Ian's swim is a charity success CHILDREN with sight problems have been given a boost of more than £2,500 by a Pagham man.

A cheque presentation has seen Moorfields Eye Hospital in London receive the latest donation from Ian Turner.

The money was raised when Ian staged a swim off Pagham in spite of being unable to use his legs as a result of being affected by polio when he was a boy.

He undertook his courageous effort to the sunken remains of a Mulberry harbour from the Second World War, motivated by the experiences of his grandson, Sidney Turner, who is a patient at the hospital.

Seven-year-old Sidney presented the cheque for £2,500 to the eye hospital at a ceremony at Pagham Yacht Club last Friday as Ian watched on proudly.

The amount will be boosted when the hospital claims Gift Aid on the eligible donations.

Ian, 69, of St Thomas Drive, said: "I am absolutely amazed by the amount that people have donated.

"I am really humbled. It's all about the bravery of those children I have seen at the hospital when I have gone with Sidney who either have sight problems or no eyesight at all.

"That's why I wanted to stay in the background at the presentation but I have been very pleased that people have responded in the way they did.

"The businesses in the area all helped me as well. They have been fantastic in the way they have raised money."

Ian was due to follow the presentation by

having an operation at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham on his right leg.

It was one evening in the middle of last month Ian took the plunge and aimed for the wreck just under a mile offshore using only his arms.

The swell and increasing wind at high tide meant Ian had to battle against the elements to reach his goal.

But, accompanied by members of the yacht club and a safety boat, he was safely able to reach the wreck, spurred on by helping the children at the hospital.

Sidney has Nance Horan Syndrome. This causes severe sight problems and needs ongoing treatment.

The swim was the second fundraising event which Ian staged in aid of the hospital. Last autumn saw him wheel himself four miles from Pagham to Bognor Regis to raise £2,400.

He said: "It can be difficult to raise money for charity because you feel as if you are tapping the same people for money all the time.

"But the money I received for the swim ranged from a £200 cheque from a person who lives 300 miles away to a boy who sent me his £5 pocket money."

Ian is a former police office who left the force in 1997. He bought a sheep farm in South Wales and became a shepherd for a few years.

But the long-term effects of polio forced him to retire and move to Pagham. His legs are in callipers and his latest operation is one of several he has faced in the past ten years.

Successful retailer has put in plans for bigger town store DISCOUNT retailer Lidl wants to expand its presence in Bognor Regis.

The company is looking to increase the size of its store by almost 50 per cent.

The firm wants to move to the opposite side of Shripney Road from its current location on the Bognor Regis Retail Park (Peel Centre) to Oldlands Farm, next to the new northern relief road.

Proposals for the new outlet have been sent to Arun District Council by Hanbury (BM) Ltd, which has approval to develop the site.

But the company wants to change one of the conditions of its permission which restricts the goods which can be

sold at the new development.

Jemma Shorrock, an associate town planner at Hanbury's planning agent, Rapleys, said in a statement: "Due to operational restrictions relating to the size of the existing store and its inability to extend due to its location within an existing retail park, Lidl seek to relocate its store in close proximity to the existing store at Oldlands Farm to retain its market share in Bognor Regis."

The new store would have a net sales area of 1,059.2sq m compared with the existing store's 742.6sq m.

Annual turnover is expected to be £6.66m-£8.22m.

Big festive plans for cancer free Jaxson

f Jaxson with parents Emily Smith and Owen Scrivens CANCER survivor 20-month-old Jaxson Scrivens from Bognor Regis can finally celebrate Christmas and his birthday properly for the first time.

The young boy was declared cancerfree last month after six courses of chemotherapy and will get the chance to enjoy the festive season with his family.

When Jaxson was diagnosed with retinoblastoma in late December last year, life was put on hold for him and parents, Emily Smith and Owen Scrivens, of The Steyne in Bognor Regis.

Care worker Emily, 21, said: "Last year we had a very quiet Christmas on our own as all our efforts were put into Jaxson's recovery.

"But this year everyone's going to come to us for Christmas.

"It's going to be a great day as well as his birthday in January."

Twenty-year-old Owen, a paramedical science student, agreed: "We've still got the party decorations that weren't used for his first birthday earlier this year.

"We can bring them out this time

around."

Jaxson's tumour behind his right eye was discovered after Emily and Owen noticed a white reflex in photographs. However, doctors told them that if it had been left any later he would have lost the eye.

Luckily, he received his first course of chemotherapy almost immediately.

Emily said: "It's crazy to think he had his first chemotherapy session before he was even one year old.

"I think sometimes that I couldn't do what Jaxson has done. Children are so resilient."

Despite his difficult journey to recovery which saw him suffer multiple infections and an allergy to one of the chemotherapy drugs, Jaxson has not let that slow him down.

Owen explained how his son has grown since last December.

"When Jaxson started chemotherapy he couldn't walk or talk, now he can do both," he said.

During treatment, the Royal London Hospital kept a scrapbook detailing

Jaxson's progress, pictured above right.

The scrapbook also contains images of the tumour. Owen said: "We could see the tumour flaking away bit by bit."

Emily will use it when Jaxson is older to explain what happened to him.

She said: "It's so nice. One day we will be able to show him his amazing recovery."

Although Jaxson still receives regular check-ups in hospital to monitor his eye, his family are focusing on enjoying their life together.

They have moved into their own flat since the diagnosis. Jaxson has started a new nursery and Owen was accepted on to his university course. With Jaxson's good news they can fully embrace their fresh start.

Owen said: "It feels like life is finally moving forwards. For a long time we felt like we were on pause, and now it's like waking up from a dream."

Emily said: "When you're in that situation it doesn't feel like it will ever end but now we can look to the future together."

Chance to view regeneration plans - see page 7

ARTS and crafts and music from around the world will form the centrepiece of a planned year-long festival in Bognor Regis.

The outline proposals for the Season of Festivals was revealed on Wednesday.

It has been put together by Rox Music and Arts to create a unique scheme for the town on two of its most important sites - Waterloo Square Gardens and The Esplanade and Promenade.

Rox co-founder Steve Goodheart said: "With the right ingredients for a creative partnership starting to germinate and the uptown in the economic climate for smaller towns and cities starting to kick in nationwide, there is an opportunity ahead that Bognor Regis should seize with both hands.

"Bognor Regis needs and innovative arts and entertainment project designed to generate new tourism and business - a project that could result in the unique and potentially leading to international recognition.

"Looking across Britain and the continent, we see the increasing use of arts, innovation and entertainment as an important magnet to attract tourists, business and to ensure the arts communities flock here.

"We feel the time is right for an exciting development to start next year, before any regeneration work begins in Bognor Regis."

The initial proposals were discussed with Arun District Council officers yesterday. They will be presented to Bognor Regis Town Council next Monday. The objective is to enable

Bognor Regis to achieve international recognition which will encourage corporate events and boost tourism and business opportunities.

The Season of Festivals would see Easter and spring events each March on the two sites followed by a Mexican festival in April.

A summer event would come next in May, with South Korea the focus of a festival in June. It would be the turn of a music festival in July and Italy the following month.

September would see a country fair and Hallowe'en in October.

The activities would end with Guy Fawkes in November and Christmas events in December.

The attractions would be staged in one major temporary structure, 20 minor temporay pods, a major temporary floor and two acres of ground.

Rox says Waterloo Square Gardens and The Esplanade and Promenade are ideal sites to put the creativity into action. The main area would be Waterloo Square Gardens, with the prime site occupied by bowls players, a mini-golf course and the town's weather station.

A landscaped environment could be created in its place in the middle of which would be an iconic structure, possibly temporary.

This would be joined to the seafront by banning traffic from the road directly outside the pier to create a walking route to the seafront and an area for several smaller pods.

All the sites are owned by Arun.

` Traffic congestion CHANGING two junctions on the A27 will fail to stop traffic problems being caused by thousands of new homes in Pagham, it is claimed.

Parish councillor Phil Higson said the latest proposals – put forward at the last minute at last week’s examination in public into Arun District Council’s draft local plan – were unsatisfactory.

The junctions are the roundabouts at Whyke Road and Bognor Road.

But Cllr Higson said: “You are taking away the ability to tackle the end-to-end solutions. These two junctions are heavily congested.

“The works may solve the congestion there but the rest of the A27 will have to cope with the extra traffic on top of the existing number of vehicles.”

Cllr Higson was one of five parish councillors as well as residents June and Colin Hamilton and the parish council’s environment consultant, Petra Billings, who spoke out at the public inquiry.

Ranged against them were the three developers of the Pagham sites set aside in the land use blueprint for 1,200 homes.

Another councillor who spoke, David Huntley, said: “The local plan is marvellous for Arun because it helps them meet their housing target, they receive the new homes bonus plus section 106 money for new infrastructure and the community improvement levy.

“The landowners are happy and the developers are happy. However, this means parishes like Pagham are being used as building grounds so that Arun can reach their target but nobody here wants the houses.”

Housing 'has to be reduced' TOO MANY homes are planned to be crammed into the Pagham area, councillors and residents have claimed.

The thousands of properties intended to be built before 2031 would overload their neighbourhoods, they said.

Pagham resident Colin Hamilton told the examination in public into Arun District Council's draft local plan: “Of all the planned housing, 35 per cent is intended for the far left-hand corner of the Arun district. I find that situation simply incredible.

“The roads are disastrous today and nothing in any paperwork I see is going to improve it. And it will not improve at all until the A27 at Chichester problem has been sorted out.”

Pagham Parish Council chairman Ray Radmall told the examination: “We, as a parish, do not feel that an allocation of approximately 35 per cent (of the proportion of dwellings planned for greater Bognor Regis) can be considered justified or reasonable.

“The amount of housing proposed in Pagham would dramatically change the balance as it would almost double in size and the type of housing proposed would deviate from the existing high proportion of bungalows.”

Bersted parish councillor Martin Lury said at the hearing last week: “The area of greater Bognor Regis does not just cover Bersted and Pagham. It extends all the way up to Barnham/Eastergate/Westergate.

"When you put all these developments together, the infrastructure problems that

will be caused by them will be huge. It is so disruptive in an area where we are lacking in infrastructure.

“We are the part of the district furthest away from the A27 and nowhere near the A27 at Arundel if that is to be improved and we are not close to the A27 at Chichester – and that is all up in the air.

“There is no way west of Bersted (Chalcraft Lane) can cope with the number of houses planned – 2,500 – which could possibly mean 5,000 more cars. It can already take an hour to get from Bersted to Chichester and that development will mean the end of the strategic gap between the areas. It will be the creation of ‘Bogchester’.”

In Pagham, three sites – Sefter Road, Hook Lane and Summer Lane – have been put forward by Arun District Council as suitable for 1,200 homes. Another 2,500 are envisaged for Chalcraft Lane and a further 3,000 for the Barnham area.

Owen Jones, for developer Hallam Land Management, said: “There have been lots of examinations to say why this scale of development is appropriate.”

Pauline Roberts, for Chalcraft Lane landowner, the Church Commissioners, said: “We are confident that at least 2,500 dwellings is appropriate. We very much welcome the ‘at least’ to provide flexibility for the future.”

The examination at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton led by planning inspector Mark Dakeyne ended last Friday after eight days. His report is expected early in 2018.

It will be debated by councillors before the local plan takes effect.

Bognor Regis Civic Society said the plan lacked information about the likely future emergence of ground and surface water flooding.

It claimed this was because nobody knew when, where and how much flooding would occur at times of exceptional rainfall. Extra development could only make this worse and this made it foolish to plan large-scale developments which could put existing homes and businesses at risk, it stated.

He said: “I attend the awards every year and approached the representative at Rolls Royce and asked them if we could come along for a visit.

“As for the Royal Oak, this used to be my local. I know the landlady, Jan and husband John well. We used to go the horse racing at Goodwood and Fontwell. I just had to come here for lunch, it was my first port of call.”

The pensioners enjoyed a variation of meals from classics such as liver and bacon, egg and chips to Thai red chicken curry and steak.

Landlady Jan said: “We were totally honoured to have the Chelsea Pensioners here.

It was lovely that we were approached and they came in to visit. We looked after them well and we hope they had a lovely day at the Rolls Royce plant.”

Discussions could hold key to new future for town hotel

TALKS are planned this month to bring a former Bognor Regis hotel back to life.

The discussions concern a new role for the empty Royal Hotel as a training centre for the hospitality industry.

His comments came as Arun District Council co-incidentially approved the latest plans to fully convert the hotel, on The Esplanade, into flats.

The scheme by Arundel Electrical is for 18 flats across the near 2,000sq m of the basement, ground, first, second and third floors.

Ten flats were created in the hotel in 1988 and a further ten granted approval by Arun three years ago in a decision which still stands. Council planning officer Simon Davis said the latest scheme was acceptable because of the precedent established in 2015.

No evidence had been shown that the hotel had since become more viable.

“It is not considered that the proposal will adversely affect the character of this building of character or the surrounding conservation area.

“It is considered that the site is sustainably located such that residential occupiers would not need to own a car to access local services, facilities and sources of employment,” he stated in his report.

The current scheme did increase the number of bedrooms in the flats from 28 to 36 though it was for two fewer flats.

But the permission will be refused if the developer fails to sign a legal agreement within two months to give £7,000 towards accessible natural open green spaces because the site is within 5km of Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

Clothes aid to refugees CARING church-goers around Bognor Regis were today delivering winter warmers to help refugees.

The congregation members of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and its two parish churches at Rose Green and Slindon collected 80 banana boxes full of clothes and wellington boots.

They were transporting them to a depot in Worthing where they will be collected tomorrow with the donations from other churches to fill a container for Samara's Aid to send on a monthlong journey to Syria.

They will be used to help those of all ages who have been forced to flee the fierce fighting of recent years in the Middle Eastern country.

Gabrielle Thorpe is a member of the parish's justice and peace committee.

She said: "This is a wonderful thing to do. These people in Syria have suffered from the most terrible trauma and abuse. They have lost their relatives, their homes and everything else.

"What they are getting from us are gifts of love.

There is a real sense we are doing something really

helpful. This is not a hand-out. This is a donation of high quality clothing which will help the refugees in the future."

Samara's Aid was set up in 2013 by Samara Levy after she vowed to help as a result of watching TV news reports about the fierce fighting in Syria as ISIS rampaged through the region.

Her charity has campaigned for help for those in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon who have been innocent victims of the bloodshed.

The worshippers at Our Lady Of Sorrows in Clarence Road and their fellow congregations at St Anthony's in Rose Green and St Richard's in Slindon also backed the appeal in 2015 and 2016.

The latest donations were collected in the church's six masses on Sunday. They included wardrobes-full of high quality coats, pullovers and boots ready for the coming winter.

Nine parishioners spent more than two hours on Monday at the parish centre in Albert Road cleaning and packing the items. The boxes came from Sainsbury's and the transport from Reynolds.

FROM page one NEIGHBOURHOOD plan called for the 1.94 hectare farmland to stay undeveloped - after the housing proposals by the landowner, the Church Commissioners, were approved by Arun District Council.

That decision was made last September and the parish council’s planning, amenities and environment vice-chairman, Cllr Gill Yeates, also focused on the traffic on the area’s roads.

“The residents of this parish have suffered an expotential increase in traffic and the resultant congestion since the opening of the Bognor Regis relief road, now part of the A259,” she said.

“The two ‘pinch points’ within the parish are the A259 Rowan Way and the A29 through the village of Shripney, neither of which have any proposals for mitigation.”

“Local people, quite rightly, feel that the surveys and modelling have largely not predicted the problems which have resulted from earlier developments.”

But a statement by transport consultant Paul Smith, for the Church Commissioners, said: “The analysis of the collision data indicates that New Barn Lane and the vicinity of the site does not have a poor road safety record.

“The proposed site access has been designed in accordance with Manual for Streets guidance.

Regeneration plans on view NEW PLANS for the Hothamton car park in Bognor Regis are going on view next week.

The regeneration proposals can be seen from 11am-3pm next Friday at the Alexandra Theatre in the Regis Centre.

Arun District Council officers and their consultancy team will be present to answer questions about the design ideas for a park lined with trees which stretches the entire length of the key site.

Cllr Gillian Brown, Arun's leader, said: "This will be an opportunity for us to engage with the community and gather people's thoughts and opinions on the scheme.

"We are very excited about the proposal which is to create an exciting new park, similar to a tree-lined continental market square. "(It will be) a location for all seasons, where people will be able to relax, exercise, shop, browse, eat or be entertained - something to suit all ages and every mood.

"We welcome your views, reaction and feedback. So, it would be great to see lots of people come along to the event."

This will be the first chance residents will have to view the proposals for the linear park, costed at £2.5m, since the principles of the idea were agreed by the council in March of this year.

The existing car park - between Steyne Street and Queensway - will be replaced with what the council is calling flexible parking spaces within 'soft landscaping'.

This will include grassed areas, gravel and trees, as the site is transformed, and provide a link between the town centre

and the seafront.

Also included in the initial plans were blocks of flats on the site's western side, along with a health centre site, as well as the potential for one or two retail outlets on the ground floor of the residential buildings.

The proposed linear park could provide a variety of uses for children and adults in the form of a new play area, adult gym, cafes and a possible boules pitch.

Other uses could include water features, public seating and cycle routes.

The scheme for Hothamton is part of the Gardens by the Sea concept which Arun has devised for the regeneration of Bognor Regis after public consultation two years ago.

The concept also includes a winter gardens for the Regis Centre site on the Place St Maur.

This £50m-plus proposal will see a 3,000sq m winter gardens all year round attraction created on the site.

This could host children's attractions, cafes and bars, a performing space and temporary exhibitions as well as an array of trees and plants from around the world. The redevelopment will also include a new theatre with a capacity of 420-450 seats compared with the current 357-capacity venue.

An hotel and new flats, with commercial uses underneath, is intended as well as a decked car park of three levels above the ground to provide 200 spaces is also envisaged to replace the current spaces.

But the council has said completion of the winter gardens is several years away because of the site's challenges.

Children's play expert Jan Cosgrove, who is also a town councillor, said his idea of a modern version of the muchloved Fun Bus was progressing.

"The Number 18 Project (a youth centre in Waterloo Square) has gone but the young people it served and would have served in the future continue to be in the town and there are simply not enough facilities to serve them."

This situation could be partly overcome with a double-decker bus or coach equipped with equipment such as a coffee bar and pool table.

"As well as the town centre, the Children's and Young People's Project 21 will be able to go to parts of Bognor Regis where there not the facilities," he said.

The scheme would be distinct from the youth worker about to be appointed

by Bognor Regis Town Council. But it would increase the commitment to the area's young people, he said.

The red Fun Bus was a familiar sight around the town from 1983-2011.

CAR AND van owners around Bognor Regis have been warned against helping criminals.

A spate of thefts from cars and vans took place across Bognor Regis and Felpham last weekend. Sat navs and cash were stolen in the series of raids.

A Sussex Police spokesman said vehicle owners could play a big part in avoiding the risk of becoming victims of crime.

"The majority of this type of crime is opportunistic and occurs because valuables have been left on view or the vehicle left unsecure.

"If a vehicle is left unsecure, it only takes ten seconds for valuables to be stolen."

He advised motorists to check their vehicle doors were locked properly because of the risk automatic locking devices can be affected by electronic interference. This should be done even if the vehicle is being left for a few

minutes.

"Take all valuables with you, if you can," the spokesman stated. "If you are unable to take them from the vehicle, lock them in the boot or place them out of view."

Keys should never be left in a vehicle, even for a few seconds. They should also be moved away from the front door of a property if possible.

"A thief can reach in using a hand or device and steal the keys to your vehicle," the spokesman added.

"Fitting a plate to the rear of the letterbox opening can prevent this."

The incidents of crime around the town in the past week also included the theft by a burglar of a Playstation, an iPhone and a laptop from a property in Stroud Green Drive, North Bersted.

An attempted burglary to a garage in Monterey Gardens, Bognor Regis, took place between September 25 and 27 and no entry was gained.

Pamela's fair helps causes

` Pier group meets NEARLY three people a day have signed up to a group which promotes Bognor Regis Pier.

Members who attended the first annual meeting of Bognor Regis Pier Watch were told its membership had reached 682 in its first eight months. The group's goal is to hit 1,000 members in a year.

Chairman Jan Malpas, below left with Dr Anya Chapman, said: "We decided to have our meeting in September rather than next January, due to the dark evenings, weather changes and Christmas.

"Our guest speaker was Dr Anya Chapman, from the National Piers Society. She gave an excellent talk on the fall and rise of seaside piers, which was both interesting, informative and motivating."

The second half of the wellattended meeting - held in the studio at the Regis Centre contained presentations from the group's committee as well as questions from members.

Bognor Regis Pier Watch was formed at the start of this year to protect the Grade II-listed building for future generations.

Knockout success in store for boxing

AN ANNUAL boxing night in Bognor Regis is set to be another charity success.

This year's Bognor Regis Rotary Club inter-counties black tie dinner is being held in Butlin's on November 30.

A Rotary spokesman said: "As last year, a revamped evening has been arranged

by David Dear and David Larner. All monies will be equally divided between Bognor Regis Boxing Club and the Rotary Club of Bognor Regis charities."

Previous years have seen thousands of pounds raised by the night of top class action in the ring.

The latest event will feature some 12 contests between Hampshire and Sussex with two professional ring girls and a pre-dinner close up magic show by Magic Circle member Jeremy Hayward.

Auction items will include a glove signed by three-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, along with a

£10 raffle with a top prize of £500.

Invited guests, subject to commitments, are former English welterweight champion Scott Minter, former undefeated Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Tony Oakley and WBU super featherweight champion Michael Gomez.

Racing driver Derek Bell, a five times Le Mans winner and three times winner of the Daytona 24 hours race, could also attend. All the guests' appearance are subject to contractual arrangements.

Cancellations have seen two spare tables for ten diners become available at £50 a person or the tables can be split into single tickets. Contact Peter Stemp, of the Rotary club, on 01243 866139.

Non-dining tickets at £10 each, with food and drinks available on the night, are on sale at JW Sports in the High Street or on the door on the night.

A KIND-HEARTED Felpham resident raised more than £250 at the latest charity event in her house.

Pamela Evans staged an autumn fair last Saturday in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and the Dreambuilding project of St Wilfrid's Hospice.

Some 60-70 people went along to her property in Mornington Crescent to enjoy a vintage cream tea, live music and bric-abrac stalls, among the attractions.

Mrs Evans said: "The event raised £266.62, which I was well pleased with, considering the weather wasn't good."

Among the fundraising items to buy

were floral arrangements made by patients at St Wilfrid's in the Friday floral art classes held by florist Mrs Evans.

Mrs Evans has organised a succession of fundraising events for the hospice, such as folk music nights, to back its plans for the £15.5m hospice at Bosham.

She also decided to help Macmillan after one of her friends at the Evergreens Club in Yapton, who helped the charity, passed away recently.

"I've been fundraising since I helped animals after the Torrey Canyon oil spill in 1967. So, it's become a way of life and I don't want to stop now," she said.

A blooming marvellous night of awards for green-fingered entrants GREEN-FINGERED residents and businesses celebrated success at the annual Bognor in Bloom awards last Tuesday. The awards, held at Butlin's, saw the achievements of keen gardeners across Bognor Regis celebrated.

Among the big winners were South Bersted Primary School, scooping best garden or vegetable plot designed and looked after by a child up to and including 11 years of age and best vegetable plot at a school.

Gardener Nat Austin said: "At South Bersted school, the children are very hands on within the school grounds, they enjoy planting, tasting and making signs for the vegetable patch. The children will have their confidence boosted with the trophies displayed at school."

Winning best business balcony, window box, hanging basket or container and best neighbourhood, street, locality or residents' association, sheltered or residential accommodation and also best business frontage was the Royal Bay residential home in Aldwick Road.

Clair Speller, deputy manager at the home, was really pleased with its successes after triumphs in previous years.

She said: "We are really chuffed. We have put a lot of work in to the flowers.

Our maintenance team have kept them looking great. We do it to make the home look pretty. People often walk past taking pictures.

"We actively encourage our residents to get involved with the gardening. They really love the flowers. They often sit outside looking at the display and their relatives always comment on it, too."

Gay Tiernan and Michael Collier, from Woodlands, Chichester Road, received

golds for the best-kept front garden category and best private balcony, window box, hanging basket or container.

Gay said: "Every year we win something.

I've lived there for 50 years now and Mike has been with me for 40 years. We just like to have a pretty garden so everyone else can enjoy it as well.

"We don't have a back garden, just a yard, so we make the most of the front garden.

We're very lucky to have a garden at all. We love it. The garden makes my home."

Mike added: "It is a lot of work, especially the dead-heading. I plant the garden and do a bit of designing.

"Every day we have to keep on top of it.

In the winter we leave it to nature. We put pretty Polyanthas in tubs around the porch though. In the summer we get people coming past to have a look and stopping to having a chat."

Anne and Edward Hallett, from 34, Kenilworth Road, won the best front garden category again for the fourth year running. They've now won around 14 awards since 1999.

Anne said: "We try to do something different each year and something a bit quirky. We have plans for next year already. Next year we will have more hanging baskets and begonias.

"We are so pleased we won but we were a bit disappointed with our display because we have used a lot of fuchsias but it's been a rubbish year for them.

"We do it because we like our garden to look nice and there's not many others down our road who do much with their front garden.

"Our secret to success is just to keep changing the layout. If we don't like something, we just rip it out and start

again."

Edward added: "It's absolutely fantastic we have won this year because we won front garden overall, whereas previously they had sub categories of sizes. It's not cheap to do it. We spent about ÂŁ300 this year on plants for the front garden. I've just spent another ÂŁ900 and two weeks refurbishing the back garden too."

A special civic award was given to the late Laurie Barnes, Bognor Regis Civic Society chairman, who passed away, aged 76, earlier this year.

The award was accepted on his behalf by his younger sister, Judy Longhurst.

Friend and colleague, Rosemary Warren, chairman of Hotham Park Heritage Trust, said: "I first met Laurie in 1998 when I joined the committee of the trust and Laurie was chairman.

"It's thanks to Laurie's leadership that we have the wonderful legacy that is Hotham Park today.

"I will close by saying if you have been lucky enough to visit his secret garden, you will probably understand his passion."

Rosemary was also an awardwinner on behalf of Hotham Park after it won the best sustainable and environmental friendly planting, for the sixth year running.

She said: "I am really proud of winning this. The last occupant, William Fletcher, would have strongly supported this.

"Our intention is to evolve and develop the William Fletcher collection of plants so that his contribution towards the plants in the park is recognised."

` Merger scrapped PROPOSALS by Arun District Council to merge some of its services with two other councils have been stopped.

The idea was abandoned because of the difficulty of co-ordinating the three authorities' computer set-ups.

But Arun chief executive Nigel Lynn said talks with union members had shown how the council could still save £320,000 a year quicker than it would achieve through any sharing arrangement.

He told Arun's overview select committee said: "Staff are sometimes not keen to work in different buildings. Two of the authorities would have had to move their staff to another area.

"But the thing that came out with the most difficulty right across all the authorities was the IT side of things. Historically, they have had different IT arrangements, different contractors and different software contracts.

"The length of time to get out of these arrangements and the extra cost would outweigh any savings."

Arun had been talking to district councils at Chichester and Horsham about sharing services like ICT, revenues and benefits, customer services and payroll.

Mr Lynn said having spare rooms at the Arun Civic Centre because they would not be needed for sharing services had allowed the space to be leased to the Probation Service for £60,000 yearly.

Cllr Norman Dingemans, the committee's vice-chairman, said: "Letting the rooms for £60,000 - that is a total saving of £380,000. I think that's really good."

The face-to-face advice was provided by some 30 employers and training organisations.

It included information about careers, apprenticeships and training courses to give those who went along the chance to find out more about changing their lives.

The event was such a success its organisers will be repeating it twice during next year.

Among the estimated 200 people who went along to the Regis Centre was Kristina Kosovskaja, 47, of Bognor Regis. She has been in a wheelchair since a serious car crash severed her spinal cord when she was 15.

She said: “I am looking for a job, probably with my hands, and a training course, especially in English, because I find it interesting.

“I worked in admin in my home country of Lithuania but it is not possible to do this here because of the difference of the languages.

“I think this event is a very good idea. We do not have events like these in Lithuania where people can meet employers.”

The event was held by West Sussex County Council’s children and family centres and Find It Out centres, along with the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton Job Centre Plus offices.

Joint organiser Gaby Sartin, a volunteer and employment co-

ordinator at West Sussex County Council, said: “This is the first event we have held in Bognor Regis and it’s been really successful.

“This has been a good venue for us.

It’s been bustling. We’ve had a lot of footfall from the community and we’ve had excellent feedback from people.

“We will be looking to hold another two in Bognor Regis next year and two in Littlehampton with help from my colleague, Kim Seex.”

The stands included jobs at Butlin’s, details about apprenticeships from West Sussex County Council and opportunities with the National Careers Service.

Also present were community groups like Citizens Advice, Stonepillow and My Sister’s House. They provided advice about overcoming barriers which might show some people getting a job.

Impact Workability works with clients who have disabilities. Employment supervisor Jo Evans said: “Being here has been good for us. There’s been a lot more footfall than I’ve seen at some events.

“I’ve done a lot of signposting and talking to people about what we do. We work with people with disabilities, a lot of which are hidden.

“For people with acquired brain injuries, caused by accidents or strokes, it’s about a case of finding out what they can do and how they can find a course or a job to suit them.”

The next jobs and skills fair is being held from 11am-2.30pm on November 9 at the Wickbourne Centre in Littlehampton.

This will be the seventh of the fairs to be held in the area.

Pier's wartime past recalled FORMER Leading Wren Joyce Ablitt returned to Bognor Regis Pier to recall the sailors with whom she used to serve.

Joyce was guest of honour at the dedication service for a new memorial to the pier's Second World War role as HMS St Barbara.

She was in charge of the galley on the base for about a year between 1943 and 1944. She said: "I loved every minute of it.

I felt sad when they came to say goodbye because I knew they were not coming back. That was the terrible thing.

"That's the reason why I am here - to remember all those who didn't return. It's nice to keep their memories alive after all these years."

Joyce, 92, who lives in a Felpham care home, was It saw an inscribed granite plinth unveiled on the prom in front of the pier.

Commander Michael Dreelan, commanding officer of HMS Excellent in Portsmouth, laid a poppy wreath at the plinth. He said: "HMS Excellent has got a long-standing connection with HMS St Barbara. HMS Excellent was the Royal Navy's home of naval gunnery and HMS St Barbara was an off-shoot of that.

"Today is very important to us. What defines us as a service is not only our values and standards but also our traditions.

"HMS St Barbara will always be important to us. The men who were here were that good they shot down a German Dornier bomber and that is amazing."

range and gunnery training school was commissioned on the pier from September 1, 1943, until January 23, 1945.

The new memorial stands on what would have been its quarterdeck. HMS St Barbara had four officers and 74 ratings and they downed that Dornier on February 10, 1943, on a day Chichester was bombed.

The new memorial is the third to be dedicated to the piece of naval history.

The first was installed on the front of the pier in 2010 by the then Bognor Regis Armed Forces Day Committee under the direction of the late Felpham resident Les Garrett, who served at D-Day. It was removed during works on the pier and a new memorial installed on the back of the pier last year. But this suffered weather damage last winter.

Town firm Reynolds sponsored the replacement as part of the firm's 150th anniversary. The service was conducted by the Rev Dr Alison Green, curate at Chichester Cathedral and chaplain to the Bognor Regis Sea Cadets.

About 150 people attended the 15 minute event. They watched as Cadet Charlotte Johnson, 12, accompanied Cmdr Dreelan to the memorial with the wreath.

She said: "This is about remembering everyone who served here. They trained and they fought for our country."

Cadet First Class Zachory Coppock, 13, and Ordinary Cadet Jack Golding, 14, unveiled the memorial and Cadet Jade Brooker, ten, and Senior Cadet Alfie Harris, 12, were also present.

He is an inspiration to other teens who may not have had the best start but prove with hard work and determination they can change their fate and have a good life, despite the hand they were dealt.”

Joe’s enthusiasm as he ran to the stage to receive his award was evidence of his enthusiasm!

Spoilt for choice at charity coffee events TRULY scrumptious cakes were found all over Bognor Regis as multiple groups and companies hosted their own Macmillan coffee mornings.

The nationwide charity events held last week proved a hit with both organisers and customers enjoying the sweet treats on offer.

For members of the Hotham Park Heritage Trust it was a milestone occasion as their £300 intake gave them a total raised for Macmillan Cancer Support as £2,000 over six years.

At their event eight members of the trust donated a variety of home-made cakes including fresh cream meringues, red velvet cupcakes and a coffee and walnut cake.

Organiser Christine Hunter, the trust’s membership secretary, pictured inset with Sue Curnick, said: “Cancer touches most people’s lives and I think Macmillan offers amazing support to both the sufferer and their families.

“It feels good to be able to hold an event like this. It’s proving very sociable and that’s what a coffee morning should be all about – cake, coffee and a chat.”

The community solutions manager at the Aldingbourne Trust charity shop in Aldwick Road, Lisa Palmer, thought the same. "It was very well attended. Lots of members of the community came by, as well as a bus-load of people we support from the centre and the manager of the cafe over there.

"This was the first time we had done this and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. It's

a positive way to engage with the local community," she said.

Lisa's team raised more than £300 through cake sales as well as a raffle and tombola with prizes donated from businesses in Aldwick Road.

For many businesses it was their first time taking part in the coffee morning.

Charlotte Winter, from Sight & Sound in Bognor Regis High Street, explained why they had become involved.

She said: "This is our first year. I've got a relative with the illness and most people know someone with it. We just wanted to do something for the community."

The team raised £325.06 and, as a company, it has decided to match the figure which doubles their total.

It was a similar case for Oyster Estates in Flansham, who made £500 for the charity.

Personal assistant Tanya Kavanagh said: "It's such a great thing to do for such a wonderful cause. We had planned on doing it last year but somehow we ran out of time. This year we made sure we were ready and we're so glad we were.

"It's just been lovely. We've had the chance to meet some of the people we work with over the phone for the first time face to face so it's been a great way of becoming more sociable as an office."

Some businesses were more experienced with the offering of cakes and coffee.

Bognor Regis Railway Social Club held its second Macmillan coffee morning.

Club secretary Trish Lewis hoped to make this year's even more successful.

She said: "This year we wanted to make it

bigger and better so we've got extra things going on like the raffle with prizes donated by members, and an auction for watches.

"It has proved very popular. It's usually quiet on Friday mornings but today we've been so busy."

The club raised £701.40, which included the cake sale, a raffle and an auction for two watches, in comparison to last year's £150.

Owner of Pebbles Hair Design in Aldwick Road, Gill Boxall, was pleased to be taking part again to raise £350. "This is our fourth year doing the morning and we usually get such a good response. As a business it's nice to be able to give something back to the community," she said.

Mayor praises efforts of all IMPRESSED Bognor Regis town mayor Phil Woodall spoke of his pride in all the businesses that took part in what is known as the world's biggest coffee morning.

Cllr Woodall paid a visit to Nationwide in the High Street, along with his mum, Pam Moseley, to see what tempting treats were available at its event.

He said: "It's nice to see so many businesses in town getting involved. Usually, it's just the smaller businesses who take part in events like this but it's great that even companies like Nationwide are taking part."

The building society offered a range of cakes baked by employees and their relatives and the raised ÂŁ250 over the weekend.

Bognor Regis resident Sarah Jones was there to enjoy what was on offer. She said: "All the staff

here are ever so nice.

"They're brilliant, and always so helpful. I came in just to do some banking and I couldn't resist a cake."

The Nationwide branch in Bognor Regis is no stranger to charitable causes.

Earlier this year they held a cake sale in aid of the Stonepillow charity and manager Matt Stanleyhas run the Littlehampton 10k in aid of Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

Matt explained why Nationwide was a part of the morning.

He said: "To us, our community is so special and we like to give something back.

"We are so lucky that our members are so willing to be generous and get involved with events like this. Everyone's got some connection to Macmillan or the illness in some way."

` DIY waste decision DIY WASTE can continue to be left at household waste recycling sites around Bognor Regis and Chichester for free.

West Sussex County Council has confirmed it will carry on the suspension of charges started last April on a temporary basis.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, its cabinet member for environment, said: "We said to our residents that we would suspend charging until the government clarifies its position on the matter.

"It is not expected that government will be in a position to do this for some time.

"So, we have taken the step to confirm we will not charge and look for savings in other ways."

` Witness appeal AN APPEAL for witnesses has been made after a moped rider was seriously injuried in Pagham.

The 24-year-old Chichester man suffered a broken collarbone in the collision. He told police he had swerved to avoid a blue BMW which pulled out while he was travelling along Pagham Road. He lost control and fell from his moped.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "If anyone has any information about the collision, we would ask them to contact us."

Children get wigs with salon's hair donations f Waspi members with Alan Butcher

Women given pension support CAMPAIGNING women from Bognor Regis and Littlehampton met leading MPs as they staged a rally at a political conference.

Members of the Bognor and Chichester South group of Waspi used their attendance at the Labour Party conference to press their case for fairer pensions treatment.

Area co-ordinator Jill Robertson said: "The throng of women who gathered by the entrance to the conference at the Brighton Centre were greeted by many well-known passers-by.

"A lot made a point of coming to see us by coming out of the conference in their break, such as Alan Butcher, the party's election candidate in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, Richard

Leonard, who is a leading contender for leader of the Scottish Labour Party, and Yvette Cooper MP. "There were also a fair number of women who were not aware of Waspi (Women Against State Pension Inequality) and were given information and encouraged to join their local group."

But Jill said news from Debbie Abrahams, the shadow secretary of state for work and pensions, had not been accepted by the group.

She had proposed a cut in the retirement age to 64 but with no mention of compensation for 1950sborn women who had seen their state pension age raised from 60 to 66 in just a few years.

A BOGNOR REGIS hair salon has joined forces with a leading hair styling brand in their latest campaign.

Lotus Styling, known for their eyecatching window displays, are working with GHD and the Little Princess Trust.

The Chop to Your Chin campaign has been running throughout September and will continue to the end of this month.

The salon, in Aldwick Road, is asking clients to donate seven inches or more to be made in to children's wigs.

The charity that makes real hair wigs for children who have lost their hair through cancer treatments and other illnesses.

Salon owner Daren Terry said: “We just can’t believe how generous people have been, donating their hair, which is such an important part of them.

"We have even had a couple of our long haired male clients donate their lovely locks too.”

The salon has already had 34 clients donate a whopping 352 inches of hair.

It takes 70 inches of hair to produce one wig which means the salon is well on its way to helping to provide five wigs for the charity.

The Little Princess Trust has given away over 5,000 free wigs since its inception

and with the rising demand for wigs, the charity needs more help than ever to generate hair donations.

Lotus Styling is also celebrating the recent success of second year salon apprentice, Rhiannon Hambleton, 20, who was a finalist in the prestigious National Hairdressers Federation’s Future Professionals Competition and senior stylist's Kier Terry's 25th anniversary at the salon.

Founded in 1897, this brass band has served the Chichester and local

Habib is descended from a line of Khassonk é griots, traditional troubadours who provide musical entertainment at social gatherings and special events.

Coming from a family of 17 brothers and sisters, Habib would accompany his griot mother, and inherited a passion for music from his paternal grandfather who played the kamele n’ goni, a traditional four-stringed instrument associated with hunters from the Wassolou region of Mali.

Habib spoke of his musical style. He said: "I’m curious about all the music in the world, but I make music from Mali. In my country, we have so many beautiful rhythms and melodies. Many villages and communities have their own kind of music.

"Usually, Malian musicians play only their own ethnic music, but me, I go everywhere.

My job is to take all these traditions and to make something with them, to use them in my music."

Don't leaf these wines out for a tasty autumn Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

QUELLE semaine - Thursday night watching the legendary Chris Farlowe at the Empress in Littlehampton.

Friday night listening to the dulcet tones of Jo Harman at the Assembly Room in Chichester and culminating with The Voices of Abba - pictured right - on Saturday rocking the Chichester Inn. Back to matters oenological, Lidl has just launched its autumn collection which is predominantly French in terms of provenance, so I duly headed there to procure some interesting deals.

My first white wine selection was a 2016 Clos des Ronceveaux Touraine Sauvignon Blanc priced at £6.49 which restored my faith in the French variety of the grape.

The wine was decidedly fresh and citrussy, well balanced with good acidity and a perfect seafood or salmon wine, in my opinion.

Another white which sparked my interest was a 2016 Hans Michel Riesling and I was curious to see whether it would be of the dry variety.

Well, Bob's your uncle, this was reminiscent of Rieslings I used to imbibe

in the late seventies and had lime and apple on the palate and was fresh and dry with good acidity.

This fine Alsatian wine can be drunk on its own or would pair well with grilled salmon and is a good buy at £7 99.

As a curiosity, the Côtes du Jura Vieilles Vignes 2012 Chardonnay priced at £8.99

is a veritable unique example of winemaking, being doughy and nutty with baked apple and spices and complex notes which would complement soft cheeses such as Vacherin Mont d'Or. Yeasty and ideal for dry sherry drinkers, this unusual French wine is well worth a punt! If you fancy a bit of bubble, then

the Australian Seaview Brut, at a most enticing £5.99 price tag, is toasty and has good mousse with a light yeasty nose of baked apple, apricot, pear and lemon and represents outstanding value for a quality sparkling wine!

In terms of red wines, the 2016 Château Bonhomme Cuvée Clara is my wine of the week given its exceedingly low price of just £4.99 and flavours of red and black fruits and a good finish with a dryness to savour.

This red from the Languedoc Roussillon area of Southern France is a top buy -Allez-y!

Chicken and mushroom mini filo pies

Method

INGREDIENTS • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 1/2 small leek, trimmed, halved, washed, finely chopped • 300g chicken thigh fillets, trimmed, finely chopped • 50g button mushrooms, finely chopped • 1 tablespoon finely shredded fresh sage leaves • 2 tablespoons plain flour • 3/4 cup Massel chicken style liquid stock • 8 sheets filo pastry • 90g butter, melted

Equally competitive was the Adega de Borba 2015 Alentejo, another Portuguese gem with forest fruit to the fore, soft tannins and a nose of spicy, dark peppery fruit and a snip at £5.99.

Reverting to French mode, the 2015 L'Esprit Du Fief Crozes Hermitage priced at £7.99 subtly exuded red fruits and spice and is a wine I will re-visit sans hésitation.

Any other wines pictured above meet with my approval and I wish you a Bacchanalian October!

1. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add leek. Cook for 3 minutes or until softened.

Add chicken.

Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 to 6 minutes or until just cooked through. Add mushrooms and sage.

Cook for 2 minutes, or until mushroom is tender.

Add flour. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add stock.

Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes or until boiled and thickened. Remove from heat.

2. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced.

Grease a 12-hole, 1 1/2 tablespoon capacity patty pan. Place 1 sheet filo on a flat surface. Brush with butter. Top with 1 sheet filo. Repeat layering with 2 sheets filo. Cut filo stack in half lengthways.

Cut each half into thirds.

INGREDIENTS

Cover remaining pastry with a damp tea towel so it doesn't dry out. Carefully press each filo piece into six holes of prepared patty pan, allowing overhang.

Repeat with remaining filo and butter.

3. Spoon 1 heaped tablespoon chicken mixture into each pastry case. Fold up sides to form a pouch and pinch to enclose the filling. Brush with butter and season with salt and pepper.

Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden. Stand for 3 minutes. Serve.

Community News & Views UNTAPPED potential exists in Bognor Regis for exciting job opportunities, it was revealed at the latest Hubbub meeting.

Business owners and creative professionals gathered at the Pier Hotel last Wednesday to discuss the town’s future digital hub at the railway station and the employment it could garner.

Jennie Lloyd, from Wired Sussex in Brighton, one of the companies developing the hub, explained their objectives.

She said: “This is all to help the growth and support of the digital community in Bognor Regis. We’ve been running these ‘hubs’ since last year. There’s such a friendly, informal feel about them and they’ve been doing really well.”

Her colleague, Phil Jones, was keen the Hubbubs continued.

“It’s great for everyone to learn what other people doing and it provides more opportunities,” he said.

Mr Jones also praised recent changes to the University of Chichester, whose new engineering and digital technology park will see a boost in student numbers in the town.

He said: “There’s a real opportunity with what’s happening at the University of Chichester. An extra 1,500 students will come to Bognor Regis. That’s going to be really great for the town."

Presenting his ideas at the monthly meeting was Mike Williams, a business development director for agency Strawberry Soup.

The Felpham resident said: “There’s a lot of potential here for the digital hub. In Bognor Regis, we are close to Brighton, Portsmouth and London.

"There’s so much work from all these places. Just because we are based here it does not mean you can’t pick up really exciting jobs."

Angela Taylor, who runs Panda Police Car Hire in Bognor Regis, said: “The whole idea of being able to have a collaborative, creative hub is amazing. It will be a portal where we can work with other people, not just in Bognor Regis – but in businesses outside of the town."

MEMBERS of staff at a Yapton care home have taken part in the world's longest inflatable obstacle course.

Their active efforts raised £340 to help the residents at Warmere Court in Downview Way by improving their garden.

The challenge was based at Fontwell Park racecourse. It involved a series of interactive and wacky obstacles spread across various unique themed zones.

These included a lava zone, a jungle zone and an ocean zone.

Participants had to start by jumping off a 20ft platform into a crash bag before they attempted to complete the course in the quickest time possible.

Mary Latter, home manager for Warmere Court, said: "I'm so proud of my staff and their determination to do something for our residents who we are all so fond of.

"They all did amazingly well and the residents will be thrilled.

The money raised will be used to build a pergola for the garden as they love to sit outside."

An activity co-ordinator at the Shaw Healthcare-run home, Amber Porter, said: "As exhausting as it was, it was so much fun to do something a little different.

"Thank you to everyone who supported us and helped to raise a great amount of money."

The inflatable obstacle course was 1,000ft long and its five zones included more than 30 obstacles for adults and teenagers to tackle. Its associated inflatable village included a minicourse for the under-12s as well as a section for under-5s.

The village included a Pulsar Laser Quest, crazy golf and bouncy castles as well as refreshment stalls.

The pets were entered into a selection of 25 classes.

The 'Have A Go' agility section, organised by Mad about Dogs, was extremely popular.

It was busy all day and more than 100 dogs enjoyed having a go.

Together with the many stalls, dog show entries and sponsorship, this enabled £3,000 to be raised.

The profits will be shared between two charities, Boxgrove Priory and Boxgrove Village Hall.

CREATIVE gardeners in Bersted have had their talents recognised.

The winners of this year's Bersted in Bloom competition were presented with their certificates by Bersted Parish Council chairman Brian Knight, at Jubilee Community Hall.

He thanked the five judges for giving up their time to take on the difficult task of choosing the winners.

A THEORBO provided a visually impressive way to start the guitar gala concert, pictured below, at West Sussex Guitar Club's opening night for 2017/18.

The instrument, played by Jonatan Bought, is more than two metres long and looks like a lute that has been painfully stretched on a rack. It has 14 strings and had to be carefully manoeuvred on stage at the Regis School of Music.

Sam Brown accompanied Jonatan on his Renaissance lute. There followed three songs by John Dowland sung beautifully by Duncan Appleby (tenor) and accompanied sensitively by Sam. These were Unquiet Thoughts, Flow My Tears and Can She Excuse.

Gala reviewer Debbie Burford said: "Jonatan then told us a little about the theorbo which originated in Italy in the 16th century in Italian it is called chitarrone, which means 'big guitar' and is a single-strung instrument unlike the lute which is double-strung."

A lovely duet of theorbo and lute followed - Ciaconna by Alessandro Piccinini. Sam then played two solos - O'Carolan's Welcome and Captain O'Kane.

It was then the turn of Laura Snowden to become the first of the night's performers to play classical guitar on her return visit to the club. She began with Bach's Allemande from Suite No 3 BWV 1009.

Her next piece, one of her compositions, was the very hypnotic and beautiful, Anpao.

The first half of the concert finished with Regondi's impressive Introduction and Caprice Op. 23 where Laura demonstrated her mastery of fast scale passages and lots of slides.

Fantasia for Guitar & Piano by the Swiss composer Hance Haug began the second half and was played with great expertise by Jonatan on guitar and Irena Radic at the grand piano.

"There followed three movements of a Sonata (Allegro, Andante, Allegro Vivo) by Spanish composer, Joaquin Turina, which Jonatan played beautifully on solo guitar," said Debbie.

Iaonnis Theodoridis came to the stage to finish the concert programme with a selection of solo guitar works.

He began with Impromptu (Michael Berkeley) and followed that with a miniature by the Danish composer, Ben Sorensen Shadow Siciliano. These led up to his finishing piece, Tres Piezas Espanolas, to round off his first performance on an English stage for three years. The acclaim from the audience led to an encore of a charming guitar duet from Jonatan and Ioannis.

The club's artistic director, Sasha Levtov, said it was a wonderful concert to begin its 25th year and he hoped the musicians returned.

SUPPORTERS of St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester are being urged to take up a challenge in the new year on its behalf.

Some spectacular choices to enjoy 2018 are being offered to those who want to join Team Wilf.

These include the largest annual fundraising event on the planet, abseiling 100m down one of the south's most iconic landmarks and throwing themselves out of a perfectly good plane 10,000 feet up. The money raised by those who take part will help to raise much-needed funds for the hospice's work in the surrounding community.

First up is the truly uplifting and jaw-dropping experience of the Leap for Love tandem skydive at Old Sarum Airfield in Wiltshire on March 24.

This will offer the chance to freefall from a plane before parachuting to the ground attached to a qualified instructor.

A month later comes the chance to fill one of the hospice's five places in the 2018 London Marathon. The fundraising target for anyone who wants to take part is £2,250.

The fun continues into the summer with an exclusive St Wilfrid's abseiling day on July 21 at the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. There are 40 places available for those who can raise at least £250.

New for next year is a chance to cycle for the hospice in the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100.

Special buildings recall prominent residents Houses, churches, cottages and structures have been listed to highlight their importance LISTED buildings are those which are deemed to be of special architectural or historic interest.

The Secretary of State for National Heritage lists them on the advice of English Heritage.

It should be noted here that it is possible for any member of the general public to have a building listed, providing it meets the national criteria.

It should also be noted that this national list includes buildings ranging from castles to flint walls. We tend to assume that in order for a building to be listed it must be very major or prominent in an area. However, that is not always the case.

Within the Felpham and Middleton area there are a number of Grade II-listed buildings.

Felpham Road has a number of cottages' flint walls and also the K6 telephone box outside the post office.

Felpham Way and Limmer Lane contain more cottages while there is also St Mary’s Church. This is listed because buried within the walls are William Hayley and Dr Cyril Jackson, who was Dean of Christ Church and one time tutor to the Prince Regent.

Interestingly, there is also a section of flint wall, which is listed, which is a boundary to the churchyard and is believed to have been built c1800. These are, therefore, not so

prominent but of course are of special interest.

If we travel across the area to Pagham, some of the listed buildings are within the Church Lane area. These include the Parish Church of St Thomas a'Becket and Becket’s Barn, which is situated within the Church Farm Holiday Village. The wider Pagham and Nyetimber area also contains a number of farmhouses and licensed premises such as The Lion and The Inglenook Hotel.

Travelling back into Bognor Regis, there is a group of premises situated around the North Bersted area, including Shripney Manor and numerous cottages on North Bersted Street.

If we then travel to South Bersted not only is the church of St Mary Magdalene included but also a number of walls and cottages around this area.

As I mentioned previously, the listing is decided on a variety of aspects of each property and, certain walls are included just because they are 'flint and rubble wall, with brick piers having semi-circular copings'.

This makes them of historical interest from a building material point of view.

In the town centre, properties on the east side of Glamis Street are recorded as being 'a semi-detached pair, each with matching bays nearly the whole width of each house'.

'pierced parapet over moulded cornice, two sash windows in each bay with iron flowerbox frames with floral decoration and convex metal canopies over the lower ones'.

Can you think of some of our modern constructions that could warrant such a detailed and descriptive report on their historical aspect? It would be interesting to see such reports in 50 years time!

Finally, there are buildings in the town that you would expect to be listed such as the railway station, homes in The Steyne and Waterloo Square as well as Hotham Park House. Also, a number of the properties in Upper Bognor Road that have been renovated in recent years are Grade II-listed buildings.

These include The Shrubbery, Redgate House, Northcliffe and Mordington.

Moving on to the blue plaques, which were launched by Arun District Council's directorate of environment, tourism and leisure in 1994, these plaques are used to honour famous people and events of the past. Therefore, now we can have a look at a number of premises that currently have a plaque. Again it is possible for members of the public to suggest names, which they believe should be commemorated in this way.

In Hoe Lane, Flansham, is a cottage with a plaque, as it was here that Gerard Young lived when he wrote his books, notably, The Chronicle of a Country Cottage first published in 1942 in addition to Come into the Country in 1943 and Down Hoe Lane in 1950 as well as The Cottage in the Fields. Unexpectedly, I visited this house with his brother, Derek, in 1988 when I had reprinted The Chronicle of a Country Cottage and was able to see the idyllic surrounds in which he was able to write his

books and local history articles until his death in 1972.

His articles and information have become so much a part of the local history scene in Bognor Regis and district. His articles have supplied much information to both to me and others before me who have acknowledged his accurate and detailed records, which eventually culminated in the History of Bognor Regis in 1983, begun by Gerard and completed by his brother, Derek.

Back to Felpham, The Fox is included because of its association with William Blake as this was where he was arrested.

Turret House is also included as the poet William Hayley from 1745 to 1820 once occupied it. Over the past few months, some blue plaques are nearing a time when they may be removed, the one for RC Sherriff on Sandmartins and the one for Henry Guermonprez in Albert Road could vanish due to redevelopment.

Also close to the seafront in Bognor Regis, there are a number of blue plaques, notably in Belmont Street outside the premises of Belmont Lodge, which was once the home of Dante Gabriel Rosetti, the poet and painter, who spent time there and in Aldwick.

During 1875–6, he worked for a time in the former coach-house and during this time painted about ten paintings before he returned to London to continue with his work.

Many of the premises included as listed buildings are today private residences, which is why I have not detailed specific addresses.

However, it is gratifying to see how properties are continuing to be maintained and also the increasing number that are being returned to their 'former glory.'

Bright showing for Chi as rain fails to PostSport dampen Sussex cross-country relay A RECORD number of teams lined up for the Sussex Cross-Country relay championships at Goodwood, producing a fine display of running.

Drizzly rain for the first couple of races and intermittent showers during the afternoon failed to put a damper on the racing.

With dozens of competitors making their way around the course, it proved to be a successful day on home turf for Chichester Runners.

In the under-13 boys race, Chi's Joe McClarnon took third after recording a fastest lap of 10 minutes 10 seconds, just behind Henry Yelling (Brighton & Hove 9:50) and Nicholas Holland-Ellidge’s (Crawley - 9:53).

That performance was matched in the under-15s by Liam Dunne, who clocked 9:13 behind Luke Ellard (Worthing - 9:00) and Crawley’s Calum Stone (9:13).

While those individual successes were welcomed, it was the team performance where most eyes were focused.

There was drama in the senior men's race.

After Chichester had led on the first leg of the race, Brighton & Hove took up the running and never look like being headed. They

finished comfortably clear of Lewes with Chichester holding on to take the bronze medals. However, after they were found to have fielded a 'non-Sussex' runner, Brighton & Hove were kicked out of the competition, promoting Chi to silver.

In the junior races, first blood of the afternoon went to the Hastings under-13 boys’ team, who stormed to victory on the third and final leg. In the girls' under-13 event, Chichester were clear winners from Brighton & Hove, with Lewes taking third place.

The under-15 races were also held together, with Worthing establishing a good lead on the opening leg and romping home well clear of Crawley and Lewes to take the boys title while Brighton & Hove came through on the third leg to win the girls' race.

The senior, veterans and under-17 races were held together and the senior women’s race saw a convincing victory for the Arena 80 team, who led from start to finish with Haywards Heath in second place and Crawley third. Chichester won the under-17 ladies title from Crawley and Brighton & Hove while Brighton & Hove won the under-17 men's title from Chichester and Crawley.

DARTS: Graeme Dutton produced two man of the match displays - but it was not enough to fire Friary Arms to consecutive wins in week three and four of the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out darts league.

CHICHESTER RFC hope a trip to secondbottom Gravesend will be the perfect tonic after the Blues slumped to their first loss of the campaign.

Scott Ashley's side have been dominant all year, winning four on the trot on their return to Division One South.

But that run was halted abruptly with the visit of Cobham to Oaklands Park, the Surrey side coming out 41-27 winners.

After taking the lead in the second half thanks to dominant forward play, Chi began to get more adventurous - something that would ultimately cost them, with Cobham scoring two tries and a conversion to take them to victory.

That defeat sees Chi slip to third, level on points with CS Rugby and four points behind unbeaten leaders Medway.

The Blues now head to the Kent side of the Thames tomorrow (2.30pm) looking to find their winning stride once again.

Speaking after the defeat, club spokesman

Roger Gould said: "As they did in 2014, Cobham beat Chi by using fast and effective counter attacks against a vulnerable defence in open play.

"Chi had much more possession and territory but their tackling was poor and the visitors took full advantage, three of their tries coming from Route One breaks."

After falling behind to an early try, left winger Ben Robson touched down for a try at corner to level the score at 7-7.

A Henry Anscombe penalty and five-pointer from Charlie Wallace added to the Blues tally.

But mistakes cost them dear, with the visitors scoring twice more from breakaways to go in at the break 24-17 up After the restart, the Blues meant business and it wasn't long before Wallace crashed over for his second of the day. Then Tom Belcher dived over to put them 27-24 in front.

But Chi fell apart, letting Cobham take charge, which ultimately cost the home side even a losing bonus point.

--RUGBY: Bognor RFC will be looking to recover quickly after losing a closefought encounter with United Services Portsmouth.

The Hampshire Avenue side welcome fourth-place Fordingbridge tomorrow (3pm) eager to show they are a match for the top teams in Hampshire One. Last weekend's narrow 19-12 defeat at Burnaby Road was Bognor's second of the season and leaves them third, six points behind leaders Millbrook.

They will be looking to close that gap against the visitors from the New Forest who have won two and lost one of their opening three fixtures.

Bognor could have secured more than a losing bonus point from their trip to Portsmouth.

After dominating the early exchanges, it was the home side that took the lead.

Pat Gains levelled things up, finishing superbly in the corner after some fine work from Bognor skipper Shane Stevens.

But two more US tries before the break sent them in 19-5 up at the break. Flying winger Chris Clare ensured the deficit was reduced, beating four men before a penalty try was awarded.

Lions eye up back-to-back wins in rollercoaster season

Undefeated Sids urged on SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce believes his young side can compete with the best after taking their unbeaten league start into October.

The Green and Golds suffered a major setback in the off-season when they were denied promotion to SCFL Division One because of administrative errors.

But, undeterred, Pearce and his side have continued to make progress on and off the pitch. Despite a number of injuries to some older heads, the Sids' young side have proved to be more than a match against more experienced opponents.

A 2-0 win over SCFL Division two league leaders Jarvis Brook last weekend means Pearce's side sit fifth, three points off top spot. Pearce believes recent results have shown that his team are ahead of where they were this time last year.

He told the Post: "We've been doing OK to be fair, we've had a couple of draws in our first eight games but we're still unbeaten going into October, which can't be bad.

"If you look at how we did last season, we have picked up points this time round where we didn't last term.

"That's pleasing. As for Saturday, all went quite well, which was down to hard work and the lads carrying out instructions."

After a tense and goalless first half, strikes from Callum Dowdell and Nehniah McKenley-Burke secured all three points for Sids against the side from Crowborough.

Pearce said: "They are a good side, Jarvis Brook. They are one of about three or four that are really decent sides in the division and they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the year. But it is no good beating them and not picking up points against some of the other teams."

Next up is a trip to basement team Ferring tomorrow (3pm), who have won just once in a season and a half.

And Pearce urged his side not to be complacent against a team who he claims are 'much improved'. He said: "They have some good ex-county league players so they will be no pushovers.

"We will go there not to lose. If we get one or two back from injury, that will make us stronger. Saturday proved they can compete with the best in the division."

PAGHAM'S search for consistency continues as the Lions followed up one of the poorest performances of the season with a convincing cup win.

The young squad at Nyetimber Lane have made great strides in recent months under the joint direction of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds. But they have failed to string together a series of positive results, chalking up four wins and four defeats in the SCFL Premier so far.

The up and down season continued last weekend when there were no excuses from the Lions after they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to bottom side Arundel.

That was followed up by a convincing 4-0 victory over SCFL Division One side Seaford in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup, with Callum Overton and Joe Kilhams both netting a brace.

Next up is a trip to Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (3pm) before a visit from Lancing on Tuesday (7.30pm). After netting eight times in the past three matches and conceeding only three, the Lions will be aiming for backto-back wins for only the second time this season.

Chi fly but Selsey's run ends Ne

CHICHESTER City have rocketed to the top of the table after firing in a remarkable 23 goals in just six games.

After a less than convincing start to the SCFL Premier season, Miles Rutherford's side have found their stride going the month of September unbeaten.

The major factor in the purple patch was their attacking potency, with the Lillywhites averaging nearly four goals a game.

That run was continued last weekend when Chi defeated Littlehampton Town 3-0 away, Scott Jones scoring twice to take his tally to 12

in his past six matches and 14 for the season.

Ben Pashley scored the third late on.

The victory took Rutherford's team to the summit with a goal difference of plus 18, albeit with other sides having a game in hand.

But the mood was dampened in midweek when Chi lost in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup to Haywards Heath Town.

Next up for the Lillywhites is a home match against Horsham YMCA tomorrow (3pm) before a trip to Loxwood on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Elsewhere, Selsey's unbeaten start to the SCFL Division One campaign was ended by Ringmer at the Bunn Leisure Stadium on Saturday.

Steve Bailey's young side have been in fine form so far this campaign, winning six and drawing once in their opening seven matches.

But the unbeaten run was brought to a rather tame end last weekend when mid-table Ringmer defeated the Blues 2-0.

Selsey managed to bounce back in midweek, winning through in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup with a 4-2 extra-time victory over Langney Wanderers.

Goals from Ciaran McGreal, Morgan Forry and Jake Goulding (2) sealed passage to the next round. Tomorrow sees the Blues return to league action as they travel to Mile Oak (3pm), looking to get their league campaign back on track.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham's rise up the table continues. The Robins bounced their way up to fourth after a third win in a row at home to Montpelier Villa last weekend.

Strikes from Grant Radmore (2) and Callum Coker secured the win for Gary Lines' side which sets up a trip to second-place Jarvis Brook nicely.

With Bosham just three points off top spot and momentum with the Walton Lane side, they are well-placed to set up a repeat of last season's title win.

City in seven heaven before grudge match CHICHESTER City Ladies will be out for revenge against Lewes when the Sussex rivals go toe to toe again this weekend.

The Rookettes took the spoils a fortnight ago when they beat Matt Wright's side at Oaklands Park.

But, buoyed from a dramatic 7-4 victory at Swindon Town last weekend, Chi make the trip to The Dripping Pan on Sunday (2pm) full of confidence and keen to seal back-to-back victories in the FA Women's Premier League South.

The Green and Whites started brightly against a young Swindon side.

They took the lead when Lauren Cheshire fired in a corner from the right and Charley Wilson-Blakely rose strongly to head home

near the back post.

With almost half an hour gone, Chi doubled their lead, with Holly Wride grabbing her first goal of the season after overcoming a knee injury.

Wilson-Blakely added a third before the break, hitting an unstoppable shot home from 30 yards before Cherelle Khassal rounded off a one-on-one to make it four.

The Robins pulled one back before the half was out but any hopes of a comeback were dented when Wilson-Blakely netted her hattrick just after the restart.

Swindon replied with three goals of their own, to make it a nailbiting final few minutes for Chi until 16-year-old substitute, Alex Collingham and Khassal rounded off the rout.

ROCKS sharpshooter Ollie Pearce has revealed the secret to his deadly form - the support of his team-mates and a gruelling fitness regime.

The striker continued his fine spell last weekend, netting a brace in the 2-0 FA Cup third preliminary round win against Eastbourne Borough.

That took Pearce's tally to seven in 11 matches so far - but the son of former Rocks' legend Robbie says he has his teammates to thank for his blistering start to life in National League South.

With a tricky match against fifth-placed Dartford to come tomorrow, the striker hopes the Rocks can use the momentum in the cup to come good after a run of eight league games without a win.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "We got off to a good start but the last few weeks has been more difficult. We knew it wasn’t all going to be plain sailing but we've had a good result in the FA Cup and now we're looking to kick on up the table."

The Rocks' dip in form coincided with injuries to Pearce and a number of other firstteam players.

That saw Bognor slip from fifth to their current spot of 18th, just two places about the relegation zone.

But, with those players now returning to full fitness, Pearce hopes to carry on his impressive goal-scoring form - something he unselfishly

puts down to his team-mates.

He said: "As a team, we are a lot fitter this year than last, which means we are creating more chances through a lot of different channels. If we are getting five chances a game then I am more likely to score.

"At the same time we have come up against some big teams this year who go forward early and are very clinical. So, even if we go two up, we know they will put pressure on us."

As if to prove how fit he and the rest of the team are, Pearce marked his return to the starting line-up against Gloucester City by lifting up his top to reveal the results of the hard work.

He jokes: "That was a little bit of banter with Dabba [coach Darin Killpartrick] after I was out for a few weeks!"

Pearce will be hoping to take that goalscoring form into tomorrow’s match against Dartford, a team who have netted the most and have the biggest goal difference of any side in the National South. Then next Saturday it is on to a tie against league rivals Oxford City in the FA Cup where a victory would take the Rocks into the first round proper.

Pearce said: "The draw could have been lot worse as they [Oxford] are a team very similar to us in terms of league position at this stage of the season. But the match at Dartford is very much our focus. We will all be concentrating on that and then we will think about the cup."

Team as happy as ever - Pearce IT'S SOMETHING that managers at all levels continually search for. But it seems like the Rocks genuinely have that ever-elusive magic dust known as team spirit.

Such closeness has been central to Bognor's rise up the non-league pyramid in recent years. And it is the reason why, despite some fans pointing fingers elsewhere, the players themselves took full responsibility after the team went seven games without a win.

It is also why the players celebrate goals with a collective group hug and ear to ear smiles this is not forced ecstasy; it is genuine and can only serve the Rocks well moving forward.

Speaking this week after the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Eastbourne Borough, striker Ollie Pearce, who scored twice in the win over the Sports, said: "We're as happy as we've ever been. It's a good changing room to be in - it's always bubbling and lively but serious when it needs to be.

"We know a lot of fans were getting on the back of the management but you can’t put the blame on one person. We've had injuries, we've been unlucky and perhaps we've been sloppy at times. But there’s no change in the mood of the camp and we're all working to get as high as we can in the league."

MOST of you will know that I'm writing this struggling with a shoulder injury.

Firstly, thank you to all the Rocks fans who have wished me well after I suffered the injury against Gloucester City.

It is what it is. It is not ideal, but it seems to be on the mend. I think the word I use is frustrating.

It's not something that I am used to. I've been asked if I remember much of what went on after I suffered the fall.

Once I got injured, then I was taken off and was waiting in the car park for an ambulance that never came.

I heard we went two up, which was well deserved. Even for the 20 minutes I was on the pitch, I felt we were the better side - we had a lot of the ball in their box and a number of chances but we didn't score.

I did feel that once we got one or two up that should have been that and all three points won.

But, naturally, when you are on a poor run and have not won for a while, things do not always go that way.

As the match went on, we invited on the pressure until they equalised late on. Although it was not a bad point, it is two points dropped.

As for me, well I was in the car park with a dislocated shoulder which was still out of the socket. I couldn't move due to excruciating pain. When we spoke to the paramedics again, we heard they had 17 outstanding calls so I was taken to hospital by car.

It took 15 minutes in the car to the hospital in Chi and, with all the bumps on the way, I've never been in worse pain.

When I got there, I was in and out in about 40 minutes. They told me that nothing was broken and then, within five minutes, two hospital staff had forced the shoulder back in and told me to rest it up for six to eight weeks.

I've been lucky as I've not had too many serious injuries before. I had a issue with my right shoulder which put me out for four weeks once and some

ankle ligament damage but on the whole I've been OK. At the moment I can't train at all. I can't run, swim or cycle, I can't do anything. I just have to rest but, in a couple of weeks, when the sling comes off, I'll be able to do some light running and lighter training sessions I do miss it - you wouldn't think I would, but once I missed one session I was itching to get playing again.

I did manage to get to Eastbourne, though, and sat on the bench for the match.

That was one of those games where there was no pressure on us and no one expected us to win. To be fair to Ollie, he worked his socks off and deserved the two goals.

I must say I thought Tommy Block, who was deputising because of injuries, marshalled the midfield well too. In general, it looked like we wanted it more and had much more quality in all areas.

Even when Sami got injured and Corey came on, there were no worries. It was just a mature performance. I was sat next to Doug Tuck on the bench and we were both saying how relaxed we were, which is quite rare with ten minutes to go in the cup.

Next up is Oxford City away.

Ideally it would have been at home but it's a winnable game against a side in our division. We will turn up with right mentality and hopefully get the win before a dream tie with Pompey in the next round!

First, though, is the trip to Dartford, a side who we know well from back in the Ryman League days.

They will be very physical and, looking at their league position, they are doing very well. But everyone can beat everyone in this division. So as long as we have the right attitude who knows?

As for myself, I'm concentrating on not doing anything too soon. I would like to be back for the first round of the FA Cup because I've never played in it.
