Former mayor is fondly recalled TRIBUTES to a former Bognor Regis town mayor united councillors this week.

THey spoke about the impact longserving Ken Scutt had on the town and its town council as three members of his family listened in the public gallery at Monday's meeting.

Highly respected Mr Scutt passed away on June 28, aged 89. His most visible legacy to the town can be seen by everyone who walks along the seafront opposite Clarence Road. He gifted the town hall's south-facing clock upon his retirement as a councillor and to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee in 2012.

Mr Scutt had close connections to the Royal Family. He served on the former Royal Yacht Britannia for nine years for which he was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal in 1973.

But it was his lengthy time as a town councillor that was fondly recalled by the current council members.

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said: "I first met Ken standing outside the Methodist Church. He was standing for election as an Independent and, even though I was standing for the Conservatives, he gave me an awful lot of good advice.

"We formed a friendship which has lasted all the time I have been a councillor. I used to go round and sit in his garden and a have a cup of tea and talk with him and we would go for walks together. As far as I am concerned, he was one of life's gentlemen."

Cllr Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said:

"Ken put this town first on every single occasion, whatever the political disagreements."

Cllr Jeanette Warr (LD, Hotham) said: "When I started out 25 years ago, Ken was very helpful. I will sadly miss his presence. He did a wonderful job as councillor and a wonderful job helping people in his work."

Mr Scutt was elected to the town council's Marine ward in November 1990. Apart from a two year hiatus from May, 1999-June, 2001, he continued to serve the town until May, 2011, when he stood down.

He was the town mayor in 1995/96, which he regarded as one of his proudest achievements, and always acted as an advocate of the town. He also served as a county councillor for several years.

Mr Scutt was born in 1927, the eldest of six siblings, and grew up in Hampshire Avenue in Bognor Regis. Too young to join the armed forces, he was in the Home Guard in the Second World War. He joined the Royal Navy after the conflict and travelled around the world three times with the senior service in a time which included his spell on the royal yacht.

On leaving the navy, he set up a private practice as a physiotherapist in Aldwick.

He worked there until his retirement in 2008, aged 80, after he had treated thousands of patients.

He was married to his late wife, Pat, for 47 years and is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

Chance to paint the town red and transform seafront site BUDDING Banksys have the chance to leave their creative mark on Bognor Regis seafront.

Would-be street artists should grab their overalls and head for Waterloo Square next week. From Monday, the town council is looking to create a new mural alongside the former Empire club and fish and chip shop site.

THe painting is expected to last until THursday to replace the original mural on the hoarding on the square's eastern side. THe colourful effect will also be expanded on to the seafront hoarding if time allows.

Hodgson said: "THe painting will be open to anyone in the town. It will take place from 10am-5pm daily and it's a good chance for people to get involved in creating something which is bright and cheerful on such an important site."

THe original mural was created by a host of young people last October, led by professional street artist Sarah Gillings. Its slogan of It's Our Future lasted less than a month.

Parking is top priority for business scheme

One of the early initiatives of the new business improvement district for the retail area will be to look at how parking can be improved.

Town centre manager Toyubur Rahman said various methods could be used to make motorists' lives easier and to entice them into the town centre and to stay longer once they had arrived.

"Better parking was one of the four key objectives outlined for the BID. THe current free two-hour parking scheme will continue. But there is no reason why we could not look at extending it to three or four hours or extending the number of car parks in which free parking is available.

"THere are also ways of making it easier for people to pay to park in the town centre.

"THis could be paying by card or paying on exit. We could try to get Arun District Council (which owns the car parks) to put in these types of payment methods.

"It is easy in this day and age to have these types of technology in place."

THe BID will come into effect next April after the success of a month-long vote among business owners within the area.

Some eight out of ten of those who took part in the ballot backed the idea. THe total number of votes cast was 179 and 143 were in favour. Six ballot papers were rejected.

THe rateable value of those properties in favour was £5.57m out of the aggregate value of £7.04m. THis meant both exceeded the majority thresholds needed for the district to be approved.

THe BID will put a 1.5 per cent annual levy on the business rates of the 293 commercial properties in the area. It which

stretches from Butlin's up to the University of Chichester campus and across to the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

THe other priorities set by the firms leading the bid with Mr Rahman, after consultation with companies in the town, were to create a welcoming town centre, improve the image of Bognor Regis and reduce crime and disorder.

"We will be initially employing one fulltime equivalent Welcome Ambassador in the town centre to provide a customer welcome and help to create a pleasant environment for everyone."

BID critic Roger Lewis said: "It was not a terribly representative democratic result when you compare those in favour with the total number of eligible votes. I will be pleased if the BID is a success but the overheads on it are just not reasonable at 38 per cent of the estimated income."

PRINCE Charles is a supporter of plans to restore Blake's Cottage in Felpham.

Parish councillors were told the senior member of the royal family was keen to visit the home where famous poet William Blake wrote the words which became Jerusalem.

Peter Johns, a trustee of the Blake Cottage Trust, said the Prince of Wales had been due to have a tour around the Grade II*-listed building but had been unable to make it.

"Prince Charles is interested in what we are doing. He will be coming to the cottage," he said at Tuesday's meeting of the parish council.

"He was going to come here a couple of months ago but his visit had to be cancelled."

Mr Johns was giving an update on the £500,000 project to restore the cottage to its condition when Blake lived there from 1800-1803.

THe trust intend to open the thatched building in Blakes Road to the public as well as renting it out to poets and writers to be inspired by the surroundings.

Its longer term vision is to fund a building in the garden which would act as a visitors' centre, conference venue and meeting room for some 30 people at a time. THe scheme could be completed in about two years.

As reported, the trust bought the

cottage in September, 2015. Two surprise donations which totalled £400,000 allowed the purchase from the family which had owned the cottage since 1928.

Mr Johns said funding bids would be made to various organisations to enable the initial restoration work to take place. THe trust expects £50,000 to be needed for essential work on the roof and thatch after the initial safety effort last year.

"THe building is stable. Nothing will happen to it if nothing is done to it in the next three or four years. We have someone going in there twice a week to make sure everything is all right," he said.

THe constraints of the site, and the lack of parking, would limit the number of visitors.

"Blake is not Jane Austen. We will not have coachloads of visitors turning up.

We would expect 25-30 a day, which is why we will be letting out the cottage and using the new centre to provide income," he said.

Felpham's county councillor David Edwards, who is also a district council member for Felpham East, said the plans had proved controversial among some residents.

"You talk about not wanting too many visitors but the building is going to need maintenance," he said.

Historic vote for new centre A £1MILLION-PLUS community centre is set to be taken over by Felpham councillors.

Felpham Parish Council members made probably the biggest decision since it was formed in 1985 to buy the new Blakes Mead Community Centre.

Tuesday's 9-5 vote in favour, with one abstention, will see the council begin urgent talks with Arun District Council to complete the legal formalities to enable the centre, amid the some 800 homes on the Blakes Mead development, to pass into its ownership.

Parish councillors will pay just £1 to purchase the building from Arun after the price was agreed as part of the planning deal which led to the centre's construction by the homes' developers, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes.

Cllr Glen Hewlett had visited the centre before the meeting. He said: "It's a good strong, sturdy building. THe facilities inside are very flexible. I was reasonably impressed with it and I think it's a good asset."

He believed the parish council could run the building better than Arun's preferred operator, Freedom Leisure.

"THey are not Felpham based. THey are a multi-site company with lots of activities along the coast.

"Are we as a parish council, run for the benefit of the people of Felpham, in a better position to run this facility?

"I believe we have the expertise around this table, and others we can bring in, to do it."

Cllr Matthew Copeland said: "THis is a big decision. Plenty of other parish councils run halls successfully for the benefit of their parishes. If Arun take it on, they will run it for the benefit of Arun - not for the benefit of Felpham."

But Cllr Michael Harvey said: "I believe this is a vanity project and we have to be very careful not to commit our community to problems in the future.

"THis council has a duty of care to its residents. Proper consultation should be carried out before we commit our council to such an uncertain liability."

Cllr Mary Harvey said: "I can't support such a risk and expense out of public money. THe people of Felpham have not been consulted on this issue. THere are many things about the centre not resolved yet. THere are many expenses yet to come, many of them ongoing."

Cllr Paul English said: "If we don't take on this hall, Arun are not going to run it.

It's going to be run by whatever leisure company is in situ at the moment.

"I have been increasingly concerned about the amount of vandalism taking place at the site. I think we might have to pay for night-time and weekend security."

THe parish council had saved £36,000 towards the hall, would receive a further £39,000 for equipment and another £31,000 for maintenance, he added.

THe approval came after a 40 minute debate during an hour-long session about the centre. Councillors also agreed a pre-school operator for the centre.

Students step out into town to learn more about community GENEROUS pupils from a Bognor Regis school have visited community-based projects to boost their own efforts to help others.

THe visits prepared Edward Bryant School Year 5 students for their upcoming bake sale. Instead of raising money from their homemade cakes, they aim to collect as much food as possible to be donated to the foodbank in Argyle Road.

To help them understand why their work was so important, children had the chance to explore the foodbank and charitable furniture centre, Grandad's Front Room.

THeir teacher, Miss Baal, was pleased with how the visits went. She said: "Lots of them didn't know about the foodbank or Grandad's Front Room.

"It's good to teach them something that's relevant to them and it's great that they can see where their hard work is going" THe students enjoyed the experience.

Bodi Rapson, aged 10, said: "I had heard of the foodbank but I didn't know where it was. It's important because if people can't eat they will starve."

His peer, Tilly Groves, aged 10, agreed: "It's good that people in need can get help from here."

Sue White, foodbank co-ordinator, was impressed by their maturity. She said: "Spreading the word is so important. THe fact that these children are doing this community project is fabulous.

"THis is real education for them about real living."

Large trees put Shirley's house in darkness all year

DEPRESSED Shirley Edwards says it is winter all year long in her North Bersted home.

THe three-bedroom terraced house is overshadowed by three giant trees across the path from her front garden.

THe largest, and nearest, a cherry blossom, is some 10ft taller than the house and its branches have begun to overhang her roof after passing over the garden.

THis leaves Mrs Edwards having to turn on her lights even in mid-summer.

Mrs Edwards said: “THere are three large trees in an area as wide as my living room and as long as my living room.

“It’s like winter all year in my house.

Mrs Edwards, 66, said she had them aboutcomplained to Arun District Council, which is responsible for the trees,

frequently in the past five years.

One of its officers had been to see the situation but no action had been taken, apart from two minor trims to the cherry blossom and the mountain ash.

THe trees were planted by Arun about 35 years ago. THe council carried out a consultation among residents who surround an open space about its proposals for bushes and trees.

“All six of us along here at the time said we were in favour of bushes and would like to see trees, but not in front of our houses,” said Mrs Edwards.

THe council went ahead and planted the trio of trees – the other two are maples, on the small area of grass immediately in front of the house she had started to buy with her late neighbour.

“THey told me the cherry blossom was going to be a miniature tree,” she said, “and would get to no more than 16-20ft high. But they have ruined what was a nice open area of grass. THere are 15 trees on it.”

As well as the lack of light, the trees have also ruined Mrs Edwards’ front garden because they suck up all the moisture in the ground and stop rain reaching the ground.

THeir branches are also favourite resting grounds for birds which poop all over the garden and her front windows.

“I used to have a beautiful garden with flowers and shrubs but all I have now are weeds from the birds’ droppings,” she said.

Advice to beat scams SCAMS are the subject of visit by two clients a week to a Bognor Regis helppoint and two others.

Advisors at Arun and Chichester Citizen's Advice are in action throughout the month to stop residents being conned out of amounts into high figures. THey were delighted to raise awareness with more than 100 people at the Tesco store in Shripney Road yesterday to mark national scams awareness month.

A spokesman said: "At Citizen's Advice here in Arun and Chichester, we support clients every week who have either been exploited or are in fear of being exploited because of some uninvited approach by a potential criminal.

"THis year, we have supported over 50 clients ranging in age from 22 to 92-year-old. THis scourge can affect any of us.

"Criminals try and exploit us all, whether by cold calling at the front door, through the telephone, by text, on the internet or social media.

"THe most current scam, targeted at young people, is based on an offer of a loan being made.

"But the only way to get access to the loan is to first pay for an 'iTune' or similar vouchers and hand the serial number of these vouchers to the scammer."

He urged all residents to always be vigilant and turn away any uninvited doorstep seller and only buy from reputable sources.

THis month's campaign by Citizen's Advice, which also has offices in Littlehampton and Chichester, is aimed at different age groups.

THis week's focus is the middle aged, next week is for young people, with the socially isolated in week beginning July 17 and the over 70s in the last week.

Older people are more likely to be scammed, according to Citizen's Advice national figures.

THe average age of reported victims is 75.

"THose aged 61-80 were more likely to victims of investment fraud," said the spokesman.

"THis type of fraud has a huge detriment, with a median loss to victims of £10,500 compared to a median loss across all scams of £395."

` Road name plea A RENEWED bid has been made to honour a former Felpham resident on a new road.

County and district councillor David Edwards said he had written to Arun District Council to call for the community work of the late Dominica Smith to be remembered.

Arun District Council has launched an informal consultation until next Tuesday about a proposal to call the Bognor Regis Northern Relief Road, with its viaduct, Charles Purley Way. THis would recall the joint founder of Lec Refrigeration, which was a dominant Bognor Regis business for some 60 years.

But Cllr Edwards said: "I have set out the case for the road to be named Dominica Smith Way. "Dominica was a former chairman of Felpham Parish Council, she taught her and lived here for much of her life."

She was also heavily involved with Felpham Memorial Village Hall and the village conservation society, he said.

His proposal, which he made when the road opened in March, 2016, was backed by Felpham Parish Council.

Training base idea for hotel AMBITIOUS plans have been revealed for a hospitality training centre in a former Bognor Regis hotel.

Town councillor Jan Cosgrove said he hoped the scheme to provide skills for future chefs and waitresses would bring new life to the seafront landmark Royal Hotel. It would also prove a fitting way of showing the town's role in British tourism as a popular south coast seaside resort.

"I am hoping a group of people may come together fairly soon and look at the feasibility of the hotel becoming a training centre for the catering and hospitality sectors," said Cllr Cosgrove (L, Orchard) at Bognor Regis Town Council's meeting on Monday.

"THe idea I feel very strongly about is one which would be a suitable use for this site and I am trying to get it started.

"I want to be the person who gets it together and then get the experts in to do it.

"I think it's a worthwhile idea and I think the owner may be amenable to that suggestion, but I'm not saying so for sure.

"I can't think of a better use for that hotel and or a better place for it - or a better affirmation of Bognor Regis's role in the hospitality industry and it would be unique in the town."

His suggestion was welcomed by Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine). He said: "I like this. It's an excellent idea but I can't say any more because I'm a member of Arun District Council's development control committee and I have to keep an open mind."

THe Royal Hotel on THe Esplanade has been closed to visitors for about two years.

Part of the historic building has continued to be used for ten studio and one-bedroom

flats after planning approval was granted

by Arun in 1988.

THe town council has objected to a new planning application by Arundel Electrical to change the use of the redundant hotel and function room/licensed bar in the basement, ground floor, second floor and third floor to 18 flats.

THis is an increase of eight flats on the planning approval for ten flats given by Arun in 2015.

Arundel Electrical's planning agent, Stephen Jupp, says in a statement to Arun a survey had shown £1.5m was needed to fully repair the four-storey building dating back to about 1890.

"Externally, the property is noted to be in poor repair and appears to have been neglected for a number of years. Clearly, as an exposed seafront building, a substantive programme of annual maintenance is required to ensure the building is kept in good condition.

"Given the neglect, major work will be required not only to secure the future of the building but also to improve its appearance to passing and destination customers."

But the town council has objected to the proposal. Its members said the change of use failed to promote tourism because of the limited number of visitors' rooms in the town and would not reverse the decline of the seafront.

THe plan has also seen an objection from Alison Sheppey. THe resident, of THe Steyne, told Arun she was concerned about parking from 18 flats. "(THere is) oversubscribed parking in THe Steyne already and has got worse over the 15 years we have lived here," she wrote.

Representatives from the council and Crayfern met last week at a handover ceremony for the homes.

Arun acquired the homes at below market cost because of the planning restriction.

It is using income from right to buy sales and surplus funds from the housing revenue account to provide these new homes.

FAMILIES in need of a home can move into new properties in Barnham.

THe Arun District Council housing is the first of its kind since 1989. It will help to meet the demand for social housing which sees 73 in the top band of the council's housing waiting list.

THe nine newly-built properties that are part of the Fox's Furlong development in Barnham have been acquired by the district council.

THey will be added to the council's housing stock to replace some of the homes that have been sold under the right to buy agreement.

Cllr Trevor Bence, Arun's cabinet member for residential services, pictured left third left, was pleased to see the completion of the new council housing.

Alan's uniting Arun councils

` Ray congratulated about his honour CONGRATULATIONS have been given to Pagham Parish Council's chairman for his honour from the Queen.

His fellow councillors took the chance at their first meeting since Cllr Ray Radmall's BEM was announced to praise him for the effort he had put into the community.

A round of applause greeted Cllr Radmall, below, at the start of last Tuesday's meeting of the parish council's planning committee.

Cllr Radmall said: "A lot of people have come before me from this community to work for the community. THis medal is for the community as much as it is for me."

But Cllr Phil Higson said: "You would not have got this medal if you had not put all the effort into your council work."

Cllr David Huntley said: "You are being modest about your efforts."

As reported, Cllr Radmall received his BEM in the Queen's Birthday Honours List last month. It was awarded for his commitment to Pagham in 25 years on the parish council as well as for Pagham Beach residents. He has lived in the area for more than 40 years.

Dementia advice for firefighters FIREFIGHTERS have been learning in Bognor Regis how to recognise and understand dementia.

THe community safety officers of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have worked with staff at THe Chestnuts dementia day centre in London Road on an innovative project, pictured above. THey have spent special days there shadowing the care team, interacting with their users and finding out about the centre.

Jackie Boyle, the service's community fire safety manager, said: "Our community fire safety officers are now encountering dementia on an almost daily basis so this project is all about getting to know each other. It's allowing THe Chestnuts to gain more of an understanding of our prevention work, while our team members are able to learn from the wonderful staff at the centre which will help them each day in the situations they face."

As cases of dementia increase, it is becoming more important for the fire and rescue service's staff to be able to recognise the wide-ranging symptoms, to deal with potentially adverse behaviour and to feel confident in communicating with those living with the condition.

THe community fire safety officers visit vulnerable residents in their homes to offer fire safety advice and guidance, fit smoke alarms and answer questions about domestic safety.

Assistant manager at THe Chestnuts, Teri Humphrey, said: "THe way dementia manifests differs from person to person.

"THe chance for the fire service's safety officers to experience dementia in a real-life setting will enable them to firstly recognise the condition, but also to gain a better understanding of how to communicate with somebody living with the disease."

A NEW leader from Aldwick has been chosen to bring together parish councils to tackle Arun District Council.

Alan Smith has been appointed as latest chairman of the Arun District Association of Local Councils (ADALC).

THis is the umbrella group which represents views of all 22 town and parish councils across the district.

One of Mr Smith's first tasks will be to prepare for a crucial meeting with the district council in September.

"THis will give us the chance to talk to them about matters of concern," he said.

"I am talking to my vice-chairman, Tony Gardiner (Bognor Regis Town Council) and secretary, Andrew Gardiner, to find out more details.

"THe whole point of ADALC is to increase links between the councils.

"At the moment, there is not a lot of communication between the parish councils. THe more we communicate, the more we see what problems the parishes have.

"In Aldwick, we are surrounded by three other councils but we don't really get out to meet them. THis is the opportunity for me to do it and then report back to my council what I think.

"When you are a member of one council, you only see matters from that council's point of view. By talking to other councils, you get to understand what their views are."

He said large examples concerned the four major housing developments planned for North Bersted and Pagham.

None were sited in Aldwick but they

would all have an effect on its residents if they were built.

"We need to communicate with Pagham, Bersted and Bognor Regis councils because those schemes will impact on Aldwick," he said.

Mr Smith has been an Aldwick Parish Council member since October, 2014.

He was chosen as its representative for ADALC last year. He was asked to stand as chairman when his predecessor left the role recently.

He still remains chairman of Aldwick council's finance committee.

Efforts of Scouts and volunteers honoured in emotional evening A RECORD number of people came together to celebrate the achievements of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers from across Bognor Regis.

THe latest annual general meeting of the Bognor Regis and District Scouts saw more than 100 people attend and watch as their peers, friends and family members were honoured for their work.

As well as discussing the year's accomplishments as a company, the meeting served as a platform to distribute the coveted Bongo Awards.

It was also a bitter-sweet evening for district commissioner Ally Dodd, by whom the awards were started, as she handed over her five-year position to successor Jake Shoebridge.

Mrs Dodd was pleased to see how busy the evening was.

She said: "It's very strange to no longer be the district commissioner.

"But it's lovely to see everyone here and to see an AGM so busy. I will be taking on a new role for the Scouts in September though, so I'm looking forward to that."

At 26 years old, Jake is the youngest district commissioner the group has seen in a long time.

Jake was excited for the year to come.

He said: "It's amazing. It's such a great district anyway. I'm looking forward to the challenge and hopefully we will continue to grow year after year."

He also acknowledged the importance of the awards. "Evenings like this are really nice. THey give the younger Scouts something else to achieve," he said.

A range of awards were presented to those

involved, not just the Scouts themselves, including a Special Recognition award, an On the Air Award and the District Commissioners Award.

For everyone there, it was essential to recognise the efforts of all the volunteers.

Committee member Brian Heather said: "THe most important fact to remember is that everyone involved is a volunteer.

"THese groups work because everyone comes together as a unit."

THe winners of the awards expressed their love for the Scouts.

Liam Gaughan, aged seven, pictured inset with dad Kevin, won the Beaver Scout of the Year. He said: "I like the friends I've made and I love going on the hikes."

Explorer Freddie Morris, 14, has been a part of the Scouts for eight years and was awarded the Young Persons Special Achievement Award. He said: "I'm really happy about it. It's a good award to get. It shows our work has been recognised."

Other Explorers such as Marnie Lord, 17, spoke of the new opportunities they were afforded. She said: "I like that we get to try activities that we wouldn't otherwise get to do. It also teaches us a lot of life skills."

Sixteen-year-old Zack Hobbs agreed. He said: "Every night at Explorers is different, it's never the same. And I've made so many new friends."

Richard Beckett, chairman of the Bognor Regis and District Scouts, enjoyed the evening. He said: "THis is the largest AGM we've had in the five years I've been here, which is heartening.

"THe number of young people getting involved is increasing every year. However,

the number of leaders we have is not going up. We will have a recruiting tent at Southway School on July 7 and I hope that will spark interest.

"Our leaders have always run a good programme. We are putting back in what we had as kids."

Church Farm Holiday Village's operator, Bourne Leisure, has applied to extend the destination's opening time by another month.

THis would enable the site of 880 pitches to open until November 30 each year instead of October 31.

Bourne Leisure's planning agent, Rachel Davies, says in a statement: "THere is visitor demand in Arun and at Church Farm Holiday Village, an established holiday park, to support an additional month of operation.

"Church Farm Holiday Village contributes significantly to the tourism economy of Arun by providing a significant number of jobs during the peak season. THe proposal to extend (the) occupancy period at the park will increase the number (of) visitors to the local area and associated employment opportunities in any year."

THe 23-hectare holiday village's opening period was fixed from March 1-October 31 in 1956 because of the flooding risk at the Church Lane site and confirmed by a planning inspector in 1993.

But chartered engineer Alistair Tindle said a joint project between Bourne Leisure and the Environment Agency had seen the run-down earth embankment which protected the site improved in 2015.

THe serious threat of flooding to the site and surrounding residential areas annually had been replaced by a protection level equal to a flood occurring once in 200 years - or a five per cent chance every year.

New chapter for author Hilary tendency to hang on to people who are not good for us.

"It's not just partners. It can be friends as well," she said. "We've all met up with people again and then thought why have we done it."

Hilary moved to the Chichester area three years ago after almost 65 years in London and has been familiar with the Sussex coast all her life.

A set of grandparents lived in Walberton, she went to school in Brighton and many of her family members still live there.

She trained as a nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and then as a marriage guidance counsellor.

A degree in English literature in her 30s saw her move into journalism, with a Mind, Body, Spirit column for the Daily Express.

Writing has always been a hobby and she endured five rejections before her first book was accepted.

She has ridden the wave of sales in book chart territory ever since. But each wait for a new novel is worrying.

"You don't know if people are going to like it or not. People around you say nice things but they are not going to be horrendous," she added.

"It's still a fantastic way of earning a living, though. It's like a hobby gone large. It is a completely different way of writing.

"If you are doing it for a hobby, you might sit down when you feel like it and have a nice time and then not write again for a week. Now, there are deadlines and publishers to deal with.

"It's still fun but I have to keep my eye on the professional side of it."

GAMBLING will be among the subjects of a talk next week by Chichester author Hilary Boyd.

THe hard-hitting subject features strongly in Hilary's latest book, A Perfect Husband, which is published three days after her first appearance in what is now her home city.

Her talk at 6pm on Monday at Waterstones for the Festival of Chichester (tickets £4, £3 redeemable against book purchase) will be unlike any other she has given during her six years as a fulltime author.

"It's much scarier doing a talk in my back garden because, if it doesn't go well, I can't walk away. If I was talking somewhere like Hay-on-Wye, I could just leg it and get on a train," she said.

Hilary, 68, is also unsure how her fourth book will be received by her hundreds of thousands of readers.

THey have devoured her previous bestsellers like The Lavender House and Tangled Lives after a series of favourable reviews which have compared her to Joanne Trollope and praised her for focusing on older characters and their emotional and romantic lives.

"THis is bit edgier," said Hilary. "I don't know how that's going to go down with the readers. It's a complicated emotional subject. I've always found addiction fascinating.

"What makes an alcoholic get out of bed and have another drink? It's the same with a gambler like Freddy in my book.

He and Lily are romantics and really love each other. But he's a gambler."

Lily finds it harder to break away than she thought because she is as addicted to Freddy as he is to gambling. THat experience was typical, said Hilary.

Performances of musicians hit right notes at festival YOUNG musicians showed their skills at the latest summer festival in Bognor Regis.

THe 15 mainly guitarists took to the stage at the Regis School of Music to impress adjudicator Kay Tucker with an array of talent. Among the winners in the Performers’ Platform event last weekend was James Connelly, nine, who received a cup from Ms Tucker for the good listening provided by his rendition of three pieces.

THey were a James Bond theme, Comanche and a duet with the school’s joint founder, Sacha Levtov.

THis is the second year in a row James has won the trophy for reaching the required standard. He said: “It’s really pleasing for me to have the won. I love the rhythm of playing the guitar and the way you need to move your fingers over the keys.

Ms Tucker said James’s version of the James Bond theme summed up the film and contained the right variance in loud and soft sounds.

“THere was a good tempo in your Comanche and it flowed well for the most part. Your control over the sound and the tempo was absolutely superb, the melody was tight and it was all rhythmically true."

THe Performers’ Platform for those aged between 8-18 took place at the Sudley Road school last Saturday and Sunday mornings.

As well as the guitar, instruments played included the piano, cello and harp.

Performers were also in duets, and a small ensemble, as well as soloists. Twins Olivia and Jack McIntyre, nine, played guitar on their own and as a duet to earn praise from Ms Sutton.

Olivia said: “I like the guitar because I can play different sounds. Playing in public makes you feel nervous but you get used to it.”

Jack said: “It is nerve wracking when you are playing because you are concentrating on doing it right.”

THey practise together every night as well as attend lessons with Mr Levtov.

THeir mother, Olivia McIntyre, said: “THey have been playing guitar since they were in Year Two at school but they have come on massively since they joined the Regis School of Music eight months ago. Sasha is inspirational because they are given so many opportunities to perform so it comes naturally to them."

THe recitals were followed on Sunday afternoon by a performance by the Alegria Piano Trio of former school of music pupil Imy Luc (piano), Vanessa White (violin) and Elisabeth Elliott (cello).

Wednesday saw the school’s current students and participants in Performers’ Platform play music illustrated by their pictures and drawings. A gala concert with an exhibition and awards ceremony closes the festival at 7.30pm tomorrow.

` Fire safety visits URGENT fire safety inspections are being carried out of high rise buildings such as Fitzleet House in Bognor Regis.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is carry out the visits to all buildings at least six floors tall with the landlords and building managers so that the safety of the structures can be properly assessed.

THese investigations are taking into account all of the issues identified by the government in the wake of the fatal Grenfell Tower fire in London.

THey include the presence and type of any possible cladding. A fire and rescue service spokesman said: "Once each residential building has been checked, plans are being put in place to call at each individual home within them."

Talks with the NHS had not reveal any immediate risks to hospital properties but inspections would follow, he added.

THe service's deepest sympathies remained with those affected by the devastating fire in London and the emergency services who have been dealing with the tragic loss of life.

A TOWN councillor drop-in event is being held in Bogor Regis town centre next week.

THe event from 10.30aqm12.30pm on THursday will take place in the London Road precinct.

Several town councillors will be present at the red gazebo to meet residents and talk to them about town matters of interest.

“A total of 75 direct jobs are being created by the development. THis will confirm our place among the top three employees in the town.

"We are being sponsored by, or are working, with 40 companies like Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Sony. At the heart of the project is our commitment to playing an active role in the economic regeneration of the area.

"We hope it will also encourage young people who would never have thought of going to university to consider it,” said Mr Higson, the vice-chancellor for sustainability and enterprise.

THe new development’s role will be divided into two disciplines – engineering and design and creative and digital technologies.

Both are sectors in need of newly qualified employees in a range of businesses locally and nationally from start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises to multi-national giants.

Maths, computing and computer aided design will be catered for, along with new jobs like 3D animation.

"Some of these jobs didn't exist ten years ago," said Mr Higson.

THey will be among more than 30 courses on offer at the open days. Also available will be two new apprenticeships backed by at least 12 employers - for chartered engineering and digital solutions (software engineering).

Film expert to work in town HOLLYWOOD is coming to Bognor Regis.

One of the film world's top animators is to work at the town's new engineering and digital technology park on the University of Chichester campus.

Max Tyrie has been appointed as the head of 3D animation to show the scale of the university's ambition for the £45m development.

A former employee of Sony Picture Imageworks, he has since worked on box office gold such as Kingsman: The Golden Circle this year and Suicide Squad and Alice Through the Looking Glass last year as well as the two Amazing Spider-Man and Smurf movies.

Max won two Bafta awards for his work on the Walking with Dinosaurs documentaries for the BBC in 2003 and 2004. His skills on Walking with Beasts saw him nominated for a Primetime Emmy award.

Michael Holley, the university's head of creative and digital technologies, said the facilities in the new development would put the university among the leaders in creativity courses.

“THis will make us one of the best universities for these subjects in the country and in the south, for sure.

“THe department will be around 200 students at its start in September, 2018, and that will grow to 500 students in two years. THere will be 1,200-1,500 students in the new park. Most of these will be new students to the university and new to the campus as well.”

THe creative technologies will have 15-16 staff at the start and that is set to grow to up to 60. THe university wanted the initiative to be a beacon for the town.

Other courses on offer include BSc (Hons) degrees in creative and digital media, digital film technologies and digital film production and

screenwriting.

“THis is vital not just for the university but for the town as well. THis is a new department built on an existing film and media department. It will give us the opportunity to train people to go straight into the industries, "said Mr Holley.

“I have been working for this for many years. It will give the chance to offer students to study in some of the fastest growing creative industries in the country – like 3D animation, film production and gaming – and in which the country is leading the world.

“THese knowledge-based skills are

going to be very important for the country whatever happens with Brexit.”

THe London Metropolitan Orchestra – famed for its work on film and TV soundtracks – will use the studio for its recordings. Its latest work saw it contribute to London Grammar’s new album.

“We want the town to be proud of what we are doing. It’s all about raising aspirations and showing you don’t have to be a 3A student to be a brilliant film maker or graphic artist," he added.

THe university is also building rooms for 171 students as part of the scheme.

PASSENGERS will soon benefit from updated times for bus services around Bognor Regis.

THe real time information displays are set to be installed at all the High Street bus shelters by the end of this month.

THey show arrival times and destinations of the next services to arrive and ensure passengers are aware of any delays as they queue.

THe installation of the technology was revealed to councillors by West Sussex County Council area highways officer Ben Whiffin last week.

He was responding to a question from town and district councillor Jim Brooks (I, Marine). He stated money was paid

by Sainsbury's as part of the permission for its Shripney Road store to benefit the town. Improving transport was one of the uses earmarked for the funding.

"So far, we have one display in Yapton but nothing else. When will we get our bus displays please so shoppers can 'trust' the buses and not waste shopping time hanging around at bus stops?"

Cllr Brooks also called for the return of the banners on the eastern side of all the lamp-posts in the London Road precinct installed during the public realm improvement works.

"THese quite attractive lamp-posts are now disfigured and unbalanced," he said. But the situation lost valuable chances to promote town events as well.

He wanted the white lighting installed along the High Street as part of the works returned as well. Eight of those lights had been replaced with the old 'orange' lights.

"THis unnatural light discolours plants and people and does not help in our efforts to encourage a night-time economy," he stated at the Joint Western Arun Area Committee last week.

Magical college visit by primary students f The cast of Little Shop of Horrors

Show of horrors is a big success A SCIENCE fiction musical proved an out of this world success for Felpham students.

THe Key Stage 4 and 5 pupils at Felpham Community College showed all their musical theatre talents with their summer production of Little Shop of Horrors.

THe students put their music and drama GCSE and A-level studies to the test in two fantastic evening shows in front of parents, students, staff and governors. THe audiences delighted in the performances, which resulted from months of tireless rehearsals learning the production in extra-curriculur clubs.

Nicole Matthews, the college's curriculum leader for music, said:

CHILDREN travelled through time on their first visit to Felpham Community College.

Year 5 students, from Nyewood, Bersted Green, South Bersted, Edward Bryant, Rose Green and Bishop Tufnell schools found the college to be magic.

Re-living the tales of old, finding out about the Felpham dragon and lessons in casting spells all featured during their days experiencing the secondary school environment for the first time.

Dozens of students enjoyed conjuring dragons in the science department, developing bloodcurdling spells in

It’s Herb Time ONE of the simplest starter ideas for anyone new to gardening is to create an herb garden - perfect for novice planters and loved by cooks everywhere. From sage to thyme, rosemary to clipped bay and flowering chives, you can combine a variety of herbs in one space that will produce long-lasting displays as well as regular pickings for the kitchen.

If you don’t have much or any outside space then think about keeping a few pots of herbs on your balcony or windowsill – easy to reach to and there’s no rushing out to take cuttings in the pouring rain when you are cooking your favourite dish!

THere are so many herbs to choose from, but the top five classic favourites are …

MINT - really easy to grow and it will cope with shady parts of the garden as well as full sun, but you need to keep it well watered and feed it. If you pick regularly it will grow bushy and give you leaves from April to November.

Whenever it begins to look straggly, repot into fresh compost.

CHIVES - great in salads or as a soup garnish, they have lovely bee-friendly flowers and do well in partial sun. THey like damp soil, so make sure they don’t dry out. You can plant them from seed or pot a growing plant.

SAGE - its velvety leaves and small, purple flowers look spectacular and it requires very little maintenance over the years. It thrives in dry conditions so avoid watering it too much. Sage loses some of its flavour after about three years, but you can take cuttings and grow new, aromatic plants.

BAY - bays are both practical and ornamental hardy evergreen trees with aromatic leaves and small yellow flowers in spring. THey can grow to 40ft (12m) high but can be kept small by growing in a pot and pruning. Keep them in a sheltered area in full or partial sun. THey have very shallow root systems so in dry conditions you will need to water them, but other than that they are very low maintenance.

ROSEMARY - an evergreen, perennial

hardy shrub with aromatic leaves and small purple or white flowers in late spring. It thrives in good soil in full sun and needs minimal pruning or attention throughout the growing season. You can leave rosemary in a container for several years before repotting and it can grow to a height of around 3ft (1m).

THese simple tips from the Royal Horticultural Society on how to plant herbs in a container should guarantee success and hassle free growing: • Choose containers that give herbs a deep root run where they can be left undisturbed.

• Use a gritty, well-drained compost • Keep the compost moist, but never soggy and use a balanced fertiliser to encourage leafy growth As many herbs have Mediterranean origins they like being in the sun, which means they really come into their own during the summer months … perfect timing for bringing an aromatic flavour to outdoor cooking or a zing to seasonal salads.

THis project aims bring alive the lost plays during WW1 offering performers and audiences a unique theatrical experience.

Lads in the Village premièred at the Kings THeatre in 1918 and it hasn’t been performed there since. A comedy set in the WW1 to lift moral of the troops Lads in the Village is best described as a cross between Black Adder and Allo, Allo!: there is lots of dressing up,

mistaken identity and musical hilarity.

Other performances included in the project are: • Mayfield Secondary School will be performing short WWI plays they have produced and written entitled Twisted Events; • A short documentary film, Theatre of War, produced by St George’s Beneficial School; • A performance by Louise Jordan – No petticoats Here (remembering the women of the First World War through song).

Katrina Henderson, community engagement officer at the theatre, is excited to see the plays on stage. She said: "Each segment of the project is quite unique and gives a clear insight into theatrical life in World War One”.

Aldi's wines to keep your summer party flowing Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

IT PAYS to shop around so, to this end, I meandered to my nearest Aldi store and happened to espy an Exquisite Collection 2016 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie. THis exuded crisp apple and lemon flavour, was soft and clean on the palate with a hint of cream soda and was retailing at a highly competitive price of £4.99 - an ideal picnic wine and one well worth sampling at this entry-level price.

For a further pound expended, I was able to procure a 2016 Freeman's Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which, I have to confess, exceeded my expectations with its undoubted complexity, copious layers of flavour and hints of gooseberry, lime and passion fruit to the fore - a very smooth well-crafted wine which I unreservedly commend to you.

For £6.99 I noted a 2016 French Haut - Poitou Sauvignon Blanc under the forgotten one label, and found it to be decidedly average, despite its close proximity to Sancerre, but reminiscent of a good old French Sauvignon Blanc.

Moving on to the red grape variety,

the 2015 Château Poliane Côtes De Bourg priced at £5.99, tastes of spicy blackberries and red fruit flavours and is part of Aldi's Exquisite Collection.

THis wine is palatable, but would benefit from further ageing.

My wine of the week, however, is the 2015 Wakefield 80 Acres Shiraz Viognier from South Australia which prides itself on being totally carbon neutral and can be purchased for an outlay of just £5.99.

Historically rural land in South Australia was sold to settlers in 80 acre blocks and the Wakefield 80 Acres was launched by the Taylor family in 2007.

THeir commitment to being 100 per cent carbon neutral involves environmental stewardship including water recycling, organic cultivation (with the use of sheep to maintain the vineyard), composting, minimal pesticide use, regeneration of the local Wakefield

River, vineyard mulching and the use of renewable energy.

Syrah and Viognier wines come from a most unlikely partnership of a red wine grape and a white wine grape and this blend first appeared in the Northern Rhône region of France (Côte Rôtie par exemple) and subsequently spread to the new world.

THis wine has 92 per cent Syrah and just 8 per cent Viognier, which lifts the perfume and enlivens the colour of the wine.

INGREDIENTS • 2x 125g skinless cod fillets • 1 lime, zested and juiced • 1 small mango, peeled, stoned and chopped (or 2 peaches, stoned and chopped) • 1 small avocado, stoned, peeled and sliced • ¼ cucumber, chopped • 160g cherry tomatoes, quartered • 1 red chili, deseeded and chopped • 2 spring onions, sliced • Handful chopped coriander

Well, it is enticingly priced and has ripe fruits with a delightfully soft and smooth feel. It has an intense aroma of lifted spice and dark blood plums with hints of vanilla and cherries dipped in dark chocolate.

THis medium-bodied wine is juicy in texture on the palate and plum and blackberry flavours abound and is decidedly a great food wine to be paired with either pizza, a barbecued steak or even a curry - a wine too good to ignore!

Bravo, Aldi!

1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put the fish in a shallow ovenproof dish and pour over half the lime juice, with a little of the zest, then grind over some black pepper. Bake for 8 mins or until the fish flakes easily but is still

moist.

2. Meanwhile, put the rest of the ingredients, plus the remaining lime juice and zest, in a bowl and combine well. Spoon onto plates and top with the cod, spooning over any juices in the dish.

INGREDIENTS • 3 oranges • 2 pears, peeled and cored

Fresh orange lollies

Method 1. Finely grate ¼ tsp zest from one of the oranges, then peel them, roughly chop the flesh and put in a bowl (or food processor) with the zest and pears.

A glorious summer lunch at the historic Inglenook Hotel in Pagham Delicious ingredients and beautiful surroundings make for an unbeatable combination, writes Daniel Field WHAT better way to lunch on a hot July day than at the quintessentially English Inglenook Hotel? Certainly none that I could think of.

My companion and I were privileged to eat at the 16th century Tudor hotel in Pagham, which has been in the capable hands of the Honour family for over 35 years.

We sat in the garden, resplendent with summer flowers, and manicured lawns, with birds singing and fellow diners also enjoying a leisurely lunch time meal.

Renate, our charming waiter, presented us with a comprehensive wine list. We opted for the Australian Chardonnay, chilled and refreshing, with tropical flavours of pineapple, pears and melon, suited to most

dishes and light enough for the occasion and the weather.

We particularly wanted to sample the chef’s two-course lunchtime menu, at £15.50 per person, which is available from 12pm-2.15pm Monday to Saturday.

Christian Williamson, although relatively new to THe Inglenook, has been a chef for over 20 years.

He explained that the menu is changed daily to suit the availability of local ingredients, which means there is always variety and the chance to try the best local produce in terms of freshly caught fish, seasonal vegetables and even cheeses.

THis means that the menu always reflects the very best of what is in season on the day.

With four choices of starter and four mains, the lunch menu has something to suit everyone. My companion opted for the studded Brie to start, followed by the Fish of the Day, and I the crab tower and traditional favourite cottage pie.

THe hot Brie arrived adorned with aromatic herbs, served with crusty bread and salad, and a bitter sweet onion marmalade.

My crab tower was a perfect portion of succulent Selsey crab in mayonnaise presented in a delicate vierge sauce - olive oil and lemon juice suffused with herbs, which complemented the delicately flavoured crab without overwhelming it, served on crunchy piquant pickled cucumbers.

THe quality continued with the main course, the fish of the day being sea bass, just caught that morning, and cooked to perfection, beautifully presented with crushed new potatoes and citrus hollandaise.

My home-made cottage pie was equally enjoyable, a classic favourite - a flavoursome minced meat base topped with crispy golden potato. We both enjoyed

the vegetables accompanying the meal, a rainbow of yellow and green courgettes, green beans, whole baby corns and leeks, steamed to retain their freshness and firm texture.

Christian explained that his lunchtime menu can change daily, to enable him to offer the best and freshest local ingredients.

He has plans afoot for introducing a brand new A la Carte menu soon, which will still feature much loved classics.

But he will also be looking at introducing some brand new dishes, using lesser known ingredients for the more adventurous diner.

It is easy to see why the Inglenook is so well acclaimed throughout the local area, offering as it does outstanding food and service.

THe restaurant is a delight, and does credit to the owners, who we were also privileged to meet.

We will certainly be returning, and thoroughly recommend it for high quality, superbly cooked fresh food, in a stunning historic setting, suitable for couples, families, friends or colleagues.

I used to be a massage therapist on board a luxury yacht, (many moons ago) so for me getting a massage is a real treat, but can be a little frustrating if not quite up to standard! After our wonderful massage, we chilled by the pool with a glass of bubbles, and as if that wasn’t enough fabulousness for one day, we then sat in the sunshine with our delicate, beautifully crafted sandwich and cake selection afternoon tea.

THey can often start at puberty and affect those aged between 35 and 45 years, but it can trouble much younger people, including children.

Migraine is ranked globally as the seventh most disabling disease among all diseases (responsible for 2.9 per cent of all years of life lost to disability/YLDs) and the leading cause of disability among all neurological disorders and it is estimated the UK population loses 25 million days from work or school each year because of it.

In the UK, migraines cost the NHS £150 million per year, mostly from the costs of prescription drugs and GP visits. THe NHS expenditure on all headache disorders is estimated at £250 million per year.

Having said that, migraine is, surprisingly,the least publicly funded of all neurological illnesses relative to its economic impact.

If you have suffered from migraine attacks for a long time, the best thing you can do is clean your

diet up. Eat as much alkalising foods (fresh fruit and vegetables in abundance) daily and try to nourish your body as much as you possibly can with whole-foods.

Community News & Views MP NICK GIBB has shown his support in Parliament for this year's summer reading challenge.

He attended the event last week to discuss the scheme he is running in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton constituency to encourage children to join in the challenge.

His Read to Succeed scheme is aimed at ensuring every Year 4 child in the constituency receives a free book to enjoy and keep to help to inspire them to become regular readers.

Mr Gibb said: "Learning to read independently is one of the most important things a child can do to set them up for later life.

"I am launching Read to Succeed across Bognor Regis and Littlehampton to help further improve the reading fluency of local children over the summer holidays.

"Schools do a wonderful job reading with children but it is important that children keep this up over the long summer break.

"Here, in West Sussex,we have an excellent library service and one of the highest participation numbers of the library summer reading challenge in the country.

"I am very pleased to be working in participation with Russell Allen, the team manager of children's services at West Sussex County Council, on this new scheme to encourage children to read at home."

Year 4 was chosen because it is the age, eight to nine-yearsold, when many children start to read independently. Mr Gibb was inspired by his fellow MP, Steve Barclay's similar scheme.

Books which Mr Gibb has put on his wishlist include Enid Blyton's The Magic Faraway Tree, Gangsta Granny by David Williams and Terry Prachett's Dragons at Crumbling Castle.

Generous donations of books and prizes have already been received by Mr Gibb, who is the schools minister, from businesses such as Harbour Park, Barfoots of Botley and the Earl of March.

Each book includes a token for the child to take to their local library to sign up for the challenge. Prizes are on offer for those who take part.

GANDHI’S role in the hidden history of Bognor Regis could be recalled in a new town trail.

THe famous independence activist for India visited the town centre in October, 1931, to meet the then editor of the Manchester Guardian at his sister's house.

THe property has long since disappeared – and so has the memory of the special occasion. THat could change if a heritage trail initiative from the Bognor Regis Trust goes ahead.

Dozens of people went along to the first public event, pictured above, to promote the idea. One of those taking part was Post local historian and trust member Sylvia Endacott.

She has proposed 20 names for a new series of black and gold round plaques to remember those of interest.

She said: “We have some black and gold plaques in the town.

So, I thought we should continue with them and make the trail different from the standard blue plaques.”

A book she had written about the existing plaques had proved popular in acting as a guide to the past.

“People have walked around the town looking at the plaques and that’s how you learn about a place,” she said.

As well as Gandhi, other notable names on her list included geologist Martin Venables, see page 33, ‘the builder of Bognor’ William Tate and WE Butlin. THe plaques could be joined by trails related to gardens, buildings and places of interest. THey would be portrayed on an underground-style map to link them.

Bognor Regis Trust director Ken Blamires said: “We’ve had some interesting ideas proposed from the 30 or so people in the first 90 minutes. A lot of people want the trails, which is encouraging and there’s a lot of interesting places in the town which need to be promoted.”

Printed leaflets would be joined by QR codes for smart-phone users to learn about each plaque. THe first trail could be devised by next summer.

FLOWERS were to the fore in Felpham last weekend.

St Mary's Church contained beautiful floral displays for hundreds of visitors to admire and 13 gardens in the village were opened by their owners on Saturday and Sunday.

THose who took the chance to admire the gardening skills had the opportunity to look around sites as far apart as Burley Road and Goodwood Avenue.

THey ranged from plots divided into four zones - gravel garden, vegetable plot, raised beds and traditional allotment - to sub-tropical planting and a mature cottage garden.

THe church, above, contained five displays on the theme of Our Life THrough THe Church chosen by the vicar, the Rev John Challis, between last Friday and Sunday.

Flower festival organiser Caroline Stimpson said: "It's all about the role the church plays in a person's life, from being brought in as a babe in arms to be baptised, to being christened, married and then after they have passed away."

Sir, I have read the article in the local press about anti-bullying and the fact people would like a youth club in Bognor Regis.

We have been running the 39 Youth Club since February.

We have eight boys and two girls who come in every week.

We have a youth worker who has done indoor and outdoor cooking. THis week, we cooked pasta and there is a barbecue next week.

THe club is a drop in cafe, where the young people come and play pool, table football,

"THe ladies of the church have arranged the flowers.

You get to buy some beautiful flowers and it's a chance to get together for a chat.

"THis is about having a happy time. When you are in church for Christmas and Easter, it can be a sad time because you are remembering someone.

"But this is all about the flowers and enjoying them."

A total of 17 women arranged the displays around the five major occasions in a person's life - first visit, baptism, confirmation, wedding and funeral.

Blue, white and pink were the main colours used.

Roses, carnations, lilies, and chrysanthemums were among the flowers. THe church also hosted a popular concert led by its organist, James Rushman, with its choir.

Felpham Art Group's members, below, staged a display in the neighbouring St Mary's Centre. Proceeds from the weekend will go to the church and Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice.

SMART ticketing is one of the priorities of a new group set up to transform the south east's 'creaking' transport network.

THe ambitious partnership has been launched to combine 16 transport authorities and five local enterprise partnerships to work directly with the Department for Transport.

Transport for the South East will allow them to speak with a single voice and will also deal with road and rail builders, Highways England and Network Rail, transport operators, transport users and other key interest groups.

Integrated tickets to enable more seamless travel across a wide area is seen as an innovation which can make journeys easier for travellers and businesses.

East Sussex County Council leader Cllr Keith Glazier was elected as the first chairman of TfSE. He said: "THe south east is a major driver of the UK economy contributing over £200bn a year, more than Scotland and Wales combined. But its transport network is creaking so it's vital the government does not take its foot off the pedal in targeting much-needed investment in this area.

"Our transport network is nationally and internationally significant. It takes in two of the country's biggest airports, many of its busiest motorways, a string of major ports and crucial railway links to London, the rest of Britain and to mainland Europe. But there's no one body which directs this area network and that's the vitally important job that Transpore for the South East can fulfil."

THe area covered by TfSE has 7.5 million residents and more than 24,000 miles of road. Its ports collectively handle 81m tonnes of freight each year.

TfSe intends to secure full government backing and statutory powers within two years.

Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: "West Sussex is fully behind the concept of TfSE. "We must have a strong, unified voice representing our region to government about the transport needs of residents and businesses in such an important part of the UK. "We want to make sure authority over transport decisions affecting the south east is devolved effectively so communities and businesses here benefit to the fullest."

THe creation of regional transport bodies like TfSE, Transport for the North and Midlands Connect was enabled by law in 2016 as part of the government's devolution agenda.

SHOPPERS could help a Bognor Regis-based charity bag a share of a store's takings.

4Sight has been chosen as one of the three good causes to receive a grant from Tesco's Bags of Help initiative. THe community funding scheme sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 - all raised from the 5p levy - being awarded to community projects.

4Sight is on the three-strong shortlist for July and August. THe money it receives will go towards making more of the near 50,000 people in West Sussex predicted to have severe or partial sight loss by 2020 aware of its work. THis will be achieved by supporting 4Sight outreach workers for the Bognor Regis area to help people with sight loss, deliver low vision assessments, equipment demonstration days and make them aware of rehabilitation services and social support clubs.

Nik Demetriades, 4Sight's chief executive, pictured above, said: "As a local charity, which has been supporting visually impaired people for over 96 years, we're very grateful to Tesco Bags of Help for recognising the need to support our work, especially when the numbers of people with sight loss are ever increasing.

"We hope that Tesco customers will use this opportunity instore to help us to help all those people who have lost or are losing their sight - which can be a devastating time for that person and their family."

Martin's finds of the past inform the present Studies of an enthusiast continue to be used by those interested in the history of Bognor Regis WHEN talking about local history, different people look at the subject in diverse ways.

I principally have taken the arrival of Sir Richard Hotham as my start date. However, for many people, the time before the 1700s is extremely important.

THerefore, this week I thought I could take a look at the life and works of one particular man, for whom this period in time was of particular interest. I first met him when I joined the Bognor Regis Local History Society in 1979. His name is Martin Venables and he was nationally known as an amateur geologist and natural historian.

Born Edmond Martin Venables in 1901, in Sutton, Surrey, he was the youngest of three sisters and a brother. His parents moved to Bognor when he was a year old and lived at the ‘red house’ in a small cul-de-sac off Victoria Road. Eventually, in 1904, his father purchased, at a London auction, the house at No 3 Marine Parade for £1,320. He also bought the garden for £170 and the stable at the rear for a further £185. THis house overlooked the seashore, where Edmond remained until he was 33.

He became more widely known as Martin Venables, the self-taught geologist who was fascinated, from a young age, by the natural history of Sussex. Ultimately, Martin was to

produce in excess of 2,500 articles on natural history in the local press – I expect some of you are saying – oh yes! I can remember the Selbourne Notes, which he wrote for the West Sussex Gazette for over 50 years.

During his teenage years, his mentor was a local natural historian, namely Harry Guermonprez, who died in 1924, but to whom Martin became a protégé and this association was no doubt a great influence on many aspects of Martin’s life. Harry was a taxidermist but he also had a large collection of well over 100,000 specimens of natural history and some 2,000 books. With the influence of Harry Guermonprez and a copy of a book named Geology of Sussex printed in 1850, Martin soon realised his collection of fossils and his knowledge were well worth looking after.

By 1928 he was elected to the fellowship of the Geology Society, which paved the way for his first ‘paper’ on the London Clay of Bognor Regis, which described the foreshore area of the town which he had studied until that time.

He was still only 27 years of age.

In 1934, he married Alice May Portnall and together they worked on the area of the Aldwick Beds. THis is a group of strata which yielded a rich fossil assemblage of fauna and flora, including many new species and

genera. Among the genera are the fossil plant, Bognoria, another is named Aldwickia and a third genus Portnallia, named after his wife, because of her work for Palaeobotany. Martin also had a genus named after him, Venablesia, an anobid beetle. THe most outstanding aspect of his work was on the discovery of, at that time, the only known fossil insect fauna of the London Clay of 60 million years ago.

During the Second World War, Martin served as a Group Head and Civil Defence Training Officer. It was in 1943 that the home of the late Guermonprez suffered a near miss and it was here his collection had been housed since his death. He decided his collection should be re-housed. Also around this time, his collection was conditionally gifted to the town, which finally occurred in 1947 when temporary accommodation was found in an unused wing of Lyon Street School. THus Martin Venables became the curator of the newly establish Bognor Regis Museum, formed around the collection of his mentor Harry Guermonprez.

In 1969, Martin wrote another publication, this time with Mr AF Outen, called Building Stones of Old Bognor. THis detailed booklet was published by the Bognor Regis Natural Science Society and gave a very informative view of the materials used to build many of the town’s constructions. THis was perhaps my earliest piece of printed information on early Bognor, and this publication is still very much a reference document today. I am frequently asked where copies can be obtained.

In this publication there is a historical sketch of Bognor, which provides a viewpoint of information, some of which I shall quote here: 'It was not the availability of building

material that decided the site of Bognor as a settlement in Saxon times, but the relatively safe anchorage provided by the Bognor Rock Reef. Its earliest recorded mention is in a charter of AD680 when it was spelt Bucgan ora, implying Bucge’s ora, or bank; in this case a beach.' Further into this sketch he wrote, ‘gradually, in the manner of other villages, on this coast, Bognor was eroded by the sea.

Farmsteads, windmills and the chapel of St Bartholomew disappeared and by the early 1600s it was described as a hamlet'.

Martin was also a self-taught artist - a skill that was to prove extremely useful when he was recording his finds along the coast.

However, it went wider than that and all the people who were lucky enough to receive one of his Christmas cards enjoyed his sketches.

Edmond Martin Venables died in 1990, leaving so much information for those who are interested in both natural history and geology. One such person is David Bone, who grew up knowing Martin and from whom he gained his enthusiasm. David continued much of Martin’s work and, during the Festival of Local History in June, 2003, he described the geology of South Bersted church to an eager crowd of more than 60 people. He also took part in the 2004 festival with a look at St THomas a'Becket Church in Pagham.

In 1981, Martin became the first honorary member of the Bognor Regis Local History Society in recognition of his valuable work within the area. His work is still used within the society when forming new and interesting displays on the history of the town. He left a lasting legacy of his work, which is invaluable to any historian within this area.

They value diversity and believe that everyone has a right to participate in and be part of their community. Fundraising is essential for the project to continue to provide support for adults with learning disabilities through sporting activities and leisure opportunities. They need assistance with researching funding opportunities, and writing effective funding bids.

Canal Restoration – Wey & Arun Canal Trust The Wey & Arun Canal Trust are restoring the Wey and Arun Canal, which runs between the River Wey at Shalford (near Guildford, Surrey) and the River Arun at Pallingham (near Pulborough, West Sussex). The trust is the 2nd largest canal society in the country and

is believed to have more volunteer working parties that any other society - a working party is active nearly every day of the year. Volunteers are needed for practical canal restoration and clearance work (construction skills such as bricklaying and carpentry are particularly useful).

Fundraising, administration, operating public boat trips on the restored canal, publicity and sales are all activities where volunteers are needed and useful. Although some skills may be helpful, no specific skills, other than enthusiasm for the task, are essential.

Rainbow, Brownie and Girl Guides Group Helpers – Girlguiding Bognor Regis West and South District Girlguiding UK, as part of a worldwide movement, enables girls and young women to fulfil their potential to take an active and responsible role in society through its distinctive, stimulating and enjoyable programme of activities delivered by trained volunteer leaders. Adults are needed to attend and help with Rainbow meetings (girls 5-7 years), Brownie meetings (girls 7-10 years) or Guide meetings (girls 10-14 years) on an occasional or regular

basis. You might help with setting up activities, tidying away, helping the girls to take part in activities, either in their regular meeting hall or on excursions. You will work under the supervision and leadership of the groups trained leaders and will benefit from all the opportunities guiding offers its adults, as well as feeling good about helping to deliver guiding to the girls.

My Guide – Guide Dogs The Guide Dogs charity provides guide dogs and rehabilitation services for blind and partially sighted people to enable them to make the best use of their mobility. My Guides are trained to guide partially sighted and blind people who are not able to have guide dogs.

They are carefully matched to help their My Guide partner gain the confidence to go into the outside world again and to experience a fuller life. Volunteers must be 18 years and over, be prepared to have a DBS check and be empathetic to the needs of others. Volunteers need to be able to give two to three hours per week on a flexible basis once partnered, plus two half days for training.

PostSport Lifters attempt to muscle in on Euro silverware at championships SOME of the region’s top power lifters have been testing their strength against the best in Europe.

Local competitors have been among the performers pushing themselves to the maximum at the WPC Powerlifting, Bench Press and Deadlift European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, which finish today.

Among the 'magnificent seven' from Legends Gym, based at the Durban Business Centre in Bognor Regis, who have qualified for the tournament, are Terry Short and Tom McMutrie who both achieved British records in qualifying to take part.

Both the lifters' nationwide bests for age and weight were achieved in competition in April with Short lifting 630kg in three lifts with British records in Squat at 225kg, Bench Press 140kg and Deadlift 265kg, while McMutrie achieved a British record of 665 kg from his three lifts as well as a Deadlift record of 277kg.

Also in April, fellow Legends lifter Mitchell Tutt hit the qualifying mark

with a total from three lifts of 672.5kg.

Two months earlier, in February, four club colleagues also made the required level with Luke Nash lifting 535kg in total, Andy Moyler 547.5kg, Jordan Gretton-Doidge 560kg and Aaron Bishop 620kg.

In achieving elite European standards, all seven will also fancy their chances at the British Championships of the British Powerlifting Union held in THornbury in September which will give competitors the chance to qualify for the 2018 European and World Championships.

Legends are encouraging anyone looking to follow in the footsteps of the 'magnificent seven' to get in touch for a friendly welcome and advice on the sport.

THe gym was founded in September by former Fitness First staff and boasts a 2,000 sq ft gym with more than 25 pieces of weightlifting equipment.

CHICHESTER Rugby Club’s season of rebuilding and new beginnings got underway this week.

Players were back in training on Tuesday after the summer break as they look to bounce back from last season’s relegation to London One South.

THey will have to do so without the inspirational Rob Lawrence who left the club in the summer after eight years’ service and an enviable two-thirds win percentage in his near 200 games at the centre of the club.

THe former Wasps player had been at the forefront of the club’s recent success as playercoach, head coach and rugby development officer since 2009 but left in the summer because of family commitments and in pursuit of new challenges.

After a difficult season last year, which included a points penalty deduction for fielding an ineligible player and ended in relegation from National THree London South East, the club will be confident of better days ahead as they play outside of the National League for the

first time since 2014.

Having been a force in London One South for a number of years before finally sealing promotion, the club will be considered one of the favourites for the title when the new season kicks off in September.

THey will be looking to press home that billing when they open the new season at home against Sevenoaks, mid-table finishers last time around, on September 2 before what is expected to be a stern test in Hampshire against Tottonians, a week later.

Another possible promotion rival, Havant, will also come calling in a challenging first month.

THere is likely to be little margin for error for Chichester if they want to bounce straight back up. Last year’s London One South winners, Sidcup, claimed the title after losing just once all season.

To get ready for that tough opening, the club have home friendlies against National South West One THornbury RFC on August 19 and National THree Guildford five days later.

CROQUET: THe West Wittering Croquet Club came close to regaining the Centenary Cup at Littlehampton which they won in 2014.

Ten Sussex clubs took part in the all day tournament but West Wittering were defeated by Littlehampton this year.

It was a good showing from the club, which meets most afternoons to play, as well as entering competitions both internally and against other clubs.

ATHLETICS: Middle distance runner Liam Dunne's fine season continues, with the Chichester Athletics club member getting regional recognition.

Dunne finished second when picked to represent Hampshire at the SouthEast Schools Inter-Counties event in Basingstoke, clocking a new personal best of 2:03:82 in the 800m. THis broke the club record of Ben Collins set in 2015.

Dunne has also booked a place in the Hampshire squad at the English Schools Championships at Birmingham in July.

Another loss leaves Middleton looking down table anxiously

Chi's bowlers shock leaders CHICHESTER A came within a whisker of turning the form book on its head with a battling one-shot loss to table-topping Worthing in the West Sussex Bowls Division 1.

Despite only one win all season, basement team Chichester came desperately close to upsetting the odds with a win at home on Saturday but their visitors eventually claimed eight of the ten points on offer.

THey will look to carry that good performance forward and wish for better luck as they prepare for a double header this Sunday and Monday when they host Worthing Pavilion A and then Crablands.

Bognor A bounced back well in the second half of their back-to-back fixtures.

THe team suffered a resounding 85-69 loss away at Norfolk A on Monday but found home comforts in beating Crablands 88-76 a day later to claim six points and pull away from their opponents into outright fifth

in the league standings.

Most of League 2 had the weekend off with just one fixture on the list.

But Pagham could enjoy putting their feet up after a good away win at Witterings last THursday to keep their 100 per cent start to the season going after seven games.

Bognor B will return to action more than a fortnight after their last fixture, a 91-72 loss at Arundel, when they try to become the first team to defeat Pagham on Monday.

Chichester B are in action today when they travel to Norfolk B in League 3.

It is expected to be a hardfought affair between the two separated by just one point in the league and who played out a thrilling 73-73 tie in the reverse fixture just a fortnight ago.

Meanwhile, Middleton will be hoping for better fortune when they travel to Petworth on Saturday.

In their last outing on June 14 they lost 81-76 to East Preston.

MIDDLETON'S slide has continued with a thumping defeat to their rivals.

When does a slump in form become something more serious?

THat is what will be on Middleton CC players’ minds after a fifth defeat in six against fellow strugglers Brighton and Hove on Saturday.

A seven-wicket loss has left the club looking anxiously down at the two relegation places below them rather than up the table.

THey were quickly in trouble after being put into bat, with three quick wickets from Brighton and Hove opening bowler Chris Mates, including the prize scalp of last week’s century maker Angus Robson, leaving Middleton 7 for 3.

A quick-fire 47 from Patrick Colvin threatened to briefly wrest back control for the visitors, especially while a patient Nick Smith was at the other end, but Middleton finished on 96 all out in less than 30 overs.

It was never likely to be enough and, sure enough, home opener Liam Smith frustrated the Middleton bowlers in advancing to 50 as the home side cantered to a seven-wicket victory despite the best efforts of a six-man Middleton bowling attack which included wicket takers Matt Cooke (1-17) and Nick Smith (2-16).

Heartache for battling Pagham Ne

PAGHAM 2nd XI suffered final over heartache which saw them dumped out the Gray-Nicholls T20 cup in a two-wicket defeat.

In a tense finale at THree Bridges, the home side dragged themselves over the finish line with just three balls to spare.

Pagham had set a challenging 168-5 after being put in, built around strong consolidation from the middle order after losing openers Justin Scott and Gary Young cheaply.

Both Danny Berkley and David Leader hit powerful half-centuries which saw them smash 17 boundaries between them.

THree Bridges started strongly in pursuit, sitting pretty at 98-2, but Pagham’s attack kept chipping away with David Leader the stand-out performer (2-22) until a doughty 31-run eightwicket partnership saw the home side to the brink of victory and a place in the semi-finals.

Cup heartache was preceded by a gutsy 20-run league victory over Roffey 2nd XI a day earlier to keep Pagham in promotion contention.

A total of 148 was built around a patient 75 from Joe De La Fuente who then did his bit with the ball (3-30) in restricting the visitors.

However, the home side found some lower middle order resilience to reach 195 all out despite impressive bowling from Jones and Joe Ashmore (4-50).

Bognor started well in pursuit reaching 43 before losing six wickets for 58 until Jones (59) and Tom Woolnough (36) helped them to a share of the spoils and leaves them hanging to their hosts’ coat-tails in the survival battle.

Chichester Priory Park 1st XI eked out a onewicket victory in a low scoring top-of-Division 3 clash with Crawley Eagles.

All was going to plan after they put their hosts in and rattled through the top order before some late resistance. Chichester Priory Park stumbled in pursuit of 112 before Mike Smith (33) steadied the ship to secure a victory by the finest of margins.

THere were no nervous finishes for the 2nd XI in their Division 5 West basement battle with Goring. THey posted a formidable 219-9 dec thanks to contributions from top three Sean Dobbs, Will Parker and Jonathan Miller which the visitors never looked like getting, eventually slumping to a 65-run defeat.

THere was also success for Bognor Regis 2nd XI as they held their nerve for a two-wicket win over Broadwater. Bognor got out their visitors for 125. Richard Cox led the way with 5-43.

CHICHESTER City Youth FC under-12s are reaping the rewards of a year playing above their age range with a hat-trick of tournament victories.

THe team clinched the Sussex Cup as part of the Sports Tours UK national tournament after beating all-comers from across the country. It is the third tournament win for the team in recent months following earlier emphatic success at the SCI Youth tournament which the youngsters won without conceding a goal from open play.

THe under-12 tournament saw the team concede one solitary penalty in their eight game winning run which also saw them slot home 24 goals. Manager Chris Bullen credits the success to the learning curve the team went through last season as his team took on opposition a full

year older in an under-13 league.

Bullen said he wished to challenge his current crop of 'strong and talented' players by competing in the Top League Div A for under13s.

THe team took a little while to adapt to the increased physicality but grew in confidence and finished a very credible joint sixth.

A solid passing game was credited in adapting to the opposition’s greater physicality and the rewards could have been even greater if teams had not dropped out of the league, costing Chichester valuable points.

But now the real benefits are shining through from the season including the chance to meet former stars of the game like Steve Claridge and Darren Anderton.

Rocks' return to National League begins at Nye Camp Next Game

THE ROCKS' first game back in the National League and under the management of Sami El-Abd will be at home to Bath City a month tomorrow, it has been announced.

Bognor’s return to the non-league big time after eight years away will be testing opening affair at Nyewood Lane against a team who finished in the top ten of the Vanarama League One South last season.

In what is sure to be a frenetic and challenging start to the season with five games in 14 days, the Rocks can also be expected to face a severe test of their credentials at the higher level when they travel to Poole Town for their first away game just three days after their opener.

Old Sussex rivalries will also be renewed early in the season when Bognor host Whitehawk, one of the manager’s former clubs, in their second home game of the season on Tuesday, August 15.

County hostilities will be renewed just after the new year when the Rocks travel to the Enclosed Ground in Brighton on January 6.

Fellow Sussex rivals Eastbourne Borough, and that reunion with former boss Jamie Howell, will also come calling in the first month of the season which will be so crucial to setting the tone for the Rocks’ season.

THe Rocks will travel to their fellow resort town for the return fixture in the final month of the season in April.

Should Bognor fans dare to dream they may wish to book the first two weeks of May off work with the play-off qualifying round, semi-final and final held between May 2 and May 12.

So far there has been little transfer news coming from the club since the well-received announcement of resolute defender El-Abd at the end of last month after a seven-week recruitment process.

THe Post understands that work is going on behind the scenes and the club hope to make some announcements in the next week or so as pre-season really begins to kick in.

In a great gesture to young fans wanting to soak up some National League action this upcoming season, the supporters’ club has announced that free season tickets are available to all under-16s from the supporters’ club shop at any game.

Adult terrace admission prices for the forthcoming season have been increased to £12 to take account of the club's higher operating costs and the fact there are two less home fixtures than in the Ryman League.

THe club say the new price is still below the average charged by their new rivals. But a reduced entry charge of £10 for senior citizens has been re-introduced.

Under-18s and students with ID can gain entry for £5. Prices for seats are £13 for adults and £11 for senior citizens.

Worthing good test for Rocks A NEW season beckons for the Rocks just 68 days after their memorable play-off victory against Dulwich Hamlet.

THe club are back in action tomorrow as preparations for the new season hot-up.

Bognor will travel to Woodside Road to play Worthing as they begin preparation for life in the National League.

THe fixture will be one of four July preseason friendlies ahead of the big kick-off next month. Chichester City, Crawley Town, one of new boss Sami El-Abd’s former clubs, and Gosport Borough are all to come as the club look to build up player fitness and bed in new signings.

THe game against THe Mackerel Men will offer an instant reunion with former star James Fraser who made the switch to Worthing in the close season for personal reasons.

THe Rocks will hope to keep their former man, who top-scored with 23 goals in last year’s successful promotion push earning him a team of the year nomination, quiet and look to have his replacement in action soon.

Worthing struggled in the Isthmian Premier last season, finishing just four points but eight places above the relegation zone and 36 points shy of the runaway Rocks.

THe Vanarama signs are up at Nyewood Lane, the Rocks have chosen a new manager and training is well underway.

To kick off the new campaign, the Post's columnist Liam Goodley returns, with first-team player James Crane, to provide their insights about life on and off the pitch in the National League South.

ANOTHER season beckons at Nyewood Lane.

After all of the success from last season, and with Jamie Howell leaving to manage Eastbourne Borough, we needed a new boss.

News finally came through that it was Sami El-Abd chosen to take up the role as the manager alongside Gary Charman and coach Darin Kilpatrick.

I am now confident we can make a real go of it in the National League South this season. It is my understanding that Sami will continue playing as well and I think, given his speech at the end of season players' night, he has been learning lots from the staff last season - so it seems like a good choice.

It would be great to find out who else was interested in taking on the task of keeping the Rocks in the National League South though!

I am sure with Jack Pearce behind the scenes we will have a great structure in place again next season both on and off the field.

Time will tell if Sami is ready for this, but it is clear he has all of the fans' support, including mine.

I think everyone will agree that staying up in this league is the aim but with the new play-off system, you just never know. We could get into seventh place and go through it all over again. THough, I admit I am an optimistic Rocks fan!

It was a shame that the

Portsmouth friendly had to be cancelled. But I understand why.

Playing a ‘Pompey XI’ would not attract the same amount of fans as the regular Portsmouth side. Under new ownership, I hope that the Blues will think differently next season and field a strong team in a friendly during preseason at the Lane.

Personally, I am looking forward to the Crawley Town fixture. We really gave them a run for their money in the Sussex Senior Cup semi-final last season and there’s no reason why we can’t do that again.

News of player departures soon followed the end of the season, as James Fraser and Darren Budd left us.

James was immense last season and I feel it will be hard to replace the goals he put away.

Buddy didn’t get perhaps as much game time as he would have liked but he did well when he played. Good luck to both on their futures!

At the time of writing this, players confirmed so far as staying I believe are James Crane, Doug Tuck, Jimmy Muitt, Gary Charman, Sami El-Abd and the signing of Corey Heath from Worthing.

My worry is that we’ll need a goalkeeper as I can see Dan Lincoln getting snapped up!

He was terrific last year and well deserving of his player of the season award.

THose are big gloves to fill if we need a replacement.

I will see everyone at Woodside Road tomorrow as Rocks take on their old rivals, the Rebels, in pre-season friendly action.

I am sure it's going to be another fascinating year of football.

I am bored of the summer already - and it's time for some more Rocks on Tour travel!
