Charity has worries over move VOLUNTEERS at a popular Bognor Regis charity fear they could be forced to move.

THe helpers who ensure the town's Shopmobility service keeps going have seen the future of its base placed into doubt.

THey are looking at having to leave the premises after almost 20 years.

But the manager, Marian Court, pledged the service - which hires

mobility scooters and wheelchairs would overcome any disruption caused by the relocation.

"People have got used to us being here.

We are in this situation where we might have to move," she said, "and we don't know where we are going to end up at the moment.

"We will just have to find new premises.

THey will have to somewhere in the town which is easy for people to access."

THe doubts about the charity's location have arisen because its long-standing premises in the old fire station at the rear of Bognor Regis Town Hall could be swept away by the latest regeneration plans for the area.

THe town hall's owner, Arun District Council, envisages enabling the use of the civic building in Clarence Road to be changed to a hotel and pub/restaurant as part of its ÂŁ50m revamp of the

JOBS had to be created in the latest regeneration scheme for Bognor Regis, the town's businesses have said.

THe chamber of commerce and industry members said they backed the initial ideas for a winter gardens, pictured above, on the town's seafront. But they called for jobs to be a prime requirement of any proposal which became reality.

Chamber chairman Adam Cunard said at the annual meeting: "I'm not massively opposed to this scheme at all.

At least it has parking in it, which has been one of the many issues with the past few schemes.

"We all understand why the proposal has to be residential-led with flats because it has to pay for itself. But, if it is going to go forward, it also has to have a sufficient number of jobs created to make it worthwhile for the town.

"Increasing the number of people working in the town in the daytime will increase trade for the other businesses.

"THe employees will go shopping in the town as well as buying coffee and food.

"So, I do welcome the proposals, but I would like to see more office space included in them to bring more people into the town.

"THe town centre is short of modern high quality office space. It would be good to attract someone like Regus, who offered shared serviced office space which companies can hire. THose type of modern open-plan offices are what we need.

Executive committee member Mike Maskell said: "We definitely need prime office space in the town. It's important, otherwise the town centre will not get used during the day."

As reported, Arun District Council has revealed £50m plans for the winter gardens along with a new and enlarged Alexandra THeatre of some 450 seats on the site of the Regis Centre. Also included in the proposal is retail and coffee shops and restaurants. THe upper floors of the five-storey structure will have 51 flats.

THe town hall could be turned into a 75-bedroom hotel with a Brewer's Fayre to replace THe Regis pub/restaurant.

THe proposed regeneration package also includes a linear park across the Hothamton car park with two blocks of buildings to include flats and shops.

Peter Baldwin, a fellow executive committee member, said: "I have looked at the proposals. THey are at an early stage but I have lived here for 20-30 years and they are the first set of plans I can support. I know it's early days but I like what I am seeing."

Committee member Sandra Daniells said: "Arun have come up with something which is worthwhile. It is important we do not oppose everything they do.

"It's early days and we should work with Arun to see what they want to do and how we can influence it."

Jim Brooks, a chamber member, said: "It is the best plan of all the schemes so far. I am generally upbeat about it."

Detached house is damaged after burglars daub it in paint BURGLARS daubed a Felpham house in paint.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the property in Felpham Way was broken into.

THe large detached house is currently under renovation. Between 9.30pm on April 20, and 9.20am on April 21, the suspects broke in through the back of the house and caused damage to all three floors by throwing about 36 litres of emulsion paint around.

A plastic sack of tools worth £50 was also taken.

PC Amy Lelliott, of Sussex Police, said: "From the amount of paint

thrown around, it seems the culprits would have been covered in paint themselves.

"Someone must know who is involved in this. We are asking that anyone who has information about this burglary to contact us.

"THe victim is upset and is offering a £50 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible."

Parish set to join housing protest

Mobility charity could face move and requires helpers From page one With limited mobility were still unaware of its life-changing service in spite of its vehicles being ridden around the town centre daily.

Shopmobility was keen to ensure as many people as possible were aware of its life-changing service. THe charity has some 150 members in Bognor Regis and slightly more in Worthing and Littlehampton where it is also based.

THey hire the fleet of 45 scooter and 30 wheelchairs about 1,800 times a year in Bognor Regis for trips around the shops, along the seafront and to events to enable them to experience life outside the four walls of their home.

A delivery service to their homes of portable wheelchairs is also available to enable them to enjoy journeys further afield. Hirings are popular as well with

holidaymakers in Butlin's.

All this is dependent on eight volunteers as well as Mrs Court, pictured above right.

One of the helpers, town centre resident Jon Alward, 60, is a former user of the service.

He said: "Last April, I had been practically housebound for about three months after I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was in a lot of pain and, one day, I had to go to the medical centre.

"I only live two blocks away from here but I got to my front door and realised that I was not going to be able to make it. I thought I could probably make it here and came in and was warmly greeted. I got a scooter for what I thought was a dirt cheap charge.

"From that day on, I was in here three or four times a week just going out for two hours. It was so liberating.

"I'm pretty self-sufficient and I say social media kept me sane and Shopmobility kept me mobile.

"I've been treated now and I help out here now to give something back."

More volunteers are needed to enable the opening hours to be extended from the current all day weekdays to Saturdays.

Extra helpers would also be appreciated for roles in the office and storing and working on its fleet.

"Using a mobility aid can be the only way some people can get out. It's the most awful feeling in the world to feel isolated and lonely," she said.

"THat's what has kept me here for 12 years - giving people the freedom to get out."

Arun's plans are in their early stages and formal proposals have yet to be compiled or arrangements made for any of its tenants of the town hall.

A PLEDGE of action has been given by Aldwick councillors against thousands of planned houses.

Cllr Lillan Richardson, chairman of Aldwick Parish Council, said it would meet to discuss how it joined with its neighbouring parishes to support them.

She told the Aldwick electors' meeting: “No doubt the biggest issue of the year, and the coming year, is the revised local plan and the requirements that have come out of it for two of our parish neighbours, Pagham and Bersted, being asked to take large numbers of dwellings.

“THere's absolutely no doubt that major development at Pagham and Bersted will have a significant impact on us and we need to engage with those parishes to support them and their efforts to bring a degree of sense to these processes.

“THis, of course, might require us to contribute finances and we will keep you engaged about our thoughts as to how we will do that.”

She said Aldwick Parish Council would respond to the consultation by Arun District Council into the changes to its local plan land use blueprint.

THis period lasts until May 30.

THe parish council's response would be decided at a forthcoming meeting.

“It is the most important thing to happen in this area for a long, long time," she told last THursday's meeting. “We will be involved and deeply involved because we will be affected by it. But we need to meet to decide how we will get involved. Don't think we are just sitting here – because

we are not.

“It's not a case of happy Aldwick sitting in the middle and the building is going on around us.

“We have not got the big sites that Pagham and Bersted have but the housing will have an effect on us.

“THe infrastructure is not sufficient – the NHS, the water, the flooding. It will all impact on us.

“THere is a need for housing but where, and how many, is the matter we have to pay attention to.”

Cllr Ron Hurstwaite said: “It is right that we do respond because everything that happens in Bersted and Pagham has an impact on us.

“It's possible that's more than the parishes where the building is going on because everything has to come through here.

“THis is a vital period because, if we let it go and don't do anything about it, the development will happen.”

Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement member Alan Privett said the area would be overwhelmed with development if it took place on the strategic housing sites put forward by Arun.

“THey seem to want to tell Pagham and the surrounding area they are going to be used whether we like it or not. It is prime agricultural land and it does not make sense.

“We have a massive traffic issue here and it will not get any better.

"If the planning inspector votes this through, and says it's fine, we have lost. It's very difficult to fight the decision once the strategic sites are agreed upon,” he added.

Pension battlers' meeting WOMEN fighting for better pension treatment will be meeting in Felpham next week.

THe newly-formed Bognor Regis and Chichester South Coast Group of WASPI is staging the session at THe George Inn in Felpham Road at 11.30am next THursday.

THe group was formed by North Bersted resident Jill Robertson after she was delighted by the response to article in the

Post about Women Against State Pension Inequality.

THe organisation was formed to highlight the unfair situation being faced by women as their state pension age was rapidly raised from 60 to 66 by the government.

Jill said she was delighted the matter was raised in the Commons by the Shadow Leader at Prime Minister's Questions.

` Viaduct repairs MOTORISTS will face delays next month while essential repairs are carried out to the A259 viaduct in North Bersted.

THe structure forms part of the £28m western section of the Bognor Regis Relief Road and opened in March, 2016. But developer Barratt Homes is closing one lane of the half a kilometre long viaduct during a weekend next month.

THis follows a safety inspection at the end of its first year in use by thousands of motorists a day.

A Barratt Homes spokesman said: "THis inspection identified some minor defects on the bridge joints and parapet railings which require rectifying.

"In order to minimise disruption, it is planned that works on the highway are carried out over one weekend in early May. "THis will involve working during the day and overnight with single lane temporary traffic lights on the viaduct."

He said inspections at the end of the first year was standard practice for the construction industry with such projects.

A spokesman for the highways authority, West Sussex County Council, said the inspection was needed to highlight issues which had to be repaired before it took over the bridge and became responsible for its maintenance.

"THe most significant issue identified is leaking expansion joints on the viaduct structure. THe repairs are being undertaken at the developers' expense. THey are not structural/safety problems," he said.

Fourth screen for cinema is backed WORK will start in June to add an extra screen to the cinema in Bognor Regis.

Town councillors have agreed to take out a further £100,000 loan to add to the £850,000 previously approved to enable the expansion of the Picturedrome Cinema to go ahead.

THe decision by 9-1 votes, with one abstention, came after an hour-long extraordinary meeting on Monday. It paves the way for the 114-seat fourth screen to open next spring in a single storey extension at the rear of the building.

A round of applause broke out in the town hall chamber among most of the 11 councillors and eight members of the public present after the vote.

Town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon said: "It's not been an easy decision to make. I think you have made the right decision. I thank everybody for their input into this."

THe decision was the third time the council had backed the extra screen at the town centre picture house in 27 months.

THe original decision, in March, 2015, to spend £850,000 was put on hold after the council elections two months later because newly-elected members wanted to take a fresh look at the situation at the council-owned building.

THe go-ahead was given later that year after residents had backed the idea. But construction work failed to start after the owner of a property next door to the Canada Grove attraction refused to allow the builder's crane to swing over his land.

THis led the council's contractor, Cheesemur Building Contractors, to devise an alternative method of building.

THat involved extra costs, plus inflation

for construction projects, to take the overall cost to £965,823. THese additional expenses will be covered by the fresh 25year loan with the repayments met by the cinema's tenant, the Picturedrome Electric THeatre Company, paying up to £500 a month in extra rent.

Cllr Martin Smith (LD, Hotham) said the council had bought the cinema to benefit the town's residents.

"THe residents of Hotham want this. I have failed to find anybody who said they did not want me to support this," he said.

Cllr Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said a poll he had carried out had shown some 90 per cent backing for the new screen.

"Council taxpayers are not going to pay any more for this. I believe the majority of people want this to go ahead," he said."We need to go ahead with this project and make it work. We should be proud of it."

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said the town council's purchase of the cinema in 2010 had saved one of the better buildings in the town and allowed it to become an attraction which drew in audiences from around the area.

But Cllr Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) said he was concerned the town council would not make a profit until the loans had been paid off. He said: "I remember we were looking to get some form of profit from the cinema when we were originally talking about the £850,000 it would cost."

Cllr Jeanette Warr (LD, Hotham) said she would like the vote to be deferred."I feel aggrieved we have had such a short time to look through all this information," she said. "I feel we really should not be voting tonight on this subject."

Full steam ahead for busier than ever miniature railway DRY weather helped to create a record Easter holiday for the miniature railway in Bognor Regis.

THe lack of rain enabled the operator of the Hotham Park attraction to run services daily throughout the town's school holidays.

THe result saw more than 1,000 passengers of all ages enjoying the 900-yard circuit for the popular scenic journey around the open space's trees, shrubs and grassed areas.

Chris Lewis said: "From the time the school holidays locally began until last weekend, it was the busiest Easter we have had.

"THe Easter weekend itself was one of the busiest we have seen.

"THe lack of rain helped - we didn't have a single wet day which is unusual - and we also staged special events to attract people."

Good Friday saw a competition to hunt the bunny and the Saturday brought four adults along in bunny outfits to claim a free ride with their children.

Free Easter eggs were given away in two spells on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday saw seasonal decorations provide more fun.

Mr Lewis is about to reach his tenth anniversary of taking over the traditional locomotive and carriages.

It will see him at the halfway point of his lease with Arun District Council.

Passengers of charity left stranded after petrol theft

HEARTLESS thieves have targeted minbuses which transport elderly people around Bognor Regis and Chichester to medical appointments.

THe criminals siphoned petrol from six of the vehicles run by the Bognor Regis Shopmobility charity.

THey also caused varying amounts of damage to the minibuses to leave them off the road for several days. THis has meant the organisation's staff and volunteers had to cancel some clients' appointments straight after the theft.

THe theft took place last weekend while Sammy's nine minibuses and three cars were parked at its premises in Chichester Road in North Bersted.

It was discovered when the staff and volunteers arrived for work on Monday to begin their schedule of journeys.

Police forensics experts investigated the scene on Monday lunchtime and took away some suspected evidence.

THe damaged vehicles have been taken out of use until repairs are carried out.

"THis has caused us further disruption but we will continue to support people," said Mr Collins. "Where we can't find alternative transport, we are looking to Arun Community Transport to see if they can help. We can supply the drivers if they can supply the vehicles.

"Sammy has over 10,000 elderly and disabled members throughout Arun and Chichester. Who helps them if we are no longer an option?"

THe theft was the worst incident of its kind in the near five years Sammy has spent at its current base.

But Mr Collins said a few incidents of suspicious behaviour had taken place.

THe charity faced a search for new premises before its lease ended this November to add a further strain.

"Sammy has been operating for nearly 45 years and has always struggled to remain viable and affordable. THis sort of setback is very harmful," he added.

` New access is 'round the bend' A REVISED entrance to 50 new homes in North Bersted has been described as in the wrong place.

Cllr Paul Wells said he believed the latest access for the development on land west of New Barn Lane was dangerous.

He told Wednesday's meeting of Arun District Council's development control committee: "I'm not entirely confident with the location. It might be slightly off the crown of the bend but I think it's slightly more dangerous where it's like slightly round the bend.

"It possibly makes it a worse location than it was previously. I'm still not convinced this issue will be resolved, especially with the volume of cars that is going to be coming from this area."

Arun planning officer Claire Potts said the latest access was eight metres north of the location orginally agreed to enable access to the housing approved for the developer, Landform.

Eric Pagano, of Landform, said: "West Sussex highways officers have confirmed the revised access is an improvement over the original. Only one access will be built."

THe company had pledged to spend £50,000 on improving the footpath at the site, he said.

Bersted Parish Council had objected to the current scheme and said it wanted the original access to remain. THe access is linked to a separate scheme for 90 homes on an adjacent site subject to a public inquiry in September.

Market boosts town CARING Katie Jackson hoped a Bognor Regis fair would complete her fundraising for a summer holiday with a difference.

Katie used the town's first artisan market of the year to publicise her journey to Romania to help gipsy children.

She was looking to raise the final £100 of the £700 she needs for the visit to the eastern European country with some 30 other pupils from THe Littlehampton Academy.

Katie, 14, was with her mother, Karen Jackson, at the market last Saturday selling their homemade items such as wine bottle bags, door stops and soft toys to bring in further money.

"THe gipsy children don't get much attention and we are going to help them," said Rustington resident Katie. "THe children will benefit from our help. I want to help other people who are under-privileged and I feel this will help what I do after I leave school."

She was among some 15 stallholders, pictured below, at the fair held in and around Bognor Regis Methodist Church in the High Street's western end.

THe others included Linette Ackroyd, of Midhurst, with her Butterfly Kisses business of children's clothes and quilt and cushion covers.

"I've been to this market twice before and it's quite nice," said Linette. "It's nice to be able to get my goods out to the general public. Quite often, you find people who don't go online or don't go regularly to the shops.

"Events like this also encourage families to get out rather than sitting at home."

Organic food, jewellery, books and chocolate were among the other goods on sale. THe WWF animal charity was present as well.

THe market - one of three this year - was run by Chris Warden after having been started by town centre manager Toyubur Rahman.

"We have got some good stalls here with regulars and newcomers," he said. "THe fairs give this area a little bit of a lift."

Mr Rahman also said he believed work should start soon to smarten some of the buildings around the church. "Improvements are due to start. THere should be a lot of work going on around here," he added.

New oil well to be drilled OIL EXPLORER Angus Energy has been given permission to drill a second well at its site near Bognor Regis.

THe company gained the go-ahead to increase production from the Lidsey Oil Field off the A29.

Approval has come from West Sussex County Council following the original permission granted to a previous operator in 2005.

Jonathan Tidswell-Pretorius, the company's chairman, said: "We welcome the news from West Sussex County Council. THe Lidsey X-2 well fully aligns with our business plan of providing low cost, low geological risk, conventional oil production.

"Subject to Environmental Agency consent and approval from the Health and Safety Executive for Lidsey X-2, both are in process, we will ask the Oil and Gas Authority for consent to drill Lidsey X-2."

THe decision means Angus Energy is confident it can bring gross production from the oil field to more than 250 barrels of oil a day in line with an independent assessment.

Approval for the Lidsey oil field dates back to the 1990s. THe current agreement was approved by the county council in 2005 and enabled three wells to be drilled.

THe initial well has been well established but it was a condition of the permission that additional approval had to be sought for the drilling rig and equipment needed to operate further wells. It is this aspect which the county council has approved along with a new security fence and new administration

facilities like offices, toilets and a mess room.

A statement provided by Angus Energy with its application said: "THe proposed drilling operations involve the erection of a temporary structure (drilling rig of maximum 47m height) and for a limited period of some 6-7 weeks' duration.

"THe site lies within a relatively rural environment and there is a general absence of buildings or conservation areas within the proximity of the site.

"THe closest residential properties lie approximately 600m due north-west, 600m east and 800m south of the site and the majority do not have direct views of the compound."

Installation of the rig will involve some 70 HGV movements, the company stated. THese will follow the previously agreed route. An extra 15-25 vehicle movements a day will be needed for the staff and rig crew and support workers.

Angus Energy said it would operate the site when the second well was working in line with the rest of the conditions imposed in the 2005 agreement. THis regulates matters such as site security, routes for HGV traffic, hours of operation and noise control.

THe new well is planned to be drilled to about 1,000m deep and will target the upper crust of the earth's Great Oolite reservoir that had - until it was temporarily suspended in February, 2016 - produced oil from the first well, which was discovered in February, 1987.

THe musicians and organisers have put together Our Generation as the Bognorphenia day expands to fill all the coming weekend with free entertainment from 10am-6pm on both days.

It is the first time Our Generation will have taken place as the crowd-pulling mix of music and Mods marks its fifth year. Founding organiser Kez Bridger said she was looking forward to tomorrow's occasion in Hotham Park.

"I became Bognorphenia as a way of inter-generational working and this is a way of bringing the community together.

Plan for cameras PLANNING approval is being sought for a CCTV camera installed in the car park of McDonald's in Bognor Regis.

THe fast food restaurant and takeaway has asked Arun District Council to allow the pole-mounted camera to remain at the site at the junction of Oldlands Way and Steyning Way. THe application also covers a pole with two automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Donna Smith, the company's planning agent, says in a statement: "THe two ANPR cameras have been installed at the restaurant to address the problems with customers/drivers

using the car park for long-term parking.

"THe location of the poles has been carefully selected to monitor cars entering and leaving the car park and to avoid blind spots.

"THe height of the poles has been kept to a minimum, whilst meeting the operational requirements of the system, and efficiency in the number of cameras."

THe poles were 5m high and the ANPR cameras were mounted at 4.5m above the ground, she added.

Scout symbol worn by Ben

` Andrew's Quins try RISING Middleton rugby star Andew Fadera has scored his first try for Harlequins.

Andrew touched down in the first of his two games for the leading rugby club at a tournament last week.

His performances have seen him selected for the Quins' U15 squad for the Regional Academies 12-a-side tournament this Sunday at Harrow.

His delighted mum, Jo Fadera, said he had also been to Hurstpierpoint College for a potential scholarship in its sixth form.

"All this and he's only 14. THe family could not be more proud," she said.

As reported, Andrew's skills were spotted by the London-based club last autumn. He made his debut for them at No 8 a few months ago.

THe holiday tournament in which he scored his first try took place in Bristol. Andrew was among 36 elite players selected from the 200-plus in the Quins' London, Sussex and Surrey academies. He scored their fourth try in a seven tries to nil win over Bristol as Quins won three out of four games.

Art exhibition draws attention

ARTISTS from around Bognor Regis were given the chance to share their creative work with the public.

At their spring exhibition held in Arundel earlier this month 25 members of the Bognor Regis Art Society proudly displayed their artwork for all to see.

THe free exhibition proved extremely popular and on the Saturday it saw 370 visitors attend.

Vice-President Philip Lee was pleased with the reaction they received.

He said:"It was a very successful exhibition. We sold quite a lot of our paintings.

"Artist Heidi Walmsley sold nine of her small seaside pictures."

Philip was impressed by the range of art on display, something he felt made their exhibition so popular.

He said: "What's great about the

society is the array of styles and subjects that our artists paint. Not many clubs have such a variety."

THe society hold four annual exhibitions in Arundel however they are hoping to also display their work closer to home.

"We are looking for somewhere to hold exhibitions in Bognor Regis. In the summer we hope to go on the green opposite the pier," said Philip.

THe artists meet at the Jubilee Community Centre in North Bersted once or twice a month on a Saturday afternoon for demonstrations which are sometimes followed up by workshops.

THey are always happy to welcome new enthusiastic and creative-minded members.

SEA SCOUTS in Aldwick and Pagham had a head start in connecting with their Australian counterparts.

THey were chosen to receive the movement's world travelling neckerchief as it goes around the globe.

THe Sea Scouts added to the item of clothing's online blog and took photos of it undertaking a range of activities.

THey included rifle shooting by Ben Inskip, ten, pictured below.

THe neckwear was sent from Western Australia and spent a week on the south coast before it was posted to a Scout Troop in Canada.

Jake Shoebridge, the Bognor Regis assistant district commissioner for Scouting, said: "THe idea of the travelling necker(chief ) helps the young people to realise the similarities and differences they have, even though they can be thousands of miles apart.

"It's a first-hand way, without actually visiting the countries, to have a taste of Scouting around the world.

"I'm thrilled Bognor Regis district was represented through Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts.

"We are really lucky that we have such dedicated and enthusiastic leaders in the Bognor district which allows Scouting to flourish.

"We continue to grow year on year, which proves that Scouting and the opportunities and skills that it brings still have a place to prepare young people for the future."

Assistant Scout leader Claire Inskip said: "We are thrilled to have been chosen to take part. We have a flourishing and rapidly growing Scout troop, with a strong leadership team which allows us to give huge variety to our programme.

"Recently, we have been trampolining, completed our World Faiths badge, been on a night hike and, so far this year, we have already been on two camps. One was in the snow."

County leader's delight at success of big parade by town's Scouts SCOUTING'S county leader was full of praise during his first visit to an annual parade in Bognor Regis.

Robert Sawyer took the salute during the St George's Day parade as some 350 young people marched through the town centre.

He said: "THis is the first time I have been to this parade and I found it very good. I thought the parade was brilliant.

THe turnout was really amazing and the weather has been good as well.

"THis shows a lot of commitment by the young people. It's good to see so many of them turn out and having fun.

"THe service was really good and they were enjoying themselves."

Mr Sawyer was appointed to his role as the movement's county commissioner earlier this year. He paid tribute to the work of the retiring Bognor Regis district commissioner, Ally Dodd.

"She should be very proud of how it has gone," he said. "THe district has grown to over 600 people, which is amazing and it's going to be about finding space for so many of them in the future.

"THe numbers in this district are growing and growing and they are the largest they have been for some time."

THe district has more than 600 members in Scouts, Beavers, Cubs and Explorers to lose its status of several years as the smallest in the county.

So many were in the parade it filled the length of the High Street between the London Road precinct and Clarence Road on the way to and from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where a service was held.

A series of new Scouts made their

pledge and presentations were made during the event.

Taking part in the parade on Sunday for the first time were the Jaguar Air Explorers of the Bognor Regis district.

Leader Philip Penberthy and his assistant, Emma THurston, were joined by 12 of their 16 members.

Philip said: "It was a proud moment for the young men and women to take part with everyone else in Scouting."

THe Explorers were formed last January for those aged 14-18 with an aviation interest alongside traditional Scouting activities like camping and earning badges.

"I'm delighted with the success of the Jaguars so far," said Philip, a former leader with the 1st South Bersted Air Scouts.

"We started the Jaguars to give members of the 1st South Bersted Air Scouts the chance to carry on if they wanted to.

"We had land Explorers and sea Explorers but none for the air. I'm hoping to get the aviation side of things going in the next few months.

"It would be good to get some gliding in at some point. I am also hoping to link up with the town's Air Training Cadets."

THe parade began in the London Road car park and marched to the precinct and along the High Street and followed the reverse route to end in the London Road car park.

As well as Mr Sawyer, dignitaries present outside the Royal Mail collection point for the march past included the town's MP, Nick Gibb, its town mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon, and

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun District Council's chairman.

Mrs Dodd was given a rousing sendoff by the assembled young people before she dismissed them from the parade to end her five years in the role.

"It's been very emotional and I've shed a few tears," she said. "But it's been a fabulous afternoon and the turnout has been spectacular.

"THere must have been 300-350 in the parade and we have outgrown the church. We had to sit the young people in the side aisles and bring in extra chairs. Not many parents were able to come in either.

"It's so nice the young people want to come out and march through the town.

"I think Scouting has lost the 'bad' image it had for a long time and it's now realised how much young people can get out of it.

"THe activities on offer are incredible and there is so much going on."

Caleb Slingo, ten, of 1st Bognor Regis Scouts, carried its standard for the first time during the parade.

"I know St George was a knight who killed dragons and is the patron saint of England," he said.

"THis is the fourth parade I've taken part in.

"I was in the colour party last year standing next to the standard bearer but this was my first time as the standard bearer.

"It was fun but it was heavy and I was a bit nervous. I've been in Scouting for four years and I like everything about it, including going on camps."

` Healthy books BOOK lovers can boost their health by enjoying a new reading group in Bognor Regis.

THe group's first meeting will take place at 5.45pm on May 8 at the town's library in London Road.

Further meetings will be held at the same time and location on the second Monday monthly.

A West Sussex County Council spokeswoman said research by THe Reading Agency had shown reading for pleasure had a host of health benefits. THese were amplified when a group formed to read and discuss books.

"Many people find that joining a reading group can help them feel less isolated, meet likeminded people and give them the opportunity to share their opinions and feelings."

Everyone who attends the first meeting has been asked to take along their favourite or most recently read book.

A campaign to change the perception of the town was launched this week.

Leading designer Wayne Hemingway led a workshop on Wednesday at which University of Chichester students became the first to give their ideas about how the views of Bognor Regis could be boosted.

An important part of this initiative is the #BigUpBognorRegis social media promotion where positive outlooks of the town can be shared by everyone. An online survey went live on Wednesday to also gather peoples' comments.

Mr Hemingway said the outcome would be a new identity - or place brand - created for the town.

He said: "A place brand starts to bring all the good things about a place together and focuses on the positives.

"Everyone is to have a voice, whether it's residents, students or tourists. THis is demographic design. And if people are negative we want to know the reason."

Lionel Bunting, the university's senior lecturer in marketing, was keen that the students got involved. He said: "I think it's really exciting. We want the students to be a part of it. THey spend such a long time in Bognor and they’ve got so much to give."

Students considered a range of questions and ideas. THese mainly focused on the positive aspects of the town that could be developed into a successful place brand.

Uni students' green actions WASTE not, want not became a reality as University of Chichester students put their thoughts into actions.

As part of their course, second year event management students organised the most eco-friendly Spring Fair to date.

THeir aim was to raise both awareness and money for the Green Campus Group that aims to promote environmental issues as well as sustainability and wellbeing.

All the fair's decorations were created from recycled goods and will be reused again at other events not only adding to the environmentally-friendly aspect of the day but also the funds raised.

THe students were given a budget by the university to host the fair. However, due to this year's organisers' green-thinking none of the money was needed and was then given to the Green Campus Group.

Staff of the university were impressed by this approach to the day which was held in the Chichester campus' courtyard.

Kate Cathie, the university's environment and sustainable development coordinator, said: "THis year has seen more people involved than ever.

"THey've used the space really well and the theme is great.

"We've been trying to push the importance of sustainability throughout the course."

THe fair, which took place in the afternoon, included activities, food and products to buy.

Among these were face-painting, a raffle, cakes, a photo booth, ice cream and

products from Lush, the Body Shop and Brocks Chocs.

Trampolining company Flip Out were on-site to support the notion of fitness and well-being. THey provided the fair with a trampet and fitness equipment for people to try.

Tom Capelin, manager of Flip Out, was pleased to see how many students took part. He said: "Today has gone really well.

I've really enjoyed running it."

THe event has been held in the Bognor Regis campus in past years and the students saw this as their chance to also mix students from both campuses.

Charlotte Hayward, 20, one of the organisers, said: "Mainly, we want to promote sustainability, but we also want to bring both the campuses together."

One of her colleagues, Claire Farmer, agreed: "THe turnout has been better this year. People want to know what's going on.

"It's great how this has helped people to come together."

THe event proved popular with students who gathered to enjoy the activities and stalls available alongside music provided by university music students and a delicious BBQ cooked outside the canteen.

Shyanne Clarke, a first year theatre student, said: "It's been busy all day.

THere's been a real sense of community this weekend."

THe current fundraising tally of the fair stands at £164.73. However, the organisers are still waiting for contributions from certain stalls.

TOWN councillors Steve Goodheart and Pat Dillon will be holding their latest open surgery in Bognor Regis today.

THe session to meet the public takes place from 3pm-5pm in THe Regis School of Music in Sudley Road.

THey hope the event matches the success of last month's occasion.

Cllr Goodheart said: "Many subjects were discussed from the state of the pavements to regeneration."

Other topics raised by concerned residents included the lack of toilets around the town, the need for better access to the beach and more free on-street parking.

f Fairtrade soaps from Lush

GROUPS around Bognor Regis could benefit from grants of up to £1,000. THe money is available for voluntary, community and charity groups for activities that promote or support wellbeing and health.

THe Arun Wellbeing and Health Partnership has a small grants fund of £5,000 with an easy onestage application process. THe next deadline for submissions is June 9 to be considered later that month.

Groups who benefited from a grant last year included My Sisters' House, Enable Me and Headway West Sussex. Priorities to receive the money include preventing illhealth and improving mental wellbeing.

Chance to choose council members VOTERS around Bognor Regis will be going to the polls next week to choose their new county councillors.

THe main political parties set out their views on these pages.

THe candidates also include four Independents: Gill Yeates (Bersted), Steve Goodheart (Bognor Regis East), Graham Jones (Felpham) and Derek Ambler (Middleton).

WHY VOTE for Arun’s Green Party candidates in the May county elections?

THe Green Party continues to go from strength to strength, from just a few candidates at the last elections to fielding candidates dominating the coastal strip from Worthing to Selsey and Chichester. THe party has fielded candidates in ten out of 13 county divisions in the Arun district.

TORY-CONTROLLED West Sussex County Council has cut £224million from its budget, leading to county-wide chaos for libraries, roads, social care, health services, housing, schools and emergency services, among other issues.

THe Arun district has the highest demand for social care in the county due to the increasing over-75s population.

But the county council is offering us the lowest provision of residential care homes – there will soon be thousands of places lacking. THe county council must be pushed to invest responsibly in social care.

Local schools are threatening four-day weeks and running budget deficits to protect their pupils from the effects. THe shortfall in education funding across the county must be redressed.

THe lowest-paid Arun residents need

a tenfold increase in their income to afford the cheapest housing, and we have some of the worst rates of overcrowding and homelessness in the county.

Housing and infrastructure must be properly planned, taking into account local residents’ views.

Financial policies we believe are incompetent and poor monitoring of privatised services wastes money so desperately needed to support essential services.

Labour’s candidates are all local residents.

THey have pledged to defend their communities from further cuts and

privatisation of essential public services and to protect and invest in society’s most vulnerable.

Enough is enough.

Holiday activities are a big success

Plenty of fun with Pagham play event HOLIDAY fun was enjoyed by dozens of young children at a play event in Pagham.

Some 40 youngsters went along to the latest Play and Stay day to be held by St THomas a'Becket Church.

THe occasion took place at the Church Centre in Nyetimber Lane and was organised by curate, the Rev Jo King.

She said: "It was a really successful day and we had a lot of fun. I organised the first Play and Stay event at Christmas.

"THat went really well and so I was asked to hold another one during the Easter holiday.

"THose who went along live in the Pagham and Rose Green areas but they were not all regular church-goers.

THe fun included various craft activities.

THe day's success means it is likely to be repeated in the long summer holiday, added Mrs King.

THe church is holding an auction tonight in aid of its Raise the Roof appeal for £250,000 to pay for essential repairs to keep the historic building safe and weatherproof.

THe auction starts at 7pm at the church, in Church Lane. Tickets - priced £5 each are available on the door.

Lots include Goodwood tickets, a David Beckham-signed Real Madrid shirt, advanced driving lessons and catering for an outdoor event. Payment is by cash or cheque tonight.

THOUSANDS of visitors created a new record for Easter at the Aldingbourne Country Centre.

Sunny weather and a packed programme of activities saw just over 5,000 people of all ages enjoy the holiday there.

Debbie Wells, the enterprise and development team leader of the centre's operator, the Aldingbourne Trust, said: "Easter excitement came to the Aldingbourne Country Centre with a record number of visitors coming through the doors.

"With bouncy castles, splash about days, Tom's Talking Reptiles and Hayling Island Donkeys, there was certainly something for everyone.

"THe sun shined over the two weeks and so many excited children had a fantastic time."

THe fun lasted for two weeks, with the exception of Easter Sunday, and also included bounce about days, a piglet day, have a go archery and a games zone.

Easter egg hunts and bonnet parades added a seasonal flavour to the event.

Funds raised by special occasions at the centre, based in Blackmill Lane in Norton, go towards supporting the trust's work supporting adults with learning disabilities to lead independent lives.

THe charity's next special fundraising event is a sponsored walk around Arundel Park on May 20.

THis will consist of three, eight and 21 mile routes through the beautiful estate. THe two shorter distances will be marshalled and will start at 10am. THe longest walk will begin at 8am. Contact abigailr@aldingbourne.com.

THis talk will set this perennially popular book in the context of Austen's career as a writer alongside her other novels.

Crafty selection from M&S does not disappoint Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

THIS week I somewhat enigmatically pose the question 'what do air, witch and needle have in common?' and you retort with the manifest response of craft and thus, in pursuit of 'wine craft', I headed to good old M&S principally to evaluate their new Craft range.

THe ever reliable and knowledgeable Ranjit at the main Chichester branch pointed out the Craft 3 wines and I began by sampling the 2016 Craft 3 Chardonnay from Adelaide Hills priced at £10.

A pleasant experience indeed with the wine proving to be flavoursome, yet delicate, with white peach and pear prominent and just a hint of cream soda.

Soft and creamy, slightly enchanting with a lingering flavour, this wine is well worth a punt and is akin to a soft fluffy toy-enjoy!

Slightly more astringent, but nonetheless most pleasant, was my second selection of a Craft 3 Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand from the 2016 vintage. Priced at £11 this is a splendid example of Sauvignon Blanc with full fruit flavours, namely passion fruit and gooseberry to the fore and a pleasant aftertaste to boot!

Deviating temporarily from the Craft 3 brand, I happened upon two New World whites and the first, in the form of a 2016 Barossa Viognier from south Australia, is currently priced £10. THis wine will appeal to those of you who appreciate a fuller flavour and has a real Australian 'twang', is bursting with soft fruit flavours and oozes stone fruit, apricot and wild flower, has a rich mouth feel, good length and a lingering citrus finish. Need I say more?

Remaining in the Antipodes, my second pick was a Seifried Nelson 2016 Grüner Veltliner, an Austrian variety from a brother

and sister wine-making team Chris and Heidi Seifried, whose father, Hermann, began production in his non–native New Zealand. THis wine retails at £11 and has a delicate fragrance with melon and pear notes. It is produced in a stony area with the vineyard situated circa fifteen kilometres from the coast and sheltered from the south by the Richmond ranges, rendering it an ideal growing ground for this aromatic grape variety and I commend it to you!

Reverting to Craft 3 wines, I finally paid attention to two reds and initially

considered a 2015 Craft 3 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Isla de Maipo in Chile, a region whose warmer climate gives a softer, rounder texture to the wine and this wine is slightly sweet with pepper and cedar notes and, if this style is your wont, you can avail yourself of it for a price of £10.

My final selection was of the Pinot Noir grape, one of France's ancient grapes dating back to the 1st century when Cistercian monks cultivated the grape in Burgundy.

Pinot Noir is somewhat fickle and can range in flavour depending on the vintage and where it is grown. In Burgundy, Pinot

Tomato Basil Salmon

INGREDIENTS • 2 (6 ounce) boneless salmon fillets • 1 tablespoon dried basil • 1 tomato, thinly sliced • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese • 8 Potatoes

Noir is generally light with earthy aromas.

Californian and New Zealand Pinot Noir have greater intensity and fruit flavour with stronger spice and game aromas. THe Craft 3 2016 Pinot Noir is priced at £13 and is of New Zealand provenance. It is soft and smooth with a spicy edge and good berry flavour. THis wine improves in the glass and could accompany lamb or most red meat dishes.

THe wine market is changing all the time and I recommend you explore these new wine ranges. Till we meet again, I wish you gratifying imbibing!

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Line a baking sheet with a piece of aluminum foil, and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Place the salmon fillets onto the foil, sprinkle with basil, top with tomato slices, drizzle with

olive oil, and sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese. Serve with mash potato.

Bake in the preheated oven until the salmon is opaque in the center, and the Parmesan cheese is lightly browned on top, about 20 minutes.

INGREDIENTS • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened • 1 (16 ounce) container ricotta cheese • 1 1/2 cups white sugar • 4 eggs • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 3 tablespoons cornstarch • 3 tablespoons flour • 1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled • 1 pint sour cream

Italian Cream Cheese and Ricotta Cheesecake

Method Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a springform pan.

Mix the cream cheese and ricotta cheese together in a mixing bowl until well combined. Stir in the sugar, eggs, lemon juice, vanilla, cornstarch, flour, and butter.

Keep your liver happy!

THIS may be the best piece of advice I can give you, so take note!

Modern society is a sad state that produces many stressed out and under functioning livers. When we overeat or eat processed or fried foods, or anytime we are exposed to environmental pollutants or stress, the liver becomes overworked and overloaded. When the liver is struggling, it can’t process toxins and fat in an efficient way.

THere are many foods that can help cleanse the liver naturally by stimulating its natural ability to expel toxic waste from the body. All it takes is a few simple steps to promote normal liver health. In addition to taking a liver cleansing supplement and performing at least two liver and gallbladder cleanses per year, eating the following foods is the best and simplest way to keep your liver healthy and functioning.

I encourage you to incorporate these liver cleanse foods into your diet as I cannot express how important it is to look after your liver: 1. Garlic Just a small amount of this pungent white bulb has the ability to activate liver enzymes that help your body flush out toxins.

2. Grapefruit High in vitamin C and antioxidants, citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges, limes, and lemons support the natural cleansing abilities of the liver. Have a small glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice to boost production of the liver detoxification enzymes that help flush out carcinogens and other toxins.

3. Beetroot and carrots Both are extremely high in plant-flavonoids and beta-carotene; eating beetroot and carrots can stimulate and support overall liver function.

Community News & Views THIS summer Pallant House Gallery are presenting a major exhibition on the British artist John Minton (1917–1957), marking the centenary of his birth and 60 years since his death.

It explores the artist’s achievements far beyond his reputation as a leading illustrator and influential teacher.

His work displayed will span: • Evocative wartime landscapes, including views of London, rooting him firmly in the Neo-Romantic tradition • Exotic subject matter in a new colour palette inspired by travel to Corsica, Jamaica, and Spain, including the newly rediscovered ‘Jamaican Village’ • Figurative work including portraits of young male students and friends that express something of Minton’s experience as a leading gay artist in the 1940s and 1950s.

THese have added poignancy as 2017 marks 50 years since the decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales • Book illustrations, posters and lithographs, showing his position as a leading post-war illustrator • Ambitious paintings exploring historic and current events, as he sought a new context for history painting in an increasingly abstract art world THe exhibition will open with Minton’s wartime landscapes, including moving depictions of post-war London, which gained him the moniker ‘urban romantic’.

Extensive travels to Europe and the Caribbean in the late 1940s and early 1950s offered Minton exotic subject matter that was an antidote to the reality of post-war Britain.

In 1951, a three-month trip to Jamaica inspired a new colour palette of sharp, acid colours and presented the artist with a backdrop of political and racial tension that mirrored his own search for equilibrium.

THe second half of the exhibition focuses on Minton’s figurative paintings which demonstrate a remarkable skill in draftsmanship. In many, the artist’s roots in illustration are visible in the use of black paint and outlining.

In the late 1950s Minton increasingly felt out of step with the rising interest in abstract art. THe exhibition culminates with a group of paintings depicting historic and current events – the death of Nelson and that of the actor James Dean - in his attempt to find a modern form of history painting, a genre which had become deeply unfashionable.

THis extensive exhibition opens July 1 and closes October 1.

A BOGNOR REGIS runner has praised the London crowds for keeping him going on his second marathon in two weeks.

Daryl Fairbrother, pictured above, completed Sunday's London Marathon in 4:14:06 - four minutes faster than he completed the earlier Brighton Marathon.

He said: "London was a fabulous experience, totally unforgettable. THe crowds were absolutely phenomenal in how they roared us all on, keeping weary legs going when you questioned yourself on the odd occasion.

"Running two marathons so close together was tough but a challenge I felt I needed to do. It was harder mentally than physically as your mind does go into overdrive about what could go wrong and you just want to get to the start line and hope nothing goes wrong in your preparation."

Father-of-two Daryl, 51, of Gravits Lane, has raised £1,800 of his £2,000 target for St Wilfrid's Hospice.

He works at Tesco and Edward Bryant School in the town.

Sir Hilary Flynn wrote to me asking for my vote in the upcoming WSCC election.

Hilary advised me that “West Sussex County Council provides 80 per cent of local services.”

I emailed her saying that, if WSCC supply 80 per cent of our services, why does Arun District Council exist?

I further asked of Hilary Flynn: "THis being the case, can you advise how we can rid ourselves of ADC and save the residents the enormous cost of having a district council who only provide 20 per cent of our services.

"It does not seem necessary or cost effective for ADC to exist and by removing ADC we will be able to afford the services Arun needs that are currently being cut.”

I asked this of Hilary Flynn as she states in her letter to me -“Maintaining front line services is my priority”.

My question of “Why does Arun District Council exist?” is a very important one and should, in my view, be considered very seriously by all residents.

THink of all the good we could do without having to pay the millions of pounds ADC costs us.

In addition, the failure of ADC to protect us by having a local plan has meant that developers can now force through housing, flats, hotels etc. in the magnitude they wish for and we have no power to stop them as, we have no local plan for developers to abide by.

Another thing to remember is that ADC have been trying to regenerate Bognor Regis for well over a decade where it has wasted millions of pounds with no regeneration having been achieved.

Houses, flats and hotels are not regeneration but investing in things to attract visitors to spend money in Bognor means the town has the income to regenerate Bognor in the way the residents want.

Not what ADC is still trying to impose upon us.

Let us ask ourselves again, Do we need Arun District Council?

ENTHUSIASTIC, older musicians are welcome at the Retired Musicians' Workshop held at Barnham Community Hall every THursday.

Retired people from around the area gather to share their musical abilities with each other as well as a modest audience who are welcome to come along and listen.

THe group mainly play instrumental music from the early 1960s, predominantly focusing on the work of THe Shadows covering songs such as Wonderful Land, Find me a Golden Street and South of the Border.

However, they do also explore the music of other popular artists such as Johnny Cash, Billy Fury and Cliff Richard, and on the second THursday of the month vocalists are encouraged to

come along and join in.

Guitarist Tim Mountain, aged 70, has been playing at the workshop for three years and enjoys the weekly sessions.

He said: “I find it therapeutic.

Some people can be shy but they all enjoy themselves in the end. During the first few sessions I was encouraged to learn the music but now sometimes I find myself put on the spot.”

THe workshop has been successfully running for the past six years and was founded by drummer Ray Clark.

He is keen that other retired musicians continue to develop their passion for music and attending the workshop is one way to do so.

A RECORD year for charity has been celebrated by the ladies of Bognor Regis Motor Club.

THeir 20th - and final - staging of the Regis Classic Tour has raised at least £35,000 for charity.

THe amount from the celebration of vintage cars will be divided between Against Breast Cancer and Orchid - Fighting Male Cancer.

One of the organisers, Ali Green, said this would build on the £523,638.84 from the previous 19 years.

"THis year (it) will be well over £558,000 before gift aid has been calculated after the 20th event, which is looking like a record year, if all the promised funds come in. THanks to everyone who has made this possible," she said.

"Sadly, this was the final tour. Like a lot of clubs, there are few younger members joining Bognor Regis Motor Club and this event requires a huge commitment of time and effort from the organising team.

"It has been the most fabulous fun but better to finish on a massive high with everyone wanting more than to fade into obscurity, which probably would have happened if it had continued much longer."

THis year's rally, earlier this month, was held in Rotterdam in Holland in a partial repeat of the tenth event. THe tour had increased in that decade from 38 cars to 67 such as that driven

THe weekend tour started with a visit to Schoonhoven's Silver Museum before going to the parkland at Kasteel de Haar near Utrecht. THe afternoon outing was to Holland's glass capital of Leerdam followed by a gala dinner at the main base of the Valk Hotel ARA in Zwijndrecht.

THe Sunday saw a return to the beautiful market town of Gouda and a look around the Louwman Museum at Den Haag for the final buffet lunch.

Ali said: "As the majority of the cars were over 40 years old, Louwman invited the cars to park outside of the building to be the star attraction for other visitors on Sunday afternoon, all shining in brilliant sunshine."

A bottle of Champagne at the finish plus THe Regis Classic Tour Trophy made by Kevin Law in memory of his wife, Liz, a supporter of the tour, went to Derbyshire couple Ian and Carole Potter. THeir sponsorship totalled more than £2,800.

A second bottle went to Sheila Tiller with an Allard L Type which was seen as the most coveted car. Kevin Law was also given a bottle for the best mask and wig at the gala dinner.

A boat tour around Rotterdam Harbour and a visit to the Healey Museum near Utrecht were optional ways to finish the weekend and enjoyed by 82 and 48 people respectively.

Sir I feel the decision to move the promenade bandstand is outrageous. I'm all for improvements for Bognor Regis but moving the bandstand is totally unacceptable.

THe bandstand is an important part of the town's history and is an asset to Bognor seafront.

Moving it to Waterloo Square is a foolish decision, let alone an expensive one. I am a proud member of Flashback Bognor Group.

THis decision should be put to a vote not just for councillors to decide what is or isn't good for Bognor.

THe people of Bognor should be also decide what should or shouldn't be done as well.

I OBJECT very strongly. Leave the bandstand where it is.

Silver screens have thrilled fans since 1908

f QUICK

Range of venues have seen top films to the delight of their audiences HOW MANY cinemas have there been in the town? THe first cinema was on the pier and known as the Pier Pavilion which opened on August 1, 1908, with the first film being shown of which the Bognor Observer wrote, “it says much for the enterprise of the new proprietors that by noon on Saturday arrangements were made for a cinematograph entertainment in the evening".

THey actually had to wait for the evening to darken before they could show the films - a world away from the cinemas of the 21st century. During the future years, it was planned to hold evening and weekend shows during the winter and then, during the summer months, roller skating would return to the pier.

Eventually, of course, the cinema screenings increased in number.

We next had films being shown at the Olympian Gardens from November 14, 1910, in what was known as the Electric THeatre, Olympian Gardens, Esplanade. It was an area of the seafront occupied by today’s Mountbatten Court, between THe Regis and Lennox Street.

Tickets were priced at 4d (2p), 6d (2.5p) and 1s (5p) for the 8pm evening show.

However, due to competition, the Electric THeatre was short-lived but the premises remained for many years as a theatre.

In 1911, there was much activity for the cinema-goer with the first purpose-built cinema opening on the newly constructed land end of the pier which was to be known as the Pier Picture Palace. With the opening of this cinema, the Pier Pavilion, at the sea end reverted to live entertainment.

Following the Pier Picture Palace opening on June 3, 1911, the Kursaal opened a temporary cinema the next day - June 4- within their theatre. THe theatre was used primarily for live shows, plays, musicals etc. It had a seating capacity of 850 seats, and was reputedly superior to many West End theatres. It became known as the THeatre Royal cinema from April, 1919.

Situated on the busy road junction by the railway station were the Assembly Rooms, later known as the Queen’s Hall, which eventually became the Picturedrome on June 5, 1919, and has subsequently been known as the Classic, Cannon and ABC. Designed by Arthur Smith, the premises were opened in 1886 and cost £4,500, when it became known as the town’s 'New Assembly Rooms'.

In 1910 it was renamed the 'Queen’s Hall' to commemorate the coronation of George V. One of its features was the octagonal lantern tower, which in the early days had a revolving light,

operated by a small boy pedalling a bicycletype mechanism.

During the course of the First World War, the premises were leased to new backers Mr Stoneham, Frederick Jenkins, and Mr Cooper who were local traders. THe proceeds from the first night were donated to the Bognor War Memorial Hospital fund and a union jack was spread across the screen and lowered to reveal a picture of George V. Progress continued and, by 1930, the Picturedrome had become equipped with ‘Western Electric Sound’ and dances were being held in the upper ballroom, within a decade, where today we have the Screen Two cinema.

Recently, someone wrote to me to say that when they left school in 1940 they trained at the Odeon Cinema as a projectionist. During the war, the newsreels were in short supply so after they had been shown it was his job as the 'boy' to take them to the Picturedrome for them to run and then be returned to the Odeon.

In 1954, there was an extremely serious fire in the Odeon, which resulted in it being closed for the first time - for four months. By 1962, the cinema had 553 seats operating beside the popular bingo of the day.

It had been purposely built in 1934 on the site of the recently demolished Albany House.

THere was a gala opening on Saturday, July 14, 1934, when the opening ceremony was conducted by Captain C Pocock, OBE, RN, the chairman of Bognor Regis Urban District Council, supported by the company's founder, Oscar Deutsch.

THe freehold for the site had cost £5,000 and the Odeon was built at a contract figure of £14,000 by William F Blay Ltd of London.

THe architect was Whinney, Son & Austen Furnishing and equipping the cinema totalled another £3,346. 8s. 9d. THe art deco building had the entrance hall centrally placed, between two low signs of ground-floor shops, with flats above.

THe Odeon name was set up high in the back wall. THis new construction presumably initially caused quite a stir to Bognor Regis people in 1934. Later, it changed its name to THe Regal and is today a bingo hall.

THere have been numerous cinema plans over the years, including a 690-seater cinema in Waterloo Square in the 1930s. In 1936, an expanding cinema group, Union, also applied to erect a 980 seat cinema there. Objections were raised partly on grounds of lack of need. Cinema seating in the town at the time consisted of the Picturedrome 662, the Odeon 920, and Pier THeatre 924 to provide sufficient seats for a population of 18,440.

Another plan was set for the Esplanade THeatre in 1993 with a proposal for a six-screen cinema. Even the Regis Centre, which was opened in the 1980s, had a theatre which for a time included cinema facilities. THis cinema opened for Saturday morning showings for children.

On several occasions the Esplanade THeatre showed films and it was there I enjoyed my first viewings of 'Old Films of Bognor' in both March and November, 1979. Little did I know what was ahead of me with the history of our town?’

Bognor Regis Local History Society was newly formed at this time and its members placed leaflets on all the seats in the Esplanade to advertise it. As a result of those films, shown on just a couple of evenings, we now have an active local history society and museum.

A large percentage of people are are entitled to free NHS eye examinations and this can be based on age health or financial requirements. THe following qualify for free treatment from us: • THose over 60 years of age • Young people under 16, and those under 19 still in full time education • People with diabetes, or glaucoma and those at risk from glaucoma • THose aged 40 and over with family history of glaucoma • THe blind or registered partially sighted • THose who are claiming benefits • People named on an HC2 certificate

A large part of our hearing business is the ability to provide a home visiting service, this can be to clients' homes or if needed nursing or care homes. THis is an extremely vital service for those who find it difficult to travel to make sure they don't miss out.

THis service does not cost extra.

However, we are unable to supply or service NHS hearing instruments.

Bognor and Middleton face off in T20 PostSport as club cricket season gets underway THE SQUARE has been rolled, the pitches marked and the teas have been made - after months of waiting the cricket season is finally here, with clubs across West Sussex keen to make their mark in competitive action.

Among the leading players will be Middleton CCC, who will be playing at the top level in the county.

THe Sussex Premier side have already kicked off the campaign with a defeat to Basingstoke & North Hants in the ECB National Club Championship.

Captain Sean Heather (94) and Jamie THompson (74) gave the south coast side a fighting chance as they registered 236 for 6 from their allotted 45 overs.

But the Hampshire team proved to be more than a match for the total, reaching the mark with five wickets to spare with four overs to spare. Russell Talman (2 for 36) was the pick of the Middleton bowlers.

THe Sussex Premier side will be in action locally tomorrow, as they travel to the Regis Oval tomorrow to play Sussex Division Two side Bognor in a T20 match (1pm).

Bognor have high hopes this season, and the squad has been lifted with the addition of

Marques Clarke from Barbados for the 2017 season.

Also in action tomorrow are Sussex Premier Division THree side Chichester Priory Park (CPP), who travel to Findon in the same competition (1pm).

It is a new era for CPP, whose first and second teams will play home games away from their city centre base for the first time in their 166-year history. Instead, they will relocate to Goodwood, where they will share facilities with Goodwood Cricket Club.

THe club made their debut at the ground this weekend when they hosted Bognor in a pre-season friendly. In a good outing for both sides, it was the visitors who went home the happier after securing a 43 run win.

Bognor's Ollie Adams won the plaudits with the bat after scoring 74 while S. Bingham took three wickets with the ball.

Speaking about the move, Mike Dannatt, Chichester Priory Park Cricket club chairman said: "Anyone who has had the pleasure of playing at Goodwood will know it is a fantastic place to play and improvements of the square and outfield have already taken place to make it suitable for a high standard of club cricket."

DARTS: Keith Robinson produced two 20 darts legs in week two of the Bognor Friday Night Summer Darts League - but it was all in vain as Chichester Snooker Club lost 10-4 to Friary D. Here are the rest of the results from week two:

CHICHESTER RFC's relegation has been confirmed - but the Blues did not lose their National League status without a fight.

Rob Lawrence's side went into the final round of matches sitting in the dropzone knowing that nothing less than a win would keep them up.

In front of a decent crowd at Oaklands Park, the Blues rounded off the season with a 20-12 success over third-placed Westcombe Park.

But that victory was not enough - as Sutton and Epsom beat bottom side Amersham to condemn Chi to the drop from National League THree (London and South East).

Roger Gould, the club's press secretary, said: "In previous seasons, 47 league points would have been enough to stay up but this season it has been very close between all good teams.

"If Blues hold together and play as well as they have in several matches, they will be a strong force in London and South East One." Chi took an early lead in the match, thanks to a Henry Anscombe penalty.

But Coombe replied with the first try of the afternoon. Chichester hit back with forwards and backs combining and holding passes to build the pressure.

A penalty to the Vultures' corner, lineout and drive put Aaron Davies across and down for a five point score. But Coombe replied almost immediately to go into the break 12-8 in front.

In the second period, Chi took control, showing great team spirit.

After some battering runs from members of the Blues pack, Phil Dickin took advantage of some quick hands to touch down.

Soon after, Harry Seaman body swerved and offloaded. Jack Bentall charged up, took the pass and hurtled through tackles to go over at the right corner flag to seal the 20-12 win.

Mr Gould said: "Chichester beat three top six teams at Oaklands Park. It was their poor away form which let them down.

"THey earned 16 bonus points, seven of which came from lost games. THey can be optimistic."

Chi urged on to strong finish as Lancing up-end City at home

CHICHESTER City are in danger of ending the season with a whimper despite registering one of the best terms in the club's history.

THe Lillywhites have punched above their weight all year to secure a third place finish in the SCFL Premier.

But, after finding themselves in the middle of an unlikely title battle, Chi have imploded and suffered four defeats in five, three of which have been on the bounce.

THe latest was on Saturday when Miles Rutherford's team were beaten 2-1 by midtable Lancing.

Alex Collard had given Chi the lead in front of a home crowd. But two Alex Fair goals close to the hour mark inflicted another loss on the Lillywhites.

Rutherford will be expecting more from his side tomorrow when they end their campaign on the road at bottom side Hailsham Town (3pm).

THe return fixture at Oaklands Park in November ended up 6-1 to Chi. With the Stringers only winning twice in the whole campaign, the odds will be firmly in Chi's favour once again.

Marathon job

by Tone Zone Lions up for the cup versus Heath TWO BEST friends showed the true marathon spirit by keeping side by side to finish London 2017.

A team of 15 from Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners were among the 40,000 to take part in the 26 mile race around the capital.

Among them was Kate O'Connor, who was running well until cramp set in at 16 miles.

She struggled towards the finish and, with the help of Carolyn Stapely, they both finished in 3 hours 56 minutes.

After the race, Carolyn said: "Although it didn't finish as we'd have liked, there is noone I'd have liked to cross the line with more than my bestest running buddy Kate."

Leading the way for Tone Zone was Simon Gill, who made up for a slightly disappointing Brighton marathon, to finish in 2:35.

Peter Lee achieved a personal best time of 3:02; Duncan Stephenson Gill finished his first marathon in 3:16; followed

by Danny Mahoney in 3:18.

Putting in just as much effort as those at the top of the

leaderboard were Jade Fish and Nicky King. Jade, running her 55th marathon, finished in 4.48 with Nicky crossing the line along THe Mall in 6.14.

Taking place on the same day as the London Marathon was the first marathon in Southampton for over three decades. Paul Coe and Chris Dummer both finished in 3.55 and Simon Bodsworth in 4.06.

A special mention now for Sarah Spurr who suffered like so many in the Brighton heat two weeks ago and had to stop during the race.

She had put a huge amount of effort into her training so the following weekend she took herself off to Boston, Lincolnshire, and competed in it marathon which she finished with ease.

THe week before Neil Strudwick and Nina Baldwinson headed to Boston, USA, for the 121st running of its marathon.

Despite the heat, Neil finished in 4:05 with Nina just behind in 4:06. Both then took part in London on just six days rest, Nina finishing in 3:43 with Neil following in 3:54.

PAGHAM boss Mark Bennett will be hoping to sign off in style as the Lions are on the hunt for silverware.

Bennett is stepping down from the role at Nyetimber Lane at the end of the season.

But he has the chance to end his 18-month tenure with a trophy as the Lions take on Haywards Heath Town in the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup. Pagham go into the bank holiday Monday clash at Hassocks (11am) as the underdogs, with Heath entering the last weekend of the season in first place of the SCFL Premier.

But Pagham have found their form in recent weeks - with Bennett turning to youth as he looks to leave the club in good health.

A number of the players he has introduced to the first team have big game experience, with Pagham's under-21s winning their sixth trophy in three years this past week after a cup victory over Seaford Town.

Before the cup final, Bennett will take charge of his final league match for the Lions tomorrow when they host AFC Uckfield at Nyetimber Lane (3pm).

Pearce said he was delighted after his side secured their first piece of silverware for xx years.

THe Sids hav emade great strides on and off the pitch after their demotion to SCFL Division Two last season.

A strong league campaign fizzled out with a few weeks to run.

But, after securing a third place finish, the Sids put all their focus into the final of the Division Two Challenge Cup. Goals from Tom Atkinson and John Phillips sealed a 2-0 win for the green and golds against Westfield at Shoreham's Middle Road.

Speaking after the match, Pearce said: "After a long season and missing out on the title to Bosham it was nice to end the season with some silverware.

"THe lads have been first class for us this season and deserve all the credit for the cup success. Tuesday night was another great team performance from one through to 18."

In SCFL Division One, Selsey rounded off their campaign in style after a 3-0 win over Seaford Town.

Goals from Joe Manners, Bradley Dean and Ryan Chittock secured the win for the Blues.

THat sealed a seventh place finish for Steve Bailey's side in what has been a very competitive division.

Two wins put Chi in the title driving seat CHICHESTER Ladies are on the verge of title success after two wins in less than a week.

Two comfortable wins over Basingstoke and Cheltenham mean that the Green Army are just two more wins from sealing the FA Women's Premier South West One crown.

On THursday evening, Basingstoke made the journey to Oaklands Park to try their luck against the league leaders.

But an assured performance was more than enough for the Green Army to reclaim a tenpoint lead at the top of the table. Goals from Kally Ambler, Charley Wilson-Blakely (2) and Cherelle Khassal sealed the win.

At the weekend, Chi headed north to Cheltenham. THe home side set their stall out to frustrate the leaders and make life as difficult as possible for Liam Greenfield's side.

After going in at the break level, Chi took until the 70th minute to break the deadlock, Khassal rifling home.

THe lead was doubled moments later by Wilson-Blakely before Jess Lewry netted twice in the final ten minutes.

Chi, who are still unbeaten in the league this term, are ten points ahead of Plymouth in second. THey head to Exeter on Sunday (2pm) knowing that just a couple of victories are needed to wrap up the championship.

THe development squad return to action this Sunday for their final game of the season.

THe match at Oaklands Park against Abbey Rangers will be a memorable one as it will be manager Richard Semarks' last game in charge before he retires after 43 years of football.

Rocks suffer title heartbreak as final draw leaves them short BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell believes his side have what it takes to overcome title heartbreak.

THe Rocks have defied the odds all year to be in pole position for much of the season at the top of the Ryman Premier.

But an Easter Monday defeat at title rivals Havant & Waterlooville meant Jamie Howell's side went into the last match of the season against Met Police needing a win to have any chance of being crowned champions.

Despite putting their opponents goal under great pressure, the Rocks could only manage a 1-1 draw - meaning they were pushed into the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

THe Rocks played their semi-final of the playoffs last night against Wingate and Finchley.

If they won that, then it is on to a winner takes all tie on Bank Holiday Monday against either Dulwich Hamlet or Enfield Town in front of the Nyewood faithful.

Regardless of how they fare, Howell is proud of what his side have achieved this season.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "THey are a determined bunch of lads who have exceeded expectations so far.

"We didn't train this week as we have got some people who are tired but they are ready to go."

It could have been all so different, if the Rocks - cheered on by a home crowd of nearly 800 fans - had found a winner against Met

Police.

A Jimmy Muitt strike in the second half had sparked wild celebrations at Nyewood Lane.

But an equaliser with 20 minutes to go meant the Rocks had to push forward in search of the one goal that would have sealed the win and the title.

For all they tried and all the pressure they applied, lady luck just was not on their side.

Howell said: "I thought we did OK on Saturday. We were not sparkling but we had enough chances to win the game but shots hit people, the ball didn't fall at the right time or we had simply bad luck.

"We conceded a bad goal but then we were really pushing for the last 20 minutes.

"Towards the end there was a penalty not given and then Gary Charman had a header when nine times out of ten he would have scored.

"I have got no answers as to why we did not win the game.

"It was not through lack of effort."

As news filtered through that Havant had failed to break down a stubborn Kingstonian defence, word went round Nyewood that a win would be enough to give the Rocks the title. But Howell denied that nerves had anything to do with it.

He said: "We all knew what was going on elsewhere. Sometimes that can give the nerves but I don't think that played too much of a part in the end result."

Playoffs deja vu for Bognor fans ROCKS' fans will be forgiven for thinking they have been here before.

For those who follow football, there are few who believe the playoffs are a fair system.

At the culmination of a long season of 46 matches, the best side rarely comes out on top in the four team end of season lottery.

But those in Bognor camp seem intent to make sure that this time round they do not fall short.

THis is the third time in four seasons that the Rocks have been pushed into the playoffs.

As in previous years they have home advantage for the semi-final.

Not that that has meant much previously, with the Rocks losing out to Lowestoft Town in 2013/14 and to Dulwich Hamlet last year.

THis time the hundreds of fans who regularly flock to Nyewood will be hoping it is a different story.

After a season where they led the way for most of the time, it would be extremely unfair - especially for Bognor who have been leading the way for the best part of five months and who were at least 12 points better than the other sides to reach the playoffs.

Conference South football should be theirs next year. But then sport is rarely fair.

IT'S BEEN a rollercoaster week - and it looks like it could continue to the last game of the season.

I write this before our playoff match with Wingate & Finchley, a game we are playing after we failed to beat Met Police on Saturday.

Before the game, there was a real feeling in the camp that Havant were not going to get a result away at Kingstonian.

We knew that if they did not win then three points for us would win the league.

But it felt like one of these days when early on we had five or six chances and couldn't get a goal.

We knew Met Police would be good going forward and a little shaky at the back, hence their league position.

But as soon as they got the equaliser I think we could have still been playing now and we still not would have scored.

We needed a bit of luck - but it did not seem as though the ref was willing, as was seen with him ignoring what I thought was a blatant penalty after a foul on me with ten minutes to go.

THe ball was delivered from the left and, as I kicked my foot forward, I was thrown to the floor.

THe ref said it was a coming together but, as I tried to explain to the ref, a coming together in the area when the defender didn't touch the ball is a foul.

I've seen the fan footage filmed from behind the goal and it couldn't be more obvious. I haven’t slept properly since the game as I knew it was a penalty.

THere was no way I would go down knowing that if I'd scored and we would've won then we would win the league.

I spoke at length with their centre half afterwards and he couldn't believe the ref didn’t give it.

I think the longer it went on in those 20 minutes we knew we would not get the goal.

After finding out the Havant result, a lot of the lads were down and emotional about it.

But quite quickly we snapped out it and by the evening all

the lads were texting on our Whatsapp group.

A few were saying that we never do it the easy way while others were saying it is more fun getting promotion via the play-offs.

We know we can beat Wingate even if we are not at our best.

I've got a feeling that we will win the play-offs.

Obviously, it will be tough but I know that a few of the lads think it is our time.

THe difference this time round is that we don't have Dulwich in the semi final.

We have played them a lot so know each other well and they are a nice club who play good football. But this time round we have also had an extra week to prepare.

After the Havant result although the heartbreak was terrible, it did mean that we had more time to prepare for the playoffs.

Also we have been on fire of late, we are not tired, we were not miles out in front and blown it, we expected to have to play in the playoffs THere's an overwhelming sense that we know what we have to do and more than capable of achieving that.

We have two home games and everyone knows that at Bognor we can give anyone a game. In recent seasons we've beaten Torquay, Sutton, Altrincham - some big sides - and no-one in our league or league above would fancy coming to us.

If we win through then it's either Dulwich or Enfield.

Dulwich play good football while Enfield play back to front early and will look to put pressure on us.

If we get through we know what to expect, we will know what we want to do and will impart it on them not the other-way round.

THe mood is good, everyone is happy and everyone aware of the enormity.

THese games are what you play football for. You play it to be in semis and finals knowing how big the games are and for a chance to do something like winning promotion.
