an extraordinary full council meeting immediately after the county council vote was passed, voicing their disappointment.

Walberton councillors came together to say their preferred route was crimson, saying: “It has historically, from well before 2017, been the preferred compromise route of local communities.

“Walberton Parish Council members were swayed by comments made to them

by Highways England and by our MP and

others in both 2017 and 2019 saying it was unattainable.

“In the last few weeks, we have written confirmation from Highways England that the crimson option is in fact ‘viable’ and that there is no clear planning reason for them to indicate a negative planning outcome.

“As best it can Walberton Parish Council has confirmed this is legally correct.

“THerefore, on this ground it considers

the consultation has lacked transparency and fairness and been unsatisfactorily muddled and divisive.

“An attempt at the end of the consultation period to build stakeholder and public consensus for crimson was unsuccessful.”

Chairman Suzanne Clark said: "Walberton Parish Council is obviously extremely disappointed in the decision to recommend the magenta route.

Amanda calls for action on housing WHEELCHAIR user Amanda Worne has criticised the planned number of adapted homes for people with disabilities.

Cllr Mrs Worne said the suggested standard being set by Arun District Council was not good enough.

Arun is set to tell developers they do not have to include any adapted properties in schemes of fewer than ten units.

For schemes between 11 and 50 units, at least 30 per cent will have to be designed as accessible homes. THe ratio rises to one in two for bigger developments.

Two extra wheelchair accessible homes have to be provided as well. But none has to be built for any schemes which have less than 30 dwellings.

"It costs the country far more for people to live in homes that are not adapted," said Cllr Mrs Worne,"because we have carers and helpers and are more likely to have accidents."

She told Arun's planning policy subcommittee last week she could live as well as anyone in a property which had been adapted to suit her requirements.

"We have to provide more housing for people like me. We are not living in Victorian times when we were shoved in a corner and left to die.

"It would be really nice if we had at least one accessible home in smaller schemes," she said.

"I feel really, really strongly about this.

It is a really important issue to me. I can't get into a friend's house because she has a step.

"THe voice of those who are disabled is

not being heard. We should say yes to at least one home in schemes of under ten homes."

Measures which helped included waisthigh plug sockets, wider doorframes and entrance ramps.

Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C, Middleton) said: "Our guide is a good start but it is only a start. It is crass to say developers can build ten homes and none of them is going to be accessible and 20 new homes and none of them is going to be wheelchair-accessible.

"It can't cost much extra to put sockets halfway up a wall instead of at the bottom and what is the difference in putting in a door frame 3ins-4ins wider?"

Cllr Gill Yeates (LD, Bersted), the subcommittee's chairman, said: "Cllr Mrs Worne makes a very good point.

"But, if we have something that can't be enforced anyway, we might be better to take it as a guide and include it in our local plan review to give it more oomph, for want of a better word."

Arun planning policy team leader Kevin Owen said the guide for providing homes for older people and those with disabilities had been subject to consultation.

"If you want to make further changes, we will possibly have to go out to consultation on them," he said.

THe number of adapted homes was subject to the need to ensure it was viable for developers to build the schemes.

In answer to the initial consultation, planning experts Barton Willmore told Arun making the guidance compulsory would cost about £1.93million for the 1,500 homes planned for Ford Airfield.

Survey explores the impact of the A27 on business owners BUSINESS people have come together to show their views on the current A27 proposals.

THe Coastal West Sussex Partnership has announced its support for the magenta, amber and grey options.

THey collected the views of business people from around the area who use the road for work.

THe survey results paint a picture of the importance of the A27 in West Sussex to local business and the impact of its severe congestion.

Henry Powell, chairman of the Coastal West Sussex Partnership, said: “Businesses, visitors and residents are being hit by long journey times and poor reliability, which means less business and employment

opportunities for local people.

“It is clear from our findings that the A27 has a very real economic impact.

THat it is important to 90 per cent of local businesses, yet over a quarter of business owners are trying to avoid it every single day, shows the absurdity of the situation.

“Each option our board favours – magenta, amber and grey – offers dualling and a bypass solution without forcing the town of Arundel to suffer from division. Magenta is our route of choice because it has minimal impact on the South Downs National Park and would cost about £50m less to deliver than the route that avoids the South Downs National Park altogether.

Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk VOLUNTEERS who spent the day cleaning up Bognor Regis seafront noticed an improvement on previous years.

THe crowds of helpers at the Surfers Against Sewage Autumn Beach Clean on Sunday took to the sand to clear away rubbish and debris discarded on the beach and in the water.

Becky Brooke led the group, organised by the Beach Clean Brigade.

She said: “Volunteers have noticed a lot less rubbish and plastic on the beach than in cleans on previous years, which is fantastic!

“It was so lovely chatting to everyone and discussing different ideas and things we could do to help keep our beaches and seas safe for people and wildlife.

“We’re going to be looking at incorporating things such as the seaweed recording to help monitor sea temperature rise and ocean acidification.

THe group managed to fill two bags full with the collected litter, using as few plastic bags as possible of course.

Among the usual rubbish and plastic waste found on the beach cleans, the volunteers discovered discarded fireworks and sparklers left on the beach, bags of dog poo, a broken umbrella, a

piece of white fence, multiple cable ties and lots of glass bottles.

One dedicated helper spent a long time digging out a windbreaker buried beneath the sand and shingle.

Her hard work paid off as she was rewarded with the Lush bath bomb prize, Big Blue.

THe Surfers Against Sewage host cleanups across the south coast throughout the year.

Some of the other SAS events coming up are Portsmouth SAS Autumn Beach Clean tomorrow hosted by #PlasticFreePortsmouth and #SurfersAgainstSewage and the SAS Autumn Beach Clean at Bracklesham Bay on Sunday.

IMPROVEMENTS are being planned for a leisure centre which serves Bognor Regis.

THe upgrades at the Arun Leisure Centre will be focused on the swimming pool changing rooms.

Initial talks have begun between Arun District Council and its leisure services operator, Freedom Leisure, to discuss the investment.

News of the potential changes at the popular centre, off Felpham Way, was given to Arun's overview select committee on Tuesday.

Arun head of community wellbeing Robin Wickham said the council had been gathering contributions paid by developers as a condition of planning permissions for housing schemes, known in planning terms as section 106 payments, to be able to pay for any work.

"We have been collecting section 106 funding from developers for improvements," he said. "We are looking at the wet side changing rooms. I met two weeks ago with the team from Freedom Leisure to discuss what we can do to maintain those facilities and improve them for a period of time.

"THe facilities are of a certain time and we would not want to reinvest completely in those changing rooms if we wanted to do something completely different there in the future - and there are plans afoot to do that."

Mr Wickham said equipment at

the centre was replaced by Freedom Leisure under a rolling programme.

But it was inevitable the present items were older than those at the Wave Centre in Littlehampton because that only opened last March.

Committee member Cllr Roger Elkins (C, Ferring) said he wanted to ensure investment in the leisure centre was maintained now the Wave was opened.

Statistics from Freedom Leisure showed footfall at the Arun Leisure Centre stagnated in the last full year to March 31 at 435,836 compared to the previous year's 437,376.

But that latter figure was a jump of more than 20 per cent on the prior 12 months.

Footfall at Bersted Park Community Centre, also run by Freedom Leisure, followed the same pattern to stand at 32,111 in the year to March 31.

Overall, Freedom Leisure's activities saw footfall reach 1,016,009 for a 20,221 yearly increase.

As well as the centre, the operator organises weekly and monthly healthy walks - which attracted just over 11,000 participants in the year - and outdoor sites such as Swansea Gardens and Blakes Road.

Councillors echoed Mr Wickham's postive assessment of Freedom Leisure's three years as the operator.

Cllr Hugh Coster (I, Middleton), the committee's chairman, said: "I am really impressed by all that you do. I look forward to further successes."

THe current figure of those who are jobless and claiming related benefits is 1,656, 14 per cent higher than last October.

But the number is 214 fewer - or 14 per cent - compared to the same time five years ago.

Benefit woes most common CONCERNS about benefits made up almost one in four of the enquiries at a Bognor Regis and Chichester help service.

Clients contacted Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice with 5,312 issues which concerned the state payments and tax credits in the past year.

THe service had another busy period, with a total of 22,707 issues raised in the 12 months to March 31.

Debt was the next most frequent problem tackled by the service’s advisers at 3,179 queries. Housing and jobs both had more than 2,000 enquiries.

Chief executive Luca Badioli told the charity’s annual meeting: “Addressing local fuel poverty levels is a priority for us and, following an Arun District Council funded three-month pilot to deliver a home visiting service to the fuel poor, we managed to secure more funding and were able to continue this service during all the 2018-2019 period.

“THis brought a total financial benefit to the community of £201,837.

“In order to address fuel poverty levels, we have also increased our energy best deal extra service targets and brought a further £80,784 of financial benefit to the community.”

Danni Colclough, the operations manager, said in her report that 22 clients were helped in the fuel poverty pilot project and gained an average £9,174.

“As the focus of the project was fuel poverty, it was expected that the top issues would include debt, financial capability and utilities. However, benefits was actually

the most common issue, with clients either not claiming benefits they were entitled to or receiving incorrect rates.

“By ensuring all benefits they were entitled to receive, the risk of fuel poverty can be reduced.

“Most of the financial gain…is from new or increased benefit awards. THe nonfinancial gains were equally as important for these clients.

“THese included being able to live well in their own homes by having correct heating and insulation installed and having their property adapted to suit their needs, such as grab rails.”

THe service – based in Bognor Regis Town Hall, East Pallant House in Chichester and two Littlehampton sites – saw 8,307 clients in the year. Some two-thirds visited the centres. A further one in four phoned and the rest took part in a webchat.

Geoff Palmer, the service’s chairman, said: “THe reach and scale of our advice service gives us data on the real-life issues faced by members of the local community which, together with our targeted research, enables us to influence policy-making at both local and national level.”

THe service had stemmed the losses of the previous two years, he said. Funding for the next three years had been secured from councils to ensure more than 50 per cent of its costs were covered.

Citizens Advice was 80 years old nationally but remained as relevant as ever.

“THe service has evolved substantially during the past 80 years while keeping the same basic aims and objectives," he added.

National watchdog backs couple's council complaint Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk OMBUDSMAN officials have found fault with Arun District Council.

Fontwell resident Susan Smith approached the Ombudsman after exhausting all means of putting forward a complaint regarding an outburst from Cllr Ricky Bower on February 14, 2018.

THe conclusion reached by the Ombudsman representative said: “Mr and Mrs B complain the council did not investigate their complaint about a councillor. THey say the councillor was rude and interrupted Mrs B when she gave her objection during a planning committee meeting. THe Ombudsman finds fault in how the council considered whether to investigate.”

On February 14, Susan was presenting her view at a planning committee meeting.

She said: “I am under no illusions that the decision to approve this planning application has already been made and that you, the committee, are simply expected to ratify this.” Susan’s concerns regarded a planning proposal for the property next to her house.

According to Susan, Cllr Ricky Bower said: “No, no, no, I’m not having that.”

Susan said: “I stopped speaking and everyone turned to look at me. I came away shaken and embarrassed.”

“THe next application was coming up shortly, so I knew I was going to come to that again and I thought he would have made some mention of it. He did not.”

When the next meeting did take place, after being delayed on more than one occasion, Cllr Bower did not apologise.

Susan decided to make an official complaint to Liz Futcher, group head of council advice and monitoring officer.

She said: “THe monitoring officer refused to investigate because she said it was too late. I was really cross and asked to see the local assessment procedure.

“I examined it and found she hadn’t followed the procedure because she hadn’t asked for the views of an independent person first.

Susan then submitted a Freedom of Information application, asking for the name of the independent person who had been consulted. Liz was forced to admit she had not consulted anybody.

Susan then decided to approach the Ombudsman. THey agreed an independent person should have been consulted.

A council spokesman said: "THe council has accepted the Ombudsman’s decision and actioned the recommendations they made. THe complainants have been advised of the monitoring officer’s decision to not pursue their complaint any further, a decision taken in consultation with an independent person.

"THe Ombudsman was provided with a copy of the monitoring officer’s letter to the complainants and has confirmed that they are satisfied that the council have now carried out the agreed actions and have ended their involvement with this case.

"THey have recorded a compliance outcome of remedy complete."

Festive fundraising SLINDON Pumpkins are celebrating their 51st edition by helping to save our seas.

THis year’s display is in support of the Marine Conservation Society and their national campaign to keep the sea clean of plastic waste.

THe Slindon spectacle, a tradition for many, was originally set-up by Ralph Upton, and has continued to draw in crowds every year, now run by his son, Robin.

Octopuses Garden, this year’s display, was devised by Janet Upton, Robin’s wife, who runs Slindon Pottery, just up the road.

She was keen to promote this world issue."I went to Scotland and they are dependent on the sea," Janet said.

"We can't carry on just chucking rubbish in the seas anymore. Every year we have a nominated charity and I thought this was important.

"I've been helping out every year since my husband took over when his father died in 2009.

"His father started it many years ago and started doing pictures and the big display not long after that. He was very artistic.

"Every year we do something different, whether it's something for an anniversary like with the Spitfire display, or something more fun for the children like the snakes and ladders or Cinderella.

THe Marine Conservation Society has a commitment to removing plastic and envisage a world where it doesn’t end up on our seas and beaches. Kate Whitton, a representative from the organisation, helped the Slindon team with their display.

Funds are being collected at the pumpkins which will then be given back to the society to help their campaigning continue.

THe magenta route, if chosen by Highways England next year, will cut directly through the two villages of Walberton and Binsted.

“Our parish will be divided in two by the closure of Hedgers Hill, the only road that links Walberton and Binsted, thereby severing our community.

“We risk a big increase in traffic with the huge multi-way junction which will create a north-south super highway from Yapton to Slindon.

“THe compulsory purchase of likely half of Binsted's houses will decimate the village.

“Arun District Council and West Sussex County Council both stress the importance of the bypass to our local economy, but forcing the potential closure of the Black Horse inn in Binsted, which employs about 19 staff, and the Avisford Park Hotel, the only large hotel in Arun district, and with conference facilities bringing in significant revenue to the area, seems to go against this.

“We have tried very hard to bring all local communities together in uniting on a preferred off-line bypass in uniting on a preferred, more affordable and less divisive off-line bypass, namely the crimson route, but we seem to be a lone voice."

THe meeting of the environment, communities and fire select committee on Monday saw seven members, with five voting in favour, one against and one abstention.

THeir vice-chairman, Cllr Alan Smith, said he had a host of questions to ask about a new policy by West Sussex County Council at a private highways and transport meeting on Tuesday.

THe county council has announced it is no longer going to be carrying out routine weed spraying on public footpaths and roads, to save money.

It hopes to recruit groups of residents in parishes to take on the work.

But Cllr Smith told Aldwick Parish Council on Monday he believed the matter needed to be tackled carefully.

"I will be going to the highways and transport sub-committee of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee tomorrow," he said. "THis is one of the items on the agenda. THere are 14 pages of how the county council are proposing to look into this and also how they want to do it through volunteers. THis involves weed cutting, hedge trimming - everything.

THere is a whole list.

"THey want volunteer groups around the parishes to do this work. Personally

speaking, I am not happy with the volunteer system.

"In this part of Aldwick, we have a more elderly proportion of the population who will be doing the work they are looking at.

THere are many issues that this brings up.

THe issue of the health and safety of the volunteers is one of them.

"Insurance comes into this because health and safety says, although they are volunteers, technically they are agents of the county council even though they are not being paid."

Parish council chairman Lilian Richardson said: "It's a big push from the county council to drop some of the stuff they were doing and to move it down to parish level.

"Some parishes might very well be doing all sorts of things. THey have a different profile of age for one thing.

"THey are also more rural and have facilities for storing machinery like strimmers and grass cutters because they have farmers around who help them to do it. THat is very different to us."

Cllr Richard Gotheridge said he was concerned about the proposal.

"You are not talking about a bit of grass and moss in some cases but buddleia growing up which will eventually push apart the kerbstones," he said.

Police continue to investigate the death of Bognor Regis man POLICE have extended the bail of two people as investigations into a Bognor Regis man’s death continue.

THe 40-year-old man and the 35-yearold woman were arrested on September 22 on suspicion of the murder of Daniel Weyman, 32, in Belmont Street, in the early hours of the same day.

After being interviewed, they were released on police bail until October 20. As detailed police enquiries are still ongoing, their bail has now been extended until December 18.

Daniel was found with serious injuries just before 1.50pm on Sunday.

He was taken by air ambulance to

hospital in Southampton where he later died on Sunday afternoon.

Detective inspector Gordon Denslow, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "THis is a complex investigation and we’re working hard to establish the full circumstances.

"Our thoughts remain with the deceased and his family. THey are being supported by specially trained officers.

BOGNOR REGIS is pulling out all the stops this year to have a super spooky Halloween.

` Industrial action POSTAL workers have recently returned an historic yes vote in a ballot for Industrial Action.

THe vote saw a 76 per cent turnout of union members and 97.1 per cent of those voting yes.

Only 18 months ago the Communications Workers Union and Royal Mail made an agreement for the future, which included an historic pension solution, a mutual interest driven relationship and a joint vision for a successful Postal Service with social aims.

Since the agreement there has been a change of CEO, and changes in senior management. THe new CEO Rico Black has been appointed who appears to marginalise Ruth Harris, CWU Branch Secretary, Portsmouth & District Postal Branchsaid: "It is apparent that the Great British Postal Service is at threat of being broken up in the interests of fast track profit and greed.

"THousands of jobs are at risk with the company’s plans to set up a separate parcels business. THe Universal service agreement which ensures a delivery to all households six days a week is at serious threat.

"Industrial action is always a last resort our members do not want this for the public. THis is now very much in Royal Mail hands."

THere will now be a three week process to conclude dispute resolution, before both sides consider the next steps.

THe CWU have said they want to work with Royal Mail to embrace change and deliver exciting and innovative future for Royal Mail, expanding the role for Postal Workers in supporting local communities and growing the economy.

THe 50 students from Year 7 and 8 from THe Regis School visited the Big Bang Fair at the South of England showground in Ardingly after getting through to the schools science fair final in April.

THroughout the day, winners and runners up from the fair were invited to present their projects at the regional heats taking place through the day.

In total, six students entered projects into the regional final, with four walking away with awards.

Big Sleep Out at the cathedral raises awareness of homeless

By Kelly Wickham kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ON SATURDAY around 77 people braved sleeping out in cardboard shelters for one night to raise vital funds for Stonepillow.

The charity’s annual fundraising event took place in the grounds of Chichester Cathedral and was sponsored by Kiwi Recruitment.

The evening has raised over £10,000 so far and this total is expected to increase with sponsorship still to come in.

Laura Bulbeck, Stonepillow PR and events manager, said: "We would like to thank all the participants for their fundraising efforts, which will make a huge difference to the lives of homeless and vulnerable people and ensure that we can continue to support them.

"We are so grateful to Kiwi Recruitment for sponsoring the Big Sleep Out and making it all possible."

The Big Sleep Out does not aim to replicate homelessness but does give people a small insight into some of the harsh realities of rough sleeping. Before participants settled into their shelters for the night, one of Stonepillow’s clients bravely shared their experience of what it is like to be homeless and how they have turned their life around with support from the charity.

James Clark, from Chichester, took part with his son, ten-year-old Joseph, and his friend, David Mason, also ten.

Joseph said: "I am really excited about tonight. We have decorated our shelter and called it the cave.

"We have got a porch where we can leave our bags and then a bit to sleep in."

David said: "Our challenge is going to be to try and get to sleep! It makes me

feel sad how some people can be treated differently and the government doesn't help them enough."

Dad James said he thought it was a great event to take part in. He said: "They have just started walking home from school on their own through town and they have noticed the homeless.

"They have been buying things in Greggs and places to give to the homeless. I was quite surprised to know how alert they are to it all."

On Wednesday, West Sussex County Council announced it had been awarded more than £340,000 to help rough sleepers get vital access to health services.

The grant of £345,529 from the Department of Health and Social Care was awarded to the county council following a successful application to Public Health England (PHE).

The money is part of the £1.9 million which has been allocated by PHE to be used on projects that will improve access to health services for people with mental ill health and substance misuse problems who are currently, or at risk of returning to, sleeping rough.

The initiative will be co-ordinated by Stonepillow, on behalf of a number of homelessness support organisations. The project will start next February and run for 12 months.

The funding will help to improve the links between hospitals and homeless services and reduce the number of hospital admissions of homeless people in West Sussex. The Hospital Admissions Referral Pathway (HARP) model will provide a nurse and outreach worker, who will be located across various homelessness services, to ensure that rough sleepers do not fall through the

primary healthcare net.

Mayor of Chichester, Cllr Richard Plowman said: "Homelessness is unfortunately increasing all over the country and in Chichester we are particularly proud of the way the charities and churches help these people in need.

"The sleep out at the cathedral in cardboard boxes, often with younger generation experiencing for the first time what sleeping rough is like, raises awareness.

"A very valuable monetary contribution is made to these charities who have seen their grants from the local authorities much reduced when the need is growing."

Tom Carron, local team leader from Rapid Relief Team, said: "This is the fourth year we have supported this event. It is really important to support the homeless people in the area and Stonepillow are a great charity to work with.

"We are glad to do our bit to help them raise money for their services.

"It's really important that the whole community get behind this and an event like this has great community spirit for all ages."

Above and beyond for charity Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk A BOGNOR REGIS woman is preparing for her trip up Mount Everest to raise money for a cause close to her heart.

Siobhan Haney is set to hike up to the base camp of the mountain in Nepal to help fundraise for the Alzheimer's Society.

Having grown up in the Bognor Regis area, going to school at Bishop Tufnell Primary School in Felpham and then Felpham Community College, Siobhan has a close link with the area.

Before passing away in September, Siobhan’s grandma, Wendy, suffered with dementia for many years. She was the driving force for Siobhan’s trip.

Siobhan said: “I have wanted to raise money for Alzheimer’s since my nan developed the illness.

“I was thinking of taking part in a marathon to raise money, then saw the Everest Trek and thought it would be the challenge of a lifetime. It’s something my nan would be proud of me taking part of.

“My nan was incredibly kind to everyone and had to best sense of humour.”

When she’s not climbing mountains, or taking part in sky dives - as she did for her 21st birthday - Siobhan works as an adult carer for adults with autism.

Another big part of her life is keeping fit. Since working as a qualified climbing instructor at Butlin’s, her love of climbing has grown.

Despite her past adventures, her hike up to the Everest base camp is sure to be the most daunting.

“I love being in the outdoors,” she said.

“I love mountains and climbing and

can’t wait to see the tallest mountain in the world and be in the Himalayas surrounded by the longest and tallest mountain range in the world.

“I’m also looking forward to meeting the locals, trying local food and meeting people who will actually be attempting to summit Everest.”

Hiking at an altitude of 17,600 feet, with oxygen levels at Base Camp being 50 per cent of those at sea level, it is no easy trip.

People taking part in such a trip often experience shortness of breath, nausea and altitude sickness.

Siobhan’s fundraising target is £4,700 set by the Alzheimer’s Society.

So far, she has raised £1,505 thanks to generous donations from a number of local businesses including Reynolds Furnishers, Parsons, Son and Basley and Dream Fitness being just a few.

She flies to Kathmandu in Nepal on April 18 next year, then on to Lukla, where the 14-day trip begins.

Siobhan’s dad, Mike Haney, is one of Siobhan’s biggest supporters.

He said: “Siobhan knows full well that trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp will be the greatest challenge she's ever faced but she's determined to get there, in memory of her lovely nan, who passed away a few weeks ago, and for others suffering from dementia.

“Siobhan is an extraordinary young woman who, throughout her adult life, has always craved adventure. Nothing gives her more pleasure than travelling far and wide to go rock climbing.

A climate march for A27 options

PROTESTERS gathered in Chichester on Monday afternoon to ask the county council to re-think plans for the A27 at Arundel.

A new ‘Green Alliance’ of campaigners marched from the cathedral to County Hall in West Street before the meeting of the environment, communities and fire select committee at 2pm.

The committee met to discuss the response to Highways England's further non-statutory consultation on options for the A27 Arundel bypass.

The Green Alliance group, which is made up of Extinction Rebellion, the Green Party, Arundel SCATE (South Coast Alliance on Transport and the Environment), ABNC (Arundel Bypass Neighbourhood Committee) and TLC (Tortington Local Community) took part in a ‘die-in’ to urge the council not to support any of the Arundel bypass routes.

Campaigner Matilda Tristam said in a speech on the steps outside County Hall: "Magenta and grey options will severe wildlife corridors and devastate three villages, Binsted, Tortington and Walberton. All six options are 70mph dualcarriageways that would increase traffic and carbon emissions in a time of climate emergency. This is unacceptable.

"We are asking West Sussex County Council to do the right thing, to think of the climate crisis, to think of the people of Binsted, Tortington, Walberton and Arundel,to vote against the party whip, to reject the magenta route and to reject all of Highways England's options."

The county council's draft response to the consultation was to support the magenta route, just as Arundel Town Council and Arun District Council have done. This route involves 4.4 miles of a new dual-carriageway to the south of the existing A27 and a new bridge over Binsted Rife.

At the meeting, Cllr Derek Whittingham, member for Fontwell, told the committee in a statement magenta would bring hardship to Binsted's residents even though it was a favoured option by many people for various reasons.

"The crimson option is very similar to the pink-blue route, which was subject to previous consultations before the national park came into existence and will involve crossing the relatively new park.

"In short, my heart's preference is for the crimson option but I realise that a line through the national park is highly unlikely to be achieved.

"So, pragmatically, and with considerable regret, I lend my support to the magenta route."

Cllr Suzanne Clark, chairman of Walberton Parish Council, told the committee: "Walberton parish residents are adamantly against the magenta, amber and grey options, as most of them would cause irreparable damage to our communities and to the environment."

She urged the council not to make any decision until "crimson has been given an open and fair consideration".

The consultation closed yesterday and the next stage will see Highways England announcing their preferred route next year.

A 90-YEAR-OLD woman from Barnham was given a birthday present to remember when she was treated by her son, Dave, to a memorable flight at Goodwood Aerodrome.

Patricia Stagg, who was treated to the flight, said: "I used to work for the British Overseas Airways Corporation as secretary to the catering manager. While I enjoyed a few trips overseas, this was unique as I have never been in a small aircraft before today.

"It was an exhilarating experience and one I would recommend to anyone. Flying over the South Downs and seeing all the autumn colours was a real treat, Dave even planned the weather perfectly!

"The flight flew by, so I’m now going to book myself in for lessons at the flying school."

Voluntary Events Assistant – Manhood Wildlife & Heritage Group

Manhood Wildlife & Heritage Group aims to research, conserve and enhance the landscape, biodiversity and heritage of the Manhood Peninsula through community involvement and foster its care, enjoyment and understanding. They are looking for volunteers to assist the Community Conservation Officer and other team members in raising the profile of the MWHG, growing awareness of their work in encouraging and supporting people from across the Manhood Peninsula to participate in wildlife conservation activities. This is an excellent chance to make a genuine contribution to conserving wildlife and heritage and inspiring others. You will learn about the work of the MWHG, have the flexibility to volunteer when and where suits you, be part of a friendly team and have the opportunity to put your skills to use as well as develop new ones.

Drama Teaching Assistant – Dramatis Community Drama School

Do you want to be part of a new and exciting, drama school in Bognor Regis and Chichester? Teaching assistants are needed to support the drama programme in weekly lessons run at Dramatis Drama School (Extracurricular ages 6+). With the school in its second year, they are expanding to Chichester and are looking for empathetic, enthusiastic, applicants with skills or interests in the performing arts to support teaching and pupils.

Individuals would be required to commit to as little or as many hours as they wish with an agreement to be consistent each week. This could mean between 1 – 6 hours per week.

Lessons are held in term time, from 4:30pm to 7:00pm. No qualifications necessary; interests, skills and enthusiasm for performing arts are needed.

Canal Maintenance Volunteer – Chichester Ship Canal Trust

Chichester Ship Canal Trust are responsible for the upkeep of 3 miles of canal and towpath, the Canal Basin, and surrounding trees and bushes. Volunteers carry out all aspects of Canal Maintenance including bank repairs, hedging and grass cutting, dredging and boat maintenance. The main work party days are on Tuesday and Thursday. They work in teams, are safety conscious, yet informal, achieving a lot within a friendly group. It’s a lovely place to work, outside in all weathers, and much appreciated by all those who use the Canal. The work can be strenuous, so physical fitness and balance (as working will be close to water) is important. Mechanical equipment is used and full training and accreditation provided.

Where necessary protective clothing and shoes are provided.

Wheelchair buses THIRTY-THREE replacement wheelchair accessible minibuses costing around £2million will soon be added to the West Sussex County Council fleet.

The minibuses, which will be used by adult services as well as for taking children to and from school, will replace older vehicles and be paid for out of the council’s capital programme.

A council spokesman said: "We have a well-developed fleet asset management plan which identifies when vehicles are due for replacement according to locally agreed timelines.

"In the 2020/21 financial year, 33 wheelchair-accessible minibuses will reach the end of their agreed life-cycle and will be replaced with new vehicles.

` Council signs CASH-STRAPPED West Sussex County Council has spent more than £600 on a couple of new signs for County Hall, Chichester.

The council, which has to make savings of £75.5million over the next four years, used £603.30 from a budget for corporate items to pay for a West Sussex Fire and Rescue sign and another bearing the county logo.

A spokesman said the existing County Hall sign had been ‘in a poor state of repair’ and, while replacing it, it was decided to add a fire and rescue sign for the first time.

He added: “Before spending any money, we weigh up the costs against the benefits in order to make sure we deliver value for money to our residents.

“It is vital that we have signs to help identify the headquarters of both the county council and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.”

health of county's kids ALMOST 4,000 children in West Sussex are at risk of developing poor mental health because they live with parents who are hooked on alcohol or drugs.

The figures were shared at a meeting of the Health and Wellbeing Board, which heard the emotional wellbeing of some of the county’s ten and 11-yearolds was below the national average.

A report to the meeting stated: “Particular groups of children are more likely to develop mental health problems.

“Adverse childhood experiences such as being the victim of abuse, parental alcohol/substance use, poor parental mental health, and family instability can all impact on a child’s emotional wellbeing.”

The report shared the findings of a happiness survey carried out in 2018 among 1,185 Year 6 pupils.

Half of them said they had been bullied in the past year, with verbal bullying being the most common, while one-quarter said they never spoke to parents or teachers if they had problems or worries.

The report also stated that the rate of self-harming among ten to 24-yearolds in West Sussex was higher than the national average, with young people aged 15-19 making up one-fifth of the county’s emergency hospital admissions for self-harm in 2017/18.

None of these problems was new and, in 2015, the West Sussex local transformation plan was set up the aim of improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people.

Developed by the county council and the three clinical commissioning groups – Coastal West Sussex, Horsham and Mid-Sussex and Crawley – the plan helps to improve access to services and supports children and young people, whatever their needs.

The document has to be refreshed every year by October 31 and the meeting was given a presentation about its progress and plans going forward.

One big achievement was the launch of a face-to-face and online counselling service with YMCA Dialogue, while another was being named a mental health support teams trailblazer site.

The aim is to place two teams in West Sussex schools.

While the transformation plan has seen plenty of success, the report showed there was still work to be done.

While there was an increase in the access children and young people had to emotional wellbeing and mental health services – higher then the NHS England target – the increased demand led to increased waiting lists/times.

In addition, feedback from children and their parents/carers showed the referrals process for those needing the services was not clear.

Going forward, the plan will focus on nine priority areas such as eating disorders, early intervention, prevention and targeted services and support, crisis care and urgent help, and working with the most vulnerable children and young people.

Cllr Marshall said: "I am very proud and honoured to be the new leader of West Sussex County Council at this important time for our residents and staff.

"My focus will be on delivering really good services to the residents of West Sussex.

"In particular, my priorities are to make sure we make much-needed and significant improvements to our children’s services and our fire and rescue service, and meet the growing demands on adult services."

He succeeds Cllr Louise Goldsmith, who stood down earlier this month and Cllr Marshall acknowledged her work as leader during nearly ten years in the role.

Cllr Marshall has represented the Storrington division as a county councillor since 2017 and has held the position of cabinet member for children and young people since August, 2018.

He has also been a Horsham district councillor since 2015.

Cllr Marshall will, in the interim, retain the statutory responsibility for children’s services, including schools.

He will support Cllr Jacquie Russell (East Grinstead South and Ashurst Wood) in her new role as cabinet member for children and young people, covering social care and support services for children.

Cllr Nigel Jupp (Southwater and Nuthurst) will take up the role of cabinet member for education and skills, supporting Cllr Marshall with the range of functions related to schools

and education. Cllr Duncan Crow (Tilgate and Furnace Green) is the new cabinet member for fire and rescue and communities.

All other cabinet positions remain unchanged.

Cllr Marshall's background is in retail and he has held a number of positions at director level covering a range of areas including marketing, supply chain and

strategic growth. He lives in Washington with his wife and two daughters.

He added: “My vision is to lead an authority that is open with the public about how it works, that welcomes scrutiny from all politicians and partners, and that creates a positive working environment for its staff. I look forward to the challenges ahead with determination and optimism."

Dear Editor, In response to A. Jackman's letter in the October 11 issue, it is not a case of not voting for a particular party if I do not like them as I stood in your area of Middleton-on-Sea as a Lib Dem, led by Jo Swinson, candidate for Arun District Council not so long ago, of which you seem unaware.

You say that we elect MPs to speak and make decisions on our behalf, which of course they did, by having a referendum.

You say that our ancestors knew that a referendum would be a recipe for disaster. When did they say this?

And how can anyone change their manifesto once in office?

THis is impossible. THey change their minds but not their manifesto as a manifesto is a public declaration of intent, policy, aims etc issued by a political party, government or movement before an election.

THere is no written constitution for our parliamentary democracy. It is something that evolves and I am not critical of the local Lib Dems as

they have shown by their actions on Arun District Council and other local councils that they are listening to the people.

I WISH to commend the letter from A. Jackman (October 11). While the writer does not declare any particular political allegiance, as a Labour activist, I have to state that, if I agree with the Lib Dems on little else, I absolutely share their desire that our country remains an influential members of the European Union.

Deal or no deal might make entertaining television but it is hardly the way to determine a nation's foreign policy.

Now the public has a clearer idea of what does actually lurk within Pandora's Box, a second referendum would surely be an extension of - not a reversal of democracy.

However, my main reason for putting pen to paper is to echo A. Jackman's oh, so valid point regarding referenda in general - i.e. for whomsoever you may have voted, those who came to power in the last general election are there to make informed decisions on behalf of those who elected them, supported by professional experts (in theory, at least).

THat is their job. THat is what they are paid for!

Surely, the economic future of the nation should not be decided by the lies, damned lies and concocted statistics of a bunch of Brussels-bashing, Germancrashing tinpot xenophobes with an axe to grind!

Should we let the hang 'em and flog 'em brigade have a referendum on capital punishment, castrating rapists or lopping the hands off shoplifters?

Heaven forbid! We might as well return to hurling suspected witches into a river to drown should they be innocent or burnt at the stake should they float. It would be no less ridiculous!

I READ with interest your report of October 4 regarding a planning application submitted by a large developer to build a sizeable 66-bed care home on a greenfield site in Middleton.

Not only does the development go against climate change advice but increased traffic will further endanger all drivers using the A259 between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton at the lethal junction with Comet Corner.

Despite an increase in substantial housing developments since the 1990s, this junction has not been upgraded with a badly needed roundabout for the safety of car users, cyclists and pedestrians.

But, are this developer's motives noble and is a new care home needed in our local community? I don't think so.

THe new development will be financially out of reach for most of Arun's pensioners.

THe property developer's argument for the development is that more care homes will be needed for elderly residents in our area and it will provide opportunities for the local workforce.

THis is pure nonsense and the developer is looking to profit from the current crisis in the care sector.

A Competition and Markets Authority report published on November 30, 2017, concluded that local authority funded residents are unlikely to be sustainable at the current rate of funding.

THus, only rich residents will be able to afford to fund their own care by selling their houses or by other means.

THis is supported by the fact that 100 care homes closed in 2018 and 400 in the past five years. THat's 20 per cent of the market!

Jobs have already been lost.

What's more, there are brownfield sites on which these former care homes stood and, indeed, other commercial sites, of which there are plenty, readily available for such developments.

for the needs of a future elderly population, effective town planning which harnesses the professional skills of environmentalists and town planning expertise simply does not currently exist.

Nor has government austerity helped either social care or health care in our communities. Right now, we need to sustain and improve our existing stock.

Diane Davies Address supplied Dear Editor, WHEN one reads Highways England's consultation brochure about a proposed Arundel bypass, one can't help doubting the veracity of some of the information one can't easily verify oneself when one reads the information it writes about Storrington in trying to justify a new road.

Any driver going to face the congestion at Storrington from the Fontwell direction will not be doing so because of any perceived minor delays at peak time at Arundel. it will be because they are going on towards Horsham or possibly continuing on through Steyning to avoid the huge delays that are common through Worthing.

It is common for delays of hours in getting from one side of Worthing to the other if there is the slightest incident.

Just listen to Radio Sussex's traffic bulletins. Worthing to the River Arun is the worst section of the A27, followed by the Polegate area, then Chichester. Arundel seldom gets a mention.

If there must be a new bypass at Arundel, the obvious route is from the east bank of the river to go south of the station and join up at the Crossbush junction. THere's not even any need for it be a dual-carriageway.

Event. Norman Knights.

Arundel Castle will host the final event of its open season, on October 30 and 31, when the year 1102 will be brought to life as Robert de Belleme trains his troops to fight King Henry I. Creativity and conservation inspire children

ARTWORKS created by children inspired by a conservation-related educational activity will be on show at Arundel Museum as it celebrates its Get Creative Half Term Week.

A total of 32 pieces by West Sussex and Hampshire children are the culmination of work linked to The Bowdleflodes' Wildlife Project.

The free educational activity teaches children about the care of endangered species and conservation using the visual arts adn is endorsed by the Arts Council Head teacher of Crofton Anne Dale Junior School, Mrs K. Hoebee said: “The concept of the Bowdleflodes Wildlife Project allowed us to make meaningful links between art and science and gave the children a real purpose for their learning about classification, while raising the profile of endangered species.

"By asking the children to create their own unique animal, we could assess their scientific understanding in an exciting and creative way.

More treats than tricks at party in the park

A BLOODCURDINGLY boo-tiful free Halloween scare-fest party with fun for all under-12s is being organised by Chichester Priory Rotary Club at Florence Road Park in the city.

On Wednesday, October 30, from noon to 3pm, there will be more treats than tricks with a prize for the boy or girl wearing the best scary outfit. Spooky drawings or paintings will be welcome to add to the atmosphere and may win a prize for the top artist.

Activities planned include non-stop music, games, races, a story teller, pumpkin sculpture, bike and scooter challenges, apple bobbing, hook a duck, tombola and a fancy dress Halloween parade.

All proceeds will go to The Apuldram Centre, a charity for adults with learning difficulties.

Youngsters can make their mark at museum YOUNG visitors to Amberley Museum will be making their mark with printing being one of the extra activities on offer at the open-air musuem and heritage centre.

This fun drop-in printing workshop will get the whole family exploring different printmaking techniques.

Younger children can explore patterns as they print their own marbled paper. With a 36-acre site and several woodland walks at Amberley, there will be plenty of autumn inspiration all around with the opportunity to create some beautiful leaf prints on fabric.

Relief printing will also be available - the lines and shapes carved into the printing block will have no ink on them and the print will reveal the parts that haven‘t been carved.

After trying out the activities, one of the most extensive working print shops in the south east will be open for

visitors to see some of the historic printing presses in operation.

Suitable for all ages with equipment provided, these drop-in workshops will run from 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm from Wednesday, October 30, to Friday, November 1.

In addition to these extra half term activities, the narrowgauge railway and historic buses will be in operation, as well as all the usual informative and interesting exhibition areas in the former chalk and lime quarry.

Amberley Museum is open 10am until 4.30pm, Wednesdays to Sundays, with last entry one hour before closing.

The Limeburners Café serves a variety of sandwiches and snacks with hot food at lunchtime.

A vein is said to be varicosed when it has become tortuous and dilated, and hence very prominent, although many use the term to include small thread and spider veins.

Varicose veins are caused when vein valves fail, the common sites being the valves in the groin and behind the knee. The valves ensure blood flows in one direction only; failure results in the blood travelling in the wrong direction in the vein, so called reflux, and this exerts high pressure on the vein causing varicose veins.

Varicose veins cause a spectrum of symptoms ranging from cosmetic effects, through to aching and discomfort within the legs, limb swelling and finally skin changes that may result in ulceration; varicose veins are the most common cause of leg ulceration with 90% of ulcers resulting from valve failure. Early skin changes include eczema, brown discolouration and a thickening and loss of elasticity of the skin - these changes are particularly common on the inside of the ankle and lower leg.

Treatment for varicose veins is by no means always necessary and although many patients desire treatment for cosmetic reasons, it is very reasonable to not seek intervention for veins that are causing no problems. Where veins are causing significant pain or discomfort intervention is

generally very successful in alleviating symptoms and it is very much for the individual patient to decide if their level of discomfort warrants treatment. Intervention however should always be offered where there are skin changes, bleeding from the veins or ulceration.

Before discussing the treatment options with you your surgeon should perform, or arrange for you to undergo, a duplex ultrasound examination. This gives information about both the anatomy of the veins and how the blood is flowing within them and seeks to answer two questions. Firstly, which valve and which vein system is at fault, and secondly, which of the available treatments are you technically suitable for. Duplex ultrasound is pain free, non-invasive and without any side effects and no patient should undergo treatment of their varicose veins without an initial ultrasound assessment.

Traditionally varicose veins were treated with a stripping operation. For some this remains the only technique suitable, and it remains a safe and effective treatment. However it has a number of disadvantages including the need for a general anaesthetic, the placing of an incision in the groin, a prolonged period before normal activity is resumed and post operative discomfort.

Fortunately most patients are suitable for a more modern technique called endothermal ablation, the main dysfunctional vein being treated either with radiofrequency energy or by laser.

Endothermal ablation involves the passage of a radiofrequency catheter or laser fibre into the vein through a tiny incision of just a few millimetres.

Most patients are treated using a local anaesthetic technique where fluid is injected around the vein

itself using ultrasound guidance. The technique has a number of significant advantages, including the avoidance of general anaesthesia, rapid discharge following treatment, a far quicker return to normal activity and significantly reduced post-operative pain; the majority of my patients return to normal activity within 2-3 days, and most require no painkillers after the operation. Treatment is successful in around 98% of cases and complications, which may include deep vein thrombosis and thermal damage, are rare. In the seven years since we introduced the technique at the Nuffield Hospital, Chichester, we have not seen a significant complication.

Recently, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended that all patients suitable for endothermal treatment should be offered this. Only those unsuitable, or who opt not to have it, should be considered for

injection treatment or traditional open surgery.

A frequent concern voiced by patients is the risk of recurrence following the treatment of varicose veins and many seem to feel this inevitable. Although there is an appreciable rate of recurrence it is by no means inevitable, with around one in five patients suffering a recurrence of varicose veins.

When it comes to men’s health, it can often take a back seat compared to women, and you men deserve a look in!

Us ladies are far better at discussing our issues openly compared to men and according to data, men generally avoid going to the doctors, skip more recommended screenings, and are more likely to practise riskier behaviour! Men are more likely to die sooner, live with more years of bad health, and have higher suicide rates.

Of course, you cannot completely generalise, as all men and women are different, and things are slowly beginning to shift. Increasingly, there is more growing recognition that treating preventable causes of death and disability could close the medical gender gap, and we all need to do our bit to push our men to get checks, see the GP if something is not right, and live happier, healthier lives

wherever possible.

The most common conditions affecting men’s health are heart disease, prostate, testicular and colon cancer, and in later life osteoporosis. Chronic lower respiratory disease and stroke are also on the radar, as are mental health issues.

I cannot emphasise enough how keeping the body in balance is vital. If you are an excessive drinker, smoker, and zero exercise person, and live on fish and chips every day, your risks are going to increase.

Mindful meditation and exercises such as yoga are ridiculously good for you guys, as it's more common for you to hide your stresses and emotions, causing internal turmoil on your body, contributing to more risk of mental health issues.

I know some of you may be thinking 'I’m not going to Yoga! No way!' But it’s meant to be a man’s sport and the physical body you can also gain from regular yoga practise is extremely powerful and defined. Think Greek God! So, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

Exercise is key, enough rest and sleep time is important, spending time in the fresh air is essential, drinking enough water and eating nutritious foods daily to keep your heart, hormones, digestion, muscles, bones and brain in tip top

3. Ginger - Contrary to popular belief, ginger, which is a piquant addition to so many Asian dishes, is not a root, it's a stem, which means it contains living compounds that improve your health.

Chief among them is gingerol, a cancer suppressor that studies have shown to be particularly effective against that of the colon. Chop ginger or grind it fresh

and add to all your dishes, smoothies and juices daily!

4. Figs - Packed with potassium, manganese, and antioxidants, this fruit also helps support proper pH levels in the body, making it more difficult for pathogens to invade. The fibre in figs can lower insulin and blood-sugar levels, reducing the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Select figs with dark skins (they contain more nutrients) and have them as a snack or add to your breakfast foods.

BOGNOR REGIS’ popular Christmas float will have extra stops this year due to high demand.

THe Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham Christmas Float is being made, ready for December.

THis year there are additional venues due to popular demand and as a special one-off the float (without Father Christmas) will be located all day at the southern end of London Road on November 23 to mark the switch-on of the Bognor Christmas Lights.

On this occasion all collections will be in conjunction with Stonepillow to help the homeless.

From December 1-24, the float, with Father Christmas and his Elves, and with the help of the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham, will tour the streets of Bognor Regis.

THis year the street tour at Blakes Mead, Felpham, will start 15 minutes earlier at 5.30pm to allow extra time for the crowds of children.

THe float will again be stationed at B&Q/M&S and Tesco on designated days but in addition it will also be located at Sainsbury's in Shripney Road, and at the Co-op in Pagham.

As in past years, seasonal and popular music will be played with sweet lollies available to children.

In recent years Christmas float collections have exceeded £10,000 per year.

All collections are used throughout the following year to help those who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances, and for youth projects within the Bognor Regis area.

CROWDS will be able to enjoy a performance from renowned oboist Katherine Bryer and pianist Irene Radić.

THe two musicians, sponsored by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, will be performing tomorrow night at 7pm at the Bognor Regis Music Club, Sudley Road.

Club Chairman Chris Coote said: “We always look forward to concert sponsored by the Countess of Munster Recital Trust.

“We know that the entry standards for the Scheme are very high indeed.

Friday, October 25, 2019 A COLLECTION of 16 stories with a Sussex theme is being launched in the lead up to Christmas.

Chindi’s A Feast of Christmas Stories was published on Sunday, with the launch party taking place on the evening of November 6 at the Swan in Arundel.

Chindi author, Patricia Feinberg Stoner, said: “It was a long journey - from the initial shout-out to local authors to the final selection, the editing, the discussions about the cover image - but we are finally there!

“Chindi began life as an association of Chichester-based authors, and we are still very much based in West Sussex, although we do now have members from further afield.”

Among the collection is THe First Christmas of the War, a new story from best-selling author and Bognor Regis resident, Beryl Kingston. Beryl, who has agreed to be its patron, will be speaking at the launch next month.

Stranger on the Shore is another story in the seasonal book, a heart-warming ghost story by Angela Petch who was nominated by THe People’s Friend as their Author of the Week.

Chindi is a network of authors which began in 2012 in Chichester.

Its membership is now based largely, but not exclusively, in West Sussex. Chindi has also organised a number of ghost walks that have taken place locally.

A GIG IN Bognor Regis helped raise money for an invaluable community hub.

As part of BlakeFest 2019, the team organised a gig at TAO in Bognor Regis to raise money for Grandads Front Room.

Sedge Seymour, a member of the BlakeFest committee, said: “We decided to support Grandads Front Room because it provides an invaluable community hub, in particular, for people who struggle with mental health issues.

“THis echoes William Blake's sentiment ‘I will not cease from Mental Fight’ from the lyrics to Jerusalem, written in Felpham.

“GFR is necessary as a resource locally which connects and supports people, it is increasingly important to acknowledge and celebrate this independent venture.”

THe money raised, which came to more than £400, will go towards making games for community events.

THere were three acts, including acoustic covers by Sedge Seymour, a punk rock set by Crash Course and a 1hr 45min headlining set of mainly original, intelligent guitar-based pop songs by THe Boy Wonders. THe cheque was presented to Danny Dawes and the team at GFR.

One thing that was noticeable from my selection was the amount of ‘new’ paperwork at the time. THere was the Promoter, an A5 free newspaper principally full of advertisements, for cars, jobs and similar. It provided a good service for companies which advertised job vacancies around the town.

I also have Issue No. 1 of the Bognor Regis Magazine, again an A5 production, covering quite a wide range of subjects, fashion, book reviews, video updates and Chamber of Trade information. I don't know how long it lasted, it was apparently a new publication to allow Bognor people to have their say. Do you know?

I also have issue 1 of a magazine entitled Generation, written by and for young people. THis again has a very wide range of articles suitable as it says for young people and has been produced in a manner to be understood by that age group.

Another young person’s magazine in 1999 was Noise, which was a guide to the South Coast musically. Covering a wide area and ideas was the All About Magazine, this time a monthly issue, covering an area from Southampton to Worthing.

Finally, I have the Arun Business Magazine providing an insight into businesses in the area. THere was also an Arun business news leaflet which provided information on developments in the area such as ‘Exciting

plans to improve Bognor Regis,’ and a new society formed to look after the Barnham Windmill. I am sure this is not a full list of available printed information that was around in the early 1990s Today, of course, most of this information will be produced on the internet and on many of the Facebook pages that promote businesses. Sadly, in future we will not be able to look back at this type of information in a paper format.

Newspapers help us to remember various events through time. In 1998, the Evening Argus reported the extreme damage that had been caused to Rainbows End in Hotham Park said to equate to £300,000.

THe report reminds us that at one time it was one of the biggest tourist attractions in our area. We now have a much larger park, as it was expanded eventually to encompass this area.

Some things, of course, repeat regularly like, drinking problems, questions over new houses but January 1998 contained a good report on the start of work for the new Pagham Village Hall. Also, there was to be a revamp of Felpham Village Hall.

Another headline was interesting, No to a National Park!

THis era had many notable events, including the annual clown convention which was a great highlight of entertainment in the town with hundreds travelling here to join in. Major personalities came here to take part, including Ken Dodd, Norman Wisdom and Jeremy Beadle - all personalities of their era.

Sometimes a memory can be evoked by one word. For me, that word is kiosk

Sadly, in 1994, the town was hit by the final bomb placed in the UK by the IRA. THis was obviously a major event, which did not cause any major injuries, as it had in some other bombings around the country.

THe town recovered from this and then, in 1995, the railway station was hit with a fire in the main building. Sometimes a memory can be evoked by just one word. For me it is the word ‘kiosk.’

At one point, we were told we would have extra shopping outlets in London Road.

THese turned out to be yellow and blue kiosks. To say the public were angry is an understatement. THe aim was to improve the image of the town while providing extra spending power – certainly not the result of their placement.

One cutting from 1991 headlined ‘Blue Print for a brighter future.’ Plans were to be put in for a town manager to be given the job of encouraging new investment into the town centre apparently ‘to half the decline of the centre' which was occurring in the 1990s.

Marks and Spencer closed in August, 1990, also Sainsbury’s in Queensway had closed.

Eventually, we were pleased when we heard that Littlewoods would be moving into the premises left by M&S. Finally, of course, they closed to go to the new environment of online shopping.

THere were to be forums held around the area for the general public to have their say.

Apparently, car parks were essential and there was a need for out of town shopping.

not helping the high street. Views and ideas do change over a number of years.

As this decade came to an end, we were looking forward to the new millennium.

Another pamphlet in Action was produced to encourage training for companies, which included a one-day seminar to improve the effective use of the internet as a resource for your business in 1999.

THis was to help us understand the internet with “an increase in your confidence to use it”. A new paper appeared that of THe Reporter which was produced primarily by young people. It covered a range of subjects but did not last for a long period.

Finally, I thought I would take a look at some of the advertisements in more detail from a 1999 newspaper. THere were a number of Ford cars advertised for prices from £6,995 to £9,995 available with insurance. Bensons for Beds advertised half price beds.

Entertainment was promoted widely with the Picturedrome showing its pictures in Dolby Digital sound. Bobby’s of Bognor had a sale with duvets averaging £14. Numerous auctions and car boot sales were also advertised.

I was interested to see a full page advertisement for Tesco. But this was for a new shopping service being provided by it.

THe new internet shopping service meant you could do all of your shopping from your home to show how new events and activities can become everyday occurrences.

I hope you have enjoyed this random look back 20 years at this decade.

City urged to stay focused HISTORY makers Chichester City are being urged to "stay on the train" after they cruised into the second round of the FA Cup for the first time ever.

Not so long ago the Oaklands Park club was on the brink of going out of business.

But, following last weekend's 2-1 win at Bowers & Pitsea and Monday's draw which gifted them a bye, Chi are now into round two of the world's oldest knockout competition for the first time in the club's history.

It marks a dramatic turnaround in fortunes for City who are flying high in their first ever season in Isthmian South East after winning the SCFL Premier last season.

The challenge for the club is to now keep their feet on the floor starting tomorrow with a trip to Hythe Town in the league (3pm).

Coach Darin Killpartrick said: "This journey continues. We want

to stay on the train and not get off but we’ve got to keep the players grounded.

"We’ve got league games to play. You have to enjoy these moments though because they don’t come around that often.

I want everyone to enjoy this occasion. However, we still need to concentrate on the league."

The last and only previous time a City side had made it to the first round of the world’s oldest knockout competition was in 1960 when they lost to Bristol City 11-0.

Now they’ve done it again after battling through six rounds of qualifying, making them the last club standing who started their cup adventure in August in the extra preliminary round.

The underdogs got off to a dream start at Bowers & Pitsea when Matt Axell put them ahead with a 15th minute penalty after Josh Clack was impeded by

Chichester doubled their lead through a freak goal on 20 minutes when a clearance cannoned off Kaleem Haitham and looped beyond the keeper.

The Essex side looked for a way back into the match but were denied by City keeper Steve Mowthorpe until bagging a consolation in added time.

For Axell, a 35-year-old who nearly called time on his playing career in the summer, it was a very special moment.

He said: “I thought the opportunity to reach the first round proper had passed me by in my career, to get there this season completely vindicates the decision to carry on playing�. “It’s potentially missing out on these sort of moments that makes it so hard to stop – that was by far my best day in football!�

On the game, the midfielder felt Chi were obviously afforded the rub of the green in how they went ahead but ultimately deserved the victory.

He said: "You start to think it’s going to be your day when you get a penalty early on, then the second goal not long after in the

manner we did but I don’t think with how the game played out anyone could argue we didn’t deserve that bit of luck.

"We didn’t play particularly well, on the ball. I felt we could have controlled the game a bit better in possession in the second half.

"But understandably, nerves set in and we didn’t want to take too many risks which naturally invited them on to us."

The bye means Chi now have a month to focus on the league before returning to FA Cup action.

It also means the club win the ÂŁ36,000 first round prize money without breaking sweat - although Chi officials vowed to make a donation to the correct organisation involved with the continuation of Bury Football Club, whose demise gifted City the bye.

Speaking after the draw, Chi coach Danny Potter said: "It’s been very unfortunate circumstances for them.

"If they start a phoenix club from last year they’ll need their money to go their next journey to get back up the league.�

Draw 'fantastic for the club' LAST weekend's victory for Chichester City sparked a rollercoaster weekend which ended with manager Miles Rutherford live on national television.

As one of only two eighth-tier teams left in the FA Cup, the BBC cameras were keen to talk to the manager of the Oaklands Park side as part of their live draw.

Manager Rutherford was invited up to Maldon & Tiptree - the only other nonleague side from step four left in the competition - as the balls were pulled out of the hat live on national television.

After a spot of makeup, Rutherford then watched in anticipation as lucky number 71 was the last one of 79 called.

With League One side Bury going out of business, it meant Chi went flying into the second round - bagging more than ÂŁ30,000 of prize money in the process.

Rutherford was straight in front of the cameras, telling the BBC: "It’s what we wanted, it’s what we got. Fantastic for the club.�

Keeper Steve Mowthorpe, who accompanied Rutherford, said: “It’s amazing. It’s fantastic to be in the next draw and still get the prize money. Except for a big

away day or home draw, it’s the best result.�

It did not take long for those at Chichester to think about what could be.

City coach Danny Potter, who was watching with players at Oaklands Park, said: "It would be great to host the next draw.

And we’re one game away now potentially

from a Premier League side.�

Chi will now have to wait another few weeks before they get back to FA Cup action.

The first round is scheduled for November 8 with the second round draw on November 11 with those ties played on the weekend beginning November 29.

Lions head to Horley full of fight after narrow loss PAGHAM'S pursuit of their first league win in eight matches takes them to Horley Town tomorrow (3pm).

Bob Paine's young side are improving as the season rolls on - but now is the time to start picking up points.

The Lions, who are currently third bottom of the SCFL Premier, know they need to turn dominating possession into taking chances.

Tomorrow's match will be a tough test against a side who are currently fourth in the standings.

That will be followed by a home match against Newhaven in the Peter Bentley Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Lions will look to draw the positives from their last performance which saw them a few centimetres away from picking up a well-deserved draw, Pagham dominated the opening period against in form United but were unable to find the breakthrough.

Into the second period and the visitors took control of the match with two quickly-taken goals putting them in front.

But whatever else this Lions side lack, it is not heart or spirit and they flew at the United

defence in waves.

On 74 minutes, Tom Chalaye slid his shot just wide of the post, before, less than a minute later, Cian Tilley headed home from close in and the Lions were back in the game.

A penalty for a trip on Chalaye with five minutes left gave them the perfect chance.

But the sub unfortunately struck the ball wide of the goal.

Tilley then almost stole a point, but his header was cleared off the line late on.

In SCFL Division One Selsey welcome Bexhill United to the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm) in the league cup.

Blues, who have won just once in eight matches in all competitions, had their match against Seaford postponed last weekend. They will be looking for revenge against Bexhill who beat them 2-0 in the league just three weeks ago.

A young side are starting to show improvements on the pitch which led to a first victory of the season a fortnight ago.

Chi will now look to build on that 4-2 extra time victory over lower-league Swindon Town in the National Vase when they head to Keynsham Town on Sunday (2pm).

The hosts are currently bottom of the FA Women's National Southern Premier, having picked up no points

from their opening six matches.

Chi are just two places and one point above them, with a 1-1 draw at Gillingham the only positive result to show this far in a competitive division.

Blakely's side will have the perfect chance to correct that in the west country this weekend.

They will look to pick up where they left off a fortnight ago when a good all round team performance helped them come from a goal behind to overcome the Robins.

--City's Development Squad put in a strong showing in a 2-0 loss to Charlton Athletic's development squad at Sidlesham last weekend.

Darts THE conclusion of the Summer league with a Blind Trebles knockout followed the trophy presentation at the Newtown Social Club.

A total of 60 players took part in the knockout.

The first semi-final saw Alex Norgett & Lee Hellyer (Newtown Amity) team up with Simon McDougall (Little Legends), but they couldn't beat the team of Graham Clear & Mark Sheppard (Hunston Hares) and Adam Hall (Aldingbourne Mavericks).

The second semi-final saw Gary Harwood (Royal Oak), John Davis (Lamb Chops) & Adam Judd (Aldingbourne Mavericks) lose to Mike Davis (Lamb Nomads), Rob Collins (Friary 'Z') & Ben Todd.

The final saw multiple tons from both teams and with the first double coming from Clear, his team took the first leg.

But with Davis, Todd & Collins sharing the doubles in legs 2, 3 & 4 respectively, the match was theirs with a 3-1 win.

Victory gave the trio the Blind Trebles Championship crown as well as a healthy prize fund of ÂŁ150 which was shared between them..

Top TZ turnout at Great South Run A RECORD number of Bognor Tone Zone runners took to the city streets of Portsmouth for the Great South Run. The 10 mile road race celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019 with a cohort of 46 runners in the blue and orange taking part.

Tom Howell was the first to finish for the club in a very quick time of 1 hour 8 minutes, followed close behind by Sarah Zacal in a PB time of 1:12.

Then came Gary Pidgeon (1:13) and Gary Smith (1:14) who both achieved PBs, while Simon Hunt was just 30 seconds back and finished in 1:14:43.

Karen Vilday achieved a PB of 1:25:14 and Kirstee Porter was just behind in 1:26, taking 26 minutes off her previous best.

Lee Hayward was another club runner to achieve a PB of 1:30, finishing just ahead of Carl Bryant, Andy Miles, Ian Ashbery, Deb Patching (PB), Sophie Glover, Lisa Wadey and Chris Chapman who all finished in 1:33.

Leigh Paige (1:38) and Lisa Broad (1:42) also recorded PBs while Catriona Power and Michelle Lloyd ran together to finish in 1:43.

Debi Haddleton was just behind in a PB of 1:43:27.

Donna Vincent had Garry Gaskin and Stuart Thomson to help spur her on for a 1:43:42 finish while Jo Andrews and Beth Suter finished in 1:45 and 1:47 respectively.

Susan Brigstock-Parker and Nik Crisp helped each other to finish in 1:48. Sisters Julie and Tina Ede both finished in personal best times of 1:56.

Sue Hayward and Juliette Garratt (1:59) and Sarah Ashbery and Allan Brown (2:10) all showed great club spirit to finish in pairs.

Jessica Stevens was just behind in 2:12.

Another race this weekend was the Great Bottom Five and off-road 5 mile course through Whiteways Woods.

Byron Kearns was the first across the line to take the win in 34:10 followed by Trevor Strowger in 38:32.

Anna Kari Enes picked up the other silverware by being the first female across the line in a time of 39:07.

Natalie Tribe impressed again with a time of 45:50. Grace Natoli finished in 51:36 just ahead of Lucy Isitt and Charlotte Seaton in 53:27 and 56:43. Rebecca Nicholl, Sarah Stothard and Chris Seaton all finished closely in times of 57:51, 58:58 and 59:42.

Bognor Colts smash Trojans BOGNOR COLTS began their journey to the RFU National Colts final at Twickenham with a comprehensive win over highflying Trojans at Hampshire Avenue last weekend.

Near perfect conditions helped Bognor start in positive fashion.

Fly half Ben Woolnough released Lewis Decarteret into space and the speedster needed only a metre to step his way past the cover to score the opening try.

Bognor cut down many of the unenforced errors of previous weeks and added a second through Tyrone Masaki, who left the Trojans' cover for dead as he skated home to score in the corner. Decarteret converted from the touchline.

The lightning start continued.

Scrum half Alfie Spurle took a quick tap on halfway, taking the visitors by surprise and sped round the outside to score.

German under 18 international Finn Glass put Bognor on the front foot. Smart play from Owen Henton gave Decarteret space to race over.

Gus Haplik was next on the

scoresheet as he took a pass from Masaki to run in from half way.

Trojans hit back – their strong running centre cutting through and feeding his speedy winger for a great try under the posts.

In reply, strong running from James Billingham gave Decarteret room to touch down for his hat trick. Half time 40–7.

Bognor made a raft of changes at half time which stopped their flow initially.

But the two Charlies - Weller and Jays - linked well to give Bradley Smith the platform to crash over.

Then Jack Hickman and Ollie Page combined to allow Spurle to scamper under the posts for a great team try.

Decarteret ended proceedings after a majestic run from Foote which included a dozen elaborate dummies that astounded the crowd. Decarteret converted for a personal haul of 36 points.

Bognor Greens now wait to find out their second round opponents while the Purples travel to Cranleigh for a friendly fixture.

BOGNOR RFC will be looking to make it backto-back wins as they look to continue their surge up the Hampshire Premiership table.

The Purple and Greens picked up an impressive 37-22 victory over New Milton 7 District at Hampshire Avenue last weekend.

The bonus point win has lifted Bognor up to seventh in the table with a spot in the top half of the standings in their grasp.

Next up is a trip to Alresford tomorrow (3pm), a side who are two spots below the Purple and Greens after winning just two of their opening six matches.

Another side looking to get their campaign back on track is Chichester, who are now eighth after losing on the road in central London last weekend.

Blues have not yet found consistency in London South One, winning three and losing four of their opening seven matches.

The latest defeat came at newly promoted Honourable Artillery Company last weekend when Chi returned home with a losing bonus point after a 16-10 loss.

Next up is a home match against seventhplace Cobham, who visit Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

Blues will look to make a better start than at HAC when the home side spent the first quarter camped inside the Blues' half, bagging two penalties for their pressure.

Blues got a foothold, Zac Conoly making ground on a rare foray into the opposition half. From the ruck, Sandy Wheatley passed to Sam Renwick who burst through a gap in the defence to dot in the corner. 6-5.

But HAC responded immediately, seizing on an interception to run in under the posts.

13-5 at the break.

Chi came out the blocks and immediately had HAC under pressure. A clever grubber kick from Rhys Thompson was inches from being touched down by Matt McLagan. The referee called back McLagan when he was clean through for a Blues penalty.

But it was HAC who added to their score, slotting over another penalty.

Undaunted, Chi pinned the home side back and threw the kitchen sink at them. HAC were shown two further yellow cards in the final 10 minutes of the match, reducing them to 13.

Blues took advantage with young winger Stewart Ellaby touching down to seal a losing bonus point.

ROCKS coach Robbie Blake has said he wouldn't swap his side for anyone after Bognor picked up six points from six in the last week.

The Nyewood Lane side have had an inconsistent start to the Isthmian Premier season, languishing in the bottom half of the table.

But two wins in the space of a week - first at leaders Folkestone Invicta, then in midweek at a strong Kingstonian side - has lifted spirits.

Rocks are now are in the top half, with fans at the New Camp hoping Jack Pearce's charges are heading in the right direction.

With a trip to Isthmian South Central side Uxbridge in the FA Trophy tomorrow (3pm) Blake is urging his side to keep up their good form.

Speaking after the Folkestone win, Blake said: "They're engaged to where we need to be.

"When we are at it and with it I wouldn't swap any players for any team in this league.

"It's small steps but a step in the right direction, we need to keep building on it.

"With the points tally at the minute it will take three or four wins on the spin before we start moving up places."

Rocks took the lead on the Kent coast through a powerful James

Crane header. After the home side equalised, it looked like the match was heading for a draw before Dan Smith struck late to win three points for Bognor.

That was followed by a professional 1-0 win at Kingstonian in midweek, with Ashton Leigh getting the winner.

Speaking after the Folkestone win, Blake praised Invicta as "probably the best team we've played".

However he reserved special praise for match winner Smith, who will take on more responsibility with Jimmy Muitt's departure to Dorking.

Blake said: "One thing about Smudger [Smith] is he is a great professional. No one can say that whatever he gets out of this career he has missed out because of his attitude or commitment.

"He is a credit to himself and he's a credit to us and we're very grateful and thankful we have him."

The Rocks' back-to-back wins came with new keeper Amadou Tangara between the sticks, the fifth number one the club have had so far this season.

Blake said: "It looks like we finally have someone with stature.

"He's 27 years old, experienced at this level and in the long run I think he will be massive for us."

Jimmy departs for Dorking SHARPSHOOTER Jimmy Muitt has quit Bognor to make the move to National League South side Dorking Wanderers.

The Rocks' top scorer from last season has been lured to play for Marc White's side with the chief attraction said to be playing the game at a higher level.

The Meadowbank outfit currently sit fourth in the league table following promotion last season.

Muitt, 24, joined the Rocks from Brighton after a serious knee injury scuppered his chances with the Seagulls.

His boundless energy and keen eye for a goal ensured he quickly became a fan favourite, inspiring his own song to the tune of Reel 2 Real's I Like To Move It. Although Bognor boss Jack Pearce acknowledges it is a blow to lose a player as talented as the jet-heeled attacker, he says he couldn't stand in his way.

The Rocks manager said: “Jimmy has been a fabulous servant to the club and any club would miss having a player in their ranks with the ability he has.

"But we understand entirely his desire to play at the highest standard possible and so although it isn't ideal, Jimmy leaves with our heartfelt thanks for all of his efforts on our behalf.

"We wish Jimmy all the very best as he makes the step up to join Dorking Wanderers and we look forward to seeing him do well.

"Make no mistake we have already begun the search to try to replace him, which won't be easy."

Muitt had scored five goals from 12 appearances for the Rocks this season.

After his first few seasons at the club had long spells either on the subs bench or the treatment table, he made his name last

season, scoring 26 goals before his injury partly halted Bognor's promotion push.

Muitt returned in time to help the club lift the Sussex Senior Cup at The Amex.

He will be remembered by many Rocks fans for a rocket of a strike against Leyton Orient which Nye Camp regulars rank among the best they have seen.

WELL, what a week it's been for the Rocks.

These past two matches have been terrific to watch from a fan’s point of view.

There isn’t a much better feeling than seeing Bognor playing quality football away and getting wins.

We have picked up two good results - the first at Folkestone Invicta, who are flying in the league, with a 2-1 win, and the second away in midweek to an impressive Kingstonian side (1-0).

Our resolute style and recent killer instinct has certainly helped us grind these results out but the additions we have made in Joe Cook, Joe Hancott and Amadou Tangara, among others, has really bolstered the ranks.

We certainly had a bad day against a hard-to-break-down Potters Bar Town (losing 4-0) who were set up to deny our attackers much of a chance at goal throughout the game. It was frustrating as again our errors cost us.

We have gone through some goalkeepers this season, which has unsettled things in general and this really came to the fore in this game.

What worried me the most about the match against the Scholars was the rarity in which we committed their goalkeeper, which was unlike the other four games in the past month where we have enjoyed some fantastic football and caused other teams problems.

Prior to the Kingstonian game, I was sad to hear of the departure of Jimmy Muitt.

Jimmy has been a great player for us and I don’t blame him for signing for a higher ranked side in Dorking Wanderers.

He now joins Jason Prior and Sami El-Abd at that club and I am sure they will be a force in that National South.

I will always remember that goal he scored against Leyton Orient at the Lane. What a night that was!

He was also influential and a key part of our recent county cup triumph and always gave 100 per cent.

Whether we have seen the last of Jimmy is yet to be seen but I think its fair to say he has a bright future ahead of him.

Sorry you are leaving, Jimmy, but thanks for all the effort you have put in for the Green Army.

We still like to Muitt-Muitt!

I have to say a big well done to Chichester City for reaching the second round proper of the FA Cup. Dabba and Miles have really got things together at that club and its great to see them attain this success.

You could see what it meant to the whole team as they were drawn out last (after Bury’s collapse) and pick up an instant £36k!

What we wouldn’t do for a similar situation at Bognor though hey! Maybe next year?

I am really looking forward to taking on Uxbridge in the FA Trophy tomorrow.

Everyone remembers our FA Trophy run in 2015/16 and our trip to Grimsby Town and it would be great to get a similar run together. Another away fixture, followed by Bowers & Pitsea next Tuesday will end a tough run of away days, though we have done well in recent matches!

Chris, the coach driver, has certainly had his fair share of Rocks on Tour shifts recently!
