New group to fight housing CAMPAIGNERS have formed a new group to fight thousands of planned homes in North Bersted. Some 50 supporters of the Bersted & Aldwick Development Destroying Environment & Agricultural Land group (BAD DEAL) made their views clear at its first publicity event, pictured above. The group has brought together residents of North Bersted, West Meads and Pagham to battle against the
proposals for 2,500 homes on farmland in Chalcraft Lane. Those who attended the event were a mixture of long-standing residents and those who had recently moved to the area. Dave Weller, 69, of Chalcraft Lane, said: “I’ve been here since I was four years old and I’ve seen the area change beyond recognition. “All of Rowan Way, Fairlands, West
Meads and Stroud Green – none of it was here. Chalcraft Lane was a lane then. Now, it’s going to be the local version of the M3. “We wait ten minutes to get out of our drive now and we can only turn left. We don’t even think about turning right.” His wife, Sue Weller, 68, said: “I don’t see how they can allow all these houses with all the traffic that will be created. It’s bad enough now. We see it back up
every day.” The group’s leaders – Bersted parish councillor Martin Lury is the chairman – will be keeping close ties with PAGAM’s members and their fight against what could be 1,000-plus homes in their area just across the parish boundary. The sites have been earmarked by Arun District Council in its latest local plan land use blueprint. This will be Turn to page five
