THe Friends of the Ship Inn chairman said yesterday the decision by councillors to put the plans to turn the former pub into a convenience outlet on hold was a

sensible one.

Mr Beam, who stated his objections to the scheme to councillors along with fellow Friend Terry Mullins, said after the meeting: “It is to the members' credit that they voted for the people and not for big business.

"Nobody spoke in favour of the One Stop application. Members were suspicious and distrustful of the evidence put before them.

"THe One Stop store would degrade life in

Aldwick village. THeir proposed increase in deliveries and the enormous size of their vehicles would block Aldwick Street and present severe road safety dangers for local people as well as higher levels of noise and exhaust pollution."

THe unanimous vote by Arun District Council’s development control committee on Wednesday calls for an independent road safety audit to be carried out around the site in Aldwick Road.

Councillors also want more detailed vehicle tracking information to be provided to enable the effects of large lorries delivering to the store on passing traffic to be assessed.

Cllr Ricky Bower (C, E Preston) proposed the deferral. He said the tracking details provided only showed cars passing the lorries.

A POTENTIAL £25,000 boost for Bognor Regis town centre was agreed by a single vote among councillors.

THe town council members backed the idea of putting the money towards a high street innovation fund being created by Arun District Council by 7-6.

But Cllr Adam Cunard (I, Hatherleigh) said he was concerned the money would be taken by Arun without the town council being able to control what it would be spent on.

THis had happened with previous Arun projects.

“We don’t have to be doing this now,” he said. “THis is some sort of Arun initiative to raid our cash. THis is a joke and it has to stop.”

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said the innovation fund was derived from a request by some Arun members for money to be spent on the towns in the district. THis had resulted £25,000 each for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton and a further £10,000 for Arundel being put aside.

“We were originally talking about promotions and events. We had some concerns about it being match-funding but that was never mentioned," he said.

“I am concerned that wording is too prescriptive. THe High Street is only one area of the five council wards of Bognor Regis. What about the West End and the 100 businesses down there?"

Town councillors also agreed to a put aside £2,000 for a tourism project as they backed their overall budget for the year from April.

It will see the town council’s share of the overall bill for a band D household rise by 2.92 per cent, or £3.65 a year, to finance its annual spending of £948,372.

Fire service scrutiny INSPECTORS will be taking another look at West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service this month to see if ‘significant concerns’ raised last year are being addressed.

THe service was rated ‘requires improvement’ overall with two areas – protecting the public through fire regulation and ensuring fairness and promoting diversity – judged ‘inadequate’.

THe visit by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) will not be a full inspection, and even if all the areas of concern are now up to scratch, the ‘requires improvement’ rating will remain.

A progress report from chief fire officer Dr Sabrina Cohen Hatton will be presented to a county council scrutiny committee meeting on Monday.

Looking at accusations of bullying which were raised by inspectors, Dr Cohen Hatton said: “THe HMICFRS identified two causes of concern in relation to people; the first was that staff sometimes act in ways that go against the core values which was

leading to bullying in the workplace.

“Following the publication of the inspection report, workshops have been facilitated across the service which have focused on raising awareness of the values and the underpinning behaviours.

“Values and behaviours are now an integral part of new job descriptions and training on values-based interviewing is scheduled to be rolled out to officers in January and February.”

A backlog of 833 fire safety audit was also highlighted by inspectors.

Dr Cohen Hatton said these had been cleared ‘as a priority’ and the service was now up-to-date.

Issues surrounding the use of resources, the recruitment and retention of on-call firefighters, and the availability of fire engines were also highlighted by the inspectors.

THe scrutiny committee will be updated on the progress made in these areas.

First place for Bersted Green Primary school

Bersted Green Primary School has been placed at the top of the Gov.UK leaderboard for best school in West Sussex for Key Stage 2.

THis puts the primary school in Laburnum Grove in first place, out of the 282 schools in the category. “We have a really carefully created curriculum to engage the children and do what will interest them,” said Katie Jarvis, the headteacher.

“THis was a junior school which became a primary school. We put children into every year group and that movement had an effect on the pupils’ progress.

"However, with hard work, perseverance and dedication, we have got to where we are now. And that’s great.”

In 2013, the school - which at the time was called Laburnum Grove Junior School - received an Ofsted inspection concluding

it required improvement.

After a couple of follow-up inspections, the school was transformed into an allthrough primary school and underwent a number of changes.

In 2014, it changed its name to Bersted Green Primary School and went through a major rebuilding programme, including extra classrooms.

Almost two years later, in 2015, the school was again inspected by Ofsted, this time being awarded a Good sign-off.

Fast forward to this year, and to now be top of the league tables for West Sussex primary schools is a major turn-around.

It is an achievement that not only the school is proud of, but that members of the community are also excited about.

THe headteacher said: “We started with a clear route that we were going to improve and that has pulled it all together.

“We have been quite lucky in using research practices for support. THey mean we could apply for something that we wanted and they would pay. For example, we did the excelled reading project with

Manchester University.

“We created a team of really dedicated people and our motto is 'Learning Together' on our jumpers. Our staff are really committed to pupils progress.

“We have got people who have been trained in lots of different initiatives like pupils with dyslexia and Lego therapy. We have had lots of help from schools around the area, especially the Felpham and Bognor Regis school group, FAB.” Year 6 pupils Laurelle Broun, 10, and Charlie Dixon, 11, have been at the school since it became Bersted Green Primary, in 2015.

“I especially love sports,” said Laurelle.

“Since I’ve joined we’ve got loads of new things, like the Astro patch and the trim trail, which is basically like an assault course. We go on lots of school trips now as well, it’s great.”

Charlie said the way teachers helped everyone individually was great. “If I need help, or feel like giving up, my teacher is always there to show me how I should do it, the best way for me.”

THe last pints were pulled at THe Ship Inn in 2014. Morrisons received planning permission from Arun in October that year to change the use of the building to a retail outlet.

It quickly sold the business to My Local. THe new shop was also shortlived and closed nearly three years ago.

THe building has since been empty.

But current owner, Surplus Property Investments, bought the site in 2019 and has attracted interest from Tesco-owned One Stop.

One Stop wants to vary the existing delivery schedule of one newspaper van delivery and two larger vehicles up to 10.35m in length.

THe intended weekly delivery scheme seeks up to four deliveries in 38ft long 28 tonne lorries, a maximum of five deliveries in 3.5 tonne refrigerated box vans, up to five milk deliveries using 26 tonne refrigerated lorries, 12 bread deliveries in 18 tonne vehicles, and seven deliveries of newspapers in Transit vans.

All deliveries would take place from 7am-9pm, as opposed to Morrisons’ 7am-9.30pm, except for the newspapers from 5am-7am.

Objections had been received from Aldwick Parish Council and in 113 letters from individuals.

Arun planning officer Dan Vick told councillors the plans had to be decided on whether the changes to the deliveries adversely affected the safety and convenience of motorists in the area.

“THis application has been assessed by Sussex highways, who raise no objection to any implications of the proposal on highway safety, convenience or parking provision,” he said.

He said the studies needed to show how drivers of vehicles such as refuse lorries would be able to get along Aldwick Road when deliveries to One Stop were taking place.

Cllr Martin Lury (LD, Bersted) said: “All you have to do is to go to the Aldwick Road Tesco at any time of day to see the mayhem that ensues once a large lorry is parked there.”

“THis road (Aldwick Street) is the sea road. It is an important road for Bognor Regis. It’s going to be a nightmare.”

Cllr Hugh Coster (I, Aldwick E) said the width of the road between a large lorry parked outside the store and the parking bays opposite would be 3.7m.

“Large cars are 1.87m wide each. THat’s 3.75m. THat’s not going to fit into 3.7m.

“It’s going to be absolutely impossible if you have lorries parked outside THe Ship for people to pass each way, certainly without losing their wing mirrors,” he said.

He said the number of weekly deliveries proposed for the One-Stop was far more than those agreed for the previous Morrisons store which occupied the one-time pub.

“It’s an increase of 71 per cent from 21 to 36. It’s a very significant increase.

“We have no guarantee whatsoever in front of us that the car park is going to be used for deliveries at all,” he said.

Cllr Mike Northeast (L, Courtwick) said: “THere are also businesses opposite which nobody has talked about.

“THey will also be getting deliveries during the day. If an articulated lorry is on this side of the road and

` Fatal collision POLICE are investigating a fatal collision in Felpham.

Emergency services were called at 10.08am on Friday to Felpham Way, where a heavy goods vehicle and a cyclist had collided.

THe cyclist, an 81-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her next of kin have been informed.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care. He remains in custody.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or who has dash-cam footage, is asked to report details online or phone 101, quoting Operation Kirkham.

THe meeting will take place at 7.30pm on January 22 in the Recital Hall of THe Regis School of Music, 46, Sudley Road.

THe association, which holds several social events throughout the year, is twinned with three towns, St.Maur des Fosses, a town close to Paris in France, and two German towns.

Takeaway shuts as police investigate

THe closure order was secured at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 3, and means Istanbul Grill, in High Street, must remain closed as a fast food restaurant for six weeks. It will then be reviewed.

THis follows allegations by three women in their 20s who reported finding unknown pills in a kebab purchased from the takeaway after they returned home around 2am on December 29.

In reference to the closure order, district commander, Chief Inspector Jon Carter, said: “We have taken this action to protect the community while this business remains at the centre of an ongoing investigation.

“THis is a concerning matter, and our enquiries are ongoing to examine and identify the tablets, and determine exactly how they came to be in the food.

"In the meantime, I would urge the public not to speculate on the circumstances, and instead allow our highly skilled officers to continue with the investigation.

“We are aware of comments circulating on social media, and I can confirm that this is not being treated as a child grooming investigation.

"THe complainants are all adults, as we have previously stated.

“We are also aware of videos circulating online, which resulted in a

small number of people gathering in Bognor High Street to air their views on Monday, December 30. No offences were committed. However, where we do identify any offences committed, we will take action.”

Officers attended the premises the same day the incident was reported and arrested two Bognor Regis men, aged 30 and 42, on suspicion of administering poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm. THey have since been released on conditional bail until January 27, while enquiries continue.

On December 30, police enforced a 48-hour closure order under Section 76 of the Anti-Social Behaviour and Crime Prevention Act 2014, on grounds that the operation of the premises has constituted a public nuisance. An application was made to magistrates to confirm the order on January 1.

Chief Inspector Carter added: “We are continuing to work with partners including the district council, and the local community, to understand what happened and the motivations of those involved.

"However, there is nothing to suggest that any other food outlets are involved, or that there is any link with any particular section of the wider community.

“Local officers remain present in the area, and anyone with any information relevant to our investigation is encouraged to come forward.”

Silver anniversary for Rose Green's beloved postmaster

A community celebration took place this week to mark the 25 years that Mac Patel has run the post office in Rose Green Road, with the help of his family and a devoted team of staff.

Lilian Richardson, chairman of Aldwick Parish Council, attended the event, along with fellow Aldwick councillor John Bass and the mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr Phil Woodall.

Cllr Richardson said: “Rose Green is the heart of Aldwick. THe post office is the heart of Rose Green.

"We thank you and all your staff for keeping that heart beating and keeping it at the heart of our parish.

“Mac is a popular, well respected and loyal postmaster, who is committed to the Rose Green community. Mac and his wife, Naina, are at the heart of this community.”

Inevitably, during Mac's 25 years at the post office, a lot has changed, including the closure of the two banks that were previously on the parade.

Despite the challenges he has faced, he says he’s not even considering retirement.

“Why would I?” he said. “I’d have no idea what to do with myself.

“You see, all the people who come in love it here. I love what we do here. We

love our customers, we love our staff. It works both ways. It’s worked out really well.

“THe banks both went and we were worried, but we’ve had people coming in who wouldn’t have before. We’ve actually seen a massive increase in customers.

“Obviously, things change over time.

We have to keep getting people to come to us, and stay with us. If they don’t come, we won’t last.

“Since I started giving out the letter, about two years ago, it’s really grown and grown.” Entitled ‘please read this’, Mac explains to his customers that due to a steady decline in post office transactions, people were using the post offices less, and obviously affects their business.

For this reason, Mac’s customers are so important - something that everyone agrees is reflected in his service.

“You can tell from the crowds that gathered at the celebration that Mac must be a very popular member of the local community here in Rose Green,” Cllr Woodall said.

“I know from reading posts on social media that people recommend coming to this post office as he offers a very friendly and efficient service.

“I personally remember meeting him when I worked in the village probably when he and his family first arrived.

"Congratulations to 25 years serving your community and hopefully you will be serving them for many more."

Council must do more to help reduce car use A BIKE shop owner has raised concerns that the council is not doing enough to reduce car use.

Adam Bell, director of Bognor Regis Bike Hub, said: “Rather than merely suggesting that West Sussex seek to reinstate the parking arrangement with Tesco, surely it would be far more effective to get the council to make significant change to try and reduce car use?”

THis came in response to an article last month regarding the number of drivers parking in Orchard Way and surrounding roads in Bersted because the Durban House car park was often full.

“Bearing in mind over 60 per cent of all car trips are five miles or less,” he said, “councils should be taking a lead in providing their staff with travel planning to try and encourage more use of walking and cycling, rather than car use.

“For example, instead of free car spaces at Durban House or expecting employees to park wherever they like, the council should be making more use of cycle to work schemes.

“Not only would people be fitter, healthier and save money, but councils would also benefit from more motivated staff who take fewer sick days.”

Residents around Durban House complained last month about the number of cars parking in Orchard Road.

A previous agreement had been made with the Tesco store in Shripney Road. However, this has now changed, meaning drivers must find alternative parking spaces.

A county council spokesman said: “We do not expect employees to park wherever they like – just like all other members of the public, Durban House staff have to abide by the rules and laws of the road, and have been reminded of the importance the council places on being a good neighbour.

“THe council has been taking a proactive role in encouraging and enabling more of its staff to

use sustainable travel options for their journeys to work since 1997. THis was when the council became one of the first UK employers to begin developing a travel plan.

“Our staff travel plan is a comprehensive package of measures that is helping to reduce car commuting and business travel. It includes incentives such as a 15 per cent discount on Southern Rail services, a car share matching service, lockers and shower facilities for cyclists, pool cars at main office hubs (meaning staff do not need to commute by car) and free use of the U7 bus service – a joint initiative with the University of Chichester.

“THe Durban House campus has two covered shelters where staff can leave their bikes when they are at the office. County council employees – including those based in schools - can also take advantage of the cycle to work salary sacrifice scheme."

` Bandstand ramp ACCESS for all will be possible at one of the most well-known structures in Bognor Regis.

Councillors have agreed to allow a ramp to be installed at the town's seafront bandstand.

THe addition on the north side of the Grade II-listed feature was approved by Arun District Council's development control committee on Wednesday. It will be among a package of works to restore the bandstand to its historic glory and promote its use.

Arun planning officer Dan Vick said the ramp could be removed in the future if it was necessary.

"THe access ramp will have contemporary-style, rather than traditional, handrails at the request of our conservation officer.

"THat will allow it to be seen as an addition rather than trying to make it look like part of the original structure," he said.

Cllr Hugh Coster (I, Aldwick E) said: "I'm not speaking against the ramp at all but I just think it's going to alter the symmetry of the original building.

It's a bit of a shame but we have got to have the ramp."

As well as the ramp, the agreed works will include Perspex sheets at the top of the bandstand to prevent water penetration, new non-slip tiles, new lighting and a horizontal ceiling.

AN initiative based in Bognor Regis is hoping to launch a community fridge, freezer and larder in the town centre.

EcoSwap Community interest company is negotiating a lease on town centre premises where it hopes to launch a community fridge, freezer and larder.

Gemma Hawkins, from EcoSwap CIC, said: “We will look to work with Deligo and other local food businesses to provide those in need with fresh food.

"Not only will this help us combat food poverty, but it will also reduce local food waste.”

EcoSwap already hosts an array of community events and gatherings to tackle food poverty and loneliness.

Last month it organised its Pay What You Can Community Cafe.

At the event, visitors were offered beef - provided by Gaterrals of Felpham - or vegetarian stew, followed by a medley of Christmas puddings, mince pies, stollen and spice biscuits, each served with ice cream, brandy sauce and custard.

Gemma said: “We had several families with younger children, a few older people and some single people.

“Once we had served everyone in the cafe, we took meals into Bognor Regis town centre, where we passed them to several homeless people.

"We delivered to a young couple sleeping rough at the Regis Centre, and a guy who has been in and out of sheltered housing for many years but struggles with substance abuse.

“We've had great feedback from both events, with people telling us what they picked up, as well as complimenting the food and company.

“We are pleased that we are able to provide somewhere that local residents can come and enjoy an evening meal without the burden of the bill.

“Everyone deserves to have a treat once in a while and the owners of Deligo, Ria and Billy Nash saw an opportunity to give back to the community by providing their time, space and equipment” EcoSwap is looking to host a community cafe event at least once a month and hopes to reach an increasing number of people as a wider group get used to them hosting the events.

Deligo also allows them to host a fortnightly knit and natter, every other Tuesday, from 2pm, which is free to attend, and a craft club every other THursday, from 6pm, with a suggested donation of £3.

Deligo has also implemented a community bookshelf where people can come and borrow or swap books and will have a community knitting and crochet basket available shortly to encourage people to go to the cafe rather than stay indoors.

Prime Minister thanks Nick Gibb for his work in schools disadvantaged pupils has actually improved since 2009.

"We need to do more, and as my honourable friend says, that is why we are investing more now — record sums — in education.”

Mr Johnson's backing for the enthusiasm shown by Mr Gibb came after Conservative MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, Michael Tomlinson, asked about ensuring there was a continued focus on the most disadvantaged, especially when it came to vital literacy and numeracy skills.

Mr Gibb became a minister in May, 2010, in the coalition government.

He has kept his role ever since apart from a two year gap.

One of Arun's first acts after last May's elections was to scrap the previous council's plans for a linear park on the Hothamton site and restrict any new proposals to improving the Sunken Garden area only.

Meanwhile, Bognor Pier Trust members are to be given the chance to tell town councillors about the historic structure.

But councillors rejected a bid by the Big Blake Project for a similar session to put it on a par with the five regeneration organisations which were given 30-minute presentations to councillors last month.

THey said the trust's invitation was justified because it was an existing building and the Big Blake Project was about a future idea. However, they expected to meet with the project as its plans were developed.

A LETTER is to be sent from Bognor Regis councillors calling for an update about regeneration ideas for the town.

THe demand was agreed at Monday's meeting of Bognor Regis Town Council after a request from its deputy town mayor, Cllr Steve Goodheart.

"THis needs to be done sooner rather than later. THis is something I am passionate about. I have been banging on about regeneration and how desperately we need it for many years," he said.

"We should write a letter to Arun District Council calling on it to bring us up to date on the current situation regarding regeneration proposals.

"It would be good to understand if Arun is working from a regeneration masterplan for all of Bognor Regis.

"If not, what documents are Arun working from and how is it, or are they, being developed?"

He said some Arun members and officials had worked on Bognor Regis regeneration

Its members have agreed to proposals from Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) to regularly investigate buying commercial properties across the town to find out about possible purchases to provide an alternative to depending on council tax paid by residents.

Another proposal by Cllr Stanley to hold a seminar by an industry expert about to explore becoming involved in the residential letting market, for the same reason, was also backed at Monday's meeting.

New line-up for fans of theatre THEATRE lovers will be able to enjoy a new array of shows, concerts and specialist talks in Bognor Regis.

THe 2 O’clock Club will take place at the Regis Centre on the first Tuesday of the month, starting on February 4, with doors opening at 1.30pm.

Many quality entertainers from many spheres will be involved, with organisers ensuring that there will be something for everyone.

Some of the entertainers taking part will be quality singers, solo duos, choruses and groups.

THe first session will be a taster afternoon, which will include an

introduction for the audience about the new concept.

AN ONGOING upsurge in trading has led to an Aldwick business expanding.

GWA Cars and Finance has added a second office to its base in Coastguard Parade to cope with the rise in demand.

Gary Watts, the company's managing director, said he could not remember a more exciting time in the 27 years since he founded the business.

Plastic, rubber and wet wipes found during clean-up of Pagham harbour

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SEVEN large bags of rubbish, fishing tackle and lobster pots were collected during a litter pick by 17 volunteers at Pagham Harbour in Sidlesham.

THe Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) run a couple of beach cleans every year covering both the Pagham Harbour and Medmerry reserves.

A beach clean held on Saturday, January 10, is one of four additional beach cleans planned this year in partnership with SC Johnson. RSPB and SC Johnson are working together to take action on the issue of marine plastics through a programme reaching over 300,000 people in 2019 and 2020.

Roy Newnham, visitor experience officer from RSPB Pagham Harbour and Medmerry in Selsey Road, said: "Plastic of all shapes, sizes and functionality dominate the rubbish collected from plastic bottles and lids to pens, bags, toys etc.

"We also found pieces of rubber, again in a variety of forms, is prevalent as is fishing line. One item that does stand out is wet wipes – there is still an awful lot of this collected. It does not break down and ends up entangled in seaweed etc.

"Unfortunately, litter is everywhere, not just on our reserves and affects flora and fauna wherever it lands. However, being a nature reserve, wildlife is drawing to the harbour to feed, shelter and breed.

"With this in mind, it is particularly important to try to keep these areas

free of litter. If it builds up it has greater effect and the longer it remains the more likelihood of tragic impacts on our wildlife "Fly-tipping also continues to be a problem on both reserves. THe removal of such waste also costs us time and money, which, being a charity and one focused on nature, is somewhat frustrating for both us as an organisation and our members and supporters."

In October, at the Pagham Harbour Local Community Forum, canoeist Sarah Logan spoke of her disgust at another finding of raw sewage in the harbour.

THere are many rifes and ditches around the peninsula outside of the reserve that feed into the harbour. THere have been suspected sewage discharges into certain rifes and ditches which have been reported to the Environment Agency.

Roy added: "THere are many ways the public can help protect Pagham harbour and Medmerry reserves. Obviously they can join us on beach cleans and/or become a volunteer, helping to manage, maintain and run the reserves.

"THe reserves are beautiful areas and two of the few unspoilt areas along our urbanised southern coastline. We want everyone to enjoy and appreciate them as well as conserving and providing a home to wildlife.

"We have many dog walkers and cyclists on the reserve, some lovely regulars and the majority are very friendly and responsible visitors keeping to designated cycle routes and pathways,

keeping their dogs under close control and cleaning up after them.

"We would ask that all visitors follow this approach. THere are areas which are closed to the public for conservation.

"Entering these areas can disturb the wildlife and trample plants and vegetation we are growing for vulnerable and threatened species.

"Similarly, dogs leaving the paths and rummaging in the undergrowth or even worse chasing wildlife, can have a big impact on wildlife at all times of the year.

In winter, birds must feed continuously to ensure they have keep up their energy levels to survive. Disturbing them not only interrupts feeding but uses up valuable reserves they have been gaining."

Roy says that while litter is obviously unsightly, it also gets picked up and even ingested by wildlife. Marine plastics breaking down into tiny ‘nodules’ has been well documented recently, getting into food chains including humans. For birds using the coast, entanglement can mean death.

` Youth celebration TIME is nearly up to nominate a deserving young person.

THe Arun Youth Community Award recognises young people aged 11-19 who deserve to be celebrated.

Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C, Middleton) said: "As much as I would like to turn this down morally, emotionally - I can't unfortunately identify any planning reasons."

THe proposals by Domusea Developments were approved by 8-6 votes

by Arun District Council's development control committee on Wednesday.

Domusea's planning agent, Paul White, said at the committee the land was last used for farming in 1978.

"If this application is refused, it will not be put to agricultural use because the equestrian use is likely to remain," he said.

He said the development would provide much-needed homes, including affordable homes, to enable the council to meet its housing target and it was surrounded by newly-agreed housing sites.

A previous scheme for 33 homes was refused by councillors last June.

A TSUNAMI of traffic is about to be unleashed on Yapton, a councillor has warned.

Cllr Hugh Coster (I, Aldwick E) said approving outline plans for 33 homes at Clays Farm in North End Road would add more vehicles to those which would be generated from housing on a series of surrounding sites.

"THere will be 160 vehicles a day on this particular site," he said.

THis would take the total number of daily vehicles travelling along North End Road from all the approved homes to 1,478.

He said: "THe other day I was sat in a long queue at the level crossing just north of there. I was there just over ten minutes.

"THose queues are going to get considerably worse. All these vehicles are going to go either east to the Oystercatcher junction, south to the Comet Corner junction, north to the level crossing or westwards to Barnham - all pinch points.

"We are looking to approve a torrent of tsunami, if you like, of extra vehicles on North End Road. I think that's an intolerable number and we are looking to add to this."

Good neighbours scheme

THERE are around 85 volunteers and 110 clients in Chichester, Arun, Adur and Worthing as part of a Good Neighbours scheme.

THe scheme that partners volunteers with older residents who want help to become more active in their local community or who need practical support is appealing for volunteers to help people avoid social isolation.

THe Good Neighbours scheme is run on the county council’s behalf by the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS). It connects people who may be feeling isolated with volunteers who offer their help during 12 arranged home visits.

Volunteers offer practical help to clients such as accompanying them to the shops, enabling people to take up a hobby and supporting them to attend local groups, clubs and activities. THis can help people to re-engage with others and improve their self-confidence.

THe RVS is appealing for new volunteers to donate their time to help clients of the Good Neighbours scheme across West Sussex.

Helen Kirkham, service manager at the RVS, said: "With the growing need for services that support people to remain independent in their later years, Royal Voluntary Service is passionate about helping people enjoy more active, healthier and happier lives.

“Our Good Neighbours service provides support to those most at risk of social isolation across West Sussex, with many of our dedicated volunteers giving an hour of their time each week to share their skills, knowledge and experience with others.

“As an organisation, the RVS wants

to inspire more people to get involved with volunteering and in turn make a real difference within their local community.”

Amanda Jupp, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for adults and health, said: “Reducing social isolation is a key priority for our Age Well campaign. Many people want to keep active and busy, but might just need a little bit of practical help or someone to boost their confidence and get them started.

“THe Good Neighbours scheme can offer them that support, but for those who volunteer, it provides a sense of satisfaction that they are giving something back to people in their local community who need their help.”

A key feature of the service is the 'safe and well' checks that volunteers carry out during all home visits, looking out for any changes in the client’s health, wellbeing or home surroundings.

It can also link you with a wide range of organisations across West Sussex that provide further advice, services and activities.

Good Neighbours West Sussex is available free of charge, but clients will need to meet any associated expenses, such as phone calls, travel and activity charges.

Iron age warrior

THE SECRETS of an Iron Age warrior, who is thought to have been a real-life Asterix resistance fighter, are to be revealed this month through a major exhibition at THe Novium Museum, Chichester.

‘Mystery Warrior: THe North Bersted Man’ will open on January 25. THis will be the first time that this extraordinary Iron Age warrior and his burial possessions will be on public display.

THanks to generous funding from THe National Lottery Heritage Fund, the exhibition will be complemented by a series of free activities and events running to the end of September.

A range of exclusive merchandise is also being developed with three local artists. Each artist is creating a range of beautifully crafted objects inspired by the mystery warrior.

THese will be on sale in THe Novium Museum gift shop throughout the run of

the exhibition.

THe mystery warrior was discovered 12 years ago in Berkeley Homes’ Bersted Park development, in the most elaborately equipped warrior grave ever found in England. It has been dated to around 50BC, in the late Iron Age. Due to its significance, a team of world-class experts has been working with the museum to analyse and interpret the finds.

THe exhibition — which has been made possible thanks to the donation of the finds by Berkeley Homes, a £50,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and signature sponsorship from Irwin Mitchell solicitors — will explore the life, health and death of this fascinating man.

It will attempt to explain some of the questions that have been raised by the circumstances of his burial.

"THe first Bognor Regis session for 2020 takes place at 10.30am on Wednesday, January 15, at the youth and community centre in Westloats Lane. THen, new for 2020, Making Your Mark expands into Selsey with the first session happening at 10.30am on Tuesday, January 21, at THe Selsey Club in Coxes Road."

One of the tutors at the Selsey sessions, Selsey Folk and Music Club member John Bradley, said: "It's really good that Making Your Mark is coming to Selsey.

"THe youngest of our four children was just six weeks old when we received my husband’s cancer diagnosis and whilst his care was extraordinary, we struggled to find ways to ease the pain of our children."

The ins and outs of total knee replacement surgery Nuffield Health 78 Broyle Road, Chichester, PO19 6WB 01243 884728 www.nuffieldhealth.com TOTAL knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure in which injured or damaged sections of the knee joint are replaced with artificial parts.

It is commonly performed for arthritis of the knee where the joint has become stiff and painful.

Initially, arthritis may be treated with painkillers, anti-inflammatories, physiotherapy and, in the earlier stages, arthroscopy (keyhole surgery).

However, as the knee progressively wears, joint replacement surgery may be required to relieve the pain and improve mobility.

THe procedure

THe surgery involves an incision over the front of the knee and through the quadriceps muscle.

THe worn surface of the joint is removed, including a small thickness of the damaged bone ends of the knee, usually about a centimetre of bone is removed during the operation. THe metal of the knee replacement fits over the cut ends of the bone, essentially resurfacing it. THe metal implants are secured to the bone with special cement. A plastic spacer then fits between the metal parts.

THe operation takes approximately an hour and a half.

THe implants

THe total knee replacement comes in three parts.

THe femoral component is made of metal alloy and is highly polished. THe tibial component is also metal, with a curved plastic insert attached to its upper surface. THis forms the new joint with the metal femoral component. THe inner surface of the patella (kneecap) is covered with a plastic button, which sits in a shallow groove on the front of the metal femoral component.

After a total knee replacement

With the aid of a physiotherapist, you will get out of bed and begin to exercise your new knee replacement. Following an enhanced recovery programme, this may be as early as the day of surgery, or the following day. With perseverance, you should be able to climb stairs by day 3 and usually go home between day 3 and 5 depending on the speed of your recovery. Post-operative physiotherapy, range of movement stretches and functional exercises are all very important to gain full function and range of movement of your knee.

Commitment to the post-operative programme will really help to get the best result from your knee replacement. You will need to continue attending physiotherapy as an outpatient. THis can be done closer to your home with one of our recommended group of physiotherapists, and at Nuffield Heath your post-operative physiotherapy is included as part of your package.

For most people it will take around six weeks to be walking reasonably with only one stick and get back to driving a manual car, but three months to

fully recover. It is important to remember that an artificial knee is not a normal knee. You should be able to carry out all normal activities of daily living.

Although it does not damage the knee replacement, kneeling can be uncomfortable post-operatively.

THe details of this will be discussed with you. You should be able to get back to golf, a gentle game of tennis, cycling, swimming or gardening.

Lifespan of the TKR

THe majority of knees last ten to 15 years, with studies suggesting that a total knee replacement in a 70-year-old has around a 94 per cent probability of lasting for 10 years after surgery. If, however, the patient is younger and more active, the replacement may not have such a high survival rate, in which case your surgeon will discuss other options with you.

THis makes them a good alternative to proteinrich animal products. Nuts and seeds are also great sources of iron, fibber, magnesium, zinc, selenium and vitamin E. THey also contain a good amount of antioxidants and other beneficial plant compounds.

Don’t forget to include some good fermented

plant foods in there, too, as they are good sources of probiotic bacteria, which may help improve immune function and digestive health.

THey also contain vitamin K2, which may promote bone and dental health as well as help decrease the risk of heart disease and cancer.

You can try sprouting or fermenting grains at home.

Some can also be bought in supermarkets such as tempeh, miso, natto, sauerkraut, pickles and kimchi.

Seaweed is also beneficial as its one of the rare plant foods to contain DHA, an essential fatty acid with many health benefits. Algae such as spirulina and chlorella are also good sources of complete protein.

Two tablespoons (30 ml) of these provide about eight grams of protein.

In addition, seaweed contains magnesium, riboflavin, manganese, potassium, iodine and good amounts of antioxidants. Chia and flaxseeds are particularly high in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid your body can partly convert into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). THese play an important role in the development and maintenance of the nervous system. THese long-chain fatty acids also can help with pain, inflammation, depression and anxiety.

Beans, lentils and peas are great additions too as they contain ten–20 grams of protein per cooked cup.

THey're also excellent sources of fibre, iron, folate, manganese, zinc, antioxidants and other healthenhancing nutrients.

Kelly's champ in the Singles

Chichester are finally up and away on their travels CHICHESTER secured their first away win of the season but only just, with a 18-15 victory at KCS Old Boys.

THere was optimism among the Chichester faithful who made the trip up the A3 to Motspur Park, for the first match of 2020 following the victory against Havant in the final game of 2019.

Blues made five changes to the side that beat Havant. Joe Knight came into the pack, Gareth THomas and Liam Rowland returned in the backs while Sam Drayson and Ryan Spriggs were on the bench.

THe pitch was in fantastic condition after the wet weather of recent weeks.

Blues came out of the traps and took the lead inside four minutes.

Gareth Davies executed a perfect chip and collect over the KCS defence, passed to Harry Seaman for the offload to Tom Blewitt. THe speedy fullback outpaced the opposition centres to dot down under the posts and then added the conversion.

As the half progressed Blues looked in total control, perhaps flattered slightly by KCS who were struggling with their ball handling and retention.

Chichester's forwards dominated the scrums and controlled the ball at the breakdown, allowing the backs to probe the opposition defence at every opportunity.

However, it was KCS who scored next with a penalty kick after a Blues’ infringement 30 metres out (3-7) and 22 minutes on the clock.

Despite containing the opposition in their own half for extended periods Chichester could not find their way through the KCS defence, for a second try, but did increase the score just before the interval with a penalty from Blewitt to lead 10-3

at half-time.

KCS came out for the second half a different team and it was immediately obvious that Chichester had a fight on their hands.

With KCS on the offensive it was Blues’ turn to put in a defensive shift, soaking up the pressure to contain the opposition’s centre partnership.

A break from Eddie Jenkinson on halfway with support from Toby Golds moved the ball to the five-metre line. From the breakdown Rhys THompson dived forward to touch down on the whitewash but the referee indicated the ball had been held up.

From the resulting scrum the Blues’ pack drove for the line and Seaman was on hand to touch down but the conversion was missed.

It left Chi 15-3 ahead with 48 minutes played but 20 minutes later KCS had run in two tries and kicked a conversion to level the score at 15-15 to set up a nailbiting final 12 minutes.

THe referee sent a player from each side to the sin bin in the closing period. Both teams dug deep and put in excellent defensive performances but a KCS infringement five minutes from time provided Blewit with a kicking opportunity in front of the posts which he nailed.

As in the Havant game, Chi retained possession to run the clock down. Chi are seventh in National One South on 40 points.

Hooker Tyrese Makasi was man-of-the-match after getting the nod ahead of Martin O’Callaghan, Joe Woods, Ben Deavall and Blewitt.

Tomorrow, Chichester host what they are dubbing Super Saturday at Oaklands Park.

THe 1st XV host London Cornish (2pm KO) while the second and third sides are also at home.

Sportinbrief  Rugby BOGNOR kicked off 2020 with a 27-21 home win over Sandown & Shanklin in Hampshire Premier.

NICK KELLY produced a superb comeback to win the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League Divisional Singles Knockouts Division THree Singles title.

THe Divisional Singles knockouts attracted 52 players at the Newtown Social Club over three divisions, it was only a few more than last year, but way off the record from a few years ago.

Sixteen players entered the Division THree competition, many more than last year’s dismal turnout, but way off the divisional record.

THe first semi-final saw Gary English (Old Barn) lose 2-1 to Kelly (Chi Snooker Club 'B'). Kelly's team-mate Dan Sapio removed Mark Wingate (Newtown Clubbers) with a 2-1 win in the second.

Leg 2 saw a close game with Sapio hitting the double again to go 2-0 up. Sapio started leg 3 with 85, followed by 120 and 100, but multiple misses at the double allowed Kelly to close the gap and hit double top for an 80 out-shot.

Leg 4 again saw Sapio hit the big scores with two tons but he missed chances at the double allowing Kelly to take out 80 on the bullseye to set up a decider.

Leg 5 saw the only ton come from Kelly, but both players were piling on the pressure. With both players on a finish, it was Kelly who hit double 18 for the greatest comeback, taking the match 3-2 and to be crowned champion.

In Leg 2 Wingate again hit two ton-plus scores and took the leg after just missing double top for a 110 out-shot. In Leg 3 Clements picked his game up to hit 83, 95, 133 and 73, and eventually took the leg, despite Wingate hitting three straight tons. Leg 4 saw a ton from Clements, and a 140 from Wingate, but he missed multiple chances to see off the leg, allowing Clements to take it to the last leg. Wingate hit three more tons in the last leg, but still allowed Clements to catch up.

Finally Wingate hit the double, taking the match 3-2, and the Division Two Singles title.

Division 1 saw 15 players step up to the oche, the worst divisional turnout in at least 16 years. THe first semi-final saw Richard Ragless (Friary 'Z') versus Karl Wingate (Lamb Nomads). Ragless hit his second 180 of the night on his way to a 2-0 win. THe second semi-final saw Rob Collins (Friary 'Z') hit two 180's on his way to taking out

his team mate Dave Owens with a 2-0 win.

A miss from Collins let Ragless have another go to take the leg in 16 darts. Collins started leg 2 with 140 and two tons, but a 180 from Ragless followed by a ton left them only four points different.

Collins missed double top for a 116 out-shot but took the leg in 17 darts. In leg 3 Collins started with a 180 but Ragless followed with 140. After 9 darts Collins had 170 left, but could only hit the 25.

He eventually took the leg. Leg 4 was a slower burner with another 180 from Collins, his sixth of the night, left him with 40 which he hit in one dart to take the leg in 13 darts, the match 3-1 and the Division One Singles champion title for the third time.

Chi secured an impressive 3-0 victory at VCD Athletic on Tuesday night as they bounced back from Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Faversham Town in BetVictor South East.

THe margin of victory on Tuesday, when Kaleem Haitham, Iordache Gicu and Josh Clack got the goals, could have been even more says Killpartrick, who felt the manner of victory was the most important factor.

He said: “We got back to our playing style which we have been trying to develop.

“We showed our identity on Tuesday and went back to our philosophy and what we have been trying to do.

“I blame myself a little bit as we have come away from it over the past weeks on the heavier pitches but the VCD surface was good and we got into the passing patterns that we have worked on, so I was delighted.”

He added: “No disrespect to them, but noone would have complained if it had been five or six goals but the most important thing was the process. THe outcome was what we wanted but the way we played pleased me the most.

“After the FA Cup that’s the first sign of us getting back on the right track.”

I STILL haven’t got over Saturday’s stoppage-time loss to Margate.

We had no match in midweek to get it out of our system but it was just one of those games.

I felt we had done enough to win it in all honesty but it is just the way it goes sometimes.

I knew after that last passage of play we were not going to win it when we hit the bar and had another effort cleared off the line.

At that point you just know you’re not going to win the game but it was cruel the way we lost it.

We did not deserve to lose it but that it is the way it goes sometimes.

THis season we have won a few like that. We have been in a few matches where the day afterwards we have wondered how we ended up winning but it probably evens out with the amount of games you end up wondering how have we lost?

It is still hard to swallow.

Even the goal was not struck that well and I don’t think Amadou Tangara probably saw it.

It was one of them where we expected him to take the defender on and out of nowhere there was no backlift and it wasn’t struck particularly well but all of a sudden the ball is in the top corner with Amadou still expecting the next stage of play.

But he has saved us enough times this season so I have no complaints.

It was great that Amadou signed a new deal this week.

You have only got to look at the start of the season to see his importance. If we had had him at the beginning and also Joe Cook we would probably be top of the league.

You need a strong spine to your team and he has signed for the next season, too, and now we probably need to add another centre-half.

I believe that’s the type of player we need, a commanding centre-half. We need a player who is a leader there.

You can’t read too much into it but he has not been with us for two games and we got beat in both of them.

THat’s not to say we are going to lose every game now, because we are not, but we would be a lot better with a person like him.

It is Leatherhead tomorrow and no game in this league is easy.

You only have to look at Margate for instance. We beat them 6-1 a few weeks ago and now we’ve been beaten 2-1 at home.

It is all about what happens on the day/night while the referee has a lot to do with how the game finishes.

THere so many factors that can change the game, especially at our level of football.

People would be surprised at the number of referees who decide games at our level. It depends on which one you get.

We just need to get another win under our belt on Saturday and then we will be back on the train as they say!

We have got players getting back to fitness like Bradley Lethbridge and Mason Walsh, while Leigh Ashton was out last Saturday as well and was a miss for us.

Jack Pearce can sort out more players maybe before the weekend but if he can’t then I feel we have more than enough quality in our squad to go and get a result at Leatherhead.
