SAJID Javid has given the go-ahead for the scheme to stop Pagham from flooding.

Model pupils help church

COLOUR bingo and a cool clothes day were among the ways Rose Green pupils helped a church.

THe imaginative ideas enabled the children at Rose Green Junior School to meet their challenge to raise £300 for new tiles for St THomas a'Becket Church.

THe church's vicar, the Rev Mark Eminson, took along the model of the building he used in the last Pagham Pram Race when he was presented with the cheque, pictured above, with some of the children.

It has been put towards the church's £250,000 Raise the Roof appeal to buy new tiles to replace the present worn-out roof covering.

THe donations for each roof tile are going to be recorded in a book of memories at the church.

Julie Holloway, the school's headteacher, said: "It will be nice for the children to bring their children to the church and find the record of their class donating the tiles for the Raise the Roof project."

THe children visit the 12th century church - in Church Lane in Pagham - in Year One Religious Education curriculum and the Year Two children take part in a Christmas carol service each December.

THis link prompted their teachers to challenge each class to raise enough money for three of the tiles at £10 each.

THeir ideas also included a sponsored run, a games afternoon and a tea party.

THe tile-buying initiative followed a

similar project last year where each class thought of their own way to raise money to buy a goat for a family in a THird World country.

THe children learned about the difference owning a goat would make to the families. THis inspired them to think of great ways to fundraise.

Particularly popular was finding out how the goat manure would help the families to grow crops.

THe information spurred them to make enough money for 31 goats to take them well past their original target of ten of the animals.

More fundraising schemes will take place at the Hawkins Close school after the children have been prompted to think of how to make as much money as possible for various good causes.

Deputy headteacher Caroline Sugden said: "THis has given the children more ownership of the fundraising projects.

"THe children have been really inspired and motivated due to the fact they have a clear idea of what they are fundraising for and a clear purpose to it."

All the children at the school have a voice and are part of the school council.

Each class has a class council which discusses school projects.

A 'Linking Voice' from those meetings reports back to Mrs Sugden in fortnightly 'Linking Voice' meetings.

THe church's next appeal event will be its summer fair from midday-3pm on July 15 at Pagham Village Hall. A dog show will take place from 1pm-3pm.

Golf course could open this autumn to provide park boost

ADVENTURE golfers could tee off on a new Bognor Regis course this autumn.

ISS Landscape is set to open its new 18-hole obstacle attraction in Hotham Park in about four months.

THe company is spending nearly £450,000 to replace the current crazy golf and pitch and putt courses with the new landmark feature.

Regional director Mark Hogan told councillors on Monday the firm wanted the project to be in keeping with the park and reflected the park's heritage of a zoo and plant collections.

"We believe our scheme enhances what exists in the park and will attract

more people to Bognor Regis and into Hotham Park to use the wide range of facilities already there," he said.

THe new course will contain a waterfall and animals sculpted from concrete. "We didn't want to put pirates in there," he said.

He hoped Arun District Council would approve the plans by July 12. It would take 12-14 weeks to build. Efforts would be made to avoid clashes with existing events.

Fifteen extra parking spaces and a kiosk also form part of the plans.

Councillors called for the kiosk to sell basic refreshments to the course users.

Residents' protests about housing should be heeded

Church founder Michael cleared

LESSONS needed to be learnt from a fatal fire to stop a planning disaster around Bognor Regis, a meeting was told.

Hugh Coster, deputy chairman of the town's civic society, said the terrible tragedy of the blaze which destroyed Grenfell Tower showed the outcome when people's concerns were ignored.

Flooding worries about the proposed 3,000 homes for Barnham/Eastergate/ Westergate had been ignored for several years. But the effect of the development could be to worsen flooding in the coastal area between the South Downs and the sea after heavy rainfall.

He told a meeting held by the Campaign to Protect Rural England's Sussex section: “Nobody is taking any notice. Nobody is listening.

“What Grenfell Tower has highlighted is what we all know is a major problem

– which is that nobody listens. Councils don't listen, governments don't listen.

THey all go their own sweet way.

“I hesitate to use this tragedy but it simply highlights what has been happening for years, and which everyone knows, the authorities don't listen. Now is the time.

THey have got to listen to all of us.”

Mr Coster was among the speakers at the meeting held last Friday which packed the main hall at Barnham Community Hall.

Some 150 people, pictured above, listened to a range of protests about Arun District Council's proposed local plan.

THis is due to be examined by a planning inspector this autumn. It calls for 20,000 homes to be built during the document's 20 year span of 2011-2031.

Some 2,500 of these are earmarked for North Bersted and 1,200 for three locations in Pagham.

But Dr Roger Smith, a trustee of CPRE Sussex, said he believed the local plan was flawed. “THe local plan does not acknowledge that there is considerable uncertainty about the economy and, therefore, considerable uncertainty about the housing market and,therefore, housing development,” he said.

THe objectively assessed need, which was used by Arun to determine its housing numbers, was decided by consultants. But it was a guess and a forecast rather than a scientific analysis, said Dr Smith.

PAGAM member Alan Pivett said all the local councils around Arun had to be united against the proposed homes.

“You have to do this collectively. We call upon the parish councils to get together and the sooner the better. We seem to be seeing some dithering going on. You can't do this. You will run out of time,” he said.

Regeneration plans begin to take shape - see page 5

BIGLOVE founder Michael Johnson is to review the future of the Bognor Regis church after his acquittal for alleged fraud.

Mr Johnson, pictured above centre, was cleared by a jury within 90 minutes last Friday after a five-day trial at Portsmouth Crown Court. His son was also cleared of fraud and another charge of money laundering.

Mr Johnson, the church's pastor, said: "We cried our eyes out in the court after the jury's verdict was announced. It's like we have started a new season of healing and forgiveness. I'm praying for direction and I'm praying for healing.

"I need to think about the church in Bognor Regis. We've got projects in Nigeria and a church in Ukraine. So, there's plenty going on."

He said the conviction last February of a paedophile who raped him four times a week from the ages of 8-12 had also cleared his mind.

"While all this had been going on, my head was filled with a lot of negative thoughts," he said. "It made me depressed and brought back my posttraumatic stress disorder. I'm now at total peace."

Mr Johnson, 51, began BigLove in 2007. He found God after a life as an armed robber, drug addict and living rough.

His brand of Christianity saw him

help 100 people a week with donations of food as well as advice.

But that number slumped to just two a month after he was charged with fraud. THe size of the congregation at his weekly Sunday service also dropped from 45-55 people to eight.

"I'll be forever grateful to the friends who stood by us but 99 per cent of people dropped us like a hot potato.

"Donations in the bank waiting for clearance were withdrawn. Donations which were planned for last year and this year were never given," he said.

Mr Johnson blamed the situation on a former congregation member. He says the individual came to BigLove after being involved with drugs.

But it became obvious that, with another church member, he was continuing with the crime.

Mr Johnson bluntly told him to leave the church but the individual complained to police a threat had been made to kill him.

Police officers quickly dropped the case but Mr Johnson had allowed his bank account to be used by the individual to deposit £11,000.

He told the court the individual used this against him when Mr Johnson refused to give him an alibi for his drug dealing. He was charged in 2015 with the alleged offence and kept on police bail until the trial started last Monday.

` Coach park rethink A RETHINK has started about the future of the Bognor Regis coach park.

Arun District Council is beginning to reconsider the long-term options for the London Road site.

THe situation was revealed by the council's group head of economy, Denise Vines, to councillors on Monday.

She said a six-month exclusive deal Arun had agreed with the University of Chichester last November to see if it wanted to develop the land for student flats had lapsed.

"Quite recently, the university have withdrawn from the lock-out agreement. THere could still be development options there," she told Arun's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee.

"THe council will be considering its options about what to do with that site in the future."

Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W), chairman of the sub-committee, said: "THere are various opportunities available to us on that site.

"We could look at building student accommodation on it ourselves."

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said he wanted the matter to be placed on the agenda for the sub-committee's meeting in October.

"THis gives us the chance to see how the council wishes to move forward on that site in terms of improving parking facilities.

"We should either improve it as a car park or, if it's going to be built on, how we can deliver that."

THe coach and lorry parking area is also occasionally illegally used by travellers. It is next to a car park with 104 spaces.

Call for PCSOs to be brought back RENEWED calls for police community support officers to be restored have been made by Bognor Regis area councillors.

THey called for the policing assistants to be brought back on to the streets to patrol their designated areas.

THe PCSOs were removed late last year in a reorganisation by Sussex Police to redeploy its staff in keeping with its reduced budget. THey have been given new skills but taken away from specific communities.

But county councillor Francis Oppler (LD, Bognor Regis E) said: "THe PCSOs were the police's eyes and ears on the ground. THey had a relationship with their residents. I know from personal experience because the PCSO in my area, Julie Jones, was absolutely fantastic.

"It's a sad loss to the community we no longer have them.

"THe good they might do now is outweighed by the fabulous job they did previously.

"I have spoken to many friends and acquaintances across the wider Bognor Regis area and they miss the PCSOs." Cllr Lilian Richardson, the chairman of Aldwick Parish Council, said: "When I speak to parishioners, they don't say they are glad they don't see PCSOs. "THey say they appreciate when they had them."

Pagham Parish Council's chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said the PCSO for Pagham and Aldwick, Bill Prior, spent a lot of time on Pagham Spit where he worked hard to disrupt alleged drug dealing.

But he had evidence that the illegal activity had restarted.

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey), of Arun District Council, said: "We do miss our PCSOs locally."

But he praised the police response within four minutes after he reported a recent incident on 999.

THe councillors made their comments at Wednesday's meeting of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee of county, district and parish councillors.

Inspector Marc Clothier, of Sussex Police, told the committee the PCSOs' previous role had to alter because of the need to change policing to take account of the current available finances.

"We have to police with the resources that are available. We had a luxury service for a number of years.

"We are in a different place now with a massive reduction in our budget. We have to do things differently and it's a case of getting used to that.

"People should report any suspected crimes to us.

"We can make decisions and we can make those on what we think is important. An incident may not be as significant as a situation somewhere else," he said.

Insp Clothier detailed some of the successes which the police had achieved in the Bognor Regis area.

THey included disrupting drug dealers and protecting vulnerable people who were at risk from that activity.

Individuals had also been targeted and put into custody as a result of that activity. Partnership working with Arun District Council was also getting results in tackling anti-social behaviour, he said.

Pier enthusiasts continue talks with owner of historic structure REGULAR links have been kept between supporters of Bognor Regis Pier and its owner.

THe officers of the former Bognor Pier Trust continue to work behind the scenes to ensure the future of the seafront landmark is not forgotten. THe trust has been renamed as the Bognor Regis Trust to broaden the work it carries out. But the pier remains a focus of its activities.

Trust chairman Paul Wells said: "Following the announcement last October by Bognor Regis Pier Leisure Ltd not to pursue the lottery bid route with Bognor Pier Trust, the trust has been maintaining a relationship with the owner (John Ayers) who is undertaking the work

he announced last October."

THe trust has attended Heritage Lottery Fund workshops on the impact of funding on communities and completed a plan to look at community initiatives for the next three to five years.

It has recently held a photographic competition which attracted a large number of entries. THe winners have seen their shots turned into postcards and distributed around the town.

"THe trust has maintained its relationship with all local authorities as a positive voice for Bognor Regis. We are currently involved in delivering a new heritage trail for Bognor Regis. It is planned to feature the pier within the trail," said Mr Wells.

Detailed regeneration plans for new park to be drawn up

DETAILED plans are being compiled for a new park in Bognor Regis.

Experts have been hired to put together the proposals for the Hothamton linear park. THe open air green space comprises a key part of Arun District Council's regeneration proposals for the 215-space Hothamton car park off Queensway.

Denise Vine, Arun's group head of economy, said: "We are about to employ consultants to work with us to take forward the proposals for the linear park.

"THey will be working up detailed design proposals for the park and work on a delivery approach for the redevelopment of that site. It will be the first thing (of the regeneration scheme) to come forward."

Examples she gave included meetings with Whitbread, which leases the Regis Centre site from Arun, about the intention to include an hotel in the initial scheme and with Arun Arts. THe charity sub-leases the centre from Whitbread and is set to run the new, expanded 450-seat theatre put forward among the intended winter gardens main attraction.

Talks had also taken place with Bognor Regis Town Council about the town hall in which it leases rooms from Arun as well as the NHS over the town health centre.

Meetings would be held as well with supporters of other projects to see if they could become involved.

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said: "It's clear a lot of discussions are going on behind the scenes. It would be good to have a timetable at our next meeting in October of what we are aiming for. For the residents of Bognor Regis, regeneration has become a bit of a standing joke."

Sub-committee chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins said other ideas could be welcomed but warned the council would not scrap its plans: "We have a brilliant plan which is getting well known and has a lot of support. THis is what happens in Bognor Regis. We do one thing and then it starts again and then again."

But the closeness of Pagham Harbour nature reserve and the presence of protected species required an exacting set of laws to be met. THis includes strict limits on when the work can take place to avoid the birds' breeding season and the arrival of over-wintering species.

Mr Javid's senior planning casework officer, Mike Hale, said in his report: "THe project will provide larger and longer-term coastal defence benefits for the Pagham Beach foreshore that are urgently required and essential for public safety. THe improved public access, safety, amenity and community engagement values provided will in turn result in human health benefits to the community.

"THere will also be gains for the environment. THe secretary of state is satisfied that there is a strong case for the development to proceed..."

His verdict enabled Arun to issue the formal planning permission.

Council planning officer Simon Davis states in his report: "A range of mitigation measures, including fencing and wardening, will be implemented to reduce the disturbance impact during (the) operation to insignificant."

A new island from the excavated shingle is to be created in Pagham Harbour for little terns who will be displaced when the channel is created in the spit.

A total of 263 letters in support of the scheme as well as five petitions with 1,347 names in all were received by Arun.

Callum's on right tracks JUNIOR railway modellers in Bognor Regis have created a train set to keep young people safe.

THe young members of the town's model railway club put together the display with level crossings, fencing and electrified third rail to enable children to see the lethal dangers of playing on the network.

THe railway made its debut at Rose Green Junior School where pupil and model railway fan Callum Farthing, 11, pictured below left with fellow pupils, acted as its controller.

Pupils competed in teams to spot as many dangers as they could. THey included trespassing to misusing level crossings.

Headteacher Philip Craig said: "It's fantastic that the children have had this opportunity, not only to show their skills of building a complex railway layout, but to use it as a teaching tool to highlight the dangers of playing on or near railways.

"I am so pleased that the children have had this opportunity to learn about the risks associated

with the railway."

THe train layout will be used by Network Rail at schools around the south east.

Nicola Dooris, community safety manager for Network Rail, said: "THe project has been rewarding for me and the junior members, who have combined modelling and creativity with learning new skills.

"THey have brought a young person's perspective to the design of the layout which I am sure will add to its success in getting the message about safety around railways to primary school children. As the railway continues to get busier, we must continue to work even harder to keep young people safe by making them aware of the dangers that exist."

Stephen Nicolson, from Bognor Regis Model Railway Club, said: "THis was a really rewarding and fulfilling project which combined giving something to the community, using our creativity, and also providing a positive activity involving our younger members."

Service for a 'gentleman' A TRIBUTE has been paid to a Bognor Regis gentleman.

Peter Sharpe passed away aged 83 on June 18 at St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester. A thanksgiving service for his life will be held at 11.15am next THursday at South Bersted Church in Bersted Street.

Peter had been associated with the church since the age of ten. He was also widely known around Bognor Regis for his voluntary work with a range of organisations. THey included the town's foodbank, the Chaplain's team at the war memorial hospital and he was a volunteer at the local museum.

Not content with this, his service to the community also saw him become the treasurer of the National Osteoporisis Society's branch in the town and the Bognor Regis Horticultural Society.

THose extensive efforts saw him win the Mayor's Good Citizen Award in 2015 in an event organised by the town council.

Alan Readman, a friend of Peter's, said: "Peter was surprised by his award and will be remembered as a man of humility.

"When speaking of him, people invariably use the word 'gentleman'.

"Always smartly dressed, he was kind and courteous, and always had time for people. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends."

Peter was born in March, 1938. His father, Richard, was branch manager of the Yorkshire Insurance Company at its office in Central Buildings in London Road. THe family, including his older and surviving brother, Geoffrey, lived in Chichester Road.

Peter was educated at various small

private schools in the town. THey included St Olives in Victoria Drive and Colebrook School for Boys, then run by Dr HorsfallErtz, in Neville Road.

Leaving school at 16, Peter's first job was a junior clerk at Hall & Goulding, a firm in Shripney Road that made products in plastic coated wire. A clerical post with Littlehampton Urban District Council was next. He switched to a similar role in the county valuation office at County Hall in Chichester and then transferred to the county council's legal department where he spent the rest of his career.

To overcome his lack of educational qualifications, Peter began an ambitious and arduous programme of study.

THat period saw him become a chartered secretary, chartered insurer and chartered legal executive. He took a BA and a Bachelor of Laws at the Open University and achieved his goal of becoming a solicitor in October, 2013.

For good measure, he was awarded a BA in theology at the University of Gloucestershire in 2005.

Of his many interests and activities, his Christian faith and his church life were paramount. Around the age of ten, a chance meeting with the Rev Percy Harcourt Stidston, the Vicar of St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street, led to him joining the boys' choir.

He served on the parochial church council, fulfilled many offices and was a loyal member of the congregation.

Peter married at South Bersted in 1981.

He and his wife, Shirley, enjoyed 20 years of marriage before she died from cancer.

Peter took early retirement to care for her.

Cameras backed SECURITY cameras at McDonald's in North Bersted have been given planning approval.

Arun District Council planning officer Simon Davis says the CCTV camera and two automatic number plate recognition cameras already installed at the site should be permitted.

He states in his report: "THe poles and camera fixings are considered to be modest in size and of a functional design which is in character with the surrounding commercial site.

"It is not considered that the cameras/poles are in any way harmful and they do not have any impact on

the existing parking provision."

McDonald's Restaurant Ltd had applied for retrospective planning permission for the equipment at the site in Oldlands Way. Its planning agent, Donna Smith, stated at the time: "THe locations of the poles have been carefully selected to monitor cars entering and leaving the car park, and to avoid blind spots."

THe two recognition cameras were needed to stop motorists using the site for long-term parking, she added.

THey are mounted on a single pole, with another for the CCTV camera.

Both are 5m high and the cameras 4.5m above the ground.

THe new toilets are part of a seafront strategy backed by councillors last year.

THis included the prospect of moving the bandstand to Waterloo Square Garden.

But Mrs Vine said the proposal for the Grade II-listed structure was far from being put into effect.

"We are talking about options rather than saying it is going to happen," she said. "We need to look at how much it is going to cost. If it is very expensive, it will not happen. THere are no plans for it to happen at the moment and there is no budget for it."

Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said: "THere is a lot of concern from residents.

THis has clarified the situation and hope it gets the message out to residents there are no plans at the moment."

Sub-committee chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said he was angered by the protests staged by residents about the prospect of the bandstand's relocation.

NEW TOILETS are set to be opened on Bognor Regis seafront by next summer.

Senior Arun District Council officer Denise Vine said the permanent aboveground loos were planned for the next holiday season. But she said no funding existed to move the bandstand - a move which has prompted sizeable protests from residents living along the seafront.

Mrs Vine, Arun's group head of economy, told the council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee on Monday: "Officers are working on this at the moment with design ideas for new toilets. We are moving forward very quickly and will be having discussions with ward councillors."

As reported, temporary male and female toilets were installed by Arun on the seafront close to the foreshore officer early last month. THey are a short-term replacement for the underground sites Arun has closed because of vandalism and the high cost of maintenance.

Dancers raise funds for food

` Church breakfast FIONA Castle OBE will be talking about life, love, loss and beyond at a Bognor Regis church's first women's breakfast.

THe wife of the late entertainer and TV presenter, Roy, will be guest speaker at the initial Cherished event.

Doors open at 8.30am on July 8 at the Victoria Drive church.

A church spokesman said: "Fiona will talk openly and honestly about her life, her marriage to Roy, and how she coped with the unbearable news of his cancer, his subsequent death and her journey beyond.

"She will tell of her faith, the hope it brings and how it is possible against the odds to come safely through such tragedy, changed and even strengthened."

Rotary club's Gallic delight ROTARIANS from Bognor Regis have renewed their friendships with their counterparts in France.

THe 17 members of the town's Rotary club and their wives enjoyed their latest meeting with their French-based contact club at Challans/St Jean de Monts.

THis year's get-together was the turn of the English club to travel to Challans in western France.

Club spokesman Peter Stemp said: "After Friday night dinners in Rotarian houses on Saturday, we were taken to visit a chocolate factory with tasting, of course, and also to an equestrian centre.

"Sunday was filled with much socialising at a local village hall with the highlight being a paella cooked on a barbecue by one of their members who was a chef.

"It was not too difficult for him but we did total over 60."

THe entertaining, if tiring, weekend was followed by a few days of extra holiday in France by most of the members of the Rotary club.

Challans is a commune in the Vendee department in the Pays de la Loire region in western France.

It has about 18,000 residents and is 40kms from La Roche-sur-Yon, the capital of the department.

Bognor Regis Rotary Club will be present at the Felpham Village Conservation Society's summer fête on July 8 and the Drive THrough Time motor gala in West Park on July 15.

Its members recently took part in a joint cycle ride to help to beat polio in the world and staged a prostate cancer testing day in Bognor Regis.

POLE dancers are raising money to help provide meals for those in need in Bognor Regis.

Dozens of the dancers will be staging a fundraising show next week at the Bersted Park Community Centre in aid of the town's foodbank.

THe event will take place from 6-9pm on July 8. It is being held by Sue THompson of Passion Fitness.

She holds six classes in the coastal West Sussex area. One of Bognor Regis students, Marie Abbott, took part in an earlier event last December to raise money for the Love Your Hospital cause.

She said: "THe evening was great fun to be a part of as we got to show off our talents to our friends but also show beginners or potential new students what they can achieve."

As well as Bognor Regis, students of the Pole Passion classes in Littlehampton, Chichester, Angmering, Worthing and Shoreham will perform in next week's event.

It has been organised by the instructors across the six locations. Sue has been teaching in Bognor Regis for some six years and has increased her venues and class availability because of the high demand.

Next Saturday will give the students the chance to show their progress to their families and friends as well as helping a good cause.

Charity centre acknowledges special date with fun and plans for future CELEBRATIONS are in full swing at a Bognor Regis centre this week to mark the 60th anniversary of West Sussex Age UK. THe Laburnum Centre on Lyon Street held a successful barn dance and barbecue on Saturday and is set to continue the fun with cream teas and live music available this afternoon.

THe centre's manager, Gary Hardley, was impressed with the success of the barn dance and barbecue. He said: "It was really well attended. We had about 70-80 people there.

"Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves."

THe hard work of the centre's volunteers was also recognised as part of the celebrations. 70 of those who work there for free enjoyed a trip to Amberley Museum last THursday.

All this has accompanied their usual packed programme of varied classes and workshops.

For members, volunteers and workers the centre is an important part of their lives.

Its classes and facilities are available for those aged 50 years and give its 1,000 members a chance to pursue their hobbies with other enthusiasts as well as making new friends and even improving their fitness.

THe latter is a growing area at the centre as it now boasts an impressive gym and a range of active classes such as Pilates, line dancing, yoga, Fusion Fitness and indoor cricket.

THose running the courses enjoy seeing how members' fitness improves.

Sarah Smith organises the Fusion Fitness class. She said: "You've got to keep active.

'If you're moving, you're improving,' is what we say.

"It's nice to see everybody getting involved. Every week you can see improvements.

"For people with knee or hip operations it really helps their recovery times."

Member Hilary Jackson, 75, explained why she attends the class.

She said: "It keeps our brains and bodies working. THere's also great company. THe fitness classes helped me with my hip replacement."

Val Adams, 67, also attends the class for her health. "I came because I've got COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] and it's been excellent. It's social and fun, too," she said.

Part of the fitness facilities' popularity at the centre is due to the friendly and relaxed atmosphere they afford.

He said: "We encourage people to get involved. When people first come into a gym they can be very nervous. We like to put them at rest and keep it friendly.

Felpham resident Annie Gaad, 73, enjoys attending the gym for that reason.

She said: "I came here after my first knee replacement.

"I came here on crutches and was up and about after six weeks. It's a fantastic place.

It's nice to be with people of the same age, there's no pressure."

THere are also plenty of educational and artistic classes for members to get involved with, ranging from calligraphy to flower arranging.

Members of the digital photography group are able to feed their passion for photography among others with the same

interest.

Alec Noble, 78, who attends the classes, said: "We started this about five or six years ago. Once a month we go out on trips to take photographs.

"Here, the atmosphere is nice. THe people are really friendly."

THe team at the centre are also always looking ahead to the future.

Refurbishments have already begun on the site's popular hair salon. THe workers acknowledge that the update is taking its time due to the fact they did not want to close the salon at all.

Paul Catt, centre co-ordinator, said: "THe salon refurbishment is coming along bit by bit. THe manager, Gary, didn't want to shut the salon while the work is done as the ladies wouldn't be able to come in.

"Some people have been here a long time. THe centre is moving forward with things like improved equipment."

For hairdresser Carol Tyler, 69, the changes are exciting.

She said: "It's looking good. We provide all aspects of hairdressing here.

I've been here since the centre opened in 1990.

"We are all older hairdressers working with older people which we enjoy.

THere's so much variety with what we do as well."

Celebrations continue today at 1.30pm with cream teas and live music.

Residents call for creation of extra parking spaces FED-UP residents want parking areas outside their Rose Green homes to be extended.

THe neighbours in Pryors Lane said the current sites were too small to cope with the number of cars being owned by people in the area.

One of them, Jan Ribbons, said the situation had seen the grass verges at the road's northern end at its junction with Nyetimber Lane being damaged by parked vehicles.

"THis is a very busy part of the road because we have got the traffic going past on its way to Grove House Surgery, Willowhale Community Centre and Willowhale Library, as well as the buses on the 600 route.

"I know the rest of our estate has parking issues but this area is probably the busiest of the lot because we are the main route through," she said.

"As I'm talking now, there are three cars parked outside half on the grass and half

on the road. Down towards Nyetimber Lane, it looks like a parking lot. THere are usually four or five cars parked on that area of grass."

THe residents have approached West Sussex County Council to see if the problem could be solved.

THe two laybys in northern Pryors Lane could be increased or a grid placed over the verge to stop parked vehicles damaging the grass.

Mrs Ribbons has lived in Pryors Lane for 16 years. THe situation had worsened in that time because the parking areas she and her neighbours used had been taken away.

"When I moved in, we had parking bays and garages at the back of our homes where the Aldwick Parish Council offices are now," she said. THe space was taken up by the building.

"Our situation was very much like Valentines Gardens still is. But we do not have a road behind us like they do. We have just got a footpath."

Mrs Ribbons said tenants of Places for People, which owns much of the Willowhale estate, had the option of parking in the large car park behind the community centre and library.

But she added: "If we parked there overnight, and our cars were broken into, we would not be insured because it's a private car park and not on the public highway."

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “We have advised the residents to consider applying for a community highway scheme.

“Changes such as this will need to have support from the wider community and the local member, before being submitted for consideration.”

Applications for community schemes to be considered for action can be made via the council's website.

Harry's frank talking leads cancer fight YOUNG Bognor Regis cancer survivor Harry Lehane is fronting a campaign to highlight the hidden effect of the illness.

Harry Lehane is one of six young people from around the UK who have been picked

by CLIC Sargent to take part in a monthlong awareness drive for the charity.

It is highlighting how cancer affects the body image, self-care and mental health of young people.

Harry, 25, was photographed by celebrity photographer Richard Young and interviewed by BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey and spoke openly about the wider impact his diagnosis had on his life. He said: "I thought my toughest time came when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 20.

"I went through two bouts of surgery as well as intense chemotherapy.

"However, it was only a couple of weeks after I received the all-clear that I found myself falling into depression.

"THat was the beginning of a battle that was always on top of me, something I just couldn't shake off - no matter how much I tried to ignore it.

"I know that there are people you can go to but I was used to just being surrounded by support. It was a very difficult process to get used to."

Harry's experience is sadly typical. A

Hidden Costs report from CLIC Sargent shows 70 per cent of young people have experienced depression during their cancer treatment and 42 per cent have experienced panic attacks.

Harry was supported by CLIC Sargent through a social worker. He took part in the charity's music programme as a keen drummer and described it as one of the best experiences of his life.

Harry had a late diagnosis of testicular cancer just before he was about to go to university after he put off going to the doctor. After his diagnosis, the cancer spread to require further treatment.

"I had been struggling with the discomfort and enlargement and I knew something was up," he said, "but I think I just didn't want to face it.

"I was reading about what it could be and that really scared me."

Harry was successfully treated but CLIC Sargent chief executive Kate Lee said the charity knew the impact of cancer was far wider than just physical.

"Young people told us in no uncertain terms that cancer has had a devastating impact not only on their physical health but also on their mental health. We would like to see greater recognition of the impact of cancer on the mental health of those aged 25 and under," she said.

SUMMER fun is returning to Felpham next week.

Felpham Village Conservation Society's summer fête is being held for the third year.

Cakes and crafts, fun and games, music and more will be on offer from midday-5pm on July 8 in Old Rectory Gardens.

THe fête has plenty to offer the whole family. THere will be live bands from the entertainment tent and traditional games such as apple bobbing and football.

More than 50 businesses in the area will be taking part or sponsoring a stall or providing a raffle prize.

Felpham Parish Council has provided the money for a new marquee to be used.

MORE than £150,000 is to be spent improving temporary housing in Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council has agreed to sign a hire a contractor for the refurbishment at Howard House.

THe property in Pevensey Road provides 29 units for homeless people. It provides more than half the total of 56 properties which Arun uses for that purpose.

Approval for the work has been given by Arun cabinet member for residential services Cllr Trevor Bence. THe scheme - costing a total of £157,609 - will create selfcontained 1-3-bed flats to replace the current bedsits with bathrooms.

Nine contractors bid for the work.

Hard work of centre's clients is celebrated TEAM members of the Aldingbourne Country Centre had their hard work recognised during an action-packed week.

In celebration of National Learning Disability Week, additional activities were provided alongside their usual projects.

Tuesday saw its clients attend a day of cricket in Arundel at which they also provided live music as part of the access music programme.

To make the most of the scorching weather there was also a trip to the Arundel Lido on Wednesday.

For the organisers at the centre, this week was

about lauding the dedication of its clients including their work in wood recycling, furniture reconstruction, earth works, music, digital media, horticulture, as well as its farm, café and shop.

Enterprise and development team leader, Debbie Wells, was keen to thank the clients for their work.

She said: "THe Aldingbourne Trust supports about 500 adults with learning disabilities and we wanted to celebrate what they do.

"Without these people the trust couldn't be here.

"And the difference the centre makes to their lives is really important.

"We also want to raise awareness this week."

Other team members expressed their enjoyment for the projects at the centre.

their performance at the Arundel cricket day was received.

He said: "Everyone loved it.

"THe first thing we want people to do is to have fun. You can't learn without doing that."

Nick England, 25, from Bognor Regis works in the shop.

He said: "I like the people here.

And I really like interacting with the customers, especially the kids."

Pagham resident Laurel Lewis, aged 28, also enjoys her jobs at the centre.

She said: "I do the digital media class and work on the farm on a Wednesday.

"I love all of it, it's really good here."

Some members have been working on projects at Aldingbourne for a long time.

Forty-year-old Duncan Spandley from Bognor Regis has been attending the centre for 20 years.

During his time there he has raised money for the trust with various sponsored activities such as abseiling and even skydiving.

Duncan is looking forward to singing at an upcoming event.

He said: "Music is my favourite. I also do the horticulture and water the plants."

From July 24, the Aldingbourne Country Centre will begin its six weeks of summer events that will take place every weekday between 10am-4pm until August 31.

Pension failure angers women

by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 WOMEN'S pension campaigners in Bognor Regis have responded angrily to the lack of action from the new government to their concerns.

Last week's Queen's Speech, which set out the new government's programme for the next year, failed to mention the issue of help for the thousands of women in the area affected by their delayed state pension age.

Some of the worst affected women were given just 14 months' written notice of the increase in their pension age.

Jill Robertson, who founded the Bognor and Chichester South Coast branch of the Women Against State Pension Inequality, said the government had failed to listen to the concerns of the 3.5 million affected by their pension age going from 60 to 66 at short notice.

THe situation has cost some of them tens of thousands of pounds.

Jill said: "My situation will be greatly helped by some form of compensation to tide me and my husband over in our retirement which we have no had to adjust by downsizing to compensate for the loss of pension money.

"I originally expected it at 63 years and four months, this year, and now I have to wait until 65 years and nine months.

"We cannot have the lifelong dreams we held and are having to make do.

"When everything is crumbling around you and hard-earned savings are dwindling, it is a sorry state for people in their golden years."

As reported, the WASPI campaign has called

for action to resolve the issue arising from the lack of notice to 1950s born women about the changes to their state pension age.

THe WASPI general election campaign called on all candidates to pledge to work in Parliament to help the women affected by the changes. It secured the support of 480 candidates, of whom 190 were elected.

WASPI director Jane Cowley said: "In the runup to the general election, we were delighted that so many candidates pledged to work in parliament to find a solution.

"THis included a number of Conservative MPs who have pledged to support our campaign.

Since then, however, there has been no recognition from the government of the severe financial hardship faced by women across the country because of the mismanagement of changes to the state pension age.

"We have received support from all of the political parties. However, this is not enough.

"We need to take forward discussions on WASPI as a matter of urgency and have written to the secretary of state with a request to meet with us to discuss how we can achieve fairness and justice for all women, regardless of their background and financial situation."

WASPI Bognor and Chichester South Coast branch member Helen Downes, 62, said: "I am continually angered by the government's insistence on ignoring our plight.

"I was disappointed that nothing was included in the Queen's Speech about addressing our pension scandal. THis leads me to the conclusion that it has been thrown into the long grass along with most of the Tory manifesto."

Her pension age has increased twice - from 60 to 64.5 to 66.

Cadets' help CADETS around Bognor Regis have benefited from the support of the former town mayor.

Cllr Pat Dillon has presented cheques from the money raised through his year in office to his chosen mayor's charities.

Lt (SCC) Gary Edgington MBE RNR, Sea Cadets chairman Raymond Rowe, along with past mayor’s Sea Cadet OC Ryan Birch and current mayor’s Cadet Jack Golding, were present to represent and collect on behalf of the organisation, pictured above.

Flight Lieutenant Mal Penberthy was present to collect the cheque for the 2351 (Bognor Regis) Squadron Air Training Corps, pictured right.

THe representatives were delighted with the contributions and thanked Cllr Dillon for his efforts. He raised more than

£1,200 in total and split the amount between the cadet forces across the town.

Cllr Dillon made his support for the young people's organisations a key pledge after he was chosen as the town's mayor last May.

LEADERS of some of Bognor Regis' best loved community initiatives came together to share inspiration.

THe ideas clinic was part of a series of events designed to explore the options for the support programme at the creative digital hub set to open at the town's railway station.

THe hub will provide a collaborative work and event space where creative people and businesses can be inspired by each other and build on their successes while helping others.

Wired Sussex managing director Phil Jones said to the group: "We are very excited about what the hub can offer the creative community. If you are successful, you can inspire others to do great things in the town."

About 20 people took part in the ideas clinic at the University of Chichester's campus in Bognor Regis.

Among them was Bognorphenia founder Kez Bridger. She said: "It was very informative and I left feeling more focused and able to re-evaluate Bognorphenia in certain areas.

"I'd like to see the hub continue to provide these sessions, as many can really benefit from them and the advisors were great."

Other organisations which took part included Rox, Strohacker Design School, Screen Plug pop-up film festival and THe Big Blake Project.

THe advisors also included the Arts Council's Peter Davison and Gareth Sear, of the University of Chichester.

Successes in biology f Pupils at the workshop

Amanda teaches how to overcome

OVERCOMING adversity was a lesson in life given to Felpham Community College students.

Disabled Amanda Worne led a motivational workshop for selected students in Years 8 and 9 about how to make the most of their abilities.

As reported, Yapton resident Amanda broke her back in a cycling accident on Bury Hill in 2015. Now in a wheelchair, she has overcome her disability with her can-do attitude.

College careers co-ordinator Amanda Woodman said: "Amanda spoke about how nothing should hold you back, anyone can overcome adversity and everyone should set targets for themselves."

Year 9 student Madison Wood-Field said: "Amanda was really inspiring. She has continued her life as if she does not have a disability.

"She still plays a wide variety of sport, including horse riding and cycling, using an adapted bike for her hands instead of her feet."

Brooklyn Santer-Smith, of Year 8, said: "Amanda has completed brilliant, and challenging, life experiences like a sky dive. She has made us realise that, whatever life throws at you, you don't need to cancel your goals. You can adapt them and achieve what you want."

Amanda's house was recently transformed by hit TV show DIY SOS: The Big Build.

Two of the pupils, Edward Reeder and Jenson Barker, received silver awards in this year's challenge set by the Royal Society of Biology. THis puts them in the top ten per cent of UK students.

A further seven students - Abi Pacey, Hannah Clark, Dan Whitehouse, Finlay Pearson, Zac Trouchkin, Oliver Page and Robbie Kerr - gained bronze awards to be placed in the top 15 per cent of entries.

Susan Buckland, a science teacher at the college, said: "Our students worked hard to prepare for the tests and they did really well.

"It was good experience for future exams and everyone who won an award or was commended was really pleased."

A total of 50 students completed the two 25-minute multiple choice questions on biology.

THe judges looked for entries that showed students had read about biology in their own time, watched TV natural

history programmes and took notice of biological items in the news.

A further six of the college's students were highly commended and another 16 commended.

Year 10 student Abi said: "THe questions ranged in difficulty and covered things we have and have not learned in lessons."

Ed, another Year 10 student, added: "We all want to have a career in the sciences so it was a good experience to be part of and we are pleased with the results we got."

AS PART of the Festival of Chichester, Priory Park will be transformed into a haven for music lovers over the second weekend of July.

Following the success of last year's debut, the Priory Park Festival will once again play host to a number of talented musicians and performers as well as a range of food, drinks and fairground attractions.

THis year's line-up includes Tony Christie, Georgie Fame, S Club, Deborah Bonham Band, THe Bog Rolling Stones, Ruby and the Revelators, Johnny Mars, Heath Seeker, Soul of Santana, La Havana Jazz, Abba Chique, Curfew Sideways, Josephine and the Artizans and Symbol Cured Riot.

With two stages for the musicians to perform on, you will have no shortage of entertainment. THere will also be plenty of delicious foods and drinks to sample from around the area.

THe festival lasts three days, opening on Friday, 5pm-11pm; Saturday 1pm-11pm and Sunday, 1pm-10.30pm.

You can choose to buy tickets for the whole weekend or for a specific day.

Wines under ten pounds punch above their weight Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

SAINSBURY'S is my port of call this week in my quest to unearth wines priced between £5-£10 for your consideration.

In search of crisp and aromatic whites I looked to the Antipodes and selected three Sauvignon Blancs, the grape variety being the flagship varietal of New Zealand, initially concentrating on a 2016 Glenridge Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc priced currently at £6.50 and noting its sweet and sharp characteristics with zesty citrus and passion fruit to the fore. THis wine is well balanced, crisp on the palate and fresh and fruity and one better served chilled.

For an extra 25 pence of outlay, the 2016 Most Wanted Sauvignon Blanc is not as sweet as some other Marlborough wines and tasted to me more like a French Sauvignon Blanc with greater minerality and decidedly crisp and dry in essence well worth a go.

THe third one, currently on offer for £9, was the 2016 Brancott Estate Terroir Series whose bottle label is eye-catching.

Some of you may recall that just 40 years ago the wine giants Montana established the Brancott Estate as their first vineyard

in Marlborough, as prior to this the South Island had been deemed too cold to grow grapes, and the rise in world acclaim has been remarkable.

You are guaranteed flavour in abundance with a Brancott and this Terroir Series does not remotely disappoint with a scent of citrus and jasmine on the nose and lemon and grapefruit to tickle your taste buds.

THis wine indeed seems to combine the classic styles of the two most renowned areas for making this wine variety, namely Marlborough and Sancerre, with the start

palate producing the classic Marlborough style of intense aromatic fruit flavours, but the end palate having the classic Sancerre smooth, lingering minerality at the finish - the best of both worlds, it might be argued.

A luxurious and refined white wine which should reach out to all regular imbibers of this celebrated grape variety and we have not even had to part with a tenner.

Changing to Hispanic mode, I next opted for two Riojas, commencing with

the Marqués de Montino Gran Selección Rioja, a dry young wine with ripe cherries and a hint of spice and a clear earthiness currently priced at £5.50.

My second Rioja, amazingly at the same price of £5.50, was a Carta Roja 2010 Grand Reservada which proved to be pleasingly soft with smooth vanilla and a hint of plum with wood tones to boot - a very quaffable wine at this price.

For a mere £5, the 2016 McGuigan Estate Shiraz punches above its weight with blackberry flavour and hints of pepper and I have yet to taste a sub-standard wine from this so reliable producer.

Priced at £5.75 the Terres de Galets 2015 Côtes Du Rhône oozes red berries and spice and is eminently drinkable.

INGREDIENTS • 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 4 tbsp gluten-free THai red curry paste • Large bunch spring onions, cut into 3cm pieces • 180g raw, peeled sustainable king prawns • 2 x 250g packs readycooked Tilda brown basmati rice • 100g frozen peas, defrosted • 3 tbsp coconut milk • 1 tbsp fish sauce • Handful fresh coriander, finely chopped • Lime wedges for squeezing

For just £6 expended, the Chianti Riserva di Mondelli of the 2014 vintage has a smooth texture and red fruit and black cherry flavours and justifies its price tag.

My wine of the week, however, is a 2014 Barossa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon - Cab Sav to the Aussies and is deep ruby in colour, has a heady nose and is veritably silky smooth, elegant and flavoursome without being overpowering as some Aussie reds can be.

Blackcurrant, cassis and eucalyptus wafting from the glass, the velvety mouthfeel and big soft tannins would ideally accompany a steak meal culminating in a decidedly long finish - well worth an outlay of £10 for this well-crafted gem.

Heat the vegetable oil in a large, high-sided frying pan or wok over a medium-high heat. Stir in the curry paste and fry for 1 minute.

Add the spring onions and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes to soften. Add the prawns and stir-fry until completely pink and cooked through.

Stir in the chopped coriander, then serve with lime wedges to squeeze over.

Roasted banana frozen yoghurt

INGREDIENTS

Method

• 4 very ripe bananas • 330g dark brown soft sugar • 900g plain Greek yogurt • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4.

2. Line a 20cm tin with foil.

Peel the bananas and cut lengthways. Place bananas in the tin and cover with the brown sugar.

Bake until the sugar melts and the banana is soft and roasted.

3. Reserve 1 banana and transfer the others along with the melted sugar to a large bowl. Mix in the yoghurt and the vanilla. Pour yoghurt in the ice cream maker and freeze it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Add the reserved banana just before you turn off the ice cream maker, this will ensure you have some chunks of banana in the frozen yoghurt. Enjoy it!

OK, SUMMER'S well and truly here. THe summer holidays are looming and the bikinis are coming out to play.

Are you dieting like crazy to get your summer body into shape? And now you are feeling sexier, right?

Now, let's concentrate on your sex life...

If you want to ‘spice up your life’ in more ways than one, you need to add some spice!

Literally!

Saffron is a spice that most people know about, but do you know how good it really is?

Otherwise called the golden spice of this world, Saffron is a stand out amongst the most common food flavours by food lovers.

It is also the most expensive spice on the planet.

Why? Because of its rich medicinal properties, uncommon accessibility and a strong elegant flavour.

Saffron is from the crocus flower family and does not grow in many areas. THis is the reason for it being as scarce and as costly as it is.

THere are three stigma on any one flower, so it takes 150,000 flowers to produce one kilogram of dried saffron, making it the most expensive and rare spice in the world.

Saffron can be found in India, Spain, Greece Egypt as well as various parts of the Middle East

and is popular in Indian, Spanish and Italian cuisine.

THe flower grows stalks that are called styles, connecting the threads to the rest of the plant.

THese orange-yellow looking threads are what is extracted from the plant and is called saffron.

Saffron has been around for centuries and has been known to be an aphrodisiac from as early as Cleopatra’s time as she used to bath in water that was infused with saffron before her sexual escapades.

How exactly does saffron work though and how does it affect men’s health?

Saffron is said to be an aphrodisiac.

Many studies have shown as well as many people’s reviews of saffron saying that it has very soothing and calming effects and in turn increases libido.

How this works is that saffron has a compound called carotene crocin that when released into the body works to increase sexual desires by triggering the arousal hormone in the brain.

Crocin is a natural compound found in gardenia and crocus flowers. Saffron contains the chemical picrocrocin, a chemical THat makes your body, especially sexual organs, more sensitive to the touch. Picrocrocin heightens perception of tactile sensations.

THe desire for pleasure and satisfaction, that is libido, is derived from the sexual organs and glands. Libido is low when there is a weakness or debility within the reproductive system.

THe compounds mentioned make saffron great for improving erection quality and may help cure erectile dysfunction especially in older men, because of the naturally relaxing effect on the body saffron also reduces the stress levels as well as tension in the body.

Mental disorders can also be another cause of erectile dysfunction.

Studies from patients put on a saffron regimen showed better signs of improvement from their mental conditions than if they were to take Prozac, which is usually prescribed for depression or mental instability.

Other mental conditions that the herb has very positive effects on are OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), obsessive eating disorders as well as blocks the negative sexual effects of antidepressants.

THe effects these medications and disorders have on the body affect the sexual arousal and desires of the male especially as they get older where the prevalence of these disorders are more frequent.

So if you don’t have this herb in your life already, try it and see what pops up!

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which will cover the start of a new era for its work.

RAIN doesn’t stop progress at Aldingbourne Country Centre.

Heavy rain during May certainly hasn’t slowed work on the fabulous new Aldingbourne Trust Conference Centre.

THe build is one of the most unique yet to be built by Amiri Construction, using a combination of traditional and innovative construction methods and materials. We are particularly looking forward to using the internal spiral slide!

Currently, the foundations are well underway. THey are set on 250mm diameter reinforced concrete shaft piles, set to a depth of 13 metres to meet the chalk bed-bearing strata of West Sussex. THe steel cage reinforcement structures for the pile caps are nearing completion, and the first concrete pour took place on May 19.

Over the coming weeks, the foundations will be completed and the ground floor slab cast, allowing the concrete frame structure to rise up from ground level.

While visiting Aldingbourne Trust, the Blogging Team dropped in to the Open Farm and were delighted to see so many happy animals. THe peacocks in particular were putting on a spectacular show for us. THe farm is populated with predominantly rescue animals and run on a daily basis by three members of staff, many of the people the trust supports and several volunteers. It was fantastic to see how much space all the animals had and how relaxed and well cared for they all seemed.

Amiri are delighted with the mugs, pictured above, they have had made by the Aldingbourne Country Centre Digital Media Team to celebrate the beginning of the exciting adventure.

While the charity are taking every effort to ensure the country centre continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development. We would like to thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding while this exciting new development build is in progress.

We are proud to say that this building project is part of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, of which one of its main aims is to improve the image of the construction industry to the general public. On this particular site, the public have a grandstand view looking down into the busy building site, and it is a great insight into how a building goes together!

SOCIAL enterprises from around Bognor Regis met some of their counterparts from Europe to help them grow and develop.

Aldingbourne Trust, Frame of Mind and THe Base skate park were among the 35 organisations who took part in the Spark Social Enterprise Project.

Other enterprises travelled from Netherlands and Belgium, as well as from around the UK, to the event in West Sussex to find out how they could develop their businesses.

THe initiative was welcomed

by Cllr Louise Goldsmith, the leader of West Sussex County Council.

She said: "We know and value the importance of social enterprises in West Sussex.

THey make a real difference to many local communities.

"THe overall Spark project will help regional and international social enterprises to network, exchange ideas and embrace innovation and grow.

"Social enterprises have a lot to offer the economy and this project will help to

provide invaluable support to them."

Social enterprises are businesses that have an environmental or social mission and that reinvest all or the greater part of their profits to achieve this.

THe Spark project includes an accelerator programme to help established social enterprises to grow and a programme of support for start-up social enterprises.

An Innovation Network is also being developed to help create a community of support and knowledge for social enterprises and support organisations.

THe first day of the weeklong event backed by the European Regional Development Fund saw more than 60 organisations take part. Social enterprises were joined by the Big Issue Investment Enterprise Europe Network, Coast to Capital local enterprise partnership and West Sussexbased councils.

THey discussed an action plan to promote and support the enterprises and setting up a network for them.

7PM ON the seventh of the seventh is the time Bognor Regis resident Kate Pollard has chosen for people to share their love.

THe One Love Bognor event next Friday will take place outside the pier and stretch out with the participants holding hands west towards Aldwick and east towards Felpham.

Kate, who painted the picture above to symbolise her feelings, said: "In this imperfect world, with so much pain and fear, let's take this opportunity to stand together in love and hope and honour and forgiveness and remembrance.

"I believe Bognor needs a chance to come together.

"People could come and stand as a community, whatever their personal motivation.

"THe only one we are going

to defeat the evil in the world is through love.

"I have had an amazing response to this idea. People have been so supportive.

Part-time education worker Kate, who has loved living in the town for 18 years, has chosen the date because it is the anniversary of the London suicide bombings in 2005.

"If you want to use it to remember those who so tragically lost their lives over recent months then come.

"You might be feeling lonely, marginalised, isolated or fearful, then come and stand.

"THere is no agenda. THere is no plan. THere is only a moment waiting for you to connect with it.

"We have a community in Bognor to be proud of. It is diverse and unique and bursting with potential. Let's see what love can do."

BIG ISSUE founder John Bird has backed a social enterprise in Bognor Regis.

Mr Bird referenced Frame of Mind as a successful example of businesses which benefit their communities and team members as well as their clients.

He used an article in the latest edition of his famous magazine to praise the work of the not-for-profit organisation based at the Arun Business Park off Shripney Road.

Team members of Frame of Mind are pictured below reading the piece.

Mr Bird became aware of its work when he spoke at the Spark social enterprise innovation conference and met one of the founders of Frame of Mind, Ian Bates.

He wrote: "THe enthusiasm amongst devotees of business with a social purpose is intoxicating. But step outside its narrow circle and you have people looking at you when you mention social enterprise bemused, as if it was an untried novelty.

"Picture framing for disabled people? Down in Bognor a social enterprise that employs the disabled to make picture frames seemed to be a quintessential thing I am aiming at: get businesses going and supported where that thing you were going to buy you buy from a business with a social echo.

"When are we going to convert social security into social opportunity, a trampoline and springboard into an improving life?

"Making picture frames with a social echo - you get what you want while giving somebody in need support - is as I said quintessentially what my work is about.

"THere are big issues around poverty, But we need to make them fight small."

Mr Bates said he met Mr Bird when he bought a copy of Big Issue after his talk.

"He saw him at the other end of the room and went up to him to ask if he would autograph my magazine so I could auction it to raise money for us," said Mr Bates.

"He asked for our details but I didn't think he was going to mention us. It's really good and to be mentioned in something that is national is completely new to us. It's pretty exciting and we will have to see what comes of it."

THe two had met before about eight years at another event aimed at social enterprises some two years after Mr Bates and his wife, THeresa, had started Frame of Mind.

As reported, it provides vocational training and wellbeing places for adults with mental health issues like depression and anxiety, learning disabilities and dementia.

A potential link is also being explored with the Department for Work and Pensions to train those who are without jobs.

Some 20 trainees are on its workforce and frame about 100 photographs, paintings and certificates a month.

PREVIOUSLY unseen films of coastal life can be viewed online for the first time.

THe BFI's (British Film Institute) Britain on Film: Coast and Sea project has enabled the rare historical footage of the south east of England's past to be made available.

Highlights of the collection cover subjects which include lifeboat launches, leisure time and the building of landmarks. A total of 600 films which span 100 years are included.

Robin Baker, the BFI National Archive's head curator, said: "Comprising over a century of filmmaking, Britain on Film has highlighted some of the lesser known films from our collections, some of which not even curators had seen before."

Builder left his mark on town's expansion William Tate played a large part in major construction projects as Bognor grew THE NAME of William Tate appears in relation to so many constructions within the developing town that he was often referred to as 'the maker of Bognor'.

William Tate was born in 1848 and was the fourth of ten children. THe Tate family was a well-established family in the town at that time. His grandfather founded a furniture business in the town, which was eventually taken over and carried on by the Reynolds’ Company, the company that is still in existence today. William was apparently quite a rebel in his youth and his education can only be classed as basic, due to the lack of schools in the area at this time.

When he was still in his 20s, his parents decided to emigrate to Australia - this must have been quite a decision for a family to take in 1868. THe family arrived in Brisbane and set up a new life for themselves. However, within three years - in 1871 - William decided to return to the town of his birth with his wife to start a business in West Street.

He eventually became a member of the urban district council and was very supportive of electricity arriving in the town, building the first generator in the town, which was later taken over by the electricity company. He also supported the principle of extending East

Parade from Park Road to Nyewood Lane.

In 1891, William Tate became involved in building the sea wall between York Road and Gloucester Road, and due to the large size and nature of this project he decided to resign his seat on the council to enable him to have more time for the work involved. For most of the 1900s, his work was recorded on these railings on the seafront, where his name was incorporated into the base of the supporting rails. A section of these have been on display in the Bognor Regis Local History Museum in West Street during the summer months.

He eventually moved his business to No 7 High Street, where for about 30 years he carried out his trade of cabinet maker and provided complete house furnishings in the town. Eventually, this proved not to be sufficient for him and he decided to branch out into the building trade.

In 1900 he was involved in numerous other major constructions in the town, such as the Princess Mary Memorial Home. THis was opened on July 9, the same day as another of his constructions, THe Victoria Convalescent Home, on the promenade.

As the town continued to expand, he was primarily involved in two of the largest constructions of their time, that of the Arcade,

which was opened during August, 1902, and also he built the Kursaal, which contained a skating rink, balconied tea room, Pierrotland, a theatre and shops.

THis seafront building opened in 1910. While it changed its name to THe Rex, it remained a major construction on the seafront until it was finally demolished in 1977 to make way for the Regis Centre. On the completion of this impressive building on the seafront, one of the councillors remarked, this ‘will serve as a lasting monument of his enterprise'.

Tate also became involved in the expansion of streets especially around the area originally known as Canada Gardens for the Poor, which then became known as Canada Grove, Ockley Road and Gainsboro Road, where houses were first recorded in 1904 in the Trade Directories.

When I lived in Gainsboro Road, some 30 years ago, we had a manhole cover near the house designated to him.

In 1911, he was elected chairman of the council and within 12 months was involved in the erection of shops opposite the police station, then in London Road. In the early days, the three shops concerned had their rent fixed at £105 a year. It was reported that these shops ‘added greatly to the appearance of the area’. A newspaper report at this time provides us with an insight into this man as it told that, ‘he is prominent in a double sense – in business life he has done much for the development and progress of the town, while as a member of the urban council, his experience of that body extends over a period of some twenty years. His life has been a life of energy and progress, and his succession to the chief public office of the town, by the unanimous vote of his colleagues, may be looked upon as an acknowledgment and

tribute to his private enterprise, which has done so much for the advancement and progress of the town'.

Other areas have been attributed to him, such as Gordon Avenue, Campbell Road and the estate where today we have Marshall Avenue. During the later period of his life in the town he lived in Turret House in Felpham, until 1912 when he moved to Southsea.

He eventually retired from work only six months before he died in December, 1931, aged 83 - three sons and five daughters survived him from his marriages. His place in the history of Bognor can never be doubted based on the number of areas with which he was involved.

In 1985, a letter was sent to the town from a person in Australia tracing their family history. THese people were trying to find out why the family emigrated to Australia, as the writer could not understand why a person with a substantial business in England should close it down and move their complete family to the other side of the world – especially in the mid-1800s.

Today, the town has developed. Companies have moved into an area to build large developments, as requested by architects.

THerefore, it is difficult for us to imagine the drive and enthusiasm that must have been used by William Tate.

A singular man with a motto – Progress – of which there is no doubt he achieved great things here in Bognor. I am sure there are more tales of his escapades in the town, with further developments and his involvements in building projects that have not been documented. However, there is no doubt at all that this man, at the beginning of the 20th century, was justly known as ‘the maker of Bognor’.

Sussex Legal Services help local people receive specialist Drivers and Escorts – Chichester Stroke Club Chichester Stroke Club meets at the Newell Centre, Chichester on a Thursday morning to give support to stroke victims. The Club is a unique facility providing continued aftercare and encouragement to stroke survivors when they leave hospital through mental and physical stimulation and support, and respite for carers and partners, enabling them to meet like-minded people in a relaxed environment. Drivers for a minibus (training provided) and escorts are needed to help transport stroke victims to the weekly club. You will need a current clean driving licence and be willing to drive a minibus. Driving is on a rota basis so you do not have to commit to every week.

Group Co-ordinator – Contact the Elderly Contact the Elderly is a national charity whose aim is to

relieve the loneliness and isolation felt by elderly people living alone; they meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month from 3 to 5pm in a volunteer host’s home where they chat over tea and cakes. Coordinators ensure everything runs smoothly each month. They organise the monthly group outings by liaising with the hosts and the drivers so that everyone is clear about the time, date and place. It is the coordinator’s job to be organised and keep everyone informed, planning the monthly host schedule, assisting with DBS checks and liaising with new volunteers and guests. Coordinators are also often volunteer drivers too. You will need common sense, organisational ability, kindness and patience.

Citizen Advocate – Impact Initiatives Citizen Advocates are required to develop a long-term partnership with a person with a learning disability and speak up for them. This is a partnership between two people. The person with a learning disability is called the advocacy partner. An advocacy partner is someone at

risk of having choices, wishes and decisions ignored, and who needs help in making them known and making sure they are responded to. A Citizen Advocate is a person who volunteers to speak up for and support an advocacy partner and is not paid to do so. The ideal person for this role will have good communication skills, be nonjudgemental and understanding of confidentiality, have the time to meet his/her partner on a regular basis and be able to cope with potentially stressful situations.

Box Collector (Bognor Area) – RNLI The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea; they provide, on call, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. Box Collector Volunteers will be responsible for 10 to 12 RNLI store boxes personally, regularly emptying the boxes when full of change and providing receipts to the box location owner/manager.

They may have up to 30 if they wish and will liaise with the Treasurer and possibly some Committee Members or other Box Volunteers.

Chi's Baker braves heat to take the PostSport Midsummer 5 crown at Goodwood HUNDREDS of people braved the searing heat to complete the annual Midsummer 5 race around Goodwood.

Taking place over the traditional distance of five miles, the 30th running of the event was as competitive as ever with seasoned athletes lining up alongside those simply wanting a challenge.

Despite the hot weather, officials from Chichester Runners, which organised the event, reported very few minor health issues as those taking part completed a lap of the iconic Motor Racing Circuit before finishing at Lavant Memorial Hall.

Chichester Runners' James Baker made light work of the course, coming home in first place in the men's race for the 14th time.

Baker's time of 26 minutes 41 seconds was nearly a minute clear of Julian Manning of Denmead Runners, who just edged Chi athlete Conrad Meagher into third with times of 27:35 and 27:48 respectively.

In the women's race, it was a clean sweep for Chichester Runners as Fay Cripps came home in first place (33:32).

She was joined on the podium by team mates Lucy THraves (34:03) and Anne

Sydenham (34:10).

THere was further success for Chi in the Women's Masters race with Nikki Hill (37:54) coming home in first place in the V35 category for those aged 35 and over.

Kim Nelson (38:07) took the honours in V45 while Anita Sherman, who is not attached to a club, took the V55 crown in a very good 35:51.

Val Brockwell, of Portslade HH, won the over 65s race for women in a time of 42:13 while Rose Ellis, of Chichester Runners, was the first junior home in 36:11.

In the men's categories, Damon Howard of City of Portsmouth took the V40 crown in 29:42. THere was double success in the V50 and V60 for Chichester Runners as Jim Garland (30:14) and John Miles (36:23) recorded the best times in those categories.

In the V70, there were plenty of cheers for Roger Osgood of Havant AC who came home in 40:40 while the junior crown went to Chichester Runners' Leo Stallard, who finished in 28:25.

A spokesman for Chichester Runners said: "Many thanks to all the marshals and helpers without whom this event would not happen."

DARTS: Micky Rowland fired in close to a 30 point a dart average as he guided Friary Z to a comfortable win over Squash Club in week seven of the Bognor Friday Summer Darts League.

Falcons out slug Solent in tight win

CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club edged further up the league with a hard-earned win over Solent Sluggers.

A minor squad reshuffle saw junior Jenny Horton step in for her debut as catcher to play out a tough fixture in the sunshine at Southsea.

Sluggers took the lead early on by living up to their name – an early innings hit saw the ball leave the park altogether.

But the Falcons nibbled away with home runs from David Morris and Peter Martin, as Stefan Panayotopoulos was his usual acrobatic self in centre field, snatching some remarkable deep catches much to the disbelief of the onlooking Portsmouth team.

As neither team managed to surge ahead too far, the game saw a few nervy moments in the field with the Sluggers dropping a few routine catches and the Falcons throwing the ball loose on occasion, but both teams continued to hit well.

MVP Lucy Morris repeatedly slogged into shallow centre and Ally Warr found her form

on her third at-bat to reach base and knock in Bronte Harvey, keeping Chichester just behind the tiring Sluggers.

Going into the late stages, the score had never been more than 3 runs apart, but the Falcons blew it open in the ninth.

Jason Mercer whacked a 2 RBI double to tie the game, Peter Martin homered the go-ahead run and James Wheeler, hitting 5 for 5 on the night, reached second base hustling out on a close play.

Up stepped Hettie McNeil with a pivotal punch to centre field, bringing in Wheeler to put the Falcons three runs ahead with the Sluggers still to bat.

After getting the final two outs quickly, the Sluggers rallied. Sensing trouble, the Falcons outfield made a small positional adjustment for the next pitch and it worked, with Harvey getting the out to ensure the Falcons won the game 15-13.

TEN-PIN BOWLING: THe Industrial Pirates League in Chichester had their second week of the new season on Sunday.

THe league is now down to six teams but the remaining teams are enjoying themselves and already the league is seeing some good scores.

On lanes 11/12, Royal Mail Tigers were playing leaders Make It A Double, and the former came away with a 4-0 win. Games of 203 and 205 from Graham Burnett helped set this score up. When he faltered in the last game, his partner Dale Longyear weighed in with a 205 of his own.

Lanes 13/14 saw last season champions Odd Bowls take on Banana Splits, Odd Bowls won this game 4-0 with Martin Clark hitting a good first game of 215 which turned out to be highest of the night in the league.

Lanes 15/16 had Scared Splitless against Mean Machine and this match ended in a 2-2 draw. After losing the first two games, Mean Machine turned things around winning the final match by 72 pins So after two weeks Odd Bowls find themselves back at the top of the table with 7 points followed by Royal Mail Tigers with 5 points and everybody else in the league is on 3 points.

Middleton suffer home defeat despite Robson's super century

MIDDLETON CC's mid-season slump continues as Sean Heather's side suffered a fourth defeat in five at home to Roffey.

THe visitors made it home with two wickets to spare to claim victory in Sussex Premier clash as the light dimmed at the Sports Ground. THe margin of defeat would have been a lot greater but for a superb score of 150 from Angus Robson.

THe opener held things together as Middleton slumped to 38 for 5 after being put in to bat.

But Robson found great support from Jamie THompson (21) and Tommy Davies (24*), putting on 97 with the latter for the ninth wicket as Middleton reached 231 for 9.

In response, Heather's side looked in control after reducing the visitors to 70 for 4. But Roffey rallied and - despite Robson taking 3 for 26 - limped home with two wickets to spare.

Middleton will have a good chance to get back to winning ways tomorrow when they travel to Brighton & Hove (12pm), a side who are on a similar run of poor form and sit one place behind Heather's side in eighth in the ten-team league.

Bognor suffer double defeat Priory Park edge out Pagham Ne

BOGNOR A will be hoping to pick up form fast after chalking up another home defeat in the West Sussex Bowls League.

THe Waterloo Square side have won just one of their six games so far this term, leaving them towards the bottom of division one.

THe latest defeat came against Littlehampton-based Norfolk, who registered a 76-67 victory on Saturday.

It was a bad weekend for Bognor, as the B team also lost, this time on the road at Arundel.

THe 91-72 defeat leaves them third bottom in division two.

Bognor A now have a week off before travelling to Norfolk on July 3 and then hosting Crablands the following day.

Elsewhere in division two and Pagham's good form continues after a narrow 82-79 victory on the road at Tarring Priory A. THat win takes the Swansea Gardens side to within one point of top spot with a game in hand.

In division three, Chichester Priory Park B lost ground on the top sides after a home draw against Norfolk B.

Both teams scored 73 each, and took home five points to add to their league tally.

With Chi currently sitting in fourth and nine points behind the leaders, they will need a good second half of the season if they want to push on to take the title this time round.

THeir next match is at Norfolk B on July 7, from 2.30pm.

Meanwhile, Selsey's Little Spain welcomed Norfolk to their sun-drenched rinks for an entertaining friendly match.

Despite the home side winning on three rinks, it was the visitors who went away with the victory, when Little Spain lost by four shots, 73-77.

It was a busy week for the Spaniards as on Saturday a side travelled to Priory Park Chichester.

THe home club enhanced their reputation as a top club in the county with a whopping 70 point victory in this friendly fixture.

Despite their heavy defeat, Little Spain members praised the hosts for their hospitality and wished them well in their quest to be crowned county champions this time round.

CHICHESTER Priory Park took a big step towards promotion after completing a remarkable win over local rivals Pagham.

Both sides have been in good form this term, sitting near the top of Sussex Division THree.

But in a day where the ball held sway over the bat, Chi made the most of the conditions at Priory Park to complete a 52-run win over their visitors.

THe victory means Priory leapfrog Pagham into the promotion places and sets up the second half of the season perfectly.

It did look as though it would be an unhappy homecoming for Chi, who were playing their first match at the park since relocating to Goodwood.

After being put in to bat, Matthew Geffen's side struggled as Pagham's bowlers took a series of early wickets.

After being reduced to 42 for 5, Matthew Bennison (50) steadied the ship scoring a half century.

With Mike Smith (32) providing a muchneeded cameo, Chi limped to 146 all out, with

Joe De La Fuente (3 for 19) and Peter Cotterill (3 for 61) the pick of Pagham's bowlers.

But, led by skipper Geffen (5 for 28) and overseas star Abhishek Patel (3 for 10), Chi came out of the blocks fast, reducing the visitors to 34 for 5.

Ryan Barratt (31) offered some resistance for Pagham but when he was dismissed, caught and bowled by Jay Hartard, the writing was on the wall - with the Nyetimber Lane side only reaching 94 all out.

Next up for Chi is a trip to league leaders Crawley Super Eagles tomorrow, who suffered a shock defeat on the road to Haywards Heath last time out.

Pagham meanwhile will welcome Roffey Seconds to Nyetimber Lane looking to get their season back on track.

It was a better weekend for Pagham Seconds, who comfortably defeated Billingshurst Seconds by seven wickets in division five west.

David Leader took 6 for 59 before Justin Scott (66*) and Danny Berkley (44) guided them home to victory.

Tomorrow Pagham seconds will travel to Broadwater (12.30pm) before making the trip up to THree Bridges on Sunday (1pm) in the next round of the Gray-Nicolls T20 Cup. In the same division, tomorrow Middleton Seconds host Worthing Seconds while Priory Park Seconds host Goring Seconds. Both matches start at 12.30pm.

Ashmore's knock not enough for Bognor BOGNOR'S disappointing season with the bat continues as the Regis Oval side suffered consecutive defeats in the space of two days.

At the halfway point of the season, Max Ashmore's side are staring relegation from Sussex Division Two in the face.

THere was a chance to pull themselves away from the dropzone this weekend.

But defeats on Saturday to Lindfield and then on Sunday to the visiting Guernsey Sarnians means that Bognor are now 25 points adrift from safety at the halfway mark of the season.

Next up is a trip to Worthing tomorrow (12.30pm), a side directly above Regis in the table and without a win in two.

THe bad weekend did not start all that badly.

After being put in to bat by Lindfield, Ashmore and Charlie Laforet put on 44 for the first

wicket.

But when the skipper was bowled for 21, that triggered a collapse where Bognor lost five wickets for 20 runs, eventually being dismissed for 102. THat score was never going to be enough. Despite Joe Ashmore taking four quick wickets, the visitors reached the score with six wickets in hand.

On Sunday, there was a much-improved display against the islanders. After losing the toss, Jerome Jones (3 for 29) and Josh Sargeant (2 for 32) bowled well as Guernsey scored 217 for 7 in their 45 overs.

But Bognor's frailties with the bat continued and despite the skipper scoring 66, once he was dismissed at 121-3, the home side did not look like reaching the score, coming up 33 runs short.

El-Abd has a few days to dwell on the news about taking the helm. Initial thoughts will be on strengthening the squad, with only 11 players signed up for next season.

With just over a month until the season starts, El-Abd will want to bring in four or five players of his own to complement the squad he knows so well.

THen next week it is straight into pre-season training, with the players being put through their paces by fitness coach Neil Cockroft.

Previous managers had managed to escape the former Navy man's gruelling regime of runs along the South Downs.

But, as player-manager, El-Abd will have to lead from the front, keeping focused on getting in to shape so he can marshal the back line as successfully as he did last season.

THen it is on to a packed pre-season schedule which starts a week on Saturday away to south coast rivals Worthing (3pm).

Some Rocks' fans may be fearful that El-Abd may struggle to juggle his duties as a manager with a key player in the squad.

But history shows there are plenty of playermanagers who have made a good stab at things in the past, such as Kenny Dalglish (Liverpool), Graeme Souness (Rangers), and Glenn Hoddle (Swindon Town and Chelsea).

Do half as well as those names and the Rocks' fans will enjoy another good season.

IT'S TAKEN close to two months to go through the process but finally the Rocks have a new man at the helm.

It was on Wednesday lunch time that Sami El-Abd's appointment as the new manager of Bognor Regis Town Football Club was made.

As with previous appointments, this new number one has a strong tie to the club - with the towering centre half not only an integral part of the side that gained promotion from the Isthmian Premier last year, but also a strong presence off it.

It is these leadership qualities that stood out for Rocks general manager Jack Pearce and assistant manager Darin Kilpartrick as they spent seven weeks speaking to eight candidates looking for Jamie Howell's successor.

In the latest of our behindthe-scenes Q&As on life at Nyewood in the off-season, the Post spoke to Pearce about what made El-Abd the obvious choice.

ROCKS' fans are not used to new faces in the dugout at Nyewood Lane.

When Sami El-Abd accepted the post as manager at Bognor he became only the sixth person in 40 years to take on the mantle.

At 29, El-Abd, pictured right with assistant Darin Kilpartrick, is one of the youngest to have taken on the challenge. But anyone who has seen the centre half in action since he joined in May 2015 will know that Sami will give everything to the cause.

El-Abd's journey started in Brighton, where he was born into a sporting mad family of an Egyptian father and British mother.

Growing up with two older brothers, he was always likely to be competitive, particularly when both end up as professional sportsmen.

Joe is a rugby player in France while Adam is an Egyptian international footballer who played for Brighton & Hove Albion and is now at Shrewsbury. Sami followed his brother Adam's footsteps and joined Brighton and Hove Albion's academy.

Sami stayed with the Seagulls until he was 16 before being released. After playing for Crawley Town and a spell with Hayes & Yeading, he settled at Whitehawk. In 2015 he joined Bognor, where he has become a fan favourite.

ROCKS' stalwart Jack Pearce says continuing the team spirit of last year was the major factor in appointing Sami El-Abd as the club's new manager.

Bognor have been without a gaffer since Jamie Howell left for Eastbourne Borough just days after the club had sealed a return to the National League South.

After speaking to a range of candidates, Pearce announced that El-Abd would take on the job as player-manager on Wednesday.

He will be assisted by Gary Charman and Darin Kilpartrick, both of whom have experience of being number one.

Pearce, who has spent more than 35 years at the club and is now general manager, said: "Because we have signed so many of last year's squad, because one of our strengths was our team spirit, we have decided to appoint within.

"It's been done with the best intentions and we all hope that he will do a good job."

El-Abd's first job will be to try and sort out the Dan Lincoln situation.

THe goalkeeper was voted into the Isthmian Premier team of the year after a string of excellent performances last term.

But the former Reading trainee is in great demand and the Rocks are yet to hear if Lincoln is willing to commit to another year at Nyewood Lane.

Pearce said: "We will speak to Dan in the next couple of days but decisions like that are now

It's never an easy decision to appoint a new manager.

Football management is a tricky thing to get right and it's not normally a long term solution.

THere are many managers where it doesn't work at one club and then it will work at another. It's a very perilous industry.

What was the number one factor in appointing him?

Because we have signed so many of last year's squad, because one of our strengths was our team spirit we have decided to appoint within.

Sami said he wanted to have a go at managing and after speaking to him we thought it was a good match.

It's been done with the best intentions and we all hope that he will do a good job.

But it's not easy for anyone who is stepping in to a new job, especially after a club has been promoted.

For the last two and a bit seasons, all supporters and players have been able to expect positive things.

THere's a good chance that this year we are not going to be as successful as we've been in previous years.

We may be mid-table and we may not be winning every single week.

But it's not something that the club is used to and we don't know how players, staff, fans and the media will react to all of that.

It's a difficult enough job without those pressures but I'm sure everyone will rally round.

What will Sami bring to the job?

We know that he will give his all. He has showed good leadership on the pitch, and he has got a very powerful voice in the dressing room which means people listen to him.

Being a manager is a different experience to being a player but we feel he has the skills to take the club forward at this time.

How long do you think he will stay for?

You never know with football management. THere will not be a contract for the manager - we've never had one in all the time that I've been here.

What are the targets for the new year?

Sami will set the targets while I will simply watch how the team will perform.

THe only thing we have told him is that we are looking for a fit, well-disciplined team that plays a good passing style of football.

If you get a good fit team that can pass the ball then we will win more than will lose.
