Crematorium site 'safety risk' ROAD accident fears led councillors to reject a planned crematorium in Yapton. THey voted overwhemingly to reject their officers' advice to approve the proposals for a field north of Grevatts Lane North because they believed collisions could be caused by mourners travelling along the A259. Arun District Council development control committee members said they were worried traffic turning right out of
the crematorium's exit on to the A259 westbound could result in 'severe harm to pedestrians and road users'. THey also decided that the lack of a dedicated turning lane from the A259 into the site would cause shunts from motorists driving along the road. Cllr David Edwards (C, Felpham E) said the intended junction between the crematorium and the A259 had the potential to become another danger
junction like the Oystercatcher and Comet Corner sites along the A259. "It looks dangerous and, I don't want to be the purveyor of doom, but that road has killed people. "I know it's down to motorists generally. However, that will not stop it happening and that junction is possibly worse than the other two," he said. Cllr Hugh Coster (I, Aldwick E) said: "I am very concerned about this junction on
to the A259. What we are going to create here is another Comet Corner. "What is going to happen is that vehicles coming from the west turning into this junction are going to slow down a lot because it's a very sharp turning. "THis needs at least a slowing down lane. I don't think putting up signs saying 'crematorium', which has been suggested, is going to help in the slightest." Turn to page five
