Twenty's plenty in Felpham MOTORISTS in Felpham will be subject to the area’s widest 20mph zone.

Councillors have agreed to impose the lower speed limit on 136 roads around the village.

THe decision on Wednesday came after the £50,000 proposal divided residents into opposing camps.

THe county council voted 4-0, with two

abstentions, in favour of the scheme after they spoke about large numbers of emails and phone calls from those both for and against cutting the legal limit from 30mph.

Typical of the responses were the comments from one of the leading campaigners, Tony Turley, and Bognor Bike Recycling joint founder, Adam Bell.

Mr Turley told the Joint Western Arun Area Committee: “Seven years ago, Felpham Parish Council set out to put a 20mph speed limit on 136 roads in Felpham.

“Twenty mph speed limits were thought to be effective. Since then, tests have shown them not to work. National studies have shown drivers do not change

their habits. We all know the police can’t and won’t influence this limit.”

But Mr Bell said: “It’s important speeds are reduced. THe lower the speed in a collision, the fewer injuries there are and the more chances of survival.

A BOGNOR REGIS teen has shared her story to raise awareness about a serious health condition.

Katie Wyatt, 17, contrasts her life with ME compared to her previous enjoyment of a range of activities.

She said: "I used to do a lot of walking and family days out. Most Sundays we would go on walks to forests and beaches. I would spend time with friends and have lots of sleepovers.

"I don't see my friends anymore. I had to leave college. Having no energy every day is the worst part."

ME, or myalgic encephalomyelitis, is a chronic, fluctuating neurological condition which affects thousands of young people in the UK. It is the most common cause of health-related longterm school absence.

People with ME experience severe, persistent fatigue - very different from ordinary tiredness - associated with post-exertional malaise, the body and brain's inability to recover after expending even small amounts of physical and mental energy.

THis leads to a flare-up in symptoms, including chronic pain, difficulties with concentration, thinking and memory known as brain fog - and problems with the nervous and digestive system.

Simple physical or mental activities, or combinations of activities, can leave people with ME feeling utterly debilitated.

Katie has spoken out as part of Action for ME's 2019 awareness campaign, Are you missing ME?, hoping to raise much-

needed awareness of the condition.

"I am rarely able to go out and, if I do go somewhere, such as the supermarket, this results in me being exhausted and in a lot of pain," said Katie.

"I would like people to understand that it's not just being tired. People with ME are exhausted and have to battle with many more symptoms, like pain and brain fog."

Her mum, Sarah, said: "As a mother, it is really hard watching your daughter going from being a happy-go-lucky child to having no energy to do the things we used to do as a family and who is in pain most of the time.

"Katie has lost all her close friends because they don't understand her condition."

A lack of understanding and awareness about the illness means children and adults affected by ME can experience disbelief and discrimination from employers, colleagues, teachers, health and social care professionals and even friends and family.

Mary-Jane Willows, head of children and young people's services at Action of ME, explains: "It's so important to raise awareness and understanding of the impact of ME to tackle the ignorance, injustice and neglect experienced by thousands of young people, like Katie, whose lives have been stolen by this debilitating illness.

"THese children and young people need the right support to access healthcare and education that meets their needs, and we are here to help."

Memories of Bersted sought from residents for new project TWO public events are being held

by Bersted Parish Council to find out more about the area's history.

Residents with stories to share about the parish are invited to go along to the sessions. THey are being held from 2pm-4pm and from 8pm on July 16 in the main hall of Bersted Jubilee Hall, off Chalcraft Lane.

Debbie Holcombe, the council's clerk, said: "We want to hear people's memories of Bersted.

"As a parish council, we want to capture them and put something long-lasting in this building so these things will remain here for future

generations. THis is an ongoing project with the general public to create that link with them.

"We have gone as far back as AD680 so far. We would like to create a series of boards running down the main hallway telling the story of Bersted for as far back as we can go to the present."

THe work to gather the information is being carried out with local historian and Bognor Regis Post contributor, Sylvia Endacott.

THe project follows Sylvia's talk at this year's electors' meeting.

Appeal after death AN APPEAL for witnesses has been made after the death of a man involved in a holiday park assault in Bognor Regis.

Sussex Police officers are investigating a dispute which occurred in a bar area at Butlin's holiday resort.

During the fight, the victim - a 52-year-old man from Bedford - was punched in the face and fell to the floor shortly before midnight last Friday.

He was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he died on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme, of the major crime team, said: "A fight at a holiday park, which involved several people, sadly resulted in the death of a man.

"We extend our sympathies to his family and friends at this difficult time, and are providing support with

THe town's only late-night opening coffee shop has been serving up cappuccinos and skinny white lattes to make Saturday nights complete for them.

THe popularity of the initial sessions at the Bognor Vineyard Fairtrade shop led their organiser, Danni Peskett, to continue with them.

She said: "THe nights have become more popular. I keep going week to week because people keep turning up.

"I started the late night opening because I thought there was nowhere for young people to go to on Saturday nights that did not involve alcohol.

"But the sessions have become popular, with a lot of families coming along. THere can be up to 20-30 people here enjoying their coffees and playing board games."

Quizzes and competitions with prizes have also taken place. A singles group has held several meetings there as well.

Bognor Regis resident Danni, 28, combines staging the Saturday sessions with her work as a dental technician at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

She used to attend the Vineyard Church in Felpham before she joined the Grace Church in Bognor Regis.

She began the opening from 5pm10pm in April after she was backed by the Bognor Vineyard Church, which runs the coffee shop.

"I just thought Bognor needed something to bring the community together," she said.

She is helped by 12-15 volunteers who ensure the teas and coffees, herbal teas and hot chocolates keep flowing. THe notfor-profit community venture also offers

milkshakes and vegan alternatives as well as extras like biscuits.

THe coffee shop has been open on the corner of High Street and Lyon Street for eight years. It previously operated from the Vineyard Church offices in Waterloo Square for two years.

Manager Abbey Wingate said: "THe coffee shop is very popular. Of our trade, 90 per cent comes from regular customers and we get the occasional passer-by.

"We set up the coffee shop to promote Fairtrade goods and we have extended to 'free from' and eco-friendly products.

"All our coffees and teas are Fairtrade and we try to keep most of our food Fairtrade as well."

Busy days see up to 150 customers enjoy refreshments, with some 22 at any time.

As well as drinks, sandwiches, rolls and jacket potatoes are sold.

"THe bar was very busy at the time of the assault and we believe many of those present would have witnessed the assault and the aftermath.

"We have spoken to some witnesses who were present at the time, but we would be keen to speak to anyone who hasn't yet made contact with us.

"We arrested a man immediately after the assault and enquiries are ongoing."

A 31-year-old man from Wandsworth, London, was arrested on suspicion of grevious bodily harm with intent. He was later bailed until July 13.

Arrests follow school damage WINDOWS have been damaged at THe Regis School in Bognor Regis. A number of them at the Westloats Lane school have been targeted on two occasions in the past month.

Sergeant Danny West, of Sussex Police, said at a meeting on Wednesday: "We have arrested five youths in relation to this. THere has also been some damage to windows at Felpham Community

College. Our enquiries are proceeding."

Reports had also been received by the police of youths getting on to the roofs of shops in Bognor Regis town centre, he said. But enquiries into the damage caused to a memorial bench at Aldwick Duck Pond had been closed.

A lack of witnesses meant police had no evidence on which to base a case to prosecute the alleged offenders.

` Wildlife killed WEST Sussex Wildlife Protection has raised the alarm after being called out to an injured squirrel in Felpham.

THe animal died after being shot in its abdomen in Findon Drive.

A spokesman said: "Apparently, other dead wildlife has been found shot in gardens in that area as well.

"THis is highly illegal and very worrying as the gardens at Findon Drive back on to a footpath and then a park, which children and dog walkers use."

THe offence had been reported to police, the spokesman said.

"We are asking the people of Findon Drive to keep a look out and report the culprit to either us or the police," he added.

` Vehicles entered A VEHICLE parked in Highcroft Crescent, Bognor Regis, was entered overnight on June 5 and a small purse with loose change and a snooker cue was stolen.

Loose change was also stolen from another vehicle in the same road. THere was also an attempted break-in to another vehicle.

Meeting over homes fight AN EXTRA meeting is being held by Aldwick’s councillors next week to decide if they will officially join a fight against housing.

THe extraordinary session of Aldwick Parish Council will take place on Monday.

Members will be asked if they want to help to pay towards legal action by Pagham Parish Council to try to stop one of the largescale housing developments in the area.

Pagham has taken its bid to the High Court to prevent Hanbury (PM) Ltd from building 400 homes south of Summer Lane. Its neighbouring council, Aldwick, has kept a close watch on proceedings. Cllr Lilian Richardson, its chairman, told its meeting on Monday she and some others had met with representatives of Pagham to discuss the matter.

“At the end of the meeting, those of us who were there decided we needed a bit more detail.

"We want everybody to see why we are making the decision we do and how much is going through the books.

“We have received extra paperwork from the clerk of Pagham Parish Council which sets out in more detail exactly how they want to proceed and where they are in the process. THere will be an extraordinary meeting on June 25 at 7pm after the planning committee to discuss this.

“I urge you to attend because it’s an important matter to discuss,” she said.

She added Aldwick had set money aside in its budget to contribute to the housing campaign if councillors decided it warranted their support.

Although the sites are outside their boundary, Aldwick’s members have expressed their concern the influx of new residents will affect those already living in their area. *A review of a land use blueprint could lead to more houses being built around Bognor Regis. THe warning has been issued by one of Arun District Council’s recently elected members.

Cllr Tony Dixon (I, Aldwick E) used his report to Aldwick Parish Council to warn about the difficulties in changing the district local plan, which sets out areas for development and to be protected.

He said: “THere is a groundswell of opinion that people are not happy with the local plan. We are exploring ways about what we can legitimately and legally do and it’s quite difficult.

“It’s a legally adopted local plan and there is not a lot of room for manoeuvre."

Arun was required to earmark enough land for five years' worth of housing under its government target but only had 4.7 years to make it more likely developers could gain planning approval, he said.

THe local plan was adopted by Arun last July. If the council still lacked a five year land supply next July, it was obliged to review the local plan, Cllr Dixon said.

“But the big, big issue with reviewing the local plan is that the officers are telling us the housing figure we will have to meet then is 1,200 a year, rather than the 1,000 which is the current target,” he added.

“It’s a difficult situation for us. THere are a lot of discussions going on.”

Mr Gibb paid a return visit to Southway Primary School after he said it had seen a few years in which it had experienced a number of challenges and changes of personnel.

Vehicle crime Carnival new date arrests made FIVE people have been arrested in connection with a rise in vehicle crime around Bognor Regis.

THe arrests were made by Sussex Police in response to incidents in Bersted, Felpham, the town centre, Pagham and Rose Green.

Sergeant Danny West told councillors on Wednesday: “When you look at the figures over the last 12 months and compare them with the preceeding 12 months, there has been a small rise in vehicle crime of one per cent.

“However, we have been experiencing a bit of a spike in the last two months. People may have experienced it or spoken to people who have and seen things on social media. Insecure vehicles predominantly have been targeted and vehicles have been targeted between midnight and 7am.

“Our prevention team have been focused on any follow-up lines of enquiry.” THis included speaking to witnesses and viewing CCTV footage.

“THis has led to the recent arrest of five people,” said Sgt West. “All of them have been interviewed and the investigation into these offences are proceeding to ensure we get sufficient evidence to hopefully go on and charge these people.”

Cllr Paul English, an Arun district councillor for Felpham E, said CCTV of some of the offences had been widely shared on social media.

“People have got some good pictures.

THey know the names of the people. It seems from a number of these pictures it is the same people (involved).”

to the meeting stated: “Can we please contact the police raising concern(s) over the apparent rise in Felpham of street vandalism and in particular that of cars being broken into or wrecked.

“A recent and extremely dangerous act of the vandals parking a vehicle on a neighbouring drive whilst setting a vehicle alight with the intention of blocking a person’s escape route highlights the severity and concern being expressed widely on social media.”

Sgt West also spoke at the Joint Western Arun Area Committee about the police’s ongoing efforts to tackle drug-dealing around Bognor Regis.

One person had been issued with a community behaviour order on Wednesday in relation to alleged cuckooing – taking over another person’s property to sell drugs. “THe order means that if that person is found at any address in Arun for which they don’t have a tenancy they can be arrested and they could be given a term of imprisonment," he said.

THe police regularly visited five addresses around Bognor Regis at which individuals were believed to be at risk of being cuckooed. A closure order for an address in the Arun district was also being pursued, he said, for at least three months.

“We did that at three addresses locally at the end of last year. At each one, there was a huge amount of anti-social behaviour to do with the supply and use of class A drugs. On each occasion, we completely cleared out the premises and made the lives of local residents an awful lot better.”

DELIGHTED Bognor Regis carnival organisers will be staging their delayed parade this Sunday.

THe Bognor Regis Carnival Association was forced to cancel its original event on June 8 because 40mph winds made the seafront route unsafe.

But their hard work - and the help of councils - has enabled the community occasion to go ahead at 12.30pm from THe Esplanade after the prize-giving.

Association chairman Sarah BooteCook said: "We were very disappointed to cancel the parade on June 8 but it was the right decision.

"But the carnival is important to Bognor. It is one of the main events of the year and we still wanted to stage it.

"People were asking for the carnival to be staged the next day. It is quite complicated because we need road closure orders. But Bognor Regis Town Council, Arun District Council and West Sussex County Council have really pulled out all the stops to help us.

Premises joy for centre VOLUNTEERS and workers are settling in to the bigger women's centre in Bognor Regis.

My Sisters' House has expanded into the premises alongside and above them in London Road. THe additional rooms have taken its floor space from 300 square foot to 1,500 square foot.

Founder and chief executive Julie Budge collected the keys for the new building last week thanks to a £370,850 National Lottery grant.

Julie said: "Collecting the keys was a really exciting day for us. It's been a long year since our unfortunate eviction from Clock Walk.

"We didn't want to move elsewhere because we have always been in Bognor. But it was difficult finding more premises because there are not that many suitable buildings around.

"We have been working out of four sites in Bognor. THere were a lot of problems trying to manage that situation.

"I would wake up and not remember where I was working that day. Having all this new space will mean we can do more of what we want to do."

THe additional rooms are in contrast to the 80sq ft premises My Sisters' House first occupied further along London Road in 2015.

THe community interest company has since grown to 17 employees and 42 volunteers. THe number of women from along coastal West Sussex they have helped topped 850 last week.

THey can have violence, abuse, poverty and mental health problems and benefit from advice and support, information and signposting to other services and skills and confidence sessions.

"We have a waiting list of volunteers because we didn't have room for them all," said Julie. "We will be able to have more volunteers now."

THe expansion will enable two interview rooms to be opened as well as a room for peer group room.

THe previous ground-floor room is being hired out as a community space outside the centre's fulltime weekday and Saturday morning opening and three evenings a week. THree groups have begun to meet there to help to cut the buildings' running costs for My Sisters' House.

"THey have been amazing. Within 24 hours of asking for the new road closure order, we had got it."

THe new parade will have about 10/11 entries compared to the original 23. Some of them have previously arranged commitments.

But one bonus is the likely appearance of the 26 Pink Pub to Pegasus Bridge cyclists. THey were on their way home from spending D-Day in France when the carnival was due to take place.

"We are very hopeful they will be able to take part in the parade, "said Sarah.

"It will be like a homecoming for them.

THey had a massive send-off but I don't think Bognor as a whole has been able to welcome them back."

Sunday's occasion will consist solely of the parade along THe Esplanade, Aldwick Road, Nyewood Lane and on to Marine Drive West where it will finish near West Park. THe park is unavailable for the arena events which would have been held on June 8.

West Sussex County Council project manager Peter Bradley said the formal consultation had produced 12 objections and eight responses in support. He said: “THis proposal would re-inforce the behaviour of the majority of drivers and put further doubts in the minds of those thinking of going at higher speeds. THe use of 20mph can help people feel safer.”

THe existing average speed in the roads was about 24mph, he said. THis was expected to be cut by just under 1mph by the lower limit.

County councillor David Edwards (C, Bersted) said the move towards the 20mph limit began 11 years ago.

“THere have been three lots of consultation and every single time people have voted in favour of it.

“I accept things have slightly changed with the bypass but a 1mph reduction in speed means much less chance of injury or death,” he said.

His fellow county council member Jacky Pendleton (C, Middleton) said: “Do we think value for money is being achieved here for reducing the speed by 1mph on average?”

Hilary Flynn, Tory county councillor for Felpham, said: “THis money has to be spent in Felpham and no-one has come up with an alternative idea of how they want to use the money in Felpham.”

District councillors Paul English and Hugh Coster spoke for and the against the scheme.

New embroidery shown in church

VISITORS filled Climping's parish church to admire the handiwork of three of its members.

THey took the chance to see the display of spectacular new embroidered sets of falls - the decorated cloths that hang on the front of the altar and pulpit created by Susan Faber, Juliet Fellick and Jean Sprenkel.

THe congregation members spent about 675 hours making the falls for St Mary's Church.

Church press officer Timothy Bell said: "THree years ago, these ladies decided their lovely Saxon and Norman church should have new falls.

"Susan designed them, Juliet embroidered them and Jean worked on the embellishments.

"Fabrics had to be chosen, with tracing, webbing, cutting out and placing before the embroidery and embellishment could set."

THe nine new falls were the

centrepiece of the exhibition at the church last weekend. THe team's work diaries were also on show.

THe displays were complemented by superb floral displays organised by Anne Saltwell and the Clymping Flower Circle.

Music was provided by the church's organist, Peter Nunn. Vintage cream teas were served on the Saturday afternoon. Tea, coffee and biscuits were provided throughout the two days to help the event raise £1,119 to pay for the full cost of the new falls.

THe Church of England has traditionally used different colours at each season of the Christian year.

Green is for harvest and ordinary times of the year, purple for Advent and Lent, red for Pentecost and many martyrs' and saints' days and cream for Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, Ascension and Trinity, as well as All Saints' Day.

Bognor Regis Town Council's members said they were mindful about the health concerns of residents. THey also protested about the plans because it believed the mast would be an eyesore close to THe Steyne conservation area.

But Arun planning officer Amber Willard said in her report EE and THree's planning agent had shown the proposed equipment and installation met the requirements of the radio frequency public exposure guidelines of the International Commission on non ionising radiation as laid down to the EU Council. THis limited the exposure of the general public to electromagnetic fields.

"THe site is not situated within the conservation area and the proposal is not deemed to impact its appearance due to the conservation area being sited approximately 90m away.

"And the height at which the structures are placed are unlikely to be seen when looking towards the conservation area.

"Due to the high level of the host building at Fitzleet House, approximately 45m above floor level, it would mean that the installation is not at eye level view by pedestrians and, therefore, it is not considered readily visible."

Telecom equipment had also been on the roof of Fitzleet House for years, she added.

Town's first 5G mast approved TWO mobile telecom operators have been given approval for a 5G mast in Bognor Regis.

EE and THree were given planning permission by Arun District Council for the 10m-high structure on top of Fitzleet House. THe backing came in spite of health concerns raised by six objectors.

One of them, Frances Moore Ranson, opposed the planning application by compiling a 90-page scientific research report about the dangers once the 5G network was switched on.

"No-one in the town will be safe even in their own homes as the high radiation frequency travels through brick," she claimed.

"But, not only that, because it is set on at a low level on lamp-posts with many larger masts scattered about.

"We will all be affected,in particular our skin and eyes. THere will be nowhere even in our own homes - to switch off.

"Particularly vulnerable organs are the brain's memory and ability to concentrate and the heart.

"I keep hearing it will give us smart homes but what is smart about investing in a dangerous experiment on our lives?

"I feel much more research to find the safety level needs to happen prior to moving forward."

` Dog bins request PARISH councillors have asked for help to install new dog waste bins around Bersted.

Potential sites for four of the receptacles have been identified during the parish council's annual review of the service.

But the cost of buying and emptying a bin comes to £600 in its first year and is another £300 for each following year.

THe parish council members agreed to request assistance from Arun District Council, which supplies the bin and emptying service, towards the expense.

Cllrs Martin Lury and Gill Yeates sit on both councils.

Parish council chairman Cllr Brian Knight said: "To me, it's not just the cost of £2,400 this year, it's next year as well.

"Once we put a bin in, we have no control over how much they charge.

So, if they decided to charge £500 a year we would have no choice but to pay it."

THe proposed sites for the bins were Bersted Park estate, Chalcraft Lane, Shripney and Rowan Way.

Tribute bands are festival highlight THREE stages of music and entertainment will ensure plenty of fun as a Walberton festival returns for its fourth year.

CoreFest will be bigger and better when it takes place at its beautiful location in the Hft Sussex Orchards this weekend.

THis year's musical line-up includes top tribute bands ABBA Magic, THe Who:Quadrophenia and Chaz and Dave along with local favourites Iron Tyger, Murdoch's Crazy Eyes, Indya, Cyanide Sundae and Southern Bandits.

A huge variety of games and activities will also take place. THese will range from interactive storytelling and a silent disco to a circus tent with performances and workshops. Everything will be fully inclusive.

Hft is a national charity which supports adults with learning disabilities. Its operations manager, Sarah Shallis, said:

"CoreFest has become a key fixture in the community's diary and we're looking forward to seeing lots of locals there.

"Offering a great day out for all ages and abilities, the festival is a chance to enjoy some great music, spend time with friends and family and raise money so that we can continue to support people with learning disabilities to live the best life possible."

CoreFest was inspired by a person supported by Hft who became frustrated by a lack of chances for disabled people to enjoy live music and suggested the charity should hold its own event.

Accessible camping facilities and two licensed bars will also be available.

Hft Sussex, in Eastergate Lane, supports more than 70 people.

Amie offers to help club FINANCIAL administrator Amie Whalen is helping to balance the books at the Rocks.

Mum-of-two Amie has taken up the voluntary role of treasurer at Bognor Regis' football club. She has a wealth of experience through her job in finance at Chichester District Council and decided to use that to help the club.

She is a big Rocks fan and attends every home game and several away games a season with her husband, Sean, and their two sons, Edward, nine, and George, seven.

She said: "I saw that the club needed volunteers to help out and thought I would offer my services.

Shops urged to open their doors to dogs and boost their businesses HUNDREDS of dog owners around Bognor Regis are calling on retailers to open their doors to their pets.

THey say the influx of trade which would be sparked by allowing their four-legged friends into shops would help to reverse the decline of high street shopping.

THe newly-formed Bognor Regis Dog Owners Forum has printed stickers which dog-friendly shop owners can place in their front windows or dogs to show canines are welcome.

John Wiltshire, who helped to form the forum, said: "We believe Bognor Regis shops are missing a great opportunity to increase local business by becoming dog-friendly.

"Many of us readily admit we shop online because we don't want to leave

our companion dogs at home or in a car and certainly not tied up outside a shop while we are inside.

"I spend at least ÂŁ2,000 online with people like Amazon. I also buy from companies like Wilko online because I can't get into their store in town with my dog.

"I would be delighted to go round there with her as I would the likes of Robert Dyas."

THe forum's initial estimate of 1,000 dog owners around Bognor Regis has been quickly doubled after its number of members has shot up to 400 in two weeks.

"Absolutely everyone we have spoken to is behind this 100 per cent. We know there are people whose dogs will not be suitable to take into shops and the dog

owners know that.

"But every other dog should be allowed in with their owner. If assistance dogs are, why aren't ours?

"No-one wants to leave their dog outside a shop because there are so many dog thefts.

"You can't leave them in cars because they can die from the heat. It's not right to leave a dog at home any more than it is a child."

THe forum was formed on Facebook to share information about dog issues in the area, walks and businesses that are dog-friendly.

Its rapid growth has convinced Mr Wiltshire, 74, of Marine Drive West, that a huge unmet demand exists among his fellow dog owners to be able to go

shopping in town centres.

He has always been around dogs and has a springer doodle, Popsie, four.

His neighbour, and fellow lifelong dog lover, Alison Sharples, 67, has Sheba, an 11-year-old border collie.

She said: "I would love to be able to stroll around the town centre with Sheba.

It's a 30 minute walk there and back and some time in the shops.

"THat would make a morning of it, with a cup of coffee somewhere, rather than having to rush around without Sheba.

"So long as the dog does not have health issues, they should be allowed anywhere. THey are part of the family."

A further boost would come from promoting the dog-friendly businesses to tourists, said Mr Wiltshire.

"A town that is unfriendly to dogs creates a real problem to them because they are not allowed to be left in B&Bs, caravans and rental homes.

"We would certainly encourage more dog-friendly holiday-makers if we changed our attitude," he said.

THe first business to gain one of the forum's stickers is the cafe in West Park.

Mr Wiltshire is seeking further businesses to place them on its webpage to enable a directory to be compiled and provide an at a glance guide to dog owners about the best places for them to shop with their pets.

"We would like to see this go national," he added. "If it spread across the country, imagine what an impact it would have on the amount of business in shops."

HISTORY has been brought to life in a series of new walks around Bognor Regis.

THe heritage trails website and paper copies were launched on Sunday.

THe wet weather kept numbers down to some 50-plus but the event - held for Sussex Day - was a success with those who went along to Hotham Park.

THe five trails cover various aspects of the past of Bognor Regis. THey have been compiled by Bognor Regis Town Council's heritage partnership board.

Its chairman, Ken Blamires, has driven the project forward. He said: "THe weather was a factor in number of attendees but we got the message out there and feedback about the project has been very positive.

"THe tree trail walk went well, with lots of questions about the history and age of the trees, which gives us a further area in which we can develop this trail. People commented that, having walked the park many times, they did not realise the range of tree specimens which exist there."

A pre-launch drinks reception at the park lodge was attended by the town

mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, and other guests.

Jane Smith, the town crier, read the Sussex Proclamation at the park's bandstand and the Bourne Concert Band gave two hearty renditions of Sussex by the Sea during its music in the park concert. THe guided tree walk followed.

THe trails produced are: Bognor Regis Seafront 'Fun and Facts' Trail, Hotham Park Heritage Trust Tree Trail, THe Richard Hotham Trail, Bognor Regis Town Trail and Bognor Regis Pier and Western Bognor Regis Trail. Backing came from the Heritage Lottery Fund and others.

THe trails can be seen at: bognorregistrails. co.uk Hard copies are at the town hall, museum, library and Regis Centre among other outlets.

More than seven community groups worked together to produce the guides. *A blue plaque for the late geologist Martin Venables will be unveiled at 10am next Wednesday at the Beach Cafe, near Rock Gardens, as the third in a town heritage trail. A guided walk and talk by Peter Bone will follow.

Labs are formula for success

NEW laboratories at Felpham Community College are making the appliance of science easier.

THe two new workspaces opened this month as the first stage of an £11.5m upgrade of the college's facilities.

THeir completion takes the number of labs at the college to ten. THis means every science lesson can be taken in a lab - rather than some having to take place in English or maths classrooms.

Martin Vugler, the college's head of science, pictured top right, said: "THese laboratories are really good. THe fixtures and fittings are of a high standard.

"THey are a lot better technology than we have ever had before.

"Our previous labs were opened in 2003 and the equipment has come a long way since then. THese put us in the 21st century.

THe latest technology which has been installed includes an interactive board and a fume cupboard with a filtration system and water system. It also has room for the college's 32-strong classes.

"We now have more versatility in what we can teach," said Mr Vugler.

"THese laboratories will improve our exam results.

"THey are one of the building blocks.

THey will benefit the students and that is the most important thing."

THe science department has 13 members of staff, including nine fulltime employees. THree of them are lab technicians.

THe rooms are so new the equipment is still arriving. But their arrival has signalled the start of a new beginning for the college.

"When the new block is up and running, we should have more than enough facilities to deal with the two new

intakes of pupils which the headteacher, Mark Anstiss, has decided to take."

Some of the first students to benefit from the new labs include Patryk Lickoswki and Katy Ribbons, both aged 12.

Patryk said: "I like the new laboratories.

THey have a lot of equipment we didn't have before.

"Everything is high-tech. We have a new board that does not need a projector and it shows colours really well.

"I enjoy science because there are so many things to discover."

Katy said: "THe board is a lot better

because the pictures it shows are better.

"THe chairs to the tables are a bit higher as well and that makes it easier to reach the tables.

"I like experimenting with different things and finding out new stuff, like what the Earth is made of."

Most of the new facilities at the college in Felpham Way are set to open this October. THey include media and drama facilities.

A farewell as books moved

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk LAST SATURDAY, St Wilfrid’s Hospice shared a goodbye to the Grosvenor Road building with some of the supporters, local residents, staff and families who have helped make the place so special over the last 32 years.

Among those reminiscing over the dozens of photo albums was Debbie Johnson, attending in memory of her father.

"I really appreciated the chance for a trip down memory lane," Debbie said. "Looking back at the Moonlight Walk 2012 pictures where I met my then future husband so soon after my father had passed, brings back just how important the support of St Wilfrid’s was after he died. You see how cherished this place is to the people it’s helped through grief.

"I’m sure that many more families are really going to appreciate St Wilfrid’s support from the lovely new hospice in Bosham."

On Monday, lead chaplain, James Cooper led a congregation of volunteers, staff and trustees in transferring the memory books that hold the names of all those who have died under the care of St Wilfrid’s.

Each page has been lovingly tended to by volunteer calligraphers to create a permanent record.

James said: "Each book has its page turned daily so that each day we show those who have died with us on that same day over the past three decades.

It’s all part of respecting that our patients are our patients in life and in death.

"THeir new home in the new hospice chapel continues the tradition of providing a beautiful and restful place of quiet reflection."

St Wilfrid’s Hospice is opening its state of the art new building in Walton Lane, Bosham, to new patients on July 8.

Chief executive Alison Moorey said: "We’ve been extremely proud residents of Donnington and these events have been an opportunity for us all to reflect on how far we have come.

"With the memory books safely placed in their new home with us in Bosham, we can honour the past whilst we look to the future.

"We are excited to soon share our new hospice with people and show how much love and compassion there can be in tailored end of life care."

A CHICHESTER and Bognor Regis charity has announced the death of its founder.

Stonepillow, the homeless charity, has confirmed the death of the Rev Hilary Parsons.

Hilary founded the charity, formerly known as St Richard of Chichester Christian Care Association, in 1989, following the death of a young homeless man in Chichester.

Hilary was one of two deacons at St Richard’s Catholic Church in Cawley Road and held a meeting to see how they could provide practical support to homeless people in the city.

He decided a hostel was needed and the Carmelite nuns from the convent in Hunston gifted the charity the gardener’s cottage across the road, which is known as St Joseph’s. Today, it is home to Stonepillow’s 17 bed 24-hour hostel, and 2019 marks the charity’s 30th anniversary.

Over the last three decades, they have expanded their services to support the growing number of people who find themselves on the streets. Stonepillow provides a range of services in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, including day centres, hostels, a recovery service, supported housing and two charity shops.

Clare Apel, Stonepillow trustee, said: "Hilary was a wonderfully caring and spiritual man. He had great compassion and was very much loved by everyone who met him."

Uni wheelchair AN AMBITIOUS basketball player from Chichester has thanked a charity after she was given thousands of pounds to buy a new wheelchair that will help her play at the highest level.

Bobbi Clarke, a student at the University of Chichester, received more than £2,000 from the Steve Bernard Foundation for the custom-made chair, which she will use for the upcoming season. THe 24-year-old, who plays for Littlehampton Tornadoes wheelchair basketball club, was an aspiring boxer before suffering a seizure last year which left her unable to move her right arm and leg.

Final-year student Bobbi, who is training to become a primary school teacher, said: “I spent my entire life playing sport so it has been hard not being able to do what I love. I’m so grateful to the Steve Bernard Foundation and can’t wait to start using the new chair in competitive games.

“Basketball wheelchair has given me an opportunity to be active again,

helping my physical and mental health enormously. I am really enjoying training with the team and would be lost without it.”

THe foundation, which is based in Bournemouth, was created and named in honour of the University of Chichester student who died in a car crash in 2005.

THe charity raises money for community sport projects across the south coast, often through extreme activities, and has recently celebrated reaching a milestone £400,000 target.

THe custom-made wheelchair, which cost around £4,000 and took three months to build, will help Bobbi compete with the league’s best wheelchair basketball players, with a faster profile and extendable height.

She and the university had already raised around £2,000 through charity projects with fellow students, before the foundation match-funded the rest.

A CAMPAIGN promoting West Sussex’s many visitor attractions is driving forward with eye-catching, newly-branded fleet vehicles.

Several county council vehicles now sport promotions for ‘Experience West Sussex’, which showcases local attractions, helps people to discover all our county has to offer, and enables residents and visitors to ‘see more, do more, explore more’.

Now in its fifth year, Experience West Sussex has a dedicated and growing social media following of around 40,000.

THe website features more than 300 local businesses, and there is a regular e-newsletter people can sign up to.

THe initiatives are delivered through a recently launched countywide Experience West Sussex Partnership of local authorities, including the county council, which work together to share best practice, and provide leadership in the promotion and support of tourism.

County council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “West Sussex is blessed with an abundance of fascinating places to visit and stay, from historic castles to vast country estates, the South Downs to the coast, pretty villages nestled in the landscape to towns packed with retail experiences, heritage and culture.

“Experience West Sussex celebrates this wealth of visitor experiences to be enjoyed and the economic value and quality of tourism to our businesses and county. THe tourism sector delivers 48,800 jobs and close to £1billion to the county’s economy annually.

“We have a vibrant and diverse visitor economy and these branded vehicles are one way we are highlighting and promoting its success.”

THe vehicles were rolled out in time for Sussex Day on Sunday, June 16, which celebrated the county's rich history and culture.

` Step project A PROJECT addressing high rates of depression and loneliness among men in the UK and Europe has been launched by the University of Chichester.

THe initiative, known as Step by Step, will look to improve the mental and physical health of men at high risk of social isolation through engaging with others in speciallybuilt sheds and workshops.

It follows a recent European Commission report which found that men account for 77 per cent of all suicides in the EU. THe university is partnering with organisations to develop a new model for the internationally-recognised men in sheds concept – community spaces where people meet to learn new skills and engage in activities used in the labour market – to improve their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

As many as 94 new sheds will be built in the UK. Dr Ruth Lowry, a reader in the Psychology of Active Living from the university, is leading the evaluation of the project, which will conclude in 2021.

She said: “Step by Step will make a real difference to men, whether socially-isolated or suffering poor mental or physical health.

“THe approaches the project will develop through the workshops – including social engagement, skills development and confidencebuilding – will not only benefit them, but also the wider community.”

Participants will be trained as health and employment champions for this new approach, as well as in soft skills, interviewing and empowerment.

Poll shows need to be scam aware TWO out of three people in south-east England had been approached by a scammer, a poll for a Chichester and Bognor Regis residents' help-point has found.

Sixty four per cent of residents were asked to part with their money in dubious circumstances in the past two years, says Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice.

Worringly, only 46 per cent of those targeted had spoken to anyone about their experience.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice is staging events to raise awareness of the need to report and talk about scams.

THe next session will take place from 9.30am-1pm next THursday at the Tesco superstore in Shripney Road, Bognor Regis. THis follows the initial session yesterday at Chichester's Tesco Extra. THe events are being supported by trading standards officers, Sussex Police and NatWest Community Banking.

Luca Badioli, Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice's chief executive, said: "Stop, report, talk: Be #scamaware is our message to people in Arun and Chichester.

"We're finding that, although many people have come into contact with scammers, very few people are speaking up about this issue.

"People can sometimes feel foolish or embarrassed reporting their experiences but, sadly, this means perpetrators are getting away scotfree.

"In reality, all of us can have the bad

luck of being targeted with a scam.

"We hope this scams awareness campaign will encourage people to share their stories and learn tips to stop scammers running off with people's money."

More than half of the scams reported to the Citizens Advice consumer service in the past year used wellestablished methods away from the internet.

THese classic tactics from the scammers' textbook included unsolicited doorstep selling, mail and cold calling, and saw victims lose an average of £3,000.

Fraudsters who use these methods are known to usually target older, more vulnerable people.

THe recommendations by Citizens Advice to avoid becoming a victim of a conman or conwoman are to be suspicious about an unexpected contact from an individual or company, regard an offer which is too good to be true as fake, never send money to a stranger and never be rushed into making a decision.

Residents are also asked to look for someone who is receiving extra mail or withdrawing large sums of cash.

A total of 19,496 potential scam cases were reported to the Citizens Advice consumer service in 2018. THis was an eight per cent increase on the 18,075 reported the previous year.

Citizens Advice commissioned Populus for an online sample of 2,016 British adults between May 24 and 27 this year about their experiences of being scammed.

A daily mile for the kids can help to improve their fitness

THe Daily Mile sees children run, jog or walk - at their own pace - outside in the fresh air with their friends. Taking place in just 15 minutes, most children average a mile, or more, each day, with no set-up, tidy-up or equipment needed.

As well as being social, non-competitive and fun, it can help to improve fitness, achieve a healthy weight and boost

emotional wellbeing.

Polly Neville is the PE co-ordinator at Bosham Primary School. She said: "We started the Daily Mile in one class and had so much success, we rolled it out to every class in the school three years ago.

"We find that it is an essential tool in keeping children engaged in their learning, giving them a wake-up break whenever needed!

"Our children are definitely fitter and more resilient and teachers relish the opportunity to chat to children oneon-one in an informal way, not usually possible within the lesson. We feel that the Daily Mile supports every aspect of our children's health and wellbeing and is great fun as well!"

Penny Wojcik, PE leader at St Richard’s Catholic Primary School, Chichester, said THe Daily Mile was popular with pupils, with one year 3 child telling her: "THe mile run not only keeps you fit but gives our brain time to sort out the things we have done in the day and it gives us a break from our work! I enjoy the run because it is a time to run with friends!"

But it isn’t just pupils who are benefiting.

Penny said: "We also have three teachers who were inspired to do a mini triathlon and have chosen to keep up the running and are taking part in park runs and a 10k."

Call to connect cash to homes MONEY paid by developers to improve services must be spent in the communities where building takes place, a Bognor Regis councillor has demanded.

Arun District Council is getting ready to introduce the multi-million pound community infrastructure levy on many new developments from next year.

THe cash has to be spent on off-site improvements to help surrounding areas cope with the impact of the new building.

Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said the use of the funding should be closely linked with the development site unlike the current contributions, known as section 106 funding.

"Section 106 money from Pagham is being spent in Felpham. For a development in central Bognor Regis, the money is being spent on Pagham Harbour," he told Arun's planning policy sub-committee.

"It makes no sense whatsoever. Selling this to the average person in the street, they want to see some payback for having to put up with additional development in their community. We have got to do a sales job on this."

But he said he still had reservations about the level at which the levy had been set.

Other sub-committee members at Tuesday's meeting spoke about their concerns at a potential loophole which could allow developers to avoid paying the levy.

THe council's planning officers had recommended student accommodation proposals should be exempt from the levy.

But Cllr Jacky Pembleton (C, Middleton)

said she was concerned an applicant could put forward plans for student rooms and change the accommodation afterwards when the council was unable to impose the levy.

"THis is a loophole and it may seem to be nit-picking but I can see some developers picking that nit," she said.

THe same potential flaw also existed in relation to rooms used for residential purposes in holiday site.

THe sub-committee agreed to ask its officers from more information when the levy proposals were debated at full council on July 17.

Kevin Owen, the council's planning policy team leader, said the levy would be imposed on all development over 100sq m floorspace with some exemptions such as self-build properties and social housing.

It would raise about £30m up to 2031. THe range of charges would vary in five zones created by the council's consultants to reflect the different property values north and south of the A259. THe council also had to show it did not deter development.

Cllr Martin Lury, Arun's cabinet member for planning, said: "We have to go ahead with this and the sooner the better.

He said the levy rates were 'a constant balancing act'. "If we set them too high, it prevents the landowners from selling to developers and puts us in possible trouble with our local plan. If we set them too low, we lose income."

An inspector will assess Arun's proposals when they are agreed by councillors. It is hoped the levy will take effect next spring.

A special interest weekend at midsummer at the Weald and Downland Living Museum offers talks and tours through its six historic gardens and displays to explore traditional ideas and uses around different herbs and plants. Plenty of emotion in Hare's epic play Theatre review 

It is portrayed on the stage incredibly through, grief, love, sadness, heartache, fear, uncertainty and anger.

David Hare's play was first staged in the 1970s and is a different take on conventional war films, with the main character, Susan Traherne, played by Rachael Stirling, struggling to return to civilian life after returning as a secret agent in the special operations executive (SOE) in Nazi-occupied France.

In post-war London, Susan marries a civil servant, Raymond Brock, whom she meets in Brussels, but he eventually tires of Susan's erratic behaviour, loose lips and state of mental health.

Rachael's performance stole the whole show and the audience looked in on shock and horror as her

frustrations with her marriage reached a crescendo and the stage was alive with the pain the characters felt.

Susan's friend, Alice, played by Yolanda Kettle, was an added bonus of humour and portrayal of living a bohemian lifestyle, later alarmed by Susan's subdued demeanour and change in character.

THe stage use was phenomenal with clever curtains

and cinematography to further feel Susan's torment over what has happened in her life.

It seems special that the play is performed in Chichester and at this time, not only because of the importance Tangmere played with the SOE but with the D-Day celebrations just passed and the uncertain times of Brexit.

Traditional afternoon tea

The two words 'afternoon tea' conjure up visions of sunny days, crisp white linen, elegant china and tiered stands loaded with sandwiches and sweet treats AFTERNOON tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in 1840. THe duchess would become hungry around 4pm as the evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner.

THe duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. THis became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.

THis pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880s upperclass and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

175g butter or margarine 175g caster sugar 3 eggs beaten 175g self-raising flour 3-4 tablespoons jam

Method 1. Grease the bases of two 18cm sandwich tins, line with greaseproof or baking paper. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy.

2. Add the eggs, a little at a time, beating well between each addition. Gently add half the flour using a metal spoon to combine with mixture then add remainder.

3. Divide mixture evenly between the tins, levelling the surfaces. Bake at 190C, mark 5, for 20 minutes until well risen, firm to touch and beginning to shrink from the sides of the tins.

4. Turn out and leave to cool on a wire rack. When cakes are cool, sandwich together with jam and sprinkle the top with sugar.

TO DESCRIBE THe Star and Garter as a pub with food is to do it a serious injustice.

THis traditional country inn, which is tucked away in the downland village of East Dean, north of Chichester, has undergone a renaissance since coming under the wing of Giles Babb, landlord of the popular Blue Bell at Emsworth.

Sheep bleating on the surrounding hillside was the only sound to disturb the peace of this typically rural setting of flint-faced cottages, village pond and a working red telephone box.

THe sheltered garden at the rear has been tidied up ready to welcome walkers in the summer as well as overspill diners from the single bar/ restaurant area with its rustic tables and pictures reflecting its nearness to Goodwood racecourse.

THe Star and Garter had been dark for a number of months prior to Giles taking it over but re-opened on March 1 with an emphasis on offering quality food at lunch and dinner, although returning to its place as the village local by maintaining its bar and space for drinkers to chat.

To show its credentials as a pub, Doom Bar beer is always available and a number of changing real ales - 20 different ones have been on offer in the first three months. Premium gin, the currentlyfashionable spirit of choice, has a menu all to itself, complete with tasting notes and descriptions of the origins of the various distillations, including Chichester Harbour's finest.

Wine has been selected by Alastair Gibson, of Hermitage Cellars in Emsworth, and each main course on the dinner menu lists bottles of a suitable accompanying wine. THere is also plenty of choice in the usual range of red, white and rose to buy by the glass and sparkling wine from the Wiston Estate.

THis emphasis on local sources is very much in evidence on the menu where everything is fresh and seasonal. Goodwood's Home Farm is only a few miles away and supplies lamb, milk and venison in season, crab is from Selsey and the excellent fish comes from Brighton.

Home-made does not just apply to the finished dishes. Head chef Josh Reeves, who has moved from Sidlesham's Crab and Lobster, not only smokes his own cheese and chalk stream trout and makes chutneys and condiments but forages on his days off for select ingredients, such as sea kale.

From the starters menu, my dining companion chose a home-smoked cheese, an unusual soft lemony labneh with crunchy vegetables, including beetroot and asparagus, providing a delightful

contrast of tastes and textures.

THe special of the day was a mackerel and avocado salad with apple, which I tried and found light and refreshing. Both it and the labneh were decorated with edible flowers, which seemed an appropriate touch in the middle of the countryside.

Having been recommended by the friendly and helpful staff, I was keen to try the Goodwood lamb and it certainly didn't disappoint. It was cooked to perfection with a hint of pink, tender and succulent, accompanied with soft yet crispy sweetbread, roasted baby beetroot, sea kale and a juniper-flavoured jus.

THe delicate flavoursome pan-fried cod served on the other side of the table flaked at the touch of a knife and was served in a delicate consomme which complemented it admirably with the last drops scooped in a soup spoon.

Trying to choose from the home-made desserts was almost impossible so the chef kindly provided a taste of each from the menu plus the special carrot and ginger cake with honeycomb and a whisky butterscotch sauce.

What can you say about a plate of four desserts, all expertly made, served with artistry and tasting sublimely sweet with subtle extra flavours? Don't just go by the descriptions, if you have any kind of interest in puddings, you must try them.

Four Sussex cheeses are a happy alternative for those who prefer a savoury finish to their meal.

THe dinner offering is worthy of a much higher class of establishment than a country pub and Giles - and Josh - deserve to attract new clientele from a wide area, as well as those familiar with THe Star and Garter from its previous landlords and Goodwood visitors.

Home: THis is no doubt the easiest place to control warmth and comfort. You can sit in your favourite chair, put music you like on (or sit in silence if you prefer) but how about the distraction factor? THe fridge is calling, you have a box set you haven’t finished on Netflix and the washing needs doing. It isn’t always easy to zone out at home and get into work mode.

Coffee Shop: THe walk to a coffee shop can get you into a different mind set ready to work. However, you can’t always guarantee the environment in a coffee shop. Will you

Coffee Shop: Good coffee goes without saying at a coffee shop, else it’s not a very good coffee shop! Add to that the selection of other beverages and snacks/treats it’s probably a strong player for this factor. One point to note of course is that you will have to pay for anything you consume and often you will have to purchase more than one item to avoid the guilt of using the space for a longer amount of time.

Coworking Space: A good coworking space will have good coffee, tea etc. Even better, it will be limitless and you can help yourself as much as you want. You may not be able to choose from as wide a range as you would in a coffee shop but if you aren’t a coffee person there is likely to be access to a range of tea, soft drinks and even alcohol should the temptation rise.

Welcome to the first of a regular, monthly, business feature for the Post This month a bit of background and introduction to me and why I think collaboration is key for business here in the city and what I’m doing to play my part.

By Debbie Ford The Chichester Social www.thechichestersocial.com So how did I come to be in Chichester and what qualifies me to write this column?

Well, it’s a story as old as time itself: • Girl meets boy • Girl starts working for the county council • Girls falls out of love with the boy (and the council), but stays in Chichester • Girl then joins a locally based web design and development company • Finally, girl decides to go it alone and start her own business in Chichester • THat covers the last 20 years, or as I call it, “My Chichester Life”.

As for qualifications to being here, in print?

Well, I’ll let you be the judge of that! When I started my own business over three years ago — I’m officially no longer a “start-up”, apparently — I missed having a team around me.

I was working at home on my own, finding myself down rabbit holes of “how to be a great freelance marketing consultant” and achieving, at times, very little output. THis wasn’t sustainable activity – bills wait for no (wo)man, as the old adage goes.

I knew that networking and finding a business community was the answer, but nowhere seemed to fit the bill; there was definitely a gap for a new approach. So I did what I do best, I asked others who are far more experienced in this area than me.

Chichester has approximately 15,000 people registered as self-employed - this is a19.8 per cent share of the overall "economically active" market. THe national average for self-employed status is 10.6 per cent - we are almost twice this.

Go Chichester! With this data to hand, my friend Emily (an HR consultant) and I agreed that a new business networking community that had a primary goal of supporting freelancers and solo entrepreneurs here in the city was absolutely needed.

My next question was, ‘How hard could it be to start a new business networking group?’

As it turns out, it’s very easy – the hard work followed later. But we needed it to have purpose.

We had both spent many years living, working and socialising in Chichester and wanted to support independent businesses (and the local economy) so we decided that we’d work with selected venues to host our morning meetups on the last Friday of the month.

THe good news was that they were more than willing to work with us and recognised the mutual benefit. THree years on, we’ve built up a network of over 300 members — it’s free to join — and we regularly get over 40 people attend each month.

We’ve seen some great collaborations: a brand strategist and singing coach is just one example. A crude calculation on the back of a matchbox suggests we have happily contributed somewhere in the region of £10k into the pockets of independent businesses.

What connects me, my networking group and these businesses is a willingness to collaborate and participate for the greater good. In a month where we’ve seen another couple of businesses close, it isn’t productive or helpful to lament their loss — which may be due to much more than “greedy landlords/throttling rates” —while not stepping over the threshold of the remaining businesses and offering your support. THe question is, If you are running a business here in the city and its surrounding area, ask yourself honestly: “Are we doing enough to market ourselves, collaborate and grow?”

THe future of the high street will not be dominated by big brands, it will be the independents that survive and thrive. Study after study confirms this trend. What independents bring to the table is the chance to connect with their customers in a way that makes everyone feel like they’re a part of something. We’re in it together.

THere are, of course, factors that make coming in to the city untenable, one of which is the cost of parking. However, a rant on social media clearly isn’t reaching the ears of the decision-makers. If you want to help the district and county councils understand the impact their parking strategies are having on the city’s economy, then you need to take your informed comments to them directly.

Whatever we do in business, collaboration and participation is key if you are genuinely up for making a change happen.

1 Butcher with a mission to change minds Butcher Gary Jordan is a man on a mission - to get people to change their buying, cooking and eating habits by going back to basics.

Gary, who has run the family business of Jordan’s at Rose Green Road since December 1997 and worked there for longer, said: “I feel a lot of today’s allergies and dietary problems come from what people eat.

“My mum would buy meat and cook it without additives or E-numbers. If you have good ingredients, you can’t go wrong.

I want people to start cooking their own food from scratch again rather than eating ready-meals.

“I know many people will say they are too busy or it’s too expensive to shop with a traditional butcher such as ourselves but, kilo for kilo, our prices are as good as the supermarkets,” added Gary.

For example, currently, the shop has an offer where, for £20, customers can choose seven out of nine items which will provide enough meat to cook all meals for a week.

Everything for sale is natural and fresh with supplies sourced as locally as possible but Jordans is not behind the times as it has the ability to take customers’ orders through its internet Facebook page and offers daily deliveries in its refrigerated van across the Bognor Regis area.

Jordans delivers to businesses, such as restaurants and nursing homes, while other advantages for customers are its prime position on Rose Green Road with free parking.

As well as meat, the shop sells fish, game in season, popular sausages made on the premises, pies, quiches and other delicatessen goods.

THe Bognor Regis Post has been publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness. THis is the final excerpt: Friday, May 17 - Sir Arthur du Cros, the owner of Craigweil House, Aldwick, has offered to present a stained-glass window to Pagham Church as a thank-offering for the King's convalesence and to commemorate the stay of the King and Queen in the parish.

In making the offer to the Rev G.G. Knox, the Vicar of Pagham, he wrote: "I think I may be right in suggesting that your parishioners would all wish to see some permanent record set up in thanksgiving for the recovery of his Majesty the King, and to commemorate the honour conferred upon our parish by the residence there of their Majesties the King and Queen.

"Should you share this opinion, and the ecclesiastical authories approve, I shall be glad to give effect to it by presenting the stained glass required to fill the beautiful rose window of Pagham Church, together with a suitably inscribed plate recording the happy events which it is desired to commemorate."

THe Queen has sent a letter to the Vicar, saying: "Her Majesty was much interested to hear that the rose window is to be filled with stained glass.

"It will be a very delightful memorial of their Majesties' stay at Bognor, and a most attractive addition to your old and historically interesting church."

THe rose window was placed in the church about 1837, and is a copy of one in Palermo. *May's meeting of Bognor Urban District Council saw its members decide to ask the King for formal recognition of his stay.

It was reported at the next meeting this had been granted but it was July before the formal addition of Regis took effect.

FORMER sailor Ron Hargest has been presented with a reminder of his early days in the senior service.

Rose Green resident Ron, 76, was handed a certificate in recognition of the 60 years which had passed since he joined HMS Ganges. THe boys' training establishment near Ipswich housed 2,000 boys between 15 and 16 until they were old enough to go to sea.

Ron said he enjoyed his time at HMS Ganges and belongs to the association set up after its closure in 1976.

He received his certificate from its president, Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, at its latest reunion in Lowestoft, pictured above.

Among Ron's most memorable moments at HMS Ganges was the mast manning display for parents day. "In my particular year, I was in the display team and was the boy in the middle on the upper yardarm 131 feet above the ground. We had no safety harnesses and had to clear the mast in a matter of minutes," he said.

Ron spent 12 years in the Royal Navy and left as a leading engineering mechanic, engineer's writer. He moved to IBM in Havant and retired from the company in 1992.

He moved to Rose Green with his wife in 2008, joined the Bognor Regis branch of the Royal Naval Association the next year and is its chairman and secretary. His membership of the association dates back to the mid-70s.

A TENTH Armed Forces Day is being held in Bognor Regis tomorrow.

THe annual celebration of Britain's armed forces past, present and future, pictured above in 2018, is taking place on the seafront.

It provides residents with the chance to honour the work the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force carry out for the country.

A spokesman for the organising committee said: "THis being the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6 just adds to the special significance of the day.

"THere will be something for everyone so join us and let's celebrate our Armed Forces Day." A packed programme is in store for those who go along.

THis will feature THe Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment as well as the Bognor Regis Sea Cadets and 461 Squadron Air Cadets.

A CONSULTATION is underway about the future of three play areas around Bognor Regis.

TALENTED Felpham cabinet maker Owen Aldous will be representing the UK at an international event this year.

Owen, 20, has been selected for the national team at the Skills Olympics in Kazan in Russia this August.

He was picked as a member of Team UK after he excelled in the WorldSkills UK National Finals.

In the cabinet maker category of the Skills Olympics, the contestants will be given timber and equipment and told what to build just one hour before the start.

THey have 22 hours over four days to complete the project.

Owen's talents have been praised by Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb, pictured below.

He said:" It was a privilege to meet Owen, whose commitment and energy to developing and perfecting his expertise in building beautiful cabinets is truly impressive.

"His drive will undoubtedly secure him a rewarding and fulfilling career.

"I am sure we all wish Owen every success at the Skills Olympics in Kazan this summer and hope he returns with a coveted gold medal."

THe Skills Olympics will take place from August 22-27. Teams of young people, from more than 60 countries, including those in the 34 skills in Team UK, will compete for the right to be named the most skilled nation in the world in each of the 50 skills categories.

Owen is a former pupil of Felpham Community College and moved on to Chichester College.

His tutor there was Christian Notley, who has gained a WorldSkills gold medal and received his MBE for services to skills education.

Owen spent three years at the college developing his expertise.

He works full-time for Chichester firm Callow & Co, fitting quality kitchens. He fits his hours and hours of training into his evenings and weekends around his employment.

SMALL steps to ensure air quality is improved for everyone have been outlined by West Sussex County Council.

It is asking residents to make positive changes to their lifestyles to enable people to breathe easier where they live and work.

THese include walking and cycling for short journeys, gently braking and accelerating smoothly when driving, considering switching to electric vehicles and composting organic waste instead of burning it.

THe county council says it is committed to improving air quality as a long-standing member of the Sussex-air Partnership, which offers a free airAlert service.

THis sends messages - either by text, voice mail or email - when air pollution levels in a specified area increase to a moderate rating or above.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, cabinet member for environment at the county council, said: "It is often difficult to appreciate the importance of air quality as it can't be seen.

"THrough the choices we make about how we travel and how we heat our homes, we can all make a positive difference to improving the air quality in our county.

"Walking and cycling on short journeys will cut pollution, and there is the added bonus of getting exercise which is good for your physical and mental health.

"Improving air quality is a priority for the county council - but we can't do it without the help of our residents."

THe county council has highlighted its advice as part of national breathe easy week.

THe initiative includes this year's clean air day, which was held yesterday.

Earlier this month, the county council launched its West Sussex Climate Pledge online campaign.

It asks West Sussex residents to make small but positive changes to their everyday lives and can be seen at: westsussex.gov.uk/ maketheclimatepledge

In people who have already had heart attacks, omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of sudden death.

Omega-3 fatty acids don't affect LDL cholesterol levels. But because of those acids' other heart benefits, it's recommended that eating at least two servings of fish a week cold make a significant difference. Baking or grilling the fish avoids adding unhealthy fats.

Town contains plenty of sites of former pubs Many premises had their licences ended or were demolished I HAVE remarked in previous months that, for many people, a public house or inn is often used as a method of providing directions to the pedestrian or motorist, which can prove difficult when these premises change their names.

However, what about those premises that have either changed their use or just vanished from our view? How many can you remember?

Looking at our High Street for changes, one major change was that of the York Inn, which was situated on the site which in 1984 became THe Body Shop and is now Cubit and West.

Originally built in 1830 as a ‘Post House,’ in 1839 it was described as a wine cellar and owned by James Smith, owner of York House, which was situated next door.

It then became a public house and was decorated in glazed green tiles in the style of Brickwoods Brewery, many of which have survived the changes to its present use.

THere were, though, other public houses that have completely vanished from our town many years ago, and which will be remembered by only a few.

THere was THe Anchor, which was situated at No 48 High Street and was privately owned as a small beer house from 1877. Here again, the licence was not renewed from 1907 and the building became occupied by an estate agent until it was demolished in 1974 to make way

for the new shops.

Another historical building was that of the Gordon Arms, which was built about 1790 and was used as the town’s first post office.

In 1840, it was purchased and opened as an ale house. However, the licence ceased about 1880 when it became a private residence known as Derby House. It was situated on the corner of the High Street and Lyon Street and joined on to Valhalla. Derby House was demolished in 1939 with the widening of Lyon Street.

Other premises have existed in some of our smaller side streets. Let us look at the Coach and Horses in Bedford Street. THe land was formerly owned by Sir Richard Hotham but was purchased in 1820 by James Tomsett from South Bersted who constructed the building.

It continued as a public house until 1979 when it closed to make way for the many changes that were planned in the vicinity.

However, it wasn’t demolished until 1996 and today this site is occupied by two small warehouses which face the back of New Look, while overlooking the car park of Morrisons.

Another site that was hidden away was THe Crown, situated in Manor Place behind the Royal Hotel. Some reports claim this was one of the oldest in the town, while others shown in this article show the facts to be different.

the Bersted family of Tomsett and it is believed that it was the haunt of sailors and smugglers.

Before the First World War, it was used by the Coach and Horses Club, which consisted of a group of gentlemen who met socially.

While it closed for a couple of years at the end of the 1970s, it reopened and continued for a number of years. It finally closed and was renovated and transformed into flatlets.

THe Tomsett family owned yet another premise, that of the Elephant and Castle in Steyne Street. THis was opened in the 1850s and continued until 1970 when it was closed before demolition as part of the major clearance in that area as it became built up with flats and the current health centre.

Another pub in Steyne Street that was lost with this land clearance of the 1970s was the King’s Head. THis building dated from the 1830s and was described as a ‘brewery and tap yard'.

It is recorded that, during its heyday, strolling entertainers would chain up their dancing bears in the yard of the King’s Head. Like so many premises, the licence was not renewed in 1907 and the building was put into private use until its final demise in 1970. THis area of the town at one time boasted three public houses, and today only THe Lamb remains.

If we travelled from Chichester Road along Victoria Drive to Aldwick, we could at one time have stopped at the Victoria Hotel, which was situated on the junction with Aldwick Road.

THe earliest records of this hotel date from 1870. THe local architect, Arthur Smith, constructed the hotel when many other developments were taking place in the vicinity. It was finally closed in 1990 and

demolished to make way for the current block of flats.

Another site we should look at was once called the Queen Victoria and situated in South Bersted. On one of the walls there used to be a tablet dated 1792 with the initials B.N.S. By 1842, it was known as a beer and lodging house and owned by one of the brewers from Chichester, and for a time it was named THe White Horse. THe name was changed around 1860s but eventually, due to legislation and other local changes, it ceased to be a public house and became a private resident in 1978.

Looking further afield, we should consider THe Southdowns in Felpham. At one time on this corner site of the main road, the weary traveller could have visited the Brewers Arms, which was said to have dated from the 18th century.

However, these premises were closed and demolished to make way for a new construction next door, that of the Southdowns in 1923. It was considered that a more modern public house was needed at this ‘end of the village'.

Looking around the town, we find that there would appear to have been a period when a number of licensed premises opened, in particular there seemed to be quite a surge of new premises in the 1830s. THen, for whatever reasons, the use of many declined prior to the First World War, when their licences were not renewed.

THis is just a snapshot of some of our past drinking houses. It is interesting to surmise how many of today’s public houses will have a tale or history to be recounted by future local historians?

Ten Pin Bowling BOGNOR bowler Harley Guy-Sinclair skittled his opponents over to lift a league title against some of the best competitors in Sussex- at the tender age of ten.

THe youngster teamed up with his step father, Jeff Campbell, as the aptly named doubles team Big and Small.

After a 33-week battle for top spot in the ten pin bowling Tuesday night adult league at Worthing, the duo saw off their rival players to take first place in the standings.

Harley, who is the youngest in the adult league at the tender age of just 10 years old, stormed in to the final where he bowled a high score of 190, impressing his peers and onlookers at the bowling alley.

Jeff, who has coached Harley since he was four years old, jumped at the chance of pairing up with his step son when the adult league started up at Worthing last year.

Wife and mother Natasha GuyCampbell said: "I'm so thrilled for my boys to achieve this victory together, I am so proud of them both.

"We were all in shock when we found out they had actually won first place."

Glorious countdown is underway SEVEN down, 12 to go - the Goodwood horse racing programme is well and truly up and running with preparations well underway for the track to host its world-famous glorious event.

In just over a month's time, the great and the good from the world of horse racing will head to the South Downs for the annual Qatar festival.

Over five days, tens of thousands of people will watch the best equine athletes in the world go nose to nose in one of the highlights of the flat racing season.

It all kicks off on Tuesday, July 30, with the highlight of the first day a new Group One race, the Qatar Goodwood Cup, worth ÂŁ500,000.

THe ÂŁ1million Qatar Sussex Stakes is the feature event of Wednesday before the Magnolia Cup takes centre stage for Ladies Day. Friday features four group races including the ÂŁ300,000 King George sprint before it is all wrapped up on the Saturday, culminating in the Stewards Cup. One horse who is set to return is Battash, who will be looking to make it three King

George victories in a row.

THe Charlie Hills horse came up just short at Royal Ascot this week, losing out by a length and a half to old rival Blue Point in the King's Stand Stakes.

But back on the hallowed Sussex turf, the Jim Crowley mount is expected to head into the Group Two King George as a firm favourite to repeat his 56 second blitz in the five furlong sprint.

Speaking after the Ascot race, Hills said: "We just got a little bit detached from the race and he had to make his move a little early, but he ran a really good race.

"THe race worked out how we envisaged it. We will go to Goodwood now for the King George."

Before then, racegoers will get a taste of the final THree Friday Night event of the year tonight (Friday), which sees an afternoon of horse racing, followed by an evening of worldclass DJs and an epic Parade Ring dance floor lit with lasers.

THe final event will feature south London house-techno outfit Disciples.

Bognor and Chi are ready for derby day BOGNOR CC will have to overcome a familiar foe if they want to keep their promotion push on track as they head to Chichester Priory Park tomorrow (12.30pm).

THe Division Two rivals are experiencing very different seasons with one fighting it out at the top while the other are hovering just above the dropzone.

Bognor, who are currently fourth, will head to Goodwood in good spirits after winning three of their last four matches.

A win is badly needed though to keep pace with the top two after rain put paid to their hopes when they were in a strong position against leaders Billingshurst.

After winning the toss and choosing to field at the Regis Oval, the home side put the visitors into bat.

THey made a solid start as openers Jordan Willoughby (82) and Louis Storey (7) put on 47 for the first wicket.

But Josh Sargeant (2-33) and Zimbabwean spinner Roy Kaia bowled well in tandem, with the overseas star eventually finishing with figures of six for 79.

After a late rally and with rain clouds hovering, Billingshurst declared on a score

of 184 for eight, which would have been a reachable target if not for the weather.

In reply, Bognor skipper Ryan Maskell lasted just two balls before departing for a duck.

Mikey Harris (25*) and Kaia (12*) made some inroads into the score, reaching 56 for two before the match was abandoned due to the weather.

Up the road at Goodwood and Priory's poor start to the season continued last weekend as the club suffered an eight wicket loss to second-place St James's Montefiore.

In what turned out to be a 20 over match, Chi struggled to get going, with only Simon Hasted (48* from 39 balls)showing some resistance against a strong visiting attack.

Priory eventually reached a score of 110 for seven off their allotted overs, a score which looked unlikely to prove enough.

Chi struggled to make inroads early on as St James's openers Harry Rollings (27) and Hector Loughton (55) put on 64 for the opening wicket before wrapping up the win with eight wickets and three overs to spare.

If there was a bright spot, it was that Abhi Raut (0-14) and Joe De La Fuente (1-15) proved economical in their four overs.

Roffey next up for Middleton MIDDLETON CC will be searching for their first win in five as they head to title challenging Roffey tomorrow (11.30am) in the Sussex Premier Division.

Sean Heather's side have struggled after an excellent start to the campaign, with a run of three losses seeing them sitting fifth in the ten team standings.

Middleton's blushes were spared last weekend when the rain came to their aid against Cuckfield with the visitors in firm control of the match.

THey will need to be much better tomorrow when they head to the outskirts of Horsham to face a Roffey side who are unbeaten in their last five.

Middleton's first focus will be on improving on a poor bowling display against Cuckfield which saw the visitors reach 278 for six after batting first at the Sports Ground.

THe star performer was opener Harry Nielson (128) who hit an imperious century before being dismissed by Heather.

It was one of three wickets for the Middleton skipper (3-50)

who was the stand-out performer for the home side.

In reply, they never really got going, falling to 66-4 before the weather came to their rescue.

Heather (26) was the top scorer in what was a day to forget for Middleton.

In Division THree West, Pagham will be looking to get their season back on track after a run of three defeats in four left them hanging on just in the hunt for promotion.

Stuart Hanks' side, who are sitting fourth in the competitive division, seven points off top spot, welcome Findon to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (12.30pm).

THey will be looking to make a vast improvement on last weekend when they were well and truly second best to thirdbottom Ansty.

After batting first, Pagham were bowled out for just 57 in only 19 overs as Jake Wilson (7-17) terrorised the home line-up.

Only Nick Smith (28) reached double figures for Pagham.

In reply, Ansty knocked off the total with the loss of just one wicket.

Pagham hunt for a new boss

Pearce delight as Tuck signs BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has said he is delighted to have secured the services of midfield talisman Doug Tuck for another season.

THe playmaker is much coveted in non-league circles for his ability to keep the ball and launch attacks from deep.

Despite an injury-plagued season last year, Tuck has agreed to commit for another season at Nyewood Lane.

His main task will be to help the Rocks perform better than the 14th place finish in the Bostik Premier division next season and he could be joined in the middle of the park by former Bognor schemer Stuart Green.

Pearce confirmed that he is hoping to strike a deal with AFC Totton for the goalscoring midfielder.

He said: "I think it says a lot about Doug as a person and his feelings for the club that he has agreed to stay with us and we're really very pleased this is the case. We know all about Stuart

from his time with us before and we should be able to confirm this news sooner rather than later."

Long-serving midfielder Tuck, who notched up his 300th appearance last season, came on as sub to notch the winner as Bognor lifted the Sussex Senior Cup in May. Now he has committed to pen a new deal giving boss Jack Pearce and first team coach Robbie Blake more good news on the signings front.

James Crane has already switched back to the Rocks from Worthing and Ashton Leigh has made the permanent switch from Baffins Milton Rovers.

Meanwhile, positive dialogue continues between Pearce and striker Jimmy Muitt, utility man and skipper Harvey Whyte and midfielder Freddie Read.

Other players set to sign are ex-Pagham midfielder Lloyd Rowlatt, right-back Josh McCormack, midfielder Emmett Dunn, and central defenders Keaton Wood and Chad Field.

PAGHAM hope to announce a new manager in a matter of weeks after the shock departure of manager Tom Simmonds.

After starting last season with two managers, the Nyetimber Lane side have been left without one.

First, Ritchie Hellen departed with weeks of the SCFL Premier season to run. Now the well thought of Simmonds has announced he, too, will leave, citing personal reasons.

Pagham officials said the search for a replacement was underway, with applications for the post closing earlier this week.

It is expected a new manager will be confirmed within the fortnight as the club look to bounce back from a disappointing end to the last campaign.

After starting the season with promotion hopes, the club ended the campaign in 11th.

In a statement, the club said: "THe chairman and his

committee would like to put on record how truly grateful they are for Tom’s commitment over the past five years. We would like to recognise what a magnificent job he has done during his time at the club.

"From winning Under-18 league titles two seasons on the trot and being cup winners in the same seasons, to winning the double at Under-21 level, then taking on the first team joint manager role with Ritchie Hellen, guiding the team to finish third in the Premier League, RUR Cup finalists and Sussex Senior Cup semi-finalists in the same season.

"His dedication over the last five years speaks volumes about the man and we will miss him at Nyetimber Lane.

"We wish Tom all the best for the future."

Stephens leaves City Ladies NEW Chichester City Ladies manager Sadie Blakeley has suffered a blow with the news of the departure of another key player from last season's history-making squad.

THe former goalkeeper took up the reins at Oaklands Park last month after the club finished third in the third tier of women’s football.

Within weeks, both club captain Lauren Cheshire and striker Cherelle Khassal announced their departures.

THis has been followed by influential midfielder Tash Stephens, who announced she will also be leaving the club.

Stephens said: "I’m grateful to have been able to play alongside some amazing people, learn so much and create so many memories.

"However, it's time for me to move on and find a new challenge for next season."

Blakeley started the rebuilding process this week as the club hosted open trials at Chichester College.

With the emphasis on youth and bringing players through the ranks, the former goalkeeper is expected to turn to youth ahead of the National Southern Premier campaign kicking off in a few weeks' time.

-Sidlesham FC has confirmed its preseason schedule ahead of the new campaign.

THe SCFL Division One side will start their preparations with a match at home against local rivals Bosham on July 6 (3pm).

THat will be followed by ties against East

Preston (July 9, 7.45pm), Epsom & Ewell (July 13, 3pm) and Fareham Town (July 16, 7.45pm).

Matches against Nyetimber Pirates (July 20, 3pm) and Littlehampton Town (July 27, 3pm) are also planned. All games will be played at the Memorial Ground.

Smashing time as coach visits vibrant squash club YOUNG Bognor squash players got a chance to boost their skills when a world renowned coach paid a visit to their club.

Inspirational Sussex head coach Graham Stevenson was invited to take a session at Bognor Squash Club, in Hawthorn Road, by club coach ZoĂŤ Shardlow as part of the Sussex development scheme.

For Stevenson, it was a return trip to the club and he found plenty had changed.

His advice then had been to recruit a pro-active coach and he was pleased to see they had done exactly that - with Shardlow boosting junior participation numbers from two to over 20, as well as running successful team training sessions and launching new club squash titles for junior squash and women's racketball.

Stevenson said: "Zoe's enthusiasm and know-how have transformed things and I was delighted to work with her and a lovely group of youngsters, keen to improve their skills. THe only anxiety was whether we might have too many players on the day, or consume too much homemade cake!

"As senior Sussex coach, I am reassured to see a club where there is so much junior activity, and a programme to meet the needs of all young players, from complete beginner, to national squad standard, so ‘Well done ZoÍ’, and long may it last."

Looking forward, Stevenson was optimistic, and encouraged Shardlow to continue seeking involvement with local schools.

He said: "If the planned liaisons with local schools come to fruition, then the future looks bright at Bognor, and Sussex can only benefit from this talent pathway."

All the young players had a great time and a cake sale raised over ÂŁ20 for junior funds.

ZoĂŤ currently runs junior sessions on Mondays, THursdays and Sundays and day camps during all holidays (Year 4 and above).

SquashGirlsCan squash and racketball is on THursday evenings and one-to-one sessions can be arranged at a time to suit you.

Running SCORES of runners took to the countryside for the first ever Centurion County Five.

Organised by Chichester Runners, the five mile offroad out and back course saw competitors start and end at Lavant Village Green after taking in a stretch of the Centurion Way. Suitable for all abilities from age 15, the event on Wednesday proved a popular replacement for the Midsummer 5.

As well as cash prizes for the winners, everyone taking part tucked into a burger and a drink at the finish line.

A number of Chichester Runners warmed up for the event by taking part in the Hayling Billy 5 last week.

A total of 295 runners lined up in wet conditions for the annual race along the old railway track.

Ben Ritchie (20th – 32.52) led the club home followed by Helen Dean (48th & 1st V60 – 36.28), David Knowles (50th – 36.36), Vikki Balandis (62nd – 37.56), and Kevin Williams (72nd – 38.37).
