THe popular two-hour stays in three of the town's car parks have been extended to last throughout 2020, 2021 and 2022.

guaranteed for more than a year since it began in 2012.

THe extension was agreed by Arun District Council's technical services boss, Cllr Matt Stanley, after a request for more certainty by the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District's (BID) directors.

Cllr Stanley said: "Extending the disc parking scheme until 2022 is really important because it demonstrates Arun District Council's commitment to the

ongoing improvement of Bognor Regis town centre.

"It also recognises Bognor Regis BID's need for consistency as well as the valuable role they play in helping our town centre evolve."

THe 2020 green discs officially went on sale on Monday and have been snapped up by drivers eager to carry on benefiting from the good deal they offer.

THe scheme covers the Lyon Street car

park, with 66 spaces, Hothamton (215 spaces) and the Fitzleet multi-storey car park (367 spaces).

For a cost of £2, it entitles the motorist to stay in those sites for up to two hours as many times as they like that year.

It was originally run by the Bognor Regis Traders' Association, with Arun and Bognor Regis Town Council, and was taken over by the BID when it came into being last year.

HG WELLS, Jane Austen and Philippa Gregory shared the spotlight at a unique exhibition about the literary past of Bognor Regis.

THe famous authors have all included the town and its surroundings in their popular stories.

And the story of their best-selling endeavours was told at the biggest exhibition held by the Bognor Regis Heritage Partnership Board.

Supporter Irene Campbell compiled the 16 examples of Bognor Regis in print for last week’s event.

THey included THe Wheels of Chance (set in 1895) by HG Wells, Jane Austen’s Sanditon (1790s) and Tidelands by Philippa Gregory (1648).

Also featured were two books by Aldwick author Beryl Kingston. One of them was Gates of Paradise (1800-03) about William’s Blake’s trial for sedition while he lived at Felpham.

Ken Blamires, the board’s chairman, said: “THis is the first exhibition we have held with the local history society and the Friends of Hotham Park.

“It’s good to have different groups coming together and we have had a good number of people coming to see us.

“Everybody who has come in has spent 20-30 minutes looked around and talking about the historic postcards we have on display or when they remember certain buildings or sites as they have wandered round,” THe exhibition was staged in York Road from last Monday to THursday.

Hundreds of photographs were on show.

THey included examples of the work of early Bognor Regis photographers and postcard publishers.

Also on view were details of the town’s conservation areas created by Arun District Council which heritage partnership board members are working to update.

“We are updating the information for the council. THey have not been updated since 2005,” said Mr Blamires.

A further display portrayed information about the founder of modern Bognor Regis, Sir Richard Hotham, and the work of the Friends of Hotham Park and Bognor Regis Local History Society.

THe exhibition also included a talk by local historian Sylvia Endacott, who had compiled the display about the postcards and photographers.

THe event took place as one of the preChristmas activities at the Community Forest in a former charity shop in York Road.

Some 75 people had gone along by the middle of its third day. Mr Blamires said: “It’s been worthwhile holding the exhibition. I think we will be looking to stage it again next summer.

“It would be good to get this building permanently, both as a tourist information centre and an exhibition space. It’s ideal.”

THe premises are owned by Arun District Council and the Community Forest is a joint initiative with Bognor Regis Business Improvement District.

Cash prizes on offer to boost good cause in Bognor Regis A LOTTERY is being launched next month to support a Bognor Regis community cause.

Town resident Heather Robbins decided to set up the potential moneyspinner to help Grandad's Front Room in High Street.

She hopes it will raise at least £1,775 a year to help the community interest company's work with people in need.

She said: "THe lottery will launch at the start of 2020.

"I decided to set it up for Grandad's Front Room after they encountered some financial problems and had to ask the community for help.

"Of course, the whole town pulled together and helped but I thought maybe we could all try to ensure they didn't have to ask again.

"THe shop tries to be a 'satnav for the community', where community groups can collaborate with each other, and where people can come and ask for help with any problems they are facing."

THe lottery will cost £2 a month. Its minimum prize will be £25, plus a £125 prize in July and £250 at Christmas.

Vision boards help group prepare for the new year

Julie Budge, founder and chief executive of My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre, in London Road, led two groups of mums and daughters at the session in York Road on Saturday.

THe groups of around eight people joined together in crafting and creating vision boards for their 2020 plans.

Julie said: “It’s been lovely. We were sent the information from the Bognor Regis Improvement District and their Community Forest initiative and we wanted to take part in the events.

“We decided the best way was to do something that we do already. THe idea of vision boards is to set goals for the year to keep us motivated for the rest of the year.

“Last year, my board was to open the My

Sisters’ House building, secure funding and improve services. It’s amazing that I have done those things. I had no idea that I’d do it but I have done it and that’s amazing.

“My goal for this year is to write a book about the story of My Sisters’ House and the women who have come through out doors.

“THe most important thing is people understanding that we’re out in the community and hope to take part in community events. It’s all about helping more women.”

THe sessions took place over two hours, with each participant using the donated craft equipment to each make their own individual creations.

Among the crafters was 10-year-old Amelie Gasstonn-Rendall, who attended the event with her mum, Chloe Gasston, as well as her cousin and aunty.

Amelie said: “We have been here two hours. I made my board, it was very fun.

"I’ve made it with lots of colour it and had lots of fun. I’ve got pictures of me on it, and pictures of me and my mummy. My mum is amazing.

I’ve got words saying ‘I’m not weird it’s just me’ because I act like myself and some people might find that different but I just act like myself.

"I feel like if I was lots of different bits of card and photos and glitter, this would be me.”

Mum, Chloe, said: “My mum sent us the information about this and so I booked us in for a session. I thought it would be a really great way to spend time together, just us.

“THe idea behind it is to think about the year ahead and our goals for next year.”

Accompanying Amelie was her cousin, and fellow 10-year-old, Ava. She said: “I have loved it, it’s been so great and been nice hanging out with my family.

I have really enjoyed it. I would definitely like to come back again next year too.”

From page 1 Jason Passingham, Bognor Regis Business Improvement District's (BID) chairman, welcomed the decision to extend the parking agreement until the end of 2022.

"We are thrilled that Arun has done that for us. It means we can start planning next year's disc launch.

"We can be more prepared in general and look to the future," he said.

"We are very grateful that Arun and Bognor Regis Town Council support the discs to help the town. THe two-hour free parking is very well supported by the people of Bognor Regis."

THe ambitions of the BID, now the scheme has been put on a longer-term basis, is to spend money on promoting it more.

A start has been made at the rear window of Stock Blinds in Bedford Street. Its previous blank covering has been replaced by a colourful advertisement for this year's discs and a list of stockists.

"Everyone who walks along that path will see that advert," said Mr Passingham. "We want to improve the advertising of the scheme on Queensway as well.

"THe more people who buy the discs and use them to park in the town the

better it will be for the town centre and the businesses in it."

One of the stockists of the discs, jewellery shop owner Jonathan Wadlow, said he had sold ten discs on Monday morning alone.

"It's a really good scheme. People have only got to use their disc twice and they have made their money back on it," he said. "It's also easy to use. Having a disc saves motorists having to go to a parking machine and buy a ticket for short stays."

Next year's green disc will be the eighth version of the parking scheme.

THe popularity of the discs is shown by the fact some 27,000 were sold for this year. Profits from their sale are reinvested back into the scheme.

Cllr Stanley said he hoped the greater certainly around the disc scheme would boost the BID's efforts in Bognor Regis town centre.

"Since its formation, the Bognor Regis BID have been doing some extremely valuable work to support Bognor Regis town centre.

"A perfect example is the current Christmas activities programme. THis has been growing year on year and, working in partnership with Arun and Bognor councils, is providing our town with a really unique offering," he added.

` Railway works RAIL improvements between Havant and Barnham have been completed.

THe six-week long programme of new track and station refurbishment was completed successfully on December 1.

Several kilometres of track have been replaced, some level crossings improved, stations painted, toilets refurbished and seating replaced.

A spokesman for the West Sussex Rail Users Association said: "THis was a huge job, competently tackled

by Network Rail’s Orange Army and their contractors."

THe incident took place overnight and into the early hours of November 30, in Binsted Avenue, Felpham. At around the same time, a wing mirror was smashed on a vehicle in Leopold Close, Felpham.

Extra staff to help homeless

THe extra members of Arun District Council housing services team are needed to cope with the rising number of those without a home of their own.

Councillors are in the middle of approving a shake-up of their residential service team.

If approved at the full council meeting next month, it will mean the number of full-time equivalent staff will go up from 17.4 to 20.9. But six of the current posts are short-term contracts.

THe future structure will see 18.9 of the jobs filled by permanent employees.

THe increase in numbers will cost the council £260,000 extra a year. But Philippa Dart, the council's director of services, told councillors this week the additional cash was an investment to tackle the escalating cost of housing residents in B&Bs. She said: "It will allow for a more manageable case-load for officers and create more time to focus on preventative work. By shifting the focus to prevention and relief work, it is likely that less placements into emergency accommodation will be required and there will be shorter lengths of stay."

It was expected the full benefits of the changes would be seen from 2021/22 onwards, she said at the council's cabinet meeting on Monday.

THe additional staff would also allow the council to focus more on building up a stock of housing to further reduce the need to use rooms on a nightly paid basis.

Councillors also backed spending a further £500,000 to meet the B&B bill to give families and individuals a roof over their heads.

THis will take the current year's net spending on the service to £1.14million halfway through the council's financial year. Almost £2million was spent last year but only £430,000 four years ago.

THis is partly caused by a new law which imposes a greater duty on councils to look after homeless people.

Latest figures from Arun show 86 homeless households were in rooms paid for by the night. THey consisted of 62 families and 24 single people.

Mrs Dart called the situation "an unprecedented level of demand".

"THe situation is not unique in Arun. It is reflected in the national picture," she said. But she said funding cutbacks by West Sussex County Council to homeless charities like Stonepillow were worsening the situation.

Cllr Martin Lury (LD, Bersted) said: "One chilling aspect of this report is the proportion of families - 75 per cent - of people in this accommodation. THat should not be the case in this day and age."

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said: "I do support that prevention is what we need to focus as much of our efforts as we possibly can on to mitigate the situation people unfortunately find themselves in."

Policy sets out jobs plan

A new economic development strategy for Arun District Council identifies the important subject as one way the town's economic prospects can be boosted.

THe University of Chichester's digital technology park in the town, with its unrivalled facilities in the region, and the creative hub being created in the town's railway station will boost the profile of STEAM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects in the area in the next few years.

THe 25-page strategy was backed by the council's cabinet members on Monday after a presentation by its author, group head of economy Denise Vine.

She said: "THe students who will be emerging from the university as time goes on, if they set up on their own, the creative and digital hub at the station will be the next step for them to enable them to work as a collective in one place.

"THe next step will be providing accommodation for them as their businesses grow.

"We can create conditions to make it easier for them. Bognor Regis, in particular, has a few really good opportunities there."

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said: "THere is definitely a clear direction we are set on around the economy and the

need to embed digital technology within that. We do have a lot of opportunities with STEM, especially in Bognor Regis, and I do think there are a lot of good opportunities in there which, hopefully, will create jobs."

Cllr Martin Lury (LD, Bersted) said: "One of the key challenges for this authority is those little pockets of deprivation we have around the county.

"It's extraordinary that you can walk a mile between Aldwick and Bognor Regis and that difference means people live 10 years longer.

"We have a low wage economy. THere is a lot of seasonal work. We have been talking about this since the nineties and we don't seem to have made a lot of progress."

Cllr Hugh Coster (I, Middleton) said: "THis is a very thought-provoking report.

THere is a lot in here for us to think about as councillors."

THe strategy's policy of seeking to close the skills gap and overcoming the barriers to work to boost wage rates was very important, he said.

THe strategy is based around three key themes - future places, a business success story and prosperous and happy communities. Work on an action plan to progress the delivery of policies to help to achieve them was also backed by cabinet members.

THe council's most recent economic development strategy was compiled in 2009 and the latest document also features an updated economic profile.

Miss England hopes A BOGNOR REGIS woman is competing against 14 others for the title of Miss England.

Tayla Barker is competing in photo heat three for Miss England 2020.

THe public vote has now started and acts as one judge on the panel, along with a professional photographer and a former Miss England winner.

“If I am successful,” Tayla said, “I go on to the semi-finals for Miss England, which would be something such as Miss Sussex.”

Voting finishes on January 3 at 12pm and the public vote will help select the shortlist of contestants for the semi- final.

Debbie's challenge A WOMAN from Yapton cycled across India to help raise money for a cause close to her heart.

Debbie Robinson raised an impressive £2735.47 for Breast Cancer Care.

She said: “I have survived and returned! THe challenge was amazing, but the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.

“I cycled 420km in 34 degrees, we climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest in over five days.

“We had to have buckets of water poured over us to keep out temperatures down, but I’m so glad I did it. It’s the best experience of my life so far.

“I’m so grateful to everyone who helped and supported me to help to raise so much money for Breast Cancer Care.

“My favourite part of the experience was probably just getting to see India and meeting my

fellow riders! Everyone was really lovely, really encouraging and supporting of one another.

THe journey involved cycling the 420km from Mumbai to Goa as part of a scheme by Dream Challenge, which organises similar events all over the world.

Due to her family history, Debbie is at a higher risk of breast cancer. She is on an early monitoring programme.

She said: “I chose the charity for the vital support they give to sufferers and their families. I have obviously had numerous family members and friends who have been affected by this and just want to do my bit and say thank you.”

Debbie is preparing for the Chichester inflatable 5k run in May and is keeping an eye out for her next challenge.

Beasley said: “THe competition is so much more than a physical beauty contest.

"THe girls are encouraged to be charitable, sporty and an all-round good role model and are encouraged to recycle their outfits.”

All contestants who reach the semifinal will be invited to participate in an Eco fashion round, where contestants are invited to create an outfit made from recycled materials.

THey will also be invited to raise funds for the Miss World charity, Beauty with a Purpose, as part of the competition.

Likely ash loss prompts alarm A PROTECTED tree will be among 17 to be felled if a planned Middleton care home goes ahead.

THe ash, which is covered by a tree preservation order, is set to be axed after Arun District Council's tree officer said it could go.

Mark Warwick's recommendation to councillors has alarmed residents who are fighting the scheme for the 66-bed home on a former poultry farm on land west of Yapton Road.

He states in his report about the proposals by Frontier Estates: "Notwithstanding T04 ash is the subject of a tree preservation order, its condition and long-term prospects are such that it ought not to be a complicating factor in the consideration of a quality development which adequately compensates for tree removal within a detailed landscape plan for the site."

But Silver Birch Drive resident Tim Kerss said: "Put simply, this is an utterly crass recommendation as it will mean the destruction of a healthy ash tree that is nearly 100 years old.

"Predictions state that the current epidemic of ash-dieback disease that is sweeping the UK will result in the loss of 95 per cent of the UK's ash trees and a monetary cost of £15 billion. How then can we afford to kill off a healthy specimen?

"One has to wonder how an individual charged with the protection of our trees can make a decision such as this, reversing a tree protection order that has been in place for years. It is simply a crime against nature."

Mr Warwick recommends changes to arboricultural plan put forward by Frontier Estates. He wants to see more ambitious tree planting along the site's northern boundary and the replacement of the ash, number TO4, with a semimature oak immediately to the north and covered by a new preservation order.

A total of 152 letters about the scheme have been submitted to Arun. Of those, 138 oppose the plans and 14 one-line comments back them.

Another of the opponents, Patricia Halson, of Ilex Way, is a former nursing home administrator.

She tells the council: "THis site is most unsuitable for the proposed 66-bedroom dementia care home. It is totally out of keeping with this, my local area.

"We have enough problems as it is with access to the A259 via Comet Corner. With the increased volume of traffic, there is the potential of increased fatalities.

"THe number of vehicles constantly coming and going to service all areas of such a home will be impossible."

Meanwhile, one of Middleton's district councillors has insisted the plans must be debated by council members because of its importance to the area.

THis was because of the size and density of the development, the number of allocated parking spaces and the access route along unlit Yapton Road, which also lacks a continuous footpath.

Cllr Shirley Haywood said: "To summarise, my view is that a care home of this size will overwhelm the area and will be detrimental to the lives of residents in north Middleton."

Broadband deal opens way to widespread wi-fi area for town PUBLIC wi-fi coverage for Bognor Regis seafront and town centre has moved closer.

THe comprehensive network to enable seamless use of mobile devices will be created as a result of Arun District Council's decision to back an extension of ultrafast broadband capacity in the town. THey approved the addition of 100 public sector facilities to a county-wide gigabit full fibre broadband project.

Arun digital manager Nigel Quinlan said the initial network - 25 times faster than the existing coverage - was due to be in operation early next year. THe extension was set to be finished by

December, 2022.

"THis project will definitely move us forward," he said. It will enable wi-fi to be available across the main public areas of the town and digital signs to be installed as well as smart bins.

Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said: "THis is a really exciting project. THere are a lot of economic and social benefits to them."

Cllr Dr James Walsh (LD, Beach), the council's leader, said: "THis can be opened up to the commercial sector and provide a spur to businesses and other people across the district who are pressing for this as soon as possible."

Brian Bailey, who has attended many concerts, said: “Southdowns is a fantastic ensemble, very musical indeed. THey perform such a wide variety of music, from classical to big band music.

"On this occasion, the primary school choir singing at the Christmas concert will simply be just magical.”

A PRIMARY school from Bognor Regis is partnering up with a concert band in aid of creating a new library.

THe Southdowns Concert Band has announced a joint Christmas concert with Bartons Primary School choir.

It will take place at Bersted Park Community Centre, from 3pm, on December 15.

Some of the money raised at the event will go towards redesigning an innovative library for the children to enjoy.

A representative from the school said: “At Bartons Primary School, we recognise that a good school library has a positive impact on all areas of our children’s learning.

"THis includes the development of reading and writing skills, their well-being and overall academic attainment.

` Rail services DISRUPTION to rail services is expected over the Christmas period.

On December 21 and 22, buses will replace trains between Horsham and Barnham/ Littlehampton due to Arun Valley line closures between Horsham and Arundel.

From approximately 7pm, a reduced service will start to operate with no trains running after 11pm on December 24.

THere will be no service on Christmas Day. THe only services in our area will be a special Boxing Day service between London Victoria and Brighton, and Victoria and THree Bridges.

On December 27 an amended Saturday service will operate.

Normal service will resume on December 28 and 29, with an amended weekday service in force on December 30 and January 1. From January 2, services will return to normal.

` Driver charged A BOGNOR REGIS man has been charged with three drivingrelated offences.

During the early hours of Sunday morning, officers stopped a motor vehicle in Longford Road, Bognor Regis. Valyo Puhov, 30, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and driving with no insurance or MOT. He has been charged with all three offences and will be appearing at Worthing Magistrates Court on January 14, 2020.

Christmas show at centre is a big hit with its audience

GREAT fun was had by all at a Bognor Regis centre's Christmas show.

THe Laburnum Centre's choir and soloists helped to entertain the audience, with some duets as well, for further musical entertainment.

THe singers were organised by Carole Rogers and Margaret Knipe Holland.

Poetry and elegant ballerinas also performed in the show at the centre in Lyon Street earlier this month.

THere were also two performances from the centre's THe Golden Girls troupe.

THe first showed their routine of pole fitness to the song, Black Velvet, and the second routine was their burlesque performance to Santa Baby. Both were choreographed by the dancers' talented instructor, Sue THompson.

One of the Golden Girls, Kathryn Napier Bax, said: "Everyone who took part in the whole show brought the Christmas spirit to the Laburnum Centre and, of course, there was the wonderful audience without whom the show wouldn't go on."

School rewarded for its sporting success STUDENTS and teachers from a Bognor Regis school are celebrating a platinum award.

THe Regis School, in Westloats Lane, has announced it has achieved the school games platinum mark award for the 2018/2019 academic year, the highest available award.

Such an award can only be accessed by schools that have maintained gold for a consecutive five years, THe Regis School being the only secondary school in West Sussex to achieve this.

A spokesman from the school said: “We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible, benefiting not just our school

but all primary schools across the area.

“As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.”

THe School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

THe award reviews the whole PE and school sport provision from student leadership to competitions attended. We are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Christmas light switch-on draws in yet another huge crowd for Felpham Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk FELPHAM residents crowded together in true community spirit to celebrate at their annual Christmas event.

Organised by the Felpham Village Conservation Society, the onlookers were provided with mince pies and mulled wine as they enjoyed the carols and lights.

As usual, all eyes were on the pupils from surrounding schools, who were singing classic - and not so classic Christmas carols.

Joyce Pritchard, chairman of the Felpham Village Conservation Society, said: “Felpham was all lit up on Friday when the Christmas tree lights were switched on.

“True to the tradition of 15 years, the Christmas carols were sung by pupils from local schools. THis year, the choirs from Felpham Community College, Bishop Tufnell and Downview schools sang their individuals carols for the large number of visitors.

“Mince pies and mulled wine were served to the local community, which included teachers and parents of the pupils. THe Vicar of St Mary's, Felpham, the Rev John Challis, blessed the tree and after a traditional countdown, the lights were lit by two of the pupils, Paige Burton and Sophie Jakeman.

“Huge thanks go to Butlins, who once again supplied the Christmas tree, the society's committee members and all

the volunteers who helped to make the event such a success.

“THanks also to the school teachers who gave their time to encourage their pupils to be part of this Felpham tradition.”

THe event on Saturday kicked off at 3.30pm, with the choirs each performing to the crowd.

Jessica Deal, curriculum leader for music at Felpham Community College, said: “THe event had a great festive community feel and Felpham Community College were really pleased to take part in it.

“It made everyone feel very Chirstmasy and was great to show off some of the amazing talent we have at Felpham Community College.”

At 4.30pm the lights were switched on and the tree blessing took place, thanks to Mr Challis.

“I’ve been involved since 2016,” he said. “THis is the fourth year. It’s very busy by the time 4.30pm comes around.

People fill up the street, it’s always packed.

“It’s a great community event and it’s nice to hear the bells and singing. It’s great having so many parents bring their children down, that’s really nice to see.”

Kate Gapper was the lead of the choir from Downview Primary School who was there on Friday.

She said: “We have taken part in this event for the last few years - although last year we were unable to attend as it was my wedding the following day!

“It is a great community event to be part of and represent our school. It really gets you in the Christmas spirit and the children love it!”

For Harriet Winter, from the school, it was the first time singing at the Felpham tree event. She said: “I had a feeling of it actually being Christmas.”

Fellow year 6 student, Hannah Clarke, said: “Most of my family were there watching, which made me feel proud.”

THe Felpham Village Conservation Society has been running since 1980, having 600 members by 1985.

Continuing to be popular today, the group works with local groups and hosts events for the community, among many other things.

Glenn Powell, an advisor within the group, and an organiser of the Christmas tree lights switch-on, said: “We organise all sorts of different events but always focus on activities and progressions within the community.

“We have lots of really popular events, including this one. At the moment, we’re working on improving our square. THis could be a wonderful hub for the village.

“All the funds raised at this event go straight back into the community. Community events and support are important, Christmas is important, so we want to get everyone involved. We try to get everyone to come together.”

` Bike theft warning A RESIDENT of Bognor Regis has warned cyclists to lock up their bikes.

Having already had his bike stolen from right in front of him once, Frank Jones was disappointed to see that yet again an attempt had been made to take his bike from outside his house in Linden Road, Bognor Regis.

He said: “It’s not good for people to suddenly find that things are getting stolen. Everything is at risk if it’s not completely chained down.

“We don’t have a car so we rely on our bikes to get around. We have a little trailer that we have with us to carry stuff. I chained both to the fence outside our house, with a cover.

“Someone had tried to take the bike and trailer, but must have discovered that thankfully it was chained up.

“Everyone finds our trailer amusing, they know it’s ours.

Someone had tried to pull it straight through the bushes but luckily that was chained up too.

“I hope that everyone is careful and aware of what’s going on.”

Town's links with Bulgaria

INTERESTING presentations about Bognor Regis have been enjoyed by audiences of Bulgarians.

Author and Bognor Regis Local History Society member Hasan Hasan staged the events to launch his latest books.

He held his launches in his hometown of Omurtag and in his country's capital city of Sofia.

Hasan's book is an academic study called Anthroponyms in genealogical structures from the village of Konop featuring the area in which he was born.

His book is intended to be of interest to specialists in the field of onomastics - or the study of the origin of names geographers and historians.

He said: "THe presentations were warmly welcomed by the Bulgarian audiences. THe aim of the presentations was to pay tribute to the warm welcome to the book in Bognor Regis as well as to tell people about the town and the cultural life in it.

"THe members of the local history society, friends and some citizens of the town supported me during the process of preparing and launching the book.

"THe Bognor Regis Post, the library and one of the biggest bookshops in the town also backed me.

"I did not expect support and interest in the book which has just a summary and presentation of the author in English.

"In Bognor Regis, the audience has been interested in the book and its author in a country where its subject matter is not so familiar and the author not at all.

THey really impressed me with that."

Konop for 25 years after he was born in Omurtag, in north east Bulgaria. He holds masters degrees in geography and public administration.

He originally launched his book last April at an event attended by his fellow members of the local history society.

"At the beginning of the first launching in the town of Omurtag, I organised a mini-exhibition which presented books, publications, souvenirs, a newspaper and a magazine and others from Bognor Regis and West Sussex.

"THe attendants watched a slide show presentation about the town of Bognor Regis, Bognor Regis Local History Society and its museum, with more information about (adult education provider) Aspire Sussex, the Bognor Regis Post, and the cultural life in the town. At the end, came lots of questions to me."

THe occasion was covered in the regional newspaper, Targovishki novini. in which it was emphasised the first launch had taken place in Bognor Regis.

Before the event in Sofia, Hasan presented a more descriptive and explanatory version of the Bognor Regis slideshow with details of its events.

"THe presentation was attended by specialists from different Bulgarian universities and other cultural institutions," he said.

"It provoked interest and questions from the audience," he added.

THe book was also presented at an international conference held at the University of Veliko Tarnovo soon after.

Dear Editor, ARUN District Council member Martin Lury's call to 'dualise' the A259 beggars belief as does Tory MP Nick Gibb's pledge to spend millions on the A27.

THey serve a council and a parliament that have recognised the present climate emergency.

So, such talk completely ignores the dire state of our planet.

Only this month, the scientific journal Nature states that one climate tipping point (the West Antartic ice-sheet) has almost certainly been triggered and others are close behind.

Anything and everything needs to be done now to reduce carbon dioxide emissions - not encourage them.

Investment in free, comprehensive bus services and subsidised rail fares are needed, not new or bigger roads squandering swathes of countryside.

Even a simple step like a 50mph speed limit on any road would help and also reduce noise, pollution, accidents and driver stress.

Why isn't there a 40mph limit between roundabouts on town bypasses where houses are now being built on both sides of the road?

So much time has been wasted. How many warnings do we need to take action in any and every sphere?

Ms J Shippam, Canal Road, Yapton Dear Editor, LET’S get this straight. An un-named spokeswoman for a body called Project Coastal England (which Google does not recognise) is saying that building some more wind turbines way out to sea near the horizon will stop people booking holidays at the Bognor Regis Butlin’s resort and stop businesses starting up in the Chichester Tech Park.

As a regular visitor to the area, I know from looking that the existing turbines, pictured above, are barely visible to the naked eye, and totally invisible when

there is any mist. No-one can hear any noise from them.

THrough binoculars, when the light is right, and the air is clear, their blades glint in the sun and make a nice reminder that they are working 24/7 to cut carbon emissions from fossil fuels and so helping to curb climate change.

As a bonus, they provide a seabed sanctuary for breeding fish, because trawlers cannot factory farm and dredge there.

YOUNG runners have been donating food for those in need in the local community in the lead up to Christmas.

Members of Junior Parkrun have been donating tins, packets and boxes of food as part of their reverse calendar scheme, which saw participants bring a small food donation every time they ran the 2km course.

Dan Hughes, the Junior Parkrun’s event director, said: “It’s a great cause and our youngsters, and their families, have been so generous in donating to our collection.

“We try to support our local community where we can, and it’s nice to give something back at this time of year.”

Earlier this week, the team took their full hamper to the foodbank in time for it to be distributed to families across Bognor Regis during the Christmas period.

Manager of Bognor Regis Foodbank, Sue White, said: “We rely on donations from our community to make sure that families in need have food to survive. THis is particularly important over the festive period.

“THis year we’re in urgent need of breakfast

cereal, tinned fish, vegetables and fruit and spreads, as well as long life milk and fruit juice.

“We welcome donations into the foodbank directly, as well as at our donation points in all the major supermarkets as well as Co-ops around town.”

THe Bognor Regis food bank, supported by THe Trussell Trust, was set up in 2012 and aims to help families in crisis by providing three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food.

Bognor Regis’ Junior Parkrun is a weekly timed 2km run, for children aged between four and 14. It takes place at 9am every Sunday at the Arena Sports Centre in Bognor Regis.

` William Blake A NEW exhibition in Bognor Regis this weekend is being held by the team behind THe Big Blake Project and Blakefest.

THe Spirit of the South will be staged in the town from 10am4pm on both days. THe event, at the Community Forest venue at 7-11 York Road, will feature various art projects.

Rachel Searle, Blakefest organiser, said: “We will be showcasing cutting edge art, including a professional body art installation. It’s like four exhibitions in one.

"We will have Outside In Artists from Pallant House, curated by Julia Oak, Studio Artists Elissa Barrett (LIL Concepts) and Marie Paul (Waltham House Studio).

"Sarah Gillings and SprayPainted Vinyls (You Can spray) will also be attending.”

Visitors will also be able to find out about the work of sculptor Vincent Grey and the launch of a three-year project in the town.

Elissa Barrett Body Art will be there from 10am-4pm both days.

Town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, will also talk about the importance of art and culture in the regeneration of Bognor Regis.

Free face painting will be available, thanks to the Bognor Regis Improvement District.

Pram race prepares for return Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk PREPARATIONS are well underway for the much loved annual Pagham Pram Race.

But an event of its size requires a huge team behind it, and this year the organisers are asking for volunteers, race marshals, collectors and stewards.

THe pram race, which takes place on Boxing Day every year, started in 1946 and has continued to grow in popularity ever since, now attracting people from across the world to visit.

Tim Holland, chairman of the team, said: “From its humble beginnings, the race has grown and grown.

“We try to raise more and more every year if we can. When I first started we were lucky to give away £500. Over the years it’s progressed and got bigger and bigger.

“THe village comes together, we have the church involved and the pubs, and people from local clubs - they all get involved.

“Some participants make political statements, some just take part to make a joke and have fun, while raising money for the cause.

“We now look after more than 30 teams every year. Last year, we were just shy of £17,000. It’s a great format that seems to work well.

THe most important people are the volunteers who take part, they determine the character depending on what is topical when they turn up.

“Next year will be our 75th and we’re already planning for that.

We’re always interested in people who have ideas and want to come onto the committee.

"I think it’s the significance of it all coming together, coming from such small beginnings, that’s what is so nice.

“I first joined the committee in 1977, doing some photography for the committee. Now I’m chairman.”

THe pram race began when demobbed service men raced around the village to compete for a fruit cake.

Today, the three-mile course encourages creativity from participants.

Kicking off at 11am, each participant drinks a pint of beer at every juncture, including THe Mill, THe Bear, THe Lamb Inn and Pagham Beach Cafe.

THe fun is all in aid of local charities which have been the recipients of spectators' generosity for many years.

County gritting gets reinstated

Animal magic ANIMALS on an Aldingbourne farm can bank on benefiting from a donation.

THe guinea pigs and goats, among others, will gain from the £1,000 given to the Aldingbourne Country Centre by one of its volunteers.

HSBC worker Melissa Wilcock chose her annual volunteer day to help out on the centre's farm.

She enjoyed her time so much at the base of the Aldingbourne Trust that her entry into the bank's employee volunteering competition was picked as the winner of the first prize.

She has requested the money should go towards helping to continue to improve facilities at its farm.

"I spent the whole day outside on the farm with the animals and the wonderful

people who work there," said Melissa.

"THe highlight for me was meeting the lovely people. Some of them were really shy when I first met them.

"But I've made new friends and got to spend an enjoyable day in the fresh air.

I'll definitely return."

Vicky Mearns, one of the people supported by the trust to live independent lives, said: "Melissa was really friendly. I really enjoyed working with her."

Farm manager Jon Corke praised Melissa's efforts.

He said: "Melissa was an amazing help and really got stuck in with all the daily tasks. She had a really positive attitude and interacted brilliantly with the people we support at the country centre."

THE county council has done a U-turn and reversed its decision to cut the number of roads being gritted this winter.

A few dozen roads were dropped from the gritting timetable in a move that is said to have saved around £150,000 – but councillors said they had received plenty of complaints and concerns.

Cllr Michael Jones said that when he did finally see the maps he was ‘horrified’.

Some West Sussex councillors called on the authority to do a U-turn and reverse its decision to cut the number of roads being gritted this winter.

With the county in the middle of a cold snap, members of the performance and finance select committee shared their own worries, particularly about the number of bus routes which would not be gritted.

THe issue of gritting had been raised in an earlier scrutiny meeting, though details of exactly which roads would be dropped had not been made available to members.

Cllr Jones added: “All the urban areas in particular appear to have been very badly hit and I think that has got to be a concern for us.”

Cllr Andrew Barrett-Miles, who chaired that meeting, disagreed with Cllr Jones’s claim the scrutiny process had not ‘covered itself in glory’ over the issue.

He told members his committee had looked at information about A and B roads being gritted, along with other essential routes, such as those leading to schools.

Cllr Barrett-Miles said: “We agreed with those principles but we also wanted to have each local area review what was happening.

“We’ve only just got the information.

I’m horrified as well.

“THere are roads which are bus routes and safer routes to school and that’s gone against their principles, so I’ve expressed my displeasure.

“I don’t think it was a failure of scrutiny.

It was the timing and then the fact that none of us had access to the details until now. We’ve rightly disagreed with it.”

Cllr Dr James Walsh was another who complained about the lack of consultation with local councillors, who knew their patches well.

A council spokesperson said: "THe cabinet member for highways and infrastructure has asked officers to ensure that sufficient gritting equipment is available to reinstate the former gritting routes during this winter.

"THat has been confirmed. We are now looking to restore the gritting programme to previous levels. It will happen as soon as practicable."

` New flu vaccine PUBLIC health experts want at least one in two schoolchildren in the Post Newspapers area protected against flu.

THe West Sussex County Council team hope see an increase in the number of children aged two to three who receive the nasal spray vaccination as well as those from reception year to year six.

THe uptake last year among youngest children was 48.9 per cent and the target for this year is 50 per cent. THe vaccine is available from GP surgeries for children who were aged two and three on August 31.

Anna Raleigh, West Sussex director of public health, said: "People often associate flu vaccinations with older people, but young children are also particularly susceptible to the bug.

"I urge everyone entitled to a free flu jab to take advantage of it.

"Flu is highly contagious and spreads rapidly. Vaccination is the most effective way of protecting yourself and others from catching what can be a very serious and unpredictable virus."

Record numbers of schoolchildren are also expected to be seen by NHS immunisation teams to exceed the 67.8 per cent of the West Sussex school population who were vaccinated last year.

THis year is the first time that all primary schoolchildren from reception class to year 6 are eligible for a free nasal spray vaccine.

New emergency call centre opens A JOINT emergency 999 control room has opened for residents who live around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

THe nerve centre is being run jointly between West Sussex and Surrey fire and rescue services.

THe merger between the operations of the two services started last week.

It will see emergency calls from the areas dealt with at the Surrey centre in Reigate in a move from Haywards Heath.

THe services have reassured residents only the location for the calls will change. THe level of service provided to anyone who calls 999 will remain the same.

West Sussex chief fire officer Sabrina Cohen-Hatton said: "THe new 999 combined control room provides an efficient and effective emergency call handing service for West Sussex and this was at the forefront of our decision-making.

"Bringing the two control rooms together will not affect the way 999 calls are handled or the level of service people will receive when needing West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service in an emergency."

THe new system is said to bring many benefits for the West Sussex service. THese include better value for money.

West Sussex is the first fire service to fully migrate over to a computer cloud-based resource management system, helping to mobilise crews and benefit control room staff.

Steve Owen-Hughes, Surrey's chief fire officer, said: "We are delighted to be taking 999 calls for West Sussex as well as Surrey.

"Our mobilising control system is state of the art, tried and tested and has the capacity to take a high volume of emergency calls.

"We welcome new opportunities to put the Policing and Crime Act 2017 into practice by collaborating with others with others for the benefit of all our residents.

"THis arrangement will increase our resilience, staffing numbers and is also likely to result in efficiency savings for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

"Other successful collaborations include a joint occupational health service and joint training courses."

THe merger of the 999 control room was agreed by West Sussex county councillors.

It was said at the time the move had the potential to save £1.7million between 2020 and 2022.

Councillors were told the improved equipment included more up-todate data accessible in fire engine cabs and access to CCTV data and highways cameras.

THe Surrey service was one of 20 options initially considered.

Previously, West Sussex Fire and Rescue service had joined forces with its counterpart in East Sussex .

THis arrangement which was due to remain in place until early 2021 but West Sussex decided to end it early.

Lifesaving equipment is goal for Friends' efforts

HOSPITAL fundraisers are seeking to make Christmas a time for ill children in Chichester.

THe Friends of Chichester Hospitals are raising funds to help to buy a Resuscitaire - a vital piece of lifesaving equipment to stabilise extremely sick babies who are taken into the paediatric A&E department at St Richard's Hospital.

THe special cot can warm the infants, stabilise their temperature and deliver fluid and oxygen.

It can also be used to stabilise newborns who have taken everyone by

surprise with their arrival in the world at St Richard's A&E department and have to be treated before they can be taken to its special care unit.

Friends' chairman Jane Ramage said: "THis equipment for children's A&E will make a real difference for the smallest patients, their parents, and staff who are so dedicated to caring for sick babies at such a vulnerable stage in their lives.

"All our funds are raised through the efforts of our wonderful volunteers, and they are very keen to support the Resuscitaire.

"Our Christmas raffle is already underway and it's hoped the proceeds will go some way to raising the £9,400

needed.

"Ticket sales and donations from customers of Manor Nursery, Runcton, and at Hilliers, Bosham, have raised just over £1,000 already."

With a first prize of £150 cash, and three super Christmas hampers to be won, tickets for the raffle are on sale at the Friends' shop in the outpatients entrance at St Richard's and in venues around the Chichester area. THe draw will take place at 3pm next THursday.

Other activities are helping to fundraise for the Resuscitaire. THey include tombolas. Friends' volunteers also ran a stall at the United Reformed Church for the Petworth lights event last Saturday.

` Goodwood award STAFF at Goodwood are celebrating after scooping two gold awards for the best business venue and hotel at the annual Tourism South East awards.

THe first win at THe Beautiful South Awards for Excellence 2019 – 2020, was ‘business events venue of the year’ for the Goodwood Estate, which was followed up by a second win for ‘large hotel of the year’.

Entertaining and hospitality managing director Andrew Coggings said: "We are incredibly proud to have collected these two prestigious awards.

"THis is a tremendous achievement for our dedicated teams on the estate and at THe Goodwood Hotel, who have contributed to us gaining recognition as the best in our class."

THe awards were celebrated with a dinner and ceremony at the Grand Hotel in Brighton – hosted by travel journalist and broadcaster Simon Calder.

Library cuts across county WEST Sussex County Council has no plans to close any of its libraries but it will reduce opening hours at some and cut its mobile service completely.

Following a public consultation, members of the cabinet approved the plans, which will save the county council £175,000 and come into effect in April.

THe loss of the mobile service did not go down well with everyone but Cllr Duncan Crow, cabinet member for fire and rescue and communities, said some of the alternatives – hinting at the risk of closure for some of the smaller branches – were ‘quite unpalatable’.

He added: “All things considered, the fact we do need to make savings and we’re not closing any front-line services, I think this is the best way to go.”

THe council has two mobile services, covering Bognor and Horsham,

though both of its vehicles have been decommissioned after failing their MOTs. Of the 36 library buildings in the county, four libraries, including Chichester, will close at 6pm, rather than 7pm, from April.

THis would account for £55,000 of the savings.

THere were concerns about the more vulnerable and isolated members of society not being able to access library services.

Cllr Crow said they would be offered alternative options such as the home library direct service and even the use of tablets.

Looking at the impact on library staff, the report said one of the mobile drivers had already left the council but the other would be made redundant.

Nurses have thanked West Sussex business for helping to spread some Christmas cheer -- and paid tribute to kind-hearted customers at the pie shops who have donated the toys.

Joe Turner, senior manager at Turner's Pies, was on hand to make the delivery of the gifts given at collection points at the pie-makers' four stores including Chichester and Bognor Regis.

Gabrielle can skate to success with her Post competition win

A SCHOOLGIRL has won the Post's Christmas competition with her dream Christmas present of a bike.

Eight-year-old Gabrielle Walsh from Felpham entered the Post's competition and has won ice skating tickets.

running for the past few weeks asked readers for Christmas inspiration by creatively showing Santa what their dream present would be.

THe prizes included first prize of five tickets, second prize of three tickets and third prize of two tickets for the Bognor Regis Ice Rink.

Gabrielle's entry impressed the judges with her use of different mediums including colouring pencils, stickers and even beads.

Nelly Walsh, Gabrielle's mum said: "We are very proud of Gabrielle who always displays such imagination in arts and crafts and loves taking part in competitions."

In second place was six-year-old Tommy Morgan with his poem about Christmas cleverly presented on a Christmas present made of tissue paper.

Tommy had stated within the poem that "Where some children have nothing, I have love, warmth and desire to build a log fire."

place was Emelia Guppy, aged seven.

Emelia drew a picture of a unicorn which was annotated great detail to show the unicorn shoots glitter from it's horn, ears play music and the mane is a piano which can be played. Each leg on the unicorn was filled with different items including chocolate, sweets, paper and pens.

Concert. Cavatina. A concert of seasonal music given by the a cappella choir Cavatina, at St Mary's Church, Barnham, follows their successful concert there in the summer.

Event. THe Edes House Christmas Tour. THe Grade 1 listed building in West Street, Chichester, is a fine example of a 17th century merchant's home and was built by maltster John Edes and his wife, Hannah. It has been restored by current owners West Sussex County Council and is used for special council occasions as well as being available for hire. Concert. Christmas by Candlelight. Professional singer Rachael Hawnt, a finalist in the BBC1 TV show All Together Now, accompanied by Ashley Cutler on piano, will be at a Slindon College festive fundraising event on December 19. Event. Boxgrove Priory. A busy seasonal worship programme in a historic setting offers a warm, seasonal welcome to all. Festive events at the priory preserve an element of reflection and preparation for Christmas itself and the celebratory mood is never far from the surface. THose wishing to immerse themselves in the true spirit of Christmas in the glorious setting of one of Sussex’s most notable church buildings are invited to attend the traditional carol service, followed by mince pies and mulled wine at 5.30pm on December 22. Christmas Eve has the ever-popular children’s crib service at 4pm with Midnight Mass, in which the priory glows with both candle light and human warmth, starting at 11.30pm. Admittance to all events is free and everyone is welcome.

Event. Santa's Grotto. Santa and his elves will be waiting to greet children in a specially decorated grotto at Arundel Museum in Mill Road, by the river (BN18 5PA). Art. Artel 100. Works by artists who usually exhibit in the Oxmarket Centre of Arts in Chichester will be displayed in the New Park Centre's bar in the city until January 10, from noon to 10pm daily. Fizzing end to year of tribute acts in historic setting

There's more to festive theatre than pantomime A SERIES of popular tribute acts, brought to Chichester by promoter Martin Lury this year, have been given a larger platform than the usual pubs and halls by being put on in the historic Assembly Room in North Street.

THe first of the final trio of Martin's shows for 2019 is an innovation, being a jazz and champagne evening on Monday, December 16.

A free bottle of champagne will be on every table as Chi Jazz entertain with their musical prowess producing that special evocative vibe. Doors open at 7pm, with tickets at just £15 Abba’s Angels return to the venue on Wednesday, December 18, offering a great party night out.

Textile Donations - Checkers & Sorters – Stonepillow

Stonepillow offers shelter, information and support to empower homeless and vulnerable individuals to make positive changes in their lives. They are a homeless charity for the Chichester and Arun Districts providing a recovery journey for clients which focuses on the key areas of health, housing and work. The purpose of this role is to sort through and check the numerous donations they receive at their site in Terminus Road (Chichester), separating them into the relevant categories. Stonepillow receive donations of clothing & home furnishings every day.

Classroom Support for a drama class for people with a learning disability – Workers Educational Association (WEA)

Founded in 1903, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) is a charity dedicated to bringing high-quality, professional education into the heart of communities.

They are looking for a volunteer to support the tutor in a drama class for people with a learning disability that meet once a week in term time. Some students need encouragement to join in, and so extra support is needed to maximise the student’s potential. There will be between 10 – 13 students in the class. You will need empathy with vulnerable adults, a willingness to learn to communicate with people who may have little speech, and an interest in drama, although no specific skills in that area are required.

Night Shelter Volunteer - Cooking – Turning Tides

Turning Tides is a local charity providing help and support to the local homeless community. They are extending the service they offer at the Littlehampton Hub and it will become a Night Shelter from Monday 2nd December to Monday 2nd March.

The night shelter will accommodate up to 15 people both male and female. Those staying at the night shelter will have access to the hub between 7.30pm – 7am the following day. A hot meal will be served every night. The night shelter will run 7 days a week. They are looking for volunteers to prepare, cook and serve an evening meal.

A GENEROUS Bognor Regis man has left a help centre in the town thousands of pounds in his will.

THe benefactor decided to help the work of the Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice service after he passed away.

THe cheque for £6,011 was hand delivered to the chief executive of the charity, which has a Bognor Regis base at the town hall, by his daughter, a former employee.

She said: "My father was always interested and impressed by the work and great service that Citizens Advice provides."

She often talked to her parents about the variety of issues covered by those who sought the organisation's help, its campaigns against inequality and the number of people in the community who benefit from it.

THis prompted her father to want to make a difference to the lives of his fellow Bognor Regis residents at the times when they most need independent, impartial and free advice because of his understanding of the value of volunteering and the impact it has on people in the area.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice - which also helps in Chichester and Littlehampton - helped 8,307 people last year to deal with 22,707 issues.

Luca Badioli, its chief executive, pictured above, said: "We live in an environment of continuous threats of funding cuts and difficulties in gaining capital funds to cover essential costs, such as updating IT systems, and the generous act by this single individual is so refreshing and welcomed.

"THe generous act by this single individual is so refreshing and welcomed and will be go towards the cost of updating our systems to unable us to deal with clients in a more effective way”.

Most of the service's work is delivered by volunteers. THey come from all sorts of backgrounds and help with roles such as fundraising, IT, administration, campaigning and serving as trustees as well as giving advice.

"We are not one of the charities that usually benefits from gifts from wills and people often mistakenly think that we are wholly funded by government.

"We continue to help more and more people every year and we need everyone's support to continue to do so," added Mr Badioli.

A gift of £350 in a person's will would enable Citizens Advice to buy equipment that would enable its advisers to provide a more interactive service at one of its outreach sessions.

A BOGNOR REGIS business owner has gone bananas to help homeless people around the town.

Daren Terry wants the fruits of his labour to boost those who are hungry and without a roof this Christmas.

THe hair stylist, who has hit the headlines for his imaginative haircuts, has replicated an installation by Italian artist Maurizio Catelan that has been recently sold for £100,000 in America.

THe piece, hailed as 'a symbol of global trade, a double entendre, as well as a classic device for humour', is a banana stuck with duct tape to a wall - and which was eaten by another artist, David Datuna.

Daren is auctioning his version, pictured below, to help the Stonepillow charity with homeless people and the town's foodbank. It has already attracted some generous bids.

Lotus Hair Styling owner Daren, whose business is in Aldwick Road, said: "We're making it a silent auction so we can raise as much as we possibly can and, already, some people have been bidding.

"As a salon, we are very aware that we are part of a community and that we must do all that we can to help those who perhaps are less fortunate than others.

"Stonepillow and Bognor Regis foodbank are very worthy causes and what they do for needy people resonates even more at this time of year."

SANTA is getting ready for another week of visits to roads around Bognor Regis.

THe festive visitor will be joined by his elves to continue on his latest tour of the town thanks to his friends at Bognor Hotham Rotary Club.

Tonight will see him at Blakes Mead in Felpham with an earlier start time than usual of 5.30pm until 8pm.

Club press officer Brian Clarke said: "THis street tour will start 15 minutes earlier at allow extra time for the crowds of children at this very popular location."

THe destination for Father Christmas tomorrow will be the North Bersted area from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

Sunday will see him in the London Road precinct in Bognor Regis from 9am-6pm.

He will be with his decorated float, pictured below, at the Tesco store in Shripney Road from 10am-4pm on Monday.

THis will be followed by a visit to Bersted Park in North Bersted from 5.45pm-8pm on Wednesday and a return to Tesco from 10am-4pm next THursday.

THe Rotarians hope to beat £10,000 in donations again after the success of the float in recent years.

Past newspapers show the way we used to live Articles and advertisements provide a glimpse into the past AS WE come towards the end of the year, I thought I would take a look back 70 years, to see what was occurring then.

In May, 1951, one of the main headlines in the Bognor Regis Post was, 'Should Bognor go Continental?' THis looks interesting I thought!

Perhaps it was to be a special market, new housing, and special holidays. But no, it was a "revolutionary move by the local traders".

THe new move was that during the summer season, traders would stop closing early on Wednesdays and bank holidays to offer more services to holidaymakers!

THere were, of course, some dissenters who felt that they had fought a long time for shorter hours, and were now upset that there was a move to extend their hours – no Sunday opening, though.

Some felt that this radical move would make them more like the continentals with their opening hours, hence the headline. We should, of course, remember this was only six years after the end of the Second World War. THere was still rationing and much rebuilding work was being carried out to bring the country back to normality Also in May, there was news of a new savings bank opening at No 2 Central Buildings, London Road, namely the Bognor Regis Trustee Savings Bank. THe report continued with information on the first person who registered as a depositor

who was, in fact, only six months old, with a £10 deposit, followed by the chairman of the urban district council with only £5.

All children born in the district in the opening week were also to receive a passbook and a five-shilling deposit. THis was at a time when banking was being encouraged nationally. Can you imagine the banks today with this type of promotion? THe rate of interest at that time was 2.5 per cent.

Elsewhere, in the paper I found the headline 'Joy ride for the Old folks' and, of course, wondered who had taken them! It appeared, however, that the local fire station had arranged entertainment for the day for a group of 400 elderly people on holiday in the town and this included a ride on the town’s fire engine.

I was interested to read in another article that there was a serious meat shortage at this time, and the British Rabbit Council – I didn’t realise there had been such a council – was making every effort to encourage the ‘production of domestic rabbits for food'.

It’s interesting to see how the wording of articles has changed over the years. THe complete article was a revelation in that it explained how to make a hutch, how many does were an ideal number to keep in a small space and finally it advised that the pelts could be turned into "very hard wearing garments, gloves etc". THis paper also contained advertisements

for local shops which were selling tropical birds and tortoises!

THe next article was about plans for a Pets Corner in Hotham Park and included details of the cost of animals that were to be purchased, such as £1.50 for a pair of fox cubs and a pair of penguins for £140. THe size of paper and the public’s need for information is so different from today, that even these trivial – by today's standard – reports were seen to be newsworthy in the 1950s.

During 1951 much excitement was generated by the major exhibition in the country - that of the much proclaimed Festival of Britain.

Transport to London varied and one could travel by train for 68p, with a third class return ticket. Alternatively, one could travel with the Southdown Motor company for 62p, which also included the entrance fee – different to the Millennium Dome costs!

Another paper from March, 1953, had a number of quite interesting advertisements, such as the one from Eroica in the High Street, which was encouraging readers to have a television so they could see Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation. Interestingly, they were prepared to give a generous allowance on ‘unused pianos’ towards the costs of these televisions.

Another advertisement provided a further insight into the 1950s. THis time it was Saits and Moneys Dairies who, in a joint advertisement, advised that cream would again be available from April 1 to July 31 and because of this ice cream would be available for the same period.

THey also announced that as eggs had come off ration one could depend on them for a supply of fresh eggs.

THere was also a major problem reported in that the residents of Felpham were annoyed with the GPO. It appears the Post Office had decided the main postal address for Felpham, Middleton and Elmer was, in fact, now to be

Bognor Regis, thus "sinking the identity of these areas". Not only had their addresses changed, but when the telephone directory was issued many addresses had been "reduced to numbers".

One such was the Manor House which had been given a number in Limmer Lane. Residents reminded the postal services that Felpham was mentioned in the Domesday Book, long before Bognor Regis existed.

By October, 1954, according to the press, not much seemed to have changed in the town.

THere were more advertisements but one headline caught my eye: 'Hospital Sunday at Bognor Regis – Shortage of Nurses reflects on Nation'. It was a report on a sermon preached by the Vicar of Bognor Regis in St John’s Church. He remarked : "It is due to the decline in the sense of vocation which is a secondary depression following in the wake of a nationwide decline in Christian faith and standards."

THere continued a long report on this sermon, which also included the following: "THe community in general and young people in particular are suffering from an unhealthy fixation over pleasure and money." Remember, this is 1954.

In this particular issue of the paper there is a two-page spread on 'Autumn in the garden'.

THis article leads you to understand how important gardening was at this time. I suppose after the war years when gardening was for food production, the use of this same area for pleasure must have been a pleasant change.

Bygone newspapers and books are fascinating in describing our life. As we move to 2020, think of how we lived then as we look forward to the future. Chichester given rest to regroup CHICHESTER CITY players have had a week off to regroup ahead of tomorrow's visit of Guernsey.

Miles Rutherford's FA Cup heroes suffered their biggest Isthmian League South East defeat of the season last Saturday when they went down 5-1 at leaders Hastings United.

It was a reality check for Chi's players less than a week after losing 5-1 to League One Tranmere Rovers - from five divisions above - in the FA Cup second round.

THe loss at Prenton Park had been followed by an agonising last-gasp 3-2 Senior Cup exit to Lewes in midweek and Saturday felt like a game too far against a side ready to exploit any tired minds and bodies.

With boss Rutherford away due to a family commitment, assistant Graeme Gee was left to stress Chi must now get their minds back on the bread and butter of a demanding league, starting tomorrow.

He told THe Post: "We have a week off and we had some choice words in the dressing room (at Hastings).

"THere was a little bit of honesty because as much as we took all the plaudits over the past six, seven weeks with all the media, whatever, that's now gone.

"THey can look back on that in 20 or 30 years time but now we

have got to get back to what we're normally good at.

"We are going to give them a week off so they can, hopefully, rest and recuperate so that they can start again.

"We have a big game on Saturday."

Hastings know better than anyone the pitfalls of an FA Cup run. THey went all the way to the third round and lost to Middlesbrough in the 2012-13 season - then got relegated.

Nobody is suggesting Chi are likely to follow suit but Gee stressed the players are still learning at this level.

He added: "We have some disappointed chaps in the dressing room but I am not going to hammer any of them.

"THey have been an absolute credit to our football club.

"We have to put it in perspective that we were County League champions last year in a very different league and we are still adjusting to life.

"But today was not acceptable from Chichester City Football Club and it's a dark weekend for us.

"Last week was the other side of the coin but we got our just desserts today.

"All credit to Hastings, though, as they have a wonderful side, wonderful squad, great management team, great crowd

and it is all set for promotion here.

"If we can't get anywhere near it, then I do hope Hastings get promotion.

"THey are all set to go."

Play-off chasers Guernsey visit tomorrow. THey are seventh and six points ahead of Chi, who have played five games less.

Gee expects another test from the Channel Islanders.

He said: "THey are all tough for us.

"We don't look at anyone in the league and think there are three points which are going to come cheaply.

"We have to work hard in every game - week in and week out - and the bulk of this side were playing in the County League last year.

"We are adjusting to this level and we are finding out whether we are good enough and, unfortunately, at Hastings we weren't good enough."

Video nasty as Pagham draw PAGHAM have appeared on THe Sun Football's twitter account after they were undone by a 'fluke' goal in an incidentpacked 1-1 draw at Saltdean last Saturday.

THe Tigers' James Waters scored in the final moments with a free-kick from just inside the Pagham half which sailed over keeper Jordan Matthews' head.

THe moment was captured by Your Instant Replay, who film non-league games and retweeted by the national newspaper with the caption 'Shot or cross, you decide...'

Saltdean's own Waters replied on Twitter, claiming it was a shot but Pagham certainly felt the goal was lucky .

THe Lions had looked on course for a third successive victory under Kerry Hardwell's reign until late on.

Playing their best football on the road for almost a year, the Lions took a 32ndminute lead when Lindon Miller knocked home a rebound from a close-range Marco Giambelardini strike.

Pagham spurned a great chance to make it 2-0 after 67 minutes when captain Jack Barnes skied a penalty after Toby Funnell had been felled.

THe last few moments were chaotic as Lions had Jack Hands sent off while Saltdean also had one player dismissed and another sent to the sin bin.

Pagham against Eastbourne Town was

postponed on Tuesday evening. THe Lions host AFC Uckfield tomorrow (3pm).

Bosham were 3-2 winners over Copthorne in division two after Conor Crabb struck a superb 83rd-minute winner. THe hosts fell behind but Ben Bishop (40mins) and Alex Barnes (44mins) struck back.

GRAEME GEE refused to use Chichester City's FA Cup run as an excuse for a 5-1 defeat at leaders Hastings United.

Assistant boss Gee, in the dugout with Darin Killpartrick while boss Miles Rutherford was away due to a family commitment, saw last week's Cup heroes get dismantled

by United at the Pilot Field in BetVictor South East.

On a day where all the talk was on the heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz, Chi failed to land a glove on the hosts.

THere was always a danger this would happen to the visitors after their FA Cup exertions last Sunday when they held League One Tranmere Rovers to a goalless draw for over an hour before finally losing 5-1 at Prenton Park in the second round.

THe physical and mental fatigue after last Sunday’s massive effort, plus a last-gasp Senior Cup midweek defeat to Lewes, meant a trip to the leaders was always going to be a big ask.

And so it proved as they were comprehensively outplayed.

Chris Agutter’s Hastings romped home as Davide Rodari (two), Sam Adams and Daniel Ajakaiye put the hosts 4-0 up by half-time.

Corey Heath did give Chi a glimmer of hope with a header two minutes into the second period but that was quickly wiped out when Ryan Worrall added the fifth from the spot.

Gee was offered the chance to admit it was a game too far but told THe Post: “I’d like to say that but I think that would be a poor excuse.

“Hastings were fantastic and we could not get anywhere

near them.

“THey are the best side we have played all season by a country mile. It was men against boys and that hurts.

“As good as our lads have been this season, maybe it was a little bit of fatigue but that is what you have a squad for, and we didn’t step up to a very, very good Hastings side.”

Hastings’ patient football was rewarded after nine minutes when Rodari was found in the box and clinically beat Steven Mowthorpe.

Nine minutes later Hastings skipper Adams slid home the second at the far post from Jake Elliott’s low cross.

Ajakaiye made it 3-0 after 24 minutes with a strike that went in off the far post as he burst into the area on the left.

Rodari then added a 39thminute fourth after again being bursting into the area from a Lanre Azeez pass.

Hastings’ supporters’ biggest concern at the break was the news the burger bar had been forced to close because of a power cut.

Heath headed home after a Matt Axell corner a minute after the restart but four minutes later Worrall converted after Rodari was hauled down in the box.

Sportinbrief  Boxing ST GERARDS Boxing Club’s Jasmine Elkington suffered a split decision loss at the prestigious all-female England Winter Box-Cup Competing in the Class C (0-5 contests) under-54kg bantamweight division, Elkington was edged out by Haringey BC’s Georgina Crammer at the Guildford Spectrum in a straight semi-final.

Elkington scored with some cracking one-twos and rear hand shots but Crammer fired back with her own in a tight opening round.

Coach Gerry Lavelle urged his boxer to close the gap between phases of attacks in the second round, which was again another close affair with Crammer on the front foot constantly.

THe third round was much the same, but increasingly frantic as both boxers tried to swing the decision their way.

Crammer got the nod but Lavelle feels the experience will stand Elkington in good stead.

He said: “It’s all a learning curve and Jasmine will come again. She is definitely one to watch for the future in female boxing. She did herself and the club very proud and will be out competing again as soon as possible.”

THe two days of action was filmed by the BBC and Elkington’s contest can be viewed on YouTube under the England Boxing Woman’s Winter Box-Cup (day one, ring B, bout 11).

Lavelle said: “It is well worth a watch and you can decide for yourself.

Remember any punches landing on the arms do not count as scoring blows.

"It was Jasmine’s first loss and she took it gracefully, congratulating Georgina accordingly as I did myself.”

TZ Runners able to stand the heat

A HANDFUL of races were ran this weekend with a few Bognor Regis Tone Zone members going off for some winter sun to top up their tan.

Friends Lisa Broad and Nic Baglee ran the Lanzarote 10k and finished in one hour one minute and one hour 50 minute respectively in the hot Spanish sun.

THere was also a half marathon ran on the day, this was taken on by four club members.

Lesley Ward finished first for the club in a time of two hours 20 minutes, Leigh Paige was just two minutes behind in 2:22.

Elle Matthews finished in two hours 28 minutes, ten minutes ahead of Sarah Spurr who rounded off a good bunch of results for the club in the half marathon.

Jade Fish was the only runner from the club to run the marathon and finished the 26.2 miles in five hours 32 minutes - a very respectable time in the conditions.

Donna Vincent visited Poland and ran in the Garmin Ultra Race.

Vincent completed 11k on the day on a tough hilly course in a time of one hour 31 minutes.

Closer to home was the Goodwood Running Grand Prix for the final time this year.

Jackie Williamson was the first to finish for the club in the 10k distance in a time of 52:30.

Lee Hayward ducked under the one-hour mark in 58:56. Rebecca Holden and Juliette Garrett showed the club camaraderie and finished together in one hour eight minutes.

Charles Stewart snuck under the one hour ten minute mark in 1:09.52. Allan Brown and Wendy Morris finished closely together in 1:12 and 1:14 respectively.

In the half marathon at Goodwood Motor Circuit, Juliet Stallard set a new personal best in a time of one hour 30 minutes.

Mark Green also set a new PB of 1:42 to round of a fantastic year for him.

Gary Smith hung on to Mark Green and finished in a time of 1:43, just ahead of Ian Bayley who finished in 1:49.

Chi raise game with fine home triumph f Bognor Greens action

Bognor battle in away defeat NATHAN ARCHER got Bognor's only try in a 37-5 defeat at Petersfield in Hampshire Premier.

Bognor skipper Josh Burgess said: "We never gave up and we shall look forward to the home match now."

Bognor Greens picked up a bonus point after a 17-12 defeat at New Milton Colts but it could have been much more.

Greens fielded a new-look backline, with several players out of position, but they all played superbly against last season’s Hampshire Cup winners.

New Milton’s big ball carriers were thwarted as Bognor defended stoutly with Matt Norrell and Ben Barker putting in huge hits. An intercepted try from a Bognor lineout broke the deadlock but Greens showed great shape in attack and regularly got on the outside of New Milton, only for good cover defence to repel the visitors.

A missed touch gave New Milton a sniff just before halftime and a well-constructed passage of play saw them go in to

half-time 10-0 up. Bognor began the second half determined to cut down on errors.

THe Bognor set-piece performed like a well-oiled machine all game with props Charlie Weller and John Galea often pushing back their opponents.

Bognor half backs Alfie Spurle and Ben Woolnough cleverly varied the point of attack using Harrison Southern and Jamie Foote to cause havoc.

Sustained pressure saw Jack Trenham burst over for a try.

Bognor continued to attack with intensity but a rare attack saw New Milton’s No.8 go over.

Nathan THompson came on to secure clean ball and Ollie Page carried with determination. A break from Foote and Charlie Jays found winger Owen THomas to round his man to score under the posts. Norrell converted.

Tyrone Masaki almost scored a try from a Bradley Smith and Ethan Teasdale break late on.

Next week the squad go to Hove for a friendly then appear on BT Sports' Rugby Tonight show on January 8.

CHICHESTER produced their best performance at Oaklands Park for more than 14 months to beat promotion chasing Camberley 27-15 in London One South.

Chi bounced back from their poor showing in Essex the previous week with a fine victory which sets them up for tomorrow's trip to face Belsize Park (2pm).

Blues made five changes to the side that lost to THurrock as Ben Deavall, Martin O’Callaghan, Charlie Wallace and Chris Johnson came into the forwards and Liam Rowland returned in the backs.

Blues made the breakthrough after seven minutes from a fine team effort which saw Rhys THompson, Matt McLagan, Sam Trodd, Charlie Wallace and Tyrese Makasi all involved before Johnson dotted down under the posts. Tom Blewitt converted.

Camberley tried to run the ball at every opportunity and made good use of their veteran fullback Tom Allen.

Finally, the visitor’s backs clicked and their speedy winger scored out wide after 28 minutes.

From the restart, Chichester went on the offensive and a typical Johnson run led to a

Liam Rowland try on the overlap in Vultures Corner on 34 minutes. Blewitt converted to open a 14 - 5 lead at half-time.

Camberley resorted to a kicking game to try to wrestle back control after the restart but Blues’ backs caught everything.

THe visitors reduced the deficit with a penalty after 52 minutes.

A 70th-minute burst by Johnson led to a third Chi try after Camberley regained the ball but then forced to touch the ball down beyond the try line after excellent support from McLagan and Blewitt.

A series of pick and goes from the five-metre scrum ended with Harry Seaman going over and Blewitt added the extras.

Camberley responded three minutes later with a converted try to make it 21-15 with ten minutes left. And what a ten minutes they were!

Chichester were reduced to 14 players after a yellow card but still forced Camberley to concede a penalty that Blewitt put over.

THe referee then reduced Camberley to 14 players with a yellow and Chi opted for a kick at the posts, and Blewitt nailed the penalty to seal the victory.

JACK PEARCE fears a lack of options up front could dent Bognor’s promotion hopes this season.

Bognor host Cray Wanderers at Nyewood Lane tomorrow aiming to bounce back from a first defeat in nine BetVictor Premier Division games last Saturday.

Pearce is hoping to have a new frontman on board in time for the game, either permanently or on loan.

THere was no disgrace in a 1-0 loss to fellow play-off hopefuls Carshalton Athletic but in a game of fine margins the Rocks were unable to make the most of their chances.

Dan Smith has been in superb form with 14 league goals this term, including a hat-trick last midweek against Enfield.

But injuries and availability have served to reduce Pearce and coach Robbie Blake’s options at times and that is a stumbling block.

Pearce said: “If we are going to do anything this year we need to improve our striking options and what we have got up front. We are lightweight up front. I am actively searching but there is not a lot around here.”

Another tight game is in prospect tomorrow, just like the one at War Memorial Sports Ground last Saturday.

Carshalton are in the last play-off place while tomorrow’s visitors Cray Wanderers are in the spot just outside.

Pearce was left ruing the chances that got away last Saturday as they failed to further their push for a top-five finish.

He said: “We had five good or half-chances in the first half and missed them all.

"THey created by their own ability one good chance, we gifted them two others and they scored from one of them.

"We should have cleared it but tried to pass it and never made a good connection, they intercepted and scored.

"In the second half when we had to push for the equaliser, they had maybe four chances to increase their lead and we had three to level. It was a tight game and we just fell the wrong side.”

He added: "Our problem was we didn't have enough firepower.

"I've lost (Mason) Walsh and (Brad) Lethbridge to injury, and lost Jimmy Muitt to another club, and they are three players where if we had any one of them available to us I feel we might have got a point or more.

"I am pretty happy with the centre of defence, not too bad at full-back and OK in the middle of the park but we need to improve our striking options.”

No slips as Rocks win in cup JACK PEARCE utilised his squad as holders Bognor eased past Horsham YMCA 3-0 to in the Sussex Senior Cup. A Dan Smith double and goal from defender Joe Cook saw the BetVictor Premier side overcome their Southern Combination League guests to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition which ends at Brighton's Amex stadium.

Jack Frankland hit the bar for YMCA as they made the brighter start at Nyewood Lane in difficult conditions for both teams to master.

Victor Hensel had an effort cleared off the line for Rocks before the hosts took a 23rdminute lead when Cook headed home from Tommy Scutt's corner.

Bognor's top scorer Smith made it 2-0 just before the hour mark.

Having been denied by a last-ditch challenge minutes before, there was no stopping Smith when he was played in by Arron Hopkinson.

Matt Daniel forced Rocks keeper Amadou Tanagra into a save before Bognor sealed the win.

Leading scorer Smith again was on target after he tucked away a cross from Harvey Whyte.

It was a case of job done for manager Pearce and the players.

He told THe Post: "It was a foul night.

"It was raining and also blowing a howling gale.

"THese games are always a potential banana skin so it was good that we did not make any slip-ups."

THe likes of Hopkinson, Ben Mendoza, Hensel and Eddie Wakley all started for Rocks to please Pearce.

He said: "All my squad players got a good run-out, we kept a clean sheet and we

scored three goals so, although it was not a classic, we did OK. "All those players who have not been regularly starting got at least an hour, so that is important."

Meanwhile, in-form goalkeeper Tangara scooped the Player of the Month award for November.

f Beaten but unbowed

OUR league run and winning streak ended last Saturday at Carshalton Athletic but we are not too down about it.

I felt we lost quite well if that makes sense.

We gave them a good game and we had a really good go against a strong side.

In the end, I thought we were just a bit short up front as we had Mason Walsh and Bradley Lethbridge out.

We could have done with an extra bit in attack which we did not have.

It doesn’t help when the two people you would have up there are both injured. Brad and Mason are probably two people that you would start while we also have Arron Hopkinson, but he has not played a lot of football.

We have young Michael Baker too but going away to teams that are right up there you do need a bit of help sometimes.

Because of the way we lost, it is now all about how we respond and get back on form tomorrow when we play Cray Wanderers.

Luckily, we have got Dan Smith. He can’t do it all on his own but he is unbelievable.

I said at the start of the year he could be the best player in the league. He is absolute class.

I am 90 per cent sure he will win the top goal scorer award this season.

I would be very surprised if he doesn’t get a move to a higher standard in the long run.

He has the knack of being in the right place at the right time but a lot of players have that too.

What he has, though, is the ability to be able to finish it when he is there as well.

He is deadly when he gets in the box but he can also score from outside the area.

We got another step closer

to the Amex on Tuesday night when we beat Horsham YMCA at our place. It was wet, cold and blowing a gale. It was not a very nice night for football!

THe main thing was we came through the game with no injuries and also, obviously, that we won.

We didn’t play too badly but we did not play amazingly either but we’re in the hat and the quarter-finals.

THe league is obviously far more important for us than the Senior Cup. We want to get promoted or get into the play-offs this season.

But it is always very difficult to say that when you get one or two games away from the prospect of playing at the Amex.

THings start to change then and then you really want to win.

At the start of the rounds nobody is too bothered, and, with no disrespect, you are often playing teams that are a bit lower than you are but then all of a sudden you get games against Brighton or Crawley Town.

When you’re only one game from the Amex then things change.

A final at the home of Brighton and Hove Albion is something to look forward.

Last year was my third time but we had got beat each time before that, so it was all the more special.

THe Christmas fixtures are almost upon us.

THat's sure to be completely frantic as usual.

It will be busy that's for sure and if you can come through the other side of that period still up there in the table then it always gives you confidence that you can push on, so that is what we will be aiming to do.
