Warning about debt problems PROBLEM debts are affecting the lives of Bognor Regis residents as young as their early 20s.

A financial advice charity has warned money difficulties are being faced by a wide range of people in the town.

CAP debt centre manager Liddy Blunden said some of the clients she helped were in a dire financial situation.

At the moment she is assisting 36 of these clients. "Some people are very

desperate," she said.

"They are really anxious and everything is out of control. A couple of people I'm helping at the moment have got eviction notices because they have not been paying their rent.

"There is one young woman in her early 20s and there are pensioners as well but the majority of people I help are in their forties.

"When we get chatting, they are really

appreciative that someone is helping them. They feel amazing when they pay off their debts."

The amount of money owed by those who seek assistance sometimes exceeded £10,000, she said, but it was usually less than that. Her clients' inability to pay was as much about a lack of budgeting abilities and their overall financial situation than the total level of their bills.

The centre is based in the Vineyard Church in Waterloo Square and is run by the Christians Against Poverty group.

This has been established in the town for ten years and Liddy joined in 2016.

The service is open to those of all faiths and none. Liddy's current clients include a Buddhist and a Muslim.

Meeting will fight housing A RESIDENTS' meeting is being held to fight 'ridiculous' plans for thousands of homes in North Bersted.

Bersted Parish Council is holding the open air event next week to enable hundreds of people to find out about the latest proposals.

Its publicity for the occasion raises the prospect of the creation of 'Bogchester' as the urban areas around Bognor Regis and Chichester merge to form one large settlement which swallows up the current farmland.

The meeting will take place at 7pm on May 12 on Jubilee Fields, next to Jubilee Hall, off Chalcraft Lane.

Council chairman Cllr Brian Knight said: "The aim is to hear from as many people as possible and to advise them how they can best respond to these ridiculous plans.

"With Arun District Council's revised local plan out for consultation, it is vital that we act now."

Arun wants to earmark an area of farmland off Chalcraft Lane to enable it to be concreted over for about 3,000 homes in a development it has called West Bersted.

This is in addition to 1,000-plus homes proposed for Pagham and some 2,500 homes intended to be built at Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate.

Cllr Knight called for the meeting, as reported, and was backed by his fellow councillors to enable the scale of

development to be highlighted.

"There is no justification for such largescale development and the majority of houses will be bought by people from outside the district.

"Local residents are afraid that such a large influx of people would completely overwhelm the existing infrastructure such as schools, medical services, water and sewage and transport.

"The recent cancellation of the planned improvements to the A27 at Chichester means that commuters would struggle to get to and from work and the road system would be gridlocked at peak times.

"Additionally, in the light of Brexit, building on prime agricultural land when we may need to grow more of our own food is crazy."

Both Aldwick and Pagham parish councils will be represented at the meeting to reflect the fact they will be similarly affected if the large scale development goes ahead.

The Chalcraft Lane scheme was first put forward about ten years ago by the Church Commissioners as the Bognor Regis Eco Quarter.

A range of houses, land for jobs and community facilities was proposed.

But the plans, which were strongly opposed, were never formally decided

by Arun before they were withdrawn by the commissioners.

Arun is consulting on the current version of its local plan until May 30.

Felpham's council to stand ground on Neighbourhood Plan THERE is no room for more housing in Felpham, councillors have agreed.

At a Neighbourhood Plan committee meeting last month, Arun District Council asked Felpham Parish Council to once again identify sites for development.

However, the general consensus at a parish council meeting this week was that no new sites could be found.

Cllr Michael Harvey believed the plan did not need further consideration. He said: “We spent a lot of time and money on the Neighbourhood Plan. We should stick with it. Felpham is full."

Others explained the necessity to look

over the plan again.

Cllr Hilary Flynn said: “The plan is meant to be revisited and reviewed.

There is a requirement to look at it.”

Newly-elected chairman, Cllr David Smart, agreed: “We are reaffirming our current position by saying we are looking at it.”

The decision made was to stand by their previous resolution that no new sites were available, although the plan would still be discussed at the next committee meeting.

Clerk to the council, Richard Wickens, said: “We’re not going to make any alterations."

Debt worries cause people to turn to service for help

Flooding scheme set to be backed

From page one Courses in both areas for those who need help with money management or find themselves with debts which are starting to mount. The free course consists of three informal sessions. Each last two hours and enables participants to improve their ability to manage money, encourages them to take a fresh look at their finances and budget successfully.

The next course is taking place in Chichester at 10.30am from next Tuesday at St Pancras Hall in St Pancras.

In Bognor Regis, a course will be held from 7pm on June 7 at the Foodbank in Argyle Road. The previous course in the town had 15 participants.

CAP was founded nationally in 1996.

It is the largest provider of face-to-face financial education in the UK. Its debt centres in Bognor Regis and Chichester

are among six in West Sussex.

Liddy, pictured above left, said: "We are not in competition with Citizen's Advice or anyone else. We are the only financial advice organisation that goes into people's homes and sits with them, go through their finances and get people to take responsibility.

"Visiting people in their homes relaxes them and helps them to open up to me. I can find their financial problems are linked to other issues like health or mental health.

"The main cause of debt is utility bills, including council tax, credit cards and mobile phone bills."

Peter Sutton, above right, who runs the money courses in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "People who are vulnerable as a result of debt will take out what they think is easy money and get

themselves more and more into debt.

"Some of them will put their bills into a drawer and go into denial about them.

"What we do find is that someone who has big debts could be paying back £50 a month but only £30 is going towards the debt. The rest is paying off their interest.

"People put spending on their credit cards and then can't afford it. That's where the banks make their money."

One method CAP uses to tackle debt is to set up a plan where all the debts are consolidated into one account handled by its head office staff in Bradford and the individual debts are paid from that.

CAP can also help people back into work. One of those Liddy has helped in Bognor Regis has got a job as a chef.

She also works with Stonepillow to help its homeless clients move back into the mainstream financial world.

A LONG-RUNNING campaign to keep Pagham safe is set to succeed.

Residents were told this week the approval of the £750,000 scheme to ensure Pagham Beach continues to protect low-lying areas was close.

Robin Henderson, who heads the Pagham Flood Defence Steering Group, said he expected approval from the government to the project to cut a channel in the Church Norton Spit by the end of this month.

Support from the secretary of state for the environment is needed because the work is next to Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

"This has been a long and hard project because of its location and complexity," he told the annual electors' meeting.

The group has worked closely with Pagham Parish Council for the past few years to compile a comprehensive project to stop the spit causing currents which have scoured the beach of shingle.

Once approval is given, the group will set up a community interest company to take over the scheme from the parish council to give the best chance of raising the tens of thousands of pounds still needed to fund the project.

But he warned time was against any work being carried out this year

because of the constraints to protect the birds in the nature reserve.

"The spring season ends in early August and the winter overstaying season starts in November," he said.

"So, it will be very tight to do anything this year but we will do our best."

He said the amount which still needed to be raised to pay for the work would be unknown until the final surveys had been carried out to take account of the movement of shingle caused by the tides.

Parish council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said he was sure Arun District Council was happy with the maintenance plans for the channel to mean it was about to approve the work after 18 months of consideration to pave the way for the government's backing.

"We seem to have broken the barriers which seem to have existed all this time," he said.

Areas of the beach had been eroded so much they were below the flood resilience level to leave them at risk of being breached in storms.

He said: "There are up to 3,000 homes in Pagham vulnerable if there was a breach. We can't let that happen."

Cllr Mike Cole said: "People don't realise there would not be just one flood. There would be flooding every high tide."

Potential town criers have just a few hours to apply to become the new Bognor Regis town crier.

The closing date for applications is 5pm tonight.

The person is being sought by the town council to provide some colour and interest at civic events during the year.

As a spokesman for the council put it: "A new town crier is what we need, "If you are interested, please proceed, "But our role description you must read.

"So enter our competition, "We look forward to your submission."

The position is unpaid but travel expenses are likely to be covered. A town crier uniform will be provided.

Applicants must be aged 18 years and over.

An application pack can be downloaded from bognorregisgov.uk or from the town council's offices in the town hall.

` Museum sale A SALE of old and discontinued books relating to Bognor Regis and Sussex will take place this month.

The printed bargains will be on offer from 10am-4pm on May 20 at the town's museum in West Street.

As well as the local books, there will also be plenty of books of general history and general interest on sale as well for bargain-hunters to look through.

Noise fears over pre-school plans NEIGHBOURS' concerns about noise have delayed a pre-school's attempt to expand in Aldwick.

The proposal by Dizzy Ducklings to expand from 30 to 48 children was deferred by councillors.

They said they wanted to find out if more could be done to limit the impact of the sounds from the children using the outdoor play area at the pre-school's meeting place in Mosse Hall.

A condition which limits the number of children enjoying the play area to 16 at a time was considered to be insufficient on its own. The councillors wanted to see if a sound-deflecting fence or other noise limiting device could be installed along the play area's boundary.

One of the neighbours, Joan Jacobs, said: "The children play outside every day regardless of the weather. There is no respite.

"They are 20 feet away from our living area. The noise stops the enjoyment of our property and noise.

"We can't have our windows open because of the noise. But, even when they are shut, we can hear it. If more children are allowed, the noise will become worse.

"Allowing no more than 16 children outside will have no effect whatsoever."

Arun planning officer Simon Davis had proposed limiting the play area's use at the St Richard's Way hall behind St Richard's Church to 9am-12.30pm weekdays.

But Cllr Elaine Stainton (C, Felpham West) said: "I have got a lot of sympathy with the residents. I have reservations about this. We have had this before with playgroups and noise where residents can't

sit outside in their gardens.

"It's a difficult situation because we do need playgroups but I have sympathy with the residents living around that area."

Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick West) said the service provided by the playgroup outweighed the noise concerns. But he said: "If anything can be done to reduce the noise, we should be able to look at that, but - overall - I think this facility is needed."

Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: "I support the idea of a fence as a sound baffler. An improved acoustic fencing of some sort would no doubt help."

The proposed limit on the number of children using the play area was unenforceable, he said.

Lee Austin, the joint owner of Dizzy Ducklings, said: "We completely understand the needs of the residents and, at no point, do we want to upset anyone. The outdoor area will be used by a maximum of 16 children at any one time because there will be two staff members at a ratio of one to eight.

"We are a term-time only pre-school run for the families in the area. We will have children 35 every day based on our staff ratios but Ofsted specify that the space we have will allow 48."

The hall's previous play area - used since the late 70s - was unsuitable because it was next to the church's car park, he said.

Nine letters of objection to the plans were received by Arun as well as an objection from Aldwick Parish Council. A petition of 16 signatures in support was also submitted.

Planning permission for a playgroup at the site was first granted in 1971.

Appeal for help after woman is injured outside post office POLICE are seeking witnesses to an incident in which an elderly woman sustained a head injury in an Aldwick street.

The 90-year-old local woman was outside Rose Green Post Office at 8.45am last Saturday when she fell to the ground and sustained the head injury for which she was treated at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

and Sussex Road Policing Unit, said: "It is not currently clear what happened but we are investigating the possibility that she may have been struck by a car.

Hopes are high for Pagham housing campaign victory

WE WILL win, Pagham's residents have been told by their council chairman.

Cllr Ray Radmall said he and his colleagues, backed by a widespread community campaign, were working hard to ensure proposals for thousands of homes in the area were rejected.

He told the Pagham annual electors' meeting their efforts had prompted the government to get involved.

“We stand a very good chance of winning this,” he said at Tuesday's meeting. “I'm grateful to the community that has done a significant amount of letter writing not only to Arun District Council – with some 2,000 letters – but to the secretary of state in the government.

“That prompted the secretary of state (then Sajid Javid) to inform Arun he was considering taking the plans on board.

“Nicola Jones, our clerk, has spoken to his case officer and he is putting it forward for a possible call in.

“He wants all the evidence in the next few weeks because it ticks all the boxes.”

But Cllr Radmall said he believed Arun

was seeking some 800 homes across the first two sites and 600 at Summer Lane to enable it to meet its district-wide housing targets of 1,000 homes a year until 2031.

“This will destroy the Pagham that we know and enjoy and ruin the village atmosphere of our area,” he told the annual meeting on Tuesday.

One of those present, June Hamilton, of Lower Bognor Road, said she believed the incentive of £47m in the New Homes Bonus from the government which she calculated the housing to be worth to councils, encouraged its approval.

“This turns the due process in terms of planning and democracy on its head. This should go to a judicial review.

“We should not let these greedy developers come in here and ruin our lifestyle and countryside,” she said to applause from the 30 people present Mrs Hamilton also cast doubt on the developers' ability to look after the wildlife in the area. She listed creatures, such as great crested newts and water voles, she knew lived in her garden.

Cllr Radmall warned of widespread disruption if the housing was approved.

One of the developers had told him building work would take at least five years. “There will be heavy lorries, concrete wagons, noise and mess and everything else. It will be terrible,” he added.

Another resident, Mike Pierce, said: “All this heavy traffic coming through will damage our road system badly and make the roads unsafe for our young people."

` Charity assured MEMBERS of a Bognor Regis charity have been assured it will not be left without a base.

The Post reported last week the fears of Shopmobility about its future if Arun District Council's latest regeneration plans go ahead.

These would see the town hall turned into a hotel, with a pub/restaurant replacing the Shopmobility premises in the rear of the building.

An Arun spokeswoman said it was aware of the charity's situation.

“Arun District Council will work with Shopmobility at the appropriate time in the future to help them find alternative premises if the need arises," she said.

` Cinema screen BOGNOR Regis Town Council clerk Glenna Frost has asked us to print the following amendment in regard to our article about the approval of the new screen at the Picturedrome Cinema in the town.

She said: "I refer to the article headed 'Fourth screen for the cinema is backed' in last Friday's edition of the Bognor Regis Post.

"In particular, I can confirm that the reason for the project not progressing was not due to issues regarding oversailing neighbouring properties by the crane as stated in your article.

Trust marks centre's start WORK has started on a charity's £4m flagship building to support its work in Bognor Regis and Chichester.

The foundations of the Quarry Building are starting to take shape at the Aldingbourne Country Centre.

The launch of the construction project has caused great excitement at the centre, which is run by the Aldingbourne Trust charity.

Facilities in the new building will include a new cafe, conference room and shop. There will also be a much larger training kitchen for the charity's clients.

Sue Livett, the trust's managing director, pictured centre above with contractors and staff members, said: "A huge thank-you for all the support the Aldingbourne Trust has received, which includes generous gifts, donations and visits from many individuals, local businesses, trusts and the Coast 2 Capital local enterprise partnership.

"Without such generosity and support, these improvements just would not have been possible."

The need for the Quarry Building has been shown by the increasing popularity of the centre, north of the A27 at Norton.

It will free up space elsewhere at the site for people to be able to use and enjoy it.

Amiri Construction, the project's principal contractor, has made swift progress - thanks in part to the dry weather.

Visitors to the centre have been able to watch the levelling and excavation taking place in the old quarry and see 150 piles, each 20m deep, driven to

begin the foundations of the ambitious building.

Steel and reinforced concrete will form the foundations and frame for the threestorey construction.

The trust has ensured there is an emphasis on sustainable design and accessibility for visitors and people supported by the trust.

Its features will include renewable fuel heating, rainwater harvesting, an outer finish using cedar shingles and a fully equipped Changing Places area.

Planning approval for the centre was originally given by Arun District Council in April, 2013.

The start of the work came almost 40 years after the trust was founded. All clients, staff, volunteers and trustees were invited to pick up a spade and start digging the footings to create a day of history for the charity.

It has taken the trust almost ten years of planning, discussion and consultation to get to the present stage.

A spokeswoman said: "The trust provides support for people with learning and other disabilities and, at the country centre, focus on vocational training.

This is achieved through enterprises which include a popular cafe, conference room and on-site activities.

These range from an open farm, shop, wood recycling and furniture restoration workshop to plants."

The centre also has a range of attractions for visitors. Its Great Days Out programme is a hit with thousands of families in the school holidays.

Groups get cash A FUNDING boost from the Cooperative Group has helped five community group in Bognor Regis.

The good causes set to benefit from the windfall include 4Sight and the Pagham Flood Defence Trust.

The cash has come from a fund which is created when a Co-op member buys own brand products from its food stores or a funeral plan or funeral from Funeralcare and they receive a five per cent reward. A further one per cent goes to local good causes.

Those rewards, plus the proceeds of the carrier bag charge in England, has led to the payout in Bognor Regis.

Nationally, 4,000 good causes are

sharing a total pot of £9m.

Rufus Olins, the group membership officer at the Co-op, said: "The Co-op has always been community-focused.

"The original Rochdale Pioneers were motivated by the need to improve the living conditions of those within their local community and they also understood that values were just as important as value.

"By listening to our members, we are able to identify what communities care most about and then offer support that really makes a difference" He added: "By working with and supporting local good causes, great things are happening."

Annabell Alexander, marketing officer at My Sisters' House, said its volunteers were aware of the difficulties the testing situation could cause to mums.

"All this is natural, especially when the extra worry can be exhausting in itself. The group is run by two facilitators who have experience of looking after a child with long-term chronic medical conditions.

"Wendy and Maxime offer help with emotional support, benefit advice, school support, advice and signposting on health matters and self-esteem raising.

"They also plan to organise some informal fun day meet-ups during the summer months.

"There is a small donation requested each session of just £2," she said.

HELPING mums cope with a child's long-term illness is the aim of a new Bognor Regis group.

A Spoonful of Strength is being set up to support mothers whose offspring have a chronic condition or disability.

The two mums who will run it know how the diagnosis and the change in lifestyle needed to deal with the situation can be difficult enough.

But they also understand how it can create all sorts of emotional issues to leave parents feeling alone and stressed in their lives.

Learning to cope with day to day changes needed, as well as the worry about the child, can be difficult.

The new group is being held at My Sisters' House, the Arun and Chichester Women's Centre.

It will take place at 6.30pm-8.30pm on the third Wednesday monthly at its premises at 108c London Road in the town centre.

Roofer jailed for child sex

` Rowan's Rox runs A FELPHAM man is looking forward to an event next week after his double marathon run.

Rowan Davies is part of the team whose charity event - Rox Around the World - is taking place in Hotham Park on May 13.

He raised ÂŁ2,478 from running the London and Brighton marathons in two weeks after he completed the Dubai 26.2-mile race this year.

The money will go towards helping adults and children around Bognor Regis have the chance to exhibit skills in live music and art.

Rowan, 23, pictured below, ran Brighton in 3:36 and London in 3:42. He said he was disappointed that his times did not set a personal best after his Dubai run. But he added: "At the end of the day, nearly ÂŁ2,500 was made for charity and I had two amazing days."

He urged people to go along to Rox Around the World with its circus activities, live parades, bands, dance performances and craft stalls and raise even more money.

Park day will be world trip

DIY CIRCUS skills will be one of the attractions at an event in Bognor Regis.

Event management students have joined with Rox Music and Arts to stage the free family friendly attraction in Hotham Park.

Rox Around The World on May 13 will combine activities and entertainment popular in a wide range of cultures.

Among them will be Big Top and African drumming workshops. Live music and dance performances will provide plenty of entertainment in line with the Mardi Gras flavour of the day.

Alice Curtis, 22, one of the organisers from the University of Chichester, said: "This is a community event in which we want to reflect the various cultures from around the world. There will be stalls and activities highlighting them.

"There will be three parades - one to open the event, the main parade during it

and a closing parade. We would like to get people involved with them. The town crier will be staging a workshop. Children's arts and arts and crafts activities will be taking place as well."

The day - open from 11am-5pm - has been organised by an eight-strong team.

"We are final year students," said Alice, "and, instead of a dissertation, we have to put on a live event."

Her fellow student, Mary Davis, 22, said: "This is very much a community event along the theme of diverse cultures. We want to include as many members of the community as possible. There will be a lot of stalls with food from around the world including paella, hot dogs and Thai food."

The other organisers are: Mary Bartolic, 23, Elli Bowring, 25, Emily Ireland, 21, Miles Berridge, 21, Rowan Davies, 23, and Sophie Lawson, 20.

AN ALDINGBOURNE man has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail after he pleaded guilty to sexual activity with young girls.

Mitchell Jones, 28, a roofer, of Nyton Road, was sentenced last Friday for three counts of sexual activity with a child, aged 14, and one count of sexual activity with a 15-year-old child.

He had pleaded guilty at a hearing on February 27 and had been remanded in custody for sentencing at Portsmouth Crown Court.

DC David Midgley, of Chichester Investigations, said: "This case demonstrates how the police tenaciously investigate such crimes.

"After we examined Jones' mobile phone, further potential witnesses were identified and they subsequently assisted us.

"By their nature, these young girls were vulnerable.

They have shown great character and bravery in supporting the police and with their evidence, the court have held Jones accountable for his actions.

"When he is released from prison, he will be closely supervised with the assistance of a sexual harm prevention order and the sex offender registration."#

The court ordered that Jones would be a registered sex offender for life. He was also given the order to last indefinitely to severely restrict his access to young children and computers.

The counts related to his offending against a 14-year-old girl in Chichester over three months in early 2015 and also with a girl aged 15 in Hampshire around the same time. He met both through social media.

Young performers show talents at first event to delight the crowds

The singers, dancers and martial arts experts aged in their teens and below grabbed the chance to show what they could do during the extension of the annual Bognorphenia free community event.

The reaction to last Saturday's occasion was so good it left Bognorphenia founder Kez Bridger close to tears. She said: “I had so much positive feedback, it was unbelievable. I was quite emotional.

“It took me two years of getting it sorted but the music was brilliant and all ages came along. There was a really good atmosphere.”

Some 300 tiles were painted in one of the arts and crafts workshops and Kez estimated at least 2,000 people had enjoyed the day and sat in the sunshine during the better weather in the afternoon.

Among those taking part were 24 members of The Regis Troopers, aged from seven upwards.

Sophie Clifford, eight, has been dancing with the troupe for four years.

“This gets you going and energises you,” she said. “It makes the music fun but also wants to make you do the routines properly.

“It's good to have people watching me dance. It makes me want to keep going when they clap.”

The dancers are encouraged to devise routines and Sophie created one around True Colours last year.

“I felt quite proud when we danced to that,” she said. “It's good because it means you are good at dancing and also at making the dances up.”

Fellow dancer Charlotte Gudgeon, seven, said: “This is my first time performing. I like doing the dances and getting active. It gives you a good feeling. I have to concentrate and learn the routines.”

Also impressing with their skills were 20 members of the Matt Fildes Martial Arts classes. Yellow belt Jamie Greed, six, was among them for his first public display after rapidly passing his white

and purple belt tests.

He said: “I enjoy showing what I can do. It's so good learning these skills because I can look after myself. I like learning the different hand drills.”

Among the techniques he performed for the audience were high, middle and low blocks, front kicks and two tier punches.

Hotham Park hosted Arundel and Littlehampton Scout Band for a selection of tunes as well. They had a Star Wars theme, with Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper joining the band for guest appearances.

Cymbal player Robert Humphries, 14, said: “It's good to meet new people and good to learn new songs. You learn new skills as well.”

Michael Flynn, 13, the band's glockenspiel player, said: “It's a hard instrument to learn when you start but it's easy when you become used to it.”

Music delight for Mod event EARLY visitors to Bognorphenia enjoyed a preview of a gig which will have 40,000 music fans dancing this summer.

Mod band The Aim members Grant Judges and Jamie Tongue performed an acoustic selection of the playlist from their set when they support the legendary Madness.

Their appearance with the chart favourites will take place in August at Detling Showground in Kent.

Grant said: “It's our biggest concert to date. We've played in front of 1,000-2,000 before but nothing like an audience of that size. It's going to be great. We can't wait – but it does not matter how many people are listening to us.

"We still put everything we've got into our performing. It's about getting our music out there.”

The songs the duo performed at Sunday's fifth staging of the free mod celebration were a mixture of new tracks from their latest album – Days Like These – such as Friday Night and Dream Dancing and their older numbers.

“It's our second album in the two years since we formed,” said Grant. “We take our inspiration from the likes of The Who, The Small Faces and Paul Weller.

They were making their debut at Bognor phenia and were impressed by the event's first staging in Hotham Park.

At the other end of the musical scale was the annual event's largest number of performers to date.

A 70-strong Rock Choir of mainly women

singers lifted spirits with an enthusiastic rendition of eight songs led by Sarah Willis. Their joyous versions of Living on a Prayer and Uptown Girl among others had the audience swaying and tapping their feet.

Singer Helen Sachania, 48, of Storrington, said: “Singing makes you feel good. You would not sing in public on your own. This gives you the camaraderie to get up there and sing.”

Also making his Bognorphenia debut was pop soul singer Terry Carvey.

A late replacement, he smoothly ran through a selection of his favourites.

“This seems a nice and friendly event,” he said. “It was a bit of a rush getting my songs together for today but I'm pleased to be here and signing in front of people.”

Other performers in a packed programme included Dawn Gracie, The Proper, Adrian Hunt and Richard Scarborough.

Bognorphenia founder Kez Bridger halted the entertainment at 5pm, an hour earlier than planned, because of the forecast heavy rain and 30mph winds.

But the afternoon stayed largely dry to allow the hundreds of visitors to look around the dozen stalls and handful of scooters as well as to enjoy the music.

` Open house invite A CHANCE is being offered to look at the plans for a unique dementia hub to help patients around Chichester and Bognor Regis.

The Dementia Support charity is staging at open house from 4pm to 6pm on May 16 at its premises in City Fields Way, Tangmere.

This will give visitors the opportunity to look at its proposals for the unique hub, tour the current building and learn more about the support services which will be provided for people living with dementia.

Promotion joy for the Rocks and their fans THOUSANDS of Rocks fans were celebrating long into the night after Bognor FC served up a promotion party to remember.

A record crowd of more than 3,000 supporters packed into Nyewood Lane on Monday to cheer the side on to success.

And it worked - with the Rocks scoring twice in the first half to clinch the win, the playoff final victory and promotion to the National League South for the first time since 2008.

When the final whistle came, fans of all ages were flying green and white flags high and proud as celebrations went on into the night.

Those at the club hailed the promotion as a "wonderful achievement",adding it could not have been done without the support from the fans and wider community.

Jack Pearce, the club's general manager, said it was one of the best days he has experienced at the club in the five decades he has been involved at Nyewood.

Pearce said: "Days like this make up for all the black days.

"I'm delighted for everyone that supports the club. I'm delighted for [manager] Jamie [Howell], Dabber [assistant manager Darin Kilpatrick] and the staff and the players."

It has been a remarkable league campaign for the Rocks, who defied the odds all season to lead the way in the Ryman Premier for most of the campaign.

But after failing to win either of their last two league games, Bognor found themselves in the end of season playoffs.

The first match took place at Nyewood on

Thursday against Wingate & Finchley.

After a tense 90 minutes the scores were locked at 1-1, until Ollie Pearce smashed home a strike to seal the victory.

That set-up a playoff final against Dulwich Hamlet, a side that has beaten the Rocks twice in the playoffs in the recent years.

The kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes to allow a record crowd of 3,119 - the highest since the FA Cup match against Swansea City in 1984/5 - to squeeze into the ground.

But when the match got underway, Bognor had the strongest start, scoring two quick goals.

The nerves began to jitter late on when James Fraser missed a penalty and then Dulwich halved the deficit.

But after five agonising minutes, the referee blew his whistle, sparking a pitch invasion and the letting off of flares.

Lots of cheers and a few tears followed as the players and staff joined supporters and officials on the pitch to lift the silverware.

It was a day that those who call the Nye Camp their second home will not forget anytime soon.

Pearce said: "After having the disappointment of having two bites of the cherry and missing out on the title I'm really pleased to have made it. It shows you the ups and downs of football."

Manager Jamie Howell said he was "delighted".

He added: "The lads have been brilliant all season and the two games in the playoffs were really intense.

"Relief is the over-riding emotion. I think there was a lot of pent up frustration after the last two league games and we were trying to keep cool.

"To have finally clinched promotion is amazing. I know how much it means for the supporters who have been brilliant all year.

"It was a brilliant year for us, far better than anticipated and it's justice for all the hard work we have put into it."

Dance success MUSIC and movement was used by dancers at a Bognor Regis school to focus on the lives of children in a warzone.

The Regis School's Signature dance troupe used a dance, drama and music showcase to perform a stunning piece which explored children's rights and their experiences in Syria.

The moving and thought-provoking dance was choreographed by Year 12 student Ellie Lucas. She runs the weekly Signature Dance Club and works with the younger students to create wonderful dance work which always has a clear message.

The dancers performed the piece in character to have a strong impact on the audience at the event in the school.

Year 7 student Darci Scott, one of the dancers, said: "I really enjoyed performing. Ellie has such great choreography and the performing arts teachers are really supportive."

` Electrical recycling DOORSTEP recycling of small electrical items begins in the Bognor Regis area next week.

The joint scheme between Arun District Council and its refuse contractor, Biffa, allows items like shavers, chargers, hairdryers, mobile phones, DVD players and cameras to be put out by households for collection.

Residents whose rubbish is collected on Wednesdays will join the scheme on May 10. It will continue to expand to Thursday collections on May 25 and those on Friday on June 9.

An Arun spokesman said: "Small electrical items should be placed in open, standard-sized carrier bags next to your rubbish bin/sacks.

"Anything larger cannot be taken as it will not fit into the storage cages under our collection vehicles.

"But they can still be taken to your local household waste recycling centre."

The scheme started in the east of the district last month.

Year 13 level three performing arts BTEC students repeat their dark and spell-binding production of Macbeth from last November's Shakespeare schools' festival.

The rest of the evening included dance work from a range of year groups. Fantastic music included a rap performance of Handlebars, orginally by FloBots, by Walid Brahmi and the Year 10 band to provide a highlight of the occasion.

Other music pieces included impressive vocals from Year 11 student Jade Brighten with How Will I Know? and Little Lies, accompanied

by Year 11 musicians.

Year 12 crooner Charlie Mann sung My Way accompanied by Year 12 pianist Mathew Hickey and Hollie Mills, of Year 13, who ended the evening with a lively version of Don't Stop Me Now joined by the sixth form band.

Head of performing arts Jolie Lelliott said: "I was immensely proud of all the students."

Issy to help children in India learn for life f Bognor Regis Handbell Ringers make their donation

Ringers support stroke survivors CONCERTS by Bognor Regis Handbell Ringers have helped stroke survivors in the town.

The tuneful members of the group presented a £1,200 cheque to the Bognor Regis Stroke Support Group at the end of a fundraising year for the organisation.

The donation was received by support group secretary Valerie Evans, pictured above with the handbell ringers.

The group is going to use the money for a summer outing for members, a cruise on the Chichester Canal and a visit to the Bognor Regis pantomime in December.

Allsopp said: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to provide these funds to support the excellent work of this voluntary local organisation.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported us throughout 2016 and the members of the group for their ongoing commitment and enthusiasm which has enabled us to give 25 performances during the year at venues ranging from nursing homes to playing carols at Chichester Cathedral."

This year will see the handbell ringers raise funds for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance's round-the-clock lifesaving work.

YEAR 10 student Isabella Saunders has been awarded a scholarship to improve the lives of children in India.

Issy, of Felpham Community College, was among just 30 young people nationally to be given the award to help to build a school in the sub-continent this summer.

She was chosen for the Virgin Atlantic prize after she had convinced the judges at the WE charity she shared their vision to inspire people to work together to make change.

Issy attended a WE concert in London last term and it made her determined to play her part.

"The speakers at the concert were amazing and made me want to take part in something global.

"I had to create a video on what I had been involved with in relation to the WE movement. There are only 30 kids around the country who have been given the scholarship, so I feel really proud.

"I can't wait to get out to India and get involved with something which will be a tremendous benefit to a local community," she said.

The WE movement is organising a threeweek journey to west India in July for the young adults, with WE volunteers, to help to build a school in a developing area.

Felpham headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "Issy has been involved with a number of charity events at the college and is an active member of our school leadership team."

Think pink, so says Jan! These Morrison's offers May-be hard to resist Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

I FINISHED last week's column exhorting you to try new wine ranges, so this week I concentrate on Morrison's and their current approach to wine retailing.

I begin with a Head Honcho Chardonnay from the sunny climes of Chile reduced from £6.50 to an enticing £4.75 and this brand is the property of Morrison's and the label stands out in comparison to the traditional packaging of most Chilean wines.

Head Honcho is designed to appeal to a younger consumer base with its quirky and striking label depicting flora and fauna native to Chile.

This wine has a good nose, is fresh on the palate and is a veritable melon and pineapple taste-feast and will certainly initiate discussion both in terms of the enigmatic and delightfully colourful label with its subtle intricacies and value for money at the offer price a visual and sensory experience to savour!

At a discounted price of £6.25, the 2016 Crux Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc caught my eye, a wine named after the Southern Cross constellation,

a defining feature of the Antipodean night sky. Fresh and clean on the palate, this wine exudes pear and lime flavours and would regally accompany salads or fish dishes and merits your attention!

Turning my attention to the very heart of France I espied a 2016 WM Morrison Sancerre from an area which has produced wine since

Roman times and whose mineralrich and chalky soil is so conducive to producing crisp and fruity wine which rarely disappoints. Not on offer, but reasonably priced at £12, this Sancerre is delicate with melon flavours to the fore and delightfully balanced acidity.

Extremely quaffable and affordable!

In terms of reds, an old favourite of mine loomed large in the form of

a Sorso 2013 Primitivo at a miserly outlay of £5.50 and mindful that sorso means a sip, I indulged in a few and noted tobacco and leather coupled with juicy blackberry and blueberry fruits and a spicy bouquet - this wine is tantalisingly good at this low price !

INGREDIENTS • 4 large skinless, boneless chicken breast halves • 1 cup milk, or as needed • 1 cup bread crumbs • 1 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • 1 cup olive oil • salt and ground black pepper to taste • 1 lemon, thinly sliced • 1 cup white wine • 1 cup chicken broth • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1 ounce brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier®), or to taste

ideally complement barbecue food and at £6.50 is a wine to consider!

My final selection was a 2014 Valpolicella Ripasso selected by Morrison's retailing at £7.50 and was decidedly rich and fruity with a hint of chocolate and should regale your taste buds and is veritably V for victory!

I will seek further bargain buys next week!

Chicken Francesa

Method 1. Remove the tenderloin from each chicken breast half.

Fillet each chicken breast half into 2 slices. Pound each piece of chicken, including the tenderloins, to 1/4-inch thickness. Place chicken in a bowl and pour in enough milk to completely cover chicken; soak for 30 minutes.

2. Mix bread crumbs, Pecorino Romano cheese, and parsley together in a bowl.

Remove chicken from milk and dredge through bread crumb mixture until each piece is evenly coated.

3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat; cook chicken in the hot oil until lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly butter a baking dish.

INGREDIENTS

5. Transfer chicken to the prepared baking dish, reserving 1 tablespoon olive oil in the skillet. Sprinkle salt and pepper over chicken.

Place 1 slice lemon onto each chicken piece.

6. Pour wine into the skillet with reserved olive oil; bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Add chicken broth and lemon juice and boil until reduced by half, 5 to 10 minutes. Pour wine mixture over chicken and drizzle brandied orange liqueur over each.

• 6 egg yolks • 1 cup white sugar, divided • 1 pound mascarpone cheese • 6 egg whites, stiffly beaten • 1/4 cup heavy cream • 3 tablespoons kirschwasser • 1 1/4 cups strong brewed coffee, cold • 25 ladyfingers • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

Tiramisu

Method 1. In a medium bowl beat together the egg yolks and 1/3 cup of sugar. Using a wooden spoon stir in mascarpone cheese, beaten egg whites, cream and kirschwasser; stir until smooth. Set aside.

2. Dissolve remaining 2/3 cup sugar in coffee.

Quickly, to avoid complete saturation, dip ends of ladyfingers in coffee mixture. Place

The great carbohydrate debate!

I READ an interesting article this week, and it was discussing the varied thoughts around eating carbohydrates. It is good, or is it not?

There seems to be a great deal of confusion around this topic. There’s a wide range of nutritional value in the carbohydrate kingdom with sweets, sugary drinks and processed carbs on one end of the spectrum and whole grains, fruits and vegetables on the other.

It’s a no-brainer to realise which ones would be best for you, but I do think it can be a little unclear at times.

Very few people can argue with the fact that vegetables and fruits are healthy carbohydrates, but whole grains are different.

They used to be considered a staple food. But with all the fad diets, are they still considered so?

I have a lot of clients that tell me they never eat carbohydrates to maintain their weight. If you are one of these people you could be doing yourself an injustice for your health. The fact is grains, like brown rice, quinoa, whole grain pasta, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, whole-wheat crackers, wild rice, millet (the list goes on), are loaded with essential nutrients. Including them in your diet delivers a wide array of health benefits and even long-term weight control.

Obviously, if you have coeliac disease or a gluten sensitivity, you’ll want to avoid the whole grains that contain gluten, but there are so many other healthy carbs that can be enjoyed instead.

People who eat whole grains daily burn about 100 more calories a day because of their increased metabolism and better digestion, with an increase in bowel movement. No more horrid constipation!

And eating whole grains at meals helps you stay full longer, which means you’re less likely to snack or binge on unhealthy foods.

Even though whole grains have a hearty dose of carbohydrates and have the potential to raise blood sugar, they also contain fibre, which can prevent blood sugar spikes.

Plus, the magnesium in carbs is an important cofactor for helping the body properly use glucose and make insulin. So for diabetics, they are an essential food.

Also, according to many studies done in both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women, they have shown significant reductions in breast cancer risk when eating fibre from whole grains every day. This has been tied to their rich source of phyto-oestrogenic lignans (plant oestrogens found in cereal fibre).

The lignans mimic oestrogen, causing your body to produce less on its own. Less oestrogen production means greater breast cancer prevention.

Fibre is also very helpful at binding to toxins to get them out of your body. Plus, the fibre in whole grains helps promote a healthy digestion by acting as pre-biotics, the food that nourishes your

good bacteria (pro-biotics). This is why diets rich in whole grains can help remedy diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive ailments.

Community News & Views SHOPPERS at a national retailer can help a Bognor Regisbased non-profit organisation.

Customers of Tesco can vote each time they shop in the next two months for Saltwater Creations to receive a grant of up to £4,000. Saltwater is among the three groups in this region of Tesco to have been shortlisted to receive money from its Bags of Help community funding scheme.

This sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awarded to community groups depending on the number of votes they have received from customers.

Jules Stallard, a director of Saltwater Creations Community Interest Company, said the cash would help its work to empower individuals, especially young people, to realise their ability.

"As a small local non-profit organisation, this funding will enable us to work with even more young people and local schools at no cost to them, at a time when budgets are restricted for schools.

Among Saltwater's presenters is Yapton resident Amanda Worne, pictured below. She was left paralysed after a cycling accident in August, 2015, and talks about her experiences since then overcoming her disabilities.

As well as real-life examples, like Amanda, of how to get involved in activities and volunteering, Saltwater provides tools and signposting to enable individuals to build confidence, especially when they face times of adversity.

The funding for Bags of Help comes from the 5p charge for single use carrier bags. The scheme has delivered more than £28.5m to 4,000-plus projects up and down the UK. Lindsey Compton, the head of community at Tesco, said: "We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for May and June.

"There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can't wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities."

HEALTHY eating will be on the menu at a new course in Bognor Regis this month.

OVING Scarecrow Day is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year on May 13.

The team behind Oving Scarecrows have always aimed to provide a great value family day out that is accessible and appealing to the whole community.

Lucy Bailey, one of Oving Scarecrow's founding members, explained how the event has gained popularity over the years. She said: "Since

2008, the event has grown to become a red-letter day in our village calendar.

"Oving is now renowned for its annual Scarecrow Day and we attract an increasing number of visitors as our reputation for delivering a fantastic day spreads ever wider."

Another member, Anne Jenkins, is keen that as many people attend the day as possible. She said: "One of our key aims is to ensure no-one is excluded from participating.

"So, not only is everyone who organises and helps with the day a volunteer, but we also raise sponsorship, mostly from local businesses, so that we can provide most of our family activities free or at subsidised prices."

RECORD number of registrations have been made for a charity walk from Goodwood, pictured above.

Just under 1,000 people so far signed up for this year's Just Walk event next Saturday.

Walkers from across the country will meet at the racecourse to begin their walking challenge for charity across the stunning South Downs National Park.

They will be raising funds for the good cause of their choice as well as conquering their physical goals and sharing their emotional stories.

Mark Hannaford, the founder of Just Walk, said: "This has been a fantastic year for sign-ups and we still have a week left until the big day.

"We are absolutely delighted by the number of people who have registered for the challenge.

"We have 80-year-olds walking our big 60km route purely for the challenge, families walking with their children on our shorter routes for a fun day out as well as large groups participating and raising much-needed funds for their chosen charities."

Those who take part have five routes from which to choose - 10km, 20km, 30km, 40km and the big 60km. This means there is a walk suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Just Walk is in its 11th year and allows people to take part in one of the easiest forms of exercise.

A RECORD number of young people around Bognor Regis and Chichester have signed up for a life-changing experience this summer.

The total of 270 members for the latest round of National Citizen Service courses is almost double the 155 who took part last year.

The participants will be going on four-week courses from July 3 and July 17.

Clair Goddard, who runs the scheme in the Post area, as the National Citizen Service wave co-ordinator, said: "The numbers are the highest we have known.

"It's exciting because it's going to change all these young people and get them involved in their communities.

"The NCS is getting more known. Young people are also realising they get two months off once they have finished their exams.

"By taking part in the citizen service, they are getting a signed certificate from the Prime Minister and a fantastic opportunity for their future."

The month they spent in the service could boost their confidence, helped good causes and gave them a good addition to their CV as they looked to start university or apprenticeships.

Clair was present at the Our Generation event for Bognorphenia in Hotham Park last Saturday to publicise the service.

She was joined by Tom Leggatt, 23, who took part in the first year of the scheme. He said: "I was a bit of a lad and a naughty boy when I was at school.

"I was training to be a mechanic when I heard about the NCS and went on the course. I'm now helping to run it in West Sussex. The money is not so good but I get real satisfaction in what I do talking to young people and helping them.

"I really enjoy my job in summer when I'm going on the courses with them. It's the best job in the summer.

"I get to do all that they do, have a laugh with the members and I get paid for it."

NCS in West Sussex is run by the county's intervention, prevention and early health service.

Those who take part in this year's programme will be split into three groups each in Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton.

They will spend their first week camping on a hill at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight team building and bonding with each other.

The second week will be spent on the University of Chichester's campus when a series of projects will find out the various skills which the participants possess.

The final fortnight will be devoted to community work. Each group will decide which projects to support and stage events to raise awareness. Previous years have seen mental health and domestic violence highlighted.

SUPPORTERS of Bognor Regis pier have staged their first public event of the year.

The Bognor Regis Pier Watch members took their gazebo to the seafront to tell the public about their aims and to seek to sign them up.

Jan Malpas, the group's chairman, said: "It was a bit cold so there was not a huge amount of people around.

"But we did sign up some new members and there was certainly interest from the public.

"We will be doing many pier watch gazebo days during the summer on Bognor Regis seafront and we look forward to talking to people about our vision to protect the Grade II listed building of Bognor Regis Pier and signing them up as life members for £1."

The group was formed three months ago by some former members of the pier trust after the pier's owner, John Ayers, declined to join the trust's bid for lottery funds for the pier.

One of town's main roads covers three centuries Original plans were for hundreds of buildings in the Italian Renaissance style WE RECENTLY had a look at the history of Linden Road and, therefore, this week I thought I would follow with the history of Victoria Drive, which is crossed by Linden Road.

In many instances, it is very easy to place your house or road into a particular historical context. However, for other areas this is not so easy. I worked on one particular area of the town, as a project for the millennium: the northern section of Victoria Drive, from Linden Road to Chichester Road, which seems to cover such a diverse range of styles and embraces three centuries.

In 1887, the Kelly’s Directory of Sussex reported on a new development, thus: “Several fine residences have been erected, and Victoria Drive of more than a mile in length, communicating with the sea and connecting Bognor and South Bersted, is planted with trees on either side, forming an extremely pleasant boulevard."

The estate was to be known as the Victoria Park Estate and was designed by Arthur Smith, a local architect, as part of a larger scheme in the late 1860s. He was also the architect for the Picturedrome, Reynolds Depository and the Royal Hotel.

This grandiose plan was for 351 buildings in an Italian Renaissance style, but it never fully

came to fruition. These developments were being considered at a time when the railway and pier constructions were taking place, so we have to assume that people were being attracted to this sleepy seaside resort and hence this need for larger houses, compared with the previously built smaller homes.

At this time, in the 1860s, the area beyond the Picturedrome only consisted of fields. Building did eventually commence in a somewhat piecemeal fashion with a few houses, such as Selwood Lodge and Nos 100 and 128 being built in the 1890s, followed in a period between 1900 and 1910 by five more large homes being constructed. The 20s and 30s saw a further spell of building take place.

The northern section of Victoria Drive is therefore made up of a wide variety and complexity of housing that gives no real indication of the heritage of the area in connection with its surrounding streets.

The road now consists of property built from the 1890s to the 1990s. For example, the South Bersted Vicarage was built in 1907 and still exists today standing opposite the visually more modern veterinary hospital, which was actually built in 1911 and changed its use in the 1970s.

built, no doubt partly due to the fact that postFirst World War servants and gardeners were more difficult to find. Very few businesses were based in the road. However, there has been a number of uses for some of the properties, including St Olive's School that was run at No 107 from the 1930s to the mid-1960s.

The sixties saw major changes occur due to the increased need for flats and bedsits. Victoria Drive was to have its share as either the larger, older houses were converted while others were demolished for blocks of flats to be built. Land was becoming a greater asset and developers increased their need to purchase plots and develop increased density housing.

At this time, a number of houses were demolished. Courtfield House, as an example, was built in the grounds of No 129. These three-storey buildings were indicative of their time, promising a mature location in a tree lined avenue, near the beach, close to shops and facilities. Security was a priority and these homes were advertised with features like smoke alarms and door entry systems.

Another major change was taking place in the mid 1970s. A new roundabout was built in Chichester Road, which included a re-routing of the traffic flow at the northern end of Victoria Drive. This allowed people to drive through Victoria Drive, especially the northern section, as a detour from the main A259 to the other parts of the town.

During the 1980s, another change was to affect the use of the area. With the increasing need for nursing and residential care homes, many of the larger houses were suitable for this new ‘industry’ and today we still have a number of establishments.

Another feature of Victoria Drive has been bed and breakfast accommodation. This is always required in a seaside resort and there was also an hotel at No 100, coupled with numerous smaller B&B establishments during

the summer seasons.

In 1990, a number of bungalows on the corner of Victoria Drive and Linden Road was demolished and replaced by a range of housing for a housing association. In 1999, there were nine detached houses built on land that was previously a house and grounds, which had been derelict for a number of years.

Changes have continued with new flats, new planning applications for conversions into flats or the complete demolition of property to be replaced by modern flats.

In the other section of Victoria Road, from Linden Road to the Aldwick shops, for a number of years we had the Royal Naval Academy situated near Sylvan Way. This academy was for navy boys, and their tuition included special preparations for ‘examinations and scholarships'. Almost opposite there was Street Courte School, while this is one of the new buildings that was retained almost in its original form and then converted into flats.

Recently, I was supplied with an undated page from a magazine talking about holidays which were taken at Streete Court School, Bognor Regis. At the time the article was written it describes how 120 young people of all ages would come down to the seaside for five weeks in the summer.

The organisation that ran these holidays was called Junior Holidays and its founder was Charles Propper.

Looking at a 1956 Kelly’s Directory, it shows us some interesting pieces of history in the area from Linden Road to the Aldwick shops alone.

These included private hotels - Shalimar Hotel and Kelsey Private Hotel - along the road also a few schools. There was the sports field for Streete Court and also the convalescent home for WH Smith – Hambledon House. By the time of the 1968 directory there was an increase in the number of flats and nursing homes.

Middleton skipper Heather stars with PostSport the bat and ball to secure Bognor win MIDDLETON skipper Sean Heather produced a fine all-round display to propel his side to victory over Bognor in the first round of the Gray Nicolls T20 cup.

The 35-year-old all-rounder used his right arm medium pace to great effect to take four wickets and reduce Bognor to 131-8 in their allotted overs.

Then, opening the batting, Heather smashed a quick-fire half-century to guarantee his side reached the target with seven wickets left to take the spoils in the local derby.

It ensured Middleton picked up where they left off last season, a year which saw them promoted into the top flight of the Sussex League.

Bognor won the toss and hoped to make the most of home conditions at the Regis Oval.

They were boosted with four players making their competitive debuts, among them Marques Clarke from Barbados, who has joined as the club's overseas player for the year.

Bognor got off to a good start, with captain Max Ashmore hitting 45 from 39 balls.

He received good support from Joe Ashmore (24) who was going well until he was run out

by Matt Cooke.

But then Heather began to control things for Middleton and his spell of four wickets for just 24 runs in his allotted four overs meant that Bognor posted a tally of 131-8.

With the visitors needing just over six and a half runs an over, Heather was determined to give his side a good start.

He did so and more, carrying his bat through the innings to see his side home.

The former Sussex man scored 57 runs from 50 balls, which included two sixes.

But he did receive good support with Angus Robson (24 from 20 balls) and Will Burrows (33 from 30) adding contributions which saw Middleton reach the target with five balls to spare.

Middleton will hope to take that form into their first match in the Sussex Premier Division, taking on Bexhill at the Sports Ground.

Division Two Bognor will also be at home entertaining recently-relegated Billingshurst at The Regis Oval.

In Division Three, Chichester Priory Park play Roffey Seconds at Goodwood - their first competitive match at the ground - while Pagham travel to Brighton and Hove Seconds.

All games take place tomorrow from 12pm.

DARTS: Andy Stubbs of the Hunston Hares was the standout performer in week three of the Bognor Firday Summer Darts League - but his 25 dart points average was not enough to prevent his side from falling to defeat to Friary Z. Here are the full results from week three:

f Itchenor Sailing Club is ready for it's open day

BUDDING sailors wanting to catch a taste of the sea should head down to Chichester's Itchenor Sailing Club this weekend.

The Chichester Harbour-based club will open its doors to all on Sunday to deliver taster sessions as part of the annual initiative.

Those at the club say the free entry event is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the different sailing classes available, as well as discovering about training and the thrill of being on the water.

Charles Hyatt, Commodore at Itchenor Sailing Club, said: “We are excited to welcome visitors to our club again this year and give them the opportunity to discover their local sailing venue and meet other like-minded people."

The club’s expert sailors will be offering taster sessions in a variety of keelboats including Solent Sunbeams, National Swallows and X One Designs.

Visitors will also be able to go afloat in one of the many spectator boats and experience

the thrill of racing up-close.

Local Land Rover dealership Harwoods Group is sponsoring the event.

Alastair Hanna, of Harwoods, commented: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Itchenor Sailing Club during its racing season this year.

Chi finish the season on a high with drubbing of the Stringers

CHICHESTER City rounded off an excellent season with a convincing 6-2 win over Hailsham Town.

The Lillywhites exceeded expectations in the SCFL Premier this year.

With just a month of the season to run, Miles Rutherford's side found themselves as a potential title challenger.

But a poor run-in, combined with eventual league champions Haywards Heath Town putting together a winning run, saw Chi stumble to a third place finish - 12 points off Heath but 12 points ahead of local rivals Pagham in fourth.

With the club not applying for promotion and a number of key players not available in that time, that dip in form was probably to be expected.

Chi completed the season on Saturday with a win at already relegated Hailsham Town.

Daniel Hegarty bagged a first half brace before Lorenzo Dolcetti, Omar Barry (2) and Kieran Hartley rounded off the scoring.

The focus now is on rebuilding for next season with those at Oaklands Park hopeful the side can build on their success next term.

Lions roar on to success Praise from ex-Pompey star

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea said he is "absolutely delighted" after the Lions lifted a cup for the first time in more than 20 years.

The Nyetimber Lane side went into the Peter Bentley Cup final against SCFL Premier winners Haywards Heath Town as firm underdogs.

But ten-man Pagham produced an inspired battling display to win 1-0, thanks to a Callum Overton strike.

The win was extra sweet as it meant manager Mark Bennett stepped down from the role on a high after 18 months at the helm.

Speaking to the Post after the match, Shea said: "I'm absolutely delighted for everyone at the club.

"It's very hard to win any kind of trophy and it's a great achievement."

Heath came into the match at The Beacon in Hassocks as firm favourites, having sealed the league title just two days previous.

But Pagham matched them in every area of the park, eventually taking the lead with

30 minutes to go.

Despite Daniel Swain being sent off, the Lions held on, sparking wild celebrations which went on into the night.

Shea said: "I think we were the better side and many of the neutrals said we deserved to win it.

"We took everything they threw at us.

"Bins [goalkeeper James Binfield] pulled off one great save but realistically the score could have been more.

"The last 20 minutes I was quite nervous and they did have six or seven corners on the trot but realistically we were the better side " He added: "All the players involved and supporters involved management team, all went back to the club and had a good time everyone really enjoyed it.

"We've been pushing for last two of three years and finally got something "I want to thank Mark [Bennett] for everything he has done at the club.

"He has worked extremely hard throughout the club and he goes out on a high."

FORMER Portsmouth FC star Steve Claridge made sure these stars of tomorrow did not forget their first piece of silverware - after handing them their medals in person.

Chichester City Youth under 12s have been in fine form all season, giving a number of sides at higher age levels a run for their money.

Those tests stood the side in good stead as they headed to the SCI Youth Football Festival last month.

Competing against under-12s sides from across the country, the Chi lads showed great spirit to win the contest.

trophies from former Pompey striker Claridge, who now works as a media pundit.

Chris Bullen, the Chichester City Youth under-12s manager, said: "This is our first trophy of the season.

"We only conceded one goal over eight games which was a penalty which was quite something and scoring 24 in the process."

Bullen put the success down to his "very strong and talented" side playing at under-13s level for much of the season.

This includes being pitched in the highest division for under-13s sides in the area.

He said: It was a great test for us playing older teams and although we had mixed results all season the team got stronger as the season progressed.

"We finished joint sixth in the top league which is a great achievement, some of the size differences was very considerable.

"We play good passing football and had to use this as our strength."

Chi Ladies on verge of title win CHICHESTER City Ladies are standing on the edge of history - with the club just one win away from winning the FA Premier League Division One South West crown.

Liam Greenfield's side have been in imperious form throughout the season, winning 19 of their 20 league games so far.

The latest was a 13-0 win on the road at Exeter City on Saturday.

That meant that the Green Army went into the match against St Nicholas Ladies at Oaklands Park last night knowing that a win will seal the championship and the club's highest ever finish.

They will hope for a repeat of Saturday when Chi were in control from the off.

They established a lead after only five minutes when a sublime move saw captain Becky Barron slam home from just inside the box.

The lead was doubled by Chloe before 16-year-old Lou Lou Robson scored her first senior goal.

A fourth was added on the quarter hour when Cherelle Khassal caused havoc at the back for the red and whites and her low cross was diverted into her own net by the unlucky Kate Finch.

To their credit, Exeter heads didn’t drop despite the adversity and they kept Chichester at bay until just after the half hour when Charley Wilson-Blakely notched her first of

the match with a simple finish.

Moments later and Jess Lewry got in on the act to slide the ball home from another perfect set up from Dowdell.

Chichester were in full control and extremely content going into the second half.

It wasn’t until just after the hour mark when the visitors broke through again. Lucie Challen, who had only just come off the bench, floated a lovely ball into the danger area for Dowdell to make it six.

With Exeter under all sorts of pressure,

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell believes he couldn't have left the Rocks on a better day - after his side sealed promotion to National League South in dramatic circumstances.

After suffering the heartbreak of missing out on the league title on the last day of the season, Bognor were faced with the lottery of the playoffs.

But two 2-1 wins in the space of four days - the second one against Dulwich Hamlet in front of more than 3,000 fans - led to a promotion party of epic proportions at Nyewood Lane.

That mood was dampened a little a few days later when Howell revealed he was leaving the Rocks to join Eastbourne Borough.

But speaking exclusively to the Post, the man who has sat in the Bognor dugout since 2009 said he could not have left on a better note.

Howell said: "For me, it's not going to get a much better day than Monday.

"We played really well in front of a big crowd, full of lots of people in the crowd that I know and to get the win with the players that are there is just a really good ending.

"I thought it may be my last game and really wanted to savour it and I did.

"To see the happiness and the tears on people's faces was brilliant and well worthwhile. I can't thank the club, Dabber [assistant manager Dain Kilpatrick], the players and the fans enough."

Howell's news has overshadowed what

has been a momentous week for everyone involved in the club.

It started with a 2-1 win against Wingate on Thursday, where Ollie Pearce scored with the last kick of the match to take the Rocks through into the playoff final.

The opponents on Monday were Dulwich, a side that has beaten the Rocks twice in the playoffs in recent years.

But strikes from Jimmy Muitt and Ollie Pearce gave the majority of the record Nyewood crowd of 3,119 plenty to shout about.

A missed penalty and then a Dulwich consolation late on led to a nervy finale.

But the Rocks held on to seal a remarkable promotion for a side that has punched about its weight all season.

For Howell, it is that memory that will stick with him as he takes up a full-time position along the coast.

He said: "I've been thinking a little bit about it throughout the season that it is time for a change.

"I love the football club and for 20 years it has been a massive part of my life.

"I will miss chairman Jack [Pearce], Dabber and the players and the staff but sometimes good things have to come to an end.

"I didn't want to get to the stage where people want you to go and thought it was the time to go. We got promoted and hopefully I can leave on a high."

No rush to appoint Rocks' boss LIFE at Nyewood Lane is rarely quiet.

Just a few hours after sealing promotion to National League South, Bognor fans were rocked by the news that manager Jamie Howell was moving on.

The former Arsenal man has called Nyewood home for close to 20 years, first as a player, then from the dugout. But a move to fellow National League South side Eastbourne Borough was too good for Howell to turn down, particularly given the limited finances at Bognor.

It means that the Rocks will be looking for a new manager for the first time since 2009, when Howell was appointed alongside Darin 'Dabber' Kilpatrick.

The good news for the Nye Camp faithful is that Dabber has already said he is not going anywhere.

The search is now on for the board to find a successor to ensure the club can push on at a level of football it has not competed at for close to a decade.

With finances limited, an emphasis on youth and a strong desire for the club in to play a certain type of football, options will be limited.

But Bognor fans can rest easy knowing that the board will not rush in to an appointment until they know they have it right.

I AM writing this on the same evening we won the 2016/17 Ryman Premier League PlayOff Final at Nyewood Lane.

The realisation really hasn’t sunk in yet. I really can’t believe it.

What a season by the players and coaching staff. Bognor are a true team and I am so proud to be a part of it.

This is now my 20th year supporting the men in green and white and they really did the town, area and county proud. Buzzing doesn’t really describe it.

But of course in true Rocks fashion we had to wait for the celebrations and do it the hard way.

Speaking to Dabba after the 1-1 draw with Met Police it was clear his frustration showed and we needed to up our game against Wingate & Finchley in the next match.

Everyone was asking whether we were going to lose at the last hurdle again but despite the poor form, we managed a 2-1 win.

Ollie Pearce netted both goals. He left it right until the end for the winner, smashing home deep into stoppage time. Such drama. Ollie really stepped up here when the team needed him to.

It was Dulwich Hamlet that also made it to the playoff final as they managed to overcome Enfield Town at their place with a resounding 4-2 win.

I think it was fair to say that both teams in the final deserved to be there. Bognor, having topped the league for much of the season, and Dulwich for being in such great form towards the end to finish third in the league.

I got to Nyewood Lane at 1.30pm and it was already heaving with fans.

The Hamlet coaches had already arrived and the main stand was filling up.

The place was packed and a record crowd of 3,119 (the highest since 1984/5 against Swansea City in the FA Cup) enjoyed the match. I have to say I wasn’t looking forward to this, having previous experiences in the play-offs

end badly.

But the players really embraced the occasion. I was surprised when we went ahead with Jimmy Muitt on 21 minutes.

It got better when Ollie was given a gift of a back-pass by a Dulwich defender to slot it beyond their goalkeeper to send Nyewood Lane into a frenzy.

So it's 2-0 up at half time and I am still worried. I know how it has gone down in the past.

But the players continued to battle and on many occasions had to defend and literally put their bodies on the line.

We won a penalty when Harvey Whyte was tripped in the box in the second half.

James Fraser stepped up but the goalkeeper saved it!

It got worse as Dulwich pulled a goal back when Ibrahim Kargbo smashed it high into the net on the rise an unstoppable finish.

Dulwich continued to pressurise as the clock ticked slowly down to 90 minutes.

And with five minutes added on. Finally, the referee blew his whistle after 95 minutes.

A pitch invasion ensued and I was left speechless. Well not literally as I was cheering hard but my voice had already gone anyway!

It was truly a remarkable achievement. Jamie and Darin have instilled a belief and work ethic in this team that is unrivalled at any level of football.

So as the cheers of ‘WE ARE GOING UP!’ reverberated across Nyewood Lane, my thoughts went back to 2012 when we last went up through the play-offs (against Dulwich) and that was my Grandad’s last game before he had a stroke and passed away shortly after.

BRTFC is the team I grew up watching thanks to him. It truly is a great feeling.
