Residents want out of Arun ANGRY Pagham residents have called on the government to investigate Arun District Council.

THey have said the local authority was not fit for purpose and its actions should be looked into by the secretary of state for communities and local government, Sajid Javid.

David Huntley, chairman of Pagham Beach Residents’ Association, said a meeting of residents, some are pictured

above, had agreed the request.

“Arun should act in our interest and appear to be accountable,” he told Mr Javid. “(But) it is not interested in what the locals think. It disregards the parish council’s views and dictates to us.

“Please could you investigate Arun District Council as most of us in Pagham are fed up with being ignored and treated with contempt?”

Call made for help for improvements USERS of an Aldwick park have been asked for their opinions about how to improve its children's play area.

Questionnaires were handed out last THursday and Friday to those who were enjoying West Park to gain their views.

THe results will be considered by Aldwick Parish Council, along with landowner Arun District Council, to find out the most popular suggestions.

Cllr Lilian Richardson, the parish council's chairman, said it was the latest project which its members wanted to do to help improve residents' lives.

"We are now thinking of putting a sum of money into the play area. It will be good to improve it. THe site is fantastically well used," she said.

THe potential scheme follows on from improvements the parish council helped to create at the play areas at Avisford Parl recreation ground in Rose Green - which cost £23,000 - and the £9,000 contribution towards the site at Queens Field in West Meads.

THe parish council will hold its 400th meeting on October 23 after it was established in 1984 and is looking for three members to joined the existing 11 councillors. Cllr Mrs Richardson said the works had shown the parish council's continued relevance.

"We get money from the council tax precept from residents and we look at the area and try to keep it as good as it is.

"Aldwick is such a nice place to live.

THat's what we want it to stay as - a good place for people to live, bring up their

children, enjoy the seaside and have a semi-rural living."

THe parish council was also heavily involved in the £80,000 traffic calming scheme recently installed in Fish Lane by West Sussex County Council in response to residents' concerns.

Its members backed a pedestrian crossing put in at Nyetimber Lane last autumn as well as improving the looks of roundabouts at Hewarts Lane/Chalcraft Lane and Barrack Lane/Aldwick Street.

Other improvements in which the parish council has played a part include £98,000 from the county council to improve drainage at the duck pond. But a lot of work was carried out by the parish council behind the scenes, she said.

"People don't see the hours our planning committee spend looking at planning applications or the decisions that are made by councillors most weeks.

"Most councillors are members of one or two committees and I would say that takes up a couple of hours a week.

"I also expect councillors to take their role seriously and turn up at the meetings having read their papers," added Cllr Mrs Richardson.

A county council spokesman said: "We have been working closely with Aldwick Parish Council on the scheme that seeks to address concerns raised by residents of perceived high vehicle speeds in Fish Lane.

"THe works include installation of 'built out gateways', plus road markings and coloured surfacing improvements."

Holidaymakers can enjoy site in Pagham for longer each year VISITORS are able to stay on a Pagham site for another month.

Church Farm Holiday Village is allowed to welcome tourists during November for the first time.

THe site's owners, Bourne Leisure, has been given planning permission

by Arun District Council to extend the period when it can be occupied from March 1 until November 30.

Council planning officer Simon Davis says in his report: "It is considered that this application to extend the existing holiday season by one month will benefit the local economy through additional spending on local shops and services

and potential new or continued employment of local people."

THe restriction was likely to have been imposed in November, 1964.

A bid by the site's previous owner to remove it was rejected in October, 1993.

Natural England raised no objection to the proposal provided Bourne Leisure paid towards work at the neighbouring local nature reserve.

THis has been agreed at £32,286.

Four letters objecting to the extra month because of noise and disturbance were received by Arun.

Mr Davis has imposed conditions on the approval to limit any impact.

Binsted protesters say no to road route

Arun buys Arcade f Protesters gather at Binsted NO OPTION 5A - that was the chant being made by hundreds of protesters who met on Sunday to unite against the proposed A27 route through Binsted.

A consultation is being held by Highways England to improve the road around Arundel.

THe proposed option 5A would see a new dual-carriageway between Crossbush junction and Ford Road. From Ford Road, the route would continue west passing through the South Downs National Park and Binsted Woods, rejoining the existing A27 at a new junction near Yapton Lane.

Lifetime resident, farmer and main landowner, Luke Wishart, says his claim to fame includes being only one of two people who were born and still residing in Binsted and that Binsted is his middle name.

He said: "We are adamantly against Option 5A. Option 3 was selected in 1987 as the preferred route but unhappily it goes through the ancient Sussex woodland and this is added costs .

"My attitude is that Option 5A is a disaster, personally for me in the farming

sense but also for the village and for the ecology here whereas Option 3 doesn't have those disadvantages and doesn't disturb anybody, other than one house.

"Option 1 is not really acceptable to the people in Arundel and I rather feel with them because it does actually cut the Arundel town into two."

THe activists met at Flint Barn on Sunday to voice their concerns on the devastation the road would have on the village. THey then followed the proposed route through woodlands on the edge of the South Downs, passing a 7m tall tower built to show the scale of a planned road embankment. THe walk finished at Binsted Park, where the crowds heard speeches made by members of various groups.

Dr Tony Whitbread, chief executive of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: "I'm particularly concerned about the environmental damage that is going to be caused by this proposed road.

"THere is a whole matrix of habitat here.

It's not only the damage to individual habitats. It's the way the whole ecological matrix is being damaged by

this proposal."

David Sawyer, chairman of the South Downs Society, said: "We are all very lucky people to be living where we live, in a national park.

"THe legislation set up the national parks to preserve landscapes of exceptional beauty. I've only got to stand here today to see how justified it is for here.

"Certainly choosing between Option 5A and 3, which we hope not to do of course, 3 is much better, it's much less of a scar on the landscape.

"Option 1 is a minimal scheme at a relatively low cost and it doesn't attract new traffic, which is the problem with both Option 3 and Option 5A. In a speech, ABNC - A27 Arundel Bypass Neighbourhood Committee spokesman and villager Mike Tristram said: "It's a shocker. 5A is the worst option Highways England could choose for its impact on farming, history, rural community life, wildlife and natural beauty and yet they seem to be headed that way." * See page 11

Teenage drug dealer jailed - see page 5

A MAJOR boost has been revealed for Bognor Regis town centre.

Arun District Council has bought one of its most important shopping locations.

THe purchase of the Arcade, between High Street and Belmont Street, is promised to be the start of a new lease of life for the building.

THe unique site has suffered in recent years from a series of empty units. THere were five vacant outlets and 12 occupied ones in the Arcade's central section this week.

Cllr Phil Hitchins, who chairs the council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee, said: "THis is a great opportunity for the regeneration of the town.

"THe council can now protect and care for the Arcade as one of the most attractive, desirable and best located retail buildings in the town.

"As the Arcade is currently home to about a third of all the vacant properties across the whole town centre, we look forward to working with the town centre manager and other partners, and seeing the Arcade filled with new and vibrant local businesses once again."

Prominent Bognor builder William Tate began work on the Arcade in 1901. He completed it in July the following year.

It was the largest area of privatelyowned property in the town and consisted of 24 shops and a similar number of offices.

Extensive damage to 14 of the shops

was caused by a fire in 1930. Major rebuilding works took place without altering the external appearance of the building.

It has been owned by a national company for many years. A programme of works it carried out last year brightened up the empty shop windows.

Arun has vowed to work with property agents and the town centre manager, Toyubur Rahman, to fill the vacant units, improve the premises and restore the site as a key attraction in the town.

THe Arcade is strategically located between the heart of the town centre and the Regis Centre development site owned by the council and intended for a Winter Gardens attraction and a cultural hub.

Arun's cabinet member for technical services, Stephen Haymes, said: "As part of our property investment strategy, we are buying the freehold of the Arcade first and foremost to generate an income stream for the council. We look forward to working with the current tenants and we know that the Arcade has real potential to grow this income as the vacant units are let."

THe cost of the purchase has not been disclosed by the council.

As reported last month, councillors gave their director of place, Karl Roberts, approval to spend up to ÂŁ750,000 on a business building to enable the council to compile a portfolio of commercial premises.

` Latest library talk BEST-SELLING author Graham Minett will be talking about his writing career at Bognor Regis Library.

Graham is the guest speaker at the library's latest drop-in literary lunchtime talk.

It will take place from 12.10pm12.50pm next Wednesday at the London Road venue.

Pagham resident Graham has seen his first two crime books - The Hidden Legacy and Lie in Wait sell thousands of copies.

He will discuss his path to publication, including how he started writing, why it took so long to find an agent and publisher, and what happens after an author has secured a book deal.

Graham studied at Cambridge and spent many years as a foreign language teacher.

He then studied for an MA in creative writing at the University of Chichester and won the 2010 Chapter One Prize for unpublished novels with the first chapter of The Hidden Legacy.

New oil well being drilled DRILLING has begun of a second oil well in Lidsey.

Oilfield operator Angus Energy has announced work is well underway at the site to enable it to increase production.

A 9 5/8ins steel casing has been set and cemented into the ground and the company has drilled the 8 1/2ins section which passes through the Kimmeridge layer of earth.

THis will be followed by a 6ins section to be drilled though the Great Oolite production reservoir in the rock formation. Work is likely to be completed soon. Paul Vonk, Angus Energy’s managing director, said: “We are pleased with the progress of drilling Lidsey-X2 and look forward to start producing again from the Lidsey oil site this month.”

Angus temporarily suspended production from the original well to enable work to take place on the second one. Lidsey X-2 will be a conventional production well which targets the Great Oolite reservoir.

As reported, Angus received approval from West Sussex County Council to enable it to use the Sack Lane site for further production. THe Oil and Gas Authority has also backed the company’s plans. It has now sought permission from the Environment Agency to vary its environmental permit to use both wells.

THe changes add four mining waste operations to the current licence. THey include temporary storage of acid waste and of waste generated from invasive well maintenance.

Information in a summary produced

for Angus Energy by SLR Consulting for the application states: “THe crude oil is temporarily stored on site, within one of four 95.4 cubic metre capacity storage tanks allowing stabilisation – oil and water separation – via gravity.

“THe combined storage capacity for oil at the site is 381.6 cubic metres, the equivalent of eight days’ worth of production.” THis is just under 600 barrels of oil. Once separation has occurred, the water is sent to the fellow Angus Energy site at Brockham to be re-used.

THe oil is transported to the Hamble Refinery in Hampshire. A total of 16 responses to the consultation have been published by the Environment Agency on its website. One states: “I do not believe this application should be permitted for the health and safety of the local people, the local wildlife and the health of the whole planet.”

Another says: “THe site is far too close for comfort to the local village and also a local nature reserve and the danger to these from the movement by road of both equipment and materials taken from any such well should not be under estimated.”

But another comments: “I believe Angus Energy should be supported in their activities. Provided these resources can be extracted in an environmentally sensitive way, it can only be of benefit to the UK.” Oil began to flow from the original well in 2008. Angus has a 60 per cent interest in the original well and 50 per cent in the second well.

THe wine tasting and talk at Pagham Village Hall last Saturday was attended by 38 people.

Janet Dale, the association's press officer, said: "THe talk was very well received and was both interesting and entertaining.

"Martin's knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject quickly spilled into the audience who were keen to taste the variety of red and white wines and Champagne he had chosen.

"THey were soon selecting their own preferences.

"THe most enjoyable evening finished with a light supper and prize draw when three lucky people won bottles of Champagne and wine."

THe association is in its 50th year and this year bought its fifth minibus, as reported, and carries more than 2,500 passengers every year and a further 1,500 passengers for events and local charitable organisations.

Teenage dealer jailed after police find drugs in town

A TEENAGE drug dealer has been jailed after he was found in a Bognor Regis property with heroin and crack cocaine worth nearly £2,000.

Kamali Gabbidon-Lynck, 18, pleaded guilty to five charges and was given a 32 month custodial sentence for possession with intent to supply heroin, a 32 month custodial sentence for possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and a 12 month custodial sentence for acquiring, using or possessing a criminal property.

Gabbidon-Lynck was arrested at a property in Queensway on August 18 after it was believed he was involved in the supply of drugs.

He was found to be in possession of a large amount of cash, a small piece of cannabis resin and two mobile phones.

An inspection of the phones confirmed the police's suspicion that GabbidonLynck, from Enfield in London, was a drug dealer.

THe teenager was taken to the Chichester custody centre to be searched.

But the police officers suspected he was concealing items in his rectum. He was taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester for an examination.

Gabbidon-Lynck attempted to escape from the police but officers stopped him and spotted he had a bulge, about the size of a golf ball, in the back of his jogging bottoms by his calf.

THis was believed to be the drugs he had concealed in his body.

A further inspection of the package revealed it to be wraps of crack cocaine and heroin with an estimated street value of £1,750. THis led to him being charged on the five counts.

Detective Constable Jo French, of West Sussex Investigations, based at Chichester, said: "We were able to take a large quantity of drugs off the streets and this, along with the court result, is a great achievement for us.

"We will continue to work hard to tackle this type of offending and keeping the communities safe."

Health event success MENTAL health facts were available at the first day of its kind in Bognor Regis Library.

Information about depression, anxiety and mental wellbeing was given out at the world mental health day event. Some 35 people went along to the occasion, held jointly by Coastal West Sussex Mind and West Sussex Library Service.

More than half of them took part in free mindfulness sessions run by Sharon Mitchell. She said: "Mindfulness is all about being completely in the moment without being dragged around by what has happened or what might happen.

"We used meditation from Buddhist practices so people can centre themselves in the present time.

"A lot of people take part because they are suffering from depression or anxiety or because they are concerned about their mental health."

A total of nine organisations were present at Tuesday's event in the library's recently refurbished first floor.

THey included My Sisters' House, THe Samaritans, Sage Counselling and Sussex Recovery College.

Former college pupil Sharon Mayes was present to talk about her experiences and about Radio Respect which provides current news about mental health.

She said: "Some people didn't know about the college. I told them about the difference it had made to my life. THey were interested to find out about my experiences."

Visitors to the event were welcomed by town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall and the town crier, Jane Smith.

Jo Bulis is Coastal West Sussex Mind's Bognor Regis services manager. She said: "Today's gone very well. We've had a lot of people through.

"We've held events with the library before but nothing on this particular day."

Community librarian Rebecca Robertson said: "THis has been a one-stop shop of information. We wanted to raise awareness of mental health and that it is OK to talk about it."

THe library takes part in the Books on Prescription service where residents can get books from GPs.

THe three sites earmarked in Arun’s local plan planning blueprint for 1,200 homes had to be added to the 2,500 properties intended for neighbouring Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted.

“THe sites are Grade One very fertile agricultural land in the Manhood Peninsular, one of the most productive areas in the country with a very long growing season and most sunshine hours.

“THe Manhood Peninsular produces 10 per cent of Britain’s vegetables and fruit.

“THe sites are right next to Pagham Harbour, an international Ramsar site and Special Protection Area nature reserve, " said Mr Huntley.

“Chichester District Council has no plans to build anywhere near them in their local plan. THey are feeding grounds for winter migrants in Pagham Harbour.”

THe other reason for the dissatisfaction was Arun’s management of Pagham Beach with the growth of the Church Norton shingle spt, said Mr Huntley.

THis had allowed a ‘catastrophic erosion and a ferocious scour current to develop despite historical evidence (1850-1875) to show this would threaten the beach and houses behind’.

Another seven examples were given by Mr Huntley about the situation around the beach which had contributed to the current feeling. “We are being made to pay for Arun’s mistakes and failure to listen to local knowledge and history,” he added.

Events review is requested CALLS have been made for summer events in Bognor Regis to be better coordinated.

Two councillors have separately said the schedule of crowd-pulling occasions needed to be considered to make sure the town capitalised as much as possible on its tourism attractions.

Town Cllr Jan Cosgrove has tabled a motion for next Monday's policy and resources committee meeting to ensure the council gets the best value for the thousands of pounds it spends with organisers.

"THe issue here is best value re events and how they can be linked to economic/ business wellbeing," he said.

"For example, who can provide information as to reasonably accurate attendance figures, comparisions with previous years, impact on shopping areas' footfall and additional purchasing?

"Events are agreed to be important aspects of our work in the town, especially for this committee re those economic and best value issues."

Cllr Cosgrove said he was sympathetic to the roles of the organisers of big events such as the International Bognor Birdman and Rox in the face of having to find enough funding. But questions had to be asked about the value the council was getting for its backing.

An electors' meeting might be needed to enable residents to put their views as well as a debate by council committees.

He outlined nine questions which he

wanted the council to answer about its role with backing events.

THey include the need for a standard set of facts the council should expect from organisers, the need for the council to work out how it can achieve best value from the events, the possible benefits of a common marketing strategy and looking into a possible Bognor Regis Festival Season.

At a town council events, promotions and leisure committee meeting on Monday, district Cllr Paul Wells said: "THere seems to be various groups doing various things in the town, which is good and there are a lot of positives about it.

"Arun District Council is doing one thing, the town council is doing one thing and the town centre manager is doing things as well.

"Going forward, perhaps there needs to be some joined up thinking?

"Everyone has their own agenda about what they want to do for the town.

"With the new business improvement district for the town next April, there does need to be better discussion between all the parties to make sure the money that is generally available is spent wisely and for the benefit of the general area.

"I've no expectations as to how that might take shape."

Committee chairman Cllr Jim Brooks said a debate was due to take place next month about forming a working group to look at the council's involvement with events and how they were promoted.

Sheltered housing to receive six million pound investment BETTER conditions are set to be enjoyed by residents in a Felpham sheltered housing site.

Arun district councillor David Edwards told Felpham Parish Council last Tuesday he welcomed the improvements.

"THere is a £6m pot of money in order to be able to make our sheltered housing fit for purpose in what is now 2017 and not 1977.

"If any of you have been to Flax Mean in the not too distant past, you will understand exactly what I am saying.

"As a service engineer in the late 90s, I can remember going in there and servicing their equipment and revisiting there in 2015 with Nick Gibb

and the wallpaper was exactly the same. It was horrific.

"We have 28 people living in that particular block, with four showers to share between them. You wouldn’t go to a bed and breakfast and share a shower. THis will all change.

"THere are plans being drawn up to obviously make this a lot better. I can't confirm or deny if this will happen quickly but there are plans to make it happen. It's not just Flax Mean, there are other establishments as well that need lots of work to be done.

"THere is a £6m pot which has been agreed in order to make this happen.

So it's good news. It's just a question of making it happen now."

Care home work wins UK award

STAFF at a Bognor Regis care home have been named among the best in the country.

THe work they carry out at Elizabeth House has seen it awarded the Carehome.co.uk Award at Shaw Healthcare's annual awards ceremony.

Carehome.co.uk is a nationwide care home search website which allows relatives of the homes' residents to rate their accommodation on various criteria.

Elizabeth House, in Victoria Drive, received a 9.6 rating out of 10 to narrowly beat Wood House in Bristol to receive the top rating of all of Shaw Healthcare's facilities across the UK. Marian Drake, manager of Elizabeth House, said: "At Elizabeth House, we specialise in supporting elderly people living with dementia, enabling them to remain as independent as possible through activities and events in and away from the home.

"THis can be difficult, as each resident requires an individualised programme

of care based on their own needs, but it is something that our experienced staff are well versed in and provide every day.

"I'm delighted to see the home being recognised in this way."

Elizabeth House was recognised alongside other award winners as more than 200 people gathered at THe Chesford Grange Hotel in Warwickshire for Shaw Healthcare's awards ceremony. It aims to celebrate the achievements of staff members from among the 4,600 care workers across Shaw's 80 UK facilities.

Shaw Healthcare chief executive Jeremy Nixey said: "It's a night of celebrating the real difference that these incredible individuals make to the quality of care provided, whether in a small, everyday task or the overseeing of an entire home."

Protest about bungalows

` Drugs charges THREE people have been charged over alleged drug offences in Bognor Regis.

Police officers carried out a house search in Barton Road and discovered four people inside.

Ahmed Aden, 20, from Barnet in London, has been charged with being concerned in a supply of cocaine, concerned in a supply of heroin and obstructing an authorised person while they were carrying out their work.

A 17-year-old girl from Camden, London, has been charged with being concerned in the supply of cocaine, concerned in the supply of a class A drug and possession of a class B drug, cannabis.

Another 17-year-old girl from Camden has been charged with being concerned in a supply of cocaine, concerned in a supply of heroin, possession with intent to supply cocaine, possession with intent to supply heroin and obstructing an authorised person.

Aden has been remanded in custody and the two teenage girls have been bailed until they are all due to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on November 3.

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of the permitted use of a premises for the supply of class A drugs and has been released under investigation.

Park proposals go on show in town THe existing car park between Steyne Street and Queensway will be replaced with flexible parking spaces within 'soft landscaping' such as grassed areas, gravel and trees.

Two blocks of flats - one of eight floors and the other of six - will be built along the western side of the park, either with a new health centre or going around the existing building.

A shop is likely to be included on the ground floors of the new premises.

THere will also be the chance for outdoor play equipment and a potential water feature. THe linear park scheme is one of two key elements of the council's regeneration ideas for Bognor Regis.

THe major location is the Regis Centre, with a £50m winter gardens proposed, along with a larger Alexandra THeatre, hotel and seafront flats.

RESIDENTS are being given the chance to comment about plans to create a new park in Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council is staging the first public exhibition about its proposals for a linear park on the Hothamton site.

THe consultation is taking place from 11am-3pm today in the Alexandra THeatre in the Regis Centre.

Council officers and their consultants will be present to explain the £2.5m scheme and to answer questions.

Arun leader Cllr Gillian Brown, who is also the council's cabinet member for the economy, said: "THis will be an opportunity for us to engage with the community and gather people's thoughts and opinions on the scheme."

Initial plans for the tree-lined park of 3,000sq m were backed by councillors in the spring.

A PROTEST has been made about houses at the front of a new North Bersted estate.

Bersted parish councillors said they regretted the inclusion of a pair of houses at the entrance to the site off New Barn Lane.

Linden Homes South has put the twostorey properties in its detailed plans for which it is seeking permission from Arun District Council.

But the vice-chairman of the parish council's planning, amenities and environment committee, Cllr Gill Yeates, said the houses would 'blight' the existing properties on the opposite side of New Barn Lane.

"THis is the first opportunity we have had to comment on these houses. THere is a pair of bungalows opposite the entrance to the site," she said.

"THey will not only have the traffic from these 90 homes, and possibly another 50,

coming out in front of them. But they will now be overshadowed by these houses."

She said the proposal also contradicated the parish's neighbourhood plan, which was backed by residents.

Her comments led the parish council to formally tell Arun of its wish for bungalows but raise no formal objection to the plans.

Cllr Brian Knight, parish council chairman, said: "By objecting to this, we will be objecting to something which has been agreed between the developer and the district council.

"If we formally object to the plans, we will keep telling Arun the things we don't want, when we do want something, they will take no notice of us. THey will tend to ignore us."

THe proposals by Linden Homes feature 2-4 bed houses, 1-2 bed flats and 2-3 bed bungalows.

Options for Arundel A27 bypass have mixed reactions from public COMMUTERS and residents are divided about how to improve the A27 at Arundel.

Highways England is offering three choices to transform the key route by replacing the existing single-carriageway road with a new dual-carriageway.

Options for upgrading the road, valued between £135m and £260m, include two proposed new routes for the A27 to the south of the town and one proposal widening the A27 mostly along its existing route.

Each option would create a new dual-carriageway to join up the two existing sections of dual-carriageway either side of Arundel to reduce journey times, improve reliability and make the road safer. At a consultation display at Fontwell Park last week, Highways England project manager Sophie Hartfield said: "People are appreciating being given a choice of options and the information given highlights these.

"We have had some good feedback on the quality of information and the materials. THe Binsted group have provided evidence of where we may have inaccuracies which is really helpful. We will take this into consideration."

Liz Horkin, from Madehurst, looked at all the information online before

attending. She said: "I think we desperately need a solution which is fit for long-term and not just for the next few years. Public transport in this area is really poor and we just need a solution.

"Fiddling about with the current road is not future-proof enough. Options 3 and 5A are the better options. I feel that 5A has the least impact on the South Downs National Park. It also looks like they have thought through the junctions. It feels like the solution that will have the best long-term effects.

"THe roadworks that would be in place for Option 1 will take over three years.

THis will put increased traffic around it and cause a rat run up through the A29.

"Looking at the modelling on Option 1, the road will only last about 20 years which is just not enough.

"In all honesty, I don’t know what I would do if they chose Option 1. I would have to move."

All responses to the consultation - which closes on Monday - will be carefully considered before an announcement is made on a preferred route this winter. To this end, if a decision is reached, construction could start as early as 2021 and take around two years to complete.

are: Option 1 - A new dual-carriageway from Crossbush junction, passing to the south west of Arundel railway station, re-joining the existing A27 east of Ford Road, which will be widened to a dualcarriageway.

Option 3 - A new dual-carriageway from Crossbush junction, south of the current A27, rejoining the A27 at a new junction near Havenwood Park.

Option 5A - A new dual-carriageway following the same route as option 3 between Crossbush junction and Ford Road. From Ford Road, the route continues west passing through the South Downs National Park and Binsted Woods, re-joining the existing A27 at a new junction near Yapton Lane.

THey have told Highways England they believed it offered the quickest journey times and least disruption while it was being built. But they were concerned about its impact on the environment through Binsted Woods.

Committee vice-chairman Cllr Stephen Reynolds (C, Hotham) said: “Option One is just what is already there.

It would be chaos for about three years while the work goes on.

“THis issue has been around for a long time but the money is in place for the bypass now.

“Option 5A would cause the least disruption. We need to go for it, rather than try to make better what is already built.”

But Cllr Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) gave a dissenting opinion. “Option 5A would destroy a wood that is outstandingly beautiful,” he said.

“Option One might be a nightmare but it would save the destruction of the wood and I feel I have got to support that option.”

Funding for the scheme comes from the Department for Transport's £15 billion roads investment strategy aimed at improving journeys, cutting congestion and boosting the economy.

THe Arundel section of the A27 lacks road and junction capacity. As a result, it suffers from congestion, particularly junctions at Crossbush, THe Causeway and Ford Road.

Planned growth along the wider A27 corridor is likely to worsen the problem and at present there’s no proposal for public transport provision that would have a positive impact on traffic levels.

THis scheme aims to reduce congestion through Arundel by means of a new dual-carriageway bypass. THe bypass would link together the two existing dual-carriageway sections of the A27 either side of Arundel.

New protests about homes FLOODING fears led town councillors to maintain their objections to new homes on a Bognor Regis site.

THey said the latest plans for land behind 41-47 Pevensey Road were still unacceptable.

THe decision was made by Bognor Regis Town Council's planning and licensing committee with four neighbouring residents present.

THe committee agreed the scheme was an over-development of the land, there was an unacceptable risk of damage to the trees on the undeveloped site and the risk of flooding.

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said: “If the land is built upon, it’s going to push the water into all the neighbouring residents' gardens.

“In 2012, I remember Frith Road and Pevensey Road were flooded to about 12ins-18ins of water.

“THis has been going on for a long time, probably four years ago. It could even be eight years ago that I got involved with it.”

One of the neighbours present at last week's meeting, Bob Miller, said: “Any excess water that goes on that land just flows across it. It can’t be right that it is going to be built upon.”

He said he had lived within 100 yards of the development site since 1962. “THere have always been slowworms and newts there," he told councillors.

He also highlighted traffic issues which residents of the houses, if they were built, would face.

“THere are over 350 cars every single day using Pevensey Road and Frith Road because it’s on the school run.

“Former councillor and town mayor Sylvia Olliver counted them one day and she could not believe it," he said.

Residents also pointed out some trees on the land were subject to tree preservation orders.

THe current scheme is the second in two years - and the third in total - to be submitted to Arun District Council for it to make the final decision.

Arun Road resident Rebecca Lovett told Arun in writing: "THe issue on flooding for surrounding properties hasn't been addressed."

She stated the land drain at the back of her property and the planned houses was too small to cope with more surface water and was a few metres higher than the planned development land.

"THe new houses are still too close to the protected trees and, subsequently, they will need to be felled, which will have a very detrimental effect on the surrounding area," she wrote.

THe scheme has been proposed by John Parsons. His civil engineer, Robert Clark Associates Ltd, says in a statement the peak flood level in June, 2012, was 6.62m above high water.

"Since this flood event, Arun have carried out various repairs and improvements to the local land drainage system, clearing blockages and repairing partial collapses," it states.

"Notwithstanding the extreme nature of the June, 2012, event and the improvements that have been carried out subsequently, the area remains at risk of surface water flooding due to the local topography and it will be important to have due regard for this in the design of any new dwelling."

THis would see their floor level raised by some 600-800mm above existing ground levels to allow any flood water to flow underneath.

Speed humps proposal to slow drivers in Felpham MOTORISTS could face speed humps in one of Felpham's busiest roads.

West Sussex County Council has proposed installing the traffic-calming measures in a network of roads.

Highways experts at the council want to put in 18 humps as part of a villagewide road safety scheme.

In a statement, county director of law and assurance Tony Kershaw said: "Residents in the affected area of Felpham have been raising concerns over the speed of traffic for many years.

"THe roads in the area become busy with traffic accessing Downview Primary School during school pick-up/drop-off times and there is a local concern that the speed of traffic affects safety for children walking to school, as well as for residents accessing their properties.

"Developer highway improvement contributions from the developers at Site 6 are available for highway improvements in Felpham and it has been agreed to use this money to review the speed limits in the area.

"THis review has identified that trafficcalming would be beneficial in the affected roads to reduce traffic speeds, with the long-term aim of installing a 20 mph speed camera in the area.

"THe proposal to install traffic-calming is therefore made to avoid the likelihood of danger arising on the affected lengths of roads..."

Public consultation for the road traffic mitigation scheme for Downview Road shows it will receive seven traffic

measures at various intervals north of its junction with Felpham Way. THe other two roads which will be affected are Outerwyke Road, which will receive six humps, and Wroxham Way, with five more humps.

Felpham Parish Council members discussed the matter at their October meeting.

Cllr Paul English said: "I did ask and point out that the other roads should be involved in that discussion because

they are going to become rat runs or the possibility of a rat run."

Clerk to the council, Richard Wickens, replied: "THey are all included but they are calling it the Downview Road traffic mitigation scheme."

Cllr English responded: "Are they doing mail shots? Have we asked them that?

"If they haven't done this for the outer area then they've missed off a huge chunk in view of the rat run situation that could occur.

"Just a reminder that those two areas are part and parcel of it. " Cllr Graham Matthews said he would look in to the matter.

THe speed cushions will comprise pairs of humps located 0.9m to 1m apart depending on carriageway width, built of black macadam 65mm high, with on/off ramps to a gradient of 1:10.

Public consultation about the intended scheme ends on October 19.

` Beach defence plans submitted DETAILED proposals to protect Pagham and its wildlife from flooding have been revealed.

THe Pagham Flood Defence Trust has asked Arun District Council to approve its ideas to enable work to be carried out without disturbing the birds who nest on the spot.

THe need to ensure the little terns are unharmed by the essential work is among the conditions imposed

by Arun when it approved the trust's scheme to cut through the Church Norton Spit to relieve the tidal pressure on the eroding beach.

ABP mer, the trust's engineers, said a stakeholder management group would be set up to keep a watching brief on the £750,000 programme.

THis would include Arun, the Environment Agency, Natural England, the RSPB, Chichester District Council and the Marine Management Organisation.

Elena San Martin, an ABP mer senior consultant, says in a statement: "THe group should, as proposed, meet biannually over the first two years.

"THese group meetings will be a key element of the watching brief process. RSPB is also willing to assist the local community by providing an 'on the ground' overseeing role during the works in support of the watching brief."

THis would ensure workers were aware of the site's sensitivities to avoid disturbing overwintering and little tern breeding birds.

THe conditions set out by Arun limit the scheme to set times when the birds will be absent.

Seafront could host global arts activities A COASTAL container village could make Bognor Regis a global artistic hub, councillors have been told.

THe structures would be the base for the Season of Festivals proposed by Rox Music and Arts.

THey would be sited at Waterloo Square Gardens and turned into cultural centrepieces for arts, music and crafts from countries such as Italy, Mexico and South Korea.

In between, they would act as a focal point for music, country and Hallowe'en festivals.

Rox member Rob Cameron told Bognor Regis town councillors on Monday: "We want to try and develop something that will knock your socks off. THe response we have had so far and the fact it's a unique innovative project makes it exciting.

"Bognor Regis needs an innovative arts and entertainment project designed to generate new tourism and business. THis concept is designed to lift the general demeanour of the seafront and the town overall."

Rox used the example of containers which had proved popular destinations in a range of places as a template.

As reported, the project seeks to build on the regeneration momentum around the town by making use of the open space in Waterloo Square.

Mr Cameron also said Rox wanted to see THe Esplanade to be closed between Clarence Road and Lennox Street for eight weeks next summer.

For the Place St Maur, a container collection could be used to house retail/ arts/food destinations.

THe grass mounds on the seafront either side of the Place St Maur should be flattened to allow for a bigger space for community events, he said, with the fishermen's site to the east of the pier used for a container as well.

Waterloo Square should also be landscaped by Arun District Council to cut down the hedging and removing fencing, he said.

Steve Goodheart, a co-founder of Rox, said talks about backing for the festival were being held with the Arts Council and the Coast2Capital local enterprise partnership.

THe idea was to open up an underused section of open space by working alongside the bowlers whose greens dominated the seafront site.

"When you discuss the opportunities Rox has to offer, not just to residents but to visitors, it's a lot bigger than just bowling.

"THe southern section, to my knowledge, has not been used for bowling for well over a year. THe northern sector is well used all the time. But we see the southern section as a waste of an area.

"We don't see ourselves removing the bowlers from Waterloo Square at all but working alongside them," he said.

He envisaged the festival also using a triangular-shaped grassed area on Waterloo Square's southern end and the

weather station site if the town council's plans to move the equipment were finalised.

THe festival would require one major temporary structure, 20 minor temporary pods, one major temporary floor and two acres of grounds.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine), chairman of the council's events, promotion and leisure committee, said: "It is very exciting looking into what is possible and seeing positive feedback.

"But the council would like to see a lot more of what is possible."

He agreed the triangle of land was under-used and a precedent existed for entertainments to be here there.

"We used to have a marquee for the summer season. We had big events there which were undercover," he said.

Cllr Sandra Daniells (I, Pevensey) said: "THis is going to meet a lot of opposition from the bowlers. I don't think it's going to go down well. You could be using their bowling green for containers."

Disrict councillor Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said talks needed to be held with Arun because of its role as the landowner.

Rachel Searle, who organises Blakefest, said: "I love the idea of using that area of land more effectively for the community.

Landscaping could make it into a more user-friendly space.

"THere's a lot of movement to 'greenify' spaces and this is the perfect opportunity to do that."

Film festival's world interest FILM-MAKERS from the other side of the world hope to see their work triumph at a Bognor Regis event.

THe first ever South Coast Phoenix Film Festival opened for submissions this month and has already received multiple entries including one from as far away as Australia.

For PJ Saysell-Rosales, the founder of Phoenix Rising Media and the festival, pictured bottom right, this was very exciting.

He said: "It's amazing that people from other countries want to be a part of this."

THe 24-year-old Bognor Regis resident initially arranged the festival to encourage film-making in the town.

"My colleague Tom Flynn and I really

wanted to make this as much an event for Bognor Regis as it is for other filmmakers. THe town has so much to offer and we want to prove that," he said.

THe festival, which is set to take place at the Jeneses Arts Centre in Linden Road next July, will use the services of Bognor Regis-based companies including caterers, projectionists and printing firms.

PJ has arranged for festival attendees to get discounted rates at nearby hotels and B&Bs in order to involve the community as much as possible.

Categories for the festival, which is essentially a competition, include shorts, features and drone films. THere is also a mobile phone film category to give everyone the chance to get

PJ said: "We're looking to the future of film with these categories.

"Bognor Regis is an exciting place to be. THe new digital technology park at the university will be great.

` New cocktail bar DISCERNING drinkers could soon be enjoying a new Bognor Regis venue.

Shane Glasspool and Dean Sadler plan to open a cocktail bar in the town centre.

THey have applied to Arun District Council for a premises licence to supply alcohol from 2pm-11pm daily at their site at 65 High Street.

In a statement with their licensing application, they state: "We intend to operate as a boutique cocktail bar and, as such, will not attract the general pub community.

"We envisage that the older age group will be attracted to our venue, thus reducing the chance of incidents of crime and disorder occurring."

No more than 40 customers will be able to served at any time, they say, to also limit the prospect of public nuisances being caused.

"Signage will be displayed on the premises' exits, requesting customers leave quietly and respect neighbours," they state.

Bognor Regis town council members raised no objection to the licence at a meeting last week.

` New parish festival HOPES are high that Bersted's parish festival will return in 2018 after an absence of a year.

Bersted parish councillors are working to ensure the event can take place again next June at the Jubilee Playing Fields.

Cllr David Lainchbury, the council's finance and general purposes committee chairman, said at Tuesday's meeting: "I'm reasonably confident at the moment that the festival will go ahead. We will have more stalls than we have ever had before."

Museum display will be slice of the seaside f The latest town council drop-in session

First forum to be held in the town COMMUNITY forums are going on tour around Bognor Regis.

THe sessions have been held as part of Bognor Regis Town Council's community engagement and environment committee for the past few months. But its members have decided to make them standalone events away from the town hall to enable as many residents as possible to have their say.

THe first forum will take place from 1pm-2.30pm next THursday at the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street.

Sheila Hodgson, the council's projects officer, said: "Some of the comments from the community were that not everyone felt comfortable in a formal environment.

"THe forums will be held bi-monthly and be in different locations and at different times. THe difference between the forums and the surgeries held by councillors is that the forums will be more discussion-orientated.

THere will still be the chance to ask questions but also the opportunity to debate if required."

Since the community engagement role of the committee was established, forums have been held during an extended question time part of the formal agenda.

THe town council also stages regular drop-in sessions - the last is pictured above in the London Road precinct - and individual members also hold surgeries for residents to raise issues.

REMINDERS of the Bognor Regis seafront of the past could be put on display at the town's museum next year.

Donated parts of a seat which thousands of holidaymakers would have used to enjoy THe Promenade are set to be put together by the museum's volunteers.

THey will be joined by a section of the railings which once separated the pedestrian area from the beach and which was found by Bognor Regis Local History Society chairman Greg Burt next to a litter bin.

He said: "Hopefully, we will put the

seat and the piece of railing on display in a seaside room. We have got a lot of things which could go in it but we have to do work on the area first."

THe seat parts were given to the museum, in West Street, by a resident who had kept them in his back garden.

THey are described as being the cast iron ends and replacement wood for a seat and the back panels of an original Bognor Regis seafront seat from the 1940s-50s.

THe piece of railing is believed by Greg to pre-date the current railing which still survives along part of the promenade.

THe sole wooden bathing hut of the dozens which once lined the seafront is also available for the society to put on show in the planned room.

THe society held its latest book sale at the museum last Saturday.

About 12 bargain-hunters, pictured below left, went along in the first 30 minutes to search for good reads and help to raise some ÂŁ200 for the society.

THe museum will be hosting a find the ghost hunt for children aged 12 and under from 10am-4pm from October 24-29 ahead of its popular Christmas displays in late November.

Small vines are big value for these Burgundy wines Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

THIS WEEK I was lured by the current October offers at Majestic in Chichester principally enticed by the white burgundies on offer.

Burgundy as a region is the ancestral home of rich Chardonnays and delicate and subtle Pinot Noirs.

After consecutive tiny vintages, however, high demand is outstripping supply and prices are consequently high and thus these Majestic reductions are most timely.

My first Burgundian selection was that of a 2015 Bourgogne Domaine Jomain from a historical vineyard now run by siblings bordering the more prestigious Puligny-Montrachet commune.

THis wine at an offer price of £13.99 is classic-style Burgundy with buttery and white cream notes complemented with lemon and apple characters - a good Montrachet imitation at a fraction of the price and this 2015 vintage is the best ever and is clean and fresh on the palate!

My second Burgundian selection was that of a 2015 Louis Latour Pouilly - Vinzelles En Paradis and founded as far back as 1797 Maison Louis Latour is

synonymous with quality.

Already known to the Romans, Vinzelles derives its name from the Latin vincella which means small vine.

THe distinctive feature of the village of Vinzelles is the presence of two castles.

South-facing vineyards on predominantly limestone slopes and clay soil, the vineyards of PouillyVinzelles are exclusively planted with Chardonnay and resemble wines from neighbouring Pouilly-Fuissé.

Pale yellow in colour, a floral nose

and aromas of white flowers and fresh hazelnuts with white peach and brioche flavours, this fine wine is fresh, clean and elegant, perfectly balanced with good acidity and fine minerality on the finish - a good buy at the offer price of £19.99!

As ever, all prices presume the purchase of six bottles and a mix of wines is permitted. Moving further south in La Belle France, I next ventured to try a 2016 Vallée Des Pins Rosé Côteaux d'Aix en Provence and at an offer price

Method 1. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the sausages in a 20 x 30cm roasting tin with the oil, then bake for 15 mins until browned.

INGREDIENTS • 750g/1lb 10oz pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into chunks • 350g sweet shortcrust pastry • plain flour, for dusting • 140g caster sugar • ½ tsp salt • ½ tsp fresh nutmeg, grated • 1 tsp cinnamon • 2 eggs, beaten • 25g butter, melted • 175ml milk • 1 tbsp icing sugar

Method 1. Place the pumpkin in a large saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Cover with a lid and simmer for 15 mins or until tender. Drain pumpkin; let cool.

2. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use it to line a 22cm loose-bottomed tart tin. Chill for 15 mins. Line the pastry with baking parchment and baking beans, then bake for 15 mins. Remove the beans and paper, and cook for a further 10 mins until the base is pale golden and biscuity. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.

3. Increase oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7.

Community News & Views AN EVENING of murder, torture, poisoning, hallucinations and ‘trips’ was all on the menu for the Donington Gardening Club last Friday. Fortunately, we all survived to see another day!

Alan Martin returned once again to give us a spine-chilling illustrated talk entitled Plants and their Wicked Ways. Alan painted a vivid picture of both the damage done and the benefits of plants and their seeds.

THe benign side of plants furnishes us with food, spices, clothing etc., but the poisons produced by the roots, leaves and sap are mainly as a defence against the environment and animal and insect attacks.

In the past, it was trial and error as to what was safe to eat or use. Over one million people are poisoned now each year and 15,000 die, the greater number coming from the under-five age group. THere are, unfortunately, some very juicy and tempting coloured berries in our flower borders and also on bushes and trees in the countryside.

Even the pips of apple, pear, plum, peach, apricot and almond contain cyanide, and if consumed in great amounts, can be fatal.

Plants can have some very good qualities and, indeed, even a small amount of poison, such as digitalis, is used extensively in heart medicine.

Velcro was invented by George de Mestrel after returning home from a walk in the countryside. He discovered the seed capsules (burrs) of burdock clinging to his clothes with their hooks which enables them to be scattered by passing people and animals.

THe Fly Agaric fungus (or Death Cap), is found commonly in local Pine and Birch woodlands in Sussex. It is easily identified by its brilliant red colour liberally spotted with white warts. It contains three different poisons which attack both the liver and kidneys, but slugs can eat it with impunity and come to no harm!

Our next meeting will be at 7.30 pm, on Friday, November 2, when Helen Beal, a volunteer warden at Kingley Vale, will talk on The Horseshoe Vetch and the Chalkhill Blue Butterfly.

SUCCESSES in tackling anti-social behaviour have been discussed by Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb with Katy Bourne, the police and crime commissioner for Sussex.

Mr Gibb, pictured above with Mrs Bourne, said: "My concern has been the prevalence of anti-social behaviour, particularly in the centre of the towns.

"I was delighted that the police appointed an Arun street community outreach worker to work with those individuals with the most complex and entrenched problems and difficulties, helping those people back into their own homes and off the streets.

"THis has resulted in anti-social behaviour in the Arun district reducing from 156 incidents to just eight."

MORE than 50 entries provided a bumper display of produce at Bognor Regis and District Horticultural Society's latest autumn show.

THe event contained 16 classes and the occasion was a special evening as the society's members said farewell to their retiring judge, Peter Collett.

As Peter, pictured above with the society's chairman, Pat Alderton, told them when he arrived very smartly attired, "I wanted to go out in a blazer of glory."

Society press officer Janet Hogben said: "We will miss his kindly but knowledgeable judging."

A FREE event is on offer for Bognor Regis and Chichester businesses to get cyber savvy.

THe morning is being hosted

by West Sussex County Council with Sussex Police and Get Safe Online.

It follows increasing worries about cyber crime. THe event will take place from 8am-11am on October 25 at County Hall North in Horsham. THe cyber security experts present will include Lloyds Bank, Kaspersky Lab and City of London Police.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the county council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "I would encourage business owners to attend this very important event to help better protect our

bottom, won the Bognor Regis Town Council Award for best dahlia.

THe best pot plant was entered by Janet Hogben, who won the Eric Peck Memorial Plate.

Colin Peters is a gold medallist at the Trinity College of Music. He made his performing debut in a weekly series of broadcast piano recitals over a period of two years while he was fulfilling his National Service commitments in Egypt.

He studied with Vivian Langrish at the Royal Academy of Music and has worked in higher education and contributed to, and edited, a number of books.

He has also performed as a solo pianist and accompanist to principals from Glyndebourne and Kent Opera companies.

THe concert is at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road.

Sir Having seen the article by Steve Goodheart and the photo of Waterloo Square Bowls Green, pictured above, I wanted to write this 'open letter'.

Steve Goodheart has quoted 'an idea by Rox Music', (of which Steve Goodheart is a co-founder), 'is to create two unique schemes for 'the town' being Seasons of Festivals, and including Waterloo Square Gardens, THe Esplanade and THe Promenade.

THese events would be monthly, and the 'main area' would be Waterloo Square Gardens, with the prime site occupied by bowls players, a mini-golf course and the town's weather station.

As a councillor, and all of the media coverage thereon, he should also know that this is where the bandstand is proposed to be moved to.

I ask Steve Goodheart to send the Rox Music - Season of Festivals - details, to all of the bowls clubs that play on Waterloo Square, and that does not only mean 'the home bowls clubs', but all of the bowls clubs that come from within Arun, to play at Waterloo Square.

I believe that all of the said bowls clubs and their players will be 'up in arms' about these proposals, and I would be more than pleased to lead any idea, petition or protest against Steve Goodheart's proposal.

Also, yes, Waterloo Square bowls greens are owned by Arun, but are sub-contracted out to ISS, who have a contract to look after Waterloo Square Gardens for a number of years.

Ron helped to put Bognor Regis on the map Seafront entrepreneur was always willing to add new attractions ONE OF our most iconic seafront stands is that of Whittington’s started by Ron Whittington and his story is of an age of innocence, honesty and a total belief in ‘giving the public what they want'.

Ron Whittington was born in 1917 at Merston where his father was head gardener of a large estate. On leaving school, he worked in Felpham at a local garage. During the Second World War, he was to join up like most of his contempories.

In this case, this was the Fleet Air Arm, which he entered after having lied about his age. As he was able to drive, he was destined for the mechanical side of the service, and was given a broom to 'drive' as his first task.

Of course, he travelled and, for a time, Ron was to be stationed in Cannock Chase, where he met a young woman called Dorothy who became his wife and lifetime partner in 1944.

Eventually, their only child was born – Shirley, who eventually had two sons, Heath and Darrel – hence the business became known as Whittington and grandsons for many years.

First let us return to Ron, who arrived back at his North Bersted home in 1945 and, by 1946, Ron and his brother were spending their evenings helping Doug Arnold in his boatyard in North Bersted. Doug was at that time

running the pleasure boats along the seafront.

Eventually, Ron was offered a job that was to change his life and our seafront forever. While in the service, his ship was torpedoed, but he never learned to swim so it is interesting that he was to devote his life to the seaside.

Eventually, Doug Arnold sold the boatyard to another owner. However, around 1950, Ron was able to use his demob bounty to obtain a loan, to buy the yard, via a local bank, with whom he remained loyal, believing that this bank had believed in him at that stage and, therefore, he should stay with them.

THis to me seems to characterise the story of Ron Whittington, a loyal man who remained faithful to his ideals. His vision of the future was quite interesting, because after the war, people did not have the money for holidays abroad.

It took time for them to start to enjoy themselves and for many these started with the day-trip to the seaside.

His ideals were to pay off as he had a good eye for new projects. If something needed doing Ron was there to help, work or earn money. He was demobbed as a Petty Officer from Yeovil in Somerset so that when he heard the air station in Yeovil had three planes named Faith, Hope and Charity to be repaired he was there to offer to carry out the job.

His first main foray into seaside entertainment was to be with the expansion of his boats. He was eventually to operate a number of sites including one near the fishermen, a second opposite the Kursaal and another at the foot of Gloucester Road.

For a number of years, he also operated the speedboat from the end of the pier. Ron’s boat was used in the film, Punch and Judy Man, starring Tony Hancock, another example of Ron’s ‘eye to any business opportunity'.

I am sure that his method of boarding the boats off the beach would today have given health and safety regulators a heart attack. To climb into one of the boats you had to walk along a plank, which took you across two lengths of fixed wheel staging. THis enabled you to climb into the half-track vehicles, which would then carry you the final distance to the landing stage.

Ron’s empire by now had expanded into two motorboats, namely the Sea Hawk and the Bounty, which held 60 and 12 passengers respectively. In addition, he had three speedboats, which were named, Zip, Miss Magic and Miss Bognor Regis. It is interesting to surmise the attraction of this type of entertainment if it were to be re-introduced today.

For many years, the deck chairs on the seafront were owned and organised by Bognor Regis Urban District Council but they later decided to sell the concession with 2,500 chairs which Ron obtained. At this time, he also had the concession for chairs in Hotham Park.

He then embarked on more concessions including ice creams. Next, came the children’s rides, trampolines next to the

fishermen huts and he also had the bouncy castle, which proclaimed King Ron’s Bouncy Castle alongside rides and a small boating pool.

Another innovation was that of the train along the seafront, while he also had the train, which operated within the Butlin complex, taking guests to their chalets. Other opportunities occurred with which Ron was able to involve himself, that of the car park on the site of the Southdown bus depot.

THe boats continued and provided a regular trip to Littlehampton on Tuesdays. When someone was required to repair the Princess Margaret pool in the shape of England (now the Hothamton car park), Ron volunteered.

When a film was made in the town he offered to store the equipment required within the bus station. He was able to make and provide the Billy Bulb mascot for the illuminations fund, as he was to become a whizz using fibreglass.

When you listen to the story of Ron Whittington, it is easy to become tired listening to all he did. THen, just when you think that is the end of the story, you find that he was also a master mason, a school governor and, for a number of years, represented residents on Bersted Parish Council in addition to Arun District Council.

I can imagine how he was viewed when he would turn up for meetings in his van, with his overalls and distinctive hat. I understand that on numerous occasions he was actually refused entrance to the council car park – I expect he enjoyed that struggle.

Sadly, Ron died in 1989, leaving his wife and daughter and, of course, his grandsons, of whom he was evidently proud.

Kia reveals pricing and specification for All-New Stonic Cuv Kia has released first details of the specification and pricing for the all-new Stonic, the company's first offering in Europe's booming small CUV/SUV market.

Stonic will go on sale on October 23, 2017, order books are open now.

THere will be five versions at launch, based on two trim grades (‘2’ and ‘First Edition’) and three powertrains. THe Stonic will be available with a 98bhp 1.4-litre multi-point injection petrol engine, a 118bhp 1.0-litre T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) unit and a 108bhp 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel.

All models have a six-speed manual gearbox and feature ISG, Kia's intelligent engine stop/ start system to prevent fuel being wasted and CO2 from being pumped into the air when the car is stationary in traffic.

Pricing will start at £16,295 for the 1.4-litre petrol grade ‘2’, rising to £20,495 for the ‘First Edition’ 1.6 CRDi diesel.

Buyers are moving into small CUV/SUVs from superminis, small MPVs and threedoor compact hatchbacks, which are now completely out of favour. Stonic, like the larger Sportage, which has been a phenomenal success, will attract customers from other brands and not expected to cannibalise sales from existing Kia models.

All Stonic models will be front-wheel drive as the take-up for all-wheel drive in this sector of the market is only 8 per cent.

THe grade ‘2’ Stonic will be available with all three engines, while First Edition is being

offered with the efficient 1.0-litre T-GDi and 1.6-litre CRDi units.

All versions are generously equipped, with an extensive range of active safety features and up-to-the-minute connectivity in ‘First Edition’ versions. ‘First Edition’ models also have two-tone paintwork, with the roof, wing mirror casings and rear spoiler picked out in either black, lime green, red or orange, depending on the choice of main body colour, with corresponding accents around the lower centre console and display screen areas.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) are standard. VSM is linked to Torque Vectoring, Straight Line Stability and Cornering Brake Control. All versions also have Hill-start Assist to prevent the car from rolling backwards when setting off on steep inclines.

Autonomous Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning System are standard in the ‘First Edition’ and optional on grade ‘2’.

Autonomous Emergency Braking is linked to Driver Attention Warning, which can alert a drowsy or distracted driver that it is time to take a break, and High Beam Assist, which automatically switches the car between dipped and full beam according to the traffic around it and the local street lighting.

THe ‘First Edition’ also has Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, to prevent the car from being driven into the path of a vehicle approaching from an angle out of the driver's eyesight.

Bognor enjoy a well-earned week PostSport off after thumping Fordingbridge BOGNOR RFC head into a well-earned week off on a high after a convincing bonus point victory over one of their closest challengers.

THe Green and Purples have started the Hampshire One season well, winning three of their first five matches.

THe latest was a 43-7 victory over fourthplace Fordingbridge which consolidates third position ahead of a bye-week for the cup.

THings did not start all that well for the Hampshire Avenue side with the visitors crossing the line for a try straight from the kickoff. THankfully for Bognor, from that point on it was all one-way traffic - and it was captain Shane Stevens who set the ball rolling, crossing for a try after mistakes from two Fordingbridge players.

It was the skipper again who triggered the move that took Bognor into the lead, the lanky winger showing some excellent footwork before dotting down. THe conversion was good to make it 12-7.

THe Green and Purples' forwards then started to have an impact with James Barlow and THomas James showing some powerful rucking before prop Chris Webb went over for his first score of the season.

Full back Pat Gibbs then got in on the action scoring a quick brace - the second of which saw him step his opposite number from a standing start and beat him for pace before beating two further defenders before crossing the line.

Bognor's sixth came after some great work from their big men.

Webb ran the ball 40 metres before being stopped by two defenders. THen flanker Darren Bidwell carried hard from a driving maul and scored in the corner to the delight of the Bognor crowd. With fly half David Sweeney adding his fourth conversion, the score was extended to 38-7. But there was still time for the home side's subs to have an impact.

After being reduced to 14, with Tom James sent to the bin for a high tackle, Bognor defended magnificently and turned the ball over. Flanker Nathan Archer found himself in the clear and free to score his maiden try of the season to seal an impressive win for the green and purples.

Lock James Barlow summed up the match in a few words: “It was a good win for Bognor.�

With this weekend off, Bognor return to action on October 21 with a trip to Ellingham & Ringwood.

CHICHESTER RFC bosses believe the best is yet to come for the Blues - despite winning five out of six to kick-start their campaign.

Scott Ashley's side sit third in Division One South, level on points with CS Rugby in second and four behind leaders Medway.

After suffering a shock home defeat to Cobham a fortnight ago, the Blues returned to form last weekend with a bonus point victory over Gravesend. Next up is a visit from THurrock tomorrow (3pm), who come to Oaklands Park having won just once all term.

Speaking after the 40-21 win over THurrock, Paul Colley, Chi's director of rugby, said: "THere were real glimpses today of what we are capable of and given the amount of changes this was a very decent team performance, but there are still some areas Scott will want to look at. We are not getting carried away and we will need to improve as the season progresses."

Chi made the trip to the Kentish bank of the THames with a depleted squad, meaning 11

of the 18 were in the second XV only a month previous. But the Blues made a fast start, Aaron Davies hitting a great line off Henry Anscombe to breach the Gs' defence for a 0-7 scoreline. Number 8 Chris Johnson made it two moments later, crashing over from an attacking scrum, 0-14.

Despite the home side getting a score of their own, Chi then took charge scoring three quick tries to put the game out of sight before the break.

First, open side Charlie Wallace touched down after a powerful driving maul, then winger Nat Jackson ran round the defence before Jack Hamilton-Fox, coming off, broke superbly through the middle, and from quick ball, full back Tom Hutchin entered the line superbly to give the Blues a 7-33 lead. THe Gs did get another score but the break came with Chi 14-33 to the good. THe second period saw the visiting Blues tighten up but they managed to add another seven-pointer through Toby Golds and denying the Gs a bonus point.

Each league of 16 players is littered with Sussex county players, ranging from seniors, ladies, mens and juniors. All the competitions are free to enter to give everyone a chance to compete at national level and beyond.

Lions urged to roar into life as up and down season rolls on

Chi go on as Brent leaves CHICHESTER City seem determined to push on to success despite long-standing chairman Brent Williams stepping down.

All at Oaklands Park were left shocked by the sudden announcement last week that the supremo was to leave three years after joining the club.

But the lack of a chairman has not halted progress on the pitch, with Chi sitting third in the SCFL Premier after notching up four points from six in their past two matches.

Next up is a trip to mid-table Newhaven tomorrow (3pm), a side that are unbeaten in three and can beat the best teams in the division on their day.

THe match between the top two scorers in the division is likely to feature goals. But, even with sharpshooter Scott Jones in their ranks, Chi had to settle for a point against Horsham YMCA last weekend.

THe game against one of the pre-season title contenders was THe Lillywhites' first home match in more than a month.

Perhaps it was that unfamiliarity that led to Chi being slow out of the blocks, falling behind in just the second minute.

It took them 20 minutes to

get going, with striker Dave Herbet netting after good work from tricky Italian Lorenzo Dolcetti.

Chances came and went for City to win the match and pick up all three points. But even Jones, who netted 12 times last month, could not find the winner.

Chi did find their stride on Tuesday evening against Loxwood, strikes from Jones, Dan Hegarty, Josh Clack and Herbert sealing a 4-2 win.

It was goals of a different kind that outgoing Williams brought to Oaklands Park.

THe former head honcho at Pagham took over at the club in 2014 and restructured the club from top to bottom.

He brought in Rutherford to manage the team in October, 2015, and since then Chi have been climbing up the table, as well as equalling their best ever performance in the FA Vase.

A statement on the club's website said: "Brent has been a servant to Chichester City for many years and his dedication and personality will be missed behind the scenes."

An announcement on his successor is expected in the coming weeks.

PAGHAM'S young Lions continue to frustrate with back-to-back victories once again the goal laid down by joint managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds.

THe Nyetimber Lane side have been inconsistent all term, winning five and losing five of their matches in the SCFL Premier so far leaving them ninth in the 22-team division.

THat rollercoaster form rolled on this past week, with an excellent last-minute victory over Broadbridge Heath followed by a midweek loss to Lancing at home.

With third bottom AFC Uckfield Town visiting Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm), the management duo will be hoping their young charges can notch up a much-needed win to push them up the table.

THen, the Lions will continue their defence of the Peter Bentley Cup on Tuesday visiting Crawley Down Gatwick in the third round (7.30pm).

THey will be looking to the older more experienced members of the squad for leadership, particularly striker Scott Murfin, whose 90th minute strike at Broadbridge Heath earned Pagham a crucial away win.

Sids shooting for seniors return Ne

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce believes his side are ready to overcome promotion disappointment to make the step-up into senior football this term.

THe Green and Golds were denied entering the SCFL Division One because of an administration error at county level in preseason.

But, despite getting everything in place at the Recreation Ground for life at a higher level, Pearce says focus now is firmly on the pitch and ensuring his side do enough to ensure they are not still playing intermediate

football in 12 months time.

Central to that is bringing through a cohort of young players, a large number of whom will be in the squad ahead of the Sussex Intermediate Cup second round match at Cowfold tomorrow (1.30pm).

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "If we had gone up last term we would have been ready.

THat's the main aim this year.

"We were disappointed with the way it went when we did all the hard work on and off the pitch yet were told no when certain bits of paperwork didn't get filled out.

"But we have brought in an under-8s, an under-12s and under-18s as well as getting the reserves back into the county league.

"THat's the future of the club and that's why I'm already bringing them through into the first team.

"I've had at least half a dozen or eight who have done that this season so we're going the right way."

THe Sids' unbeaten league start to the SCFL Division Two season continued last weekend when goals from Dan Bassil and Matthew Roberts sealed a 2-0 win away at Ferring.

THose three points lifted them into third, just a victory behind league leaders Roffey.

Elsewhere, SCFL Division One side Selsey continue to slide after slumping to their fourth defeat in five. THe Blues were beaten 3-1 on the road at Mile Oak, an own goal the only solace in a poor performance.

Next up is a home match against Langney Wanderers tomorrow (3pm) with manager Steve Bailey wanting a win to push his fifthplaced side up the division.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham boss Gary Lines will be hoping a switch to cup action will kickstart his side's season. Last season's champions head to Forest Row in the second round of the Intermediate Cup (1.30pm).

THe Robins do so sitting sixth in the league after suffering a 2-1 reverse at Jarvis Brook last weekend. An own goal failed to save Bosham as the home side scored a late winner.

Depleted City aim to topple Addicks CHICHESTER City Ladies may be battered and bruised - but Matt Wright's side will be out to show table-topping Charlton they are still up for a battle when they travel to south London this weekend.

Chi head to the league leaders off the back of two pulsating local derbies, first with Lewes, and then Portsmouth, in FA Women's Premier League South.

But the desire to keep on fighting has cost the Oaklands Park side dear, with a number of key players left on the treatment table.

Among them is Charley Wilson-Blakely, who scored a brace in the 2-2 draw with Lewes last weekend before being taken off with an ankle injury.

After playing Portsmouth at home last night,

Chi now head to face the Addicks who have won eight out of nine this term.

THey do so without fear, after coming back from second-placed Lewes with a welldeserved point which could have been more if they had taken their chances.

In a incident-packed first half, Wright's side took the lead when Wilson-Blakely responded quickest after Jenna Fowl's shot rebounded back off the bar.

Minutes later she added a second, stealing in after Jess Lewry's shot was saved. But a quickfire double from the hosts saw Lewes go in to the break level pegging.

Despite having chances to win, Chi could not find the winner and the draw left them in sixth ahead of last night's match with Pompey.

Rocks aim to repeat cup form to get them back in first round Next Game

OXFORD CITY (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR have FA Cup stars in their eyes almost...

THe Rocks head to Oxford City tomorrow in the fourth preliminary round of the world's oldest competition knowing that a victory will bring great rewards.

THe prize money of £12,500 would go a long way to supporting the club's overall development, as would the additional income of a potential plum tie against Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers or Coventry City.

But, selfishly, the majority of players and staff know that a victory would give them a first taste of FA Cup first round action.

First though, they have to win against an Oxford City side who sit just below them in National League South.

A return to the cup will be a welcome relief for the Rocks who are fourth bottom and have not won in the league for nine games, stretching back to the middle of August.

THat poor run continued last weekend when a spirited Bognor side came out second best against a strong Dartford team.

After falling behind early on, a mazy run and strong finish from left back Kristian Campbell saw the Rocks level.

But in the second period, Dartford's hold on the match strengthened. Just after the re-start, Calvin Davies was deemed to have lifted his foot too high in the box.

THe home side scored the penalty, then netted again on the hour mark to secure a 3-1 win.

Missing from that match were Doug Tuck, Sami El-Abd and James Crane.

With Campbell also set to miss out on the trip to Oxford's Marsh Lane ground tomorrow (3pm), the Rocks' thin squad is set to be stretched.

If there is a silver lining then it is that Bognor have saved their best performances of the season for the FA Cup. In the second qualifying round, a late Crane header saw them past league rivals Westonsuper-Mare.

THen two Ollie Pearce strikes secure a 2-0 victory over Eastbourne Borough in the last round.

While many of the players have not been here before, they also have the experience of manager Jack Pearce to lean on.

He was at the helm for the Rocks' memorable cup runs in the 1980s.

Pearce was also in the dugout the last time the Rocks won through to the first round proper of the competition more than 20 years ago THe prize that day was a trip to Ashford Town.

But beat Oxford City tomorrow and potential opponents could be far more glamorous.

On-loan Kris out of cup clash THE ROCKS head to the city of dreaming spires tomorrow dreaming of FA Cup glory.

But Jack Pearce's side do so without one of their chief flyers, namely Kristian Campbell.

THe 21-year-old has been one of the standout performers in recent weeks after arriving on a month's loan from National League side Bromley.

THat was further underlined when Campbell got on the scoresheet during the 3-1 defeat at Dartford last weekend, finishing well after a mazy run. But any hopes of the 21-year-old taking that form into the cup look to have been ruled out by his parent club who do not want the promising defender to be cup-tied.

With skipper Sami El-Abd and James Crane also out, Pearce will have to use all of his management experience to solve a defensive dilemma. If he succeeds then it will be a massive boost to a Bognor team that are hovering just above the National South drop zone. THe £12,500 pay cheque for winning through will be welcomed, as will the prospect of a plum tie against league opposition.

But, before Rocks fans can start dreaming, the players must get things right on the pitch.

Tickets for tomorrow's match are £12 adults, £6 OAPs and students and £3 under-16s.

AH THE joys of the FA Cup - it really is the world's oldest and finest knockout competition, even when the team you follow is a long way from Wembley.

Travelling to Eastbourne Borough on the coach ahead of our match in the last round I just had a good feeling that something would go our way that day.

It turned out just right! Ollie Pearce stepped up again on 12 minutes to net the opener.

He added to his tally on 49 minutes as well which boosted the morale after some dropped points in the league the previous weekend.

I have to say we defended superbly and we worked as a unit and I would go as far as to say that in that second half we held our own against the attacking threat from the Sports. In the end we were worthy of our next round spot.

THe main question is why we can’t seem to get it done against the same teams in the league?

THe lads showed they could get a clean sheet and win at Priory Lane.

I was one of the 38 that turned out on the Rocks on Tour coach to Dartford this past weekend.

Everyone was in agreement on the trip up that a draw would be a fantastic result. THe set-up is impressive at Princes Park, even boasting a tree sculpture under one stand!

Alfie Pavey scored the opener after only seven minutes which meant we had to get back into the game. Kristian Campbell’s impressive run ended with a fine goal to draw us level (I really hope we can extend his loan deal from Bromley).

I felt we held our own until half time where we matched them and defended well, though an early second half penalty was tucked away confidently by Eliot Bradbrook which gave the Darts the lead and then Andy Pugh headed the third into the net on the back post later on to finish it.

It might have gone differently

if we hadn’t conceded that penalty when we did, but that’s football.

I have a habit of saying this this season about other teams, but it appears that most of the clubs we have played are top ten contenders.

Dartford will certainly be pushing for the play-offs at least this year. We’ll get our own back at the Lane later on this season!

THere has been a lot of discussion on the unofficial message board about Alex Parsons on dual registration with Worthing of late.

He’s already scored a couple of goals with that team while they share Bognor’s hallowed Nyewood Lane before their 3G pitch gets sorted.

THe Rebels have struggled, though, and still can’t buy a win.

Alex will be back in the green and white sooner rather than later and I hope he bags a couple of goals for us tomorrow in the FA Cup! THe reason he’s at Worthing is to get some much needed game time.

Oxford City are just below us in the league and will provide a measuring stick for where we will end up come the end of the season.

But it's the FA Cup and we want to make that first round proper again. £12,500 is also up for grabs, so I am sure the lads will be pumped up for this.

THe supporters' club have organised a coach and are taking more names for a second coach to cheer on the Green Army tomorrow.

I wouldn’t want to miss this one. Join us and maybe the lads will be spurred on to more cup glory.

If you witnessed the FA Trophy run not too long ago then you will know what I mean! Why not? We deserve it and it's been well overdue.
