Ray's gift to help Pagham FORMER Pagham Parish Council chairman Ray Radmall has given a sixfigure sum to save the village.

THe late Mr Radmall left the sizeable bequest in his will. His generosity will enable the community company which has been set up to carry out essential scheme to fulfil its plans.

His successor, Cllr Peter Atkins, said the incredible gift was typical of the desire by Mr Radmall to do everything he could to

help Pagham.

"Ray was absolutely devoted to Pagham.

Anything he could do for it, he would.

He always said he would leave us some money and that's just what he has done," he said.

"THere were two matters that Ray spent his last ten years on - one was the strategic development of housing planned for Pagham and the other was to have good sea defences."

Mr Radmall, 72, passed away last February. He had lived on the Pagham Beach estate for decades and was a parish councillor for some 20 years. He chaired the local authority for about 13 years.

Cllr Atkins revealed the bequest at the latest meeting of the parish council.

He told its members about the frustrating situation of the Pagham Flood Defence community interest company, as it tried to fulfil its approved scheme to

cut a channel in the Church Norton Spit and stop it forcing the tides in and out of Pagham Harbour from scouring the beach along East Front Road.

THe gift from Mr Radmall will allow this project to go ahead once it receives final backing from Arun District Council, subject to the Natural England and the Environment Agency's approval.

A BOGNOR REGIS takeaway at the centre of a police investigation is to stay closed until at least the end of March.

THe Istanbul Grill has been shut since early last month after allegations three women in their 20s found pills in the food they bought there.

THe news of its continued closure came after the premises licence which allowed the business to sell food into the early hours daily was revoked by councillors.

THey backed an application by Sussex Police on the grounds the prevention of crime and disorder and public safety had been undermined at the premises in High Street, run by Afshin Ali-Zadeh.

After the Arun District Council licensing sub-committee hearing, Sussex Police's licensing officer for West Sussex, David Bateup, said the initial six-week closure ordered by magistrates expired on February 14.

"But a number of people involved in the investigation had bail conditions and one of the conditions is that they can't go to the shop and open it up again and continue the business. As far as I am aware at the moment, the premises is still shut but my colleagues in Bognor Regis are keep a close eye on it on a day to day basis to ensure public safety."

THe bail expired on March 30, said Mr Bateup. "It may be the situation will be reviewed before then and bail may be extended or it may not be. My CID colleagues are looking into the matter," he said.

THe committee was told the incidents

which caused the investigation occurred around 2am last December 29. THree women customers ordered food at the takeaway in which pills were allegedly found. Sussex Police barrister Peter Savill said Viagra pills were found on the premises during a search after the allegation was made.

"Two of the pills were missing from the packet found on top of a wall-mounted paper towel dispenser.

"You can see how it looks. Pills identical to the ones found in the food storage area in your shop are found by a customer in her takeaway," he said.

He said police also found it hard to access CCTV, a section of which was shown to the sub-committee, because Mr Ali-Zadeh was unable to give a password.

A translator, addressing the subcommittee on behalf of Farsi-speaking Mr Ali-Zadeh, said: "He does not believe that is the truth.

"His pills are blue and those found in the food were blue and white."

He said Mr Ali-Zadeh had been wrecked by the incident. "THis is something that has ruined my life. My wife has separated from me - I have a seven-month-old girl and boy aged seven - because she doesn't believe me. I am unable to work. Please think of me as a human," he said.

But he admitted he had not properly read the licence and its conditions for Friday and Saturday night security and a working CCTV. He took over the takeaway last May and the licence was issued to his business on September 11, 2019.

Planned store's signs backed SIGNS for a proposed convenience store in Aldwick have been approved.

Arun District Council has backed the proposals by One Stop Stores for the lit and unlit signs on the former Ship Inn. More than 80 objections to the scheme at the Aldwick Street building were received by Arun.

But Amber Willard, a council planning officer, says in her report: "Given the extent of the advertisements already on the site, it is not considered that the proposal would give rise to a significantly unacceptable adverse impact upon the visual amenity of the building, with the signs predominantly replacing those already in place.

"Whilst the signage alters the appearance of the building due to

the colour proposed, with previous signage in place, the alterations are not considered to result in a significant visual impact on the area or heritage asset, additional to that which is already achieved, in which a refusal is justified."

One Stop wants to install three fascia signs, a hanging sign and three other signs. Protesters said they would be out of keeping in the area of special character, were inappropriate, would distract drivers and would degrade the building.

One Stop's plans for a store have been put on hold by Arun for a traffic survey. A community share scheme to help to raise the ÂŁ700,000-plus needed to re-open the pub is being prepared.

THeir latest Ofsted rating, published on January 16, branded the school in North Bersted as Good across all areas, saying the pupils enjoy coming to school and being part of ‘Team Bartons.’

THe final report, led by Linda Appleby, said: “THe school values of ‘independence, respect, communication, happiness, responsibility and creativity’ are well understood by pupils. THey demonstrate these in all areas of school life. THis means that pupils are kind to each other and work well together.

“Pupils work hard in lessons and do not give up if they find their work difficult.

Staff have high expectations for pupils and

encourage them to do their best.

"Leaders have made sure pupils are taught well and are learning the skills that they need to be ready for secondary school.

Pupils behave well in class. THey enjoy their lessons; they find them fun and exciting.

“Pupils feel safe at school. THey say that everyone is welcomed and that they make sure that no one is left out. THey told us that bullying is very rare. THey know that staff would deal with any problem quickly.”

No one was more pleased with the result than headteacher Kate Powell.

She said: “THe children were amazing during the two days and you can’t fake that.

"THe examiners were down to earth - if things hadn’t been right, they would have told me but they were very complimentary about all of the children’s attitudes and work ethic.

“We’re prioritising doing the right things at the right time and that’s what has led to

our improvement. If you want to do better all the time you’ve got to have areas we want to improve so we can make it really, really amazing for the children.

“We’re striving for the best and it’s not about us, it’s for the children and that’s the most important thing. We’re not going to just stop trying now the Ofsted has been done, it’s about the children and the standards, we can always improve.

“Our parents agree. THey did a survey and 100 per cent supported what we were saying and that’s the great thing about when it goes well with Oftsed.

“She liked the Team Bartons idea and I’m really proud of that because I introduced it when I arrived. THat’s done its job, it’s a good benchmark with the children so I think that’s why we do hold all the values so dear and the children do too."

But Cllr Atkins told the council: “We are still seeking to get key conditions which are added to the planning permission to cut the spit satisfied before the Environment Agency, Natural England and Arun District Council will allow us to go ahead.

“We just have to sit back and wait and see. We have taken responsibility as a village for the spit. It’s beyond my natural ken why it has taken so long to get nowhere. Nature intervened two or three years ago and cut the spit - but in the wrong place.”

THe current situation was to wait to see the effect on the spit of recent storms.

“It is probably going to be cut again but, again, in the wrong place and we will still get this terrible left-hand turn as the tide comes out of the harbour," said Cllr Atkins.

THis enabled the shingle to build up to the south and meant the spit carried

on growing along the East Front Road coastline.

Cllr Atkins said: “We have got until June and then the planning permission runs out if we have not started anything.

“We don’t know if doing one aspect, like building the bird island, will be enough to satisfy the fact we have started work and can’t be stopped or not.”

One of the biggest sticking points was the island, known as tern island, in the planning permission because of its intended use for the protected species of little terns. THey have used the spit for nesting since it was created some 15 years ago.

Cllr Atkins said a peninsula site surrounded by electric fencing to deter predators, such as foxes, would be as effective in keeping the birds safe as creating an island for them.

He added the flooding at Climping in recent weeks, where the beach groynes had become badly damaged, showed that form of coast protection would fail to protect Pagham.

"Large waves could again cause a small amount of water and spray to affect nearby fields. But, because tides will be lower, and will continue to fall

THe agency re-imposed its flood alert for the village on Monday, from earlier this month when the sea overflowed into fields and roads, and removed it two days later because it believed current flood impacts would be minimal.

` Post office back RESIDENTS will be pleased to hear that West Meads post office will reopen next month.

THe post office in Aldwick will return to its previous location at 10 THe Precinct at 1pm on March 27.

A new postmaster will operate the branch from 9am-5.30pm on weekdays and 9am-12.30pm on Saturdays.

Global Technologies Racing has applied for approval of the light industrial floorspace on land east of Fontwell Avenue.

Coast link to country plan

THe route of some five miles will connect the coastline to the countryside in the national park.

Initial backing for Arun District Council's principle of the connection for walking and cycling journeys has come from councillors. THey agreed the idea should go out for public consultation to gain residents' views about the vision.

Cllr Isabel THurston (G, Barnham) said: "I very much welcome this. I am happy to see this approach.

"THere are lots of positive things here and I hope we can achieve them."

Cllr David Huntley (I, Pagham) said: "THis is an exciting bit of planning. THe idea to have a coherent connection between the coast and the South Downs is excellent."

THe green infrastructure masterplan was revealed to Arun's planning policy subcommittee on Tuesday.

Karl Roberts, the council's director of place, said the aim of the green infrastructure network was to create a corridor which linked Bognor Regis through Felpham, Yapton, Bersted, Barnham, Aldingbourne and Eastergate to the South Downs at Fontwell.

"It would be broadly aligned with the north-south route of the Lidsey Rife, taking the opportunity to link the proposed strategic development sites at the former Lec airfield (employment next

to the glider club), Barnham/Eastergate/ Westergate (new housing) and Fontwell so as to make use of, and link with, the green infrastructure that could be delivered in these areas."

THe proposed route would start at the junction of the seafront and Gloucester Road and carry on past the Arun Leisure Centre alongside the railway line.

It would pass under the A259 viaduct, skirt the Lidsey wastewater treatment works, go through the thousands of new homes planned for around Barnham, cross Wandleys Lane to reach Fontwell's London Road and an upgraded A29 underpass.

Along the way, ideas such as a Lidsey wetland park, new wildflower meadows and woodlands, play areas and community orchards and allotments would be created.

Funding for the route would come from developers for its sections in their sites. THe links would need to be funded by Arun.

THis meant its completion could not yet be given, said Mr Roberts. But he warned: "If we don't take the opportunity now, we will possibly lose it and end up with something we are not necessarily happy with."

Cllr Tony Dixon (I, Aldwick E) said his pleasure at the proposed link was dimmed by the prospect of so much new housing.

"We are losing a huge area of green space.

I think this is making the best of a bad job," he said.

THe consultation's results are due to be given to the sub-committee this autumn for the route to be backed as council policy.

Warwick Davis did a double take when he spotted the Yoda haircut created by stylist Daren Terry.

Tory's stance causes clash

By Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk A COUNCILLOR has been accused of acting childishly after standing down over changes to the cabinet structure.

Cllr Terrence Chapman (con) resigned from the Audit and Governance Committee at Arun District Council after clashes regarding the decision to scrap the current cabinet structure, which has been running for 20 years.

THe system will be replaced by a set of committees, a decision championed by the council’s ruling Lib Dem party and backed by Green, Labour and Independent members.

However, the decision has been fiercely opposed by Conservative members. Cllr James Walsh said: “THis was a childish gesture from the Conservative group, as they were not getting their own way.

“THe matter had been decided by a majority vote at full council after they filibustered at that meeting. THrowing your toys out the pram is not a mature way for elected councillors to behave.”

At the meeting on February 13, Cllr Chapman said he declined to serve further on the audit and governance committee.

In a statement at the meeting, he said: “I wish to make a statement on the minutes of this committee covering the special meeting held on December 19 and covering subsequent issues.

“THe outcome of the meeting was that the governance working party’s proposal on a change to the governance arrangements

of this council were not supported at that stage and that any decision on a change be deferred to enable a members seminar to be held with more information on the proposed options.

“When this recommendation was debated at the governance working party on January 6, it was not supported.

Subsequently, at full council on January 15, the recommendation from the working party was debated.

“During the debate I proposed an amendment to refer the matter back to the working party and that the working party sought further independent assurance from this committee before bringing their recommendation back to full council.

"Among others, you and the vice-chairman voted against this.

Subsequently, both you and the vicechairman, among others, voted for the recommendation from the working party.

“It is my personal view that in both of these votes the constitutional requirement for this committee to provide independent assurance of the adequacy of the governance and risk management framework so as to best protect the council’s reputation was undermined.

“On a related issue, I think it sad to see the independence and status of this committee being undermined by party political whipping and this may prove to be a very slippery slope. THerefore, I decline to serve further on this committee and I ask that this statement be included in the minutes of this meeting.”

New plans show town's bright future HOPES to make the town more vibrant and welcoming have been announced.

THis comes after consultation between town centre agencies and the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District.

Published by the BID, the plans address the four areas identified by businesses as most important to them.

It targets making Bognor Regis a well known, welcoming town with better parking, and an active town centre at night. THe plans include lots of colour, lighting, extra planting and public art.

BID co-ordinator Heather Allen said: “While we’re proud of the events we’ve delivered in 2018 and 2019, we want to change direction this year, concentrating on two key events that are different to what’s available in other local towns and cities.

“It’s miserable being at the mercy of the weather. THat’s why this year we’re changing tack and going for installations that can be enjoyed by more people for a longer period of time, and will particularly benefit the town’s night time businesses.”

For 90 minutes every week, Chez Moi in Aldwick Road is the venue for a group of residents to come together and learn to speak French, or if they already know it, speak it better.

Member of the group, Colin Crouch, said: “Abilities vary widely, with some of us just having school French, and others coming from their holiday homes across the English Channel, where the friendships they have made with their neighbours have already put them on the road to fluency.

“But there is no hierarchy, no streaming. If you can’t find a word, someone will help out, or in extremity, Nathalie will put down her coffee and, with warmth and wisdom, convince us that it was on the tip of our tongue and that we just had to find it.”

THe group was created thanks to Nathalie NewtonYoung, who along with chef Michael NewtonYoung, encourages the members to embrace their French fascination.

With years of culinary history under his belt, Michael and Nathalie settled in Bognor Regis to bring up their three children after marrying in 1992.

In 2015, they chose a sunny spot by Bognor pier to set up coffee house, Coffee Corner, and two years later they took over what had been the Dutch Pancake House in Aldwick, renamed it Chez Moi, and dedicated it to fine French cuisine and fine French wines.

Meanwhile, Nathalie had combined mothering the children with supporting Michael’s enterprises, working with Bognor Regis Rugby Club and fostering the French language.

She holds formal classes in structure, grammar and vocabulary, but THursday mornings in Chez Moi are just opportunities for chatter, coffee, and one of Michael’s freshly baked croissants.

WORK started this week to reinforce the right-turn ban at Bognor Regis retail park junction.

Despite the alterations conducted in October last year to prevent right turning, some drivers continued to turn right, driving around or over the new islands with the potential to cause collisions.

THe work, which began on Wednesday, includes: • Bollards in the centre of Rowan Way on the junction’s western approach and centre traffic island • Bollards on the southern footway next to the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point and the western end of the segregated cycle and pedestrian facilities at the A29 roundabout • Signs on the eastbound approach to the retail park junction indicating the prohibited right turn and the correct route via the A29 roundabout • Signs on Rowan Way to the retail park’s west to indicate the need for A29 traffic to make a 180 degree turn at the North Bersted roundabout THe work will be carried out from 9.30am-3.30pm, with temporary traffic lights in place. Access to and from the retail park will be maintained throughout.

Subject to factors such as severe weather, the work is scheduled to be finished by Friday, March 6.

THe original project budget of £131,000 included contingencies and these extra measures are expected to be met within that original estimated total cost.

Park activity for VE Day 75

By Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk A CELEBRATION of the anniversary of the end of the Second World War is being held in Bognor Regis.

THe event to commemorate 75 years since the guns fell silent in Europe will be staged by Bognor Regis Town Council - and all the community is invited to join in the fun.

THe event will be staged in Hotham Park from 2.30pm-7.30pm on May 8, the special bank holiday moved from the month's first month to the next Friday by the government for the occasion.

THe proposed programme, which is subject to alteration, features THe Last Post being played by a bugler at 2.55pm.

THis will be followed at 3pm by a rendition by bagpipe of Battle's O'er and the new tune of VE 75 Years written for the anniversary.

THe nation's toast to the heroes of the Second World War will be made as the music ends.

THe formal occasion will also feature the recitation of Cry for Peace by Bognor Regis' town crier, Jane Smith, at 6.55pm.

A town council spokeswoman said: "It is hoped to include bands performing music from the era, along with food concessions selling traditional food.

"THere would also be space for people bringing their own picnics. We hope that attendees might wear vintage clothing to add more of a feel to the event."

THe town council is also hoping to speak to residents about their memories of the occasion when the nation took to the

streets to celebrate the defeat of Germany in 1945 after almost six years of fighting.

"Prior to this event, we are hoping to include in our annual town newsletter an article and photographs regarding people's memories of VE Day as it was celebrated by local people in the town," said the spokeswoman.

"We are hoping that there may be some residents of Bognor Regis who will remember these celebrations and may have stories and photographs they are prepared to share with us and, perhaps, have published in our newsletter and on social media.

"We would be happy to come out and visit to write down the stories and copy any photographs to include in the newsletter if we are given permission to do so."

THe town council has a tradition of staging successful community events in Hotham Park for national occasions.

THe most recent included the royal weddings of Princes William and Harry.

Both attracted large crowds to join in and watch the ceremonies on a large screen.

Archive records of VE Day show largescale celebrations in Bognor Regis town centre and along the seafront.

Dancing couples filled High Street in the morning followed by a group of boys and girls riding repeatedly around the area on their bicycles, shouting, waving flags and ringing their bells.

THe jubilation continued into the evening and included a 'snake' of up to 200 revellers zig-zagging from one side of THe Esplanade to the other and into High Street.

A bonfire was lit at the West Park car park before the crowd broke up into the night.

Town club is set to mark a special day SPECIAL events to commemorate VE Day are being considered by the RAFA branch in Bognor Regis.

Members are looking at staging the activities to mark the bank holiday weekend of May 8.

THe government has moved the first of the month's bank holidays from Monday, May 4, to the following Friday to enable activities to be held by communities for the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945.

Any activities which will be held by the branch at its Waterloo Square club will continue the series of events.

Among those currently taking place is a series of talks. THe most recent featured Chris Burstow, curator of Bognor Regis Museum, last week.

Tree planting plan by council to remember important date AN oak tree is to be planted by Pagham Parish Council to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. THe occasion was agreed by the council's members as the most fitting way of ensuring the date in early May was commemorated.

But the planting will be a low-key occasion to avoid the planning and time needed to arrange a public event.

THe most likely site for the oak to be dug in at is the grassed area at the Sea Way and Pagham Road junction.

Cllr Peter Atkins, the parish council's chairman, said: "It is a very visible site and it would be the third tree there and

would not overcrowd the plot."

THe area is currently being used as a compound for equipment for gas pipe renewal works along Pagham Road.

THe parish council is also looking to install a bench around the same time.

THis would be a memorial to its former chairman, Ray Radmall.

Its likely location is the concrete area on the beach in front of Pagham Yacht Club once it has been cleared of shingle from the storms.

Council clerk Nichola Swann said Pagham Village Hall was booked for the bank holiday weekend to rule out using it as a venue for a community event.

` Fish and chip fine A FISH and chip shop owner from Bognor Regis has been fined for what could have been a fatal mixup.

Sercan Vural, of Lennox Street, Bognor Regis, was fined £800 and made to pay £1,500 in costs and an £80 victim surcharge following an investigation by West Sussex Trading Standards.

On February 14 at Horsham Magistrates Court, Vural pleaded guilty to selling sausage and chips containing soya to a trading standards officer posing as a customer with a soya allergy.

Peter Aston, West Sussex Trading Standards team manager, said: “THe consequences of poor allergen control can be deadly.

"Even though no one was harmed on this occasion, someone with a severe food allergy could potentially have died.”

During a follow up visit, it was clear that Vural had failed to act upon the warnings issued to him on previous occasions.

Despite asking for a soya free meal, when the sausage and chips was sent for analysis it was found to contain soya.

Vural could give no evidence that his staff had received allergen training either.

As a result of this incident, Trading Standards brought charges against Vural for selling unsafe food.

Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for environment, said: “THe dangers of poor allergen management should not be underestimated.

"I urge other food businesses to make sure they have proper allergen controls in place.”

Jess says yes for charity JESS BROWN is saying thank you for the warmth and love of a local charity as she prepares for the London Marathon.

Jess, 29, first decided to apply for the London Marathon as a way to raise as much money as possible for St Wilfrid’s, a charity close to her heart.

“I’ve chosen St Wilfrid's as the charity is incredibly dear to me. THey care for both my maternal and paternal grandmothers, who sadly passed away as a result of cancer.

“I remember the warmth and love that surrounds the charity so well and the ability to create such a peaceful environment for end of life care was amazing.

“Doing the London Marathon is the best way I know how to say thank you to them for looking after both of my nans at the very end of their lives.”

Taking part in the marathon is part of Jess’ ‘30 before I’m 30’ challenge. So far she has already done the Ride London, a number of half marathons and the Berlin Marathon, as well as a range of nonsporting challenges, such as learning to drive.

“I’ve always been a keen sportswoman,” she said, “having rowed semiprofessionally for a number of years so the physical challenge really appeals to me.”

As part of the fundraising in the lead-up to the marathon, Jess is hosting a 70s/80s disco on March 14 at Seasons, Nyewood Lane.

Jess said: “I wanted to do something fun, something that would encourage people to come out and have a good time and also feel like it wasn’t just a typical fundraising event – that they would also have a great night!

“I’m hoping that anyone with an interest in raising money for St Wilfrid’s will come along. It’s open to the public and I want to encourage families and groups to come down and be part of it.

“THere will be a 70s/80s disco, nibbles and a raffle with some great prizes, including a free haircut at Buzby and Blue in Chichester. I’m also looking for more local businesses to supply raffle prizes.”

Fundraising is easy as pie PHIL TURNER and his team will have a special reason to bid for glory at this year’s British Pie Awards.

THe Turner’s Pies team will be launching a new initiative in place to try to boost the coffers of a deserving local charity.

Plastic packaging piled up as shop goers were asked to think again about their habits

THe Return the Plastic event took place outside Sainsburys in Shripney Road.

Event organiser Liz McCallum said: “THe intention is to chat to customers and raise awareness about the sheer amount of single-use and unnecessary plastic packaging which is used.

“We encouraged shoppers to take the packaging off the goods they have bought, for example, plastic from loo rolls, and we then put that plastic into a shopping trolley manned by a volunteer.”

THe team of ‘return the plastic-ers’ was made up of Liz, Jayne Bond, Maureen Atwell, Deborah O'Reilly and Green Party member, Cllr Carol Birch.

Shoppers were engaged in conversation through answering multiple choice questions on some plastic pollution facts.

THey were also encouraged by the idea of potentially winning a reusable coffee cup, supplied by Harry and Esther, who run Refilled in Drapers Yard, Chichester.

People were also invited to leave their unwanted plastic packaging in one of the trolleys, which would then highlight the quantity of packaging accumulated over a short time.

“Many shoppers signed our introduce a deposit return scheme petition,” Liz said.

“THis would involve Sainsbury’s and other supermarkets introducing a machine which would allow people to bring back

their plastic bottles and aluminium cans which initially they would pay a little more for, but from which they could get money back.

“With 13bn plastic bottles sold in the UK and only 43 per cent being recycled, and an estimated 700,000 becoming littler and going into the wider environment, we desperately need these or similar systems.

“Recently, Sainsbury’s has been quoted in the press saying that within the year they are planning to sell milk and fizzy drinks in glass bottles. Let’s hold them to that.

“With one third of the plastic we use coming from our supermarkets, we desperately need action and initiative from them. Why is there such a slow response?

“Our seas, rivers and verges are clogged with these bottles, which are just thrown away and become litter. It’s clear that those supplying these products also need to take responsibility.

“People are people, we could say it’s the fault of those throwing away the bottles - they are the ones who need to be taken to task. But in reality, we don’t have the capacity to recycle that many items.

“THat’s why introducing both a deposit machine (with the manufacturers and suppliers being those responsible for the taking away of the bottles collected) and supermarkets introducing reusable, returnable glass bottles, is the only way forward."

Carol Birch joined the team at the event.

She said: "THe Return the Plastic event went well, there was lots of interest and many people were using the reusable vegetable bags.

"THere were some who were surprised

that many tea bags have plastic in them.

"THere is still need to do much more, and I would like to see a further reduction in single-use plastic. Does recycling give us a false sense that the problem is solved as it is not recycled into reusable packaging? Much of our plastic is still burnt or put into landfill.

"THe Green Party will continue to campaign for stronger legislation.

It would be wonderful to see the supermarkets working together to develop packaging made from plant material that could be composted. A deposit scheme to refill bottles would also help. THere are many developments being made and customers can encourage this by choosing not to buy products that are packaged in plastic.

Jayne Bond said: "Our Return the Plastic event on Saturday was a good way to spread more awareness with consumers.

"Most shoppers are already re-cycling, but may be not aware that the packaging on fruit and vegetables and lots of the dry goods in supermarkets is not re-recyclable.

"It is really important that we tackle the issue of singleuse plastics because they are killing our wildlife, causing acidification of our oceans, and are now in the food chain.

"We can only buy what is on offer to us, so it is up to big companies and supermarkets to offer sustainable or re-usable packaging, not as a choice, but mandatory."

` World day of prayer WOMEN, men and children are invited to come together and pray with the women of Zimbabwe at the annual World Day of Prayer.

Taking place at St THomas a’Becket Church in Pagham on March 6, the service, entitled Take Up Your Mat and Walk, has been written by the women of Zimbabwe who, through prayer, readings and songs, share the challenges they face and the hopes they have for the future as they journey towards reconciliation.

Traffic fears for new homes

Peter Kenney said the prospect of the cars and vans travelling up and down Maypole Lane was horrifying.

THe traffic will be generated by up to 45 dwellings for which developer Redrow Homes was granted outline planning permission in June 2018.

But Mr Keeney, who lives at Longacre Park, off Maypole Lane, said it was a poorly maintained single track carriageway with a 60mph speed limit. It lacks a pavement and is bounded on its northern side by a bank topped by trees.

"Apparently, it has been ruled by the planning authorities...Maypole Lane does not qualify for widening to two lanes. What seems to be have been conveniently ignored is that there are already a further 29 dwellings up the lane with at least 30 vehicles together with the extra traffic to and from the Maypole Inn. "THe vision of the comings and goings of building construction vehicles and the damage to above and below ground services is horrendous, to say nothing of trying to negotiate safe passage to and from North End Road with its staggered junction (to Ford Lane)."

Mr Kenney, 76, has lived at the park home site towards the end of the lane of some 500m for the past six years. It contains 22 homes.

"THere are at least 30 cars going up and down the lane from the site and the neighbouring dwellings already," he said.

"When the new homes are built, each of them will have at least one car. If they are

going along the lane, and a refuse vehicle is coming in the opposite direction, what is going to happen.

"THis proposal has got people's backs up. People who are already here say they are not going to give way.

"You can imagine what it is going to be like. THere are going to be a lot of rows."

THe situation was caused by the fact the access to the new homes was off Maypole Lane to their northern boundary instead of North End Road. THe land is described as being to the west of North End Road and south of Maypole Lane.

Mr Kenney said: "THe old stables which are alongside North End Road are to be demolished as part of the planning application for the housing.

"I can't see why that part of the site doesn't become the access to the homes, rather than Maypole Lane.

"It is in a decent location but they are going to use it for pedestrian/cycle access only. THe development ought to be stopped in its tracks until the whole thing is rethought."

Redrow Homes is seeking detailed planning approval for its proposals.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "We did impose a condition on the outline planning permission for the submission of detailed design and construction drawings for passing places on Maypole Lane between the access/egress and its junction with North End Road."

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: "We have received technical drawings for the proposals which are being considered by our implementation team.

"We have not received a discharge of condition application for approval of the passing places from Arun."

There are some big changes to our events programme this year, with a focus on delivering two major events, whilst supporting businesses who want to deliver mini-events and promotions, such as town centre trails and competitions.

We’re moving away from street performers whose acts are always at risk from bad weather, and we’re moving away from doing the same things as other local towns and cities.

We’ve decided to invest in installations, such as impressive lighting displays and artwork that can be in place for weeks, rather than hours, that can be located all around the BID Area rather than the two streets licenced for performances and, crucially, that will equally benefit the night time businesses. This does mean that we won’t be delivering mini-events just because it’s a calendar holiday, but we will be delighted to work with and support any businesses that would like to organise something.

Dear Editor, YOUR article on February 14 - Council boosts efforts against empty houses with tough action - made me wonder about the future of the Old Manor House in Felpham.

It has been empty and in a sad state of disrepair for decades - not only an eyesore but a waste of much-needed accommodation.

It surely has the potential to be a very elegant building and garden; an asset to Felpham's mix of architectural styles as well as a comfortable home, thereby decreasing (even if in a small way) the need for yet more new housing development on our surrounding fields and floodplain.

Can we now hope for some 'tough action' after all these years?

Linda Collins in Issue 198 concerning the food waste collections.

Firstly, you get a small oblong box with a lid that will either fit on your kitchen window sill or by your normal kitchen bin.

Secondly, inside the box, is a biodegradable bag.

THirdly, when the bag is full (and remember it is not too big), it's tied up and goes in a special bin with lid outside. As everything is in biodegradable bags, nothing smells.

And it isn't food like dinners that go in the bags. It's things that everyone throws away - tea bags, coffee granules, egg shells and, if you don't have a compost bin because you don't have a garden, all vegetable peelings.

Most councils, I can only quote Buckinghamshire, collect every week.

THe scheme starts with them giving you the bags. THen you buy some. Maybe other councils give them free.

THey should also give a list of the food stuffs which can be collected.

Dear Editor, THE report (BID's bright ideas for town, Bognor Regis Post Issue 197) appears to be another in a seemingly endless stream of reports announcing the revitalization of the town.

It rested uneasily with another article (Arun told to get a move on) which was also focused on regeneration initiatives. THis seems to suggest that there are at least two groups focusing on this.

Are they headed in the same direction and what authority do either of the groups (Business Improvement District and Bognor Regis Regeneration Board) have in relation to the development and implementation of their respective individual proposals? How are they synchronized?

THe BID proposals suggest plans to make different areas (which ones and why these?) more vibrant (meaning?) and welcoming through the use of colour lighting(!), planting and public art.

Just what does this really mean in detail and how will success in making BR different be measured? Greater retail footfall was suggested but that is only one key indicator. Why the circumspection on the proposals?

THe regeneration board's proposals appear to be focused on much larger initiatives and particularly the enhancement of the Regis Centre and Hothampton.

THe same question arises. Why these particular initiatives and what authority does the board have in relation to the development and funding of proposals?

With the local civic society routinely gunning for the local authority on almost any new initiative this all sounds as if it too is heading for oblivion.

For more than three decades there have been endless proposals, schemes, agencies, working groups (at what cost?) all focused on enhancement and improvement.

Remember the dreaded blue sheds in the London Road precinct? What credence can be placed in the BID and regeneration board proposals and what are the realistic chances of implementation?

With further retail development on the periphery of the town in prospect, the critical retail/commercial core is likely to require something really spectacular if all the aspirations mentioned in the reports are to be delivered.

I have been an inpatient in four different hospitals, including St Richard's. In all of them I have had delicious vegetarian food.

If Mr Clay does not like the meat he eats, then perhaps he should go vegetarian, like me. He might then enjoy his food, while sparing the animals in the process.

Top TV hair stylist visits the college HAIR students at Chichester College enjoyed a master class in styling by one of the best in the business.

Renowned hair stylist and head judge of TV's Extreme Hair Wars, Martyn Holmes visited the college to give the students a special demonstration in styling and answering their questions about his background and his life in the industry.

He then spent time working with the students as they aimed to recreate the glamorous look themselves.

Lucie Collucio was one of the students enjoying the opportunity. She said: “It’s nice to meet someone and for them to be honest with you about everything in hairdressing, and how far you can actually go.

"I’ve learnt a lot today, particularly the technique of cooling the hair off once we’ve tonged it. I think that will be really helpful for me going forward.”

This was Martyn's second visit to Chichester College, as he works closely with Lee Stafford Education to deliver training and inspire students at Lee Stafford's partner colleges around the country.

Martyn said: “I think it’s important for people like me to come in, so that younger people can see that I’m just the same as them - I’ve just been in the game a lot longer.

"Sometimes when we look to our peers they scare us, but there’s no need to be scared. These are the people who you can learn from.

"By me coming in and being myself, people can see I’m just a normal bloke.

I’m just a normal Essex boy.

"I’ve worked hard, I love my industry and, for me, I can’t take all this knowledge to my grave so it's important to share it with the future generation.”

f The new recruits for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service

New fire recruits WEST Sussex Fire &and Rescue Service has welcomed six more retained (oncall) firefighters to its ranks, after they successfully completed their two week initial training course.

The new recruits, including one for Bognor Regis and one to Chichester, will now join retained crews in their communities across the county to provide additional fire and rescue capability.

Retained firefighters often have fulltime jobs elsewhere, but live or work within close proximity to a fire station, and are paged to respond to emergencies as and when they are required.

Assistant chief fire officer Jon Lacey, who began his career with the service as a retained firefighter, met the new recruits at Horley Fire Station, where they took part in a pass-out parade in front of friends and family.

He said: “Becoming a retained firefighter takes real determination and drive, and each of our new recruits have demonstrated that they have what it takes to help keep their communities safe.

“Over the next two years they will

continue to develop their skills and build on what they have learned over the last two weeks, with a number of training opportunities open to them.

“It was a real privilege for me to welcome our new retained firefighters to West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

"Their pass-out came ahead of what was a very busy weekend for the service, with our retained fire crews based at East Wittering, Billingshurst and Midhurst fire stations kept very busy in the wake of Storm Dennis, which led to severe flooding in parts of the county.

"They were on hand to respond to a number of serious incidents where residents had become trapped by floodwater, but they able to get them to a place of safety.

“I do not underestimate the work our retained firefighters carry out, and I know our new recruits are all going to make a real difference to the communities they will serve, and I wish them all the very best of luck.”

The new recruits included Jonathon Loe, who will be based at Chichester, and William Middleton, at Bognor Regis.

` Self-guided trails HORSE riders are being called upon to help with the creation of a new series of self-guided trails.

The call to action comes as the South Downs National Park Authority is developing handy downloadable guides that will include some of the best circular routes across Sussex and Hampshire.

The authority is working with the British Horse Society to produce the guides – and now needs feedback from horse riders.

The authority is keen to hear from riders about where they like to ride and what their favourite routes are.

Allison Thorpe, who leads on access and recreation, said: “The national park offers some of the best lowland riding opportunities in the UK and we’re really excited to be developing this new series of self-guided trails.

“We’re keen to get all the information we can from people who regularly ride in the South Downs.

This will help us to test out the routes, take photographs and produce the trail guides."

The team is looking for circular trails of between five and ten miles, but shorter routes will also be considered.

The online resources will be available to download, print and share with fellow equestrians Initially, Allison is keen to hear from riders who use areas including Eartham Woods and East Dean.

Wellbeing month at county libraries NEXT week marks the start of Wellbeing Month across all 36 West Sussex libraries.

Throughout March, libraries will be celebrating all the ways that books, reading and local libraries can help people stay healthy and well.

Special events taking place include: • Wellbeing MOTs – offering advice, help and support on healthy diet, weight loss, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol, and more • West Sussex MIND will be advising residents about their new campaign, ‘Moving Minds’, and providing information about the mental health services they offer • Apetito drop-in and free taster - come and sample some of the delicious foods on offer from West Sussex County Council’s Meals on Wheels provider Apetito, which provides hot meals to elderly and vulnerable people across the county (Southwick library only) There will also be NHS health checks, reminiscence taster sessions, story walks for children, games for families.

Regular events include Knit and Natter, Relax with Colouring and ‘Melody for the Mind’, a singing group

All libraries will have displays of books chosen by library staff to lift the readers mood and help them feel better.

Two high Sheriffs join together celebrating emergency services

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk IN a Sussex first, the two High Sheriffs of East and West Sussex held a joint thanksgiving celebration paying tribute to the two counties’ emergency services.

Last Thursday (February 20) more than 400 emergency services staff came together for the joint ‘Blue Light Service’ at Lancing College Chapel.

The unique event was organised by Davina Irwin-Clark, High Sheriff of West Sussex, and Violet Hancock, High Sheriff of East Sussex, and attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Peter Field,and Vice Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mr Harry Goring.

The service was held at the chapel by kind permission of the head master and the governors of Lancing College.

The event gave thanks to all emergency services and associated volunteer organisations which keep Sussex residents safe.

Mrs Irwin-Clark said: “I am proud to be hosting this service with my East Sussex counterpart to celebrate our emergency services.

"The men and women of our emergency services are there for us when we need them most. Our counties are indebted to them for their courage and their sacrifice. It is absolutely right that we should honour their incredible

service in this very special way.”

The order of service included readings and an address from the Rev Paul Collins, previously a Met officer, now Minister of Immanuel Church, Chichester.

The heads of the emergency services including Sussex Police chief constable Giles York, the chief fire officers of West and East Sussex, Sabrina Cohen-Hatton and Dawn Whittaker, South East Coast Ambulance Service operating unit manager for Brighton, Tim Fellows, county president of St John Ambulance, Mrs Caroline Lucas, and RNLI Eastbourne, coxswain Mark Sawyer - also shared reflections of the work carried out by their services.

` Burglary charge POLICE have charged a man after he fled from a stolen vehicle in Pulborough.

A man was washing his car in Nutbourne Common on February 23 when he quickly popped back inside his house. During this time his wallet, which was inside the vehicle, was stolen.

THe suspect ran away and got into a stolen car, before colliding with another vehicle and fleeing the area on foot.

Officers attended the scene and conducted an area search and a man matching the description provided was detained.

Terrence Winter, 46, of High Street, Bognor Regis was charged with burglary dwelling and theft, theft from a motor vehicle, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

He was remanded in custody and was due to appear at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

` Council irate A DECISION to withdraw support from a joint council body which discusses road schemes around Bognor Regis has been criticised.

Aldwick Parish Council chairman Lillian Richardson said she was furious at the move.

West Sussex County Council has said it is no longer willing to provide democratic services for the area's highways and transport subcommittee.

Cllr Mrs Richardson said: "I was very disappointed when I heard this news. I thought it was shocking."

Anger over prison buildings

COMMUNITY inspectors have attacked the government for failing to improve Ford Prison.

THe prison's Independent Monitoring Board said the lack of action to upgrade the buildings at the category D open prison, pictured right, was to be deplored.

THe board's latest annual report, published on Monday, said it was the 11th consecutive year the need for work had been highlighted.

"Accommodation at HMP Ford is in an increasingly poor state despite local projects to improve living conditions," the report states.

"A radical solution of replacement accommodation has again failed to be delivered by the Ministry of Justice.

"Prisoners still do not have hygienic way to clean their dishes on A wing and instead have to use bathroom hand basins.

"Problems regarding the kitchen equipment were constant throughout this reporting period. THe freezers in the kitchen are now on individual electrical circuits, which is a great improvement.

"THis reporting period has seen no improvement in the efficiency of the prisoners' laundrette, with machines regularly breaking down and their repair proving short term.

"HMP Ford has made huge progress this year in getting more prisoners out every day for paid work and it is simply unacceptable that, when they go out, they have no reliable source of clean clothes."

THe independent monitoring board has 14 members. THey visited the prison 599 times in the year to October 31, which is covered in the latest report.

THe board's chairman, Joanna, Lady Woodcock, said: "Over the past 12 months, the number of prisoners from HMP Ford who go out to do purposeful paid work, attend academic and vocational education courses, have initial accompanied day release and subsequent home leave, has increased to 200 per day.

"Much of this success is due to the positive involvement by local employers who see the value to their businesses of employing these men, many of whom gain permanent employment with them on release."

Part of this work has seen the Serving THyme coffee shop, gift shop and garden centre within the prison opened to the public in recent months.

THe temporary licences under which the prisoners leave the prison are designed to prepare them to be better placed to resettle into the community and to reduce re-offending. THey number 4,000 a month compared to 2,600 a year ago.

THe board's members say prisoners in HMP Ford are treated fairly and humanely by its staff.

A total of 1,191 prisoners spent time at the prison - with its 544 capacity - during the year of the report. THe prison houses male prisoners. Many are lifers but none is serving sentences for sex offences.

Prisoners returned to closed conditions numbered 170 in the year. THis compared to 199 in the previous year.

"THe infiltration of contraband, mostly drugs, mobile phones and SIM cards, continues to be a major challenge for the prison management," the report adds.

"It is regrettable that the governor's proposal to improve the security of the reception area has been rejected by HM Prisons and Probation Service."

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK

February 28-March 5 JANE AUSTEN'S Emma is the go-to film this week, and opens with clever, rich, restless queenbee Emma, who prepares for the wedding of her governess, a pairing she credits to her own matchmaking skills but she is hardly in a rush to find a match for herself, though she follows news of a particularly eligible bachelor, the ever-elusive Frank Churchill (Callum Turner), with discreet interest. CHILDREN will be able to discover the wonders and mysteries of science thanks to a new science lab.

Toy company Learning Resources has teamed up with Butlin’s to offer preschoolers fun science lab and STEM adventures, exclusively on their Just for Tots breaks.

The first round of workshops will kick off in March and will be available throughout the year.

“For over 80 years, Butlin’s Bognor Regis has been a family favourite for holidays, creating lifelong happy memories,” said Dennis Blackmore, founder of Learning Resources.

“Many families across the UK recall with fondness visiting as children, and later taking their own children to Butlin’s.”

A LITHUANIAN pianist is the next musician to be performing as part of the Bognor Regis Music Club. The concert will take place tomorrow at 7pm.

Ugnius Pauliukonis will be playing works by Haydn, Chopin and Debussy.

One of the leading pianists of Lithuania’s new generation and member of Making Music’s Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artists scheme, Ugnius has been performing professionally since the age of six.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: “We are looking forward to a fabulous recital from Ugnius, who has qualified for the highly prestigious Making Music Young Artists Scheme.

"He will be playing virtuosic works including Chopin’s Fourth Ballade and his Sonata in B flat minor, as well as Debussy’s Feux d’artifice and Reflets dans L’eau.”

After studying with Eilina Stropaite, Donaldas Racys and Valentina Berman, in 2010 Ugnius left Lithuania and moved to the United Kingdom to study at the Royal Northern College of Music where he is currently working with Graham Scott and Andrew Wilde as a part of his International Artist Diploma.

Ugnius has won numerous awards, including the RNCM Gold Medal, the Schubert and Mark Ray Prizes, the Recital Prize and a prize at the International Amy Brant Piano Competition in Birmingham. Recently, Ugnius made his debut at the Wigmore Hall (London) and Bridgewater Hall (Manchester).

As a soloist, Ugnius has played with the BBC Philharmonic, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and Kaunas Symphony Orchestra.

He has given solo and chamber music recitals in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and all the Baltic states. In the past, Ugnius has worked with famous musicians such as Lang Lang, Jean Efflam-Bavouzet and Matti Raekalio.

A FELPHAM man broke a Guinness world record raising money for a children’s hospice.

Jamie Alderton box jumped the height of Mount Everest in just over 22 hours, raising over £21,000 for Chestnut Tree House.

Jamie visited Chestnut Tree House one week before the box jump and was blow away by what he saw. “One of the things that really hit home when I went to visit Chestnut Tree House was their tag line ‘For the Now’ as it really resonated with me,” he said.

“They told me a story of a dad riding his motorbike into the house just so he could show his son his new motorbike as he couldn’t get out of bed to see it,” Jamie said.

“When you have a child with a life-shortening condition you never know how much time you have with them so everything you do needs to be taken action on as fast as possible. It’s about making the most of every moment. I couldn’t be prouder to be raising money for such an incredible hospice”.

The money he has raised is enough to pay for three days of fun, love and laughter for local children and their families who know they don’t have long to stay together.

A BOGNOR REGIS resident has undergone a life-changing experience thanks to Arun Leisure Centre.

Before Brian Watts, pictured below, started classes at the Freedom Leisure venue in a completely different situation to now.

“I could only walk about 100 yards at a slow pace and would often have to sit down,” he said.

Brian was overweight and struggled to walk and suffered a lot of pain, which was visible during his classes.

Since attending classes, equipped with the latest artificial intelligence technology, Brian has lost weight and can now walk around a supermarket without stopping.

His balance has improved and he can now stand on one leg.

Georgie Glaves, one of the fitness instructors at his Obesity UK meetings in Bognor Regis, said: “Brian is a very outgoing and happy person, who gets on well with everyone and keeps the class fun.

“He has come on in leaps and bounds, has lost a lot of weight and is now working in rehabilitating his knee and back.”

This can be a harsh reminder that if you feel something is not right in your body…do something about it. Whether that means cleaning up your diet to help alleviate symptoms, visiting a nutritionist to get professional help, or booking an appointment with your GP to discuss your worries.

Whatever it is, take action. Don’t just sit and do nothing. Dame Julie Walters has just revealed in an interview that she had been diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer 18 months ago, which means the cancer had spread to nearby lymph nodes but not to distant body parts.

She had two primary tumours in her large intestine and was told by her specialist that they had found an abnormality in her intestine, and feared it was cancer.

Turns out that it was, and she has undergone treatment and seems to be out the other side and given the all clear by her team of experts, which is fantastic news.

So, what are the signs and symptoms of colon cancer?

• A persistent change in your bowel habits, including diarrhoea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool • Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool • Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain • A feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely • Weakness or fatigue

REDUCING SATURATED FATS (in animal products, processed foods and takeaways) can help prevent bowel cancer

• Unexplained weight loss Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. When symptoms appear, they'll likely vary, depending on the cancer's size and location in your large intestine. Numerous studies have indicated that a diet too rich in red meat, especially processed meats, is associated with a heightened risk of colorectal cancer.

Individuals who eat red meat alongside eggs, cheese, and other fatty foods, as well as refined starches, on a frequent basis had an almost twice the risk of developing rectal or colon cancer than those who favoured a plant-based diet.

According to research a 50-gram portion of processed meat, such as bacon or salami, eaten every day increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer by 18 per cent.

How can we best prevent bowel cancer?

1. Eat a healthy high-fibre diet Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables, and reducing saturated fats (in animal products, processed foods and takeaway). There is strong evidence the eating fibre can help prevent bowel cancer by reducing the risk of problems such as constipation and inflammation of the bowel wall.

I would recommend at least four servings of fruits, eight servings of vegetables, and one small portion of wholegrain foods with each meal. Think rainbow colours on your plate with every dish!

2. Engage in regular physical activity There is strong evidence that exercise cuts the risk or bowel cancer and polyps, and a sedentary lifestyle increases it.

Get at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity, five or more days a week.

3. Don’t smoke Smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to develop bowel cancer, and

even more likely to die from the disease.

4. Maintain a healthy body weight Obesity is linked to bowel cancer, especially in men. And the evidence points to abdominal obesity (or belly fat) as a key factor. Maintaining a healthy body weight, for both men and women, also reduces the risk of a number of other diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.

5. Drink alcohol in moderation Heavy drinking may increase risk of bowel cancer. If you do drink, one standard drink per day for women, two standard drinks per day for men is

the government guideline. I think everyone should have Monday to Thursday as a no alcohol zone!

6. Drinking plenty of fluids Detox teas are a great addition to anyone’s diet as they help to cleanse the liver and keep the body in a constant state of flow. Good hydration also helps with regular bowel movements, which is essential when it comes to colon health.

Dandelion, nettle, lemon grass, ginger, licorice root are all easy and simple teas that are good for keeping your digestive system happy. Drink at least four cups per day.

Refreshments and light lunches will be served. These sessions require volunteers to meet, greet and support. You will need good communication skills. Volunteers must be willing to learn (particularly about dementia), be adaptable, with good listening, understanding and clear language to enable each participant living with dementia to enjoy the session.

Lay Member on our Board of Trustees – Nautical Training Corps The Nautical Training Corps’ objectives are to promote the development of young persons in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, particularly by educating such persons in all aspects of the history and practice of seamanship and seafaring. They have a vacancy for a Lay Member on their Board of Trustees known as the National Council, which governs the 13 Units of the Nautical Training Corps which are situated across the South of England. As a Lay Member you will take on specific duties / activities to help the Corps grow its membership. This could include help with some fundraising applications or undertake some research as and when required.

Volunteer Health and Safety Competent Person – PACSO PACSO is a Chichester-based Charity that supports parents and carers who have a child or young person with a special educational need or disability. They provide play and social opportunities for children and young people and their siblings, and much needed respite for parents and carers in Chichester and Arun districts. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join PACSO as a Volunteer Health and Safety Competent Person for 2 – 4 days per month to assist with putting in place structures, arrangements and policies relating to Health and Safety and to support a legally compliant and safe working environment. Working hours are flexible and can include some home working with a requirement to spend some time at the office in Chichester.

General Volunteer – The Regis Centre The Regis Centre provides professional and commercial entertainment in the theatre to the people of Bognor Regis, as well as facilities for local people to engage in the performing arts. Volunteers are required to carry out various tasks within the Centre. There are various opportunities such as working in the Charity shop, Cafe, Box office, Administration, Stage work, Cleaning and general DIY. When there is an evening show some volunteers act as Ushers, cafe helpers and ice cream sellers.

Aldwick's history includes royalty and wrecks Area has a distinctive past WHERE is Aldwick? To many it seems to be an area which is between Bognor Regis and Pagham, with slightly blurred edges. The reason for this comment is that sometime addresses on the boundaries are noted as Bognor Regis, Rose Green or Pagham.

However, for some, the inclusion of Aldwick into their address is quite important. I came across various histories of the area, which informed me that the parish of Aldwick had been created as recently as 1985.

Its history was originally within the parish of Pagham where it had nestled since the Middle Ages. It was principally farmland with farmhouses and cottages for the various farm workers. The main farms were situated at Aldwick Willowhale and Grange Farm.

Originally known as Aldewycke, it was a tithing of Pagham and it would seem to have been the administrative centre of the Canterbury estates around the 14th century. Part of the land was sold to Sir Richard Hotham in 1789.

With his arrival into the nearby area of Bognor, wealthy persons started to arrive and prosperous merchants began to build their own seaside homes. Six such houses were built along the coastline between the area now known as West Park and Barrack Lane.

In this area around the 1800s there was a military barracks built, almost facing today’s pond, and was one of the defence points against

the threatened invasions by the French under Napoleon.

At this time, Aldwick farm was separate from the manor. The Manor was bought by John Fletcher in 1835 and passed to his son, William HB Fletcher, in 1899. The area contained many fine houses and cottages. There was an iron chapel, inn, grocer, coastguard station, the beginnings of a postal service and, by 1896, a small school.

According to the 1807 Origin & Description of Bognor ,the area was once known as Aldwick Green and was noted as "the vicinity of this village to Bognor, and its pleasing situation on the seashore, tempt some visitors to reside in it during the summer, in preference to any other spot in this district".

As the area expanded from the 1920s, it became known primarily as a residential area with, for example, Aldwick Place, having been the estate of Baron Grant, who had died in 1899.

The Baron became notable for his ability to lend money, property speculations and company promotions.

During his residency, he entertained lavishly and became the deputy lieutenant of Tower Hamlets and was also elected MP for Kidderminster.

Other notable people in the area were William Fletcher, who purchased several parcels of land and, latterly, Roland Rank, who purchased a

large area of farmland, just north of Fish Lane.

The sales particulars for Aldwick Place in the 1930s remarked that it was situated in a "premier residential position with direct frontage to the beach immediately west of Bognor". The sales particulars continue with the information that "Aldwick is a favoured coastal village immediately west of Bognor Regis on a delightful stretch of the Sussex coast surrounded by beautiful countryside".

Other visitations took place in 1929 when King George V arrived to convalesce in the parish of Pagham at Craigweil House. Of course, ultimately, Bognor became known as Bognor Regis and in 1933 extended its boundaries to take in the 1,800 areas of Pagham, Aldwick, Bersted and Felpham.

With the increasing need for housing, smaller properties were constructed in the Rose Green area. One of the features of these homes, around this time, was that all newly constructed homes had large gardens and were fenced in on all their boundaries.

Later, this was to be changed, to allow for a more open impression to the estates. Many of the houses were built into self-contained estates and this became a feature of Aldwick, with many having their own shops and facilities and also a residents' association.

Aldwick has recorded numerous important events, other than the visit of the King in 1929.

For example, the well known house - Paradise in Dark Lane - was destroyed by fire in 1909.

It had been built in 1802 for Sir Thomas Brooke Pechell and was seen as a construction that typified the penchant for the picturesque which was fashionable at that time.

Referring back to the 1807 guide, the report on Sir Thomas Pechell’s home remarks that it stood "on a delightful eminence, commanding a variegated and extensive prospect, and at

whose foot the sea breaks with unavailing rage, you discover, hanging over the beach, a thatched cottage, more remarkable for its simplicity than for its architectural ornaments".

Another well recorded event was the wrecking of the 96-ton French brig, Carnot, which was stranded on Aldwick beach in December, 1912. The vessel carried a cargo of 110 barrels of herrings and 160 tons of cement. It is still possible to see remains of this cement off Dark Lane.

Education also forms a part of the Aldwick story with the beautiful building of Craigweil Lodge being renamed Martineau House when it was used as a seaside school from 1955 by a trust set up in Birmingham for sending disadvantage children to the seaside.

What a different world it would have been for these children - Birmingham to the seaside! The school finally closed in 1987. Aldwick Place was also involved in education when for a time it was used as a boys' preparatory school around 1914. There was also the Dr Barnardo’s home for boys on the area now known as St Margaret’s Close and finally there was Sefter School - a school that still holds so many memories for people in this district.

Aldwick does have a rich history and the original local historian of the area was Lindsay Fleming, who lived at Aldwick Grange, from where, in 1949/50, he produced his History of Pagham of three volumes. He died in 1966, aged just 64.

He left an invaluable document providing detailed historical information on Pagham, Aldwick, Rose Green and Bognor Regis.

More recently, the book, The Paradise Rocks,

by Michael Alford, has been published, which paints an incredible view of the area in the 1930s while encompassing the surrounding area from the perspective of a child.

Post comes to Blues' aid in a thrilling finish CHICHESTER RFC held on for a 22-22 draw after visitors Medway hit the upright from a matchwinning conversion attempt in London One South.

Chi picked up three points and are now unbeaten at home in almost five months.

The hosts made eight changes to the team that lost at Cobham last time out. Martin O’Callaghan, Zac Conoly and Chris Johnson came into the pack, Josh Goodwin, Cam Hopkins and Toby Golds returned in the backs with Sam Drayson and Ryan Spriggs on the bench.

Chichester kicked off up the slope with the wind behind them and led after two minutes.

Great work from Chris Johnson secured the ball and a drive from O’Callaghan moved it deep into Medway territory. From the ruck Goodwin fed Rhys Thompson, running a diagonal line, and his pass to Tyrese Makasi beat the last defender which allowed the young hooker to dive over in Vulture’s Corner for an unconverted try.

Medway’s large and experienced pack dominated the breakdown and scrum and they scored two converted tries within 15 minutes.

Chichester fought back and, after Medway were reduced to 14 men by a yellow card, a great drive from the pack shoved Chris Wallace over the line to dot down

The hosts edged ahead three minutes later when Thompson’s long kick and chase down by Hopkins forced a pressured clearance straight to Tom Blewitt, who went on a run before offloading to O’Callaghan to charge over the line for a try on his 100th appearance for the 1st XV. Blewitt converted to put Chi 17–14 up.

Nick Blount crossed the line before half-time again but the try was chalked off for an infringement.

Medway drew level within two minutes of the restart with a windassisted penalty.

Chi penned Medway back for the opening 20 minutes of the half but were kept out by a well drilled defence.

Medway lost a man to the sin bin after 57 minutes but Chi could not exploit the advantage.

With ten minutes left, Golds collected his own kick down field before the ball was moved through

the hands of Harry Seaman, Thompson and Liam Rowland to Drayson, who made 20 metres before being brought down by two defenders.

Golds received the offload and dived over for Chichester’s fourth try and a bonus point.

The conversion was missed to open a 22-17 lead.

Blues spent the remainder of the match defending their try line and on 85 minutes, and with three Chichester players in the sin bin, Medway breached the Blues’ defence for a try.

The conversion struck the post and the match ended in a draw on balance a fair result!

Man of the match was Ben Deavall.

Chi face acid test at Ashford DARIN KILLPARTRICK says Chichester City’s trip to Ashford United will be a good gauge of their progress in BetVictor South East.

United are top of the table on goal difference from Hastings United, who have played a game less, but are many people’s favourites to take the automatic promotion spot.

City, who had their Tuesday night game against Herne Bay postponed, are seventh with games in hand on all the sides above them.

It is a comfortable position after claiming promotion last season and, despite a growing backlog of fixtures, City could still force their way into the play-offs.

But Killpartrick, who flew back from coaching the England Colleges team in Italy last Saturday morning, knows Ashford will be up there come the end of the season.

Coach Killpartrick said: “Without a doubt they and Hastings are the two teams battling for who goes up in the automatic spot.

“They are both exceptionally good teams so we shall just look at it as a benchmark of where we have progressed to.

“That is how I shall look at it and I will be able to measure where we are up to now.”

Killpartrick was happy with the 2-1 triumph over Hythe Town last Saturday at Oaklands Park but still saw room for improvement.

and Scott Jones secured Chi’s third league win in a row although substitute Alex Brown pulled one back with two minutes to go to give home fans an anxious final few minutes.

Killpartrick said: “We played some good stuff, which was nice, and we keep saying that the process will take care of the outcome and Saturday actually proved that point.

“However, as a team we still need to learn to defend as one in vital moments of the game.

“We are a very young and inexperienced team at this level and we’re just starting to

get game understanding. It is going to take time but it is starting to come.

"There are still parts of the pitch where I need to tighten up on with my coaching.”

Haitham produced a cool 47th-minute finish for the opener while Jones headed home a 78th-minute second.

Josh Clack is serving a three-match suspension.

Chi have tried to solve a problem area of their Oaklands Park pitch this week by drilling 40 150mm core holes and filling them with shingle to aid drainage.

Cup final shootout pain for battling Chichester

By Mikki Collins sport@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER City Ladies' best performance of the seasson was not enough to clinch victory in the Sussex Women’s Challenge Cup Final against Crawley Wasps.

Chi City were the underdogs in the lead up to the final having previously lost 7-1 to Wasps at the start of the season.

But the green and white army took the FAWNL league leaders all the way to penalties before suffering the agony of a 4-3 shootout defeat.

Ellie Russell headed home a Naomi Cole cross after 24 minutes to put Wasps in front at Culver Road against the holders.

The Wasps had the better of the first half but could not keep up the momentum as Chi moved up a gear in the second half.

Wasps were not able to deal with Tash Wild’s pace in the lead up to Becca Bell’s 55thminute equaliser.

Bell tapped home after Gemma Simmonds's shot was parried into her path.

A stand-out performance from Issy Foster in goal kept Chichester firmly in the game as the final went into extra time with no further goals despite

Wasps enjoying the majority of possession.

In a nerve-jangling shootout, Amy Martins scored to put Chi in the lead and Crawley missed the target completely with their first penalty to put the cup within touching distance for Sophie Blakely’s side.

However, Crawley’s experience shone through as they held their nerve to win 4-3 and lift the cup for the first time.

Chi chairwoman Caz Evans, who has stepped down from the role this week, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of this team right now.

"They pushed Crawley all the way and showed what they are capable of. I’m gutted for them but excited for the future of this young side.”

After an incredibly disciplined performance, first team manager Sadie Blakely said “This is credit to all CCLFC players, coaches, staff and committee. This wouldn’t have happened without these amazing people so thank you all but it’s onwards and upwards now until the end.

Sportinbrief  Boxing BOGNOR ABC’s Phoebe GriffithsJohnson’s national title hopes are back on track.

Griffiths-Johnson eased into the semifinals of the England Boxing National Youth Championships at Coventry but the tournament was halted after serious crowd trouble at the venue on Saturday, February 15.

England Boxing have rescheduled the semi-finals and finals for tomorrow and Sunday at Birtley ABC in the Tyne, Tees and Wear region.

Griffiths-Johnson beat East Midlands representative Leah Gunton (Guntons Community) in her quarter-final at the The Sports Connexion, Coventry in her 48kg to 51kg class.

She was scheduled to meet Spennymoor’s Carmel Carey (Tyne Tees) in her semi-final before the premature end.

TZ Runners rock at Brighton half ANOTHER weekend and another storm for the Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners to take on.

Last weekend the Brighton Half Marathon was on the cards with 34 club runners fighting the 40mph winds battering the south coast.

Christo Oosthuizen surprised everyone again with a phenomenal time of 1:21:19.

Peter Lee and Jack Penfold opted to use the race as a training run to try and hit their goal marathon pace, the pair helped each other and finished together in 1:27:42. Danny Mahoney, who never struggles to get his race head on, got stuck in and finished in 1:30. Juliet Stallard finished in 1:33:42 with Duncan Stephenson-Gill just 30 seconds behind.

Gary Smith, who is training for the London Marathon, finished in a personal best (PB) time of 1:35:30. Lee Boniface and Jess Thomson finished under the 1:40 mark while Daryl Fairbrother, Sarah Zacal, Carolyn Stapley and Keith Hardwell all went below 1:50.

Neil Pacey ran an impressive time of 1:52 just ahead of Gary Pidgeon. Lee

Hayward recorded a personal best of 1:54:17 just ahead of Sean O’Donnell, Marzena Sowinska, Karen Vilday and Kirstee Porter, who also went under two hours for a new PB of 1:57.

Lisa Wadey ran her first half marathon and finished in a time of 2:06. Stuart Thomson kicked off his birthday celebrations with a 2:16, just ahead of Lisa Broad and Mark Desmond who both ran personal bests of 2:17.

Leigh Paige, Donna Vincent, Zoe Hemes, Rebecca Holden and Beth Suter all finished in under 2:25, it was a PB for Holden and Suter’s first half marathon.

Jade Fish, Tina Ede and Julie Ede finished in 2:31, 2:32 and 2:32 respectively with Tina recording a new personal best.

Rounding off a great day of results were Wendy Morris (2:43) and Karen Butcher (2:47) who both ran their first half marathon.

Debs Pacey, Lisa Robinson, Karen Blackman, Jo Hall, Alison Lindsey and Jackie Williamson all completed the Hammeldown Hammer Half which is a very tough half marathon in Dartmoor.

The selection team opted to provide the youth of the club the opportunity to make their mark on senior rugby as nine colts featured.

There were four in the first team, including debutant Elvis Millen, and five in the Royals as they went to Hove for a friendly.

A turbulent start for the first team saw them concede a try and penalty within the first ten minutes. Trailing 8-0, Josh Burgess's men regrouped and went on to score several tries of their own before the half-time break and open a 19-8 lead.

Despite some contentious officiating, and the absence of sinbinned players, Bognor continued their scoring ways and proved too hot to handle for Farnborough, going on to run up a 55-18 thumping.

Contributions to the scoreboard include a hat-trick for captain Josh Burgess, two for speedster Freddie Hayes, one each for Lee Balchin and Shane Stevens, and two from colt back rower Jamie Foote off the bench.

PAGHAM staged a thrilling fightback to earn a 2-2 draw at Eastbourne United but were left ruing a late chance to snatch the win.

The Lions trailed 2-0 to goals from Sam Crabb and Paul Rogers at The Oval but Toby Funnell pulled one back on 77 minutes and Jake Heryet got the leveller with four minutes left in the Southern Combination League premier clash.

There was still time for a winner but Cian Tilley could not find the unmarked Lindon Miller in stoppage time as United keeper Jordan Hawkins made a vital interception.

Pagham boss Kerry Hardwell said: “The boys deserved a point after all the hard work they put in and we could have had three at the end of the game but a draw was a fair result.

“With a few changes to last week’s squad the boys really did battle throughout and it’s great for me as I now have 19 or 20 players I can call upon at anytime to put a shift in for me and the club.”

Pagham’s win took them up to 14th after last Saturday’s game but they head to table toppers Lancing tomorrow.

Hardwell said: “We’ve now picked up 13 points out of the last six games and find ourselves slowly climbing the table.

“We head to Lancing this week, which will no doubt be a tough test, but we go there full of confidence hoping to get something from the game.”

Crabb opened the scoring after 52 minutes when he headed home a free-kick and nine minutes later United broke away and doubled their tally through Rogers with a shot across

the goal and into the far corner.

Pagham thought they had pulled one back in the 68th minute when Miller scored from a sublime Lukas Franzen-Jone pass only to see it wiped out for offside.

After 77 minutes they did halve the deficit when sub Funnell blasted a shot home at the near post.

On 86 minutes Heryet got clear on the right and after cutting inside, shot hard towards the goal, only to see keeper Hawkins parry the ball.

It went straight back to Heryet to gleefully slam home the equaliser.

Selsey returned to action with a superb 2-1 win over Bexhill United in SCL division one.

United took the lead through Jamie Bunn direct from a corner after two minutes.

Selsey levelled through Ryan Morey when he rounded the keeper midway through the half after being played in by Callum Dowdell and slotted home.

The game appeared to be heading towards a draw until the last ten minutes when Bexhill had a player dismissed and James Cowan scored from the resultant free-kick.

Selsey head to Shoreham tomorrow (3pm KO).

In division two, Bosham are at Rottingdean tomorrow (2pm KO).

The Robins lost 3-2 at home last Saturday to Rustington.

Adam Thompson struck in the 60th and 88th minutes as the hosts produced a much improved second-half display after trailing 3-0 at the break.

JACK PEARCE admitted there was little to enjoy about Bognor's win on Wednesday night.

In fact, the Rocks boss was left scratching his head after witnessing his side scrape a 1-0 victory at BetVictor Premier strugglers Lewes.

It had started all so well, though, as Bognor eased into a second minute lead when James Crane did well to dig out a cross from the left and Tommy Leigh glanced his header low into the bottom right corner with goalkeeper Nathan StroombergClarke well beaten.

Bognor had other chances but Lewes grew into the game and had strong claims for a penalty turned down when Aaron Cosgrave went down under challenge from Jerry Puemo.

Keeper Amadou Tangara also kept out a Cosgrave header with an instinctive save in stoppage time as Rocks banked the points at the Dripping Pan. Pearce said: "It was not a great game of football and the only pleasure I took out of it tonight was the result!"

Bognor, usually so composed on the ball, were guilty of gifting the Rooks possession too often.

Pearce said: "We had nine players who kept making mistakes and giving the ball away, which you don't usually

see from us.

"It was quite interesting as Keaton Wood had his best game of the season, while the keeper played very well.

"They were the only two players who came out of the game with real credit.

"The others all worked hard but were technically not very good on the night whereas those two were technically good in what they did."

But Pearce did admit there were moments when Bognor did look like world beaters.

He said: "There were flashes every now and again when you wondered how the same players who kept passing to the opposition under no pressure surely could not be capable of that!

"There were flashes of brilliance but generally we weren't on top of our game and we were a bit fortunate with their appeal for a penalty.

"On another day it could have gone for them.

"They are down there and when you're struggling those decisions don't seem to go your way."

Bognor are back in action tomorrow at home to 12th-placed Bowers & Pitsea.

Defender Joe Cook, Jake Flannigan and Doug Tuck are still sidelined through injury.

Blake frustrated by Boro loss ROBBIE BLAKE was left frustrated after Bognor failed to turn chances and possession into goals in their 2-1 defeat at Haringey Borough.

The Rocks' push for the play-offs suffered another dent despite a battling performance in gale force winds which shaped the contest.

Bognor fell to a sucker-punch 82ndminute goal by Anthony McDonald at Coles Park after a goalless first half.

Haringey took a 47th minute lead when Georgios Aresti’s low shot beat Amadou Tangara.

Rocks levelled after 61 minutes when Harvey Whyte peeled off his marker in the box to head home Tommy Leigh’s corner.

Hopes of a win evaporated when McDonald slammed home after Roman Michael-Percil initially had penalty claims waved away after going down on the edge of Bognor’s area.

Coach Blake said: “We have had so many chances and ended up losing to a team who have had two chances in the game.

“It’s the story of our season. We haven’t been strong enough and resolute enough defensively, that’s the crux of it and it has cost us again."

He added: “I can’t fault the commitment and attitude and I felt we played really well and never in a million years should we have lost the game.”

He continued: “We got into so many good

positions in the final third and we blew it.

“We lacked composure and belief and that is very frustrating.”

Blake was impressed with the way Bognor tried to manage the conditions, especially in the second half when Haringey had the wind behind them.

Kristian Campbell, who has had a previously successful stay at the club during their National South days, has re-signed and will be available, having watched from the sidelines on Wednesday.

WE GOT the win at Lewes on Wednesday night and that was the main thing.

It was not pretty but we got what we needed and our hosts at the Dripping Pan will be feeling a bit hard done by I am sure.

Lewes will be disappointed they did not get anything at all out of the game because of the amount of chances they created.

But there was plenty of resolute defending from us and Keaton Woods stood out, along with goalkeeper Amadou Tangara.

Keaton did not put a foot wrong in the whole game, which is unusual as he usually makes at least one mistake.

Amadou was absolutely superb in goal as well, keeping a number of shots out.

To put it mildly, we were very lacklustre with our passing at the Dripping Pan. James Crane also managed to get a booking after the final whistle when he obviously said something the referee did not like.

It was not the best, and in honesty, it did not fill me with any confidence despite the win.

Lewes are struggling at the moment. They have not won at home for a while and the crowd was very low, less than 300, when they often get 700 to 1,000 and more in the past for these games.

It was a midweek game though and also a rescheduled fixture.

They did not miss much as we won ugly in the end.

We could not even blame the pitch. There were patches in the middle and the goalmouth but other than that it was not that bad.

It was not a great match so - on the up side - we are due a really good performance and, hopefully, that will come tomorrow at home against

Bowers & Pitsea to keep the momentum going.

The victory took us up to eighth in the BetVictor Premier but we have a tough run coming up if we are going to reach the play-offs.

Bowers & Pitsea are in a good run of form at the moment so it will be a difficult one.

In fact, we have a difficult run of matches coming up in the run in. We have Cray away, Hornchurch at home, as well as Horsham to play away, so it is not the easiest of run-ins.

I believe we need to win pretty much all of them if we are going to make it.

I cannot see many of the teams around us dropping too many points in the last 12 games.

We do have two or three games in hand over some teams, which gives us a chance to overhaul them, but I am a firm believer in having the points on the board.

Games in hand mean nothing until you have won them.

We played better at Haringey Borough last Saturday and we deserved at least a draw there.

The conditions were very difficult and windy. So much so that at one stage in the first half Haringey just could not get the ball out of their half. They would clear it and it would not go anywhere!

They utilised that in the second half whereas we didn't in the first and they got the win.

Kris Campbell is back at the club which is great news for the Rocks.

I remember him scoring a brilliant solo goal against Dartford for us.

He can play full-back or out wide and he has great pace.

He loved it with us at the Nou Camp the last time so I am sure that is why he has come back.

Hopefully he plays tomorrow.
