New homes' flood risk warning COUNTRYSIDE campaigners have claimed plans to concrete large areas around Bognor Regis will cause floods.

THe Campaign to Protect Rural England believes the intention to allow large housing estates to be built on farmland in Pagham and North Bersted is flawed.

Its criticism of Arun District Council's latest version of its local plan land use blueprint to develop six sites for 6,400 sites has led it to stage a meeting next

week to discuss the issue.

THe event - called Planning for real housing need not developer greed in Arun - will take place at 7pm on Friday at Barnham Community Hall off Yapton Road.

THe group's Sussex branch states in its response to the local plan: "We have fundamental concerns with the plan strategy. More information needs to be included in the plan for the funding and

management of drainage and flooding infrastructure.

"To comply with the National Planning Policy Framework, particularly in this district, which has such a high sensitivity to flooding issues, much more work needs to be done to demonstrate compliance with the framework.

"THe...instructions to developers are sound but they do not provide the proof that any of these six sites will be safe

for their lifetime, taking account of the vulnerability of users, without increasing flood risk elsewhere and, where possible, will reduce flood risk overall."

THe CPRE says little spare capacity exists in the foul water network and pumping mains to the waste water treatment works at Ford, Pagham and Lidsey. THis means communities which the works serve - like Barnham, Middleton and Turn to page four

Voting begins for BID plans

VOTES have begun to be cast about the future of Bognor Regis town centre.

Business owners have started to have their say about the setting up of a Business Improvement District for the shopping area.

Voting will continue for a month until 5pm on July 3. Among the first business owners to cast their votes were Mariya James and Hannah Shrimpton, pictured above.

Mariya, from Boutique Roma in THe Arcade, said: "I've voted 'yes' for the BID because I want Bognor Regis to look better, bring more people into town and do better business.

Hannah, of THe William Hardwicke, in the High Street, said: "We're supporting this positive step towards a coordinated business effort to make the town centre better.

"We're especially excited about the proposals to boost the night time economy. THese activities will help businesses like ours."

THe BID's supporters say it will give businesses in the area, from the Royal Norfolk Hotel to Butlin's and north to the University of Chichester campus, more control of their trading environment and working with partners to: Promote a positive image of the town; Reduce crime and anti-social behaviour; Stimulate the evening and night-time economy; Better parking for visitors and staff.

THe BID's work will be funded by a 1.5

per cent levy on the business rates bill for premises with a rateable value of at least £6,000.

THe charge will produce £140,000 a year or more than £700,000 in the five years of the BID if it is set up next April.

THe BID will be a not-for-profit company with a board of directors made up of businesses in the town.

THey will oversee the activities in line with the priorities agreed in the consultation process.

Town centre manager Toyubur Rahman has co-ordinated the development of the BID proposal on behalf of the businesses.

He said: "It's down to the businesses now. THey have decided what their priorities are and the solutions to help tackle them.

"THis is a great opportunity for them to take action themselves and make Bognor Regis better for business.

"If businesses want to see a better Bognor Regis, want to do more business and want more influence in how Bognor Regis develops, then they will vote 'yes'."

Businesses which are backing the BID include national companies such as Boots and Morrisons, as well as smaller concerns like Sussex Camera Centre and Stock Blinds.

But the scheme does have critics like Roger Lewis, of Squires Model and Craft Tools. He has questioned its spending and business plan and says it will be used to replace spending by councils.

Climping road to be changed to stop drivers on short cuts HIGHWAYS bosses are changing a road in Climping to stop motorists using it as a rat run.

Four one-way traffic islands will be built at different locations in Horsemere Green Lane to make vehicles give way to oncoming traffic.

Signs will be installed to show which direction vehicles have priority.

THe road's speed limit is also being cut, from 40mph to 30mph.

Work on the £25,000-worth of changes starts next Monday and the road will be closed for up to five weeks.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member

for infrastructure and highways, said: "THese changes have come about after consulting with the local community in Climping. Reducing the speed limit and introducing the traffic islands will slow traffic and make it less appealing for motorists to use Horsemere Green Lane as a short cut."

Climping Parish Council chairman Cllr Colin Humphris said: "It is good to see this project come to fruition as residents have been concerned for many years for the safety of both motorists and pedestrians."

It was a good use of developers' funds which dated back to the late 1990s.

Fearne's got flower power to win annual town award

Safety work for high-rise fire risk

SENIOR Ranger Fearne Latham will have her floral design seen by thousands of people in Bognor Regis this summer.

Fearne, pictured above, has waited ten years to win a prize in the annual Bognor Regis In Bloom competition run with the town's Girlguiding leaders.

Her wait paid off when she collected the overall winner's certificate, as well being the best in her age group, from the town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, on Tuesday. She also won a £15 shopping voucher.

THe design by Fearne, 17, of Bognor Regis South Rangers, was judged by In Bloom members to be the best interpretation of this year's theme of Beside the Seaside.

She said: "It's cool to win. I've been entering this competition since I was a Brownie and I've not won a prize at all.

"I like the thought art can be turned into flowers. It's amazing to think my design has

been planted. I will definitely be coming here in the summer to look at it after the plants have bloomed. THe competition was quite easy for me because I live quite close to the sea and I have a lot of happy memories about the seaside."

Fearne's design has been created in a flowerbed at the south end of the miniature golf course in Waterloo Square.

Measuring some 5m long X 1.5m wide, it contains at least 500 flowers. THe sea will be shown by lobelia Crystal Palace, the sky by lobelia Cambridge Blue and the clouds by lobelia White. Yellow French marigolds will depict the beach.

Town Force member Joe Lawrence, of Bognor Regis Town Council, made two deckchairs and a boat from recycled wood, to add the finishing touches.

THe competition attracted what was thought to be a record number of 170

entries. Town council mayor's secretary Rebecca Vervecken said: "THese flowers will bloom in a few weeks to look like a scene on the beach.

"THe Guides, Brownies and Rainbows are really good at getting involved in this contest. THey are really enthusiastic. We want to try to get as many members of the younger generation as possible involved in the town."

Denise Kinrade, Girlguiding's district commissioner for Bognor Regis south, said: "Our members create the designs in their units. THey get a lot out of it. It's nice for them to keep their designs and look back on them in years to come."

THe other age group winners at the ceremony were: Megan Randall, six, 1st Bognor Regis Rainbows and Chloe Mole, 1st Flansham Brownies. Fellow winner Ruby Smith, of 3rd Felpham Guides, was absent.

FIRE chiefs have reassured Bognor Regis residents they work constantly on the safety of tower blocks.

Fitzleet House is the tallest building in the town at 15 storeys. Attention has switched to such high-rise accommodation after Wednesday's tragedy in West London.

THe confirmed death toll from the fire at Grenfell Tower had reached 17 people by yesterday afternoon. THe total was expected to increase as the investigation into the blaze continued.

Hospital treatment was being given to 34 casualties. Of those, 17 were in a critical condition.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said on Wednesday: "THis terrible event is still unfolding and the circumstances of what has gone on are still very unclear, traumatic and challenging for all concerned.

"At this stage, further speculation would be unhelpful but we can reassure West Sussex residents that incidents such as this are, thankfully, rare. We work closely with local authorities, developers, housing associations, landlords and tenants to help ensure that fire safety in high-rise accommodation is safe and appropriate."

Training exercises are occasionally held at multi-storey buildings to test

the fire service's response to a fire.

One took place at Fitzleet House in August, 2009. It saw everyone who lived in the 15-storey tower block in Queensway evacuated.

Some 40 firefighters were involved in an event which lasted about an hour. Six fire engines and specialist appliances were used.

Ian Paine, a watch manager at Bognor Regis fire station, said at the time: "Fitzleet House is a unique property because it has only one stairwell up the middle.

"Because of that, this exercise is very important to us. We want to make sure we have got our procedures right. It's very important to see how they go."

Fitzleet House was built in the 1960s.

It consists of 74 flats. Fifteen of them are in a three-storey block next to the main building.

THe fire and rescue service has advised residents in high rise flats to devise an initial safe escape plan.

THis should involve leaving straight away if a fire starts inside their flat or maisonette and closing doors behind them.

"If there is a fire elsewhere in the building, then the structure of your flat - walls, floors and doors - is designed to give you a minimum of 30-60 minutes' protection from a fire," it adds.

THe CPRE also stated it had serious concerns about the ability of Arun to ensure the housing target in the plan of about 1,000 homes a year. "Arun's local plan does not acknowledge that there is considerable uncertainty about the economy and that delivery rates are dependent on the health of the wider economy," it says.

Other aspects of concern are the ability to meet the area's housing need, the plan's failure to reflect the character of the area and the impact on schools, roads and healthcare.

THe six sites earmarked by Arun for large housing developments are Pagham North, Pagham South, Barnham/Eastergate/Westergate, Yapton, Littlehampton and Angmering North.

New request for housing call in RE-APPOINTED government minister Sajid Javid has been urged to examine major housing plans for Pagham.

Bersted Parish Council members have backed their neighbours in Pagham by asking the secretary of state for communities and local government to call in three plans for 950 homes.

Developers have submitted the applications for sites in Sefter Lane, Hook Lane and south of Summer Lane for Arun District Council to decide.

But Cllr Brian Knight, Bersted Council's chairman, said Mr Javid - who retained his role after last week's general election should heed the demand from Pagham's councillors to intervene in the matter.

"THe aim of this letter is to reinforce that request from Bersted Parish Council's perspective," said Cllr Knight.

"With Bersted to the north, the sea to the south and Pagham Harbour Local Nature Reserve to the west, almost all vehicular traffic travelling in and out of Pagham must pass through Bersted.

"Accordingly, we have recently conducted traffic surveys that reveal a daily flow rate of almost 1,000 motor vehicles per hour during peak periods. Pagham's own figures - taken on narrow country roads that have changed very little in the last hundred years - support these findings.

"With the daily westbound commuter traffic already reduced to a crawl with the concomitant resultant air pollution, plus the recent ministerial decision to abandon an upgrade to the A27 around Chichester, it is clear that our respective localities are approaching saturation point in terms of vehicular access and that the cumulative

effect of the subject planning applications would have much wider and damaging implications."

Mr Javid's civil servants have agreed to consider the claims about the proposals before he decides whether or not to formally call them in. If he does, he will appoint a planning inspector to consider the proposals.

Arun has allocated the sites in its draft local plan land use blueprint for a total of 1,200 homes by 2031.

Bersted is also facing revived plans for 2,300 homes north of Chalcraft Lane.

THe farmland's owners have begun the process of compiling a formal planning application by outlining the extent of the environmental impact assessment which must be included with the documents.

Cllr Gill Yeates, who chairs Bersted council's planning, amenities and environment committee, told her fellow councillors on Tuesday the details which would be submitted included the affect of the housing on traffic and the environment.

"THe list goes on and on. THere will be a lot of paperwork about this. But there is not a lot of input we can make on it at the moment," she said.

Cllr Martin Lury said the amount of homes which Arun could allow west of the River Arun was 'disproportionate'.

"It's totally unacceptable. If you think of the wildlife situation at Pagham, that will be lost forever. It's craziness," he said.

Cllr David Meagher said: "THere could be a conurbation from Selsey to Littlehampton and all the way to Chichester.

"We would all lose our identities. It is absolutely horrendous."

Day's revival will celebrate the best of country's armed forces A SALUTE to the work of the armed forces is being held in Bognor Regis.

Armed Forces Day has returned to the town after an absence of a year - and it promises to be as packed with interest and information as the previous stagings.

Committee chairman Sue Holmes said: "Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up our armed forces community, from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and our local cadets."

Sunday's free action for all the family will take place from 9.30am-5pm in the Waterloo Square/pier area.

THe Esplanade will be closed from West Street to Waterloo Square East,

including the western side of Waterloo Square, to provide plenty of space for exhibitions and displays, entertainment and the opening drumhead service. THe formality of the service at 10am will be followed by various displays from cadet groups, Scouts and Guides.

"THere will be a chance to see what they can do - and perhaps get involved," said Sue. "THere will also be a chance to talk to serving officers.

"In the marquee in Waterloo Square garden, there will be tombolas, raffles, information stalls and displays."

Entertainment on the stage and Army Cadet KitKar displays in front of the pier will provide further interest to visitors.

Eyesore's owner is fined for failing to improve building

LEGAL action has left the owner of an eyesore in Yapton with a bill of more than £1,000.

by Arun District Council for failing to comply with a notice it had served him to improve the condition of the building.

He was summoned to appear at Horsham Magistrates' Court on Monday where he pleaded not guilty to the charge under the Town & Country Planning Act. But he was found guilty after a short trial and fined £265 with an extra £30 victim surcharge. Arun was also awarded full costs of £849.99.

THe court case follows a lengthy process of communication and failure to meet conditions set by the council with regard to the property, called THe

Gates, in North End Road.

THe planning compliance team at the council first contacted Mr Quince in 2011. Officers spent several hours working with him to try to ensure the necessary work was done voluntarily.

When it became clear no work had been undertaken or was planned, Mr Quince was issued with a notice under

Section 2015 of the Act on October 19, 2015.

THe notice required that improvements had to be made to the property by fully reinstating the roofs and windows to make it wind and watertight and to improve the negative visual impact the building was having on its surrounding area.

` Job figures boost THREE out of four working age adults in the Arun district have jobs, the latest figures have shown.

THe number of economically active men and women who work stayed at 75.4 per cent - or 71,100 Wednesday's statistics revealed.

THis equals last year's rate 72.4 per cent in the year to September, 2016, and 71.2 per cent in the previous year. THe latest jobless rate in the district is 3,300 or 4.4 per cent of the population who want to work.

Charlotte Rose, a work coach team leader at the Jobcentre Plus in Bognor Regis, said the town's jobs market was shifting away from the traditional summer employment.

"We have had a definite change in our labour market over the past few years. THe seasonality of work has changed. We are seeing more fulltime and permanent work, which is good.

"THe make-up of our labour market has shifted a little bit.

Overall, it's quite a positive picture."

But vacancies in some sectors were proving hard to fill month after month, Ms Rose said.

"THere is a huge demand for carers and workers in hospitality.

It is a real struggle to fill those types of roles. THere is definitely an availability of work in those areas.

THe increasing number of workers in the Arun district reflects the national situation, in the statistics released by the Department of Work and Pensions.

THis showed the employment rate at a joint record high of 74.8 per cent. THe number of those out of work is at its lowest since 1975.

Popular prostate tests AT LEAST 100 men have taken part in a potentially life-saving test in Bognor Regis.

THe turnout for the town's first public prostate cancer test pleased its organisers at the town's two Rotary clubs.

Planning for the event began after Nigel Hasted, the immediate past president of Bognor Hotham Rotary Club, lost a friend two years ago from the disease.

"When I was president of the club last year, I decided prostate cancer was going to be my charity of the year and we raised £2,000 for Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO).

"THe charity then asked if we would like to put on one of these events. We joined together with the other Rotary club in the town to stage it."

A total of 90 men pre-booked for the blood test and a further ten turned up last Saturday in the first two hours of the six hour session.

"THe event is a success," said Nigel. "We would have liked more but we are happy with the numbers turning up. If just one man finds out he has cancer

because of this, and can begin treatment, it makes it all worthwhile."

THe blood samples are being tested at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester for the results to be sent to the men in the next few days.

THe samples are being tested for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). A moderately raised reading can be a sign of a prostate problem. A high reading should trigger further tests to find out if treatment is needed.

One in every two men will have a problem with their prostate - either infection, enlargement or cancer. Of every eight men, one will develop prostate cancer.

PCaSO chairman Roger Bacon said: "We hold these events regularly. THey are important in raising awareness of prostate cancer and helping to alert men to possible dangers at an early stage."

Town centre resident Terry Pratt, 73, pictured below with phlebotomist Andrea Birkett, was among those who went along. "I'm not aware of having any prostate problems and it's amazing the number of people here to make you aware of having your prostate checked," he said.

Flood scheme wait goes on CAMPAIGNERS battling to save Pagham from flooding face a race against time to complete their work this year.

THe residents' group is still waiting for the final approval of its £450,000 scheme from the government.

"But, due to the complexity of our application and the likelihood that it will need signing off at ministerial level, when the government is up and functioning, we are expecting them to extend this time-scale. My guess is that it will not be this month."

Regular contact was being made with the case officer at the Department for Communities and Local Government for the latest news. But even approval in the next few days would leave the trust with only a short time to start work, he told the trust's annual meeting last THursday.

"We have a window of opportunity between September and October each year between the end of the summer nesting season and the arrival of the overwintering birds and a smaller window in March and April. But the weather and tides are not so good then," he said.

"So, if we get approval next month, that will give us just 40 days before the overwintering birds start to arrive when we have to start the work.

"THere will be 14 planning conditions that will need to be fulfilled and completed before the work is started.

"THat can be done but it is a lot of work and we need to raise all the funds."

THe trust has formed a not-for-profit business arm, called a community interest company, to enable it to place orders for the project to go ahead and to spend the donations made by residents and community groups.

THe scheme involves cutting a channel through the Church Norton Spit which has grown off the Pagham Harbour entrance and forced the tides on to the beach to scour away 40-50m of shingle each year for the past decade, as shown above in a picture from the trust.

THe spit is continually evolving and the final extent of the work will not be known until the site is surveyed just ahead of the arrival of the contractors.

THe application for the work was submitted by Pagham Parish Council, which started the project, in September 2015. It was supported by Arun District Council this spring after a donation from an unnamed benefactor enabled the trust to prove it could pay for any remedial works needed in the first five years.

But the latest figures given to the meeting show a shortfall of some £50,000 before the scheme can start.

Mr Henderson said it was vital the work was carried out in spite of recent changes which had carved the spit into two.

"Nature is still in charge. Wherever the shingle goes, it will then try to bring the water around," he added.

"THe whole basis of everything we have done is to work with nature and with the various agencies to deliver the outcome we want - to give a long-term future for Pagham, improve the defences and make it a great place to live in and visit."

Town council projects officer Sheila Hodgson arranged the event.

"We have begun a community engagement committee, with a public forum, but not everyone wants to come to a council committee or is able to get along in the evening."

It was also important to speak to visitors to find out their views about the town, she added.

THe next open air surgery will be at the precinct's northern end from 10am to midday on July 13. Other locations will be used if the initial success continues.

New hotel plans A FOURTH hotel is being considered by bosses at Butlin's in Bognor Regis.

Resort director Jeremy Pardey told residents and parish councillors at a recent meeting the extra accommodation was being looked at by the holiday company.

Felpham Parish Council member Cllr Graham Matthews was among those present at the liaison session to talk about building work on the holiday site's new swimming centre.

"At the end of the meeting, Mr Pardey mentioned there were looking at putting a new hotel where the current splash pool is," Cllr Matthews told last Tuesday's meeting.

A FIRST open air surgery by Bognor Regis town councillors proved popular.

Some 50 people took the chance to state their views in the first 90 minutes of the two-hour session on Tuesday.

THe afternoon event at the London Road precinct's southern end saw at least four town council members at a time present to speak to residents and visitors while they were shopping.

One of them, Cllr Martin Smith (LD, Hotham) said: "It has gone very well.

We've had a lot of positive comments about the town.

"People say they love the way we run things, they love the events we are currently staging and they love the seafront. THe only complaint I've had is about the seagulls, but there isn't anything we can do about them."

His fellow councillor, Martin Lineham (UKIP, Marine) said: "THe whole idea of this event is for us to meet the public, rather than to wait for the public to

Top cop faces security quiz

Officers have appealed for the public's help in tracing Terrance Winter, below. He is being sought for burglary and recall to prison.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "THe 44-year-old, of no fixed address, is suspected of committing a burglary at an address in Church Street in West Chiltington on the evening of last THursday.

"He is also wanted on recall to prison, having allegedly committed a further offence and displayed poor behaviour on release.

"He was originally jailed for robbery in July, 2014, and sentenced to four years and three months."

He described Winter as white, about 6ft tall, of proportionate build, with short grey hair and blue eyes. Anyone with information of his whereabouts is asked to report it online at: sussex.police.uk/ appealresponse or call 101, quoting serial 1673 of 08/06.

GIVING up sweets has enabled a 12-year-old girl to donate nearly £400 to help others.

Amelia-Rose Cox gave the tasty treats a miss for six weeks to raise as much money as possible for the Aldingbourne Trust's work with people with a learning disability.

Her shunning of her much-loved chocolate and other sugary snacks saw her raise £375, including Gift Aid, for the trust with the support of her family and friends.

She said: "I don't think anyone with a learning disability should lead a different life to me.

"THey want to have a fun life, do what they want to do and just be happy.

"THey are fantastic people and I want to give something back for all the good times I have shared with them."

Amelia-Rose recently presented her cheque to the team of adults working at the trust's Aldingbourne Country Centre north of the A27 on the day she visited.

One of them said: "Amelia-Rose is so kind to do this for us and it must have been hard for her to give up sweets - so thank you."

She donated her money earlier this month after the success of her challenge to go without sweets throughout Lent in the build-up to Easter.

THe trust is building a £4m community centre to become an oasis of excellence in social care in Europe.

CHIEF CONSTABLE Giles York is to be questioned about security measures in Sussex.

THe county's most senior officer is being quizzed by the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Manchester and London.

Katy Bourne will also be asking him about his progress on recruiting 52 extra armed response officers in Sussex and Surrey following the increase to the policing part of residents' council tax in the current year.

Mrs Bourne said: "I want to know how confident the Chief Constable is that the force remains well placed in its preparation and plans to respond if there were a similar attack in Sussex."

But she said she was also keen to ensure the police were also focused on matters which concerned neighbourhoods.

"With summer now upon us, concerns have been raised by residents, communities and businesses of an increased potential for street drinking and other associated anti-social behaviour in town centres and public spaces," she said.

"I will be asking what powers are available to Sussex Police to tackle street drinking and how these are prioritised and enforced by the force, as well as how officers are working with partners to tackle street drinking."

Her performance and accountability meeting with the Chief Constable starts

at 1pm today.

Other topics under discussion will include an update on Operation Dragonfly, Sussex Police's drink-anddrug drive campaign this month.

THis will feature the total number of drivers breathalysed or tested for substances and then arrested.

Mrs Bourne will also be seeking facts about out-of-court disposals - powers given to the police to provide on-thespot sanctions to low-level crime and anti-social behaviour.

Town carnival entries had the whole wide world in their hands WORLD champions at South Bersted CoE School have achieved a hat-trick of successes.

THe pupils, staff and governors claimed the best in class trophy at Bognor Regis Carnival for the third year in a row.

THeir montage of the globe caught the eye of the judges from the Bognor Regis Carnival Association.

Headteacher Chris Kronda was Jules Verne with a hot air balloon on its float.

THe Leaning Tour of Pisa, dolphins and coral reefs were also featured, along with flags from every country. THe planet's continents and the solar system were also on view. All the 207 pupils had a hand in creating the triumphant display.

Mr Kronda said the entry had proved to be a lesson as well as a lot of fun.

"It feels brilliant to have won this trophy for three years in a row. Every child has helped out with this float. It's been a real community effort.

"THe children have been learning information about the world as they have worked on the display. THey enjoy doing it and we will definitely be back next year to defend our title again."

Last Saturday's carnival was the third to be held by the association after it revived the popular event in 2015.

It attracted nearly 40 entries to match last year's procession. A slightly longer route saw them leave from THe Esplanade and travel to West Park along Aldwick Road, Park Road and Marine Drive West to the West Park.

THe parade included six floats. As well as South Bersted School, they were created by Bognor Regis and District Scouts, Bognor Regis Swimming Club,

the Laburnum Centre and Gym, THe Regis Centre and Arun Aikido Club.

THey conveyed the glories of the globe in a mass of bright colours and creativity in line with its theme of Around the World to the delight of the thousands of spectators who lined the route in the warm sunshine.

THe Scouts won top prize for the best juvenile entry. THeir carnival coordinator, Tim Holland, said: "It's not all about winning but it is good to have a bit of a competitive edge. THis has been very much a team effort. It has involved a wide selection of multi-cultural diversity."

THis was shown by the association's ÂŁ15 prize for the hardest work put in by a child being won by Reece Chapman for his complete Filippo costume.

"THere were probably 100 children and 20-30 leaders involved with our float," he said.

"It's a showcase for us. We tell the children it's worth the effort because it shows people what Scouting is all about.

"THey can see the work that has been put in, and the children and adults enjoying themselves, and they might think that joining Scouting is for them."

Walking entries between the floats included Girlguiding, the town's RAFA Club, the Salvation Army, the RT Family, Sussex Army Cadets and the Kyushin Ryu Ju Association.

Music came from Ringwood Pipe Band, THe Wonder Girls and THe Regis Troopers dance troupes, TS Sturdy and Sussex Steel.

THose spectators who followed the parade could enjoy several dozen stalls around the carnival showground at West

Park. Plenty of food was available as well as information from community groups.

A series of arena events was also held for three hours to provide further interest. THey were staged by Hawking About, Ringwood Pipe Band, Sussex Army Cadets with their KitKar display and THe Wonder Girls.

Bognor Regis Town Mayor Cllr Phil Woodall, who is also the association's treasurer, officially opened the showground. He said: "THe carnival is put on by a very small committee.

"THis year's parade has been very successful and was well supported along the route.

"THe entries have been of a very high standard and I know a lot of hard work has gone into them. My congratulations to everyone concerned for making this event possible."

` Summer festival A MONTH of Mendelssohn is set to delight audiences at the Regis School of Music's latest summer festival.

THe composer's music - and that of his fellow high romantics - is taking centre stage at the Bognor Regis event. It was launched last Friday and the first concert at the Sudley Road venue will be given by renowned English pianist Julian Jacobson at 7.30pm tomorrow.

by Mariko Brown in a programme which will also include works by Beethoven and Prokofiev.

Next Friday will see Anthony Lindsey give a talk about Mendelssohn and the High Romantics at 10.30am.

Festival organiser Sasha Levtov said: "THis is our 19th festival. We are looking forward to welcoming some world-class musicians to Bognor Regis as well as giving our students - and others from the area - the chance to perform on our concert piano in our recital hall.

"THe festival is a highlight of our year and I hope we will get a few hundred people at each concert."

THe festival continues unil July 8 with a weekend competition on July 1 and 2 for junior and senior amateur musicians, instrumentalists and singers in various age categories and abilities.

July 2 sees former piano student Imy Luc return from Cheetham's School of Music in Manchester with the Alegria Piano Trio. THis will be followed on July 5 with a new event when the school's students play music illustrated by their pictures.

A gala ends the festival on July 8.

FIFTY years of training dogs and their owners were celebrated by a Bognor Regis group.

THe latest annual companion dog show staged by Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club proved to be a popular and successful way to mark the anniversary.

Club press officer Phil Lewis said: "THis was the first show under the direction of new show secretary Alison Formaggia.

"Superb weather attracted a very large crowd with a wide variety of entries. Some came from as far afield as Brighton, Southampton, Eastbourne and the New Forest and, of course, it was very well supported by local entries."

Rhodesian Ridgebacks owned by Jane Hawkins, from Gosport, did the double.

Oz won the Best in Show Trophy and Neo, aged seven months, took the best puppy prize.

Following the success of last year's introduction of a training ring, this year's show continued with the same format of having only three classes for obedience.

THey were again contested to a high standard. Mr Lewis said: "THe novelty classes are always popular but this year had an even bigger entry than usual.

"Once again, fun is very high on the agenda, which makes for an enjoyable afternoon for both dogs and owners."

THere were nine successful candidates that passed the Kennel Club good citizen bronze award.

Pole positions on show from top dancers DOZENS of pole dancers from around the country showed their skills in North Bersted.

THe talents of the men and women made the return of the Miss Pole Dance UK amateur and semi-pro championships a huge success.

It was the second year the event had been staged at Bersted Park Community Centre and expanded to fill all last weekend after the 2016 inaugural event.

THe second day on Sunday saw the new group category won by Gotham City Sirens from Nottingham.

THe trio of Justina Justin, Samantha Turner and Sara McKenzie clinched first place and also won the prizes as the best entertainers and for the best tricks.

THe friends entered for some fun, rather than to win a title.

Justina said: "THere were originally four of us but, unfortunately, we lost one of our group so we literally put this together in one week."

THe girls have been pole dancing for between two and four years. Justina and Samantha are instructors.

"We didn't expect to even get placed, let alone win," said Samantha. "THis is incredible. We will definitely keep training and who knows where we will go next."

Six groups took part. THe high standard

was set by the first act - Dawson's Divas, from Shoreham-by-Sea, who picked up the prize for best costume.

THe championships began with displays by the amateur dancers.

THey set the scene for the two days of competition with a series of displays to give the audience a taster for things to come.

Next to take to the stage were the semi-pro students followed by the doubles and the semi-pro instructors.

Guest performances on the day included the female doubles act, Jalana, and Mr Pole Fitness champion 2016, Sam King, before Mr Pole Fitness amateur and semi-pro competitors ended the action for the day.

THe annual competition was started in 2005 by Kay Penney. She said she was delighted with the latest staging.

"THis weekend has been yet another huge success. THis year we introduced the groups category, which proved to be a massive hit. I would like to announce that next year we are also planning to introduce a juniors category to the show, which will be hugely exciting," she added.

THe category winners were invited to attend the bigger professional competition of Miss Pole Dance and Mr Pole Fitness UK in Crawley in October.

A LEADING veterinary practice has confirmed the opening of its new premises in Westergate.

Arun Veterinary Group is inviting the public to join its staff at the Nyton Road premises from midday4pm on June 24 to look round the new facilities and meet the team before the practice officially starts on June 26.

To add to the celebrations, the group is hosting an online Best in Show competition. Entry is open to pets of all species.

MP says new type of politics is required NICK GIBB marked 20 years of being elected as the MP for Bognor Regis with another win at the ballot box.

He returned to Parliament this week to resume his seat as the town's Conservative MP after another resounding triumph.

His majority of nearly 17,500 was well above the 13,064 margin at the previous election two years ago.

It was his sixth consecutive successful campaign in the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton constituency. THe result also delivered his biggest share of the vote at almost 60 per cent in spite of having five opponents.

But he said the mixed national picture at a time when the country needed a strong government showed a new form of politics was required.

"People want more from politics.

Too many people feel they have been left behind and governments of all parties have let them down.

"We do have to start doing politics differently, promising what

can be delivered and delivering what is possible. We need to listen more and be clear about what can be done and clear about what we believe," he said.

"What I am clear about is that the Conservative party's policies of freedom under the rule of law and its commitment to free enterprise is essential to the future of the wealth and prosperity we need to fund our public services.

"Our vision is of a country where everyone can make the best of their talents and achieve their chosen ambitions with

hard work."

But Mr Gibb, who has continued in his government role as the school standards minister, said his personal success was marred by the national situation where the Conservatives had been pegged back by Labour.

"It looks like this is going to be a less successful night for the Conservative party than we had hoped.

"At a time when the country is facing great challenges and dangers, it appears that Britain may not have a government with a clear majority that we had hoped for and that I believe the country needs.

"In the next few days, I hope it will be possible to form a Conservative government which will set about continuing the task of addressing the challenges the nation faces and to deliver the decision the British people made last June to leave the EU," he said.

THe result was declared by acting returning officer Nigel Lynn around 3.15am on Friday, just over five hours after voting had ended.

THe speed of the vote counting in the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham was in spite of the turnout of 67.85 per cent of the 72,827 electorate being the highest since the first election in the constituency in 1997.

Labour's delight LABOUR'S Alan Butcher almost doubled his share of the vote in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Mr Butcher was delighted by his result in the latest general election. His 12,782 votes returned his party to second place in the constituency for the first time in 16 years.

He picked up almost 25 per cent of the votes compared with just under 14 per cent in 2015 when Labour were third behind Nick Gibb and UKIP. Mr Butcher said: "We had a lot of positive feedback. We have had a fair amount of success over the years but it has been a difficult time recently.

"It is clear our share of the votes has gone up as that for UKIP has dropped very significantly.

THere are areas where we have done well.

"We have never entirely gone away and this result shows we are now back to being the second party in this constituency.

"THere are a lot of Labour voters out there and people who are inclined to vote towards Labour.

Our job is to ensure that is something they feel they want to follow through.

"We want to make people believe that, if they want to come out and vote, then they will get a Labour representative.

"I believe this has been an unnecessary general election but we put forward a positive campaign of very different policies. THis is just the start. I think Labour is now in a position to go ahead with that new form of politics.

"I think the Lib Dems paid the price last time for going into government with the Conservatives in 2010 and I believe that is still continuing this time."

For the Liberal Democrats, Francis Oppler saw his standing improve from fourth in 2015 to third. But his number of votes declined from 4,240 to 3,352. He said: "THe Lib Dems are still fighting back. We have made some gains in the country but, perhaps, it was not the night we would have liked.

"THe Lib Dems still have an important part to play in terms of our country. Our campaigning on the 'dementia tax', social funding and the NHS brought a good response.

"But what we have seen is a national picture of a battle between the two big parties and the smaller parties have been the victim of a squeeze. However, we have made progress to get into third place. It's only modest progress, but it is progress all the same.

"We did well in the county council elections last month across the Arun district but tonight has seen Labour benefit quite significantly from the collapse of UKIP." UKIP's Andrew Lowe saw his party's share of the vote drop by almost 20 per cent. He said: "Our campaign went well but, clearly, this election has all been about Brexit and that's reflected nationally. THe country has polarised between Labour and the Conservatives and we have seen that division here.

"It's disappointing because we came second last time. But we have not gone away and had some positive ideas. We will continue working with local residents and I am sure the next election will be completely different."

Independent Paul Sanderson picked up a healthy number of votes in his first campaign.

He said: "It has been a brilliant campaign. I set out to be a politician in the community and I put the smiles on people's faces.

"Six weeks ago, I didn't have a clue about doing this and I only started my campaign five weeks ago. A lot of young people were involved in my campaign, some too young to vote. THe result might have been disappointing but I have galvanised people and that's positive."

Andrew Bishop for the Green Party came last as his party's votes almost halved. He said: "THe green message has gone mainstream and Labour have put forward many of our policies. We're happy with that and people are responding to it."

Residents' group is going strong at 50 f Rosemary Warren accepts the cheque

Tots give money to park's helpers IMPROVEMENTS could be on their way to an area of Hotham Park in Bognor Regis.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust is looking at ways to make the Discovery Garden better.

Its volunteers have been helped in their work by a £500 donation from Releasing Potential. It runs Forest School Tots, which meets on Tuesday mornings, weather permitting, in the garden. Young children can play and explore the woodland environment and listen to a story.

Rosemary Warren, the trust's chairman, said: "THe trust are working with Releasing Potential to provide better facilities in the Discovery

Garden for the children to enjoy."

THe trust has funded a series of improvements to the park since its formation in 1998.

THis has included £18,000 towards the children's playground, £6,700 to help the restoration of Hotham Park House's clocktower and several thousand pounds for the Mad Hatter's Tea Party wooden sculpture unveiled last Easter.

A HALF-CENTURY of help has been celebrated by a Pagham group.

Pagham and District Residents' Association marked the golden jubilee with a musical soiree for its annual cream tea. Last Saturday's occasion in Pagham Village Hall was attended by 89 members.

THey were entertained by master of ceremonies Alison Blenkinsopp and two friends with music from the past 50 years.

Much was in the style of famed comedy writer and singer Joyce Grenfell.

Association chairman Ann Rowles said it had been a fitting celebration. "It was a really good afternoon, with lovely food of

cream scones, sandwiches and cakes and good entertainment," she said.

THe association's formation dates back to 1964. A group of residents were unhappy with the running of the then parish council. THis prompted them to form a group to raise their concerns.

THree years later, their activities led to the residents' association. THey bought their first minibus another three years afterwards to take members shopping.

THe association's latest minibus to carry on the regular runs to stores like Morrisons, Matalan and M&S is due to arrive this month at a cost of nearly

£40,000.

"We have about 2,000 households as members," said Ann. "We have tried to continue the association as its original members ran it, though we are not political these days."

Fortnightly coffee mornings attract 6080 members, a coach trip to Southampton Water was enjoyed by 53 members and the same number will go to Highclere Castle in Berkshire soon.

Ladies' supper evenings each month attract 16-30 diners a time and weekly rambles across the South Downs are popular as well.

Bacchus to the future wines best left to age Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

DELAYED gratification, in this modern age, may well seem an alien concept to some, but in the realm of fine wine is essential for maximising the taste experience!

THus M&S have ventured into the en primeur Bordeaux market of 2014 - offering in-store a selection of the 32 wines on offer starting with the ever-reliable Château Potensac. THis is a wine I have always purchased as it is owned by the renowned Delon family, who own both Léoville Las Cases in St. Julien and Château Nenin in Pomerol, and the vines on the top of the Potensac plateau in Northern Médoc are on average 40 years of age, adding to the inherent quality of a truly fine winemaker.

It is all the more an opportune time to purchase as M&S have extended their 25 per cent off six bottles or more offer to at least the end of June, so this fine wine can be bought for just £19.50 and is one worth storing for circa two years at least to appreciate its inherent quality!

Another favourite wine of mine was a dear old Château Chauvin St Émilion at an offer price of just £22.50. THe year 2014 was a significant one for this ancient wine, dating from 1500, as ownership thereof

passed from the Ondet family to Sylvie Cases and her offspring and she remains one of the owners of prestigious Château Lynch Bages in Pauillac.

THe vines are a healthy 30 years of age and this wine has red berries to the fore and is smooth and eminently drinkable in, say, two years. THe 2015 version has a new label and will probably surpass the 2014 version in terms of softness and finish. At a reduced offer price of £22.50 , the Chevalier de Lascombes 2014 Margaux is the second wine of Château Lascombes, but has undeniable charm, is dark purple red with violet hue and has ripe fruit with a balmy spiciness and delightfully wellstructured tannins and is drinkable now, but will improve with further ageing!

THe 2014 Château D'Angludet Margaux is, in fact, an English-owned château and for under £30 is medium-bodied with red berries to the fore and is one you can drink while it is relatively young! Silky smooth and eminently quaffable, I commend this wine to you and also was excited to see a Château Chasse-Spleen of 2014 vintage for an offer price of just over £32.

THis is an elegant fine wine with a wellexpressed cassis nose and a good finish.

Lively black fruit characterises this wine alongside graphite and sous-bois and one to purchase, keep for a few years and then enjoy.

Averting my attention from fine wines to store, I will now focus on wines for the here and now and ones ripe for consumption!

Two wines at an offer price of just over £6 from the Domaine Mandeville caught my

eye and the Viognier Pays D'Oc crafted by Olivier Mandeville who, incidentally, was one of the first producers to plant Viognier in the Languedoc region of La Belle France proved to be beautifully soft and rounded with predominantly peach and possibly apricot to the fore and with a slight spritz. Great as an apéritif and pleasingly refreshing, it is also a good stand-alone wine. A Viognier that pleases, teases and leaves you with welcome change in your pocket.

THe Sauvignon Blanc, similarly priced, from the Domaine Mandeville was very citrussy, light and flavoursome and, if you

like your wine zesty and big in the mouth, this wine might float your boat.

A Tasmanian wine then came to my notice in the form of a Pure South 2015 Sauvignon Blanc which utterly failed to disappoint at an offer price of £9 and turned out to be well crafted, beautifully balanced and bursting with tropical fruit flavours - a veritable delight and maybe

INGREDIENTS • 5 garlic cloves • Small bunch fresh oregano, leaves picked • Finely grated zest 2 large unwaxed lemons • 1 tsp sea salt • 6 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • ½ British lamb leg, boned and butterflied For the salad • 2 bunches fresh soft herbs such as basil, tarragon, mint and coriander, or a mix of what you fancy • 50g wild rocket • Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil • Squeeze lemon juice • 200g Dorstone goat’s cheese or similar ashrinded goat’s cheese

Method 1. Make a marinade by crushing the garlic, oregano, lemon zest and salt to a rough paste with 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a pestle and mortar. Add the rest of the oil and mix well.

2. Prick the lamb all over with the point of a small, sharp knife, then rub with the marinade.

Put in a sealable plastic food bag, squeezing

out any air, then leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 3 hours, or overnight if you can, making sure the lamb is kept flat so the marinade can coat it evenly.

3. Bring the lamb up to room temperature – it will take around 2-3 hours to lose the chill – then transfer to a metal baking tray.

4. Heat the grill to very high (240°C) and cook the lamb for 15 minutes on each side, then rest it for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile make the salad.

Put the herbs and rocket in a bowl with the extra-virgin olive oil and the lemon juice.

Toss, then season to taste.

5. When the lamb has rested, lift it onto a large chopping board, slice thickly and scatter with the herb salad. Crumble over the goat’s cheese, then serve.

The brilliant benefits of bone broth BONE broth is simple, it’s timeless, and it’s where we can go when we want to get back to the basics.

Bone broth is easier to make than you might think, and it has healing properties that go deeper than you may imagine.

Bones represent the structure of the universe. When we feel we know the truth, we feel it deep in our bones.

In my eyes, bone broth is grounding and nourishing, and while all of this sounds wonderful, there is also some science behind it to show us the benefits that our bodies can feel with each sip.

Homemade bone broth is one of the most powerful super foods on the planet. It’s made by simmering the bones of animal for 10–24 hours in a slow-cooker or pan.

THis slow cooking draws out the collagen, marrow, and other healing elements from the bones, including amino acids, minerals, glycine, and gelatin, which helps our health in so many ways. Bone broth has been a health choice for years, apparently increasing vitality and energy and age becomes merely a number when you have good health.

THere are so many benefits, I hardly know where to begin. THe immune system can benefit massively from bone broth. THe amino acids in bone broth, like arginine, glutamine, and cysteine, have been shown to boost immunity in both humans and animals.

THere’s a solid scientific reason that we reach for chicken soup when we have a cold or flu. Many studies have proved that chicken soup (bone broth) does indeed aid in alleviating symptoms of the common cold, by clearing mucus, opening respiratory

Community News & Views A PASSION for peppers made for an interesting visit for members of the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham.

THey spent hours touring one of the Europe's largest pepper nurseries to find out more about the specialist crop.

THeir eye-opening experience at Tangmere Airfield Nurseries enable them to find out how the fruit is grown and ends up on supermarket shelves.

THe nursery has nearly 75 acres of sweet peppers - all hydrophonically grown in climate-controlled glasshouses.

It has 30 hectares, equal to 60 football pitches, of the most modern glasshouse and packing facilities in the UK. Brian Clarke, the club's press officer, said: "THe entire visit was truly an eye-opener to passion and modern production methods and, for Bognor Hotham Rotary members normally concerned with such events as the Bognor 10k road race and the Christmas Float, was a truly interesting experience.

"With modern production methods, no soil is actually used.

Temperatures and nutrients are controlled automatically but picking is done carefully by hand, which suggests that humans are still useful.

"THe scale of the enterprise is enormous and the Tangmere site alone produces 65 million peppers annually."

Tangmere Airfield Nurseries was established in 1988 and is situated on the celebrated Battle of Britain Airfield where famous RAF pilot Douglas Bader was stationed for a time.

In 2001, the company acquired a site in Spain to allow it to supply its customers all year round.

THe Rotarians, pictured below in one of the greenhouses, were guided round the site by the company's production manager, Bob Horn, as well as its PR and marketing manager, Zoe Smith.

Of particular interest was Bob's explanation of how the nursery produces power from water 200 feet underground as it makes its way from the South Downs to the sea.

THis minimises the company's impact on the environment and even generates electricity for 10,500 homes in the area. In addition, all waste products are recycled.

Bob also showed club members how the plants are grown, how the nursery deals with harmful aphids and how the fruit is picked.

THe visit was one of the regular outings which the Rotary Club arranges on the fifth Tuesday of a month to places which are of interest and benefit the local community.

FIRE crews have visited schools around West Sussex to spread the word about fire safety education.

THey spoke to young people about how to stay safe in home, at school and outdoors by raising awareness of accidents and how to avoid them.

Angela Spencer-Smith, the schools education officer for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "THe fire service is here to keep people safe but we don't just like to respond when things go wrong. We also do a huge amount of work to try to prevent accidents from happening in the first place.

"We want every child in West Sussex to understand the dangers of fire and to know what to do should a fire break out."

THe visits took place during last week's child safety week organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust.

THe fire and rescue service's top safety tips include keeping lighters and matches out of children's reach and never leaving children alone in a kitchen.

Many of the pieces played by Rossini Bartolotti-Hayward, pictured centre above, were arranged by him.

Julie Insull, of the club, said: "Much appreciation was shown by the audience of this amazing guitarist which prompted Rossini to play a piece he had written appropriately entitled Encore 2017. He followed his recital by mingling with the audience and signing programmes."

THe first half finished with Sonata Op no 1, by Corelli, in which Rossini somehow made his guitar sound like a trio of two violins and a cello.

THe second half began with Couperin's Les Barricades Mysterieuses, a beautiful piece followed by two pieces by the Prussian composer, Mertz - An Malvina and Fingals Hohle.

Next was Schubert's Ave Maria, which Rossini had arranged as a very emotional piece with superb tremolo sections. THe formal concert finished with three pieces by Gaspar Sanz.

A NEW book of insightful interviews charting West Sussex residents’ military service throughout the 20th century is now available across the county.

Military Voices Past and Present is a collection of memories from local veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars and more recent conflicts. THe stories have been published in a 550-page book and also released as digital audio recordings.

THe project began with 32 First World War veteran interviews made in the 1980s by Worthing history teacher Peter Baker.

He deposited the interviews at West Sussex Record Office in 2014 to make sure they were preserved as a vital part of social history.

Inspired by his work, staff and volunteers from West Sussex County Council's library service embarked on a project to build on this collection. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Armed Forces Covenant Fund, they interviewed a further 63 local veterans from the period 1939 to the 1990s.

THese interviews describe training, fellow servicemen, front line action, how service affected them as individuals. Included are female veterans such as nurses and a Bletchley Park codebreaker.

Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “People who signed up and gave service whether in the First, Second World Wars or any other conflicts right up to Afghanistan have done so to protect our country for democracy and freedom of speech.

“Many gave their lives, others have received significant injuries and traumas that have stayed with them throughout their lives. THe Military Voices project is one small way to thank all those alive and passed on who have given service to their Country to protect our freedom. A fitting tribute to so many heroic men and women.”

A limited print run of the book is on sale for £10 from all West Sussex libraries and West Sussex Record Office in Orchard Street, Chichester. Lending copies can also be borrowed via any library.

THe full interviews can be listened to on public computers at all 36 West Sussex libraries. THere is also a special listening turret with over 130 of the audio clips at Worthing Library until July 13 and at Horsham Library from July 19 until August 31.

Sir, Two years ago, a young German family with their two boys where on a Whit-week trip in England. THe boys should see something of the country whose language they study at school.

On the way to Stonehenge, their camper was involved in a road accident at Westergate Roundabout, A27, on the way to Chichester (May 28,2015, around 12.30).

THis accident was observed exactly by the drivers of a car following the camper with German registration. THey offered to act as witnesses and that's exactly what the German family needs now, to clear the facts of this accident.

It's about two years ago and really not actual, but to clear the facts, it could be interesting being published in a short story. It would help the German family when these witnesses could be found.

I add a photo of our daughter and her husband with one of the two boys, pictured above, to jog the memories of the witnesses.

Visitors have long made tracks for mini trains

f QUICK

Miniature railways have been a feature of the town for more than a century HAVE you been down to the seafront recently?

If so, you will have seen the miniature trains that are run by the Whittington family covering the area from Butlin’s to Marine Park Gardens.

Seeing these trains carrying their happy passengers reminds me to question how many other miniature trains there have been in the town over the years.

THe earliest record I can find is from 1909 when there was a model train operating just for one season. It ran on the seafront on the site of the Kursaal, now THe Regis. Robert Briggs, whose son can be seen driving the train, pictured bottom, made it in Harpenden in Hertfordshire. It was apparently constructed with great attention to detail being just 2ins scale and resembling the trains of the Great Northern Railway.

It was named Winnie after Robert Briggs’ youngest daughter. THe train was run on domestic coal obtained from the Maginnis coal merchants in Belmont Street, while the required water was obtained from the recently erected Arcade.

Following its removal from the seafront, Briggs took the engine to his back garden and provided much-enjoyed rides for the local children. Eventually, it was owned by the Chichester and Bognor Regis Society of Model

Engineers, and can still be see in Chichester at the miniature railway annual open day.

Hotham Park has its own history of a small children’s railway. THere are some reports that, as far back as 1934, there were tracks laid in the park by the Territorial Army, but this has never been confirmed. THe first specific proposals were in the 1960s but these were turned down several times, but eventually in 1969 things changed - although even then it was not a foregone conclusion.

At one council meeting in the Sixties one of the councillors remarked: “THe park is a unique area and it would be a great pity to put a railway in there.” He then continued: “I’m not sure that railways have the appeal that we perhaps think they have!”

Another councillor, in 1966, remarked that the “peace of Hotham Park’s tree-shaded walks will never be disturbed by the hiss and rattle of a miniature railway or shattered by its whistle.”

THankfully, these views did not win the day.

Ian Allan, the renowned railway author and publisher, headed the successful tender with his Miniature Railway Suppliers Company.

Finally, the track in the park was laid in 1970 but, sadly, not to the original plan. THere was to have been a railway with three stations, which would allow people to board the train near the

coach park in London Road and travel through the park, via a tunnel, to alight near the end of Gloucester Road. However, there is still a very popular train service operating today, taking its passengers on its eight-minute circular route through the trees and around the park, where passengers can view a wide variety of trees and see the squirrels, rabbits, doves and other birds.

For a time, this railway was known as the Woodland Miniature Railway and in 1995 commemorative badges were available for the 25 years of its operation.

Around the time of the discussions regarding the Hotham Park train in 1969, Ian Allan’s new company, namely Rent-a-train, had already been running on the seafront. It operated on a piece of land where today we have Mountbatten Court. THis particular site had been vacated by the demolished Beaulieu Gardens. THis line operated for a number of years from 1968 until about 1973.

On the site where today we have Butlin’s there was also a miniature railway operating originally from 1948 to 1952, pictured above.

THis layout was under the direction of Sidney Briggs (no relation to Robert Briggs).

THeir station was situated near Gloucester Road and provided hours of fun for the visitors as they toured the Brookland site. One of his trains was built to 1ins scale and was modelled on the London Brighton & Southcoast Railway trains (LB&SCR). THe engine was named Remembrance and, for many years, was used to raise money for Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

THe Briggs family invested over £4,000 in setting up the railway, and also had a bright red engine named The Canadian Chief, based on a Canadian locomotive. THis engine was

eventually moved to the Midlands, where it operated on a private estate and was frequently featured on television programmes. When Sidney Briggs stopped operating this train it was taken over for a time by the Portsmouth Model Railway Group from 1953 for about five years.

THe pier had a miniature railway operating for a number of years from 1955 until part of the pier collapsed in 1964. THe track was originally opened by the pianist, Charlie Kunz, who at that time lived in Middleton-on-Sea. THe train was able to carry 40 passengers and, originally, it was operated by a concessionaire but was later taken over by the pier company.

THey had a wide variety of trains operating, including a LNER 462 Pacific-type replica and also a Donald Duck engine. THis track was to allow its passengers to travel from the landward end out the full length of the pier to the amusements and children’s playrooms at the seaward end pavilion, a total of nearly 1,000ft.

Last, but definitely not least, we have the trains along THe Esplanade. Today, they operate from a central point taking passengers on a circular tour from Butlin’s to the east and from the Waverley to the west. THese particular trains have been a feature of our seafront since 1978 and have always been operated by the Whittington family. THeir first train was named Thomas, after Ron and his wife went to Tenerife on holidays and found a miniature train with this name.

Ron was so taken with the name and lettering he took photos of his wife in front of the train. At night Ron could be found taking the dimensions of the lettering with her knitting tape to ensure that on their return the carpenter was able to reproduce the required nameplate for him.

Grade 2, priced from £13,885, supplements all this with 15-inch alloy wheels in place of

similar-sized steel wheels, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearshifter, electric windows at the rear as well as the front, electric folding mirrors with LED indicator lights, a digital DAB radio, a 5-inch colour display screen, a six-speaker audio system, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors, a 3.5-inch premium supervision cluster, rear as well as front USB charging ports, cruise control with a speed limiter and Autonomous Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning systems. THere is chrome trim around the black radiator grille, premium black cloth upholstery and a centre storage box.

Additional features on Grade 3, which starts at £16,435, include 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic air conditioning with a defogging system, black faux leather upholstery, a 7-inch display screen, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing front wipers, privacy glass on the rear side windows and tailgate, satellite navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and Bluetooth with voice recognition.

Finally, the First Edition version adds 17inch alloys, a smart key entry system and engine start/stop button, stainless steel pedals, black and red faux leather upholstery and LED rear lights.

They offer a door-to-door service for essential journeys to hospital, The Medical Centre, Dentists, Opticians and other medical needs. Where they have spare capacity, they will also take members to visit relatives in hospital. Volunteer drivers and escorts are always needed for this service.

PostSport Chi target further improvement as Winchester hosts next athletics meet CHICHESTER return to athletics action this weekend with a strong side looking to build on a positive start to the season.

THe senior sides will take part in the third leg of the Southern Athletics League in Winchester tomorrow (Saturday).

THen, on Sunday, the under-15 and under 13 sides will take part in the National Youth Development League.

THe senior teams, which also include under17s and under-20s levels, know they will be in for a hard battle with all their other five opponents of recognised national standard.

In addition to Winchester and Bournemouth, who were in the division last year, the league has seen the addition of City of Portsmouth and Southampton AC, as well as Brighton & Hove, to make it the strongest league in the south outside London.

But hopes will be high that Chi can do as they did in the opening fixture at Portsmouth and keep in touch with the rest of the teams.

THere, the team of 25 were well clear of Bournemouth and kept touch with Winchester in fourth all the way.

In Portsmouth, the 15 athletes in the men’s squad showed their strength on the track with

a few outright victories.

Will Broom and Brodie Keates continued their early season fine form over 800m and 1500m, as did sprinters Isaac Kilroy, Brandon Bell and Lewis Hall.

On the women's side, it was Chichester’s sprinters who dominated the women’s track programme, with Alyssa White clear winner of both the 100m and 200m. Rachel Laurie also tackled the 300m to good effect and was not put off by having to face UK number 1 Amber Anning from Brighton in her race.

Amelia Freeman was fluent over the hurdles and recorded a solid long jump, with Amber Dodd equally effective in the triple jump.

Lauren Cooper joined with Lucie Munday in the throws in discus and javelin to give the squad a well-balanced look over the programme. * More than 200 runners will pound the pavements for the annual Midsummer 5 mile road race, which is marking its 30th anniversary this year.

Entries are still open for the race which will take place on Wednesday at 7.30pm in Lavant.

DARTS: Halfway through the Bognor Friday Summer Darts League and the divisional Trebles knockouts took place at the Newtown Social Club.

A record turnout with 34 teams overall, meant it was a busy night for all involved.

First up was the Division 3 knockout which saw 14 teams take to the oche, equalling the record from 2014.

After some good darts, the final was contested between Dave Coupland, Martin Grainger & Les Mullinger (Royal Oak) and Joe Osman, Natasha HughesTHomas & Aston Seabridge (BRSA Jokers), who won their semi after a 105 out-shot from Seabridge.

After splitting the first two legs, the Jokers started the decider by getting in front thanks to another ton from Osman.

But their doubles deserted them, giving the Royal Oak a chance which they took, taking the Division 3 Trebles Champions title.

f Chi's athletes return to action this weekend Division 2 saw 11 teams take part, with the final pitting Ashley Clements, Richard Pennells & Don Miles (QE2 Galleon) against James Riggs, Karl Wingate & Dave Wingate (Friary 'D').

QE2 Galleon got off to a smooth start with the more consistent scores. THey allowed the Friary boys to close the gap, but Clements eventually hit double 7 for the leg.

Leg 2 saw a spirited effort from the Friary with the lowest score being 66, and tons from father and son Dave & Karl Wingate. THis left their team captain with 52 after 15 darts, and he saw off the leg on only his second throw.

THe last leg saw a drop in form, but the Friary still took the lead with Riggs taking the double again, and the Division 2 Trebles Champions title.

f Chi's teams have been in good form all year despite facing some of the best teams from across the south.

Chichester Falcons continue to soar

CHICHESTER Falcons Softball Club continue their rise through the Solent League after chalking up comfortable wins against Portsmouth Zombies and Southsea Sharks.

With the season's squad now set, the Oaklands Park-based side sit three and two in the division.

THe Falcons began the Zombies game with a single run and things stayed that way until the fourth innings where the Chichester offense busted out with a pile of hits to get 7-3 ahead.

THe Falcons outfield worked hard and kept Portsmouth quiet thanks to a commanding right field of Hettie McNeil and Dave Piesse.

THen Chichester took up the bat again in the fifth to club another seven runs on the board, with back-to-back-to-back home runs from Morris, Piesse and double MVP Ally Warr.

Going into the final innings. the Falcons were a clear 14 runs ahead and managed to keep the Zombies pinned back to win the game 20-6.

Southsea Sharks proved to be tougher

opponents. Founding members of the league, they are typically an organised outfit.

But the Falcons welcomed them with a fourspot in the first and some spectacular fielding

by James Wheeler, returning from injury at third base.

Peter Martin was rampant, hitting 5 for 5 on the night as Chichester pegged back the Sharks thanks to another stellar performance at second base by Anne Rutherford, while Ben Sawkins hoovered anything close to shortstop.

Stefan Panayotopoulos made the play of the night with a herculean running catch deep in centre right, as pitcher Jason Mercer battled with the wind to frustrate the Sharks offense.

Another two-out rally in the third effectively put the game to bed as the Falcons hit nine runs, putting them 18-9 up going into the final innings. Lucy Morris held steady at first base to limit the Sharks’ final response to just one run, leaving the Falcons to celebrate a second win for the week at Oaklands Park.

Division 1 saw nine teams step up, the same as the last two years, and only a single team short of the record.

Reigning champions Richard Ragless, Derrick Longhurst & Buster Barton (Squash Club) made the final but they faced a tough task, up against Lee Franklin, Micky Rowland & Dave Owens (Friary 'Z'), who are the top three players in the league this term.

THe Division 1 final started with Ragless winning the bullseye for first darts, but the Z's took the leg in 18 darts after a 140 from Rowland, 95 from Owens, and an 82 out-shot from Franklin.

Leg 2 saw tons from Ragless & Barton, and a 95 from Longhurst, but they still trailed the Z's by a small amount.

Owens missed the double for the win, as did Franklin by throwing too high and hitting the wrong double.

But Rowland only needed 1 dart to hit double 8, taking the match 2-0, and the Division 1 Trebles Champions title.

Harris' effort is in vain as Bognor's batters fall short

BOGNOR are facing an uphill challenge to keep their spot in Sussex Division Two after falling to a seven wicket defeat at home to Ifield.

Mikey Harris top-scored with 49 after Max Ashmore's side were put in to bat by the visitors. But, in what is becoming a bit of a trend, the rest of the Bognor batting line-up struggled as they managed to reach only 133 before being dismissed.

With the ball, Ashmore’s side kept things tight. But the score was never going to be enough and the visitors reached the target with plenty to spare.

THat defeat means Bognor fall into the bottom two of the division, having only won one of their six games so far.

Ashmore will be hoping for more tomorrow (Saturday, 12.30pm) when they travel to Ditchling to play St James's Montefiore.

Meanwhile, in division six west, Bognor seconds will be hoping to come out on top in the basement battle with Stirlands seconds.

Bognor suffered a heavy 137-run defeat on the road at Ifield seconds at the weekend, Joshua Broad top-scoring with 35.

Narrow defeat for Bognor B Patel guides Priory Park to win

BOGNOR B came up agonisingly short from registering succesive wins in the West Sussex Bowls League.

Despite having home advantage, the Waterloo Square side fell to a 76-68 defeat to Witterings with the visitors taking home seven of the ten points.

THey followed that up with a 86 to 72 win over Maltravers.

THe eight points taken from the match leaves the club in mid-table.

Elsewhere, division one Bognor A won only one of four rinks in a 89-71 defeat at stillunbeaten Worthing Pavilion A. THe A team return to action tomorrow with top-of-thetable Worthing visiting Waterloo Square (2pm).

It's been a quiet week for Chichester BC with neither side being in league action this week.

Both teams have played just four times this term, winning one which sees them towards the bottom of their respective leagues.

THe B side, who lost to Goring Manor on June 6 last time out, return to action on Monday at

home to Petworth in division three.

Fellow division three side Middleton found their stride when Aldingbourne visited.

THe sports ground side won three out of the four rinks in what was a convincing 119-50 victory.

THat was only the second win out of six this term but takes Middleton in to mid-table.

Elsewhere, Selsey's Little Spain BC suffered a resounding defeat when they went down 38-61, losing on all three rinks, to a strong Southbourne team in this annual home friendly played in a good spirit.

It was a different type of match two days later when 30 players on five rinks, playing 18 ends and bowling a total of 1,620 woods, were separated by only one shot at the end Fishbourne winning at Little Spain 81-80 in a fine sporting match.

Saturday sees the annual Captain's Day event at Liitle Spain when, after an afternoon of bowling, the players will sit down to a buffet meal provided by the members. Much fun is sure to be had.

CHICHESTER Priory Park's overseas star Abhishek Patel produced an inspired allround display to spur his side side on to victory over Preston Nomads seconds.

Chi have been performing well in Sussex Division THree this term, losing just once in six matches so far.

THat good form was continued with a three wicket win over Nomads at Goodwood on Saturday. THe victory was set up by Patel who, opening the bowling, tore into the visitors' batting line up to reduce them to 82 for five.

Nomads eventually reached 162 all out with the New Zealander Patel taking five for 30.

Priory Park started poorly in reply, being reduced to 17 for two before Jay Harting produced a typical hard-hitting display (52).

After a slight middle order collapse, it was then left to Patel (31*) and wicketkeeper George Perry (20) to put on an unbeaten 42 for the eighth wicket and guide Priory home.

THat win leaves them third in division three, just behind Pagham, who stay second after a comfortable nine wicket win over Eastbourne

After winning the toss and putting the visitors in, Ollie Pearce (5 for 32) and Peter Cotterill (4 for 14) did most of the damage as Eastbourne were bowled out for just 48.

Aiden Zammit (46* off 20 balls) then led the charge as Pagham wrapped up the win in the fifth over.

Pagham travel to Preston Nomads tomorrow (12.30pm) while Priory Park will visit fourthplaced Haywards Heath.

In the Sussex Premier division, Middleton's Gerhardt Abrahams was the star, smashing a majestic 144 in his side's 86-run win over Hastings & St Leonards Priory.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Abrahams was the main man to guide his side over the 200 mark as others struggled around him.

By the time he was the last man out, he had scored more than half his side's 213 runs,with the 126-ball knock including 14 fours and five sixes.

With the ball, Matt Cooke (4 for 32) wasted no time in making the most of the conditions at Horntye Park, reducing Hastings to 32 for five.

THey eventually recovered to reach 127, well short of Middleton's score.

Next up for Sean Heather's side is a return to the Sports Ground where tomorrow they will host Preston Nomads.

Hauxwell stars on the national stage DRAGONFLYERS' Izzy Hauxwell produced an inspired display on the national stage to prove she is one of the best trampolinists of her age in the country.

Hauxwell was one of a small team from the Bognor Regis-based team to take part in the first national league competition at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

With Dragonflyers' pre-competition training not going well due to school exams and health issues, coach Linda O'Leary said she had reduced expectations.

But these were quickly exceeded when Hauxwell pulled out two stunning performances to finish in fourth position in the 13/14 yrs level two (l2).

Finally, finishing in seventh overall, this sees her take 50 points towards the national finals.

Also competing were Rosie Budge and Lucy Hijmans, who both participated in their first league event l3.

Despite the nerves, they produced good showings to place them in the top half of their categories.

Sofija Kalnicenko came back from a disappointing set to pull out a 7.1 tariff in the voluntary routine that was the sixth highest ranked in the 13/14 yrs l2; while Anya Johnston's set was the third ranked in 15/16 yrs l2.

Budge, Hauxwell, Johnston and Libby Morton all represent the south next week in Birmingham at the regional ream finals.

Dragonflyers now offer recreational sessions on Monday evening for anyone interested in trampolining lessons.

Rocks aiming for new play-off push as manager hunt goes on ROCKS' chiefs claim the club can push on experience another playoff rollercoaster in the coming year.

Bognor fans will remember the win over Dulwich Hamlet last month for years to come after the victory lifted the club back into the National League South.

With the new division changing its play-off format, officials at Nyewood Lane believe that the club are pushing to get themselves in the end-of-season shake-up yet again.

THat's despite the usual restrictions in terms of budget and location, which hamper the Rocks year after year.

THere is also added complications because the club still has few than 11 players on the books with less than a month to go until preseason and are yet to appoint a manager to replace Jamie Howell.

But general manager Jack Pearce told the Post he was confident the club could perform well and be competitive at a higher level.

He said: "We will be competitive and we will try to do as well as we can. We are not going in to National League South to simply consolidate."

THe new format - backed by 18 of 24 National League clubs at the AGM – will mean 7th place will be good enough to join the post-season party. Come the end of the season, 4th will play 7th and 5th play 6th over one-leg before the winners take on the teams that finished 2nd and 3rd.

THose that come out on top of the mini tournament will then be promoted to the fifth tier of English football.

Pearce pointed to the change as a reason to lift Rocks' hopes going into the new season.

He said: "With the change of the situation for promotion where it's the top seven not the top five in the playoffs, a third of the entire league will be up there competing come the end of the season. It's our aim to get in the top third. THat's the way it will be.

"We'll be doing what we always do and that's trying to find hunger for success based on formula of young players with a little bit of expertise."

THere was no more news out of Nyewood this week in terms of adding to the squad of nine.

Both goalkeeper Dan Lincoln and defender Sami El-Abd are still yet to confirm if they will remain at the club for the next season.

Most of the focus, though, has been on the search for Howell's replacement, with interviews for the manager taking place over the past week.

Pearce said there were about eight candidates for the role and he was clear on the type of person that he wanted.

He said: "We want to be very successful in the south but it's a very difficult job for anyone that wants to manage the club.

"THere's not the density of population to find people who live nearby."

Pompey friendly change of date THE ROCKS' friendly with Portsmouth has been brought forward a day, now taking place on Tuesday, July 18, at 7pm.

THe match at Nyewood Lane against last year's League Two champions is the standout fixture in Bognor's pre-season line-up.

Also visiting the Lane are Crawley Town on July 26 (7.45pm), the League Two side who will be under the leadership of former Champions League winner Harry Kewell.

First up, though, is a trip to Woodside Road to play Ryman Premier outfit Worthing on July 8 (3pm) before the Rocks head to Chichester City on July 14 (7.30pm).

Another note for the diary for Rocks' regulars is July 4 for the Supporters Club AGM, which will take place at the club from 7.30pm. All are welcome. * Pagham FC have announced their first two pre-season friendlies ahead of the upcoming SCFL Premier season.

THe Nyewood Lane side will host Wessex League side Baffins Milton Rovers on July 25 (7.30pm). Before that, THe Lions will make the short trip to Shoreham on July 11 with the home side unsure if they will be in the Ryman South or SCFL Premier due to Haywards Heath's appeal over docked points.

IT'S less than a month now until the Rocks return to action.

All thoughts now are turning to next season - even though the club currently has no manager and nine players on the books.

In the off-season, the Post will be speaking to those around the club for a behindthe-scenes guide as the club gets ready for life back in the National League South.

THis week, it's the second part of a Q&A with forward Ollie Pearce, who has committed to the club for another year.

What have you been up to since the end of the season?

THe last month has been very much about having a rest. I try not to think much about football during this time; it's a long season and with the playoffs there was the extra week so I'm trying to get as much rest as I can.

It has crossed my mind with next season and what needs to be done at the higher level.

We still have got players to come in and I'm trying to not really think too much about how we will get on.

But the good thing is with the FA trophy run we did have a good run against sides in higher divisions the season before last.

We have always got that to look back on. We are full of confidence after winning promotion so there's no reason why we can't give a good account of ourselves.

How do you go about getting ready for pre-season?

Personally, and I'm sure a lot of us do the same, I'll have two or three weeks off immediately after the end of the season.

THen it's back on to the hard work and I have got my own personal trainer who I work with two or three times a week.

THat keeps me ticking over until the real hard work starts.

All the squad will come back together at the start of July and then we obviously have three or four weeks before the season starts.

I'm not worrying too much

about that for now though. I have a week's holiday which I think I've deserved.

I'll go and enjoy that before focussing on getting myself back in to the shape that I need to be.

How would you describe the club's pre-season training?

Neil [Cockcroft, the club's fitness coach] runs the sessions and to be blunt I'm not saying I'm looking forward to seeing him.

THe club goes down to East Dean to do the pre-season. I think Jack knows a few people down there as we've been going down there ever since I joined.

It's a perfect spot as we are always up in the hills running and then there is a football pitch, too, which is nice and flat.

Have there been any horror stories from pre-season where Neil pushes people a bit too hard?

[Laughs] Yes, there has been a little bit of that. Different people keep themselves in different types of shape over the close season.

I won't lie, he has got me close a few times as he does like to run us quite badly.

I have seen a few players throw up during a tough session but it's not quite as bad as the stories you hear from the 70s or 80s.

Which pre-season game are you looking forward to?

We always have good preseason fixtures and this year is no different with the Portsmouth and Crawley games.

I hope it gives some new supporters the chance to come down and experience the great atmosphere down there at the Lane.

Hopefully fans will be patient with us as it will not be like last season where we were sitting at the top of the league all year.

But we'll work hard and I hope they'll pack out the Nye Camp and enjoy the year ahead.
