in favour of this.”

Cllr Dr James Walsh (LD, Beach) said: “We are doing the right thing. Please take this forward and make sure we enforce it.”

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said litter was one of the biggest complaints raised by residents in his ward.

“People ring up about it all the time. I don’t see anything wrong with putting more money into extra officers.

“Let’s have more enforcement and really nail this problem down.”

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) called for the patrols to wear more easily seen clothing.

“I feel there should be a more high visibility presence in terms of what they wear. They can melt away in dark clothing when they stand in doorways.

“But cigarette butts are a problem and I welcome this approach. It does seem to be having an impact.”

Council licensing manager Sarah Meeten said talks had begun with East Hampshire District Council, which supplied the enforcement officers, to make them more identifiable.

“They will have identification on their uniforms more clearly in future.

“The vast majority of offenders are local people. The busiest part of the district for officers is Bognor Regis. Figures have shown a significant peak in tickets issued in the town centre area.”

Nine out of ten were for littering, rather than dog fouling, because this tended to occur at the start and end of the day. But patrols had taken place at 6am to tackle the problem.

The project is free for Arun. The expenses are paid by the fines imposed. A total of 63 fines have been unpaid and the cases are set to go to court early next year.

Councillors also agreed to expand the contract to enable the enforcement officers to enforce all dog controls and confiscate alcohol where needed in the public space protection order area which covers most of Bognor Regis.

Dancers can request their own music from the DJ's extensive library to make the night extra special. The fun will last from 8pm until 12.30am at the hall in Pagham Road and doors will open at 7.30pm.

The event has been organised by the Pagham on Parade committee for the hall's trustees. Committee member Ray Radmall said: "It should be a brilliant evening."

Firm helps centre RETURNING tourists helped to pay for some Christmas cheer at a Bognor Regis centre.

The holidaymakers put their loose change in various currencies after their holidays overseas in a collection box at the town's branch of Hays Travel.

The coins totalled £150 and the donation was handed over to the Laburnum Centre just before Christmas.

This was the first year the travel agent had collected the money after it opened in the London Road precinct.

First year apprentice Taylor Salmon and Joy Coit, assistant manger,

presented the money to the head of community activities, Gary Hardley, at the Age UK West Sussex-run centre.

Taylor said: "Over the past year, we have been collecting money for this amazing place run by Age UK. "We also wanted to make people aware of this centre. There's everything under one roof - like beauty therapy and a gym - and it's a social place. Everyone is smiling."

Gary said: "We are pleased with the donation and really grateful for it.

"We put it towards the Christmas dinner for our members. It's nice to get support from a local business."

A FLAME made the journey from Bethlehem to Bognor Regis for Christmas.

The light was put on display in St George's Chapel in the town's war memorial hospital. The hospital's chaplain, the Rev Graham Reeves, blessed the flame in the 4pm Holy Communion service last Thursday.

It originated from the eternal flame in the nativity grotto in Bethlehem, which celebrates the birth of Jesus. This is distributed around the world each year.

Sean's smart move for his pram win RECORD-BREAKING stalwart Sean Wickenden celebrated his latest Pagham Pram Race by winning the prize named after a late friend.

Mr Wickenden completed his 46th entry by clinching the Dennis Doughty Memorial Shield with a giant Smarties tube on his adapted pram.

He entered with his grand-daughter, Paige Wickenden, 18, as his sixth partner in his unequalled participation in the Boxing Day fun.

Rose Green resident Mr Wickenden, 63, said: “I enjoy taking part in the race.

It's a tradition but I have to say I found it harder this year.

“Those few extra yards we have to take for the pit stop at the Beach Cafe, instead of the King's Beach Hotel, made all the difference for me. But it's good to have been awarded the memorial plate again.

My name is on it a few times.

“I used to enter the race with Dennis, who died in a bike accident, and winning the memorial plate brings back some memories.

“I can remember some of the things we used to get up to – laughing and joking as we built our entries. We would start off building one thing and end up with something completely different.”

"It's good to see the race keeps going.

It's a really brilliant event and people have made a lot of effort. Congratulations to all those who have won,” he said.

This year's race attracted a lower than usual 42 entries but many were larger teams of up to ten members to take the participants to 160.

The race began in 1946 when two friends had a drunken bet in The Lamb about who could push a pram quicker around the village. They set up the route from Nyetimber Mill past The Bear, The Lamb and the former King's Beach Hotel – with a pint of beer at each - before they finished back at The Lamb.

It has stayed unchanged except for the diversion outside the one-time hotel, recently changed to a convenience store, to the cafe opposite.

As usual, those taking part were watched by thousands of spectators

and divided into serious and humorous entrants.

First to cross the finishing line for the first time were Ben Archer and Rikki Mace. It was their second entry together and ninth overall. Rikki had come second and third and Ben's brother was a previous winner.

Ben, 27, of Aldwick, said: “I went flat out. It's good to win but I'm absolutely exhausted. I've used up all my pigs in blankets from yesterday.”

North Bersted resident Rikki, 29, said: “Every Boxing Day, we see the same faces and everyone's got a smile on their face. We'll be back next year.”

They completed the race in about 15 minutes and a few paces ahead of cricketers, The Gashers, aka Kieron Lafferty, George Hibberd and Morgan Powell-Jones.

The first ladies home were the Festive entry led by regular entrant Lucy Archer.

Second place went to Orange Is The New Black and, in third, were Trumpy Stuff, or sisters Elissa and Jo Batty.

Both living in London, they followed the footsteps of their parents who entered some 30 years ago.

Elissa, 20, depicted North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Jo, 25, was USA President Donald Trump.

Jo said: “This is the first year we have entered. It's quite tough to push so much extra weight around but we will be back next year.

Elissa added: “The crowds were really good. A lot of people were laughing at us.”

The humorous entries were headed by the first-time winning trio of Pagham's Old Biddies. Father and son Greg Hausmann, 53, and Benjamin Hausmann, 25 on Christmas Day, joined with friend Chris Fry, 26, to clean out the charity shops in Bognor Regis of pearls and twinsets to live up to their nickname of Pagham's Old Biddies. Greg proudly boasted: “We've been holding up Pagham Road since time began.”

Benjamin said: “Young people nowadays really are so fast and reckless.

Even in this race, they took no notice of the Slow Down sign on Pagham Road.”

Other fancy dress entries included Pagham's Potholes Patrol with Detour hi-vis outfits, threatened green field and beach front floats, led by Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall, an anti-house building minidigger, the human emojis of Rose Green Junior School, Father Christmas and his reindeer and the congregation's mobile St Thomas a'Becket Church.

Pram race committee chairman Mick Warren said: “This has been another excellent day with a good turnout.

Members of the community continue to support us and they have again put in a lot of effort, with the size of the teams growing.

“We allocated £12,000 to local organisations last year and we are hoping to exceed that this year, thanks to the pram race and our four other fundraising events each year. But we couldn't do any of it without our volunteers. We had probably our best turnout this year of more than 40.”

Five star show sets Pagham up for promotion push in new year

Chi left fourth after defeat CHICHESTER City coach Danny Potter believes his side must move on after being hit for five in a Boxing Day clash with Pagham.

The Lillywhites have dropped to fourth in the SCFL Premier after being condemned to their heaviest defeat of the year by their near neighbours in front of a bumper crowd at Oaklands Park.

With just eight points separating the top eight in a very competitive division, Chi's management team will be hoping their side were suffering from a Christmas Day hangover.

Next up is a trip to ninthplaced Lancing tomorrow (3pm) before the crunch FA Vase fourth round match against Combined Counties Premier side Horley Town on January 6.

Speaking after the 5-0 defeat, Chi first team coach Danny Potter said: “The better team won on the day. Pagham worked harder and were quick and strong in attack which hurt us.

"They've got the in-form striker in the league playing well and they have quality players around him.

"We wish them all the best

for the rest of the season. We turn our focus now to Lancing in the league and then the Vase.�

After winning six of their past seven, Chi went into the match against Pagham in high spirits.

But they were brought swiftly down to earth when Lions striker Dan Simmonds scored his 12th league goal of the season after just five minutes.

The former Shoreham player, who only signed for Pagham in October, added a second on the half hour Chi boss Miles Rutherford rang the changes at half time and brought on Kaleem Haitham and Tafadzwa Kanjanda.

Both failed to make much of an impact as Pagham forged the first opportunities in the second 45.

With 20 minutes to go, Simmonds scored his hattrick. Callum Overton and Jack Parkinson then rounded off the scoring for the Lions.

The defeat ends a seven game unbeaten run for Chi that included six consecutive clean sheets.

Pagham leapfrog their neighbours into third spot in the table with Chi fourth, one point behind.

Daniel Simmonds (3), Callum Overton and James Parkinson sealed the victory in front of a bumper crowd at Oaklands Park.

Those three points lifted Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds side above Chi into third in the very competitive division.

With a home match against ninth-placed Loxwood to come tomorrow (3pm), the Lions know that three points will mean they head into 2018 in prime position as they eye-up promotion to the Isthmian League.

Pagham's five star performance against Chichester was a continuation of a fine run of form for the Nyetimber Lane club.

They have lost just once in 15 matches in all competition - which includes scoring 15 goals in the last three matches. Central to that has been the form of their star striker Simmonds, who has bagged eight goals in that time.

Sids' winless December rolls on Ne SIDLESHAM are hunting their first win in four as they make the short trip to second bottom Clymping tomorrow.

Daren Pearce's side sit third in the SCFL Division Two with just over half the season gone.

After an unbeaten start that extended well into the autumn, Sids have hit a wall in recent weeks, losing out to Alfold and Cowfold.

That poor December continued on the Saturday before Christmas as Pearce's side were unable to break down a stubborn Bosham side.

A 0-0 draw was not the worse result for the Sids, as defeats for those sides around them saw them rise up the table.

But if they are to achieve the ultimate aim of promotion from intermediate football come April then Pearce knows his side need to start winning games again.

They could start tomorrow when they play second-bottom Clymping at Littlehampton's St Flora's Sportsfield (2pm).

Their opponents have been much improved in recent weeks, picking up seven points out of the last 12 available.

That included a 7-2 victory over Bosham, a result which should mean that the Sids go into the game knowing three points will not come easy.

Meanwhile, Bosham's hunt for a victory sees them welcome Lancing United to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

The Robins have drawn their last four matches, a run which has ended their hopes of reclaiming the SCFL Division Two title.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's grip on seventh has been strengthened after picking up four points from six in the last week.

The Blues beat Seaford Town 2-0 in front of a home crowd last Saturday, thanks to strikes from Ryan Morey and Morgan Forry.

Then Steve Bailey's side showed true character and were unlucky not to beat thirdplaced Wick when they visited on Boxing Day. Tom Jefkins and Morey put the Blues in front, only for the Littlehampton side to hit back and ensure a share of the spoils.

That means they are now undefeated in five - a run they will put to the test tomorrow when they make the relatively short trip to Midhurst & Easebourne tomorrow (3pm).

The Blues will go into the match full of confidence having already beaten the Stags twice this season - a 4-1 victory on opening day in the Peter Bentley Cup was followed by a 2-1 win at home in the league in late August.

With Midhurst fifth-bottom, they will be scrapping for every point on offer.

QEII crowned trebles divisional champs THE QEII trio of Wayne Wadsworth, Cliff Prior & Richard Ragless cruised to victory in the Divisional Trebles knockouts of the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out league.

A total of 22 teams took part in the contest, which was full of competitive Christmas cheer. After overcoming Micky Rowland, Andy Whiteley & Dave Juniper (The Legends) in the semi, the QEII trio were pitched against Gary Blackwood, Darren Rich & Ben Marley (The Legends) in the final.

After going into a 2-1 lead, the fourth leg saw a 105 in-shot from Ragless, followed by a ton and 123, while Prior also hit a ton.

The Legends trio also hit some good scores, but it was the QEII trio who reached the double first. Ragless took all three darts to hit

double 7 for the leg and the 3-1 win to take the Division 1 Trebles title for QEII, pictured top right. In division two, the final was contested between Rob Palmer, Gary English & Andy Cooper (Cabin Cruisers) and Keith Robinson, Alex Norgett & Lee Hellyer (Chi Snooker Club).

The Cruisers, pictured bottom right, sailed into a 2-1 lead. Then, in leg four, the Chi Snooker team didn't hit a score under 60, with a ton from Norgett, and a ton & 140 from Robinson.

But they missed double top and then double 10 to win the leg, giving Palmer & English, who also hit tons, a chance. With 55 left, English hit the double, to take the game 3-1, and the Division 2 Trebles title.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is calling on his side to find their ruthless streak as the Rocks look to end their tag of the National South's draw specialists.

Fans flocking to watch the Nyewood Lane outfit have been used to the points being shared this term, with ten of Bognor's 23 league matches ending in a stalemate - the most of any side in the division.

Two of those have come in the past week, with the Rocks fighting back to draw 1-1 with fellow relegation strugglers Poole Town last Saturday before a trip to Havant & Waterlooville on Boxing Day ended goalless.

Those two points keep Bognor secondbottom, four points away from safety.

With a return match against near neighbours Havant coming on Monday, Pearce is hoping his side were gifted some scoring boots for Christmas.

He told the Post that it is only by taking their chances that they will be able to lift themselves away from trouble.

Pearce said: "We were far, far better than Poole. On reflection, I am pleased we got a point as we did leave it late. But we should have really put the game to bed after an hour.

"I thought we played really well but we can’t keep on missing one versus one chances. We have missed four in those two games which could be crucial."

The draw at home to Poole was only secured

in the sixth minute of injury time as Doug Tuck steered in a Kristian Campbell cross.

Then, on Boxing Day, the Rocks spurned a number of chances in a hard-fought draw against Havant, who showed why they sit second in the table.

On reflection, Pearce believes no-one could have complained if the Rocks would have taken six points from the two matches.

As it was, Bognor had to settle for two points - which means that with half of the season gone, they have now drawn nearly 40 per cent of their matches so far.

Pearce said: "They are games where I think if we would have won six or seven of those then no-one would have been surprised.

"God knows where that would put us in the league.

"But we can only keep on preparing them to have more possession and create chances than the opposition. That’s a problem we have to deal with.

"It's not all about a change of personnel.

There’s no golden rule that by bringing someone in that will change."

The Rocks will be without left-back Keaton Wood for Monday's match, as the defender suffered a leg injury.

Long-term absentees Ollie Pearce, Corey Heath and James Crane are also unlikely to be available, which means the Rocks' small squad will be stretched.

Hawks will be tough 2018 start AT THIS time of year, getting together with those you know very well is pretty natural.

That extends to the football pitch, too, where the fixtures computer always puts local rivals up against each other, so that fans and players do not have to travel too far. For Bognor, it tends to throw them together with Havant and Waterlooville - a side who may be only 17 miles away in terms of distance, but in some aspects are many moons apart.

For instance, the Hampshire side, nicknamed the Hawks, do not think twice about spending big in a bid to take them back to National League level. It is that financial backing which means they are currently second in National South.

Bognor, meanwhile, are second-bottom despite getting promoted from the Isthmian Premier along with their near neighbours last term. But Rocks boss Jack Pearce says this familiarity, which includes playing them twice in less than seven days, 'doesn't change anything'. He said: "We've got to play them twice a season. We'll prepare as we always do.

"They have the best away record in the league. It will be a tremendous test for us. We will have to be careful about how and when we attack as they are very good at the counter."

‘TIS THE time of year for reflection, relaxation and making lists, not only of things that we want, but also of aims for the next year.

For Rocks’ fans there’s been lots of the first, not much of the second and plenty of material for the third.

With just over half the season gone, it has been an eventful one for Bognor Regis Town Football Club.

The first season back in National South has been far from easy. But, with just over half the season gone, the Rocks still look more than capable of securing survival but also remain in the FA Trophy too.

These cold dark days seem a world away from those heady opening weekends of the season.

After a turbulent off season where the club lost a manager, were denied another and then returned to a third, the first few games would give a real indication of what Bognor could do at step two of nonleague football.

A crowd of more than 700 packed into the Nye Camp back in August for the first match of the year against Bath City. Most returned with big smiles on their faces, thanks to a thunderbolt of a freekick from Ollie Pearce which secured a 3-2 win.

That was followed by a crushing home victory over local rivals Whitehawk, a win which left the Rocks in the top five.

Heady days indeed. But then reality started to bite.

Injuries started to affect the small squad, teams started to work out how the Rocks wanted to play and hopes of adding a few big strong physical players with experience of this level were repeatedly dashed as Bognor struggled to match the budget of others.

All that coincided with a slide down the table as a winless streak of 13 saw the Rocks drop like a stone.

As manager Jack Pearce

keeps on saying: “I’ve not been surprised at the quality of the division but I have been surprised at the physicality of the teams.”

On too many occasions it was that big brute strength which saw Bognor come off second best against a string of sides who know what it takes to compete in the division.

There have been some good additions to the squad.

Ibra Sekajja is a live wire up front, Ben Swallow adds quality out wide while Keaton Wood and Corey Heath are composed additions at the back. There have also been strong showings from some familiar faces - with Chad Field and Dan Lincoln perhaps the standout players so far.

November time saw an improvement in form - with an excellent performance on the road at promotion-chasing St Albans City the highlight as Bognor rediscovered the winning feeling.

There were also good showings such as the FA Trophy wins against Hemel Hempstead and Taunton Town.

The past few weeks have been frustrating, to say the least. The Rocks are not playing like a side which is second bottom.

They control possession.

They control the tempo of matches. The problem is that they just cannot turn that into goals.

So what next for the side?

Well, Pearce and his management team will keep on doing what they are doing off the pitch.

The side will be one of the fittest in the division, they will keep the ball as well as anyone and they will be set up to create a series of chances.

The big if is whether the Rocks can find someone to start converting those opportunities.

Wins are needed and fast.

Start picking up points here and there and the Rocks will suddenly start to enjoy their football again.
