Group aims for pier pressure SCORES of members have signed up to a new group formed to help safeguard Bognor Regis Pier.

THe Pier Watch organisation held its second coffee morning on Wednesday and took its membership closer to 100.

One of its founders, Jan Malpas, said: "We believe there is the potential to have about 700 members.

"It's not so much about the £1 membership fee. It's the clout that that

number of people can give us when we are talking to funders, councillors and other people who are interested in what we are trying to achieve.

"If we get the message round, we can get the right result. Our aim is to preserve the Grade II listed building which is Bognor Regis Pier.

"THe way we are going to achieve that is through local support, through talking to Arun District Council, Bognor Regis

Town Council, Bognor Pier Leisure Ltd and working with the people in the Bognor Pier Trust.

"We and the trust have the some goal - to restore the pier to community ownership. We are going at that in different ways but we want to achieve the same result."

Pier Watch was formed last month from the former Friends of Bognor Regis Pier. THis has ended after the news last

October that the pier's owner, John Ayers, no longer wants to back a bid by the pier trust for up to £5m of heritage lottery funding.

Mr Ayers has owned the pier since 1996 and has undertaken works to maintain the historic structure and invested in its facilities to ensure it remains a popular destination.

NEW student accommodation in a former Bognor Regis convent has been approved.

Proposals by Genesis Town Planning for 25 students to live in Villa Maria have been given planning permission

by Arun District Council.

Twelve letters of objection to the change of use of the property in Campbell Road were received by the council and three in support.

Planning officer Simon Davis says in his report: "THere is no doubt that the change of occupancy from nuns to students will represent a change to the character of the building.

"However, it does not automatically follow that the new occupiers will be noisier and that the character of the area will change as a result of the approval of this planning application."

Campbell Road is ideally suited for students, says Mr Davis, being close to the town centre and the university's campus.

A single-storey side extension proposed as part of the plans and a rear standalone building were both acceptable and would not harm the views of the neighbours. THeir concerns about parking were also unfounded, he adds.

Houses on former farm are approved PROTESTORS have lost their fight against housing on a former farm in Middleton.

THe 200-plus objectors to the West Sussex County Council scheme for 13 houses on the land to the west of Yapton Road had their view narrowly rejected by councillors.

THe members of Arun District Council's development control committee agreed by 8-5 votes, with one abstention, to allow the development to go ahead.

Several councillors echoed the concerns of the opponents, pictured above, by highlighting the need to protect three trees at the site subject to preservation orders.

Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C, Middleton) said: “THis development is not within the built up area. It is using up open rural land which should be kept as open rural land and used for rural purposes.

“THe tree T4 remains at risk of damage to its roots. I can't believe any construction of the access road will not damage those roots when the access is directly between two trees with tree preservation orders."

Her fellow Middleton councillor Barbara Oakley(C) said: “THere is a lack of evidence about vehicle movements to this site.

THirteen houses equal 26 car movements a day and that could be 52 residents' journeys a day plus visitors, service vehicles and tradesmen.”

Arun planning officer Juan Baeza said the

protection of the trees was fully covered by three conditions to be imposed with the planning permission.

THe location was outside the built-up area but Arun's lack of housing land supply – with just two years' worth against the government's demand for five – meant it could be developed.

Middleton Parish Council chairman Cllr Shirley Haywood told the committee its members opposed the housing and worried about its impact on the nearby Comet Corner road junction.

“A development of this size will not generate a huge flow of traffic,” she said.

“But the county council do not give adequate weight to the cumulative impact of such small developments on existing problems on inadequate country roads.”

Middleton resident Louise Alger said: “THe protected trees provide a huge amenity to the community being sited next to a well-used public footpath."

But Damien Sullivan, the county council's planning agent, said: “All the protected trees are being retained.”

County council highways consultant Roger Harper said: “THis development is predicted to generate one extra vehicle every five minutes. It is not considered to have any significant impact on the highway network.”

CRICKET fans donated well over £1,000 within days of a fundraising appeal being launched to rebuild arson-hit Aldwick Cricket Club.

Devastated club members took to www. crowdfunder.co.uk to seek backing to rise from the ashes of the destruction caused by the firebug. THe result was almost £1,500 pledged in just two days to the delight of the shocked cricketers as they seek to rebuild their summer sporting passion.

Ian Guppy, of the club, said on the fundraising website: "We will be back. It may take time but we will be back and we need your help.

"In the early hours of the morning of January 30, our clubhouse was destroyed in an arson attack.

"Nothing is salvageable. We have lost everything inside the building. Fridges, tables, chairs, benches, a fully working kitchen and thousands of pounds of cricketing equipment.

"From the outside, this rundown building was probably an eyesore but inside it gave so many people so many memories.

"Hundreds of local youngsters would have walked out of the pavilion over the years donning the whites of Aldwick Cricket Club.

"We will strive to be back. We have been inundated with support and offers of help and we are truly grateful to all of the local and more far-reaching community for every message received."

THe aim of the fundraising appeal, which will run until February 27, is to help to replace equipment for the club's newlyformed Colts section that began to grow last summer and looked at becoming stronger this year.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the alarm was raised just before 2am on Monday. Two fire crews were sent to the Brooks Lane site in Bognor Regis. THey spent until 4.36am tackling the flames.

"THe building ended up being 100 per cent damaged by the fire. It is believed to have been of deliberate ignition," she said.

Two further fire crews, from Arundel and Littlehampton, were sent to Hotham Park at 3.15am to another arson attack on the cafe at its boating lake. It was 60 per cent destroyed by the fire before it was fully out at 4.53am.

A Hotham Park Heritage Trust spokesman said: "We are saddened by the senseless destruction of this building in the park. Everything in the park is for the benefit of the residents of Bognor Regis and this act only serves to spoil the enjoyment of visitors to the park."

Police are not linking the two blazes.

HOPES for an £80m regeneration scheme for Bognor Regis have been decisively rejected.

Councillors turned the latest ambitious proposals by the Sir Richard Hotham Project with an overwhelming 11-1 vote.

THe decision on Wednesday was the second time in a year Arun District Council's development control committee had refused planning permission for the project's ideas for the Regis Centre, Hothamton and former Esplanade THeatre sites around the town.

THe committee agreed the scheme's design was unsuitable and it involved the loss of too many parking spaces.

Its members stated: "THe positive aspects of the proposed development are not considered to outweigh the failure of the development to demonstrate sufficient design excellence having regard to the local character and qualities of the area and the aspirations for the regeneration of the seafront and the town as a whole.

"THe scheme fails to demonstrate an acceptable level of parking provision to meet the needs of the development and the wider role of the town as a tourist destination."

After the meeting, an Arun spokeswoman said: "THe Sir Richard Hotham Project has the right of appeal against this decision and submit a revised proposal.

"As the landowner, the district council are considering their own ideas for regeneration of the two sites and this will be discussed at the Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee at the end of February. And the minutes of that committee are due to be considered at full council in March. No further decisions will be made until after that meeting."

THomas Elliott, who leads the Sir Richard Hotham Project, declined to comment as he left the meeting after the debate of just over an hour.

THe latest ideas from the project involved the creation of a 1,100-seat theatre, 48-bedroom hotel and two shops - with 477 parking spaces - on the Hothamton car park off Queensway.

the Regis Centre whose seafront location would be filled with eight retail units, an area for the Arun Arts charity which runs the current centre, 192 flats, nearly 2,000sq m of leisure and indoor leisure facilities and a 64-bedroom hotel. A total of 335 parking spaces will be created A 200-cover restaurant would be built on the former Esplanade THeatre site and the current skatepark moved to the promenade immediately west of the pier.

Cllr Phil Woodall, who chairs Bognor Regis Town Council's planning and licensing committee, said it had objected to the plans.

"A fresh start is required and we would urge the applicant to withdraw the scheme. THis part of the seafront has such a great part to contribute to Bognor Regis' identity as a 21st century seaside town and Design South East is quoted as saying the plans are flawed."

Hampton Smith Lambert director Neil Partlett, who has worked with the Sir Richard Hotham Project on the designs, said: "THis is a transformational proposal you have in front of you and the opportunity to make a very real difference to the retail and leisure experience in Bognor Regis town centre."

But committee member Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W), said: "I am just not happy with this. We can't afford to lose round about 200 spaces for the public to come and use in Bognor Regis.

"I am also worried about the sheer density of building 192 flats on the Regis Centre site. It's far too many. I have severe problems with the theatre. I believe it will become a white elephant in a few years."

Cllr Elaine Stainton (C, Felpham W) said: "I don't like the design of anything that has been put in front of us."

Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: "I can't for the life of me see how they can say a theatre of that size can be proposed for Bognor Regis.

"THe potential draw of people like the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moscow State Circus is frankly pie in the sky. THese big companies will not come on the basis of this theatre."

` Tourism South East: a correction WE HAVE been asked to make clear that the front page article published in last week's Bognor Regis Post was based on a working document for internal use and sent in error to the newspaper by the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

THe project informed the newspaper the comments were made by Nigel Smith, the chief executive of Tourism South East, backing the project's regeneration scheme when they were, in fact, a draft produced by an officer with the project, and not Mr Smith, and forwarded by mistake.

THe Post published the comments in good faith but we apologise for, unknowingly, attributing comments to Mr Smith which he did not make.

He has also asked the newspaper to state that the phrase 'Bring It On' in the article was the newspaper's interpretation of his support for the scheme and not words he used in his genuine letter, which was forwarded to the newspaper this week by the project after it discovered the error.

THe official letter offered support to the planned scheme. "More specifically, TSE believes that the experience from other similar coastal resorts shows that the proposal for development of the arts and cultual facilities, conferencing and serviced accommodation via the new theatre proposal has a sound basis," Mr Smith has written.

"In recent years, successful culturally-led regeneration has been evident in coastal locations such as Crosby, Folkestone, Margate, Blackpool and Lincolnshire."

` Showroom plans DETAILED plans for showrooms at a North Bersted site have been sent to Arun District Council for approval.

Hanbury Properties has asked the council to back its proposals for two showrooms and retail units at Oldlands Farm in Steyning Way. Both showrooms will have floorspace of 929sq m. THe site also contains a proposed bulky goods outlet of 4,366sq m, a garden centre and three trade units.

` Plan for further homes in Pagham OUTLINE plans for 300 more homes in Pagham have been revealed by developers.

Hallam Land Management wants to develop farmland north of Hook Lane with the major estate.

THe company has asked Arun District Council to back the principle of residential development on the site for the housing. It also wants an 80-bed care home, and a two-form entry primary school among up to 4,000sq m of non-residential uses such as clinics and day centres on the 17.5hectare site.

A statement by Owen Jones, the company's planning agent, says: "Houses will range from two to five bedrooms and will include both shared ownership and rented accommodation."

A two-form entry school has been proposed in response to a request from the local education authority.

If the authority decides to build the school, the houses will total 230. If not, the number will reach 300.

Harbour Road resident Steve Paige was one of the first to object to the scheme.

He has told Arun: "THis is agricultural land and should be retained as such since good land for agriculture is vital in today's world.

"THere aren't many jobs around here so the extra people will have to travel for work.

"Given that the roads are very busy as it is today, the additional vehicles will mean chaos and delays. THis will become far too dangerous.

"Plus the fact that Hook Lane and field have been known to flood."

Pagham council objects to homes DETAILED objections are being lined up by Pagham's councillors to a plan for hundreds of homes.

THe parish council members are compiling their official protest to the scheme by Taylor Wimpey for land north of Sefter Road.

THey agreed at their planning committee meeting on Tuesday to object to the intended scheme but will decide the specific reasons later this month.

THe housebuilder has asked for outline planning approval for up to 250 homes, a replacement Scout hut and land for a 210-pupil primary school.

Parish council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said: “THe atmosphere in Pagham is becoming quite toxic to these large developments.

“We see no community benefits. We see no economic benefits. We see plenty of things which are of serious impact to the community.”

THe scheme is one of three large-scale housing proposals, which total 950 dwellings, submitted by developers to Arun District Council.

Pagham Parish Council's view - backed by 320 letters of objection by Tuesday - will be considered by Arun.

“We will be submitting a satisfactory, very well thought out professional objection. THat will be the same for all three sites," said Cllr Radmall.

He warned the amount of housing in the Taylor Wimpey scheme was likely to rise because Arun would want the land earmarked for the school to become housing if the local education authority decided against building one.

“THe numbers are likely to change because Arun foresee the scenario that, if schools are not needed by the local education authority, this will be supplemented by significantly more housing," said Cllr Radmall.

Committee member Cllr Phil Higson said the housing would damage the area's two biggest industries - farming and tourism.

“I certainly don't see this as being a benefit to tourism,” he said. “When you approach Pagham, you will see miles and miles of new houses and not the farmland and the little village, quaint atmosphere we have at the moment.”

THe Taylor Wimpey proposal involves 13.3 hectares of land. David Scane, an assistant director at the company's PR consultancy, Curtin and Company, told the committee many of the proposed houses would be affordable properties and the company would also build a hut for the 1st Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts.

A quarter of the site would be left as public open space and a play area provided. Flood protection would be created for a one in 100 year storm.

“We do appreciate we are one of many developers coming to speak to you and many things are being offered by other developers as well,” he said.

Alan Privett, of the PAGAM action group, said the plans were very complex for residents to understand. "People are being asked to look through documents such as the transport assessment which is 729 pages long. I have been working until midnight/1am going through them – and more documents are arriving all the time.”

More housing campaigners join protests against estates MORE than 100 further protesters have signed up to the campaign against more housing in Pagham.

THe third coffee morning and letterwriting session held by the PAGAM group attracted the biggest attendance of the series.

Last Saturday's event was held just after a third major housing scheme for the parish was formally revealed. THis takes the number of homes proposed to be built on three sites in the area to 950 as well as 130 already approved.

Gill Homer, one of PAGAM's founders, said: "We are determined to carry on. Today has been very

productive. People have been so much more knowledgeable about what it is going on than they have in the past."

THose who went along to Pagham United Reformed Church included Swandene resident Gill Montgomery.

THe 72-year-old has lived in Pagham for three years. She said: "I lived in Chichester when it flooded and I know how much water will be diverted down the Pagham Rife if that happens again.

"THere have been so many floods in recent winters around the country that it has always been shown to be a stupid idea to build houses where they are at risk like that."

MP defends school funds

Mr Gibb, the secretary of state for school standards, said the allocation of money would see their slice increase by as much as 7.5 per cent.

THe government is conducting the second consultation about its proposed formula. THe deadline for public comments is March 22.

"THe new national funding formula will ensure that every school receives a fair share of the national schools budget," said Mr Gibb, Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

"It matches funding to need and it recognises educational disadvantage.

"THe new funding formula is designed to ensure funding is properly matched to need, using up-to-date data, so that children who face entrenched barriers to their education receive the support and teaching they need."

As reported, Felpham Community College headteacher Mark Anstiss has warned serious cutbacks could be forced on its activities because the available funding was failing to match the surge in costs caused by rising wages and National Insurance contributions, the Apprenticeship Levy and general inflation.

But Mr Gibb said school funding within Bognor Regis and Littlehampton would increase by 3.5 per cent using the proposed formula.

"Of the 19 primary schools in the constituency, 15 will see a rise in funding under the national funding formula and four will see a small fall.

"All three secondary schools will see an increase in their funding as a result of the new, fairer funding formula.

"Once the formula is fully implemented, the Regis School would receive a 7.5 per cent increase. In year one, the increase would amount to some 2.9 per cent.

"Felpham Community College would see its funding rise by 5.3 per cent once the new formula is fully implemented. In year one, it would rise by 2.9 per cent. THe Littlehampton Academy's funding would rise by 2.3 per cent."

Across West Sussex, the new formula will increase funding for schools by £14.6m based on the 2016/17 figures. THe amount of money they receive will rise to £428.3m.

Mr Gibb said the government recognised schools would still face rising costs equal to about eight per cent for each pupil between 2015 and 2020. Advice from the Department for Education was available to help them manage these increases.

In addition, Mr Gibb said the total core schools budget had been protected in real terms overall. School and high needs funding was at a national historic high of over £40 billion and going up to £42billion in three years as pupil numbers rose.

` Mother given community order for killing baby

Final set of works to change centre A FINAL stage of improvements will start at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham this weekend.

Freedom Leisure will improve and modernise the reception, cafe and firstfloor changing rooms from Sunday to complete its £1.4m refurbishment.

THe work will see a temporary reception area being used from February 19.

Freedom Leisure area manager Andrew Smith said: "We are pleased to be entering the final phase of work and, while it will inevitably cause some disruption, we are confident that this will be kept to a minimum.

"THe main entrance will move temporarily, some changing facilities will be relocated and the cafe will have a reduced menu but there will be no impact

"Upon completion, the reception and cafe area will be a bright and airy space with a central reception and cafe pod.

THis will make arrival and check-in at the centre more efficient. THe cafe will serve Costa coffee and the seating area will be a welcoming space for those meeting friends, waiting for their children to finish a class or simply relaxing after a workout."

Freedom Leisure was awarded the contract to run Arun District Council's indoor leisure facilities last April. It has since installed an energy conservation programme, new tiling in both pools and pool surround.

Arun cabinet member for leisure and amenities Cllr Paul Dendle said: "THese are exciting times at the Arun Leisure Centre."

A BOGNOR REGIS mother who admitted killing her newborn girl shortly after giving birth has been sentenced to a two-year community order.

Gintare Suminaite, 30, of Aldwick Road, had faced a murder charge but prosecutors accepted her guilty plea for infanticide on December 21. She appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday for sentencing.

Having spent 298 days on remand, Suminaite was given the community order which also included a rehabilitation requirement order.

Prosecutor Ed Brown QC asked the court for the murder charge to lie on file.

Detective Chief Inspector Tanya Jones, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "THis was an extremely sad and distressing case for all those involved."

THe Old Bailey was told that an ambulance was called to an address in Aldwick Road at 8.37am on April 6 last year just after Suminaite had given birth in its bathroom.

THe baby girl was sadly confirmed dead at the scene and Suminaite was taken to St Richard's Hospital at Chichester for urgent medical treatment.

THe charge stated that Suminaite caused the death of her daughter "by compression of the neck with a ligature or by manual compression of the neck".

Year 8 student Jacob Morgan said: "I really enjoyed the project. I loved it when we were selected for the Principia conference in Portsmouth. I got to meet Tim Peake and interviewed him."

Children from 8,600 schools and groups grew the seeds of the salad plant rocket. THeir 320,000 measurements made it one of the most detailed experiments of its kind.

SCIENCE pupils who took part in a space experiment at a Bognor Regis school have been thanked by Britain's famous astronaut.

Major Tim Peake said the rocket seeds trial - in which THe Regis School participated - had played a valuable role in finding out how plants could be grown in the solar system.

THe experiment saw the school receive a packet of 100 seeds from space and grow them for seven weeks alongside seeds which had stayed on Earth.

Tim told the Post: "THe blue seeds went into space and the red seeds stayed on Earth. THe students didn't know which ones were which. We wanted to see if there were any fundamental differences between the two."

THe size of the experiment ensured any changes were shown. "Many schools reported there were no differences but, so many took part, that some changes could be seen," he said. "We don't know if that's because the seeds in space were damaged by being exposed to radiation or the vibration during launch or temperature fluctuations.

Pier trust to keep going WORK will continue to return Bognor Regis Pier to public ownership, a meeting was told.

Bognor Pier Trust is maintaining its work towards towards the goal of the community taking control of the historic structure.

Trust chairman Paul Wells said he and his three fellow members, pictured above, were determined to ensure the community interest company was ready if pier owner John Ayers decided to sell.

"We have not lost sight of the pier. It's a case of waiting. THe pier is not going away. It's there as a structure.

"It's privately owned but as and when, or if, it becomes available for sale we want to be in a position to say we have everything to place to take things forward," he said.

"We know how much work needs to be done to the pier and we know the life of the pier. At some point, major investment needs to be put in, though John Ayers has said he has a programme of maintenance to begin this spring."

THe pier is registered as an asset of community value. THis means Mr Ayers' family firm, Bognor Pier Leisure, has to notify Arun District Council if it intends to sell the Grade II listed building.

THat would give the community six months to raise the funds to buy it.

THe trust had some £25,000 left last week from its funds, though the balance fluctuates as continuing expenses are paid. THe remaining cash will be available to spend on the work needed to seek the grants required to buy the pier and sustain a business case to ensure it could be maintained.

Meanwhile, the trust will seek to use the skills it has used since it was set up in 2013 to secure some £54,000 of funding towards buying the pier for residents and securing its long-term future on other community projects. THese have yet to be decided by its directors.

Ken Blamires, the trust's project director, told the some 50 people at last THursday's two-hour meeting at THe Hub: "We will look at other heritage or community assets in Bognor where our skills and expertise can be transferred.

"We will be maintaining a relationship with Mr Ayers."

THe trust would also liaise with local authorities about ensuring the pier is kept in a fit condition and see how its fundraising success can help other heritage projects in the town,he said.

THe trust was set up in September, 2013, after a failed attempt at getting the pier publicly owned again in the late 1990s.

Its initial work saw outline architectural designs for a revamped pier drawn up. THese envisaged using the historic building for a revived theatre and a restaurant alongside the current uses of a nightclub and a sports bar.

"THe plans modernised the venue but maintained the crucial characteristics of a seaside pier and kept the heritage of that," he said.

A plan for the following 5-10 years would have seen the pier of some 300ft extended closer to its original 1,000ft length. But Mr Ayers, whose firm has owned the pier since 1996, told the trust last October he was no longer prepared to sell it.

MP backs EU Bill MP NICK Gibb backed the government in this week's historic vote for Britain to leave the European Union.

Mr Gibb, the Conservative MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said yesterday: "THe British people have decided to leave the European Union.

"THeresa May has made it clear that Brexit means Brexit and Article 50 will be triggered before the end of March.

"I was pleased to support the government in voting for the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill on Wednesday and I'm pleased to report that it was carried by 498 votes to 114.

through Parliament is the House of Lords and we expect the debate on the Bill to start in the Lords in midFebruary."

Wednesday's vote in the House of Commons on the second reading of the two clause European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill came after a two day debate by MPs. Mr Gibb, who is the government minister for school standards, was in favour of remaining in Europe at the time of last June's referendum about the issue. But he acknowledged the EU had flaws and could be improved.

"THe pier is one of the most important parts of Bognor Regis. THe town is a seaside resort famous throughout Britain and, surprisingly, quite well known in other countries.

"Every seaside resort has a pier and everyone who visits a resort wants to go on the pier.

"Children like to run on a pier and look through the decking at the sea below and older people like to sit in deckchairs."

Pier Watch will continue to meet at the Regis Centre at 10am on the first Wednesday of each month.

Pier Watch's second coffee morning at the Regis Centre attracted some 60 supporters.

THey included Shripney resident Joanna Wyatt. She said: "It's all about how we can best support the pier and ensure it is protected.

"THe pier is an asset to the town and part of the town's structure and it's important to have a pier in a seaside town because it's historic.

"Different uses take place on it. It's a useful community asset which needs to be protected as such."

Rowan runs first leg of three races

THe elibrary service from West Sussex County Council opens up the world of books, newspapers and magazines to computers and smartphones.

Among those who went along to the Rose Green library on Monday was Aldwick resident Susan Brooks, pictured below right, with library assistant Rachel Wheeler.

She said: "Within ten minutes, I've learnt how to do something with the elibrary, I've spent a year trying and failing to achieve. I read at least one book a week, and usually have two or three on the go at once, and this is a really useful service."

Rachel said: "We were booked up a week ago. THis shows the library service is moving with the times."

Businessman offers advice BUSINESS expert Dr Nicholas Ashill has told Felpham students how he has marketed his astonishing venture to run 5,400km across America.

Dr Ashill lived in Bognor Regis for several years and is currently the Professor of Marketing at the American University of Sharjah in the UAE. He gave a motivational and inspiring presentation about marketing strategies and concepts to Felpham Community College sixth form business students on a return visit to the town.

Paul Darbyshire, the college's curriculum leader for business and vocational studies, said Nick's proposed run was his latest inspiring idea.

"Nick explained to the students what a huge business/marketing venture this is and what is involved with the planning and preparation for such a large event.

"His main message was clear - how important it is to follow your dreams but not be afraid to fail."

One of the sixth formers who took part in Nick's workshop was A-level business studies student Nat Roman.

He said: "Mr Ashill wants to raise money for charity by running across America and to support him and raise funds he has secured a book deal, TV programme and sponsorships.

"He has Facebook pages, a website (www.nickrunsamerica.com) and a Twitter account to promote everything he does and has even taken out newspaper adverts.

"He showed us that marketing has moved on so much, with social media, and how we can all use this."

A FELPHAM runner has completed the first leg of his triple marathon challenge this year.

Rowan Davies, 23, represented the Bognor Regis area internationally when he competed in a 26.2 mile race in sweltering conditions in Dubai.

He completed the course in 3:37:41 on behalf of Rox Music and Arts.

He said: "It was hard due to the 6.30am start and, as it got later, it got really hot all of a sudden, which made it very uncomfortable to run in.

"I'm hoping to knock another 15-20 minutes off in time for the next race and I'm confident I can do it."

Student Rowan has collected ÂŁ1,200 for the Rox annual music and arts festival which is usually held on Bognor Regis seafront and the Rox Mardi Gras 'Around the World' event in Hotham Park.

"I'm overwhelmed by the support I have received," he said. "People have been really generous and I'd really like to thank everyone."

Rowan's next challenge will be to finish two marathons in two weeks in April.

He will be taking part in the races in Brighton and London back-to-back.

He says on his fundraising page: "I have the opportunity to put on an event for Rox which is essentially my dissertation event.

"In doing so, I have had a great insight in to how Rox operates and what they do for the local community."

His is a Mardi Gras-themed with a unique twist of different cultures from around the world. It follows on from

previous events in the park such as Evolution and Mardi Gras last year.

It will be a free event and takes place on May 13. Parades, live entertainment, dancing and workshops will be in abundance and, judging from numbers in the past two years, it is expected 3-4,000 people will attend.

THe occasion will be in keeping with the wishes of Rox to continue it reputation for promoting and presenting free quality events on a not-for-profit basis.

Rubbish collections continue with deal f Celebrations at the new hospice outlet

Hospice opens furniture shop INITIAL customers to a new charity furniture outlet in North Bersted enjoyed a glass of fizz and canapes.

THe first people through the doors of the outlet opened by St Wilfrid's Hospice joined in the celebrations at the unit on the Chalcroft Nursery site.

Sandra Sedgwick, a vice-president of the hospice, officially cut the ribbon last Friday to launch the new venture.

THe spacious outlet at the Chalcraft Lane location sells a wide variety of quality donated furniture and home furnishings.

It also has a special clearance area for all types of goods.

Hospice chief executive Alison Moorey said: "We rely on support

from our community to enable us to provide the vital end of life care to patients in our community.

"So, it was great to see the queue of people outside waiting for the grand opening. THe new outlet has so much space. It's great to be able to offer such a large range of furniture for sale."

THe outlet replaces the hospice's previous furniture shop in the High Street in Bognor Regis.

THe new store is managed by Andy Mitchell and opens seven days a week, is easily accessible and has ample, free customer parking.

WEEKLY bin collections around Bognor Regis will continue under a new multimillion pound contract.

THe three-year deal to handle rubbish and recycling, which began on Tuesday, has been awarded to Biffa.

THe contractor offered the most competitive bid to win the deal from Arun District Council.

THe value of the contract has not been revealed but Arun says it will save £400,000 compared to the previous arrangement - also by Biffa.

Improvements will see kerbside recycling of small waste electrical and electronic equipment and textiles phased in.

Street washing will begin in Bognor Regis High Street and an extended summer service will clear the foreshores for longer each year. Household recycling will continue every fortnight.

Cllr Paul Dendle, who is in charge of Arun's leisure and amenities services, said: "THe company is highly respected in its field and the new contract will deliver a top quality service for residents in the district while delivering substantial savings for the council. THe service they provide in the district is frequently praised by Arun residents and this new contract provides genuine value for money over the next three years."

Spaceman Tim takes pupils out of this world DOWN-TO-EARTH Tim Peake told Chichester pupils being an astronaut was like learning to skateboard.

Tim captivated some 50 children from his former schools on a private visit to the city's Novium Museum.

His answers to their host of questions gave an unparalleled insight into life 400kms above Earth.

Tim spent six months aboard the International Space Station as the first British-flagged astronaut.

He said: "Coming back on Earth is really tough on the body. But going into space sees your body have a really good time because of the microgravity. You feel liberated. Your muscles don't need to work.

"It takes about two weeks to get used to it. It's like learning to play tennis or to skateboard. THere's a learning curve until you get used to it.

"When you land, your heart is too small, your blood pressure is too low and you don't have enough blood in your body. If you got up straight out of the spacecraft after you landed, you would collapse."

Tim spent about two hours at the museum last Friday. It was his first visit back to his home city since he landed last summer and he was about to look around the museum's exhibition about his interstellar exploits His lift ride to the exhibition on the first

floor saw him joined by a group of pupils from Westbourne Primary School and Chichester High School of Boys.

Among them was Westbourne's Jack Ratcliffe, 11. He said: "It was amazing to be in the same lift as Tim Peake. I was standing right next to him.

"I told him that it couldn't believe I was next to him and he laughed when I said it. His comments about being in space were brilliant. I learned a lot from them. " Chichester High School A-level student Jasper McGarry, 17, is following in Tim's footsteps as a member of the school's Combined Cadet Force. He is a corporal in its air force section.

"Tim was a really friendly guy. It was nice to speak to him when we were in the lift," he said. "He asked me about the cadet force and asked me how the flying was at the moment. I love everything about being in the cadet force and I'm looking for a career in the RAF. "Tim proved that you can come from Chichester and be an astronaut and to never think something is impossible.

"But it's a one in a million chance and I'm not sure I would get that."

Tim, 44, grew up in Westbourne during the USA Space Shuttle programme and left school to spend 18 years in the RAF. His finishing rank was Major and his time as a serviceman ended just as the European Space Agency changed its policy to make it possible for its member

nations to send someone into space.

He became an astronaut in 2009 and spent 30 months training from May, 2013, before he boarded a Soyuz spacecraft to travel to the International Space Station.

Having to speak Russian in space was one of the challenges he faced along with keeping his food down without gravity to send it through his digestive system and how to relieve himself.

He would spent his 12 hour working weekdays carrying out scientific tests as well as maintaining the space station. THis included a memorable space walk which involved 12 hours in a spacesuit.

All the food in space has reduced salt and Tim revealed the astronauts used plenty of tabasco sauce to add spice to their meals and add flavour.

But the breathtaking views of fragile planet Earth and its 'tiny' atmosphere made up for that.

AN ALDWICK man has started an extended 15-year sentence after pleading guilty to sexual offences against a young boy and distributing an indecent photo of a child.

Sean Robert Williams, 27, unemployed, of Gossamer Lane, Aldwick, was sentenced for five oral rapes of a child under 13, five sexual assaults on the same boy, causing/ inciting the boy to engage in sexual activity and distributing an indecent internet photo of a child.

Recorder George Lawson-Rogers sentenced Williams at Brighton Crown Court to a ten-year custodial term, followed by a five-year extended term on release licence supervision.

Williams was also issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order severely restricting his access to children and will be a registered sex offender for life.

He pleaded not guilty to four charges of making indecent images and four charges of possessing extreme pornographic images.

THese charges were not proceeded with and the Recorder directed that they should lay on the court file pending any further court decision.

None of the making indecent images charges, or the indecent distribution offence of which Williams was convicted, related to the boy he offended against.

THe images were all taken from the internet and did not involve any local children.

Detective Constable Jo French said: "THe indecent photo offence occurred in 2015 and was reported to us by a concerned member of the public.

"As a result of our investigation into this offence, the sexual offences against the eight to 11-year-old boy, that occurred between 2011 and 2013, were discovered.

"We are pleased that the court has acknowledged the serious nature of the offending and that, if Williams is to be released within the 15-year period, he will first need to convince a parole board that he is no longer a significant risk to children.

"Sussex Police take reports of this nature very seriously and will investigate them thoroughly to bring offenders to justice wherever possible.

HEADLINE deadlines were among the challenges faced by students at the biggest event of its kind at Felpham Community College.

More than 200 pupils took part in the Newsroom Bootcamp held by journalist and TV newsreader John Young.

He spent a complete day at the college last week passing on the skills needed to survive in the fast-paced environment and how making decisions, speaking up and meeting tight timescales would help them in their future careers.

Paul Darbyshire, the college's curriculum leader for business and vocational education, said: "THe students are working on various activities to do with employability skills in the media.

"THis is the first time we have done this type of event in terms of all the year group being involved."

Some 220 students in Year 9 took part in the day-long activities at the college.

"THis is letting the students know what makes the news and why it makes the news. It's first-hand experience from somebody who is a reporter and a newsreader," said Mr Darbsyhire.

THe boost to the Time to Talk service run by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is aimed at making it easier for everyone with the conditions to receive help.

Time to Talk is a friendly service which offers talking therapies for people who are struggling with pyschological issues.

People have been able to self-refer by phone since 2015 but some groups - like men and those from black, ethnic and minority groups - can find it hard to make that initial phone call.

Ed Brennan, Time to Talk's general manager, said: "We are passionate about offering treatments for people who may be reluctant to visit their GP or speak to a member of our team to seek advice."

THe event - and smiliar ones for other industries - was aimed at helping to overcome the situation where 50 per cent of employers were unhappy with the skills which students had when they left education.

Among those who took part in the workshop was potential lawyer Anna Mosley, 14. Anna said she found the workshop useful in helping towards her future career.

"We had to write down our qualities. I said I was passionate, helpful, caring and a good listener.

"I'm also able to see the other side of a discussion and being good at stating a case. I like reading and there's a lot of reading involved in the law as well."

Would-be session drummer Alex Connell, 13, was another involved with the workshop.

"It's really useful. We get to learn about moving out of our comfort zone and speaking up and what motivates other people to speak up.

"I've learned what qualities people are looking for and how to speak to people.

"I like drumming and I want to be a session musician because I'll always be in work. I'm really hopeful this will teach me how to promote myself really well and get people to listen to me."

Rooms were set aside for charity in centre ARUN ARTS was offered space in the Regis Boardwalk proposal which will take the place of the charity's base on Bognor Regis seafront.

THe charity's trustees have been critical of the proposal put forward by the Sir Richard Hotham Project as part of its £80m regeneration scheme because it would see the Regis Centre and its Alexandra THeatre bulldozed.

But the project's lead developer, THomas Elliott, put aside an area in his proposed development to ensure it could continue on the same site.

Arun District Council planning officer Claire Potts said in her report to councillors on Wednesday the current plan differed from the original one they rejected last March.

"THe ground floor of the previous scheme comprised 12 retail units, a pub/ restaurant, cafe, two offices, apartments and a leisure complex (swimming pool/ gym). THe revised scheme has reduced the number of retail units to seven, 'set aside' the cafe/office area for use by Arun Arts - 510sq m - and allocated 1,908sq m over two floors for leisure and family indoor activities."

THese had been stated in the plan to be high-tech virtual reality activities, with the proposal of a community arts centre, a virtual golf course, climbing wall, spa and other virtual games.

THey will take up 1,908sq m to come to just over three times the size of the restaurant and bar.

f A floor plan of the proposed Regis Boardwalk THe extra leisure space took the building closer to Arun's desired 'leisure heart' principle for the town but still fell short of the preferred jewel in the crown centrepiece, said Ms Potts.

THe building would stretch 155m along THe Esplanade and reach six storeys high. THe ground floor will comprise shops with 192 flats above. One in three will be affordable accommodation.

A raised boardwalk would run the length of the building next to THe Esplanade.

Outside, the Place St Maur was proposed as a plaza/digital interactive square as a multi-purpose space for outdoor entertainment and markets.

Landscape improvements were planned to link the Place and the

seafront to the town centre.

A 309-space underground car park would serve the complex with a further 18 chevron parking spaces on its frontage on THe Esplanade. Of these spaces, 65 would be for the public compared to the 187 public parking spaces in the current car park. THe number was about ten per cent less than the county council's parking demand calculator.

But when the 477 spaces at the new Hothamton site were included - against the 215 current spaces - it led to a gain of 464 to meet the projected demand.

It was expected that 2,669 extra traffic movements were to have been generated by the theatre daily. But the county council said the Queensway/ Canada Grove junction was able to cope.

Theatre body backed venue THEATRE watchdogs haf backed the creation of a West End-standard venue in Bognor Regis.

Members of the THeatres Trust welcomed the proposals for the 1,200seat entertainment base which formed a major part of an £80m regeneration scheme funded by City of London firms.

THe Sir Richard Hotham Project wanted to build the £25m eight-storey theatre including a 48-bedroom hotel and two shops - on the Hothamton car park off Queensway, pictured right.

THe THeatres Trust was asked to give its views at a meeting with representatives of Arun District Council, the Sir Richard Hotham Project, a theatre consultant and an independent theatre producer.

THe summary of the report - given to Arun's development control committee on Wednesday - says: "THe scheme provides a really good opportunity to provide Bognor Regis with a state of the art theatre facility to cater for a growing population, to act as a catalyst for the area and to help Bognor become a destination

town. It is agreed that Bognor requires investment to help with its ambitions to regenerate the town.

"However, it is also important that any proposal meets the needs of Bognor and fits with the overall masterplan of Arun.

"It is also important that any proposal does not, in the future, become a financial burden to be carried by the council and hence the absolute need to determine the scheme's viability."

But the report also says a fully costed business plan and the need for talks between Arun and the project about a lease for the theatre had to be carefully considered for the impact they would have on the venue's ability to survive without a subsidy.

Mr Elliott had pledged to build the theatre before the town's existing entertainment venue at the Regis Centre, pictured left, was knocked down to make way for a mixed-use development.

THis was to ensure live entertainment could carry on seamlessly in the town.

THe University of Chichester was keen to get involved with the theatre to cater for its growing number of students on musical theatre, dance and theatre studies courses among others.

THe Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moscow State Circus and the Tate Gallery had also expressed an interest in using the new theatre.

Its capacity could have been reduced from 1,100 seats to 384 seats to more closely match the 357 at the centre's Alexandra THeatre and cater for its operator, the Arun Arts charity.

THe theatre was planned to include ground floor facilities - like dressing rooms and bars - plus basement rooms

and a second floor exhibition space.

A trust was intended by the project to include representatives from those bodies to ensure its operation met their needs.

"It was confirmed that the programme will be planned around the needs of Arun Arts," the report says. "Pricing for tickets in the new theatre will be based on a 6:1 model with a top ticket price of £30 and a bottom price ticket of £5 to cater for the growing student population of Bognor."

THe theatre would have boasted a fly tower, crucial to attract leading touring shows, as well as a proscenium arch.

Free heart rate monitoring will also be offered to runners to compare the rate before and after they have finished the 5km route.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council's cabinet member for community services, said small changes to a person's daily routine could make a big difference to their heart.

"I'm delighted that the team at Arun Wellbeing is raising awareness of heart health and would encourage residents of any age to take advantage of the support available to help them live a healthier lifestyle."

Why do you think it is important to create homemade dishes and to use fresh ingredients?

Homemade dishes created from base ingredients is important as we can verify what is in each dish for customers who wish to know exactly what they are consuming. We believe very much in fresh is best, and so that is our biggest selling point, all our dishes are homemade from fresh ingredients from as many local producers as possible to support our local community as much as we can.

What are your most popular dishes and why do you think that is?

Our most popular main dish is our 6hr slow roasted pork belly, everyone just raves about it due to the how tender it is and how the taste is enhanced by how its cooked.

Our most popular dessert is our double chocolate nut brownie, served with homemade chocolate sauce and now served with our homemade vanilla ice cream. THis dessert also comes as a gluten free option on request. People even pop in to have it as a dessert after eating elsewhere, and others come to dine just to have the excuse to have some after their main course.

Although you offer a range of full meals do you also sell lighter options such as sandwiches?

We offer open sandwiches, paninis, wraps as well as omlettes and scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon or bacon alongside soup of he day and starters that can be made into main sizes.

As well as set menus for lunch and dinner you also have a specials board. Can you give us an

example of some of the dishes found here?

Our daily specials feature homemade traditional pies, be they mash topped ones or full pastry ones.

We always have at least two forms of fish dishes on our boards, varying from homemade fishcakes, such as crab and chilli, or salmon and prawn and more. We also offer fillets of fish as well as whole grilled flat fish dishes.

You cater for celiacs, what gluten free options do you have on your menus?

THe majority of our menu is either gluten free or the items that need to be substituted can be with alternatives or omitted completely. Again this is due to us producing our dishes from base ingredients that we can adapt or omit for customers on request. All our sauces are made gluten free the only exceptions are some dressing that contain mustards, hence we are currently looking into our base ingredients that we use such as certain mustards that contain gluten to see if we can source like for like ingredients that are gluten free.

What other dietary requirements do you cater for, and what are some of their menu highlights?

We have on our current new evening a la carte menu created a vegetarian dish that is also suitable for a vegan as well as being gluten free. Vegans can be catered for on a one on one basis when advised of their requirements. THat is the beauty of us; we can adapt base ingredients that we have in our kitchen to provide dishes for diners who need specific requirements met for them to dine safely.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Do you have a special menu in honour of the date?

Yes we have a Valentine's Day menu that we are serving on the day. Also though, from the Sunday evening before Valentines' to the Friday evening following we shall have a 2 or 3 course meal deal from our changing evening specials board and dessert board.

The many benefits of sports massages I FIND that when people come and see me for a nutrition consultation, it needs to be in a lovely private setting that feels personal and calm. Lindy Griffiths and associates physiotherapy centre, on the main road towards Bosham, offers exactly this.

I have started seeing clients from her clinic and it’s so lovely to have a base near Chichester. THere are a number of different therapists involved here, including sports massage, physiotherapists, Alexandra technique, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), counselling, and of course, myself, as a nutritionist.

THey also have Pilates and yoga teachers so it’s quite the lovely hub of healthiness!

Together, we can treat the body, mind and muscles!

For anyone who is interested and has questions to ask concerning their health, be it physically, mentally, emotionally or nutritionally, we are going to offer a talk in March to clarify what we really do, and hopefully make things clearer regarding who and what ailments we can help.

No question is too big all small.

We are also creating a regular, once a month drop-in clinic, where anyone can pop in and have a free 10 minute appointment with any of the professional practitioners to discuss your health worries, emotional issues and/ or get your body physically fit and injury free through yoga, pilates, physiotherapy or sports massage.

So what exactly is sports massage?

It is a type of massage that can alleviate pain occurring in certain parts of the body, which can be caused by too much physical activity.

THis type of massage was originally developed to serve athletes as a way to prevent and relieve injuries, but both athletes and non-athletes can gain physiological and psychological benefits from receiving sports

massage therapy.

It can also prevent or relieve delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which typically begins to develop 12 to 24 hours after the exercise has been performed.

DOMS may produce the greatest pain between 24 and 72 hours after the exercise has been performed. Sports massage therapy prevents delayed onset muscle soreness by encouraging blood and lymph flow throughout the body, preventing muscle fatigue.

I do a lot of seminars and corporate events around stress management, and we all know too well the feeling when we are a little frazzled and pulled in a million directions.

However, stress has a major part to play in our crazy, overworked, fast paced society, and many diseases are being associated with our elevated levels of stress.

When a person receives a sports massage, their body releases neurotransmitters called endorphins. THese endorphins are released by two centres of the brain known as the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, and they act as the body's natural pain reliever.

Endorphins that are released due to receiving a sports massage help to decrease anxiety, provide pain relief, improve mood and enhance a person's state of well being.

A massage is considered to be a luxury in this country, but I think it should be a necessity!

It should be mandatory that we all have a massage once per week. Can you imagine how relaxed we would all be?

A personal level of care at Chalcraft Hall Care Home SITUATED in Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted, Chalcraft Hall Care Home is a true example of how independent companies can provide that unrivalled personal touch.

December last year was an exciting time both for the residents and staff at Chalcraft Hall, not just because of Christmas. Two of Chalcraft’s ladies, Ethel Gaish and Ruby Horner, celebrated their 100th birthdays at the end of the month.

Both the residents and staff enjoyed the party.

Tracey said: “We try to have parties like this whenever we can, in fact we have a birthday party planned for today!

“THe party for Ethel and Ruby was a really lovely and beautiful day for them.”

Not only was the party attended by those at the care home, but friends and family members of the centenarians also made an appearance.

Ethel actually had around 20 members of family there.

Born in Clapham on December 20, 1916, Ethel enjoys music and singing at the home. In her youth, she was a keen gardener and swimmer.

We also, importantly, have the time to do this as a result of the generous staffing levels at Chalcraft.”

Ruby was born only a few days later, in Kenley, Surrey, on December 26. She also enjoys music and gardening.

Tracey, who has worked previously for large chain homes, acknowledged that a lot of the success of the party was due to the way the home was run. She said: “Because we are a small company, we are able to offer something more personal for the residents.

Over the festive period, the staff at Chalcraft worked hard to make it a Christmas to remember for the residents by bringing the theatre to them with an unforgettable pantomime.

Staff members donned all manner of costumes for a show that the residents and their families enjoyed. Tracey herself was cast as the dashing Prince Charming!

Fun and entertainment are always a consideration at Chalcraft Hall. Once a week, live music is provided by Henry, the accordion player, and their activity coordinator brings quizzes, bingo, dancing, music therapy and much more to the residents who eagerly await the next visit.

Tracey explained how important this was to the home. She said: “THe entertainment and activities really capture what we do here at Chalcraft. We aim to care for our residents in every way possible, and make them, as well as the staff, feel at home.”

NUFFIELD HEALTH CHICHESTER REVEALS LENGTH-OF-STAY DOWN OVER A THIRD NEW data released by Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital show the length-of-stay for orthopaedic surgery has declined by forty per cent in the past decade. The figures relate to patients undergoing a total hip or knee replacement.

The length-of-stay for a total hip replacement has declined 42 per cent from an average six night stay in 2006 to threeand-a-half nights in 2015. For total knee replacement the decline has been equally as dramatic, down from 5.8 nights in 2006 to 3.5 nights in 2015, a reduction of 40 per cent.

Mr Richard Hill, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital said, “The past ten years have seen changes in the technology and techniques used for orthopaedic surgery which have reduced the need for lengthy hospital stays and

improved recovery times.

Incisions have become smaller and there been a reduction in the amount of trauma to the area around the joint by leaving tendons intact and sparing tissue.”

Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital has been performing orthopaedic surgery for 24 years and in 2015, helped improve the lives of 1,494 patients through orthopaedic interventions.

Sarah Currier, Physiotherapy Manager at the Hospital said, “In Chichester we see patients with all sorts of conditions each year; people with arthritis following sports injuries, those who have developed painful joints due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and those with congenital abnormalities.

The types of treatments we’re able to provide today were merely pipedreams a

generation ago.”

Earlier this year Nuffield Health revealed a dramatic rise in the number of hip and knee replacements in those under 55. The rise is attributed partly to the Baby Boomer generation seeking treatment to maintain active lives.

Nuffield Health Medical Director Geoff Graham said, “Nuffield Health has been involved in some of the most important developments in orthopaedic surgery. Our hospital in Oxford was an early home for the development of the Oxford Knee which was pioneered forty years ago this year - now used the world over. More recently surgeons working in our hospitals have begun using a new technique for hip replacement, which can mean patients are up walking in a matter of hours after surgery.”

Carpe vinum at Morrison's Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

FRESH meat and fish - fine purveyors thereof are Morrison's, so I duly ventured this week into their Bognor Regis store in order to avail myself of any wine offers of note.

Morrison's, in fact, is gathering an increasingly good reputation for its own label red wine range in particular, although my initial foray was into the white wine section where I spotted a South African Black Cuvée XV Sauvignon Blanc currently discounted down to £4.75, full of passion fruit flavours, too tangy for my palate, but might suit South African wine enthusiasts!

For an extra pound sterling I espied a 2014 New Zealand Whistling Track Sauvignon Blanc and noted its clear gooseberry notes, hint of tropical fruit and crispy minerality and, at this discounted price , well worth a punt as a good picnic wine.

At the same offer price, South Australia beckoned in the form of an Oxford Landing Sauvignon Blanc from 2016 and I remarked upon its bright clean finish with citrus and green apple flavours to the fore. THis wine would be a fresh, flavoursome apéritif or

could accompany seafood , fish or chicken.

Next, a chance visit to the Littlehampton branch proved eminently fruitful as I unearthed a gem for a mere six pounds, namely a Morrison's selection of 2015 Western Australian Chardonnay.

Chardonnay is the most versatile white wine grape in the world and travels well.

It is at its most pure and intense in the village of Chablis, with more luxurious wines coming from Burgundy's southern vineyards such as Meursault (oh the creamy butter!) and Australia's Margaret River and Yarra region and California's

Sonoma close in quality. Morrison's looks to new wines of affordable price and this Western Australian example benefits from the long sunny days and cooling sea breezes producing wines of depth and structure.

Apples and custard on the nose, good concentration of its stone fruit flavour, creaminess reminiscent of an excellent French Maçon with well-integrated oakthis wine is one you are reluctant to put down, fresh and delightfully clean on the palate and bears the accolade of my wine of the week!

Before I change colour, you will notice the Deborah Bonham photo I promised you last week and I can update you with the hot news that she is going to tour with Paul Rodgers, celebrating the music of Free, in May, 2017, with a local date of THursday, May 25, at Portsmouth Guildhall - see you there!

Metamorphosing, I now procured a Sorso 2013 Primitivo at a rather alluring £5 price tag and mindful that sorso means a sip I indulged in a few, if not many, and observed tobacco and leather with juicy blackberry and blueberry fruits and a spicy

bouquet - and at the offer price of £5 a somewhat tantalising selection!

For an outlay of £7, the 2013 Chianti Classico selected by Morrison's is produced in the rolling hills between Florence and Siena which delimit the rather exclusive Chianti Classico and is a rich, intense red with spicy, dark cherry flavours.

Signing off, may I suggest that Morrison's may well not disappoint at this competitive price range and veritably merits your attention - à la prochaine, mes amis!

CHICKEN STUFFED

WITH HERBY

MASCARPONE INGREDIENTS • 3 tbsp mascarpone • 1 tbsp finely chopped rosemary • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 2 chicken breasts, skin on • 4 slices prosciutto • splash olive oil • juice of half a lemon

difficulty: easy total time: 25 mins

METHOD THis recipe is quick to make and healthy. It also tastes delicious!

pan, add the olive oil and quickly brown the chicken on both sides.

1. Heat oven to 200C for a fan oven or 180C for a nonfan

7. Transfer to a roasting tin, then finish off in the oven for 15-20 mins until just cooked.

2. Mix the mascarpone with the rosemary, garlic and seasoning.

3. Place the chicken breasts on a board and lift, but don’t detach, the skin.

4. Put a spoonful of the mascarpone mix under the skin of each breast.

5. Wrap 2 slices of prosciutto around each, as neatly and tightly as you can, to keep the filling enclosed.

6. Heat a non-stick frying

8. Check that the chicken is cooked all the way through by prodding it at its thickest part. If it feels firm then it's fine 9. Add the lemon juice to the roasting tin and stir over the heat, scraping off any crispy bits.

10. Spoon the juices over the chicken and serve with potatoes and green beans.

Community News & Views My Sisters' House WELCOME to our latest column provided

by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre.

These columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help.

It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

FOR months and months we have seen articles, letters and Facebook posts about the lack of funding for local schools.

Governors have threatened to withdraw their services unless the government provides £20million of emergency funding to West Sussex schools. As the funding crisis within our schools deepens, governors from 40 schools have written to their MPs warning they were also giving 'serious consideration' to refusing to sign off school budgets for 2017/18.

THe letters came on the back of headteachers’ warnings class sizes would grow, the curriculum would narrow and school hours would be reduced if more money was not made available.

THrowing their weight behind the WorthLess campaign for fairer funding, the governors said a lack of money meant they were being forced to consider cutting the resources available to students – a prospect they branded 'unacceptable'.

One cannot possibly argue the validity of their voices - this comes after years of restricted financing. As well as the current poor funding, they said they had 'grave concerns' about the adequacy of the new National Funding Formula, which is due to come into effect in 2018.

We must all agree education is important and many of parents are ‘community’ custodians of our schools. We cannot, therefore, sit idly by as our school leaders are placed in an impossible financial situation. But could schools be run more efficiently? Is there room for more imaginative funding? Could schools become more entrepreneurial?

Education may not always be thought of as an innovative sector but as schools increasingly look to relieve budgetary burdens and provide inspirational education experiences, a new breed of innovative social enterprises are emerging that can help on both counts. I see the future as being one of partnerships developed between schools and social entrepreneurs. In these times of austerity, moving to a more autonomous structure, away from local authority control, headteachers have been rightly cautious and prudent about spending money. What do you think?

But if social entrepreneurial partnerships are to flourish to the benefit of children and their families, two things must happen: social entrepreneurs must clearly demonstrate their social impact and schools are going to have to spend. Finding a model that works is something that Tom Ravenscroft, the managing director of Enabling Enterprise, has invested a lot of time into.

Starting with the simple idea of taking groups of students to visit local businesses, Ravenscroft brought the ideas back into the classroom and got groups of students to set up their own live small businesses. Out of that class, all bar one achieved five good GCSEs, more than half the students achieved a top grade on their business studies course, and many went on to study business.

MEMBERS of a Bognor Regis church will be swimming to raise funds for a new extension to serve the community.

More money is needed to complete the internal works to the new facility at Opengate Church in Victoria Drive.

To pay for them, the worshippers are hoping to swim 37,105 metres - or some 23 miles - for two hours tomorrow and next Saturday at the Arun Leisure Centre.

THis is a mile longer than the shortest point of the English Channel.

A church spokesman said:

A FREE vocal masterclass for singing students is being held at Bognor Regis Music Club tomorrow.

THe session will be led by Susan Legg, the head of vocal studies at the University of Chichester, pictured below.

Advanced students from the university and the music club will perform their solo songs and then focus on characterisation and presentation.

Susan is keen to help students understand the importance of the text in their songs and will focus on bringing words to life and unmasking the character.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "We are looking forward to Susan's masterclass and are sure she will bring her enthusiasm and teaching gifts to help support and encourage the singers who are taking part.

"To encourage other singing students to attend, we are offering free entrance to full-time singing students. Other students will only have to pay £5 to enjoy the evening."

Club members taking part will be Rebecca Grove, Barbara Leech and John Luck. THe participants from the university will be Sophie Hermon-Taylor, Charlotte Roberts and Jamie Formoy.

THe information evening is aimed at encouraging volunteers to become trustees of the organisations and put their skills and enthusiasm to good use.

It is being held by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester from 5.30-7.30pm at THe Loft, THe Body Shop, Watersmead in Littlehampton.

Inspiring individuals will be present to pass on details of their experiences helping various charities and voluntary groups thrive and perform their essential roles in the community.

THey will also explain how they have acquired new skills and increased their knowledge of the voluntary sector as trustees.

Sue Holmes, a trustee of VAAC, said: "In our working lives, we develop so many skills. It's nice to be able to keep using those skills and using them in a way which supports local groups and charities, who provide so many services in our communities.

"We might not be able to give financial support to these groups but we can give some of our time.

"As a trustee, I am a member of a team. On my own, I might not be able to change things, but as a trustee - with others - I really can make a difference to those who need support in my local community."

Stroll into the past along busy modern road

f QUICK

A circular walk from The Steyne uncovers hundreds of years of history AS OUR weather is quite settled, at the moment I wonder if you fancy having a stroll through our history for a change.

Well, on the first good Saturday or Sunday why not take a stroll?

For this we shall start at THe Steyne. THis area was first developed in the 1820s as an area for many fashionable residences.

An area of housing with a grass area, enclosed by fencing that would allow people to walk, talk and be seen. THe railings have recently been replaced after many years of absence.

Our walk will start at the drinking fountain that was originally erected on the promenade, overlook THe Steyne.

It was constructed in 1898 as a permanent memorial for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

THe original idea came from Mr Cooper, the Chemist in West Street, who thought that visiting children should have somewhere where it was possible to obtain a drink of water on their visit to the seaside.

Also in THe Steyne it was possible to indulge in

a bath at the Bath House. Here, it would cost 6d for a pail of warm water to be used in their baths.

If you look closely at the gardens near the road you will also find a stone commemorating Amnesty International, and this was laid in 1998.

Walking west, we pass on our left the new sea wall that was erected in 1991 following the frequent flooding in this vicinity for a number of years to the detriment of the trades that operated on this road. THe first prom was laid in 1838 and had therefore managed to protect the seafront for many years.

We next continue walking along the road between the Royal Norfolk that was built in 1836 and the land that today is occupied by young people on their skate boards, which originally housed a bandstand that became the Esplanade THeatre. THerefore, the range of entertainment that has been produced on this small triangle of land has certainly moved with the times.

was a GPs surgery that replaced the Arlington Hotel. THis hotel always had a prominent advertisement in holiday guides, telling visitors of their sea view.

Next on our right we come to one of the most fascinating buildings in the town, that of the White Tower. THis was built in 1809 by Cyril Hawes, who was to become a missionary and travelled to Australia where he became famous for designing and building churches and cathedrals. He eventually moved to Cat Island, off Florida where he died and is buried.

Continue west along Aldwick Road and hidden away to the south is a small group of premises that were constructed from the converted barns of the seafront premises.

Arriving at the crossroads, with Victoria Drive, we cross to the shops, where once there was Cucumber Farm until it was purchased and transformed into the mock Tudor buildings that we have today. At the far end of the shops and flats, high on the top of one of the water gutters, can be clearly scene the date of 1921 showing their construction date.

Opposite is the New Barn Garage, which is situated in the building that once belonged to the Norman THompson Aircraft factory in Middleton and was moved here in 1919 for Wilmot’s Garage. On this side of the road is another date - that of 1912 - indicating when another section of the road was constructed.

THe shops that occupied this section were Pennington’s and others.

On our right at the end of the main shops is the nursing home that was opened in 1898 and was owned by the Whitbread brewing group for its staff and dependants. In the 1920s, it was known as Baileys. From 1994, it has been known as the Royal Bay Nursing Home. just one of many that occupied areas around the town. Here we cross the road to walk towards the sea down Nyewood Lane.

Arriving at Stocker Road, we should stop and try to imagine what this area looked like in the

1800s when in fact it was the town racecourse.

Yes, that’s right, a racecourse. I can remember when I first starting looking into the history of the town I came across a picture of the races and thought I had found something no-one else had heard about. Eventually, the land was purchased

by Dr Stocker after whom the road is named.

If we then continue down to the seafront, we arrive at Marine Parade West, which on some postcards of the 1950s and 1960s is shown as Goodwood Drive but it was felt it did not sound suitable for a seaside road and was ultimately changed.

Turn left and walk along the road back towards Bognor Regis, we pass many larger houses, each of which no doubt have their own story, one in particular was used during the Second World War as a post for the air raid wardens. On the corner of the road is THe Marlborough Hotel, now flats, and if you look carefully you will see that the columns are made from circular bricks.

Continue the walk along the prom past the yacht club and then you will find a grass area that leads back to the front of a house, that of Culver Cottage, which was bequeathed to the National Trust, which sold it in 1920. THe cottage is now concealed partially by the yacht club.

THe foundation stone of this house was laid in 1837 and was on the edge of Aldwick at that time.

THen we come across the Rock Gardens, the modern building that was erected in the 1980s.

THe original houses were in a crescent shape of individual buildings overlooking their own gardens and the sea. THese were built in 1804 and consisted of houses, hotels and accommodation, which was used extensively during the summer months, with some apartments costing 2gns per week, until Goodwood fortnight when the rate would increase to 8gns.

Finally, we arrive at the skateboard park, before finally crossing the road to return to THe Steyne, thus ending our circular town of just one area of the town.

THE ALL-NEW KIA RIO KIA'S Rio supermini is more than ever a 'big little car' with the introduction of the new fourth-generation model – just arrived and on sale now at Newbarn Kia. THe all-new Rio is the largest and most spacious to date. It has a full connectivity package and advanced driver assistance systems, features new turbocharged petrol engines and has new suspension and steering, while the acclaimed styling has a more mature and polished appearance. THe all-new Rio is on sale as a five-door model only, in line with customer demand.

THe all-new Rio is offered in the UK in a 10-model line-up based on four engines, three gearboxes and four trim levels, including a limited-run, luxuriously equipped ‘First Edition’ variant. Available with Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian recognition, and also features both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

THe all-new Rio has revised proportions and balance, with a longer wheelbase, bonnet and front overhang, a lower roofline and a more upright and compact back end.

Detailing inside and out has been designed to emphasise the car's interior space and its stability on the road. THe increased leg and shoulder room are among the best in class, as is headroom – despite the lower roofline.

A further benefit from the new proportions is increased boot capacity – up by almost 13 per cent to 325 litres – while the fuel tank is two litres larger at 45 litres.

Kia's 1.0-litre T-GDi (Turbocharged

Gasoline Direct-injection) engine is offered in Rio for the first time and heads a sevenstrong powertrain line-up which shows improvements in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions over the outgoing Rio. THe new engines showcase Kia's advanced engine technology capabilities through downsizing, turbocharging, direct fuel injection and weight reduction, and feature a number of detailed engineering solutions to minimise throttle lag – the delay between the driver pressing the accelerator and the turbocharger delivering boost – and reduce internal friction.

THey join revised versions of Kia's 1.25-litre and 1.4-litre petrol engines, and two versions of the European-designed and Europeanbuilt 1.4-litre CRDi turbodiesel.

THe 1.0-litre T-GDi engine is available with either 99 or 118bhp, in both cases with 171Nm of torque across a wide rev band, starting at only 1,500rpm, for effortless driveability. THe 99bhp powered version has fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 62.8mpg and 102g/km, while the sparkling 118bhp version is not far behind, with 60.1mpg and 107g/km. Both are capable of more than 50mpg in city driving.

THe respective 0-60mph acceleration times are 10.3 and 9.8 seconds, and both versions have a top speed of at least 115mph.

THe fuel economy champion of the allnew Rio range is the lesser-powered, 76bhp 1.4-litre diesel, a new option in Rio, which replaces the former three-cylinder 1.1-litre CRDi. Both 1.4-litre diesels have a healthy 240Nm of torque and have CO2 emissions

below 100g/km – 92g/km and 98g/km respectively – while fuel consumption figures are 80.7 and 74.3mpg. In the case of the lesserpowered unit, this is an improvement of 2.2mpg and 2g/km over the previous 1.1-litre CRDi. THe 240Nm of torque is available from just 1,500rpm, giving sprightly acceleration from 0-60mph in either 13.5 or 11.6 seconds, with top speeds of more than 100mph.

THe 1.25-litre petrol engine develops an unchanged 83bhp and 121Nm of torque, and has fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 58.8mpg and 109g/km. THis easy-going entry-level power unit is ideally suited to urban driving, but is far from out of its depth at highway speeds. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in 12.5 seconds on the way to a top

speed of 107mph.

THe final option is a multi-point injection petrol unit with a capacity of 1.4 litres and power and torque outputs of 98bhp and 133Nm. Economy is 56.5mpg, as with the 1.4 in the previous Rio, with unchanged CO2 emissions of 114g/km. THe 0-60mph and top speed figures are 11.8 seconds and 108mph.

THis engine is also available with a fourspeed automatic gearbox for the convenience of drivers who spend most of their time in heavy traffic or who prefer an auto box. In this configuration, economy and CO2 emissions are improved to 46.3mpg and 140g/km (previously 44.8mpg and 147g/km), while the performance figures are 0-60mph in 13.4 seconds and a top speed of 103mph.

Rob Lawrence's side go into the rescheduled match at Sutton & Epsom tomorrow (2.15pm) off the back of one of their finest performances in recent seasons.

In front of a home crowd, the third-bottom Blues pulverised third-placed Hertford and, in one of the shocks of the season, emerged with 30-22 victory.

THat win - alongside a ten point penalty to rivals Southend - lifts Chi out of the relegation zone of National League THree London and South East division for the first time since October.

Roger Gould, the club's press officer, described it as a "memorable result".

He said: "Chi's forwards won a fierce battle against an experienced visiting pack and the whole team responded when Hertford came back early in the second half.

"THe margin would have been bigger if Chichester had not gifted two tries.

"THe Blues' outstanding players were Number 8, Chris Johnson, who showed his strength and speed all over the pitch, and Taff Davies, who kicked 6 out of 6 from the tee. " Chi started strongly, and a few minutes in Johnson and Jack Arden-Brown punched a hole in the defence. After a prolonged series of pick-and-go from five metres, flanker Jack Bentall crossed for the try.

Hertford struck back with a try of their own, but a Davies penalty and then a Johnson try made it 17-5 at the break.

THe visitors showed their class at the start of the second period, scoring two quick tries to take the lead 19-17. But Chi showed their fighting spirit and Harry Seaman charged over a score which Davies again converted.

24-19.

THe final section of the match was nervy - and despite Hertford scoring a penalty, Davies managed to score two of his own to give the Blues the victory.

THe win makes it two wins in a row and four from six since before Christmas.

Hopes are high there will be another cause for celebration against mid-table Sutton tomorrow.

CHICHESTER men's firsts return to competitive action tomorrow after the lengthy winter break with all hopes set on working their way up the table.

Mark Pacey's side ended the first half of the season seventh in the very strong ten team men's conference west division.

A friendly with Brighton and Hove men's firsts last weekend proved to be the best preparation for a trip to the University of Birmingham on Sunday (12.30pm).

Chi know it will be a tough match against a side full students who are currently fourth in the division.

But there will be hope that the Sussex side can replicate their form a few months ago when they beat Brum 5-4 in a thriller at home.

It does not get any easier the week after - with Pacey's side returning to Kingsham to host Team Bath Buccaneers, another university side which sit second.

With just three points separating Chi in seventh and the University of Bristol at the

bottom, the pressure is on for a good start to the second half of the season to ensure they do not start slipping down the table.

Meanwhile, Chichester Ladies continued their remarkable form by crushing Lewes seconds 7-0 at Kingsham last weekend.

THat win keeps Meg Goring's side top of the Sussex Women's Premier Division - level on points with Brighton and Hove seconds and one point clear of Horsham seconds, who have a game in hand.

THe win at the weekend means Chi have now won their last ten matches in all competitions, scoring 68 times in total and conceding just nine times.

Tomorrow, Goring's side travel to play Brighton and Hove thirds (2pm) in a bid to extend their run to 11.

THen, on February 11, comes the crunch top of the table clash with Horsham at Kingsham (12.15pm).

Win that and Chi will be on course to lift the Premier Division title at the end of March.

Chi eye up extending unbeaten run as Mavericks come to town

Pagham still aiming high Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com PAGHAM chaiman Tony Shea says the Lions are still in it to win it despite sitting 11 points off the top.

THe Nyetimber Lane side started the season with lofty ambitions and for the first few months of the season were more than up to the challenge.

But a disappointing December saw Mark Bennett's side fall off the pace and they currently sit fourth.

Recent weeks have seen the Lions pick up their form again, with Saturday's 3-1 home win over Horsham YMCA making it five unbeaten in the league.

With 14 games to go starting tomorrow away at Littlehampton Town (3pm), Shea is confident his side can lift themselves up the table by the end of the season.

Shea said: "THe management still think they can win it.

"THat's the aim, obviously it's a big ask but we want to finish as high as possible and keep working as hard as we can."

Pagham's 3-1 win at home to

Horsham YMCA last weekend came courtesy of goals by Kieron Pamment (2) and George Cody.

But the victory was soured with a bad injury to Liam Humphreys, who injured his ankle after falling badly.

Shea said: "Liam has torn ligaments in his ankle. It didn't look good at the time it happened but it was dealt with really well by the emergency crews on site.

"We wish him all the best."

Next up for Pagham is a short trip to Littlehampton, a side that Bennett knows well, having guided them to the SCFL Premier title two years ago.

THe Lions have already beaten the Golds twice this season. But Town have improved and are slowly pulling themselves away from the relegation zone.

Shea said: "THey've added a few players we had at the start of the season and I know they are trying to build a side for next season.

"THere's a lot of friendly rivalry but it is a game that I expect us to win."

CHICHESTER City are looking to extend their unbeaten league run into a sixth month as they welcome relegation contenders Worthing United to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm). Miles Rutherford's side are currently third in the SCFL Premier, having not been beaten since the start of September.

Chi kept the streak alive last weekend, with a 2-2 draw at Crawley Down Gatwick.

It could, and probably should, have been a lot more, with Scott Jones, then Ellis Martin, giving the Lillywhites the lead. But an equaliser in the last minute by Oliver Leslie saw Chi make the long journey back from north Sussex with just a point.

Rutherford will be hoping for more than that tomorrow, even with a number of key players missing due to holidays.

Worthing United make the trip along the A27 sitting third bottom of the SCFL Premier and the Mavericks are in danger of slipping into the second tier if their current form does not improve. Having lost the last four on the bounce, Chi will be firm favourites to extend that to five and take their unbeaten streak into February.

Selsey hit four past Commoners Ne SELSEY continue to baffle the pundits by bouncing back from their worst run of the season to beat top of the table Little Common 4-1 away from home.

THe Blues went into the match having lost three in a row and conceding 15 in the process.

But Steve Bailey's side showed how consistently inconsistent they can be, keeping the league's best strikeforce at bay for most of the match.

Goals from Joseph Clarke, Lindon Miller (2) and Joe Manners sealed the surprise victory and lifted Selsey back up to tenth in SCFL Division One. With tomorrow's opponents, Storrington, (3pm) sitting directly above them, a win could lift the Blues back into the top half.

Tomorrow's match at the Bunn Leisure Stadium is the first of three at home for Bailey's side.

With that run to come, and with five games

in hand on those sides around them, the Blues must have a top half finish in their sights this season.

In the West Sussex Premier, Nyetimber Pirates, pictured below, continue to sit pretty atop the division after a tight 2-1 win against Rogate 08.

Goals from Karl Westbrook and Michael Frangou sealed the win to make it 12 victories out of 12 so far this season and keep them 11 points clear at the top.

THe Pirates have a week off but local rivals Predators will host Newtown Villa at Longbrook Pavilion tomorrow (2pm) in what is a Bognor derby.

Predators have lost four on the trot while Villa lost 4-0 to SCFL Division Two side Roffey last time out in the Sussex Intermediate Cup. Before that, Villa's last game was before Christmas so Predators will be hoping they are still a little rusty.

Elsewhere, Chichester Ladies continue to top the table of the FA Women's Premier League south west division one after a 6-0 away win to Shanklin Ladies.

Lucie Challen (2), Charley Wilson-Blakely, Jess Lewry and Molly Clark, plus an own goal, gave Liam Greenfield's side all three points in dreadful weather conditions.

Chi return to action against Larkhall at Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm).

Sids hot on the tail of Bosham's red Robins SIDLESHAM return to league action this weekend hot on the tail of table-topping Bosham.

THe Green and Golds spent last weekend comfortably dispatching Worthing Town Leisure in the SCFL Division Two challenge cup 6-0. A hat-trick from Tom Jefkins, a brace from Tom Bayley, and a Callum Dowdell strike sealed the win for Daren Pearce's side.

At the same time, SCFL Division two leaders Bosham drew 1-1 at Upper Beeding, meaning the second-place Sids are now just six points behind the Robins with a game in hand.

Both sides are in league action this weekend well aware that few mistakes can be made between now and the end of the season.

THe Sids travel to Falmer and the University of Sussex tomorrow to play mid-table

Montpelier Villa (2pm).

Meanwhile, Bosham will be looking to get that winning feeling again as they make the long trip out east to play Westfield (2pm).

Andy Probee's side have dropped points in their last two league games and will know that if the Robins are to get promoted, they need to overcome this poor run of form sooner rather than later.

Last Saturday could have been a lot worse than a 1-1 draw, with Max Kinahan striking late to earn the Robins a point.

With a Sussex Intermediate Cup semi final against Roffey on the horizon, Probee will know that the double is still possible for the Walton Lane side.

THe only side standing in their way it seems is Sidlesham.

Howell urges first placed Bognor to bounce back after Grays day Next Game

Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell is urging his side to get back on the winning track after the Rocks' 11-game unbeaten run was ended by bottom side Grays Athletic.

THe Nyewood Lane side are still top of the Ryman Premier after the surprise 2-1 defeat last weekend.

But Howell is urging his side to put that performance behind them and move the focus on to a trip to Harrow Borough tomorrow (3pm) and then Hendon away on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Howell said: "THe Grays match we will not dwell on it as I cannot believe that anything we did that day would have worked.

"We had an off day. But luckily that's not something that happens very often with the squad we have."

In a match of few chances, the Rocks thought they had escaped with a draw after James Fraser nodded in an equaliser with five minutes to go.

But after Harvey Whyte had been dismissed for two bookable offences, Grays countered and Lheureux Menga scored the winner deep into stoppage time.

A chance for the Rocks to immediately bounce back on Tuesday at Burgess Hill Town

was halted by the weather just 20 minutes before kick off.

It means Howell's side have had to wait a week to blow those Grays blues away, with a trip to Harrow Borough scheduled for tomorrow.

THen it's back to north-west London to face second bottom Hendon, a side that have not won in the league since the start of January. THey did, however, beat Bognor 2-0 at Nyewood Lane in November.

Both sides are in the bottom third of the league and have struggled in recent weeks.

But, as shown at the weekend, Bognor have struggled against some of the so-called lesser sides in the division, dropping points against sides like Merstham and Burgess Hill.

Howell said: I think we've struggled against sides towards the bottom.

"THe league is tough so if we lose to sides down the bottom people think we are doing bad. But sides lose to everyone regularly as anyone can beat anyone."

And as for avenging the Hendon defeat?

Howell said: "I don't really worry about it.

THey were better than us on the day. We have 16 games to go and we will try and get as many points as as we can.

"I've always said we will have a blip and it's all about how we recover. We may lose again this weekend but it's just about getting back on track as soon as you can."

Rocks wary of fixture congestion ROCKS' fans will know the feeling all too well.

As February rolls in, this is crunch time, when every game matters and the fixture list shows very few free days in which to squeeze all the fixtures in.

In previous years, that has hampered Bognor's charge on all fronts. But this year, so far, it does not look to be too daunting.

THat can all change very quickly though.

Nights like Tuesday do not help, when the players, officials and fans made the trip to Burgess Hill Town all fired up for the match, only for it to be called off 20 minutes before kick off.

Manager Jamie Howell said he did understand the move but questioned if it could have been done a little sooner.

He said: "To be fair, the extra games were a real hindrance last year but I don't think it's nearly as bad this time round.

"We don't know yet if Harrow Borough on Saturday will go ahead yet but so far we have been quite fortunate."

One player who may not be around for the resceduled match against Burgess Hill is onloan striker Elijah Adebayo, pictured right.

THe Fulham man has added a real threat upfront for the Rocks, netting four times in his

five games at the club.

But with just one more week on the initial one month loan deal, Howell is still unclear if the 19-year-old will be sticking around for a bit longer.

Howell said: "We will speak to Fulham after Saturday and see where they are.

"If they want him to stay, then fantastic, he

has been excellent for us. We will just see what they want to do."

Howell also indicated that he was looking at making a further addition as the season builds to a climax.

He said: "I'm pretty happy with the squad.

I would like one more but the squad we have has been doing well for us so far."

IT'S been a disappointing week in the grand scheme of things.

Playing at home against Grays, who are bottom of the table, really, we should have comfortably beaten them.

To lose the way we did, with us having so much possession and not being clinical in front of goal, was really disappointing - especially when you consider they only had two shots on goal and grabbed a last minute winner.

THat was a bitter pill to take.

In a funny way, though, I would rather lose games to sides that will not win the league than lose to say Leiston or another of our challengers.

To not play well and lose is a bit of a wake-up call, though.

For some reason, everything we did against Grays just did not click.

Whether it was being half a yard too slow, taking too many touches, not taking enough touches, there was that little something missing.

We were keen to make up for it against Burgess Hill on Tuesday but the weather stopped that.

It was a real shame as the way we were during the warmup it was clear that everyone was up for the game.

I thoroughly expected us to be back at the races.

I was so annoyed then for the match to be called off so soon before kick off, especially when the weather was exactly as was predicted.

When things like that happen as a player, the simplest thing to say is that we are all really frustrated.

Midweek matches are normally fine but you do have to be very organised.

As a teacher, I just have to be careful with my preparations - things like organising no school fixtures on those nights, planning my transport ahead and making sure I have the right food and right drinks at the right time during the day.

Usually, I will get the train to work and then go up with Alex Parsons. Or sometimes I will drive, leave as close to 3.30pm as I can and then go back to Havant to take the lads up

from that end.

With the floodlight problems they have up at Burgess Hill, we had to make sure we were there even earlier for the 7.30pm kick off.

As soon as arrived, I knew the game would not be on.

THere were puddles on the pitch. With all the rain that had come down, and with the rain that was forecast, there was no way the match was going ahead. It's just so frustrating for everyone who had made the journey.

We move on, though, and next up is Harrow and Hendon.

THese matches come at an important time and I feel the next three games could be defining for our season.

Traditionally, we do not do very well at Harrow, as their pitch is so bad it is a bit of a leveller.

But we did do well there last year and they are struggling a bit so that's in our favour.

THen it's on to the 3G surface at Hendon which does suit the way we play.

THen it's back at home to face Dulwich, who have been picking points up off everyone.

I know it will be tough but, if we pick up nine points from nine, that will set us up really well for the run-in.

As players we do not tend to look too far ahead.

THe way we do it is by thinking about three or four game spells and then working out a potential return from those games.

It will stay like that until towards the end of the season.

When we get to the end of March or the start of April, then we will start looking at the bigger picture.

Regardless of the results, though, the mood in the dressing room is always hugely positive. At Bognor, we always have an unbelievable team spirit and because of that we can always do things no one would expect.

Everyone accepts what they have to do as a team and I think that togetherness has created this opportunity to have a go this year. THat's a credit to the management.
