"THe local community wants and needs a successful pub-restaurant. THere is an obvious demand for it."

THe Friends could boast of having the funds and the business sense to make the venue a success in contrast to the succession of owners in its final days as

a pub, he claimed.

"We warned Arun District Council the current state of affairs would happen when planning permission was granted to alter the building.

"THe Friends always said a convenience store would not work in this location and that it would be left empty and derelict.

"THey didn't listen and look at what has happened. THe Friends aim to put this right and save the Ship Inn."

THe Friends were formed just over three years ago when the threat to the historic hostelry became apparent.

It was a successful drinking place at the heart of its community until they claim it began to fail because of changing managers and a lack of investment to keep up with the area's changing population.

Services will be voted upon EIGHT out of ten local authority services used by residents around Bognor Regis are provided by the county council.

Every time a motorist uses the roads, a child goes to school or a person walks under a street lamp at night they gain the benefits of these essential aspects of life.

How they are supplied is up for grabs at the next county council elections on May 4.

More than 40 candidates are vying for votes from electors to take charge of the council's multi-million pound annual budget run from County Hall in Chichester, pictured above.

THey represent all the main political parties as well as a few Independents.

Hugh Coster, the chairman of Bognor Regis Civic Society, said taking part in the vote was essential for the sake of the town.

"I would urge electors to find out the candidates in their area and what their policies are," he said. "It is is also important for the candidates to get out and about and meet people. It's no good just sending out a leaflet. THey need to talk to the voters to find out what they think about the council."

THose who are elected in the seven county divisions around Bognor Regis will have a say in spending an estimated budget of £1,361.7m in the current year.

Among £660m will come from the central government and a further £173m from income and charges for services.

Adult social care and health accounts for about one pound in every three (35.5 per cent) spent by the county council. Children - start of life services are the costliest

service at 18 per cent, with waste, fire and other services just behind at 17.9 per cent.

THese expenses have led the council to hike its share, or precept, of the overall council tax bill for households to £837.06 for band A properties through to £2,511.18 for band H properties to give an a band D average of £1,207.89.

THe county council has a base at Durban House in Durban Road. Its switchboard is based there. Nearly one in four of the calls received relate to social care. A further 11 per cent concern registrations and one in ten are about highways.

THe council has 5,700 staff, excluding schools staff, in four main offices.

Libraries and archives also form an important part of the council's services.

Its 36 libraries - including those in Bognor Regis and Willowhale - receive 3m visits a year. THey loaned more than four million books and 130,000 digital resources like ebooks, in 2015/16.

Members of the public also spent 1,300,000-plus hours on the public computers in the libraries.

Libraries enable users to keep up to date with newspapers and magazines. For older copies, West Sussex residents head to the county record office at Chichester.

Its eight or so miles of shelving hold thousands of historic documents. Among them are archives which date back to 780AD. Its historical photographs, prints and drawings number 250,000. More than 15,700 documents in the office are pored over by visitors every year.

Artisan market stalls return to town centre this weekend CHOCOLATES, candles and cards will be among the goods on sale at a Bognor Regis market this weekend.

Saturday sees the year's first Old Town Artisan Market take place.

Some stall holders from last year's market will be returning for the spring event from 10am-4pm to be joined by several newcomers among the more than 20 attractions.

Interactive mini-mystery stories will also keep young listeners aged from four to ten amused.

THe market takes place outdoors in the High Street around THe Unicorn and indoors at the neighbouring

Methodist Church's hall.

THis will be the second year of the markets with their variety of arts, crafts, food, plants and more under the current organisers.

THey were launched to bring attention to an often overlooked historic area of the town centre.

Entertainment in different forms is being provided throughout the day and it will include live music in the afternoon.

Two further artisan markets will be held this year. THe next will be for summer on July 15 and followed by the autumn occasion in September.

Residents seeking to buy pub for their community From page one Inns sold a 15-year lease on the site to Morrisons as part of a wider deal by the retailer to form part of a chain of convenience stores.

THe national grocer opened its M Local store in March 2015 amid protests from the Friends who claimed investors had been available to buy the freehold and convert the building into a pub/ restaurant.

Morrisons soon reversed its decision to open convenience stores and sold a sub-lease for the premises to a new company called My Local in late 2015.

My Local failed to sell on the sublease and called in the administrators at the end of last June to leave the property empty for the past ten months.

THe Friends' successful campaign saw the building designated as an asset of community value meaning Ei Group

has to offer it to local people if it intends to sell the property.

But that does not apply to leasehold arrangements. Mr Beam, pictured below with some Friends, said a delegation of the Friends had met with Ei Group's asset manager and regional manager to discuss the situation.

"THey said Ei were not willing to sell at this time and, if they were, the price would be between £1.25m and £1.5m.

"THe Friends consider this absurdly high, based as it is on the current rental of £82,250 per year for the site.

"Morrisons supermarkets are contracted to pay this up to May 2024, even though they no longer operate the store and have no plans to do so," said Mr Beam.

"Morrisons exited the convenience store business in 2015 and sold the lease of the Ship Inn site to the My Local

Group.

"However, they guaranteed the rent and when My Local went bust in June last year, Morrisons were on the hook to continue paying it in full.

"For more than seven months, they have tried to find another tenant with no success and so the Ship Inn remains empty. THe Friends want to find a solution to this mess."

A spokesman for Ei Group told the Post it was seeking to find a new future for the building.

"We are in contact with the administrators of My Local and other interested parties over the future of the site.

"We will continue to maintain dialogue with them to find a viable resolution for the property."

Morrisons failed to respond to an enquiry from the Post.

Warning about cold call scams RESIDENTS around Aldwick have been urged to give cold callers the cold shoulder.

Neighbourhood Watch volunteer David Norton, pictured above, said homeowners had to get rid of those who preyed on trusting individuals and conned them out of large sums.

He was aware of one instance where a West Meads resident was charged £200 just to have the fascia of their bungalow washed down. THey had been asked for £250 but only had £200 in the property at the time.

In Worthing, two sisters were charged £2,000 a time for gardening work they had not requested. THey were only stopped when their bank manager questioned the withdrawals.

Mr Norton, an area co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch, said these were just two examples of a vile business harming residents.

"THere is an ongoing wicked trade where mainly elderly and vulnerable Sussex residents are paying thousands of pounds for work that is in the main is unnecessary and unwanted by workmen operating in unmarked vehicles simply knocking at front doors and bullying their way into undertaking a whole variety of jobs," he said.

individuals. THe first step was to shun anyone who turned up unannounced at their front door touting for work.

THe homeowners could arrange with their neighbours to have No Cold Calling signs put up in their road.

"THere are currently 82 of these signs in the parish of Aldwick," he said, "mostly sponsored by Aldwick Parish Council but others were paid for by West Sussex Trading Standards and Bognor Regis Neighbourhood Watch.

"At the moment, these 82 signs represent the highest concentration of No Cold Calling signs in West Sussex."

Any group of residents keen to have a sign should register their interest with parish council clerk, Sue Batey.

THe signs should also be backed up by door/window stickers displayed close to front doors.

"THere are many instances where cold callers have walked towards a property and, on seeing the door sticker, have turned round and walked away," said Mr Norton.

THe stickers are free to collect from the parish council's offices in Pryors Lane. THey can also be obtained through the Neighbourhood Watch group or trading standards officers at County Hall in Chichester.

Roads should have a Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator as well to act on people's behalf for crime prevention.

` Badge ceremony FORMER servicemen and women can receive their Veteran's Badge at a ceremony in Bognor Regis.

Deputy Lord Lieutenant Denise Patterson will present the badge at the town's revived Armed Forced Day to those who served in the Army, Royal Navy and RAF. ` Elections work EXTRA volunteers are being considered by Arun District Council to help with the general election.

An Arun spokesman said: “THe Prime Minister’s announcement that there will be a general election on June 8 was unexpected.

"Obviously, as the West Sussex elections are on May 4, this will be very challenging for the elections' team. THe council will need to look at what additional resources we’re going to need and we’re going to be asking the staff who have volunteered to help with the West Sussex elections in roles such as poll clerk, if they are available for the general election too.

"So, we are getting prepared and things are being organised calmly and efficiently."

New school plan for North Bersted HUNDREDS of pupils could again be taught at a former school in North Bersted.

THe empty Bartons County Infant School is set to be re-opened for a year to provide extra accommodation for Chichester Free School.

THe free school's governors want to move into the site in Romney Broadwalk this September and use it for 390 primary school age pupils and 57 staff because their numbers are growing.

THe Education and Skills Funding Agency has sought planning permission on their behalf from Arun District Council for the temporary building with seven classrooms it wants to use.

A statement by its planning agent, Zainab Arshad, says: "THe existing vacant school will be used and an additional seven classroom temporary modular building will be erected in the grounds to the immediate southeast of the main building."

Bartons County Infant School was given planning approval in 1972. It remained in use until July 2014 when its 180 pupils aged four and seven were transferred to a new primary school to the north.

Since then, the infant school site of about 0.6 hectares and its one and two main building with playing fields to the rear has been vacant.

Chichester Free School has been based in temporary premises at Vinnetrow Business Park on the outskirts of the city since September 2013.

It has some 780 students and intends to move into permanent accommodation at the Carmelite Convent in Chichester.

But work on the building is not due to be

completed until September 2018.

Ms Arshad states the free school has an urgent need for more space because of its booming popularity.

"During the interim period, and for the 2017/18 academic year in particular, the school have devised a strategy to split the primary school from the secondary school for the 2017/18 academic year.

"It is, therefore, vital to secure an alternative site to bridge the period until the permanent school is completed.

"To assist pupils and parents with the proposed two-site accommodation strategy, Chichester Free School are proposing to help transport many pupils who live in the Chichester area between Vinnetrow Business Park and the North Bersted site by shuttle bus.

"THis will require the removal of four parking bays to the right of the main entrance to allow vehicle movement.

"It will further require the removal of five trees within the site," she says.

THe proposed temporary modular building will be located to the east of the site on the playing field and set well back from surrounding properties.

It will be moved from the Vinnetrow Business Park site where it has provided five classrooms since last September. New sections will be added to provide an extra two classrooms and an office.

THe impact of the school on the surrounding roads is said to be limited because more than half of the primary school pupils are expected to use the shuttle bus to leave some 116 oneway vehicle trips in the mornings and afternoons.

Felpham's Laughing George is a roaring success on first night COMEDY came to Felpham and was welcomed with laughs aplenty.

Held at the George Inn on Felpham Road the opening night of the Laughing George Comedy Club earlier this month was a sell-out sensation.

Comedians performing included the likes of Adam Broomfield-Strawn, Winter Foenander, Helen Bauer, Stephen Carlin and Mark Palmer. As the head-lining act, Palmer brought the evening to a side-splitting conclusion.

Oragniser Jennie Cooper, aged 43, was thrilled by the response from the audience to the opening night.

She said: "I am absolutely over the moon at the positive feedback from the opening night.

"A lot of people I spoke to said they were surprised at the quality of the

acts and that they were better than comedians that they had seen in bigger, more well known clubs.

"Everyone that I spoke to said they would definitely come back again, so I am confident I have done the right thing and that Bognor Regis really needs and appreciates having this type of entertainment on offer."

THe Laughing George Comedy Club will take place every month.

THe line-up for the next evening, on May 5, includes Winter Foenander, Marc Jennings, Ben Roberts, Iszi Lawrence and Jeremy O'Donnell.

New rules for harbour see people banned for longer

PARTS of Pagham Harbour have become no-go areas for people for longer each year.

THe sensitive areas in the local nature reserve have been placed off limits for an extra month in new bylaws compiled by West Sussex County Council.

Charlotte Weller, its countryside services manager, said the extended period was needed to provide more protection for ground nesting birds such as little terns.

"THe old bylaws used to restrict access between April 1 and July 31 but we have extended that time in the new set until August 31.

Ms Weller said she expected the rules would come into force this June or July if Ms Leadsom agreed to them.

THe new rules have been drawn up by the county council to reflect changes in the boundary of the local nature reserve.

Ms Weller said the alterations had slightly extended the reserve's area to 606 hectares. Some of the landowners whose sites had been included had to wanted to withdraw them. Others were keen to see their plots included.

"THe bylaws we had in place then didn't take account of the changes so they did not apply to the land which had been included in the nature reserve.

"THere were also changes which needed to be made to take account of a set of model bylaws issued by Defra.

"We also had to take out the regulations banning fishing and bait-digging and sailing in the nature reserve because we did not have the legal power to enforce those activities," she said.

A public consultation event about the proposed bylaws was held at the local nature reserve last January to find out the views of some of the 250,000 estimated visitors to the wildlife haven each year.

A simplified version of the approved bylaws will be made available at the nature reserve to enable visitors to find out which activities are permitted.

It will also be posted on the website of the local nature reserve's manager, the RSPB charity.

Market's special treats UNIQUE market stalls provided extra interest in Bognor Regis town centre over Easter.

THe speciality market which ended on Easter Monday saw some 15 businesses from around the country setting up stalls in the London Road precinct to sell a range of foods and products.

With the improving weather people came out in force to see what the stands had to offer.

Chris Ridley, of THe Mixing Bowl from Dorset, was present for the first time. He was pleased to see many customers taking an interest in his selection of unusual chutneys, relishes and preserves in a range of flavours such as real ale, beetroot and sweet chilli and rhubarb.

He said: "It's been good. Saturday was the busiest day.

"It's nice to be able to take your product out and meet the customers."

Chris has been selling his products in markets for 26 years and he hopes to come back with the speciality market in July.

THere were also some familiar faces among the

stalls. Bob Barton who sells clothing and gifts from THailand returned after the November-December market.

He said: "It's nice to be back here again, I like the town. I will be back for the market in July and August, it should be busier then."

Plenty of hot food was available for hungry passersby. Among stalls selling a variety of THai, European and North American food was Caribbean and African food company UK Mama's food.

Godson Ogwudire, the stall's owner, had travelled from Sheffield to be at the market and enjoyed his first time in Bognor Regis.

He said: "For me the customers have been very receptive. People like the idea of Caribbean food.

"It's been really nice. I've been met with such enthusiasm.

"THe tourists here have been looking for something different. What I do they would have to go up to London for."

THe speciality market is set to return to Bognor Regis from July 26.

` Motorists warned about traffic lights TRAFFIC lights will be in place next week at a busy road junction in Middleton.

West Sussex County Council will be using them to temporarily control vehicles around Comet Corner on the A259.

THey will be in operation from next Monday for three days to enable the finishing touches to be put to an improvement scheme.

A county council spokesman said: "Motorists are being warned to expect disruption and allow extra time for their journeys between the hours of 9am and 3.30pm while the lights are in place.

"THe traffic lights will be in place for the three days to allow crossing points and the central traffic island to be re-constructed.

"THe central island will also be widened to allow cyclists to cross.

"THe ÂŁ550,000 scheme will give motorists greater visibility and make it safer and easier for drivers, waiting in either Middleton Lane or Worms Lane, to spot gaps in the approaching traffic before pulling out."

THe work also included extending a decleration lane exiting the A259 on to Middleton Lane to slow traffic travelling westbound, the spokesman said. Drainage ditches were being improved as well to prevent water pooling on the road.

Pounds for poetry

Government's help is sought AN OFFICIAL request for a government review of three major housing schemes will be made by Pagham parish councillors next week.

THeir chairman, Cllr Ray Radmall, will submit the application for an official call in by government minister Sajid Javid of the proposed developments.

THe formal decision to apply for the secretary of state for communities and local government to decide the proposals was agreed by the parish councillors last Tuesday.

"We have got to demonstrate this matter affects more than just one parish - and we can do that. We have North Mundham, Aldwick, Bersted and Bognor Regis councils backing us in this matter.

"THey all realise the cumulative effects of these 1,200 homes at least on their areas with their roads being used as rat runs by the extra vehicles used by those who live in the properties.

"THat gives us a better scope of argument to take to the secretary of state."

As reported, Cllr Radmall announced at a public rally two weeks ago his council's intention to seek a call in of the three current applications for housing - 250 homes at Sefter Road, 300 at Hook Lane and Summer Lane (400).

Arun District Council is in the process of setting aside the sites in its local plan land use blueprint for 1,200 homes across the locations which it has called Pagham south and Pagham north.

Arun usually decides applications for housing but Mr Javid can take charge if he feels they are sufficiently significant.

He could order a public inquiry to be held with a planning inspector making the decision.

Taking part in the call in process could

cost the parish council £50,000, said Cllr Radmall. Consultants have been hired to provide expertise in areas such as highways and the environment.

"We will find the money. It helps that our parish councillors eschew their allowances, they are true volunteers, and that gives us some funds towards the expense.

"We have a 'war cabinet' of five councillors who meet every Friday," he said. "Each of us have a topic which we have been acquiring information about.

THat will give us as good a case as we can expect to put before the secretary of state.

Let's hope he considers it requires his attention."

THe rally at Pagham Village Hall by some 600 people was part of a lengthy campaign by the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement (PAGAM).

Cllr Radmall was among the speakers at the rally. THe others were Gill and Albert Homer, the joint founders of PAGAM, fellow group member Alan Pivett, Pagham parish councillors David Huntley and Peter Atkins, and Judy Gonsalves, a resident of Bersted.

She spoke about the effect of 750 homes in that area and the possibility of a further 2,500 off Chalcraft Lane. A pair of 14-year-olds, Sophia Moulson and Claire Toone, also spoke about the impact of the development through their eyes.

Nearly 2,000 people have objected to Arun about the housing. By Wednesday the total had reached 1,947 letters. * Strong objections have been raised by Pagham Parish Council to plans for 89 homes on Horns Lane, off Summer Lane.

Its chairman, Cllr Ray Radmall, said their effect on the environment was a major concern.

Chairman chosen CINEMA operator Adam Cunard has been re-elected as the chairman of Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Mr Cunard, who runs the Picturedrome Cinema in the town, was unanimously chosen at the chamber's annual meeting to continue in the role for his second year in a row.

He told the meeting the organisation had undergone some changes in the past 12 months. THese included the launch of the successful monthly breakfast meetings at the Aldwick Hotel.

"THe past few have seen in excess of 20 people attend and they have also brought some members to the chamber,

which is good," he said.

A development officer had also been appointed to tackle the members' renewals and attract newcomers.

"We have a membership of 70. We used to have 100 but a large number of them were honorary members for life.

"We would rather have slightly fewer members but more who engage with the chamber and we have a good base to grow from," he told the 95th of the meeting, which took place at the hotel.

THe chamber would continue to seek interest from traders on Aldwick Road.

THe group's size compared well to the chambers in Chichester and Worthing, he added.

POETRY lovers joined together in Felpham to help combat ovarian cancer.

Held at the home of Wendy Elston, 68, the annual event allowed literature enthusiasts, pictured left, to share their appreciation for verse in aid of a good cause.

THose attending the day were encouraged to read poetry either from the selection of books laid out by Wendy or something they had brought from home - whether selfcomposed or by a favourite writer.

THe readings were accompanied by delicious cakes and other treats supplied

by Wendy and her guests, and a donation for the day was suggested. Around 40 people attended the event to create a total fundraising tally of just over £300.

THe day proved to be exciting for those with a love of the art. Fiona Waters, a poetry anthologist from Dorset, said: “It’s interesting to hear what other people choose to read. We’ve heard some unexpected poetry.”

But even those without a background in poetry gleaned something from the day.

Felpham resident Simone Froud said: “I'm so pleased I could come today. I now

feel inspired to write my own poetry.”

Wendy was delighted by the positive response. She said: “It’s been a really successful day.

“I think ovarian cancer research is vitally important as it’s difficult to diagnose early on."

However, it wasn't just money that Wendy was interested in raising earlier this month.

She said: "We also want to encourage awareness of ovarian cancer.”

Wendy has been hosting a fundraising day for Ovarian Cancer Action every year for the past 13 years since her close friend Linda Creasey passed away from the illness.

Previously these days included the popular Music in the Lane day based at her old home in Bognor Regis. Since moving to Havelock Close in Felpham, she has decided to host a poetry day instead.

Wendy explained how important this was to her. She said: “I've always been interested in poetry and this helps to keep Linda's memory alive.”

Wendy is expecting to hold another fundraising day in March next year.

Fundraiser for new hospice

` Seeds are planted RAINBOWS have helped to brighten up a disused site in Bognor Regis.

THe members of the 2nd Bersted Rainbows planted wildflower seeds at the site on the Place St Maur behind the Regis Centre. THey were joined by the town mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon, pictured below, to ensure as many seeds as possible were dug in for the joint project with Bognor Regis in Bloom.

Rebecca Vervecken, the mayor's secretary, said: "THe Rainbows came along with their seeds, which they had been given from Kew Gardens, and, along with volunteers from the Bognor Regis in Bloom Working Group, prepared the ground and planted the seeds.

"THe Mayor, who is also a working group member, was there to lend a helping hand. We very much hope that, when these wildflowers come through, they will brighten the area that little bit more."

THe working group created a plaque for the site to recognise the work of the Rainbows.

BAGS of plastic bottles and beer cans found on Bognor Regis beach showed the need for a deposit scheme, campaigners have said.

Surfers Against Sewage's regional rep Kimberley Stewart had sorted one big black bag of the empty containers before the latest annual beach clean had ended.

She said she believed there would be two or three in total out of the ten bags filled.

"It really just shows the need for a bottle deposit scheme. THis is just what we have found on the beach today.

"All of that can be prevented if we had a deposit scheme," she said.

"It might cost money to set the scheme up, as the government says, but it would have a long-term impact. THe current situation is unsustainable.

"Events like this are absolutely worthwhile. None of this rubbish will

now be going into the oceans.

"THat's a big thing so it will not harm the birds or marine life of any form. THis is totally avoidable litter and it has to stop."

A total of 21 volunteers took part in the five hours of beachcombing staged from the promenade bandstand in the latest SAS project.

Among those who joined in for the first time was Freya Betteridge, 12, of Pagham. She said: "It's a really good thing to do and fun. Among the things I found were a scart cable, a shoe, a pair of pants and a baby's dummy. I'd do this again."

She was joined by her aunt, Helen Betteridge, 58, of Aldwick, on her fourth beach clean. She said: "THe beach is now safer for people, the birds and the wildlife."

GENEROUS staff at a Bognor Regis firm have been praised as the first business to help a hospice reach its dream.

Employees of Parsons Son & Basley stage a raffle towards the Dreambuilding project of St Wilfrid's Hospice.

Held at their Lennox Street office, the team were joined by hospice trustee Lis Spence who had the honour of picking the raffle tickets from the tombola drum.

THe raffle raised more than £163 to be added to the £148 made the previous week from a bake sale held in the office.

Lis was delighted to accept the money on behalf of the hospice. She said: “Parsons Sons & Basley are the first business to help raise us money. THey've been fantastic.”

THe Dreambuilding project aims to create the perfect new hospice site that can meet growing demands.

Lis explained how much money was still required. She said: “We need £15.5m. Last week we reached 80 per cent of that and we hope to reach 90 per cent next month.

“THe current hospice has adapted over time. However, it's still not big enough.

"THe feel of the existing place will carry over into the new hospice.”

She thanked the team at Parsons Son & Basley: “Without the support of local people we wouldn’t exist.”

Members of Parsons Son & Basley are also planning to take part in the hospice's Moonlight Walk next month.

Senior negotiator Helen Walden, pictured right with Lis Spence, was excited to be helping the hospice. She said: “Two

years ago we supported St Wilfrid’s with some fundraising events and the next opportunity we had we chose to raise money for them again.

"We have some ideas for other things we want to do to raise money for the hospice."

Prizes for the raffle were generously supplied by local firms and businesses as well as some of the office staff at Parsons Son & Basley. THese included vouchers from Reynolds, Polkadot Stripes, Ragamuffins and the Sussex Camera Club, a beautiful orchid from Fluer De Lis, passes for Dream Fitness and Tao Dragons and an assortment of wine and chocolate.

New giant sculpture in park has Alice's Mad Hatter down to a 'tea' VISITORS to a Bognor Regis park can step into a wonderland.

A new sculpture in Hotham Park brings to life the Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

THe oak and cedar work of art has been inspired by Lewis Carroll's famous book, Alice in Wonderland.

And the giant table is designed to be used for meals complete with jam hearts, sponge cakes and fruit slices cut into Cheshire Cat grins.

THe wooden masterpiece's unveiling on Good Friday was accompanied by some 13 children dressed as characters from the ever-popular tale to be the first to sit around it.

Among them was the Mad Hatter himself, Alfie Bridges-Iles, ten, from Chichester. He said: "THe table is very creative. It's really fantastic how it's been made. I've never seen anything like it before.

"THe park is a really beautiful place. I like looking out for the wildlife."

Five-year-old Kiyanna Johnson, of Bognor Regis, was dressed as a mixture of Alice and the Rabbit.

She said: "I like the table and how it's been made. I want to have a picnic on it.

"My favourite characters in the book are Alice and the White Rabbit."

THe sculpture was installed by Hotham Park Heritage Trust at a cost of several

thousand pounds from the profits of last year's country fair it staged in the park.

Young visitors to the fair chose Alice in Wonderland from three themes to inspire a series of sculptures of which the table is the first.

Arundel sculptor Simon Groves spent 15 days creating the 8ft X 2.5ft table with clocks in each corner, playing cards along the centre and eight mushroom seats. THe Mad Hatter is a separate figure at the head of the table. All the pieces weigh just over a ton combined.

Simon said: "It's nice to come along and see the sculpture as it should be.

Everything has been done with a chain saw, with sanding by my assistant, Harrison Doughty, to take the roughness off. I'm in my seventh year as a sculptor and this is probably one of the largest things I have made.

"THe heritage trust have been delightful to work with."

THe table was unveiled by Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon, after a countdown from three.

He said: "THis is a wonderful piece of sculpture. Hopefully, it's going to get lots and lots of use."

Hotham Park Heritage Trust events officer Debbie Northcott said: "THe table is lovely. We think it's splendid.

"We hope to install more sculptures

from the profits we make at this year's country fair on August 5 and 6."

Rosemary Warren, the chairman of the heritage trust, said: "THe table is a marvellous piece of art and it's a wonderful addition to the park.

"I am sure the table will be well used. I like to think the children will look upon it as one of their possessions and look after it accordingly.

"It will be followed by further additions from Alice in Wonderland as a result of the decision by the children."

Dozens of families followed the table's unveiling by enjoying their own tea parties in the Easter sunshine.

Lively entertainment at the ceremony was provided by an open-air performance by Knightstar Productions youth theatre group of songs from the Disney musical version of Alice in Wonderland.

THe table is the latest improvements to the park carried out by the trust in the past 20 years backed by funds raised from generous members of the public.

THey are joining together in a school links programme as part of this year's Southdowns Folk Festival. THe unique tie-up is being funded by just under £10,000 from the Awards for All national lottery funding scheme.

Emily Barden, the leader for singing and projects at West Sussex Music, said: "We are really excited about this new musical project and, quickly, five local primary schools signed up to take part.

"THey are St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Rose Green primary, South Bersted primary, Nyewood junior and Southway primary.

"THis project will result in a massed choir of approximately 150 children, aged 7-9, learning songs in a folk idiom, culminating in a spectacular joint performance at the schools' concert.

THis will have the theme of Songs from the Sea and take place at the Regis Centre on September 23 during the latest staging of the popular music and dance festival from September 21-24.

Festival chairman Roger Nash said: "THis is an excellent piece of news and will enable us to work with West Sussex Music, local primary schools and others in an exciting music programme over the next few months."

Hazel Latus, from the Regis Centre, said: "We have the experience and facilities to make sure the schools' concert is a big hit."

New projector puts focus on films at town centre cinema

FILM fans in Bognor Regis can enjoy big screen action better than ever.

A 4K projector has been installed at the town's Picturedrome to give audiences the best cinema experience the venue has offered.

THe £50,000 hi-tech item means Screen One boasts the latest Ultra HD technology to enable all the Hollywood blockbusters to be viewed in stunning detail and vibrant colours. Among the box office hits being lined up for later this year are the new Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Cinema operator Adam Cunard said the projector had replaced an outdated one which showed films in 2K definition.

"THe need for the renewal gave me the chance to update the way films are shown in the main screen," said Adam.

"THe new projector is in keeping with my aim to always offer the best cinemagoing experience for modern audiences in a traditional setting at the best value for money possible. THe increasing number of sell-out screenings we are hosting shows this combination is being appreciated by more and more customers."

THe latest investment at the historic picture house coincides with the tenth anniversary of Mr Cunard's family firm, the Picturedrome Electric THeatre Company, starting to run the venue.

He said: "I'm delighted we have celebrated ten years in charge of the cinema. Bognor Regis is my home town

and I'm as firmly committed to operating a top-class cinema now as I was when I prepared to take it over.

"A lot has happened in those ten years.

I have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on new seating, new screens and the new Screen THree. But the prices have stayed the same at £2.50 weekdays and £3.50 weekends. I intend to freeze them for as long as possible."

THe Victorian building has shown films since 1919 but a succession of operators in the 1980s and 90s had left it lacking in investment. THe historic structure was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and audiences began to desert the two screens it then contained.

Cineworld's opening in Chichester seemed to have dealt another blow to the Picturedrome's survival and the then owner of the attraction on the corner of Linden Road and Canada Grove, a private company based in Brighton, began plans to convert Screen One into flats.

Town councillors responded to public alarm at the loss of the Grade II-listed facility, which dates from 1886, and bought the building to begin essential external repairs. Mr Cunard had already taken over the cinema's operation and won the right to a new 25-year lease in 2012 to give his company the certainty to invest further.

"I'm always seeking to improve the cinema," he added. "I look forward to the 114-seat fourth screen being built by the town council so more films can be shown."

Tragic aircrew remembered PROUD Derek Pallett watched as a memorial to his cousin was unveiled in Felpham.

THe plaque pays tribute to the sacrifice paid by the four-strong aircrew of a Second World War bomber which crashed 75 years ago close to its site.

THe memorial is the only one which recalls the death of the airmen who were led by Mr Pallett's cousin and their pilot, newly married Sgt Stanley Culmer, 26.

Mr Pallett, 83, of Ormskirk in Lancashire, attended the ceremony last Saturday with his wife, Helen, pictured right. He had never known what happened to his cousin but he does remember being taken to a sweetshop by him to buy chocolate drops.

He said: "I feel very proud. It's been quite a while we have been looking for some memorial of my cousin. We looked at several different memorials.

"After looking around like we did, this is remarkable. We feel he has been officially remembered now.

"I am surprised and delighted at the turnout here today."

About 150 people attended the ceremony of some 20 minutes held in Sea Road.

Exactly 75 years earlier, and the No 144 Squadron twin-engined Handley-Page Hampden AT110 - based at RAF North Luffenham in Rutland - was on a Bomber Command mission to attack shipping and the docks at Le Havre in France.

No-one knows what went wrong an hour or so after the aircraft took off at night but a possible engine fire caused it to crash in flames just 100 yards short of the English

Channel. THe other crew members were Sgt RE Nation, 21; Sgt JA Hutchison, 25; and Sgt D Manning, 21.

An original memorial to the crash, installed about five years ago, still remains attached to the boundary wall of Butlin's.

But the replacement is larger and more prominent. It cost some £1,200 and its installation was led by the Bognor Regis branch of the Royal Air Forces Association.

Branch secretary David Hewings said: "David Pallett's recollections of the very brief time he had with his cousin have added an awful lot of meaning to this service. It is the first time we have had a known relative of the aircrew with us."

THe Rev John Challis read out the names of the aircrew before a short reading from Psalm 21. He said: "Seventy-five years ago, seems a very long time ago - and I was only a few months old when the Hampden bomber crashed near here but the courage and dedication to duty of these four young crewmen should still be remembered all these years later."

Cadets Gregory Cocks, 15, and Emily Sherrington, 12, of the 2351 Sqn Air Training Corps in Bognor Regis provided a guard of honour to the memorial and performed the unveiling of the Union flag.

Cdt Cocks said: "It's really important we remember the aircrew and preserve the heritage that we have. By remembering these specific people, we remember all those who have given their lives."

RAFA branch president Ron Flatt laid a red, white and blue wreath on the memorial during the service.

DOZENS of paintings will be on show at Pagham's parish church next weekend.

St THomas à Becket Church is staging its annual art exhibition during the bank holiday weekend.

THe event will be open from 10am5pm on the Saturday, midday-5pm on Sunday and 10am-5pm on the final day.

It will be the 19th festival to be staged to raise funds for the church.

Most of the works are traditionally entered by artists from the Bognor Regis area. Worshippers at the church are seeking to raise £250,000 for major repairs to its roof.

` Virtual nursing BULLYING and drugs are among the problems raised by young people in the first year of a virtual nursing service for West Sussex and Brighton & Hove.

More than 700 young people in the areas have used ChatHealth in its initial 12 months.

A video has been launched by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust to mark ChatHealth's anniversary of providing confidential support and advice from school nurses via text messaging on 07840 635424. THe service runs 9am4.30pm weekdays and has received 2,830 messages so far.

A trust spokesman said: "It's an easy way for young people to confidentially ask for help. Confidential advice covers a wide range of issues such as bullying, eating, sleeping and drug and alcohol issues."

Rocks ready to go for push for promotion HUNDREDS of Rocks fans are set to cheer the club on to promotion this week - despite an Easter setback putting the party on hold for a few days.

Bognor Regis Town FC have been flying the flag for the town all season, sitting at the top of the Ryman Premier for most of the campaign.

But hopes of promotion to the Conference South - England's sixth tier of football - were dashed this weekend when the side were defeated to local rivals Havant & Waterlooville.

THat means with just one game to go in the season the Rocks are two points behind their bitter adversaries.

THey must win at Nyewood Lane tomorrow against Met Police and hope that Havant lose or draw at Kingstonian to win the league.

If that does not happen then the Rocks will go into the playoffs, with the semifinals taking place next THursday before the final on the May 1 bank holiday.

Bognor will play both matches at Nyewood Lane, if they make it that far.

Rocks fan Kelly Davis, 32, said: "I know we can do it - the players have done brilliantly all year and they just need one final push to get us promoted."

THe week started off so brightly with the Rocks beating Harlow 3-0 at Nyewood

Lane.

A crowd of close to 800 cheered Bognor on to the victory over very physical opponents.

But two goals from James Fraser and a Gary Charman header sent many of the Rocks fans home with a smile on their faces and hopes of a promotion party.

THen it was on to the heart-breaking match at Havant on Easter Monday watched by a record crowd of 3,455 fans.

Speaking after the match against Havant, Rocks manager Jamie Howell said: "I just want to thank the fans.

"I was so overwhelmed with the amount of support at Havant and was so disappointed for the players and supporters and everyone involved at how things turned out as I don't think it gave a true reflection of what we're about - that's what has really hurt me the most "We need to be a bit braver and perform better on the big day.

"We've done that in the past and we owe the fans that to make sure we are ready to win the next three games."

Rocks fans went into the Hawks fixture in good spirits after the win last Saturday.

Richard Essen, 48, from Bognor Regis, said: "THis game could have been written from the start of the season after Rutherford and Prior went to Havant."

After the Harlow game, Adrian Williams, 61, from Pagham, said: "I thought it was a shame we didn't score more goals. And it looks like we have not played as well as we have because two of the goals were penalties."

` New minibus for Pagham shoppers MEMBERS of a Pagham group will soon be able to travel in more comfort.

Pagham and District Residents' Association has ordered a new minibus.

THe vehicle - costing just under £39,000 - will have just 14 seats to allow more room for shopping trolleys and bags. It will also boast heating and air conditioning when it arrives in three months.

Iain Balch, the association's treasurer, said the minibus would ensure its invaluable shopping trips could continue.

"If we didn't do these journeys, a lot of the ladies we transport would not be able to get their shopping. THey would almost certainly have to end up going into care because they would not be able to look after themselves," he said.

THe association stages twice weekly trips to Morrisons in Bognor Regis town centre as well as fortnightly journeys to Lidl and Matalan out of town.

THere are also monthly outings to M&S Simply Food in Chichester as well as transport to its own coffee mornings and other social events.

"We transport about 2,500 people a year," said Mr Balch. "But we also let seven other local charitable organisations use our minibus as well.

"THey include Pagham Luncheon Club and Pagham Association for the Elderly and that adds another 1,500 passengers."

THe Peugeot vehicle has been partly funded by a £4,500 legacy from a grateful former passenger.

"She specifically left the money for a minibus because she enjoyed our trips so much - not just to go shopping but also because of the social aspect," Mr Balch added.

Lennie runs for a month for charity f A view of the cycle lane at Comet Corner

Cyclists face a delay for route CYCLISTS around Bognor Regis will have to use the busy A259 for longer.

Work on the combined cycling and walking path between Flansham and Climping of some 5km has been delayed.

It was due to have been underway by Easter.

But tenders are still being considered

by West Sussex County Council from potential contractors to push back any completion date by several months.

THe news has been greeted with dismay by Geoff Farrell, who chairs the West Sussex Cycle Forum.

He said: "THe cycle path is muchneeded by those who currently risk life and limb by cycling the route along

the A259.

"It will encourage more people to cycle between Bognor and Littlehampton and will be part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network 2 long distance route that runs between Dover and St Austell."

THe £1.4m scheme on the road's north side was due to have begun to take shape three months ago for a July finish. But the hold-up means the link will not be ready for this summer.

Mr Farrell was told by a highways and transport officer with West Sussex County Council: "We are still evaluating the tenders submitted by the contractor and my hope is that we can start in the summer."

KIND-HEARTED Lennie McCormack is running every day around Bognor Regis this month for charity.

Lennie, aged seven, is completing 2km a time to raise money to buy toys and equipment for the children and staff on the children's ward at St Richard's Hospital.

He wanted to give something back to Howard Ward after he had spent some time as a patient there.

He said: "It's fun, it's definitely fun and I really like going to new places to run different routes."

"Sometimes it's hard but it's still really fun because I love running" "When I was in hospital, I thought it would be a good idea to get the children some toys. THey have got lots but they still need more. THe nurses were really nice to me when I was poorly and the doctors were really funny."

Lennie has always had a love for running and enjoys attending the weekly junior parkrun which began in Bognor Regis earlier this year.

He recently completed his 11th of the weekly events and earned his half marathon certificate. THis activity inspired him to organise his daily runs to raise funds. A keen mathematician, he worked out he will have completed a total of 38.5 miles by the end of the month.

My last white selection was that of a 2015 François Martenot Les Trois Pierres Chablis from the Beaune area in Burgundy.

At circa £7.45, this Chablis has good structure and liveliness on the palate and has a hint of spice about it – worth a punt at this price!

My price-buster red of the week is the Côtes Du Rhône Villages Signargues 2015 at an appetising three measly pounds and

has notes of forest fruits and sweet spices as well as good structure - a steal at this price!

THis wine is very drinkable, but would also complement a dish like Boeuf Bourguignon in the sauce, for Rhône wines fit the bill in this regard. For a mere £6 the 2015 Tesco finest Médoc is full bodied and exudes blackberries and blackcurrants with a savoury finish and is worth a go at this price. Similarly, the Tesco finest

Faugères 2015 is a most welcome addition to their range and , for a reduced price of £6, exudes black fruit and subtle spice and is a powerful red to match to beef dishes and game stews.

At £12 the 2011 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Château Du Val D'Or which, ideally could age a little longer, has a good nose and is dry and earthy with a complex concentration of intense blackberry and blackcurrant flavours culminating in notes

of cedar and spice and one to savour!

For just £15 the Tesco finest Margaux De Boyd 2012 Margaux would also benefit from further ageing, but remains a prestigious wine, big on flavour ,with black fruit, cherries, spice to the fore with a hint of liquorice and a wine to purchase for special occasions!

Spinach, pea and mozzarella open lasagne

difficulty: easy total time: 20 mins serves: 4

Method

INGREDIENTS For the pesto: • 100g peas, thawed if frozen • 50g blanched hazelnuts • 8tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 30g Parmesan, finely grated • 50g mint leaves a good squeeze of lemon juice For the ravioli • 450g spinach, washed • 8 fresh lasagne sheets • 150g peas, thawed if frozen • ½tbsp olive oil • 16 balls bocconcini (mini mozzarella) • double cream • Parmesan shavings or grated Parmesan, to serve

For the pesto: rinse the peas under cold water to defrost fully. In a food processor, blend the peas with the remaining ingredients and 2tbsp water until smooth. Season well, cover and set aside in the fridge until needed.

When you’re ready to serve, have 2 large pans of boiling salted water on the go. In one, put the spinach followed by the peas a few minutes later. Cook for 1 minute then drain them all into a bowl. In the other pan, cook the pasta sheets in batches (otherwise they stick together), for 3 minutes per batch, or until al dente, and remove with a slotted spoon on to an oiled tray.

To assemble, put a folded pasta sheet on each plate, some dollops of pesto, some spinach and peas, then top with another sheet, tear the mozzarella between them, and add the remaining veg, plus parmesan, a good drizzle of olive oil and freshly ground black pepper. Garnish with pea shoots and pine nuts.

Life's a beach for feeling fit and healthy I AM FEELING very lucky right now. Having spent Easter in Fuerteventura, I feel on top of the world.

THe sun changes everything. Your skin feels better, hair seems to naturally fold into tight little even beachy curls and your sleep becomes amazing. But is it just because you are away from the stresses of normal everyday life, or is there something in the air that makes you feel this way when you are in hotter climes?

We came here to surf. Being the windiest of the islands, it’s known for its kite surfing and water sports. But it has been relatively calm and not much wind during most of our stay.

So paddle boarding seems to have been our favourite sport of choice. THe beaches here are gorgeous, long white sandy beaches stretching for miles with clear blue water. Beaches generally are some of the greatest and most enjoyable natural features this earth has to offer. Many people pay exorbitant amounts of money to live near a beach.

When booking holidays, millions of us flock to sunny beach-side locations and, when retirement age, hits it’s off to warm coastal areas people go! So why exactly is this? Why do we, as humans, naturally gravitate towards the beach?

While we may not consciously be able to pinpoint the exact reasons why we feel so happy and relaxed after a day at the beach, it truly does have many positive effects on a person both physically and psychologically.

THe number one benefit for hitting the beach is stress relief. As soon as you arrive and step out into

just a few hours at the beach one of the greatest benefits a person will experience is a truly wonderful night’s sleep later. For insomnia sufferers looking for a natural remedy, the beach is a definite recommendation.

It’s because the beach helps relieve three key factors that inhibit sleep: high stress and anxiety levels, lack of physical fatigue, and hormonal imbalances. Not only do you feel immediately relaxed upon setting foot on the beach, but you get a great exercise even from just walking on the beach. Additionally, the sun and lowered stress levels immediately help regulate a person’s hormones – making it far easier later that night to get a peaceful and deep sleep.

Of course we cannot forget about the Vitamin D benefits! One of the most essential vitamins in our diets is vitamin D. However, very little of it is actually absorbed through the consumption of foods. Spending just ten minutes outside in the sun can actually allow a person to absorb their daily dose of vitamin D directly through their skin!

THe beach can also improve your ability to fight off infections. You may have experienced it previously – that painful sting when an open wound is exposed to salt water. Fortunately, that pain is a sign that your wound is actually being cleansed by the water.

Salt water has unique antibacterial and anti-fungal properties making it excellent for external infections.

Exercise is key to our everyday lives. So, even simply walking on sand is actually quite difficult and utilizes more muscles than walking on normal pavement does - even more so if you take off your shoes and walk with

I think its safe to say that asthma sufferers all over the world feel better when at the beach. THe natural inclination to inhale deeply when you first step on the beach is actually an automatic response to the quality of the air.

Community News & Views INDEPENDENT authors in a Chichester-based group are expanding its reach with a massive book giveaway.

CHINDI members, pictured below, want the big-hearted gesture to enable it to reach even more readers and provide a greater network of support for new and existing authors.

Children's author Christopher Joyce explains: "THe group has been running now for three years and we have built quite a reputation for supporting authors who want to self-publish.

"We have had numerous requests from writers wishing to join the group from outside the Chichester area. So, we have rebranded CHINDI as Celebrating and Helping Indie authors.

"THe book giveaway reflects the range of non-fiction and novels created by the group."

A total of 50 books, worth more than £300, will be handed out to celebrate the relaunch. THey include kids' books, romance novels, thrillers and even books about how to get children to sleep.

All the books will carry a CHINDI sticker to ask readers to leave it for another reader once the finder has finished reading it.

Typical locations where the books could be left include cafes, parks and even bus shelters.

Photographs of the sites will be posted on the group's Facebook page, Facebook/chindiauthors, and Twitter account @ChindiAuthors.

Dear Sir A FEW points about the proposed building of more homes in this area than we have been told: 1 - I have learnt that the terribly rich people from overseas buy up newly built properties all over England as an investment.

Who are the proposed homes for? An honest answer is required; 2 - Arun District Council and the builders have let us down badly. Go back in time. Did they not know that many years ago the sea went as far as Goodwood?

3 - THere are submerged whole villages in the Pagham/Bognor Regis area; 4 - THe sea will always reclaim and Pagham sea defences are failing; 5 - It is a mortal sin to even contemplate taking Pagham's remaining agricultural land; 6 - Arun District Council must not go against wildlife

A SHOWCASE of more than 100 dancers highlighted the skills some had learnt through the Bognor Regis Timebank.

THe performers came from the Number 73 class led by dance teacher Suzanne Hill.

She has given up hours to the timebank to support dementia awareness, performing various dance routines in and around Bognor Regis with members of the Aldingbourne Trust's drop in at Number 73.

She has also attended the Access Music Disco held at THe Waverley in Bognor Regis to teach dance routines.

THe showcase performance she held celebrated the 20th anniversary of her Suzanne Hill School of Dance as well as marking the timebank's first year.

She said her weekly dance class at Number 73, which goes back two years, for adults with learning disabilities was a mix of fun and exercise.

"Everyone works at their own pace and I am delighted to see everyone achieving more than they thought possible," she said.

Among those who take part is Claire Needs, pictured below.

THe classes have enabled her to do more than she thought possible because of her cerebral palsy.

She said: "I had problems with extending my right arm and had limited movement in my shoulders and wrists.

"After seven months of dance exercise, I have now got full extension of my right arm which means I can throw a ball in a straight line when playing catch.

"My right wrist now goes completely flat without going into spasms and my weaker right arm can now support my left hand with doing tasks like holding the cup.

"Last week, I was able to rinse my own hair off in the shower because of being able to reach right round my head."

Suzanne has encouraged members from Number 73, in Aldwick Road, to take part in dance shows.

Last year, this enabled Duncan Spandley's dream of singing live to an audience at WestFest with a dance troupe performing come true.

THis encouragement also led to the Number 73 dancers being among the large cast in the school of dancing's celebration event.

Suzanne added: Nerves were high during rehearsals but, on the day, everyone was amazing and all the hard work and time that I have been given has been so worthwhile."

Her contribution to the timebank is just one of the many ways in which people have been sharing their hours and talents with the group.

TALENTED young performers from the University of Chichester will perform at the next concert at Bognor Regis Music Club tomorrow under the direction of Dr Laura Ritchie, a teaching fellow at the university.

Plans for a Business Improvement District in Bognor Regis - A Personal View DEAR Town Centre Business Owners,

I am writing to you because I am concerned about the Proposed Business Improvement District (BID) for Bognor Regis, and I wish to share my concerns of why I believe a BID is not right for Bognor Regis.

I am a business owner in Bognor Regis, I live in Bognor Regis and most of my staff who work with me are from Bognor Regis.

THe principle of a BID is reasonable but in practice many BIDs have become secretive and unaccountable 'Local Quangos' consuming large sums of money on administration, wages and the transfer of services that we already pay for through our Council Tax and Business Rates.

My first concerns about the Proposed BID originated when I asked for some information of the set up costs and on-going running costs. THis information was just not forthcoming. If you ask a question and are denied an answer, a reasonable reaction is to ask why and what is there to hide? It made me want to ask more questions; the more questions that remained unanswered increased my concerns.

Councils are usually the BID proposer, the reason is simple - it is

just another way of raising money.

In Bognor Regis, the BID Proposer is Arun District Council.

In a BID, the Levy (a Tax which actually belongs to the Billing Authority - ADC) which should be paid by every business within the BID area is supposed to be 'ring fenced' for spending on additional services.

If that really is the case, why are the 'baseline services' provided by ADC negotiated after the BID Ballot? I suggest this is because the Levy will be replacing existing funding, which has happened in many other towns.

A BID will add further to our costs by duplication of facilities. THere is already a District Council with offices in Littlehampton, a Town Council with offices in Bognor Regis, and we could be getting another, a BID Office in Bognor Regis, as well. THis will bring yet further bureaucracy and lack of accountability.

In the proposed BID area, there are 538 Hereditaments (Business Ratable Properties) representing 444 orgainisation.THat means there are 94 votes somewhere that ADC and Bognor Regis Town Centre Management seems very reluctant to fully divulge to me. Why would this information need to be withheld?

It has been repeatedly claimed that each business has only one vote. If that is true why does ADC have six votes? (four car parks will

be voting, one council office and the Tourist Information Office will also be voting). I have also been told that 24 votes will be cast by three management companies which appear to have little connection with Bognor Regis. So where are the other 64 votes?

It been has repeatedly claimed that the process is clear and transparent, and that the Proposed BID can stand up to public scrutiny. If that was really true, why have I had to resort to Freedom of Information Requests? THat is not the result of openness, transparency, nor indicates confidence in Public Scrutiny. I have quoted to ADC the exact section of the legislation that requires the council to make available to me the information that I have requested. THe response has been to quote back irrelevant legislation. THis indicates to me a clear willingness by ADC to prevent divulging information in relation to the BID. Why? THe Draft Business Plan - claimed to have 'been worked on for months' but actually copied from Worthing - does not list as separate items staffing, office, administration and management costs. THese have been 'hidden' within other expenditure.

So why is it that Bognor Regis Town Centre Management are so reluctant to publish these figures?

I understand that the BID area is now being enlarged and extended, this apears to be a common feature of a BID - moving the goal posts.

Does this suggest that it has been rather cobbled together without proper planning?

Bognor Regis deserves better and can have better than a BID. Arun District Council should provide to Bognor Regis the services that we already pay for. I will be voting NO to the BID which I believe is the right vote for Bognor Regis.

Simple comments show house buying changes

Mortgages were limited to half of a property's value and had to repaid within five years SEVERAL years ago when looking on the internet to see if there was anything for sale on eBay relative to Bognor Regis, I was intrigued to see that there was a five-bedroomed house available. At one point there were 43 bids, but it never reached its reserve. THere was also a bathing hut on Felpham seafront up for sale.

In recent years people appear to have assumed that they should be able to live in a house of their own, as a matter of right; but purchasing is becoming more difficult for many, due to spiralling house prices.

THerefore, I thought this week we should take a look at the subject of living accommodation and the methods by which it is obtained.

In a July 1880, copy of the Bognor Observer & Visitors List there are a number of advertisements for houses and estates to be let or sold.

Some examples are ‘a gentleman’s house, beautifully furnished, containing 3 reception rooms, and 6 beds, with nice small pleasure garden”. Another example is for Belle Vue Cottage, near the pier. “Drawing, Dining and 4 bedrooms, 5 beds". Compare this simple type of information with the details which are required by today’s prospective purchaser.

During the 1970s, when I moved into a house in Gainsboro Road, Bognor Regis, there was an elderly lady who was renting her home. Her father had rented the house in 1904, when it was built, the rental passed to the wife on his death, and then to the

daughter on the wife’s death. THis family ultimately rented this house for over 80 years, not an unknown scenario in the early part of the 20th century.

In Ockley Road early council houses were built around 1906, which is quite interesting as there were only six produced at that time, in a central area of the town.

THese houses were not to be joined by further houses for a number of years. It wasn’t until 1912 that more council houses were produced in Gravits Lane, some of which have now been purchased, thus reducing the number of houses available to rent.

Around this period homes were built specifically for workmen in Sheepwash Lane (Hawthorn Road). THe population in the town at this time was estimated at 8,150.

Looking through the 1916 Bognor directory I have found that P Stubbs, the grocer at the Victoria Park Post Office, was also a house agent, but his advertisement contained no other information.

Reynolds & Co, by then, were occupying 27 & 29 High St as they still do today, and were also estate agents, besides being auctioneers.

Sydney Hodges who occupied 5 London Road, was a ‘Valuer, House & Estate Agent,’ and held a register of furnished and unfurnished houses to let. Also

by ‘private treaty’. H.A. Mace, situated in London Road, were able to ‘completely and tastefully furnish cottages from £50,’ as part of their services. Another advertisement for Dawson Siddal, of Station Road, provides more information on their services.

THus it would appear that many of these people were actually auctioneers in addition to their estate agent services.

During the 1920s, the Housing Act was introduced which provided grant subsidies for local builders. THe act became law in August 1924 and the aim was to forge partnerships with interested parties like councils and builders.

THe plan was to build 190,000 new council houses nationwide. THe figure increased until in 1934 it topped 450,000. In fact, by the late 1930s, over 300,000 houses were being built annually across the British Isles as part of the four million-plus homes constructed between the First and Second World Wars.A three-bedroomed house had a sale price of around £750.

During the early part of the 20th century newly married couples would have a room in their parents' home and single people rarely bought a property. Interestingly, since 1901, there have apparently been more births than deaths thus providing increasing population numbers. Mortgages seemed to be the domain of the married couple. I thought therefore I would have a look at mortgages and found that it was not until the 1930s that they were available. Insurance Companies emerged as the lender initially; their aim was to increase their ownership of properties. Around this time only four in ten people owned their own home, but the mortgage was limited to only 50 per cent of the property price and restricted to a three to five year repayment period, finishing with a major payment. Very different to the services today.

Around this time of course there was an explosion of people wanting homes of all sizes and here in Bognor there was the development in 1934 of “THe Sussex Rivera – Aldwick Bay Estate,” where only detailed houses of character were permitted. THese homes cost from £850 to £3000 freehold.

Around the same time G.A. Neal was building the Newtown Estate and providing houses for £615 with a deposit of £25 and repayments of 13s. 6d. per week, or they were also available to rent.

THe people purchasing or requiring property cover a wide age group, thus various types of accommodation are required. Young people, especially students, are looking for bedsits and small accommodation. At one time, grandparents lived in the same street as their family. THis age group can now find more suitable accommodation can be available within a ‘retirement complex'.

Another situation with the increasing population is that the over-65s account for 16 per cent of the total and it is anticipated that this will increase to 23 per cent by 2031.

For many in this age group, there is also the opportunity to enjoy company, now that their family have grown up, moved away and some might have moved to another part of the world.

In the 1980s one of our local estate agents Martin & Dixon advertised that they were using new technology - the video. Sellers could include, for a nominal fee, registration on their ‘Video Register’. It was believed that this new method of advertising would produce a ‘life long pictorial record'. Other benefits meant there was no ‘unnecessary viewing’ and sellers were able to highlight specific facilities and the potential purchaser would be able to view and review from their own home.

Now in the 21st century we are enticed to purchase accommodation through a variety of methods.

Chi's young sharpshooters are on PostSport target to seal Sussex silverware

CHICHESTER'S young shooters have success in their sights after overcoming much more experienced competitors to lift the Sussexwide Loder Trophy at Oaklands Park.

THe competition formed part of the finals of the Sussex County Smallbore Rifle Association which took place at Chichester last weekend.

THe Loder Trophy is a handicap competition between teams of five competitors from each club.

THis means the score achieved in the competition is compared with each shooter’s average score so that those shooting the best relative to their average will win.

Chichester’s wily club coach Hamish Matheson selected five junior competitors for his team back in September and they hadn’t disappointed, getting to the final of this knockout competition, whereas Uckfield, their opponents were seasoned riflemen with higher averages.

Could the young riflemen hold their nerve?

THe answer was yes, led by top scoring James Voss 94, Nathan Tyrwhitt 93, Alex French 91, Jack Stallard 86 and Ollie Howlett 85, the Chichester team beat a very strong Uckfield team

THat was despite Robin Brown’s valiant 100.

THere was double success for Chi as theclub also took home the Veterans Team KO. With each team consisting of three competitors shooting one ten shot card each.

Centaur’s Linda Smallbone gave her team a great start with a highest possible score of 100.

However, the team could only score 281 ex 300, whilst Chichester scored 289 ex 300 to give them a comprehensive victory with Hamish Matheson scoring 96 and Jan Whittle 95.

In a packed day of action, Chichester’s Rob Dowling finished in second place behind Southwick’s Adam Cornbill in the Sussex short range competition.

Chi's Alex French also performed admirably, winning bronze in the under 18 competition, behind Charles White of East Grinstead and Reece Lelliot of Aldingbourne.

THe Veterans Championship was another hotly contested competition with some seasoned finalists.

But Linda Smallbone of Centaur had a perfect second card, hitting ten bulls in a row to give her the title ahead of East Grinstead's Malcolm Brown.

CHICHESTER RFC will hope to end the season on a high - even if it does end in relegation.

THe Blues have been consistently inconsistent all year.

With just one game to go in the National League THree (London and South East), Chi are sitting in the drop zone, three points from safety.

THe Blues must beat third-place Westcombe Park at home tomorrow (3pm) to have any chance of staying up.

Even then, only an extremely unlikely failure

by Sutton and Epsom to beat bottom-side Amersham and Chiltern in their last match could save the Blues.

Rob Lawrence's side only have themselves to blame for being in this position.

At the start of this month, Chi still could have dragged themselves up to a mid-table spot.

But successive defeats to struggling Guildford and already relegated Colchester last time out has left the Blues teetering on the brink.

THose who turn out at Oaklands Park

tomorrow will be hoping to at least end the season on a high, even if it does result in a drop down a division.

It will be a tough game for the Blues, with the return fixture back at the start of the season seeing them lose out by a single point in an 1817 defeat.

Such a result this time - while it will lift the mood around the club - will do little to help the Blues fight against the drop.

For that reason, club officials are urging people to turn out and cheer the club on to what would be a great escape.

Tomorrow is set to be a busy day for all those at Oaklands Park as it will also see the club host the Sussex Plate & Bowl Finals.

At midday,the Sussex Bowl between Hastings & Bexhill Seconds and Brighton THirds will take place. THen at 2.15pm, it will be the Sussex Plate, with Midhurst taking on East Grinstead.

With a busy day planned, those heading to the ground by car are being urged to use the Northgate car park.

Pagham look to experience and youth with new managers

PAGHAM'S new management team look set to look to the future to fire the Lions to success.

Less than a week after boss Mark Bennett announced he would be stepping away from Nyetimber Lane at the end of the season, the board have announced his replacement.

THose looking for consistency will be happy - with Bennett's long-term assistant Richie Hellen, pictured left, taking on the main job.

He will be joined by Tom Simmonds, top right, who has won five trophies in three years as head coach of Pagham's under 21s, as joint manager. Will Searle, bottom right, will also step up from the youth set up to be first team coach.

Chairman Tony Shea said: "We feel that, with Richie's experience, coupled with Tom and Will's proven success with both under18s and under-21s teams means that the club as a whole will continue to move forward to achieve its ambitions."

Bennett's last game will be the cup final against leaders Haywards Heath Town on May 1 at THe Beacon in Hassocks. A coach will be running to the match from Pagham.

Falcon rookies soar in finals Lions inflict derby defeat on Chi Ne

CHICHESTER Falcons are proving that experience counts for nothing in softball, winning a trophy with a team packed full of rookies.

Played with a bigger all than baseball, softball is proving to be a popular mixed sex sport for people of all ages.

Following on from a hugely successful rookie night at Oaklands Park last month, Chichester Falcons Softball Club took an inexperienced team to Eastleigh's Rookieball tournament, half of whom had not seen a softball until a fortnight ago.

Nonetheless, they brought home the Falcons' first silverware of the year, beating the UPSU Shafters in the Plate final.

In the group games, the rookies crucially overcame High Voltage 12-8, thanks to triples from pitcher James Porter and first baseman Shannon McCarthy, to earn a place in the Plate semi-final against the Southampton Spitfires.

After a cagey first innings, the Falcons stepped up a gear.

Keaton Irvine notched up her fifth straight base hit to help

create a seven run lead, before the Spitfires recovered to 1413 in the final innings, but now with two outs.

Outfielder Mike Moore snagged a prospective fly ball to kill the game and give Chichester the win.

THe Plate final, against UPSU Shafters, was a game of attrition, with all the pressure on the pitchers.

At 10-8 to the Falcons things were looking tight, but a disciplined infield of Olly Howley, Emma Brown and Miguel Rosa kept the Shafters at bay.

Chichester pulled ahead, thanks to Anne Rutherford hitting her third from three, while junior Molly Rayner displayed great base-running.

THe clock eventually ran down with the Falcons ahead at 2112 and the score was reverted to the last innings, Chichester winning it 13-9.

CHICHESTER City may be flying high but it was local rivals Pagham who secured local bragging rights after a 3-1 Easter Monday derby day win.

At the start of the campaign, many predicted the Lions of Nyetimber Road as the side to make a SCFL Premier promotion challenge.

Chi on the other hand were more likely to be mid-table fodder.

But manager Miles Rutherford has marshalled his side into a tough side to beat - and before last weekend had lost just three times in the league all season.

THat form had propelled them to third and on the edge of an unlikely title challenge.

Pagham on the other hand had faltered and were 15 points adrift in fourth spot.

But it was the Lions who stole the show, sealing a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Callum Overton, George Cody and Daryl Wollers.

Josh Clack scored Chi's consolation.

It was a good couple of days for Pagham, who just two days earlier had beaten Broadbridge Heath 4-1 away, thanks to an Overton hattrick and Matthew Ryan strike.

Next up is a trip to second-placed Shoreham

tomorrow (3pm), who will be looking to close the one point gap on league leaders Haywards Heath.

Chi on the other hand had a bad Easter - with the defeat at Nyetimber coming off the back of a 4-1 home loss to Loxwood on Saturday.

THose two defeats have all but ended the Lillywhites' slim title hopes.

But Rutherford will be wanting his side to build momentum ahead of a promotion push next season, starting at home to Lancing tomorrow (3pm).

In SCFL Division One, Selsey continued their unpredicatable ways.

Saturday saw Steve Bailey's side lose on the road at relegation-threatened Ringmer, Joe Manners giving the Blues the lead before four unanswered goals inflicted an unlikely 4-1 defeat on Selsey.

THen on Monday, the Blues put in a fine display to hold already promoted East Preston to a 1-1 draw, Joe Clarke getting the goal.

With Bailey's side still holding on to seventh spot, a top half finish is all but secured.

But they will want to end their season on a high, with the last match coming tomorrow on the road at Seaford Town (3pm.

Selsey won the return fixture 2-0 back in December with Clarke and Morgan Forry scoring the goals.

Sids seal third spot as Bosham win the title SIDLESHAM rounded off a solid season by sealing third spot after a battling draw with local rivals Bosham.

For much of the season, the tie at Walton Lane on Easter Monday looked set to be a SCFL Division Two title decider.

But the Sids have stuttered of late - allowing the Robins to wrap up the championship before last weekend's local derby.

THat meant that Daren Pearce's side gave Bosham a guard of honour as they made their way on to the pitch. It was perhaps as exciting as it got, as both sides played out a goalless draw in front of a bumper crowd.

It was then on to the trophy presentation, with Andy Probee's side lifting the silverware in front of a home crowd.

Bosham will finish the season on the road tomorrow, as they play Cowfold (3pm).

For Sidlesham though, the season is over with the green and golds securing a third place finish.

THat may be a disappointment for some at the Rec Ground as the Sids were matching Bosham every step of the way until midMarch. But a run of one win in five saw Pearce's side slip up and even overtaken by the in-form Jarvis Brook.

With no game this weekend, the Sids will now turn their attention on the Division Two cup final next Tuesday which will see the grren and golds pitched against Westfield at Middle Road in Shoreham (7.45pm).

Westfield currently sit sixth but the Sids have beaten the team from near Hastings twice already in the league this season.

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell is urging his side to take care of business - despite a defeat at title rivals Havant & Waterlooville leaving his side agonisingly short in the championship run-in.

Hundreds of Rocks fans made the short trip across the Hampshire border on Easter Monday knowing that a win for Howell's side would seal the Ryman Premier title and promotion to the Conference South.

But in a rare blip, Bognor suffered a 1-0 reverse, leaving them two points behind Havant with just one game to go.

THat means the Rocks must beat the Met Police at home on tomorrow (3pm) and hope that rivals slip up as they travel to Kingstonian.

Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "We will be fully prepared to get a win and I will pick the best team that I have available to do so.

"If we win then we will see what happens elsewhere. If it is meant to happen then it will happen.

"We just have to get ready for Met Police, take care of our things at our end and if they [Havant] slip up then we can catch up. If not then we go for the playoffs."

Rocks fans will recognise the pragmatic response from their manager who has worked wonders with a squad built with very little funds. But even after a remarkable run this season, even Howell could not hide his frustration at the way his side performed

in front of an Easter Monday league record crowd of more than 3,400 fans.

In a match where Bognor had just one shot, former Rocks loanee Wes Fogden scored the only goal of the game.

Howell said: "I'm still at a loss to explain what happened. I think we have to give credit to the opponents, maybe their experience helped on the day.

"But we just didn't play and had too many people off the game on the day and didn't meet up to levels on the day.

"THere's no lying - it was a massive disappointment for us and the club. It's something like 37 years since we were going for this title and the crowd needed something to shout about. But we didn't have anything and it turned into damp squib.

"THe support we had was phenomenal. It was unbelievable to see so many people as we had in the ground cheering us on and we just didn’t turn up.

"I don't think it was a lack of effort. THey all worked very hard but we just had one shot at goal."

Monday's result was a long way from Easter Saturday when the Rocks sealed a 3-0 win against a very physical Harlow side. A Gary Charman header and two James Fraser penalties sealed the win against the visitors, who were reduced to nine men. Now all focus is on Met Police and, maybe, lady luck.

Rocks' rocky road to promotion SUPPORTING the Rocks is never an easy occupation.

And the loss on Easter Monday to Havant means that the next week or so will be full of uncertainty for everyone at Nyewood Lane.

After leading the way for much of 2017, Bognor find themselves sitting in second two points behind their local rivals.

Ahead of tomorrow's final match of the regular season, the Rocks know they must win at home to Met Police to have any chance of lifting the title.

But that will rely on big-spending Havant to drop points on their travels at Kingstonian.

THe odds will be against that happening, with the Surrey side in the bottom half.

THis means that a more likely route for the Rocks to get promoted is the playoffs.

While history has not been too kind to Jamie Howell's side in the past, this year they would go into the mix as by far the best team based on league form and with home advantage.

Likely opponents for the semi-final, which will take place on THursday, could be Wingate & Finchley. However, Leiston or Enfield could yet fill the fifth spot in the league. THen the final on Bank Holiday Monday could pitch the Rocks against Dulwich or Enfield Town.

SO IT has come down to the last game of the season against Metropolitan Police tomorrow at Nyewood Lane after our 1-0 loss to Havant this past Easter Monday.

I have to say the attendance was amazing at West Leigh Park and I felt Bognor largely outnumbered and outsung the home support. Only once Wes Fogden (ex-Rock) had given Havant the lead did they really get singing.

But to be honest Havant were, in my opinion, clear favourites here. THey had a day of extra rest, they had a chance to scout us just two days before the local clash and they were playing at home.

We never seemed to get going in this game which reminded me much of the fixture away to Enfield Town when nothing seemed to work.

But this is football and I wouldn’t have it any other way supporting BRTFC. Sure, winning the league at Havant would have been awesome, but when you look at the overall picture of how the team has done this year, against all the odds and against all of the nay-sayers, they have proved a lot of people wrong.

THe Rocks have performed far and beyond what anyone expected - myself included. If you were to say we were going to fight for the championship back in July 2016 I wouldn’t have believed you.

After the tough Enfield loss away at the beginning of April, it was home next to AFC Sudbury. Jimmy Muitt played really well and got a hat-trick and Darren Budd had a sublime game, finishing off Sudbury with a fine strike.

I enjoyed the trip to Suffolk - plus the facilities really impressed me. 3G pitches seem to be a growing theme at this level of the game.

THis pitch certainly was an improvement on Enfield’s version of a ploughed field.

THen back at home to take on the in-form Harlow team who were certainly physical in their tactics and paid for it with two sending offs.

I thought the referee controlled the game really well

and after a fine Gary Charman header and two James Fraser penalties we had the game won. Unfortunately Charman and Sami El-Abd would have to pay with quite nasty and unnecessary injuries inflicted by the Harlow players, meaning Charman is doubtful for the rest of the season and El-Abd is heavily bandaged up.

You cannot fault the team’s desire and their hard work this season. Whatever happens tomorrow against Met Police this has been another exciting season.

Sitting next to Ray on the coach on the way home to Littlehampton I was as quiet as a mouse - I am a sore loser after all. I was gutted when that goal went in at Havant when a draw would have been a fantastic result.

I said to Mark at the game when the goal went in, “Here we go again - play-offs”. But as we came home Ray and Dave reminded us all that if we win tomorrow and Havant lose or draw, we still win the championship.

I will therefore be a Kingstonian fan as well as a Rocks supporter tomorrow.

UP THE K’s! Never thought I’d say that but that’s what we need to happen.

At least if we finish in the play-offs we will be at home for both games. I know that’s not really a consolation but its something. We need to remain positive.

I have to give a big shout-out to all of the Bognor fans at the game on Monday who helped to set a new league record attendance of 3,455, which led to the game being delayed to allow so many people in!

I was there 15 minutes after the game and it was like being at Grimsby all over again as the singing continued. And that included no musical instruments of any kind, save for some passionate vocal chords.

I hope to see you all at the Lane tomorrow for our last game (we hope) of the season tomorrow. Keep the faith as they say! We can still dare to dream!
