Ban bid for beach booze-ups EXCESSIVE drinking on Bognor Regis beach is set to be banned in a crackdown on anti-social behaviour.

Councillors will be asked next month to agree to stop people on the foreshore from drinking alcohol when it is linked to nuisance activities. Ignoring a request by an authorised officer to stop drinking or to surrender alcohol will be an offence.

But it will not be illegal to drink alcohol on the beach if consuming it does not

affect others.

THe restriction is included in a new public space protection order (PSPO) which Arun District Council is proposing for the town’s foreshore.

THe area of foreshore which will be covered by the order, if it is approved by councillors, will stretch from the Bognor Regis boundary with Felpham at the eastern end of Butlin’s to opposite the southern end of THe Steyne.

THe order will also apply to the following parks and open spaces in the Bognor Regis area: Bersted Park, Hotham Park, Longbrook Park, Marine Park Gardens, Millberry Wood, Old Rectory Gardens, Steyne Gardens, THe Brooks, Waterloo Gardens and West Park.

THe proposed order will ban behaviour which causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to the public.

THis will include shouting and/or swearing.

It will also ban occupying or living in a tent, vehicle or other structure for the purposes of camping in those areas.

Failure to obey will result in a fine for the offender. THe order could last until 2023.

MORE than £17m a year is expected to be spent in a proposed Lidl store for Bognor Regis.

THe discount retailer has revealed the current figures for the likely annual turnover for its planned outlet in a detailed planning application.

Of the total, £13.8m will be spent on convenience goods such as groceries stocked by the intended store at Oldlands Farm in Shripney Road. THe rest will come from comparison goods, such as major appliances.

But most of the spending will be transferred from the existing Lidl in the Peel Centre on the opposite side of Shripney Road.

Daniel Wheelwright, the company's planning agent, says in a statement to Arun District Council: "A significant part of the trade diversion to the proposed store will come from the existing Lidl foodstore which will close when the proposed store is opened."

THe new Lidl was only likely to attract a small amount of spending from town centre shops like Morrisons and Iceland, he states.

THe intended store will have a sales area of 1,410sq m but that is only 483sq m more than the current store to limit its impact on other businesses.

THe proposals will also benefit Bognor Regis by boosting the town's economy.

He says: "THe proposal will support 40

local full-time equivalent jobs. "(It will) result in a multi-million investment which will generate £1.9m per annum in wages for local people.

"Although it is acknowledged that many of the employees at the existing Lidl store are likely to continue working for the new store, the increase in floorspace will result in the demand for an increase in employees.

"A range of jobs will be provided from management and supervisor staff level to clerical, administrative and service positions."

In accordance with national planning policy, Lidl had searched for alternative sites in the town centre but none could be found to match Oldlands Farm.

A total of 149 parking spaces will be provided at the store. THey will include two rapid electric charging spaces.

THe building will be single storey and incorporate 1,029.5sq m of photovoltaic panels on its roof to generate some 915kwh of electricity to help it to become sustainable by using renewable energy.

THe latest application by Lidl comes after Arun approved plans in March 2014 for a food retailer on the site, which has the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars logistical centre immediately to its east.

A further application to establish the retail use of the part of the land was backed by the council in February 2018.

As reported, Arun has also approved a scheme for the Saltbox location opposite in which an Aldi store will be located.

Sports club members to gain from more modern buildings IMPROVED facilities can be built at Middleton Sports Club.

THe club's committee has been given planning permission to replace its bowls pavilion and add a first floor extension to its existing gym to make the premises accessible for disabled people.

Arun District Council planning officer Richard Castro-Parker says in his report: "While the footprint of the replacement bowls pavilion would be larger than that of the existing, it would not be considerably larger than the existing.

"THe proposed pavilion would also

have a flat roof and would only be marginally higher than the existing."

THe slightly larger size of the proposed new bowls pavilion would also fail to have an impact on the sitting of the Grade II-listed building, THe Manor House, sited to the north, Mr Castro-Parker states.

He adds: "THe Manor House is screened by mature trees along its boundaries and, as such, it is considered that any views of the proposed ground floor and first floor extension to the gym would be limited and taken in context with the clubhouse as a whole."

Predators FC welcomed a team of 15 youngsters this year after moving from Felpham.

THe change of location meant the newly-named Predators FC Under-11s White were in need of new equipment.

THey asked the Co-operative Funeralcare to help.

Colleagues in the company's North Bersted and Rose Green branches donated a total of £700 to enable the new kit to arrive before the end of last year.

Lindsey Booker, a funeral co-ordinator at the Rose Green branch which is part of Southern Co-op, said: "I have a bit

of a vested interest because one of the players is my son but it also means I see first-hand how much the team means to them all.

"I think this is an amazing thing to do to help set up a new youth football team and help enable the children to take part in a sport they love."

THe team were visited by football officials late last year and presented with the Autumn Cup which they had won in the preceding weeks.

Head coach Galvin Wiggins said: "It's been fantastic to have the support of the Southern Co-op.

"THey don't just make the boys look smart in their new kits, with the equipment we have been able to buy with the extra funds, it makes us able to progress the team to a higher standard.

"We are thankful to the continued

support of the Southern Co-op."

THe Under-11s team includes players from across the area, including Bognor Regis, Aldwick, Rose Green and Felpham.

Predators FC was formed back in 1994 with the intention of giving all children the opportunity to play football.

THe first squad consisted of 13 players, but this has since grown to more than 250 players. THey include girls, boys, women and men.

Southern Co-op's community engagement programme, Love Your Neighbourhood, aims to help communities become greener, healthier, safer and more inclusive.

Applications for funding, goods donations and volunteering by all local good causes are welcomed by the organisation.

TWO Bognor Regis men have been released on bail after being arrested in connection to pills found in a takeaway kebab.

THe arrests came after three women in their 20s reported finding tablets in their food after they returned home from Istanbul Grill in High Street, around 2am on Sunday.

Officers attended the premises later the same day and arrested two men, aged 30 and 42, on suspicion of administering poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm.

THey have since been released on conditional bail until January 27 while enquiries continue.

District commander, Chief Inspector Jon Carter, said: “THis is a concerning matter, and our enquiries are ongoing to examine and identify the tablets, and determine exactly how they came to be in the food.

"In the meantime, we have taken protective measures by enforcing a closure of the takeaway.

“On Monday, December 30, a small number of people gathered in the vicinity of the premises involved to express views based on social media comment about the investigation.

“While they are entitled to their

views, we would urge the public to allow our highly skilled officers to continue with the investigation.

On Monday, police enforced a 48hour Closure Order under Section 76 of the Anti-Social Behaviour & Crime Prevention Act 2014, on grounds that the operation of the premises has constituted a public nuisance.

THis is a direct result of the incident currently being investigated by police. An application was due to be made to magistrates to confirm the order on Wednesday.

Chief inspector Carter, continued: “We are continuing to work with partners, including the district council, to understand what happened and the motivations of those involved.

"However, there is nothing to suggest that any other food outlets are involved, or that there is any link with any particular section of the wider community.

“Local officers remain present in the area, and anyone with any information relevant to our investigation is encouraged to come forward.”

` Webcasts stopped LIVE webcasting of meetings has been halted by Arun District Council.

Councillors have taken the decision to no longer show their development control committee and full council meetings as they take place.

THe first meetings this will affect are the committee meeting next Wednesday and the full council a week later.

THe meetings will be recorded live and will be available on the council's website to watch the following day. THe change has been introduced after problems with the coverage of four meetings in five months since May. Cllr Dr James Walsh, the council's leader, said: "We are aware that this is not an ideal situation and are disappointed that we have been unable to deliver a faultless live-webcasting facility, despite best efforts from officers.

"We are looking at alternative provision for the future but, for now, we thank residents for their patience and understanding."

` Petty cash theft A HAIRDRESSERS was broken into an money was stolen from the petty cash and tip jar.

THe break in took place overnight in Chichester Road, Bersted.

On the same night, the window of a vehicle was smashed in Orchard Way, and fishing equipment was stolen.

Work to start to slow drivers

RESIDENTS’ calls for cut-through traffic and vehicle speeds to be reduced have been answered.

Work on new traffic calming measures near THe Regis School is due to start on January 20.

THe community led initiative aims to slow down vehicles in Frith Road and discourage non-residential traffic from using the area.

A West Sussex Highways spokesman said: “Residents asked us to review traffic conditions in Frith Road, and Westloats Lane to Collyer Avenue, which fronts THe Regis Schools, Phoenix Youth Centre and THe Arena Sports Centre.

“THey were concerned about the speed of traffic and that it was being used as a cut-through by non-residential road users.

"THey also had safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists, given that it is a 20mph, low-speed zone.”

THe £95,000 scheme will include three pairs of speed cushions. Each will be 3m long, including ramps of 600mm and 1.7m wide.

Plans also include a raised table, which will be 65mm high, and will be installed in Frith Road between Pevensey Road and Gravits Lane. All ramps will be 1m long.

All features will be constructed from black macadam.

Frith Road will be closed to vehicular through-traffic in phases and signed

diversions will be in place.

THe spokesman added: “Work of this nature does cause disruption, for which we apologise.

"Every effort will be made to try to minimise the inconvenience. For example, being near THe Regis and Southway Primary Schools, we have chosen to schedule the work between January 20 and February 21, which includes the halfterm holiday.”

West Sussex County Council has been consulting about its plan for a series of traffic-calming features in Frith Road since late 2018.

At the time, a statement from its director of law and assurance, Tony Kershaw, said: “West Sussex County Council proposes to install a system of raised traffic calming features on Frith Road in Bognor Regis.

Frith Road is a narrow residential road and provides the main route to THe Regis School.

“THe road is subject to a 20mph speed limit. THe proposed features are intended to discourage traffic from using Frith Road as a shortcut and to encourage compliance with the 20mph speed limit.

"THe proposed features are intended to improve compliance with the 20mph speed limit and to thereby improve safety in Frith Road."

To construct the raised table, at the entrance of Gravits Lane, THe Arena and THe Regis School, the junction and car park will be closed to vehicles on February 21, between 9am - 4pm, except for emergencies.

Searching for Birdman tapes A MAN is hunting down old footage of Birdman 2004 when he leapt off the pier in his homemade glider.

Professional film maker, Greg Anthony Harris, 37, said he’s always had a passion for aviation and dreamed of building his own aircraft.

For him, the Birdman offered the perfect opportunity to ‘flex his creative muscles’ and build THe Harris Hawk.

Greg made a video of the building process, from start to finish.

“I hadn’t watched the tapes for over 10 years, so really couldn't remember what was on them,” he said.

“I got them converted, only to realise there was no shot of the actual flight!

"My mother was filming that day and was so nervous that I would be hurt, understandably, that she missed the shot!

“THis is why I’m reaching out to your readers. I feel the story is incomplete without that shot.”

Greg, who was originally from Weymouth but emigrated to Canada three years ago, has already released part one and two of the story on his YouTube channel, showing the process from start to finish.

It took Greg six weeks to make the glider, as he used his experience with building remote control planes to piece together the glider, from scratch.

“My dad, who started his career as a boat building, offered me some advice. Maybe that’s why the glider floated so well just after it hit the water.

"THere was never any real expectation that I would fly that far to be honest. I just saw the event as an opportunity to have an adventure. However, I did fly further than the team from NASA which was a thrill.

For Greg, film making is his purpose in life, particularly his roots based on his passion for aviation.

“As a filmmaker, I wondered what it would look like if I put my love for filmmaking together with my interest in flight and my YouTube channel, Greg Anthony Harris, was born.

“Sharing my passion for flight through my YouTube channel just lit me up and has given me purpose, which had been absent for so many years.

“I want to tell my Birdman story to my YouTube subscribers, but this something that at the moment I can’t fully do.”

Night in the cold to raise money for the homeless

A BOGNOR Regis man took to the streets to raise awareness for the homeless.

Joee Nash said his 24 hours on the streets was eye-opening as he raised money for his chosen charity, Stonepillow.

"I managed to get a decent spot, it got a little wet but it as the best I could find.

THe overall experience was a very lonely and emotionally draining one, but I’m glad I did it.

"I don’t regret it and I didn’t regret it for a single second while doing it.”

Joee raised £545 for Stonepillow, his target was £500. He also collected £115 during his time on the street which he donated to the Howard Ward at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

“I've learnt to appreciate what I have more, and I've learnt to be more understanding of what homeless people truly go through.

"I understand how living on the streets can change a person and it can get them doing some crazy stuff that deep down isn't them. I understand their struggle and it can destroy them in so many ways.

“I've learnt to love more and overall it's just given me more desire to help the world.

"At the moment I don't have anything in the pipeline as far as fundraisers go but I have a lot planned for 2020 in regards to mental health awareness and support! Lots to do.”

THe order is one of three which will be considered by Arun’s cabinet members in February to replace the current order which offered townwide protection against anti-social behaviour.

Another of the intended orders covers Bognor Regis town centre.

It will extend from Church Path to Hotham Way, along to London Road, around the railway station to the Longford Road crossroads and southwards along Canada Grove, Steyne Street and Waterloo Square to the seafront.

It will feature a total ban on drinking and allow authorised officers to confiscate open containers which contain, or could contain, alcohol.

A report by Arun states it will also ‘prohibit behaviour which causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm and distress to a member or members of the public, including shouting and/or swearing’.

THe third order will ban cycling in the London Road precinct.

A council spokesman said: “Arun District Council is reviewing the PSPO as the order is time restricted and has to be reviewed before it expires.

“THe current order comes to an end on March 31, 2020, and we are obliged to consult with residents, businesses and partners to review the effectiveness of the current order, which has been undertaken."

Crucial community group is preparing for its long awaited return next month A SPECIAL support group will return in February for the visually impaired.

THe Macular Society's Bognor Regis Support Group will be taking a break in January and will not hold its usual monthly meeting.

From February 12, the group will meet on the second Wednesday of each month, from 10.30am12.30pm, at 4Sight Vision Support, 36 Victoria Drive, Bognor Regis.

Stella Black, regional manager, said: “THe group is here for anybody affected by Macular disease.

We want to encourage people to come along.

Friends and family are also very welcome.

“It’s good to be able to learn from each other’s experiences and get tips. THe peer support can be so helpful. Our groups can really help people increase in confidence and become more

independent.

“THe group invites guest speakers on a variety of subjects, including macular conditions and their impact on our daily lives. THe meetings are also social occasions where we can chat over a cup of tea.”

Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, something that can have a devastating effect on people’s lives, leaving them unable to drive, read or see faces.

Many people affected describe losing their sight as being similar to bereavement. THere is still no cure and most types of the disease are not treatable.

` Man arrested POLICE have arrested a Bognor Regis man who was wanted for recall to prison.

Tristram Dean Francis, 36, was arrested on Tuesday morning in Bognor Regis, as a result of information received following a media appeal.

He had been released from prison on license in February 2019, part way through a 39-month sentence for burglary.

He was wanted on behalf of the Probation Service for breaching the conditions of his release license.

Officers issued a news and social media appeal on Monday for his whereabouts.

ORGANISERS hosted a special New Years Day brunch to bring together the community in Eastergate.

Nina-Maria McMaster organised the event to kick start another year of coffee mornings and brunches for the village.

Hosted at Eastergate Village Hall, members of the community, young and old, came together for the brunch.

Nina said: "Happy New Year to all.

What a great way to start 2020 with a packed out hall enjoying a freshly cooked brunch this morning, sponsored

by Chef's on the Move.

"It's truly so lovely to see new people to the area and how grateful they are being made so welcome - it makes us proud to be part of this community."

Just days before, the hall had been filled again with locals for the Community Christmas Day Dinner.

Nina said: “It was a wonderful and heart-warming get together for those without families, widowed, isolated, just out of hospital and generally friends that we have made through our coffee morning and many other community events.

“Christmas is a very difficult time of year for many and I know that this made it just a bit better.”

Nina’s husband, Martin, cooked a traditional Christmas dinner for the 40 guests.

THe event was made possible thanks to everyone from around the community coming together.

“We also had donations from the family of a man called Frank, who passed away earlier this year and enjoyed our coffee morning so much. His family made a very generous donation to our meal in his memory.”

A major team was involved with serving up and clearing away as well as making festive decorations.

Nina added: “A huge thank you to the local businesses who supported this event, with the donations of cash, ingredients and equipment.”

THe next event is on January 12, with Dave Harris's Crooner and Cake afternoon.

Students help the homeless

Felpham Community College (FCC) ended a busy term by hosting a nonschool uniform day.

Staff and students across the year groups were invited to wear nonuniform for a £1 minimum donation.

Proceeds from the day were split between Stonepillow and Bognor Regis Foodbank who provide support for local homeless and vulnerable people.

Mark Anstiss, headteacher at Felpham Community College, said: “We have supported Stonepillow and Bognor Regis Foodbank for a number of years.

"We see it as a chance to raise awareness of the great work the charities do, as well as raising much needed funds for them. It has been a busy term for charity at FCC. "We collected over 80 bags for the British Heart Foundation Bag-a-THon, we held a non-uniform day in October for World Mental Health Day and we have just finished a school wide food collection for UKHarvest.

"Our staff also took part in a Christmas jumper day on December 13, for Save THe Children.

"Our sixth form charity committee have done a brilliant job organising the charity events calendar so far this academic year and are already looking forward to our annual charity week in February, with planning starting asap next term for it!”

Isabella Saunders, year 13 student and assistant head student in charge of charity, said: “Raising money for Stonepillow and Bognor Regis Foodbank is important to us as it helps local people at Christmas time. We feel everyone deserves a Christmas dinner and some kindness.

"As well as promoting the day and helping collect all the money in, our sixth form charity committee also did the food / goods collection for Stonepillow. We wanted to help the charity distribute important things to local people that are needed at this time of year such as warm socks and gloves.

"Also, to promote that charity is about giving your local community your time, members of our charity committee recently visited a local care home and ran a community craft event with the residents.

"THis was great fun to organise and run and we got really positive feedback from the residents who took part, and our students really enjoyed it as well.”

Pagham man has been rewarded for contributions to sustainable farming A FARM-owner from Pagham has been made a Commander of the British Empire.

THe founder of an international farming and food business, whose headquarters is at Sefter Farm, Pagham, Peter Charles Barfoot, has been made a CBE in the New Year Honours List.

Mr Barfoot's award has been made in recognition of his contribution to sustainable farming, with its British base's operation having been powered by green energy since 2010, thanks to a range of practices by Barfoots of Botley.

An anaerobic digester at the Pagham site supplies all the energy used for production and packing of the firm's fresh products, grown in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and North America, which are sold by most

British supermarkets. Surplus energy is sold to the National Grid.

Being the fifth generation of a farming family, based in Hampshire before Sefter Farm was opened 25 years ago, Mr Barfoot said his philosophy was: "THe quality of the soil and the biodiversity balance mean everything when producing healthy crops. To farm successfully, you need to be a custodian of nature."

THe sustainability ethos includes a soil conservation system on cultivated land at Barfoots' UK farms, water is re-used and surplus vegetables are donated to charities including FareShare Sussex and UKHarvest.

Barfoots employs about 400 people with its sites including a processing plant at Leythorne Farm, Vinnetrow Road, Chichester.

THe pier has had a complex history of ownership, which became clear as Jan's talk continued. It was opened in 1865 at a cost of £5,000 - and was sold for the first time just 11 years later. Another sale took place in 1908 and its new owner completed a major refurbishment with a cinema, theatre, roof gardens, a restaurant and shops during a closure of four years.

THe pier was requisitioned for military service during both world wars before the Sixties and Seventies saw it damaged by fire and force of nature. It was closed for a time before a new owner took over and the current owner, John Ayers, bought it towards the end of the last century.

THe group's next meeting will feature Amanda Elmes giving an introduction to the area's national park. It will take place at 10.30am on January 23 in St Mary's Centre, Grassmere Close in Felpham.

Visitors are welcome for a £1 fee.

AN HISTORIC celebration is being planned for Bognor Regis Pier this year.

THe structure reaches its 155th anniversary - and the members of Bognor Regis Pier Watch are determined to ensure the occasion is marked in style.

Pier Watch founder Jan Malpas gave the initial details of the event to Bognor U3A (University of the THird Age) at its final meeting of 2019.

Publicity officer Paul Barry said: "On May 4, 2020, the pier is 155 years old and Bognor Regis Pier Watch have plans for a Victorian-style event to celebrate this achievement.

"THe objective of Bognor Regis Pier Watch is to raise the profile, while maintaining a watching brief over its status. However, while the pier remains in private ownership, this remains the extent of their activity."

Rocks' manager Jack Pearce, coach Robbie Blake and a group of first team players joined club mascot Rocky Bear to conjure up some yuletide spirit in Howard Ward at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

THe Nyewood Lane outfit teamed up with Love Your Hospital - Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust's fundraising arm for the campaign.

Former Bognor Regis Town ace John Price, the charity's corporate fundraiser, said he was delighted to welcome the squad.

He said: "We'd like to thank Jack Pearce and Robbie Blake and all of the player and visiting party for bringing an array of wonderful gifts to the children. It was a special visit."

Kerry Brunnen, the ward's play leader, said the visit brought a sense of fun to the hospital at a time when it was hard for parents and children to cope with missing Christmas.

"It was a lovely atmosphere and everyone enjoyed the visit so much.

"It cheered everyone up, the children and the parents, and we're grateful to Bognor Regis Town for coming along and handing out the gifts and bringing us some light-hearted moments," she said.

A GROUP of secondary school pupils have completed West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s FireBreak programme.

THe ten pupils demonstrated their new skills as part of their pass-out parade in front of family and friends at Bognor Regis Fire Station.

THe group was made up of pupils from Felpham Community College, THe Regis School, Littlegreen, St Philip Howard, Cornfield School, Chichester Free School, and St Philip Howard.

Chris Bowles, Station Commander at Bognor Regis, East Wittering and Selsey fire stations presented the graduates with their awards.

He said: “All of the students have done a fantastic job this week and have worked really well together as a team to learn some really valuable life skills which we hope they will take with them into their everyday lives.

“FireBreak is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn more about our fire and rescue service, while improving skills such as teamwork, discipline and

self-confidence, which are all incredibly valuable in day-to-day life.

“FireBreak is a challenging course, but these students have really worked hard together to complete it with flying colours.

"I hope they will use this course as a springboard on to bigger and better things in later life.”

THeir pass-out parade last month came following a week of intense training, which gave them an insight into life as a firefighter as well as a variety of valuable life skills.

Among some of the skills the pupils learnt were hose running, climbing the ladders and getting to grips with wearing breathing apparatus. THey also learned about fire safety, CPR and have gained a HeartStart first aid training qualification.

FireBreak is a programme run by the service's targeted education team.

It is aimed at secondary school students encouraging them to become positive role models and learn skills they can use to help towards maintaining a safe community.

Man who inspired parkrun delighted by record new year turnout in town

By Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk PARKRUN founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt praised the record turnout who began the new decade in Bognor Regis running.

Mr Sinton-Hewitt was a surprise visitor to the latest new year's day parkrun in Hotham Park.

THe event attracted 442 entrants - the biggest field since it began in May 2014and Mr Sinton-Hewitt said all those who took part should be congratulated.

"Looking around at all these people here is amazing," he said. "Most of them do not consider themselves runners.

"THey just see themselves as 'ordinary' people but they are starting the new year in the right way.

"THey are making sure they are out and about, having fun in the open air, meeting their friends and doing something healthy."

THe sizeable turnout in Bognor Regis played its part in an expected one million parkrunners around the world during the Christmas and new year period up to tomorrow's regular run.

Mr Sinton-Hewitt, on his second visit to the event, said: "THat's phenomenal. I didn't expect that when I started parkrun.

"I began parkrun in Bushy Park, Teddington, in October 2004 because I had depression and mental health issues.

I needed to see my friends and I needed to be active.

"THat is what the event is all about - being healthy and people being as active as they

want to be."

Wednesday's parkrun at 10.30am was the sixth of the free runs to be held as a new year began and the 279th in the park.

THe previous highest number of runners around the 5km course of one short and three long laps of the park was 428.

THe first parkrunners of 2020 were led home by Jack Penfold, 23, a government communication officer, of Pagham.

THe Tone Zone Runner completed the run in 18min 16sec - some 90 minutes after he achieved a personal best of 17:49 in the parkrun at Littlehampton for his initial first place of the day.

He said: "It's all about sweating out the Prosecco from last night and training for the Paris Marathon, my fourth, in April.

"I'm looking to go under three hours for the first time. So, I'm training hard for that.

"Parkrun is a good way to get out and there's always friends here who you see as well as getting some exercise."

He just beat Steve Amos, who clocked 18:29, and Christo Oosthuizen, who also ran in Littlehampton, and came third in 18:46 in Hotham Park.

THe first woman home also did the Bognor Regis-Littlehampton double. Alice Cox-Rusbridge also timed herself in 20:20 as she crossed the line for a fitting start to the new year.

THe 19-year-old paramedic student from Pagham said: "THis is my 109th parkrun. I love the community feeling. Everyone is so friendly.

"It boosts my mood in the morning and I leave here with a smile on my face. I started

doing parkruns in 2017 and I like to see my running pals."

But the run is about so much more than coming first. One of those with the biggest reason to celebrate on January 1, was Felpham resident Paula Bentley, 49, who took part in her 100th parkrun.

THe legal assistant said: "It helps me to lose weight, keep fit and keep agile. THere is also a good community here.

"Everyone is so positive. When you are flagging, there is always someone to tell you that you are doing well."

"I started parkrun four years ago. I had gone on a learn to run course by Arun Wellbeing. I didn't run at all and now I'm on my 100th parkrun. It feels fantastic."

THe run's director, Anita Watkins, said: "THis is a good start to the year. THe event is more about being social than it is about running. THere are people here today who come every week and others who are here for the first time."

THey included several dozen who had taken part in either the Littlehampton or Chichester parkruns earlier as well as visiting parkrunner from California.

But they all depended on the 23 volunteers to enable the event to take place.

Joining the helpers for the first time was barcode scanner Jane Court, 51, of Lavant.

She said: "My husband is running today. Parkrun is a good thing to do. It is social and helps you to keep fit."

Dedicated competitors don't let the rain dampen their spirits in Pagham

Kim Arlaud was first to cross the finish line on Boxing Day with her team of four competitors.

THe winning team consisted of Kim Arlaud, 27, Jamie Archer, 25, Mike McCarron, 25, and Joe Woods, 26.

THis year’s race was Kim’s first, despite her team having competed without her for several years before.

Jamie said: “We’ve done it for about seven years now, but this is Kim’s first. It’s a bit of a tradition now, loads of my family have done it, like my cousins, so it’s nice to keep it going. It’s all good fun.

"We’d definitely like to take part next year but obviously it depends on the weather.

THe rain this year definitely did mean less people turned up and probably less participants.

“THen again, that probably worked in our favour so we could win! It was Kim’s birthday on Boxing day so it was a nice way to celebrate her birthday.”

While for some the annual event is about winning, for many it is an opportunity dress-up and fun, while raising money for charity, and the categories celebrate this.

Patrick Harmsworth was awarded first place in the Fancy Dress category, with his team the Avengers End Pram.

Patrick said: “It’s 12 years that I’ve been

doing it, I started off with a friend had been doing it for years, we did it representing the St THomas a’Becket Church. THen I decided to do it separately based around movies.

“We’ve been doing it for the last five years. We’ve done the Dark Knight, Harry Potter, two lots of Star Wars, and now of course Marvel. We wanted to do a big one this year with it being such an important time for Marvel fans.”

Patrick’s team consisted of his wife Jan and daughter Jennifer, Collin Simmons, Collin Cooper, Natasha Halloway and her boyfriend Luka, and Kim Bressington.

“We started work on the pram back in September,” Patrick continued. “Luckily we already had the boat attached to the two prams so we just developed that. With the recent bad weather it’s hard at times to build it. At one point we thought we might not even finish it in time. It’s such good fun.

“When I first moved down here I didn’t even know what it was, I’ve been living in Pagham for about 25 years now. I looked at it and thought, ‘Wow it looks like great fun, we should take part.’

“It’s great to raise money for charities that are local, where we know where the money is going. It’s the crowds responses that make it so worth while, it’s amazing. I’m definitely going to do it for years to come.

THe race on Sunday was the 74th of its kind, an event that continues to draw in people from across the country since its

beginning in 1946.

A strong and dedicated team help organise it every year, ensuring that rain or shine it goes ahead.

THis year’s team was put through its paces as they braved the rain.

Tim Holland, the chairman of the Pagham Pram Race committee, said: “We were of course disappointed with the weather on the day, and as a consequence the spectators were down to about half .

“THis in turn affected the street collection on the day. However, we are very pleased with the amount donated and all of this goes directly towards our Helping Others fund and helping the local community.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Pagham for their generosity and support. In addition we wish to thank all our sponsors for their continued support. Our biggest thanks must go to all the race entrants in the race who are a hardy bunch and it will take more than rain to put them off!

“THere will be a presentation night in the next few weeks, details which will be announced via our website, paghampramrace.com, shortly.”

Despite the rain, the event raised an impressive £2,625 which consisted of the money raised through collection buckets and entry money, as well as prize money returned by winners.

City's college gets award for top services for it's students

THe college group has received a Matrix Quality Standard Award reaccreditation in recognition of the clear and impartial advice and guidance that is provided to students studying across each of its colleges across Sussex, which include Chichester College and Brinsbury College.

THe Matrix Standard is the quality framework for organisations to assess and measure their information, advice and guidance (IAG) services.

Assessors met with students and staff across the group, inspecting the delivery of IAG at every stage.

THey highlighted the introduction of new services including Progression Plus centres, which provide impartial in-depth information and guidance on a range of opportunities with a central focus on careers advice.

THe assessors also looked at the new ACES programme – a yearlong series of interactive workshops centred on personal development to ensure students gain the 'Attitude, Choice and Employability' skills needed to achieve their future aspirations.

THe report stated: ‘Chichester College Group (CCG) has ensured that its commitment to IAG being a golden thread of the learner’s experience is underpinned

with high quality resource’ and ‘service delivery approaches are implemented with energy, passion and commitment, ensuring this multi-tiered IAG provision is joined up to have maximum impact on student.’

Shelagh Legrave, the chief executive at CCG, said: “Delivering excellent services to our students at each of our colleges is at the heart of everything we do.

“For our progression teams in particular, this means ensuring all of our students can access high quality information, advice and guidance that is tailored to helping each of them – as individuals – raise their aspirations and make the right decisions for them.

“No two students are the same, and it’s important that they receive impartial advice and information that will help them find the path that will help them achieve their ambitions.

“THe feedback we have received in our Matrix accreditation demonstrates that we are doing just that, and this is a credit to the staff at all of our colleges.”

THe report concluded that ‘an outcome-based IAG experience is being deeply embedded across the whole Chichester College Group.

THe assessment confirmed a firm focus upon ensuring that every staff member understood and played their part to make a difference to the full range of students, from foundation learning to higher education graduates.

Sue is honoured for her uni work in the new year's list

Sue Samson, a former director of Academies for London and the South East for the Department for Education, has become a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Mrs Samson has overseen the significant growth of the University of Chichester Academy Trust since its inception in 2012, developing a multiacademy model of 15 schools that educate more than 5,000 children.

"I am delighted to have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list," said Mrs Samson.

"It is a validation of the commitment of so many teachers and headteachers that I have worked with and the fantastic achievements of so many children. THey are the true hero’s and I am delighted to accept the honour on their behalf."

With the backing of the University of Chichester’s 180-year heritage of training teachers, she has created a vibrant, inclusive, and aspirational family of academies, transforming life chances for pupils through excellent teaching and learning.

First ever Bognor social walk

It’s always over far too quickly for my liking…But at the same time, I am very eager to crack on with the new year! So many exciting things coming up and I feel it’s a great time to cleanse and take the opportunity to treat your body to some real goodness.

Start the new year by spring cleaning your body. One of the things I see a lot of in my clinics are people who are over medicated, or perhaps been taking medication for a long time, and either don’t need it anymore, or it’s just not been reviewed for a while.

I am not at all saying take this matter into your own hands. Of course, you should speak to your GP about it, but it might just be something to consider.

Most medication can be toxic and often comes with unwanted side effects. So, if you think you need to re-look at what you are taking then this could be your first port of call for the new year.

Very rarely these days do I see anyone with a blank canvas (meaning they take no medication at all). So, perhaps

looking into the possibility of some amazing natural remedies as alternatives could be worth your time and effort.

Medication, of course, has its place and can be lifesaving, but all I am saying is make sure you are on top of what you really need. I see people all the time that just feel tired for no apparent reason.

Sometimes this can be a side effect of a cocktail of medications.

Other times of course, there can be another undetected reason. But either way, cleaning up your diet has got to be a good thing, right? THe body is constantly trying to renew and repair each and every cell.

So, if you give it the right fuel, then it stands a better chance of rebalancing and giving you the va-va-voom that you need. For example: 1. If you have a cold or sore throat – Try echinacea tincture drops, manuka honey, chewing raw ginger, adding more garlic and chilli to your foods, and gargling with saltwater.

2. Instead of reaching for the antacids when you have heartburn and acid reflux, try baking soda, aloe vera juice, apple cider vinegar, chlorella, sauerkraut and soothing mint or camomile tea.

3. If you are suffering from anxiety look at introducing meditation into your daily regime. It really only needs to start with five minutes every morning, just to get into a routine. You will be amazed how much this simple exercise reduces feelings of anxiety.

Natural treatments that can really help are black cohosh, ginseng, lemon balm, maca root, omega 3 fatty acids, probiotics and St John wart. THese all need to be accompanied by a good whole food diet, as the minerals in plant-based food help to balance the body and restore exhaustion and fatigue.

4. If you have high cholesterol, try

changing your diet and seeing the results in just a few weeks. Drinking freshly squeezed orange juice, or coriander seed tea, increasing your omega 3 fatty acids such as flaxseeds, avocados and fish, and including oatmeal, plenty of green vegetables and beans daily can have a dramatically positive impact.

5. If you suffer from joint pain, arthritis, heart disease, skin issues such as eczema then you need to reduce your inflammation by eating more broccoli, olive oil, blueberries, fish, nuts, (free from salt or roasting) tart cherry juice, kelp, fermented foods, (known as probiotics) papaya and green tea.

Just know that you are in charge of your body. Let this be the year that you become empowered to take control of your mind, your body and your physical strength!

Sportinbrief  Rugby JESS BREACH grabbed a first-half hat-trick as Harlequins swept to a 47-26 victory over a star-studded Leinster Women at Twickenham.

Breach, from Chichester, showcased her talents as Quins’ women followed the men’s sideafter their 30-30 draw with Leicester Tigers as part of the Big Game 12 package for the first time.

THe former Chichester and Pulborough youngster got Quins off to a flying start in a dominant first-half performance.

She went over after just nine minutes and doubled her tally four minutes later when she dodged the Leinster full-back out wide.

THere were further tries from Rachael Burford and Irish international Anna Caplice before Breach completed her hattrick just before the interval to help Quins open a 33-12 lead at the turnaround.

A chance to see Wild in the Lions BOSS Kerry Hardwell is delighted to have boosted Pagham's firepower with the signing of frontman Jimmy Wild.

THe former Bognor and Worthing hitman has joined the Lions from Chichester City and will go straight into the squad for the trip to secondfrom-bottom Hassocks tomorrow (3pm KO).

Hardwell told THe Post: "He is a great signing and will no doubt give the club a massive boost.

"Jimmy's experience at playing at a higher level will be invaluable to the squad and I hope he hits the ground running with good performances and, of course, goals."

Hardwell is grateful to BetVictor South East Chichester for getting the move made.

He added: "I'd like to say a a big thank you to Andrew Bell and Graham Gee at Chichester for getting the transfer form done so quickly."

Hardwell was left frustrated as Pagham were denied a win over rivals East Preston in a game that was abandoned at half-time on Boxing Day. THe Lions led 2-1 at the break through a double from Lukas Franzen-Jones after Dan Simmonds had scored from the spot for the hosts.

But Hardwell was left to question whether the game should ever have kicked off in the SCFL Premier after the teams did not emerge for the second period as conditions became unplayable at Lashmar Road.

He said: "Boxing Day football is never ideal as it’s the most busy time of year but availability from my boys was superb.

"I thought common sense should have prevailed however.

"THe referee had asked both teams to warm up outside the ground on the local park pitch as the pitch was boggy - for the life of me I can’t understand why the game was even started if he and his officials had doubts over it and with the weather forecast.

"On a positive note, I was proud of all the boys with their attitudes and their performances in what was a good, competitive SCFL game.

"I must say a big thank you to Aaron Miller and the rest of my coaching staff for their work over the festive period too."

THe Lions were left to kick their heels last Saturday too after their game at Lingfield was also postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Barn's stormers grab hold of pairs crown in fine style FORTY-ONE teams took part, exactly the same as last year, at the Newtown Social Club in the Divisional Pairs Knockouts with Old Barn’s Andy Cooper and Gary English winning the Division THree title.

Division THree saw 14 teams involved, more than double compared to last year in the Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League knockout tournament.

THe first semi-final saw brothers Mark and Ben Todd (Railway Sleepers) take on Cooper and English (Old Barn), with the latter securing a 2-0 win for their spot in the final.

THe second semi-final saw the husband and wife team of Simon and Jill Mitchell (Newtown Clubbers) against Dan Sapio and Alex Chirat (Chi Snooker Club 'B'), with the Mitchell duo winning 2-0.

In the final, English won the bullseye but the scores on both sides kept the leg even.

A few misses on the finishes from both sides, including a bust of 60 in one dart from Jill Mitchell, eventually saw Cooper hit the double.

THe second leg 2 saw English hit a ton and 137 on the way to taking the leg, despite a scare from Jill Mitchell just missing the double 11 for a 122 out-shot.

Leg three was not as eventful, with the highest score being only 85, but it was still close until English hit double top, taking

the leg and the match 3-0 to seal himself and Cooper the Division THree Pairs champions title.

Division Two saw 11 teams take part, the second lowest turnout on record for the division.

THe first semi-final saw Nick Tabberer and Wayne Green (Pagham CC 'B') take on team-mates Louis Wladon and Max Wladon, with Tabberer and Green winning 2-0. THe second semi-final was between Rob Tite and Dean Ardener (Friary 'D') and Ian Dendy and Dave Wingate (Royal Oak). THe match went to three legs with Dendy and Wingate making the final.

THe Division Two final saw Green win the bullseye for his team and make the best start possible with a maximum 180.

Dendy and Wingate made a great start, both hitting tons with their first throws, but Green hit a ton with his second throw, keeping them in the lead. Both teams then missed a few doubles allowing Green to hit the finish for the leg.

Leg two saw another good start from Dendy with 103 and Wingate with a ton.

Dendy missed a shot at the double, but Wingate took it to make it 1-1. Leg 3 saw two tons from Dendy, but his opponents were not far behind.

Again, missed doubles from both teams gave Tabberer the darts to take the leg. Green started the fourth leg with a ton, and a 101 from Tabberer gave him a chance with his next throw which he took to clinch the leg, and the match 3-1, making himself and Green the Division Two champions.

Division One had 16 teams take part.

THe second round saw the only 180 from the division come from Conner O'Hara (Legends), but he and his father lost 2-0 to Dave Bourne and Jamie Middleton (Little Legends).

Bourne and Middleton met Dave Owens and Richard Ragless (Friary 'Z') in the first semi-final, and beat them 2-1 to make the final. THe second semi-final saw Colin Mace and Rob Collins (Friary 'Z') take on Lucann Forden and Ryan Barratt (Lamb Shankers), but it was not to be for the Lamb pair as Mace and Collins won 2-0.

Pearce had no complaints about the scoreline, admitting his side were “shocking” although they might have levelled after Parsons had been gift-wrapped the opener when he robbed the ball off the Rocks defence.

Pearce told The Post: “THe first goal they scored was a gift from us but they had created two or three chances by then through their own good play.

“THe goal we conceded was disappointing and then their keeper made a fantastic save

from a Dan Smith header, which would have been unjust for us to be 1-1 at half-time, but nevertheless was still a very good save. Had we scored that, maybe it would have given us a lift.

“But really it was down to their good play. THey were hungry, they got to the ball first, played good stuff and created chances.

“To be honest, you’d have thought I given my team talk to them and not my lot!”

He added: “We hadn’t played for 18 days, we’ve lost Joe Cook, and we have had Harvey Whyte not well but on the day I have no complaints.

“It’s disappointing but it is what we do on Saturday now that becomes paramount because if we are going to get in the playoffs this year, we can’t afford to have performances like that.

“We were shocking in my opinion. On Saturday, we shall see if we have learned anything or we haven’t.”

Influential on-loan defender Cook has been recalled by Havant and Waterlooville.

Some good news for Rocks were attacking threats Brad Lethbridge and Mason Walsh were on the bench and came on while Portsmouth academy defender Harry Kavanagh made a solid debut to pick up home man-ofthe-match honours.

Chi primed for tough road trip COACH Darin Killpartrick says Chichester City cannot afford to take anyone lightly in BetVictor South East as they head to Faversham Town tomorrow (3pm KO).

Chi are 14th in the table while the Kent side are two points behind in 17th having played four more games.

Faversham have only lost twice at home so will prove a stern test but Killpartrick believes that is par for the course in Isthmian football.

He told The Post: "We have done our due dilligence on them and watched videos but there is not a bad team in the league.

"THere is probably a top four in this league and apart from that I think anyone is capable of beating anyone else.

"I found that at Bognor in the Isthmian Premier but not so much when you go into the Conference South.

"In the Isthmian League it is about what your players turn up with on the day.

"You can technically and tactically be ready but if your players haven't got that hunger and desire to want to win the game, then whoever has is capable of taking it."

Chi had to settle for a draw last Saturday when Burgess Hill scored in added time for a 2-2 draw at Oaklands Park.

Jamie Horncastle had given Chi a third-minute lead but O'Shaye GiraudHutchinson struck on 68 minutes to level.

A Scott Jones header from a Gicu Iordache cross in the 74th minute looked to have won

the game but Max Miller levelled deep in stoppage time.

Killpartrick admitted: "I think we're still just coming back from the hangover of the FA Cup run.

"It will be interesting what the next three months bring.

"It was an incredible journey which has

financially stabilised the club for a couple of years, which is a good thing.

"THe squad is looking strong now and it is nice that we are getting competition for places back now, which is exactly what we want."

WELL, that wasn't the start to 2020 we were hoping for.

A 3-0 home defeat to our biggest rivals Worthing was not how we wanted to begin this new decade.

Hats off to Worthing, though, they played very well. THey have a young, fit and strong team right across the pitch and, particularly in attack, they are very good.

I am not looking for excuses but with the last three games being called off before this one, particularly the Lewes game which was postponed so late, that did not help our build up to such a big match.

THe annoying thing is we had been in such good form until those postponements.

A lot of people were saying we were due a poor game as we had had such a good run leading up to this game.

Despite everything, there was a good atmosphere at the game. It was a big crowd, so from that side of things it was good apart from the result.

You never want to lose at home but we are back at Nyewood Lane tomorrow against Margate.

We beat them 6-1 away earlier in the season so I see no reason why we cannot get a result against them again.

Worthing, I believe, will be battling with Folkestone Invicta at the top of the league for promotion on the evidence of what I witnessed on new year's day.

THey have the likes of exRocks Ollie Pearce, Alex Parsons and Darren Budd, while even Reece Meekums had a spell with us last season.

So they have a good young squad and a decent manager in Adam Hinshelwood, too.

I think it is the first time since 1999 that they have beaten us at Nyewood Lane. THat tells you how long it is since they have got such a result, although they drew with us last

season at our place. It was the result they have been after for many years.

Worthing came in to the game off the back of their Boxing Day win over Horsham and you could see from the first whistle they were really up for it.

It's a disappointment to lose to our main rivals but they look like a team that should firmly be in the play-offs, maybe even automatic promotion if they can get past Folkestone.

As for Bognor, I still believe we can get into the play-offs and so do a lot of other people.

We've got a good strong squad and, although there are certain areas we could improve, I think they are just getting back into the swing of football after so many games called off. I think we can get fifth or sixth and in the mix.

We are still in the Sussex Senior Cup, where we shall play Brighton if they get past Burgess Hill. THat will be at home.

We are also in the Velocity Trophy and I'm not sure how important that is to us. We have Folkestone away. THere's no money in that competition and it is a long midweek trip.

Defender Joe Cook is a big loss. He is back at Havant and I think his presence would have made us more assured at the back against Worthing.

THe first goal was a mistake but the second was a header at the back post from a corner. We knew it was over at 2-0 down.

A positive was the return of Brad Lethbridge and Mason Walsh from injuries. I do rate both Mason and Bradley and when they are fully fit they will help us.

Hopefully they can help Dan Smith get more ball up front.

THe downside was Ashton Leigh going off injured. It seems we get one back and lose another. It is frustrating.
