Call to stand up to criminals HAVE-A-GO Bognor Regis man Malcolm MacArthur has called on other residents to stop the crooks.

Mr MacArthur grappled with a suspected bike thief who threatened to stab him until a Good Samaritan came to his rescue.

"I can't believe that in Bognor Regis this sort of behaviour is just accepted and that it's a way of life.

"We have got to have reached the

point where the majority of law-abiding citizens can stand up and say that now it's the time for it to stop.

"I thought the guy was going to stab me. But I would do the same again, even more so now," Mr MacArthur said on Tuesday. "At the time, I didn't have an opinion.

"This was something that happened in front of me. Since then, I've given it quite a bit of thought - and I feel quite

emotional about it - that it is wrong to just walk by. If it had been my partner, what would I have thought?"

The incident took place at the Arun Retail Park on Shripney Road about midday on May 13.

Town centre resident Mr MacArthur, 59, and his partner, Susan Pitt, 59, had arrived in the site's car park and saw a middle-aged woman tussling with a man, believed to be in his 20s, over a

push bike. "She cried out he was trying to steal her bike," Mr MacArthur said.

"It was happening three metres away as we got out from my car. As we came across, the man decided to run.

"He first said it was his bike - though the woman's bags matched its panniers - and then he went into one of the stores.

I went to walk away but I thought it was wrong."

Last parade for standard

A SYMBOL of wartime defiance is to be seen in public in Bognor Regis for the final time.

The Dunkirk Veterans' Association Standard will be taken on its final parade in the town next month.

The standard will be on show at the revived Armed Forces Day on June 18 before it is stored in a church in the town.

David Hewings, secretary of the RAFA branch in Bognor Regis, said: "Previously laid up at the South Bersted Parish Church, the standard of the Chichester branch of the Dunkirk Veterans' Association will be paraded for the very last time by the Bognor Regis Army Cadet Force, Prince of Wales's Royal Regiment, after the presentation of Veterans' Badges and laid up in perpetuity in the Methodist Church, Waterloo Square, alongside the other standards already laid up there."

The standard is pictured above with cadets l-r: Lance Corporal Jasmin Seagratt, Cadet Sergeant Major Callum Gobey and Lance Corporal James Budd.

The time of the Dunkirk evacuation between May 26-June 4, 1940, was the lowest point for the allied forces in the Second World War. Thousands of British, French and Belgian troops were trapped between the German advance and the English Channel.

A rescue operation by the Merchant and Royal navies and air cover from the RAF plus a flotilla of hundreds of small boats saw nearly 340,000 brought back to

the UK. This led the prime minister, Winston Churchill, to deliver his famous speech to rally the nation: "We shall fight them on the beaches...we shall never surrender."

The cadets and the standard will be present at the start of Armed Forces Day in Waterloo Square Gardens and the adjoining seafront.

The drumhead service will begin to be set up at 9.30am to be attended by exservice veteran associations, cadet forces and a host of dignitaries.

Mr Hewings said: "Following the service, the standard will be marched off.

It will be passed to the methodist church in a short ceremony at the end of their morning service at 11.30am.

"Descendants of Dunkirk veterans will be most welcome to attend. This is probably the last time a Dunkirk standard will be laid up."

On the seafront, the day will continue until 5pm with free on-stage entertainment from the Chichester City Band, the 40s-style Silhouette Show, the RAFA Choir and RAFA Skiffle Band.

The cadet forces will be providing displays on The Esplanade and, subject to call-outs, the RNLI will stage a lifeboat demonstration at sea. The Salvation Army band will be playing on the seafront bandstand.

In Waterloo Square Gardens, the public will be able to meet veterans who served the country as far back as the Second World War. Cadet units, Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies will also be present.

ÂŁ250,000 drug haul in village DRUGS worth around ÂŁ250,000 have been found by police during a raid in Aldingbourne.

The discovery was made at an industrial site in Hook Lane on Tuesday. Officers had received several anonymous reports of anti-social behaviour in relation to the address over the past six months.

When they arrived, they discovered an improvised steroid laboratory in a metal container on the site.

Detective Sergeant Graham Leaney said: "This search and the subsequent arrests show that we do take reports from the public seriously, even those that come in anonymously.

"We would always encourage people to contact us if they see or hear anything

suspicious in their area no matter how small it may seem as others may have reported similar concerns and it allows us to build a bigger picture of potential criminality."

A 54-year-old Bognor Regis man has been charged with money laundering and production of Class C drugs. He has been remanded into custody and will appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on June 13.

A 50-year-old woman from Bognor Regis was also arrested on suspicion of money laundering and has been released under investigation.

Amanda's thanks to DIY SOS team and volunteers

Residents want bandstand kept

A YAPTON family has a brighter future thanks to the tireless efforts of the BBC's DIY SOS team and hundreds of volunteers.

The home of Amanda Worne, pictured above, and her family was completely transformed last week as part of the DIY SOS: Big Build television programme.

The main aim of the show's designers and builders was to adapt the house to make it accessible to Amanda who has been wheelchair-bound since an accident in August, 2015. However, they also kept the homely feel of the house, something Amanda, aged 46, was really impressed by.

She said: “As soon as everyone left, I said ‘This is home’ because it’s been made so personal and was made with such love. I didn’t feel like I had to get used to it.

“There is so much sentiment behind everything in the house that makes it feel like a real home.

"They really played on the fact that I am a mum and that’s made it special. They've made the house so that I can be a mum again” Since the transformation less than a week ago, the whole family has benefited from their new home. Her four children, Megan, Jacob, Amelia and Joseph, now play less of a role in helping her with her everyday life.

She said: “They’ve got their childhood back. It’s like there was a ton of bricks on this family which has now been lifted and used to build something amazing.

“The other day we watched a film together for the first time since the accident because I hadn't been able to join them on the sofa before. I used to spend my evenings separate from them.

"This has brought us as close as we could possibly be.”

Most of all, though, Amanda was

overwhelmed by the support the project garnered.

She said: "There were so many people wanting to help.

"They had one of the biggest groups of volunteers the show has ever seen. And to them I can't say thank you enough."

Her husband, Vic Worne, 44, agreed. He said: “All of us have got our lives back. It was for Mandy, but it was also for all of us” Details of the home were kept secret to the whole family during its construction.

For Vic this proved difficult.

He said: "I really wanted to be here to help. For me that was the hardest thing.

"If this happens again in an area nearby I want to help."

The inside of the house is to be kept under wraps until the final results of the build will be aired on BBC One within the next 6-12 months.

SCORES of residents have made their latest protest against plans to move the bandstand from Bognor Regis seafront.

Some 80 protestors gathered at the historic structure on Wednesday to make clear their anger at the proposals

by Arun District Council.

One of those present, Berkeley Court resident Peter Faulkner, said: "It just seems to me to be a frivolous waste of money. Arun District Council can't find the money to do so many things.

"But they can find thousands of pounds to waste on moving a perfectly good bandstand which is our only attraction on the seafront.

"I'm a civil engineer and I know what's involved in taking something like a bandstand down and putting it up somewhere else. It's not that easy and isn't a five minute job."

The protest was organised by Bognor Regis town councillor Jeanette Warr (LD, Hotham) as part of her ongoing campaign since Arun revealed plans to move the bandstand along the seafront from its site since 1948 opposite Clarence Road to Waterloo Square Gardens opposite the pier.

The proposal is part of Arun's plans to revive the seafront with a series of themes. The bandstand's site is the widest section of the promenade and has been earmarked for shops and a new toilet block.

These conveniences will replace the now closed underground loos just east of the bandstand and opposite the pier.

But Arun has yet to finalise the scheme, though it has allocated some £200,000 for the new toilets.

District councillor Paul Wells (LD, Orchard) said: "Moving the bandstand is an idea at the moment. Will it happen?

We will have to wait and see.

"But, obviously, a lot of people have said they are very unhappy about the idea of the move. I suggest you put your thoughts in writing to the leader of Arun and make your views known.

"If it's going to moved, it will have to go through the planning process because it's Grade II-listed, and you will have the chance to have your say at that time."

He said he would be holding a meeting next month for residents to meet Arun representatives.

Francis Oppler, county councillor for Bognor Regis East, said: "It's totally unacceptable to move the bandstand, which has been here since 1948. I believe the bandstand will just come apart and we could be faced with the situation where Arun has not got the money to re-assemble it."

The proposed toilets would replace those at the Regis Centre site and the foreshore's temporary loos.

This would mean just one set of toilets between Aldwick and Butlin's.

` Closure of viaduct ESSENTIAL works will require the Felpham Relief Road to be temporarily closed.

As reported, the stretch of the A259, which includes the viaduct over the railway line, needs to be shut for repairs to take place.

The closure between the A29 and Bay Bridge Crescent will take place from 8pm on June 9 to 6am on June 12.

Barratt Homes, which funded the £28m road, is publicising details of the closure so local residents can plan their journeys accordingly. Diversions will be put in place.

Tim Hill, the managing director of Barratt Homes, said: “In order to minimise disruption, we have arranged for these works to take place over one weekend.

"This will involve working during the day and overnight with single lane temporary traffic lights on the viaduct.

"We’re grateful to local residents for bearing with us while these essential works are carried out.”

The works follow a routine joint inspection by Barratt Homes, highways authority West Sussex County Council and contractor, HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction.

This revealed items which needed to be repaired such as leaking expansion joints before the county council becomes responsible for the road.

The road was opened in March, 2016, and was funded by Barratt Homes as part of the planning approval it received for 700-plus nearby homes in Felpham.

Flags lowered for victims OFFICIAL flags were flown in Bognor Regis at half-mast from Tuesday out of respect for the victims of the terrorist attack in Manchester.

The four flags along the promenade - the Union flag, the Arun District Council flag, the St George's flag and the Bognor Regis town flag - were put at half mast by Arun's foreshore staff. The Union flag outside Bognor Regis Town Hall was also at halfmast.

Arun District Council's leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, said: “The terrorist attack in Manchester on Monday night was deplorable. On behalf of residents and councillors of the Arun district, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to all those affected by this atrocity, in particular the loved ones of those that have died.

"We urge people to come together and stand united against an act that was intended to terrorise and destroy.

"As a sign of respect, flags on our council buildings will fly at half-mast.”

Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall has also expressed the town's sympathies about the outrage.

He said: "I have sent a letter from the people of Bognor Regis and Bognor Regis Town Council to the mayor of Manchester conveying our condolences."

He also led a minute's silence at a seafront bandstand protest on Wednesday in memory of those killed in the bombing.

A total of 22 people died and 119 injured in the suicide bombing in the Manchester Arena where popstar Ariane Grande had been performing on Monday night.

Campaigning for next month's general election was suspended on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a planned strike by Southern staff next Tuesday has been suspended by the RMT union because of the need for heightened security alerts.

` Armed patrols ARMED police patrols have been stepped up across Sussex as a result of the Manchester terror attack.

Sussex Police reacted to the increase in the threat level announced by the Home Secretary on Tuesday but bolstering its armed policing capability.

Its top officers have increased its armed officers' shifts to 12 hours and have enhanced high visibility policing across the two force areas to provide reassurance to residents.

Head of operations command Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry said: "The independent Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre raised the national threat level to 'critical' which means that their assessment is not only that an attack remains highly unlikely but a further attack may be imminent.

"This threat level applies to the whole of the UK and not any specific area.

"Our top priority for Surrey and Sussex is to ensure the safety of the public and, in response to the increased national threat level, we have increased our armed policing capabilities across both countries and continue to carry out high visibility patrols.

"You will see more armed police officers, working alongside regular patrol teams, around the two counties at key sites and in public areas over the coming days as we continue to operate in a state of heightened alert.

"Against this backdrop, you will see us continue to provide our day-to-day policing across the two counties."

BID launched amid clashes

ARGUING business owners clashed at the launch of a scheme to boost Bognor Regis.

The official start of the consultation for the proposed Business Improvement District for the town centre featured heated clashes between supporters and opponents of the project.

Tempers began to flare and voices were raised as those on both sides of the argument forcibly stated their cases.

Opponents were heckled by the majority number of supporters among the 50-strong audience at the presentation.

One of the scheme's supporters, Chris Heaps, said: “The BID business plan is an invitation to businesses to help our beautiful town be even better. Bognor Regis has so much potential. It's time that potential was realised. The town is on the up and a BID will keep that momentum going.”

He explained the overall objectives of a BID were: to promote a positive image for Bognor Regis; to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour; to create a vibrant night-time economy; and to put a greater focus on parking.

Jeremy Pardey said he had total faith in the town centre manager, Toyubur Rahman, pictured right with supporters, and had seen Bognor Regis improve since he started work in 2014.

“All we have seen are improvements and Bognor Regis getting better and better.

Butlin's is important to Bognor Regis and I believe Bognor Regis is just as important to Butlin's."

Condor Blinds' director Carl Rixon said he viewed the High Street/London

Road improvements last year, close to his business, as proof of what could be achieved.

He said: “The journey to change has begun but there is still a long way to go."

It made sense to pool the views of all businesses together to achieve the best results, he said.

But a leading critic of a BID, Roger Lewis, said the scheme was lacking transparency and clarity.

“You are asking 293 businesses to vote on something they are unsure about. If you turned up at a bank and asked for money like that, you would get a frank 'no'. These people want to spend £700,000 of other people's money."

Hugh Coster, Bognor Regis Civic Society's deputy chairman, said the administration costs were almost half of the total £948,000 expected to be raised.

He also wanted to know how the BID board would avoid providing services which were already the responsibility of various councils.

“The danger with these bids, and I have seen it in Chichester, is they end up doing what the councils should be doing and you are spending taxpayers' money on those roles and for which they are receiving money through business rates in the first place. That's what I am concerned about.”

He complained the board would be unaccountable if its meetings were held in private.

The BID will cover the area from West Street to the University of Chichester campus. Businesses with an annual rateable value over £6,000 will be subject to a 1.5 per cent levy if it goes ahead.

Ballot papers go out next Monday and must be returned by 5pm on July 3. The

result will be announced the next day.

The BID needs 51 per cent approval of those 293 premises as well as the same percentage of the total rateable value in its area. If it goes ahead, the levy would produce £709,160 to be spent on the town during the BID's five years. This would be supplemented by grants and income to

Book scheme to help people with dementia A READING friends project has been launched to help dementia patients around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

The initiative has been put together by the area's Dementia Alliance. A spokesman said: "It is aiming to reach people who are isolated, diagnosed with dementia or are no longer able to read.

"The project is being jointly delivered by West Sussex Libraries, Dementia Support (Tangmere) and Age UK West Sussex."

The scheme was revealed during a special lunchtime talk, pictured below, at Chichester Library by the Chichester and Bognor Positive Thinkers to mark national dementia awareness week.

Called Positively Dementia, the talk saw a random collection of thoughts, poems and reminiscences from the group.

Members of the group led the session by reading their favourite poems, song lyrics, enjoying the Address to the Haggis by Robbie Burns and recalling stories of sky dives and their time served in the Korean War.

Other innovative ways of raising awareness of dementia took place during the week.

Staff from the Weald & Downland Living Museum went to St Richard's Hospital and gave a moving talk about the museum to enable people with dementia and their families the opportunities to reminisce about childhoods and share memories of their visits to the museum.

West Sussex and Coastal MIND held an information day in Arundel, Willow Lodge Care Home in Southbourne had an open day with a virtual dementia tour, giving people the experience of how someone with dementia might experience their environment.

Dementia Support at Tangmere held an open day to show people around the site. The building is being developed to become a hub to bring partners working in dementia together in one place to make the journey from diagnosis to living well with dementia far easier for people with dementia and their carers.

From page one Mr MacArthur tracked him down inside the store and confronted him. The suspect co-operated at first but he became abusive and threatening.

"He threatened to knock me out and punch me in the mouth," he said. "He then told me he had a knife in his pocket and he was going to stab me. He was desperately trying to get into his pocket and I was doing everything I could to stop him.

"I thought 'He's going to stab me if he gets half a chance'. I knew I couldn't keep it up and this guy was going to stab me."

Building site manager Mr MacArthur said he kept up the struggle for about three minutes before another man stepped forward to restrain the suspect. The suspect did eventually escape out of the back of the store but detectives told Mr MacArthur they had seen him on the store's CCTV. Before he got away, he was found to have wirecutters in his pocket and a 2ft pair of boltcroppers. No knife was seen.

A Sussex Police spokesman confirmed the incident took place and thanked the store's staff for their assistance as well.

He described the suspect as white, in his late teens, with short blond hair swept forward and wearing a two-piece black, white and grey tracksuit with the word 'Legend' down one leg.

Ray survives council vote LONG-SERVING Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall has been re-elected by a single vote.

Cllr Radmall, insert, was chosen to lead the council for a further year by 5-4 at its annual meeting. The knife-edge result meant he retained the position he has held since the spring of 2005.

He said he was determined to use the coming year to continue the council's opposition to the 1,000 or so houses planned for the area and to oversee the project to protect the area's beach.

He said: "As far as I am concerned, we are going to win the sea defence project and, as far as I am concerned, I will do everything to win the housing situation. I believe we have to fight for this community."

The bid to replace Cllr Radmall was led by Cllr Dawn Hall. She proposed Cllr Peter Atkins as the new chairman after she had praised the current chairman for his consistent hard work.

"I am probably the person on this council who has known Ray the longest," she said. "He has been an absolutely fantastic asset for Pagham and a brilliant chairman.

"He takes on an awful lot, as we know, and there have been problems since I became a councillor that have been tackled by him. I think Ray, since he took over from Jacquie (Miles), has done a really good job."

Cllr Radmall's work had seen the coast protection scheme towards its conclusion and had made a lot of progress in tackling the housing proposals, said Cllr Hall This made the meeting a good time for him to stand down to avoid the stress and strain of the role taking its toll on his health.

"I think you need a rest from being chairman," said Cllr Hall. "I would like to propose Peter Atkins as chairman for the coming year.

"I have seen him in action. He is very knowledgeable and I think he would do this council proud."

Cllr David Huntley praised Cllr Atkins for his work since he joined the council and the specialist know-how he brought from his farming background.

But he said: "We might be changing horses in mid-stream right when we are solving various problems. It would be sad to lose Ray's encyclopaedic knowledge of the parish and the people."

He was backed by Cllr Mike Cole.

Cllr Radmall became the council's chairman after the death of the previous chairman, Cllr Miles, in March, 2005.

She had been in charge since the mid1990s and he had served as her vicechairman for many years.

At last Tuesday's meeting, Cllr David Huntley was unanimously re-elected as Cllr Radmall's deputy chairman.

Plan withdrawn AN INTENDED increase in children at a pre-school in Aldwick has been scrapped.

Dizzy Ducklings had asked Arun District Council to vary a condition which limited the number of children allowed to use its premises from 30 to a new maximum of 48.

As reported, councillors deferred a decision last month because of concerns about the noise from the extra use at Mosse Hall in St Richard's Way and its outdoor play area.

Dizzy Ducklings' co-owner Lee Austin told the council last week he wanted to withdraw the application.

He wrote: "...the need to increase

the numbers was for this current term to help with the large number of children leaving for school in July.

"Because the next hearing will not be held until two weeks before the end of term, we feel it would be pointless to carry on the application as this would waste yours, and the committee's valuable time, working on and discussing the increase when it will not be needed for the new school term in September as numbers will be lower."

The original limit on children using the hall was imposed in 1972 when the building was first used for playgroup activities.

RETIRED fork lift driver John Howell has joined two runners to ensure cardiac arrest victims in Bognor Regis town centre can survive.

Generous John, 66, donated £1,000 to boost the sponsorship of Tone Zone Runners Paul Wells and Claire Baker from last month's Brighton Marathon to a total of £1,650.43, pictured left.

They have donated this to the appeal by Bognor Regis Lions Club for a defibrillator - and the potentially life-saving machine was due to come into use yesterday. It is being kept behind the pharmacy counter in Boots before it can be installed on the building's frontage to cover the London Road precinct's northern end.

John, of North Bersted, said: "I decided when I retired early, and I had a bit of cash, I wanted to support local causes. This is one of the biggest donations I have made.

I did a first aid course when I worked, and I will go on the defibrillator training when it is available, so I will be able to use that."

Lion Richard Johns, the club's press officer, said: "A defibrillator is only of use if it is within 200m of the victim. To make any difference, it has to be used within five minutes of them having a cardiac arrest.

"I'm absolutely stunned that Paul and Claire did the marathon for our appeal and that John decided to help as well.

"The defibrillator is fully automatic.

Anybody can use it. They just have to dial 999, get the code, remove the person's clothing and put the pads on their chest.

"If you do nothing, the patient will die. If you try, the patient might survive."

Each defibrillator costs at least £2,650 and the latest donation has been added to previous donations to the Lions.

Claire, 45, said: "Knowing we were running the marathon for such a good cause spurred us on."

Paul, 43, added: "It was a tough run on a hot day but it was for a worthwhile cause."

The Lions also intend to install a second town centre defibrillator.

Appeal over alleged fraud

Cllrs Steve Goodheart and Pat Dillon are staging the session from 3pm-5pm today at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road.

Cllr Goodheart said: "It's been really interesting the way the sessions have been getting more support from residents and other councillors.

"Some of the issues that have been discussed cover the need for more Neighbourhood Watch areas to be introduced in the town centre area and the state of the pavements.

"The need to stop bike riders from going too fast down London Road has also been raised, along with the amount of posters for circuses and funfairs that are stuck up and left up for ages."

Improving public areas to match the quality of the town's gardens was another concern, he added.

The nine dancers used music and movement to show how the crime would affect a woman in a hard-hitting piece by Year 12 students Charlotte Walters and Shannon Noble.

Their work was featured in Dance House 2017 at the Alexandra Theatre in Bognor Regis earlier this month.

Charlotte said: "We developed our piece around domestic violence, using a number of female dancers to portray the different emotions of one woman going through domestic violence and showing different endings to what could happen to her."

Shannon said: "We had full control of the piece which was really motivational and a great experience.

"We both plan to study drama at university after our A-levels. So this was a great experience to be part of.

"We look forward to hopefully taking part in Dance House next year."

The other cast members were: Mia Evans, Dionne Harrison, Alex Holland, Ellie Pacey, Emily Paige-Rayner, Ed Searle and Ellie Shimmell.

College music curriculum leader Nicole Matthews said: "Charlotte and Shannon took control of everything.

"The ideas the group came up with were brilliant and they put huge effort and time into rehearsals.

"The group worked really well together and they were excellent at editing and progressing their piece to get it as good as possible."

The students are part of an extracurricular dance group at the college.

DETECTIVES are seeking a woman they believe duped workers in two Bognor Regis stores.

The police officers want to speak to the woman in connection with fraud and shoplifting offences at two nearby shops within a short time.

The alleged crimes - which involved more than £300 - took place at the Marks and Spencer Foodhall and Pets at Home on the Arun Retail Park, in Shripney Road, on May 15.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "At around 5pm, the suspect entered Pets at Home and began to pick up items off of the shelves before heading over to the till. She then told the cashier that her puppy had died and that she needed to return these items.

"The staff member consoled the women and refunded her a total of £130.

"The suspect then left the store and was seen getting into the passenger seat of a grey or blue vehicle which drove away."

Police were called a short time later when M&S staff reported a woman had been in the store and spun a story about some flowers she had ordered and wanted a refund.

When the shop assistant left the customer service desk to fetch the manager, the woman loaded her bag with more than £52-worth of alcohol.

She was given a £117 refund after a discussion with the manager.

The woman responsible for both offences is described as white, 5ft 8in tall, with dark brown hair in a ponytail.

She was wearing dark trousers, a grey blazer and black shoes.

Miles of smiles as town's race sees record number of runners FIRST-TIME winners James Westlake and Johanna Spannagl struck gold in a recordbreaking Bognor Prom 10k.

The winners of the men's and women's categories of the annual road race led home the largest number of finishers the town had ever seen. A total of 1,574 runners made it along the seafront course to set a new high compared to the previous best of 1,549 from four years ago.

Crawley AC member James, 25, finished in 31:47 in his fourth entry in the race. He said: "This is the first time I have really given it a go in this race.

"I've done really well. It's not quite my personal best but a 10k is all about running as hard as you can and holding on for as long as possible.

"This is a good event. The weather was lovely and it's good when you come on to the seafront for the last two-and-a-half miles and it's straight along the prom.

"It's about putting your head down and making it to the finishing line."

James was comfortably ahead of Matt Bradford, of Lewes AC, in second in 32:30, and Chichester Runners' James Baker, third in 33:05. They are pictured middle right.

For Johanna, 23, her success in 38:50 came in her first Bognor race. The Horsham Blue Star Harrier said: "This is only my second 10k. I did a lot of swimming and I was a triathlete until I had an accident on my bike. I decided I wanted to take running seriously. I'm really pleased with how well it went. This was a really lovely run. There were so many people taking part and along

the course as well.

"The atmosphere was just fantastic with a lot of people cheering you on.

"So many told me that I was the first lady and that definitely spurred me on."

The second lady home was Shona Crombie-Hicks, of Cheltenham Harriers, in 39:34, and Lucy Thraves, of Chichester Runners, was third in 41:00.

Neither winning time threatened the course records but the event was another success for Bognor Hotham Rotary Club and Tone Zone Runners.

It was the second to be held by their partnership - after the Rotarians set up the race in 1995 - and their links will be strengthened further next year.

Bognor Hotham Rotary Club president Peter Elliott said: "The association with Tone Zone has really made the race go well. It's the biggest sporting event in the town and it's been good to have their input and their new ideas.

"The race brings a lot of local people together and talking to each other. And it raises a lot of money for various charities."

Race entry co-ordinator David McManus, from Tone Zone Runners, said: "We're pleased with the way the race has gone.

We will be looking to do a couple of things differently next year.

"There will be more about the race on social media and will be designing a new badge. But the race will still remain for local people as well as for the elite runners.

The majority of entries still come from the Bognor Regis area."

Among the Bognor Regis residents taking part was accountant Paul Bailey, 51, who hoped to raise ÂŁ600 for Cancer Research UK in memory of two work colleagues at town firm H&B Sensors - Tracy Steven, 50, who died in May, 2015, and Iain 'Lofty' Mitchell, 48, who died in June, 2016.

"This is my second year and I finished in just under an hour to beat my time from last year," said Paul. "It was a brilliant atmosphere. I'm not a natural runner and that keeps you going.

"I wanted to do it for Tracy and Lofty, who were both lovely people, and I'm pleased have got round in one piece in their memory."

Spinning instructor Katie Young, 47, was one of the Team Arena team raising money for St Wilfrid's Hospice. She finished in about 46 minutes and said: "I've done this race every year apart from the time I broke my leg. I love running and I'm getting faster as I get older and the hospice is a good cause."

This year's 1,850 entries - just below the 1,881 record - came from around the south-east and as far away as California in the USA. The race's charity partner was CancerWise in Chichester.

Its volunteer co-ordinator, Christine Applewhite, said: "We see about 250 people every month and this event is real bonus for us.

We have ten people running and 12 collecting. Our services cost ÂŁ75,000 a year to run and we don't get any NHS or government funding."

` New site for sales SELLERS and buyers are settling in to the new home for Sunday car boot sales in Bognor Regis.

The weekly events from 8am2pm moved to the Rocks' site in Nyewood Lane and Hawthorn Road earlier this month.

They were taken over by car booting business partners Ian Warnett and Ivy Watson who had run the sales for the previous operator, Bray Associates.

Ian said: "We are bringing some life back to Bognor. The football club have bent over backwards to help us.

"We are getting nearly 30 stalls a week, which is the same as we used to get at our previous site at the Hothamton car park in Queensway.

"The public want the car boot sales. If they didn't, they would not have lasted for 40 years in the town."

The sales began on the former bus station site in the High Street, now Morrisons' car park, before they moved to the Queensway.

They were set to end before the football club stepped in to offer a new location. The club has opened its burger bar for snacks and hot and cold drinks for those who go to the sales.

In the winter, the sellers will have the chance to use the Seasons clubhouse at the football ground to ensure the sales can continue every week for the first time regardless of the weather.

The entrance for vehicles is from Bognor Sports Club in Hawthorn Road and for pedestrians from Nyewood Lane.

Protesting residents show plenty of the write stuff

DETERMINED residents have taken the number of protest letters against planned housing in Pagham to more than 2,000.

The lengthy campaign opposing the proposed developments has entered the thousands. The milestone figure was reached last Wednesday and was increased by letter number 2,001 the next day.

A spokesman for the PAGAM protest group said: "At long last, the magical barrier has been broken.

"Long live Pagham and Aldwick. A day to remember - May 18."

The stream of correspondence to Arun District Council in the past five months has made the campaign among the biggest from the Bognor Regis area.

The 2,000th letter was written by Charlotte Drew, of Swandene. She told Arun: "I object to the planned building of new houses which will have a devastating effect on the village and completely change its character and feel.

"It will be put a strain on our local services, the roads will become congested and it will no longer feel like a safe place to raise our son."

Grosvenor Way resident Adam Peal followed last Thursday by saying he had seen a steady increase in traffic in the 12 years he had lived in Rose Green.

"The general traffic levels running from Pagham to Chichester are already at what appears to be capacity," he said.

"Anyone who commutes between the

two, and beyond, already well knows the delays on a daily basis and the absolute carnage created by one or the other of the two roads on the west of town being restricted by an accident/roadworks/ increased traffic.

"There is no sustainable room for growth without considerable road development which in itself would have to run across prime agricultural land."

PAGAM (Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement) is also urging residents to write further objections against Arun's decision to include the sites for 1,200 homes - at Sefter Road, Summer Lane and Hook Lane - in the draft version of its local plan land use blueprint.

It is holding an advice session from midday-4pm tomorrow at Aldwick Royal British Legion Club in Hewarts Lane for anyone who needs help to put pen to paper.

A statement from PAGAM says: "We are now at a critical point in the fight against Arun. They have produced something called a local plan which is trying to 'lock' in where housing can take place in the future. The residents can object to this positioning of housing developments amongst other things."

The forms which are completed will be sent to the planning inspector. He will chair the crucial examination this summer into the local plan's proposals and listen to arguments for and against them before he issues his final decision.

Cheque mates help charities CAKE bakes at Felpham Community College have helped to save lives.

The tasty treats were among the recordbreaking fundraising activities staged by the college's sixth form charity committee in the latest charity week.

The £3,300 proceeds from the events were presented at the college to three charities - Cancer Research UK, Chestnut Tree House children's hospice and Help for Heroes - last week.

Georgia Henton, one of the college's sixth form charity committee chairmen, said: "It was very worthwhile to stage the charity week. The whole point is to let everyone get involved.

"It's a really good way to let everyone do their bit and have some fun. It's a way of relaxing as well as raising money.

"It's amazing to think that a cake sale can help to save someone's life. When you are doing it, it seems so insignificant and small but, as soon as you see how much good it can do, it is amazing."

The college's charity week has been staged annually each February for well over 20 years. But this year's was the first to reach £3,300. The proceeds will be split equally between the charities.

Georgia was helped by her fellow chairman Carly Jellett to show the activities which brought in the money.

As well as baking and selling cakes, they included a penny challenge for Year 7 students, sponging teachers, a dodgeball tournament and the all-action Felpham's Got Talent contest.

"We did really well this year," she said. "A big thank-you to everyone who took part and helped us to raise this much money.

All of your work has been really good."

Their fellow chairman, Alice Jarvis, greeted visitors to the cheque presentation.

One of the cheques was received by Sandy Parkinson, a volunteer for Cancer Research UK. "As a volunteer, I know how hard it is to raise money," she said.

The donation would help the charity towards its target of three out of every four cancer patients surviving, from two out of four, at least ten years. "This is a tough target to aim for and we work hard towards it every single day towards that becoming a reality," she said.

For Chestnut Tree House, community fundraiser officer Tracy Bowdery said it cost £3.5m a year to run the hospice and its community services. Only a small amount came from the government.

"The rest of it comes from amazing people like you," she said. "We really couldn't do our work without you. We are so grateful you agreed to support us. It's local children you are helping and you are providing these services for."

Help for Heroes local volunteer Keith Rule said the donation would help to injured servicemen and women.

"These people don't want charity. What they want is help getting back into society.

We support them, enable them and inspire them," he said.

The charities are chosen each year by all the college's students.

The five employees in Team Arena will be making the leap from a plane on June 9 in aid of St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester. This follows their participation for the hospice in Sunday's Bognor Prom 10k road race.

Class of '83 to relive Bognor schooldays MORE than 100 former classmates in Bognor Regis are set to get together again tomorrow.

Members of the Class of '83 at Bognor Regis Comprehensive School will be staging their first reunion.

Tales of life in the classrooms of the school at its former spilt sites of Westloats Lane and Pevensey Road are sure to make the hours fly past.

Good days, bad days, popular teachers and friendships will be revived at the event at Newtown Social Club.

One of those looking forward to rewinding the clock is Lisa Powis. She said: "A distant, but treasured, memory of mine was of

parties with friends on the beach. These were good times.

"People will be travelling to the reunion from as far away as Paignton

and Torquay, and even the USA. "Ex-pupils have caught up with old friends and someone recently met up with an

old friend in New Zealand, where they are now living."

The reunion is taking place as the school friends begin to turn 50.

Lisa grew up in Bognor Regis in a family of six. She and her twin brother were the joint youngest.

They began at the comprehensive school in 1978 at a time when it was massive, with 12 classes a year.

Lisa left in 1983 and her twin brother followed two years later after he had stayed on in the sixth form.

They moved away but often return to Bognor Regis to visit their parents.

The impetus for the reunion quickly grew from a Facebook page set up by another former pupil, Sue Davies, at the end of 2016.

Beginning with only a few members, it has grown to more than 170.

"I suggested a reunion," said Lisa.

"We hope to get over a 100 people attending. A huge thank-you must be said to Sue for setting this all in motion.

"We've had some mini-reunions to get people used to getting together as it can be quite daunting.

"Since one of our mini-reunions, two people have got together and are now engaged.

"It's been fantastic meeting up with everyone in the lead-up to the main event and the whole year group is really looking forward to tomorrow."

Klub's meal deal

They have been awarded a £300 grant for a dishwasher to make the meetings of 4Sight's Kitchen Klub less of a chore.

The machine is much needed after the six members with sight loss and three helpers have cooked their three-course meals.

A recent menu consisted of devilled mushrooms, Hawaiian chicken and rice salad - with onions, peppers and bacon - and rhubarb and strawberry crumble. Diners washed down the sumptuous meal with a couple of bottles of wine.

The Klub meets monthly on Wednesdays and Chichester resident Paul Voller, 48, said it was a day he always anticipated.

He was expertly cutting peppers for the meal in spite of having just five per cent vision.

"When I cut any ingredients, I always try to do it in the middle so it's the furthest part away from my fingers. I start with the whole item and then do that for the half and then the quarter.

"If I'm preparing something like tomatoes or apples, I will stand them upside down where the core comes out and that creates a flat area.

"I always look forward to coming to the Klub and seeing how everybody is and having a nice meal at the end of it.

"Coming here allows me to find out how to cook various foods. We can swap tips, talk to other people who have got eye conditions and have a laugh.

"It's important to be able to cook food safely and it's also important to try to eat as much food as possible which is healthy."

Paul, whose last job was building hand driers for toilets, has the progressive condition retinitis pigmentosa but he said it was important to live the best life he could.

"I usually cook at home once or twice a week. Sometimes, me and my daughter will just go for it and make a really big meal," he said. "But some cooking is trial and error.

"Meat is probably the trickiest ingredient to cook. So much of that is about its colour or texture. You can skewer it with a sharp instrument to see how easily it goes in.

"I usually try to remember how long it takes to cook, using my talking watch, and how far round I put the dial of my cooker, and repeat that if it works."

Accessible kitchen equipment can also help. It includes talking microwaves, like that at the 4Sight premises in Victoria Drive, talking ovens and grills.

The Klub has a £3 fee to cover the cost of ingredients. It was started and continues to be run some eight years later by Bognor Regis resident Shirley Buck.

Shirley, 78, has dry age-related macular degeneration but she said she was determined it would not affect her love of good food.

"Our members come here with a purpose.

They are not just sitting around talking about their eyes.

"They are working with people who have got the same problems but they just want to get on with what they are doing," she said.

Members also enjoy each others' company outside the kitchen as well. Shirley lays on two social gatherings a year at her home and organises occasional outings. The next is a trip along the Chichester Canal.

Shirley hopes to arrange a new book group for blind and partially sighted people. This is expected to start in Bognor Regis Library on a Wednesday this September.

` Festival in park IMAGINATIONS will be given free rein at a special event in Bognor Regis next week.

The town council is holding the free day of activities from 11am3pm on Wednesday in the beautiful surroundings of Hotham Park.

The Festival of the Imagination is intended to be a celebration of this year's 20th anniversary of World Book Day. A spokesman for the town council said: "It will feature everything from 'make and take' art and craft workshops to a mobile laser tag and giant bubbles to a book swap and lots more."

The town council has also arranged the latest sessions of its Funshine Days from July 31 to August 25 to make the summer holidays more interesting for the town's children and their parents with 20 days of free fun activities on the prom for families.

` Plants for sale A SALE of donated plants in aid of Bognor Regis Foodbank is taking place next week.

The chance to buy the plants which have been given by nurseries and garden centres in the area will take place from 10am-midday on June 3. The venue will be Opengate Church in Victoria Drive.

All the proceeds will go to the Foodbank's work in providing emergency meals for those in need.

Tee-mendous plans for new golf course f Bognor Regis firefighters take part in the campaign

Thumbs up for safety on roads FIREFIGHTERS from Bognor Regis were among those with a hands-on role in a safety campaign.

The crews from the town's fire station went out during a global road safety week and My Red Thumb Day. They were spreading the word about the need for better road safety by cutting the number of drivers who use their phone at the steering wheel and who drive too fast. They also posed for photos to support putting phones away while driving.

Gavin Watts, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's acting deputy fire officer, said: "I'm very proud of our service's commitment to campaigning for better road safety

across West Sussex.

"We do a huge amount of work to make our county's roads safer and it's fantastic to have the opportunity to highlight this during these initiatives.

"The important message to share now is that this work doesn't end here.

"Speeding and distracted driving will continue to cause accidents and collisions as long as drivers ignore the laws put in place to protect people."

Fire crews from Littlehampton, East Grinstead and Horsham were also among those who went out and about in their communities to pass on the message about the importance of good road safety.

PLAYING golf could become an adventure in Hotham Park in Bognor Regis.

Landscape contractor ISS wants to create the 18-hole facility to replace the park's putting green.

A statement by the designers of the new course, HM Adventure Golf, says: "The proposal includes a small lake and waterfall and also incorporates themed items and structures constructed from both natural materials and artistically carved 'concrete' render."

A woodland theme will be given to the golf course and its features will include a forest waterfall, a woodland trail around the course, a tree trunk hole and a Hotham House putt through obstacle.

"The theming associated with the adventure golf experience is essential to underpin the business itself," the statement adds.

"The themed structures allow for the facility to be an attractive development that people will use repeatedly."

The proposed golf course of some 1,500 sq m in the north of the park. It is designed to cope with up to 70-80 players at a time and fit in with the park's historic integrity.

It is intended to extend the current car park with an extra 19 spaces. But these could be provided by re-aligning the existing spaces instead.

The intended course will be surrounded by a 2m high anti-climb fence to help with security and control access.

Bank holiday wines don't have to break the bank!

Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

BANK holiday weekend beckons and, although I cannot guarantee the weather, I can promise you 25 per cent off offers at both M&S and this week's featured wine retailer, Tesco's, on six bottles or more.

The Tesco's offer expires on May 29 and you will be pleased to ascertain that you are allowed to purchase up to 36 bottles, if that is your wont!

Back to the vine, the offer price tantalised me sufficiently to seek to procure some of the more expensive wines, given that the reduction is thereby greater , and I initiated my quest with the acquisition of a 2016 Tesco's finest 2016 Pouilly Fumé reducing from £12 to a mere £9, if one of six bottles or more, and all subsequent prices I quote, for the sake of brevity, will have regard to this bank holiday reduction!

This wine is delightfully clean on the palate, has finely balanced acidity coupled with a lingering after-taste and is a good example of gooseberry and citrus flavours that are slightly understated with a touch of flint and is a safe buy at this enticing price!

For just £3 more, the Château de Rully I er Cru La Pucelle, a vineyard dating back to the 12th century, with the name La Pucelle

referring to the youngest daughter being accorded an inheritance, is delightfully fragrant with creamy vanilla and a long finish and is a wine with a distinctive taste that could regale your taste buds!

I next averted my attention to a rosé wine, namely a 2015 Côtes de Provence, which proved to be dry, very palatable, smooth and an ideal picnic wine at a reduced £6.

In terms of reds, a veritable bargain enthralled me in the form of a Castillo San Lorenzo Reserva 2010 on offer at a

measly £4.50. This exhibited strawberry and plum fruit along with well-rounded tannins balanced with some vanilla oak culminating in a subtle spicy finish and a wine to procure post haste at this low price!

Two other reds come into the bargain category in the form of two past favourites of mine, commencing with the 2015 Ogio Primitivo on offer for a paltry £3.75, a most palatable wine from the Puglia region, in the heel of Italy's boot, and exuding soft juiciness bursting with spicy blackcurrant

and raspberry fruit flavours. Fill your boots at this offer price!

The second red, on offer at a miserly £4.13, is the Telegraph Station Pinot Noir from south Australia, and is definitely worth a punt! This wine is a subtle, light, summery red with raspberry and black cherry flavours and a hint of spice. It's also amazing value for a Pinot Noir!

Now venturing in the more expensive section, I happened upon a 2014 Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec for the princely reduced sum of £12. This is a big , complex wine exhibiting juicy fruit flavour with subtle hints of sweetness. Well-balanced, with dry and tart aromas of red berry fruits and on the palate blackberry, cherry and

Method

INGREDIENTS • 4 lemon sole or dab fillets , skin on, from sustainable sources • 1 lime CHIPOTLE & ANCHO CHILLI RECADO • 4 cloves of garlic • 2 dried chipotle chillies • 2 dried ancho chillies • 1½ tablespoon dried oregano • ½ a lime CHUNKY AVOCADO & CHERRY TOMATO SALAD • 14 ripe cherry tomatoes • 1 Lebanese cucumber • 3 spring onions • 1 ripe avocado • extra virgin olive oil • 1 lime

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/ gas 4.

To make the recado, place the unpeeled garlic in a small roasting tin and roast for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cloves are soft.

Transfer to a plate, allow to cool, then remove the skins.

However, my pièce de résistance this week is the Tesco's finest Mendoza Malbec of either 2015 or 2016 vintage with a mouthwatering price of just £ 5.63 - a veritable gem exuding blackberry and plum flavours with a subtle hint of spice produced in high altitude vineyards and a wine I will regularly add to my collection, given its undoubted quality! This weekend, wend your way to Tesco's to avail yourself of these oenological offers and ultimately enjoy!

Place the chipotle and ancho chillies in a small bowl. Pour over boiling water to just cover and leave for 15 minutes to soak. Drain in a colander, reserving the liquid.

Place the chillies, garlic, oregano and a large pinch of sea salt in a food processor and blend to a paste. Add the lime juice and 4 tablespoons of the reserved liquid and blitz to combine. Transfer to a non-reactive bowl.

Place the fish in the marinade, cover with clingfilm and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

For the salad, halve the tomatoes and slice the cucumber and spring onions. Halve, destone and roughly chop the avocado.

Combine in a bowl with 3 tablespoons of oil and the lime juice. Season well.

7.

Preheat a barbecue or cast-iron griddle pan to a medium heat. Remove the fish from the refrigerator and cook, turning once, for about 3 minutes each side, occasionally adding some more marinade with a brush during cooking.

8.

Divide the fish among plates and serve with the avocado salad and freshly squeezed lime wedges.

Method

INGREDIENTS • 500g pack frozen mixed berry, we used summer berry mix, defrosted • 150g red cherry jam • 300-350g Madeira cake, cut into roughly 3cm cubes • 500ml tub custard • 250g tub mascarpone • 5 tbsp caster sugar • 400ml double cream • 3 tbsp sherry • berries, grated chocolate or rose petals, to decorate

1.

Mix the berries and cherry jam together, and spoon into your trifle bowl. Scatter over the Madeira cake and push down a little into the berries.

Put the custard, mascarpone and 3 tbsp sugar in a bowl together and beat

until smooth, then dollop all over the trifle. Put the double cream, remaining 2 tbsp sugar and sherry in a bowl and beat until soft peaks form.

Cling film both the trifle bowl and cream and chill until ready to serve. You can do this up to 24 hours in advance.

To serve, spoon the sherry cream all over the trifle, then scatter with your favourite decoration.

Use diet to control your cholesterol IF YOU have just been diagnosed with high cholesterol, don’t despair!

You don’t need to go on any hard-core drugs, or panic that it will be this way forever and your health is at risk for the rest of your life.

It’s all in the diet! Eat clean and fresh! Take control of your own health by eating yourself well! Turning your health around does take effort, but this effort could actually save your life! Need I say more...

So what should you be eating?

1. If you're looking to lower your cholesterol, the key may be simply changing your morning meal.

Switching up your breakfast to contain two servings of oats can lower LDL ('bad') cholesterol by 5.3% in only six weeks.

The key to this cholesterol buster is beta-glucan, a substance in oats that absorbs LDL, which your body then excretes.

2. If you're looking for a snack food that lowers cholesterol levels, research shows that you should get cracking!

Apparently people who ate 1.5 oz of whole walnuts six days a week for a month lowered their total cholesterol by 5.4% and LDL cholesterol by 9.3%. Almonds and cashews are other good options.

However, while nuts are heart healthy, they're also high in calories, so practice portion control.

1.5 oz is about a shot glass and a half. Use a shot glass to measure out your portion so you can see exactly how it looks.

3. Beans, beans—they really are good for your

clogging plaque at its earliest stage by keeping cholesterol particles from sticking to artery walls. Try for two to four fresh cloves a day.

5. Greens and more greens!

Popeye ate it, and so should you! This popular green food contains lots of lutein, the sunshineyellow pigment found in dark green leafy vegetables and egg yolks.

Lutein already has a reputation for guarding against age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness. Just ½ cup of a lutein-rich food daily also guards against heart attacks by helping artery walls "shrug off" cholesterol invaders that cause clogging.

Look for bags of baby spinach leaves that you can use for salads or lightly steam with fresh fish.

6. Avocadosmare a great source of heart-healthy MUFAs, which may actually help raise HDL cholesterol while lowering LDL. And, more than any other fruit, this delectable food packs cholesterol-smashing beta-sitosterol, a beneficial plant-based fat that reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food.

7. Asparagus is one of the top performers, as well as green beans, beets, eggplant, cauliflower, carrots, and okra.

By steaming them you’re actually forcing your liver to use up more LDL cholesterol in order to digest them, which means lower LDL levels in your bloodstream.

8. Broccoli is loaded with vitamin K which can protect against arterial calcification or hardening

of arteries. LDL cholesterol can lead to serious heart conditions. Insufficient vitamin K accelerates arterial calcification. This vegetable is also packed with fibre which helps to normalize blood pressure.

Consuming broccoli every day can also help you lose weight. So everyone’s a winner!

Community News & Views THIS is the first in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which will cover the start of a new era for its work.

AMIRI Construction is thrilled to have been awarded a very special project for the Aldingbourne Trust. The contract at the Aldingbourne Country Centre will see Amiri Construction deliver a three-storey conference facility that has been funded by their own efforts and will include: a conference centre for 100 people comprising a new entrance, reception, shop, WCs and changing facilities, a new café for visitors and staff offices.

Aldingbourne Trust is a local enterprise that helps people with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else to live independent lives. The new building, pictured below, will enable it to continue its support of local businesses, communities and the people it supports to develop their skills and lead an independent life.

Over ten years ago, a group of people it supports, volunteers, staff and trustees formed a development group to explore how they could make the best use of their site at the Aldingbourne

Country Centre. They were becoming aware of a growing demand for meaningful support for people with learning disabilities, and wanted to design a site which would work for future generations.

They did a lot of market research, visiting places, speaking to people, running workshops and undertook a feasibility study to guide their thinking. During this time, the centre and its approach to social enterprise have really grown - an open farm, mini-golf, woodland walk, beekeeping, wood recycling, Forest Schools, horse rug-washing, adopting railway stations, digital media and music workshops, Sussex Saddlebacks pigs and their maze have all helped them to become a well-known and muchloved destination for families and local businesses.

It’s a winning combination – people who are supported have more training and employment opportunities and the customers have a great experience at the centre. In 2010, the trust got the chance to buy some adjoining land which had been used as a quarry – this helped shape the agreement for a masterplan for the site which includes the new Quarry Building.

In 2012, the trust obtained planning permission and has been raising funds ever since. Preparations began last year for the main works, with extra parking and improving the access road.

Thursday, March 2, marked a day that will go into the history books for the trust... almost 40 years after its start, clients, staff, volunteers and trustees were invited to pick up a spade and start digging the footings. They came from near and far, and as a team, they made the first dig.

With the site cleared, pictured below, work has commenced on the foundations and the new building is well underway!

HELPERS at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester are back behind their counter.

THe Friends of Chichester Hospitals have resumed serving customers after the opening of their new shop.

Customers began to flock into the premises in the hospital's outpatients department, pictured below, after an informal ribbon cutting by Rosemary Billinghurst, one of the longest-serving volunteers at 31 years.

Friends' chairman Jane Ramage said: "Everyone is really excited and pleased to be back in business.

"The new shop is bright and inviting and the volunteers are delighted to see so many longterm customers again after the break."

The Friends had been without a shop for several weeks after their previous premises were taken over for a commercial outlet.

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the operator of St Richard's, provided the new location.

The much-valued shop helped the Friends raise £80,000 last year to spend on

medical and other equipment for the hospital's patients thanks to the thousands of hours given by its members.

They spent the final days before the shop's opening by ensuring its shelves were stocked with its popular range of funky and attractive gifts, snacks, newspapers, magazines and toiletries.

The shop is increasing its stock of healthier food items, like sugar-free sweets and low sugar drinks.

Customers with dietary intolerances can buy glutenfree biscuits and low-fat snacks. Medical aids, such as folding walking sticks, have also been introduced after requests from the hospital's physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Mrs Ramage praised the volunteers for continuing their trolley service to inpatients while the shop was closed but said the outlet had been much missed.

"This is a new beginning and we are confident that the shop has a bright future," she said.

The trust's chairman, Mike Viggers, said the Friends' work was enormously appreciated.

Sir, With regard to the article, 'Noise Fears over pre-school plans’, reported at the time of the committee hearing in Littlehampton on April 26, this appears to be a one-sided report and I would like to point out some inaccuracies.

Firstly, we are not objecting to a play school expanding in Aldwick. They have an alternative. Our complaint is its nearness.

It is not correct Simon Davis said he proposed limiting the garden area's use to 9am to 12.30pm weekdays - this is the current regulation approved by Arun Council.

Cllr Hitchins said 'there is a need for these facilities' but went on to discuss noise and issues that residents suffer. He quoted another playgroup which requested permission for extra children and hours but was refused because of the noise.

He, with the majority of the committee, were for protecting residents against noise and voted for a deferral stating noise as the issue. Noise continues unabated.

Lee Austin states he completely understands residents’ needs and does not wish to upset anyone. We met with the playgroup before they began, stating our concerns. Dizzy Ducklings were written to at least twice before environmental health were involved.

The playgroup, despite saying they finish at 1pm, finish at 2pm most days, carers leaving at 2.30pm. They state they do not operate during holidays but nine clubs in the summer are advertised for five to 11-year-olds for most of the day.

As mentioned at the hearing, if Dizzy Ducklings wished to expand, why did they give up the hall at Willowhale, with facilities for 55 children? This was not annoying anyone and was on a site with a doctors' surgery, library and council offices.

For us, the noise starts at 9am when cars arrive. At 9.15am, children come outside, leaving the side door of the hall open, where noise emits and echoes around the narrow garden. Even in the rain, they are out for more than two hours.

Without windows open and TV on we can still hear screams and crying. Equipment is extremely close to our hedge. There is no peace until later in the afternoon. A lot of the problems could be avoided with some consideration.

A small playgroup did reside here for years but had only 15 children and three helpers. They played further away and could hardly be heard. Space could be made for Dizzy Ducklings to play at the front of the church with barriers but this was dismissed.

It is the closeness of outdoor play we are complaining about.

We have grandchildren and are not against children having fun but crying and screaming children for at three-plus hours every weekday in what may as well be our garden is not something we wish for.

Sir, One recent issue alone of the Bognor Regis Post (May 12) presented a succession of sorry stories on the quality of decisions being made for Bognor Regis by Arun District Council.

On the front page was a report the town council may have to leave its historic town hall home should the building be sold off by Arun to a pub/ restaurant company.

The following pages reported how supposedly protected trees along the A259 were being felled to make way for a £1.4m cycle path – hardly very ‘green’.

Reading on revealed protests against the installation of new eyesore Portaloos on the prom, instead of making existing underground toilets more accessible.

That story also referred to Arun's other seafrontdisfiguring idea of moving the vintage bandstand elsewhere.

Beyond these reports are the bigger issues of the failure by Arun to come up with a local plan to regulate new housing and the longstanding open question of regeneration, huge amounts of public money already having been wasted on ill-considered options.

Arun’s latest proposals appear largely to be two new gardens, albeit one under a striking glass roof. It may be early days for these proposals but, so far, it’s hard to envisage how this will truly attract more visitors to the town.

A previous letter-writer highlighted a county councillor’s election statement WSCC provides 80 per cent of our local services. The current pressure to save public funds and this growing catalogue of damaging decisions only feeds the question of why Arun District Council exists at all.

Manor has provided a home for centuries

Archbishop Peckham visited 'Nywetymber' in 1281 WHEN carrying out research on any subject you can find information on a wide range of different aspects of history. This occurred to me when researching the churches in our area and I came across a reference to the oldest inhabited house in England, that of Barton Manor, which reportedly dates from 800 AD. There are a number of records, including that in 1281, when Archbishop Peckham wrote to the abbot Ghent from ‘Nywetymber’ (note the spelling) and to the Bishop of Rochester with accounts of the tenants.

Later, Barton Manor was leased by the Archbishop to farmers and Thomas Morrell held a lease in 1504 but eventually the manor became the possession of the crown, and Queen Elizabeth I granted it in 1560 to Edward Darell, a royal official who was The Clerk of the Queen’s Catery. He is remembered in St Thomas A’ Becket Church.

In 1675, the farm/manor was purchased by James Ballett and remained in his family for 250 years.

His descendent was a name of interest in the area, that of William Holland Ballett Fletcher - also owner of Hotham Park House - who had the manor which he restored in 1902. William is credited with preserving

the Saxon aula and the 12th century chapel.

It is also reported that Arthur Conan Doyle visited the manor for inspiration with some of his Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

One of his early stories, The Musgrave Ritual, was allegedly written when he was about 25 years of age, in which he wrote of ‘perhaps the oldest inhabited house in the country with enormously thick walls'. The only place to fit these clues is Barton Manor.

A report in 1903 stated that the greater part of the house formed an ecclesiastical building, with the chapel dating from the 13th century, while a building running at right angles to the chapel is ‘certainly 11th century, if not pre-Conquest and looks like the ‘aula of the original manor.’ It is certainly interesting reading a diverse range of accurate reports of the time, which conflicts with today’s knowledge.

Mr HLFG Guermonprez also contributed to the story in 1903 when he thought there was a possibility that the building dated from the granting of the Manor of Pagham to St. Wilfrid, in the year AD 687.

When looking at history we tend to remember major events, such as the Spanish Armada (1588) and William the Conqueror (1066); but it is more difficult to put into

this equation that Barton Manor was also in existence during these times, providing homes and employment to the people of the area. It was originally thought to be a small estate which possibly produced barley as the main crop, i.e. Bere-ton, Barley Farm.

In 1929, there was another important visitor to Barton Manor when local historian Lindsay Fleming guided the Archbishop of Canterbury around Barton Manor while the Bishop was also convalescing in Pagham at the time of King George V’s stay at Craigweil.

An article was written in 1944 by FT AshtonGwatkin, who was renowned as a travelled minister in the British diplomatic service, and arrived to live in the manor in 1948. His article published in The Countryman paints a wonderful picture and I make no apology for reprinting his words: “We start from Regnun, which is now Chichester, taking the Southern Road towards Manhood End, and passing the Waste Lands and the Forgotten Harbour and the Broken Quay and the Old Mill and the Crab and Lobster Inn and the Last Farm: thence along a narrow embankment with the Dead Lagoon on the right-hand side and the Green Pastures on the left. Here, there are no more human habitations, but many seabirds wheeling and wailing.”

And the story continues: “From this transitory stage we emerge on the other side beyond the sluice gates, with the Church of St. Thomas A’Beckett on the right and the ruined wall of the palace where Anselm was made Archbishop; and thence the path crosses some fields to a hamlet with two inns, the Bear and the Lamb. Up a lane behind the Lamb is the oldest house in England.”

While Ashton-Gwatkin does record other older premises in Britain, he reports that Barton Manor is little more than a large cottage, which contains a fair-sized chapel (dedication unknown) of the 12th century and the remains of the hall of a small Saxon manor house.

I have visited the area and, of course, it has been totally transformed. I took a drive down to the manor through a beautiful country lane, with the duck pond, and some very interesting homes.

At the end of the lane is a gated retirement complex which provides a wonderful, restful short or long-term rental home for those seeking the tranquility of the countryside in a wonderfully interesting historical setting.

The age of the premises can be determined from many of the materials used such as the masonry stones quarried from the sea nearby and laid slantwise in the characteristic herringbone pattern.

This, and other materials, are still on view in parts of the nine rental apartments that have been created in the manor. For someone, they have the added distinction of living in the 12th century chapel which is part of a ground floor apartment overlooking the garden which looked wonderful.

It is difficult to perceive ‘the oldest inhabited house’ to still be in our midst when so much of our discussions these days are of the future and the increase in the number of homes to be built in the area.

Let us hope that this legacy continues for future generations in whatever format it is allowed to exist.

Crawley's Westlake takes crown as PostSport Bognor 10k marks record turnout A RECORD turnout for the Bognor 10km saw hundreds of people complete the seafront course, with many cheered on to personal bests.

James Westlake, of Crawley Atheltics Club, was the winner, with a time of 31 minutes 47 seconds, less than a month after finishing 27th in the London Marathon.

He was followed by Lewes Athletic Club's Matt Bradford (32:30) while Chichester Runners' James Baker (33:05) completed the top-three.

In the women's race, Johanna Spannagl of Horsham Blue Star sprinted home in 38:50 to be crowned female champion.

Cheltenham Harriers' Shona CrombieHicks came home in second, while Chichester Runners' Lucy Thraves (41:00) was third.

There was plenty to cheer for the home crowd, too, with 76 runners from Bognor Tone Zone taking part in the Bognor Rotary Club event.

Simon Gill was the first club runner to get back to West Park, finishing in an excellent sixth overall in 33:41.

Kari Mack won her over 40 age category, coming home in 41.26 ,which also made

fourth overall in the ladies race.

She said: "It was so great to see all the Tone Zone gang and such a great turnout on a beautiful day. Very well done everyone."

One runner who really got into the beat of the race was Luke Simmonds.

Afterwards, he said: "I'm pretty pleased with my Bognor 10k time of 43:48. I'm definitely not on form, as I had to work rather hard for it.

"My average heart rate was 186bpm, with a max of 196. I think people could've heard me huffing if they stood at the finish line, when I was at mile four!"

Five of the Bognor runners achieved PBs despite the heat: Colin Hiscock (39:40), Juliet Stallard (43:25), Jess Thomson (44:21), Claire Baker (54:00) and David Sinclair (54:35).

Among the new runners entering their first race were husband and wife duo Darren and Bella Cobby. They only started running in January and exceeded their expectations, coming home in 53:51 and 1:03:02.

Other first time runners were Ian Buchan (1:04:41), Zoe Hemes (1:07:03), Janice James (1:13:00) and Angela Money (1:15:48).

A club spokesman said: "What a great achievement from them all."

DARTS: Nathan Warren of BRSA Wanderers fired in an amazing 12 dart leg in week six of the Bognor Friday Summer Darts League.

His effort, which was part of 30 points per dart match, was not enough though to stop his side slumping to an 11-6 defeat to Squash Club.

CHICHESTER City Ladies' record year just keeps on getting better and better - with the under-16s team also getting in on the silverware act.

The youth team completed a league and cup double just days after the first team celebrated winning promotion to the FA Women's Premier League south after an unbeaten league campaign.

The first part was completed at the start of this month at Worthing FC against Withdean Youth.

Chichester took an early lead through Alex Collinghan. But Withdean proved to be clinical in front of goal, making it 3-1 with 25 minutes to go.

The deficit was reduced when Collinghan caused problems for the Withdean defence and the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Captain LouLou Robson then levelled the game 3-3 with a great strike from the edge of the box.

Into extra time, and despite Chi hitting the post twice, they could not find a winner so the

game went to penalties.

At this point it was anyone's game but Nicole Robinson pulled off some fantastic saves in goal for Chichester and Gracie White scored the final penalty to make it 3-2 on penalties and Chichester won.

They then followed this up the following Sunday with a 4-0 league victory against Southdowns, a hat trick for Robson and a goal from Collinghan sealing the win. This means they also won the Sussex County Women's and Girls U16s division with 17 wins in 18 games.

Club secretary Caroline Henry-Evans said: "Everyone at Chichester is extremely proud of their achievements this season and are looking forward to the many players who will be making the step up to senior ladies football next season." * Sidlesham FC is hosting a men's six-aside tournament on July 1 and a girls youth tournament on July 2.

Table-toppers Middleton go to Horsham full of confidence

MIDDLETON CC will be looking to make it three wins from four as they travel to Horsham tomorrow (12.30pm) hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Sussex Premier Division.

The Sports Club side sit one point clear in first after wrapping up a convincing six-wicket win against Ansty on Saturday.

After the visitors won the toss and elected to bat, the Middleton bowlers took no time to tear into the line-up.Matt Cooke (1 for 21) and Tommy Davies (2 for 25) both took early scalps before Craig Fowle (5 for 15) teared into the middle order, with Ansty eventually dismissed for just 95 in 34 overs.

In reply, Middleton did stutter, falling to 29 for 3 early on. But a quickfire 42* from Ben Hansford, with support from Patrick Colvin (19*) guided Sean Heather's side home with nearly 30 overs to spare.

That win took Middleton top of the ten team division. But with six of the sides winning two of their first three matches - among them tomorrow's opponent, Horsham, it will be tough for the newly-promoted Bognor team to stay there.

Bognor lose opener to Chi Bognor cruise to 150-run win

BOGNOR made an unsuccesful start to their West Sussex bowls league campaign, losing out to local rivals Chichester.

It has taken three weeks of the season until competitive action arrived to Waterloo Square. With the sun shining and a cool breeze off the sea, it was perfect conditions for a match of fours between two friendly local rivals.

It was Chi, though, who went home with the spoils, winning three of the four rinks with an 81-67 victory.

Bognor won just one match, taking two points from the encounter. The eight-point win was Chi's first victory of the season from their third game, after suffering two close defeats to Southbourne and East Preston.

Next up for the Priory Park side is an away match at Worthing on June 3. Bognor will make the same trip this weekend (tomorrow, 2pm).

In division two, Pagham started their league campaign with a 64-64 draw against Pulborough.

Thanks to winning two rinks to the

visitors' one, Pagham took six points.

Fellow division two side Bognor B will finally get their campaign up and running tomorrow (2pm) when they host Pulborough at Waterloo Square.

In division three, Middleton - whose last match against Worthing's Marine Gardens was rained off - will welcome Petworth to the Sports Ground tomorrow (2pm).

Elsewhere, Selsey's Little Spain had their first home match of the season against Witterings BC last Saturday and emerged as fine victors, 100-74, winning on three rinks and losing on the other two.

The following day Little Spain travelled to Emsworth for another friendly. The result was an excellent victory for Little Spain 80-69, winning on four of the five rinks.

This Sunday, Little Spain host one of their major events of the year with their annual Invitation Trophy.

Teams from around the area are taking part. It is a 10.30am start for the day-long event and spectators are very welcome.

BOGNOR CC chalked up their first win of the season with a convincing 150-run win against bottom side Portslade.

Max Ashmore's side have been unlucky so far this term, pushing their Sussex Division Two opponents close.

That good form paid off on Saturday in an excellent team performance which saw Bognor register their first 30 points of the season.

Sean Rutter (4 for 18) was the star for Pagham with the ball as they reduced Haywards Heath to 101 all out. The Nyetimber Lane side knocked off the total with six wickets and 15 overs to spare, Aiden Zammit top-scoring with an unbeaten 66.

Chi's win was a little closer, as Jonathon Heaven's side chased down Brighton & Hove seconds' total of 209 with one wicket and eight balls to spare.

The star at Goodwood was Jay Hartard, who helped Chi home with an unbeaten 94.

Next for Pagham is Crawley Eagles at Nyetimber tomorrow (12.30pm), while Priory Park travel to Eastbourne seconds (12.30pm).

In division five west, Middleton seconds took the spoils in the Bognor Regis area derby against Pagham seconds.

Stuart Nelmes (45) and Matthew Robinson (48) scored well as Middleton reached 235 before Pagham were bowled out for 103.

Tomorrow, Middleton seconds host Billingshurst seconds; Pagham travel to Worthing seconds; and Chichester Priory Park seconds, whose last game was rained off, welcome Broadwater to Goodwood.

Aldwick back up and running after arson ALDWICK CC is well and truly back in business after arsonists torched their clubhouse.

The club, based at the Felpham Oval in Brooks Lane, Bognor Regis, lost ÂŁ10,000-worth of equipment in the fire in February.

Volunteers have since been busy raising money and donations to ensure the club was ready for the start of the 2017 campaign.

The latest fund-raiser involved a visit from Ashes winner Matthew Hoggard, who was the main speaker at a dinner.

On the pitch, the good news is they are up and running in division three of the West Sussex Invitation League. The bad is that they have won only one of their three fixtures so far. The latest defeat came on Saturday when Aldwick suffered a 70-run loss at Belgrave

Adelaide. After dismissing the home side for 142 (Keelan Belcher 3-32), Aldwick struggled in reply to reach only 72.

The seconds, who play in division six, also slumped to defeat, losing to Lancing Manor by nine wickets after being bowled out for 74, Luke Spindler top-scoring with 24.

There was some relief on Sunday when the Sunday XI beat Rustington in a friendly at Felpham Oval.

Jamie Murphy (62) was the stand out for Aldwick as they batted first and reached 176 for 7 in 40 overs. In reply, a good team effort with the ball dismissed Rustington for 135.

Next up for Aldwick first is Three Bridges thirds who visit Felpham Oval tomorrow (1pm) while the seconds travel to Portslade thirds.

f Ollie Pearce is set to stay at Bognor for the coming season - although top scorer James Fraser is moving on

Rebuilding of the Rocks begins - but Fraser and Budd move on THE Rocks' rebuilding process is underway - although top scorer James Fraser will not be at Nyewood as Bognor return to National League South.

Less than a month after the Rocks secured promotion on that memorable day against Dulwich, club officials are starting to put together a squad for the new season.

With manager Jamie Howell departing for Eastbourne Borough, it's up to general manager Jack Pearce and assistant Darin Kilpatrick to recruit and retain the talent.

The Post can now reveal that Jimmy Muitt and Doug Tuck have signed papers to return to Nyewood next season.

James Crane, Ollie Pearce, Chad Field and Harvey Whyte are also set to put pen to paper in the coming days.

The Rocks have also added talented young centre half Corey Heath, a former Bognor youth player, who rejoins from Ryman Premier side Worthing, while 17-year-old Tommy Block is also on the books.

However, Pearce has confirmed that last year's top scorer, Fraser, and fan favourite Darren Budd will not be returning due to "individual circumstances".

Pearce said: "There's no one we have spoken to yet that's said they won't sign.

"We are keen to keep the nucleus of the side together.

"One of the reasons we did so well was the

team spirit and we need to build on that and move forward with that."

On Fraser and Budd departing, he said: "Our circumstances have changed due to the level we are now playing at and because of that both have decided that their own personal interests will take them elsewhere.

"Both have been at the club on two occasions. They have great respect for what we do and the club has great respect for them as individuals and players.

"There's no falling out, no not agreeing terms, it's just individual circumstances and we wish them both all the best."

Pearce was particularly excited with the addition of Heath, a young centre half who came through the youth ranks at Nyewood and worked with Kilpatrick at college.

He added the club was keen to talk to Sami El-Abd, Gary Charman and Alex Parsons in the coming week.

The long-standing club man also confirmed that the Rocks were keen to retain the services of goalkeeper Dan Lincoln.

However, Pearce said that a number of clubs had shown an interest in snapping up the talented stopper.

Pearce said: "We've not given up hope he will sign."

"I'm hopeful they will all stay. But it's like everything - we will have a negotiation and then see what happens."

'Your club needs help to thrive' OVER the years, Bognor general manager Jack Pearce has done pretty much every job going at Nyewood Lane.

But with the club on the rise and returning to National League South, the man who has devoted his entire life to the Rocks is calling for keen-spirited supporters to come forward and help the club thrive.

Pearce said: " If we are going to compete in market for players then we need to step things up off the pitch.

"There's lots more things the club has to do in terms of match day arrangement and many jobs in the football club that need doing.

"We wish to free up as much money which we earn to spend on players and only way we can do that is by getting volunteers.

"We are looking for people who are perhaps retired who still have skills - such as those with a trade or a background in accountancy or administration.

"There are lots of areas where people can get job satisfaction; the only thing they won't get is the finance. But if people can give two or three hours a week then that will make a big difference to the whole club."

IN THE past few days I have agreed terms to stay at Nyewood Lane for the next season.

I think I've been quite clear that I wanted to stay.

I've been at the club a long time and general manager Jack Pearce was keen to keep me on so it just made sense to commit for another year.

Some of you may be thinking how signing a new deal with a National League South club relates to those in the Premier League.

From a player's point of view, it is quite similar.

At the end of the season, there is a bit of time when players have no contract with the club they have just played for. That means they can see what comes in terms of other clubs; or they can just wait for the current manager to ring them up.

Jack likes to do things faceto-face which makes things easier for us; others like to do things a bit cloak and daggerlike by keeping contact to phones so there's no real trace who they are interested in.

When Jack called, he arranged a meeting to come round and have a chat.

We both spoke about our thoughts for the next year, where we want to be and the players we want to keep, as well as those players who may not be around for the next season.

Then we talk figures and at the end both parties go their own ways. The player then waits a few days to mull things over and then if they want to stay, they will make a call back to say they agree terms.

Most players at our level are on nine month contracts which just cover the season, so it starts in July and goes up to the start of May. I'm unsure who else has signed on to stay with Bognor next season.

What I do know is that a lot of the lads are keen to stay. We have gone up a league. A lot of the lads are ambitious people.

Some of the squad have played at this level before.

Those who haven't want to give it a go, so I like to think the

nucleus of the side will be the same.

I know a lot of the boys have made their loyalties clear and definitely want to stay so we will just have to wait and see how things pan out.

Then there's the situation with the manager, which should be unsettling.

However, because we have the backroom staff which are so fixed in place, the day-today running of things in terms of players will be more of the same.

Dabba [Darin Kilpatrick] is, of course, massively influential and [fitness coach] Neil [Cockcroft] takes the most of the pre-season.

Whoever we get in, they will be working with Dabba, which is a plus and I have got every faith with him to get the best personnel in terms of formation and of shape that we need to do well.

It's actually quite exciting - even if it's not something I have experienced too much before.

I actually signed when Mick Jenkins was manager and when he departed Dabba was my first real manager.

He always said, though, that he was a coach and he wants to have his impact on the training pitch and man management was not his thing so then Jamie came in and he's been there ever since.

The new manager will be someone entirely new for me.

Dabba I knew from college so it will be first time I've had a new manager that I didn't know on a personal level.

But I've been around long enough to know what's expected and I will do everything I can to deliver.

For now, though, the focus is on rest. I'm going away in the summer as I'm getting married. It will be nice to have a break and come back for the new season fresh and rested.

It's now that I get most time to do that with half-term and the end of the season coming around the same time. So it's on to the stag do and then I'll be back in a few weeks to prepare myself for the new season.
