Town residents fight crime CONCERNED neighbours have joined together to launch the first crimefighting group in central Bognor Regis for decades.

THe community-minded residents have formed Hotham Watch to deter and report crimes which happen in the roads around Hotham Park.

THey have been prompted to act and join the town’s Neighbourhood Watch network because of a series of incidents which have occurred in recent months.

Upper Bognor Road resident Steve Goodheart told the nine residents and two town councillors who attended the start of the group: “All of us know each other by face and we need to start making this group known.

“We need to get our activities in as many places as possible. We should see if we can have the Neighbourhood Watch signs in a wide range of places. As far as I am concerned, the more the merrier.

“It’s not going to be a panacea and cure

all the problems but I can see there is a lot of frustration here that the situation is not being recognised.

“At the least, it will enable us to know what is happening and we can approach the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner with those facts if we need to.”

He said he had lived in the same house since 1994 and had never known Neighbourhood Watch to operate in the area. THose who attended Wednesday’s

launch were enthusiastic about the new scheme.

Maureen Barr, of London Road, said: “It’s a good idea. As a community, we have got to support each other. If we don’t watch out for each other, we can’t know what is going on.

“I’ve been here 30 years and we’ve not had a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in that time.

Mr Goodheart, who is an Independent town councillor for Hotham ward, was joined at the launch by Bognor Regis and District Neighbourhood Watch Association secretary Drew Miller.

Mr Miller said: “Bognor Regis was one of the first areas in the county to have Neighbourhood Watch. It did cover a lot of residents.

“But there are now 221 people on our books as co-ordinators and only 21 per cent of those are within Bognor Regis. It would have been a lot more if you go back 30 years.

He said Neighbourhood Watch had become more important in recent years with the loss of the police community support officers from designated areas.

"We have lost about half of the PCSOs who used to be in the Bognor Regis area and those who remain are no longer allocated to specific areas."

He hoped Hotham Watch would be formed with a co-ordinator for every five or six streets in the area, he said.

THose individuals would receive weekly Neighbourhood Watch bulletins as well as details from Sussex Police about crimes in the area.

"It's not just about the incidents that have happened. THere are also details about the scams that are happening.

"THey are rampant at the moment and emails and phone calls seemed to have replaced those who call at the

door," he said.

Neville Road resident Bob Iles said: “THere has been significant petty crime in this area and down my road.

So, I am appreciative of this being set up.

“I hope more people will join us.

THe more people who look out for each other the better it will be – not just to fight crime – but for the community.”

Sri THedchanamoorthy, the owner of London Stores, said: “THis is a good thing. It should make people think twice about committing a crime. Deterring them is far better than chasing them afterwards."

Child's safety fear in town play area A CHILD could be killed in a Bognor Regis playarea, a councillor has warned.

Cllr Jan Cosgrove said he feared the rundown state of the Hothamton site made it vulnerable to a fatal attack by an out of control dog.

He used last week’s Bognor Regis Town Council meeting to raise fresh worries about the town centre after his initial fears were reported in the Post four months ago.

“THe town council should go back to Arun District Council (which owns the site) very quickly and say we are not satisfied with the situation.

“I have serious concerns about the poor state of the playground at Hothamton.

THere are no proper gates. Any dog could get in there and there have been stories nationally about children being killed in playareas by dogs.

“THe fencing is not high enough and the gates are not secure. All of them are far too low.

“People with dogs go in there all the

time and I don’t want Bognor Regis to be in the headlines for an incident like that.

“THese children are very vulnerable to this sort of attack.

“I don’t believe in this day and age Arun District Council can just say they are reviewing the situation. THat is a form of administrative inefficiency.

“Something needs to be done – and it needs to be done quickly.”

As reported last March, Cllr Cosgrove (L, Orchard) was joined by Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) in calling for action to be taken at the playarea.

Cllr Brooks pointed out the playarea was included in an Arun-wide review by the district council of the open air leisure facilities.

It was also on the wider Hothamton regeneration site between Queensway and Waterloo Square. But Arun does not expect work to begin for five years.

THe survey by Arun of its playareas ended on Sunday after a period of public consultation.

Historic clock will be telling the time again for shoppers SHOPPERS will soon be able to tell the time again by an historic clock in Bognor Regis.

THe Olby's clock is to be restored and fully working at its traditional site above the High Street. Town councillors agreed to spend some £2,750 to get it working again.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said: "I would not want to see this clock lost. If we have to pay for work, then I would support it."

Cllr Tony Gardiner (C, Marine North) said: "THis clock is a landmark in the town. THis situation should have been sorted out when the developers

acquired the property. It should have been done at that point of time and not when they turned the clock off."

THe clock was originally a feature of the Olby's department store, which was a popular feature of the High Street from 1941-84. It was restored by the town council outside Staffurth & Bray solicitors in 2010 for about £15,000.

But the offices are being turned into flats and the clock's mechanism has to be moved. THis work will be funded by the town council. But the developer, Falcon Homes, will pay for a new clock face, refitting the electrical supply and the ongoing electricity usage.

f Some of the students working on the mural A GIANT sun god has been painted by GCSE art students in the largest mural in Bognor Regis.

THe huge yellow image for the UK's sunniest mainland resort formed part of the giant artwork they have spent three days this week restoring along Waterloo Square's eastern side. It stretches to the top of the 2.5m high hoardings and is about the same diameter in various shades of bright yellow and gold.

THe former pupils of THe Regis School also brought back the eye-catching 2m high It's Our Future motto which briefly delighted passers-by before it was partially destroyed by a blaze which led to the neighbouring fish and chip shop being demolished last autumn.

One of those taking part on Wednesday was Bethany Young, 15, pictured above left, who said: "It's fun and it's really exciting

learning how to do all this.

"It's really enjoyable and is the first time I have worked on anything like this.

"At school, we were always thinking about our grades every time we did a painting."

Jess Haddaway, 16, above second left, said: "THis is good for the community and it is something to do which I feel proud of and can show my family when we go past here."

THe mural was originally put in place by some 30 young artists led by professional artist Sarah Gillings.

Sarah was back again on Monday with six young people to lead the new transformation of the prominent seafront site with bright colours and bold designs.

A day's break for wet weather was followed by another five students on Wednesday who are waiting for their

GCSE results.

Sarah said: "It's really nice to come back here. THe fire was a shame for the mural and the residents here as well, because they are the first thing you think about in these situations.

"What the students really like is the freedom. THey can do painting here which they couldn't do in school.

"Street art, thanks to Bansky, is becoming more mainstream. Young people find it more exciting. THis is something they perceive to be cool. It is a medium that speaks to them in their language."

THe project was the first to be put into action by Brighton resident Sarah, known as SOS the street artist, since she became a charity known as U Can Spray.

THe giant motto has been matched to the surviving eight letters. THe rest of the mural is a mix of freehand and stencil work.

SOME 100 student homes could be built in Bognor Regis town centre in the biggest development of its kind.

Site owner Abhay Varma plans to spend £5m-6m creating the residences above Wilko in London Road.

THe study bedrooms would be built in a 2-5 storey building on top of the store. Between three and six would be clustered together. Each level would have a communal courtyard.

THe proposed project, for which Mr Varma intends to seek planning approval from Arun District Council, reflects the growing status of Bognor Regis as a university town.

He said: “I bought the Wilko freehold a few years ago because it was a good investment. I then heard about the expansion of the University of Chichester (reported in last week’s Post) and spoke to them and wanted to try to do some student accommodation.

“THe students will bring vibrancy and spending power to the town centre. Bognor Regis needs to create its own identity. It does not need to be Brighton or Bournemouth. But it should be more confident because it has its jewel of the sea.”

He would ban students in the rooms from having cars on the site to avoid adding to congestion. THe response from the first public exhibition about the proposals held last Friday in the Regis Centre, encouraged Mr Varma.

“THe feedback has been good but there are a couple of design things to get through,” he said.

He said Wilko would remain open during any building work. THe retailer has 24 years left on its lease for its 24,000sq ft shop. THe lease would need to be negotiated before building work could start.

THe accommodation would be reached from Bedford Street and would not block existing views.

If the proposal goes ahead, it will add to Mr Varma’s hundreds of student rooms in cities like Nottingham, Leicester and Southampton.

His planning consultant, Charlotte Grant, said she expected a formal application for the scheme to be submitted this autumn. Approval would see work start in early 2018.

About 15 people went along to the first 90 minutes of the four hour exhibition. THey followed five councillors and the town’s MP, Nick Gibb, who went along earlier.

THe visitors included Post local historian and town resident, Sylvia Endacott. She said: “It’s an interesting scheme. We have got to have students in the town and they have to live somewhere.

"I can’t remember any purpose-built student accommodation in the town centre before."

Hugh Coster, Bognor Regis Civic Society’s deputy chairman, said: “I can see several benefits for Bognor Regis from this. THese students are going to be spending their money in and around the town centre. THat has got to be good. But I don’t know how the car ban is going to be enforced."

` Protests about Flansham homes ANGRY residents have immediately protested about plans to almost double the size of Flansham.

A total of 12 had written objections to Arun District Council by Tuesday - just four days after the proposals were formally revealed.

Pallant Homes wants to gain outline approval from Arun for 34 homes at Bonham in Hoe Lane.

But Oliver Mayhew, of Hoe Lane, has told the council: "THe hamlet of Flansham is a quiet and tranquil community of 50 homes and so the proposed development would massively impact on this ancient area. THe proposed entrance to the new development is completely unacceptable due to the narrow dangerous bend when entering the lane.

"It is already a challenge to enter and exit the lane, especially at peak times, so the introduction of an additional 50-60 cars would cause further congestion and risk of accidents."

THe 1.97 hectare site is just north of the A259 relief road and is a former paddock which is unused with two houses to be retained.

Pallant Homes' planning agent Robin Reay says in a statement: "THe Bonhams site is recognised by Arun District Council as a suitable location for housing development, being assessed...as a deliverable site for housing.

"THe site is contained by existing vegetation, landform and buildings, is close to recent residential development and will not have an adverse impact on the wider countryside."

Cafe closure is criticised THOUSANDS of users of a popular park in Aldwick have been let down by the closure of a cafe, it has been claimed.

THe lack of a replacement of the food facility in West Park for the past four months was a serious failure by Arun District Council, a councillor has said.

A temporary snacks and soft drink site is to be set up by Arun until a new cafe is created. But the current gap in provision has meant those who attend big crowdpulling events such as Sunday's Drive THrough Time motor gala have been met with a shuttered cafe and an information notice from Arun fixed to one of its walls.

Cllr Francis Oppler told Arun's leader, Cllr Gillian Brow, at Wednesday's full council meeting the closed cafe was causing deep anger among the public.

"THis council has let down many members of the public. THe park is used extensively by dog walkers and families and a growing number of seasonal events," he said. "THe council was fully aware that the previous contract was ending this year.

"Why did preparations not start last year to ensure there was a smooth transfer of this much-used facility?

"Why did the council not arrange for a temporary provision in West Park to bridge the gap before a new cafe opens?

"THe communication with the public over this matter has been absolutely abysmal," said Cllr Oppler (LD, Orchard).

THe lease of the previous operator of the cafe in the park, off Silverston Avenue, ended last March 31.

space has since hosted the big community events of the town's carnival and the Bognor Prom 10k road.

THe next few months will also see the kite festival and illuminations gala based there.

Cllr Mrs Brown (C, Aldwick E) said the district council hoped to establish a temporary cafe in the park for the summer holiday season.

THis would be achieved as part of the council's contract to manage its green spaces awarded earlier this year to ISS. THe company's directors had been told how important Arun believed a permanent cafe in the park to be. But the company's investment in other sites, such as the Hotham Park adventure golf course, meant it had to phase its delivery of its proposals.

"I can confirm that ISS are working on their plans for the cafe at West Park and these are currently under discussion," she said. "It is currently the view that this cafe requires enlarging within the existing building footprint and it is also clear that it requires full refurbishment.

"THey are looking to build a bigger cafe which will be good to see."

THe planned improvements would be progressed and explained to park users and the public to enable them to see the future plans for the park, she added.

Friends of West Park chairman Jan Malpas told the Post: "We are in contact with Arun over the West Park cafe.

"We have offered to organise a mobile catering facility for our park users who are suffering from the cafe closure during the summer period."

Chase's stamp design will be judged by the Prince of Wales TALENTED Felpham schoolboy Chase Massey has designs on the Christmas post.

Downview Primary School pupil Chase, eight, has been chosen as the area winner of a competition to create a new festive stamp for the Royal Mail.

His bright and cheerful creation of a three snowmen saw him named as one of only 24 of the winners from an astounding 205,000 entries from around the country.

THe area winners will be judged by the Prince of Wales. He will choose the designs

for the 1st and 2nd class stamps to be used for the millions of items of festive post this December.

Liz Oliver, a senior leader at the school in Wroxham Way, said: "We eagerly await news from the Royal Mail.

"Everyone at Downview is very proud of Chase."

Chase created his design when he was aged seven at a special club held by the school's Frances Halliday which was attended by some of its pupils.

One Love unites all in lineup along town promenade

MUSLIM sisters Ammina and Noor Akhtar denounced violence as they stood along the Bognor Regis seafront in a line of love.

THe visitors from the Midlands, with Noor’s two young children, were among about 100 people who heeded organiser Kate Pollard’s call to join hands on the promenade.

Creative writing degree student and shop worker Ammina, 26, from Burtonupon-Trent, said: “THe community spirit here is beautiful. We were walking along the seafront and were asked if we wanted to join in. We should all join together.

Humanity comes first.

“People need to see beyond each other’s religion and skin. We all have the same blood running through us. THis event is a good idea to show solidarity. THose who have carried out the recent terrorist attacks are monsters. THey are not human.

It is nothing to do with religion.”

Kate was inspired to stage One Love at 7pm on July 7 by the 12th anniversary of the terrorist bombings on London’s public transport and to commemorate the recent Manchester and London Bridge terrorist attacks and Grenfell Tower fire fatalities.

THe line of those taking part in the warm evening sunshine stretched for about 110 yards from outside the pier to the fishermen’s hut to the east to between the pier and the first lamppost to the west.

THey held hands as the Grenfell Towers’ tribute song of Bridge Over Troubled Water sounded out from a speaker before a minute’s reflection followed by a round of applause.

Kate said: “I’m happy with the way the event has gone. I would have liked a line of people stretching all the way to Butlin’s but enough people did give up a bit of their Friday evening to make it worthwhile.

“It’s the first time I’ve held an event like this. If we just give up on doing things like this, we will achieve nothing. It was something I felt I needed to give a go.”

Towards the centre of the line was the town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, and his mayor's consort, Steve Hearn.

Cllr Woodall said: “THis is a good idea because it helps to remember the bad things that have happened recently in the country. It’s brilliant to get people standing together.”

` Foul play by dog owners penalised THREE fines a day are being handed out to litter bugs and selfless dog owners around the Arun district.

An enforcement trial in the past two months has seen more than 200 fines issued on behalf of Arun District Council. Of those, 15 cases are nearing prosecution - and fines of up to £1,000 - because of the refusal of individuals to pay up.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said he was delighted with the early success of the initiative.

"THe feedback we've received has been very positive. THe vast majority of people who visit our town centres don't litter the streets or let their dogs foul. So, they've welcomed a clampdown on the few that do.

"THere are 15 cases nearing prosecution and we would urge those people to pay because, if they do get prosecuted, then not only will the amount increase but they will have a criminal record," he said.

Arun joined forces with EH Commercial Services in May to clean up the area's streets. EH's officers patrol in and out of uniform to spot those who throw down items such as cigarette butts and sweet wrappers as well as leave dog excrement lying on the pavement.

THey issue £80 fixed penalty notices for dog fouling.

THe scheme is free to Arun's residents because EH's costs are met by the fines it receives. THe council's cleansing contractor, Biffa, has reported the town centre streets seem cleaner in recent weeks.

Fête is record breaker VOLUNTEERS were delighted at a record turnout at the latest Felpham village summer fête.

An estimated 1,500 visitors went along in the five hours to enjoy the traditional entertainment on offer from Felpham Village Conservation Society.

Young and old, families, individuals and residents and those on holiday joined together to make last Saturday's occasion a success in the scorching sun.

THe result was a vindication of the hard work by about 75 volunteers from the society in every aspect of staging such a major public event.

Glenn Powell, the society's vice-chairman, said: "THe Felpham fête is a real village affair. It brings together the whole community in a sense of fun and pride in Felpham.

"THe Old Rectory Gardens is the perfect place for the event with its quiet beauty suddenly brought to full bloom for the day.

"Once again, we were blessed with sunny skies to ensure Felpham lived up to its reputation as the sunniest spot in England.

"THe conservation society has been going since

1980 and has been proud to serve the Felpham community for nearly 40 years.

"All the takings from the fête go back in Felpham projects, such as the hanging baskets. We always look out for new projects for the good of the community."

THe fête drew on backing from a wide range of businesses and organisations with Felpham links.

Among them was THe Fox Inn with its Felpham X Factor contest's finals on the day. THe winner was Jessie Page-Smith, 17, from Felpham, pictured front page.

Bognor Regis Rotary Club supplied some 450 barbecue meals to keep the fête’s visitors fed. THose who fancied something cooler got through about 520 teas prepared by the conservation society.

All that food was partly burned off with 1,000 goes on the various games. THe stalls were all bright and colourful and did good business.

Music was supplied by local bands Taller than Jane and THe Debonairs to get people dancing. THe popular raffle was backed by about 50 businesses.

Doors demand for flat owners LEASEHOLDERS of former council flats across Bognor Regis will have to fit fire safety doors.

Letters have been sent by Arun District Council to the occupiers of the properties in the aftermath of the fatal fire at Grenfell Towers in West London.

THe council will insist any doors from the flats to the corridors which have been installed after it had sold the flat still meets the latest fire safety standards.

Arun head of housing Brian Pople said the council's work to ensure the safety of its housing stock and those who lived in it was ongoing after last month's blaze.

"We have written to all the leaseholders and asked them to provide evidence the door is a fire door," he told the council's housing and customer services working group . "THey have until July 31 to do that.

"We will be looking to take steps if it's proved the door is not a fire door. We will be asking them to replace it.

"We will give them a certain amount of time to replace it if they choose to do that. THe council will replace it otherwise and we will recharge the leaseholder."

THe letter has followed instructions to those who lived in the council's flats to ensure corridors and other shared spaces are kept clear of personal items to enable fire exits to be reached easily.

Extensive work had also been undertaken, said Mr Pople, to investigate the safety of Arun's 3,323 properties.

"THis horrendous incident (Grenfell Tower) has made us look that what we have in place is correct," he explained.

THe council's tallest residential buildings were three floors high, only half

the six floor definition by the government of a high-rise property. None of the properties had the aluminium cladding used in Grenfell Tower. But 150-200 houses and eight blocks of flats in Wick in Littlehampton had cladding.

"We have examined all those homes.

THe cladding has been correctly installed and all the materials used meet British standards," he said.

THe cladding was also put directly on to the property in contrast to the void which existed on Grenfell Tower between the material and the external wall.

Arun was due to meet the expert this week who had carried out those checks.

But Mr Pople said he was not expecting any shocks.

He said: "He's not contacted us to meet us urgently. So, I imagine the detail we will get back will be satisfactory."

Mr Pople said the council could also consider installing fire alarms in twostorey properties to further increase the safety of its tenants.

"We are not obliged to do that but it is something we will be considering in the future," he told last THursday's meeting.

"But this is clearly very much an evolving issue. THings are developing and there is no doubt there will be further information coming from the government."

Cllr David Edwards (C, Felpham E), said: "It's really pleasing to know the council has taken fire safety very seriously.

"It is really crucial we do this work properly and, as a social landlord, we have a responsibility to do that."

Students eager to know more about expansion of campus HUNDREDS of potential students turned up to find out more about studying in Bognor Regis.

THe turnout at the first open day for the 2018/19 academic year at the University of Chichester saw its campus in the town buzzing with interest. Some 500 prospective students went along in the first 90 minutes to equal the total for the entire day at the same event last year.

Dr Mark Mason, the university's pro vice-chancellor for student experience, said this was proof of the difference the new £45m engineering and digital creative park would play in transforming the campus' appeal.

"THis a good indication of the difference this new development the university is engaged upon is going to have. THe range of engineering and creative and digital media courses will also help to contribute to the local area's regeneration.

"We are also committed to developing our work with local businesses to get our students ready for the 21st century workplace," he said.

"Engineering is a completely new curriculum activity for us and we have broadened the range of our media courses with those we think will be really important."

GIFTED Bognor Regis maths student James Silver has been named as one of the best in the country.

James, of THe Regis School, won the maths national award at the United Learning best in everyone awards.

THe Year 11 student: "I never expected to receive the best in everyone award.

I'm glad that my hard work has paid off."

THe awards gather hundreds of nominations each year. THey were launched in 2012 to celebrate the outstanding achievements of 30,000 secondary students and their teachers across the United Learning group's 40plus schools.

THis year's ceremony of 50 awards was held at Stratford-upon-Avon. James was accompanied to the award by his mother, Sally Silver, and THe Regis School's head of maths department, Simon Weston.

Mr Weston said: "It was an honour and a privilege to attend the event in support of James.

"James' tenacity and resolve has seen him consistently achieve highly in mathematics and this effort was recognised by United Learning in selecting him for the mathematics award. Not only are we delighted for James personally, but also because this is the second time a student from THe Regis School has received the mathematics award in what is only the fifth year of the BiE event."

Jon Coles, chief executive of United Learning, said: "Each year, these awards recognise the remarkable achievements of students from across our group and provide us with an opportunity to celebrate their talents, subject excellence and determination to succeed.

"Yet again, we had the difficult task of choosing winners from among a very impressive range of candidates nationally and I hope, therefore, that every award winners takes great pride in their success."

Howzat? for a sponsorship deal

` Busy pier fans PIER supporters will be out and about in Bognor Regis this summer.

Bognor Regis Pierwatch faces a busy time. It has at least seven days in the next two months in which its members will take their gazebo into the community to meet the public.

THe group was formed earlier this year to maintain the historic building in the public eye after Bognor Pier Trust moved its focus into the community after its attempt to seek lottery funding for the pier was foiled by the decision of its owner to withdraw his support.

Pierwatch chairman Jan Malpas said: “We had over 40 members at our latest coffee morning last Wednesday, pictured below. We gave them updates about our activities, as well as introducing our new ‘Pier Quizzler’. THis is a question that can be about anything over the 152 years of Bognor Regis Pier.

“Nine members got it right so their names were put in a hat and two names were drawn for the winners who each got a prize.”

THe question tested members’ knowledge about the 1d (0.5p) price of the toll to walk on the new pier.

CRICKETERS in Bognor Regis have been backed by one of the town's businesses.

THe Station Yard branch of Covers timber and builders' merchants has agreed to sponsor Bognor Regis Cricket Club, pictured below.

Located at THe Regis Oval on Hawthorn Road, the cricket club runs three Saturday league sides, a Sunday team, a ladies’ team, a T20 team and a Midweek XI as well as junior teams for under 10s to under 19s.

THe club’s 1st XI team play in the Sussex Premier Cricket League Division 2 and are one of only a few clubs in Sussex to

have been county champions.

Centre's jump for joy after skydive FUNDRAISERS at a Bognor Regis sports centre jumped for joy when they found out they had beaten their cash target.

THe Team Arena members succeeded in raising £1,710.49 with their charity sky-dive in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Four members of the team at the Arena Sports Centre in Westloats Lane presented a cheque to Jasmine Cotton, on behalf of the hospice, last week.

THe sky-divers hoped to raise £1,000 by jumping from 7,000ft to help the hospice.

One of those who took part, Katy Gadd,

said: “We would like to thank everyone who supported us. We all jumped from 7,000 ft, except for Dan Usher-Smith, who jumped from 15,000ft.

“We were all a little bit nervous before the jump but all agree that it was absolutely amazing – certainly, an experience we will remember all of our lives.”

Children share their love for books at first bedtime stories evening

by Fiona Callingham news@sussexpost.co.uk ENTHUSIASTIC pupils from Bognor Regis proved themselves to be true book lovers at an evening dedicated to bedtime stories.

Pyjama-clad Year 1 members at Edward Bryant School were invited back to an evening class with a difference to share their favourite stories with teachers, classmates and family members.

Alongside reading activities, there were also writing exercises available and yoga and meditation to help everyone relax ready for bedtime.

THis was the first time the school in London Road had hosted this event and it proved to be a success with both the children and their families.

Following the Scholastic Book Fair and preceding a visit by local children's author Giles Paley-Phillips, teachers felt this was the perfect time to encourage reading among the children.

Teacher Graham Oakford was keen that the evening sparked further interest in reading for children.

He said: “It's really important to promote reading like this. We hope this will encourage the children to read stories before bed and help them with a bedtime routine.

"Having bedtime stories every night helps to raise the standard of their reading and writing which ultimately

enriches their learning."

Students from his class enjoyed the activities and spoke of their passion for reading.

Isaac Kernan, aged five, explained how he was no stranger to bedtime stories.

He said: “We read stories at bedtime nearly every night. My favourite story is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

His peer, Tia-Louise Lane, five, also enjoys reading.

She said: “My favourite book is I Wish I Was a Cat. "I like bedtime stories because they’re full of imaginary things and I like that.”

Tia-Louise was accompanied by her younger brother, Matthew Jr, aged one, and her dad, Matthew Lane. For many of the parents it was an opportunity to see their children thrive in the school environment.

Matthew acknowledged how this benefited them all.

He said: "It’s nice for us as parents to see what they’re learning and how they interact with their friends and teachers.

“And it's great for them to spend even more time with their friends. I'm hoping this will help them sleep well tonight!"

Rachael Taylor, one of the teachers, explained how bedtime reading could improve the pupils' sleeping habits.

She said: "Now a lot of children have tablets but reading books can help them sleep better.

“It’s really important that the children read every night at home. It helps them at school with both reading and

writing."

Miss Taylor was impressed by the response they had from the event. "THe kids love reading. THey’ve all been really eager to share their books in school.

"It’s been a good turnout as this is the first one. Hopefully they’ll tell the other children how good it is and we’ll have even more next year,” she added.

Her class was home to many avid readers as was proved by five-year-old Danielle Teale.

After reading The Gingerbread Man to her parents and sister Gabrielle, aged three, she explained her relationship with books.

She said: “Most of all I like reading to my little sister. I read to her every night. Our favourite book is Room on the Broom.”

Danielle is also currently enjoying reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, something that has impressed her parents.

Six-year-old Logan Tate shared a similar affinity to reading.

He said: “I read every day. I like helping people read as well. I’m a good reader. I don’t need my mum to read to me.”

His mum, Chloe Tate, was pleased to be able to share his passion at the evening.

She said: "It’s really good fun.

Logan’s been excited about it.

We’ve also tried the meditation and yoga ourselves at home.”

` Woman foils robbery attempt A 61-YEAR-OLD Bognor Regis woman was injured when she fought off an attacker.

THe woman was walking to work when a man ran up and pushed her to the ground in Sylvan Way. He tried to take items from her pockets but she resisted and he ran off empty-handed in the direction of Nyewood Lane.

PC Stuart Bethen said: "She was very shocked and sustained multiple factures to her hand as well as grazing and bruising to her right side.

"THe suspect is described as white, in his early 20s, 5ft 8in-5ft 10in and of slim build.

"He was wearing a black or navy blue hooded top with blue jeans."

Beryl's book has terror link BOROUGH MARKET is one of the main locations of Aldwick author Beryl Kingston's latest book.

THe south-east London tourist spot of bars, bistros and restaurants was the site of a terror attack last month.

Bestseller and great-grandmother Beryl was close to becoming caught up in the outrage which killed eight people and injured up to a further 48.

"I was supposed to be in Borough Market at the hour of the terrorist attack," she said. "I didn't go in the end but, had I gone, I would have been in the restaurant the terrorists came through and killed people."

She did visit the market during her research for Everbody's Somebody, due to published on September 1.

It is a site visited by a country girl Rosie, who was sent out to work in a large house in 1908 a long way from her family.

THe experience was typical of a large number of working class girls at the time.

Most of them were workers for the rest of their lives.

Rosie's work takes her to a variety of places - to Arundel Castle, as a housekeeper to Anthony Eden in the manor house in Binderton near Chichester and to wait at table at the RAC Club in Pall Mall. She marries young and lives in the borough where her husband works in the market after serving in the First World War. "I chose the market because I knew it as it was," said Beryl, 86. "People will come back to it after the attack. It's a great market and a great place."

THe third setting to feature is the First World War trenches and the horrific warfare which took place there.

Beryl's new book follows a two-anda-half year struggle after her former

publisher ceased trading. Her wait to get Rosie's story published ended when a new company, Endeavour, snapped up the rights.

It is book number 27 for Beryl. A former English teacher at Felpham Community College, her first book was published in 1985. It immediately sold well and was followed by another best seller in each of the next 14 years.

Beryl passed a million sales with her 12th book and has delighted a host of critics as well as her loyal readers.

She said: "My books take about nine months to write. I have to do my research properly. THere is a mass of research to do to get the details right."

"I've a female relative who started working when she was 12 and worked her entire life. She was still working the day she died.

"I also had a distant relation who fought in the First World War and came back after four years in the trenches without a scratch. He would tell me about his experiences when I was younger after he had had a few beers," she added.

Town church's new era starts JUBILANT worshippers celebrated with prayers and cake as the extension to their Bognor Regis church was officially opened.

Sunday’s special occasion the Opengate Church saw a family worship service become one to remember as the £340,000 building was brought into use.

Church minister Jamie Fredricks said before the occasion: “We will give thanks to God for the extension. THese services attract all ages from toddlers to those in their nineties.

“THe children make lots of noise and lots of mess – and we always have plenty of cake at celebrations.”

Typical services are attended by 180 adults and a further 50 young people.

THe addition to the established premises in Victoria Drive provides rooms for the primary age Kids’ Church on the ground floor and teenage church members on the first floor.

Both rooms can also be used for meetings by church groups and organisations which benefit the wider community.

THe changes have also enabled the area outside the church's main hall to be used as a lounge instead of a corridor as part of the user friendly changes since the builders left last April after eight months on site.

Jamie was ordained last month to signal a fresh start for the church, with the new extension, after 18 years of being led by the popular Graham Banks.

Jamie, 44, said: “It feels really good to be the minister here even if it is a bit surreal, having grown up in this church.

So, it is a strange but nice feeling.

“THe new extension has made the whole church a lot more user friendly with a layout which is a lot more

straightforward than it used to be.

“It took the church members about three years to raise the money through all sorts of activities. People have been very creative.”

THe extension is the biggest change to the building since the church, then known as Bognor Regis Baptist Church, moved to the site in 1964.

Jamie grew up in the town and was a long-haired student and wannabe rock star when he became a member at 17.

Some of his friends worshipped at the church and began to talk to him about its message and the good looking girls who were also members.

From then, father of two Jamie became a regular worshipper and started a career in multi-media as a website designer and manager.

“I didn’t think about becoming a minister into my 30s but, when I got into my late 30s and early 40s, everything seemed to point towards it for me," he said. He began a three-year training programme split between a college in Croydon and working with Graham.

As that ended, Graham announced he was leaving to help another church.

Jamie was chosen by the Opengate members to take his place.

His training continues for another three years – and he said it was clear his new role put him in a privileged position.

“I was dealing with people when I was in business but it’s nothing like dealing with people in a pastoral situation. You get to work with people as they explore the big questions of life.

“THere is the sense there is something more and people wonder about their main purpose in life. THat is what makes it so fascinating," he added.

` Historic vehicles EIGHT decades of motoring history will be on show in Bognor Regis this weekend.

THe sixth Drive THrough Time gala of classic and vintage motor vehicles will take place on Sunday.

Some 130 cars and about 12 motorbikes will be display from 11am-4pm at West Park, organised

by Bognor Regis Town Council, for visitors to admire and find out more about from their owners.

THe vehicles' ages will range from a 1928 Morris light van to a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Other famous marques to feature will include Ford, Daimler and Nissan.

Live music will be supplied by Bare Knuckle Ride and Consultancy. THe F1 British Grand Prix will be shown on the big screen.

THere will be food and craft and charity stalls to provide further interest, along with a kids' zone of dodgems, foam pit and badgemaking among other activities.

Rotarian Robbie is honoured

` David is the new president of club NEW PRESIDENT David Cousins has been presented with his chain of office for Bognor Regis Rotary Club.

THe outgoing president, Dr Malcolm Ridley, pictured above right, passed the symbol of the position on to Mr Cousins.

More than 50 Rotarians and partners shared an excellent lunch hosted by Phil and Beverley Hitchins in Aldwick.

Formalities were kept to a minimum. All those present enjoyed a very relaxed social gathering in perfect weather.

THe club was present at Felpham Village Conservation Society's summer fĂŞte last Saturday.

It will also have a stand at the Drive THrough Time motor gala in West Park from 11am this Sunday.

ROTARIAN Robbie Burns has gained the highest honour in the movement for his community work around Bognor Regis.

He has been named as a Paul Harris Fellow for his selfless efforts across the town, the Rotary organisation and the Bognor Prom 10k road race.

THe announcement of the honour was greeted with delight by Robbie's fellow members in Bognor Hotham Rotary Club at an event at the town's golf club.

Brian Clarke, the club's press officer, said: "THis is the highest and most prestigious award made to a Rotarian and is a very rare honour.

"In 1905, Paul Harris formed a club in association with three other businessmen to serve the community.

"THe club was named Rotary because the meeting place rotated between their places of business.

"THe Paul Harris Fellow award was established to show appreciation, and recognition, of individuals who have contributed hugely to the Rotary Foundation's programme."

THe announcement of Robbie's award was a surprise as he took on the joint president's role at Bognor Hotham Rotary Club for the coming year.

Robbie will be joined by Gavin OcleeBrown in the top role, with Robbie taking the first six-month slot as president.

Robbie has lived in the area since 1968 and is a retired police officer. He and Gavin have been long-term members of Bognor Hotham Rotary Club for more than 20 years.

"THe aim of both presidents for the coming year is to provide a varied and interesting programme of activities and speakers, while raising money for local charities and good causes," said Brian.

"It is also Robbie's wish to continue

the close working relationship between Bognor Hotham Rotary Club, Bognor Regis Rotary Club, Bognor Regis Lions Club and Tone Zone Running Club.

"THe latter, as an energetic young club, are gradually taking over the organisation of the ever popular Bognor Prom 10k road race to ensure its continued success."

THe new president's nominated charity for his six month tenure is Tangmere-

based Dementia Support.

Bognor Hotham Rotary Club would continue to serve the community around the town with support for youth activities and those in less fortunate circumstances, said Mr Clarke.

"In that respect, the club will always provide a listening ear to those requiring financial help, just as it would welcome contact with those genuinely wanting to join Rotary and offer much-needed help

to local people from a club atmosphere," he added.

THe new joint presidents have taken over from Steve Playford and Peter Elliott. THey similarly shared the role during 2016/17. THe club meets at 7pm for 7.30pm on Tuesdays at the golf club in Downview Road in Felpham.

` Half a million cost for helping homeless

Dazzling students enjoy summer ball SUMMER fun was enjoyed by Felpham Community College students.

THe Year 11 annual summer ball lived up to its reputation as a firm favourite in the college diary.

Students arrived in spectacular style to walk the red carpet, cheered on by many parents, siblings and college staff.

THe school hall was transformed for the evening with a stunning Happily Ever After theme. Students and staff danced the night away and celebrated the end of all their hard work and the exam season.

Dan Grinter, the college's Year 11 leader, said: “All the students looked amazing and the team have worked really hard to get the hall looking so lovely.

"It was great to see so many students and staff enjoying themselves and gave everyone the opportunity to have some fun after working so hard.

"Many of our students are coming back to sixth form, but a few are moving on to college and other opportunities, so it was a chance for everyone to have one last event together and say some goodbyes.”

SPENDING on homeless people around the Arun district is expected to exceed half a million pounds this year.

Arun District Council's members have taken the first step to increase their budget to help for those without a home by 25 per cent.

THis will see the amount available rise to £550,000 from £440,000 in the past year if the decision is backed at the full council meeting in September.

Brian Pople, the council's head of housing, said: "THis is about trying to get a better idea of what our budget should be for the current year.

"THis a bit like 'how long is a piece of string?' because there are significant fluctuations in the numbers who come through our door month to month."

THe aim was to ensure families stayed in B&Bs for less than six weeks. It could cost £1,000 a week for the temporary rooms to be provided. April saw £30,000 spent, with £50,000 in May as further proof of the expenses involved.

"You can see how very clearly how the figure starts to mount up," he said.

As reported, Arun is about to spend £1m on buying a property to provide eight sets of accommodation for homeless people to lessen its dependence on using private landlords.

Cllr George Blampied (C, River) said: "We will need a lot more than £550,000 if the spending carries out like it has in April and May." * Grants totalling more than £650,000 to spend tackling homelessness have been given to Arun District Council by the government.

MP visits free lunch scheme FRIDAY 'Frunch' has been seen in action by Bognor Regis MP Nick Gibb.

Mr Gibb visited the Vineyard Church offices to discuss the work of the Christians Against Poverty debt centre based there.

He also attended its 'Frunch' - a free weekly lunch at its offices in Waterloo Square to encourage people to get involved and meet new people THe debt counselling service is helping 36 individuals and families with debt problems.

THe Frunch usually has about 30 people attending each time.

Mr Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "It was a pleasure to visit the centre to see the great work they do to help the community and to

Bersted Park Community Centre.

THose taking part came from classes in Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Chichester and Angmering.

Littlehampton instructor and performer Karla McCarthy said: "THe showcase was a great way of bringing people in the community together to support a fantastic cause."

THe evening consisted of several group performances, solo and doubles routines, both on and off the pole, and which included a risque burlesque show.

THere was also a special performance from Suzanne Hill's School of Dance,

help the homeless in particular.

"THe cafe and shop also help to raise funds for the Vineyard's community work."

During the visit, Mr Gibb also went to the Fairtrade Shop and Cafe in the High Street.

THis summer the museum intends to share the stories of these brave men during a special exhibition.

THis exhibition on the Polish and Czech pilots in Sussex during the Second World War is to run from July 22 until the September 3 from 11am4pm each day (except on August 6 for the museum’s Family Day).

It will include explanation boards, a film on Polish and Czech airmen in Britain during the war and a new painting on Czech pilot Karel Kuttelwascher shooting down a German bomber on a night intruder mission.

THe museum hopes the exhibition will enlighten many as to the involvement of these nations in the Battle of Britain.

In March 1939 Czechoslovak Air Force pilots were ordered to lay down their arms when the Germans invaded their country. Many wished to continue the fight and escaped to Poland.

When this country was overrun seven months later, the Czech pilots made their way with Polish Air Force pilots to France where they served under the French flag during the Battle of France.

Following the capitulation of France in June 1940 many escaped to England.

THe Poles called Britain ‘the Island of Last Hope’.

On reaching England, the Polish and Czech fighter pilots, after language training (many could speak French but had no English) and conversion training to British aircraft were posted to RAF units and to newly formed Polish and Czech squadrons.

During the Battle of Britain the most

successful RAF squadron was the newly formed No 303 Polish Squadron which in six weeks claimed 126 enemy aircraft destroyed.

THe fighter pilot with most victories during the battle was Josef Frantisek, a Czech flying in a Polish Squadron.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh C T Dowding, Air Officer Commanding RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, later wrote of the Polish and Czech pilots: “I must confess that I had been a little doubtful of the effect which their experience in their own countries and in France might have had upon the Polish and Czech pilots, but my doubts were soon laid to rest because all three squadrons swung into the fight with a dash and enthusiasm which is beyond praise.

“THey were inspired by a burning hatred for the Germans which made them very deadly opponents”.

Later in the war, the highest scoring night intruder pilot was Karel Kuttlewascher, a Czech flying in the RAF’s No 1 Squadron, who shot down 15 enemy aircraft whilst flying in a Hurricane fighter from RAF Tangmere over enemy occupied territory at night in 1942.

On July 22 the exhibition will be opened by Alexandra Kent, the daughter of Group Captain ‘Johnnie’ Kent, a flight commander with 303 Squadron during the Battle of Britain who later in THe war commanded a Polish Wing.

After the war he became the Station Commander of RAF Tangmere.

It's love-all with wines at Majestic this summer Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

LORD'S and Wimbledon in the same July week defies belief - what a feast of quintessentially English sport culminating this weekend in me trundling down to my local Majestic Warehouse in Chichester in search of some good tipple.

You have, as is customary, to buy six bottles or more to benefit from the prices quoted, but I, nonetheless, have a selection for you to consider without having to increase your mortgage!

In that vein I sought out July offers from Majestic including a 2016 Devil's Creek Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on offer at £7.99 and proving to be fresh and clean on the palate, almost resembling liquid lemon sherbet added to a hint of lime and passion fruit clearly to the fore.

THis wine merits further exploration, as does the 2016 Russian Jack Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, named after a much loved 'gentleman of the road' who from 1878 to 1968 carried his life in huge sacks upon his shoulders and was a fruit picker par excellence.

With a slight spritz and hint of guava,

this wine exudes lime and lemon grass and is pure Sauvignon Blanc to savour with a passion fruit finish and on offer at £8.99.

My third white wine selection is a 2016 Olivier Dubois Touraine Sauvignon Blanc priced at £8.49 and, given bad weather in the Loire Valley, a wine with crisp, green apples to the fore and has bite and good minerality

and would be an ideal accompaniment to a picnic or a salad.

Raising the roof at an offer price of £10.99, the 2013 Montagny Vieilles Vignes from Buxy is gloriously unoaked, has good minerality and is soft on the palate with citrus flavours, but without undue acidity.

THis wine is made with grapes grown on at least 30-year-old vines (hence

Vieilles Vignes) adding to complexity and length and could be a great apéritif wine.

I next espied a red in the form of a 2015 Château Recougne Bordeaux Supérieur, which, for £8.99, is a good summer red, being medium-bodied and fruity and recommended by none other than Robert Parker.

Cameron, wine guru as pictured above with yours truly, then suggested two Argentinian Malbecs, one being a 2015 Catena Malbec from high altitude vineyards and is well structured with blackberries to the fore, a hint of spice with chocolate notes and justifies

Method

INGREDIENTS • 150g butternut squash, cut into chunks • 300g penne • 40g butter • 1 small leek • 25g flour • 600ml milk • 100g frozen peas • 175g mature Cheddar cheese • 1 slice day-old brown bread, blitzed into crumbs

its £10.49 price tag in terms of its complexity.

For 50 pence extra expenditure, the 2016 Hey Malbec! is a beautifully refined Malbec from the foothills of Andes in Lujan de Cuyo with 30 per cent of the wine aged in French oak to add complexity and depth.

THis wine was made by Jorge Riccitelli with rich blackcurrant flavour, spicy black pepper and notes of violet. THis is undoubtedly my wine of the week oozing class and perfect balance and a well-informed purchase!

Majestic has lauded it over rivals this month – enjoy!

1. Heat oven to 200C/ fan 180C/gas 6. Put the butternut squash in a steamer over boiling water. Steam for around 15-20 mins or until tender. Drain and then blitz in a food processor until smooth.

2. Cook the pasta according to the pack instructions.

3. Heat the butter in a medium saucepan, add the leek and cook for 2 mins. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 mins more.

Take the pan off the heat and gradually whisk in the milk. Return to the heat and bring to the boil, stirring all the time.

Simmer for 5 mins. Stir in the peas and bring back to a simmer. Take the pan off the heat and stir in the butternut squash, then 125g cheese.

4. Stir the pasta into the sauce and transfer to an ovenproof dish.

Sprinkle over the remaining cheese and the breadcrumbs. Bake for 20 mins or until golden and bubbling.

INGREDIENTS • 3 tbsp butter • 4 tbsp demerara sugar • 2 small eating apples, peeled, cored and diced • pinch each ground allspice and cinnamon • 75g blueberry • 500g pack puff pastry • little plain flour for rolling • 1 egg, beaten

Method 1. First make the filling: melt the butter and 3 tbsp of the sugar in a medium saucepan. Stir in the apples and spices and cook for 5 mins, until the fruit is slightly softened but not cooked. Remove from the heat and stir in the blueberries.

2. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to £1 coin thickness. Cut out 8 x 11cm squares.

3. Divide the filling between the pastry squares, spooning it into the centre of each square. Bring the four corners into the centre of each square and pinch together edges using a little of the egg to help stick. Brush all over the Danishes with the rest of the egg. THey can be covered and chilled for a few hours now.

4. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Dust with the remaining demerara and cook for 20 mins until the pastry is golden. Don’t worry if they pop open while cooking – they look even prettier.

Dine at The Lion - the pub restaurant of choice Fresh, affordable food in a historic setting, writes Daniel Field MYSELF and a friend ventured over to Pagham one early afternoon to sample lunch at the delightful and historic Lion on Nyetimber Lane in Pagham.

It dates back to the 15th century, and was once a popular place for smugglers to congregate over an ale or two. It still has an olde-worlde charm with its oak beams and fire place - perfect for a traditional pub lunch in an authentic setting.

THe most striking thing about dining at THe Lion is the range and choice of food on offer. THere is the standard daily menu

selection which has a superb choice of classic favourites, as well as a vegetarian menu, and a super healthy ‘sin free’ menu for those hoping to lose a few pounds. But it also boasts a host of blackboard specials, starters, main courses and desserts.

Not forgetting they can make almost any dish gluten free, on request, and there is even a dedicated children's menu.

After much deliberation we made our choice from the range of starters; I the duck pâté, my companion the asparagus with poached egg.

rich, complimented by sweet onion relish and the asparagus fresh green and firm, and topped elegantly with a perfectly poached egg.

More serious decision making was required when it came to the main course for me, though not for my companion who without hesitation decided upon the lobster thermidor. After some more deliberation I opted for the goats cheese from the vegetarian menu.

We perused the wine list whilst waiting for our main course to arrive and got seduced by a bottle of the marvellous Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc all the way from New Zealand, chilled to perfection, crisp, dry and fruity with a ripe bouquet of tropical flavours of citrus, passion fruit and gooseberry, just the thing to accompany the cheese and shellfish.

My goats cheese arrived; aromatic, soft, melting and pungent, nestled on a fresh green salad, with some warm new potatoes and onion marmalade. I tucked in with relish.

THe real star of THe Lion’s lunch was the locally caught lobster in thermidor sauce.

A succulent split whole lobster, nestled on

a bed of salad and doused liberally though not overwhelmingly with a subtle yet creamy sauce, flavoured with wine and just a dash of mustard to give it a glorious buttery yellow hue.

And at £22 for a whole lobster this is not only a delicious meal but affordable too and my companion, a lobster aficionado, devoured it with much enjoyment.

Following the thermidor was a hard act to follow, but the salted caramel crème brûlée was up to the challenge, the brittle sugary topping, fractured by spoon to reveal a thick creamy sweet base, ensured the end of the meal was every bit as good as the beginning.

As for me, I could only manage a nice cup of Earl Grey with a complimentary mint!

THe Lion truly is a crowd-pleaser restaurant, catering as it does to different diets and a variety of age groups, families, friends, couples and groups.

Look forward to healthier eyes with these top tips LOVE them or hate them, we all (mostly, with my Dad excluded) use them. Phones, laptops, computers.

We use them for work, socialising, meetings, promoting, dating and playing games on.

THis digital world we live in drives me nuts! But I still am guilty of spending way too much time looking at my phone.

Taking my children camping and banning all phone use didn’t go down too well as you can imagine, but the reality once we were there was amazing.

No distractions at all. Just good oldfashioned campfires and communication! Yes talking!

THe average British person (aged 16-44) spends 444 minutes or 7.4 hours staring at screens every day.

THat’s 147 minutes of television, 103 minutes on a computer, 151 minutes with smartphones, and 43 minutes on a tablet.

We’re spending almost as much time staring at screens as we do sleeping and many of us, especially those who work on a computer all day, spend most of our waking lives staring at screens.

According to statistics, a third of adults spend more than nine hours every day on digital devices.

It's crazy! With this in mind, it should come as no surprise then that digital eyestrain is on the rise.

All this extra screen time is also part of a shifting trend toward close-up work that’s thought to contribute to rising levels of myopia or near-sightedness.

THe amount of time we spend staring at screens has increased dramatically in the last few years.

We know that our sedentary lifestyles spent staring at screens impacts our physical health thanks to the obesity crisis, and we’re starting to explore the impact on our mental well-being as anxiety disorders are on the rise, but what effect is all this screen time having on our eyesight?

No one knows for sure at this point if prolonged use of digital devices actually causes permanent damage to the eyes, but it’s well established that it causes eyestrain and discomfort.

DIABETICS around the Post area can benefit from extra support.

THe Time to Talk health service has been expanded to help those with the blood sugar condition as well as individuals with heart disease. THe service offers talking therapies for people who are finding it difficult to manage their long-term health conditions.

It is part of a national initiative to provide psychological therapies to people with physical health conditions who have become worried, anxious or low in mood.

Provided by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, the service is also being extended into GP surgeries and acute hospitals in West Sussex to reach more people in need quicker.

Dr Jackie Allt, the consultant clinical psychologist and trust lead for wellbeing, said: "THis is fantastic news for the people of West Sussex who have a long-term health condition who also need psychological support.

"People can self-refer to our service and speak to one of our friendly professional therapists. We can work together with the individual and other healthcare professionals to agree a shared plan to improve wellbeing."

THe service has built up a good record of working with patients who have long-term conditions and has effective working links with local community nursing and therapy teams.

Building on these strengths, therapists in the service work in physical health teams to allow better communication between the professionals to provide better health results.

THese include making and sustaining healthy lifestyle changes and supporting patients to reduce the impact of their condition on their work, family life and other activities.

ABOUT 120 women were inspired at a Bognor Regis church's first breakfast talk.

THe turnout to listen to Fiona Castle for the initial Cherished event delighted the organisers at Opengate Church.

Mrs Castle, second from left above with church members, is the wife of the late entertainer and TV presenter, Roy Castle and spoke about the hope she gained from her Christian faith.

She said: "I became a Christian when I was 35 and it just changed my life so radically.

"I felt very depressed and I felt very inadequate. THat changed - I felt so confident and comfortable in my own skin.

"I never want to turn down an invitation to speak. I don't want to prevent anyone else finding out how life can change for them if they are feeling like I did.

"It's important that people are able to talk to one another. We tend to clam up."

Fiona was a professional dancer and singer for seven years before she married Roy. THey were married for 31 years before he died from lung cancer.

Last Saturday's occasion was the first large gathering to make use of the new extension at the Victoria Drive church.

Church administrator Julie Passmore said the extra space had made the talk possible by providing room to enable the food to be served.

"THis morning has gone very well," she said. It's a good opportunity to get women together and to reach out to the community and bring the community into the church.

"THe church is more than about the people who come here on Sundays. We want to reach out to Bognor Regis and we want people to know something of what we are about."

THe women who attended were members of Opengate and other churches around Bognor Regis and their friends.

Further Cherished breakfast talks would be held, she added.

MUSIC lovers soaked up the sounds and the sun at the final Music in the Park event in Bognor Regis.

THey basked in the glorious July weather in Hotham Park or sought shelter under its trees around the bandstand as Beaten Tracks performed.

THe band's interesting and varied music was enjoyed by all those present on Sunday, pictured below.

THe event was staged by the Hotham Park Heritage Trust. Its volunteers provided refreshments.

Trust vice-president Malcolm Hunter said the Music in the Park series had proved increasingly popular and had provided a showcase for the musical talent around the town. THe trust hoped to provide a programme of bandstand music next year.

BRITAIN'S coastline is to the fore at the University's of Chichester's summer exhibition.

Drawing on the diverse work of 20th century British artists alongside work from private and public collections, the free Coastal Connections exhibition explores the varied shapes and forms of cliffs, rocks, beaches and harbours from around the country.

It displays rarely seen work across a range of media by lesser-known but nonetheless significant artists as well as those with more established reputations.

Expect to see work by artists such as Alfred Wallis, Eric Ravilious, Prunella Clough and Rachel Kantaris.

Until September 3, Coastal Connections will be open Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, Saturday, 10am-1pm, and closed Sunday and August bank holiday. From September 4-October 8 you can visit the exhibition during MondayFriday, 8am-9pm and weekends, 10am-6pm.

Coastal Connections will be displayed in THe Otter Gallery in the Learning Resource Centre at the university's Chichester Campus.

NEW PATRON Derek Bell OBE has spoken of his backing for the Dementia Support Hub in Tangmere.

THe multiple Le Mans-winning racing driver, below, told a drinks reception hosted by the charity why he had become a supporter of its work for the £1.74m hub.

His younger sister, Stephanie Bell, suffers from dementia and he began to research the disorder after she was diagnosed.

"We want to bring a better quality of life to people, when people come (to Dementia Support), I think about how we could help."

He said he completely supported the idea of the hub, including essential services for people living with dementia, their friends, families and carers.

"To be open 9am-5pm, five or seven days a week, is somewhere for people to come," he said. "THe building is quite something. I haven't seen anything like it before."

THe social occasion gave Dementia Support the chance to thank its patrons and supporters as well as to introduce new designs for the hub.

THe evening was hosted by the charity's fundraising advisory board chairman, Robert Langmead, and charity trustee Lucinda Langmead. Lord and Lady March were also among those present.

With a 26 per cent increase in dementia expected in the next five years, the proposed introduction of the new hub next spring is more important than ever.

THe charity sees 100 people a month at its Tangmere base in a pilot scheme but it hopes the new design will enable it to greatly increase that number to accommodate about 200 people a day.

Half of its cost has been raised so far. Dementia Support's vice-chairman of trustees, Becca Randell, and its head of major donor fundraising, Becky Stotesbury, spoke about the progress.

Becky reminded the donors how their backing was benefiting the project.

"Our overall message is to provide an accessible and flexible service, advice and support," she said, "and to support people when they need it most.

"We want them to come somewhere where they truly want to be. Every donation counts."

THe hub is also intended to be a legacy for generations to come and to inspire people to live well with dementia and to know they are supported.

SOME one in three electric blankets tested by firefighters in West Sussex were faulty.

THe unsafe bed warmers were uncovered during last year's free checks by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

THe tests are being repeated again this year to ensure the blankets' owners are kept as safe as possible during the coming winter months.

THe service's expert team will check blankets for any weaknesses in the structure and any abnormalities with the electric current when the blanket is switched on. Venues around the county will be used for the tests between October 2-31.

Jackie Boyle, the service's community fire safety manager, said: "In 2016, our team tested 535 electric blankets and found that 173 carried a potential fire risk. THat's almost a third of those we tested being unsafe for use.

"Electric blankets are a source of great comfort for many during the winter months but we cannot stress enough the importance of having these blankets checked regularly.

"Elderly members of our community, and those with mobility issues, can be especially vulnerable. So, we're urging everyone who uses an electric blanket to take up the offer of a free test."

Station has long provided welcome to town The historic building has a host of historic features AS THE railways are in the news at the moment, I thought we could take time to have a look at our own railway station, not from a travelling point of view but from the perspective of the building and its development over the years. THe building itself has been a focal point of the town for many years, at one time even being used on maps to depict distances around the town.

However imposing it is, sitting as it does at one of the main road junctions into the town, there is much more to the station than just a building. I have been lucky over the years with my interest in the complete area and taking photographs, in addition to people passing information and additional material about some of the interesting array of features, to amass an array of facts about the structure.

Over the years, many people have told me of their memories of trying to leave Bognor Regis on a busy sunny Sunday afternoon and having to wait at the level crossing for one of the many trippers’ trains departing for London and other places along the south coast.

Today, as we travel over the bridge and look down on the railway lines, this memory seems almost impossible to comprehend for those of us who were not in the area when the

level crossing gates were in operation. THe evidence of these gates is still there today, although now sadly overgrown, beside a footbridge.

If we then walk along Richmond Road, past the Richmond Arms, we are reminded that this was built in the 1860s and named after the Duke of Richmond who owned much of the land in this area. THese premises were originally intended to house the stationmaster of the new station that was being planned for the town. Further along the road we arrive at the junction of Henry Street and Spencer Street where today we find a small new construction of houses - but how many of these residents can remember Bruce Dixon’s car hire premises?

Some people living in the vicinity may well recall the previous occupants when it was used by the railway as a stable. For a number of years, the Bognor Coal and Transport Co Ltd (who were to become famous in the model railway world when a small wagon was manufactured and sold for use by model rail enthusiasts) used part of the station yard.

Also in the vicinity of the station grounds were cattle docks and yards capable of storing large quantities of wood. THese were used in the 1930s by Olby’s for use by its builders' section and stored in its timber yards within

the station yard.

Continuing to walk along Spencer Terrace, we will walk beside the boundary wall that for many years surrounded the tracks, sheds belonging to the railway, including the turntable. At one time it must have been every little boy’s dream to be able to watch the massive steam trains being turned in this yard.

Over the years the station has seen millions of visitors, especially during the period before the First World War when it was recorded that sometimes over 1,200 visitors arrived on the Sunday excursions, this at a time when the town population was only 2,000. Can you imagine what the station must have looked like at this time? Between platforms 2 and 3, there is a Saxby and Farmer ground frame, behind the buffers complete with the old LBSCR metalwork, reminding us that this was once a London Brighton & South Coast Railway station.

THere are also a number of brass plates around the station forecourt, naming builders and others who have contributed to the station. For a time there was a LBSCR boundary sign situated on the forecourt in Longford Road, but this was removed in the 1980s. Some of the windows still have words imprinted on the glass – Telegraph Office, another reminder of a bygone age.

A couple of years ago, when I was conducting a tour of the railway station, one gentleman asked me if I knew where it was possible to find three different ties on railway sleepers. Unfortunately, I was not able to answer him. He then proceeded to show me and the rest of the group this small section of line, on Platform 4, which today faces the

Cover’s complex. Apparently this shows three types of ties used within the space of three sleepers, that of a metal wedge, a wooden wedge and a steel clip – there, I bet you didn’t know that – or perhaps you did!

Over the years, the station has been in the news for a variety of reasons, none more so than the train that arrived on Saturday, February 9, 1929. THis brought into the town Royal personnel and government papers, which were needed when King George V was brought by ambulance into the town to recuperate at Craigweil.

In August, 1972, a film company renamed the station Newhaven Harbour because it was unable to use the original station. Also, the station was renamed Folkstone in 1982 when it was used in a spy thriller film as a South Coast railway connection. Pullman trains have also retired to the station overnight, when they were being operated to recreate travel excursions of a bygone age, during the 1980s and 90s.

Within the main building, there are many memories still on show if we take the time to look. Within today’s entrance hall to the station, we have the ticket office, but who can remember the original waiting room, which had a large map on the wall with all the information relative to departures?

Also here one could find Campbell & Son, a leading ladies and gents hairdresser for the town. An advertisement in 1930 showed it was able to provide Marcel or water waving for ladies for between 1s 6d (7.5p) and 2s (10p). A haircut for gentlemen was 3d (1.5p). Electrical permanent waves were also available for £1.10s (£1.50p), a far cry from today’s prices locally.

As a result, they need speakers to go and talk in a variety of settings to make sure people are up-to-date on the work, thanked for their support and encouraged to support them, not just through fundraising, but also through prayer and campaigning. PostSport Chi's under-23s lead the way as city's athletes scoop second place CHICHESTER’S senior athletics team continued their fine season with a close second place at their latest match in the Southern Athletics League.

Once again, the good all-round men’s squad was too good for their rivals and it was thanks to the heroics of three of the club’s U23 women athletes that the runner-up spot was secured at the Winchester meet.

Leading the way for the men was the reliable pairing of Andy Hall and Phil Kearney in gaining a host of second places in shot, discus and hammer.

Showing their versatility, the pair then proceeded to achieve near maximum points in the pole vault with Phil close to 30m despite being hampered by an Achilles injury.

On the track, there was a mixture of youth and experience with James Baker continuing his remarkable record of league victories in the 5,000 metres which stretches back to the mid-1990s when the club entered the league.

He crossed the line in exactly 16 minutes with team mate Conrad Meagher also dipping under the 17-minute barrier.

Will Boutwood showed a good turn of speed in the 1500m to win the A string. THere were

further maximums from Ben Collins and Alex Mani over 800m, Ben Collins and Brandon Bell over 400m and Conrad Meagher and Alex Mani in the steeplechase.

Missing many regular members, some of whom were representing Sussex on the same day, it was left to three of the club’s U23 athletes plus one veteran to make as much a mark on the women’s events as they could manage in a single afternoon.

Amy Brown had already shown her versatility in the previous match at Poole in May. She was joined by Holly Beaton and Renae Brown, both recently returned from university.

Between the three of them, they managed to compete in the sprints and hurdles on the track, all four throws, shot put, discus, javelin and hammer, plus high jump, long jump and triple jump with Renae even managing to come close to a new PB in the pole vault.

THe 60 points they accumulated between them enabled the joint men’s and women’s team to finish well clear of both Worthing and Exeter. Over 50 veteran Suzet Jessop showed great team spirit by running the 400m and 800m after going along as a supporter.

ATHLETICS: THe Fishbourne Flat Five one of the most picturesque, scenic and flat cross country races on the south coast for runners and walkers - will take place this Sunday at 10am from the Fishbourne Club.

THe race is held in memory of Beckie and Lucy Hassell who were tragically killed in a car accident in October, 2005.

DRAGONFLYERS' Anya Johnston rounded off the trampoline season on a high, scooping silver in the NDP National Individual Finals.

THe member of the Bognor-based trampolining club has racked up just short of 7,000 travel miles this year in her pursuit of glory.

Performing in her fifth national final in just eight months, the Ormiston Six Villages Academy pupil put in an excellent performance full of double twisting and double rotation somersaults.

She was rewarded with the runners-up spot in the 15/16-year-olds category.

It was a fine end to the season for Johnston who has also taken part in the GB schools elite, national league, regional team and Austria world age final competitions.

Also taking part was Izzy Hauxwell, who was participating in her third national final in eight months.

After putting in an excellent display, THe

Regis School pupil finished fifth in 13/14 yrs category (l7).

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Both girls have a string of national finals to their bow over a number of years and are fantastic role models to the club's younger performers.

"THis silver is Flyers' second national finals medal this season, having taken a gold at national league the end of November.

"THe club boast a large collection of national and international medalists and a huge number of national and international finalists. For a tiny club, that's a phenomenal achievement."

O'Leary also urged anyone interested in trying out the sport to pop along to the club's recreational classes, which take place at THe Regis School one day every week.

Everyone from across the Bognor, Chichester and Portsmouth area is invited to come along and try out the sport.

Middleton need to find finishing touch after fourth loss in a row

Chi boss set for new term CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford wants more of the same from his side for the coming year.

THe Oaklands Park side were the surprise pick in the SCFL Premier last term, eventually finishing third.

After keeping much of the same squad for the coming campaign, Rutherford is hopeful his side can at least match last season's campaign, which saw them put in a promotion challenge.

But with a number of strong sides in the division, Rutherford warned his side would need to be ready to go from day one if they were to reach their potential.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "We're just hoping that we can at least be the same as we were last year, if not even better. We shall have to see what we can do."

Chi returned to action last week, playing friendlies against Salisbury (3-3) and Hamble (16). Next up is Brockenhurst at Oaklands Park tonight (Friday, 7.45pm) before Bognor visit on Wednesday evening in a rearranged game.

Rutherford said: "We have started this pre-season as we ended last term - we played

OK in one match and then were awful in the next.

"Bognor are obviously three leagues above us so a good workout is guaranteed and hopefully our lot will lift their game.

"But pre-season is not about results; it's about the way you play, attitude and what the players put in. I'd just like them just to try hard and give their all."

Rutherford has made a number of additions to the squad for the coming term.

THis includes bringing in Dave Herbert (Arundel), Rob Hutchings (Wick) and Ryan Peake (Arundel), who is coming back from a knee ligament injury.

Perhaps more importantly, last season's top scorer, Scott Jones, has re-signed for the coming season.

Even so, Rutherford was clear the presence of clubs like last year's champions Haywards Heath, relegated THree Bridges and a rejuvenated Eastbourne Town would make things hard for Chi. He said: "We're quite looking forward to the season but lots of sides have changed and will be making more of effort to do well."

MIDDLETON CC will be looking to rediscover their killer instinct after suffering a fourth defeat in a row.

Sean Heather's side started out life in the Sussex Premier League in good form, registering a series of early wins.

But the run of defeats - a number of which have come in the last over - have left Middleton just one spot above the dropzone.

Redemption could come this weekend as Heather's side make the trip to Bexhill tomorrow (12pm), with the hosts sitting in the relegation places having just won once all year.

Middleton do so off the back of a home defeat to title-chasing East Grinstead, a match where they were never really in the game. After winning the toss, they lost wickets at regular intervals with only Gerhardt Abrahams (42) standing up to the visitors' pace attack before the side were dismissed for 162.

It could have been a lot worse but for a 36run stand for the final wicket between Tommy Davies (19*) and Russell Talman (21).

Grinstead were rarely troubled in the chase, reaching the below-par total with eight wickets in hand.

Pagham CC come up just short PAGHAM came up agonisingly short of victory to lift them into prime position for promotion, being denied victory by one wicket against Bexhill Seconds in division three of the Sussex Cricket League.

Half-centuries from Aiden Zammit (50) and Ryan Barratt (66) had put Stuart Hanks' side in a good position.

But a collapse of the tail meant Pagham were dismissed for 222, giving Bexhill a chance of chasing down the target.

With Peter Cotterill (2 for 46), Wayne Green (3 for 48) and Nikki Tabberer (2 for 45)

continually chipping away, Pagham looked in prime position to get the win - until Tim Cridland (84) and Jamie Wicks (32*) pushed the game right to the close.

With dark descending, eventually the umpires called time with Bexhill on 203 for nine, 19 short of the target with one wicket in hand.

Fourth-placed Pagham will want to get back on track at home to Brighton & Hove seconds tomorrow (12.30pm).

Chi looked in danger of falling to defeat at 66-7 in reply to the visitors' 226 all out.

But an unbeaten 76 from overseas player Abz Patel ensured Priory reached 186 for 8 by the time umpires called time.

Next up is a trip to Roffey Seconds tomorrow.

In Division Two, Bognor's fightback rolls on as THe Regis Oval side cruised to a five wicket win over THree Bridges.

Joe Ashmore was the star with the ball, taking five wickets to tear through the visitors' middle order. With back up from Josh Sargeant (3 for 22) and Jerome Jones (2 for 43), Bognor bowled THree Bridges all out for 171.

In reply, skipper Max Ashmore opened the innings with a dogged 49. By the time he was dismissed just one run short of a half-century, Bognor were in a commanding position of 111-3.

Elliott Clarke then took charge with 52 as the home side eventually secured the victory with five wickets in hand.

THe victory means Ashmore's side are still in the relegation places but now right on the tails of the sides directly above them.

In division five west, Middleton Seconds' match with West Chiltington and THakeham ended in tragedy after opposition player Tim Monday collapsed and died during the match.

Clubs across the Bognor and Chichester area held a minute's silence in his memory on Sunday.

Bognor B out-bowl Pagham for the win BOGNOR B played out a thrilling match against Pagham, coming out 87-71 winners in division two of the West Sussex Bowls League.

Having not played in the competition for close to a fortnight, the visitors may have thought the Waterloo Square side would be a little ring rusty.

But Bognor played some of their best bowls of the year in sealing a comfortable victory to take them to fourth in the table, just behind Pagham.

In Division One, Bognor A played out a draw with Tarring Priory, both teams remarkably registering scores of 70.

Chichester A put a 84-82 defeat to title favourites Worthing Pavilion A on Sunday

quickly behind them, to comfortably dispatch Crablands 105-55 on Monday.

Division three side Middleton sit bottom after a 104-63 loss to Petworth.

Elsewhere, Selsey's Little Spain Bowling Club Selsey started off July, as they finished June, with another fine victory. THis time it was away to RAFA at Bognor. Little Spain won on three of the four rinks and by 10 shots overall, 63-53.

Saturday also saw Little Spain's second Spoons Drive Competition of the season.

After a fabulous afternoon's bowling in hot and sunny conditions, Barbara Bond, Peter Armsby and Geoff Spicer (skip) emerged as winners and received their Spoons Trophies from club president Trevor Palmer.

BOGNOR general manager Jack Pearce will take the Rocks' reigns once again after playermanager Sami El-Abd was forced to step down after just 12 days.

El-Abd, 29, was confirmed as Bognor's new boss a fortnight ago as officials at Nyewood Lane looked to build on the momentum of last year's promotion from the Isthmian Premier.

But, due to concerns raised by Albion In THe Community, the charity arm of Brighton & Hove Albion which employs the defender as a coach, the Rocks' skipper was forced to relinquish the role.

El-Abd will remain at the club as captain and an influential part of an impressive back four. While he will have a say in first team affairs, day-to-day running will be passed on to long-term coach Darin (Dabba) Kilpartrick and Gary Charman.

Pearce, though, has said he will be the one to take the final decisions - although he denied it was a return to management, more than 40 years after he first took charge at Nyewood Lane.

He told the Post: "I've been here a long time and it's rare that we have got a real feel good factor. I don't want to upset that.

"I know it's not a normal model and I know that we will have a few problems going forward. But the wish of the players and the management is that we try this first to see where we end up.

"I do realise that it may not work and we go in to it with our eyes wide open. If it does not work, then I will be the first to know."

THe Rocks' returned to action last Saturday with a 4-0 pre-season win at Worthing, thanks to goals from Ollie Pearce, Jimmy Wild, Doug Tuck and trialist Kieran Rowe.

Next up is a visit from League One side Portsmouth in a hastily arranged friendly at Nyewood tomorrow (1.30pm), which will be a real step up in quality and atmosphere.

Pearce said: "It's always nice to beat local rivals 4-0. But we will be playing stronger teams than that from August 5 and we will be playing a much stronger team on Saturday. It will be interesting how we react when we play an opposition that has more of the ball than we have."

Pearce said he expected 'four or five new faces' to be part of the squad tomorrow.

Among them will be Tommy Scutt, a teenage midfielder from Portsmouth who signed for the Rocks in March but did not feature in the run-in.

Among the new faces will be Joe Lea, a midfielder recently released by Yeovil; and Pat Suraci, a forward who has been at Southampton and Bournemouth academies.

Callum Stanton, the Bournemouth under 23 goalkeeper, will remain in goal as the future of last season's stopper, Dan Lincoln, still remains unclear.

Rocks-Pompey friendly back on BOGNOR'S pre-season friendly against Portsmouth is back on - with the League One side visiting Nyewood Lane tomorrow (Saturday, 1.30pm).

Rocks' officials pulled the plug on the showcase match against the professional outfit last month after new Pompey manager Kenny Jackett indicated he would not be sending a full-strength team to the match.

But, after the Fratton Park side's would-be opponents, Eastleigh, cancelled their friendly due to concerns over the state of the pitch, Bognor duly stepped in.

A crowd of more than 2,000 people is expected to attend the hastily-arranged fixture which will help boost the club's coffers ahead of the new National League South season.

A spokesman for the club said: "Pompey have assured us that they will be fielding their strongest starting 11."

Admission is ÂŁ10 adults, ÂŁ5 for under 18s.

THe Rocks began their pre-season preparation with a comfortable 4-0 win over Worthing on Saturday.

THeir scheduled return to action tonight at SCFL Premier side Chichester City has been postponed and rescheduled to Wednesday.

JUST when things looked like they were settling down at Nyewood Lane, another twist to the Rocks' situation comes about.

In the latest Q&A behind the scenes at Nyewood, the Post spoke to general manager Jack Pearce, who finds himself in charge of the first team once again - or does he?

THe news about Sami must have been a bolt from the blue for the club?

THat is a bit of an understatement.

I have to say that we thought we had the blessing of Brighton.

But, after it was announced, it turned out that we didn't have the support of those in the club that matter.

When Sami explained things to us, we were disappointed as do feel there were some positives to him combining both roles. But something in the end had to give.

I do feel sorry for Sami as he had shown some real good qualities in past few weeks but it was not to be.

What will you do for a replacement?

As I've said all along, we've been really impressed with the feel-good factor in the club.

I've been here a long time and it's rare that we have got this great team spirit. I don't want to upset that so we will most probably continue with Gary and Dabba. I will do what I have always done and Sami will have some say as captain.

I know it's not a normal model and I know that we will have a few problems going forward. THe wish of the players and the management is that we try this first to see where we end up. I do realise that it may not work and we go into it with our eyes wide open. If it does not work then I will be the first to know.

So are you the manager?

If a final decision is needed,

then it will be me making it and it will fall on my head.

Dabba is definitely the coach, Sami definitely the captain, Gary Charman is definitely on the management team and will have influence on team decisions. I will be someone who has to take the blame.

Will you be in the dugout on Saturday?

I may hand that over to Dabba and Gary as there are far too many other things to be doing in the ground that day.

We've had to replenish the food, the bars, sort out the pitch, goals, and nets, all at late notice as were not expecting a match.

THere's a lot going on and I think I will leave it to those two as I will be running around getting everything sorted.

Are you not even tempted?

I wasn't even supposed to be here, I was supposed to be up at St. George's Park for a reception of stage one to six clubs. I'll still probably be up there on the Friday but will make sure I'm back for the game and the early kick off.

It will be hard enough this year. It's such a tight division and it's very competitive but we will give it a go.

THe players are working very hard and their attitude is good.

With the best will in the world, you could have the best manager but if the players are not up to it then you are nowhere.

What about new signings?

Dan Lincoln I am speaking to.

We also have got three or four training with us and they will play on Saturday.

After that, we will make a decision either to sign them or give them opportunity to sign somewhere else.

I still think we have a massive task ahead of us but there's good team spirit which matters more than most things.
