Food store plans put on hold FEARS about flooding caused councillors to defer plans for a Aldi store in Bognor Regis. THe impact of the £34m Salt Box Field development on the area’s high water table saw the proposals put off for at least a month. THe discount retailer would be one of the occupiers of the 12-hectare site, west of the A29 Shripney Road and north of Rowan Way. THe others would include Warburtons

the bakers and Richmond Motor Group. Between 500 and 1,000 jobs will be created when all the units – also including two drive-through restaurants and two warehouses - are occupied. THe developer, Landlink Estates, is eager to get started. But Arun District Council’s development control committee agreed by 7-5 votes, with one abstention, to demand more details about the proposed drainage system.

Council group head of planning Neil Crowther said: “I would hope we could bring it (the application) back to the next meeting but I can’t promise that would happen.” THe latest ideas had only been received by the council a few hours before Wednesday’s meeting. Planning officer Michael Eastham recommended approval of the scheme subject to the system being approved by the council’s

engineers after detailed scrutiny. But Cllr Martin Lury (LD, Bersted) said: “We should not be made to feel guilty because someone wants to start tomorrow. THis should be put right. “We have insufficient information about how the drainage issue can be resolved. We've had some last minute stuff that has been put in front of us. "I don't see a solution at the moment to See page five
