Anger about complaint delay ANGRY residents want action into their complaint about being labelled a rabble in a Bognor Regis planning row.

THe Aldwick Neighbourhood Action Group members say they have been waiting too long to have their grievance investigated by Arun District Council.

Deborah Martin, a founder of the group, said it had been seven months since they submitted a formal complaint about the conduct of Arun's development control

committee chairman, Cllr Jacqueline Maconachie, when the plans by Butlin's to use the former Ashley House for staff accommodation were agreed.

"THis is totally unacceptable. Why have we had to wait that long? And still have no firm indication of when our case will be reviewed.

"Our council clearly has very little respect for its public's views and grievances.

"THere's no way this kind of attitude and lack of action would be tolerated in the private sector."

Fellow group member Ray Todd said: "We have been very disappointed by the reaction from the council. We feel that they are just trying to hide the matter under a stone. THey are trying to wish it would go away."

An spokesman said on Tuesday it did not want to add any details to the last

contact the group received from the council came from Sue Dudley, its legal services administrator, on March 2.

She wrote: "THe council treats complaints against councillors allegedly breaching the members' code of conduct very seriously.

Charity cook night success FOOD writer Rosemary Moon cooked up a fundraising delight in Bognor Regis.

Rosemary, pictured above, held a cookery demonstration in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church to help the millions who face starvation in East Africa.

THe church's parish hall was transformed into a kitchen filled with delectable delights as she raised £150 for CAFOD's East Africa appeal. With the help of sous chef, assistant priest Father David King, Rosemary cooked a variety of dishes.

THey included onion and chilli tabbouleh, butternut noodles with salmon and coconut and a citrus winter fruit salad.

Guests could sample the dishes, which were made using Fairtrade ingredients where possible.

Rosemary said: “I have a skill and if, by contributing the cost of the ingredients and using this skill, people come and have a great evening and the net result is hundreds of pounds for charity, then it’s a no brainer – why not?”

“People think, 'What possibly can my £1 or £5 do in East Africa?', but you have to dig in your pocket and know that for people out there, it will make a difference.

"As well as giving money, you have to think about what changes you can make at home to stop climate change, which has been a huge factor in causing the famine.

"By walking more, using Fairtrade products and so on, you can be sure as eggs are eggs it will make a difference.

It’s two-fold – you have to look at what changes you can make and give money.”

In East Africa, there are more than 16 million people in need of urgent food and other life-saving assistance.

CAFOD makes sure that aid reaches the families most in need, despite the challenges, through a network of trusted local organisations in South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya.

CAFOD’s representative for Bognor Regis, Martin Brown, said: “We would like to say a big thank-you to Rosemary for running the demonstration and for Fr David King and Our Lady of Sorrows for hosting the evening."

Try Rosemary's onion and chilli tabbouleh for six.

Ingredients: six spring onions, one red and one green chilli, one bunch watercress, 1/2 cucumber, 175g cracked wheat, one lemon and extra virgin olive oil.

Method: 1 Finely slice the spring onions.

Seed the chillies and chop them finely with the watercress (this can be done in a processor). Coarsely grate the cucumber, reserving the liquid.

2 - Wash the cracked wheat in a sieve then turn it into a pan and add 450ml boiling water. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, stir and add the cucumber water, then leave to stand for 10 minutes, covered.

3 - Turn the cracked wheat into a bowl and add the prepared vegetables. Grate the zest from the lemon into the salad, squeeze the juice and add that with some seasoning and leave for a few minutes.

Check the moisture and add a little olive oil. Season again and serve.

Consultation begins about changes to planning blueprint COMMENTS can be made about the latest planning blueprint agreed by Arun District Council.

THe council has opened the consultation period concerning the modifications its members have agreed in the latest version of its local plan document.

A council spokesman said: "Only representations on the main modifications received within this period will be considered by the planning inspector as part of the examination in public.

"Repetitions of any representations made at an earlier stage of consultation

will not be considered."

All the documents which relate to the local plan can be viewed online in the current consultations section of Arun's website: www.arun.gov.uk.

THey can also be seen at Bognor Regis Town Hall, Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton and libraries within the Arun district.

THe consultation opened on Monday and lasts until 5pm on May 30.

THe action group, pictured above, was formed last summer after Butlin's revealed its plans to use the empty care home of

Ashley House on Aldwick Road to rooms for staff such as chefs and Redcoats.

THe application went to Arun's development control committee last August 10. THe committee voted 7-6, with one abstention, to approve the proposal.

Some 30 or so opponents attended. A few of them shouted out when they left the meeting.

Cries of 'Oh no', 'THat's not democracy' and 'It was already decided' could be heard as the objectors nosily made their way out of the council chamber.

Cllr Maconachie briefly halted the meeting to allow the disturbance to end.

She accused the members of the public of being a rabble.

"Try to behave with a degree of courtesy as you would when you attend an official meeting," she said.

THis prompted further outcries from the final residents as they left the meeting.

Mrs Martin said: "We were all appalled

at the manner in which the chairman conducted procedures both during and after the case was debated, especially when we were referred to as 'the rabble' when we were leaving the chamber."

THe group spent a few weeks preparing a comprehensive formal complaint against Cllrs Mrs Maconachie. All the paperwork was submitted to Arun's legal section on September 13, said Mrs Martin.

THe group had since contacted the department five times by phone and in an email to find out information.

"Each such enquiry was met with a response along the lines of 'We have a backlog but your case is in hand and you'll hear from us as soon as the panel has reviewed the case'," said Mrs Martin.

Last February brought the news of the investigating officer's sickness followed by the March 2 email.

"Since that date we have heard absolutely nothing," said Mrs Martin.

TRAFFIC surveys in North Bersted will highlight the impact of another 6,000 vehicles a day on the area's roads.

THe counting is to be carried out by parish council volunteers in the next few weeks.

Cllr Brian Knight, the council's chairman, said they should be sited at the Babsham roundabout to survey the number of vehicles travelling to Chichester and on to the B2259 from 7.30-9am and in the opposite direction from 4.30-6pm on a Monday-Friday.

THis information would build on the facts compiled by the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement in its fight against 1,200 homes around Pagham, he said.

"THey have done quite a comprehensive traffic survey at the Royal Oak at Lagness counting traffic coming out of Pagham, coming along the Lower Bognor Road in the morning and coming out of Chichester into Pagham and turning into the Lower Bognor Road in the evening," said Cllr Knight.

"We can add our information to the Pagham report and add to that another 6,000 cars coming out of the new Chalcraft Lane development.

"We want to highlight the problems before we get the housing.

Vice-chairman Cllr David Lainchbury said: "THe locations for our survey are exactly right. All the counting needs to be done on the same day at the same time."

An open air meeting has also been agreed by parish councillors to bolster their opposition against the planned estate of 2,500 homes on farmland north of Chalcraft Lane.

THe outdoor event will take place on May 12 on the Jubilee Playing Fields off Chalcraft Lane to give as many residents as possible the chance to speak out about the plans.

Arun District Council has earmarked a large area of nearby farmland for one of its strategic housing developments it has officially called 'west of Bersted' in a revival of a decade-old scheme by the Church Commissioners.

THe parish councillors have been firmly opposed to the proposals.

the ante against all the people who are making money out of this.

"THe Church Commissioners have taken their money from Site Six (a housing development in North Bersted) and now they have come back for this, regardless of the consequences."

THe meeting will be held at 7pm on the Jubilee Playing Fields off Chalcraft Lane.

It will be followed the next day by an advice session in Jubilee Hall next the playing fields to give anyone interested the chance to write official letters of objection to Arun about its intended use of the land for housing.

THe session will take place from 10am-4pm in the meeting room of the hall.

Parish councillors also agreed to pay for leaflets to be distributed to thousands of homes in the PO21 postcode area to gather as much support for the meeting as possible.

"It makes huge sense for the people who live in West Meads to come along to the meeting," said Cllr Lury. "I would have no problem with allowing people from Pagham and Aldwick to speak at the meeting.

"What is happening with plans at Pagham, Aldwick and Bersted, and even what happens in Chichester, is relevant to the people who live here.

THe Chichester development could start only one-and-a-half miles away.

"If having more leaflets distributed doubles the cost, we have got to do it.

We have to find the money."

It said an indication of the potential problems which could be caused by a large number of new homes was shown by the 50 minutes he spent on a bus in a mid-morning weekday journey to Chichester.

"If it takes that long now, how long will it take with all the extra traffic," he said.

Cllr Lainchbury said: "We can't go wrong by leafleting the entire subdistrict. We need as many people who are going to get on their feet and come to the meeting as possible."

Cllr Wendy Kapp said the cumulative effects of all the planned developments would have a serious impact on residents of the area.

` Search for town crier is underway POTENTIAL town criers are being sought to promote Bognor Regis.

THe successful individual will represent the town at public events in the area.

Bognor Regis Town Council would like to hear from anyone who wants to take on the enjoyable role.

Town council civic and office manager Jo Davis said: "Bringing a town crier back to the streets of Bognor Regis is an exciting project and, today, the town council launches its search for the perfect person for the honorary role of town crier."

"It is anticipated that the Bognor Regis Town Crier will make their first appearance at the town's carnival to be held on June 10, 2017, followed by a full programme of 'crying' proclamations from thereon in."

THe town council is working with Jane Smith, of Myrtles Bags, in the making of the town crier's uniform.

Anyone aged 18 or over is eligible to apply to become the town crier.

Application details can be found on the town council's website, www.bognorregis.gov.uk.

Hard copies can be collected from the council's offices in the town hall in Clarence Road.

All applications must be received by 5pm on May 5. Successful applications will be invited to an interview and then to take part in a 'cry off' - at which members of the public will be involved.

New lighting will shine on seafront

A NEW section of decorative lighting on Bognor Regis seafront is due to be switched on tomorrow.

THey will part of the expanded summer illuminations which will spring back into life to mark the 20th anniversary of the group which organises them.

THe lights are returning to Waterloo Square after a four year absence - thanks to funds provided by Sainsbury's to make the opening of its store on the outskirts of the town a few years ago.

THe developer agreed to make funds available for various town centre improvements. Volunteers at Bognor Regis Seafront Lights put forward the lighting of the historic square as a possible project.

THe scheme is costing some £7,000 and was approved by the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board in 2011. But the installation had to await the arrival of new street lighting columns and talks with Arun District Council's conservation officer.

Seafront Lights chairman Jason Passingham said: "Our initial plan was for a string either side but the new columns won't support strings.

"And both West Sussex County Council and Arun weren't that keen on additional supporting columns in between as they felt it would add more street clutter and detract from the conservation area, so the process has been somewhat prolonged.

"Nevertheless, the plain white low energy bulbs wrapped around each column should really complement the square and we can't wait to see them lit up. We didn't do anything new last year.

"So, it is great to be doing so once again in our 20th anniversary year."

THe new lights on 12 columns will come on about 9pm tomorrow along with all the other existing displays while fireworks burst into the sky from the pier as part of the big switch-on weekend.

Coles will be staging a funfair all weekend. It will be sited on the road, unlike previous years, to mean the closure of THe Esplanade from Clarence Road to Lennox Street from 6pm yesterday to early Tuesday morning.

Greg Burt, the Lights' secretary, said the operator was unwilling to take the risk of placing its attractions on the shingle after storm force gales forced the funfair to be pulled off the shingle early last year.

"While the fair looked great along the beach, due to the forever changing available width and stability of the stones, and the prospect of storm surges during strong winds, it is no longer safe or viable to put rides on the stones."

THe group, formed in 1997, receives funds from Bognor Regis and Felpham councils but nearly as much again is raised from fundraising events.

THese include jumble sales, a garden fete, donations and the illuminations gala on August bank holiday Sunday.

Greg said this year's gala would have one change from previous events.

"THis year, as the kite festival will be hosting a three day event in West Park, we will be marshalling the procession in Silverston Avenue instead of the park."

EVENING shifts helped to ensure plenty of donated supplies for the Bognor Regis Foodbank.

Volunteers staged their first stints from 4.30pm-7pm at a two-day collection event at Tesco in Shripney Road.

THe result was a resounding success.

THe opening day last THursday saw 13 trayfuls of food - or one every 12 minutes - handed over by shoppers.

THat equalled some 156kg of food given and was 50 per cent of the amount collected in the rest of the day.

Sue White, the Foodbank's joint coordinator, said she expected the pattern to be repeated on the second day.

Gridlock as motorists after tip's opening hours are cut

QUEUING motorists brought a Bognor Regis business site to a halt this week.

THe tailback of cars and vans was caused as residents sought to use the town's household waste amenity site.

THis week saw the first impact of the site's reduced opening hours coinciding with the school holiday and the start of the gardening season.

THe result was a constant queue at the Arun Business Park during Monday and one set to be in place on Tuesday as well.

Tony Sergeant, the owner of Sergeant's Bedrooms and Kitchens on the business park, said: "It took me 20 minutes to get into work on Monday. THe queue to enter the business park stretched back 100m, almost to Sainsbury's.

THis saw the tip closed on THursdays and Fridays and open at 10am, instead of 8am, on other days.

It closes at 7pm from April 1-September 30 and 5pm the rest of the year. THe initial result was lengthy queues at the site.

"THe council has cut the opening hours of the tip at the same time as the population of the area has doubled in the past 30 years.

THat's how daft the situation is," said Mr Sargeant.

"Arun Business Park should be regarded as a special case because the site is sited within the private area with limited access from a dual carriageway which is reduced to one lane at times as far back as the lights at Sainsbury's."

THe queue to use the amenity site had grown to 17 vehicles at midday on Tuesday - and almost on to the A29.

One of those waiting was Walberton resident Greg Vivash. He said: "I didn't expect the queue to be here. THat surprised me. THis situation is only going to get worse. I appreciate the council are trying to cut costs but my worry is that this is going to increase fly tipping."

A county council spokesman said: “All our sites are now operating under their summer schedule and are open until 7pm.

THis gives residents an extra six hours beyond regular office hours from Monday to Wednesday when the Bognor site is open, as well as 18 hours over the weekend.

“We are not intending any further review of the opening times or days of operation at our household waste recycling sites.”

Gladys reaches 105 DEEP breathing has helped a Bognor Regis resident reach 105.

Gladys Barnard is probably the town's oldest person and marked her latest milestone with three parties.

THe last took place at the Laburnum Centre on Monday where she has been a member for 20 years. Her friends quickly presented her with a range of greetings as well as a special cake.

Gladys said: "I still feel the same as I have always done. I do deep breathing exercises before I go to bed every night. THat has kept me free from blood pressure problems.

"I used to suffer from that but doing the exercises has stopped any return. I think that's helpful to me. I also live my life in moderation."

Gladys is the Lyon Street centre's oldest member and goes every week to its hairdressing salon and to enjoy lunch. She previously joined in its art and calligraphy groups as well as the centre's choir.

She still attends the calligraphy group's Christmas celebrations.

Gladys was called upon to open the centre's new shop with the town mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon.

Gary Hardley, the centre's manager, said: "We were looking to open the shop in March or April and we thought the best opportunity to do that was for Gladys to do it on our behalf for achieving such a good age."

Entertainment was provided by singer and guitarist Arthur Faithfull. He began his performance with Cliff Richard's The Young Ones.

"I'm a very sociable person. I love people," she said. "I used to be a hairdresser in Gillingham in the Second World War. It was friendly and chatty."

Diane Henderson, chief executive of Age UK West Sussex, which runs the centre, said:"It's an amazing age for Gladys. To be out and about shows such a good example to everybody else."

Gladys became 105 last Saturday. Her celebrations began with a party last Wednesday in Arran Gate where she lives off the High Street.

Sunday saw her joined at lunch by her daughter and son-in-law and three grandchildren.

` Waste site fees are suspended CHARGES imposed for DIY waste from householders have been suspended at the Bognor Regis waste site.

THe decision was made by West Sussex County Council on Tuesday based on a government statement.

It means the £4 fee brought in by the council last October for items such as soil, hardcore, DIY and plasterboard has been withdrawn.

Council chief executive Nathan Elvery said the decision had been made while a government review into the matter was carried out.

"In order to avoid any potential confusion for our residents in West Sussex, we have decided to suspend all charges for these types of materials with immediate effect until the review by the government has been concluded," he said on Tuesday.

Beach work scheme hope

by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk GAINING planning consent for a major coast defence scheme in Pagham is getting closer, a councillor has said.

Cllr Ray Radmall, the chairman of Pagham Parish Council, said he hoped the £750,000 project would finally be approved in the next few months.

THe parish council has asked for planning permission to cut a channel in the expanded Church Norton Spit to save potentially hundreds of homes from being flooded.

It has taken some 18 months for Arun District Council to make a decision. THe outcome has stalled over the amount the parish council will have to guarantee to make any repairs needed in the planned channels initial years.

But Cllr Radmall told a housing campaign rally in Pagham last Saturday he hoped the impasse had nearly ended.

"We believe, at last, we are very close to getting planning consent,"he said.

"We have the best consultants in the country looking at this with our community interest company in charge and the funds we can get through them.

"We hope within the next year to carry out the essential sea defence work to save up to 3,000 homes from being washed away. We are fighting on two fronts - to save these homes and to stop new homes from being built here."

As reported, the natural formation of the spit had forced the tides on to the beach around Pagham Yacht Club and the waves had scoured the protective

shingle. THis has created severe erosion and put some of the seafront bungalows at risk from the sea.

Cllr Radmall has previously said he feared that a breach of the beach by the yacht club could lead to flooding of the lower lying inland area as far away as THe Green.

Arun's engineering services manager, Roger Spencer, told the cabinet members of the district council on Monday a brief history of the situation and showed how the spit had formed in 15 years with a series of aerial photographs.

THe spit had continued to grow eastwards, which had caused the scour and erosion to spread in that direction as well.

THe beach around the yacht club had been subject to erosion from wave energy and the interruption of fresh supplies of shingle because of the spit's formation.

But the spit had been breached by the waves earlier this year to create a lagoon and lead to erosion elsewhere. THe spit had also connected with the beach.

"THis shows you how dynamic the situation is down there," he said. "THere's no way we could have exactly guessed what was going to happen.

"We had some idea and we had to respond to what happened on the day or the day after."

Cllr Terence Chapman, Arun's cabinet member for environmental services, said the latest events showed its adaptive management policy had been correct.

Figures given at the meeting showed Arun had spent £726,000 since 2009 on Pagham's beach.

HOMEMADE cakes created a tasty way to give a Rose Green school a revamped hall.

THe sweet treats, with a few shop bought packets, were sold in the latest of a series of fundraising events in aid of Rose Green Junior School to be staged by the area's Co-operative Funeralcare branch.

THe branch's co-ordinators, Shirley Heaton and Lindsey Booker, hoped to raise at least £100 from last Friday's event packed with tastebud tempters like coffee and chocolate, and lemon and coffee cakes outside the business in Nyetimber Lane, pictured left.

THis would take the amount they have brought in so far to more than £3,000 this year for their first charity partner.

Shirley said: "THe junior school is at the heart of the community. Everybody knows of it. THe school hall is used for a lot of community events but it's looking very tired and shabby. We hope to raise £12,000 by the end of this year for its

refurbishment."

THe hall forms part of the original school building, which dates from 1951, in Raleigh Road.

Shirley and Lindsey have so far held a quiz night and helped at a Valentine's disco among other events for the school.

THeir branch opened last June and its owner, Southern Co-operative, encourages all its branches to adopt a charity partner each year.

Laura Treagus, the school's PTA fundraising leader, said: "Shirley and Lindsey are invaluable to us. THe school hall work would not be done without them.

"Whether they are giving their time for an event, running a stall or even holding a black bag at the end of the night, they will do anything to help us."

Future events which Shirley and Lindsey have planned include a car wash for Father's Day and a stall at the PTA's summer fair.

B&B costs soar BED AND breakfast costs for homeless people continue to soar for Arun District Council.

An extra £80,000 allocated for the temporary accommodation is unlikely to be enough, councillors were told on Monday. Alan Peach, the council's group head of corporate support, said Arun had spent £313,000 on the service up to last February. THis was well above the increased budget of £248,000 with a month of the financial year left.

"I know the head of housing is looking at ways to address this rather than increasing the budget," Mr Peach said at Monday's cabinet meeting.

THe report about the reasons for the

extra spending and its implication for future years is due to be given at the next cabinet meeting.

Much of the additional cost was being met from underspending on various other services provided by the council, Mr Peach added.

Financial details given to the cabinet members showed Arun spent £220,000 on B&B rooms during 2015/16.

THat was expected to rise to £248,000 in the year which ended last month but the money had been spent weeks earlier to give a year-on-year increase of some 40 per cent.

THe number of those helped has risen from 190 to 209 families and individuals.

` Rubbish cleared up by council THIS is some of the rubbish left by travellers after they had vacated a Bognor Regis play area.

A small group of caravans camped on the Hampshire Avenue site earlier this month.

THey moved on last week and a Post reader photographed piles of the waste they left behind.

A spokesman for Arun District Council said the items were cleaned as soon as possible.

"Council officers and our contractors went to the recreation ground at Hampshire Avenue as soon as we were alerted to the issue.

"An operation immediately began to fully clear the site of all waste left by the unauthorised traveller occupation.

"THe council also acted swiftly to ensure the wooden post, which was displaced when the group illegally broke on to the site, was secured.

Any other damaged caused will be rectified as soon as possible.”

College greets French guests MORE than 50 French students brought language lessons alive for pupils at Felpham Community College.

THe visitors from Riom in central France spent a day in the college last week to experience English academic life.

THey were paired with Felpham students who have chosen French as a GCSE or A-level. As well as shadowing normal lessons, they took part in teambuilding activities which encouraged all students to use their language skills.

Felpham student Chelsea Song, of Year 9, said: "It was a great opportunity to practise my French and make some new friends. I really enjoyed the teambuilding activities as these made us speak in both languages as we had to work together."

THe French visitors went to the college during a week in south-east England.

Julie said: "It's a lovely office and the customers are really nice. THey have got used to me now and I'm not going to change anything in the shop.

"It's very important to have a post office here. A lot of elderly people in the area don't see anybody from one week to the next and coming here is a social event for them.

"You can hear them talking to each other in the queue - and we give them the service that they want so they don't have to go into town.

"It's an important resource to have this here. If someone wants me to stock a particular product, I will look to get it in if I think it will sell well."

THe recently-wed couple used this year's five-day Clowns' International celebration in the town to celebrate their marriage.

Silly Tilley, pictured right with Jarl, said the event's success proved it had been the right decision.

"We met at the clowns' festival in Bognor Regis, so where else would we spend our honeymoon? It's a special place in our hearts," she said. "It's wonderful to be back here. I have been here about ten times. I met Jarl about five or six years ago.

"He was a quiet Danish clown who I thought didn't speak much English at first.

But he had fallen in love and did not know how to talk to me about it."

THe Northern Ireland-based pair were among some 30 clowns who again gathered in Bognor Regis to continue a tradition that began in 1985.

THe highlight was a parade with stunts, tricks and jokes and a picnic, complete with circus workshops, in Hotham Park.

Town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon dressed as a clown for the occasion.

He said: "THis is a brilliant turnout of people. THe parade was really good. THere were loads of people along the way. THank you very much to the clowns for coming to our town and entertaining us again."

Several hundred people of all ages went along to enjoy the smiles in the sunshine last Sunday.

THere were hula-hoops, juggling classes, diabolos, stilt walking and the biggest bubbles in Bognor Regis to enjoy as well as a humour-packed farewell show at the park's bandstand.

THe comic capers continued for some two hours to provide plenty of chuckles.

Silly Tilley said Clowns' International hoped to build on the success of the two events in the park.

"We have already fixed a date to be back next year on April 25.

"We hope the event is going to be bigger next year. THat depends on how successful our funding applications are. We need the town council to get behind us. THe town mayor is certainly supportive."

Among the other clowns who returned to Bognor Regis was Mattie. He said: "I've been here more than ten times. I remember the days before it moved to Butlin's for seven years.

"THis is a fantastic seaside town that has had lots of entertainment and it cries out for fun and excitement.

"We love being here. We have grown up with it.

"Hopefully, we will bring more and more clowns here again. THe town deserves clowns. In fact, the country deserves clowns, what with Brexit.

"THat has caused a lot of worries in a lot of people but laughter is the most important thing we possess."

Ginger Nutt and Kooky were among the other clowns present.

Zaz, who went to Edward Bryant School next to the park, said: "It's good to be back and it's lovely to see so many people in the park. It's great for me to bring my two boys here so they can see what prompted me to become a clown.

"Hopefully, we can start growing again and, if Bognor Regis wants us to come back, we certainly will. I would like to look at staging shows in the Regis Centre

again."

Current Edward Bryant pupil Jody Salter, six, was among the scores of spectators who lined the parade route.

"THe clowns are fun because they have funny clothes. I've seen one go past on a bike with one wheel and no handlebars," she said. "We're going to have a picnic and watch the clowns later.

Also watching was Nathan McKenna, eight, and his mother, Shelley McKenna, 44, of Middleton. THey watched last year's event which marked the clown's 'homecoming' after three years away.

He said: "I liked it last year with all the clowns clowning around. One made me a sword and a shield out of balloons. It's good to see them again.

Shelley said: "THis is a good thing to have in the town. It brings people into Bognor Regis. Everyone knows the clowns' event is on. It's good to see the occasion through your child's eyes."

THe clowns arrived in Bognor Regis last Wednesday and staged two days of private workshops at the Jeneses Centre in Linden Road. THese were followed by workshops for seniors and toddlers at the centre last Friday before an evening gala clown show in front of some 70 spectators.

Saturday saw many of the clowns performing at the Jeneses Centre, the Regis Centre, in the London Road precinct and at the pier.

Sunday began with a clown church service in the Jeneses Centre.

Hal Brooks, 96, AKA Kerby Drill, helped to start the clowns' events. He said: "It's nice to see the clowns back.

It brings back a lot of memories."

` Tea party in park ALICE in Wonderland is coming to Hotham Park in Bognor Regis.

Today sees a Mad Hatter's Tea Party being held in the popular public space to mark the unveiling of a new sculpture.

THe revealing of the 8ft x 2.5ft hand-carved attraction funded by the Hotham Park Heritage Trust will take place at 2.30pm by the town mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon.

THe sculpture has been crafted by Simon Groves to depict the tea party with clocks in each corner, playing cards down the centre and eight mushrooms as seating with the Mad Hatter as a separate figure.

Heritage Trust press officer Malcolm Hunter said: "Knightstar Productions' youth theatre group will entertain with songs from the Disney musical Alice in Wonderland, and children are invited to come along in fancy dress if they wish.

"THe Mad Hatter's Tea Party will begin shortly after the unveiling. We look forward to welcoming children along to the Tea Party, please bring picnic blankets for them to sit on.

"THe theme of Alice in Wonderland was chosen by local schoolchildren and the cost of this sculpture has been met from funds raised by the heritage trust's Country Fair over the first weekend of August, 2016."

Charity's work restores lives as well as tables and chairs

THe growing reputation of the shop and training centre means life is getting busier for the 20 helpers and clients who turn its donations into must-have furniture to raise money for Stonepillow's work with homeless people.

Revive manager Maria Browning, one of two paid members of staff, said its aim was to help those without a home to move forward in their lives.

"Most of the clients are in our supported accommodation and a few come from our night shelters. We also hold IT workshops once a week as well as our workshops where we restore and revive furniture.

"We want to get the people who come here healthy, housed and into work. THat's what Revive is here to do - to get people back to an acceptable lifestyle. THey can then look after themselves and become employed."

She described the homeless situation around Bognor Regis as 'stable' and said the biggest cause of a person being on the streets was relationship breakdowns followed by redundancy. THis was far removed from the once-common image of a person without an address.

"I really think for a lot of people the stigma of homeless people being alcoholics or drug addicts is going. People are realising they are just normal people," she added.

NEW SIGNS are being sought by Sainsbury's for its Bognor Regis store to reflect the presence of a LloydsPharmacy branch in the shop on Shripney Road.

RESTORING furniture in Bognor Regis has helped volunteer Teresa Wordell restore her life.

Teresa has spent seven months reupholstering donated furniture and general customer service duties at the Stonepillow Revive outlet run by the charity in the High Street. She credits that time with helping her to get a paid job, as a retail customer service assistant, for the first time in more than ten years.

"I have learned so much from Stonepillow. THey have given so much fantastic support to me here. It's thanks to the people here I have got my confidence back," she said.

"Getting another job has made a big difference to me. It has given me belief in myself and allows me to pay my bills."

Town resident Teresa, 54, was among the guests at last THursday's official opening of the shop and training centre by Shelagh Legrave, OBE, who chairs Stonepillow's trustees, and the charity's patron, Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Pat Dillon Teresa was one of the first to offer her services after Revive opened last August. She wanted to make good use of the upholstery skills she taught herself when her children were young and her household furniture needed updating.

She uses that talent to show Stonepillow's homeless clients how to make the donated chairs, sofas and stools as good as new.

A TV star is one of the attractions as Bognor Regis Museum re-opens for the summer.

THe museum's hay press has been returned to the visitor attraction in full working order after being featured on BBC2's The Repair Shop.

An edition of the programme last week saw the mid-18th century farming machine brought back to life by its mechanical experts.

It came from the former Watney Home in Aldwick Road which closed in 1972 and is now the Royal Bay Nursing Home.

THe restored item can be seen at the West Street museum from 10am-4pm, Tuesdays to Sundays and bank holidays.

As well as the newly restored press, the museum's volunteers in the Bognor Regis Local History Society have compiled a Bulldozed Bognor display.

Curator Chris Burstow said: "THe committee decided, some months ago, to include a display on the subject of Bulldozed Bognor, so we asked Ron Iden to give us a list of what might feature.

"He gave us a list all right - 14 pages!

Due to space constraints we have picked the top 13, but we are already planning to expand this display for next season.

Among the buildings lost are Bognor Lodge, the original Fitzleet House and Craigweil House, where King George V convalesced.

Another featured building is the Kursaal and a chair from the 1912 building can be seen in a display cabinet.

Going further back in time, an 1876 Ordnance Survey map shows how the town has grown. It includes the village stocks from South Bersted which are shown underneath.

A new saucy postcard section highlights the town's tourism history and THe Rocks' football achievements are also captured in another new addition.

A faster computer link also makes more than 100 historic images come to life for villagers interested in views from around the area from previous years.

Mr Burstow said the biggest physical change to the museum was the start of the outhouse project to include an original Bognor bathing machine as part of a seaside experience.

"We are still a very long way from completion but we can at least say the project is underway," he said.

Some £30,000 is required in all to enable the 113-year-old symbol of Victorian seaside holidays to be put on show again.

NEW PLANS for homes on a Fontwell site have been revealed.

Patrick, Richard and Philip Jones have submitted an outline planning application to Arun District Council to build 23 dwellings around Barnfield House in Arundel Road.

THe application follows previous proposals for 24 houses in 2007 which were rejected by Arun and a government planning inspector.

Emma McBurney, the planning agent for the latest scheme, says in a report: "THe residential developments will be no more than two-storey in scale, taking the form of small apartment buildings - no more than two flats each, ensuring a feeling of identity - terraced and semi-detached housing and a detached house at the fulcrum of the road."

Call for government to stop Pagham plans GOVERNMENT minister Sajid Javid is to be urged to save Pagham.

A request for Mr Javid, the secretary of state for communities and local government, to call in plans for some 1,000 houses in the village is to be made by the parish council.

Chairman Cllr Ray Radmall told a protest rally he would sign the formal documents to seek a decision by Mr Javid to take a close look at the planning applications for Hook Lane, Sefter Road and Summer Lane in the coming weeks.

“We do not trust Arun District Council to adjudicate this. We are now taking it to the secretary of state,” he said. “We will

be going to him in the next month.

“It can cost us £50,000 but it will be money well spent. We will find the money one way or another. We are going to take a damn good case to the secretary of state. We are going to do everything we can to beat this issue. We are not going to have this village ruined.”

Cllr Radmall, pictured below right, talking to protestors, said the parish council had used a series of consultants, including three from the Sussex Wildlife Trust, to build a detailed case against the intended developments. The experts had looked at flooding, sewage, traffic and the environment.

Mr Javid's civil servants have to consider the council's request. Agreeing to call in one or more of the four housing applications for Pagham submitted to Arun District Council will see decisions about them taken away from it.

They will instead be decided after public inquiries led by planning inspectors appointed by Mr Javid.

Cllr David Huntley, the parish council's planning committee chairman, said: “We absolutely think these houses are totally the wrong thing for Pagham.

“It's completely unacceptable. We have agreed to 160 houses maximum.

Otherwise, it ceases to be a village.”

He called for the former Ford Aerodrome to be used for large-scale development instead.

Their comments were applauded by some 600 people who turned out to the rally held by the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (Pagam).

It took place behind Pagham Village Hall last Saturday next to a field being used to grow lettuces.

Some of those who attended the rally carried protest banners. One reading simply 'Save Pagham' was carried by Downlands Close resident Shirley Bass.

The 64-year-old said: “I am here to support the community of Pagham who have done a fabulous job trying to stop so many houses being built here.

“This is not about being a Nimby. This is agricultural land they want to build on and the roads around here will not take the extra traffic.

PAGAM joint founders Albert and Gill Homer presented a 1,220 name petition against the Sefter Road and Hook Lane schemes to Cllr Radmall to be presented to Arun.

Mr Homer said after the rally: “It was a fantastic turnout. It just goes to show how much interest there is in this issue."

The current plans are for 250 homes at Sefter Road, 400 at Summer Lane, 300 at Hook Lane and a further 89 off Summer Lane. Arun wants to allow 1,200 homes in Pagham under its local plan.

OLYMPIC medal-winning swimmer Cassie Patten has inspired students at Felpham Community College to succeed.

Cassie motivated the pupils in and out of the pool with how she became one of open water swimming's true legends.

THe lessons she learned from her schooldays to her international successes were enthusiastically received by the Year 7 classmates.

One of them, Alex Jordan, 12, said: "Cassie told us about the way, when she was growing up, she wanted to get a swimming medal. It was amazing seeing a video of her winning bronze in the Beijing Olympics.

"She said about how she was bullied when she was at school for being taller than the other children.

"She didn't like it because people picked on her but she didn't listen to them and just carried on swimming.

"When she won the medal at the Olympics, she knew the mornings getting up at five past four to train had paid off.

"It was a really powerful talk and very interesting. I enjoy playing the piano and I learned that if I keep going I will become good at it. Resilience and determination will make me get better."

Last Wednesday's session took place through the Sky Sports Living for Sports initiative. It was the latest tie-up between the college and sports body.

THe visits aim to teach the young people the six keys to success - mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills, sports and life knowledge, breaking barriers and planning for success.

Cycling to help beat dementia A FATHER and daughter raised more than £13,000 to provide better help for dementia patients in the Post area.

Nature's Way founder Robert and Chloe Langmead, 12, brought in the money for Dementia Support with their intense training for a tandem ride in a tough South African race.

THey spent months honing their cycling ability to tackle the 190km Cape Argus challenge in less than five hours only to watch helplessly as freak winds of 100kph led organisers to cancel the race. Undeterred, the pair intend to return next year. THey have also cycled 109km since they returned to the UK. Robert's wife and Chloe's mother, Lucinda, jointly started Dementia

Support after her father developed the condition. She experienced the frustrations and limited care which is available.

"THe biggest need in my opinion is to develop a system of support that relieves people's vulnerability and allows those living with dementia a fuller life as possible by providing easy access to services under one roof," she said.

Lucinda is a trustee of Dementia Support and is busy with her fellow trustees of working towards officially opening a support hub with a full range of services next spring.

It will be available for those who live from Emsworth to Bognor Regis and up to Midhurst and Petworth.

We first encounter young Emily at home and school, where she is an energetic girl exasperating her teachers by refusing to accept their strictures on religion. Later, the film changes mood, as Dickinson is confronted with illness, death and disappointment.

THis very faithful recreation of Dickinson’s world never feels stolid. THe fluid cinematography - those wonderful gliding shots that are found in many of Davies’s films such as Sunset Song and Distant Voices Still Lives and sheer liveliness of the writing and performances add energy to the storytelling.

Cynthia Nixon, as Dickinson, gives a stand-out performance in an exceptional biographical film.

MAKE this an Easter to remember with Arundel Castle’s much-loved Normans and Crusaders event.

Visitors will be transported back to 1215 during the Barons War, when unpopular King John battled with the Barons over money and leadership disagreements.

Set on the American Lawns, beneath the oldest part of Arundel Castle, Raven Tor Living History Group will showcase 12th century crafts, weapons and combat, all set within a period style encampment.

Visitors to the popular event will also have the chance to witness captivating archery shows, as well as test their own targeting

skills with a new and free feature – have-a-go archery for those aged over 8 years old.

THe day will also feature stunning falconry displays, ancient cookery demonstrations and enchanting tales from a professional storyteller.

Filled with the sights and sounds of the late Norman period, this event promises entertainment for the whole family this Easter.

Castle manager Bryan McDonald described the amount of activities on offer. He said: “From interactive craft sessions to live combat displays, have-a-go archery and a delicious hog roast, there really is something for everyone this Easter weekend.”

Artist Tricia Johnson is proudly bringing her collection The Art of Seaweed Pressing to the museum’s gallery.

Her assortment of pressed seaweeds is both unusual and beautiful.

Tricia used specimens of seaweed to showcase the beauty of life along her local shoreline in West Sussex.

As a local artist and teacher she thrives on exploring new mediums and techniques, and seaweed pressing is her latest artistic

experiment. She said: “THe works in this exhibition were initially inspired by scrapbooks held at London’s Natural History Museum.

“THese books were made by a Victorian ‘lady scientist’. Flower pressing was an acceptable leisure activity for ladies during the Victorian era and seaweed pressing enabled women to study natural history within the bounds of the social constraints of their time.

“I was intrigued by how beautiful these pressings still are now and wondered at the process used to make them. ” On May 13, Tricia will be visiting the museum to give the public a chance to meet her and ask questions about her work.

Admission is free. THe exhibition is open Mon-Fri 9am–4.30pm and Sat, 10.30am-4.30pm.

THIS 15th century smugglers’ haunt has character in abundance to distinguish it from other pubs in the area.

Even though it has sloping ceilings and traditional fireplaces, The Lion has certainly adapted to modern demands with its exemplary menus and unfaltering lively atmosphere courtesy of their weekend DJ, appearances by live bands and, of course, their friendly staff. Despite this, the historic appeal of the place is never compromised as old and new blend together for a homely yet lively pub.

Dining at The Lion is always a delectable experience with a section of the building devoted entirely to its popular restaurant area. Their extensive menu offers a range of meals that everyone can enjoy, including a comprehensive selection for both vegetarians and celiacs (all you have to do is ask for their specific vegetarian menu, and to hear what the gluten free options are from their attentive waiting team.)

To start why not try a bowl of their freshly made soup of the day, or perhaps homemade duck liver pate complemented by caramelised onion chutney?

The accomplished chefs at The Lion pride themselves on their homemade dishes and creating meals as delicious as possible. A great example of this is their hugely popular steak and kidney pie priced at only £11 for which the puff pastry crust is made within the kitchen of The Lion.

They have a generous list of meat dishes to choose from such as pan fried calves liver with bacon, slow roasted duck leg, 8oz fillet steak and many more. All their main dishes are served with a choice of golden chips, creamy mash or fresh new potatoes as well as salad or vegetables (unless otherwise stated) to ensure you won’t leave feeling hungry!

However, it is their exquisite fish dishes that really bring something special to their menus. As well as the beloved cod and chips there is also the option of whole grilled Atlantic plaice and grilled skate wing among others.

For further variety the specials boards, updated regularly, add a range of both well-loved and more adventurous options. Whenever it is freshly available you can expect to find lobster and crab dishes on these boards - a popular choice for lovers of seafood.

The dessert boards are also regularly

updated with whatever delightful treats the chef has conjured up.

Customer favourites include the warming syrup sponge pudding, the light and fluffy lemon meringue pie and their devilishly good chocolate profiteroles.

As with the rest of the menus, the dessert prices are extremely good value at only £5 to make sure your meal concludes with a tasty treat.

For those with smaller appetites they are currently offering a lighter lunch menu for only £10 for two courses or £15 for three. These include reduced portions of dishes available on the normal menu but when combined with a starter, dessert or both it is still a full meal.

The Lion is family friendly and they have a specific children's menu containing smaller- sized portions of favourite meals such as cod and chips and even roast dinners on Sunday.

With Easter weekend just around the corner this is the perfect time to pay The Lion a visit. There's plenty of time to indulge yourself and your loved one with their delicious menu.

There's always plenty of fun to be had at The Lion throughout the year with regular themed nights in their restaurant. This week's Burns Night proved to be a hit complete with haggis, tartan and plenty of Drambuie.

They also frequently hold Mexican, Italian and Indian nights to offer customers a taste of something different. It's worth looking out for future events such as these.

Of course, though, it's not just about the food. And certainly the original appeal of The Lion would have been the drinks on offer as well as the guaranteed socialising found there.

This hasn't really changed. The Lion is still very much a social hub in Pagham throughout the week. Friday and Saturday nights there promise to be filled with plenty of laughs as well as music, provided by their DJ after 9pm.

It isn't uncommon to find staff members enjoying the music too with the occasional boogie by the bar!

That's another aspect of The Lion that distinguishes it from other places.

There is a real community spirit found between not only the staff and their customers but from the landlord Stuart and manager Ken as well. The team there are always happy to welcome new faces in for drinks or food, or

As part of the Hall and Woodhouse Brewery, The Lion is able to provide great quality beers favoured by its customers, such as the draught beers Badger First Call and Badger Tanglefoot. However, there are plenty of other drinks to choose from at the bar whether you're in the mood for wine, spirits or soft drinks.

Live music often makes an appearance on Sunday afternoons as a refreshing way to end your week especially after sampling one of their superb Sunday roast complete with all the trimmings. In the summer months the live music is performed outside for the perfect way to spend a hot English

afternoon!

Over the Easter weekend they will be host to several popular local bands ready to give you the ultimate weekend feeling!

Go s-hopping for these value for bunny wines Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

NOW THAT spring is well and truly on its way we must always be thankful for what we have.

Reminiscing is therapeutic at the best of times, but positively cathartic in darker times, so I revisited the seventies and eighties, music–wise so to speak, last Saturday in the form of an Iron Tyger gig at the Chichester Inn. My dear departed friend, Laurie, would have marvelled at the energy and musical prowess of the Brighton-based band, recording currently with Bob Carruthers of Coda records. THe female vocalist Roz blasted out anthemic rock in imperious fashion to the delight of a packed audience and is pictured above alongside other band members and one honorary member!

Another source of therapy is indubitably wine and the prospect of saving money on our favourite tipple! I duly headed to Tesco's, lured by the 25 per cent discount on six bottles or more.

Apparently available throughout Easter until April 24.

I endeavoured to focus generally on new wines added to their collection

and was intrigued by the Tesco's Finest 2016 Gaillac reducing from £7 to £5.25 if one of six bottles or more. A cheeky little number, ideal as an apéritif, whose provenance is from one of the oldest wine-making areas of Ancient Gaul now part of south - western France, this teaser Gaillac Perlé could rival Picpoul de Pinet as a popular choice with its delicate spritz and preponderance of stone fruit flavours!

In the battle of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, the Villa Maria 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is down to a very respectable £7.50 which, if one of six or more, is yours for just £5.63 and has

rich gooseberry, lime and tropical fruit flavours and is a no-brainer at this price!

However you cannot avoid Graham Norton (love him or loathe him!) and his 2016 Sauvignon Blanc nominally priced at £9 reducing to £6.75, if one of six, is a blend of six wines from the Marlborough region with tropical fruits to the fore and a real zing and luxurious assault on the taste buds - a veritable winner, in my humble opinion! Two Burgundy wines then caught my eye with the Louis Jadot 2014 Pouilly Fuissé priced at £17, but diminishing in a pecuniary sense to £12.75, if one of six or more, proving to be a textbook Chardonnay with

white flowers and a hint of hazelnut, a touch of oak and delightful creaminess.

Nonetheless my prize selection was that of the 2014 Château de Rully I er Cru La Pucelle priced at £16, but a mere £12, if one of six or more.

Antonin Rodet runs this vineyard dating back to the 12th century and the name La Pucelle refers to the youngest daughter being accorded an inheritance.

THis wine is delightfully fragrant with creamy vanilla and a long finish and is just what I would expect from a fine white Burgundy - let it warm up in the glass and delight you! In terms of Easter celebrations I must point out, at this

juncture, that you can procure a Plaza Centro Prosecco for just £5.07, if one of six bottles, and, at this giveaway price, light and quaffable with good bubbles an offer to snap up post haste!

In terms of red wines, the 2014 Patrice Chodot Fleurie was a delight given its £6 price tag, if indeed one of six, and exuded fresh berry and cherry fruits and is a true gem to savour!

Also, at eleven pounds reducing to a rather enticing £8.75 the Valpolicella Ripasso 2015 is dark fruits infused and smooth to boot, so well worth a punt.

Method

INGREDIENTS

• 150g/5oz butter • 4 slices of brioche • 125ml/4fl oz white wine vinegar • 3itres/5¼pints water • 4 eggs • 2 banana shallots or onions, finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic • 250g mixed mushrooms trimmed, washed and sliced • 2 tsp freshly chopped, parsley • salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Melt the butter in a pan. Add sliced brioche and colour on each side for approximately 1 minute. Remove and keep warm.

2. Add white wine vinegar to the water and boil stir water to create a whirlpool effect.

3. Crack eggs into separate cups. Pour from the cups into the water and poach for 3 minutes. Remove using a slotted spoon.

4. Add 55g/2oz butter to a hot saucepan and sauté the shallots or onions and garlic.

5. Now add the cleaned mushrooms and cook over a moderate heat, season and drain (mushrooms contain a lot of water).

6. Serve the mushrooms on the sliced brioche, top with the poached eggs and sprinkle with the chopped parsley.

IT’S EASTER and time to indulge! Maybe you are coming to the end of giving something up for Lent and the thought of chocolate Easter eggs are becoming more and more appealing.

THe problem with most chocolate is its not really chocolate, although it says that on the packet, the highest content is sugar.

Some bars have such a low percentage of chocolate, you wonder how it can be called a chocolate bar at all? I believe the French call our ‘high street’ branded chocolate 'cooking chocolate', as they would only use for cooking and not general consumption.

Most of us think we are addicted to chocolate, but in fact it’s probably the sugar content we are addicted too. Milk chocolate and or white chocolate cannot claim any health benefits (sorry!) especially those with caramel or nougat fillings as its just added sugar and fat and highly processed.

However, make the switch to organic, Fairtrade and high cocoa varieties and you will reduce the foods impact on the world as well as our waistlines, and even gain some health benefits in the process.

THe secret goodness within dark chocolate is that it contains flavonoids, which act as an antioxidant protecting the body from free

radicals, toxins and harmful substances. It also relaxes blood pressure through the production of nitric oxide and can help balance certain hormones in the body. It tastes great, stimulates endorphin production because of the feeling of pleasure and indulgence, and contains serotonin, which acts as an anti-depressant by giving you a bit of a lift.

Moving on to something even more beneficial and boosting to your health is raw chocolate.

Using the real bean in its natural state means its not cooked, over processed or mixed with cheap filling harmful ingredients. THis type of chocolate is known as cacao and is usually fused with coconut butter, berries and/or nuts.

It contains no vegetable fat, milk or sugar so you know when you are eating it that it's all good for you. Cacao is a powerful healing ingredient that has over 300 chemically identifiable compounds rich in anti oxidants, proteins, good fats, calcium, iron, carotene, thiamine and riboflavin. It sounds so good!

Osteopathy explained AS PART of Chichester Osteopath's spring promotion, Simon & Henrietta attended the Havant Complementary Health Group on Monday. THis group was founded over 30 years ago to educate people about complementary treatments available to patients, originally with cancer. THey now have a monthly talk.

Recently, the subject was Ayurvedic medicine, with dementia and yoga coming in the near future. THey still raise money for cancer care.

Simon demonstrated a ‘general’ osteopathic treatment to a willing model and Henrietta provided an interesting description of the lymphatic system.

THe interested audience asked many questions, including the all-time favourite: “What is the difference between an Osteopath and a Chiropractor?” You can find the answer at facebook. com/ChichesterOsteopath.

We were also able to explain that we treat the patient, not the condition. So, we don’t treat asthma per se, but we do help asthmatic patients with their breathing by relaxing any muscle tightness between the ribs and around the spine.

More commonly, we treat people with low back pain, head and neck aches.

Baby Felix came to visit us recently because he was unsettled. Despite feeding well, and growing at a good rate, he was still distressed and would not sleep for extended periods. We were able to relax some of his muscle tightness and joint strains. Now, both mum and baby are feeling happier!!

One of the more interesting things that came up was related to nutrition. A lot of the attendees take various dietary supplements to improve their general health.

Community News & Views FIVE neighbouring WIs form the South Rife Group which meet together in friendship twice a year.

It was the turn of Pagham Harbour WI to host the latest event which took place in Pagham Village's small hall.

May, the president of Pagham Harbour, opened the meeting welcoming everyone and introducing Margaret, chairman of the South Rife Group.

Apologies were received from Melanie who wis the Federation representative. However, members were introduced to Chris, who was to stand in for Melanie. Two other members were introduced who are on the Federation Board of Trustees and also hold jobs at Federation level.

Jerusalem was sung, followed by a very entertaining show from Marc Seymour, a magician and singer, who kept the group enthralled with rope, card and disappearing tricks from his Magic Circle repertoire. He gave out balloon gifts for several 'helpers', then sang some popular songs which members enthusiastically joined in with. THe show concluded with a beautiful white rabbit appearing from his little house which was delightful. Members gave him an X Factor vote of thanks from Celia who commented that there are not so many opportunities to see magicians these days, especially one who is multi-talented.

Tea and cake was then enjoyed, with time to look at the bring and buy sales table and the competition table, this being a competition of magic wands.

THen the business section of the meeting started with Margaret introducing Chris who showed the latest range of Bunting kitchen accessories by the WI. Karen went through the correspondence, including an invitation to Bognor Regis WI's fashion show on May 6 and also Bognor Regis Afternoon's table top sale at the Jenesis Centre on May 20. All are welcome to both events.

Other West Sussex Federation events were brought to members’ attention, also the fact that this year is the Sussex Centenary so the federation has a full calendar of events for members to enjoy.

Members were asked to keep looking in the Federation magazine for these, one of which is a picnic at Bramber Beeches in June.

Margaret then reported the fantastic day members had visiting Denman College a few weeks ago, travelling up by coach together.

THen followed the raffle and the result of the competition, which was won by Pagham Harbour.

Margaret thanked everyone for a super afternoon and reminded members of the next meeting date of October 3 at 2.15pm to be hosted by North Bersted Village WI.

TEMPERATURES as high as 15C in the Post area have well and truly signalled that summer is on its way.

THis spring scene of the River Lavant and its flower-laden bank was captured by reader Terry Timblick to show the recent conditions in all their glory.

THe bright yellow daffodils create a timeless scene to delight the viewer as the river winds it way from East Dean to Chichester Harbour through Charlton, Singleton, West Dean, Lavant, Fordwater and the city itself.

Sir, I was delighted to read of Cllr Goldsmith’s initiative to resurrect the A27 Chichester bypass project through a community workshop.

I was, however, disappointed to read that it appeared Chichester District centric and, as a postscript, that Bognor Regis was seeking to hold a similar and separate workshop.

THe greatest contribution to the horror that is our bypass, over and above the 42 per cent of through traffic, is the volume of traffic to and from the three roads that impact this stretch of road, the A259, the B2145/2166 and the A286.

THese are the three roads on which the inhabitants of all parishes south of Chichester rely. THey include all parishes from West Wittering to Middleton on Sea, some eight in Chichester district and 11 in Arun district.

A very significant addition to his horror is the recent decision by Arun District Council to include in its local plan applications to build a further 4,000 homes in Pagham and Bersted

in the near future and the government imposition of targets to build a further minimum of 1,000 homes every year until 2031 in the district.

THe impact of the inevitable huge increase in traffic volumes will be devastating.

On the assumption that any improvements to the bypass are not likely to be achieved within five years, life for those in the south and users of the bypass is going to become intolerable.

While there is a major battle looming between ADC and its citizens in the far corner of its district based on the very real problems of inadequate infrastructure, jobs and facilities, I very much hope that the county council’s future efforts to find resolution will be completely inclusive of all those communities described and that we start thinking harder about the impact of housing plans on our highways. ENERGETIC members of VK Gym, pictured above, in Bognor Regis have been gearing themselves up for a charitable challenge.

THe family-run gym has been encouraging members to put their stamina to the test at the annual Bognor Prom 10K race.

With their sponsorship in aid of the Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice, among other charities, the team at VK are hopeful that as much money as possible will be raised.

Not only are clients of the gym putting their fitness to the test at the eagerly anticipated event but they will be joined by members of staff as well.

Team member Lisa Moulson, 27, who has previously raised money for the hospice at other events such as the Brighton Marathon spoke of her excitement for the event.

She said: “I think it’s good for the community that a small family-run gym is supporting a local charity.”

She will be joined by her colleague Jack Parham, aged 20, and a group of other members, including Ernesto Andrade-Paris whose connection to the hospice garnered the team a visit from Chestnut Tree's patron Paul Jones on Wednesday.

Lisa was pleased to see the members joining in with the event. She said: "We're so glad that our members are getting involved."

"Our priority is to raise as much money as possible for the hospice."

Anyone interested in helping the team raise funds can visit the gym in the South Bersted industrial estate where sponsorship forms can be found in reception.

SEVERAL awards have put Chichester College ahead of the rest at the first Lee Stafford Education national student competition.

THe college came away with three of the top prizes – along with several other accolades – at the event, which saw the seven Lee Stafford Education partner colleges go head-to-head in London last week. Chichester College took the ultimate prize when it was named the Lee Stafford Education College of the Year, pictured below, in recognition of its achievements and standards reached by students and staff.

Chichester apprentice Lauren Chater, 17, took first place in the first year styling category, after producing a mermaid-inspired style using the ‘twisted tong’ recipe.

Lauren, who works at the Mark Lewis hair salon in East Wittering, also went on to be named Student of the Year.

She said: “I was really nervous when we were travelling up to London – everyone on the coach was chatting but I was so quiet, which isn’t like me at all!

“But once the competition started, I just seemed to relax and spent the whole time talking to my model as I worked on her hair.

“I never thought I’d win, so I was really surprised when they called out my name – I thought it was a joke at first as I had seen the other people in my category and they were amazing.

“THen to win Student of the Year – that was unbelievable, especially as I only started the course in September! I was in shock but I’m really happy, and my family are very proud of me.”

Julia Williams, head of learning for service industries (including hair and beauty) added: “We are absolutely blown away by the team’s success in London.

“I’m so very proud of Lauren and the other five students competing for the college. It is a tremendous achievement.

“THe icing on the cake was being named College of the Year, which is phenomenal. I know how hard the team work to ensure they are hitting – and exceeding - the standards set by Lee Stafford Education. THis is extremely well deserved.”

In addition to these awards, students Jodie Mayer and Zana Kuklyte came second for Chichester in the cutting and styling and level 3 colouring: cutting and styling categories respectively.

Tutors Sam Morgan, Sam Lister and Sue Sweeney were also named ‘Master Trainers’ and were presented with pairs of engraved, gold scissors to celebrate their Big 10 achievements in 22 recipes (techniques used to master different elements of hair styles, cuts and colours).

Big 10s are awarded to trainers who have reached the highest standard of achievement during their own practical assessments.

Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chichester College principal, said: “I am absolutely delighted for our hair team – both staff and students.

“We have always believed we have an enormously talented team in our training salon – and this proves it. THe awards given to our students and staff recognise the achievements and effort that they put in every day.”

VOTERS around Bognor Regis still have time to change their postal or poxy voting arrangements ahead of next month's county council elections.

Anyone who wishes to do so must register their application by 5pm next Tuesday. More details are available from the Arun District Council website at: http://www.arun.gov.uk/registration.

Arun will publish the formal notice of poll and polling stations by April 26 - a week before voting takes place on May 4.

THe polling stations will be open from 7am-10pm and are detailed on the polling cards which have been delivered to homes around the town.

THere are 43 candidates standing for election in the seven divisions in the Bognor Regis area.

THey represent all the main political parties as well as Independents in a few of the seats.

For many years, the Co-op Milk Depot was situated in Ockley Road, where today we have a carwash facility. When I was living in Gainsboro Road in the 1970s it was very handy just to nip around the corner to get your milk and fresh Devonshire cream for any special occasion, or the unexpected visitor. Eventually,this service was moved to Chichester, the local yard closed and the buildings were demolished.

The first shop opened in the town during 1933 and it was known as Pimco – Portsea Island Mutual Co-operative Society. This store was located in Canada Grove, apparently facing the Pavilion Gardens, as their point of reference. Then for 35 years it was the Aladdin’s Cave and now a European supermarket.

The Co-op's advertising at this time included mention of just one of their services that of ‘the collection and delivery of orders free to all parts of the district’ also, apparently, it was necessary to mention that ‘full dividend was given’ even for orders delivered.

During the Second World War, their advertising remarked that you could ‘enjoy your holiday’ with the phrase, ‘let the Co-operative take care of your emergency ration cards.’ By now the advertisement included its branches in North Bersted and Hawthorn Road.

With the growth in population by the 1950s, the Co-op business in the town was expanding and so it required larger premises. To meet the needs, two sites in the High Street were bought. One site was at No 62, which was a two-storey building between the old bus station and Cleeves on the corner, where today we have the NatWest Bank. This site is thought to have been built around the 1820s and was occupied for a time by Wade’s the builder and after 1945 by one of the town’s secondhand dealers, Mr Ashton.

This store in the High Street sold almost everything, similar to that which today we purchase in any of the out of town supermarkets. The original store was demolished and a Co-op departmental store built which opened in August, 1957.

In addition, the Co-op purchased another shop across the road at No 55, and this was a self-service food hall, which also opened in August, 1957.

Garforths next occupied the site, now a supermarket. The food hall was on

the ground floor and an upper floor was for staff rooms, as in 1958 they anticipated employing in the region of 40–55 people in these two stores, all of whom were to be recruited locally.

The society secretary at the time, remarked that the ‘food hall would be self-serve – a trend that was only just beginning to make its presence felt.’

The first day of opening for the departmental store saw customers being enticed by opening offers, which included a range of goods including white weather duffle coats for boys, from 35/- (£1.75p) and long sleeved men’s shirts at 15/- (75p). Axminster carpets were also available from 42/(£2.10p). Now take your mind back to those very popular uncut moquette studio couches that were all the rage for a princely sum of £28.9s. 6d or 104 weekly payments of £2.9.0d. I wonder if there are any still in a bedsit somewhere in the town? They also sold a range of the somewhat new plastic items, including tables, cake dishes, flowerpot holders and even plastic waste paper bins at 3/- or 15p.

Trade and tastes eventually changed. Out of town shopping was becoming more popular and the main store was beginning to struggle so changed to become known as Coop Homemaker. Here, items for the home were the order of the day and

in one advertisement in 1983 you could purchase an Amstrad CTV, 14in portable TV for £169.95. Ultimately, this store also closed and for a number of years were taken over by a company called Tracey’s who also sold furniture and household items.

During 1983, the Co-op advertised that as their organisation was 100 years old, it had mounted a search to find citizens who were 100 years old during November. These people or their families were asked to contact the society now known as the Caring Sharing Co-op.

When we entered the new millennium, the Co-op believed it was now a family of business, with activities ranging from food to finance, farms to funerals. Also, it had a large presence on the internet, which is a far cry from its start of working in communities.

In Hawthorn Road, the shop continued, while the main town centre shops were closing. Without these, the Co-op looked for other sites and the closure of the Olby’s/Cover’s site in Hawthorn Road at the junction with Gravits Lane saw it bought by the Co-op and its new supermarket was given the go ahead in February, 1993.

So there are two Co-ops in the road one run by Southern Co-op and the other the national group.

AS OUR town centre changes, I thought I would look at one of our remaining historical shops, The Co-op. How many people can remember their Co-op dividend number or that of their parents? My parent’s number was 11188.

This was a number unique to you and one which allowed you to collect your dividend, I think, annually. As part of the Co-operative Society’s policy of profit sharing, a dividend of 1s. 8d (8p) in the £ was paid to those who joined. For a number of years the dividend could be collected from the church hall in Sudley Road, at the rear of St. John’s Church, today the site of Boots and Sports Direct.

Later, stamps were given, in the same way as the old Green Shield stamps, and these were redeemable in the stores. No store cards to remember, just your number when asked in the shop – certainly less to carry around and much safer.

Did you know that the Co-operative Society for the town was established in 1873 in Portsmouth? Its expansion to Chichester and beyond was due to suburban expansion. Do you know how many sites there have been in the town over the years and their locations today?

The Picanto is fitted with 14-inch steel wheels in its most basic form, and customers can select one of four aluminium alloy wheel designs, ranging from 14-inch to 16-inch in diameter.

The exterior of the Picanto is complemented by new projection headlamps with LED indicators and LED daytime running lights.

For the first time, Kia also offers the Picanto in a new ‘GT-Line’ specification, inspired by the sportier appearance of the company’s higher-performance ‘GT’ models. In GT-Line specification, the exterior is completed with red, silver and black highlights in the grille,

side intakes, along the side skirts and in the rear valance, as well as chrome-tipped twin exhausts.

Inside the new Picanto, Kia designers have created a more modern, refined cabin with new materials and layout adding a greater sense of quality. The predominantly horizontal design adds greater visual width to the interior, highlighting the increased cabin dimensions.

The new Picanto provides occupants with more leg- and head-room than best-selling rivals, while a lower step height makes getting in and out easier. The boot grows to a maximum 255 litres – the most of any car in the class – and also features a two-step boot floor, which can be raised or lowered by 145 mm to create additional space as required.

New refinement measures adopted for the latest Picanto include a new soundproofing panel beneath the dashboard and in the floor of the cabin, while expandable soundabsorbent foam has been applied to lower sections of the A- and B-pillars. Beneath the bonnet, a new sound-absorbent engine cover and reshaped air intake help to isolate engine noise from the cabin. The structure of the engine mounts has also been revised to counteract engine vibrations. As a result of these upgrades, the new Picanto produces a quietest-in-class 39 dB of noise at idle – 3 dB less than the current A-segment leader – and 68 dB at a steady cruise.

CHICHESTER RFC are all but relegated with one game left after stumbling to a surprise defeat to a side already down and out.

The Blues have been flirting with the drop all season as they have struggled to find their feet in National League Three (London and South East).

With other relegation rivals picking up points in recent weeks, Chi have failed to deliver - and after slumping to a 30-24 defeat at already relegated Colchester, they only have themselves to blame.

Now, the Blues have only pride to play for when they round off a disappointing campaign at home to third-placed Westcombe Park at Oaklands Park on April 22. (3pm).

It could have been all so different though - with recent weeks delivering defeats to struggling Guildford at home and then on the road to second-bottom Colchester.

Chi probably should have come away from Essex with all five points. But they were denied a late try by a debatable refereeing decision.

Roger Gould, the club's press secretary, said: "Only an extremely unlikely failure by Sutton and Epsom to beat [bottom-side] Amersham and Chiltern in their last match could save the

Blues and that also assumes the latter will win at home against Westcombe Park.

"With Southend and Guildford both winning with bonus points, they sealed Chichester's fate. It was an open, end to end game at Colchester and the margin was small.

"Chichester emerged with two bonus points but they had succumbed to another fightback by determined opponents in a second half."

The Blues had found themselves 19-15 up at the break, thanks to tries from Jack Maslen (2) and Ben Robson. But they started to suffer as the referee sin-binned Ross Miller for a dubious offence.

Chris Johnson did seal a bonus point for the Blues touching down for Chi's fourth score. But Colchester kept on coming, scoring two tries and a penalty to put them into a 30-24 lead.

Chichester tried desperately to retrieve the situation. Two drives put them between the uprights and there was great rejoicing as Aaron Davies pressed down for the try in the last minute. Disbelief followed when the unsighted referee ruled he had been held up.

Further shock followed when the official penalised Chi again in the scrum, to seal the defeat - with it near certain relegation.

f Four Dragonflyers will travel to Birmingham in June

BOGNOR'S Dragon Flyers trampolinists just keep on soaring to more success - with four club members being selected to perform on the national stage.

Anya Johnston, Izzy Hauxwell and Libby Morton have all qualified at the elite end in the NDP 7 category while Rosie Budge will participate at NDP 5, which is the world age criteria for under-12s.

The quartet will bounce on to Birmingham's Barclaycard arena in June to represent the South in the UK regional team finals.

It comes after another successful couple of weeks for the team that trains in the Regis School.

Johnston, Hauxwell and Budge all took gold at the regional team qualifiers in Alton in Hampshire.

They were joined by young Manon Bailey, who also came first in the NDP 2 novice category.

In the same contest, Morton and Sofija Kalnicenko finished second and third in the

NDP 7 category.

That means an incredible six trophies made their way back to Bognor after the competition - much to the delight of Dragon Flyers' head coach Linda O'Leary.

Also competing among the nine Flyers at the event were Harvey Nighy and Amelia Glass (NDP 2) and Lucy Hijmans (NDP 5) who finished in fourth, 14th and fifth position.

O'Leary said: "With three of the region's top ranked performers, some squad members who have already qualified for Birmingham choosing to opt out of Alton and Johnston taking ninth in Britain at the elite schools finals, the club proves it has strength in depth."

The Dragon Flyers Trampoline club has been running for more then ten years across the Portsmouth, Chichester and Bognor area.

THE BOGNOR Double-In Double-out Darts league is over for another season.

But what a year it has been.

To round off the end of the competition, teams took part in the Blind Pairs knockout followed by the trophy presentation at the Newtown Social Club.

A total of 56 players took part in the knockout, just four short of the record.

The first few rounds saw a 112 in-shot from Ashley Clements (POW 'B'), 100 in-shot from Lee Hellyer (Chi Snooker Club), and 100 in-shot & 125 outshot from Gary Blackwood (Newtown Raiders).

The quarter-finals saw a 100 in-shot from Wayne Wadsworth (Claremont Samba's) followed immediately by a 116 in-shot from Richard Pennells.

Wadsworth & partner Pat O'Hara (Hunston Club) failed to win the game and left the knockout.

The first semi-final saw Pennells and Rachel Hall (POW 'A') take on Rhonda West (Newtown Raiders) & Andy Cooper (Cabin Cruisers). The first leg saw Pennells hit the winning double. The second saw Cooper take it to the last leg.

Pennells started the last leg with a 108 in-shot, helping himself and Hall take the win 2-1 and the spot in the final.

The second semi-final saw Blackwood and partner Graham Clear (Hunston Club) against Adam Judd (Friary Arms) & Lee Chapman (Neptune).

Blackwood started with a 120 in-shot and they won the leg. Judd hit a 100 inshot in the second leg, but Blackwood hit another 120 in-shot.

A ton each from Judd & Chapman still couldn't get them past their opponents who took the win 2-0 and the second spot in the final.

The final saw Blackwood & Clear take on Pennells & Hall, with Blackwood winning the bull and going first.

Blackwood scored the in-shot straight away with 80, and follow it with 85, while Clear hit 91 & 100.

Hall eventually hit their in-shot, but they were too far behind to do anything.

With 2 darts Blackwood hit double top to take the first leg after 20 darts.

The second leg saw both teams miss the first in-shot, but Blackwood & Hall started the game. Blackwood hit a 140 early in the leg, but Pennells replied with a ton, followed by 86 from Hall.

Blackwood had 137 left, but missed double 10 for the win. Clear bust the finish that was left for him by hitting the wrong double, and Blackwood also bust the finish on his next throw.

This gave Hall a chance at double top, but she missed, giving Clear another chance, but he hit the wrong double again. Pennells then missed the double and left 20 for Hall.

But, before she had the chance, Blackwood stepped up and hit double 5 with the second dart, taking the game and the match, making himself and Clear the Blind Pairs Champions, and taking home £100 between them.

Then it was on to the other trophies, which were supplied by Aford Awards (the new owners of C&M Trophies of Littlehampton).

The final league positions were: DIVISION 1 - Overall, singles and pairs winners - Claremont Samba's; overall and singles runners-up - POW 'B'; pairs runners-up - Hunston Club.

Bennett to leave after strained season at Nyetimber Lane

PAGHAM'S manager Mark Bennett is to leave the club at the end of the season - but a replacement could be named very soon.

It's been an up-and-down year for the Lions, who had promotion to the Ryman South top of their wishlist.

And while the club has made it to the league cup final against Haywards Heath on May 1, Pagham sit fourth in the SCFL Premier.

Despite a number of high-profile players leaving after Christmas, chairman Tony Shea has stood by Bennett all year. In a statement confirming the news, Shea said he and the board had "reluctantly accepted" the decision.

The statement said: "Mark has told the chairman that he has enjoyed his time in charge of the team and grateful for all the support he has received, but feels he needs a rest from football management generally.

"The club has reluctantly accepted Mark's decision and will of course support him in his efforts to end the season on a high."

Following the shock news, Pagham fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Crawley Down at home on Saturday. They return to action at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (3pm).

BOGNOR'S Simon Gill led the way for the town's tone zone runners at the Brighton Marathon.

More than 12,000 people took part in the 26-mile race on the hottest day of the year so far. This included a squad of 29 from Bognor Tone Zone Runners.

Gill well and truly did the club proud and scorched to a fantastic tenth place in two hours 39 minutes (2.39).

Competing in his first marathon was 20 year old Jack Penfold.

He started strongly but hit the dreaded wall at 20 miles as the energy-sapping heat took effect on the youngster.

After slowing for three miles, he was spurred on by his fellow club members at the side of the road and dug deep to run the final stretch to finish in 3.27.

Sy Daymond, Christopher Dummer and Jess Thomson were also competing in their first marathons.

Daymond and Dummer ran well to finish in 3.25 and 3.44.

Jess finished slightly after them in 4.04 after also being effected in the last quarter by the severe

heat.

The final marathon debutantes were Daryl Fairbrother and Michelle Miles in 4.18 and 5.47.

Two runners amazingly achieved PBs, Colin Hiscock in 3.27 and Paul Wells in 5.48.

Wells along with Claire Baker is raising money for a defibrillator in Bognor Regis town centre.

Another marathon taking place on the same day was in Paris.

The club had four runners taking part in even hotter conditions than Brighton. Chris Gallagher ran with aplomb to cross the line in 3.39.

Husband and wife team, Mark and Jackie Willamson, ran 4.18 and 4.26 respectively, with Jo Hinckley completing the course in 4.41.

In another feat of endurance, Paul Coe took part in the South Downs 50 mile challenge.

As the name suggests, this 50mile run starts from Worthing College and ends at Eastbourne via the South Downs Way. He overcame the distance and the 6,100ft of hills to finish in a very creditable 10 hrs 49 mins.

IT WAS delight for Dolcetti as the Chichester City starlet scored a hat-trick to seal third spot for the Lillywhites in the SCFL Premier.

The young Italian playmaker, who is dualsigned with Bognor, stole the show as Chi secured a comfortable 3-1 win on the road against Horsham YMCA. Those three points, along with a defeat for Pagham, means Miles Rutherford's side will finish at least third in the league this year.

to Shoreham, Chi could yet climb even higher.

But to do so they will probably need to win all of their four remaining matches - starting tomorrow at home to Loxwood (3pm) - and pray that their in-form rivals slip up in the next three weeks.

Chi's task is made harder by the fact they must make the short trip down the road to local rivals Pagham on Easter Monday for an early kick off (11am).

Fans of both sides will no doubt want to see a better spectacle than the reverse fixture on

Boxing Day, which saw both sides play out a dull 1-1 draw.

Elsewhere, in SCFL Division One, Selsey put up a spirited effort against league leaders Saltdean United.

After pulling themselves back into the game with a Joe Clarke strike, the Blues eventually conceded late to slump to a 3-1 loss.

But Steve Bailey will be pleased with the effort shown from his side, who look set to secure a top half finish in a very competitive league.

Selsey, who are seventh, return to action tomorrow, making the trip to struggling Ringmer (3pm).

Then it's back home for Easter Monday when second-place East Preston make the relatively short trip along the coast (11am).

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham have been crowned champions after a 2-0 victory over Roffey.

Goals in each half from Marco Giambelardini and Jake Lafferty sealed the win and the title for Andy Probee's side.

They were helped by third-placed Sidelsham, who held Jarvis Brook, in second place, to a goalless draw on the road.

The Sids welcome the Robins to the Rec on Monday (11am) with local pride very much at stake. After pushing Bosham hard all season, Daren Pearce's side will want a win to seal a third place finish.

Chi Ladies on a high after defeating rivals CHICHESTER Ladies all but sealed the title after battering nearest challengers Plymouth Argyle 3-0 at Oaklands Park.

Liam Greenfield's side have been in imperious form all season winning 16 of their 17 matches in the FA Women's Premier League South West Division One. But for all their good play, Chi have been unable to shrug off Plymouth - that was until Sunday when strikes from from Charley Wilson-Blakely, Cherelle Khassal and Chloe Dowdell sealed the victory.

That win puts them 13 points clear of Argyle in second with Chi having just five games to go.

Wilson-Blakely deservedly opened the scoring for Chichester after only ten minutes.

It took until the hour mark for the Green Army to double the lead - Khassal running on to a through ball, to nod the ball past the onrushing keeper and side foot it into the goal.

The Devon side threw everything at Chichester to try and get back into the match but to no avail. Instead the scoring was rounded off by substitue Dowdell who netted in injury time to seal the three points and put the title within touching distance.

Next up for Chi is a home match against Basingstoke on Thursday at 8pm.

Then it's on the road to Cheltenham on Sunday (2pm. Win both and Chi could well be league champions.

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell is urging his table-topping Rocks to take things one game at a time as the side stand on the brink of promotion.

The Nyewood Lane side have defied the odds all season. And, with just three games to go, the Rocks sit top of the Ryman Premier.

After seven months of giving everything on the pitch, Howell's close-knit squad know that the next three days will decide their fate.

First up is a tough match against Harlow Town at home tomorrow (3pm), before a virtual title decider at second-placed Havant and Waterlooville on Easter Monday (3pm).

With just one point separating the two sides, Bognor know that two wins from two will seal the title and promotion to Conference South.

Howell, however, is not looking that far ahead and putting all his focus into tomorrow's fixture.

He told the Post: "Harlow will be tough game. They are a big physical side. They will be two big games but these are the type of games that everyone wants to be involved in.

"We didn't think we would be where we are now at the start of the season so we are just going to go out there and enjoy it."

One thing that is certain for Howell's side is that they will cheered on home and away over the weekend in large numbers.

He added: "It's been difficult to prepare for as we are working on Harlow. Until that game

is done we won't talk about Havant.

"We will try and take one game at a time. We will try and get three points tomorrow then turn things around for Monday.

"We are just focusing on getting the result against Harlow and then move on."

After a slight wobble against Enfield a fortnight ago, the Rocks returned to form with a 4-0 win over AFC Sudbury on the road.

Jimmy Muitt stole the headlines with a hat-trick with the returning Darren Budd rounding off the scoring.

Howell said: "Any time you go away from home and win 4-0 you will be pleased.

"I'm not ecstatic, though, as I felt we could have scored a few more goals. But winning 4-0 away from home, I can't complain too much."

That win means that anticipation for the Easter fixtures in Bognor has reached fever pitch, with big crowds expected for both games.

With a local derby on the bank holiday, up to 2,000 are expected at Havant on Monday.

Howell said: "A big crowd always helps and I've no doubt that a few neutrals will be looking at how we all we are doing.

"In terms of Havant, every team has weaknesses - they haven't got many and a lot more strengths than weaknesses but that's the same with us.

"If we win all our games we will win the league, it's quite simple."

Muitt meets Howell's challenge IF AT first you don't succeed...

Being a striker is a difficult occupation.

One minute you are the hero being adored by all; the next a villain for failing to convert a flurry of chances.

But, after a spell as the latter, Rocks frontman Jimmy Muitt, pictured right, showed that while form may be temporary, no amount of time off the scoresheet could put him off doing what he does best.

After struggling in front of goal in recent months, the former Brighton youngster has netted four goals in the last three games.

That includes a well-taken hat-trick in Saturday's 4-0 win at AFC Sudbury.

Manager Jamie Howell was full of praise for the 21-year-old, who has worked hard to come back from a knee injury which ruled him out for most of last term.

He said: "I've been speaking to Jimmy about it [not scoring goals] and challenging him to increase his goal tally.

"He's been working on it and he's come good. Like a lot of strikers, once he gets one then the confidence comes.

"We saw that at Sudbury. Now he looks like a really good player and we're seeing the benefits on the pitch."

I'M WRITING this from Italy where I've been for the last week for work.

Being away means that I missed the match against AFC Sudbury, which obviously wasn't ideal. But it was something I had to do.

It's been a bit of a Catch 22 situation for me.

With the timing of the trip at this time of the season I knew it was not ideal.

But my job as a teacher, a job where I have just been promoted, meant that when the school trip came round, I couldn't really say no.

Against Sudbury I knew beforehand, though, that Dylan would be probably back at left back so I could go away knowing I didn't leave a weakened side.

We were travelling through France on Saturday when the game kicked off but I was checking on the progress on Twitter.

My battery was a little low so I didn't check in until 20 minutes after kick-off.

But when I saw we were two up and they were down to ten men I knew that the job was done.

Being out here has meant that I have missed training in the week.

But I have been doing a fair bit to keep in shape.

I've been getting up earlier than normal to make sure I do what I have to do before the kids get up, whether it is hitting the gym or going for a run.

I'm due back on Saturday morning and due to get to the ground for 1.30pm, just in time for the Harlow game.

Jamie is waiting to hear from me on the day to see if I can be available for the team.

If we hit traffic then it may be a bit of a squeeze but likewise we may make a bit of time if the traffic is not too bad.

We all know that Harlow is a tough game.

We got beat quite comfortably at their place but, I think being at home, we are better than anyone.

We know as a squad that we can beat anyone in our league at home.

We know that if we get three points then we can go to the Hawks and win the league there.

On a personal level for me playing Havant is always the biggest game of the season, partly because their ground is about 25 seconds from my front door.

A lot of friends and family are Havant and Waterlooville fans so for those reasons the game would always matter that's before you add in the fact that is it effectively a title decider.

Regardless of what happens with us against Harlow, games like that are why we play football.

These are the big games that everyone wants to be involved in.

Regardless, I will stick to my routine which I do before every 3pm kick-off.

I'll get up, take the dog for a walk, maybe go for a light jog and then have breakfast while watching Soccer AM. Then after a light lunch I will go down to the ground and just be itching to get out there.

Even while being in Italy, I have managed to stay in touch with the lads, either by text or over Facetime, particularly those I travel with to games.

We all know what we need to do but we are not feeling the pressure at all.

That will be on Havant as everyone said they will win the league.

With the budget we have, and the small squad, we overachieve every year.

I'm looking at us going into both games knowing that while on paper they may look tough but knowing that, with the way we are playing, we can get six points.

Being out here I have had a lot of support from the kids, who are really interested and getting a lot of information on how Bognor are doing.

They are the ones telling me that they don't want a team that's buying their way to success to win.

Yes, it's a big game and it's a derby - but at the end of the day it's 11 versus 11 and then we go from there.
