Ship to shop vote welcomed By Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk LEADING campaigner Roger Beam has welcomed a demand for road safety facts about a proposed Aldwick store. THe Friends of the Ship Inn chairman said yesterday the decision by councillors to put the plans to turn the former pub into a convenience outlet on hold was a

sensible one. Mr Beam, who stated his objections to the scheme to councillors along with fellow Friend Terry Mullins, said after the meeting: “It is to the members' credit that they voted for the people and not for big business. "Nobody spoke in favour of the One Stop application. Members were suspicious and distrustful of the evidence put before them. "THe One Stop store would degrade life in

THeir proposed increase in deliveries and the enormous size of their vehicles would block Aldwick Street and present severe road safety dangers for local people as well as higher levels of noise and exhaust pollution." THe unanimous vote by Arun District Council’s development control committee on Wednesday calls for an independent road safety audit to be carried out around the site in Aldwick Road.

Councillors also want more detailed vehicle tracking information to be provided to enable the effects of large lorries delivering to the store on passing traffic to be assessed.
