Demand to end traffic misery A NEW road has been demanded by Bersted’s councillors.

THey said the additional route would relieve the traffic misery of thousands of motorists a day.

THey want the road to run through the proposed Salt Box commercial estate revealed in the Post earlier this month.

THe road would be the ‘missing link’ between the two sections of the Bognor Regis northern relief road and bypass the

dangerous bottleneck which has been created at Rowan Way’s junction with the A29 Shripney Road.

Cllr Gill Yeates, the chairman of Bersted Parish Council’s planning, amenities and environment committee, said the number of vehicles on Rowan Way was creating a dangerous situation.

“We are still very concerned about the roads. THere have been another two accidents in that area. Yesterday, there

was a bad one with everything snarled up in every direction for about an hour.

“THere’s really no alternative to that road (Rowan Way) and that’s quite a problem. Being a business owner in that area, I know how frustrating it is. I can’t really see how other businesses are going to sort it out,” she said.

She told the August meeting of the parish council last week the relief roads should be connected with a new section

through the Salt Box, which lies between Rowan Way and the A29.

“THat road should be re-aligned to its proper position through that estate and this is the time when it can be done.”

THe current relief road was built between the A259 Chichester Road and Rowan Way for its western section and then from the A29 to the A259 at Felpham in its eastern half.

Art is a colourful addition to picnic ART ADORNED an annual picnic in Bognor Regis for the first time.

THe pencil, watercolour and pastel paintings and art poems were created by people supported in the town by the United Response charity.

THose whose work was on display at the Big Picnic at the bandstand in Hotham Park included Sophie Mayes and Sue Stevens.

Sophie had several illustrated poems and paintings on show for people to admire. THey included Colourful Pansies and House 48 named after the charity's premises in the town centre.

"It's really nice to see my work on display," said Sophie, 28. "I'm really proud of it. I suffer from anxiety and creating art helps me to relax.

"I've been going to House 48 for four years and I've made plenty of friends there. I used to sit indoors and never go out."

Her handmade jewellery was also on show along with cards made by others at House 48.

Sophie is also the Sussex Recovery College's representative for the centre.

She takes part in monthly meetings to pass on suggestions for new courses and any moans.

A former student, she has completed courses in raising self esteem and speaking up for herself.

THe host of work on show from Sue, 55, included her felt tip drawings, Hula Hoops and Fashionable Ladies.

"THe clothes are based on those I

remember from the Seventies," she said.

"I used to draw a lot and I can remember those brightly coloured clothes. I like drawing those colours."

Sue, who has autism, has been a regular at House 48 for five years. She has also been a student with the Sussex Recovery College this year and received a certificate at the picnic with the town's mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, and his mayor's consort, Steve Hearn, present.

As well as the art, the Big Picnic last Friday included a range of stalls and activities. THey included decorating homemade cakes, a vegetable stall from an organic allotment, a book stall, a tombola and a picnic lunch in the sun.

THe college is run across Sussex by the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust. Its courses are aimed at enabling people to manage their mental health and to help to alleviate symptoms.

It has 130 courses in West Sussex from this October to next March and some 2,000 students across Sussex last year.

United Response's senior operations manager, Mary Doran, said: "THis picnic is a good opportunity to celebrate and promote good mental wellbeing.

"It's important that we all feel well but, sometimes, people with mental health problems, don't have that opportunity.

"It's also a chance for us to engage with the wider community and to do things in a community setting."

Other organisations involved with the event included Worthing Churches Homeless Project and Mind West Sussex.

Seafront fun is in prospect in Felpham for the bank holiday PLENTY of fun is in prospect on Felpham seafront on bank holiday weekend.

THe annual Fun On THe Prom event is taking place around Blakes Road on August 26.

Cllr Gloria Moss, who chairs the council's projects committee, said: "THis is the tenth year of Fun on the Prom. It is a fun and community event and is the council's gift to the community.

"We feel this is a nice gesture to bring people together to celebrate Felpham and everything that is here, such as the wonderful seafront."

Hours of music and enjoyment for all ages is in store from 2pm courtesy of Felpham Parish Council.

THere will be a host of rides, children's entertainment, inflatables, donkey rides, Punch and Judy shows and Mr Tom Foolery.

Owls About Town will be present with a petting zoo and a presence from the coastguards is also due, emergencies permitting.

Oldies and Goodies music will be provided by a DJ in the afternoon.

From 6pm live music will come from THe Debonnaires and Hattie as well as Blue Soul Train.

Mayor's starring role to create new screen

Tributes paid to Arun councillor f James Courtnage, left, and Cllr Phil Woodall TOWN mayor Cllr Phil Woodall had a smashing time when he saw the work to extend the Bognor Regis cinema.

Cllr Woodall picked up a sledgehammer to attack the rubble left by the demolition of an extension at the Picturedrome.

THe area occupied by the extension, which contained the ladies' and disabled toilets and a small store, will be transformed into a fourth screen.

Cllr Woodall said at Wednesday's site visit to the ambitious £957,500 scheme: "It's brilliant that, at long last, work has started on this extension.

"Hopefully, the bigger cinema will bring in more people to the town and will boost its economy. It will also contribute to the regeneration. I'm looking forward to watching a film in the new screen."

He praised the decision of the councillors who bought the historic

cinema about 15 years ago for saving it for the town.

"THe cinema is an asset and it offers good value for money for everyone. Many people in the town can easily walk here and they don't have to pay for transport."

As reported, Bognor Regis Town Council agreed last April to add the fourth screen.

THis followed some four years of debates about the project for a cinema which has shown films since 1919 in a Grade IIlisted building which dates from 1886.

THe cinema is run by Picturedrome Electric THeatre Company on a lease from the council. James Courtnage, the cinema's acting general manager, said: "We are definitely looking forward to having the new screen open. It will bring a lot more people in and give us the chance to show a lot more films.

"THe demand is there for another

screen. We are always being asked for more films and more screenings."

THe fourth screen, at the rear of the building, is set to have 110 seats to make it the second largest in the Picturedrome.

It is likely to open next spring. Building work is due to end in February.

Construction is being carried out by Cheesmuir. Site manager, Victor Junasko, said: "I've been in this industry for 38 years and this is the first cinema screen I have built.

"It is a bit unusual to do work on a building like this, though the extension which has been knocked down is only about 20 years old. I'm looking forward to getting on with the work. THere will be 2030 people here, maybe more, when we are at our busiest with the extension."

THe cinema's current three screens are staying open while the extension is built.

ONE OF the longest-serving members of Arun District Council has passed away.

Cllr Jacqui Maconachie died at her home in THe Steyne in Bognor Regis last Friday morning after she lost her battle with cancer.

Jacqui leaves a legacy behind her having been a Conservative councillor in the Aldwick West ward on the council for 22 years.

Nigel Lynn, the council's chief executive, said the thoughts of councillors and employees were with her husband, fellow Arun District Council member Cllr Dougal Maconachie, and her loved ones at such as sad time for them.

"Jacqui was a passionate and determined councillor who cared and worked hard.

"Jacqui will be missed by so many, and on behalf of Arun District Council, I offer my since condolences to her family and friends," he said.

At the last election in 2015, she was re-elected in second place in the poll with 1,397 votes - comfortably ahead

of UKIP's John Wedderburn.

During her time on the district council, she served as its chairman in 2001/02.

More recently, she was the chairman of the development control committee and proved an active and influential member of many other committees.

Another tribute to Cllr Mrs Maconachie came from the Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, Nick Gibb.

He said: "Jacqui Maconachie was a great public servant who fought for and loved her adopted town of Bognor Regis.

"She worked tirelessly for the people she represented in Aldwick and for the wider Arun District area.

"Jacqui had strong principles and beliefs and was a life long and active Conservative.

"She will be deeply missed by her husband Dougal, her friends and family and by those she represented.

I will miss her quick wit and her friendship."

` Crash on A259 A DRIVER was seriously injured in a collision between two 4 X 4 cars on the A259 in North Bersted.

THe crash occurred shortly before 12.30am yesterday on Chichester Road between a red Jaguar F Pace and a blue Mitsubishi Shogun.

THe Shogun driver, a 45-year-old man from Bognor Regis, was released from his vehicle by firefighters before he was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious leg and pelvic injuries.

THe Jaguar driver ran off and was being sought by police yesterday morning as the Post went to press.

THe A259 was closed both sides of the accident until 7am yesterday.

` Agency on TV STAFF at a Bognor Regis recruitment agency are to star in a TV documentary.

THe four workers at Opus Loco have had their daily routines recorded by a film crew ready for a Channel 4 documentary this autumn.

Channel 4 spokeswoman Marion Bentley said: "Bognor-based recruitment agency Opus Loco is taking part in a new one-hour Channel 4 documentary following the staff and temporary workers at the agency over the busy summer season." THe agency, based in London Road, is owned by Sarah Dale and has traded since 2011.

Police raise loo crime fear PROPOSED toilets along Bognor Regis seafront could be a magnet for crime, police have said.

Sussex Police has told planners it wants the doors of the controversial loos changed to reduce the risk of illegal behaviour.

Its designing out crime officer, Phillip Edwards, comments to Arun District Council about its planned conveniences: "I have concerns about the positioning of the facility, which as (a) result causes the toilet doors to open on to the promenade's balustrade area.

"With the doors open, this creates a barrier blocking users in, unable to make their way back to the promenade until the adjacent door is closed. THis is more apparent for the middle cubicle users.

"THis orientation increases the vulnerability of the users, the opportunity for robbery, assault and anti-social behaviour as well as the fear of crime.

"Despite the design's orientation being suggested to alleviate bad weather conditions impacting upon the users, I recommend the orientation be changed so that the doors open on to the promenade.

"THis will remove the possibility of creating a blocked-off area and reduce the opportunity for robbery and assault as well as reducing the fear of crime by utilising natural surveillance and the presence of capable guardians who are using the public promenade.

"Should the orientation remain the same with all the doors opening in, this will remove my above concerns but will

impact upon the available space inside."

He said he had no major concerns with the proposal regarding crime levels at the intended location. But additional measures should be considered to mitigate against any identified local crime trends.

THe positioning of the doors of the toilets, facing north across THe Esplanade, to the Esplanade Grande flats has provoked a flurry of protests from their residents.

Arun has proposed the toilets to replace the closed underground loos on THe Esplanade. THe new facilities will be built on the site of the current foreshore office.

A new office is proposed nearby.

Mr Edwards says: "I recommend the fitting of vandal resistant dusk till dawn lighting above each door.

"I support the recommendation of the fitting of a one-way viewer in the doors to ensure safe exit for the user."

Vandal resistant doors and windows and laminated glazing that conform to national standards should be installed in the toilets. THe same standards should also be used for doors, windows and glazing in the beach office.

He says: "I recommend the fitting of a monitored intruder alarm within the premises to alert any out of hours unauthorised entry."

"Should any shutters be installed within either of the two buildings, I recommend that these are treated with an anti-graffiti treatment to assist in the removal of any graffiti and tags," he adds.

Playing a range of activities for the sunny school holidays CHILDREN and parents gathered at Avisford Park and West Park on Tuesday for a day of fun, free activities.

Play Rangers from the Meynell Games Group in Eastbourne supplied equipment for the children to enjoy and play with for free.

Activities, funded by Aldwick Parish Council, included a giant inflatable play area, woodwork activities and crafting.

Jodie Ship, 36, from Pagham attended Avisford Park with friends and her two children, Jaxon aged four and Macie aged seven.

Jaxon was particularly excited about the woodwork activities and said: "I like the building stuff. I'm making a holder. I start a hole in the wood with the drill and

hammer the nail in, it makes it easier."

Meynell, who ran the activities said: "It's so fantastic to watch the children. It really shows that they need to come out and play and get left to just get on with it. Kids don't play to learn, they learn through play."

Children of all ages were welcome and Meynell believed they should be allowed to explore on their own.

He said: "One child fell off the inflatables earlier and shouted 'THis is the most fun I've had in my life,' as he was lying on his back."

As well as Avisford Park, the Play Rangers are also running activities at West Park on Tuesdays and THursdays throughout the rest of the month.

Protestors are urged to place more pressure about homes

PROTEST letters to utility companies have been pledged by housing campaigners in Pagham.

Up to a hundred opponents of the planned homes attended the latest session held by PAGAM to give their support to its work.

THey were urged to write to firms like Southern Water and the highway section at West Sussex County Council to urge them to stand up for the area.

He said the four-hour event on Tuesday had been a success.

"Today has been good. We've seen a few new faces and some familiar ones as well. But, f we only had two people turn up, it would still be a success because it would spread our message.

"THe Willowhale Community Centre is also a new venue for us. It is the first time we have staged an event in this part of Aldwick and it has worked well."

THe current housing plans for Pagham are for up to 300 homes in Hook Lane, up to 400 homes south of Summer Lane and up to 250 homes north of Sefter Road.

But parish councillors expect those numbers to increase once the multiple proposals for a school and care homes are replaced with a single location.

Among those who went along to the latest PAGAM workshop were Pagham couple Harry and Heather Marchant, both 63, of Avian Drive.

Mr Marchant said: "I'm very opposed to all these new homes because of issues like the flooding risk and traffic chaos.

"THere is only a narrow winding road up to Chichester and there is enough traffic chaos already. Many of these houses will have two or more cars and that will make the situation much worse."

Mrs Marchant said: "If there are more people living here, we will need more doctors, dentists and chemists.

"THere are not many around here and it's important we have more."

PAGAM will have a stall at this Sunday's Pagham on Parade at the village hall.

Scheme's first helper

FORMER policeman Richard Armitage has become the first volunteer for a new Bognor Regis crimefighting initiative.

Richard has signed up as an area co-ordinator for the Hotham Watch section of the town’s Neighbourhood Watch scheme. He will lead the network’s activities around his Hook Lane home as Hotham Watch founder Steve Goodheart seeks to fill gaps in coverage around the central area of the town. d sofas.

some 30 years. Only one in five of the total number of households across the wider Bognor Regis area operate in the six council wards which cover the town.

Mr Goodheart said he had been contacted by many people willing to get involved. But a drawback was the need for extra signs – and locations for them – and the venues for them to meet.

“People want to have more signs in the vicinity of their homes. THey are looking to get more information about where meetings are taking place. But I also need to walk around the estate putting flyers through peoples’ doors and that is time consuming.”

He is running the initiative with his fellow town councillor, Pat Dillon, and the Bognor Regis area’s Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, Drew Millar.

Mr Millar said: “We have got to raise the visibility of Neighbourhood Watch around the town.”

Funding from Bognor Regis Town Council has allowed new Neighbourhood Watch signs to be installed in the area. Residents who live in Hotham ward north of the B2259 Hotham Way should email Richard at: richardnhw2017@gmail.com for details.

THe Salt Box of 11.8 hectares has been earmarked for commercial use

THat will solve all the problems at the Halfords junction.

“We have to speak to our county and district councillors to make sure this issue is raised again. To me, it’s the obvious answer. If they want the development, that’s where they ought to put the road.” * Criticism of the jobs likely to be created by the Salt Box scheme was made by the councillors.

Council votes against loos LOSS of privacy for residents facing proposed toilets on Bognor Regis seafront has led to town councillors objecting to the plans.

THe prospect of flat owners in Esplanade Grande being able to see users of the conveniences leaving the planned building’s north-facing doors meant the scheme should be scrapped, town councillors said.

Members of the town council's planning and licensing committee voted 3-0, with two abstentions, against the proposals from Arun District Council.

THey also made it clear at Monday’s special meeting they were unhappy with the design of the intended building.

THeir decision came after some 70 objectors filled the town hall’s council chamber to voice their anger at the plans.

Esplanade Grande resident Peter Coles said: “THis proposal is seriously flawed. I ask the committee to question the haste and legitimacy of this application.

“Policies are established by councillors and are based on detailed officers’ resports – in this case the pros and cons of building and maintaining new toilets against refurbishing and properly maintaining the underground facility.

“Madam chair, there has been no such discussion and we have written statements that officers were unwilling to prepare financial and technical reports as this is a ‘non-contentious, common sense decision’."

His wife, Jean Coles, said the planned toilets and new foreshore office – with the existing one knocked down to make room for the loos – would see the toilet

block extending 50 per cent outside the existing building’s footprint.

Alan Taylor, of Kings Court, said: “THe location is totally and utterly wrong. It’s at the end of THe Esplanade. Why is it not in the middle, opposite the car park where no-one will have any objections.”

Bognor Regis Civic Society deputy chairman Hugh Coster said: “THe justification Arun are using to do this is that there is no disabled access to the closed underground toilets.

“An access could be provided through a doorway let into the northern wall of the promenade to the toilets. THey are more or less the same height as THe Esplanade and the ramps to the seafront are nearby.”

Cllr Pat Dillon told the committee: “THe big thing that has got up my nose is that we have not been consulted upon – and I think that is wrong.

“Arun should have put the plans in after they had consulted with everybody, as they have done with the Regis Centre and Hothamton sites.”

He warned the four toilet compartments planned were not enough compared to some 20 in the underground toilets.

THis would lead to ‘an endless queue’ of people wanting to go to the toilet.

Cllr Jeanette Warr said: “Arun have plans for our seafront and they have not consulted with us at all. THat’s a disgrace.”

Cllr Sandra Daniells said: “We would all agree that having modern toilets is a good thing. But it is a worry Arun will use this design to influence the regeneration.

“We are being asked to make a decision on a building which will be on the seafront for a long, long time."

SHOPS and flats could be created from a former Bognor Regis youth centre.

Arun District Council has applied for planning permission to carry out the works at 18 Waterloo Square and 75 High Street. THe council-owned premises were used from the 1990s until last year by the Number 18 youth centre but have since stood empty.

Phil Brown, Arun's planning agent, says in a statement: "THe proposals comprise the change of use of the upper (first and second) floors of an existing building, together with some relatively minor changes to the elevations at ground floor level, first floor level and second floor level.

"THe proposed external alterations would be relatively minimal and would not adversely affect the appearance or setting of the building or have an adverse impact on the conservation area in which it is located.

from High Street would be removed and a new access formed to the east elevation.

On the ground floor, the shop facing Waterloo Square would comprise 53.7sq m and the unit facing High Street would be 21.7sq m.

"An appropriate design approach has been taken with this proposal to provide two new units of residential accommodation in a highly sustainable town centre location and also enable the ground floor area to be used for commercial use," says Mr Brown.

"THis proposal should be acceptable in principle and would not detract from the quality of the area or have any harmful impact upon the amenities of neighbouring residents."

Activist calls for taxi action

` Change to exams STUDENTS collecting their GCSE results around Bognor Regis next week will be among the first to receive new grades.

THe previous letter-based grades have been replaced by a 9 to 1 grading in a change made by the government as part of its work to create new and more rigorous exams.

THe new grades apply to English language, English literature and maths exams this year before the first exams for most other subjects in the next two years.

School standards minister Nick Gibb, who is also the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: “THis summer, pupils have taken exams in the new and reformed GCSEs in English and maths. THis is the culmination of a six year process of curriculum and qualifications reform, which has involved wide consultation with teachers, schools and universities.

"THe new GCSEs are more rigorous so that young people can gain the knowledge and understanding they need to succeed in the future and compete in an increasingly global workplace.

“Pupils collecting their maths and English GCSE results will see them graded from 9 to 1, rather than A*-G. "A new grading system was needed to distinguish between the old and the new reformed GCSEs. THe new grading system also provides stretch for the highest performers by showing greater distinction between the top marks.”

THe Silly Season comedy challenge is being held by the Making THeatre Gaining Skills Community Interest Company next week.

Workshops are being staged on Wednesday, THursday and Friday at its new home at Bognor Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane.

Arriving at their workshop on their nominated day, a team of up to five writers will be presented with the current newspapers to keep their material fresh.

THey will select articles which can be turned into comedy sketches to be performed by actors that day at 4pm at the centre.

Making THeatre director Hilary Strong said the event was a unique comedy writing project.

RESEARCH by a disability activist shows Arun District Council has failed to meet a government recommended deadline to help disabled taxi users.

Doug Paulley's work has shown the council is one of 17 in the south east who have no plans to create a register of wheelchair accessible taxis.

A change in the Equality Act last April means taxi drivers face a fine of up to £1,000 if they refuse to transport wheelchair users or attempt to charge them extra. But the law only applies to drivers on the lists, known as Section 167 lists.

Mr Paulley and charity Muscular Dystrophy UK have called on the government to make councils take their responsibilities seriously and to set a deadline for creating a list. He said the failure of the local authorities to act could allow taxi drivers to discriminate against wheelchair users.

"While conducting this research, it became clear that many councils simply didn't think to create them until prompted. I recommend disabled people and their allies raise the issue with their local council," he said.

Muscular Dystrophy UK's director of campaigns, care and information, Nic Bungay, said: "Taxis are not a luxury for disabled people - they often represent the only way to get them from A to B when public transport isn't accessible."

A spokesman for Arun District Council said compiling the list was voluntary.

"THe council has carefully considered this important issue and believe that we

have responded appropriately taking into account local circumstances," she said.

"In the Arun area, we are fortunate to have two highly valued organisations (Sammy and Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport) that are equipped to support people with disabilities. As such, the demand for transport of disabled passengers by taxis is less than in other areas."

She added no complaints about the matter had been received by Arun. THe council considered its drivers upheld high standards and its test ensured they were aware of disability and equality matters.

Community spirit trumps the day with thousands flocking to beach DONALD Trump and Kim Jong-un put aside their differences at the International Bognor Birdman.

THe controversial leaders of the USA and North Korea staged a joint entry complete with missiles which promptly sank without a trace off the town's pier.

THe winning twosome in the competitions Kingfisher class, aka Tim Slingsby and Chris Walsh, were suitably dressed with wigs, fake tan and headgear.

Former university friends, they collected the £500 first prize in the category and used their entry to raise money for Water Aid. Tim said: "I only found out I was doing the Birdman on Friday night as it was a surprise 40th birthday present! My friends seem to make it their mission in taking it turns to dress me up. I'm not really bothered about the jump, my biggest concern was the Trump outfit!'

THe handful of Kingfisher entries were judged on their flamboyant costumes to the delight of the thousands of people who gathered on the beach and prom in glorious weather on Sunday.

THe event opened on Saturday with a shorter flying programme - and only took place at all thanks to a £6,000 last minute sponsorship from THe Cheeky Panda bamboo tissue company added to £4,000 raised by well wishers.

Chris Forbes, the co-founder of the company, said: "With such beautiful weather, imagine if it hadn't gone ahead on a day like today. THe Cheeky Panda is a community brand so we're all for community spirit and the event is a great representation of our brand with craziness."

One of the most anticipated moments was seeing Sam Penney from Yapton with

his flying machine, Zephyrous 2, perform in the Leonardo Da Vinci category.

However, the flight didn't go to plan at the start when the back broke as the team moved the craft on to the pier and it took around 45 minutes to fix.

Sam said: "We had some problems but nothing a bit of tape and string couldn't fix!

We're pleased with the whole performance.

We had hoped to get to 2km but on the whole it went well. " Sam had designed the £1,500 pedalpowered machine and aerospace engineer Scott Wallis flew it. Scott said: "THere was a bit too much flex on the wings and I couldn't get as much power. We will be back next year."

THe duo bagged the £1,000 jackpot with a distance of 38.5m But the longest distance was again claimed by reigning champion, and regular attender, Ron Freeman, from Northumberland.

Ron who competed in the Condor class, held on to his title with a victory of 71.5m and 10.03 seconds in the air which was a huge improvement on Saturday's performance of just 48m.

"After Saturday's attempt I was terrified as the air felt very rough. Today was incredible - the smoothest non-technical flight I have ever done.

"Last year I managed 97m because there was a 12 knot wind. I don’t mind this year as it's not so windy hence the shorter distance," he said.

"As I approached the water I looked to my left and there was a seagull flying next to me. We both looked at each other. I can imagine him thinking 'those are big wings' and he flew off. It was a special moment!

"It means everything to me to retain my

title. I just love to fly.

"I’m not a millionaire but I have one hell of a life. I've been coming since 1997 and I hold the record for Eastbourne, Worthing and Bognor Regis. I feel like a Birdman now."

Stuart and Debbie Pegg travelled from Norwich to see the event.

Debbie said: "We're staying in Wickham for ten days and saw the Birdman advertised in a guide so we thought we'd come to Bognor and see what it's like.

"It's great, typical English fun. THe beach is lovely here, we've already been for a little paddle and had some chips."

Co-organiser and participant, Sarah Boote-Cook dressed as a Fairy Godmother for her jump in the Kingfisher Class.

She said: "My fellow organiser, Jim said on THursday 'I think you should fly' and that's why I am here. I've done it three times before and I won in 2015 and came 2nd last year. I haven't had chance to fundraise so I’m in it to win it."

Sarah came second in the category but won a trophy for the funniest moment.

She said: "Two little girls, about eight and five came up to me and they really believed I was the Fairy Godmother so I gave them my wings. THey were delighted!"

After the event Sarah said: "What an amazing weekend we had. THe Pier was full, the seafront was full, the beach was full and the skies were full. My heart is full.

"It was fabulous to see Birdman so well supported and loved, the town did us proud. Roll on next year's event on August 11 and 12."

` Play centre plans A PERMANENT change of use has been proposed to create a softplay facility in Bognor Regis.

MiniLight Leisure Services Community Interest Company has applied to Arun District Council for planning permission for the centre in Durban Road.

Arun granted temporary approval for the scheme - for pre-school children - in February 2016.

Andrew Clark, of MiniLight, says in a statement to the council: "We are predominantly trying to fulfil a need in the local community.

"However, we are aware that what we provide is unique in the Arun and Chichester areas and this may prove to be an attraction for people to come from elsewhere."

He adds that customers have been travelling from Portsmouth, Purbrook and Worthing to enjoy the fun that is being provided.

THe unit is an industrial/storage unit likely to have been used as a vehicle repair workshop.

THe volunteers in Aldwick Preservation Society are staging an open morning at the beauty spot to explain their work to interested residents and recruit new members.

Michael set for new pastures A NEW name and a new pastor have signalled a big change at a Bognor Regis Christian group.

BigLove Church has become BigLove Fellowship and will be led by Pastor Tony Nova.

He is taking over the ministry from its founder and pastor of 12 years, Michael Johnson.

Pastor Tony comes with 20 years experience and has been based in Guildford. He has also worked in prisons alongside troubled young women.

He has spent the past two years working alongside Pastor Michael to become familiar with the town.

He said: "I feel excited and privileged to be given the leadership in BigLove and to continue the good works that have been established by Pastor Michael.

"We are praying that people will donate to BigLove afresh as we cannot move forward whatsover without any financial backing of some sort.

"Before, it was Pastor Michael who personally funded its work 80 per cent of the time."

BigLove has been closed since the start of this month but will re-open soon at the Jeneses Art Centre in Linden Road.

Its services will resume on Wednesday evenings with one Sunday morning service a month.

THe social side of the fellowship will be revived as well.

Pastor Michael said: "I will be training up the new team to tackle the poverty we see on our streets.

"We will resume our BigLove dinners, our food parcel services and also our clothing. THere will still be mentors and

counselling for those who fit the criteria for it."

Pastor Michael will be taking the BigLove ministry abroad to build on his initial work in Kenya, as reported in the Post last year.

Foundations for Life in the African country is a project for street people who live in ghettoes. It is based in Nairobi Nakuru and Eldoret.

His first stop, however, will be Aceh in Indonesia. He will be helping to rebuild and regroup a church that was attacked and burnt to the ground in an incident that saw its senior pastor murdered.

"Christianity is not the leading religion in Indonesia and many pastors have been attacked or imprisoned," he said.

Pastor Michael says he believes his calling has led him there. He is confident of his safety.

He believes working in Bognor Regis and for BigLove in the town has been a good training ground for future work in places that are less stable than British society.

"I think my background and my past ten years of experience make me perfect for this new role," he said.

"I have been to many deprived and troubled locations so I know how the ground lies. We also have a project in Ukraine, which was technically a war zone."

He added that working with people in Bognor Regis had been an honour and a pleasure and one he would miss.

THe Post reported in June that Mr Johnson was cleared by a jury after a five-day trial at Portsmouth Crown Court of alleged fraud. His son was also cleared of fraud and another charge of money laundering.

Film-makers could be next Oscar winners

by Fiona Callingham HOLLYWOOD could be the destination for a Bognor Regis film production company.

Its short film, Malefaction, has been selected to be shown at the prestigious Aesthetica Short Film Festival this November.

THe five-minute piece was jointly created by two West Sussex production companies Paean Films and Phoenix Rising Media, the latter based in Linden Road in Bognor Regis.

THe Aesthetica Short Film Festival is highly regarded within the industry and has connections with both the BAFTAs and the Academy Awards. Success at the festival could not only lead to cash prizes but recognition from big names in the business.

For the producer of Malefaction and founder of Phoenix Rising Media, 24-yearold PJ Saysell-Rosales, this was extremely exciting.

He said: "It's great news for all of us. It's quite a big thing. Aesthetica need a good reputation to maintain their relationships with Hollywood and the BAFTAs. "To know that our work is potentially BAFTA and Oscar worthy is so exciting."

With a modest budget of £2,000 provided by crew members, eight months of

planning and only one and a half days to shoot, the team managed to convey the story of a professional hit man's final job that impressed judges.

Although the film was set in Belfast, the locations were based in Bognor Regis.

PJ explained why this was important.

"I really fought with the director to film it all in Bognor Regis because there's so much here.

"THere's such a variety of locations and buildings from different periods. You've got the pier and the cinema and more modern structures, as well as a beach and green areas.

"And I want to give other companies scope to film in this area," he said.

PJ is also keen that film-making in Bognor Regis should continue to grow. For this reason, he is organising the first South Coast Phoenix Film Festival that is set to take place next year.

He said: "We are setting up a film festival in Bognor Regis to allow everyone to show their work and develop their skills."

Entries will be welcomed later this year along with applicants for film workshops that Phoenix Rising Media will also soon provide.

ADAMANT councillors in Bersted have rejected £20,000 from a telecoms company.

THey unanimously told Britannia Towers they were uninterested in taking the money to site a mobile phone mast on the council’s land.

THe company has to move an existing mast in North Bersted to make way for more housing. Its preferred location is a site on Jubilee Fields.

It said it was willing pay £20,000 for the 10m X 10m piece of land in the top left corner of the open space plus an access route from the site’s car park. THe offer extended to a further £1,000 plus VAT towards legal fees.

But Cllr David Lainchbury said: “We should say big no thank you to this. I know £20,000 is £20,000 but a significant number of the general population are unhappy about phone masts.

“I know we rely on them but, for this parish council to be seen to be putting it on its land, would be inviting a huge amount of trouble."

Cllr Jim Heaton said: “Once we have lost this land, we have lost it forever."

Cllr David Meagher said: “THis mast would be a complete blight on the landscape. In the summer, it might not be so bad, because the trees and the leaves would hide it, but it would be the first thing anyone sees there in the winter.

“THey have tried to make these trees look like masts but they don’t.”

Cllr Chris Barratt said: “With all the development about to come upon us, we should not be looking to sell part of one of the few green spaces we have."

Step back in time at the Flower Festival Wartime Songs this August bank holiday

LOVERS of horticulture and history will be in floral heaven this weekend with the Tangmere Flower Club’s first ever flower festival.

To mark the 100th birthday of Dame Vera Lynn the club are hosting a unique event that combines the best flowers of the 1940s with music and genuine memorabilia from the Second World War. Dame Vera Lynn’s most well-known songs will be played as visitors browse lovingly crafted floral arrangements created by talented members of the club.

See flowers arranged to the theme of each of her hits such as (THere’ll Be Bluebirds Over) THe White Cliffs of Dover.

THe club’s vice-chairman Brenda Atlee has herself created a display to convey the song THere’ll Always Be An England using red and white carnations to represent the St George’s flag.

To add to the visual impact of the festival the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum has generously loaned authentic wartime objects

such as parachutes, flying helmets, gas masks, fire buckets and kit bags.

So why not come along and delve into history while discovering the sights and smells of beautiful flowers?

Members of the club are hoping the festival will be enjoyed by as many people as possible.

Chairman Jean Wright said: “We hope our flower festival will inspire you.

A great exams result for The Regis School SIXTH former Connor Gormley helped THe Regis School celebrate its best A-level results.

Connor, pictured right, gained 3 A* grades when the outcomes of this summer's exams at the school in Bognor Regis were revealed.

His outstanding results in English literature, history and government and politics will enable him to go on to study English at Exeter University.

He said: "I am ecstatic with my results.

I would give THe Regis School sixth form five stars if it was on Trip Advisor!

"I have really enjoyed the act of studying and this reflects the quality of teaching that I have received."

Yesterday's publication of the exam results saw half of all the grades achieved at the school reach the highest A*-A level.

Some two-thirds - or 65 per cent - of students were awarded A*-B grades and 82 per cent gained A*-C grades.

THe 49 per cent of grades at A*-A was a rise of 15 per cent from last year and double the percentage from two years ago. At A*-C grades, the rise on 2016 was 13 per cent.

Siobhan Hook, the school's head of sixth form, said: "THese best-ever results are well-deserved by an incredibly hardworking and able year group who have shown an excellent commitment to their studies. I am immensely proud of them and would like to wish them every success in their chosen university and career choices."

Among the other students whose results

were highlighted by the school were: * Esme Picton - A* in sociology, A in history and B in English literature who intends to study English at Leeds University. She said: "I am really happy and overjoyed with my results. I felt really supported by my teachers and have really enjoyed my time in the sixth form." * Julie Malinowska - A in maths, B in chemistry and B in history to go on to study law at Warwick University. She said: "I am highly surprised but in a good way about my results.

"Although I have found the sixth form studies stressful, I have felt very well supported by various staff and want to thank them."

Vocational performances at the school also saw continued outstanding performance, with 83 per cent of all grades equal to A*-A and 94 per cent achieving A*-C equivalent grades.

THe run of top results from the school's sports academy carried on with 36 D* and seven D grades. Health and social care and performing arts also did well.

THe vocational success included Ross Girling with triple D* in PE to enable him to study sport at the University of Chichester. He said: "I am overwhelmed and extremely happy with my results in sport."

Outstanding vocational results were also achieved by Alex Ralf and Emily Jays.

THe school's principal, Mike Garlick, pictured right, added his congratulations.

"Our sixth form students have once again showed that hard work pays off and

I am delighted that their commitment and talent has been recognised in these results. THese grades will allow them to go on to university or high level careers of their choice. We continue to offer a diverse range of Level 3 courses that meet the needs of our students.

Felpham grades rise CELEBRATION was in the air for students of Felpham Community College as their A-levels saw an increase in top grades from last year.

Of its sixth form pupils, 97 per cent achieved pass grades for their A-levels and BTECs, with an impressive five per cent rise in A*-A grade results.

THe results morning yesterday brought students and teachers together to share their success.

Head of sixth form Zoe Brixey was pleased to see hard-working students rewarded. She said: "It's really nice to see students who've worked so hard all year get the grades that they deserve."

For some, the results came as a complete surprise. Jessie Moon, aged 19, spoke of her reactions when opening up her grades which included an A in English language, an A* in media studies and a B in PE. "I was really not expecting these results, I'm so shocked. We will be going to the pub later to celebrate," she said.

One of her fellow English language students was similarly delighted. 18-yearold Ashleigh Heasman received B grades in history, geography and English language.

She said: "It's amazing that I've got a B in history. To go from a D at AS-level that's such a big jump. My hard work has paid off."

It was also an exciting time for staff.

Ashleigh and Jessie's English language teacher Jane Constantine enjoyed being with them to see the results for the first time. "I'm really happy for them, especially as I've taught some of them for four years.

THey are all such hard-working students," she said.

Many students already knew where their education would continue after sixth form.

Mitchell Cane, 18, pictured above right, received a distinction* in BTEC sports,

an A* maths, a C in physics and an A in biology. He said: "I've already received confirmation from Loughborough University to study maths which feels really great."

19-year-old Chloe Martin was pleased with her A in maths and geography and A* in business studies. "I'm over the moon. I will be studying business management in Southampton this year,"she said.

For headteacher Mark Anstiss, the results were a testament to the college's dedication to success. He said: "Considering there are changes with some of the A-levels this year it's great that our top end grades have improved.

"As a school we are trying to focus on raising students' achievements all the time. It's nice today to see the fruits of their labours.

"So far all students bar two have been accepted into university and they will get in via access courses which is great."

New golf course work to begin within weeks f Action from last year's event

Special day lined up for Pagham SIGNIFICANT numbers of historic, classic and military vehicles should be displayed in Pagham on Sunday.

THe line-up will be one of the main features of Pagham on Parade.

THey will include a 1927 model AA Stutz five-litre straight-eight OHC car owned by a Pagham resident. THe vehicles will be on show from 11am4pm in the events paddock next to Pagham Village Hall on Pagham Road.

One of the organisers, Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall, said: "THere will be the usual entertainment area in the hall grounds, with an exciting variety of music and dance displays.

"THere will be a very short commemorative dedication by the

Arun cabinet member for neighbourhood services Cllr Paul Wotherspoon said: "I am looking forward to the opening of this fabulous new facility in Hotham Park which will be a great attraction for both our residents and visitors to enjoy."

Over the final bank holiday weekend of August the lower lawns of the castle will be home to the tented encampments of five renowned living history groups.

Many individual historical reenactors will also reflect over 12,000 years of local and castle history with crafts, costume, and combat displays.

THere will be an exciting opportunity to meet characters from the Stone Age as well as Roman gladiators, Norman crusaders, 14th and 15th century

knights, Georgian smugglers and the Victorian working classes.

Castle Manager Stephen Manion is excited to see the return of the History in Action weekend.

He said: “Arundel Castle has such a rich history, this year celebrating its 950th anniversary, and we love sharing this with visitors.

"THis event, taking place at the finale of the Arundel Festival, is a celebration of both the Castle and the wider history of Sussex, and promises to be a spellbinding journey through the past.

However, will he be able to catch Vanity in time before the kingdom crumbles?

THe show is an exciting time for its writer and director Jason Green. Bognor Regis based Jason, aged 25, has been performing since the age of three and has always loved pantomimes.

He said: "For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to write a pantomime.

"I was lucky enough to be given my big break on stage by the late John Spillers, the man who brought pantomime to Bognor.

To now follow in his footsteps is a huge honour."

As well as starring an array of local talent, including Spirit FM's Simon Fielding, all profits from the show will go towards Prostate Cancer UK. Simon, who will be playing the role of Sir Lancelot, is honoured to be able to help the charity. He said: “It’s great to be supporting Prostate Cancer UK, a worthwhile cause that affects so many families. To give something back to them, is a huge honour.”

Call to bring songs to Chalcraft Hall Care Home this Christmas SELFLESS children will have the chance to make Christmas extra special for the residents of Chalcraft Hall Care Home in Bersted this year.

As part of the exciting Post Wonderland campaign children from around Chichester and Bognor Regis are being invited to help raise holiday spirit by raising their voices.

THe team at Post Newspapers hopes to see as many as children as possible take part in a carol singing mission to bring traditional Christmas songs to care homes around the area.

THe campaign is being generously sponsored by Regis Renovations who hope it can bring some Christmas magic into care homes in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Residents from the Chalcraft Hall Care Home are excited to be a part of this scheme.

Sara Whitworth, the home’s deputy manager, explained what the carols could mean for those in the home.

She said: “We are all so pleased to be a part of this, it’s such a good cause.

“It is so exciting for the residents and will be lovely for them to meet the children taking part.

“THey love music especially around Christmas time, and to have it sung live to them will be so special.

“We’ve never had anything like this before.”

Chalcraft Hall offers care for people over the age of 65 years, however they specialise in caring for dementia patients.

THey provide a vital service to those in need of help, whether continually or intermittently. By specialising in dementia care the staff at Chalcraft have ensured they have the highest level of understanding for their patients which is only aided by the friendly atmosphere of the home.

Since Sara started working at Chalcraft Hall last year she has witnessed the benefits of this affectionate relationship between both residents and staff. She said: “It’s a really fun-filled place to work.

We’re all like one big family.”

Fun and entertainment are always a consideration at Chalcraft Hall. Twice

a week live music is provided and their caring staff bring quizzes, bingo, dancing, music therapy and much more to the residents who look forward to the different activities.

Now with the promise of music from Post Wonderland choirs the residents and staff of Chalcraft Hall have something else to look forward to this winter.

Sara said: “THis will make Christmas for them.”

MACMILLAN Cancer Support was in Bognor Regis to offer free advice and support last Wednesday.

THe charity's bus, Bertie was parked in Place St. Maur and a gazebo on the corner of London Road.

Former cancer specialist nurse Jane Douglass, a Macmillan mobile information and support specialist, said: "We can come in to the heart of the community our service and help everybody and anybody.

"People often don't even know where to go or start with advice and support, and we reach out and help signpost them to local services.

"Despite the terrible weather, we've still had a few people pop over to have a chat or get some information. It can always be hit and miss, especially with people giving you a wide berth when they think you're after donations instead!"

THe bus offers mobile information and support services, with a huge catalogue of leaflets and comfortable seating to help families, friends or people with a recent or existing diagnosis.

Logistics support officer Karen Clark, pictured below right, was also on hand on the day to manoeuvre Bertie and offer support, and said: "It's a great feeling that when we leave here we have left people knowing where they can turn to get help and support locally. Even if just one person comes to see us, it's a result."

THe bus not only provides support and information but also helps raise awareness. Both Jane and Karen were handing out special Macmillan cards labelled Signs and Symptoms of Cancer which unfold to show what women and men should look out for on separate sides with diagrams and information and contact information.

Jane said: "It's really important that we're not only helping people with an existing condition but making people aware of what symptoms to look for. An early diagnosis saves lives."

YOU'LL be forever blowing bubbles with this year's Bubble Rush in aid of St Wilfrid's Hospice.

THis four kilometre fun run with a difference sees participants journey through piles of different coloured foam to reach the finish line.

Taking place at the Chichester High School, live entertainment and children's activities will also be available ensuring that it's fun for all the family.

Along the route will be four foam cannons that each shoot out up to four feet of coloured bubbles.

As a fun event it is open to everyone from serious runners, to joggers and families with young children. THere's no time limit so just enjoy the experience.

At the finish line everyone will receive a special Bubble Rush medal to match the t-shirt they will be given when

entering.

Organisers are hoping that each entrant can raise £30 each on top of their entry fee to ensure as much money as possible can be raised to continue the vital work of the hospice.

Event organiser Helen Humphry was excited that this Bubble Rush could be even more popular than last year's which saw 790 people take part.

She said: “We really want to beat the success of last year’s event so we’re asking the local community to come out and support this fun, family event to raise money towards the vital work St Wilfrid’s does in our local community. Last year’s event was such a fantastic day.”

THe Bubble Rush will be taking place on September 2 with two races available at 12.30pm or 1.30pm.

A PIECE of potentially life-saving equipment will be bought with money from Bersted’s residents.

Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance will purchase the item with the £250 from Bersted Parish Council to relieve blocked airways in the patients it attends.

Chris Mayhew, a volunteer with the air ambulance, received the grant. He said: “One of the first things the doctor and paramedic on the air ambulance do when they arrive on site is to sedate the patient and relieve their airways.

“THis money will be a very sizeable donation towards one of those items. All of us may well need the air ambulance.

“We don’t receive any money from the lottery or the government and it costs over £6.5m a year to keep our two helicopters airborne.”

Another cheque for £250 was presented to Bognor Regis 2351 Air Training Corps Cadets. President Maureen Wilson said: “We will put this towards some drums because our band has started up again and we need new drums.”

Victim Support received £100 for its work. Lisa Domican, its West Sussex service development manager, said: “THis will really help us to give support to the people who need it.

“THat support varies tremendously. It can be emotional support or with social services or a domestic abuse service.”

She read out a testimony from a woman who credited the charity with saving her life after she had suffered sexual abuse and mental illness.

A further £250 went to THe Base Skatepark. Founder Janina Cooper said: “THis is going to go towards air conditioning for our café where parents and our children go to cool down in hot weather.”

THe 39 Club in Bognor Regis received £250. Vicky Hennessy, its committee chairman, said the money would be spent on repairs to make a shed in its grounds usable.

"Our club is going from strength to strength. We've got six boys who have turned up week after week from day one."

Cllr Brian Knight, the council’s chairman, pictured below middle, said: “We are very pleased to give you money.

Unfortunately, we can’t give you as much as you would like but we don’t get as much as we would like.”

Another £100 grant was awarded to Arun and Chichester Citizen’s Advice. No-one from the charity was able to attend the presentation last week.

Sir, I WOULD like to bring to your readers attention the comments made by Mr Hawkins regarding the closure of Boots' photo lab at Bognor Regis – (Bognor Regis Post August 11, Page 7) and the fact that people will have to go to Chichester.

May I suggest he tries the Sussex Camera Centre at 53 High Street, Bognor Regis.

It is a well-established family run business which has been in the town for many years. THe staff under manager John Dominick have a wealth of professional experience and they have a processing facility there to match any of the UK’s major processing laboratories.

What also is more important is that they provide equipment to established professionals and to many of the region's camera club members.

THey are not just there to sell they are there to advise which in this day and age is so unique. John's team have a working knowledge of the photographic industry.

I am sure if Mr Hawkins paid them a visit they would meet all his processing requirements.

As an established professional photojournalist myself, (still often using film as a working format) I can re-assure him and your readers that they will receive a quality service equal to none that encompasses all aspects of modern technology.

A BRAND new term awaits Bersted Community Choir.

THe singers begin their new sessions on September 5 with an end of year festive showcase spectacular firmly in their sights.

Formed in 2014 with only 11 members, the choir has grown to be 60 members strong.

Based at the New Bersted Park Community Centre, Lakeland Ave, the choir meets from 7pm-8.30pm every Tuesday. With a repertoire

ranging from Dream a Little Dream and You Raise Me Up to Happy and Bohemian Rhapsody, there's something for everyone who has an interest in singing and making new friends.

Most importantly, there is no audition and everyone, no matter what their singing ability, is invited to join.

PEOPLE with learning disabilities supported by the Aldingbourne Trust will be managing the revival of a popular project.

THey will be involved in fitting newly engraved slats to the long bench on Littlehampton seafront and maintaining the bench.

THe slat engraving scheme was relaunched by Arun District Council on Monday after a five year gap.

It was originally started to commemorate a loved one or to record a special message, such a marriage proposal, which was inscribed into a slat on the bench.

Its revival is due to interest from the community and visitors who are keen to see the scheme up and running again.

Peter Stanley, the trust's general manager, said: "We are very excited to be involved in this project - we look forward to working with the local community and visitors to Littlehampton."

THe trust's wood department is working with Arun to ensure the most cost-effective approach for managing and maintaining the long bench to ensure it will continue to look its best.

Arun economic regeneration officer Phil Graham said: "It is fantastic that the long bench slat engraving scheme is being relaunched and we are looking forward to reading all of the new messages. We are really pleased to be working with such a valued partner as the Aldingbourne Trust to see the scheme develop and help to promote everything Littlehampton seafront has to offer."

An education for your tastebuds with Cécile Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

CHAMPAGNE Cécile was back in town last week and hosted with her customary aplomb the Chichester M&S's winetasting session.

Cécile Bergart of Hampshire Wine School is always entertaining and proceeded to focus mainly on good food and wine pairings with level of acidity being a major factor to consider.

THe 2016 Musica en el Camino Monterriei DO Godella from the erstwhile overlooked north-west of Spain sitting on the border with Portugal in the Ourense province of Galicia.

THis is an up-and-coming region for whites with fairly high acidity and thus a good pairing with goats' cheese, is distinctly aromatic with wild flower and lime notes and also an ideal accompaniment to sardines or marinated prawns.

THe current offer of 25 per cent off six bottles means that you can purchase this wine for under £7.50 and it is worth a punt.

On the next tongue-in-cheek premise of Cécile that men do not like certain colours, she duly extolled the versatility

of rosé wines with their terracotta gleaming in the sun and introduced an underrated lesser known appellation from sunny Provence.

THis took the form of a 2016 Côteaux Varois En Provence - a pale, fresh style of rosé with strawberry fruit and floral notes (herby grass) and an ideal apéritif or a great complement to summer salads or fish.

We were given artichokes to accompany this wine and the pairing was sublime - bravo Cécile! For an offer

price, if one of six, of under £5 this is indubitably a good buy.

Red wines were next on the agenda and a Sicilian wine in the form of an Etna 2015 Doc Rosso from the rich volcanic soils of Mount Etna, a blend of local varieties which has spicy truffle and red berry aromas with cranberry, plum and strawberry flavours on the palate, provides a fine accompaniment to lasagne or a juicy t-bone steak. THe offer price is circa £8.25 and this is one well worth a try.

THe next red wine was of Spanish provenance from Yecla in Southern Spain, namely the 2015 Tapa Roja Old Vines Monastrell with Monastrell being the Spanish name for the Rhône variety Mourvèdre and the mature old bush vines grown at 750 metres produce concentrated flavours.

THis is undoubtedly my wine of the week available at an offer price of just £6.75 and is delectably aromatic with light cherry and plum and blackberry

INGREDIENTS • 290g roasted red peppers, drained • 270g cherry tomatoes, halved • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 vegetable stock cube • 1 tsp paprika • 1 tbsp olive oil • 4 tbsp ground almonds

fruit flavours and is full-bodied with hints of tea, leather and lavender - a wine to savour with steak or other meaty dishes and one to stock up upon post haste!

Two recommendations - the 2015 Paso Robles Shiraz from the USA has ripe red fruits and great intensity of flavour and at an offer price of £7.50 is worth a go and the 2015 Mâcon - Villages for the same offer price is a veritable crowd pleaser.

Hot 'n' spicy roasted red pepper & tomato soup

Method 1. Put the roasted red peppers in a blender with the cherry tomatoes, garlic, vegetable stock cube, 100ml water,

paprika, olive oil and ground almonds. Blitz until smooth, season well and heat until piping hot before serving.

INGREDIENTS • 400g strong wholemeal bread flour • 100g spelt flour • 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast • 1 tbsp black treacle • oil, for greasing • 50g mixed seeds (we used pumpkin, sunflower, poppy and linseeds) • 1 egg yolk, loosened with a fork

Seeded wholemeal loaf

Method 1. Combine both flours in a large bowl with the yeast and 1 tsp fine salt. Mix the treacle with 250ml warm water until well combined.

Stir into the flour to make a slightly sticky dough. If you need to add more water, splash it in 1 tbsp at a time.

2. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 10 mins (or in a tabletop mixer for 5-7 mins). Your dough should be smooth and elastic when it’s ready.

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, flip the dough over to coat it in oil, then cover with a sheet of oiled cling film. Leave in a warm place until doubled in size – this will take about 1 hr (see note, below). Lightly oil a 900g loaf tin.

3. Once doubled in size, knead the dough again for 3-5 mins to knock out the

air bubbles – add most of the seeds and work these into the dough as you knead. Shape the dough into an oval roughly the same length as your tin.

Place in the tin and leave to prove, covered with oiled cling film, for 30-45 mins until it has nearly doubled in size again. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

4. Gently press a finger into the loaf to check if it has had enough proving time (see tip). When it’s ready, glaze the top of the loaf with the egg yolk and sprinkle over the remaining seeds. Bake in the oven for 40-45 mins until golden brown – if you tip the loaf out of the tin and tap the bottom, it should sound hollow.

Leave to cool on a wire rack for at least 30 mins before slicing.

Plaques recall notable residents of our town

The lives of dozens of individuals are featured in new book AS WE tour any village, town or city we may come across a blue plaque which we understand is something that records, in most cases, a person of note. I recently became involved in research on this subject and found a large amount of information.

Originally, a London scheme founded in 1866, it is believed to be the oldest in the world. However, from 1986, it has been organised by English Heritage and is a unique means of linking people and places.

Interestingly, there have been many changes since the early days and now these plaques are recorded online on the Open Plaques site which can be viewed on openplaques.org. THey document the historical links between people and places.

As a result of my research and others in our town it was decided to include this information in a leaflet by the Bognor Regis Local History Society's museum. Like with many things, once you start you find more and more information and this was certainly the case here.

THe final book covers the area between Felpham and Pagham and is on sale in the museum in West Street for £4.50 and would form the basis of a stroll around our area to discover the interesting people or places that are commemorated.

Besides blue plaques, we located a variety of other plaques and features that celebrate people or events, and decided to include them alongside a few foundation stones and, therefore, the book is divided into numerous sections as follows: blue plaques – alphabetically – Arun District Council and Aldwick Parish Council and then people plaques, foundation stones and, finally, memorial plaques.

I have shown here just a very few of the plaques included in this 40-page, A5 book. It contains information on 45 people and places with over 85 full colour pictures: James William C. Fegan (1852–1925) - THis sign, high on the end wall of Mountbatten Court, facing Belmont Street, commemorates the beginning of James Fegan’s work helping destitute and homeless young people.

James was here to convalesce and met with a young child and, hearing his story, he returned to London and founded orphanages for boys. THe organisation still operates and Fegan’s works with vulnerable children and continues with its Christian origins.

William Ward Higgs (1866–1936) - He spent many summers here with his family and was responsible for the words and music of Sussex by the Sea in 1904–5, the unofficial anthem of the county.

It was composed for the marriage of a favourite sister-in-law to an officer in the Royal Sussex Regiment and became the marching song of the regiment during the First World War. His best known composition was adopted by Brighton & Hove Albion FC in 1910. Location: Hollywood House, Bersted Street, Bognor Regis.

Charles Osborn – THe drinking fountain on West Street, on the wall by the Unicorn and Methodist Church, was erected by the Friendly Societies of Bognor in 1886. Charles Osborn was cited as the ‘oldest member of the medical profession in Bognor’ in his obituary when he died. THe Bognor and Bersted Friendly Society, founded in 1833, was an early form of assurance society dispensing benefits to the poor for sickness and death.

J & Black - THis brown plaque on the north facing wall of the pavilion at the east end of the Marine Park Gardens has always intrigued me. It was placed there in 1972 but to date I have never found any further information as to whom these people were. Do you know?

Since the production of this book it is interesting to see how many changes have to be made as a result of the weather, or a change of location. Our reference to the Mulberry Harbour stone on Pagham in which we note the condition of the plaque has been superceded by its removal after the erosion of the beach which affected the boulder to which the plaque was fixed.

A new replacement black and gold plaque replaces the original image for the Wade's Clock. Additionally, the plaque for HMS St Barbara on the pier was moved to the rear of the building, but soon will have a new location on THe Esplanade. THe interesting

plaque for the airmen who lost their lives in Felpham has also been moved and provided with a new site on Sea Road in Felpham. You could take a look to find these new sites.

Within weeks of completing the book, a number of new plaques have come to light.

THere are now suggestions for new blue plaques around the town. When looking at the history of the town it is interesting the people who have not been recognised with a plaque, for example, William Fletcher, a man whose name is mainly connected with a school being named after him.

It is long since gone and replaced by THe Regis School. He was a major benefactor in the town and lived in Hotham Park House. What about William Tate, who was responsible for much of the building work in the town in the early 1900s?

Did you know that Gandhi visited the town and, of course, there are many personalities who could be recorded. We have Tony Hancock with a blue plaque but how many others have been missed. THe person has to have died and have a specific connection to the town.

Sometimes people do great things when they have produced their first great work in the town and go on to do great things. One such is John Cyril Hawes. He constructed the White Tower in Bognor Regis, near the Royal Norfolk Hotel, but went on to design and build numerous churches and cathedrals in Australia where, due to the amount of work he is credited with, there is a John Cyril Hawes Heritage Trail. At a recent event in THe Regis Centre, more names were put forward.

More suggestions for future nominees will always be welcome.

Volunteers offer support to families facing a wide range of issues, such as loneliness and isolation, illhealth, depression, bereavement, relationship difficulties, multiple births, special needs, first time parenthood, domestic violence or disability. Visits take place weekly in the family’s own home. Volunteers are someone the family can talk to confidentially, they can play with the children or introduce ideas for activities; they could be an ‘extra pair of hands’ in everyday situations or accompany on outings to the park, library or toddler group. Volunteers can also give information on services and offer reassurance and understanding that bringing up children can be difficult.

Volunteers need to be parents themselves or have had 24-hour parenting experience (as a step-parent, adoptive parent or foster carer).

Event Fundraiser (Bognor Area) – RNLI The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea; they provide, on call, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. They are looking for volunteers to help with events for fundraising. This is totally flexible

and may be bucket collections, helping with fairs or RNLI box collections; perhaps involvement with events at the Lifeboat Station or Town parades and special events. Either occasional or regular commitment is acceptable. You must be over 18 for this role, and be reliable, trustworthy and keen to help.

Wildlife Surveys – Manhood Wildlife & Heritage Group Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group (MWHG) is a volunteer led charity dedicated to the preservation and restoration of habitats and heritage, and caring for the shared green spaces of the Manhood Peninsula.

They require volunteers to carry out a range of surveys including: Water Vole, Hedgerow, Pond and general habitat surveys. Full training will be provided and you’ll be working with other enthusiastic volunteers. This work is absolutely essential if we are to protect areas from development and preserve important areas for wildlife. It is an opportunity to develop specific wildlife survey skills, make new friends and care for nature.

First-Aid and Ambulance Aid Volunteers – St John’s Ambulance St John’s Ambulance provides first aid training to children, the general public and the workforce. They care and save lives at events and provide nationally recognised commercial training courses. They require more volunteers to train as first-aid volunteers or ambulance-aid volunteers.

Adult training is mainly on a Monday evening and is for over-18s. To become a volunteer you must complete training which will be provided. This is a time committed and membership volunteer role requiring you to complete 30 hours of training a year and 52 hours of duty.

Quick-hitting Abrahams stars as PostSport Middleton secure Hastings victory MIDDLETON CC chalked up their first win in a month thanks to a swashbuckling halfcentury from Gerhardt Abrahams.

After restricting Hastings & St Leonards to 189-9 in 50 overs, the South African star hit an unbeaten 75 in just 73 balls to fire Sean Heather's side to victory by six wickets.

THe victory lifts Middleton to fifth in the Sussex Premier League and guarantees their status in the division for another season.

THey will be hoping to build on that victory on the road tomorrow as they visit seventhplaced Preston Nomads (12pm).

THe foundations for last weekend's win were laid by an excellent bowling performance from Heather's side as they made the most of home conditions.

An excellent opening spell from Matt Cooke (2-33) set the tone as only Sussex player Harry Finch (64) offered resistance for Hastings.

Following Cooke's opening burst, Nick Smith (3-18) and Heather (3-34) made sure that the visitors did not reach 200.

THen it was over to wicketkeeper-batsman Abrahams, who took charge after Angus Robson (39) set the tone for the chase.

With able support from Heather (29) and

Patrick Colvin (22*), Middleton reached the total with plenty to spare to secure 28 points from the match.

In division two, Bognor are still in relegation trouble despite putting up a real fight against top of the table Ifield.

Batting first, skipper Max Ashmore scored 54 as his side reached 194-8 in 45 overs.

In reply, Bognor put in an excellent fielding performance registering three run outs as Ifield struggled to chase down the total until number seven Daniel Groves smashed 70 in 64 balls with two wickets to spare. Bognor return to the Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm), hosting St James's Montefiore and needing a win to lift them out of the drop zone.

In division three, Chichester Priory Park remain in contention to replace Bognor next term after chalking up a two wicket win against Preston Nomads seconds.

PAGHAM seconds made it five games without a win in Sussex Division Five West despite an inspired bowling performance from David Leader.

On a day when bowlers were clearly on top, the Nyetimber Lane side put West Chiltington & THakeham into bat.

Pagham's bowlers did not let the visitors settle taking wickets at regular intervals, with Leader stealing the headlines with 4-29.

But, in reply, the home team struggled with only Frederick Burgess (35) scoring more than 10 before they were bowled out for 95 to lose by 52 runs.

Pagham travel to second-bottom Findon seconds tomorrow looking for their first win since the start of July.

Tom Stride (2-19) was then the pick of the bowlers as they bowled out Crawley for 191 to register the victory.

In Division Six West, Bognor seconds' Jamie Woolnough hit an unbeaten 77 in vain as his side came up 12 runs short of Ifield second's target of 149.

Woolnough (3-29) and Sam Adams (5-38) restricted the visitors to the small target but no other Bognor player scored more than 16 as the number eight was left without partners when his side were skittled out for 137.

BOWLS: Chichester A continued their fine form with a 79-76 away victory at league leaders Worthing Pavilion A in division one of the West Sussex Bowls League.

THe win was Chi's fifth in a row and the six points taken from the match see them close the gap on Pavilion and Worthing as the season draws to a close. In the same division, Bognor A remain fourth despite losing to Southbourne 87-77.

Chichester A travel to Tarring Priory A tomorrow (2pm) while Bognor host the reverse fixture against Southbourne on Sunday (2pm).

Elsewhere, Selsey's Little Spain Bowling Club have their finals weekend tomorrow and Sunday with a 10.30am start on both days. Eight trophies are up for grabs.

CROSS COUNTRY: Chichester Runners rounded off a busy week with victory in the Totnes 10k thanks to James Baker.

Baker led home the field of 530 runners on the off-road undulating course along the River Dart in a time of 35 minutes 38 seconds while fellow Chi athlete Catherine Betters clocked 63:44 in 287th place.

A further Chi contingent tackled the 4.5 miles on top of Highdown Hill in Worthing for the latest round of the West Sussex Fun Run League.

Despite several falls, fortunately, no one suffered any serious injury and from the pics an enjoyable evening was had by all.

THe club finished in eighth place with 95 points with Graham Woodward (22nd – 25:52), David Knight (49th – 28:15), David Pike (54th – 28:28) and Mike Moorcroft (69th – 29.54) the best finishers.

Goulding bags brace as Selsey make it two wins from two

Pagham are on the charge PAGHAM laid down a marker to the leading contenders in the SCFL Premier by defeating much-fancied Horsham YMCA 4-0.

Goals from Scott Murfin, Josh Irish, George Cody and Calum Overton secured the win in what was the first league match for new jointmanagers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds.

After beating Arundel by the same score in the FA Cup on the opening day, it means their record reads two games, two wins, eight goals scored, zero against.

THe Lions now have their sights on progressing in the world's oldest knockout competition, welcoming Kent-based Sittingbourne to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) in the preliminary round.

Win and Pagham will earn the club a further ÂŁ1,925 in prize money - a healthy chunk of money for any side at step five football.

But they will have their work cut out as the visitors play in a division above the Lions and started their season in the newly-named Bostik South League with a 3-0 win over Herne Bay.

THe Lions then face a tricky trip to Loxwood on Tuesday in the Peter Bentley Cup second round.

After lifting the trophy on a memorable May afternoon last term, the Nyetimber Lane side will want to give a good account in defence of the title.

THey go into both matches full of confidence after chalking up two comfortable wins, particularly against Horsham YMCA, who featured former Lions Kieron Pamment and Joe Shelley in their team.

Pagham attacked from the off, though, with striker Scott Murfin proving to be a pest.

He opened the scoring after 20 minutes, converting a penalty after he had his legs taken from under him in the area.

THe lead was doubled ten minutes later when Josh Irish headed home.

Lions keeper James Binfield preserved the two-goal lead, producing a fine save to deny Sam Schaaf before the break.

THe second period proved to be largely without incident until subs Overton and Cody combined with the latter sweeping home. THen Overton converted a late penalty to seal the 4-0 win.

SELSEY'S Jake Goulding will be looking to continue his fine form into tomorrow's match against recently-relegated Hailsham Town after firing Steve Bailey's side to two wins out of two.

THe former Chichester City man scored twice as the Blues beat AFC Varndeanians 2-0 on the opening day of the SCFL Division One campaign.

Combined with a brace bagged in the 4-2 cup victory against Midhurst the week before, Goulding has now scored four times in two games since signing on at the High Street ground in August.

He and his Blues colleagues look to have a tougher task tomorrow when they host the relegated Stringers, who started their league campaign with a 3-2 win against Midhurst last weekend.

THen it is on to local rivals and SCFL Premier side Chichester City in the second round of the Peter Bentley cup on Tuesday at Oaklands Park (7.45pm).

With Goulding among a few Blues' players to have plied their trade for Chi, Selsey will have plenty of inspiration to record a cup shock.

Chi boss: season is still young Ne

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford says the club will find their feet soon, admitting the 'season is still young'.

It's been a difficult start to the campaign for the Oaklands Park side, losing after a long trip to Bracknell-based Binfield in the FA Cup on opening day.

THat was followed up with a 2-0 loss to Broadbridge Heath on Saturday in the first game of the SCFL Premier.

THings did not look promising on Tuesday, when the Lillywhites went 2-1 down to Arundel, a side that have recently struggled.

But Rutherford's side found their stride, securing a 5-2 victory thanks to goals from Josh Clack (2), Scott Jones (2) and former Arundel man Dave Herbert.

Next up is a return match against the Mullets, with Chi making the trip to Arundel tomorrow in the second round of the RUR Cup (3pm).

THen it's back home on Tuesday for a home match against SCFL Division One side Selsey in the Peter Bentley Cup (7.45pm).

Speaking after Saturday's loss, Rutherford said: "THe season is still young. We'll learn

from our mistakes and work hard to improve.

We're looking for the right style of play and we'll find it soon."

With many tipping Chi to equal or better the third place finish in the league last season, the opening day defeat at Broadbridge Heath was a surprise.

Rutherford's side, setting up with four in defence after the three at the back system did not work at Binfield, made the better start.

But after wasting a number of chances, it was the home side who took the lead.

Heath added to the goal in the second half and, despite having a penalty appeal turned down, Chi could not get back into the match.

Speaking after the match, Chi coach Danny Potter said: "One league game won't determine our season.

"We were disappointed to lose on Saturday, though we'll bounce back as a group. We have some quality players in our squad. It's now time to get these players playing together. And when they do, we'll be frightening." * Bosham get their SCFL Division Two season underway tomorrow on the road at Lancing United.

THe Robins lifted the title last year after leading the league for all but the first two weeks of the season. But, due to ground grading issues, they were unable to gain promotion from intermediate football.

THe club will be led by former Petersfield Town director of football Gary Lines.

Spotlight on Sids as campaign kicks off LIGHTS, camera, action...

Sidlesham will have all three of those things as the SCFL Division Two side get their new campaign underway this weekend.

A lot has been happening at the Recreation Ground this summer as chairman and manager Daren Pearce made the most of his first full summer at the club.

THe biggest change concerns the club's floodlights which are back working, meaning evening matches and training can be held by the Sids this year.

With the addition of under 18s and reserves sides for the new campaign, there is plenty to be optimistic about at the Rec. But most of the focus will be on the first team and whether, after a third placed finish

last time out, the Sids can go one better and lift themselves out of intermediate football.

Pearce's side start their campaign tomorrow on the road at Worthing Town, a side that finished third bottom last season.

THen it is on to a home match under the lights against Clymping on Tuesday (7.45pm), a game that will be the first competitive evening match at the Rec for a number of seasons.

While it may not seem much, the floodlights working against is a game-changer for the Sids as it was due to them not working that they were demoted from SCFL Division One two campaigns ago.

With things off the pitch now looking rosy, all Pearce needs is the results on the pitch.

Pearce wants Rocks to tighten up at the back after good start Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce admits he is delighted with how his side have started life back in National League South - although he admits the Rocks must do more to improve on their defensive record.

THe Nyewood Lane side currently sit fifth in the division, after chalking up an excellent 3-3 draw at Welling United followed by a 6-2 hammering of Sussex rivals Whitehawk.

THose results mean free-scoring Bognor have scored 14 goals in their four games so far.

But it is at the other end where Pearce is focusing his efforts ahead of tomorrow's home match with Weston-Super-Mare.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "From the point of view of the players' confidence and supporters enjoying a home game the start has been excellent.

"One of the main worries is playing four games and conceding nine goals.

"If any side needs to score three goals to win every game they will be in trouble as you will not always do that. We have got to try and get ourselves away from that situation.

"But it has been good entertainment. We realise we have got a lot of work to do to improve but overall it's been a good start."

A big part of Bognor's good start has been the form of the front pairing of Jimmy Muitt and Ollie Pearce.

Both netted in the 3-3 draw away at recentlyrelegated Welling United on Saturday.

Pearce then followed that up with a brace and three assists in the hammering of Whitehawk, with Jimmy Wild, Alex Parsons and Pat Suraci (2) rounding off the scoring.

THe Nyewood management admitted the form of both was excellent but said there were worries with Muitt being taken off after suffering a nasty leg injury on Tuesday.

With Dan Beck, Corey Heath, Harvey Whyte and Doug Tuck also doubts, Saturday's home clash with Weston could see the Rocks' small squad stretched to the limit.

Manager Jack Pearce said: "It's feasible that we will have five missing. THat would be a shame but it's a great opportunity for the boys who so far have been disappointed to get the opportunity to show what they can do.

"It's also a good test to see if we have the strength in depth to compete at this level. THe 11 you pick are always happy but the hardest bit is managing those players who are not in the starting line-up.

"If you only have a first 11 you won't win anything as you will get injuries, sickness, suspensions and loss of form so it's important to have a squad of players to cope with that."

Weston-Super-Mare are currently 18th in the 22-team division after winning only one of their four games so far.

Pearce said: "THey play 4-2-4 and are a good young side so it should be good entertaining game for the supporters."

"I didn't want Charman to go" THE SEASON may only be two weeks old but already Rocks fans will be facing a familiar dilemma at Nyewood Lane.

After the side picked up four injuries in Tuesday night's 6-2 win over Whitehawk, Bognor's small squad is set to be tested to the full in tomorrow's home match against Weston-Super-Mare.

THe task is made even harder after the departure of experienced centre half Gary Charman, who also served as an assistant manager. THe man known as 'Zorro' was wellregarded around the club, both inside and outside of the dressing room. But the lure of regular first team football and being reunited with former Rocks' boss Jamie Howell at Eastbourne Borough was too good to turn down.

Bognor manager Jack Pearce was clear on his thoughts He said: "We didn't want to lose Gary Charman. In a perfect world we would be keeping him but at his age he wants to be playing regularly and he wouldn't have got as much game time as he wanted when all four centre halves were fit.

"He has been an excellent player for the club - he's done really well and I'm as disappointed as anyone to lose him.".

WHO WOULD have imagined that after just four games we have won two and drawn two games (meaning eight points) to kick off our Vanarama National League South season?

I certainly didn’t think we’d have as many points so early in the season and I am sure the management team are really happy with our tally so far.

It's really impressive to see the team performing so well.

We are in the early days of course and we have a long way to go. But so far so good!

Bath City provided a fine test on opening day. A physical team that were clinical and fast moving at Nyewood Lane saw our team pegged back to 2-2 THen Ollie Pearce stepped up to score one of the best goals I have ever seen - fantastic!

I made the trip to Poole Town on the bigger coach (there were two that went to this midweek fixture) as part of the large Rocks following.

Once again, we saw the Rocks fighting spirit - after going 2-1 down thanks to a mix up after half time, Jimmy Muitt burst forward before smashing it low into the bottom corner.

It was a nice point to come away with when it could easily have been a loss.

Shortly after this, news of Gary Charman’s departure on loan to Eastbourne Borough was released.

It’s a shame that Charman has left to try and find game time but I can understand this given the young squad and the number of players we have in those defensive positions at present.

I hope we haven’t seen the last of ‘Zorro’, though, as he was immense last season and a big part of our promotion squad.

THe away trip to Welling United followed. THe Wings were looking for their first points of the season and finally got off the mark when it ended three-all.

Muitt gave us the lead but this was quickly cancelled out

by the hosts, who went ahead soon after.

Doug Tuck, who I thought played well and interlinked everything when Bognor did get the ball, scored the equaliser in a somewhat bizarre goal - his run and shot along the by-line somehow being pushed into his own goal by the goalkeeper. But it doesn’t matter how they go in!

A wonderful cross later on from Muitt found Pearce who stabbed it in from close range. We thought it was over - but it wasn’t to be as Welling equalised with a fine strike moments later.

Welling were fully deserving of their point and I don’t think they will be looking for their first win for too long.

THe general feeling after this game from the fans I sensed was relief! Apart from that, I quite enjoyed the visit and was impressed by the Welling facilities, especially two large seated stands.

With Bognor unbeaten, the pressure was back on at home to Whitehawk last Tuesday.

After falling behind 2-1 (again!) a rather dirty challenge by one of their goalscorers saw him sent off for lashing out at Pearce and then it was all systems go from there.

THe bonuses were that Jimmy Wild scored a headed goal, Parsons got on the scoresheet, Pearce added to his tally and then Pat Suraci came off the bench and scored two!

It was a real shame that Muitt had to come off after sliding in defending the ball - appearing to twist his whole leg in the process. He might miss tomorrow and was on crutches after receiving treatment.

On the positive side, we have netted 14 times and conceded nine already in only four games. THere’s never a dull moment at the Lane, supporting the Green Army!
