Planning inspector Mark Dakeyne will take charge of the remaining enquiry into plans for thousands of homes in the two areas.

Ian conquers tide for charity swim DISABLED Ian Turner beat the odds with his swim off Pagham.

Ian swam just under a mile at high tide to the wartime remains of the Mulberry Harbour off the beach to raise money for the hospital which cares for his grandson.

He hopes to have raised at least £2,000 for Moorfields Eye Hospital in London with his determined effort in the water.

"I use my arms all the time when I am swimming, because I can't use my legs, but I was determined to finish the swim.

"It took me about two hours. The swell kept pushing me one way and, the next thing I knew, I was heading towards Selsey," he said.

"So many people had given so much money that I didn't want to let them down.

"When I got to the Mulberry Harbour, the swell and the tide were pushing me one way all the time. I tried so hard to get to the wreck but I was swimming backwards.

"So, I reached a line parallel to the post, a few yards away, and called that the end," he said.

The conditions saw Ian, who had polio as a boy, returned to the beach in a safety boat. He said: "I would have been an absolute fool to have swum back. There was a crowd of about 200 people cheering when I got back to the beach.

"But I'm not the hero. The heroes are the children I see at the hospital. They are always so cheerful.

"I think of all the conditions the people who are there have got and it makes me feel modest."

Ian, 69, of St Thomas Drive, had help with

his swim from Pagham Yacht Club and Bognor Regis Hotham Rotary Club.

He was accompanied by a surfboarder, a kayaker and a couple of other boats sailed

by Pagham Yacht Club members as well as the safety boat for his extraordinary swim last Wednesday evening.

He backed Moorfields Hospital because his grandson, seven-year-old Sydney, has Nance Horan Syndrome. It causes severe sight problems and needs ongoing treatment. Last autumn saw former police officer Ian raise £2,400 for the hospital wheeling himself in his wheelchair four miles from Pagham to Bognor Regis.

After Ian left the police service in 1997, he bought a sheep farm in South Wales and became a shepherd for a few years.

But the long-term effects of polio caused him to retire and move to Pagham.

His legs are in callipers and he has undergone several major operations on them in the past ten years.

He faces further major surgery. It could include the amputation of his right leg.

But that has not lessened his desire to help the hospital's Richard Desmond Children's Unit.

"Sydney has had about 30 operations there," he said. "I just felt I could do something to help them.

"I'm a social member at Pagham Yacht Club and I've sat there looking out at the post which marks the site of the Mulberry Harbour and got this idea about what I would try to do.

"The yacht club and the Rotary club have backed me all the way."

Proposals by Network Rail to build new railway footbridge RAILWAY officials are to replace an 'eyesore' footbridge over the Bognor Regis branch line.

Network Rail has submitted prior notification of the works for the bridge which links Ivy Lane with Highcroft Avenue. A statement with the notification to Arun District Council says: "The works are planned to commence on October 16, 2017, and if not, then December 2017.

"Ivy Lane footbridge is a precast concrete bridge with a stepped spaln and stepped access. The structure has areas of heavy spalling (splitting) and exposed reinforcement along

with multiple areas where concrete repairs have been undertaken. Due to its condition, it has been classified as life expired." The new bridge will be designed to last 120 years.

Arun planning officer Simon Davis has backed the scheme. He says in his report: "The existing bridge is considered to have a utilitarian and almost brutalist design. It is considered to be somewhat of an eyesore.

"The proposed replacement bridge has a similar functional design...this is not considered to materially worse any existing harm to the amenities of the local area."

New minibus is a big comfort for its users

The 14-seat vehicle boasts heating, air conditioning and a wheelchair ramp unlike its predecessor - and has already proved a hit with those who rely on its regular trips arranged by Pagham and District Residents' Association.

Weekly passenger George Marler, 89, of Pagham, said: "It's a lovely bus. There's plenty of room on it for my mobility aid and my shopping.

"The volunteers on the minibus always help me on and off with my shopping."

Mr Marler has been a regular on the Friday trips to Morrisons in Bognor Regis town centre and to Lidl out of town once a month for the past four years.

One of his neighbours, Frances Ireland, 74, said: "I don't use the minibus for

shopping but I have been on the old one for the special outings. I look forward to going on this one to Winchester.

"We are all really grateful for the efforts the volunteers put in to help us. Being able to use the minibus enables people to remain independent for longer."

They were among some 30 association members at an official unveiling ceremony as part of Sunday's Pagham on Parade.

The Peugeot bus cost the association just under £39,000 and is the group's sixth in its 50 year history. The previous vehicle was 11 years old and getting unreliable and expensive to maintain.

It took the association about three years to research a replacement and obtain grants from West Sussex County Council, the Sussex Community Foundation and the West Sussex Travel Society to add to its reserves. A £4,500 bequest from a long-

standing user of the service, Eirwen Wood, was also gratefully received and has been acknowledged with a brass plaque in her memory inside the bus.

Ann Rowles, the association's chairman, said: "I am very proud to be chairman of such a successful group and the team who run all the functions and I hope the association will continue to thrive for many years to come."

The vehicle was delivered sooner than expected and has been used for two months. It also used for transport by seven other groups such as Pagham Lunch Club and Pagham Chestnuts Club.

In all, the minibus will transport more than 2,500 residents' members a year and 1,500-plus extra passengers.

It makes 200 shopping trips annually, 50 other journeys for the association and at least 100 for other groups. *See page 11

LEONARDO da Vinci winner Sam Penny has ensured a brighter future for the International Bognor Birdman.

Sam his donated his £1,000 prize money back to the organisers of the popular annual event.

His generosity means some of the outstanding bills from this month's staging can be paid, and will help the organising committee to be better able to start planning for next year.

Sam and his partner, Emily Neal, talked about the donation a few days after the announcement that the event was back on after a fundraising appeal.

He said: "When I heard it was going to be cancelled, I had already invested the money and time in to the event.

To keep the Birdman on, we thought it was worth it to forgo the £1,000 prize money."

Joint organiser Jim Brooks said: "Sam’s unselfish offer is very much appreciated."

As reported, Birdman was initially cancelled by the organisers because of a lack of funds - until community backing and sustainable tissue paper maker Cheeky Panda saved the day.

Emily said: "When Sam first phoned me to say the Birdman had been cancelled he was really upset. He said, 'What am I going to do with my machine now? I'm going to have to take it to the tip.' It was then that we thought

we couldn't let this happen. We had to do everything we could to keep the Birdman running."

"We did a lot on social media with the help of others. A page was set up called: Make Bognor Birdman Happen.

"We also contacted all the local businesses and raised £4,000 in just one day. We then contacted BBC South Today who ran a piece on Sam and the event.

"It was from that profile that Cheeky Panda found out and got involved."

The company's involvement ensured the ever-popular event was saved.

Mr Brooks said: " We were delighted with the response from local residents and businesses, and of course Cheeky Panda, which allowed the event to go ahead.

"However, a vital part of reversing our decision to cancel was not just financial, but also the offers received of ‘free’ medical support, boats, scaffold etc.

"Whilst these offers were made with good intent, once the complexity of what was required, particularly with regard to the safe running of the event, was realised, these offers had to be declined.

"As a result, the directors had to rebook completely new professional suppliers at a much greater cost than originally planned."

` Attempted rape EXTRA police patrols have taken place around Bognor Regis town centre after an attempted rape.

The additional presence follows the attack on a 22-year-old woman in Ockley Road.

Detectives who are investigating the incident around 11.30pm last Wednesday have appealed for help in tracing the offender.

Detective Sergeant Emma Dumbrell said: "We believe this to have been an isolated, opportunistic attack which was nevertheless extremely frightening for the victim.

"Extra patrols and house-to-house enquiries are being carried out in the area with the aim of detaining the man responsible as soon as possible.

"To that end, any information about this incident is vital and I would urge any witnesses to come forward without delay."

She would particularly lile to talk to, and thank, another woman who went to the aid of the victim. She is believed to be called Ellie and had coppercoloured hair worn with a fringe.

They would also like to speak to taxi drivers with dash cams or anyone with CCTV footage which might show what happened or might have seen suspicious activity in the High Street, Canada Grove and Ockley Road area.

The incident saw the victim grabbed by a man and thrown to the ground as she walked home.

She was left extremely distressed and with scratches and bruises to her wrists, arms and knees.

The offender is believed to have been a white man who ran off towards Linden Road.

New housing junction fears EXTRA traffic from planned housing in Climping could cause more accidents at a notorious junctions, councillors were warned yesterday.

Forecasts have predicted a total of 1,509 two-way vehicle trips every 12 hours from the proposal of up to 300 homes on land west of Church Lane and south of Horsemere Green Lane, close to Comet Corner on the A259.

During the morning and afternoon peak periods, this would amount to an extra 172 two-way trips, members of Arun District Council's development control committee were told as they were recommended to approve the scheme.

But councils in Climping, Middleton and Littlehampton combined with almost 100 residents to object to the proposals by Mulgrave Properties for up to 300 homes.

Middleton Parish Council said it was concerned about the increase in traffic along the A259, especially with regard to Comet Corner junction. "(The) A259 and Comet Corner are at risk of further serious accidents with continued pressure by other housing planning applications in neighbouring parishes," it stated.

It said a new roundabout at the junction would not be enough to cope with the additional vehicles generated by the proposed houses.

Its members also wanted money to be paid by Mulgrave Properties towards public services to be pooled to go towards traffic lights at Comet Corner.

Climping Parish Council stated: "The

proposal will add directly to existing local road congestion along Church Lane and Yapton Road and the A259, and to the associated road safety issues.

"The development is essentially a dormitory housing estate from which residents will have to commute to places of employment and the main amenities of the district."

For Littlehampton Town Council, the affect on the area's roads was also the primary concern.

It stated: the"The development should be considered in the context of other developments along the A259 corridor and increase in traffic since the Felpham bypass opened."

Those concerns were shared by the residents who protested against the plans on the 27 hectare farmland site.

A host of other objections about the loss of countryside and top grade farmland was also made by the parish councillors in Climping.

But a report by Ms Potts to the development control committee stated the roads would be able to cope with the extra vehicles if work such a roundabout at the A259/Church Lane junction was funded by the developer.

"Overall, the development would deliver a strategic improvement to the highways infrastructure which would mitigate its traffic impacts and have wider benefits as it improves the existing congestion and provides a solution which is 'future proof' in relation to proposed growth in the area," she added.

Biggest kite festival promises to provide plenty of aerial action FINAL plans have been made for the biggest kite festival in Bognor Regis.

The third of the annual celebrations of the aerial attractions is being staged over three days for the first time.

One of the organisers, Jan Malpas, said: "There will be many big kites being flown to make for a wonderful free three day event."

The festival is taking place at West Park on the seafront. Tomorrow's opening day sees it being held from 10.30am9pm, the hours are 10.30am-8.30pm on Sunday and 10.30am-5pm on bank holiday Monday.

The final day will also see the first Great Bognor Bake-Off take place with The Bearded Bakers as the judges.

Prizes are being offered in three classes for adults and one for children classic Victoria sandwich, novelty cake, granny knows best and children's cup cake trio.

Entries must be taken to the marquee by 11am on Monday. The winners will be announced on the main stage at 3pm and the entries and plates must be collected by 5pm.

"There will also be plenty of other activities taking place on the ground during the festival," said Jan. "There is a kite making workshop which caters for big and little kids, food, bar, live music, a children's entertainer on Saturday and Sunday and craft and community stalls."

Rugby legends to get on their bikes in Bognor for ex-player

One-time England and Harlequins regulars like Will Carling, John Olver, Mick Skinner and Peter Winterbottom will be showing their support for their ex team-mate Paul Curtis.

Paul, 58, a former England prop, became a quadriplegic after he hit a tree on a cycle ride in the Welsh valleys near his home in Penclawdd on the Gower peninsula nearly a year ago. He broke his neck, damaged his spinal cord, right lung and diaphragm.

He is in a rehabilitation centre after having spent months in a Cardiff hospital. Phil Mead, Bognor Rugby Club's president, said: "This is where Paul Curtis started his career as a 14-year-old.

He represented his country while still playing at Bognor, so we are delighted to be hosting the start of this great ride."

Players from throughout Paul's career, from his early days as a teenager at Bognor, through Rosslyn Park, Harlequins and Middlesex, as well as the 1980s England u-23 team, are turning out to help 'Curto' as the prop was fondly known.

Those on the starting line will also include 16 players from Penclawdd Rugby Club in Paul's adopted homeland of Wales. He moved there after he married his Welsh love, Rhian, and swapped English rugby pitches to coaching lads at school and club level at Penclawdd RFC. The ride is being organised by former Quins and England player Winterbottom.

Other players and team-mates backing the fundraising include Brian Moore and Dick Best, who famously coached Quins, England and the British and Irish Lions.

Best said: "The rugby family is vast and, despite the rivalry and competition, on occasions like this it's a community that is proud to help its own."

The night before the ride, Bognor Rugby Club is hosting an evening with Paul's rugby friends. Those attending will include Moore and Winterbottom.

The timetable for the enquiry agreed by Mr Dakeyne. This will see the hearing take place at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton from September 19-21 and September 26-29.

Mr Dakeyne told Arun when he was appointed: "I would envisage that hearings would take place on Tuesday-Thursday during both weeks although there is the possibility of sitting on Friday, September 29, if necessary.

"I understand the council consider that 6-7 days will allow sufficient time for the resumed hearings."

Among the crucial days for the Bognor Regis is September 26 when the strategic housing allocations are considered.

Matters which Mr Dalkeyne has highlighted include the constraints on housing caused by the environmental status of Pagham Harbour, specific needs for schools, sustainable transport links and the phasing of land for jobs in the west of Bersted scheme.

It will be the turn of the thousands of homes envisaged for Barnham/Eastergate/Westergate to come under the microscope on September 27 On September 20, Arun's policies for economic growth and sites for jobs will be examined.

New homes handover FAMILIES in need of homes will soon be moving into new council houses in Bognor Regis town centre.

The two four-bedroomed houses will be added to Arun District Counci's housing stock and let to people on its housing waiting list.

They will help to replace some of the homes which the council has sold under Right to Buy. Cllr Trevor Bence, Arun's cabinet member for residential services, said: "This is the second release of council houses being built in Arun in 28 years and continues the programme to see 33 new homes added to the council's property portfolio over the next two years.

"I am delighted that this development is now complete and ready to provide homes for Arun residents."

Cllr Bence, pictured below second left, was joined at the handover by Craig Durman, the head of housing at Brymor Group, Arun's director of services Philippa Dart, Brian Pople, the group head of residential services at the council and its chief

executive, Nigel Lynn.

The properties are sited off Clarence Road, close to the Glenlogie property, and were built by Brymor Construction.

Mr Durman said: "The complex nature of the site demonstrates the district council's promise to provide modern living accommodation for now and in the future.

"The design of the units maximises the available land for development and the high-quality finish is testament to the commitment of the management team here at Brymor, and also that of our supply chain partners."

Business park plan unveiled FORMAL proposals have been unveiled for the creation of up to a thousand jobs at a North Bersted business park.

Landlink Estates has submitted a planning application to use the Salt Box site to the west of the A29 Shripney Road for commercial development.

As revealed in the Bognor Regis Post earlier this month, the company has lined up Warburtons the bakers to occupy a warehouse and distribution depot on part of the scheme. This is expected to be the base for 70 vehicles if it is approved. Detailed planning permission is being sought by Landlink Estates for this section of the scheme.

The rest of the 12-hectare open farmland location is covered by an outline application to establish the principle of development for a hotel of up to 80 rooms and a pub/restaurant, two drive thru restaurants, a gym and two distribution warehouses.

Two distribution businesses, which could be sub-divided to create premises for smaller businesses, have also been included in the application.

No occupiers have yet been stated for the rest of the premises.

A statement with the application, submitted by Paul Hanson, of Landlink Estates, says the scheme reflects the long-standing aspirations of Arun District Council for the land to be used to create employment.

"The layout and design of the phased proposals meets the key design objectives to create a well integrated mixed use scheme in a commercially viable and practical way which is

sensitive to the site's surrounding and respects the character of the local area," he states. "Taller buildings are located at the entrance designated as key locations, therefore giving the opportunity for the hotel, pub, drive thru restaurants and gym to be developed as marker buildings."

These buildings will be limited two commercial storeys, ranging between 10.5m and 13.5m high.

"Lower industrial units sit over the northern edge of the site screened by the village buffer, where views from Shripney village residential (areas) required a more sensitive approach. Each site provides car parking facilities for cycles, motorcycles, small cars and heavy goods vehicles, in addition to service yard areas where needed," he adds.

"The resultant layout meets an established local need, complies with the aims of the local development order and will help reinforce Bognor Regis' independence as a thriving community in its own right."

Salt Box forms part of the Enterprise Bognor Regis area designated by Arun to provide jobs. It is one of three sites included in a draft local development put forward by the district council to encourage enterprise.

Bersted Parish Council has called for the development to be used to install the missing link in the Bognor Regis northern relief road to relieve congestion on Rowan Way. Its members have also stated their disappointment at the calibre of jobs which could be created at the site.

Gala line-up looks promising to provide plenty to enjoy AT LEAST 20 entries should ensure this weekend's Illuminations Gala lives up to its reputation as the loudest and brightest event in Bognor Regis.

The number of entries for Sunday night's parade is set to ensure a good night out for the thousands of people set to line the route.

The procession will start at 8.30pm from Silverston Avenue, next to West Park, and go along the seafront, Aldwick Road, West Street and Lennox Street before it re-joins the seafront. It will be led by the Horndean Marching Band.

Bognor Regis Seafront Lights has run the gala for 15 years. Its secretary,

Greg Burt, said more entries were still welcomed to join the usual flurry of those made at last minute.

"They can be accepted right up until the day before so there is still time to enter a float, pram, bicycle or walking group and be in with a chance to win one of the many trophies and cash prizes, totalling £275," he said.

The prizes will be presented at 10.15pm straight after a fireworks display from the pier at 10pm.

EXHIBITIONS are being held across the Bognor Regis Post area about the planned Arundel bypass.

Highways England open its consultation about the multi-million pound improvement on Tuesday.

Public comments are welcomed until October 16. Highways England says in a statement: "Highways England has committed to replacing the existing single carriageway road with a dual carriageway bypass, linking together the two existing dual carriageway sections.

"The options being presented aim to improve traffic flow, journey times, safety and accessibility, boost local economic growth and minimise the impact on the environment."

The next staffed exhibition will be from 2-8pm next Thursday at Arundel Town Hall. Others will be held in the town and in Littlehampton before one takes place from 2-8pm on October 5 at Fontwell Park Racecourse's premier grandstand.

An unstaffed exhibition where members of the public can view the exhibition boards and collect copies of the brochure and questionnaire will take place during usual opening hours from October 2-5 at Bognor Regis Town Hall.

The next week will see the exhibition will take place from 2-8pm on October 9 at Walberton Pavilion in The Street before it moves to Yapton Village Hall at the same times on October 11.

Its final staging will be held during the usual opening hours at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton.

Copies of the brochure and questionnaire will also be available at local and mobile libraries throughout the consultation period.

Lynne's bear facts of life

` Seafront play area VIEWS of Bognor Regis area residents are being sought about a proposed seafront play area.

Arun District Council is due to install the site and is keen to know opinions about which equipment it should contain.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "There is a lot of support for children's play facilities on the seafront in Bognor Regis.

"But we would like to know what local people want to see included.

"By taking part in the survey, you can give us your opinion on the range of equipment and the theme that you would like to see in the play area."

The online survey will open next Tuesday and last until September 25. It can be seen at arun.gov.uk/ brseafrontplay A survey in 2013 showed 60 per cent of respondents said they would like to see activities for young children on the town's seafront.

This led to the creation of the Beach on the Beach sand play area. It has proved extremely popular since it opened in 2015 and was extended last year.

The new equipped play area is the next phase to meet the requests for more to do. It will be sited next to the Beach on the Beach.

Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins said: "This is a great initiative and one I fully support as part of the seafront strategy and the regeneration of Bognor Regis."

Open event shows off pond's delights IMPROVEMENTS to Aldwick's duck pond have been proudly put on show.

The changes to the rural beauty spot amid the houses were admitted by dozens of people at the latest open day staged by Aldwick Preservation Society.

The society was formed 40 years to keep the pond when it was threatened as part of a road scheme.

Recent years have seen its work stepped up to ensure the pond is a fitting home to its some 60 ducks and various fish species. Recent work included repairs to the pond's banks and its island. It was led by Phil Sargent and Terry Reeve. West Sussex County Council also funded a drainage improvement scheme.

Preservation society chairman Paul Bignell said: "We've had 60-70 people come along so far in the two hours we've been here.

"Most of them are people who are here

for the first time, which is what this event is all about.

"About 12 new members have signed up and we've got 800 members.

"So many people get a lot of pleasure out of visiting the pond that it makes all the work worthwhile.

"The local schools have walking buses here with their teachers and, every other week, some 20 people in wheelchairs visit here to enjoy sitting around the pond. It's a nice area and we are always looking for people to join us to help out."

Among those who went along to the open day last Saturday was Aldwick Felds resident Jan Brockhurst.

She said: "It's been a few years since I was here with my grandchildren. There's a lot more ducks than I thought there was going to be and I like the running water.

It makes a big difference and makes the pond cleaner than it used to be."

LIFE coach Lynne Healy chose a Bognor Regis beauty spot to publicise her confidence-boosting teddy bear.

Lynne has created the Birdham Bear with the aim of building on children's self esteem.

She knitted the bear, having been inspired after getting involved with her local knitting group. She has since had a book published about the character and took the bear to Hotham Park to raise awareness of its existence.

Birdham resident Lynne said: "I moved to this area two and a half years ago and started delivering my own personal development programme for young mums.

"As the women were doing the programme, they said it was really helping their children.

"That's no surprise because if you help the mum out, they pass it on to their children.

"So I thought about whether we could educate our children so that their sense of self is so strong they have the resilience to hit their teenage years and adulthood."

From then on, Lynne knitted the bear, wrote the story, found an illustrator and published the book.

She is hoping she can help children in and around the area as they get older.

"I started writing this story and I loved it," she added.

"What I realised as I wrote it was that there was a real theme about uniqueness and what makes you unique.

"I just took a leap of faith. It's been a great journey of discovery for me."

Lynne is also working on a Christmas book. She hopes the Birdham Bear can go on to become famous around the county.

"The message is that each and every one of us is unique," Lynne adds.

"I want children to have a series of stories that might encourage them to talk more about how they engage with the world and what the reality of the world is and to have some self-belief."

Electric motoring sparks interest among crowds at annual event E-CAR fan Brian Moyler put the future of motoring on show at the latest Pagham on Parade.

Mr Moyler displayed his new BMW i3 electric car amid the historic vehicles at the annual community celebration.

The 2017-registered car was the latest vehicle to be included in the event's 13year history. And Mr Moyler said it had attracted a lot of attention amid the petrol heritage around it.

“People want to know all about it. They are always asking me questions and want to have a drive in it.

"This is the only car of its kind that I know of in the Bognor Regis area and I've only seen two in Chichester,” said the 80-year-old Pagham resident.

“It's so comfortable, quiet and easy to drive and it's almost crash proof. It tells you where you are going, will brake automatically if you get too close to anything and phones the police if you've had an accident," he said.

The car has an onboard generator which charges its engine for journeys of more than 150 miles which exceed the range of its electricity top-ups.

“It has a carbon fibre chassis. There's no steel, no rust and no maintenance,” he said. “There's no doubt this is the future of motoring. Manufacturers like Nissan and Ford are starting to make them.

"Once the cost comes down, then they will become very popular. Everyone knows pollution is getting worse. Petrol cars will be banned from places like London and Southampton. It seems like

a long way ahead but I don't think it's too far away.”

A few metres away was an equally rare car which represented the past of motoring. The 70-year-old Humber Super Snipe Mk 1 is one of only seven remaining vehicles of its kind in the world known to the Humber Car Club.

Owner Les Payne, 69, of Selsey, bought it three years ago from a Scottish museum.

“I love Rootes cars. They are solid, they drive so firmly on the road and they drive well,” he said, “and it's the way old cars used to be before they began to be mass manufactured. Although this one dates from 1947, they were made from 1938 and were wartime cars.

“They were used by the likes of Montgomery and Churchill back in the day and they were converted into armoured cars and staff cars.”

Also among the some 100 cars on display at Sunday's event were a 1934 Standard Twelve Saloon, a Ford Escort 1300L from June 1974, a 1933 Austin Seven two-seat tourer and a Ford Mustang 280 Convertible made in 1966.

Another feature of the day was a host of arena acts like Ballroom Blitz, with glam rock, steel drummers, a dog training club and line dancing.

The thousands of visitors to the site in and around Pagham Village Hall also had an array of stalls to browse Good causes represented included the Scouts, the RAFA branch in Bognor Regis, CancerWise, the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre in Sidlesham, Pagham Ponies and

the Pagham Flood Defence Trust.

PAGAM housing campaigners and their counterparts in North Bersted were also present to provide details on their fights.

The arena was the location as well for the traditional drumhead service of remembrance to continue an aspect of the day from its first year.

The Rev Mark Eminson, the vicar of St Thomas a'Becket Church in Pagham, said: “It's good to be part of what looks like another successful Pagham on Parade.

“It's important to pause and thank God for his blessings and to thank God for the community spirit so evident on a day like today – and to remember those killed or injured in various situations around the world. Our hearts go out to those killed in last week's Barcelona terrorist attack and the landslide in Sri Lanka.”

His comments were followed by the laying of a poppy wreath on the drumhead altar by Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall. “This is in memory of the people who have died or been maimed in wars, including the recent ones, and is from the people of Pagham,” he said.

Afterwards, he said the day had lived up to previous years when some £6,000 was donated to charities. He added: “The general concensus is that's been the best ever day. A lot of people have visited us and there will be a lot of money going to charities from the committee with a sum from the parish council."

` Fun in Felpham PLENTY of fun is in store in Felpham tomorrow.

The parish council expects its annual Fun on the Prom event on the seafront near Blakes Road is better than ever.

Organisers are hoping for better weather than the torrential rain which wiped out most of the activities last year.

The occasion, one of the highlights of Felpham's year, will start at 2pm and includes Punch and Judy shows, a children's entertainer, Owls About Town and donkey rides.

Every dog has its fun day HUNDREDS of breeds of dog were on show on Sunday for the annual Alphapet Fun Day and Dog Show.

Pets and their owners flocked to West Meads park to attend the show and help raise vital funds for animal charities.

Richard Edwards, a director at Alphapet Veterinary Clinics, said: "It's as busy today as it has been the previous years. This is our eighth show now and we do more and more each year.

"It started as something just for our clients as a tiny little show but it's proved to be more and more popular with people travelling down to attend. " The event was raising money for a national and a local charity - Hearing Dogs and Search Dogs Sussex.

There were also many other animalrelated charity stalls around the site helping raise funds through tombola’s, raffles, bric-a-brac and cake sales.

The main attraction of the event was the dog show with several categories open to all to enter. The classes consisted of best puppy (under a year), best veteran (over seven years), prettiest bitch, handsomest dog, most appealing scruff, most appealing eyes, waggiest tail, best rescue and best in show.

Participants lined up in the arena and judges did a tour to pick their favourites.

The category for most handsomest dog proved to be extremely popular with more than 70 entrants in all shapes and sizes.

Michael and Catherine Jones from North Bersted visited the fun day with their son of 20 months, Benjy, and fouryear-old rescue dog, Poppy.

Catherine said: "We came about two years ago. It's a really nice community event. It's great for Benjy to come and see all the animals. We entered Poppy

The day also had demonstrations of dog activities and fun games to try such as fastest recall, gundog scurry and temptation alley.

Another activity was the ever popular, dog agility where dogs are directed over several jumps and through tunnels to complete the course.

Plenty of family attractions on the day also included a bouncy castle, pets corner, second hand pet accessories and a homemade cake stall.

New to the show this year, was the Alphapet dog mascot, who was walking around throughout the day to meet and greet dogs and children. A competition was being run to the name the new member of the Alphapet team.

Alphapet Veterinary Clinics has three surgeries in Bognor Regis, Kingley Vale and Birdham and has treated over 80,000 animals. The Bognor Regis branch operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Richard added: "One of my favourite things about doing these events is the kick I get out of seeing all of the animals we have treated which then attend here.

"I've just been talking to some clients with an old greyhound. The dog came in as an emergency on the evening of our Christmas party. I was the vet on duty that night and I stayed up all night with the poor greyhound. The dog just kept on bleeding and bleeding. One year later, here he is, it's so lovely to see."

The total funds raised on the day amounted to £2,441.58. Donations to the charities can still be made at any of the three Alphapet Vetinary Clinics.

Pond in a Pot JUST because you have a small garden or outside space doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful water feature to admire. Not only is it possibly the lowest maintenance gardening there is, but it also provides a focal point and you can’t over water the plants.

There are several varieties of aquatic plants you can choose from, but you will only need a few - three is plenty for an 18inch or 24-inch tub or pot, so you still see plenty of open water.  Underwater plants – often called oxygenators, these grow entirely under water. They can be used in container water features but aren’t essential, however they do help in keeping algae at bay. The pretty Water Violet is a British native plant with white-mauve flowers that appear in May-June.  Floaters – their root system hangs down in the water and they are also good algae deterrents. They provide shade to the water and can have attractive flowers although many can’t

tolerate frost. Frogbit is also a British native plant, with small round pale green leaves and small white flowers from June-August. It drops down to the container base over the winter months.  Water Lilies – they have their root systems anchored at the bottom of the water feature whilst the leaves and flowers float on the top of the water. There are several dwarf varieties that are perfect for container water gardens. Hardy water lilies that can tolerate frost tend only to flower in the daytime. Rubra ia a miniature water-lily with small rounded leaves and slightly fragrant, cupped flowers that open deep rose-pink and then darken with age to deep red from June-September.

Pot ponds don’t have to be in full sun, there are a number of aquatic plants that do well in shaded areas, but you need remember that water lilies flower better if they get three to five hours of direct sunlight a day.

Choosing the right pot – for your garden

and for a successful water feature – is essential. If you are using a large sized terracotta pot then you will need to plug the drain hole with a rubber or cork stopper and pond sealant. Other water feature containers could be old Belfast basins and water troughs or half wooden barrels – they just need to be waterproof and leak free which is easy to achieve with a plastic liner. A darker interior works better as it reflects less light back into the water so looks deeper, and dark pots absorb more heat which is good in the spring for plant growth.

You can plant several types of aquatic plants in one container but if the plants you choose grow better at different water depths then plant them on a brick or small upturned clay pot in the water to raise them to the right level. Aquatic plants can be fast growers so may need thinning out from time to time.

For a real wow factor, put three pots or tubs together in an arrangement to create your very own, unique water garden and then just sit back and enjoy.

Blakefest to return with big names A STELLAR line-up of musicians, poets and other artists have been announced for a festival in Bognor Regis.

This year's Blakefest sees a variety of performers and artists gather at multiple venues in town across the weekend of September 16 and 17.

The annual festival explores the life and work of poet William Blake who resided in Felpham for three years, where he wrote his most famous work Jerusalem.

Alongside performances dedicated to his poetry will be music and verse from other genres to celebrate the arts.

Saturday's event is more poetryorientated with a multimedia project at Bognor Library that offers a 360 degree virtual tour of Blake's cottage.

Following this will be a guided walk with Irish poet Niall McDevitt who will discuss Blake's connection to the local area.

To end the day jazz-beat poet Michael Horovitz will be joined by other poets and musicians for an evening at The Regis School of Music.

The main Sunday event will be held at the Newtown Social Club. This will include musical performances from Gwyneth Herbert, David Devant and his Spirit Wife, Tymon Dogg and also local performers, Ruby and The Re-

Visions.

This day will intersperse the live music with performance poetry.

Festival director Rachel Searle hoped this could be Blakefest's most successful year.

She said: "This is a real jewel for Bognor Regis.

"We hope this is our most exciting, authentic Blakean festival to date,. It's already attracting international artists anxious to contribute.

"I am particularly moved that Britain’s most famous Blakean beat poet and jazz musician Michael Horovitz will be journeying down to Bognor Regis to share his music, passion and memories of the enormous influence of Blake's poetry on 1960s musical England.

"I am hoping that something of the vision and passion burning in this year's Blakefest will continue in Bognor Regis, long after the festival has finished.

"The profile and quality of the line-up and the generosity of the performers themselves guarantees that anyone longing for something a little bit different will be pleased they were there."

Tickets are £15 for the day or £25 for the whole weekend.

RESIDENTS around Bognor Regis and Chichester are being urged to think before they ditch batteries.

An increasing number of them are showing up in the county's household rubbish - they all present a fire risk.

Latest figures from the council show around 2,000 tonnes of small electrical items and 182 tonnes of batteries are being thrown into rubbish bins and householders in one year in West Sussex.

Blazes have been sparked by batteries or electrical goods over the years in refuse trucks and at West Sussex County Council's waste sites.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "Any battery has the potential to spark and it can happen so easily.

"They only need to be damaged or crushed in the truck that collects your waste or your recycling, or at the sites where we process waste."

It was easy for batteries to catch fire in recycling trucks full of dry materials like paper and card.

"It doesn't take much - a piece of foil, a staple, even the metal floor of the truck. They can all cause a battery to short and, of course, batteries contain hazardous heavy metals which need to be dealt with properly," Cllr Urquhart added.

The situation has prompted the county's waste and recycling contractors to raise their concerns to the county council.

This was done through the battery bins at household waste recycling sites. All the major supermarkets also offer battery recycling points.

Number grades add up for Felpham pupils A NEW grading system didn't faze Felpham Community College students as their GCSE results placed the school in the top 20 per cent nationally for students' progress.

With a change in gradings for subjects maths, English language and English literature from the previous A*-C to a new 1-9 ranking, both students and teachers had to adjust to ensure high grades were achieved.

At their results day yesterday it was clear that Felpham's Year 11 pupils particularly excelled in the subject of maths with five 9 grades (the top result) achieved this year.

Head of maths Maragret Ballentyne was proud of all her students.

She said: "I'm really pleased with the students' achievements. It's been difficult with these new grades and not really knowing what to expect.

"It was important that they were all confident and that shows with these results. I'm delighted for our top students who are all coming back next year to study maths at the sixth form."

One of those students was 16-yearold Oliver Pearce who achieved a 9 for maths, an 8 and 7 in English along with an outstanding 8A*s and a distinction*.

Oliver, from Felpham, was pleased with his results.

"I thought I had done well but I was not expecting the results to be quite this good," he said.

His peers Amy Elvidge, 16, and Owen Maybey, 16, also achieved high grades in maths.

Amy spoke of her grade 8 in maths, 8

and 7 in English and 6A*s. She said: "I was expecting these grades because I worked really hard.

"I will be coming back to sixth form this year to study maths, further maths, physics and chemistry."

Owen, from Littlehampton, had also been expecting his results of a 9 in maths, 5 and 6 in English and 6A*s.

"I was quite confident in my exams so I thought I had done well. I'm really pleased with my maths result as it will get me places.

"Next year I will study maths, further maths and computer science," he said.

For some, though, the grades came as more of a surprise.

16-year-old Isabella Fenton, pictured inset, couldn't believe her high grades of all 7s in maths and English, 6A*s and a 1A and a distinction*.

She said: "I'm so happy. I hoped I had done okay but I was not expecting anything like these grades.

"I will come back next term because I love all the teachers here and they've been so great and supportive through it all."

Friends Georgia Hawkins, 16, and Lizzie Broggi, 16, celebrated together.

Georgia said: "We're both so happy. I'm really pleased with my 6 in maths."

Teachers and students alike credited the high grades to hard work.

Top student Jacob Vandriel, 16, explained that his 8 in maths, 7s in English and A*s in PE and the sciences were the result of dedicated studying.

"I'm really pleased with these results,

but I did have to work hard to get them," he said.

Headteacher Mark Ansitss acknowledged this. He said: "Staff and students have worked unbelievably hard.

"It's a relief to see all these excellent grades considering how difficult it has been for everyone with the new system in place. Our GCSE results are just as good as last year putting the college in the top percentage of the country. Considering all the changes this year that is great news."

School's best results ROSIE Mitchell has become one of the first students to achieve a perfect 9 in the new numerical GCSE grades.

Rosie, 16, was among the pupils at The Regis School in Bognor Regis to gain the highest grade possible as part of its best exam results.

Her 9 came in English language and was joined by a grade 8, 3A*s, 3As, a grade 7, a B and a C. Her other top subjects included English literature, PE, history, chemistry and biology.

She said: "I'm really happy with my results. They are better than I thought, especially in English. I didn't find the new grades hard in English because we had all the resources but in maths we were going in blind. That was difficult."

She will be studying in the school's sixth form on her way to a likely career in the law.

Another future sixth former Harry Nash, 16, gained a 9 in maths as well as a grade 8, 1A*, 2As, a grade 7, 4Bs and a C. He said: "It feels amazing to get a 9. I didn't expect these results. I was expecting more Bs and Cs." In all, five students at the school achieved a grade 9. The others were Jennifer Harmsworth (English), Louis Smith and Kasjan Paszkowski.

The new grades in English and maths are part of a government shake-up of GCSEs. But the school's students gained its top results in the qualifications.

The top 15 academic students achieved a staggering 113 A*-A grades, including the new 7-9, between them. This helped the school's performance at 5 A*-C, including English and maths, leap to 57 per cent.

Principal Mike Garlick said: "These best ever results are true testament to the rapid improvements made over the past few years at The Regis School.

"The recipe of great teaching and learning support, a strong focus on behaviour, and inspired, hard-working students is paying significant dividends and I am hugely proud of our successes this year."

Other students with notable results included: Emma Warburton - a grade 8, 2A*s, 2As, 2 grade 7s, 2Bs and 2Cs; Monica Defreitas - a grade 8, 5A*s, two grade 7s and 2Bs; Nafsin Uddin - two grade 8s, 2A*s, 2As, a grade 6, 1B and 2Cs; Chloe Hughes - 2A*s, three grade 7s, 3As, 2B and 1C; Ben Hauxwell - 1A*, 4As, two grade 7s, a grade 6, 1B and 1C; Alice Mitchell - 3A*s, 2As, a grade 7, two grade 6s, 2Bs and 1C; Pheobe Martin - a grade 8, 3A*s, two grade 7s, 4As and 1B. Jo Lewis, the vice principal for Year 11, said: "These results will enable our students to either join our successful sixth form or go on to have successful futures."

Pat's after bags of help for her first fundraiser f Joan Newton celebrates

Joan enjoys her 105th birthday JOAN Newton celebrated becoming one of the oldest known residents of Bognor Regis by saying: "I'd live my life all over again."

Joan reached 105 on Wednesday with a homemade cake and a party at Greenways Methodist Home with her fellow residents.

She has lived at the Hawthorn Road home of 42 residents longer than any of her neighbours and is also the oldest of them.

She was taken out for a birthday tea the previous day by her son, Gordon, on one of his regular visits from Dover.

Joan said: "At the moment, it does not feel any different being 105.

Sometimes, I go out for walk but it's nice if I don't have to."

One of her favourite destinations is West Dean Gardens, north of Chichester.

She is also a lover of crosswords and crime novels.

Joan was born in Tunbridge Wells and can remember Zeppelins going overhead in the First World War. She met her husband, Ewart, playing tennis and moved with him to his home town of Chichester in her late 20s. She worked in the district council offices, having been an insurance agent in Kent.

Ewart was also an office worker and the organist at Christ Church in the city. The couple moved to Greenways in 2000 and Ewart passed away about ten years ago.

CHARITY fundraiser Patricia Hopper is calling on Aldwick residents to have a heart.

Patricia has formed the Aldwick Fundraising Group of the British Heart Foundation to help the charity's efforts in tackling the cardiac conditions which can affect all ages.

Her first event will be a coffee morning and bring and buy sale from 10am on September 23 at her home in Queensfield West, opposite the recreation ground, in West Meads.

Patricia and her fellow initial members - Elizabeth Atkins, Diana Mercer and

Valerie Pratt - have started by placing collection bins in businesses in the area who have welcomed their efforts.

Patricia, 70, said: "I have been involved with the BHF for many years. I think the reason is that my brother died of a massive heart attack when he was 61 and that was 14 years ago.

"But many people who have heart attacks now can be saved thanks to the research which the BHF has helped to fund because of the work of its volunteers. That makes the donations we raise really important."

Former bank worker Patricia has toured the laboratories at a Southampton hospital

where some of the latest research is taking place. "The work they are doing there is quite amazing," she said.

"They can save so many people now and the operations they can carry out are unbelievable from young babies upwards."

Her previous fundraising work for the BHF included ten years of completing the annual London to Brighton bike ride.

"I must have raised thousands of pounds by doing that. I even had my own team Pat's Pedallers - and it was easy. Once you got on the bike, it was just a case of staying on it. It was like a day out," she added.

Call to bring songs to Chalcraft Hall Care Home this Christmas SELFLESS children will have the chance to make Christmas extra special for the residents of Chalcraft Hall Care Home in Bersted this year.

As part of the exciting Post Wonderland campaign children from around Chichester and Bognor Regis are being invited to help raise holiday spirit by raising their voices.

The team at Post Newspapers hopes to see as many as children as possible take part in a carol singing mission to bring traditional Christmas songs to care homes around the area.

The campaign is being generously sponsored by Regis Renovations who hope it can bring some Christmas magic into care homes in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Residents from the Chalcraft Hall Care Home are excited to be a part of this scheme.

Sara Whitworth, the home’s deputy manager, explained what the carols could mean for those in the home.

She said: “We are all so pleased to be a part of this, it’s such a good cause.

“It is so exciting for the residents and will be lovely for them to meet the children taking part.

“They love music especially around Christmas time, and to have it sung live to them will be so special.

“We’ve never had anything like this before.”

Chalcraft Hall offers care for people over the age of 65 years, however they specialise in caring for dementia patients.

They provide a vital service to those in need of help, whether continually or intermittently. By specialising in dementia care the staff at Chalcraft have ensured they have the highest level of understanding for their patients which is only aided by the friendly atmosphere of the home.

Since Sara started working at Chalcraft Hall last year she has witnessed the benefits of this affectionate relationship between both residents and staff. She said: “It’s a really fun-filled place to work.

We’re all like one big family.”

Fun and entertainment are always a consideration at Chalcraft Hall. Twice a week live music is provided and their caring staff bring quizzes, bingo, dancing, music therapy and much more to the residents who look forward to the different activities.

Lidl's last of the summer wines a definite bargain Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

A SOMEWHAT inclement spell of British August weather tends to divert attention from the beach to more indoor estival pursuits, so I duly headed off to Lidl to ascertain whether their wine cellar continues to prove alluring.

In terms of white wines and sparkling wines I looked for ones not exceeding £10 in price.

The 2016 Château Fayau Bordeaux from the Cadillac area initially caught my eye with its Sémillon grape mixed in with the Sauvignon Blanc grape producing a light fresh wine, pale in colour with notes of lemon and apple - good with food or as a party wine and retailing for £6.99.

I next happened upon an erstwhile old favourite of mine, namely an Australian Seaview Brut which proved to have good mousse with a light yeasty nose of baked apple, apricot, pear and lemon and offering good balance and acidity for a mere £6.99 - an unbeatable price for bubbly.

The Seaview Chardonnay Pinot Noir is an alternative at the same low price

and eminently drinkable too, although I preferred the Brut.

Plumbing the depths price-wise I next espied a 2015 Soave Classico in the normal wine selection for just £4.49.

2015 was a good year for Soave Classico and this one had citrus flavours to the fore with high acidity, was quaffable and refreshing and is drinkable on its own or with food and excellent value for money.

For a little extra expended (£5.99) the 2015 Val De Salis Chardonnay from the Pays D'Oc warmer vineyards of Southern France had good fruit, was lightly oaked and had strong melon and tropical fruit flavours and was well balanced and would pair well with

salmon or pasta dishes.

At the top of my budget the 2015 Les Grandes Chaumes Pouilly Fumé priced at £9.99, a most competitive price for this subtle wine, produced by André Saujot exudes gooseberry, grapefruit and grassy notes with stony minerality and is a good buy at this price.

My ultimate bargain this week, however, is the weekend offer of six bottles of Allini Prosecco for just £20 and perfectly quaffable to boot.

My customary diversion this week involves my weekend visit to Harry Boulter's Time Machine Records, pictured above, to confirm that I am the proud owner of one of the only five hundred copies of the 1967 Who Sell

Out albums with a poster and its mint condition and provenance makes it worth many a fine wine.

Back to Baccanalian pursuits, I was excited to find a 2015 Valle Central Malbec for the meagre price of just £4.49 which duly regaled my taste buds and is a no-brainer purchase - get in!

My next red was a Rioja Reserva and thus from two principal grapes, Tempranillo and Garnacha, with red fruits in abundance and the terms joven, crianza, reserva and gran reserva indicate increasing levels of oak-ageing with American oak being more popular adding coconut or vanilla flavours.

Chicken With Chickpeas, Tomatoes, and Chorizo

serves: 4-6

Method

INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving • 8 ounces Spanish-style chorizo, cut into 1/2-inch dice • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced (about 1 cup) • 1 tablespoon smoked Spanish paprika • 2 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1 (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes, preferably fire-roasted (such as Muir Glen) • 1 whole chicken (about 4 pounds), cut into 8 serving pieces, or a mix of bone-in, skin-on breasts, drumsticks, and/or thighs • 2 cups homemade or storebought low-sodium chicken stock • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 teaspoons sherry vinegar • Chopped fresh parsley leaves, for serving

1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker over mediumhigh heat until shimmering. Add chorizo and cook, stirring, until just starting to crisp around the edges, about 2 minutes. Add onions and cook, stirring, until softened, about 3 minutes.

Add paprika, chickpeas, tomatoes, chicken pieces, and broth. Season gently with salt and pepper.

2. Seal pressure cooker and bring to high pressure.

Cook for 15 minutes. Cool pressure cooker under a cold running tap (if using an electric cooker, use the quick release valve), and open. Return to high heat and cook, stirring gently, until it achieves a thick, stew-like consistency, about 5 minutes. Stir in vinegar and season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in parsley and serve, drizzling with more extra-virgin olive oil at the table.

15 empanadas

INGREDIENTS • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed • 2 cups shredded chicken • ½ cup enchilada sauce plus more for dipping • 1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese, plus more for sprinkling • 1 egg + 1 tablespoon water mixed together in small bowl • Sour cream, cilantro, green onion for garnish

The 2013 Cepa Lebrel (greyhound variety) Rioja Reserva at a low price of £5.79 has the flavour of ripe strawberries and has been oaked, although the vanilla is not that evident, and has a decent balance of soft tannins and some acidity and is good value as an easy - drinking red.

My final selection is that of a 2015 Pierre de Roucans Vinsobres, a fullbodied Rhône wine with spiced plum flavours and notes of pepper and decidedly dry and an ideal accompaniment to barbecued meat and all for the princely sum of £6.99.

Chicken Enchilada Empanadas

Method 1. Preheat oven to 375 F degrees.

2. In a bowl, mix together chicken and enchilada sauce.

3. Roll out puff pastry sheet slightly and cut into 4-inch discs. (I used a mini tart pan as a guide) Roll scraps together and roll out again to make more discs. You should get about 15 discs.

mixture in the middle of each disc and sprinkle with about a tablespoon of cheese.

Dot half of the disc with egg wash mixture and fold over, sealing edges.

Place on a baking sheet lines with a silt pad or parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Using a fork, poke two sets of holes on top of each empanada to let steam escape while baking.

Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with cheese.

Bake about 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.

Serve with extra enchilada sauce, green onions, sour cream and cilantro.

Ooh la la! French delights aplenty at Chez Moi writes Martin Lury HOME is where the heart is: a well-known adage and entirely fitting in the case of newlyestablished Chez Moi in Aldwick Road, Bognor Regis.

Arriving at circa one o'clock with a friend, I was immediately struck by the light interior and intimacy of all tables with the added bonus of space in between tables.

Furthermore, one way to gauge a restaurant's likely quality is to peruse the wine menu, which I duly did and noted a fine selection of wines and the unusual fact that all were available by the glass (even the more expensive ones) and the prices thereof were exceedingly reasonable.

As it felt a tad rude to just have a glass, we opted for a bottle of the Mâcon - Loché of 2015 vintage for just £18 (a bargain restaurant price, in my view) and found it to be fresh, fruity and refreshing with a hint of creaminess - quel délice!

Spoilt for choice, we were tempted by all the French provincial style dishes on the menu.

After much deliberation, we both opted for the locally-sourced, homemade crab soup with langoustines and it proved to be deliciously fresh, rich and a culinary experience of note.

We also sampled some of the gluten-free homemade bread with tomato and tarragon which looked heavy, but was beautifully light.

For main courses we looked at the specials board as I believe these dishes are often ones the chef likes to cook.

I chose the slow roasted (eight to nine hours according to the chef) pork belly (porchetta) with purée de pommes de terre, fine beans and accompanied by a sauce au cidre for just £10.50 - this was a veritable delight and the pork was decidedly moist and succulent and the sauce reduced to perfection.

My partner opted for the crispy duck with

salad (copious amounts of), pommes de terre sautées and boudin noir for £10.

The duck was tasty and the black pudding tender and a pleasant surprise. A lunch-time treat which meant no room left for puddings all priced at £4 including an Eton mess, a crème brûlée and an apple tart tatin.

The freshness of all ingredients shines through and the homemade bread was wholesome and tasty to boot.

The man toiling away in the kitchen is none other than Michael Newton-Young of Coffee Corner fame with his wife Nathalie as front of house.

Michael has worked with the Roux Brothers and it is most evident that cooking is his passion!

We were served by young Soipet with the ready smile and she outlined the opening

The evening menu, which is refreshed on a weekly basis, includes pan-fried sea bass, beef Wellington and pork belly.

Detox this September for a fresh, healthy beginning OK, SO the summer holidays are not quite over yet, but we are nearly there.

Maybe we have a few more weeks left of sunshine, or maybe you still have your summer holiday to look forward to.

But the school children are all picking up exams results, the evenings are getting noticeably darker (boo hoo!) and before we know it we will be shopping for new school uniforms and starting to think about autumn.

I actually love September. For me it’s a bit like January. It feels like a new start, and a new beginning after the over indulgence of the summer. Even though we want to look in our best shape in the summer months, and may spend weeks preparing for that bikini body, don’t you always find that it ends up with a continuous over indulgence?

Garden parties, barbecues galore, camping, drinking, etc.

So, for me, preparing for September is all about cleansing foods. Immediately we do this, our skin looks amazing, our energy is re-gained and our focus and determination can come back with extra vigor!

There are many ways to cleanse the body. You can do juice dieting, eat raw, live on smoothies, cut our carbs, don’t eat after 6pm, and the list goes on. But I think when you have over indulged; you need to introduce the good stuff slowly. Each day you can just add some health enhancing foods into your diet and see the difference it makes.

This is not only going to boost your immune systems, but help you to shed any extra pounds too.

Remember small steps makes big changes.

THERE is a real buzz of activity at the Aldingbourne Trust site as groundworks and superstructures have continued on track.

With the reinforced concrete columns and walls now being cast, for the first time it is possible to see the outline of the building structure.

High quality formers are used during the cylindrical support column pours, giving the pillars a beautifully smooth finish.

This is very important to the build as concrete is not only the main structural element, but also a key design feature.

While visiting the Amiri building works at the Aldingbourne centre, the blogging team went to see Mike and Kaye who run another one of the trust's success stories.

Aldingbourne Horse Rugs is a social enterprise company which trains and employs adults with learning disabilities and gifts all its profits back to the Aldingbourne Trust.

Picking up horse rugs from all across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, the rugs are cleaned with industrial washing machines then dried in a dedicated drying room.

The rugs can also be repaired and reproofed. Among other tasks, the trust's supported adults use wire brushes to clean the velcro strips which safely secure the blankets to the horses.

This vital job is often overlooked in horse rug washing, so you could say the trust's adults are not only making a big difference, but literally holding the company together!

ORGANISERS of a garden gathering in Climping are celebrating its success.

Sue Scanlon and Maggie Brackley raised £850 towards a potential £1,000 for Parkinson's UK with their mini-festival, pictured above.

The two invited friends and family to attend the feelgood fundraiser for the charity earlier this month.

Sue, 61, of Climping, pictured below right, was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2007 but that has not stopped her being active.

She is the president of a WI, a member of a walking group and also enjoys playing the piano. To keep herself moving, she is also an avid hoola-hooper, juggler and does ballroom dancing.

Her son, Ian, said: "The effort Mum put in was inspiring.

There must have been over 100 guests that attended who gave generously and a lot of fun was had by all.

"She doesn't let Parkinson's stop her living a fast-paced life and organising this party

WEST Sussex is the go to place for retirement, a new survey has shown.

The county has overtaken Dorset as the most attractive area in which to spend the years after retirement.

It is the county where pensioners have the highest quality of life, according to analysis of the latest publically available data for England and Wales. The analysis was carried out by Prudential UK to update its Quality of Retirement Index.

Stan Russell, a retirement income expert at Prudential, said: "There are now 10.6 million people aged 65 or over in England and Wales, a million more than five years ago, and accounting for nearly one in five of the total population.

"So, deciding the right place to retire to is a challenge faced by a large number of people each year.

"Our analysis shows that every part of the country has something different to offer pensioners, but the counties with the most attractive attributes tend to be along the southern and eastern coasts of England.

"Counties like West Sussex and Dorset may be attractive because of their low crime rates or the quality of their health care. However, finding the right spot to live in such popular locations can be tricky. It is understandable that many people want to choose somewhere attractive to live in retirement.

"And, before taking any decisions on how to turn their pension savings into an income, many will also benefit from a conversation with a professional finance advisor."

The Prudential's first place rating for West Sussex states: "With Fishbourne Roman Palace and Arundel Castle within its boundaries, West Sussex has a history of attracting people to come and live there.

"It remains attractive in 2017 as proven by the fact that it has the second highest net inflow of pensioners in England and Wales. This could be down to its strong rankings for good weather and disability-free life expectancy.

"Indeed, West Sussex achieved top four rankings in half of the eight research categories."

Second place in the rankings went Dorset and East Sussex was third followed by Devon and then Norfolk.

The following factors were among the eight considered when the ratings were compiled - the proportion of pensioners in the population, disability-free life expectancy, access to healthcare, crime and weather.

Carl Smith joined the thousands of spectators on Portsmouth's waterfront to capture the arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth in her home port, pictured above. He left home about 5.10am last Wednesday and drove to Gunwharf Quays before walking to the vantage point of the Round Tower.

"It was already full, apparently from about 4am onwards, but with some persuasive talking to the security guards, they kindly squeezed me in," he said.

"It was quite crowded on the tower and along the walls as far as one could see and, although stuck at the back of the crowd, by standing on the benches we could all see pretty well."

He could glimpse the floating leviathian - weighing 77,800 tonnes - in the haze beyond the Solent forts as she began to make her way in.

"Born and raised on the Isle of Wight, I have seen many of the great ships passing through the Solent over the years, and I find them fascinating to watch and enjoy.

"This was an event I had to see. It's an exciting experience to be part of welcoming a great British ship and a very proud moment for Portsmouth and the Royal Navy."

Carl also spent several years commuting to Portsmouth's College of Technology to train as an electronics engineer and ran his own business before he retired.

Successful nanny training expert chose town Emily Ward set up Norland College on seafront NO ONE can write an article about Field House without writing about Mrs Emily Ward, as they are synonymous with each other. Mrs Emily Ward is best known for establishing the Norland Training College for Nursery Nurses, initially to be Nannies to the Gentry.

In 1876, aged only 26 she opened the Norland Place School for infants at Nos 9 and 10 Norland Place in Kensington. She helped teach children at the Notting Hill High School, more specifically the smaller children, and suggested to the headmistress that a better atmosphere could be created for children in a kindergarten.

She eventually borrowed money from her grandmother and started Norland Place in 1876 with five pupils.

Over a period she began to question whether it was a satisfactory practice that a nursemaid was selected from the house servants, as usually occurred in Victorian households.

By 1892, she had opened her training school for ladies as children’s nurses alongside her infant school. This became known as the Norland Institute and was so successful that by 1900 she’d had to move twice to larger premises.

In 1880, Emily had been to Bognor to

convalesce after an illness, and one can only presume that she thought of Bognor when wanting to set up somewhere for children and their nannies to go to convalesce or on holiday.

By the mid 1890s, her name begins to appear on various plans and paperwork as having bought property in Bognor. First she acquired parts of the Strathmore Estate in the area of Gloucester Road, Campbell Road and the Esplanade.

In 1895 she had a house built for her and her husband. She had married Walter Ward in 1891, this was the Dutch House in Campbell Road which was finally demolished in 1988 to make way for a block of flats – Sovereign Court. From then on, she bought or acquired more houses in the area until in 1904 she acquired Field Row and then in 1908 began building Field House.

Field House was built in stages over many years, the first stage in 1908 butted on to Belvoir House which had been built three years earlier for Mrs Lane on the corner of Gloucester Road and the Esplanade.

In 1911, an adjoining section was built facing the sea with a court yard in front.

Later she acquired Belvoir House and the final section was built in 1926 - a three storey block facing Gloucester Road, which

explains why it looked a jumble of buildings.

Field Row had originally been purchased for children from the Norland Nurseries, but expanded to take other people who employed Norland Nurses.

Field House was a block of flats with a resident housekeeper and cook in charge.

All the separate parts of Field House had access to a central kitchen. Now she was able to accept elderly couples and semi invalids.

She offered many types of service as a 1911 advertisement displayed. Seasonal rents for furnished or unfurnished flats, additional services of meals provided or an average amount of attendance. The advertisement shows that some maintenance, washing of household linen, boot cleaning, and a kitchen fire could be provided with coal fuel costing 9d per scuttle.

There were some famous people who stayed in Field House. These included Princess Marina, aged six years, and her two older sisters in 1910 for 16 weeks with their nanny Nurse Katie Fox. The children of Emlyn Williams, an actor, also stayed and, in 1938, the two children of Herr Ribbentrop, the German Ambassador, also stayed.

Emily died at Sudley Lodge on June 15, 1930, (purchased around 1920) of a stroke at the age of 79. A memorial service was held at St John’s Church, London Road, on June 18 before a cremation at Woking.

There was already a stained glass memorial window in St John’s to her husband Walter, and Emily’s name was added to it. With the demolition of the church in 1972 there is no longer a lasting memorial to Emily Ward in Bognor Regis. Later it was learnt that the window was rededicated in the chapel of

Norland College, near Hungerford.

Field House continued with the work of Emily Ward until 1939, when the fees were recorded as £3 15s per week, it was then sold by the directors, having been left it in her will to the Norland Institute and Nurseries Ltd. During the period from 1939 until quite recently, the houses on the corner of Gloucester Road and The Esplanade have attracted various comments as the area seemed to have fallen into disrepair.

The buildings were commandeered by the RAF and then the Fleet Air Arm, which left after the war and they were sold for residential use. Many of the buildings had been purchased or rented out as flats to locals or staff from Butlin’s over the years.

After numerous reports of demolition and change of use throughout this period, demolition finally took place in October 1995 and the mixture of buildings was removed from the corner.

Next, the town's residents waited with baited breath to see what would replace the jumble of buildings. It was not long before hoardings were placed around the site, and with the wonders of the digital camera an artist’s impression of the new buildings arrived, shown complete, with the roads, traffic and adjoining buildings.

Worked started and it became apparent that the building was going to be a modern design which was potentially controversial Interestingly, this mirrored the situation in 1909 when Emily Ward had to reassure Bognor residents her flats were not for ‘infectious children’. This seems to imply that she courted some controversy with her work.

MANY of us will know home and haberdashery shop Closs & Hamblin more by their abbreviated title of C&H. However, they have recently reverted back to their original name to remind themselves and customers of their long heritage.

On April 1 1933 Harold Closs and Cyrill Hamblin founded small yet popular shops that specialised

Since then the firm has only continued to grow, both in size and in its services and products available. It has remained within the family of the Hamblins to the present day, surviving the rationing and physical damage to shops and stock during the Second World War and, perhaps even more impressive, modern demands for cheap off-the-rack clothing.

Closs & Hamblin is currently under ownership by the fourth generation of Mr Hamblins and shows no sign of slowing down.

Having now branched out into home fabrics as well as haberdashery you can expect to find a wide range of material products from curtains, upholstery, cushions, blinds and poles. Their craft materials are also highly popular with knitting, sewing and dress making products in store for customers who are feeling creative.

To mark the re-branding of Closs & Hamblin to its original name the

Chichester shop has also undergone an exciting new refurbishment. Since the store on North Street opened in 1994 it hadn’t changed, until now. Not only has the store front changed to read ‘Closs & Hamblin’ but there is a glossy new dark blue colour scheme to match.

Store manager Linda Coote hopes customers understand that the quality of their products and services haven’t changed with the makeover.

She said: “We might have changed the way our shop-front looks but we still provide the same service, advice and friendly approach that has been here since we opened in 1994.”

The advice of Linda’s team is something they are very proud of. With experienced and passionate seamstresses, knitters and crafters among the staff there is always someone there to assist and advise customers. Linda describes it as a “bespoke service”, something that is also found in the way in which their fabrics are sold: cut to measure rather than prepackaged so you are sure to get exactly what you need.

And that’s what Closs & Hamblin have been providing customers for almost 85 years, and they don’t intend to change that anytime soon.

Their holistic approach offers complementary therapies, counselling and support groups. They are experiencing a period of growth and looking for enthusiastic and reliable Fundraising and Marketing volunteers to help and support their staff and fundraising team. These are vitally important and rewarding roles which will help keep the centre open for the CancerWise family. They offer flexibility and are not necessarily a weekly commitment. Typical activities: Helping to organise fundraising events and attending on the day, Visiting shops, restaurants and writing letters asking for raffle prizes, Approaching schools and companies to ask for support, Writing thank you letters for donations and Keeping publicity leaflets holders topped up.

Mencap Visiting Volunteer (Bognor Regis and Selsey) – Mencap Could you or someone you know make a positive impact on the life of a person with a learning disability? Can you spare 12 hours a year? Mencap are looking for volunteers to join their Visiting Service, an empowering service to people with a learning disability, after their parents have passed away. You would need to volunteer around six times a year in your own time to support people to enjoy the activities they love. This could be anything from staying in for a cuppa and cake, to going on day trips and outings. Volunteers receive induction and ongoing support from the volunteering team, plus expenses and mileage. The times required can be flexible to your availability - you will be able to volunteer as and when you are available; this could include some weekends and evenings. You will make six visits per year, and we would hope that would be able to volunteer for at least 1 year.

Bognor's survival hopes remain alive PostSport after Jones and Willway partnership BOGNOR kept their survival hopes alive after securing a much needed six-wicket win against St James's Montefiore in Sussex Division Two. After restricting the visitors to 196-7, an unbeaten century partnership between Rob Willway (88*) and West Indian overseas player Jerome Jones (53*) guided Bognor home.

It means Max Ashmore's side remain second bottom with two games left to play in the season. They head to fifth-placed Lindfield tomorrow (12pm) knowing that they need a win if they are to play division two cricket next season.

Bognor will need more of the same fighting spirit that they showed last weekend.

The platform was set by a solid bowling display led by Joe Ashmore (2-48)which restricted the visitors to a slightly-below par total.

With the bat, Bognor looked to be struggling after losing four of their top order for single figures. But Willway and Jones pushed on, putting on 120 to guide the side home.

In the Sussex Premier Division, Middleton suffered a six-wicket loss to Preston Nomads in a rain affected match.

After being put into bat, the Bognor-based side fell to 15-4 before skipper Sean Heather (52) and Patrick Colvin (41) put on 77 for the fifth wicket.

Apart from late salvoes from Matt Cooke (22 from 18) and Tommy Davies (18 from 15), no other Middleton batter scored above 11 as they stumbled to a score of 169 all out. In reply, Nomads knocked off the runs comfortably with more than eight overs to spare.

Middleton travel to second-place Roffey tomorrow (11.30am) looking for a surprise win to affect the title race.

In division three, Chichester Priory Park have been knocked out of the promotion places after their six-wicket loss to title rivals Haywards Heath.

Batting first, Chi struggled to get going, perhaps distracted by the two Spitfires flying above on the way to Eastbourne's Airbourne festival.

Their total of 115 all out was chased down with plenty to spare meaning they must win when they face fourth-placed Pagham at Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (12pm). Pagham lost at home to Preston Nomads by four wickets last time out.

THE GLOVES were off at Selsey's Little Spain Bowling Club for the annual finals weekend.

In an excellent two days of play, dozens of people turned out to watch team mates play off against each other to lift some silverware for the season.

It started with the yardstick tournaments where 2015 John Ballinger beat club vice captain Bob Hughes 31-7 in the mens while John's wife Sylvia retained the trophy she won last year with a convincing 24-11 victory over club newcomer Jillie Ranscombe.

Club captain Iain Mayzes and Geoff Spicer took the men's pairs final.

Sylvia Ballinger then made it a Champagne day to remember when she linked up with another member, Chris Lankshear, to win the ladies' title Sunday saw Trevor Palmer make it five singles titles when coming from behind to beat Jim Lankshear 21-14.

Val Palmer then made it a successful day for the Palmers when she won her fourth club

singles title by beating Barbara Bond 22-10.

The weekend was rounded off with Archie Coletta (non-winners trophy final) and Chris Lankshear and John Ballinger (mixed pairs) scoring respective victories.

Elsewhere in division one of the West Sussex Bowls League, Bognor A rounded off their season with a convincing 102-51 victory over Southbourne.

The ten points secured lifted them above Chichester A to third in the table, although Chi still have two matches to play.

The Priory Park side lost ground, however, with an 84-78 defeat to Tarring Priory A, which ended their hopes of a top-two finish.

In division two, Pagham are up to fourth after a 90-61 victory over Witterings.

In division three, Middleton secured easy victories over Norfolk B and East Preston B to lift them into mid-table.

Chichester B remain three places above them in third after losing 96-66 to Petworth, in a defeat which ends their title hopes.

Selsey sit top after Goulding and Morey strike for the Blues

Pagham move on in FA Cup PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds is urging his side to keep their feet on the ground despite his unbeaten side producing an FA Cup shock to progress to the next round.

The Lions produced two fine performances to eliminate the higher division Sittingbourne after a replay in the preliminary round of the competition.

Next up is a trip to Isthmian South side Carshalton Athletic on September 2.

But, before then, Pagham must return to the SCFL Premier, hosting Peacehaven & Telscombe tomorrow (3pm) before travelling to Loxwood on Tuesday (7.45pm).

But Simmonds, who took up the reigns alongside Richie Hellen in the summer, is urging his unbeaten side not to get too carried away with Tuesday's 1-0 win, secured by a late goal by the returning Terrell Lewis.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "We have started really well and are unbeaten so far but it is only a start and we have simply laid the foundations.

"We are taking one game at a time and now our full focus is on Peacehaven and then on to Lockwood. The key is not to get too far ahead of ourselves."

The replay only happened after a Scott Murfin strike secured a 1-1 draw at home to the Isthmian South side.

Then, at Sittingbourne, Lewis struck with ten minutes to play to secure a place in the next round and another pay cheque of £1,925 for the club.

Simmonds said: "On Tuesday we were superb. They came at us from the start but we did really well to stay in the match.

Then at half time we changed a few things around.

"We always knew that we would have a chance or two if we managed to stay compact and when that chance came we took it."

A further £3,000 could be banked by the Lions if they beat Carshalton in a week's time.

Simmonds said: "It's massive for us. We have got a real good team spirit here even though it's quite a young group. For us to play the way we did and beat a lot more experienced side over two games will do wonders for us."

He added: "The money is great for the club as, like every club at this level, you want to win as many games as you can as that money goes a long way."

TABLE-TOPPING Selsey will be looking to build on their good start to the season in SCFL Division One. The Blues continued their unbeaten start to the campaign last Saturday when goals from Ryan Morey and Ryan Goulding helped them defeat a strong-looking Hailsham Town team 2-0 at the High Street Ground.

But they lost that tag on Tuesday when they were beaten 4-1 at SCFL Premier Chichester City in the Peter Bentley Cup. Focus now switches back to the league where Steve Bailey's side have two games in the space of three days.

First up is a trip to Steyning Town tomorrow (3pm) to play a side whose good home form on the 3G pitch propelled them to a top six finish last term.

The Barrowman have won their only match in the league 6-1 at Ringmer. Selsey are sure to prove a more serious test - they have previous over Steyning, winning 5-1 on their last visit on the last day of the previous campaign.

Then the Blues face Midhust & Eastbourne on Monday at home (11am), a side they have already beaten 4-1 in the cup this season.

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford is demanding more from his squad - despite his charges racking up two wins and scoring ten goals in less than a week.

The Lillywhites started the season slowly, losing their first two matches of the season.

But since then Chi have upped their game, winning the next three - including a 6-0 demolishing of Arundel in the SCFL Premier before defeating Selsey 4-1 in the Peter Bentley Cup. Despite the upturn in form, Rutherford believes there's a lot more to come from his

side - and he wants to see a difference in games at Saltdean United (tomorrow, 3pm) and at home to Lancing (Monday, 11am).

After the Selsey game, the Chi boss said: “To be honest, we were poor in the first twenty minutes or so and didn't play with our usual pace and intensity.

"The boys know it. When we play with pace in the final third, we're a match for most sides. We did that for maybe 25 minutes tonight but the challenge is can the lads do it for 90 minutes?”

But four goals in the space of six minutes decided the contest with Jack Lee (2), Rob Hutchings and Josh Clack getting on the scoresheet.

It was the second big win in just a few days after the league win over Arundel.

Josh Clack and Dave Herbert started the scoring before Lorenzo Dolcetti added to the tally in the second period.

Then Tafadzwa Kanjada, who is affectionately known as the Fuzz, bagged a hat-trick to seal the win. * Sidlesham will be looking to make it three wins from three to start their SCFL Division Two campaign when they host Upper Beeding tomorrow (2pm).

Daren Pearce's side started the campaign with a comfortable 5-1 win at Worthing Town thanks to goals from Tom Atkinson, Mendes Borges (2) and Tom Bayley.

That was followed up with a 2-1 win over Clymping under the lights at The Rec, Tom Jefkins and Bayley getting on the scoresheet.

The Sids also welcome Rustington to The Rec on Monday (11am).

Bosham's defence of the title continues with away matches at Alfold (tomorrow, 3pm) and Ferring (11am).

Chi Ladies defeated in season's opener CHICHESTER City Ladies face an uphill task to secure their first points of the FA Women's Premier South campaign.

The newly-promoted Green Army made their debut at the higher level with a frustrating 2-0 reverse at C&K Basildon last weekend.

Sunday sees Chi make their bow in the competition in front of their home crowd at Oaklands Park against Crystal Palace (2pm).

But they will need to be on their guard as the visitors won their opener 9-0 in a rampant display against QPR. Chi will be looking to use the energy and enthusiasm that kept them in the match against a strong Basildon side.

Nerves were definitely on show in the early

stages from Chichester After only five minutes they were behind to a sensational goal from April-Rose Bowers who picked her spot with a superb curling effort.

As the half wore on the nerves certainly ebbed away for the green army and the likes of Cherelle Khassal and Charley Wilson-Blakely were seeing a lot more of the ball.

Jess Lewry's shot was easily saved and a Khassal volley was straight at the home side's keeper. After the break, Basildon doubled their lead after a shot was parried into the path of Danica Revell.

Chichester, to their great credit, never gave up but Wilson-Blakely and Khassal spurned chances to open their side's scoring account for the season.

Rocks will focus on their own game ahead of Howell return Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes his Rocks squad will be unfazed by the return of former manager Jamie Howell to the Nye Camp.

Howell stepped down from the top job to take up the reigns at Eastbourne Borough just a few days after Bognor secured promotion to the National League South.

With the season less than a month old, the former Rocks skipper will bring his new side to Nyewood Lane on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).

Before then, Pearce will take his unbeaten Rocks side to the familiar surroundings of East Thurrock United tomorrow (3pm).

But he insists that, despite the history and the happy memories of Howell's time at the helm, there will be no time for sentiment when the two Sussex sides meet.

Pearce said: "It doesn't affect us at all. I'm sure he will want to do well but we want to do well too.

"I'm sure that it will be the first of many times he comes back to Nyewood Lane and we wish him well in his new role at a new club.

"They will want to beat us But we will be doing what we always try to do and that's pass the ball better than the opposition and eventually win the game."

The Rocks go into this round of fixtures in sixth position after winning two and drawing three of their matches so far. The latest match was a 1-1 draw against Weston-Super-Mare

on Saturday.

After falling behind to an early goal, Dan Beck's second half header drew Bognor level.

But, despite the Rocks being the highest scorers in the league, they were unable to convert one of a number of chances to seal the victory against a side who are in the relegation zone and who played an hour of the match reduced to ten.

Pearce said: "It's fair to say that we dropped two points when you consider that after they went down to ten men we created more than enough chances.

"We were only looking for one. I thought we had five or six really good opportunities and didn't really finish.

"It's disappointing but these things happen and in the half hour when they had 11 players they were more than useful.

"If you look at their position in league it shows how strong the league is. There's no easy games out there."

Bognor look sure to be tested in the coming days. East Thurrock United are currently third having won three of their five matches so far.

Having netted 14 in those games, only Bognor have scored more so far this campaign.

Then it is on Eastbourne Borough who are 16th in the 22-team division but go into the match off the back of an impressive 1-0 win away at Truro City last weekend.

'Injuries could start to hurt us' IT took less than a month of the season for it to happen - but already Bognor are facing one of their customary injury crises.

Rocks fans have become used to the fact that a small squad can sometimes lead to difficulties. With just five games just gone in the National League South campaign, boss Jack Pearce has one of those all to familiar selection headaches.

Last weekend's match against WestonSuper-Mare pushed Bognor's squad to the limits - with Ollie Pearce joining the injury list after picking up a groin strain.

Ahead of a bank holiday weekend of two matches in three days, the Rocks have four players who are looking doubtful - Jimmy Muitt, Pearce, Corey Heath and Doug Tuck.

While manager Jack Pearce says he is looking for short-term solutions, he admits it is not easy to do given the short period of time. He said: "It's difficult with the amount of injuries that we have. As it stands, we are in for a challenging weekend so we need a few signings to help us for Monday.

"We can only sign people for Monday by 5pm on Friday so it's not going to be easy. But we will review things at training and I'll make calls to see if we can get some players."

AFTER missing the first four games of the season due to getting married and my honeymoon I'm back.

A break is always nice, whatever time of the year it comes, but it was great to get back into action on Saturday in front of the home crowd against Weston-Super-Mare.

While I've been away, I've been keeping up with results and watching the highlights of every game which are available now of every side in the division.

After seeing how we have been getting on, I was quite looking forward to getting back to playing.

The team has been on fire to start the season and it's great to see how well Jimmy Muitt and Ollie Pearce have been playing.

Ollie, in particular, I don't think I've ever seen him play this well, which is fantastic.

Where we need to improve is our defensive work and keeping it tight to make sure we make the most of scoring those goals.

The league is a lot different to the Isthmian Premier.

There are a lot of teams that keep the ball extremely well for long spells.

That means that we need to work really hard on shoring up at the back, as a team in the Isthmian we could get away with an expansive level of play.

At this level, you know that if a side gets a chance nine times out of ten they will score.

It's something that I have to think about and perhaps consider changing my game as I have been quite an attacking full back pushing forward at every opportunity.

Now, when we are perhaps not dominating possession, I have to be more disciplined in terms of when I go and how for I go forward.

It's something I'm looking forward to developing and improving on over the course of the season.

In terms of Saturday, it was disappointing not to get the

victory. If you look at the chances we had before they had a player sent off then we had three very good ones.

But Ollie went on his left foot rather than his right when through on goal, Alex Parsons was tripped which led to their red card and Sami missed a header.

Then after that we had a further eight chances where we should have scored but we did not put our chances away.

If you look at all of that then on reflection I think it is two points dropped rather than one gained.

We move on, though, to this weekend when we have two tough games ahead.

East Thurrock we know quite well and I have played against them six or seven times.

They are a decent team who play with a quick tempo and they have a front four get a lot of goals at their place.

But we also know the atmosphere is dead - there is never anything going on which is to our advantage.

But they have done really well since going up, we know what they are about and have to be on their mettle Then we have Eastbourne Borough and the return of Jamie Howell.

It will be strange as I never played against him when he was at Burgess Hill and there are some of our set pieces which he designed so the calls will have to be changed.

But, in terms of him coming to the Lane, all of the pressure is on him.

We could quite easily win both or lose both. But we will take them together and maybe set ourselves a target of four points from the two.

We will also come up against Gary Charman who has joined Eastbourne on loan.

He has been a stalwart for the club and a man mountain for me personally and for everyone at the Lane. I do wish him and Jamie all the best - although not until after Monday!
