Town peer's call for rail talks LABOUR’S leading peer has pledged to raise the ongoing Southern rail strikes in the House of Lords this month. Bognor Regis resident Baroness Smith of Basildon said the government had to hold talks to solve the long-running dispute. Today sees the latest of the series of strikes by RMT members about the issue of driver-only operated trains. They will also walk out next Monday.

Both days will see two services from Bognor Regis to Littlehampton cancelled – at 5.49am and 7.36am – and the 6.35am service in the opposite direction. They are among 52 services which have been scrapped on both days. But Southern said 90 per cent of its trains would run normally. Baroness Smith said: “The impact of these strikes should not be underestimated. I’ve been told about people

who’ve had to change their hours at work, others who’ve changed their work patterns and some who have moved. “I intend to raise the issue in the Lords calling on the government to get involved. The government has to take the responsibility and see what can be done to finally resolve this problem. “People are getting pretty fed up with what is happening. I want to see the local MPs also helping settle this problem.

“The longer it goes on, the harder it will be to resolve – and we can’t go on like this.” The dispute between the RMT members saw its first walk-out in April, 2016. They are unhappy with the insistence of Southern’s owner, Govia, to get rid of the compulsory presence of guards on its services. The staff have been transferred from Turn to page five
