Resort director Jeremy Pardey has started work on designs for the site of the former swimming pool. This occupies a prime location next to the Gloucester Road car parks.

It has been replaced by the £40m Splash swimming pool, pictured above. The new facility's official launch took place on

Wednesday. Mr Pardey is already looking ahead to the next big improvement.

"We have to bring Bognor Regis seafront alive. I hope Bourne Leisure (Butlin's parent company) will support me to do that," he said.

"We have to remove our old swimming pool within 18 months. That will clear a big plot on the seafront.

"It could be an exciting thing to go in there. I want to make that a prominent

"It is a real opportunity to create a feature which is hugely exciting."

Mr Pardey's comments came as he conducted guided tours of Splash.

attractions. It has proved a hit since it began to open to guests last month.

"We have been using it for the last 10-12 days," he said, "and we had 5,000 guests using it on one day alone. A total of 65,000 people have been through so far."

Home celebrates its 10th birthday RESIDENTS and staff joined together to mark a Yapton home's first ten years.

The celebrations were a fitting way to end the first decade of the present Warmere Court.

The afternoon tea and party last Thursday looked back to the home's opening in 2009 and paid tribute to the work of its employees.

Home manager Mary Latter has worked at Warmere Court for 25 years. She said: "I just love the place. I love the residents and I like the people I work with.

"A lot of staff have been here for many years.

"This home is much better than the old one. It's airy, it's light and has all the amenities that you could want. You couldn't wish for a better environment."

She and support worker Mary Latter, who has also spent 25 years at the home, were formally thanked for their dedication.

Warmere Court, which is run by Shaw Healthcare, has 40 residents in 209 nursing beds and 20 elderly frail beds.

Shaw Healthcare chairman, Alun Thomas, said: "I was chairman at the time this was opened and the ten years have gone very quickly.

"We have 58 services of care and Warmere Court is about the average size.

"It has all en-suite facilities, which is very important, and this is a good home as the Care Quality Commission has said, and that is something to be proud of.

"It's been very successful and it's in high demand. Most of the accommodation is under contract with the local authority

and we provide the service for them."

Shaw Healthcare had £100m annual turnover and was in a strong financial position, said Mr Thomas. But the social care sector generally was under strain.

"It's obviously important to pay people the living wage but that money has got to be funded somehow.

"We have been very fortunate here but a lot of smaller homes have closed and that creates more pressure on the system," he said.

The current Warmere Court is the second home of the name in Downview Way. The first was demolished about 12 years ago and present building was constructed on its site.

One of the residents who joined in the celebration was Susan Birch, 67. She has lived in Warmere Court for eight years after moving from Westergate.

"I was worried about coming into full time care but I couldn't live safely at home any more," she said.

"I do now class Warmere Court as my home. The staff are pleasant and caring and I feel totally at home.

"I love the support and visits I get from my family and that they feel welcome here.

"I like that I can be as independent as I can be but that I know there are people to help me should I need it."

Two of the beds at Warmere Court are privately funded. The rest are paid for by the county council. It has 56 staff, including four nurses.

Also included in the building is a nineplace day centre.

Election hopeful hits out after campaiging signs are removed INDEPENDENT election candidate Steve Goodheart has criticised those who have taken down some of his campaigning signs.

Mr Goodheart stood in two elections yesterday in Hotham ward around the town centre.

He asked voters to re-elect him to Bognor Regis Town Council after his initial four-year term as a member.

He was also seeking to become an Arun district councillor for the first time. But he said earlier this week that ten of his distinctive black and white signs had been removed in the preceding days.

"It must be a very petty-minded person who's concerned that I might get noticed and possibly get voted for," he said. "As an Independent candidate without a party behind me, I used local connections who support me, to help to promote my campaign by getting permission to erect boards on their premises.

"It might be that it annoyed someone as I have just noticed that some of these sign boards have been taken down from all around the Hotham ward."

The town's Salvation Army church has launched a new open house session from 10am-midday on Wednesdays.

The first event last week saw some 50 people go along to the Canada Grove building.

Salvation Army Major Alexandra Hughes took her labrador, Evie, as an icebreaker. Eve is a Pets as Therapy dog and lapped up all the attention.

Alexandra said: "Evie is very well known in the community. She breaks down barriers and she loves the attention."

One of the captains, who are in charge of the church, Matt Butler, said he was pleased with the initial turnout.

"We used to hold a club called Cameo for a specific age group. But its frequency

dropped from weekly to fortnightly and then monthly. We thought we would bring it back in a different guise.

"We used to run the church in Glasgow, which is open every day with its cafe and we wanted that sense of community here.

"We are opening the doors. There are no restrictions. Anybody can come here.

"By having it weekly, people don't have to think about when the event is on.

"We've had a great range of people here today. There are people who worship with us, some who used to come to Cameo and others who have never been here before."

The first event took place in the church's hall but the venue can be extended into the place of worship if enough people go along.

One of those who helped to make the first week a success was Bognor Regis resident Sam Bottwood.

She said: "The sense of community here is good and the fact that people can have had a good chat. It's also good that anyone can come along.

"It's so important that people can see others and be able to talk to them.

"I am a carer and I see a lot of people on their own. I always encourage them to get out.

"When people are stuck indoors, they go downhill. Going out and about with people boosts them up." *Major Hughes took along the selfportrait by Canadian schoolgirl Cathlyn Aplaite. She has been hosting the drawing of the girl, aged about seven, since she sent it around the world from her home in Quebec.

The drawing will be returned to Cathlyn next week after Major Hughes has taken her to the beach and West Dean Gardens.

EDUCATION watchdogs have praised Felpham Community College.

Ofsted inspector Anne Turner said the college's work again deserved a 'Good' rating.

This kept the rating awarded to the college in January, 2016, and is the best standard it has achieved.

Head teacher Mark Anstiss said: "I am delighted Ofsted has kept our 'Good' rating. Clearly, Ofsted is important to parents in terms of making decisions about their children's education.

"It was important we maintained the status we achieved four years ago.

It was the first time the school had ever been judged as 'Good' since it opened in 1974."

But he said he was particularly pleased Ms Turner had highlighted the overall efforts to provide a rounded education to the college's 1,320 students.

"We are not just an exam factory.

"We believe in developing the children holistically and providing pastoral care and safeguards.

"It is about having a broad and balanced curriculum for all our students. It is satisfying that has been recognised," he said.

Ofsted's verdict was also pleasing in light of the funding and staffing problems which education providers faced in the county.

He said: "The funding for education is particularly bad in West Sussex. It is one of the lowest amounts among local authorities.

"That is coupled with the fact that not enough people are coming into the profession. We are lucky here that qualified teachers want to come here.

We will be fully staffed this September."

Ms Turner was one of three inspectors who visited the college on March 26.

In her report published last week, she said Mr Anstiss and his staff were determined to provide high quality education for all their pupils. The students, in turn, behaved well and enjoyed school. There was a calm and purposeful atmosphere at all times.

"Leaders monitor the quality of teaching carefully and check how well it contributes to strong progress," she said.

"You, together with senior leaders and governors, have an accurate view of the many strengths of the school and where improvement is possible."

She gave three areas of improvement - ensuring pupils' achievement in geography and history continues to improve, students' achievement in the sixth form improves and pupils' attendance is maintained."

Sixth former Owen Mawbey, 17, said: "I like the atmosphere at the college.

The teachers strive to help your studies.

"The college has definitely improved quite a bit since I first came here."

Tallulah Powell, 12, said: "All the teachers are very kind and do care about you and your education.

"You know you are in a school that does care about you and your opportunities."

` Concert for family SINGERS are joining together in Felpham to help a family affected by a fire.

Downview Primary School choir of some 120 children will join the choirs of St Mary's Church for the concert on May 10.

They will be joined by musician and accordion player Peter French for the performance from 5pm6.30pm at the church to raise money for Ginne Harper, Jason Gibbons and their family.

Their Mornington Crescent home was destroyed by a blaze in March.

The Rev John Challis, the church's vicar, said those involved wanted to help the family to get back on their feet.

Pair are jailed for knife attack A YAPTON man who helped to rob a schoolboy - threatening to stab him has been jailed.

Kai Dore, 18, unemployed, of Foundry Road, below, was sentenced to a total of 14 months' detention in a young offender institution for his part in the crime.

His sentence was imposed at Lewes Crown Court last Wednesday and comprised 14 months for robbery and six months for possession of a bladed article in public, to run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge.

His fellow robber - Miguel Mendez, 22, unemployed, of Stane Street, Dorking - was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for robbery and ordered to pay a £140 victim surcharge.

Detective Constable Louise Clark said: "Dore and Mendes used threats of violence to intimidate a young boy who was simply walking home from school and minding his own business.

"The sentences imposed reflect the seriousness of the crime they committed, and I hope it sends a message to others that knife crime will not be tolerated in Sussex, or anywhere else in the UK." The victim was aged 13 at the time and had been walking along Tarrant Street, Arundel, on the afternoon of March 15 last year when he was approached by two unknown men.

They wore balaclavas and demanded he hand over his iPhone and iPod Shuffle and warned: 'Don't be stupid or you'll get stabbed'.

In fear of being injured, the teenager, who is now aged 14, handed over his iPod. But the incident was witnessed by three

members of the public who intervened and got it back.

Two of the witnesses followed the suspects and saw one of them throw an object into bushes. They continued to follow them until they were arrested by police nearby. Police officers carried out a search and discovered the discarded item, which was a large kitchen knife, almost 20cm in length.

The suspects were identified as Mendes and Dore. Both men were interviewed and charged, and initially denied having any involvement in the robbery.

They changed their pleas to guilty as they were about to stand trial.

The court approved an order for a £300 reward to be paid to each witness.

DC Clark added: “I’d like to commend the bravery of the three members of the public who intervened and confronted the offenders, and reported the incident to police. They were key witnesses in bringing these two criminals to justice.

“However, we would encourage anyone not to compromise their own safety – if in doubt, call 999 immediately.”

Butlin's pool makes waves From page one than the previous pool from 1987.

Talks about investing in Splash on the eastern side of Butlin's began five years ago. Building work on the high tech complex started in 2017.

It has taken more than 2m tiles, 250,000 man hours and nearly 600,000 litres of water. A team of 74 lifeguards - 19 more than before - ensure people's safety.

The complex also boasts unique rides and fairground-themed rides and interiors, such as the helter skelter, as well as a wave pool, an adrenaline slide, a family raft ride, two flumes, a wave pool, a lido and a special area for toddlers.

Among these are changing facilities designed with the help of users of the Mumsnet website.

"We have a third more cubicles, a third more showers and cubicles of varying sizes depending on whether there are two swimmers, a family of three or four or a larger group.

"We wanted to ensure those who came into the pool enjoyed the beginning and

The pool ensured Butlin's presence in Bognor Regis for at least the next 30 years.

Bourne Leisure managing director Jon Hendry-Pickup said: "This is the biggest single investment we have made in any of our Butlin's resorts.

"I believe it is the biggest single coastal investment in the UK this year.

"Butlin's is so much more than you expect. We are really proud of what we deliver. We are living up to Sir Billy Butlin's pioneering and risk-taking.

"We take a long-term view of our businesses and this pool is a big part of that approach."

Among guests at the official opening was Sir Billy's daughter, Jacquie Butlin.

She said: "The pool looks amazing. They are really on-trend with it.

Hospital's new benches PATIENTS and visitors to the Bognor Regis Hospital have more chances to enjoy its grounds.

Two benches have been installed at the war memorial hospital thanks to the generosity of its supporters.

The hospital's Friends charity bought the seats for ÂŁ426.56 each. One is in memory of well-known personality Erik Jack.

The other has been bought with the regular donations from Bognor Regis Ladies Summer Darts League.

Both benches were blessed by the hospital's chaplain, the Rev Graham Reeves, in a short ceremony last Thursday.

The bench to honour the help Mr Jack gave to the Friends has the plaque: 'In Memory of Erik Jack "Mr Bognor". He served the Hospital "Friends" for many years'.

Mr Jack, who died in September, 2017, was the compere at the Friends' annual fete for decades.

Mr Jack's wife, Melanie Harris, said: "The bench is a lovely memory of Erik, it really is. It is a nice way of keeping his memory alive.

"Anything that happened in Bognor, Erik was always willing to give his time for the town. He really loved Bognor."

The darts league's chairman, Angie Roberts, said: "Most of the pubs who play in the league are Bognor Regis pubs.

"Every year we donate to the Friends. They are a good cause. Local people use the hospital and our donations are helping everyone in the town.

"We have donated for 20 years and we thought it would be nice to have a plaque to say we have contributed to help the hospital.

"The bench is lovely. It's in a lovely area and you can see a lot that is going on."

The benches are sited either side of the path outside the outpatients department of the Shripney Road hospital. They are made from recycled plastic.

A 558-space decked car park was built with the pool. The development has replaced 1,005 bed spaces in staff and guest chalets.

` Hotel plan backed A PROPOSAL to convert a Bognor Regis seafront hotel into flats and a restaurant has been approved.

The scheme will see 27 flats created in The Royal Hotel and its former club become a restaurant over two floors.

Arun District Council planning officer Simon Davis said in his report the scheme would provide a boost to the town.

This was enough to overcome the planning reasons for refusal such as the loss of tourist accommodation and the lack of evidence to justify the proposal against this policy.

But the loss of the hotel had been accepted by a previous planning application in 2015 and the approval in 2017 of a scheme to convert the whole building to flats.

He said: "In addition, the hotel has remained vacant since late 2014 with no firm interest in the continuation of the hotel use and there are clear benefits to bringing the building back into use, particularly given its key location in the context of the seafront and (The Steyne and Waterloo Square) conservation area."

It was not considered the proposal would affect the character of the hotel or the surrounding conservation area.

"The proposed conversion also includes benefits to both the appearance of the building, restoration of previously hidden features, and to the seafront economy (introduction of a new commercial use)," added Mr Davis.

The hotel is a three-storey 1830s building on The Esplanade. Support for the scheme came from the town council but three letters of objection were also received by Arun.

Road fears of councillors TRAFFIC worries have prompted Aldwick councillors to protest about renewed plans for nearby housing.

The impact of the vehicles generated by up to 300 dwellings on farmland in Hook Lane in Pagham would worsen road conditions for surrounding residents, the parish council members agreed.

Cllr Lillian Richardson told the planning committee on Monday: “West Sussex highways have said there will be an increase in traffic but that it will not be over excessive.

“That depends how you define excessive but, what really worries me about this particular development, as well as all the others, is that the traffic will short-cut through Aldwick.

“The mitigation measures at our junctions, particularly Rose Green and Gossamer Lane, are not going to be adequate to cope with the increase in traffic. It's going to put our residents in danger and it's going to be an increase which will change the nature of the through traffic in Aldwick. Because of that, I am very much opposed to it.”

Traffic concerns were also among the list of reasons outlined by Cllr Stella Coppard why the housing, by Hallam Land Management, should be refused.

She said: “There will be a significant impact on the infrastructure of the area, which is struggling to cope with the present day demand.”

The outline proposals would also lead to a loss of identity for Pagham, the lack of thought about the environmental impact of the new housing and the flooding risk were also reasons for refusal, she said.

Her comments were featured in the official list of formal objections the committee's seven members unanimously agreed to send to Arun District Council.

It was also wrong, she said, developer Hallam Land Management had resubmitted the scheme after an earlier development in 1999 was refused by Arun and an appeal against the refusal

by Arun of the current plans last January would not be heard until October.

Cllr John Bass said his neighbours were angry the plan had come back again.

“I have had a number of phone calls and talks with people asking why the plan has been put in again. I think this is against democracy,” he said/ Cllr Richard Dyer said he feared the school which formed part of the plans would be replaced by more housing.

Cllr Sue Stallard said she worried about the same happening with the land for the proposed care home also featured in the proposals.

Before the debate, Cllr Richard Gotheridge said the lack of improvements planned for Pagham's roads – and planned for the A259 instead – showed an absence of understanding about road use in the area.

“To say that residents will not use Lower Bognor Road because of mitigation measures on the A259 is wrong,” he said.

“Residents of Aldwick and Pagham do not use the A259 because of the amount of traffic on it. They use Lower Bognor Road because it's the most sensible route out of Aldwick and Pagham.”

New housing plan to replace hotel's former tennis courts A NEW attempt has been made to replace former tennis courts in Bognor Regis with housing.

Mr D Skinner has asked Arun District Council to approve his latest plan for three terraced dwellings on the site next to the Grade II-listed Royal Norfolk Hotel.

He withdrew his previous application for the site before the council had made a decision about it.

An earlier plan was rejected in 2016.

Mr Skinner's planning agent, Adrian Hoy, said in a statement: "The site represents an unkempt and overgrown eyesore in the

heart of the conservation area and in close proximity to a prominent listed building."

The area, off Aldwick Road, was formerly tennis courts after an original use of a kitchen garden.

Mr Hoy stated the latest plan overcame the main reason for not allowing development in the past of harming the hotel's setting and the character of The Steyne and Waterloo Square conservation area.

Careful thought had been given to the siting, design, layout and scale of the new housing as well as the sensitivity of the site.

'Planning system flawed' - resident AN Aldwick resident has condemned the latest application for hundreds of homes in Pagham.

Retired transport planner and qualified civil engineer Michael Hampton said it was wrong the developer was able to submit a new application before its original plans had been finally decided.

He told the Aldwick annual parish meeting: “It’s a complete travesty of any natural justice. The application which Hallam Land Management have put in is the same as the application which has already been considered by Arun District Council.

“The chairman here (of Aldwick Parish Council) has spoken against it and the members of the planning committee at Arun turned it down.

“It has gone to appeal. The hearing is not until October.

“Anyway, Hallam have put in an absolutely identical application, which the planning law allows, for

Arun to consider.

“Arun’s members could vote for that and avoid the planning inquiry entirely.

It’s a terribly flawed system that the councillors have considered it once and turned it down.”

Mr Hampton said the Hook Lane site had been considered for homes by another developer and rejected in 1999 because of transport and flooding problems.

“Nothing has changed. There is no way of dealing with the flooding and no way of improving the road system.

Mr Hampton has been working with the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (Pagam) to carry out traffic analysis on the area’s roads.

“It is almost like trying to get out of a prison south of the A27. Just getting on to or across the A27 at certain times of the day is almost impossible," he added.

He intended to find out how long it took to queue at the A27 at peak times.

` Club application BOGNOR Regis Bowls Club has applied for permission to supply alcohol and perform recorded music at its pavilion/clubhouse in Waterloo Square.

Officers are asking Arun District Council for a club premises certificate to allow for drink sales between 10am and 7pm, Monday to Friday, and until 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

In addition, on four weekdays a year, permission is being sought for extension until 11pm and on Christmas and New Year's Eve until midnight.

Artisan market is welcomed back HAND-CRAFTED items, including textiles, candles, jewellery, candles and food, were among the wide assortment of goods on offer at the first of this year's Bognor Old Town Artisan Markets.

Despite high winds, which deterred a few customer, more than 200 visitors passed through the doors of the Methodist Church at High Street to view nearly 30 stalls and enjoy entertainment and refreshments.

Singers and a couple of hardy stallholders were outside the hall while others filled the inside and the John Wesley Room in the church where refreshments were also available.

The event was staged for the children who live at Applegate Way, Simmonds Gardens and Pendleton Way and their invited guests.

Some 40 young people took part in the hunt for the eggs hidden around the roads' green.

"Several visitors liked that we had expanded into the church and they could look around it," added Chris.

The spring market was supported by Bognor Regis Business Improvement District.

Town park Rox as gales fail to blow away event organised by students EVENT management students beat the wind to bring Paris to Bognor Regis.

The six-strong team faced 40mph-plus south-west gusts as they opened the town's latest Rox Spectacular.

Their preserverance was rewarded as some 500 people went along to Hotham Park to enjoy a day of music and activities.

The weather brightened up in the afternoon to encourage people to the community event.

The day's French theme based on the hit film and musical, Moulin Rouge, was given to students by the Bognor Regisbased Rox Music and Arts charity.

Luke Jones, the team's logistics manager, said: "It's been good. A lot of people have really enjoyed the performances and they have gone very well.

"It's a shame about the weather. We have not had the number of people here that we hoped but it's been a good turnout considering the weather."

He said the chance to stage an event for the public in a setting like the park was the reason he chose to study at the University of Chichester.

"I'm sure that's the same for most of the rest of us. There is no point going into the industry to do what I want to do unless you have the experience of staging an event," he said.

"We've learned a lot from putting on this event and we will reflect on it in the next week and see what we could have done differently and how we could have improved on things."

It is the ninth year the organisation has

joined forces with the university.

Work went on all year to ensure everything ran smoothly last Saturday.

There were nine sweet and savoury food outlets, including French fare, five stalls and arts, crafts and games and a scavenger hunt activities.

The bandstand rocked all day after an opening ceremony by the town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, and Jane Smith, the town crier.

The university musical theatre society performed excerpts from Rent and Sister Act before performances from Hannah Richards and saxophonist Sam Watkins.

They were followed by the Razzamatazz Bognor Regis theatre school, Steph Baron, Arabesque School of Performing Arts, Illegal Tender and Ali Shepherd.

Eccentric and fun hosts, Lewis Haycock and Nick Carmichael, also played their role in taking visitors through the day.

Rox trustee, director and treasurer Robin Parker acted as a mentor to the students. He said: "As an event, it's fine.

The storm warning has kept people away but a few more have drifted down here in the afternoon.

"This is the smallest number of students we have worked with. They have done what they are supposed to do - put on a quality event.

"Rox has been all about quality over the years and the students have been tasked with raising their own funding just as Rox has had to do over the years.

"Money is so hard to find. More and more events are competing for the same

pockets of money. Rox is a victim of its own success. We started because there was nothing else going on. Now, there is so much going on."

The students raised ÂŁ1,640.88 before the day with further fundraising at the event, He said he would be meeting the students' lecturer this month to talk about a possible event next year.

Wendy Sealy, senior lecturer in event management, said: "The students were determined to put the event on, though I was worried about the wind.

"They said it would be OK and the sun has come out and the people have come along."

The day was the final part of months of work behind the scenes to ensure the event met legal requirements for health and safety, she said.

"Today has been invaluable for the students. They learn what the real world is like - and it can be tough.

"What that does, is make them agile graduates who show they can do the job.

"Most of the students get immediate employment because they have this sort of experience," she said.

Among those who went along to enjoy the bandstand acts was Bognor Regis resident Kay Thrift.

She said: "This event is good.

We like all the events in the park.

It shows Bognor is not dead.

"We like to listen to the music and we miss Rox now it's gone."

` Crime reporting SUSSEX POLICE is looking again at how it records a range of offences after finding it had failed to report more than half of its knife crime, the police and crime commissioner has said.

At a meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, Katy Bourne told councillors the force was looking at how it recorded a range of offences in light of the under-recording of knife crime.

As reported in March, Sussex Police figures show it had failed to record 1,322 knife crime offences between 2016 and 2018.

Mrs Bourne was responding to a question from Chichester District Council's deputy leader, Cllr Eileen Lintill, who referred to a 2014 report

by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC).

Cllr Lintill said: “A number of us were on the panel when HMIC uncovered the problems with crime reporting previously. You reassured us that it had been sorted and there weren’t any problems going forward.

“Are you concerned there are fundamental issues with how crime types are recorded?”

Mrs Bourne said: “I am monitoring this and the accuracy of how they record crimes. It was about four or five years now that HMIC did their initial crime data integrity inspection and Sussex Police were actually the highest performing force at that time.

“Whilst we are really keen, as the chief constable said, not to rest on our laurels, the issue of the knife crime recording was a lack of process. It slipped up."

The revised figures show a yearly increase of knife crime in the county.

St George's Day sets record

A RECORD turnout saw Bognor Regis Scouts stage their annual parade with a difference.

Some 1,000 people watched the first open air ceremony for St George's Day by the organisation.

The event has been held in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church for decades.

But Sunday saw it moved to Hotham Park because so many Scouting members and supporters wanted to be involved.

The hour-long celebration of the patron saint of Scouting, as well as England, was led by the Explorer Scouts this year.

Explorer Scout section leader Oliver Lewis, who compered the event, said: "It was fantastic. It was a really good turnout. There must have been a 1,000 people here.

"This was the first time we have been in the open air for a long time and it went very well. The response from everyone has been very positive."

There are about 55-60 Explorer Scouts, aged 14-18, in the district. Most of them took part in the ceremony.

"It was difficult for some of them to come out of their comfort zone but they all did very well and they are an absolute credit to their age range, said Mr Lewis.

The event began with the traditional parade through the town centre from the London Road car park and along the precinct and High Street.

Once by the park's bandstand, the Explorers included the traditional hymns, promise renewals, blessing of the flags and presentation of awards.

But they added a sketch and entertainment which starred Lord Baden Powell, 162, the founder of Scouting, and a modern relative, Bartholomew (Blaze) Powell, defeating the dragons

and thunder which threatened to overcome some hikers.

One of the hikers, Georgia Robson, 14, of Arctic Fox Explorers, said: "I was a little bit nervous but, we had done so much preparation, it was fun.

"I've been in Scouting eight years and this year's ceremony was different but it was good.

"I like Scouting because it gives you a

lot of opportunities and the chance to do something different."

District Scout chaplain Steve Lomas also staged the parable of the Good Samaritan with the help of volunteers to add to the entertainment.

Chris Boreham, the assistant district commissioner, said: "There are about 800 people involved in Scouting in the Bognor Regis district.

"The number keeps growing. Scouting keeps its traditional values of honour and respect but with a modern touch.

"We move with the times but our core beliefs stay the same."

The awards went to: Freddie Morris, Daniel Scott, Harry Mason, Alison Merrick, Timothy Holland, Katherine Bilham, Paul Embleton, Anthony Hellyer and Megan Scott.

A29 plans give charity concern CPRE SUSSEX, the Sussex countryside charity, has raised serious concerns in its response to West Sussex County Council’s A29 realignment consultation.

The charity recognises that the principle of an A29 bypass, with strategic housing allocation, has been approved through Arun District Council’s Local Plan but it has significant concerns about the timing and funding of the road and its impact on health and the environment.

Chairman of the Arun group of CPRE, Michael Warden, said: “We don’t think the proposals do constitute a ‘bypass’ in the traditional sense because this road runs through a proposed major housing development.

“We are concerned that the new road will not be built in time to mitigate the impact of more traffic from the new housing and commercial developments, leading to increased congestion and air pollution.”

The Arun group believes that the new road and infrastructure for walking and cycling should be constructed ahead of the planned housing, so that disruption on the existing road network is minimised.

The business case for the road shows the number of houses required to finance it has increased to 4,200, with the additional number being constructed after 2032.

Mr Warden said: “If the road only goes in after the housing, then there will be years of chaos while house

building is progressing. I expect that we will end up with some compromise on planned phased development, but the problem is that there could be no effective infrastructure until the housing is in place post-2032.”

CPRE Sussex is also concerned about the impact of the scheme on health and the environment.

Having attended a presentation about the A29 at Barnham Community Hall, Mr Warden said he was absolutely astounded by several statements displayed, one which claimed that air quality would be improved by constructing this road.

In response Mr Warden said: “I very much beg to differ, as all existing traffic, together with extra traffic from the major housing developments, will significantly add to the degradation of air quality. The occupants of the new developments will be greatly affected, as will the residents of Shripney and possibly Flansham.”

He disputed another statement claiming there would be no adverse impact on the biodiversity of the area.

“If you dig up the land, lay roads and build houses, you have an enormous impact on biodiversity and no amount of mitigation can make up for the disruption to wildlife and plants which are disappearing fast as we destroy our agricultural land.”

CPRE’s Arun group is concerned that this "unrealistic" proposal is “borne out of desperation to meet inflated government housing targets”.

BY KELLY WICKHAM MORE than 50 boys and girls from the 1st Barnham Scout Group received their unique Rolls-Royce patrol badges during a specially arranged visit to the home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood.

The Scout group is divided into two troops, 1st Barnham Phantom and 1st Barnham Ghost, named after two of the company’s most celebrated models.

Their new badges, featuring the cars’ names and outlines stitched in gold thread, were designed by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke team, and made to official Scout Association specification.

In place of their regular evening meeting, members of both troops

visited Rolls-Royce for a special event. The Scouts took part in team activities, games and quizzes around the themes of manufacturing, design and engineering. They also enjoyed a full tour of the manufacturing plant, where they met associates working on the production line and saw cars being built first hand. The evening culminated in the presentation of their new badges, which now take pride of place on their Scout uniforms.

Group Scout leader Mark Guy said: “Our Scouts are incredibly proud of the link with Rolls-Royce. It’s something absolutely unique and special to them.

These badges mean a tremendous amount and we’re very grateful to the

team at Rolls-Royce for making this possible for them. The Scouts really enjoyed their visit to the manufacturing plant, and seeing the cars being built has given their troop names and new badges even more meaning.”

Based at the back of the Six Villages Academy site, the pioneering pupils are fundraising, campaigning and volunteering to transform the area into a beautiful community garden

and educational space that can be used by pupils from Six Villages and other schools, as well as the wider community.

At the launch day, the pupils from Year 7 and Year 8 teamed up with teachers, family members and volunteers from Natures Way Foods to start clearing the wasteland area.

Armed with a wheelbarrow donated by the B&Q's Bognor Regis store, rakes, shovels and more, the pupils enjoyed being hard at work all day to clean up the overgrown site and pave the way for the upcoming garden.

The project is part of the landmark £2 million funding given to the school’s sponsor, Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), through the #iwill fund.

Allergy advice WEST SUSSEX Trading Standards is to contact all known takeaways in the county likely to be selling noodle dishes to offer allergy advice after traces of egg were discovered in dishes that should not have contained it.

Officers posed as customers with an egg allergy when ordering noodle dishes from ten takeaways in Worthing and Lancing.

Six of the businesses supplied dishes which, on analysis, were found to contain trace levels of egg. THis means that although egg was not an ingredient, the dish had been contaminated with egg - most likely from utensils that had been used to prepare egg dishes or the ingredients themselves had been in contact with egg.

Tests proved the levels were sufficient to have caused a reaction for some

people with an egg allergy.

Officers are trying to determine how the cross-contamination took place at the business concerned.

Trading Standards manager Peter Aston said: “Although the takeaways where issues were found were in Worthing and Lancing, it would be a reasonable assumption that similar results would be found across the county.

"For this reason, we are going to be contacting takeaways likely to be selling noodle dishes, advising them of the steps they should be taking to stop crosscontamination.”

Spot checks will continue to be made at other sellers around the county.

Uni is in top 15 THE University of Chichester has been named as one of the top 15 higher education institutions in the UK. National rankings from the Whatuni student choice awards placed Chichester as the 14th-best in the country, after votes from more than 41,000 students were counted.

THe top rankings represent a meteoric rise for Chichester, which has climbed 68 places – up from 82nd position – since last year.

THe university’s support was highlighted as the fifth best in the UK, alongside its courses and lecturers, while its students union was rated as one of the top eight in the country.

Across the last six months, the Whatuni review collection team collected more than 41,000 student reviews from 160 institutions.

University pro vice-chancellor Dr Mark Mason said: “We are immensely proud to

be named in the top 15 universities in the Whatuni student choice awards.

“Such results are testament to the commitment we make to ensuring that each of our students is treated as an individual and is supported throughout their time with us.

“It is also an affirmation of the superb work carried out by our students’ union.”

THe University of Chichester has been a strong performer in recent award rankings: its students’ union was named among the best in the country for safe drinking and well-being in a national students survey.

It is also seventh overall for student engagement, according to the 2018 UK engagement survey, and in the top ten per cent for its learning community.

` Student comes second place A CHICHESTER College brickwork student is celebrating after earning well-deserved second place at a recent college competition.

Brandon Harwood-Telfer took the runner-up spot at the regional heats of the Guild of Bricklayers competition, which was held at Highbury College, Portsmouth, on Wednesday, April 24.

In coming second, Brandon was presented with new tools and a cash prize.

Lecturer Neil Redman said: "Brandon has worked hard and did the very best he could, demonstrating skill and determination.

“He has put in a lot of time with the brickwork lecturers, including Glen Smith, Steve Smith and Dave Poppleston-Mead, to reach the standards he is achieveing.

"We thought he did really well, and it looked like he came very close to winning.

"He certainly did us all proud and we're sure the experience will stand him in good stead for the SkillBuild competition in June. It should give him confidence in his own abilities."

Although Brandon narrowly missed out on a place in the Guild of Bricklayers finals, he will have another opportunity to build on these foundations in June when he takes his place in the regional SkillBuild competition - the first stage in the route to the 2021 WorldSkills Finals in Shanghai.

Police cash boost to help Crack and opiate protect children from abuse users in region have increased

MORE than 2,500 people in West Sussex are believed to be crack cocaine and opiate users.

THe number of drug addicts is part of an estimated south east regional total of 35,135.

THe figures have been compiled

by Public Health England and is an increase of some 16 per cent in just four years.

THe report has been analysed by concerned addiction treatment experts at the UKAT treatment firm.

THey say the increase to 2,695 residents aged between 15 and 64 years old is even more worrying because the figures only include those who are using both crack cocaine and opiates like heroin and opiate-like prescription drugs.

Anyone using cocaine in powder form, amphetamines, ecstasy or cannabis has not been included.

UKAT's chief executive and former addict, Eytan Alexander, said the 3,600 people in the south east aged only 15-24 and using opiates and/or crack cocaine was of particular concern.

"Public Health England's data clearly shows that an alarming number of teenagers and young adults are addicted to these incredibly potent substances.

"THey're seeking the feeling of euphoria at pocket money prices.

"Crack rocks can be purchased for as little as a fiver with dealers available any time of day at the click of a button.

"Teenagers misusing crack and opiates at such an early age will not only suffer with the physical effects of the drugs.

"But the drugs could impact their education, overall achievement in life and expose them to a criminal environment at a young age, without full understanding of the risks and consequences of their actions."

Older age groups in the south-east's population are also addicted to crack and opiates.

Public Health England's figures show 10,621 individuals aged 2534 are addicts and a further 20,842 people aged 35-64 are hooked.

"THe impact of a person misusing these drugs in later life has a knockon effect on their family, children, spouces as well as their own personal health, which will deteriorate at a much faster pace if drug use continues and, for some, will prove fatal," added Mr Alexander.

THe south-eastern region with the highest number of users is Kent with 5,647, followed by Hampshire's 3,434.

A FREE NSPCC service which teaches primary school children how to keep themselves safe from abuse has received a cash boost from the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.

Katy Bourne awarded the charity’s Speak out Stay safe service £5,000 from the Safer in Sussex Community Safety fund which was launched by her office in 2013 for crime reduction and community safety initiatives.

With the help of mascot Buddy, specially trained NSPCC volunteers teach pupils aged four to 11 about the different forms of abuse and who they can turn to for help, such as a trusted adult or the NSPCC’s Childline service.

Following an assembly, one hour classroom workshops are also held for children in years 5 and 6.

It aims to reach children with vital, ageappropriate messages to potentially stop abuse before it occurs.

In the last academic year 2017/18, the service visited 153 Sussex schools and spoke to 39,818 primary school pupils.

Amanda Rocca, NSPCC schools area co-ordinator for Sussex, said: “We are extremely grateful to Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne.

“On average, two children in every primary school classroom have experienced abuse or neglect but many children do not seek help or tell anyone what is happening until they are much older.

THe talents of artists taking part in the popular annual event range from traditional painting and drawing through sculpture, jewellery-making, textiles, ceramics and much more.

Tom Boulton, who has a workshop in Glamis Street, in Bognor Regis, produces large letterpress prints and stationery items while Karen Saunders creates bespoke jewellery in her garden studio in Nutbourne and Leo Stevenson is an artist specialising in oil paintings of landscapes, seascapes and aviation subjects.

THe idea of the trails is for visitors to go to studios which are geographically close together with routes

grouped as city, downs, harbour, peninsula and regis but they can be visited in any order.

THere is free entry to all the venues and works will be for sale at some of them. A printed trail leaflet is available and the organisation’s website includes interviews with participants.

It's hard to not be moved by Sheila's outstanding portrayal of a woman with the start of possible dementia forcing her to 'temporarily' move in with her son and his family.

Rachel Lumberg plays Sian, Yvonne's sister, who brings huge amounts of energy and comedy to the stage every time she appeared. Goth teenager Matt, played by Scott Folan, hit the nail on the head with his performance and Kirsty MacLaren as lead star, Nicky, was faultless. Her voice was incredibly powerful and her acting will no doubt lead her to become a huge star. She stole the show as her character struggles to unite her family.

Looking around the theatre it was hard to see many of the audience left with a straight face. THere was a comment or two that surely every person in the audience could relate to at some stage, as a father, son, brother daughter, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother or grandchild.

Art, West Dean Arts and Craft Festival 2019.

A weekend bursting with creativity at West Dean College north of Chichester will enable visitors to get hands-on with drop-in workshops and classes, see live demos, buy unique crafted items, meet the makers and see the work of emerging artists at its arts and crafts festival.

Nearly 1,000 places with more than 20 workshops will available on each of the three days from May 31 to June 2, enabling people to learn a new skill or improve. A range of crafts will

Horse racing, Opening Saturday and May Festival. Music, Fernhurst Choral Society: Haydn's Creation.

Uplifting music for spring will be offered by Fernhurst Choral Society at Chichester Cathedral on May 18 as they perform Joseph Haydn’s oratorio THe Creation. THe concert will be conducted by the society’s musical director and the cathedral’s assistant organist, Tim Ravalde. THe choir will be joined by three exciting young soloists and accompanied by Downland Sinfonia.

THe Creation, which depicts the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis, is a tuneful work that is deservedly considered to be one of Haydn’s masterpieces. Haydn’s bold use of orchestral colour, his adventurous harmony, exceptional rhythmic and melodic inventiveness, and the work’s strong overall unity, bring the subject to life with an almost operatic vividness and power.

Comedy, Rob Beckett: Work in Progress. Comedian Rob Beckett titles his latest show 'Work in Progress' but this fast-rising talent already seems to have established himself already with his cheeky chappy Londoner's persona.

It's been a busy few months for the Mouth from the South with television shows alongside live work and he has just been announced as the host of a new BBC daytime quiz Head Hunters.

THe 33-year-old started doing standup comedy in 2009 and won four competitions in his first year.

THe production of books and the way the lettering went onto the page, to produce everything from a probate inventory to published book, is the fascinating subject which will be explored. Demonstrations will include bookbinding, calligraphy, fore-edge painting and quill making.

THe museum will be joining the national Museum at Night event on May 17 and 18 when it will open its doors for pre-booked visitors to experience the atmosphere of a guided walk in the museum at night. Guests will be guided by lamplight to different spaces around the museum, to hear a series of short night-time stories.

For May’s events, the theme of the stories will be poaching - with interesting historical stories and characters. At the end of the evening, participants are invited to gather around an open fire for a hot drink and biscuits.

Another historic life weekend on medieval medicine, on May 25 and

26, is not for the squeamish but will be educational - and entertaining, especially for younger visitors.

So if you were to wake up in the morning, 500 or 750 years ago and did not feel too well, or had an accident in the home, what could you have done? Where might you have gone for help? And how effective might different treatments have been? Go along to find out.

THis will then lead into half-term activities, from May 27-31, for children during the last week of the month when the theme will be the natural world.

'Pub grub' offer is well above average at venue close to sea

THere's still the warmest of welcomes from friendly staff but a bright, fresh new look after a revamp adds to a positive first impression after crossing the garden with its large, picturesque pond which is a haven for wildlife most of the year.

A new menu, too, is full of temptation and variety with changing specials, everything freshly made on the premises, meat and fish mostly from nearby suppliers, vegetarian and vegan options, smaller meals for pensioners and a children's menu but the popular Sunday carvery has been retained.

Being a bar, a good choice of beers and spirits is on offer as well as red, white and rose wines by the glass or bottle. On the day we visited, as I was driving, I stuck to lemonade while my husband enjoyed a pint of Seafarer bitter.

Following a warm welcome from manager Dean, who guided us through the many specials available as well as the standard menu, we decided to forego

starters in the interests of both having desserts, all of which, like everything else coming out of the Pond Barn's kitchen, are made on the premises.

Emphasising the pub's position within sound of the sea, the standard mains menu includes a tempting seafood platter, and scampi or battered fish and chips, while mussels were on the specials board when we visited. Other specials were bubble and squeak with ham and egg, turkey, ham and leek pie and a beef Madras curry plus four varieties of burger.

Vegans can enjoy a butternut squash and chick pea curry while carnivores can try a hunters' chicken or the steak of the day.

Steaks are sourced from one of the independent nearby butchers, either rump or ribeye, and I was delighted with my choice of a succulent ribeye, served with a generous portion of standard chips, tomato, mushroom and peas.

My husband always loves mussels available as either a small portion or a main - and instantly chose the classic moule marinaire with a couple of dozen shellfish cooked in a smooth, wellflavoured garlic, cream and parsley sauce.

We were told mussels cooked in Spanish-style tomato-based sauce and a THai-style one with cream and coconut are also popular.

Accompanied by crusty bread, plus a few of my chunky chips, the mussels were an undoubted hit.

With their excellent presentation and melt-in-the-mouth sweetness, our desserts of bakewell tart and an unusual chocolate and apricot bread and butter pudding were also top of the hit parade - a fitting metaphor for a pub which regularly has live music, DJs and karaoke as part of its entertainment offering as well as big screen TVs, darts and pool.

Vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of 15 options and we plumped for champignons al ajillo (mushrooms), zazilki - a Greek-style yoghurt - and pimentos rellenos, which was an ovenbaked sweet red pepper stuffed with spinach in a cheese sauce. THe chefs are happy to adjust ingredients for dietary requirements on request, a typical example of the warm and pleasant attitude of all the team.

For meat tapas, we added pollo Marbella, which was pan fried chicken with chorizo, onion and peppers in a creamy paprika sauce, then the succulent chef's special prawns in sauce.

Luckily, there was enough ciabatta to mop up the flavoursome sauces and, feeling pleasantly full but not overstuffed, I was able to enjoy a moist, light tiramisu from the list of home-made desserts.

The show still goes on at town's seafront site Entertainment dates back to 1911 at the key location WE have recently taken a look at architecture within our area and I thought we would take a look at two very diverse buildings, both of which were constructed to provide a facility for the general public.

First, we will take a look at a building constructed in 1911 by local builder, William Tate, that of the Kursaal. William was also responsible for the Arcade and many other constructions at the turn of the last century.

The Kursaal, once described as a large complex with copper domes and white woodwork, was opened to the public on Sunday, June 4, 1911, with a concert by the Royal Garrison Artillery Band. This was followed by the first production of a musical by Heidleberg.

We can only surmise how the building was perceived when it was constructed, on a somewhat open seafront. It must have appeared to be a very ambitious large construction with its distinctive architectural design, especially considering the population of the town, which at that time was just over 8,000.

The original Kursaal building contained a rooftop roller-skating rink and club and a small concert hall with the main theatre able to seat an audience of 1,200 people for their popular shows. At the end of the First World War, approximately eight years

after the opening, there was a name change because of anti-German feeling. Any German connections were now unwelcome so, in 1919, it was renamed the Theatre Royal.

The advertising of this facility was quite extensive and just one of the brochures for the 1923 season lists all the live concerts to be held during July, August and September with prices ranging from 1s (5p) in the upper circle to £1.05 for a reserved box.

Additionally, there was the Palais De Danse, Pierrotland Concert Hall, Theatre Royal, Mimosa Café and Tea Gardens which were soon being supported by the public. On the first floor was the Esplanade Club, which residents could join, and holidaymakers could pay 2s (10p) per week for admittance to the club. It was very popular as the club had a balcony running along the whole of the front of the building where members could sit and view the sea.

The building was closed for a few years during the Second World War because the seafront was out of bounds to the public.

The last live show was at Christmas 1941 and then in 1947 it reopened as the Rex Entertainment Centre.

After extensive refurbishment and the welcome addition of a ballroom with a 'smooth maple floor and luxurious appointment', according to a press report in

August, 1947, it was also 'destined to become Bognor’s most popular rendezvous for young people'. The first dance held was in support of the local community and was attended by 600 people, with proceeds being presented to the British Red Cross. The Theatre Royal, entered from Belmont Street, retained that name when the seaward end of the complex became the Rex. However, stage shows ceased and it ended its life as a cinema.

Shops were also a feature of the Rex Building, being under the roof along York Road, shielded by a covered walkway. One of the main landmarks was a unique clock advertising Wade, the jewellers and opticians prominently situated on the corner. The clock was operated by a unit inside the shop and was illuminated by a gas jet. In the 1930s there was a gas explosion, which resulted in glass and jewellery being scattered into York Road.

This building was occupied by Jas. Walker until its closure in 1975.

Following the major refurbishment of the Rex, this area became more fashionable for the local shop owners - mainly housing ice cream parlours, tobacconists and other summer seaside related shops, including toys, fancy goods, rock shops, booksellers and cafés.

The Theatre Royal, which was approached down a short Arcade leading from Belmont Street, also housed a number of shops including in the Arcade: Marshals – ladies outfitter, WK Rolfe and Co. a music warehouse and Dyson and Son (Bognor) Ltd. Finally, in October, 1979, this grand Edwardian construction, which had dominated the seafront since 1911, was demolished.

Eventually, this area was to be redeveloped

with the Regis Centre being built in its place.

The Regis Centre was advertised as a £950,000 entertainment centre and as part of a central feature of a redevelopment area for the seafront. The shows destined for the Regis Centre were those that had been enjoyed in the Esplanade Theatre.

The Regis Centre was opened by the Duke of Norfolk on March 11, 1980. The theatre had seating for 382 people, there were meeting rooms, at that time, with an area capable of holding 500 people and a café.

It is quite interesting to look through paperwork and reports of a building that has been so much in the public eye and has had so much written about it over its history.

Memory tends to enhance poor publicity while the excellent shows will most probably have been forgotten.

Since the Regis Centre opened it has gone through many phases, not least being the transformation of the hall and several meeting rooms into The Regis pub, facing the promenade and the very popular Alexandra Theatre.

As with many venues, there are numerous stories that could be related, but the majority are about the excellent shows that are now performed, with such a range of content from professional shows to the excellent amateur shows.

We have a charitable trust consisting of many volunteers who look after the shows and both the interior and exterior of the building, a major task for volunteers.

So we should all support their work by attending the performances that are put on for our entertainment.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Thursday, April 4 - Although the weather was cold and windy yesterday at Bognor, the King passed some time in the grounds of Craigweil House, and it was reported last night that he had again had a satisfactory day.

The Prince of Wales visited the King and Queen at Craigweil House yesterday, having come from London by air.

The Prince motored yesterday morning to the RAF aerodrome at Northolt, where he entered a two-seater machine piloted by FlightLieutenant DS Don, flew to Tangmere Aerodrome, which is about five miles from Craigweil House, and landed shortly after noon.

After spending nearly five hours there, the Prince travelled by air to London in the late afternoon.

Saturday, April 6 - The King spent a quiet and satisfactory day yesterday. He walked in the grounds of Craigweil House in the morning for a short while, as the weather was dull, and a cold wind blew from the north.

The Queen went from Bognor to Brighton yesterday afternoon and visited the Royal Pavilion. A tour was made of the museum and art gallery and the free library.

Her Majesty afterwards motored to Hove and inspected the public museum, where she was shown a collection of Chinese and Japanese needlework.

PROLIFIC freelance author Catherine Butcher is the next guest speaker at a Bognor Regis church's breakfasts.

Catherine, pictured above, has written more than 12 books and is also the communications director for HOPE. This is an initiative which works to connect the church to prisons.

She will be appearing at the Cherished women's breakfast being held at 8.30am on May 11 at the Opengate Church in Victoria Drive. She said: "...the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never visited...' "A beautiful garden, a golden city, a royal wedding, a victory parade - all give us a glimpses of eternity, which we will explore together as we think about our own longings and hopes."

Her books have also included What You Always Wanted To Know About Heaven, God's Rescue Plan and A New Mum's Special Gift.

In her HOPE role, Catherine has co-written, with Mark Greene, The Servant Queen and the King She Serves - a gift book which sold a million copies to mark the Queen's 90th birthday to which the Queen contributed the foreword.

Her 40 Stories of HOPE, with a foreword by the Archbishop of Canterbury, was the Lent book chosen by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland last year.

Newspaper-trained, Catherine as a first degree in government and modern history and also has a Masters in Christian spirituality from the University of London.

She lives with Adrian on the edge of the South Downs.

A BOGNOR REGIS fundraiser is looking forward to seeing the sights for charity.

Mrytle Green, 84, is set to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth to support a radio station where she volunteers.

She hopes her daredevil event will raise £1,000 for Angel Radio. Based in Havant, this is a mainly volunteerrun radio station which broadcasts to the over 60s on air and on the internet.

She said: "I just thought the abseil would be something different."

Her fundraiser at the 170m-high visitor attraction will take place on June 2, weather permitting.

It follows her 10,000ft freefall parachute jump last year - pictured above - in aid of St Wilfrid's Hospice at Chichester after it looked after her late husband, Bill, before he died from pancreatic cancer in 2015.

She raised £1,600.

"I never been scared of heights," said Myrtle. "They don't bother me.

A QUARTER of a century of help to make the Bognor Prom 10k road race the town's biggest sporting success has been praised.

Bognor Hotham Rotary Club has thanked the residents of the town, the services in the area and the many charities and businesses who have assisted with the May event since it began.

Their assistance has contributed to make each of the stagings, pictured below, enjoyable as the event has grown to become one of the major running events in the south of England.

This year's race - on May 19 - will be a special occasion as it will be 25th race anniversary of the first run.

Some 2,000 adult runners - and about 200 in the junior fun run - are expected to take part along the return route from Silverston Avenue to Felpham and back.

The Hotham Rotary club members have continued to stay involved but have signed a working arrangement with Felpham-based Tone Zone Runners to take on the leading role in organising the day.

Rotary club press officer Brian Clarke said: "Just 25 years ago, while sitting in the now defunct Ship Inn in Aldwick, five keen runners who were also members of the Bognor Hotham Rotary Club, had the idea of organising a 10k run in Bognor Regis.

"With the support of the Rotary Club and other friends, the first Bognor Prom 10k race became a reality with approximately 400 entrants. Now, it is a premier sporting event with 2,000 entrants.

"It is a remarkable achievement which could only have happened because of the goodwill and generosity of local residents, the hard work of volunteers, and the many charities and businesses who offer assistance - for which the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham thank everybody wholeheartedly."

The years since the first race in the mid-1990s had seen a major change in staging races.

The manual task of record keeping had developed into a high tech and accurately-timed process. Health and safety assessments and traffic management also played a bigger and more essential part of the preparations and race day.

These changes had led the Rotarians to join with Tone Zone, said Mr Clarke.

"These forward thinking changes will encourage fresh ideas and improve the event, ensuring its continued success in the years to come."

Race proceeds will continue to be distributed by the Rotary Club to deserving causes locally, nationally and internationally.

MUSICIANS from the University of Chichester will be performing at a concert tomorrow.

They will present an exciting and varied solo and ensemble repertoire at the Bognor Regis Music Club.

The performers will include soprano Ellie Farmer and pianists Yizhuo Li and Freddie Harvey. They will play Grieg's Wedding Day in Troldhaugen and Chopin's D flat Nocturne.

They will be presented by the university's head of vocal studies, Susan Legg.

Their concert will start at 7pm in the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road, Bognor Regis.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "Each year we look forward to this concert which gives students an opportunity to play in front of a sympathetic audience.

"We know the performers will be of a high standard, reflecting the quality of the music department, which is the largest in the country with over 1,000 students."

Entry at the door is £6 for the club's members and £8 for visitors. Students will be admitted free of charge.

Darts CLIFF PRIOR made it back-to-back wins in the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out Blind Knockout competition as he hit bullseye with his last dart to lift the title with partner Ian Bennison.

THe QEII Cobras player struck up a good partnership with Bennison of Fisherman's Joy and combined to defeat Dean Ardener (QE2 Lions) & Graham Hollis (Fishermans Joy) in the final.

After taking the first leg, Prior and Bennison ran away with things in the second as their opponents could not hit their in-shot.

Ardener eventually hit double 16 and a ton, but a broken stem for Prior halted the game. Prior returned but just missed double 8 for a 95 out-shot.

But even a ton from Hollis left them trailing, and Bennison took the leg.

Leg 3 saw both teams again start straight away. Prior hit a ton with his second throw, and Hollis hit a 140, but that still left himself and Ardener behind.

With 105 left, Prior hit single 1 and treble 18, leaving himself with 50.

With the last dart, he hit the bullseye, taking the title and taking home ÂŁ110 between them.

Short Mat Bowls INFINITY Short Mat Bowls Club continued their excellent form by lifting a charity cup in Portsmouth.

A team featuring Vanessa and Robin Armstrong, together with Pauline and Steve Jeffery, travelled to North End Bowls Club for the Charity 4s competition last weekend, which was in aid of THe Rowans Hospice in Waterlooville.

THe Boxgrove-based quartet performed well and made it through to the final to take on Purbrook before coming out on top.

THe competition, which was organised

by Andrew Shorney, is in its seventh year and raised ÂŁ400.

Infinity were delighted with the result, especially as Vanessa and Pauline only joined the club last September after not bowling for several years.

Elsewhere, Donnington Short Mat Bowls Club is looking for new members.

THe non-league club meets in the parish hall at Donnington, five times a week, from autumn to spring.

Marathon effort by Tone Zone team MORE than a dozen Bognor Tone Zone runners went the extra mile to complete this year's London Marathon.

THe 26 mile race is one of the most iconic in the world, seeing runners take in the sights of London while being cheered on by crowds of hundreds of thousands of people before crossing the finish line outside Buckingham Palace.

Leading the cohort of 14 runners home was Kari Mack, who ran a personal best of 3 hours 12 minutes (3:12) to beat the ladies club marathon record set by herself last year.

Duncan Stephenson-Gill demolished the demons that he had at last year’s race, to finish in a time of 3:16.

Another notable performance came from Carolyn Stapley who after having a tough 2018 came back with a 15 minute PB with 3:29.

Anne Kari Enes, who never seems to struggle, ran a consistent race as she always does to finish in 3 hours 31 minutes. Ian Bayley, back on the streets of London again this year, finished in 3 hours 52 minutes.

Donna Strowger, Karen Vilday and Lucy Isitt all finished close together and all gained PBs with sub 4:30 times.

David Butler and Paul Stevenson finished in 4:37 and 4:53 while Jade Fish ran an impressive race to finish in just over five hours.

After only starting running last year, Elle Matthews completed her first ever marathon in a time of 5:12. Nicola Kettley also ran her first marathon in 5:32, just ahead of Natalie Strudwick, who recorded a PB of 5:35.

Another marathon this weekend was the Blackpool Marathon.

Running buddies Carl Bryant and Andy Miles had trained together all year for this event and both runners battled the winds on the south coast to achieve a PB of 4:05.

THe third marathon of the weekend was the Madrid Marathon, in a slightly warmer and less windy climate.

Mark and Jackie Williamson were the first two home in a time of 3:58 and 4:20.

Grace Natoli added another marathon to her tally this year and finished in 4:45 while Derek Natoli completed the half in 2:10.

Closer to home, in Angmering, was the Bluebell 10 mile and 10k, running through the local woods. Jess THomson was the second woman to finish on the day in an incredible time of 1 hour 11 minutes.

Top class field for Goodwood RACING returns to Goodwood this weekend with an intriguing meeting pitching a number of Grade One hopes into early season action.

THe opening Saturday fixture includes an excellent seven-race programme featuring two Listed contests for fillies and mares plus the ÂŁ50,000 Goodwood May Food Festival Handicap.

Coronet, who has raced consistently in Group One races on her past four starts, is the standout among 14 entries for the ÂŁ50,000 Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Daisy Warwick Stakes (2.05pm) over 12 furlongs.

Trained by John Gosden, the five-year-old Dubawi mare finished second in three G1 contests and third in the other during 2018, including an agonising nose defeat by Waldgeist in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in July.

Cheveley Park Stud's Pilaster is set to push Coronet close, as Roger Varian's horse returns to the scene of her biggest win yet, the Lille Langtry Stakes at the festival in August.

Elsewhere, last year's 1000 Guineas winner, Billesdon Brook, is set to begin her four-year-old campaign in the other Listed race, the ÂŁ50,000 Conqueror Fillies' Stakes (3.45pm, 17 entries) over a mile.

Her trainer, Richard Hannon's other entry, Anna Nerium, also has winning course form, having swooped late to win the G3 Weatherbys Racing Bank Supreme Stakes in August.

THe ÂŁ50,000 Goodwood May Food Festival Handicap (2.40pm) over seven furlongs has attracted 21 entries.

All-weather star Goring will feature heavily in the betting after landing the ÂŁ50,000 apprentices' handicap under Georgia Dobie at Lingfield. THe weights are set to be headed by the Yorkshire trained THree Saints Bay, THe first of the seven races, the Double Trigger Handicap, is named after the only three-time winner of the Goodwood Cup and staged at 1.35pm.

Tickets can be purchased from ÂŁ12 in advance and accompanied under 18s go free in all enclosures.

PAGHAM'S poor end to the 2018/19 continued right to the bitter end as the Lions rounded off the season with defeat to lowly Eastbourne United.

In what has been a season of two halves at Nyetimber Lane, Tom Simmonds side went from promotion contenders at the end of November to mid-table obscurity by April.

Injuries and the departure of crucial players to other teams contributed to the miserable run of form after the festive break.

Since Christmas, Pagham won just two of 20 matches in the SCFL Premier, a streak which saw them tumble down the table.

A 3-2 loss to relegation-threatened Eastbourne United in the final match of the season was the club's ninth loss in a row.

Goals from Liam Brady and Alfie Davidson looked to have bagged Lions a point.

But such has been Pagham's form in the second half of the season, a late winner for the visitors surprised no one and ensured Eastbourne United preserved their league status for another season.

For Lions, who finished the season in 11th, the close season will be give plenty of time to reflect and rebuild.

THe departure of joint manager Richie Hellen last month means that Tom Simmonds will take on all duties in the dugout.

His task will be to bring some experienced players into the club to complement an exciting crop of youngsters who have inspired Pagham to under 18s and under 21s success in recent seasons.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey completed a good season with a 3-0 win over Worthing United.

Ollie Hambleton put the Blues in front with a well-taken strike from 15 yards out in the first half.

THe victory was sealed in the second period when Tom Jefkins struck on the hour mark before Ryan Morey added a third ten minutes later.

It means that Daren Pearce's side ended the season in fifth spot, a good return for a club which enjoyed an excellent run in.

Fellow Division One side Sidlesham will also be happy with their campaign, despite a 3-1 loss to Wick last weekend.

A 10th place finish for Steve Bailey's side on their return to senior football means the club exceeded expectations for the year.

Muitt hopes to be fit and give Rocks a boost

ROCKS hotshot Jimmy Muitt says he hopes to be fit and raring to go for Bognor's cup final date.

THe club's top scorer was enjoying his best season at Nyewood Lane to date, netting 26 goals by the end of February as the club were well in the hunt for a playoff spot.

But a knee injury halted Muitt in his tracks and his absence coincided with Bognor slipping from fifth down to an eventual 14th place finish in Bostik Premier.

THe Rocks frontman returned to action against Whitehawk on Easter Monday, getting 30 minutes on the pitch in the 0-0 draw.

But with the Sussex Senior Cup final at THe Amex looming, Muitt is going all out to be fit for the Rocks big day.

He said: "I really want to play that [game] more than anything so we'll see. It [the knee] feels okay at the moment so hopefully I'll get to the Sussex Cup Final, which is local for me, even better.

"I've got a lot of people coming to watch - the whole family - so hopefully I'll get fit, get playing, because we're all looking forward to it."

Muitt began his career with the Seagulls, racking up ten years as he progressed through the club's

youth set-up.

During that time, the Rocks number 10 came up against the likes of Raheem Sterling, Rob Holding and Ruben LoftusCheek, all of whom are now plying their trade in the Premier League.

It was during a Sussex Senior Cup match for Albion against the Rocks when he impressed those who matter at Nyewood Lane, when Muitt scored twice in a 4-2 win for Bognor.

So after his release from Lewes in 2016/17, it was not long before Jimmy signed on at the Nye Camp. THree seasons on and Muitt is very much at home, netting 26 goals in what has been a prolific season.

THat was before injury hit and hampered both his and the Rocks' progress.

Muitt said: "THe season has turned very average, to say the least, but the final is something that we have worked hard for and it's something we are looking forward to.

"Definitely, as a player for me and as a team, it's good to get in the final of any cup and it's good to play at THe Amex where I have played before.

"I am really looking forward to that. I’ll definitely try to get fit for that."

Waine stars as Chi seal third CHICHESTER CITY boss Aaron Smith has hailed skipper Tammy Waine as the "complete professional" after the centre half scored one and saved one to help the side seal their best ever league finish.

THe club captain, who retires this month, netted a penalty in City's final home match of the season against QPR. THe, after regular keeper Lauren Dolbear was sent off, Waine picked up the gloves to preserve the clean sheet in the 3-0 win.

THat victory, the club's fourth this month, sealed third place in the National Southern Premier - their highest ever finish.

With an away match against struggling Gillingham to come this weekend (Sunday, 2pm) Smith hopes his side can round off a "phenomenal season" with yet another win.

Smith said: "For the first half of this season up until Christmas no one could score against us and we were nicking games 1-0, 2-0. THen that sort of slipped and we were making individual errors across the field which resulted in goals. But the last few weeks we have been solid.

"QPR have a frightening front line and have caused a lot of teams in this division problems. For us to completely shut them out I'm really chuffed.

"Hopefully, we can take that into Gillingham for the last game of the season."

Crucial to the victory was the performance of Waine who slotted home a penalty for her

first goal of the season before stepping in at the other end.

Tash Stephens and Lauren Cheshire scored the other goals.

Smith said: "She [Tammy] is brilliant and has been brilliant all season. She is not only playing well but she raises the game of others around her.

"I was completely shocked when Lewes released her but her signing for us was one of the biggest signings the club have ever made.

"She is fantastic - a complete professional.

She supports players off the field, she supports the staff off the field and she is a lovely person to have around."

IT has been a real adventure following Rocks home and away this season.

Despite the results after Christmas, the banter on the coach trips and the people who go week in and week out make it a lot easier when the team on the pitch isn’t doing all that great.

THe performances have been good but sometimes things go against you on the pitch.

THe final game of the season sort of summed up our entire year.

I felt we played well at Folkestone.

We went there with a depleted squad (sounds familiar!) but with real intent to hurt Invicta's playoff hopes.

As it was, we just couldn't put away our chances and we were beaten by a long range pass over the defence, letting Ira Jackson through to score.

I thought we deserved better but then again we were also lucky not to lose by two or three goals in the end!

THe result means that we ended the season in 14th position.

I'm not sure that we were a bottom half side, especially when you look at our squad on paper.

But then again the league table never lies and we were just not good enough in the final two months of the season to keep up with those pushing for promotion to National South.

If there has been a personal highlight of the year then it must be the success of Rocks Radio.

Its been a real pleasure working alongside Lee Roberts, Jordan Evans, Len Kilpatrick and Peter Hood on the digital airwaves this season.

I think we have brought fans just that little bit closer to the action if they can’t make the game.

Half the time I am ‘winging it’ while co-commentating trying to give a bit of insight into the match or the players so that those tuning in are

informed but also entertained.

I have to say that Lee is very good at calling the action which makes my job easier and I know the fans are gripped at home listening in.

Without the fans' support, it probably wouldn’t have continued but there has been backing from the supporters club and hard work from those within to get the service running.

I have really enjoyed it and long may Rocks Radio continue.

Of course, we will be broadcasting live on the inter web for the upcoming Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Final against Burgess Hill Town at THe Amex Stadium in Falmer.

THis will be my third time visiting the impressive Premier League stadium.

THe first two occasions have not been ideal - I have yet to see us score a goal there!

THird time lucky for us I hope!

With Jimmy Muitt returning to full fitness at the right time, and impressing against Whitehawk and Folkestone when he came on, I am sure he will be desperate to be there and involved in this game.

I think its also a perfect final opportunity for some other players to shine.

Last time out in the final we lost to Peacehaven & Telscombe 3-0 and before that to Brighton & Hove Under 23s 4-0.

I always remember Terry Dodd hitting the post in front of the Bognor faithful last time out! Couldn’t believe it! I will never forget it.

But I hope this time out we will beat the Hillians and end the season on a high!

If Bognor do manage to win it, the Rocks will end over 30 years of hurt as they last won it in the 1986/7 season! It's about time we did it again!

See everyone at THe Amex on Tuesday - and fingers crossed we will end the season with something to celebrate.

PostSport f Chi celebrate lifting the league title

CHICHESTER CITY boss Miles Rutherford has praised his players for showing "unparalleled commitment" in helping the club to the SCFL Premier crown.

THe Oaklands Park side wrapped up their season last weekend with a disappointing 4-1 loss at Eastbourne Town.

But the first defeat in the league since November did not dampen the celebratory mood from everyone involved with the club.

THanks to an unbeaten 23 match run, Chi finished the season as champions, with a tally of 94 points - nine points more than second place Horsham YMCA. THe result is a first county league title in 15 years and promotion to step four for the first time in the club's history.

For Rutherford, who joined City after 12 seasons at Portsmouth-based Moneyfields, the success was all down to the players he had at his disposal.

Writing on social media, the manager said: "On reflection, the chaps this year have been a delight to work with.

"THey have shown unparalleled commitment throughout and shown quality when called upon when it was needed the most. We have also had a right laugh.

"I doff my cap to all the

players and applaud every single one of them."

Chi made a number of changes for the match at third-place Town as they were missing regular keeper Ryan Young, midfield maestro Matt Axell and the mercurial Gicu Iordache.

After falling behind on the stroke of half time, Scott Jones grabbed an equaliser for the visitors, sweeping the ball into the back of the net for his 24th league goal of the season. THe strike was also City's 107th in the league this season.

But Town rallied and scored three second half strikes to gain a comfortable victory.

It was not enough to lift them into the top two though as YM's 2-1 win at Langney ensured the Horsham side would be joining Chi in the Bostik league next season.

City will celebrate the title win at the players presentation night tomorrow evening (Saturday) at the clubhouse in Oaklands Park from 6pm. All supporters are welcome.

On Sunday, May 5, at 4pm, the club is holding a veterans game to honour the memory of ex-players Brian Clarke and Mark Hyde. Plenty of former Chichester City players have committed to play.

Entry is free and the game will be followed by an evening disco in the clubhouse.

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is urging his side to win the Sussex Senior Cup as a thank you for the supporters.

THe veteran manager admitted the club has had an "extremely disappointing" season after a 1-0 loss at Folkestone Invicta saw Rocks finish 14th in the Bostik Premier.

And while other clubs will be now focussing on the playoffs and possible promotion to National South, Bognor's attention turns to the county cup - and the chance to lift silverware on Tuesday (7.45pm) at Brighton's Amex stadium.

Standing in the way of Rocks lifting the trophy for the first time in more than 30 years are league rivals Burgess Hill Town, who finished second bottom.

Despite 20 points separating the two sides in the standings, Pearce has warned against any complacency.

He said: "We would like to win something for the fans. Our away form has been as good as anyone in the league but our home form has been terrible.

"We want to do something that

shows how appreciative we are of their support."

Rocks will be boosted in their pursuit of silverware with the return of on-loan Portsmouth striker Bradley Lethbridge and top scorer Jimmy Muitt. Mason Walsh and Doug Tuck could also feature. But Reece MylesMeekums, Ed Sanders and Joe Tomlinson are cup tied.

He added: "Looking at our form over the last nine games and we are the ones with relegation form.

"We are expecting a very hard game as they are a good team. But if we put in the same collective effort that we did against Folkestone then we will create chances. What I can’t promise is if we can take them."

For Pearce, the competition is a chance to look back to the club's glory years of the 1980s when they lifted the trophy in five consecutive seasons.

He said: "Back then there was a great deal of prestige around the competition.

"While some of that may have gone there's no doubt that it is still important and we will be going all out to win it."
