THe campaigners were backed at a meeting of West Sussex County Council’s environment, community and fire select committee where members called for the existing plans to be put on hold until the consultation ended on April 26.

But their decision has been overruled by the council’s cabinet member for highways and infrastructure,

Cllr Roger Elkins.

Mr Steer said: “His decision is disgusting. I can’t believe how a unanimous vote in favour of halting the scheme for the consultation to finish can be ignored.

“THere are too many unanswered questions about this road for it to continue as it is.”

Mrs Steer said: “THey had proper notice of these questions at the committee

meeting and they were still unable to answer them.

“If Cllr Elkins thinks that is satisfactory, then it is certainly not satisfactory by anyone else’s standards.”

Head is backed by school watchdog AN EDUCATION expert has supported the work of a Bognor Regis school's headteacher.

Ofsted inspector Felix Rayner said Katie Jarvis and her leadership team had maintained the good quality of education at Bersted Green Primary School.

Mr Rayner visited the school earlier this month for its first short inspection since the school was judged to be good in 2015.

He kept the rating following his day watching lessons and meeting pupils, staff and parents.

He told Dr Jarvis: "You, along with senior leaders, know the school well.

"You have achieved a lot but know there is still more to do. You take decisive action to overcome weaknesses and are clear on the priorities to move the school forward."

THe next steps for the school to continue the improvements was to ensure middle teaching leaders check on the impact of their actions with further precision, and to establish new approaches to teaching maths and provide further chances for pupils to use their reasoning skills.

Dr Jarvis said she believed the report was an accurate reflection.

"We are particularly pleased that the impact from changes, including the expansion to become an all-through primary school, shone through.

"THe improvements have come about through our strong shared vision and our commitment as a team to provide the best opportunities for each of our pupils to become the best they can."

THe past four years have seen the school, in Laburnum Grove, expand to become an all-through primary school with 321 pupils from Reception to Year 6.

Mr Rayner said the children were positive about the school.

"THey feel they are challenged and they like the way teachers make learning fun and interesting," he said.

Making the curriculum engaging had helped to meet a recommendation from the previous report for work to raise pupils' achievement by ensuring they gained a thorough knowledge and understanding of the topics they studied.

Teaching leaders had also acted to enable staff to improve their teaching by sharing effective practices more widely, said Mr Rayner.

Children made good progress from low starting points and strategies brought in by the leader of early years had paid off.

THe school had strong safeguarding arrangements and introduced action to correct an attendance rate that was below the national average in 2018.

He said: "You have introduced rewards for high attendance and, alongside this, you have worked with families to ensure they know how important it is for pupils to come to school every day.

"You provide additional support for families where additional is a concern and have introduced penalty fines when families do not respond to this support."

More remained to be done, he added, but attendance had improved and was in line with similar schools.

Evening at town surgery will focus on facts of dementia DEMENTIA will be the topic at the next patient information evening at a Bognor Regis surgery.

THe event will take place at 7pm next Tuesday at the Maywood Surgery in Hawthorn Road. It will be held in its upstairs meeting room, which is accessible by lift.

Sue Hawker, of the surgery's patient group, said: "We have a trustee from Saga House, Dr Sara Kelly, who will talk about the clinical aspects of dementia and also Nicki Clarke, who will talk about Sage House itself and the services that it offers.

"Maywood Surgery is working

towards becoming a dementia friendly surgery and is a member of the Dementia Alliance.

"We are hoping to engage with patients impacted by dementia in order to improve their experience if visiting the surgery and how we can help them through what are often difficult times."

THe patient group has funded a wide range of extra equipment and furniture over the years to improve patients' visits to the surgery.

THe No 73 Creative Arts Studio is staging the event to raise money to enable more people to be able to enjoy its facilities.

THe studio is run by the Aldingbourne Trust as part of its work to enable people with learning disabilities to live independently.

THe exhibition is taking place daily from 10am to 3.30pm, April 8 to April 10, at the studio at 73 Aldwick Road.

One of those whose work will be on show is Nadia Tourbay. She will have some four pieces of sewing showing animals like bees and giraffes in the exhibition.

She said: "I like animals and I like

sewing. It's very relaxing. I come to the studio all day on Mondays and Wednesdays.

"I've been in exhibitions before and it's absolutely fabulous having your work on show and people looking at it."

THe studio has been open for some years but it has become too small.

Helen Rawlings, its lead creative arts instructor, said she expected 60-80 pieces of art to be on display in the exhibition.

"We have taken part in the Chichester Art Trail but this is the first exhibition we have held like this.

"We want to raise enough money to be able to expand. THis will enable us to have a quiet area and have about four extra people a day," she said.

"We can accommodate 10 at the

moment but we have a waiting list.

"THe studio is somewhere for our students to socialise and learn artistic skills.

"It gives them something good to do and have a finished product at the end of it which they can have people come in and have a look at it.

"THis is a lovely, friendly environment and it's good for the people here to be able to show their skills."

As well as the art trail, the studio's artists have taken part in the Chichester Flower Festival and have won many prizes in an art competition held by the Mencap charity.

THey are also taking part in an exhibition by art students at the University of Chichester.

“THe consultation was sold on the scheme being environmentally friendly and we have a cycle lane and path that finishes at a busy, dangerpus road. It is, therefore, a road/path/cycle lane to nowhere.

“It was devastating for us, seeing our property under the cycle path, when in fact it was just incorrect maps at the consultation,” said Mr Steer.

“How many other errors or misleading facts were on view?

How are the public supposed to comment when the true facts are not publicised?”

Continuing the 4km new road to the A259 would have enabled the cycle and footpaths to link up by missing out Lidsey and Shripney, he said.

A county council spokesperson said: “Indicative alignment illustrations do not show detail and we are always happy to provide detailed maps to allay any concerns.

Announcing his decision to allow the project to continue, Cllr Elkins said the new road would provide improved infrastructure to support the economy in the county and help to ensure new homes were built.

"It is clear to me from the information given by officers that withdrawing the decision would result in delays to the delivery programme," he said.

"THis is a major infrastructure project with multiple funding partners and dependencies, so delaying the delivery programme would incur potential legal, financial and reputational risks.

"Although I acknowledge the level of local concern that exists about the scheme that was reflected in the committee debate and recommendations, I also note that the committee supports, in principle, the need for the scheme.

"THerefore, I consider that the decision should not be withdrawn as to do so would delay the delivery programme and could jeopardise delivery of the scheme.

"However, in response to the committee's recommendations, I can confirm that comments received during the consultation will be taken into account before the scheme design is finalised.

"I will also ensure that procurement of a design and build contractor should only take place provided that no substantive changes are required to the scheme."

Landlord fines are brought in ROGUE landlords around Bognor Regis could be fined £30,000 under new powers.

THe dodgy property owners will be hit with fixed penalty notices, as an alternative to being prosecuted, if they deliberately break the law and put their tenants at risk. Property agents will also be subject to the sanction.

Arun District Council's licensing committee has agreed the notices should be brought in. THe decision at last Friday's meeting is expected to be backed by all the council's members in July.

Nat Slade, Arun's group head of technical services, told the committee: "THese provisions give the council, as the local housing authority, the power to issue a financial penalty for certain Housing Act 2004 offences after April 6, 2017, as an alternative to prosecution."

THe offences include failing to comply with an improvement notice, offences in relation to the licensing of houses in multiple occupation and contravening an overcrowding notice.

Setting the level of the financial penalty will take into account the severity of the offence, the harm caused to the tenant and deterring the offender from repeating the offence.

"THe nature of harm will depend on the personal characteristics and circumstances of the victim, like the tenant," said Mr Slade.

THe highest harm category includes a housing defect which gives rise to a serious and substantial threat of harm to residents and visitors. Examples of this are the danger of electrocution, carbon

monoxide poisoning or a serious fire risk.

Mr Slade said: "Where no actual harm has resulted from the offence, the council will consider the relative danger that persons have been exposed to as a result of the offender's conduct, the likelihood of harm occurring and the gravity of harm that could have resulted."

THe fines which will be levied are set in six bands up to £30,000. THey will start at £2,500.

"Fixed penalty notices will not be repeatedly issued against the same individual or organisation. THe issue of two such notices within the same six months will require the agreement of a relevant manager," he said.

Repeat offenders will be placed on a national database of rogue landlords to act as a warning to tenants and other councils.

THe committee also decided to bring a £100 fixed penalty notice for anyone who breaches a community protection notice.

THe notices are issued where unreasonable behaviour of a continuing or persistent nature has a detrimental effect on those who live in the surrounding area.

"THese community protection notices require the recipient to do something or not to something, such as cause noise that is audible at the boundary of residential premises," Mr Slade added.

THe notices would be easier to issue than the previous policy of persuing prosecution. But a breach of a notice is a criminal offence.

Students' survey of path finds dog mess and litter STUDENTS at Felpham Community College put their best feet forward to join a national walking challenge.

Co-ordinated by the college's student council and spearheaded by year 7, students in all key stage 3 year groups were encouraged to walk to school on March 11-15, as part of the Free Your Feet Challenge.

THe children taking part tracked how long it took them to get to and from school and handed in their tracker at the end of the week. Everyone who took part in the initiative was entered into a prize draw to win a £50 shopping voucher.

Following on from the week of tracking, a group of year 7 students completed a walking audit, looking at one of the difficult routes to school.

A representative from Living Streets completed this audit with the students, looking at the difficulties they may have on the journey and taking photo and video footage.

Year 7 leader Rachel Greenland said: “Our student council has been involved with a number of initiatives to help improve school and community life.

THis is a great example of our students getting involved to help improve the local environment and also encourage each other to get active and walk more.”

Two of the year 7 students who were involved, Tallulah Powell and Adam Francis, said: “We looked at one of the routes which students have highlighted as difficult – the pathway leading from Downview Road in Felpham through

to the pathway that links to the school grounds. We had to see what the hazards were and what could be done to make the pathway nicer and safer.

"We highlighted how overgrown some of the pathway was - how it was difficult to walk down in areas due to the bushes and stinging nettles.

"We decided that there should be a bin

for litter, and more than one dog mess bin as there was litter and dog mess down the pathway. It would be much easier to travel down if it was made wider by having the bushes cut back and would be more pleasant with no litter or dog mess.

"It is not just our students who use the pathway, primary school students and the local community use it a lot as well,

Bob inspires students A ROBOT named Bob inspired a group of Felpham students to achieve third place out of 13 teams in a schools' engineering competition.

Year 8 students at Felpham Community College Emma Barrasford, Aimee Clapperton, Megan Donohoe and Karina Lech were praised for the teamwork, communication, creativity and problem-solving skills they demonstrated throughout the Antweight Robot Challenge.

THe event was held at Ricardo, a global strategic engineering and environmental consultancy company based at Shoreham, on March 20, and was supported by STEM Sussex and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

STEM Sussex is run through the University of Brighton and aims to inspire future scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. FCC links in with it throughout the academic year for a number of trips and competitions.

THe challenge saw the teams put their design and engineering skills to the test by using various materials to design and decorate a robot, with

College careers leader Gill Woodman said: “Our students did a fantastic job, competition was high and to be recognised for their teamwork and creativity is outstanding. Everyone enjoyed the day and they were a credit to FCC with their enthusiasm.”

Emma and Aimee added: “It was a really good day. We used our imaginations with the robot and named him Bob.”

` Campaign backed A FELPHAM headteacher has supported a school's attempt to meet the government's education boss to demand more money.

Mark Anstiss, of Felpham Community College, said he was fully behind the bid by his counterpart at Billingshurst Primary School, Helen Williamson.

Ms Williamson has written to Damian Hinds, the secretary of state for education, to try to persuade him to a meeting to further the cause of the WorthLess? campaign.

Mr Anstiss has played a leading role in the efforts around Bognor Regis to boost funding for schools into keeping with the national average.

He said: "Felpham Community College supports the WorthLess? campaign and has been involved in trying to secure better funding for our school.

"We are pleased that other schools are involved in initiatives which help this joint cause."

As part of his involvement with WorthLess?, Mr Anstiss has taken part in a headteachers' protest march in London.

Ms Williamson has decided to approach Mr Hinds directly try to persuade him to discuss the funding crisis in schools around West Sussex.

"We are launching a campaign by sending Mr Hinds a letter each day from a child in the school," a school spokesman said.

"Currently, he may expect to receive 610 letters a day until he agrees to meet."

THe letter states the children are worried their school lacks the money to help them learn.

Winkhurst Tudor kitchen was the first building to be re-erected on the site when the museum was established nearly 50 years ago and is often used for demonstrations of cookery from that period. As with many of the other buildings, the lives of their original inhabitants are brought to life by dedicated volunteers and guides.

As well as more than 50 buildings, which include tradesmen’s workshops, a church and a market hall, and homes dating from medieval times, there is a working woodyard, horses and cattle to visit, nature trails and those all-important ducks to feed among many other displays and activities for all the family to enjoy throughout the year.

Cash for hub for homeless A MAJOR boost for services for homeless people and rough sleepers in Bognor Regis has come with the news of a grant of more than £180,000 for West Sussex County Council and charity Stonepillow.

THe £188,465 of capital funding, from Public Health England (PHE) will be used to redevelop and refurbish a purpose-built resource hub.

THis will be open to rough sleepers, people who are homeless or those who are vulnerably housed within Bognor Regis and the surrounding area.

THe work will involve the design and re-construction of the building, as well as the redecoration of the interior and refurnishing, with new equipment including items for a medical treatment room and IT suite.

Chief executive of Stonepillow Hilary Bartle and the board of trustees of the charity issued a joint statement welcoming the funding.

It said: “Stonepillow are very excited about the successful outcome of the PHE bid it submitted with support from West Sussex County Council to Public Health England.

"It will allow us to undertake the refurbishment and development required to deliver a resource hub in Bognor Regis “It will create a clear pathway for rough sleepers and homeless vulnerable clients with substance misuse issues to access alcohol treatment and receive medical and therapeutic interventions.

“We look forward to working with our partner agencies and clients in getting

this project up and running so we can get on and deliver an innovative multiagency service.”

Stonepillow will link the new service with its existing work at the Glenlogie day service in Clarence Road and the Ellasdale Road hostel.

THe charity opened the hostel last summer at a cost of £1.4m. It provides 16 individual en-suite rooms. Some can accommodate couples and people with dogs.

THe county council's director of public health, Anna Raleigh, said: “THis funding will allow us to support some of the most vulnerable residents in our communities, and I am very pleased that PHE has recognised the huge potential that this project has to have a positive impact on our residents’ lives.”

Charities such as Stonepillow and the county council have clashed recently over the council's decision to slash its funding for housing support services.

THe plight of rough sleepers around Bognor Regis town centre has also been a topic of debate among residents as the number of homeless people bedding down on the streets and in doorways has grown in the past few years.

Stonepillow sees high numbers of people who experience difficulties with their alcohol use.

PHE says people who are homeless or in temporary housing are often the most vulnerable in society. Many use alcohol to cope with life on the streets but they are also at greatest risk of experiencing alcohol-related harm and ill health.

Football club's goal is to help town charities stage functions CHARITY could be a big winner thanks to a new initiative at Bognor Regis Town FC. THe Rocks want to help charitable organisations around the town by offering to host events at its modern function venue.

THe move comes as the club looks to recruit a new manager for Seasons to oversee the running of the facility at its Nyewood Lane ground and to help embrace the local community.

It follows teaming up with homeless charity Stonepillow to host the Big Sleep Out in May. A club spokesman said: "THe link up with Stonepillow is a good example of

how the club is an integral part of our community. We want to reflect this further by talking to organisations who feel they could benefit from the venue we have. To make this happen, we first need someone to come in and take over the management of the venue.

"We're happy to listen to potential candidates who think they might have what it takes to run in the venue in practical terms but also have ideas on how we can grow Seasons through marketing and general awareness.

No matter what was going on, she was involved in it in some way or another.

"She voiced her opinions all the time.

She supported me at Arun District Council on many occasions when I was arguing about things for Bognor Regis.

"She was a real Bognorian and very proud of being the town's mayor."

THe funeral of Mrs Olliver was held at St Mary Magdelene Church in South Bersted on Tuesday. It was led by the Rev Tim Crook and the eulogy was given by the town council's clerk, Glenna Frost.

THe tribute, in the town hall's foyer, include events to mark the 75th anniversary in 2004 of the town's Regis suffix, her pride at being elected for her third term as town mayor, greeting a breakfast TV crew, posing with a wooden bathing hut and the standing ovation she received when she was made an honorary alderman of the district council.

It also contains one of the many poems she composed - Young At Heart.

VISITORS to Bognor Regis Town Hall can reflect on the life of the town's most prominent mayor.

Town council staff have compiled a pictorial tribute to the late Syliva Olliver to reflect her contribution to the life of Bognor Regis during three decades.

More than 70 newspaper cuttings and photographs show the range of events which Mrs Olliver, who died earlier this month aged 88, took part in during her unprecedented four full years as its leading citizen. THey were 1993, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Town councillor Pat Dillon, who was one of Mrs Olliver's fellow councillors on the town and district councils, said: "THis tribute is a brilliant way of letting people know what she did for this town over a number of years.

"Sylvia was an absolute diamond of a lady. I used to sit down and have a chat with her.

"She was a strong lady for the town.

Man may be near Torquay

` Waste site hours SUMMER opening hours will begin at the Bognor Regis household waste recycling site next week.

THe Shripney Road site will open at 8.30am from Tuesday until September 30 and stay open until 6pm.

But it will still remain shut on THursdays and Fridays.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council, which runs the site, said: "At this time of year, there is often an increase in traffic at the sites, so we have some top tips for getting the most out of trips to the site."

THese include visiting on weekdays, if possible, taking the first parking space at the site and seeking help to carry items to specific containers and pack cars in sections of items to help unloading.

THe toilets at Snooks Corner are set to close at the end of March as part of Arun District Council's strategy, which involves closing some toilets in order to refurbish others in key areas.

THe popular café on Felpham seafront is only a short distance from the Snooks Corner toilets at the Sea Road/Felpham Road junction.

THe community toilet scheme involves local authorities working in partnership with businesses to provide readily-available toilet facilities for visitors and shoppers.

More than 30 people will enjoy a free music lesson at Mikes Music Workshop for the UK's annual learn to play day.

THe turnout was the best the shop's owner, Mike Bosley, had known since he joined the initiative some five years ago.

"THe sponsors have been saying this has been the most successful of the days," he said, " and it went well for us as well."

THe most popular instrument for those who wanted to know how to play was the guitar. THis was followed by the piano and the ukulele. THere was also some take-up of the saxophone and flute.

"THe youngest person who came along was aged five and I would say the oldest was 70," he said.

A BOGNOR REGIS man who is missing was last seen boarding a train at the town's railway station on Tuesday, March 19, according to Sussex Police.

Andrew Britton, 54, was dropped off at the station around 11.30am and CCTV images show him apparently boarding a train about ten minutes later.

It is believed that he was planning to travel to the Torquay area of Devon and police in Devon and Cornwall have joined the search for him.

Club looks to future at its premises in the town as it celebrates its past MEMBERS of a Bognor Regis club celebrated the latest anniversary of a dream coming true.

Some 30-40 members of the town's RAFA branch took part in the special occasion at the club's present Waterloo Square premises, pictured right.

THe event was held 65 years to the week that the original club was officially opened in a former RAF Tangmere hut on open ground in London Road.

THe occasion was described by the former Bognor Regis Post as 'Dream Comes True'.

Press officer David Hewings said: "THe club is a very important part of what we do as a community charity and I know councillors recognise that as well.

"We want the community to use it more and we wanted to use the anniversary to highlight the club's existence."

THe branch's current base is a distinctive building, on the square's western side, and is also set to be improved as the branch looks to join with its national parent body to spend money on improvements, such as a new lift.

"We are putting together works that we want to see done here," said Mr Hewings.

"THey will make the building fit for the future so the club is here for many years to come.

"THe RAFA nationally is behind us on this. THey are very keen to invest in successful branches like this one."

Nick Bunting, the association's secretary-general, gave the club his backing during a visit last November.

THe Bognor Regis RAFA branch was

formed in 1945 but lacked a social club and hall until the former airfield hut was opened by the then leader of Bognor Regis Urban District Council, Cllr EM Bates, on March 16, 1954.

THe huts remained in use until 1972 when the Hotham Gentlemen's Club closed.

Far-thinking RAFA members realised its two-storey meeting place would be ideal premises. THey joined with the national body and took out a mortgage, quickly repaid, to buy it.

Bill Kelsey, chairman of RAFA's West Sussex region, remembers the huts in London Road.

Mr Kelsey, 93, served in the RAF between 1943 and 1947. He served in the Second World War as an air signaller with Lancaster bombers and followed that as a wireless operator.

He said: "We had 11 branches in West Sussex when I joined RAFA in June, 1946.

We used to hold meetings every other month in different venues.

"We used to go to the two wooden huts.

I remember them being in some trees around where the library is now.

"I recall one of the Bognor Regis members made plaques and used to decorate them with the squadrons' badges and put them on the walls. THey were quite remarkable.

"It was quite a step forward for the Bognor Regis branch to invest in these premises.

"It speaks well for the committee here that they have kept it going through the years and the success they

have had with it."

Branch member Irene Lorimer, 91, also has memories of the former huts.

"I've been a member for well over 60 years. I remember going to dances in the huts. I served in the WAAF for two years and my husband spent eight-and-a-half years in the RAF. "I come here quite a few weeks. It's very nice and everyone is welcome.

"It's nice to see so many people at events like this. I get to chat to people.

"We have new people coming in, who you get to know, and the familiar faces are here as well," she said.

THe branch has some 200 members who are former RAF personnel and about 600 associates, with either a personal connection to the air force or who enjoy the social activities.

THese include a choir, which has performed in Europe, and a skiffle band.

As a service organisation, the branch uses the club to raise money for welfare purposes. THis week has seen the branch awarded a branch efficiency certificate at the RAFA annual conference as well as being the only branch out of 90 in the south east region to gain a certificate for raising more than ÂŁ15,000 last year for the welfare fund.

THe branch is also an active backer of the RAF's 1310 Flight, currently in Mali in west Africa, originally based at the Second World War landing ground in Chlacraft Lane.

` Club drugs event ONE person was summoned to appear in court during a drugs operation in Bognor Regis.

Sussex Police's divisional licensing team carried out the preplanned event by teaming up with Sheiks nightclub on the town's pier on March 15.

THe police said 108 people were drug-wabbed upon entry into the club.# THis resulted in four drug seizures, one cannabis warning, one drug diversion, one community resolution drug referral and one summoned to attend court.

Cancer choir is set for debut

CHOIR members in Bognor Regis are getting ready to take on cancer in their first concert.

THe Cancer United singers will be making their public debut in Angmering this June.

THey will join with members of the charity’s more established Worthing choir for the appearance.

THe ten mainly women Bognor Regis singers rehearse from 3.30pm-4.30pm on Wednesdays at the Laburnum Centre in Bognor Regis under the leadership of their musical director, Andre da Silva.

Each of them wants to out sing cancer having either been a cancer patient, or are undergoing treatment, or have had relatives who had the condition.

One of the founding members, Bognor Regis resident June Hooper, 66, said: “THese rehearsals are enjoyable and fun,

and Andre is excellent. We also learn about music, which I’ve not done before.

“Singing is wonderful. It’s uplifting and there’s camaraderie between us. It really is a pleasure being here and you leave with a smile on your face.”

Her grandmother and partner have both had cancer in the past 10-15 years.

Middleton resident Kevin Motts, 65, said his grandmother and aunt had breast cancer.

“I’ve been here since the second week.

I was widowed last year and I wanted a place to come and joining the choir has been perfect," she said.

"It feels wonderful when we are singing.

As the weeks go by, it gets better because we are getting more confident and starting to sing as a group. We are starting to find our niches in what we are doing.”

Numbers have gradually picked up but Jan is looking for more. She started Cancer United after she was diagnosed with cancer to enable people affected by the serious condition to have positive activities on which to focus.

THe charity also runs fitness sessions at the Laburnum Centre.

She said: “It’s having the shared experience which makes all the difference to people. It is something they are going through together.

“We do talk about cancer but we don’t dwell on it and we want a lot more people to join us in Bognor Regis.

“Our Worthing choir has 50 members and we want to get up that number here.”

THe Worthing singers performed in about 14 concerts last year in return for donations. THey included a major company in Leatherhead, the Broadwater carnival in Worthing and twice in the John Lewis store in Chichester.

Andre began to learn the piano at the age of eight in his homeland of Brazil.

He came to England to study a degree in choirs at the University of Chichester before he qualified for a master’s degree in choral studies there.

A brief return to Brazil ended with his return to the university to undertake a PhD in the effect of music on people who have been diagnosed with cancer.

He said: “We are still studying the effects. But music uplifts the wellbeing of people who are in that situation.

“THey are so committed to coming and learning. THey come week after week after week,” he said.

Uni signs pledge to serve communities THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester has signed a civic university agreement to emphasise its commitment to serve the educational, economic, and societal interests of regional communities and West Sussex.

The agreement is a key recommendation in a report published by the UPP Foundation Civic University Commission.

It sets out how universities have the capability, opportunity, and responsibility to support places where they are based to solve some of their most pressing and major issues.

These issues range from helping local business adapt to technological change, to boosting the health of local people, improving education for school pupils and adult learners, and training and developing new civic leaders in every field from politics to the arts.

The report aims to help universities build on the excellent work that many of them are already carrying out in these areas, working alongside councils, employers, cultural institutions, schools

and further education colleges.

University vice-chancellor, Professor Jane Longmore, signatory of the agreement, said: “Universities are about more than providing first-class education and preparing students for their futures, although this is, of course, a vital part of what we do.

“Universities sit within their local communities and make huge contributions to them – from providing employment and opportunity to driving enterprise and the local economy, contributing to better health, offering support to community groups and enriching culture and regional character.

“We are delighted to have our own civic university agreement in place, which will underpin how we partner with and support the area we call home.”

The civic university agreement underpins a wealth of activity and partnership carried out by the University of Chichester in support of communities not just in Chichester and Bognor Regis (homes to its two campuses), but also across West Sussex.

Hospital's staff awarded prizes APPRENTICES from Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester captured several prizes at Health Education England’s Kent, Surrey and Sussex Apprentice Recognition Awards in March.

Winners from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust included healthcare assistant Shiralee Bacon (level 3 clinical apprentice award) sterile services apprentice office manager Lydia Taylor (level 2 non-clinical apprentice award) and trauma and orthopaedics support secretary Michael Brooks (level 3 non-clinical apprentice of the year).

Winner Lydia Taylor said: “The reception was a day I will never forget. I met so many inspirational and dedicated individuals, who endlessly devote their time to helping others. Within our trust, there are endless types of apprenticeships on offer and for anyone who is thinking

about applying for an apprenticeship, do it, they are, in my eyes, the best way to start a career.”

Western Sussex Hospitals was also named runner-up in the apprentice employer of the year category.

Currently, more than 100 staff at the acute hospital trust are learning and earning on apprenticeship courses. More than 300 colleagues have completed apprenticeships since 2015.

The trust’s apprenticeship lead, Jo Hauffe, said: “I am delighted that once again the trust has been recognised as a great organisation for apprenticeships.

I wish to congratulate our individual winners and runners-up who have demonstrated that apprenticeships are for available for all, regardless of role or age.”

` Council debt MORE than £460,000 owed to West Sussex County Council has been written off.

Fifteen debts, each over £15,000, were scrubbed by Jeremy Hunt, cabinet member for finance and resources, after efforts made to recover the money failed.

A council spokesman said the majority of the £460,734 debts related to ‘unrecovered meanstested contributions towards the cost of adult social care’.

Given the personal nature of the cases, no details will be made public.

The spokesman added: “In all cases, legal services have explored all available avenues to recover the debts and have factored in the economics of continuing to pursue, the inability to pursue due to expiry of the limitation period according to legislation and reputational risk."

Councillors have until today (Friday) to raise any objections.

If none is made, the decision will come into effect on April 1.

Council drops plans for two new farms PLANS for two solar farms in West Sussex have been dropped – but other projects are on the horizon.

Some £2,000 was spent looking at two sites, in Easthampnett and Hunston, near Chichester, to house the farms and battery storage, but neither will go ahead.

At a meeting of the county council’s performance and finance committee, members were told the Easthampnett site was too small, while there were grid capacity issues at Hunston.

Michael Jones (Lab, Gossops Green and Southgate) described the losses as ‘a great shame’, adding that the solar farms provided ‘great revenue’ for the council.

But the meeting was told that detailed feasibility work was being carried out at a site in Horsham Road, Crawley, while a closed waste site in Halewick Lane, Sompting, was at the planning/ business case stage of development, with a decision expected in June.

Both sites would be for battery storage, with Halewick Lane being the larger.

A spokesman said such live energy projects brought in more than £1m for the council coffers.

Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “It is one of those things that we know it’s a good thing to do, it’s providing energy and giving us a return.

“As long as the sun keeps shining, we know that the money will keep coming

in, so that’s all right.”

She added that a former waste site at Baystone Farm, Horsham, was being considered for use as another solar farm.

The spokesman said: “All of our capital projects are subject to detailed feasibility work and must have a robust business case.

“Income-generating energy projects are required to set out how they will repay the construction cost and deliver target revenue return.

“Given the scale and complexity of these projects, it is inevitable that some will prove to be less viable than others, once initial feasibility work has been completed.”

Explaining the problem at Hunston, he added: “Constraints on the local electricity grid – ie, inability to connect sufficient generation or battery capacity in a certain location due to the need for significant, timeconsuming and costly upgrade work – are a common reason why energy projects may not progress beyond the feasibility stage.

“At Easthampnett, there was not enough physical space to install a financially viable solar PV system [the cells used convert sunlight into electricity] due to the number of wayleaves, watercourses and services identified beneath the land.”

Hair-raising idea for college

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk HAIR students from Chichester College showcased their talent at a special ‘Dinner with Lee Stafford’ event.

Local salons were invited to the evening, held in the college’s 64 Restaurant, which saw them enjoy a three-course dinner cooked and served by catering and hospitality students.

Between courses, small groups of hair students presented their models as they showcased techniques they had learned, from twisted tong curls to hair up as well as colouring.

The students, a mix of apprentices and full-time students, are trained at the college’s Lee Stafford Education

Academy by the college’s team of lecturers who receive ongoing training and professional development from award-wining celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford and his team of experts.

Lee attended the evening, and was left impressed by the standard of work on show – both in the salon and in the kitchen.

He said: "It was a great evening, and created a real buzz with local employers. It was the kind of event that gives students something to reach for.

"I thought it was great seeing the students preparing – they looked so competent in the way they were working and they did an amazing job, especially considering some of them are only six months into their courses!

"The food and service was brilliant,

too. I think it was a real quality evening which just shows what a great job Chichester College is doing across the board."

Shelagh Legrave, chief executive of the Chichester College Group, was among guests at the showcase and she echoed Lee’s admiration.

She added: "I was very impressed by the standard of work on show. The hair students produced some outstanding looks, which really demonstrated their talent and commitment.

"And that was reflected in the superb dinner that our catering students served, which was delicious.

"All of the students and staff involved with the evening should be extremely proud of the high standards that they are achieving. It is inspiring to see."

Generations unite for 'nippers and slippers' NIPPERS and Slippers is the snappy title for an initiative which is uniting old and young at Eastergate C of E Primary School - and it's a big hit with all concerned.

Maureen O'Brien, who attends neighbouring St George's Church, and came up with the title, is one of the organisers of the termly get-togethers.

pupils at the school for a shared afternoon of storytelling and crafts.

Assistant priest at Eastergate church, the Rev Sheila Higgins, said the event, in the school hall, helped to forge links between the school and the parish.

On the most recent occasion, they were joined by four residents brought from Westergate House care home by their activity adviser, Philomena Woods, who said: "THis is a great idea. We're

loving it and hope to come again."

Her words were echoed by the school's headteacher, Catherine Ward. She said: "It is really amazing to see the generations coming together, especially in these days when family relationships are often lacking.

"It contributes to being part of the community, too. One old chap in the village who had been here couldn't stop talking about it."

Park boards go on show at site INFORMATION boards about a planned park in Bognor Regis have been installed.

THe panels detail the latest proposals for the Pavilion Park. THey have been put up around its proposed site of the Hothamton play area, car park and Sunken Garden.

Arun District Council gave itself planning permission for four of the boards to publicise the ÂŁ3.5m project.

THe council says on the boards: "We are excited to share our plans for this new and innovative modern park at this site.

"THe new park will be an attraction in its own right, and be a larger and higher quality public space than the current layout.

"It will be fully accessible to all, free to use and provide hours of fun for locals

and visitors alike, whatever the season."

THe park's attractions are listed on the boards as being a green oasis, a cafe, water play, creative play, an events space and car parking.

THe site will provide a restful area for relaxing amid beautiful planting, it is stated, with quality food and drink for customers seated inside and outside into the evening all year round.

THe water play will provide hours of fun for all ages, while landscaping and play equipment will capture children's imagination. THe events space can be used for games, events and markets and the parking will be landscaped.

Critics of the park, like Bognor Regis Civic Society, say it is smaller than the current garden on which the money should be spent.

Sir THere has been recent media coverage about roads around Bognor Regis.

Councillor Bower, the chairman of the Arun District Council development control committee, has intervened in this issue.

He has advised Chichester District Council that, if they are to build more houses in their area, they should ensure that there is sufficient local infrastructure to support such developments.

Wise advice - why introduce new residents to an area if the local infrastructure cannot support them?

Yet this is the same Cllr Bower who has presided over an Arun district committee that has recently granted outline planning permission to three developers to build 800 houses in Pagham village?

Another 300 houses are subject to a planning appeal. In granting these permissions, councillors have effectively ignored the 2,800

written objections that Pagham residents made to these developments.

Concerns included issues such as traffic stagnation, flooding, sewage disposal, loss of agricultural and wildlife habitat, lack of school places and lack of work opportunities.

None of these issues has been addressed. THe lack of school places and work opportunities will put ever more traffic on local roads and compound the problems in Chichester that Cllr Bower has highlighted.

I find that Cllr Bower has some gall to give advice to Chichester.

He should practice what he preaches and put his house in order before advising others.

f Bognor Regis Health Centre Sir, With reference to your edition of Friday, March 15, and the health centre, the photo included shows current improvement works being carried out to the building access, so why is this being done if the council intends to demolish the health centre? I live locally and would estimate the works carried out at about three weeks and counting and at what cost?

Also, why has the council commissioned new toilets on the seafront and opened them for several weeks before deciding they were not to specification? Surely, any new build would be checked before opening and not afterwards. Why has the council laid

sub-standard pavements around the town that pool water, especially near Iceland? Why did the council stop the Sunday market on the Hothampton site about two years ago, yet today it is still just a car park?

Finally, when I first arrived in Bognor in 2009, there was talk about regeneration and I believe consultants were involved which allegedly cost a lot of money.

Indeed, locals here have advised me that local regeneration has been going on for 40 years but nothing ever happens.

Perhaps we should direct the councillors here to take over the Brexit negotiations.

If it is, could I ask them to use the Arun District Council internet noise reporting form to try to get this machinery turned off at night or have some noise containment action taken.

IT'S THE heart of every home and one of the places we spend most time - cooking, eating, entertaining - and that's why a kitchen is so important to most of us.

Thinking about refitting or improving an existing kitchen is a big decision and nobody wants to make an expensive mistake they will have to regret with for years afterwards.

Sandra Daniells has lived in her 1930s detached home in Bognor Regis since 2005 and has been gradually getting round to changing the home to suit her style and needs. Being a house of that era, one of the areas definitely needing an update was the kitchen as it was far smaller than modern standards with little space for appliances or scope to include a table and chairs.

Finally fed up with the pokey and impractical conditions there and in the adjoining dining room, she had the internal walls removed, patio doors installed and a plastered shell prepared for a lovely new kitchen - and that was when frustration set in.

"We finished with a slightly unusual shape and I was really keen to have the usual wall and base cupboards plus an island unit but also to allow space for a table and chairs," she said.

"Fortunately, I had the use of a small annexe kitchen elsewhere in the house while the main kitchen was re-built so there was no particular time pressure but I thought it would be far easier to achieve my dream kitchen than it turned out to be.

"I set off around the area and visited half a dozen of the big kitchen showrooms in the Chichester and Bognor Regis area.

Other than wanting a modern look, I wasn't particularly choosy but I did like the idea of an island unit.

"Unfortunately, everywhere I went, I was told my new room would not be large enough for both a standard island unit and my preferred table and chairs.

"I gave up the search for a while but I decided finally to try an independent business and went to Freestyle for advice the contrast with the bigger firms couldn't have been more marked.

"The showroom was welcoming and straight away, I was reassured by the in-house professional designer that my requirements of an island unit and floor space could be accommodated by having a bespoke unit made.

"Added to which, the efficient and pleasant designer helped with decisions on all the details, such as choice of work surface and handle styles where previously, in the warehouse-type showrooms, I had felt stressed and anxious about making the wrong decisions," added Sandra.

A few weeks later, the custom-made quality pewter-coloured units were fitted by Freestyle's sub-contractor and, with their white Corian surfaces slightly sparkling in the spring sunshine, the kitchen's finished look continues to give her a smart, practical and attractive place to cook and eat.

Ralph Fiennes’ lovely, elegant The White Crow is an impressive, dance-heavy biopic that focuses on Nureyev’s childhood, training, and life-changing visit to Paris as part of the Kirov Ballet in 1961, culminating in the dancer’s decision to seek asylum in France despite the efforts of the KGB. Castle at the sharp end of history Combat at the Castle Saturday, April 6 - Sunday, April 7, 10am-3.30pm IN 1102, THE Earl of Arundel prepared his troops to defend against the first siege of Arundel Castle. Now, visitors can be transported back to this tumultuous time in a new adventure for families and history enthusaists alike.

With the forces of King Henry I approaching, archery and handto-hand combat were essential skills 900 years ago as the castle's first visitors of the year will be able to find out.

Combat at the Castle will feature crafts and weaponry, armour, combat and archery demonstrations. Visitors will also have the chance to learn about 12th century clothing and meet the garrison of soldiers.

With crafting and demonstrations throughout the day, visitors will be entertained from 10am–3.30pm, with an hour’s break at 1pm.

St John Passion by Bob Chilcott St Thomas a Becket Church, Church Lane, Pagham, PO21 4NU Thursday, April 4, 7.30pm www.chichestervoices.org.uk A CHARITY supporting families of service personnel will benefit from a performance of a modern setting of St John Passion by Chichester Voices.

It features two professional soloists, taking the parts of the Evangelist and Jesus, with a brass ensemble, viola, cello, timpani and Richard Allum at the organ. Andrew Naylor is coductor.

This is a beautiful, compelling piece employing a similar structure to the great Passions of J S Bach, in that the narrative, provided by the tenor Evangelist, is sung in an arioso style that gains momentum as the drama

unfolds. There are also five settings of Passiontide hymn texts which are designed to be sung by the choir and (optionally) audience/congregation together.

The choir sings four meditations, which punctuate various points in the drama, and plays the part of the crowd or a group of soldiers who comment from time to time in short outbursts. The work will be sung without an interval and lasts about

an hour.

The concert is being given in aid of The Ripple Pond, a charity which provides a self-help support network for the adult family members of physically or emotionally injured service personnel and veterans.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of THe Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: THursday, March 14 - THe return of the cold east wind and the absence of sunshine prevented the King from going out yesterday. He was up early and spent the day in his big room which looks over the sea.

His Majesty is able to read a little and to move about his room, but for some time he will have to take his airings in the bath chair which has been sent from Buckingham Palace for the purpose.

Princess Elizabeth arrived at Craigweil House last evening from London, with her nurse. It is expected she will stay at Bognor for some days, as the Duke and Duchess of York leave for Norway.

THe Queen drove to Petersfield yesterday afternoon, and paid a visit to Lieutenant-Colonel Turnour-Fetherstonhaugh at Uppark.

Friday, March 15 - THe temperature was again too low yesterday for the King to be able to go out. THere was a little sunshine in the early afternoon, but the air was kept cold by the east wind. Artificial sunlight treatment was administered to the King yesterday by Dr Howitt.

Princess Elizabeth, who is staying at Craigweil House while the Duke and Duchess of York are in Norway, saw the King again yesterday. Her presence gives the King much pleasure.

THe photograph of the King on his first airing in the grounds of Craigweil House, which was published in THe Times on Wednesday, was broadcast from Daventry experimental station on Wednesday night, and is reported to have been received on television sets by several hundred people in this country as well as by others in France, Germany and Austria.

CUSTOMERS have voted Arun District Council's local land charges team the best in the country for the third year in a row.

THe hat-trick of successes by the officers was achieved in the customer satisfaction award for local authority services in a national competition. THe accolade was announced at the 12th Land Data Local Land Charges Awards 2019 ceremony.

THe employees - Dan Carman, Carole Minto and Jayne Hewstone - were also highly commended in the local authority searches team of the year category.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said: "We are so proud of this team and the work that they do. To win an award for the third year in a row is amazing, but for that award to be voted for by our valued customers means so much.

"To also come second in another fantastic category is proof that the Arun District Council local land charges team is truly award-winning. THis is great recognition for the high level of service they offer."

THe national awards highlight and celebrate the achievements of local authority land charges departments, which carry out the land and property searches required for conveyancing transactions in England and Wales.

Solicitors and licensed conveyancers from around the country are asked to nominate and provide feedback on the local land charges team they believe is consistently committed to delivering a high level of customer service.

BREXIT will be in the prayers of visitors to the mother church of Bognor Regis tomorrow.

St Mary Magdalene Church is to mark a national prayer initiative to help to be a focus for reconciliation and unity around the contentious subject.

THe church, in Bersted Street, will provide an opportunity from 10am and midday for people to drop in and get together over a cup of tea or coffee and discuss the country's future.

THe church's vicar, the Rev Tim Crook, said: "We're offering a safe space for people to listen to one another where they can disagree without being disagreeable.

"We aim not to make anyone feel uncomfortable but will be providing various opportunities for prayer, either privately or together with others. Everyone is welcome."

THe weekend has been chosen because today was originally selected as the time when the UK would leave the

CAREERS from hairdressing to the high seas were considered

by Felpham Community College students.

A range of potential employers was present to provide details of work available to the pupils for their future careers.

THe varied and informative programme of activities was organised by the college's careers leader, Gill Woodman. It marked national careers week.

Mrs Woodman said: "THe government launched the statutory careers strategy in December 2017 and it has eight benchmarks schools have to work towards meeting by 2020.

"At Felpham Community College, we are well on our way to meeting all of the benchmarks.

"We offer a full and varied programme of events and trips for students across year groups throughout the academic year, which give information and advice on careers and career pathways."

Students were encouraged during the event to sign up to talks and presentations from a wide array of different careers.

THese included nursing, apprenticeships in gas, electrics and plumbing, the Royal Navy, hairdressing, construction, engineering and fashion buying.

THe University of Chichester also attended to give information on degree apprenticeships.

As well as the presentations, students took part in careerbased activities during their tutor time and careers were at the forefront of lessons. Students watched video clips and discussed different options and career paths.

"National Careers Week is a great opportunity to give students valuable information first hand, with visitors presenting on their careers with insight you cannot necessarily find on Google and with a chance for students to ask questions," said Mrs Woodman.

"THis year, the week has been really good. Most of the talks have been full and we had to run a number twice to accommodate demand."

National Careers Week is run as a not-for-profit company to promote the importance of good careers education in schools and colleges. It is backed by a number of volunteers with a wealth of experience from education, business and careers guidance.

COMMUNITY projects in Bognor Regis are being offered the chance to bag their share of a fund of almost £300,000.

Retailing giant Tesco wants to hand out the cash to community organisations and charities who are working to improve Britain's coastline.

THe money is being made available through a special round of the company's Bags of Help voting scheme.

Bags of Help, run with Groundwork, sees funding awarded to thousands of community projects each year.

Bognor Regis is one of 42 seaside towns during May and June whose customers at their main Tesco store will be invited to vote for coastal projects to receive up to £4,000.

A total of £7,000 will be available in Bognor Regis as more than 100 project across the country will have the chance to share some £290,000.

Alec Brown, Tesco's head of community, said: "We are very proud of the impact Bags of Help has had in communities across Britain.

"THe types of project supported could include life-saving, swimming safety, beach clean-ups, coastal paths, sailing clubs, clean water and protecting coastal wildlife, and we are very excited to see the range of organisations which apply."

Popular area dates from the Domesday Book But there will always be debate about how to say its name IN the past, I have provided talks to visitors to the town and have included a section on the village of Felpham. Of course, the irony is that it was recorded and mentioned long before Bognor was established. Some people just drive along the A259, through the village, on their way out of the area and do not actually visit.

THerefore, I thought I would take a look at the village. To be a village there should be a pub, a church, small shops, history and ‘picturesque cottages'. So far, so good as Felpham has all of these.

One of the first problems, however, is how do you pronounce the name of the village, is it ‘Fel-p-ham or Fel– f –am.’ I am, of course, aware there is as much discussion today on this subject as there has been for many years.

According to the publication ‘Place names of Sussex’, there were many mentions of the place, which appeared to mean ‘fallowenclosure'. One report in 1575 showed a spelling with ‘P,’ however, and it is shown as ‘Phelpham.’ I am sure that these discussions will continue well into the future.

It appears that in the Domesday Book it is shown as ‘Felcheham’ and was described as a ‘pleasant village and parish in the Western division of the county'.

According to the 1882 Sussex Directory, it shows that Flansham and Ankton (or

Ancton) are hamlets belonging to Felpham.

In 1882, the commercial part of the village records a grocer, shoemaker and post office, gardener, farmers, blacksmith, shopkeeper, miller, butcher as well as the various licensed premises – Fox, George, and Brewer’s Arms.

Census returns also provide an interesting view when in 1851 the population of the village was 479, with 92 occupied homes and just one unoccupied building. By the 1990s, the population had risen to approximately 9,000.

THe church is still the heart of the village and has been depicted on numerous postcards sent home by happy holidaymakers, including one person in 1907 who wrote on the reverse of her view of the church, ‘this is where Rev Talbot is now', and was sent to Haywards Heath.

In the Domesday Survey of 1086, a church was mentioned within the village, but this possible wooden construction has long since been lost in time to be replaced by today’s building. Felpham church commenced around 1100 and has had many extensions and additions throughout the years. Today, it is a busy centre of the village and a full written history of the church is available there.

THere is an incredible amount of history in the village, but people also make it notable.

commissioned by William Hayley to decorate his library. A famous case saw William Blake put on trial for sedition which took place at Chichester in 1803. Upon his acquittal, Blake moved back to London. Pictures of his cottage – Rose Cottage - in Felpham are shown on websites and in books to add to the interest visitors have shown in the village.

Cottages, while not quite so evident today after years of new buildings, can still be found, but perhaps they would not quite evoke the message sent to Beckenham on a postcard in 1912 which said, ‘this would suit you A1 down here there are such a lot of old thatch cots with grass growing on the roofs'.

If you take the time to look, there are many cottages remaining, with names and appearances that continue to reinforce our perspective of a village environment. Some of the cottages had such idyllic names as Pear Tree, Lavenham Cottage, and Vine Cottage. Many of these cottages are also listed buildings.

In 1929, there was a report in the local paper which talked about a ‘year of progress'. It remarks that Felpham was moving from a 'sleepy hollow' to an increasingly up-to-date seaside suburb. Another remark in this article would seem to remain true today, whereby ‘several local organisations were forging ahead ---- and that the ratepayers are starting to take an intelligent interest in matters that vitally concern them'.

Village alehouses have changed considerably over the years, both in the range of items they sell and their clientele, but they still serve visitors and residents alike.

THe George started out as an alehouse known as the St George & Dragon in 1705, however, this disappeared and eventually THe George came into existence around 1832. THe Fox, with its unusual inn sign, has a very long history, dating back to the 1790s.

THe THatched House dates from 1842. THe Brewers Arms was demolished in 1924, to be replaced by the Southdown Hotel. Eventually, the Barn in Felpham opened in 1972 and this was originally an old flint building that had been converted into a private residence in 1920. THere was once an alehouse, named 'THe Hero of the Nile', which was situated on the site of the present post office.

Visitors have come to the area for a variety of reasons, not least the children who arrived to stay at the Sunshine Home situated in the buildings opposite today’s Felpham Bazaar.

One child in 1912 wrote on their card sent to Surrey that they had ‘counted 14 windmills on their train journey’, such excitement and to stay near the sea as well!

As I mentioned earlier, many things make up a village, and it would appear that Felpham still retains many of these facets of village life. THe people who are involved in many of the groups and councils are still all working towards generating the ‘feel of a village'.

Many of the visitors in the last century recorded on their cards that they would ‘take a walk into Bognor’ or ‘we are going out for the day to Bognor.’ Visitors still arrive both to see the sea but also to enjoy the village atmosphere of an area mentioned in the Domesday Book, sitting next to the more famous Bognor Regis. Long may it continue.

QEII Cobras duo Wayne Wadsworth & Cliff Prior went one better than last year to lift the Tuesday Double In Double Out Darts league divisional pairs title.

The end of the season competition took place at the Newtown Social Club with 76 players involved,only four short of the record.

Last years winners Jack Danahar & Richard Ragless (QE2 Cobras) lost in the first round, leaving the field open for Wadsworth & Prior to make it through to the final against Roger Summers & Graham Hollis (Fishermans Joy).

As the seventh and fourth placed players in Division One, Wadsworth & Prior were firm favourites for the clash.

They showed their form from the start hitting a 160 in-shot before taking the first leg in just 20 darts.

Hollis hit back with a 160 of his own, then his partner hit 140. But Prior & Wadsworth kept in touch, taking advantage of missed out-shots to hit double top and take the second.

The big scoring continued in the third with all players hitting tons.

Big scores came from Wadsworth and Summers, but a 128 from Prior left it open for Wadsworth.

He went for double 8, needing all 3 he eventually hit the double, taking the leg,

the match 3-0, and the Division 1 Pairs Champions title for himself and Prior, above.

In Division 2 16 pairs took part, producing some excellent scoring in the early rounds.

Gary Blackwood (Legends 'X') and Ricky Clark fought off some tough competition to make it through to the final against Mike Few & Lee Passey (Lamb Orange).

The latter have been in good form all year, with Few making it into three finals this season and two for Passey.

The 'best-of-5 legs' Division 2 final saw Blackwood start hitting the scoring with a ton and 140.

Passey & Few were steady but missed a bullseye to take the leg, giving Blackwood another chance which he took.

The second leg saw Blackwood start with a 120 in-shot, and both he and Clark shared big scores to leave their finish.

An 85 & 83 from Few and a ton from Passey helped them catch up to have chances. As all players struggled to hit the double, it was Clark who eventually took the leg.

Leg 3 saw Few and Passey take charge with two tons on the trot, sandwiching an 81 from Passey. Then double trouble started again for everyone.

Eventually, Blackwood stepped up and with two darts hit double top to take the match, making himself and Clark, pictured below, the Division 2 champs.

'The Chi magic is back' as City look to get one over league leaders Cov THE Chi magic is back - that's the word from the Chichester City Ladies camp as they test themselves against bogey side Coventry United this weekend.

The Oaklands Park side had lost their way in recent weeks, stumbling to three league losses in a row - a run which all but ended their slim hopes of lifting the National Southern Premier crown.

Since then, though, third-place Chi have regrouped and found their groove, thrashing C&K Basildon 8-0 away before pushing local rivals Portsmouth Ladies all the way during a 3-1 defeat mid-week under the lights.

It's now onto the tough task of facing undefeated league leaders Coventry United in Daventry on Sunday (2pm).

But Chi coach Matt Wright, who managed the side for a number of seasons, says the club is back to where it should be - and anticipates they will take that feel-good spirit into the match in the Midlands.

Speaking about the Basildon win, Wright said: "I think anyone we had that week would have been a good game to have as mood in the camp was good, the players were on it, the atmosphere in the camp was really good and

everyone was absolutely buzzing to be back involved in the team. It was just unfortunate for Basildon it was them we were facing.

"It has been some of the best training sessions we have had in terms of fun and players are playing with smiles on their faces.

"We seem to have got that buzz back, we call it the Chi magic and it's a really good place to be at the moment."

Chi produced one of their best attacking performances of the season in an end-to-end match at Portsmouth in mid-week.

Two early free kick goals for Pompey ensured City were up against it. Jess Lewry halved the deficit in the first half - then missed two second half penalties to deny Chi the lead. Pompey wrapped things up late one.

Despite being much improved in recent weeks, Cov will prove to be a different test.

The Midlands side have been a thorn in Chi's side this season, defeating them in both the league and league cup this term.

Wright said "Coventry will be a massive test, it will be huge. We are confident we can go there and, with the application we have, we will give anyone a run for their money at the moment."

CHICHESTER RFC could secure their London One South status for another campaign with a positive result against Cobham at Oaklands Park tomorrow (2.30pm).

Blues have had a topsy-turvy campaign, struggling to find consistency, which has left them in the bottom half of the standings with just three games to play.

A bonus point victory against bottomside Hove last weekend helped drag Chi up to eighth in the table, 14 points above Tottonians, who are third-bottom.

Another win tomorrow against a Cobham side who are 11th and have lost their last four will guarantee their league status for another season.

Having picked up three wins in their last five, Blues will head into the match in front of their home crowd as warm favourites, with

Academy gets off to an exciting start BOGNOR RFC Academy has begun in earnest as 46 players and eight coaches attended a fun-filled day to kick off proceedings.

Programme co-ordinators Tom Spurle, Doug Millen and Rob Outen, supported by a large coaching team, put the players through assessment drills, focussing on key skills before a 60 minute trial match.

The initial assessment day is just the first phase of the 2019/20 Academy season.

It begins at the end of August with a four-day training camp at the prestigious Kelly College in Devon It will end in April with matches against Winchester at Allianz Park, home of Saracens, with the end of year awards dinner in the players lounge.

The Academy will run two teams in the Hampshire leagues as well as entering the Sussex colts and National Colts cup competitions.

Tom Spurle, one of the project co-ordinators, said: "With eight county players in the squad

--Bognor RFC have all but given up any hope of a top two finish in the Hampshire Premier after a surprising 19-10 loss at Eastleigh IIs last weekend.

The victory at Hove was built on a strong forwards display. Despite falling behind to an early try, scores from Josh Cameron and Tom Blewitt put Blues in control.

They did not let up, with the returning Chris Johnson adding a third after crunching through a number of tackles.

Callum Cone wrapped up the bonus point after a dart down by the blindside before Ed Bowden broke from his own half to put Chi 31-5 up at the break.

Into the second period and the hosts started strongly once again, scoring their second try after a period of sustained pressure.

Blues responded with Rhys Thompson finding a gap in the Hove defence before Baz Magda rounded off the scoring.

A DEJECTED Rocks side much "dust themselves down" and go again - that's the message from coach Robbie Blake as Bognor look to revive their fast fading playoff hopes.

A depleted Nyewood Lane side produced one of their worst performances in recent memory last weekend when they were defeated 4-0 to Leatherhead.

A trip to fourth-bottom Wingate & Finchley tomorrow (3pm) is perhaps on paper the ideal test for the Rocks to bounce back and end a run of six league matches without a win.

But the North London side have found their form in recent weeks, defeating Harlow Town 7-2 then winning 4-2 at home to Potter's Bar. This cruel coincidence was not lost on the affable Blake, who shrugged off any suggestion it would be an easy match.

The Rocks coach said: "It's not when we've conceded seven in two and they've scored 11 in two. It will be a tough game. Every game in this league is tough, it doesn't matter if you're playing the side who are top of the league or the bottom of the league. We have to dust ourselves down and see what happens."

There were very few plus points to take from the 4-0 thrashing to the Tanners.

A long range shot gave the visitors the lead halfway through the first half before a second was added just before the beak when Rocks could not clear the ball from the box.

It stayed that way until the 77th minute when Keaton Wood slipped to allow the Tanners in for a third. A fourth was added late on, dropping Bognor to 11th, eight points off Worthing in the final playoff spot.

Blake said: "We're a dejected, feeling-sorryfor- ourselves team and a shadow of the team we were early on.

"We have lost a lot of players, such as the likes of Jimmy Muitt and Dan Smith and when you take 40 goals out your team, I don't care what level you're at, you'll be weakened.

"If you look at since they [Muitt and Smith] have gone, we haven't won a game."

Rocks will have some selection dilemmas for the trip to Wingate.

On-loan Portsmouth keeper Petar Durin and regular stopper Dan Lincoln will be fighting it out for the number one shirt.

Striker Reece Myles-Meekums, who is on loan from National League Bromley,and promising left-back Ashton Leigh, who signed from Wessex Premier's Baffins Milton Rovers, are also both set to feature after starting against the Tanners.

Blake praised their effort but added: "How many of our players do I trust out there? There are not enough at the moment. Our injuries are nothing short of ridiculous and when you are bringing players in at short notice it's tough to get that cohesion,that's just facts."

Wood's back from 'worst time' IT was one of the Rocks' worst defeats in recent memory. And while the result was hard to take for all the squad, one player had a little bit of silver lining.

After nearly six months out, Keaton Wood is back in the white and green of Bognor.

It seems a long time ago since the defender limped out of action in September in the 2-2 draw at Potters Bar Town on an uneven pitch.

After months of being nursed back to health and a lengthy rehabilitation period, the former Dartford central defender has played the full 90 minutes in the last two Rocks matches.

Despite the club conceeding seven goals including one which he was directly to blame for -Wood is pleased to be back playing.

In an interview with the club's programme, Wood said: “This injury has been the worst time of my football career to date really.

"It’s been a very long time since September and I’ve personally had a lot to deal with in the time.

"However, it’s been great watching the boys do really well but it has also been hard knowing that I could possibly affect things on the pitch if I had been playing alongside them."

DEFLATED - I think that's the word that sums up how I felt after last Saturday's result It always will be a tough task to get up to where we want to be in the table without certain players we have out at the moment.

But, while I can accept losing a game to a team that is better than us, the way we did it last weekend against a side who are basically in the same position as us in the league was unacceptable.

With 20 minutes to go, a number of our players just seemed to give up.

That is not acceptable at any level of football. It's even worse when we are being paid to do a job.

The 4-0 result was a surprise.

All the time we were one or two down I thought we had a chance.

But as soon as the third went in, the match was over.

At that point, it's up to us as players to keep going and not throw in the towel.

For the three young lads making their home debuts for the club it was a bit of a baptism of fire.

As a team though, I think we gave a very lightweight performance and we just got bullied from start to finish.

It's up to individuals to now decide where we go from here.

My attitude will not change - I want to win every single match I play in, there's no point playing otherwise But whatever level of the game you are playing at, you will need a minimum of nine players on the pitch that want to win. We just not have had that in recent weeks.

Jack summed it up at the start of the game when he said lot of other clubs would have had a manager get the sack, given the pressure he is under from the fans.

I don't think changing Jack is an option as you will not find a better person than him to do the job.

It's incredibly tough to find

the players with the money they want to come and play here.

There are not enough local players good enough for this level in this area who you can get along to the training.

And when there are other clubs like Moneyfields, Gosport and Worthing who are offering decent money, it makes the task even tougher.

Something has to change and it is up to us players who are paid money to go out there and play to give more.

Tomorrow sees us visit Wingate who up until recently were struggling at the wrong end of the table.

Now they have picked up a couple of wins - that always seems to happen to us for some reason!

I'm not sure how it works but every time we play a team they always seem to be picking up form.

They will be a typical London side who will be physical and have a good tricky wingers.

We have got enough to beat them but we need to be there together as a team.

While we still can make the playoffs, it's going to be tough.

We probably need to win all of our matches but looking at who we have to come, such as Dorking away, then it will be difficult.

We have got a good enough team but we just need to fight together as one.

We have to be braver to get on the ball and get about our opponents to put them under pressure.

If you look at the game against Worthing, we were a completely different side.

Whether that was because it was a local derby or in front of a big crowd I don't know but we need to be like that every game.

We go again tomorrow but we can't go again like that.

If we do, then perhaps we need to think about giving the money we're earning back to Jack to buy the fans a beer.

Poor Pagham must improve PAGHAM'S bid to end one of their worst run of forms in recent memories sees them welcome high-flying Saltdean United to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm).

The Lions have had plenty to shout about in recent seasons, with free flowing football seeing the side fighting for the top spots in the SCFL Premier.

At Christmas, it was business as usual for Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen's side.

But injuries, combined with losing key personnel to other sides, have seen Pagham plummet into the bottom half of, with the Lions winning just twice since the festive break.

Lions thought they had secured a morale-boosting 2-2 draw against AFC Uckfield Town last weekend when Jamie Horncastle equalised with ten minutes to play.

But the visitors struck twice late on, with Johan van Driel seeing red late on to compound Pagham's woes.

That loss makes it four defeats on the spin for the Lions - and next up are the Tigers of Saltdean.

Sitting fifth, they have won four of their last five, meaning that Pagham's young side will

need to dig deep if they are to emerge from the battle of the big cats with all three points.

In SCFL Division One, Sidlesham are seeking their first win in four to boost their hopes of a top half finish.

Sids welcome secondbottom Midhurst & Easebourne to the Rec Ground tomorrow (3pm) looking to bounce back from a 1-0 loss at Storrington.

Fifth-place Selsey, meanwhile, will have a week off, hoping that other sides can do them a favour as they remain in the hunt for a top four spot.

Blues kept up their end of the bargain last weekend, defeating Midhurst 3-2.

First half goals from Lindon Miller and Ryan Morey looked to have put Daren Pearce's side in the driving seat.

But two goals for the hosts in three panic-filled minutes before the break pinned Selsey back before Miller struck again to seal the victory with 20 minutes to go.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham rounded off their campaign with a 5-1 loss at home to champions-elect Rustington. Nick Edgington scored for the Robins.

ROCKS first team coach Robbie Blake is refusing to give up hope that a playoff spot is out of the club's grasp - despite Bognor sitting eight points off the pace with just six games to play.

The Nyewood Lane side have slumped to 11th after being thrashed 4-0 at home to Leatherhead last weekend.

With a trip to in-form Wingate & Finchley coming tomorrow, the Rocks management team believe that the club still has an outside shot at making the top five.

But they warn the club must improve dramatically if they are to end a run of two months without a league win.

Speaking to Rocks Radio, Blake said: "It's not gone until it's gone but we have given ourselves a mountain to climb "We need to roll our sleeves up and this will be a test of character as to what we're all about: do we want to flit around mid-table and finish on a bad note?

"Or do we want to roll our sleeves up, take one game at a time and see where the season takes us?"

Rocks last won back on February 9 when they defeated AFC Hornchurch 2-0.

City close in on league crown CHICHESTER CITY are within touching distance of their first county league crown for nearly 40 years and playing at step four of non-league football for the first time in their 146-year history.

The Green and Whites last won the SCFL Premier title back in 1979, well before the merger with Portfield.

But after last weekend's 3-1 win at Lingfield, Chi are now ten points clear at the top of the table with just five matches to play.

Miles Rutherford's side, who are unbeaten in 19 league matches, can take a giant step forward towards their promotion goal tomorrow when they head to relegationthreatened Shoreham (3pm).

Win and Chi will be need just one more win to be mathematically confirmed as the best team in the division, something that many believe has been the case for a number of

months now.

Rutherford's side showed their credentials last weekend when they had to come from behind to beat surprise-package Lingfield.

They fell behind half way through the first period when Chris Ransome capitalised on a slip from Terrell Lewis and lobbed City keeper Ryan Young.

A triple substitution at the interval was instrumental in the league leaders’ turn of fortune.

Rutherford re-jigged things at the back and in midfield, introducing Rob Hutchings, Kaleem Haitham and Emmett Dunn for George Way, Matt Axell and Lewis.

Within a couple of minutes or so the bold move paid off when Haitham lashed in the equaliser after good feet and a precision pass from Gicu Iordache.

Chi thought they had taken the lead

soon after when Connor Cody's effort was disallowed for offside.

Josh Clack then followed in a Scott Jones effort to bag his 14th goal since October.

Iordache made it 3-1 in stoppage time, drilling a shot in at the near post for Chi's 89th league goal of the campaign and a sixth consecutive premier division victory.

Newhaven, in third, lost further ground after a 0-0 draw at home to Broadbridge Heath.

They are now 13 points behind with a game in hand while second place Horsham YMCA are ten points adrift.

Chi will be the firm favourites to continue their good form at Shoreham tomorrow against a side who are bottom, three points from safety.

City defeated the Musselmen 2-0 in the reverse fixture in December when Iordache and Ellis Martin scored second half goals.
