Backing for hundreds of jobs A £40m scheme to bring up to 1,000 jobs to Bognor Regis has been approved.

The Salt Box development north of Rowan Way received unanimous backing from councillors this week.

The commercial estate's first occupier will be the baker, Warburton's, with a distribution depot and offices with 135 jobs.

Work on the site is set to start next year.

It is expected to be 2024 before all the

buildings are complete.

But the decision by Arun District Council's development control committee meant the hopes of Bersted parish councillors of a link road through the estate to connect the two halves of the Bognor Regis northern relief road have been dismissed.

But Paul Hanson, a director of applicant Landlink Estates, said: “This proposal has the potential to bring £40m of capital

investment to create over 30,000sq m of new employment space/ “In turn, that will lead to the creation of more than 500 jobs, may be as many as 1,000.

“We really want Salt Box to be a place where people want to come and visit.

That's why we have created an hotel, a pub, a gym and hot food facilities as part of the site.”

Committee members welcomed the

application.

Cllr Dawn Hall (C, Pagham) said: “This is exactly what Bognor Regis needs. We are always saying we need more local jobs and, with the (housing) developments that are coming along, we need people to have jobs in this area and not to out-commute.”

Festive Fun at Chalcraft Hall

Choir members in bid for chart glory THREE Bognor Regis singers are bidding for music chart success this Christmas.

The singers - Julie Gillson, Jenny Hicklin and Margaret Murphy - are members of The Games Maker Choir.

They appear regularly with it to sing at international sporting events and have joined hundreds of others in recording a single along with Pop Idol winner and presenter Michelle McManus.

Michelle leads an epic UK-wide choir of 1,400 voices from 12 choirs - dubbed Choirs with Purpose - on a modern-day version of Sir Paul McCartney's We All Stand Together.

The single was released on November 24 and is one of an album of cover songs, Stand Together, which is issued today.

Both are in aid of the 11 charities backed by the choirs and which will receive equal proceeds from the sales.

Margaret said: "The feeling of recording this single and album is pretty amazing but surreal at the same time.

"We are small cogs in an incredible large machine led by Jim Hawkins, who brought this idea together and has managed all the recordings by the different choirs at different locations in this marathon project.

"We recorded the Games Maker Choir track, Elbow's One Day Like This, at the National Archives at Kew, which was an amazing venue and yet another incredible experience with the choir."

The Games Maker Choir is raising funds for Access Sport, a charity which

believes every child should have access to the unique power of sport.

The choir were last in the race for Christmas number one in 2012.

Jenny, Julie and Margaret are all committed members of the choir. They travel each month from Bognor Regis to south London for rehearsals with friends from all over the country.

The choir was founded just over the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Jenny and Margaret joined that October and Julie followed soon after.

Victoria Verbi, the choir's founder, said: "Here we go again! We are delighted to be part of this fantastic project raising funds for such great causes."

Sir Paul has given the album his blessing and has waived all royalties on his song. It also features the German Film Orchestra, Babelsberg and violin by the BBC Young Musician 2014, William Dutton.

Michelle McManus said: "This is an incredible project and one with which I am very proud to be involved.

"We are living in a turbulent time, where building communities, hope and solidarity is so important and what better way to do that than through song?

"I'm passionate about choirs, having always sung in them, and hearing the stories from the singers in the Choirs with Purpose is truly humbling."

Witness appeal after crash in Yapton seriously injures men

WITNESSES are being sought after two men were seriously injured in a crash in Yapton.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the collision between a car and a pedestrian to contact them. A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Anyone who saw what happened, or noticed either the car or the pedestrian shortly beforehand, is asked to contact Sussex Police online, sussex.police.uk, or phone 101, quoting Operation Chatton."

The collision happened around 2.15pm on Sunday on the B2233 Yapton Road, near the Oystercatcher pub, some 300 yards south of Yapton Road's

junction with Horsemere Green Lane.

The spokesman said: "A 44-year-old man from Ford, who had been walking along the road with a dog, suffered serious and potentially life-changing injuries.

"A 20-year-old man from Bognor Regis, driving south in a black Volkswagon Polo, sustained serious and potentially life-changing injuries.

"Both men were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and detained for treatment."

Yapton Road was closed between Horsemere Green Lane and the A259 Crookthorn Lane until 8pm.

f Arthur Smith entertains students on stage RESIDENTS and aspiring comedians gathered at the Bognor Youth and Community Centre on Monday to welcome a comedy legend.

Renowned Grumpy Old Man and comedian, Arthur Smith, made a special appearance to help launch the Bognor Institute of Laughter, which has been funded by the People's Health Lottery.

The project has been founded by a group of local people and supported

by Making Theatre Gaining Skills staff to hold practical workshops, master classes and lectures to lead to public performances.

Focusing on providing creative opportunities for people living in deprived areas of Bognor Regis, many with disabilities or mental health issues, the two-year project is set to also help people develop valuable skills in marketing, programming and

producing.

Director of Making Theatre Gaining Skills, Hilary Strong, said: "We were all so delighted that Arthur Smith was able to officially launch the Bognor Institute of Laughter and that we could include performances from pupils of Edward Bryant and Southway primary schools earlier in the day.

"The institute will offer opportunities for all ages to get involved. There will be workshops in performing, drawing cartoons, writing radio comedy and also practical sessions on how to manage a comedy club. We are aiming to do our first ‘gig’ in early May." Arthur Smith was appointed Emeritus Professor of the new institute and performed several jokes before he held a question and answer session.

He said: "I hope this will be a thing that will motivate people to try something

different. Anyone potentially is a comedian and everyone laughs.

"Some people have mental health problems and actually this is an arena where you can actually talk about it. If you go anywhere you will see dozens and dozens of shows where people are talking about various difficulties they have had in life.

"If you just came on and said how great everything is, nobody would be laughing.

Laughter is a kind of consolation in life and a very wonderful one.

"This is perfect for Bognor. It's great.

It's been great fun today, being here and meeting all the people. Hilary is marvellous, she's put on a really good afternoon and it's had a really positive feeling. I feel privileged to have been asked to do it."

Cllr Stephen Haymes (C, Yapton) also welcomed the proposal. “This site has been identified by Arun as employment land for many years,” he said. “The development and the jobs it will create are a welcome boost to the economy and the locality.”

But Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said the new jobs should not divert attention from the fact the development would place further pressure on the roads around the site.

“There is a level of concern locally with the road infrastructure issues that exist in and around the area.

“When the relief road opened, I'm not sure we expected the amount of traffic that would drop down from the A27 to use that road to get to Chichester. There has been an impact on that particular junction which has caused massive problems at Rowan Way, especially exiting some of the stores along there.

“A lot more work needs to be done with the highways authority about future provision in that area of the town to make sure we mitigate any future problems that are going to exist," he said.

Cllr Sue Bence (C, Bersted) also warned about the volume of traffic.

“Rowan Way is extremely busy now.

It is likely to get busier and busier. We want this development but it will add

more traffic,” she said.

The application by Landlink Estates was in two parts over 12 hectares of top grade farmland north of the Rowan Park Caravan Club site and opposite the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars centre with an access off the relief road roundabout on the A29.

The first section sought full planning approval for the Warburton's depot, car parking and access roads from Shripney Road. This is due to be built by 2019.

The second part was an outline proposal for the rest of the site to be built from 2020 to 2024.

This involved an 80-bed hotel, a pub, two drive-thru restaurants, a gym and four further units for offices and light industrial uses and extensions for two of those units.

Bersted Parish Council member Cllr Paul Ralph said the development was welcomed but the extra traffic would cause further problems for the surrounding roads.

“The volume of increased private and commercial traffic from the Salt Box will impact severely on the relief road roundabout and the junction of the A29/Rowan Way and further exacerbate the tailbacks many experience on a daily basis,” he said.

His fellow parish councillor, Gill Yeates, said that, while the new jobs were welcomed, they fell short of the expectations generated when the land was earmarked by Arun for employment use as part of its Enterprise Bognor Regis initiative.

` Cost of Arcade JUST over £1.8m has been spent buying The Arcade in Bognor Regis town centre.

As reported, Arun District Council bought the town council building three months ago.

The cost of the purchase of the High Street structure was reported in public to councillors on Monday.

They also agreed to spend £123,000 to fund expenses like stamp duty and fees linked to the purchase.

Arun's cabinet members decided to take the extra money from the council's asset management budget.

The council has bought The Arcade as a property asset.

But it also hopes its plan to offer flexible and low-cost leases will help to fill the empty units among the total of 22 premises which make up The Arcade and those in the High Street and York Road which are linked to it and reduce the number of vacant premises in the shopping area.

The council expects to start marketing The Arcade in early 2018 to help the town's regeneration.

Sex sessions led to sack for sergeant A POLICE officer based in Bognor Regis has been sacked after it was discovered he was spending parts of his night shifts having sex with two women.

Sergeant Alan Ward, 40, a response officer based at the town's police station, was the subject of a public special case, or fast track, hearing at Sussex Police's headquarters at Lewes on Tuesday.

He faced allegations of breaching standards of professional behaviour in respect of duties and responsibilities and discreditable conduct.

Chief Constable Giles York, who chaired the hearing, considered the allegations that revolved around Sgt Ward, absenting himself while on duty for periods of his night shifts between January 1 and September 30 this year, spending the time at the addresses of two women with whom he was involved in sexual relationships.

The allegations were found and he was dismissed without notice. He had joined the force in 2001.

Assistant Chief Constable Laurence Taylor said after the hearing: "At a time when the demands on the force and his colleagues are considerable, this officer's actions fell woefully short of the expectations of Sussex Police and the public he was meant to serve.

"I am pleased that our confidential

reporting system, through which this was first reported, demonstrated that his colleagues were similarly as disappointed by his behaviour.

"It is important to show that the force will fairly investigate its own staff.

"This highlights our determination not to allow a very small number of officers to damage the confidence held in Sussex Police, nor bring into disrepute the enormous amount of good work carried out day-to-day by thousands of hardworking and enormously dedicated police officers and staff across the county."

It has been reported that Chief Constable York told the hearing Sgt Ward had spent time at the addresses of the two women while on duty for 27 out of 56 night shifts between January 1 and September 30.

On a separate occasion, October 6, officers from Sussex Police's professional standards department discovered Sgt Ward at an address in Bognor Regis between 9.25pm and 11pm while he was on duty.

Chief Constable York found both allegations against Sgt Ward after a 30 minute adjournment and dismissed him with immediate effect.

Sgt Ward had previously admitted the allegations against him.

N-ice treat for Diana for her first time on a rink aged 86 PROFESSIONAL ice hockey player Jussi Lynch Grut took his nan on to Bognor Regis ice rink.

Jussi took a break from playing in goal for the Haringey Huskies to push Diana Lynch, 86, around the ice in her wheelchair.

Diana is a long-term resident of Bognor Regis and was delighted to be given the chance to enjoy the town's popular seasonal attraction.

Jussi's mum, Iris Lynch, said: "After a cautious start while he tested the ice and mobility of the wheelchair, he was soon whizzing her around much to her delight.

"Diana had never skated before and she was over the moon to finally make it

on to the ice at her age.

"We would like to thank Kara and James who run the rink.

"They were so kind to mum and made the trip and afternoon for mum to remember."

Jussi usually plays at the Alexandra Palace ice rink and his team is a member of the National Ice Hockey League's Division Two. They were sixth out of 14 teams last weekend and head to the south coast to Gosport in March to play the Solent Devils.

Ice Skating on the Prom is open on the Place St Maur from 10am-9pm daily, except for Christmas Day, until Sunday, January 7.

Appeal launched for all day opening of homeless hostel

CHRISTMAS came early in Bognor Regis for a charity which helps homeless people.

Staff at the town’s Nationwide Building Society branch invited Stonepillow to use their Christmas jumper day to launch their public fundraising for a new hostel.

This enabled hostel manager Karen Shelley and PR and events manager Laura Bulbeck to collect money and explain the plans for the hostel to customers.

Generous members of the building society popped in donations as they passed in and out of the High Street premises last Friday.

Laura said every penny counted towards the £98,000 that Stonepillow wanted to raise to pay for the hostel to be open around the clock.

Emergency severe weather accommodation can be found for only five more homeless people on camp beds before an overflow site is opened in the neighbouring Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church hall.

Homelessness on the south coast has increased by 30 per cent in the past year to increase the need for the service. The two most common causes are eviction from rented premises and family breakdowns.

The new hostel has been bought by Stonepillow with its reserves and a six-figure grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.

Work has begun on the empty premises in Ellasdale Road previously used for a drugs rehabilitation service.

Karen said: “The new hostel will have 14 bedrooms and will be fully accessible so we can support as many people as possible. The extra space and the daytime opening, if we can achieve it, will enable us to offer outside agencies who work with us the chance to come in.

“Having that space will also enable us to use Glenlogie fully for the severe weather occasions.”

Nationwide branch manager Matt Stanley said: “We believe everybody should have a place fit to call their home.

“With Stonepillow, it’s a local charity and people can see the result of their support for them. It’s important for us, as a business in the town, to support them.”

POLICE are still searching for missing woman, Helen Slaughter from Barnham.

Concern is still growing for Helen, 48, who has been missing from her home since 6am on Wednesday November 1.

Helen is 5ft 2in, of small build, with brown short hair and she normally wears glasses.

She was last seen wearing dark jeans, a light-coloured fleece and a woolly hat.

Helen also has a bee tattoo on her right arm and a letter H tattoo on her top left arm.

Inspector Roy Hodder said: "Officers have been working to trace her but she has not been found.

"Extensive enquiries and searches have been carried out and we have been keeping her family updated throughout.

"We are still appealing to anyone who might have seen Helen or know of her whereabouts to please contact us."

Pond helpers thanked DEVOTED volunteers Terry Reeve and Phil Sargent have been recognised for their efforts at an Aldwick beauty spot.

They were named as the recipients of the 2017 Community Award presented by Aldwick Parish Council. The recognition was a result of their hard work on behalf of the Aldwick Preservation Society to ensure Aldwick Duck Pond remains an attractive location for residents with and without webbed feet.

Mr Sargent, 65, of Aldwick, said: It's nice to be recognised. I've been helping out here for about five years after I saw a sign on the noticeboard asking for help.

"I'm proud of this area. There is always someone down here walking around."

A former motor trade employee, his role is to make and repair the wooden items around the Aldwick Road pond. These include duck huts, a floating island, nesting boxes and ramps.

"I come down here when I need to. When we were building the island, we were here every day for

three months. We shifted six tons of rubble and ten tons of soil.

"The next project is to build a picnic table and I'll do that in the spring."

West Meads resident Terry, 69, helps at the duck pond every day. He walks his dog around it and sees what work needs doing. He also litter picks daily and became involved with the society on a wood carving course run by its chairman, Paul Bignell.

"He knew I bring my dog here every day and he asked if I would be interested in doing a bit of gardening. I cut the grass and look after everything in the surrounding area of the pond, such as painting the seats and repairing them.

"I enjoy doing it and it's about keeping the area nice and safe so people can come down and enjoy it," he said.

Mr Bignell collected the awards on their behalf at the parish council's community reception.

He said: "It's because of the hard work of Terry and Phil that the pond looks so nice and we can keep on top of its condition."

Waste service will continue WEEKLY refuse collections are guaranteed for Bognor Regis area households for at least five more years.

Councillors have agreed to extend the current contract with Biffa to carry out the regular kerbside collections until 2023.

The decision was made by Arun District Council’s cabinet of Conservative members on Monday. Cllr Trevor Bence (Aldwick E), cabinet member for residential services, said: “For me, this is a no-brainer.

“For the residents of Arun, I can’t think of any better news this side of Christmas. For a refuse collection to be weekly is almost unique now among local authorities.

“This is a great position to be in and I look forward to another three years of good service.”

Cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes (Yapton), said: “This is perfect. It has my full support.”

Cllr Dudley Wensley (Angmering), the council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for policy, said: “In this day and age, to have a contract which is performing as well as this, and which has such an immense amount of customer satisfaction in our surveys, is very good.

“It is gives us cost certainty for this three-year extension which is also good.

Our officers should be congratulated and, indeed, the contractor as well.”

The existing three-year combined cleansing services contract which Arun has with Biffa is due to end on February 1, 2020. But the cabinet’s decision means this will carry on for another three years.

As well as the kerbside refuse collections,

the contract covers the fortnightly recycling collection service and the twoweekly garden waste collection service for the 18,300 subscriber households.

Biffa employs 133 staff and uses 48 vehicles for the contract to collect refuse weekly from 72,500 households.

Joe Russell-Wells, the council’s group head of neighbourhood services, told the cabinet: “The current contract which commenced in February, 2017, delivered significant savings for the council in comparision with the previous contract.

“The contractual costs will remain the same for the three-year extension which amount to a continued annual saving of approximately £400,000.”

In addition, the savings had also enabled a waste reduction officer to be taken on to minimise waste and litter and funded the running costs of the clinical waste contract.

The cabinet members decided these benefits outweighed the risks, outlined in a report to them, of staying with the current agreement.

Aldwick resident Joan Stevens, 82, is one of those who enjoys the weekly chats and cups of coffee and cakes.

She said: "I enjoy the talking, the company and the variety of things we do here. If we have a problem, we exchange ideas and opinions about how it can be solved.

"We also talk about where we have been, what's on the news and we have had quite a few lively chats about Brexit,

with people expressing both sets of views."

Another resident who attends every week is Aldwick man Fred Nowlson, 87.

He said: "I have a chat with people and break the ice with them. It's very good."

The free events are held by the Willowhale Farm Residents' Association.

One of its founders, John Bass, said between 20-30 people turned up every week. Their ages ranged from their 20s to their 90s.

"We've been holding these call-ins since 2008 and everyone is welcome.

We want to bring things back to the community. It's about giving people the chance to get out and meet others."

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb also went along last Friday.

The last pre-Christmas session is taking place today before a three-week break.

They will resume until Good Friday and there will be a three-week break later next year.

` Carol service for town's Foodbank CAROLS will be sung tonight for Bognor Regis Foodbank.

The festive service is being held at 7.30pm in St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street.

The Rev Tim Crook, the church's vicar, said: "It will be a chance to sing-a-long to some favourite carols, inspirational festive music and readings.

"It will be an opportunity to learn more about how the Foodbank is helping to stop UK poverty and to raise awareness and funds for this much-loved, local charity.

"One Voice Community Choir will be making a guest appearance, along with South Bersted Church's own choir."

Felpham's lights shine out CHRISTMAS lights are sparkling again in Felpham - thanks to a communitywide effort.

Felpham Village Conservation Society organised and hosted the switch-on of the illuminations last Friday afternoon.

Glenn Powell, its vice-chairman, said: "This is just a lovely, wonderful community event.

"This year we have all three schools in the parish, as well as St Mary's Church choir, singing for the first time.

"So, the event is growing. That can be seen by the number of people here.

"There must be 500 watching, which makes it the biggest we have held.

"It's bringing some Christmas cheer and it's all about being a part of Felpham.

"The conservation society have been holding this event for years, though not this particular version. We love Felpham but we can only put on events like this with the help of a lot of people."

The lights were switched on by a pupil of both Downview and Bishop Tufnell Junior School.

The tree was donated by Butlin's, the vicar of St Mary's Church, the Rev John Challis, blessed it and the lights were installed by a volunteer.

Help was also received by the society to allow Felpham Road to be closed around the tree.

"I love Felpham," added Mr Powell, "and the society is growing in strength.

We have just over 300 members."

THANKS have been given by Felpham Village Conservation Society for the £193.40 donated at its Christmas lights switch-on.

John Fenton-Jones, of Limmer Lane, the society's treasurer, was granted a street collection permit

by Arun District Council for the event last Friday.

Donations were given by those present for the event at Grassmere Parade and no expenses were incurred by the society in connection with the collection.

"Thanks to all those who gave generously at this Felpham event," said Mr Fenton-Jones.

NEARLY 100 children formed the biggest school choir to perform at the switch-on of Felpham's Christmas lights.

The bumper turnout from Downview Primary School delighted the large crowd which had gathered to enjoy the festive occasion.

The 91 young singers performed a faultless rendition of carols and pop songs just before the lights around the Christmas tree were brought to life.

Among their tunes was the medley from this year's John Lewis TV ad.

School music co-ordinator Kate Trodd, who is also a Year Six teacher, said: "The children meet once a week at Friday lunchtimes to rehearse. They learnt the songs from the advert in just two weeks.

"This is the children's first performance

in the build-up to Christmas and it's nice for them to be here as part of the community. It's also unusual for them to sing outside."

Two other school choirs took part in the earlier part of the 90-minute celebration at the Grassmere Parade.

They were Felpham Community College and the combined Bishop Tufnell CoE primary and infant schools.

One of the Bishop Tufnell primary pupils was Zac Parker, 11. He said: "This was my second time performing here. I enjoy it because everyone in the choir joins in. The good thing about singing is that everybody is listening and you know you have their attention. I feel good about myself afterwards and I enjoy hearing the applause."

Pupils' special history lesson sees them write about their school's past SCHOOL children continued the 90th anniversary celebrations at St Mary’s with a special assembly and tea party.

Parents, teachers and pupils of past and present were invited to the occasion to mark the anniversary.

The assembly consisted of the school's 11 classes focusing on a significant moment from history including the BBC's launch, the start and end of World War Two, the Berlin Wall falling and the London Olympic Games.

Headteacher Peter Edgington said: “I am privileged to be the latest in a long line of headteachers who have had the honour of steering St Mary’s through the years. A parent spoke to me in the playground recently and said: ‘St Mary’s is like a stick of rock with Jesus running through every piece.’

"The children looked at the log books going right back to 1926. They learnt the history of the school, for example who was evacuated in the war, and that 50 children arrived and had to be accounted for in classes. They also learnt about how some of the children’s parents came here and what the school used to be like here."

Susan Guppy, from Bognor Regis, attended St Mary’s in 1960. She said: “My husband, Paul, and I both came to this school, as did my father-in-law, son and grandchildren. I thought the assembly was really good, it was interesting."

Her son, Russel Guppy, said: “I met lots of good friends here. Mrs Paula Lockwood and I met in reception in 1984

and have been friends since, with both of us being godparents to each other's children. When we were at school, Paula worked out that if she were to become a teacher, she would be able to take Mrs Jones’ place when she retired, and she actually did!

"There is a real sense of community and continuity in the school with myself seeing old school friends both in front and behind me on the journey of educating our children. With a long history and involvement in the school it can often be nearly impossible to walk through town without seeing someone you know who is connected to the school.”

School governor Diana Orde visited for the assembly and stayed for the tea party. She took some of her own photos with her which were of her late husband, David, who was a deputy head at the school from 1974 to 1986. The couple moved from the Costwolds when Mr Orde got the position and they remained in Bognor Regis.

She said: “I have lots of happy memories from this school. The assembly the children put on was absolutely delightful, it was a real celebration.”

Nine-year old Marcus Alvarez Wisby focused in the assembly on the moon landing. He said: “I have learnt so much and now I know loads about the history of the school.

"My favourite bit was learning about the Pope coming to England. My mum and three aunties all came here and if

I stay in Bognor Regis, I will send my children here.”

Children at the school were given the task to learn more about writing articles for newspapers and focused on the school’s anniversary.

After learning first hand experience from a Post Newspaper reporter on how a newspaper works and how to start writing an article, the children were guided through the work with teachers' support.

As part of the work, the pupils asked visitors to the assembly and tea party questions about who they were and what the school meant to them and then wrote up their articles.

The winning children were: Jessica Simons - Craigweil class, Year 4; Jack Lockwood - Marine Class, Year 4; Lily Geall - Blake class, Year 3; Julia Mielcarz - Blake class, Year 3; and Adrian Ochmanek - Marine class, Year 3.

Jessica Simons, aged nine, said: "I was surprised and amazed to be picked. I worked very hard."

Jack Lockwood, aged eight, said: "I wanted to make the school be more known. We enjoyed collecting quotations from staff like my mum and grandma who both went to the school."

Mr Edgington said: "The writing showed great maturity and I wouldn't be surprised if any of the children decided to become journalists."

` Fire safety backed NEW RULES to ensure communal areas are kept clear in council flats around Bognor Regis have been backed.

Cabinet members of Arun District Council supported the move by its housing and customer services working group.

The new policy informs tenants they have to ensure the areas are free from any clutter to enable a speedy exit in case of an emergency.

Residents who refuse to obey face the ultimate sanction of having their property taken away.

The policy has been compiled in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fatal fire in West London six months ago.

It will be brought in a phased approach and applies to personal items like buggies.

` Santa's on tour FATHER Christmas continues to be joined by his friends in Bognor Regis Hotham Rotary Club for his latest visits on his annual tour around the town.

Tonight will see him travel in his illuminated sleigh to Blakes Mead in Felpham, from 5.45pm to 8pm, before he goes to North Bersted from 4.30pm to 7.30pm tomorrow.

Next Monday will see him move to the B&Q and M&S stores in Shripney Road during the daytime.

Santa will have a rest on Tuesday but is back in action from 5.45pm8pm next Wednesday at Bersted Park and during the daytime next Thursday at the Tesco store in Shripney Road.

Milestone for the university FORMULA ONE dreams have moved closer with a milestone moment at the Bognor Regis campus of the University of Chichester.

The traditional topping out ceremony marked the completion of the highest point of the campus's £35m engineering and digital technology park.

The ceremony - performed by the vicechancellor, Professor Jane Longmore, was attended by engineering student Louise Grainger.

The 19-year-old attends the university's integrated foundation course launched this year to make maths, technology, engineering and science degrees more accessible. She will progress on to one of the technology park's undergraduate degrees when it opens next autumn and said: "I'm so excited I will take my first steps into engineering in such an incredible place.

"I've always dreamt of one day working for a motor sports or F1 team and now I feel that I can achieve that ambition.

"The park will give me the opportunities that I've never had before and I can't wait to start learning in its laboratories and workshops."

The university development will introduce a department of engineering and applied design, providing a machinery workshop with welding floor, fabricating laboratory, specialist 3D printers and an engineering centre.

This will be built alongside a department of creative and digital technologies with a 300sq m television production studio, an auxiliary 100sq m special effects room and a 400sq m media operation centre.

As reported, work on the site alongside Upper Bognor Road started last summer.

She poured oil and wine and scattered corn and salt over the highest point of the building before she completed the last section of concrete with a hand trowel.

The historic moment was watched by members of the university's board of governors, senior executives of the construction company, Galliford Try, and other builders.

Prof Longmore said the park would help to regenerate the coastal region, provide educational chances for a broad range of students and jobs in sectors seen as a priority by the government.

"By combining engineering and design with creative and digital technologies in one state-of-the-art development, we will equip graduates with the enterprise skills, creativity and technical knowledge to enter the workforce," she said.

"The technology park will help us deliver our vision of making the region a place where businesses, large and small, can thrive, create jobs, and where people can access the very best education and training opportunities."

The park has been supported and part-funded with an £8m grant from the Government's growth fund through the Coast to Capital local enterprise partnership, which works to encourage economic growth across the region.

Its chief executive, Jonathan Sharrock, said: "The technological sector in the coast to capital region is one of the most advanced in the country and addressing the skills deficit is vital to its continued success."

The development has been backed by more than 40 industry organisations.

They include Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Sony and Bognor Regis firm URT.

School's week for diversity STAFF wore fancy dress as a Bognor Regis school celebrated diversity.

A special week at The Regis School focused on the differences within our society with a range of activities.

They ended with its teachers dressing up in an imaginative array of costumes to help promote the message the school had tried to promote.

Diversity in all its forms was celebrated.

Student-created sessions about the subject were held in tutor time each day.

The sessions tackled a range of issues both the students and teachers believed needed to be discussed more frequently.

These included disability, gender equality and identity, Islamophobia and financial difficulty.

Naomi Austin Carr is a sixth former who played a key role in organising the week. "Diversity week came from a single conversation about how sometimes young people may be ignorant to some of the challenges members of the LGBT community may face."

The school, as reported, also used the week to collect food for the town's Foodbank. The final total was 1,678kg.

Another way to promote helping others was the sale of donated pies for ÂŁ1 each to raise money for food waste awareness.

The delicious pies were donated by UK Harvest and the profits were donated to the homeless charity, Stonepillow.

One of the school's food tech teachers, Suzette Watson, said: "We need to realise how lucky we are to have the basic necessity of food, which some children do

not have."

School principal Mike Garlick said: "I am hugely proud of how all members of our school community celebrate the diversity within our school, locally and globally."

Year 8 student Megan Bryant Lawson collected 34kg of food. Her efforts were among those of more than 100 students at the school whose social action pledges were celebrated at a special assembly.

Their work was recognised as part of the national #iwill campaign that encourages young people to help others in their community or the environment.

Megan, 12, said: "#iwill is a great campaign that inspires children to care for the environment and others.

"At The Regis School, we held a celebration for those who achieved their promise. Children were awarded a certificate and badge to show their achievement.

"It was great to listen to what people had achieved and to know that they are making a difference."

The others recognised included Lucy Tew for sponsoring dogs and Mia Mcree for helping Bersted Green Primary School.

Tutor group G9 has sponsored a guide dog from a successful bake sale.

Poppy Mason walked for Dementia UK and Olivia Veenstra raised ÂŁ200 for the British Heart Foundation. #iwill is a UK-wide movement that aims to make meaningful social action part of life for all 10-20-year olds by 2020. The Regis School is one of 750 organisations which are involved.

A NEW start for the new year is available with adult education in Bognor Regis.

The spring/summer Aspire Sussex brochure has hundreds of courses on offer. They range from arts and crafts to fitness, languages, computing, Chinese and pottery.

Those in the Bognor Regis area take place in Westloats Lane, Felpham and Westergate. Others are held in Chichester and Selsey.

Robyn Kohler, Aspire Sussex's chief executive, said: "We want people to experience the joy of learning, while meeting new people and developing new skills and interests."

Courses are also on offer for those who want to gain a qualification or change a career.

ALL OF Arun District Council's offices will close over Christmas.

The sites, such as Bognor Regis Town Hall, will shut at 4pm next Thursday and reopen at 8.45am on January 2.

Contact information for emergencies can be found at the council's website - arun.gov.uk The emergency standby service will only deal with enquiries where there is a risk of injury to persons or damage to property which affects Arun residents, reporting stray dogs or serious and widespread noise nuisance or anti-social behaviour.

Refuse collections will be a day late from December 25 until January 8. Refuse crews will be working on Boxing Day and Saturdays.

Post readers brighten Christmas for homes CHRISTMAS cheer was brought to care home residents thanks to the generous readers of Post Newspapers.

We asked the keen knitters and singers among our readers to make this festive season special for residents of some of the area's care homes.

And you responded in droves. You donated bag after bag of handmade scarves, hats, gloves, bed socks and twiddle mitts.

Your efforts were really appreciated by the residents and staff of the three care homes that took part - Summerley Care Home in Felpham, Chalcraft Hall Care Home in North Bersted and Haviland House in Goring-by-Sea. Last Wednesday was the day when the Post's staff played Santa with your gifts with a series of hour-long visits.

Bryony Treloar, manager of Summerley Care Home, said: “The residents are loving this event. You only have to look at them to see they are smiling and they are all singing happily.

"They are all enjoying it. Events like this brighten their day up. We always have music here anywhere and they love singing, not just at Christmas. We have choirs of children come in from schools.”

The home has 21 residents. They all have dementia. The oldest is 99 years old and their average age is in the mid-80s.

Two of those enjoying themselves at the Christmas celebration were Ursula Maurice and Margaret Rogers.

Ursula, 87, said: “It’s fantastic today – very good. Christmas brings back memories to me and I enjoy hearing the carols.

"I’m joining in the singing when I remember the words and it’s lovely to be

given a present.”

For Margaret, 79, this will be the first Christmas in the home after the death of her husband. "I very much enjoy the carols and the music,” she said. “I love singing and I have been singing away to the carols.”

The music was provided by clarinettist Tony Cardona. He responded to an article in the Post which asked for help from musicians and singers.

He livened the mood with renditions of favourites like Away In A Manger, Silent Night, Hark The Herald Angels Sing and Once in Royal David’s City.

Mr Cardona, a carpenter by trade, said: “I’ve come to bring some Christmas cheer to these residents on the birthday of Jesus. I’ve been practising every day for the past three weeks to get to know these tunes.”

The singing at Haviland House and Chalcraft Hall was provided by the Chichester Children Carollers comprised of pupils from St Richard's Catholic Primary School, Kingsham Primary School and Central CE Academy.

At Haviland House, the response to the event was equally enthusiastic.

Eileen Garbutt said: "What a treat that was for our family members this afternoon.

Our family members' Christmas party is on Saturday and I have a Santa coming who'll give out the rest of the gifts to other family members unable to attend today.

"The gifts we saw today, as no doubt the rest will be, are truly beautiful so please do extend our heartfelt gratitude to the donors. Some family members were quite overwhelmed when they opened theirs.

"It was tremendous that some were more than happy to wear them immediately."

Chalcraft Hall Care Home's manager, Sara Whitworth, said: "It was lovely and the residents really, really enjoyed it. The children made it for them.

"We do a lot of activities here but we don't often have children and that made it really special.

"It was a lovely thing for a local newspaper to do for its community and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone."

` TV characters visit CHILDREN'S TV characters Ben and Holly will be leading a day of free festive family fun in a Bognor Regis store.

The favourites from the show Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom will be appearing tomorrow at B&Q in Shripney Road.

The stars will be meeting and greeting fans on the hour from 10am until 3pm, apart from 1pm.

Alongside the forest duo, a range of activities will also be on offer.

They will include face painting and a winter wildlife workshop where children can learn the importance of supporting British wildlife by making a festive bird feeder.

The face painting will take place all day and the workshops will be from 10ammidday and 1pm-3pm.

All the events will be run on a first come, first served basis.

` Play areas decision A DECISION to remove play equipment from three sites around Bognor Regis has been confirmed.

Arun District Council's cabinet backed the recommendation of its environment and leisure working group that the areas at Roman Fields and Brickfield Close in Bognor Regis and Holly Court in North Bersted should no longer be classed as formal play areas.

They will still remain as open spaces which can be used for playing.

The decision on Monday was taken without any debate. It is part of Arun's strategy to cut costs and to concentrate resources on the bigger and better used play sites.

A further five play sites around Bognor Regis will also be classed as nonpriorities because they are seldom used.

Charity is winner at boxing night THOUSANDS of pounds were raised at the latest charity boxing night held

by Bognor Regis Rotary Club.

The net amount raised by the club was £6,000 after some 300 diners and a further 100 standing spectators watched a night of top-class boxing action.

The large number of spectators at Butlin's ensured a great atmosphere as Sussex and Hampshire boxers took on each other in a series of bouts.

Rotarian Peter Stemp said: "The members of the officiating body of the Amateur Boxing Association said again that this was one of the best dinner shows they attend.

"The show has been completely rejuvenated with the help of David

AN UNUSUAL Christmas tree in Bognor Regis is a load of rubbish.

And its creator, Tracey Graham, couldn't be happy.

Tracey is known as the Rubbish Artist and has created the seasonal symbol from 600 reused green plastic bottles.

Panto performers from Aladdin at the Regis Centre officially switched on the tree's lights last Thursday.

Tracey installed the sculpture outside the centre's entrance in Belmont Street.

It stands about five metres high and will be on show until January.

Council's waste prevention team were present at the switch-on to talk about the tree and give tips about what to recycle at Christmas.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "The tree is such a delight to see. It's a really impressive sight, especially when it's dark and lit up.

"But it does make you think just how many bottles aren't getting the chance to be recycled into something new.

"In West Sussex, residents are recycling 59 per cent of their plastic bottles, which is great, but 41 per cent still end up in

the bin. As long as they are clean, dry and loose, all plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays can be recycled - not just at Christmas, but all through the year."

This the fourth year the striking tree has been on display. It has previously brightened up Crawley and Horsham.

Separately, recycling and waste company Suez has issued statistics which rank the Arun district as 48th out of 73 local authority areas in the south east for its recycling rate. The figure shows 38.9 per cent of the district's household waste was sent for reuse, recycling or compost in the year to last March 31.

A peach of a wine to help you drink well for less Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com MORE jolly japes this week as I ventured into the Chichester Inn to sample the delights of the soulful and mellifluous tones of the Trevor John Band reconnecting us to great songs of the past. As music and wine often combine, taking a short step in time I felt inclined to see what Sainsbury's have to offer.

I began by electing to purchase my goto Italian white wine, namely a Gavi, and for £7 procured a 2016 Gavi Terredavino.

Gavi is produced in the misty hills of Italy's Piemonte region and the Cortese grape produces crisp, floral, peachy and aromatic wines which are best enjoyed young. This Terredavino Gavi sports a floral nose, has a slight spritz and oozes zesty citrus and white peach flavours culminating in a long finish and is one I happily recommend to you.

My next white wine selection was that of another wine I swoop to buy if on offer, so for £7.50 I was able to obtain a 2017 Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc and no sense of disappointment befell me given that it was bursting with crisp gooseberries and would ideally complement oysters or seafood.

The New Zealand climate of long sunny days and cool nights produces an unusual combination of very ripe fruit alongside fresh acidity. This refreshing wine with rich gooseberry, lime and tropical fruit flavours will not disappoint.

My final white wine selection is a 2016 Château de La Pierre Côtes de Grandlieu Muscadet Sur Lie, currently retailing at £7.75. The old vine character of this wine is most evident and the wine's intense minerality produces an alluring texture allied to refreshing fruit flavours of green apple and pear. Balanced acidity, delicacy and a slight spritz make this a great apéritif with any seafood starters and I commend this merveilleux Muscadet to you.

Conversely, in terms of my red wine

selections, I decided to peruse the fine wine section and for an outlay of £12 availed myself of a 2015 Les Courlandes Châteauneuf du Pape and, as the name suggests, comes from the village which acquired its name from the new château built by the Popes as a summer residence in the 14th century in this Southern Rhône location.

The vineyards are famously covered in 'galets' or pudding stones which are large pebbles which absorb the sun's heat by day and release it overnight to aid ripening of the grapes and high alcohol content. This example produced by the Ogier family is of a lighter style, although still 14.5 per cent alcohol content, and has a red cherry scent with a fruity palate alongside spicy and peppery notes

culminating in a very dry finish. This wine is good value for just £12 currently and one well worth a punt!.

I next espied another wine capable of floating my boat, so to speak, in the form of another Rhône appellation - a 2015 Les Challeys Saint - Joseph currently on offer at £14. Originally known as Vin de Mauves and mentioned in Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, the wine from Saint Joseph was a favourite in the French court of Louis X11 who actually owned a vineyard in Clos de Tournoi.

Moreover, St Joseph is a saint and the protector of scorned husbands. This wine from the great 2015 vintage is rich and dry, complex and concentrated with raspberry and cassis flavours to the fore added to herbal and mineral

Knob of butter 1 small red onion 1 garlic clove 1 tbsp chopped fresh sage 40g vacuum-packed cooked chestnuts, roughly chopped 25g fresh breadcrumbs 450g pork fillet (1 large or 2 smaller halves) 3 tbsp olive oil Sage leaves

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan170°C/gas 5.

In a frying pan, heat the butter and 1 tbsp olive oil and gently fry the red onion, finely chopped, for 5 minutes. Add the garlic clove, crushed, the sage and chestnuts, and cook for a few minutes.

2. 02.Add the onion and chestnut mixture to a bowl with the breadcrumbs.

Season and mix well.

Take the pork fillet, make an incision along the

length(s) and stuff with the chestnut mixture. Tie with kitchen string, at intervals, along the length of the pork fillet.

3. 03.Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large ovenproof frying pan, brown the pork on all sides, then transfer to the oven and cook for 15-20 minutes. Rest for 10 minutes.

4. 04.Fry some sage leaves in butter until crisp. Slice the pork and garnish with the crispy sage leaves.

'Snow' joke for your health when the temperature falls WINTER is well and truly here! I was in Bath at the weekend for my birthday celebrations, and as we walked around the stunning Christmas market, the snow started to fall. It was so beautiful and the perfect scene for Christmas. Mulled wine, music, twinkling lights and real snow… what more could anyone want?

As pretty as this may look, sometimes the extreme change in temperature can be quite dangerous for us. It can be detrimental for our health and can cause more damage than just cold and numb hands and feet.

When we talk about causes of heart disease and ways to prevent it, we typically focus on underlying issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. But it’s important to be aware of the seemingly unrelated triggers that can spur a potentially fatal acute cardiovascular crisis, or, in other words, a heart attack.

Cold weather has been known to cause serious issues when it comes to the heart. When you step out into the cold climate physically it causes your arteries to constrict, which can sharply increase your blood pressure. Exertion in cold weather - for instance, shovelling snow - can be a serious threat to the health of your heart.

Apparently, another situation to be in that can leave a person vulnerable to a heart attack is traffic. According to heart attack survivors, patients were more than three times as likely to have been sitting in traffic as drivers, passengers, bike riders, or public transportation people within an hour of suffering a heart attack. So road rage really is an issue and getting stressed about getting stuck in traffic and being late is a serious health problem not to be underestimated!

Also in the wintertime, we are far more likely to get ill with a chest infection, throat infection and/ or flu. Did you know that respiratory infection dramatically increases your risk of having a heart attack? Your risk is 17 times higher in the week following the infection, and remains elevated for an entire month. That’s why you should take it easy after a bacterial or viral infection and not return to hard-core exercise or strenuous routines immediately.

If you want to learn how to prevent heart attack naturally, focus on your diet. Research reveals that eating heart-healthy foods can prevent up to 70 percent of heart disease. It has been said that statins, the most effective single medications for reducing heart disease, apparently cut risk by only 25 to 30 per cent.

Avoiding smoking, getting control of your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, maintaining

regular medical check-ups and exercise regularly, keeping a healthy weight and managing diabetes properly and finding a way to combat your stress can all be essential when looking after your heart.

What happens when you have a heart attack?

A heart attack occurs when some part of the heart muscle isn’t able to get enough blood. This happens for a variety of reasons, but usually it is caused by a blockage in the vessels that bring blood directly to the heart.

The earlier you can recognise that a heart attack is occurring, the better your chance of survival is and the better your chance of minimising any further damage and complications. The faster you recognise a heart attack, the faster you can seek help with the aim of getting blood flow restored to the part of the heart that is being cut off from blood supply before permanent damage is done.

The classic signs are of a heart attack are: Internal chest pressure and/or pain that may radiate to the neck, jaw, arms, and back. Sweating and nausea with or without vomiting. Cold/clammy skin and shortness of breath with or without chest pressure or a burning sensation in the chest. Generalised fatigue and often confusion can occur, and a person may also experience flu-like symptoms, dizziness, and brief loss of consciousness when the heart attack begins. In rare situations, a heart attack can happen without any symptoms whatsoever, which is known as a silent heart attack.

What to do?

1. Call 999 or your local medical emergency number.

2. Chew and swallow an aspirin, unless you are allergic to aspirin or have been told by your doctor never to take aspirin.

3. Begin CPR if the person is unconscious. Even people without CPR training can save the life of an adult whose heart stops.

I would urge everyone, trained or not, to act immediately in such an emergency. The procedure is simple: if you see an adult collapse after having a heart attack, call 999 immediately and then push hard and fast in the middle of the chest continuously, until emergency medical personnel arrive or an external defibrillator can be used.

Personally, I think everyone should be trained in first aid, as you never know when you might need it.

Community News & Views MORE than 140 boxes of smiles were given out in Bognor Regis as a group of teens aimed to harness the power of happiness.

The 16 and 17-year-olds handed out the small parcels as part of their National Citizen Service countrywide programme to help young adults build their confidence, mix with different social groups and take part in community projects.

Each box contained a different treat. People's initial surprise or suspicion was soon replaced with a smile when they realised the purpose of the present.

One of those who took part in the initiative in the London Road precinct was Dilaxiha Rajendran, pictured below with Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, left, and consort Steve Hearn.

She said: "It's been very successful and I think personally, I'm really glad I have done this social action project because I can see how many people need that smile.

"We went into a charity shop to give one to the volunteers and they said they really needed it and it made their day.

"I just hope that it kind of teaches people that you can give out a smile and kindness doesn't cost."

National Citizen Service in Arun and Chichester is delivered by West Sussex County Council and helps young adults to gain jobs and improve their career prospects.

Before taking part in their latest social action project, the group also came together on the Isle of Wight for the adventure and discovery phases of NCS. As well as managing their lunch budgets, self-reflection tasks and profiling the community, the teams also tested their hands at axe throwing, body boarding, climbing, archery and team challenges.

County council cabinet member for children and young people, Cllr Stephen Hillier, said: "The activities may have just looked like fun but they took the teenagers out of their comfort zones and the groups were also given increased responsibility during the week."

DOGS joined in the fun as Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club ended its 50th year with its traditional Christmas party.

Plenty of 'doggy' games were on offer as the usual large number of club members went along to Felpham Memorial Village Hall.

Press officer Phil Lewis said: "The club also made a presentation of £1,500 to the Sussex Pet Rescue charity.

This was raised at the club's annual companion dog show held in June.

"The cheque, pictured above, was presented by the show secretary, Alison Formaggia, secretary Hilary Sykes and treasurer Maureen Fitzgibbons to Laura Jenner, on behalf of the charity."

The ever-popular fancy dress competition at the party was won by Teddy, a Jack Russell owned by Phoebe Holden and dressed as a reindeer.

The club was founded in 1967 by Grace Morris and Pat White along with Peter Ball.

They decided a dog training club for Bognor Regis was needed because the nearest at that time was in East Preston.

"In September, 1967, Grace Morris took on the role of secretary and the new club started at the Holy Cross Church Hall in North Bersted.

"A committee was formed under the chairmanship of Peter Ball, with the first committee comprising Carol Loughlin, Mrs CampbellPeters, Pat White, Paddy Ball and the chairman was Dave Churchman," said Mr Lewis.

"And, after 50 years of dedication and hard work by many people, the club is still going strong."

The club is enjoying its Christsmas break but resumes training on January 4 and 5 at Felpham Memorial Village Hall.

MORE than half a million pounds was raised at a hospice's latest Snowman Spectacular Fundraising Ball.

The staggering total of £566,025 was a record in the ten years of the event in aid of Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

The Snowman was at the drinks reception at the Hilton Brighton Metropole to meet and greet guests, including DJ Ambrose Harcourt, pictured below.

He then joined host Danny Pike on stage at the start of the evening to deliver a special message from The Snowman's creator and illustrator and hospice patron, Raymond Briggs CBE. Danny read out his message: "I am delighted that my Snowman has helped Chestnut Tree House raise so much money over the last ten years to provide care for so many local children and families.

"I am sure the tenth Snowman Spectacular Ball will be amazing and I hope the guests will give generously to enable Chestnut Tree House to continue its vital work in our local community."

The ball is the biggest event in the fundraising calendar of the Poling-based hospice and is the best supported charity ball in the south-east.

The 564 guests enjoyed a three-course meal, an exclusive winter wonderland setting, an evening packed with entertainment and a host of fundraising activities.

Linda Perry, the director of children's services at the hospice, said she was incredibly grateful for the 'overwhelming support and generosity' shown by those who attended the ball. "£566,025 is an amazing amount of money and in total will pay for nearly 12 weeks of care provided by Chestnut Tree House both at the hospice and out in the community in families' own homes. To put this fundraising into perspective, the amount raised in this one incredible evening is more than twice as much as our annual grant from central government.

"So, it will really make a difference to the local life-limited children and families who need our help."

The ball's winter wonderland setting was inspired by the original The Snowman book and current stage show. It was complemented by a range of musical entertainment.

Around 300 children and their families are supported by the hospice. One of them, 18-year-old Rebecca Torricelli, spoke about how the hospice had helped her and her family since she began to use it when she was five.

f LAST W DROP-IN sessions and workshops have been held to ensure Arun District Council staff can play their part in keeping vulnerable residents safe.

The safeguarding day focused on educating employees to recognise the signs of abuse, mistreatment and neglect and how to report any concerns.

Some of the activities were staged by outside agencies which work in partnership with the council. They included West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Police and The Samaritans.

Cllr Mike Clayden, Arun's cabinet member for community wellbeing, was one of the councillors who attended the recent event.

He said: "We recognise that safeguarding children and vulnerable adults in the Arun district is paramount and it is our duty as a local authority to work in partnership to protect our vulnerable residents from harm.

"We have had very positive feedback from the event with both staff and councillors saying they feel much better informed about safeguarding issues."

Council employees who work in the community receive safeguarding training as part of their role.

And the event was aimed at educating other colleagues who may be less familiar with the issues involved.

The event also formed part of the West Sussex safeguarding awareness week earlier this month.

LISTENERS to Chichester Area Talking News can hear an interview with the city's MP. Gillian Keegan called into its studio earlier this month to be quizzed by talking news volunteer Geoffrey Archer for the charity's Insight magazine.

They talked about her early life as a child in Lancashire and Yorkshire and, especially, her extensive experience in business and technology.

Gillian said she thought

being a consistuency MP was the best job she could have after her election last June.

She also praised the work of volunteer groups like CATN. Her interview has been sent out as part of the quarterly Insight recorded magazine to all talking news listeners and can also be heard on the talking news website.

RESIDENTS of Bognor Regis and Chichester will have the chance to pose questions to the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner next month.

Written questions are being invited for Katy Bourne and the Sussex Police and Crime Panel meeting.

This will take place at 10.30am on January 19 at County Hall in Lewes.

The main item on the agenda is scrutiny of the commissioner's proposed precept. More information about the consultation can be seen at sussex-pcc.gov.uk/get-involved/public-consultations Members of the public can submit questions by writing to pcp@westsussex.gov.uk or telephoning 0330 222 2542.

A county council spokeswoman said: "Questions can be about any policy issue relating to policing in Sussex - but not related to operational policing matters or a live case.

The panel comprises councillors from all 15 local authorities across Sussex plus two independent members.

It carries out the role of scrutinising the actions and decisions of the commissioner.

History is all around on the town's campus Education is a tradition at historic site I THOUGHT that this week we could look at some of the buildings that have formed part of Chichester University, situated on the Upper Bognor Road, which is considered by most people to be just a connecting road between home and work - a road that is constantly busy, alongside the park.

The road leading from Felpham to the roundabout, near Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital, has enjoyed numerous names over the years, including Chichester Road, Upper Bognor Road and Hotham Way. However, it has not always been such a busy road. In the 1700s, it would have been no more than a small track linking Bersted and Felpham. With the arrival of Sir Richard Hotham and his aim to develop this seaside resort, all that was to change dramatically.

Therefore, looking along Hotham Way and Upper Bognor Road, we should start with the campus of the University of Chichester.

There are names here that will provide fond memories to those who were students at the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education, later to become part of the university, before they embarked on careers worldwide; namely Longbrook, St Michael’s, The Dome and Mordington.

I thought we could begin our tour by looking at St Michael’s, which was originally known

as East Lodge, and later from 1856 to 1940s became known as Arran Lodge when it was used as a school for young ladies. Today, St Michael's is a Grade II-listed building and is described as being of 'two storeys, 12 windows... the porch is glazed with a flat segmental fanlight'.

By 1911, reports in the local town guides recorded Bognor as an educational centre because, "at the present day there is a general feeling that the education of our sons and daughters should be carried on amidst an agreeable and healthful environment".

An early advertisement for the school explained it was a Church of England boarding school for the daughters of gentlemen. It is now a conference centre used by the college students and lecturers and was once used by the Bognor Regis Local History Society for its monthly speakers.

We arrive next at The Dome, another Grade II listed building. It was originally part of a crescent of three houses built about 1790 and called Hothampton Crescent. The central section known as The Dome was described

by Anthony Dale, an architectural historian, as "the best example of late 18th century work in any seaside town in Sussex". It has been suggested that the architect was Richard Jupp, who was surveyor to the East India Company

of which Sir Richard Hotham was a director.

Over the years, photographers and artists have used the entrance to the building, with its simple flight of steps and patterned railings to illustrate their arts. Principally, The Dome was in private hands until Sir John Maud officially opened the Bognor Regis Training College on October 22, 1946, which was reported of as 'an event of no little local interest'. It was planned as an emergency training centre to provide a one-year course for men and women from the armed forces or other forms of national service that wished to enter the teaching profession.

By 1977, the institute was to merge with Bishop Otter College, Chichester, to prevent possible closure of the premises.

Next is Mordington which was built in the 1790s and is another Grade II-listed building, with its very distinctive entrance. This building was once known as West Lodge, and consisted of two separate residences. The original two residences shared the entrance and each had a dining and breakfast room on the ground floor, a drawing room and bedroom on the first floor, with five more bedrooms on the top floor.

The servants, of course, resided in the basement. This building also remained in private hands until the 1930s. By 1936, the Woodard Corporation had bought Mordington as part of St. Michael’s school. This school was evacuated in 1941 but sadly did not return after the war. However, in 1991 the house was restored as part of a £1.3m project. It is now an historical building containing educational facilities, including IT, for the 21st century.

One of the buildings was known as Northcliffe House School from 1920s until 1944 and was popular with families who wished to send their sons into the Royal Navy. One of the

most famous pupils at Northcliffe was David Sheppard, who was to become an England cricketer and, ultimately, the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool.

We can now view this final set of buildings in a different light as they have changed dramatically in recent years - namely Spencer Terrace, Redgate House and The Shrubbery.

All these buildings were constructed for Sir Richard’s dream in the 1790s and they have all been both private residences and educational premises. They have survived many architectural and council plans for their use and in the 1990s there were plans to demolish them to enable houses to be built on the site.

Thankfully, these plans never materialised and instead they were converted.

They were converted by two separate companies and sold by local estate agents.

The advertising literature for these new homes was very impressive and came complete with a small history of Sir Richard. Within Spencer Terrace, the apartments are interestingly named, Hotham’s Hide, Hope House, The Earl’s Suite, Pigeons, Fletcher’s View, Hothampton, Senlac and Hotham View. Some names are obvious, others are not!

Within Redgate House, the apartments are contained within a 'classical stucco fronted’ Georgian mansion house'. The apartments are named Turner’s Rest, The Hatters, The Meads, The Reynolds, Hartwell, and Conder.

Finally, we come to the Shrubbery, which has been converted by another company into five 'uniquely styled apartments' It is excellent these properties have been so lovingly restored to prestigious apartments for the town. It is good to see today’s developers can treat our historical buildings with care.

Supporter for a Music Class for People with a Learning Disability (Apuldram Centre) – Workers Educational Association (WEA) The Apuldram Centre is a work/training base for people with a learning disability. The WEA provides a class once a week for people who wish to take part in a music session. A supporter is needed to maximise the participation of the people who attend the group, and also to support the tutor with paperwork. The person should have an interest in enabling people with a learning disability to achieve their maximum within their chosen interests.

No previous experience is required as long as the person feels they can empathise with vulnerable adults. An interest in music would be appreciated, as would any ability within the field of music.

Bereavement Counsellors, Administrative Support Volunteers and Fundraising Support – Cruse Bereavement Care Cruse Bereavement Care offers free and confidential counselling plus social support and practical advice for all those bereaved.

Blues urged to step up their defence PostSport despite another bonus point victory CHICHESTER RFC's promotion push remains alive - but the Blues must tighten up their defence if they are to regain their National League spot.

Scott Ashley's side remain fourth in London One South, seven points off top spot, after a hard-earned bonus point victory away at Old Colfeians.

In what was a real game of two halves, Chi stormed out to a 26-0 lead at the break. But the south London hosts hit back, with Chi only securing the victory thanks to a converted try from long distance.

Next up is a home match against Hampshire side Tottonians tomorrow (2pm), who sit sixth and who proved a tough nut for Chi to crack earlier in the campaign.

They will be hoping for the return of influential Number 8 Chris Johnson, whose departure last weekend triggered a second half fightback from Colfeians.

Speaking after the OCs win, club spokesman Roger Gould said: "This pulsating and see-saw game provided a classic menu of emotions for the cold supporters. Ecstasy, agony and relief were experienced in a dream first half for Chichester followed by a nightmare second.

"This was Chi’s tenth win in 13 matches but they were hanging on by their finger tips at the end. There needs to be much improvement in their defensive strategy to stay in the leading group."

Chi took control of the match early on, Johnson touching down as the pack pushed forward after a lineout take. They made it two moments later, when flanker Charlie Wallace crossed the line after a similar move.

The Blues moved into a 19-0 lead on 25 minutes. After good interplay by backs and forwards, prop Joe Woods took the ball well, bouncing a tackler and hurling his big torso under the posts. Tom Hutchin converted.

The bonus point was secured just before the break, Eddie Jenkinson and Sam Renwick putting winger Ben Heber on his way from 25 metres to go around the posts for the score and make it 26-0 at the interval.

But after the break the Blues lost their momentum, allowing the hosts to hit back as Johnson departed.

Chi added a fifth win thanks to Hutchin completing a breakaway. They needed the seven points too as OCs reduced the deficit to just five as time ticked down.

WITH a few weeks to go before the Christmas break, the Friday Benevolent Darts League Divisional Trebles knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club.

With 24 teams taking part across three contest, the field was small but the competition was fierce.

In division three, the final was between Des Ling, Debbie Ling & Glo Greene (BRSA Jokers) and the Middleton family of Steve, Dan and Jamie (Newtown C).

The final saw the BRSA trio win the bullseye, but the larger scores came from the Newtown. With two scores of 85 helping them on the way to the doubles, it wasn't long before Steve Middleton hit double eight to secure the first leg.

The second leg started with 85 & 100 from the Middleton's, but the Ling's started with 81 & 93. Newtown had the first shots at the double but their opponents soon caught up.

But with 48 left, Debbie Ling missed double 16 for the match, and Greene had a shot as well but missed. Then Dan Middleton stepped up and with his first dart hit double one for the leg and the match, making them Division Three Trebles champions.

In Division Two, Richard Pennells, Stuart Gray & Paul Bizzell (QE2 Galleon) and Karl Wingate, Dave Wingate & James Riggs (Friary D) faced off in the final.

Friary eventually got off to a great start with scores of 121, 95, 100 & 83 on the trot. Gray hit the first ton for his team, but by that time his opponents were nearly on their double. Dave Wingate just missed double 16, but Riggs hit double eight with his second dart to take the leg. Once again the Friary trio took the lead in the second leg, with tons from Dave Wingate and from Riggs. With the QE2 getting closer all Wingate needed was one dart to hit double 18, taking the leg, and making his team Division Two Trebles champions.

Purple and Greens make it 8 in a row

BOGNOR RFC can go a long way to sealing a top two finish as they prepare to welcome high-flying Millbrook to town.

It's second versus third tomorrow as the Purple and Greens welcome the Southampton side to Hampshire Avenue (2.30pm).

With five points separating the top three, Bognor know they will need to be at their best if they are to hold on to second spot and keep up the pressure on Hampshire One league leaders United Services.

But the Purple and Greens head into the match after stretching their winning run to eight, after a battling victory over Isle of Wight.

Bognor were made to work for the success against the islanders, overcoming a poor start to seal a 22-21 win, which keeps them in touch at the top.

It was the hosts who were quicker out of the blocks, scoring two quick tries to head into a 14-0 lead.

Bognor hit back through full back Pat Gibbs, who got the ball out wide after pin-

point passing from Sam Newcombe and Josh Burgess.

The Number 15 shimmied one way and then came back inside to finish perfectly over the whitewash to make the score 14-5.

The purple and greens continued the resurgence, the pack pushing over to score through Jonny Lang after excellent line-out work from Chris Webb and Number 8 Lee Balchin for 14-10 But it was the islanders who finished the half on top, crossing for their third try just before the half time break.

In the second period, Bognor knew they had to pull out all the stops. They did so through young guns Lang and Webb, who released winger Paddy Burnett and then slipped the ball to Alex Bosley for the score.

The win was then sealed by man of the match Webb, with the prop who fed on the pop-up ball from ten metres out to cross the line and clinch the win by the narrowest of margins.

The Division One final pitched Wayne Wadsworth, Rob Collins & his son Billy Collins (Friary Z) against a made up team of Graham Clear & Rick Cousins (Hunston Hares) with Alex Norgett (Newtown Amity).

Friary made the quicker start with a few larger scores against their opponents.

With 32 left, Rob Collins stepped up and hit the double 16 with the first dart for the first leg.

The second leg saw some steady scores from Clear, Cousins & Norgett, but with two tons from Rob Collins, and another ton from his son Billy, the Friary team took the lead. Eventually, it was Wadsworth who hit double seven with his first dart to take the Division 1 Trebles champions title for himself and the Collins' boys.

Selsey up to sixth as late Morey strike seals back-to-back wins

City deflated after Vase win CHICHESTER City assistant manager Graeme Gee admits his side have been left 'deflated' on their return to league action after their FA Vase exploits.

The Lillywhites made it into the fourth round of the national non-league knockout competition after a hit-andrun victory at Whitstable Town a fortnight ago.

But, on their return to the SCFL Premier, second-place Chi lost ground on leaders Haywards Heath with a 0-0 home draw to Broadbridge Heath.

With the sides below them winning, Miles Rutherford's team have now dropped to fourth.

Chi had a chance to bounce back on Tuesday but their scheduled RUR cup quarter final with Horsham YMCA was postponed due to the weather.

It has been rearranged for Tuesday (7.45pm).

That makes tomorrow's match away at relegationthreatened Arundel (3pm) crucial if the Oaklands Park outfit are to stay on course for promotion.

Premier side Worthing.

Herbert had two of Chi's better chances in the stalemate against Broadbridge Heath.

It was the visitors, though, who could have won all three points late on, but the officials ruled out a late strike for an infringement.

That decision extended Chi's run of clean sheets to six matches. But it is at the other end of the pitch where they need to start firing, with Herbert's departure putting more pressure on leading scorer Scott Jones and the returning Scott Murfin, who has yet to score on his return to Oaklands.

Speaking after the Heath match, assistant manager Gee said: “After the highs of last week, we're obviously a little bit deflated. We wanted to pick up the three points and keep in touch with the leaders and all the other sides around us.

"The players didn't really perform in the first 45 minutes.

It's always difficult and you can't turn a game on and off like a tap. We've been a little bit too inconsistent all year if I'm honest. We've still got faith in the players that we've got at this football club. They're all good players."

SELSEY will be looking to make it three wins in a row for the first time since September as Steve Bailey's side continue to halt the slide.

After a strong start to the season that saw them top of SCFL Division One in September, the Blues suffered an absymal autumn which saw them drop into the mid-table pack.

But Bailey's young side have turned the corner in recent weeks, following up a 2-0 win on the road at Hailsham with another successful away trip at Ringmer last weekend.

Tom Jefkins gave Selsey the lead before the home side scored twice in the second half to put them in the driving seat.

Ryan Morey drew the Blues level with 20 minutes to go, seizing on a defensive mistake to make it 2-2.

Then, with one minute to go and the game opening up, it was the former Pagham man who scored the winner, bagging his brace and taking Selsey back up the table.

Tomorrow is another road trip, with struggling St Francis Rangers the opponents at the Colwell Ground (3pm).

Even though they are just five points above the drop zone, Saints have only lost one of the last four.

Pagham boss unfazed by loss Ne

PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds vows his young Lions side will continue to take each game as it comes - despite his side suffering their first defeat in 11.

The Nyetimber Lane side had strung together a fine run which included winning eight of nine matches - including a 1-0 win over Isthmian South leaders Lewes in the Sussex Senior Cup - to take them up to fourth in the SCFL Premier.

But that streak was brought to an end last weekend when Pagham suffered a 2-0 loss away at Horsham YMCA. The Lions - who have dropped to sixth after

the defeat - lost out on a chance to bounce back when their RUR Cup quarter final at Crawley Down Gatwick was postponed in midweek. It will take place this Tuesday (7.30pm).

Before then is a local derby with Littlehampton Town in front of a home crowd tomorrow (3pm). Despite the Golds sitting bottom with just three wins all season, Pagham know they cannot afford to take chances if they want to get back to winning ways.

Simmonds said: "We will take each game as it comes. We have got to this point dealing with each one as it comes so I don’t see any reason

for drastic changes to the side.

"We have an unbelievably young squad with the average age around 21. If we can keep the group together, then there's no reason why we cannot be where Lewes are now. That’s where we want to be."

Central to the Lions run has been the form of striker Dan Simmonds, who has scored 12 in eight league games since his return to the club.

Tom Simmonds said: "Dan has been massive for us. He had signed for us at the start of the season but left when he got offered the chance of playing at a higher level.

"Since he has come back from [Isthmian South side] Shoreham, he has had a big impact on the side. With him back up front we have tinkered the way we play a little bit. But it's not just Dan, it's also Shay Wiggins and James Thurgar who have had an impact. Since we have had those three in the side we have lost just once."

Simmonds needs no reminder that defeat came last time out - which makes the match at Littlehampton a very important game. * Elsewhere, SCFL Division Two side Sidlesham lost the chance to close the gap on league leaders Roffey as their clash was cancelled last weekend.

The Sids, who are third, face Alfold away tomorrow (3pm) looking to make up ground as they are seven points off the top spot.

Bosham host second-place Rustington at Walton Lane tomorrow (3pm) a week on from drawing with Ferring 3-3.

Hard work and heart behind Chi's success CHICHESTER City Ladies head into the Christmas period full of hope for a prosperous new year.

Their management team are putting the team's excellent start to the season down to hard work and heart.

The Oaklands Park side have put in a strong showing in the first few months of their first ever season in the FA Women's Premier League South.

With five wins, four draws and four defeats, Matt Wright's side are sixth in the 12-team division.

After last weekend's league match with Gillingham was postponed because of the wet weather, Chi now have a month off to reflect on the season so far.

It also gives manager Matt Wright time to prepare for a new year clash with division one south east side Luton Town in the third round of the FA Women's Cup. The clash with the Hatters on January 7 at Oaklands Park (1.30pm) was secured after an extra time 4-2 victory over C&K Basildon in front of a bumper home crowd.

Jade Widdows, Jess Lewry, Cherelle Khassal and Emma Alexandre scored the goals to seal Chi's safe passage to the next round.

Speaking after the match, first team coach Aaron Lucas said: "Throughout the season one thing that we pride ourselves on is our heart and our spirit. Sometimes that heart and spirit comes through and carries us to the line."

League is Rocks' priority as tough FA Trophy trip looms Next Game

TAUNTON TOWN (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce vows National South safety remains the main goal this season - though he admits a decent cup run could help the Rocks pull themselves clear from trouble.

With half the campaign gone, the Nyewood Lane side sit second bottom of the very competitive National League South.

After picking up a point on the road at Bath City last time out, Pearce's charges are four points from safety with 21 games gone.

While performances have picked up in recent weeks, Bognor are still missing the crucial element of goals, meaning they have not always got their just desserts.

Tomorrow brings a chance to change that, with the Rocks heading to Somerset to face Southern South side Taunton Town in the first round of the FA Trophy (3pm).

While the game against a team two levels below will be far from easy, the Rocks boss believes it could be beneficial for the club's future hopes.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "The league is what it is all about and that's where we want to be next season. That's everything to us at this time.

"The trophy run is important from a point of view of giving the lads confidence as it gives us the opportunity to earn some money and a bit of a break from the pressure of wining points.

"From that respect it's a good game to have. I just hope the weather is OK and we don't have

to go down there in midweek for a rematch."

Bognor return to the West Country after securing a very good point away at Bath City last time out.

The Rocks dominated for large periods but could not get the breakthrough, and had keeper Dan Lincoln to thank for the 0-0 draw.

Pearce said: "I think when you are second to bottom in the league any away point is welcomed. Even if you are up the top, you are happy with point away from home.

"Bath are a good team, they are a big football club. They have not lost in six so I'm delighted with a point there."

Next up is Taunton Town, a team the Rocks are familiar with after defeating them 4-1 two seasons ago in the qualifying rounds of the same competition.

On that day only one division separated the two teams. Now, the gap is two rungs. But the Somerset side are performing extremely well, sitting 13 points clear at the top of their league.

The Peacocks defeated National South side Concord Rangers 3-2 in the last round.

Pearce said: "They are top of a league and have won a few games to give them a good winning mentality. They are very confident in what they are doing "But I am confident we will give them a very good game of football and pretty confident we will have chances to win the game. You don't win games of football unless you score goals."

Bognor still seek goal machine IT'S NOT often you hear Bognor boss Jack Pearce apologising. But this past week, during his weekly chat to the Post, he was sorry for sounding like a broken record.

Every week, he says, the reflection on the previous Saturday's match is the same.

He said: "We controlled the game at Bath for long periods, incredibly well for a team that's desperate for points, but we are lacking when it comes to finishing off the game."

Goals. It's how football games are won.

But the Rocks have been lacking in this crucial category for all but the opening month of the season.

It's an area which the Bognor boss knows he needs to improve on - although that is very much easier said than done.

He said: "There's still more work to do and none of our problems have changed, in that we have a lack of goals in the side.

"We have been trying to address that for the last four months. The forwards are not just out there to go and get them.

"We keep trying and talking - we have been talking to two or three this week but whether they come or not is another matter. The fact is we are not as attractive a club to other people as we are to our own supporters and players."

PICKING up four points from six off a team that finished in the top six last season is never a bad return.

That's why, even though we are struggling, we should be happy with how we have performed against Bath City in two games.

We picked up a very valuable point on the road at Twerton Park with that 0-0 draw.

I think looking at the balance of the first half we were very dominant and then as the second period went on they came into it. Then, as I seem to be writing quite a lot recently, Dan Lincoln produced a good save late on to ensure we took home a point.

Chad Field was outstanding throughout all of the game so I think that gives you an indication of the match.

But, as I said, to take four points off Bath City as we have done is a good return and now we need to kick on.

It was an interesting stadium to play at. There were a lot of people there which is always good. And I had played there before so it was not a new experience for me.

The ground is very reminiscent of Grimsby - an old ground and them playing in black and white.

But while the lads maybe mention the stadium and the atmosphere a little when we're all warming up, you don’t talk about those things really during the match.

Next up we have another trip to the West Country to play Southern Division One side Taunton Town in the FA Trophy.

We played them away three years ago when they were flying and we were flying, albeit playing one league lower when where we are at the moment. We won quite comfortably that day.

But it is never good playing a team in form even if they are two levels below us, as winning games becomes a habit.

We have to travel down there knowing that we will be in for

a tough match and be ready to perform.

It is the second week running we have done a long road trip to the West Country.

The routine is pretty similar.

We get a text on Thursday or Friday from club secretary Simon Cook who tells us where the meet will be.

There's usually a few pick-up points for everyone - so the Pompey lads get picked up at Farlington while those based near Bognor and Brighton meet at Fontwell or at the club.

We all meet up as a big group and try to get there 10 to 15 minutes early so can get a coffee and have a chat.

Then on the coach one of the lads normally brings a DVD with them so we stick that on.

Usually that finishes about half hour out from the ground so at that point everyone gets in the zone.

Even being out injured, I try and stay in that routine.

I feel that at this time the club needs people who are for the club and it is a no-brainier that, unless I can’t physically be there, I continue supporting the team.

On the shoulder, I had a preop assessment last week which means I am now on the waiting list. I'm hoping Jack can sort that out as soon as possible as there's a two-month recovery period after it.

Hopefully, I can be playing again by the back end of the season. Before then, though, we have things to do on the pitch. The Trophy match is a big one as we just need to get through to the next round.

But, with Poole and Havant to come, it will be good to build some momentum as we have not strung two wins together for a while now.

Both of them we can beat if we turn up on the day. And Havant we played twice last year and could have beaten them on both occasions.

It all starts with a win at Taunton, though, and then hopefully things will fall into place.
