Pleas to save hotel rejected LAST-DITCH bids to retain a historic Bognor Regis seafront hotel have failed.

Impassioned pleas to ensure The Royal Hotel was able to provide rooms for visitors were rejected.

The 8-4 vote, with one abstention, by Arun District Council members means a proposal to change use of the prominent building from a hotel to 18 flats was approved.

said she was totally against turning the hotel totally over to residential use.

“I just think this is a very sad day. It’s awful this is going to be flats, flats, flats.

“It is one of our character buildings in Bognor Regis, which is a Victorian building when others have been pulled down, and is the only one left as an hotel.

“It is a fantastic location, it really is, and we are so short of rooms in Bognor Regis. There ought to be a restaurant on

the ground floor. It used to thrive under its previous owners.”

Her comments at Wednesday’s meeting of Arun’s development control committee were backed by Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham). He said the views about Bognor Regis seafront had changed since the change of use was first debated in 2015.

“Arun are moving forward with their regeneration plans for the seafront. There is obviously a lot of talk about bringing

forward the seafront strategy. This building should form part of those plans.

“It is iconic in its site and it is located in a conservation area and one we should be fighting for as a council to seek to retain it as a facility to aid the regeneration of the seafront. We should be going back to the developer and saying come up with another plan."

Robin to tackle ride after cancer

CANCER survivor Robin Farrell will celebrate his 70th birthday by cycling nearly 50 miles for charity.

Aldwick resident Robin is among the 30,000 riders taking part in this year’s Prudential RideLondon 46 mile ride.

The route will be a shortened version of the 2012 Olympic race from the capital out into the Surrey countryside.

The ride starts in the Queen Elizabeth Country Park and ends on The Mall.

Robin, who has regular oncology check-ups after beating non-Hodgkin lymphoma, is looking forward to the occasion on July 30 – four days after he reaches 70.

He said: “I train as much as I can. I ride every day for five miles and I try to increase that. I run as well and do exercises.

“I’ve never done this ride before and I thought it was something different which would be nice to do.

“I expect it will take me about twoand-a-half hours. It’s not a race but you have to finish within four hours because the organisers have to re-open the roads to traffic.”

He is raising money for blood cancer charity Bloodwise, which is the ride’s charity of the year.

It was nine years ago that Robin, of the Aldwick Bay Estate, visited his GP with what he thought was a tumour in his abdomen.

Blood tests, scans and ultrasound examinations saw him diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The treatment that followed caused him to lose his body hair, experience nausea and vomiting and become depressed and anxious.

An infected catheter during his treatment saw him contract septicaemia and pneumonia.

He recovered and was prepared for a stem cell transplant which had to be cancelled because he was too ill.

“I had chemotherapy for five years and I was on death row. I’ve also got skin cancer. You’re never as fit after cancer as you were before.

“But you have to keep active and you have to keep positive. Being positive is the main ingredient to keeping fit and keeping active and keeping going,” he said. “You just push yourself to do as much as you can.”

Robin praised the treatment he had received from St Richard’s Hospital and Southampton General Hospital to help him recover.

EastEnders actor to open new charity shop in Rose Green ACTOR Christopher Timothy and his artist wife Annie will formally open a charity shop in Rose Green.

The EastEnders' cast member will declare the outlet for The Point officially open at 11am tomorrow.

The shop - at Avisford Terrace in Rose Green Road - is the charity's second to help its work providing leisure and social chances for physically disabled adults aged from 18-50 to prevent isolation.

John Watson, manager at The Point, said: "We are looking forward to declaring our new shop open.

"We are delighted that Chris and

Annie have agreed to do the honours.

Everyone is really looking forward to meeting them."

Christopher Timothy has long been one of the nation's favourite actors.

He recently joined the cast of primetime TV soap opera EastEnders as Ted Murray after starring in TV shows such as the classic series All Creatures Great and Small and Doctors.

Annie Timothy is a critically acclaimed artist. Her work has been shown extensively, with exhibitions at The Royal Academy and The Troubadour in London.

New seafront toilets unveiled to criticism f Robin Pearman with the detailed layout

Planning approval for them has been sought by Arun District Council. It describes the building as stylish and modern and designed to blend in with their surroundings.

The proposal also includes a new beach office to replace the current foreshore office, opposite Walton Avenue, which will be demolished to make way for the new buildings.

The council has set aside £200,000 to pay for the toilets but funding for the new office has yet to be found.

Cllr Gillian Brown, the council's leader, said: "We are fully committed to the improvement of Bognor Regis promenade. We know that both our visitors and residents enjoy spending time on the beach. We want them to have

a good time, which includes providing them with clean, modern, accessible toilets to encourage them to return."

But Cllr Jeanette Warr, a Bognor Regis Town Council member for Hotham ward, said: "I am dismayed by the lack of consultation by Arun about these plans.

"It would have been nice if they had spoken to the town council, and especially the ward members, before they had submitted the formal plans.

"I know they will be available for public comments as part of the planning process but I am surprised Arun did not want to talk to us beforehand."

She said she still believed the now closed underground toilets could have been refurbished and re-opened with staffing to provide a cheaper alternative to the proposed building.

The traditional toilets close to the

bandstand were closed last year because Arun said they flooded and attracted antisocial behaviour.

They were replaced by temporary toilets on the promenade in May. Cllr Mrs Brown said the Portaloos' arrival had been welcomed.

"Since the temporary toilets were installed earlier this year, we've had a lot of positive comments from beach visitors about what an improvement they are on the old ones.

"We anticipate an even more positive response to the new toilets once they are in place next year," she said.

The proposed toilets would be followed by further works to improve the seafront, she said. These would include a children's play area to complement Beach on the Beach and a new building for a food business to be marketed later in 2018.

DETAILED designs for new homes in North Bersted have been revealed.

Housebuilder Linden Homes put the layout and the appearance of the new estate west of New Barn Lane on display to residents on Tuesday.

Some 50 people saw the proposals in the first hour of the two-hour exhibition at Jubilee Parish Hall, close to the site.

New Barn Lane resident Alan Benson, who had criticised the original proposals, said the latest scheme had addressed some of his concerns.

"We have still got the access road coming out opposite us. It's not the noise of the traffic, it's the headlights which will be shining in our windows.

"It's a shame the development is happening but there is nothing we can do about that. Unfortunately, it means we are going to have more traffic.

Drainage is also going to be a major problem because that site has flooded.

"But the situation's not as bad as it could be. We have not got any buildings opposite us, so we have still got a bit of an outlook."

Mike Lambourne, of Winston Crescent, said: "It all looks very good but I am just worried if the government guidelines for these developments are valid.

"I know they set out how many spaces there should be for each property but I wonder if they are enough. You look at

some of these roads and the cars are just stuck. They are not going anywhere.

"I am also worried about more flooding. I wonder if the guidelines are good enough for drainage. They are all drawn up in a central office without any concern for a local area."

Outline planning approval for the housing was granted by Arun District Council in February, 2016, to establish the principle of developing the field.

Linden Homes bought the site last Friday. Its senior planning manager, Robin Pearmain, said: "This exhibition is showing the design of the layout and the design of the homes.

"Those are the only matters now to be decided by the council.

"People who have come here are happy Linden Homes is building the site and they are happy with the layout of the site. There is still some animosity over the site being given outline planning permission but that is no longer up for debate."

Linden Homes intended to seek detailed planning permission from Arun next month, he said.

A decision is expected this November.

Work is due to start on site next March for three years. * The future of a further 50 homes on an adjoining site are subject to a planning enquiry this September ordered by secretary of state Sajid Javid.

` Funshine is back FUNSHINE days return along Bognor Regis seafront this summer.

The town council-organised events will again provide plenty of free enjoyment for children for four weeks.

All the activities will take place from 11am-3pm at the bandstand and the nearby beach.

The events will begin on July 31 with TJ Board Hire and Sussex Wildlife Trust. The start of August will see TJ Board Hire and the Marine Conservation Society stage a beach clean and workshop.

The Wednesday is all about West Sussex Recycling before a beachcomb and eco awareness art workshop on the Thursday.

The week will end with a 'Let's Go Bananas for Bognor Day'.

Three more funshine weeks will follow with various themes.

` Yapton proposals GRANITE Gate has sought planning permission for 70 homes in Yapton.

The company wants to build the development at Stakers Farm on North End Road. The proposal will affect the character and appearance of the village's Main Road/Church Road conservation area and the setting of listed buildings.

A statement by Granite Gate says: "The master plan provides for a sustainable addition to the Yapton settlement that is designed around current best practice design guidance to create a safe, inclusive and interactive environment."

Arun District Council will consider the application.

Protests over pub proposal ANGRY residents have protested about an Aldwick pub’s kitchen equipment.

The neighbours said the odour control equipment and walk-in cold store at The Martlets had ruined their lives.

Pub operator Greene King was given planning permission for the installation

by Arun District Council.

Its development control committee members were told the company’s scheme was acceptable as long as it was run in line with strict conditions agreed with the council’s environmental health officers.

A total of 13 letters of objection were submitted to council about the proposals. One of the protestors, Jennifer Nevell, told the committee on Wednesday: “What was once an enjoyable quiet residential area with a pub and restaurant that matched our local community, has now been turned into an area blighted with intrusive odour and noise.

“It’s hard to fathom how the change of ownership of a pub can have such a dramatic effect.

“The equipment is higher, blacker and larger than the equipment removed by Greene King and it’s totally visible from all of our gardens.”

She said the current equipment led to a ‘vile and unpleasant odour’ which stopped the neighbouring residents being able to open their windows or enjoy their gardens.

The cold store also created a 24-hour droning noise, she said, to add to the 11

months of misery those who lived nearby had been forced to endure.

Her comments were backed by those from another neighbour. Aldwick Parish Council also objected. Its members told Arun they believed problems with sound and odour from the pub had not been sufficiently addressed.

Initial approval for the Aldwick Road site to be used for licensed premises dates back to February 1949. It appears a pub was first approved in November 1964.

The current application replaced one submitted by Greene King to Arun late in 2016 and withdrawn last March.

Arun planning officer Daniel Vick said at the committee meeting: “It should be noted that an abatement notice has been served on this site by the district council environmental health team.

“This planning application is an attempt by the applicant to comply with the abatement notice should permission be granted.

“Following revisions to the application which included further details of proposed noise and odour attenuation, the council’s environmental health team withdrew their objection subject to conditions."

The conditions included continual operation of the equipment in line with the controls set out in the pub’s odour management plan, a ban on using the extraction system from 11.15pm8am daily and records to be kept of its servicing, he added.

Councillors back women's fight against delayed retirement date WOMEN fighting for their state pensions signed up two Bognor Regis councillors to their campaign.

The WASPI members stopped at the town council's latest drop-in session when they realised it coincided with their latest publicity walk along the seafront.

They took the chance to talk to town councillors Pat Dillon and Jeanette Warr about their concerns.

Jill Robertson, the founder of the WASPI Bognor and Chichester South Coast group, said: "Cllr Dillon and Cllr Warr heard our stories and about the current government response in Parliament and pledged to help support the campaign."

WASPI stands for Women Against State

Pension Inequality and is battling for transitional payments for women who were born in the 1950s. They have twice had their state pension dates delayed by the government as it equalises the start of the payments until 66 for both sexes.

Some women have lost tens of thousands of pounds in pension because of the rapid raising of the age from 60.

"More than 63,000 women in West Sussex are affected," said Jill.

The matter hit the national headlines this month when a debate among MPs saw a government pensions minister, Guy Opperman, suggest the affected women should become apprentices.

Anger at BBQ damage THOUGHTLESS park users could cause plans for new sculptures in a Bognor Regis park to be scrapped.

The threat to the proposals follows damage caused to part of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party sculpture in the past few days.

Annoyed volunteers in the Hotham Park Heritage Trust have warned they are not prepared to commit further funds to add extra sculptures to the popular open space if any more damage occurs.

Rosemary Warren, chairman of the heritage trust, said: "We are very disappointed that sheer thoughtlessness has resulted in damage to one of the toadstool seats at the Mad Hatter's copse in Hotham Park.

"The feature, installed around three months ago, appears to have been the subject of someone lighting a barbecue tray which was placed on the stool. We are concerned that, as the feature cost a great deal of money, such vandalism - if repeated - could well affect the trust's decision on whether they invest further with the Alice in Wonderland

The town council's next drop-in surgery in its red gazebo will be in the precinct from 10am-12.30pm on August 19.

The sculpture consists of an 8ft X 2.5ft table, with clocks in each corner, playing cards along the centre and eight toadstool seats. The Mad Hatter is a separate figure.

It took Arundel sculptor Simon Groves 15 days to create with the help of Harrison Doughty.

Costing several thousand pounds, the oak and cedar work of art was funded from the profits of last year's country fair staged by the trust.

“I don’t believe it can become flats without altering the outside. I fear another application will come forward,” he said.

The three-storey hotel on The Esplanade opposite the pier was built in the 1830s and is in The Steyne and Waterloo Square Conservation Area.

Arun gave permission in April, 1988, for ten studio/one bed apartments to be created on its first floor.

Approval was given in November, 2015, for a further ten flats but this has yet to be put into effect. The latest application, by Arundel Electrical, would reduce the total number of flats by two if it is carried out.

Arun planning officer Daniel Vick said: “Given that the property has permission already for 20 flats we consider that 18 flats is, therefore, acceptable."

Committee vice-chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said: “I regret the fact this has been lost as a hotel.

Because of the previous planning permission, I don’t see how we are able to turn this down.”

Cllr Dougal Maconachie (C, Marine) said he and his wife had lived in the area for 32 years.

“It was quite a nice hotel to start with but it went down and down over the years," he said. "It has gone into a terrible state of disrepair. We look at the back of it from our patio and it is indescribable. The sooner it is brought up to a decent standard, and is turned into 18 flats, the better as far as we are concerned.”

Rox to bring music all year BUDDING West End performers will have the chance to tread the boards as part of this year's Rox Music and Arts festivities in Bognor Regis.

Alongside preparations for the usual Rox entertainments that are due to run throughout the year, the creative team are setting their sights on an exciting theatrical project.

This Sunday at 1pm sees open auditions take place at the University of Chichester's Bognor Regis campus for musical comedy I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.

With this production the team hope to recapture the success of their previous fringe theatre shows such as Spring Awakening in 2010.

Auditions are open to performers aged between 18-75 years old, both male and female, for a range of characters from the popular offBroadway show.

The musical presents a range of different couples through a series of vignettes that represent the time-line of a relationship. For this reason there are plenty of roles available and the team wish to see many talented actors at the auditions.

Organiser Robbie Cameron was looking forward to casting the show.

He said: "We hope to see lots of new and old faces at auditions.

"We are considering giving many of the parts different accents so we're looking for confident character actors.

"This is the first show we've done in about four years so it's very exciting."

The musical will open in October this

year at The Waverley pub on Marine Drive, with the intention of giving the show a fringe-theatre feel.

The auditions will precede the annual Rox Festival taking place next weekend on July 29-30.

As well as live music and DJ sets provided in various locations around the town, there will also be further acoustic music and family-orientated activities at the Secret Garden in Hotham Park taking place between 1pm-7pm.

Organisers are particularly excited to announce that former The Jam guitarist Steve Brookes, pictured above, will be closing the event at the Secret Garden on Sunday evening with a variety of music including his most recent album.

Confirmed venues for live music around Bognor Regis include The William Hardwicke, The Pier Hotel, The Hothampton Arms, The Claremont, The Lamb Steyne and the QE2.

What has got the Rox team really excited, however, is their latest project to ensure that live music remains a constant around Bognor Regis.

On every third Friday of the month, beginning this August 18, live music sessions will take place at The Waverley with free entry to the public.

Robbie explained why this was important.

He said: "At Rox we want to bring as much creativity to the town as possible."

NEW MEMBERS are being sought to join the volunteers who check conditions at Ford Open Prison.

Independent Monitoring Boards are an important part of prison life in England and Wales and contribute to the safe and decent operation of jails.

Members at Ford visit the prison weekly. They can go anywhere in the jail, unaccompanied by staff, and speak to any prisoner or prison employee.

Volunteers of any gender or ethnic background are invited to join them.

No special qualifications are needed but board members need to be nonjudgemental and to have an interest in people and in justice.

They will receive full training and will be expected to make 3-4 visits to the prison each month.

HMP Ford houses more than 500 men.

Their crimes range from murder to fraud.

All are in the last stage of their sentences.

They have been categorised as low-risk and suitable for open conditions.

About 100 of them go out into the community every weekday for work or education as part of the prison's resettlement programme.

"The IMB produces an annual report to the secretary of state for justice, reflecting on how well we think the prison is achieving its aims. The report is a public document," said Mr Archer.

Demand for barriers to stop travellers getting on to site BARRIERS are needed to stop travellers misusing a Bognor Regis site.

The physical structures should be installed at the London Road coach and car park to prevent its regular illegal occupation, according to one of the town’s councillors.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said the travellers had arrived twice a year for several years.

“Over the last few years there have been several incursions by travellers on to the London Road coach park and car park. Such incursions are serious wherever they occur." he said.

"However, due to the car park being

located next to a school, a public park and a high concentration of residential properties, it has been become a very serious issue for the community."

Arun’s cabinet member for neighbourhood services, Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, said the 24 hour parking at the site provided an income for the council.

“If barriers were put in place, then coaches and lorries would be prevented from entering the coach and lorry park. Resources would be required to open and shut the barriers on demand 24/7 which would make this facility unviable,” he said.

Musical talent is applauded

` Spadework by students is winner KEEN gardeners at Felpham Community College have won a national award.

The hard-working Year 8 students were selected by the Royal Horticultural Society for its Contribution to School Gardening School Gardening Team of the Year 2017 award for the garden they have created during this academic year.

They completed the grassroots work in the college's Felpham Way grounds in and out of school hours.

Dan Woods, the college's curriculum leader in design and technology, said: "It is great to get recognition from the RHS for all the hard work the boys completed.

"They wanted to make a relaxing and chilled area for students to visit.

"The boys were really resourceful and used old tyres and pallets as part of the design."

The students included Fergus Staniforth, Jon White, Will Smith and Charlie Askew, pictured below.

Charlie said: "We wanted to take part in this project to make a difference and make the school look nicer."

Ryan added: "We are really pleased with how the garden looks now it is finished."

Pupils challenged to think of skills

STUDENTS were asked to look into the future to make best use of their skills.

The Year 7 Felpham Community College pupils took part in a progression and careers workshop run by the University of Chichester.

They were asked which career they might want to do in the future and what skills and GCSE subjects they thought would be useful to make those careers possible.

These details were used to ask the 11 to 12-year-olds to think about how those skills could be used if they had to change their plans.

Gill Woodman, the college's careers co-ordinator, said the workshop was

an established part of the academic calendar.

"It is a great opportunity for students to think about themselves, the skills they have and how those skills relate to future careers," she said.

"Knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are, and what transferable skills you have, is possibly more important that knowing what job you might want to do in the future.

"Technology is changing so quickly that many students in Year 7 will end up in jobs that don't yet exist."

The students also had the change to ask one of the university's ambassadors about life in higher education.

FLUTE duets and clarinet quartets were among the skilled performances at Felpham Community College's latest summer concert.

The showcase revealed the wide range of students' musical talents before a packed audience of staff, parents and fellow students.

Individual and group performances also included a wind ensemble, pianists, saxophonists, guitarists and a number of singers.

College curriculum leader in music Nicole Matthews said: "I have never been so proud of the range of students and abilities showcased from students in Year 7 right through to Year 13.

"They all took such pride in their performances and their enthusiasm and effort was phenomenal.

"The evening was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Thank you to all the students who performed."

Vehicles line up to provide journey through the decades for visitors CAR FANS enjoyed the latest special day of classic and vintage vehicles in Bognor Regis.

The Drive Through Time motor gala at West Park attracted hundreds of enthusiasts from the surrounding areas.

The sixth of the events by Bognor Regis Town Council offered the opportunity to club exhibitors and individuals to showcase their most prized possessions on four wheels.

Anna and Sebastian Skerka, from Bersted, took their six-year-old and eight-month-old children to the event.

Anna said: “We’ve lived in Bognor for three years but this is our first time we’ve been here.

"We have been here since 11 this morning, and are enjoying our day.”

Sebastian said: “I think I might bring my 26-year-old Mercedes next year, although my wife jokes that the car is my younger model!”

There was plenty to do for all ages, including an art exhibition, craft and charity fair, a kidzone which consisted of a foam pit, bouncy castle, bubble performer and face painting, a main stage with live music, food stalls and, of course, classic vehicles and club stands.

Businesses also had stands at Sunday's event. They included Petworth-based company A Chip off the Block, which makes bespoke woodcraft products.

Owner Stephen Elliot said: “We came to the event last year as well as coming to the Bognor Carnival, Birdman and many others. There’s a lot of footfall here which

is great for our stand and it’s lovely to see the support for local businesses.”

Visitors could enjoy live music on the stage from Bare Knuckle Parade in the morning followed by a set from The Consultancy. In between, the British F1 Grand Prix was shown live from Silverstone on a huge screen to ensure petrol heads could watch Lewis Hamilton’s latest victory.

Storrington-based club SADCASE (Storrington and District Classic and Sports Car Enthusiasts) was present at the event for its fourth year running.

Club member Jamie Brown said: “It’s a great place to come. Any excuse to show our vehicles and we’re there.

"We really enjoy watching people looking at the cars and the enjoyment the whole day brings. Our club is unique as we allow owners with any car to become a member.”

The club’s cars on the day ranged from a 1969 Triumph GT6 to a 2009 Aston Martin DB9, although the classics proved to be the more popular.

“We have a really old truck over there which is from the 1920s and is so different, people just love it. If I could own any car in the world it would have to be an F1 Mercedes McLaren, though” said Jamie.

A hugely popular car being showcased among the crowds was a DeLorean resembling the one used in the hugely popular Back to The Future films. Also pulling in the crowds were vintage police vehicles, Nissan Figaros in a rainbow of

colours, an American Ford F100 and an old army vehicle.

David and Carol Vivash, from Yapton, visit every year. Carol said: “We’ve been for all six years and really enjoy it. We’re so pleased the weather is nice this year as last year was a wash out.

"It’s not just because it’s free, but it’s all about support for local businesses and the town and it’s just a great day.”

David showcases his vehicles with the Sussex British Motorcycle Owners Club.

Bognor Regis Pierwatch chairman Jan Malpas said the event had helped the group. "We had a fabulous day. So many people attended and we signed up many new members. Protecting the pier is of great interest to everyone in the Bognor Regis area."

by Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall and newly-appointed town crier Jane Smith on her first public appearance.

“It’s a really enjoyable day, just brilliant. The community atmosphere has been truly amazing and it’s great to see all the people having a lovely time," she said.

` Homeless help agreed by council UP TO £1m will be spent by Arun District Council to buy a property to help those without a home.

Council members unanimously agreed to back a decision by their cabinet for the purchase of one or more suitable buildings to take place.

It is anticipated some eight units of temporary accommodation will be provided by the move. This will help to cut Arun's dependency on using B&B rooms at a cost of some £500,000 a year.

Council leader Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick E) said: "This will help us to provide temporary accommodation at a lower cost and will also provide the council with an investment opportunity."

` Golf plan backed AN ADVENTURE golf course for a Bognor Regis park has been backed.

ISS Landscape has received planning approval from Arun District Council to create the 18-hole attraction over the existing unusued putting green in the north of the park.

Council planning officer Richard Temple says in his report: "The new facilities are modest in scale and appearance, appropriate to the historic context of Hotham Park.

"The proposal as a whole causes no harm to the significance of the Upper Bognor Road and Mead Lane conservation area."

A new kiosk and 15 extra car parking spaces will also be created.

It is hoped the new course will open this autumn.

Charity's urgent office hunt A TRANSPORT lifeline run by a newly enlarged Bognor Regis charity for thousands of people could soon be homeless.

Sammy Community Transport faces parking its vehicles on the streets if its increasingly frantic search for a new base is fruitless.

The service has recently almost doubled in size by merging with Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport and taking on its services based around Littlehampton.

General manager Mike Collins said it faced the prospect of being without any parking spaces for its expanded fleet of minibuses and adapted vehicles.

“We are getting desperate for a new property. Time is running out. We have got until November to find somewhere with parking and for 12 staff,” he told Sammy's annual meeting last Friday.

“The ACCT base in Ford is there to fall back on but it's not really viable because there is barely room for the vehicles already there, let alone 25 in all.

“I would be keen to hear from anyone who can help us because, otherwise, we will be parking up on the streets.”

Sammy has been based in Chichester Road, North Bersted, for five years after leaving its rooms of many years in York Road in the town centre.

The charity was formed in 1973 when a Bognor Regis businessman, Samuel Jay, left money to buy a minibus to help those who were unable to use public transport.

In 2012, it absorbed Chichester Community Transport and the Dial-ARide service to widen its area of operation.

It runs nine minibuses and two wheelchair accessible cars with some 30 volunteers and eight paid drivers. A further 30 voluntary drivers use their vehicles.

The merger with ACCT last month

brought an additional 40 volunteers, nine minibuses and three adapted cars.

The combined operations have created the second biggest transport service of its kind in West Sussex, behind Crawley, and ensures residents living from Emsworth to East Preston and up to Arundel can be helped to reach medical appointments, social groups and enjoy outings for a small charge.

Talks about the joining together took nine months. The successful outcome will send the number of Sammy's members soaring. There were 7,235 last month and they travelled 102,152 miles.

But the chairman, Roger Turner, warned finances remained tight as the charity always missed out on individual donations.

“Sammy is Bognor Regis' best kept secret, although our buses are regularly seen around the town. I have been the chairman for more than ten years and we have not had a legacy left to us in that time.

“I don't know why that is but we have got to try to break down that barrier. We are a very local based charity and we serve members of the community over local periods. But the legacies don't seem to happen," he said.

“We are never going to have the popular appeal of the two hospices, or the hospitals, or the animal charities, but we do offer this service to those unable, or less able, to drive.”

Peter Stemp, Sammy's treasurer, said its income was £200,377 in the year to the end of last March, against spending of £240,137 meaning its reserves were cut to £90,685.

Plans had been made to cope with the fact the last instalment of a national lottery grant – which paid more than £58,000 - in the year would be received this November, he added.

THis exhibition on the Polish and Czech pilots in Sussex during the Second World War is to run from July 22 until the September 3 from 11am4pm each day (except on August 6 for the museum’s Family Day).

It will include explanation boards, a film on Polish and Czech airmen in Britain during the war and a new painting on Czech pilot Karel Kuttelwascher shooting down a German bomber on a night intruder mission.

THe museum hopes the exhibition will enlighten many as to the involvement of these nations in the Battle of Britain.

In March 1939 Czechoslovak Air Force pilots were ordered to lay down their arms when the Germans invaded their country. Many wished to continue the fight and escaped to Poland.

When this country was overrun seven months later, the Czech pilots made their way with Polish Air Force pilots to France where they served under the French flag during the Battle of France.

Following the capitulation of France in June 1940 many escaped to England.

THe Poles called Britain ‘the Island of Last Hope’.

On reaching England, the Polish and Czech fighter pilots, after language training (many could speak French but had no English) and conversion training to British aircraft were posted to RAF units and to newly formed Polish and Czech squadrons.

During the Battle of Britain the most

successful RAF squadron was the newly formed No 303 Polish Squadron which in six weeks claimed 126 enemy aircraft destroyed.

THe fighter pilot with most victories during the battle was Josef Frantisek, a Czech flying in a Polish Squadron.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh C T Dowding, Air Officer Commanding RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, later wrote of the Polish and Czech pilots: “I must confess that I had been a little doubtful of the effect which their experience in their own countries and in France might have had upon the Polish and Czech pilots, but my doubts were soon laid to rest because all three squadrons swung into the fight with a dash and enthusiasm which is beyond praise.

“THey were inspired by a burning hatred for the Germans which made them very deadly opponents”.

Later in the war, the highest scoring night intruder pilot was Karel Kuttlewascher, a Czech flying in the RAF’s No 1 Squadron, who shot down 15 enemy aircraft whilst flying in a Hurricane fighter from RAF Tangmere over enemy occupied territory at night in 1942.

On July 22 the exhibition will be opened by Alexandra Kent, the daughter of Group Captain ‘Johnnie’ Kent, a flight commander with 303 Squadron during the Battle of Britain who later in THe war commanded a Polish Wing.

After the war he became the Station Commander of RAF Tangmere.

The willingness of the pupils at Felpham Community College to volunteer their answers to questions surprised the four South East Asian visitors.

Mr Kim Woon Kyoung, 42, said: “I teach at a secondary school in Seoul and I’ve been a teacher for 17 years. I wanted to learn new teaching methods and to discuss teaching.

“One of the biggest differences between teaching in my country and here is the fact the students here raise their hands when they want to speak during a class.

“Most Korean students are too scared to raise their hands. But the students here are eager to join the discussions.”

His colleague, Ms Kim Eun Jung, 32, said: “I thought British education would be a lot more conservative than it is. Education in Korea is more affected by the American system. I really like the attitude that the students here can ask questions if they want.”

The other Koreans who spent seven days at the college were Mr Ryu Myunggil and Mr Kim Jong Yool.

Their time there was arranged through the University of Chichester. The visitors observed and took part in lessons and talked to students about education in their

home country.

They were also interested in the college’s commitment to the UN Rights Respecting School initiative and the work of the college’s student council.

They are among 46 teachers from Korea on the visit - 21 are secondary school teachers and the others teach in primary schools. They return to Seoul on July 28.

Paul Darbyshire, the college’s curriculum leader for business and vocational studies, said: “The college has not been involved in a programme like this for many years.

“It’s been very interesting. As well as talking about education, they have been telling us all about Korean culture, food and television. They have given us a real insight into life in Korea and our students have found it fascinating.”

Year 8 student Amber Hearn, 13, was one of the Felpham students who spoke to the visitors about Felpham's role as a Rights Respecting School.

“It’s been very interesting. We have learned a lot about South Korea and how their schools are run and how they are different from ours,” she said. “They have much longer school days. Some students stay until 11pm because their parents want them to get into the better colleges.

“Primary and middle schools are free but the parents have to pay £400 a term for each child in secondary school.”

A RARE defeat for the Conservatives has seen a residents' battle about the future of a Walberton field backed.

Rebel Tory members of Arun District Council joined opposition councillors to reject a call by the majority group to refer the prospect of the development of Tuppers Field back to a sub-committee.

The 25-19 vote, with seven abstentions, means the decision of the council's overview select committee last month to accept the principles of an independent inspector to designate the field as a local green space was accepted.

Councillors also decided by a slightly larger margin the field should no longer be considered as suitable for development and should be regarded as a potential local green space when Walberton's neighbourhood plan was reviewed.

Cllr Paul English (C, Felpham E) told last week's full council meeting: "What is being proposed is very basic, very simple and it just makes total sense."

The full council also agreed a review of how petitions presented by residents were handled should go ahead.

Of concern to councillors was the fact Arun's rules prevent petition organisers being able to speak to councillors or be questioned. * PLANNING approval is being sought by Wates Developments for up to 175 homes on Tupper's Field in Walberton.

The developer has asked Arun District Council to back its plans for the land east of Tye Lane.

Felpham festival of the arts a success CREATIVE students from Felpham had their talents celebrated at a special evening.

Felpham Community College's annual Summer Arts' Evening proved as popular as ever with large numbers of pupils and their friends and families attending.

On display in the main hall was an array of paintings, photographs and sculptures created by art students from across all years.

To accompany the work on display were various musical and dance performances by talented students including singing, piano playing, an abridged version of Little Shop of Horrors and even flamenco dancing.

This celebration of the arts continued throughout the rest of the school with design and textile

projects displayed in the sixth form common room, further musical sets in the courtyard and a variety of students' films played on a big screen in the media department.

For assistant head teacher Michelle Kelly, the evening has always been an important event.

She said: "Celebrating creativity and the arts in today's society is becoming more difficult.

"We're a rights respecting college and are all about the children having the right to express themselves. Having this artistic outlet is really good, especially just after exam time.

"It's always a relaxed evening, it's one of the nicest events of the year."

Flamenco dancer Jessica BulpetteCaynes, aged 14, enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the event.

She said: "I've performed seven other times at the school.

"I love this evening, though.

It's nice here and there isn't a big crowd which is good."

The media studies department also had plenty of work to show.

Teacher Dale Manning spoke of the course's popularity. He said: "We're always fully subscribed in media studies.

"It's nice to see the students having the chance to explore different forms of art."

Family members of the students involved were impressed with the variety of work on display.

Andrea Brown, from Aldwick, had attended the event several times in support of relative Caitlin Brown, who was performing. She said: "This is the third year I've come to this event and I've enjoyed it every time.

"The event has been really well planned. Tomorrow they've got a sports day which balances out really nicely with the creative side.

For members of the school's production of Little Shop of Horrors the evening provided an opportunity to have fun with the show as cast members swapped roles to try something different.

Charlotte Walters, 17, was among the cast members who enjoyed the occasion. She said: "It's exciting to be able to give it another go.

"This atmosphere is different, though.

It's a bit more relaxed."

Mural colours the seafront EYE-CATCHING murals have given a row of hoardings on Bognor Regis seafront the wow factor.

The 32.5m long series of panels was transformed into a colourful and vivid series of illustrations to delight all those who walked, cycled or drove past this week.

The finishing touches to the artwork were applied by seven young people, mainly GCSE students from The Regis School, supervised by professional artist Sarah Gillings.

One of those adding his handiwork to the final design was Oren Somers-Baines, 16.

He said: "This is my second day here. I've never used spray paint before.

"I thought this would be a nice thing to do in memory of the fish and chip shop which used to be here."

Joining him was fellow 16-year-old Morgan Stephens. She said: "This mural is lovely. It draws your eyes to it. I'm proud of what I have done."

The latest mural on Waterloo Square's eastern side is the second to feature the It's Our Future slogan after the first was damaged in a major blaze which ripped through the adjoining fish and chip shop soon after the painting was completed last October.

Bognor Regis Town Council joined with the site's owners and supportive businesses to enable the new mural to go ahead.

Sarah said: "This is bright and vibrant and it will make people want to look at it.

"The young people have been really good.

They are using different techniques and more complex artwork."

` Parking ban in place for new school work GREEN Flags have been awarded to two parks enjoyed by Bognor Regis area residents.

The prestigious awards show Hotham Park and Marine Park Gardens are among the world's best open spaces.

The international award is a sign to the public the popular sites boast the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. It is the eighth year running Hotham Park can fly the flag.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors alike, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Hotham Park to such a high standard."

He thanked Hotham Park Heritage Trust, the conservation volunteers and the miniature railway and cafe owners for their efforts as well.

Marine Park Gardens has won the award for the seventh successive years.

"As we celebrate this award, we look forward to all that the year ahead has to offer, as we focus on our eighth award," said Cllr Wotherspoon.

He praised the gardens' Friends for their help and also paid tribute to the council's contractor, ISS, for its work.

German guests given lessons at town school f Some of the cars at last year's fete

Cars will be draw for village's fête ALL ROADS will lead to Middleton this weekend as an impressive array of time-travelling machines forms part of the area's annual fête.

More than 70 veteran, vintage and classic vehicles are due to be displayed for the delight of enthusiasts and families.

Visitors to Sunday's event will be able to see what travelling was like at the start of the First World War, through the 1920s and 30s to the early 2000s.

Another well-established highlight of the Middleton event is the dog show. Its popularity means it will start straight after the fête opens at 12.30pm on Shrubbs Field in Elmer Road.

Competitive tails will continue to wag well into the afternoon before they give way to other arena activities.

While these attractions are going on, the rest of the fête will be in full swing with a wide selection of stalls, raffles, tombolas, bouncy castles and typical entertainments for a large village event.

Car-booters will be well represented and craft stalls will fill the adjoining village hall. To keep everyone refreshed, the Scouts' hall will become a tearoom.

This year's good cause for the fête is the Chestnut Tree Children's Hospice and its specialist care for children in Sussex and south-east Hampshire with life-limiting conditions.

GERMAN students got a taste of life at a Bognor Regis school.

One of the highlights for the party of visitors from one of the town's German twins was a traditional and tasty English cream tea.

The young people from the Kant Gymnasium in Weil am Rhein and two of their teachers spent a morning at the school, pictured below by sixth former

Jess Fitzpatrick.

They were hosted by students from Years 9 and 10 and attended a range of lessons. Sebastian Power, a Year 9 student, was positive about the whole experience. He said: "It was interesting to meet other people from another country and try out my German."

The visit was arranged by Bognor Regis Twinning Association.

Its secretary, Bob Bonner, said: "The visitors thoroughly enjoyed their time at The Regis School and learnt a lot about life in an English school."

Previous visits to the school have taken place through the association.

The school is part of the United Learning group of schools which provides education to more than 30,000 children across the UK.

THIS year the 26th Chichester International Film Festival will take place between August 10-27.

The Chichester Film Festival is the largest on the South Coast and will feature around 170 films during its 20 day run including previews, premieres and new releases from around the world.

See documentaries, jazz films and silent films at St. John’s Chapel and join two open air screenings Cars 3 (August 4) and Dirty Dancing (August 5) Priory Park.

August 10 will see an exciting film première or preview screened at the park, which will be preceded by a gala dinner at

There will also be the an awards ceremony taking place, which will include recognition for Best Film, Audience Award and others.

Other events not to be missed include talks, Q&A sessions, visits by directors, producers and actors.

The aim of the festival is to offer a quality selection of worldwide independent, innovative cinema and visual arts which attracts over 6,500 festival goers from all over the South Coast and further afield.

Set sail for The Navigator Bar and Restaurant in Bognor Regis Fresh, delicious food with a beautiful view, writes Fiona Callingham IT WAS anchors away for myself and a friend this week as we journeyed to the Navigator Hotel situated along the Bognor Regis seafront one lunchtime.

Having walked past the establishment countless times I found myself questioning why I had never ventured inside before as once we passed the threshold we were instantly impressed by the nautical-chic surroundings and welcoming atmosphere.

The bar area encompassed everything you would want from a traditional pub setting: a gorgeous beamed ceiling, homely yet comfortable seating and a wide array of tempting beers, ciders, wines and spirits behind the bar.

Steering away from the alcoholic beverages, however, we were led to the restaurant area otherwise known as The Chart Room. With its wide windows overlooking the sea we could have been sat on the deck of a (very still) cruise liner! We were especially delighted by the seaworthy maps that decorated the ceiling just above us.

To add to our perceived holiday location

we opted, decadently, for a Sauvignon Blanc from the wine list. From Marlborough in New Zealand this light wine was fresh and crisp on the tongue and exuded gooseberry and tropical flavours - without overpowering, however. My friend commented that it complemented his fish meal perfectly, and, at £18.95, was well worth the money to accompany our meal.

Choosing our food, however, proved more difficult than the wine. With so much choice it took us several minutes to mull over the menus - not that we were in a hurry with such a beautiful view right in front of us.

Alongside the main menu was the option of items on the bar menu and the specials boards on the walls which are updated according to what meat and fish The Navigator gets freshly delivered. Similarly, the regular menu boasts meals that are all made up of the freshest ingredients and our friendly waitress, Rachel, explained how all the meat used at the Navigator comes from local butchers, Jordan’s in Rose Green. The rest of the produce, too, is sourced locally and this was apparent in our mouth-watering meals lovingly prepared by

head chef Karen Birch.

My friend ordered the breaded brie with cranberry sauce and salad to start, and I the homemade soup de jour - delicious tomato.

The brie was creamy and rich, which was nicely balanced by the freshness of the cranberries and salad. It had been cooked to perfection, the breadcrumbs adding a satisfying crunch to each bite. For £5.25, the brie certainly did not disappoint.

My tomato soup was a gorgeous deep red and offered everything I would want from such a dish. It was warming and retained all the sweetness and fresh flavour of the tomatoes. At £4.95, it could make a great value lunch or, in my case, an excellent opening to a larger meal.

This only added to our excitement for the arrival of our main courses. In keeping with the nautical theme of the restaurant, my friend found it hard to resist the selection of fish from the specials board. After much deliberation he selected the whole seabass with chilli and lime butter. All this came with an option of various potatoes and vegetables, both of which were generously portioned.

The seabass really was a whole, barely fitting on the plate to the delight of my friend. It fell away from the bone easily and the chilli and lime butter added an unexpected but welcomed kick to the flavours. He was also highly impressed by the new potatoes and medley of seasonal vegetables of which there was plenty to spare. Priced at £14.95, the seabass may have been one of the more expensive items on the menu but it was

certainly worth it.

Continuing on the theme of large portions I was treated to a mixed cheese and beetroot salad from the bar menu. With wedges of stilton, brie and cheddar on my plate I was in cheese-lover’s heaven and delightedly started devouring the cheeses accompanied by the crisp fresh salad. Again, this plate was full to the brim and for £8.95 was exceptionally good value.

We were also spoiled for choice when it came to dessert. I opted for the lemon meringue pie priced the same as the other sweets at £4.95.

It was everything I had hoped for with its zesty filling and crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside meringue topping. My friend’s toffee lumpy bumpy, too, did not disappoint with its airy toffee sponge topped with creamy cheesecake and toffee mousse. After these enormous meals there’s no denying that we felt like a couple of land-blubbers!

There truly is something for everyone to enjoy at The Navigator. With extensive menus for meat and fish lovers as well as vegetarians no one need go hungry. Already great value, there are further bargains when taking into account their fabulous two for one offer on main courses during the week - between the hours of 2.30pm-5pm on Monday-Saturday.

Venture into the new world with wines at M&S Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

A CURSORY visit to M&S in Chichester might be attributed to a sixth sense that a 25 per cent reduction on six bottles or more was in the offing.

It was therefore incumbent upon me to avail myself of this enticing offer and I duly selected a 2015 Red Claw Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay at an offer price, if one of six or more, of £10.13.

This wine from the Yabba Lake in Victoria, Australia is bottled after having spent ten months on yeast lees and aged in 40 per cent new oak French barrels. It is decidedly fresh, fruity and clean on the palate with citrus and stone-fruit to the fore and the subtlest of oak spice adding welcome complexity. This delightful white wine has a hint of vanillin oak on the nose, a touch of praline and grapefruit with white peach flavours, is crisp with a fine texture to boot and culminates in a very long pleasing finish - a veritable panoply of flavour in the glass and one I unreservedly commend to you.

Another white wine of note was the Mâcon-Villages Chardonnay, which

for an offer price of £7.50, is of a rich straw colour indicating a grape from mature wines and exudes nutty and peach flavours and, being unoaked, is refreshingly clean on the palate and a wine that should offend no guest.

If you are tempted by a rosé on these warm summer nights (take note, Danny and Sandy) then the 2016 Rosé d'Anjou for circa £6.38 could be your salvation, given its strawberry and cream postWimbledon flavours and hints of redcurrant and rosehip and is seriously worth your consideration.

I next turn my attention to three Malbecs of different provenance. The purple black Malbec originates from the Cahors region in South Western France, the location of my initiation to Malbec.

This grape variety being highly sensitive to frost and disease, the transportation thereof to Argentina has added to its global reputation and quality with other new world countries including Chile and New Zealand developing the same grape variety.

If you buy a burly, 'costaud' in French parlance, big red of Cahors and allow it to soften over a few years you will have a perfect accompaniment to roast lamb.

I begin my comparison of three Malbecs with the 2016 Las Dalias Mendoza Malbec being of excellent vintage and fruity with hints of liquorice and absolutely oozing bramble fruit and at an offer price of just £5.25 is well worth a punt.

My second Malbec hails from South Africa in the form of the 2016 Weather

Station Malbec with the grape first being planted in the twenties.

This wine, at a crazy offer price of £4.50 if you purchase two bottles thereof as part of six, is dry, smooth and sporting a good nose and is a real find and one to stock up upon at this price.

My final Malbec is from the renowned Rapel Valley in Chile whose hot, dry

The wine sports a powerful nose with a

1. In a large bowl combine chicken, breadcrumbs, eggs, onion, garlic and parsley. Sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper.

2. Form into meatballs.

I made about 2 dozen meatballs.

3. Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with foil. Spray with a bit of cooking spray.

4. Brown meatballs under the broiler (I use the high

setting) until browned.

About 6 minutes on each side. Flip half way through.

5. Place meatballs in the slow cooker and add in the BBQ sauce, brown sugar and soy sauce.

6. Cook on low for 2 hours.

Serve warm with chopped parsley and crushed red pepper flakes, if desired!

INGREDIENTS • 3 large pears, peeled and thinly sliced • ½ cup dried cranberries • ¼ cup plus 1 teaspoon granulated sugar • 2 teaspoons freshly grated orange zest • 1 tablespoon orange juice • 1 cup breadcrumbs

Pear and cranberry strudel

Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. 2. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.

3. Combine pears, dried cranberries, ¼ cup sugar, orange zest and orange juice in a medium bowl.

4. Unroll filo pastry on to a clean, dry surface. Cover with a sheet of wax paper and then a damp kitchen towel. Place a dry kitchen towel with a long edge toward you on the work surface. Sprinkle the towel lightly with breadcrumbs.

5. Lay 1 sheet of filo on the towel.

Starting at the centre and working toward the edges, lightly brush the filo sheet with oil. Sprinkle lightly with breadcrumbs.

6. Lay another sheet of filo on top; brush with oil and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Repeat with 5 of the remaining sheets of filo; lay the last sheet on top and brush with oil.

7. Mound the pear filling in a long 3-inch-wide strip on the filo stack, leaving a 2-inch border at the bottom and sides.

8. Fold the short edges in and, starting at the long edge nearest you, roll the filling and filo into a cylinder, using the towel to help lift as you roll. Roll up firmly but not too tightly, to allow a little room for expansion.

9. Brush the strudel with oil and sprinkle with the remaining 1 teaspoon sugar. Carefully transfer the strudel to the prepared baking sheet, placing it seam-side down. Poke several steam vents in the top using the tip of a sharp knife.

10. Bake the strudel until golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Just before serving, dust with icing sugar.

Summer celebrations are in full swing at Abbey Dean’s delicious Strawberry Fair RESIDENTS of the Abbey Dean Care Home in Barnham are looking forward to a day filled with music, activities and of course, strawberries.

THe Strawberry Fair sees the home, which is both residential and for dementia patients, open its gates this afternoon to family members of residents and staff to get involved with a fun day for all.

As well as live music to sing along to and raffles to enter the residents will be treated to mouth-watering cream teas provided by the caring staff of Abbey Dean.

THe garden event opens at 3pm and finishes at 5pm. All money raised on the day will be going into the residents’ fund and donations for the raffle will be greatly appreciated.

Streeter, this event is part of what makes Abbey Dean such a special place. She said: “We try to keep it as homely and fun as possible here. Although we are a residential home the focus is on providing a family atmosphere and a community feel.

“THat’s why days like this are so important.”

Last week children from Barnham Primary School paid the residents a visit at the home’s anticipated open day.

As usual the day was a hit as residents enjoyed the music provided by their talented choir. Both the children and residents are looking forward to meeting again in December for a similar event.

Community News & Views VIEWS are being sought from residents in the Post area about the future of West Sussex County Council's adult social care services.

The council is considering a new approach where people, their families and carers can meet with council staff in local settings to discuss their social care needs.

The council wants to: • Talk to more people at an earlier stage and support them to stay as independent as possible • Hold informal drop-in sessions in local communities, where people can talk to the county council about social care • Help to connect people to services and activities in their local communities The proposals take account of what people have told the council about their experiences of using adult social care.

The new approach has been trialled in some areas of the county since January this year.

A survey is running until August 11 for people to make their views known: haveyoursay.westsussex.gov.uk/legal-democraticservices/supporting-lives-connecting-people The survey asks for people’s views on the proposals and asks what would be important to them if the council took this approach.

Cllr Louise Goldsmith, the council's leader and cabinet member for adults, said: “We really hope to hear from as many people as possible who use our services, their families and carers, voluntary and community organisations, and all local people who have an interest in adult social care. We will then consider all the views before we decide on the way forward.”

A decision will be taken in the autumn by Cllr Mrs Goldsmith to decide how the adult social care services will be provided in the years to come.

ACID attacks will be one of the main topics raised by Sussex police and crime commissioner when she challenges the county's top police officer today.

Katy Bourne will question Chief Constable Giles York about the key challenges facing the force to tackle assaults using corrosive substances.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mrs Bourne said: "There have been 23 assaults involving corrosive substances in Sussex in the past three-and-a-half years, though there has not been any increase year-on-year.

"However, it was recently reported that the number of assaults involving corrosive substances in England and Wales has risen by 30 per cent in two years, with men accounting for two-thirds of these victims.

"I am concerned that the true extent of acid attacks may be hidden because victims are afraid of reprisals.

"I want to know what Sussex Police is doing to encourage more victims to come forward.

"I would also like to find out whether more can be done to restrict the availability of these substances and how the force is targeting retailers that sell these products to remind them of their responsibilities."

Other topics which will be under discussion will include the response to a joint report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and the HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate into harassment and stalking.

Mrs Bourne will also be seeking an update since March's meeting on plans to better educate police officers and staff to understand and recognise harassment and stalking and accurately record instances reported to them.

She will want to know as well how extra funds from the policing precept paid by households have been used to strengthen public protection investigators and expert youth teams.

HERITAGE experts have given their backing to a cafe in Bognor Regis.

The Hotham Park Cafe has been recognised in the latest Sussex Heritage Awards.

The judges awarded the contemporary structure, above, their Highly Commended status in the awards' commercial category.

These are intended to recognise and reward the highest-quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly-built projects, while encouraging the use of traditional skills or crafts.

The awards are organised by the Sussex Heritage Trust and its slogan 'design for the future, respect for the past' matches the design brief for the cafe drawn up by park owner Arun District Council.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, who collected the award on behalf of the council, said: "This is a fitting tribute to everyone involved in the cafe project.

"As the judges noted, the cafe sits beautifully in the parkland setting and provides

Now in the 19th year of the awards, the judges' comments included: 'The cafe has become an important component of the regeneration of the park' and 'contemporary but attractive, fitting well into its surroundings and complementary to the environment of Hotham Park.

The cafe was opened two years ago by Tom Barnes. He fitted it out, furnished and decorated it before he opened the doors to the public.

He serves freshly prepared, locally sourced food and drinks daytimes and evenings.

"In addition, we were able to reach out through a number of Neighbourhood Watch groups to a number of communities in the area."

The visit to the store followed one to Tesco in Shripney Road. They form part of a month-long campaign to stop residents being conned out of potentially thousands of pounds. Different age groups are being urged to remain vigilant against unexpected messages.

BRAZIL was linked to Bognor Regis to help residents who are partially sighted.

A volunteer in the South American country was the first to answer a call from a meeting at the 4Sight charity.

The latest Macular Society session at the Victoria Drive premises featured an astounding demonstration by RNIB assistive technology co-ordinator Davinder Kullar.

He opened the Be My Eyes app on his iPhone. This was developed last year and links a smartphone's camera with a network of helpers around the globe so they can describe the scene to a visually impaired person.

The Brazilian man who responded to Davinder's request easily relayed the items on the tables in the meeting room.

Davinder said: "This is a very easy app to use. It is free to download and the calls are free. It is great if you want a bit of help. The volunteers are people who are happy to spend five or ten minutes helping those with restricted vision when they have some spare time."

Among the handful of 4Sight members at the session was Middleton man Ken Jenkins, below with Davinder.

Ken, 85, of Buckingham Gate, said: "This is my first time here and I wasn't sure what I was going to find.

"But I'm surprised, surprised, surprised with the technology which is out there to help us.

"It's good to know you can still be independent as long as you understand what you have got to do.

"The technology is quite remarkable. We are very fortunate to live in this day and age with all these devices."

The session last Thursday was the fifth in the tie-up between 4Sight and the Macular Society.

4Sight outreach worker Dan Batchelor said: "There is a big demand for information about technology to help our members.

"We have four or five monthly technology groups around West Sussex. Knowing how to use the technology allows people with poor eyesight to keep in touch with their families and to find out what is going on around the world."

Stella Black, the Macular Society's London and south east regional manager, also attended the session to talk about the charity's work with those who have lost their central vision, usually through macular degeneration.

The group's next meeting will be from 10.30am-12.30pm on October 12 at 4Sight. It will feature the Calibre audio library.

SPILLING the beans was the main message from Alan Sargent’s fascinating and illuminating talk on Behind the Scenes at Chelsea to Donnington Gardening Club.

Alan told many tales of life at Chelsea as a contractor building the designers’ very diverse gardens. A Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture and Founder of the Association of Professional Landscapers, his career spans more than four decades. Starting in 1968, he steadily built a landscape business, until, in 1982, he won a British Association of Landscape Industries Award for the best domestic garden scheme.

He continued winning many awards, including more than 60 Royal Horticultural Society medals at Chelsea, Hampton Court, Tatten Park and Gardeners World Live, initially as project manager and constructor, and increasingly as designer, as well as builder. Alan became head gardener at Goodwood Estate between 2001 and 2007, achieving a lifelong ambition to be part of an historic garden, by restoring the private gardens.

It came as a great surprise to members that winners in all categories at Chelsea have to pay for the gold, silver-gilt, silver and bronze medals, and also the contractors have to pay £165 for the water-tap for their site!

The foibles of the various TV presenters were interesting, among them Peter Seabrook. who always chose to begin his presentation by walking down steps, and Alan Titchmarsh who hid in the contractor’s shed with a cup of tea to learn his lines.

Properties in North Bersted also boasted of free sewer connections AT THE moment there is much talk and interest around the town regarding the new estates that are being developed and surveyed daily by people travelling to and from Chichester on their way to work or to shop.

So, this week, I thought we would take a look at a previous ‘new estate’ also in North Bersted.

In this instance we can thank GA Neal and Sons for their provision of a wide range of very interesting information when they started to develop the area now known as the Newtown Estate in North Bersted.

The estate was comprised of Central Avenue, South Way, Central Drive, Newton Avenue and Greencourt Drive. If you are not quite sure of the area, then think of the fish bar at North Bersted, with the sign 'Royal Parade 1932'. This was the original estate office and

remains quite prominent as Chichester Road bears to the right heading north from North Bersted.

The developer very kindly produced a booklet, to be available for the benefit of all the potential customers, as he quoted 'for a new property in a very desirable area'.

We should first try to envisage the area, not as we know it today, but as an undeveloped open area of Bognor Regis, whose population was then 13,500.

The foreword reports that 'a township has sprung up consisting of houses of which the most fastidious might well be proud, a town which has its own shopping centre'.

It continues, 'The Newtown Estate is within the boundary of Bognor Regis. That name alone speaks volumes, as it tells of happy days spent lounging in the sunshine or bathing in the clean sparkling surf'.

Again, we should compare the buildings of today, whereby planners fit a large number of homes into what seems a small piece of land.

However, Mr Neal decided that ‘an average of ten homes to the acre’ would be constructed, each house with a gate into the back garden which was to ‘enable tradesmen and others to reach the back door, without having to go through the front gate’.

Advertising within the 1930s had to encompass a different range of facilities to those of today. Hence, they were in the position to announce that main drainage was completed and that homes were connected to the Bognor Regis main sewers free of cost.

The new homeowners were also advised that they would be able to partake of gas, main water supplies, in addition to electric lights and these services were also to be supplied free of charge.

It would appear that the layout of the site was being considered very much with the new residents in mind. The homes were to contain a range of special features, including large bay windows which it stated added ‘attractiveness and providing more light,’ and thus continued it would be ‘a house into which your furniture seems to fit easily'.

Like today’s advertising brochures, they also filled their homes with ‘modern’ furniture to encourage the purchaser with promises of the ability in one of the small bedrooms to ‘accommodate a full size single bed and a dressing table, leaving ample room for

moving around in the rooms'.

Can you imagine the excitement of the housewife in the early 1930s with the purchase of a home, which had a new kitchen, filled with modern conveniences such as 'a sink fitted in the corner leaving room for a draining board', plus 'a larder which is large in size and well ventilated? The whole of the kitchen is tiled half way up the wall with a black and white capping'.

Another incentive was the provision of a sunken bath, very novel in 1936.

Once the euphoria of this home has sunk in then of course there is the question of price and can we really afford a house of our own?

Again, I would remind you that we are talking about the 1930s when house purchase was definitely not the priority it is today, plus the earnings available were not sufficient to allow everyone to purchase.

However, again Mr Neal is helpful and provided the information needed to make a decision on what manner of payment could be used. Price, of course, is important and many of these quoted as reasonable, ranging from £540 to the quite expensive £675 house.

Can you believe that some of the deposits were £25 and repayments were to be 15s 6d. per week (about 75p)?

However, if you were in a position to have a cash sale, then at the signing of the formal contract a 10 per cent deposit was required and the balance was to be paid on completion of the property.

All-New Kia Picanto THE All-New Kia Picanto offers a new, more youthful and energetic character for town and city car drivers. Boasting an assertive new design and a high-quality, high-tech new cabin, the latest model also offers buyers greater potential for customisation and promises to be the most versatile car in its class.

The new Picanto is powered by one of three petrol engines, including Kia’s new 1.0-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) power unit. When the new 1.0-litre T-GDI engine goes on sale during Quarter 4 this year, it will be the most powerful engine ever offered in the Picanto, and the first time this car has offered a turbocharged petrol engine.

Customers have a choice of 11 vibrant paint finishes designed to make the car stand out.

Among the six new colours available to buyers are ‘Lime Light’, ‘Shiny Red’, ‘Aurora Black’ ‘Pop Orange’, ‘Sparkling Silver’ and ‘Celestial Blue’ pearlescent metallic paint finishes. The Picanto is fitted with 14-inch steel wheels in its most basic form, and customers can select one of four aluminium alloy wheel designs, ranging from 14-inch to 16-inch in diameter.

The exterior of the Picanto is complemented by new projection headlamps with LED indicators and LED daytime running lights.

For the first time, Kia also offers the Picanto in a new ‘GT-Line’ specification, inspired by the sportier appearance of the company’s higher-performance ‘GT’ models. In GT-Line specification, the exterior is completed with

red, silver and black highlights in the grille, side intakes, along the side skirts and in the rear valance, as well as chrome-tipped twin exhausts.

Inside the new Picanto, Kia designers have created a more modern, refined cabin with new materials and layout adding a greater sense of quality. The predominantly horizontal design adds greater visual width to the interior, highlighting the increased cabin dimensions.

The new Picanto provides occupants with more leg- and head-room than best-selling rivals, while a lower step height makes getting in and out easier. The boot grows to a maximum 255 litres – the most of any car in the class – and also features a two-step boot floor, which can be raised or lowered by 145 mm to create additional space as required.

New refinement measures adopted for the latest Picanto include a new soundproofing panel beneath the dashboard and in the floor of the cabin, while expandable soundabsorbent foam has been applied to lower sections of the A- and B-pillars. Beneath the bonnet, a new sound-absorbent engine cover and reshaped air intake help to isolate engine noise from the cabin. The structure of the engine mounts has also been revised to counteract engine vibrations. As a result of these upgrades, the new Picanto produces a quietest-in-class 39 dB of noise at idle – 3 dB less than the current A-segment leader – and 68 dB at a steady cruise.

They promote Chichester as a wonderful place to live, work, visit and do business, regionally. They are looking for a bright and cheerful individual to help distribute information sheets to the City centre businesses either over a day or spread across a few days once a month. They would also like someone to visit the main car parks to check that their map dispensers with City maps are in good stock at least once a month - they have helpers who fill these for them - but help is always appreciated, filling a few at a time rather than carrying a heavy load. You must be mobile, friendly and able to make notes if required to take messages to the BID Team. Help within the office, market research and support at events is also always desired but not essential.

Chi take the spoils as scores take PostSport part in annual Fishbourne Flat Five

SCORES of people of all ages took to the scenic Sussex countryside to take part in the Fishbourne Flat Five.

The race is held in memory of former Fishbourne Primary School pupils Beckie and Lucy Hassell, who were tragically killed in a car accident in October, 2005. of Venice Over the years, those taking part have raised of pounds for charity as they run, city and thousands jog or walk the five-mile countryside course 15 |01243 around the village.

Baker ran the six miles in 34:41 with Graham Woodward (15th – 40.59) and Fay Cripps (41st – 43.28) also putting in a good performance.

Despite having the winner and 20 runners, Chi's lack of numbers saw it finish 11th.

BOGNOR have given their West Sussex Bowls League hopes a big boost after two victories in the space of the week.

The Waterloo Place side had won just twice all year as they struggled for form.

But the past week has seen the A team beat two out of the top three to boost their hopes of finishing the season on a high.

The run started on the road at East Preston, where Bognor secured six points thanks to a 78-77 combined score.

Then at the weekend, they produced a shock by defeating table-toppers Worthing Pavilion A 93 to 71 to secure an eight point win.

Those two victories have lifted to third in the West Sussex Division One, albeit having played upto three more matches than others.

Fellow league one side Chichester A sit sixth in the nine-team division after splitting the points with Norfolk A. Chi next play Southbourne at home on Tuesday while Bognor will travel to

Crablands on Thursday. Both matches start at 2pm.

In Division Two, Pagham will be looking to bounce back from a heavy 87-71 defeat to Bognor B when they host bottom-side Storrington today. A comfortable win will lift the club back into contention to win the division.

In Division Three, third-place Chichester B travel to Middleton on Wednesday knowing a victory will lift them top.

Elsewhere, Selsey-based Little Spain Bowling Club travelled to Littlehamptonbased Norfolk BC for a friendly match and came away with a 69-96 shot defeat despite winning on two rinks.

Jackie Mayzes, Chris Lankshear and Trevor Palmer (won 21-17) and Jack Sutherland, John Ballinger and Trevor Plaistow (won 2117) were the stand out performers.

Little Spain finished the week with a 12shot victory at home in another friendly match against RAFA.

ATHLETICS: Chi Runners' Jason Boswell finished a very creditable eighth in the Meon Valley 21-trail Summer Plod.

After finishing in tenth last year, Jason returned to just outside Southampton keen to improve his position and time of 3 hours 43. He did just that, coming home in 3:18. Jason said: “I would have been a few minutes quicker had a trio of us not missed one of the route makers.”

TEN PIN BOWLING: Odd Bowls held their lead at the top of Chichester's Industrial Pirates League to two points over secondplaced Royal Mail Tigers after beating Mean Machine 3-1 this Sunday evening.

Second place Royal Mail Tigers were playing bottom team Scared Splitless, needing a win to keep the pressure on leaders Odd Bowls.

Tigers won the first game by 70 pins.

After losing the second, Royal Mail won the final match by 11 pins, which also ensured they took the overall pin-fall point by 10 pins.

The other match in the league also saw a 3 - 1 result, with Banana Splits beating Make It A Double.

This match was the closest of the three with Banana Splits winning the first game by 14 pins and the last game by 10 pins, while Make It A Double won the second game by just 9 pins.

This game also saw the highest individual scores of the evening with Banana Splits' Martin Street scoring 193 and 190 in his series of 540 points.

Pagham in promotion battle after nail-biting two-wicket win

Lions ready for 2017/18 PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea is confident his new management duo can deliver good times to Nyetimber Lane.

The Lions had high hopes of a promotion push in the SCFL Premier last term.

But inconsistency cost them dear and, following a poor run after Christmas, Pagham finished in fourth.

There was some cheer, though, after Mark Bennett's side sealed the Peter Bentley Cup for the first time in more than 20 years.

This time round Bennett is not in the dugout - but Shea has been keen to maintain some consistency, promoting last year's assistant manager Richie Hellen and under-21s boss Tom Simmonds to the top job.

With the majority of last season's squad signing on for another year, the chairman believes his club can match the showing of last year.

Shea told the Post: "There is no target this season although I hope we can match how we did last year.

"Like everyone at any club in the country, I'm absolutely hoping to get some silverware.

"We have got the reserves and under 21s which is all

geared towards the first team and that's the way we are playing it.

"If they get any silverware, all the better. There's no pressure on the managers to do that but, if we can nick a cup then great, while every side goes into the season with the aim of winning the league."

Pagham's ranks have been boosted with the addition of Chichester City's Jamie Horncastle and Tom Gannon, a former Crawley Down player who has recently moved to the area.

Both have featured in the Lions' pre-season fixtures which included a 4-1 win over Cowes at Nyetimber Lane on Saturday and a 4-2 victory over SCFL Division One side Selsey on Wednesday. Preseason preparations continue tomorrow with a home double header against Fareham.

Shea said: "We're really pleased with how things have gone in the pre-season.

"The joint manager situation is going fine. It is helped that both were involved in the setup last year so they both know about the club and the players. That's worked really well for us and at the moment there's no issues at all."

PAGHAM CC kept up the pressure at the top of the Sussex Division Three table with a nerve-wracking two wicket win over Brighton & Hove Seconds.

Stuart Hanks' side bowled excellently to dismiss the visitors for 189 inside 50 overs, Nikki Tabberer (4-72) being the pick of the bowlers.

After being reduced to 18-4, Pagham rallied thanks to contributions from Gareth Davies (46), Stuart Rutter (35) and Wayne Green (25).

When Davies was removed, the Nyewtimber Lane side still needed 42to win. But the ninth wicket pair of Albert Burgess (17) and David Leader (26 off 12 balls) smashed the home side to victory with a quickfire unbeaten partnership of 43.

The win leaves Pagham fourth in the table, just four points behind Haywards Heath in second and nine behind first-placed Chichester Priory Park.

With two sides being promoted at the end of the year, Pagham will need to keep their form to the season's conclusion. They return to action tomorrow, welcoming Heath to Nyetimber Lane knowing that a win could put them in pole position for promotion.

Talman hat-trick in Mid's win MIDDLETON CC will be looking to make it back-to-back wins after registering their first victory in a month in the Sussex Premier Division.

Sean Heather's side have struggled in recent weeks to get over the line, leading to a run of four losses in a row. But that was reversed on Saturday with a five-wicket win over Bexhill.

The victory was in no small part due to a remarkable bowling performance from Russell Talman, who took seven for 12 in a 12 over spell, which included a hat-trick.

Talman's spell reduced the home side to

a first innings score of 104, a total which Middleton looked to be cruising to as Angus Robson (45) and Will Burrows (48*) put on 73 for the opening wicket.

After losing five quick wickets it was left to Burrows and Nick Smith (4*) to guide the side home. Next up is a trip to bottom-side Ansty tomorrow (12pm), who are without a win all season.

In division two, Bognor's good form continued with a two-wicket victory over Billingshurst.

with the ball taking his summer wicket tally to 39 after registering figures of 4-52 in the home side's total of 178 all out.

In reply, Bognor faltered until Jerome Jones (51*) and Josh Seward (40) put on 77 for the seventh wicket to help Max Ashmore's side to victory and lifted them out of the drop zone.

Next up is a trip to bottom-side Portslade tomorrow (12.30pm).

In division three, a century from opener Peter Lamb (102) helped Chichester Priory Park stay top of the table in a 128-run victory over Roffey Seconds.

Matthew Bennison (68) also performed well as Chi posted a score of 245 for six after winning the toss. Three wickets apiece for Abz Patel, Daniel Joseph and Jay Hartard contributed to dismissing the home side for 117.

Chi, who are unbeaten in five, travel to Brighton & Hove Seconds tomorrow.

Elsewhere, Chichester Priory Park seconds lost an emotionally charged affair with West Chiltington and Thakeham by 123 runs at Goodwood. Before the match, both sides held a minute's silence in memory of West Chiltington player Tim Monday who died while playing last week.

In reply to the visiting side's 228 for 8, Chi struggled and were dismissed for 105.

Tomorrow Chi host Billingshurst Seconds, while Middleton Seconds host Pagham Seconds.

Chi City on road in their FA Cup opener CHICHESTER City will kick off the new season with a tough trip into the unknown after the FA Cup draw pitched them against Hellenic Premier outfit Binfield FC. The Oaklands Park side will travel to their hosts' ground just outside Bracknell in Berkshire on August 5 eager to show they can replicate last season's excellent form.

After finishing third in the SCFL Premier last term, manager Miles Rutherford is hopeful his team can push on in 2017/18 - starting in the world's most famous competition.

The winners, who will be guaranteed ÂŁ1,500 prize money, will then host either Wessex Premier side Horndean or Western League side Melksham on August 19.

Chi boss Miles Rutherford admitted it was not the ideal start to the year but he was confident the team would be ready in just over a week's time.

He said: "We know have tough draw in the FA Cup against a side we don't know too much about. The winners will have an even tougher match so it has certainly not gone in our favour."

Chi continued pre-season preparations with a 2-1 win over Brockenhurst last Friday before a 4-2 victory against Wessex Premier side Alresford Town on Monday.

The side's final run out before the competitive business begins is on Tuesday against Isthmian South side Hastings United at Oaklands Park (7.45pm).

Crane says Rocks' squad are shaping up well for season Next Game

ROCKS' stalwart James Crane claims the Bognor Regis squad have never been in better shape as they gear up for new campaign.

Football returned to Nyewood Lane on Saturday after the short summer recess when League One side Portsmouth visited for a friendly.

Despite missing the hastily arranged friendly due to prior commitments, Crane said the squad was in great shape for the forthcoming National League South season.

And the goalscoring left-back claims a major reason for that is club captain Sami El-Abd, who was forced to step down as manager last week after just 12 days at the helm.

Crane said: "We're a lot fitter at this stage than we've ever been.

"Everyone has been putting the hours in and we are doing a lot of high intensity work and sprint work with minimal rest.

"To be honest, it is Sami who is pushing us.

What he has done in terms of training has been brilliant and it's really starting to show on the pitch."

Bognor's 2-0 friendly loss to Portsmouth was the first chance that many Rocks fans had of seeing the team since the Ryman Premier play-off victory over Dulwich in May. Since then, manager Jamie Howell has departed for Eastbourne Borough while his replacement El-Abd lasted less than a

fortnight, stepping down after being told by employers Brighton and Hove Albion the job was a 'conflict of interest'.

That led to general manager Jack Pearce taking up the reins once again, although he will be supported by coaches Darin 'Dabba' Kilpartrick and Gary Charman.

Crane, who has been at the club since 2008, said, despite the apparent upheaval, the mood has never been better in the camp.

He said: "The change has been quite seamless really.

"Jack may be old school in terms of what he is and his experience but everyone listens to him as he's been through so much.

"How he talks to people is up with the modern game and what I would expect of someone at this level".

Bognor have bolstered their ranks in recent days with the signings of creative midfielder Pat Suraci, who last appeared for Gosport Borough, and ex-Portsmouth youth player Tommy Lea. Another Pompey apprentice to sign on for the new campaign is Tommy Scutt, who was on Bognor's books towards the end of last season.

Perhaps, more importantly, goalkeeper Dan Lincoln appears to have committed to the club for the foreseeable future, returning to the Rocks' ranks for the Portsmouth friendly.

Rocks eye up Crawley fixture BOGNOR'S pre-season campaign steps up a gear next week as the Rocks play three matches in the space of six days.

It's a fortnight now until National League South football returns to Nyewood Lane with Bath City visiting on August 5.

After being put through their paces at the usual pre-season training sessions at East Dean, the Rocks were given a real test when they hosted League One Portsmouth on Saturday.

Two goals from former Bournemouth striker Brett Pitman secured the win for Pompey, though Tommy Scutt came close to a consolation in the second period.

The Rocks followed that up with a 5-2 win over Chichester City on Wednesday thanks to goals from Ollie Pearce (2), Jimmy Wild, Jimmy Muitt and James Crane.

Next up is a trip to Wessex Premier side Horndean tomorrow (3pm), who are managed by former Rocks' boss Michael Birmingham.

Then, on Wednesday, it's back to Nyewood to host League Two Crawley Town (7.45pm), who are now managed by former Champions League winner Harry Kewell. Pre-season is completed with a match at Southern Premier side Gosport Borough on Friday (7.45pm).

IT'S NOT taken long but already the Rocks are well into pre-season mode.

First up was a match with local rivals Worthing. I got to Woodside Road early to get my football fix.

It was a real experimental game but one in which was very impressive from Bognor’s point of view.

It was great to see Calvin Davies back in for the season he came on in the second half.

We also had two new impressive players - including Pat Suraci (ex-Gosport) and Kieran Rowe, who scored later in the second half.

The goalkeeper was Bournemouth’s third choice, Callum Stanton, who stepped in and wasn’t really tested at all throughout the game.

It was a 4-0 finish. Talking to Kane Wills before the game, it was clear that the Rebels would also experiment.

Indeed, we didn’t see Wills or James Fraser play until the second half.

But the rather satisfying thing was that we managed to dominate much of the game, with crisp passing and a high level of play that was hard for the hosts to deal with.

Ollie Pearce got us off to a great start, followed by a neat goal by Jimmy Wild. Harvey Whyte and Jimmy Muitt also had great run outs.

Doug Tuck smashed a great goal in later on and then Rowe came on in the second half to add to the tally.

All in all a very impressive performance. The summer training must be working.

I still believe the real test will be our game at home to Crawley Town to see where our players are against stronger opposition.

The side did have one of those matches this Saturday against Portsmouth.

After the initial match had been cancelled, the Rocks were asked to help out after Pompey's would-be opponents, Eastleigh, could not host the match.

So the Chichester City game got rearranged and Bognor welcomed Pompey to Nyewood Lane this past Saturday.

News was also announced before the game took place that revealed that Sami El-Abd had to step down as the new player-manager due to work commitments with Albion in the Community.

It is a shame but I think having him remain as a player is key. It seems that Gary Charman has taken on the role of manager with Jack Pearce overseeing everything as general manager.

The Pompey game was, of course, well attended by fans from along the south coast.

A miscued pass back into the box by Sami El-Abd allowed the visitors the lead after just five minutes, with Brett Pitman putting it into the net.

The striker added to his tally on 86 minutes. The game finished 2-0 and really Bognor did OK. There were still concerns after the game as to where most of our goals will come from this year.

It is my understanding that we are on lookout for a proven goal-scorer. But obviously these are hard to come by.

However, I was impressed by left back Tom Bird and Ollie Pearce was trying his best to create something but Portsmouth were just too strong here.

We travelled to Chichester City this past Wednesday which took place after I wrote this, so I am hopeful that we performed well and got a positive result.

I expect more experiments with players, though, while we still have the opportunity.

After all, the new season is just around the corner with the return to National South seeing us take on Bath City at home on August 5.

I am hoping for a decent result to start the season but I know it's going to be difficult this year.
