Town drivers 'need A27 say' MOTORISTS from Bognor Regis need to be considered in future plans for the A27, a meeting has decided.

THe members of the joint western Arun area committee agreed a working party with representatives from the area was required to reflect the road's importance to the town.

Chairman Cllr Anne Rapnik said the new group would cover the A27's Arun length and would link with a group

for the Chichester area which is being established by the county council's leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith.

England to improve the A27 bypass around Chichester because of the amount of opposition to the scheme.

Committee members had called at Wednesday's meeting for the views of drivers from Bognor Regis to be taken more into consideration than they had been when the original ideas for an A27 bypass were being considered last year.

Just one exhibition was staged in the town last August - and that was only

arranged at the last minute.

Town resident Steve Goodheart had urged the committee to become involved with Cllr Goldsmith's efforts and to provide details of the outcomes of the future discussions.

But Cllr Jackie Pendleton, an Arun councillor for Middleton, said she feared any further effort by the county council would be wasted.

Station work gets started A £2M project to renovate Bognor Regis railway station is getting underway.

THe major scheme will see the historic building completely refurbished to make the most of its elegant heritage features.

THe barrier between the concourse and the trains will be replaced by one which matches the designs of the 1902 original.

But it is believed the Station Bookshop, which forms part of the barrier, is closing tomorrow to enable the work to take place.

It is due to re-open temporarily in the former cafe on the concourse in June while work is carried out on its new location in the current ticket office on the opposite side of the concourse.

THis will leave passengers without anywhere in the station to buy papers, magazines, sweets and soft drinks in the short term.

Ornate windows, intricate ceiling mouldings and original parquet floors in the station will be retained and restored.

In keeping with the theme, the windows which are blocked will be re-opened to allow more light on to the concourse, which will be revitalised using lightercoloured materials.

Southern Rail's project manager, Paul Best, said: "We are pleased that this work will be getting underway soon using funding from Network Rail, the Rail Heritage Partnership and the National Station Improvement Programme.

"Our priority is to improve the passenger experience and this project will definitely deliver this."

In line with the results of a passenger survey, an indoor waiting room will be created. THere will be two cafes. One will open out on to Station Square.

Passengers will also benefit from an improved ticket office and seating, new ticket vending machines and refurbished toilets in the Grade II-listed building.

A new cashpoint machine, enhanced CCTV and signage, better station lighting, visitor information leaflets and an online information terminal will also be installed.

Cllr Gillian Brown, Arun District Council's leader, said: "THree years ago, we started talking to Southern Rail about improving the public realm on the station forecourt at Station Square.

"From those discussions, the refurbishment of the station has been brought forward.

"All this investment will improve the quality and attractiveness of this part of the town and complement the public realm improvements that have already taken place.

"THis transformation will be a fantastic result for everyone."

As reported, the station's taxi drivers had to leave their office on the concourse at the end of last month after 70 years.

THe taxi rank at the station is still in use but it is unclear if the Bognor Regis Taxi Association will be able to return to the building when the works are completed.

Its intended premises, close to the new bookstall, could be let out by Southern Rail to another tenant.

EXTRA signs to protect Aldwick's residents from fraudsters are to be bought by parish councillors.

Aldwick Parish Council agreed on Monday to purchase 12 additional 'No Cold Calling' signs to be installed in roads around the area.

THe areas identified as needing the signs are: both ends of Pryors Lane, at the entrance to Bell Court, four in Elbridge Crescent, one at the entrance to Valentines Gardens, one at Stoney Stile Lane, two at Pryors Green and one for each end of Willowhale Green.

THe total cost of the signs is £210.

THe councillors also agreed to authorise their amenities committee to investigate the need for further 'No Cold Calling' signs in other roads in the parish.

Any residents' group which believes a sign is needed for its area should contact the council's clerk, Sue Batey, on 01243 263330 to request one to be installed.

Some of the original signs put up to deter doorstep sellers were taken down and not replaced when new streetlights were installed several years ago as part of a county-wide programme.

Housing campaign notices are revived CAMPAIGN signs from the first battle to stop homes on a Pagham field have been put up again for the latest fight.

Hundreds of motorists daily pass the protest messages put outside her family home on Pagham Road once more by Sally Arnhold just a few hundred metres from the proposed housing site in Hook Lane.

Developer Hallam Land Management wants to build up to 300 homes on the land, which stretches between the two roads.

Mrs Arnhold, pictured below, hopes the resolve of residents which helped to defeat the first development attempt 17 years ago will prevail again.

She said: “We are going to have to stick our heels in the ground and fight the housing again.

“I remember the first campaign very well. We were successful then. Arun District Council spent a significant amount of money to get a London lawyer to fight it.

“We got the public inquiry into the plans held in Pagham Village Hall because so many people were interested.

"THe plans were turned down on many points. Why are we looking at hundreds of houses again now?

"As far as I am concerned, nothing has changed.

If anything, it has got worse.

"THe roads have become worse. THe infrastructure hasn't changed. THere is no new surgery or schools.

“Hook Lane has come in as the last of the three major sites in Pagham for housing.

Everyone is fighting the first two and I'm worried Hook Lane will go below the radar."

It was in 1999 that Prowting Projects applied to build 175 homes on the Hook Lane field.

A large campaign by residents began and they were backed by the district council. Arun failed to decide the plans within the legal deadline and Prowting appealed to the government for planning permission. But a government planning inspector rejected the scheme in September, 2000 - nine months after the inquiry.

Mrs Arnhold was the only member of the public at Tuesday's meeting of Pagham Parish Council's planning committee as it decided its view about the proposals.

But some 350 letters of objection to the scheme had been submitted to Arun by the end of last week.

Committee chairman Cllr David Huntley said the council would use the previous appeal decision as the basis for its current objection.

“We will do our best to fight this plan. Greenfield sites should not be

developed. THe housing should go on brownfield areas like Ford Airfield,” he said.

Cllr Mike Cole said: “Now the A27 bypass has been scrapped, if they do build this amount of houses the traffic problems will be absolutely horrendous.

“It will be like pulling the plug out of the bath without having anywhere for the water to go.”

Parish council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said the risk of flooding was another reason to object to the housing.

“THe south of Hook Lane has been very badly flooded. I should think the resident of Mayfield Close, Stonehill Crescent and the roads around there are going to be very worried about development there," he added.

THe parish council is using evidence from highways and wildlife experts to compile its official response to the Hook Lane proposals and those for Sefter Road – 250 houses - and Summer Lane - 400 homes - before Arun's deadline for comments on April 1.

Booze control measure to come into force in town

A new public spaces protection order will take effect on April 10 to make it easier for the police and certain Arun District Council officers to take alcohol away from those who are behaving anti-socially.

THey will also be able to disperse groups of people who are being disruptive. THe powers will apply to a designated area, shown above, which stretches from Pagham to Elmer and up to North Bersted - but excludes the new housing on the outskirts, as the Post revealed last year. THe order covers Littlehampton as well.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, who heads Arun's community services, said: "By targeting known problem areas within designated areas of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis identified in the order, we believe we can combat the problems we have seen with groups congregating to drink alcohol and intimidating others trying to use these public areas.

"THe power to disperse people causing anti-social behaviour is vital to disrupting and restoring order in areas used by the public.

"However, it must be stressed that

the power is discretionary, so alcohol will only be taken away from those people causing a problem."

THe order replaces a previous provision which had been in place for many years but had become outdated.

THe new order has an extra power to disperse anti-social groups out of the area whether or not they are drinking alcohol.

THe measures were backed by Arun councillors after a threemonth consultation last summer showed the majority of those who responded were in favour by 257-9 for the dispersal power and 250-14 to confiscate alcohol.

THe order requires those asked to hand over any open container of alcohol and to comply with a request to open liquids to identify any alcohol.

Anyone who does not comply with a request and/or to leave an area when directed to do so might face arrest or a fine of up to £1,000.

THe enforcement is part of a strategy which involves several agencies to tackle and reduce the amount of street drinking in areas of the district and the effect it has on others. THe strategy also involves working alongside others to ensure residents receive specialist treatment and support for their addictions.

"Working with other services, Arun will continue to support anyone wishing to tackle alcohol abuse," added Cllr Wotherspoon.

` Homeless cash EXTRA funds to help those at risk of being homeless have been agreed

by Arun district councillors.

THey have confirmed a decision earlier this year to add up to £80,000 to their £360,000 budget to pay for B&B accommodation.

THis will have to find temporary rooms for those who meet the council's criteria but face living on the streets.

Cllr Trevor Bence, who controls Arun's housing service, said: "Fluctuations in demand for B&B accommodation, and the individual circumstances involved, can provide challenges in budgeting for support of this service."

Levels of homelessness in the district show no overall signs of falling in line with national trends.

As reported, Arun is looking at seeing if other temporary accommodation can be provided for those who are homeless.

` Market to close A LONG-RUNNING market on Bognor Regis seafront is to close at the end of this month.

THe stalls on the Place St Maur will not be returning in April.

THe decision to pull out was made by the company which had run the market in recent years, Bray Associates.

THe market was held every Saturday during the year, weather permitting. Extra sessions took place on Tuesdays, and then THursdays, during the summer.

A new market is planned for 2018.

Call to take action about shoplifting

THe statistics from Sussex Police reveal they were made aware of 208 incidents of the theft of goods in the area last year.

A further 104 shoplifting crimes were reported in the 12 months in Hotham, with 30 more in Orchard and 29 in Pevensey.

THe need for the police to ensure stealing from shop shelves was tackled with more importance was demanded by a town centre shopowner this week.

Paul Wells told Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne the quantity of thefts of items was a big problem for businesses around the town.

He said: "Shoplifting has a serious and rising impact in Bognor. I know that because I have got a shop and I know the issues.

"Sussex Police seem to be missing a trick here. THey are being very reactive but, in terms of being proactive and stopping a crime before it happens, I'm not seeing that happen.

"I'm seeing more crimes closed because there is not enough time.

"Every crime should be investigated because everybody who has a crime committed against them is a victim and

they deserve to be looked after.

"I've still got CCTV images sitting in my drawer at work because the police have not picked them up."

Individual police officers were not to blame, he said, because more funding from central government was needed to enable them to provide a better service, he said.

He doubted the value of the Business Wardens who have been patrolling the town centre for the past 12 months.

Mr Wells, who owns the Unique Promotions business in London Road, made his comments at Monday's annual meeting of Bognor Regis electors.

Mrs Bourne said she was aware of the effect of thefts on shops owners.

"Business crime is not victimless just because it's a shop because, often with small and medium-sized enterprises, it can make a difference on their bottom line. So, it has an impact.

"Shoplifting is serious. I would say to business owners: 'Report it'. Give me the evidence and I will go to Sussex Police to say it is a real problem and to get it sorted. If I don't have the evidence, I can't say that to the Chief Constable."

Sussex Police had an officer dedicated to business crime, she said, because the impact of such incidents was recognised.

THe Business Wardens had been shown to reduce crime 'quite significantly', she added, and they were a unique two-year project jointly funded by the government and Southern Co-operative.

Charity well is repaired and put back after attempt to steal cash CALLOUS yobs put a Bognor Regis charity venture out of action for a week.

THe would-be thieves attacked the wishing well on the seafront installed

by Rotarians to help people around the town.

THey caused so much damage the stainless steel cone into which donations are dropped had be repaired. THat work has been completed and the wishing well was re-opened on Tuesday.

Bognor Hotham Rotary club member Peter Elliott said: "THe wishing well being out of action has deprived people around the town of donations.

"It's the fact that people could stoop so low and try to steal money meant to help

others that is so annoying.

"But the well worked well when we first installed it and we will perserve with it."

THe well was unveiled last July in a joint venture between the town's two Rotary clubs. It is sited on the promenade opposite Walton Avenue.

Some £250 had been donated in its first three months, said Mr Elliott, before winter caused an expected drop in the loose change given by generous strollers.

But at 10.30pm on March 6 some people were spotted by a neighbour trying to steal from the well. His shout saw them run away before they could take the small amount of cash inside.

A stronger padlock has been installed.

Demands for rethink over hotel scheme in town hall

Running to save lives TWO runners from around Bognor Regis are tackling a marathon next month to help victims of cardiac arrests.

Tone Zone club members Claire Baker and Paul Wells, pictured below, are joining thousands of others in the Brighton Marathon. THey are raising sponsorship for Bognor Regis Lions Club's appeal to install a defibrillator in the town centre.

THe club has £1,000 to buy the life-saving equipment but needs about the same amount again to pay for the installation outside Boots the chemist in the London Road precinct.

Felpham resident Claire, 45, said: "We have put in a good amount of training. It's tough - our longest run is 22 miles this weekend from Littlehampton to Brighton Marina - but we have put the hours in and we will be ready on race day."

Last year's Brighton run was the first marathon for the running friends. Claire completed the 26.2 miles in five hours and a minute.

Felpham county councillor Graham Jones said: "THis is not just about Chichester because the A27 is such an important strategic link across West Sussex for all of those who live on the coast, including within the Arun district.

"I'm disappointed Highways England dropped the improvements at Chichester. We have waited far too long for long for something to happen on the A27. THis is a big blow to all those concerned with the economic viability of this region."

Hampshire seemed to be treated very well for roads spending but West Sussex was like a 'poor relation', he said.

Cllr Paul English, one of Felpham's district councillors, said: "THe whole situation with Chichester was massively bodged."

But he said he feared for the future of the plans to improve the A27 at Arundel.

"It's not just Arundel that has got issues with that bypass. It's virtually the whole district. THat bypass is going to be our lifeline for the future," he added.

Town council called upon to speak up in regeneration plan

TOWN councillors at the annual electors' meeting on Monday were told they had to play a leading role in the town's regeneration.

Resident Rachel Searle said: “THis is a crucial time for Bognor Regis. THis is an opportunity we are not going to get again and we need to get it right.

“THe town council should have a role in looking at what is proposed.”

National organisations like the Tate art gallery would only use venues which they judged to be of sufficiently high quality for their touring exhibitions, she warned.

Cllr Adam Cunard (I, Pevensey) said: “We have not formed an opinion on it yet. We opposed the Sir Richard Hotham Project on various grounds but we have not agreed to support the (latest) plans and we want more information.

“We are pleased to see something come forward but the town council has not agreed a policy on it yet.”

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said he had called for Arun to get all the groups who had put forward regeneration ideas together again to see what was the best proposal for Bognor Regis.

“A sandy beach is a good thing to get visitors here. One of the plans had a sandy beach and the ability to let families with prams and pushchairs – and people with disabilities - get to the beach,” she said.

Cllr Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) said the winter gardens and linear park ideas from Arun were artist's illustrations of a wishlist.

“It is up to developers to come forward to see if they can make the schemes work for themselves and Arun,” he said.

It was important for the town council to say what it wanted to see for the town before developers got involved to begin to finalise the plans.

Paul Wells said: “THe plans are just a masterplan and concepts. A cynic would say they have come out just before the county council elections.

“It will be developer-led and we will have to wait and see what comes forward in the future.”

Town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon said the town council's neighbourhood plan, backed by residents in 2015, stated elements it would like to see in any redevelopment of the sites.

Homes' plans move closer SITES just a mile apart are set to be earmarked for 4,000 homes.

THe land in Pagham and North Bersted is due to be included in the latest version of Arun District Council's local plan next Wednesday.

Arun's special full council meeting is being recommended to set aside the locations off Summer Lane, Hook Lane and Sefter Road in Pagham and North Bersted's Chalcraft Lane for 3,700 dwellings.

Other sites around the district - like Barnham, Eastergate and Westergate (3,000 homes) and Littlehampton West Bank (1,000 dwellings) - have also been proposed for large-scale housing.

THis follows a vote at the council's local plan sub-committee last THursday.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) told the sub-committee: "We are now being faced with a situation where, as the crow flies, within a mile of each other, we will have 2,500 homes in Chalcraft Lane and 1,200 homes in Pagham.

"THat is going to have a devastating impact on residents who live in the area.

THere are huge problems getting in and out of Bognor Regis at the moment.

"I can't accept this on behalf of the people I represent. I attended two public meetings about this in Pagham with over 300 people. THey were the biggest public meetings I have witnessed and there is huge concern about what they are being faced with on farmland."

"I can see nothing in this plan to benefit Bognor Regis or Littlehampton."

THe local plan's target of 919 homes a year until 2031 was a staggering number,

he said.

But Cllr Dudley Wensley (C, Angmering) said: "THere are thousands of people who need a roof over their heads. THe problem we have got, in a sense, is that this area is a jolly nice place to live and a lot of people want to live here.

"THe local plan is about what is best for Arun and the people of Arun. It is not a party political matter."

Council head of planning policy and strategic development Neil Crowther said "THe local plan allocates a number of strategic site allocations across the district which will provide an important contribution to the future housing supply, and provide a contribution to the unmet housing needs which exist within the wider housing market.

"Development should be distributed across the district at sustainable locations. It shall be focused on the two main towns and their associated hinterlands in order to support their role as the two main service, employment, retail and social centres."

THe developers would be expected to provide land for services such as schools and doctors, he said. But he said the provision of the facilities would be a matter for the appropriate authorities.

Cllr Roger Elkins (C, Ferring) called for careful planning to ensure the disruption caused by the scale of building work did not disrupt residents' lives too much.

"Some of the highways issues certainly are key because people see how that impacts on their neighbourhoods," he added.

Tributes to head TRIBUTES have been paid to a former headteacher of Felpham Community College.

Robin Moggridge died on March 3 after he had suffered from cancer for some time.

THe college's current headteacher, Mark Anstiss, said in a letter to parents and carers: "Robin was headteacher at Felpham from 1987 until 2003 when he retired, although he continued to then work in education for a number of years afterwards.

"With fierce intelligence and commitment, Robin led the school through a period of significant

change in British education from the end of the 1980s.

"We send our condolences to his wife, Jane, and children, Cate and Richard."

THe news of Mr Moggridge's passing has been greeted with sadness on social media.

Matt Wye wrote: "Sad news, he gave me a massive chance to turn my life around and he was very patient with me throughout my school time!"

Angela Vanessa Giles commented: "So sad, a very good headteacher."

Jenny-lee Hardman wrote: "Saddened to hear this. THoughts are with his family."

THe town council has owned the Picturedrome for more than five years and bought the building when its previous owner put forward plans for flats on part of the site.

Councillors agreed about two years ago to add a single storey extension on to the rear of the historic building, which dates from 1886, to accommodate an extra auditorium with 114 seats.

THis was confirmed after a review and planning permission and listed building consent for the work was granted by Arun District Council in July, 2015.

But no work has taken place while the talks with the neighbour have continued.

THe town council took out a six-figure loan to pay for the work last year and has been paying interest on the advance.

Written details about the repayments will be given to councillors by Cllr Dillon after questions about the amount were raised at the meeting.

DELAYED plans to extend the Picturedrome in Bognor Regis should be finally underway soon.

Town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon told a meeting on Monday the town council hoped to get work started on a fourth screen at the town centre picture house.

Building work was due to have begun last year but Cllr Dillon said at Monday's meeting of the town's electors the £850,000 scheme had been held up because of talks with one of the neighbours of the cinema at the junction of Longford Road and Linden Road. Tributes are paid to Dennis

` Missing persons' scheme launched HOTEL owners around Bognor Regis have been urged to join a scheme to help to trace people who have been reported as missing.

THe Hotel Watch initiative was launched this week by the West Sussex Missing Persons' Team.

It is hoped this will become an information sharing platform with hotels across East and West Sussex.

Sussex Police's West Sussex division has a dedicated missing persons' team which also deals with absentees and child sexual exploitation cases.

Working with an established multiagency safeguarding hub, it helps identify and protect those who repeatedly run away or go missing.

Inspector Roy Hodder, who leads the team, said: "THe valuable information shared by hotels can help us respond quickly to situations where vulnerable people may be at risk and also to reduce crime.

"Sometimes, that's all its takes. A little piece of information can help us build the bigger picture."

Women given advice on pay

HELP to bridge the pay gap between women and men was on offer at a Bognor Regis event.

A high-powered panel gave examples to the audience about how women can negotiate better pay. Among full-time workers in West Sussex, women earn about a quarter, or ÂŁ138 a week, less then men.

Business mentor Julia Macfarlane was one of the panellists at last Saturday's session. She said: "THe easy ways to negotiate a pay rise are to be an employee in a large organisation where pay rises are calculated in a structured manner and automatically increased on an annual basis, join a union, negotiate your pay and regular pay rises after you have been offered the job, and earn or apply for promotion in this company or another."

THe other ways of getting a bigger salary included seeking an annual appraisal,

ensuring any extra duties are reflected in higher wages and finding out the level of wages in competing companies.

Julia said: "Keep a CV up to date. Perhaps set a date each year to review and update it.

"Have an increase in mind - what is the maximum you think your employer will pay and what is the minimum you'll accept and ask for an annual review of your position and performance.

"Always be polite. You are asking, not demanding."

Her other panellists included the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, Baroness Smith, and Janet Henny, Unite's south east region women and equalities officer.

THe Women's Forum of the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton constituency's Labour Party held the session at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road.

A WELL-KNOWN figure around Bognor Regis has passed away.

Dennis Mann helped with the Scouts and to organise the annual carnival as well as being a keen photographer.

He died on March 5 aged 91. His funeral will held at 2.45pm next Friday at Chichester Crematorium.

One of his sons, Graham, said: "He was a truly great family man and will be sadly missed."

Dennis had served in the Army during the Second World War and spent time in THe Royal Kent Regiment and the Derbyshire Yeomanry. Most of his time was spent in Egypt as a mechanic/tank driver.

He had been an AA patrolman for 25 years and began in a time when they rode motorbikes and sidecars. One of his duties was to maintain the AA Box on the A29 at Whiteways roundabout and to make sure the lamp inside the box was lit every night.

On leaving the AA, Dennis joined the West Sussex Fire Brigade as a mobile mechanic maintaining the fire appliances.

His time with the brigade saw him take part in a charity run with a vintage fire engine from John O'Groats to Land's End. Dennis is best known for his work with the 1st Bersted Scout Group. He ran its parascending team to take them from being land Scouts to air scouts.

As a member of Bognor Regis Lions Club, Dennis was on the carnival committee and took part in Christmas collections around the area.

and, once retired, began to concentrate on doing wedding photography and portrait work and even doing the odd job for the local press.

"He was a very keen member of Bognor Camera Club and took a great interest in doing competition work," said Graham.

Dennis was married to the late Betty for 61 years and is survived by four children, eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Terns show benefit of volunteers' efforts to maintain natural site SANDWICH terns are a sign of the success of a management deal for Pagham Harbour which has reached its fifth anniversary.

THe small birds nested successfully on the area's Tern Island last year for only the second time.

Most of the harbour's little tern population also nested there as a sign of the success of the RSPB's stewardship of the internationally important nature reserve.

Reserve warden Roy Newnham said: "Breeding shore birds have benefited from our management. THe little tern colony has been a particular success story and, despite storms hampering other south coast sites, Pagham Harbour has become a haven for the UK's smallest tern."

THe charity took over the management of most of the 616 hectare site from West Sussex County Council in early 2012 on a ten-year service level agreement. THe council continues to help fund the site's running costs.

Having the charity in charge had seen some significant highlights, Mr Newnham said, as well as the success with breeding shore birds.

"Since 2012, we have reviewed our schools programme and have been committed to delivering education in line with the current curriculum. We are offering packages for primary schools right through to A-levels and even work with universities and the Field Studies Council. Our events programme has grown dramatically, with over 1,600 people attending events during 2015 -16, ranging from wildlife photography

workshops and astronomy nights to a variety of guided walks and full family events programme during school holidays.

"Our outreach programme has developed and grown, too, engaging with more than 1,500 children from schools and youth groups over the past two years."

THe RSPB relies on 80-plus volunteers to help it fulfil a variety of work in the harbour and keep it in good natural shape and a suitable place for visitors to enjoy.

Mr Newnham said: "Some run the visitor centre. Some do wildlife surveys (water voles, reptiles, birds etc) and some join the wardens on a Monday and Wednesday to carry out conservation work. THis is everything from reed cutting, clearing vegetation from shingle islands to encourage ground nesting sea birds, to putting up fencing and clearing brambles to allow other woodland plants to flourish.

"Others lead guided walks and others help out with events. THere is pretty much a role for anyone that is enthusiastic and has time to spare.

"Some volunteers will do a morning a month, others a couple of days a week.

"THey work it around their lifestyle and we are keen that it works for them as well as us and they enjoy their experience, feeling it is a worthwhile way to spend time."

Planned projects include a new toilet block, enlarging the nature reserve's 'discovery area' and enhancing it with a larger pond and shelter. A replacement for the Ferry Hide will also be installed.

Pagham Harbour is recognised as an important area of intertidal saltmarsh

and mudflats with wet grassland, farmland, scrub, copses, lagoons, reedbeds and shingle beaches. Its wet grassland provides winter food at high tide for wildfowl such as widgeon, snipe and brent geese.

Autumn and winter brings a waterbird spectacle, with up to 20,000 ducks, geese and waders feeding and roosting across the reserve.

A big and sheltered inlet, that fills and empties with each tide, its importance as a site for breeding shorebirds such as ringed plovers and oystercatchers, as well as litle terns, was recognised as far back as 1954 when it was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

THis was followed by the awarding of the Ramsar status as a wetland of international importance in 1988 as well as its designation as a Special Protection Area the same year.

Spring and autumn bird migrations include osprey, marsh harrier, honey buzzard, hobby and Montagu's harrier.

THose who stop briefly include redstart, wheatear, whinchat, ring ousel, pied flycatcher and occasional red backed shrike. Waders include curlew, sandpiper, little stint, wood sandpiper and little ringed plover.

As well as birds, other wildlife includes purple hairstreak butterfly, Childing pink, water voles and numerous species of dragonflies.

All of these attract some 250,000 visitors a year - many to the centre in Sidlesham - where the Friends of Pagham Harbour are based and who enjoyed a summer barbecue last year to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

While the victims helped one man, the other is believed to have attempted to remove the cards from handbags or vehicles.

One incident took place at 1.10pm in the Halfords car park off Rowan Way. Another occurred at 1.55pm in Wessex Way. THe others were in Littlehampton and Worthing.

Investigator Daniel Turk said: "We have linked these four incidents so far and are appealing for anyone who may have seen the suspects or their vehicles. THe suspects are described as eastern Europeans, with foreign accents.

"We are urging the public to take sensible precautions when helping others in public places. Never leave your bag on a shopping trolley unattended and ensure the bag is zipped up.

"When putting shopping away in the boot of your vehicle, always keep your handbag or wallet with you and, if you are distracted for even a moment while putting shopping away, keep handbags with you or lock them in the vehicle before speaking to or helping anyone."

Jennie's mission to keep Bognor Regis laughing

APRIL is set to be an exciting month for Felpham mum-of-three Jennie Cooper as she sees the opening night of her comedy club take place.

Jennie, 43, has set up a brand new night of stand-up comedy to be held at THe George Inn in Felpham on the first Friday of every month, commencing April 7.

THere has been plenty of interest in Jennie’s venture, The Laughing George Comedy Club, already, with the first event becoming a sell-out show. With a strong line-up of comedy stars that includes Stephen Carlin, Helen Bauer and Geoff Whiting, Jennie is extremely excited about the club’s debut.

However, she admitted that she did not think the first performance would garner so much interest. She said: “I truly did not expect it to sell out after only three weeks after the introduction of the idea.”

Jennie was inspired to venture into the world of comedy after organising a successful charity comedy night four years ago at the now-closed Jack Rabbits Slims. Her interest in comedy was further encouraged when she attended a comedy club in Arundel last year and considered how it would fare in her hometown.

Since arriving in the area 25 years ago, Jennie said she could not recall a regular comedy club ever existing in such a singular venue.

Jennie felt that this kind of entertainment could be just what Bognor Regis needed.

She said: “I believe there is a place for

comedy everywhere. People have such stressful lives these days. What better way is there to end the week than laughing?

“Our nearest regular comedy clubs are Portsmouth and Brighton. I think Bognor needs more night life and choice for people of all ages and comedy appeals to all demographics.”

Jennie has mainly worked alone on this project. However, she was grateful for the support she had received from others involved, such as Lesley, the landlady of THe George Inn, who she said welcomed the idea wholeheartedly.

Although the opening night is already a sell-out, Jennie hopes that people continued to support the venture so that it can carry on in the future. Line-ups that she’s booked for upcoming months include the likes of Jeremy O'Donnell, Iszi Lawrence, Marc Jennings and Ben Roberts.

Jennie is keen that the Laughing George becomes a staple of entertainment in Felpham.

She said: “My main hope is that people will continue to enjoy and support it, and that it becomes an established part of Bognor’s varied night life.

"Provided the ticket sales continue to cover the costs of the high quality comedians, I will endeavour to continue running the club for as long as possible.”

State of town play area is condemned URGENT action is needed to improve a rundown Bognor Regis play area, town councillors have demanded.

THey said the Hothamton site was a disgrace. Cllr Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said: "One of the play area's gates has been missing for months, if not years. Repairs have been made to the boundary wall but they are not high enough to stop dogs getting in.

"THe situation is a real shame because this is the most well used play area in the district, certainly this side of the River Arun.

"It's the town centre children who are being short-changed. THis is an absolute scandal. We need the town council to take this up with Arun District Council (which owns the site) because the town council is responsible for our residents in this area.

"Other play areas have had work done to them - but not this one."

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) also told Bognor Regis Town Council's latest meeting: "Play areas are like public toilets in that Arun is assessing their future and there could be the chance for the town council to take it on.

"We need to keep a watching brief on what happens with this. I would want to see some additional equipment for it. Of all the play areas in around the town, this one is neglected," he said.

He said later: "It's got some quite nice features but it needs some good TLC. My concern is that, with the regeneration ideas for this area, no money will be spent on it because it's going to be changed anyway.

Any development, though, will not be for two or three years.

"Hopefully, a play area will be included in the new scheme but, in the meantime, the current one is looking sad."

THe use of the Hothamton site for play dates back to 1966. It was around the mid-80s the current play area was created between the car park and the Sunken Gardens alongside Steyne Street.

As reported, Arun's latest regeneration masterplan for Bognor Regis will see the site redeveloped. THe initial proposals state a children's play space or adventure playground will be a possible feature of the linear park being considered.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "Our parks team has a programme of improvements lined up for the Hothamton play area, which includes cleaning the equipment, refurbishment of the surfacing, new fencing and gates and some new planting.

"As part of the new greenspace management contract, a dedicated team of gardeners will be tending to the gardens and play area. So, the public is set to see progress taking place very soon."

` Invitation to take part in Downs walk WALKERS should lace up their boots to take part in what is reputed to be the most beautiful short walk in the South Downs National Park.

THe Joadian Way Ramblette will take place on April 8 to mark the 64th anniversary of South Downs philosopher and writer CEM Joad (1891-1953), who became famous in the wartime Brains Trust.

Starting from Amberley Station at 11am, the walk will end at South Stoke where Joad wrote many of his books in the forties.

Ideal team design homes for big show CHICHESTER College students are working alongside Closs & Hamblin (C&H) to create impressive showhomes for the Ideal Home Show that will be taking place later this month.

Ambitious art and design students, pictured below, were approached by representatives of two of the show's organisers, Barclays and Media 10, to design the rooms for two fully built houses.

Both buildings will be open for visitors of the show to explore and were required to showcase different styles of interior design.

Post Newspapers have teamed up with the organisers of the ever-popular show to offer some lucky readers the chance to admire their skills for free in our fantastic competition - see above right for details.

THe students began designing concepts

for the show in January and their final designs were selected this month.

Last week, students from the college contacted home and haberdashery store C&H in North Street, Chichester, to supply them with curtains for the homes.

Linda Coote, from C&H, worked alongside lecturer Maria Smith to select the best quality and most stylish curtains, poles and blinds needed to complement the students' designs.

Linda had only four days to get everything ready but thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

She said: "It was very exciting to be involved, especially as we were working alongside the students.

"THis is a great opportunity for all of us to show what our community can do."

THe two homes being designed are very different in style. One is a thatched

cottage and the other a three-storey apartment bulding. THis meant the students had to create concepts for ten rooms.

Linda is providing the materials for the inside of the thatched cottage for which the students have designed a modern interior.

She spent her time carefully selecting fabrics of a variety of colours, and praised the students' creativity.

She said: "We love the creative designs that we've seen."

It's the first time in the show's history, which dates back to 1908, that the show homes are being designed by college students. However, this hasn't perturbed the students who have embraced the project.

Jessica Kendall and Chloe Davis worked together to create a modern, Scandanavian-style apartment.

Jessica said: "It has been a big learning curve for us but it has given us a great insight into designing a home."

THey faced competition from others when they presented their designs. Chloe said: "I didn't expect our design would be chosen as everyone's apartments looked really strong.

"I'm really excited about the show nervous but excited!"

THis excitement was echoed by Julie Kapsalis, vice-principal of the college.

She said: "Part of what makes Chichester College special are the experiences that we are able to open up to our students and we are delighted to have been given

Tourism boost TOURISM has a bright year ahead in West Sussex.

Up to 55 of the area's leading attractions handed out thousands of leaflets and swopped information at an annual event in Bognor Regis.

THe West Sussex leaflet exchange in Butlin's was held as the facilities and venues get ready for the coming summer.

Organiser Dr Andy Clegg said the signs were good for a bumper six months to come.

"THere's a lot of positive feeling about tourism. You can tell that from the real buzz there is here.

"We don't know what the value of the pound will be in the summer but I think we will see staycations doing very well again. People will start to see it is cheaper to holiday in this country," he said.

"When you look at what is here, why would you want to go anywhere else? We have heritage, arts, culture, activities, food and the South Downs and the sea. How could anyone want any more?"

His optimism was summed up by the success of attracting £50,000 from both Chichester Business Improvement District and Chichester District Council for an officer to run Visit Chichester.

"I'm been running it for five years on top of my day job and, hopefully, we will get somebody in place whose job it is to run the organisation," he said.

Last Wednesday's leaflet exchange proved the value of the long-running occasion in the age of social media and the internet.

Dr Clegg said: "THere is still a real need for printed material. People can put it in their bags, take it home to read or scribble on it.

"We are a long way from events like this becoming old hat. THere is also the fact it is a major networking event."

Angela Shaw, a director of Chichester

Harbour Water Tours, said: "We have been coming to the leaflet exchange for many years. I've given out a lot of leaflets but it is becoming less important because so much is being done on the internet.

"THat said, I've spent 50 per cent of my time meeting with my colleagues, networking and exchanging leaflets, which is important to our business. It's nice to meet face-to-face with people I have spoken to."

Butlin's donated the hire of its Shoreline Conference Centre for the exchange and also had a presence among the attractions.

Nigel Sinon, the company's operations manager for guest services, said: "THis seems busier than last year and there's a lot of positive feeling.

"It's good to see some new businesses opening. THat's brilliant for us. THey are something else to tell our visitors.

"THere's plenty on site for them to do but it's nice to have new things they can go out to as well."

He said Butlin's was looking forward to the coming holiday season.

"We've got a new swimming pool coming, a new auditorium coming and a fish and chip shop which has cost £1m. Our entertainment is 85 per cent new as well. THe better we do, the more the town thrives," he said.

Town council projects officer Sheila Hodgson was busy handing out guides and maps with her colleague, Kirsten Fitzpatrick.

She said: "We must have given out 2,500 of our leaflets. It's important to be here.

"It helps to raise the town's profile and it highlights the extensive range of free family events we have like the Funshine Days and the Drive THrough Time motor gala. It's one of the most extensive programmes in this area."

Other attractions present included Bignor Roman Villa, Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and Amberley Museum.

` New plans for town railway station work MINOR changes and additions to the £2m scheme to improve Bognor Regis railway station have been revealed by Govia THameslink Railway.

THe train operator is seeking listed building consent from Arun District Council to revise the waiting room access, change the toilets' entrance and create a shelter for train despatch staff.

It also wants to move the K6 red telephone box on the concourse, carry out limited repairs and cleaning of the worst affected areas of brickwork and keep the dividing screen between the booking hall and one of the retail units.

A statement from GTR says: "THese works are proposed to assist with and enhance the operational and functional use of the station and are expected to have a positive impact on the setting of the building."

THe Edwardian station is a Grade IIlisted building. Consent for the overall scheme was given by Arun last year.

HOLIDAY fun is guaranteed in Aldwick again this year.

THe parish councillors have agreed to book 24 Play Ranger sessions for the May half-term and summer holidays.

THis follows the success of the events in recent years.

THe events will take place at West Park and Avisford Park with four in half-term and 20 in the summer break.

Sue Batey, the parish council's clerk, told councillors the total fee for the events would be £6,600. THis was a ten per cent rise needed to employ extra staff to cope with 100-plus children a time.

Dan helps council to win awards hat-trick f The college's drama students

Drama students take to the stage SIXTH form drama students at Felpham Community College will be performing at Chichester Festival THeatre next week.

THe Year 12 and 13 pupils will take to the stage on Tuesday with #YOLO in a prestigious joint production with the National THeatre, which is open to the public. THe show follows two sell-out performances at the college where the audience included a National THeatre director.

One of the performers, Shannon Noble, 17, said: "To do something in conjunction with the National THeatre is a real honour."

Fellow cast member, Dionne Harrison, 16, said: "Performing at

Chichester Festival THeatre will be daunting but exhilarating."

THe initiative has been arranged through the National THeatre Connections project by the college's curriculum leader in drama, Nicola Coney.

She said: "Our students have worked incredibly hard on this play and it has been a brilliant experience for them." #YOLO (You Only Live Once) shows Jack on A-level results day when he receives a revelation about his health.

Other performers are: Sophia Cobby, Maddi Denby, Joe Greenaway, Morgan Jones, Molly Light, Ed Searle, Matt Silcock and Charlotte Walters.

SUCCESS came in threes for Arun District Council employees at a national awards ceremony.

THe local authority's local land charges team scooped the hat-trick to celebrate its work carrying out the land and property searches needed for conveyancing transactions in England and Wales.

Arun won the customer satisfaction award, was highly commended for the best customer experience and one of the team members - Dan Carman - came second in the local land charges officer of the year category.

Dan said: "I am privileged to be part of such a strong team who focus on providing excellent customer service."

THe recognition came in all the categories in which Arun was nominated.

THis was the second year in a row in which Arun's employees had received recognition in the countrywide competition. THe latest awards were presented in Bristol at a ceremony hosted by TV presenter Kaye Adams.

Cllr Ricky Bower is in charge of the council's planning services. He said: "To finish first and highly commended in such a prestigious national award ceremony is a great achievement and testament of the hard work and commitment shown by the council's local land charges team in offering customers an excellent level of customer service."

Mum's the word for a better life THE TIME is 6.20pm and it's still light outside. Yay!!

I love this time of year when you can almost smell spring! THe trees are beginning to blossom and the daffodils are everywhere. Just a few more weeks and the clocks go forward.

THen it will be even lighter and we will be able to come out of hibernation. No more excuses for not exercising in the evening and no need to draw the curtains and curl up at 5pm! Energy is naturally higher as the days become longer, and if you start exercising outside you will feel so much better, with more energy and motivation.

Why not take up running with your mum! Or swimming, or rowing? Anything that means you can spend time together. My mum will be laughing when she reads this, but I am always nagging her to increase her exercise. So mum, for Mother's Day, I am coming to get you! Get your trainers at the ready…

Mothering Sunday to me always gives you that feeling of spring. Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family.

Centuries ago, it was considered important for people to return to their home church once a year.

So each year, in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their 'mother' church - the main church or cathedral of the area.

Inevitably, the return to the 'mother' church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away returned home.

(It was quite common in those days for children to leave home for work once they were ten years old.)

And most historians think that it was the return to the 'mother' church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family.

As they walked along the country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or to give to their mother as a small gift. And that’s really where the tradition started.

But how important is it to have a good relationship with your mother? Apparently, a close mother-son

relationship is good for a boy's mental health. Boys who are close to their mothers tend not to buy into hyper-masculine stereotypes.

THey don't believe, for instance, that you have to always act tough, go it alone or fight to prove their manhood every time they are challenged. Boys who have great relationships with their mums are more grounded, confident and remain more emotionally open.

THis also stands them in good stead for better quality friendships, being more ‘popular’, but also suffering from far less anxiety and depression than their more macho peers.

According to experts, the mother-daughter relationship is one of the most powerful bonds in the world, for better or for worse. It sets the stage for all other future relationships, self-esteem and mental health.

Apparently, no other childhood experience is as compelling as a young girl's relationship with her mother. Each of us takes in at a cellular level how our mother feels about being female, what she believes about her body, how she takes care of her health, and what she believes is possible in life.

How a woman sees herself, how she is in her adult relationships with partners, and how she mothers her own children, is profoundly influenced by her relationship with her mother.

While most five-year-old girls love their mothers with an unshakeable conviction, it's often a different story by the time they reach adolescence. THe

once-adored woman who rarely put a foot wrong is suddenly always doing embarrassing things.

I think I can safely say I am in that category now!

Having a daughter who is 16, and a son who is just about to turn 15, I have turned into the ultimate ‘embarrassing’ mother! Hopefully this is temporary…

Whatever your relationship with your mother, cherish it, nurture it and appreciate it.

Held in the impressive surroundings of the Chichester Assembly room, the photography group have been working hard to create a feast for the eyes.

THeir 2017 exhibition includes traditional landscapes, documentary photography, collages, monochrome images and intriguing plant close-up studies.

THe Focus Group was founded in 2006 when four landscape photographers had travelled from the south of England to explore

the photographic possibilities of western Scotland. THey decided that they could work together and mount regular exhibitions of their work. Two further members were subsequently invited to join the group making up what the group is now.

THe Focus Group now spends two weeks together each year.

THis allows them to work closely together, sharing experiences and ideas, to develop new and experimental approaches and also to plan future projects and develop a programme of exhibition.

THeir annual exhibition at the Chichester Assembly Rooms is always popular and is attended by around 1,000 photographers and visitors from around the area.

THe exhibition is free to enter and runs from 9am to 4.30pm.

So now spring is beginning to hold sway, it is to Lidl that I turned in my quest for wine deals and noted that one needs to plumb the depths of Lidl's wine cellar to unearth some good value quality wines.

As part of Lidl's naturally light wines' season with wines of lower alcohol content than the average bottle, the Cuvée Royale 2015 Côtes de Gascogne priced at £5.99 at 11 per cent alcohol volume has fewer calories per glass, but furnishes a surprising depth of flavour.

Peach-scented accompanied by herby, citrus aromas with melon to the fore - this wine's punchy acidity enables a fresh, crisp character on the finish.

For the same £5.99 outlay, I was able to procure a Nobre Colheita Alvarinho Vinho Verde in a sleek receptacle enclosing a wine of tropical fruit and fresh lemons enveloped in a delectably

refreshing slightly spritzy package.

Tingling acidity contributes to a wine of note and one well worth your attention!

For a further pound expended, you can avail yourself of a 2015 Domaine Saint-Germain Bourgogne Chardonnay with its rich nose of ripe citrus fruits and hazelnut - a very

pleasant Chardonnay with a creamy finish and a persistence of taste.

For a further two pounds invested you can obtain the Viento de Otoño Godello, a grape variety on the up of north-western Spain provenance with Chardonnay characteristics.

THis wine is deliciously fruity oozing peach and tropical fruit flavours and

should not disappoint!

As I transferred my attention to red wines, I espied an Autentica Reserva Rioja of 2012 vintage sporting a good nose and priced at £6 99 - a pleasing prospect indeed!

Hints of tobacco and leather permeate this Rioja with spicy cherry notes and a wine of some merit!

For a miserly £5.99, the Château Caillavet Noble Année 2010 Côtes de Bordeaux is somewhat of a bargain being smooth and dry with hints of blackberry and vanilla.

At this price a veritable crowdpleaser and, by the time you read this, we no longer need to beware the Ides of March!

Roasted Pork belly.

Apple,Broad bean and Pea and Pea shoot salad.

serves: 4

Method

INGREDIENTS • 1.50 kg pork belly • 60 ml oil, for rubbing • 2 tbs cumin seeds, toasted • 10 ml sea salt, for rubbing • 200 g Broad bean And pea salad: fresh peas, blanched • 4 courgettes, cut into thin ribbons and blanched • 1 apple • 6 spring onions, sliced • 1 tsp grated lime zest • 4 tbs lemon juice • 125 ml extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tbs fresh mint • 1 punnet tendril pea shoots.

• 5 ml salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 220°C. With the point of a sharp knife, score the pork skin at 1,5cm intervals.

Lay the belly on a roasting rack. Rub all over with oil, cumin seeds and salt.

Roast for 30 minutes. Turn heat down to 200°C and roast for another 30 minutes or until pork is cooked to your liking.

Salad.

Blanch broad beans,peas, chill and combine all ingredients (mint, lime zest, lemon juice, pea shoots and toss together.

Slice pork and serve with pea salad.

Lord of the Aldwick Manor played major role William Fletcher's private garden has become Hotham Park NUMEROUS times I mention the name William Fletcher in a variety of contexts, therefore, I thought it would be an idea to give you more information on this gentleman who, for over 40 years, resided at what is now Hotham Park House.

William Holland Ballett Fletcher, pictured below right, was born on October 29, 1852, in Broadwater, West Sussex, and was only 11 years old when his father died. With the guidance of his mother, he went on to St John’s College in Cambridge from where, in 1875, he obtained his BA and an MA in 1879.

During his period at Cambridge, he met and in 1875 married his wife, Agnes Caroline Nicholls, and it was on the occasion of his wedding that he found a cork oak at Goodwood.

He planted it in the grounds of his home to commemorate this marriage. THe cork oak can still be seen today in Hotham Park – if you know where to find it.

In the mid 1870s, William and Agnes lived in Worthing, where their two children were born - John in 1879 and their second son, Edward, in 1881 but sadly he died nine months later.

During his time at Worthing he was elected to West Sussex County Council in 1893 and between 1894 and 1896 he became the Mayor

of Worthing. He was also elected to the Bench of the Justice of the Peace for West Sussex.

On the death of his mother in 1899, the family moved into the house known at that time as Bersted Lodge, today Hotham Park House. William immediately changed the house’s name to Aldwick Manor, as he had also inherited the Lordship of the Manor of Aldwick. When looking through historical documents and seeing the name ‘Aldwick Manor’, we can today be forgiven for dismissing this as being situated elsewhere in the town.

In 1906, William was co-opted as chairman of the Bognor Urban District Council and in 1910 he became a county alderman.

He insisted on his anonymity for much of his charity work. His work for various communities and his public service was not exploited. Also, he never consented to be interviewed about his life or work.

THeir son, John, was developing his life and attended the same college as his father and grandfather at St John’s in Cambridge where he also obtained his MA before he became a barrister in 1902. THis time for the Fletchers was a good and happy period of their lives.

shone like silver. Swiss lace and blue and silver brocade curtained the windows.

Dinner was eaten in the glow of 12-branched candelabra and every Sunday each servant was given a basket of fruit.’ For a man who was involved with numerous organisations, groups and held various offices, it appeared he was apparently courteous but very shy, so much so he preferred not to be spoken to and would slip past staff if he met them in the house.

THis happy period was interrupted in 1914 by the First World War and John joined the armed forces and became a Lieutenant of the 7th Battalion of the London Regiment. Sadly, he was killed on May 13, 1915, and is buried in the town cemetery of Bethune in France. THe death of their son was to greatly affect William and Agnes and they were soon both seen as having a reclusive lifestyle.

Another aspect of the life of William Fletcher that remains with us today is the planting and maintenance of plants, trees and shrubs in his grounds. He worked closely with Kew Gardens and at one period the plantings were compared with Kew as being such an outstanding collection of species.

Each year, the woodland around the house became carpeted with primroses and bluebells between the small mossy paths. THe area known by many people as the boating lake was his pond and where he could be seen regularly standing at the side feeding his huge goldfish with bread. He also kept a large container of corn near the front lawn from where he would feed the rooks, which the staff referred to as ‘Mr. Fletcher’s canaries.’

He was viewed as a gentleman with his Sherlock Holmes hat, stick and his Airedale terrier when walking through his grounds. He had strong links with North Mundham and its church because his brother, John, was the vicar there, and there were many mentions of William in parish magazines when he was involved in either providing cash or attending

functions to raise money for the parish.

Agnes became well known in her own right, for her unusual interest in reptiles, amphibians and rodents. She was a life fellow of the Zoological Society of London. Her large collection of snakes made her legendary.

THere are many stories recalling the ‘lady with the snakes’ and even recently, while talking to a local resident, I was told some of the stories of snakes being ‘lost’ around the house.

As the years passed, old age began to take its toll and in 1934, when he was in his 80s, William had to retire from some of the positions he held due to increasing deafness.

Agnes died in 1939, at the age of 84, and within two years, in 1941, William also died, thus ending a Fletcher house association that had lasted over 80 years, since his father took over the house and completing more than 40 years for William.

THeir deaths finished the private ownership of the house and park we know today. On William’s death, his monies were divided between three hospitals to leave no money for a grave or permanent memorial to this man.

It was not until 1959 his name reappears when the Bognor Regis County Secondary School was renamed the William Fletcher School. Sadly, this did not last long as, by 1967, the amalgamation of schools resulted in the Bognor Regis Comprehensive School.

Today, the only reminders are street names Fletcher Way and Fletcher Close, which we must assume were named after William Fletcher.

It was not until the late 1970s that discussions, plans and money were gathered together by members of the Bognor Regis Local History Society to enable a headstone for his grave at North Mundham to be erected, on May 10, 1980, by the society. Again, the local history society became involved in 2014, when it arranged for his grave to be cleaned to maintain it as a suitable memorial.

Community News & Views WASPI women are wanted around Bognor Regis to fight for their pensions.

Jill Robertson said she was keen to form a South Coast branch of Women Against State Pension Inequality to enable others who had been short-changed to demand improvements to their financial position.

Jill, pictured below, said: "No letter, no notice, no pension sums up the situation of women born in the 1950s.

"Women who are affected are either struggling to get their finances in order because they are on their own or they are not sharing their retirement with their husband as they thought they were going to do."

North Bersted resident Jill, 62, has been forced to watch the government push her state pension age back from 60 to 62 and now 65-and-threequarters. She has recently moved from the Horsham area where she worked as a fitness coach until she was made redundant in December, 2015.

"It was then I started looking seriously at my pension. I expected to get it at 62-and-a-half, which meant I would have been receiving it about now, only to find it was another three years away."

She said none of the women affected by the delay to their pensions were told by the government in spite of paying National Insurance in return for retirement age of 60. Only articles in the national press highlighted the rapid increase in their eligible age to receive the payouts.

"If you talk to people, they don't know anything about it. It's sad that a lot of people don't understand what has happened. Many others have just got on with their lives. But it's an awful shame they are going to get their pension many years later than they thought," she said.

"THe later pension age also affects things like the concessionary bus pass and free dental care."

Jill attended last Wednesday's march through London held by WASPI. Some 7,000 protestors took part and listened to speeches from MPs and Unison union general secretary Dave Prentis.

THose on the march included members of the Solent group with which Jill has made contact. But she is keen to fill in the gap of WASPI branches along the coast.

"It was fantastic being on the march." Jill said. "It was a very inspiring day."

WASPI used the occasion to inform the government it had begun to consider legal action to redress the injustices suffered by women because of the pension changes. Anyone who would to like a Bognor Regis group should email: solentwaspi@gmail.com.

WORKING mum Clare Tivey was one of the West Sussex apprentices who graduated to celebrate their successes.

She was among about 65 of the advanced and higher apprentices gathered in their gowns and mortarboards for the ceremony at Chichester Cathedral, pictured below.

Mother-of-two Clare, who completed a level three in management at Chichester College, took her apprenticeship when she was the personal assistant to the county chief fire officer.

A year after she completed her qualification, she was promoted to be the personal assistant to the county council's leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith.

Clare said she was aged 31 and had a son, aged three, and a five-year-old daughter when she was put forward for the suggested career move.

"I had excellent support from the council and the college. It gave me a lot more confidence and I was able to apply those skills when I was applying for promotion.

"I would encourage any working mum out there -

don't put things off, really go for it. It is hard work but you definitely get out what you put in."

THe graduation event was organised by West Sussex County Council and the Federation of Small Businesses with support from other councils and apprenticeship training providers.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, a county council cabinet member, said: "I am always amazed to see the incredible range of qualifications that people can gain through doing an apprenticeship.

"At this year's graduation, they ranged from social care and business innovation to upholstery and electrotechnical systems."

Chichester College assistant principal Helen Loftus said: "We have 2,000 apprentice programmes at any one time across a huge range of disciplines and levels.

"THey are a fantastic way for people - whatever their age - to gain important qualifications, alongside valuable hands-on experience in their chosen career."

Dear Sir, THe importance of new sections being added to the A27 is not lost on the many, all of whom have different views as to where the route should go.

THe improvements will add so much, not only a better quality of life for all the local communities and road users in general, but great opportunities that would be open for everyone - it's a no-brainer.

New housing is planned in many local areas, which will obviously bring an increase in population along with growing demand from the business sector for more development and the ever-increasing yearround tourism traffic.

With all of this happening, not to build the infrastructure required for a balanced future is surely an act of criminal

stupidity?

Decisions need to, and will be, made! THe potential A27 routes - whether north or south of Chichester - through ancient woods or green fields of Arundel - do need to be built!

As a resident of Bognor Regis, I would very much like to see a spokesperson from Bognor Regis on the working party that's being brought together

by Louise Goldsmith.

It would be a very positive move to get the views of the local MPs, as surely the time is right for lobbying the case for the investment to be made.

Please we can all work together to achieve an outcome that will be something for which future generations will thank us.

PAVEMENTS and footways around Bognor Regis are among those to have been improved in the past year.

A total of 11 locations have seen uneven surfaces replaced to make life easier for pedestrians and mobility scooter users.

THey are among 85 sites which West Sussex County Council has worked on since last April. Some of the schemes are taking place in the next two months to complete the £2m programme.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We are delighted the first year of our programme has been completed on time and on budget.

"Our investment has made pavements and footways in the locations we have been to smoother and safer."

THe sites concerned were: Richmond Road/Lyon Street West, Crescent Road, High Street, Lyon Street, Clarence Road, Belmont Street, Campbell Road, Queensway, Devonshire Road, Merchant Street and Den Avenue.

A further £3m will be spent on pavements in the coming year.

Dear Sir It is sad to see an independent local paper surrender its impartiality but that I fear you are in danger of doing regarding the so-called regeneration scheme unveiled by Arun which has so little regeneration as to be merely redevelopment. If fulfilled in the broad outline terms given out by Arun, this is what we get: 1 - 50 luxury flats on the Regis Centre, private developer pockets profits, council tax receipts for Arun, three-storey car park 2 - Whitbread get their hotel, they pay to build it, business rates to Arun 3 - unspecified retail/leisure, who pays to build?

4 - a 'winter garden' who pays, who maintains, and based on one in that well-known seaside metropolis...Sheffield. THis will attract visitors, more than once? No 5 - maybe an extended theatre, from the present 350 to 400 seats and studio theatre from 80 now to 150. Wow. Oh, if someone else pays, not Arun, not a private developer. I'll tell you what, it's a very low priority for trusts and foundations to fund an amateur theatre.

To date, Arun Arts appear taken in by this and, frankly, seem only interested in what's good for them, not Bognor. If money is not found, it's as we are, or may be a tarting up. With increasing age, dilapidations will worsen, and if Whitbread move to their hotel site, then the future viability of the tarted-up Alexandra must look dim.

To get a new, small theatre, too small to attract big acts etc, say £5m.

THis is cloud cuckoo.

Hothamton: 1 - 2/3 blocks of flats, 100 they say, I say more (Fitzleet has 75) 2 - Arun gets rent and council tax, plus some ground-floor retail such as a small convenience store we are told .... so business rates.

Fitzleet is 17 storeys, so if the blocks are 7-10 storeys, we might see nearer to 200 flats. Arun's leader has already said this is an opportunity for revenue to fill the hole in their funding 3 - Oh, we get a linear garden ...

Tell me, why is the Post asleep? THis tawdry scheme does diddlysquat to regenerate, no major slice of the revenue comes to regenerate our town, using the last two major publicly-owned sites in the town.

THe Sir Richard Hotham scheme is far and away superior, light years ahead, £80m of assured investment, award-winning architect (so Arun's rejection on grounds of design quality is ludicrous and stitched-up). I asked the town mayor on Monday what he thought of the quality of design of Esplanade Court on the seafront, and he said he liked it and it had won three awards - same architect as SRH and a complementary design!

Bognor will not forgive Arun, councillors or anyone else shortchanging our town at this time. And if Arun needs to use us yet again as a milch-cow to shore-up its shaky finances, then now's the time to ask,is Arun fit for purpose? I have decided to launch a new campaign re Bognor and Arun = BR EXIT Jan Cosgrove, Longford Road, Bognor Regis

VISITORS to Hotham Park in Bognor Regis have a new seat to enjoy.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust has funded the circular fixture in the park's Mary Macfie Pavilion.

THe trust's members, led by chairman Rosemary Warren, are pictured above, admiring the new seating. It was installed by Arun District Council.

A trust spokesman said: "THe seating is a welcome new addition to the park, allowing visitors to rest and take in the glorious views. THe seating was sized to allow accessibilty to all park users beneath the cover of the pavilion roof."

He thanked all those who supported the events organised by the trust throughout the year. All profit from the activities allowed the trust to continue to maintain and improve the park.

Chi prepare for a nail biting run-in PostSport after easing to a bonus point win CHI ARE facing the fight of their lives.

Rob Lawrence's side are sitting just one place and three points above the drop zone in National League THree (London and South East).

THe Blues' plight was eased last weekend when they secured a 39-15 bonus point win over Amersham & Chiltern at Oaklands Park - their first victory in four games.

But, with the sides around them also picking up points, Chi know they will need to keep on winning if they are to avoid relegation.

Next up is a tough trip to second-placed Wimbledon tomorrow (3pm) to face a team who have lost just three times all season.

Speaking after last week's match, Roger Gould, the club's press secretary, said: "Chichester made short work of obtaining the required bonus point win, scoring four tries in 30 minutes and adding another before the interval.

"But Chiltern fought back gallantly and actually won the second half 7-5.

"Chiltern are now relegated, Colchester almost sure to join them, and the third casualty is to be either Southend, Guildford

or the Blues.

"THe last four games will be nail biting."

Before the match, the club gave tribute to Mary Phillips, who had been involved at Oaklands Park for more than 40 years.

Chichester Minis, Juniors and the two 1st XVs stood together on the pitch for silence in memory of all her work for the club.

On to the match and most of the hard work was done in the first period.

Jack Bentall scored Chi's first try after latching on to a Henry Anscombe dink through. THen Chris Johnson powered over for two quick scores.

THe bonus point was secured when Sam Renwick took a quick pass from a scrum and touched down.

Amersham did get a score of their own in a rare venture out of their own half. But, just before the half time whistle, Chichester attacked in great force, the ball whistled across and the very strong Aaron Davies came racing to join the line and crashed over tackles for the fifth try.

THe visitors were a lot better in the second half. But a late second for Davies secured a comfortable 39-15 win for Chi.

IT WAS all change in the Tuesday Double In Double Out League last week as the end of the season saw everyone's favourite six-a-side 'Pete May' team knockout.

THe format is simple - start at 1001 over the best of three legs. After some good darts, Hunston Club and the Cabin Cruisers made it into the final.

Before that was played there was the matter of the consolation cup, which was contested by Old Barn Owls and Newtown Raiders - and it was the former who came out on top when Paul Van Ewijk stepped up to hit the final double.

ONE OF the world's most popular sports is looking for eager recruits from Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Formed in 2013, the Arun Volleyball Club aims to give everyone of all ages access to the game. With the adult team competing at a local and national level, those running the club have now turned their attention to youth - and are looking for eager recruits to sign up to play.

Olena Kagarova, club junior coach, said: "Our national team is retired now but we are really happy to see young potentials.

"We aim to develop volleyball skills and enter under-15 competitions in the future.

"One of the greatest joys of parenthood is watching your kids put on their uniforms and do some sport.

"Our volleyball staff will assist each athlete in developing the fundamental skills of the game through game-based drills and physical activities."

Arun Volleyball Club is committed to

driving forward the standard of volleyball and increasing public awareness of the sport.

It offers volleyball for all, for players, coaches and spectators.

As well as the junior sides, the club also has teams in the Sussex League and National League, as well as playing organised tournaments and friendly matches.

Olena said: "In further good news a good number of players are attending evening adults sessions and we aim to start playing in the Sussex League this season with both men and women's teams."

THe club sessions take place at Six Villages Sports Centre in Lime Avenue, Westergate every THursday.

From 6pm to 8pm, are the junior sessions and 8pm till 10pm is for those aged 14 and over.

THe 'Pete May' team knockout final saw the Cabin Cruisers (Andy Cooper, Jody Cooper, Rob Palmer, Rolf Huber, Pete Butcher and Terry Markey) take on the Hunston Club (Julie O'Hara, Andy Stubbs, Rob Misselbrook, Graeme Dutton, Pat O'Hara and Hayley Gatford).

Strong play from Misselbrook and a 180 from Dutton eased Hunston to a comfortable victory and with it the title.

--------------------------------------------With just one week to go before the end of the season, the ‘Benevolent Cup’ Knockout took place at the Newtown Social Club.

THe turnout was the second biggest known with 58 players in attendance, and only six short on the 2012/13 record.

THe first few rounds saw some great darts including 180s and a 17 dart leg from Richard Ragless (Squash Club), and a 180 from Rob Collins (POW 'Z').

On his way through this round, Collins managed a 15 dart leg with scores of 100, 100, 100, 60 & a 141 out-shot. Alex Norgett (Newtown Amity) also scored a 180, but lost out in round three to team mate Stuart Rose.

THe first semi-final saw Rose take on Chris Williams (QEII). Both players scored well but it was Rose who was more clinical, taking the second and final leg in 17 darts to clinch the spot in the final.

THe second semi-final was between two-time champion Collins and Lee Franklin (POW 'Z'), who had lost out in the semi-finals for the past two years.

Collins won the bull but Franklin nabbed the leg. With 139 left, Franklin stepped up, hitting treble 13, treble 20 and double top to take the lead.

He kept up the clinical shooting in the second leg to take the second final spot.

THe final started with Rose winning nearest the bull, but two scores of 81 from Franklin put him in the lead.

Rose replied - but with 60 left, his dart dropped low, hitting the treble 20 and busting his score.

Franklin took his chance and with two darts hit the double for the first leg.

Franklin then started the second leg with a 140, and hit another 140 two scores later leaving him with 161.

He stepped up and hit the treble 20 but missed the treble 17, so he went back up the top and hit another treble 20, leaving him with 24. Rose tried to respond but had too much to do.

So it was Franklin who took the leg in 14 darts, the match, and this year's Benevolent Cup Champion title for the first time.

Overachieving Chi face tough test at title-challenging Heath

TITLE outsiders Chichester City will find out if they are made of the stuff of champions tomorrow when they travel to second-place Haywards Heath Town.

Chi have been the surprise package of SCFL Premier all season. With just eight games to go, they are third, five points off the top.

While the Oaklands Park outfit have not applied for promotion to the Ryman South, Miles Rutherford's side do have an outside shot of lifting the title in just over a month's time.

But to do so they must defeat Haywards Heath at their Hanbury Park fortress tomorrow (3pm). A win would put Chi level on points with their hosts in second.

THe Lillywhites go into the match in good form defeating struggling AFC Uckfield Town 1-0 at home last weekend, Josh Clack scoring the goal.

THat was Chi's sixth win in seven, a run of form that has put Heath and league leaders Shoreham under pressure as the season draws to a close.

THe reverse fixture in November ended in a 1-1 draw, Ellis Martin getting Chi's goal.

Dragonflyers soar into final Young Lions do Pagham proud

BOGNOR'S Dragonflyers Trampolining Club continued their successful start to 2017 with a number of youngsters soaring into top-level finals.

THe National Development Competition (NDP) in Oxford was the final chance for jumpers to qualify for southern finals - and potentially represent the region nationally.

It also gave those who had already met the level to improve on their score.

By the end of the day, 12 Dragonflyers had made the grade to make the qualifiers at the end of this month. With the high standard all members have performed at so far this season, it is looking to be an exciting year for the club.

THe day began with the less experienced members of the club - with five of them competing in an NDP competition for the first time.

Mainly taking part in the NDP 1 age groups the youngsters performed some solid routines and gained some top ten finishes. Jacob Carr and Robert Cartwright finished fourth and sixth in the 9-10 years group and Daniel Boon taking sixth

(11-12 years).

With less than a year’s trampolining experience, Sian Tate did exceptionally well and narrowly missed out on the qualifying score by 0.6.

William Foden began the haul of trophy wins by taking gold in the NDP 1 13+ age group. He was followed by Manon Bailey (NDP 2, 7-8), Rosie Budge (NDP 5, 11-12) and Anya Johnston (NDP 7, 1516) who all took gold as well.

Having failed to qualify at the previous event, the pressure was on Sofija Kalnicenko.

However, she held her nerve and used this to her advantage by performing two exceptional routines in the NDP 7 11-14 age group.

She was rewarded by not only taking first place but beating the required qualification score by eight whole marks more than was needed.

Kalnicenko carried this success forward by taking gold in the Grade D event.

Silver medals were awarded to Libby Morton (NDP 7, 1114) and Izzy Hauxwell (Grade D), with Hauxwell also taking a bronze (NDP 7, 11-14).

But Chi faced perhaps their toughest test so far with the visit of fifth-place Larkhall.

After being pegged back in the second half, a frustrated Chi eventually got their just desserts when substitute Kally Ambler scored a winner as time ticked down.

THat win takes Liam Greenfield's side 12 points clear at the top after registering 14 wins from 15 games. Meanwhile, title challengers Plymouth are 13 back with four games in hand.

Chi should have been well clear against Larkhall, wasting a number of good chances.

It took 22 minutes for the persistent pressure to pay off.

THe ever-dangerous Cherelle Khassal darted clear down the right and crossed low for Charley Wilson-Blakely to divert it into the back of the net.

But, late on, Larkhall hit back and it appeared as though Greenfield's side would drop points.

THat was until, with 89 minutes on the clock, Ambler came up trumps.

Wilson-Blakely surged into the box and laid the ball square to the super-sub who flicked it home sparking a frenzy of celebrations.

Next up for Chichester City is a visit from bottom side Exeter City on Sunday at Oaklands Park (2pm).

THey will be the hosts again on THursday (8pm) when Basingstoke Ladies are the visitors.

Howell downplays home form fears as Invicta visit Nye Camp Next Game

Folkestone Invicta (H) TOMORROW | 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell is urging his table-topping side to show the Rocks faithful they are ready for the promotion push.

THe Nyewood Lane outfit host Folkestone Invicta tomorrow (3pm) in need of three points to keep up their title ambitions.

Four points from two tough away fixtures have lifted Howell's charges as just six weeks of the season remain.

But to lift the Ryman Premier Trophy, the manager knows his side must improve their performances in front of the home crowd.

THe Rocks have won just three times in the league at the self-styled Nye Camp this season, something the Bognor boys will be keen to improve on tomorrow.

Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "Our home form has not been as good as it should have been recently so we need to put in a performance.

"Folkestone will be tough. We had a hard game up there before Christmas but we were fortunate to come away with the points "THey have some good players so we need to be at our best."

Bognor go into the match on a high. A late Jimmy Wild strike was enough to ensure tenman Rocks returned from Leiston with a point.

THat was followed by a convincing 3-1 win at Burgess Hill on Tuesday with James Fraser, Ollie Pearce and Chad Field getting the goals.

With second-place Havant getting beaten

2-1 away at Harrow on Tuesday, the Rocks are currently two points clear albeit having played one more game.

Howell said: "It's been a good week. Saturday was good and Tuesday was even better "Both sides were difficult in their own ways.

Leiston is always a difficult place to go in terms of travel but also because they are a good team.

"Burgess Hill is difficult as a lot of the lads know each other and how they play so to to come away from four points is an added bonus."

If there was a negative from the past week it was the suspension of Field, who starts a three match ban after being sent off at Leiston.

THe referee claimed the dismissal was due to violent conduct, something those at Nyewood Lane disagree strongly with.

However, Howell has been boosted with the return of Sami El-Abd and Ed Sanders. He is also happy to see goals coming from all areas of the pitch.

Howell said: "We've been working hard in training for some time now on our finishing.

"Sometimes the ball just doesn't drop. THe key thing is to keep doing what you're doing.

THats been stressed to the players and it seems to be sinking in.

"Ollie has had four or five chances in recent weeks which he has not converted but he was superb on Tuesday. We need to relax and then we will be ruthless."

Rocks ready for two horse race AS THE Chelteham Festival draws to a close it seems apt to apply a horseracing metaphor to Bognor's late season charge for the title.

With just eight games to go, the Rocks are entering the final furlong in first place.

And it looks like they do so with only one other in contention - those big-spending rivals from Havant.

After the Hawks' 2-1 loss to Harrow in midweek Bognor are two points clear - a length in racing terms - but Havant still have a game in hand.

A betting man would have a tough time picking a winner from those two.

Manager Jamie Howell is clear where his focus is.

He said: "I haven't studied it in massive detail as I am solely concentrating on what we are doing.

"Focusing too much on others can sidetrack us from what we are doing and that is the most important thing.

"It is looking a little like we are in a twohorse race with Havant. What we have to make sure of is that we do not capitulate.

"THere's no reason why we would but we just need to keep focused and doing what we can do as well as we can."

IT'S BEEN a good week for us.

If I'd been offered four points at the start of it, I would have snapped anybody's hands off.

In the last week we had a derby at Burgess Hill and, before that, went up to Leiston knowing the pitch is a hellhole - and we came out of it in a good position.

While we were not at our best in either game, I think I was most pleased with how we did at Leiston.

I thought we defended really well, especially after we went down to ten men for a large part of the game.

No one in the ground thought Chad Field should have been sent off.

But to come back the way we did we was a little more pleasing than winning 3-1 against a side that had a man sent off.

Leiston are a bit of an unknown entity I think to many of us.

THey are not local to us, we do not know the players all that well and, as they have only been in the league a few years, we're just getting to know them.

When it's like that it's just a case of turning up, seeing what your man is about, winning individual battles and going forward as a team.

In terms of the sending off, the ref had a bit of shocker there.

Chad went in to challenge the goalkeeper and as he left to go back their two centre halves both kicked at him.

Chad turned round and as he did his head caught one of them.

It was not a headbutt, even the two lads from Leiston were saying 'ref you had a mare there'.

But the ref I think made a rod for his own back as he had the red card out as he walked over to Chad.

In the end we did scrap and got a late goal for the draw.

It's nice to know we have that as the old Bognor of years back would have fallen off and lost two-nil.

Even down to ten and onenil behind we knew that we needed one to get back in the

game and we knew we could do it.

THen it was on to Burgess Hill where we picked up a good win.

It was huge for Ollie to get a goal like that and credit to him for also getting an assist from a corner. For him that's magnificent.

Burgess Hill doesn't feel like a local derby for me but I know for some of the lads who live that way, like Sami and Buddy, it is.

We know that for them it is their biggest game of the season so it was great to come back with the win.

We are not in any mindset that Folkestone tomorrow will be easy. But coming off the back of a win and draw away we are in a good position and I do think we are looking good.

We were given an extra boost on Tuesday with the news that Havant had got beaten 2-1 at Harrow Borough.

I don't normally have a look at the phone to check the other results after the game.

But on Tuesday Sami was not playing and he was checking things in the dressing room when Harrow got the equaliser.

We were in the shower when the second went in and it was a really good feeling to hear we were two points clear.

I felt like shouting 'get in there!'

As for the title race, you can't help but look ahead.

I like to look at it in spells and they have three tough away games while we have three tough home games.

If we take seven or nine points and they take four or five then we will be in the driving seat.

THe next few games we will also know where we are in terms of depth.

It's well known that we have a small squad and depth has been something we have struggled with.

But now we have a few options, players like Parsons, Jimmy Wild and Budd who can offer something else off the bench.

Barring injuries and, if we keep everyone fit, we will have a chance to have a real go at it.
