College head's cash warning HEADTEACHER Mark Anstiss has warned his sums don't add up at Felpham Community College. He is facing a six figure shortfall in his £6.5m annual budget because of a lack of government funding and increased costs. Mr Anstiss was one of the West Sussex heads who have sent a letter to schools standards minister Nick Gibb - who is also the MP for Bognor Regis and
Littlehampton - in their WorthLess? campaign calling for improved money from the government. He said: "From April 2017, the WorthLess? campaign was requesting £200m interim funding for West Sussex schools which works out at £200 per student. "This would have given the college about £220,000 and would have covered next year's possible deficit. We have
made numerous cuts and savings but due to increased costs - like employee NI contributions - even with granting any additional interim funding the government is taking it away with the other hand in 'stealth charges'. We will still be about £200,000 short on the school budget. "There will be limited ways to save money as we have done so much already."
Like many colleagues in West Sussex, Mr Anstiss reduced staffing levels last September, cut options at Key Stages 4 and 5, increased class sizes and made cuts to his pastoral provision for the some 1,400 students at his Felpham Way site.A new national funding formula has been put forward by the government in an effort to correct an historic Turn to page five
