"Accordingly, the council has concluded that it is unwilling to accept the structure as delivered and installed and has written to the supplier requesting they remove the toilets at their expense by the end of February.

"THe supplier may, of course, dispute this," he said.

"As before, the WCs will remain open in the meantime so there is no loss of

service to the public and the WCs are safe to use."

Cllr Hitchins said the situation was unexpected. "It came as a surprise to me, definitely the two ward councillors and other members of both the (Bognor Regis) regeneration sub-committee and the working group.

Mocks give taste of summer exams MOCK exam celebrations have been enjoyed by Felpham Community College students.

THe GCSE results presentation for the trial tests was held by the college to enjoy the hard work they had put in to get to that stage and motivate them for the final two terms before they sit the exams for real this summer.

Students were nervous before the presentation ceremony and were about to open their results with the support of their form tutors, year leader and year manager.

Interim reports went home the same day, last Wednesday, to their parents. THe final Year 11 consultation evening took place the next night for parents to have the chance to raise any questions.

THe combination of the events proved a valuable opportunity for students, teachers and parents to identify areas for students to work on and motivate them for the final run-up to their GCSEs. Tom James, the college's Year 11 leader, said: "We wanted to make Year 11 students aware of how little time they have left to complete their GCSE education - only 70 school days left until exam season officially starts!

"Mixed emotions have been on show at the presentation. We want all students to use the mocks as an opportunity to identify what they now need to focus on.

"We made the presentation ceremony, and the exams, as 'real' as possible to give students the final support and push they need to achieve the best they can.

"THe work they put in from now on can shape their future."

THe mock exams took place at the end of last term. Preparations started last October. THese included after-school revision sessions and at home revision programmes.

Teachers wanted students to experience exactly what the fast approaching summer GCSE exam season would be like and the level and effort students would be expected to complete. THe pupils planned, revised and worked hard.

All exams were completed in strict exam conditions, with the exam timetables being distributed to parents and students in November.

One of the students involved was Maisie Rishman, of Year 11. She said: "I did a lot of revision for the exams. THe after-school revision sessions are good at school as they bite-size different topics each week.

I passed all subjects. My maths grade is much better than I thought it would be, which is great.

"THe mocks have taught me that I need to revise for all subjects and not just focus on the ones I enjoy."

Her fellow student, Tierney Cox, also in Year 11, said: "I got a 9 for psychology which I am really pleased with and 7s and 6s for everything else, which is good.

"I want to go into the sixth form to do A levels and, although I didn't find the mocks stressful, it has been good preparation for what is to come in the summer and how we need to stay focused."

Friends' groups get together to help those with dementia DEMENTIA awareness around the Six Villages was raised at an information session in Walberton.

A number of Village Friends clients and volunteers attended the event by Dementia Friends and hosted by Peter and Cheryl Rolt.

THe management team for the soon to open Walberton Place Care Home are helping to ensure as many people in the area as possible are informed about dementia.

Peter said: "THis was a most useful and informative session and, while Village Friends does not provide a dementia care service, the event

provided volunteers with a better understanding of the condition and of the challenges faced by both sufferers and their carers."

Village Friends is a good neighbour scheme that was started more than 20 years ago to try to meet some of the needs of lonely, mainly elderly and sometimes housebound, people in the Six Villages area.

Volunteers visit them in their homes for a chat and, possibly, a cup of tea on the basis of being a good neighbour.

Meg Brackley, who chairs Village Friends, thanked everyone for attending last week's session.

Students spread word of Holocaust horrors

f Niamh Kirk and George James NIAMH KIRK swapped Bognor Regis for concentration camps on her 17th birthday.

Her desire to find out more about the Holocaust in the Second World War saw her forego celebrations on her big day for a sobering time at two of Europe's most infamous sites - Auschwitz-Birkenau.

She was one of two six formers from THe Regis School who spent a day seeing the reality of the darkest of periods in history.

She said: It might have been my birthday but it was definitely worth going."

She and her fellow student, George James, 16, have returned to educate others about the need to ensure the Nazis' determination to wipe out entire groups of their population is never repeated.

THis will include project time to mark Holocaust Memorial Day this Sunday to bring home the lesson of inhumanity to the school's pupils.

"We are going to ask the students to draw their rooms at home and compare them with photos of rooms in the ghettoes in the war and also rooms in the concentration camps," said Niamh.

"THey can then see what life was like for the victims of the Holocaust. She and George applied to become this year's Holocaust ambassadors at the school as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust's ground-breaking work.

THey were joined by the school's head of sixth form, Connie James, and began with a visit to London to learn about prewar Jewish life. THey were also privileged to listen to a Holocaust survivor with his powerful and inspiring words.

Next was the trip to the camps in Poland with hundreds of other students. THis was followed by a seminar and will end with their school project.

A-level student George said: "It was a very emotional day. It was hard to say what it was like because it's not something I've ever experienced before. Some of the things you see are so harrowing and moving. We did learn in GCSE history that the Holocaust happened but not why it happened. But I wish Auschwitz had not become so commercialised."

Niamh, who is studying for a Btec Diploma, has watched countless internet videos about the Holocaust and wanted to see the camps to find out more.

"In one word, it was harrowing. At one point I became really upset because it was so immersive. Everywhere you looked you were reminded of the Holocaust," she said.

"Going there has made me much more aware of what people are saying.

"Some make jokes about the Holocaust.

TOWN councillors have formally criticised plans for the new planned park in Bognor Regis.

In a rare move, they have sent an open letter to Arun District Council to reflect the views of those electors at a meeting last November.

Town clerk Glenna Frost has told Arun's chief executive, Nigel Lynn, that Bognor Regis Town Council's members wanted more efforts made to seek the views of the public about the £3.5m scheme for the Hothamton car park, off Queensway, and adjoining Sunken Garden.

She said the town council felt 'disappointment and dissatisfaction' with the proposals for the linear park.

She wrote: "...the council resolved that this 'open' letter should be sent to you, demanding that in light of the public feeling expressed to the council, a proper and public consultation on the linear park plans be carried out by Arun District Council prior to the submission of any planning application for the site.

Mrs Frost sent the letter on Monday after the electors' meeting resolution to oppose the plans by Arun to build the linear park was backed by town councillors at a meeting this month.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: "THe funding will kickstart a major refurbishment of this treasured heritage structure.

"THe bandstand's seafront location and historic nature means this is expensive work. But this is a big first step towards seeing the bandstand completely renovated."

Later work will see the roof renovated and concrete floor and brick plinth replaced with better suited materials.

` Homes decisions YESTERDAY'S decision by Arun District Council completes the approvals of the proposals for its three strategic housing sites in Pagham.

THe applications are for a maximum of 980 homes to be built before the council's local plan period of 2031.

THe first of the proposals to be approved by councillors were Hanbury (PM)'s for up 400 dwellings on land south of Summer Lane on October 24.

Next, on November 15, came a scheme by Taylor Wimpey for a potential 280 homes north of Sefter Road.

Both were approved by the council's development control committee by just two votes in front of packed public galleries at the Arun Civic Centre.

THe first meeting became so heated it was unexpectedly suspended by its chairman.

THe sites were included in Arun's local plan land use blueprint when that was approved last summer after it had been subjected to a public inquiry in autumn 2017.

THe local plan sets a target of 1,000 homes a year to be built on average between 2011-2031 if Arun is to keep up with the government's calls for more new homes.

THe Pagham schemes have prompted a fierce reaction from the area's residents and led to the creation of the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (Pagam) pressure group.

It has held several packed public meetings and well-attended events to focus opposition to the housing.

Homes boost for busy road HUNDREDS of new homes in Yapton will pay for about £1.5million-worth of road improvements in the area.

Councillors have approved two adjoining outline proposals for 550 dwellings in the village. THe developers of the sites in Blisham Lane and east of Drove Lane have combined to provide a package of measures to ensure the additional traffic does not worsen road conditions.

THe main priority would be to alter THe Oystercatcher junction of Yapton Road and the A259, they were told by county highways team manager Steven Shaw.

THis is likely to see a roundabout installed, though studies are continuing into the best option.

THis will receive £1m. Comet Corner will be in line for almost £650,000 towards changes. A cycleway between Yapton and Barnham railway station is to receive about £81,000. Four possible routes are being considered.

THe Bilsham Road scheme will see up to 250 homes built on 11.6 hectares by housebuilder Gleeson Strategic Land.

Arun District Council development control committee's acting vice-chairman, Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: “I am aware of people's feelings about these applications, I know they are strong and well-founded as they don't want to see the village overtaken with large and new developments.

“I, of course, as a life-long resident of Yapton have similar feelings. However... development is unavoidable. I am pleased that Yapton Parish Council in accepting that principle, although with reservations,

have suggested certain requirements and conditions to mitigate the impact on the village.”

He said he was also pleased the two schemes would lead to an enlargement of the existing primary school, with developer funding, rather than the original proposal of a second school to create a split site teaching environment.

But he said he had two big concerns. “I believe Comet Corner should take priority over THe Oystercatcher, especially as the proposed development on to Bilsham Road will take vehicles directly to Comet Corner. Turning right there is extremely dangerous,” he said.

He also believed the £270,000 to boost GP provision at THe Croft surgery in Eastergate should go to the intended new primary care scheme in Yapton.

Adam Ross, Gleeson's planning agent, told the committee on Wednesday the spending on infrastructure was the result of the councils, residents and developers working together.

“THe challenging but collaborative approach adopted by all parties has produced a high quality proposal for this site which makes provision for key infrastructure improvements.”

THe proposal saw 126 letters of objection submitted to Arun. THe reasons included the loss of farmland, and drainage and traffic fears.

THe committee's unanimous decision is subject to the signing of the legal agreements for the funding between Gleeson and the relevant authorities.

Pagham plan defeated over worries about traffic safety FEARS about road safety saw a scheme for 300 homes in Pagham rejected.

THe members of Arun District Council’s development control subcommittee overturned their officers’ recommendation to back the outline proposal because they were worried extra traffic generated by the housing would worsen conditions on Pagham Road.

THey said this would worsen the road’s existing congested conditions and increase the risks to motorists and cyclists.

THe mitigation measures put forward by the developer, Hallam Land Management, were not enough to overcome the concerns. THe reason was agreed by 11-3, with one abstention, to leave the council facing the risk of an appeal by Hanbury to a planning inspector.

Cllr Dawn Hall (C, Pagham) said a recent independent road safety audit failed to convince her the additional traffic could be absorbed safely.

“I object strongly to another access on to Pagham Road. I know we are taking mitigation measures to improve access on to the road. “But we are creating another one, which will cause even more problems.

“It’s all been said before. We know exactly what the problems are with the road, with Pagham and with the accesses.

THis development will just exacerabate the problem," she said.

“We have to remember that Pagham is a holiday place. It’s extremely important because of the nature reserve.”

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey), a Pagham

resident, said: “I concur with Cllr Hall on all the issues she has spoken about because I have raised them.”

Cllr Elaine Stainton (C, Felpham W) said the audit did not seem to have changed the situation about the conditions of the road. “THe infrastructure worries me deeply,” she said. “We all know that road, how dangerous it is. THe last four weeks before Christmas we had accidents there.”

Cllr Barbara Oakley (C, Middleton) said: “I share the reservations expressed by the previous speakers.

"I still don’t think we have solved the road issues which are extremely serious in this application.”

Wednesday's meeting of the committee was the third time the proposal had been on its agenda.

THe first saw it fail to be debated after the meeting last October was suspended by its chairman. THe following meeting, a month later, ended with councillors voting for the road safety audit to be held.

At the latest meeting, David Easton, one of Arun's planning officers, said a more detailed road safety audit would be carried out if permission was granted.

Committee member Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham) said "THe road safety audit has been to the local highways authority and they see no problem with it. THey agree with the accesses to and from the site.

"THe problem regarding highways appears to be existing highways problems and these cannot be affected by this application."

Horse sanctuary blow A TIED vote left a Pagham housing scheme on a knifeedge.

THe outline proposal by developer Domusea was given the go-ahead after senior Arun District Council member Cllr Ricky Bower used his casting vote in its favour. Arun's development control committee members were tied 7-7, with one abstention, before their chairman, Cllr Bower, broke the deadlock.

THe decision will mean the popular Pagham Ponies sanctuary will lose its home of the past 12 years in Horns Lane.

But it is subject to a deadline of next THursday for comments on amendments to the proposal for up to 65 homes.

Any comments received will be considered by Cllr Bower along with his top planning officers before they give the final approval.

Nigel Mundy, the founder of Pagham Ponies, told the committee's meeting on Wednesday said: "I know this site better than anyone else around. Such development must not, and should not, happen here for many reasons."

THe land was a wildlife haven. Species such as kestrels, little owls, lizards and hares could often be seen there.

"All this amazing wildlife will be destroyed. Once it is lost, it is lost for ever," he said.

Moving the sanctuary would cause some of the horses and ponies to be put down because they had become so familiar with the site, he said.

Cllr Peter Atkins, of Pagham Parish Council, said the site was close to Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

Too little land was being set aside for Brent geese to forage, of which 2,380 had been seen recently.

THe homes would also lead to more traffic using Pagham Road, he said.

Cllr Dawn Hall (C, Pagham) said: "I've always had some difficulty with this particular planning application. THere are so many things wrong with it.

THis is getting close to the nature reserve."

Paul White, for Domusea, said the scheme was coordinated with a larger proposal by Hanbury on an adjoining plot of land.

"THe two sites effectively read as one," he said.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said it was important toilets were open all year round.

"It gets very busy down there on sunny days during the winter, not just in the summer."

After the meeting, Bognor Regis town councillor Jeanette Warr said the situation was the latest chapter in a sorry saga.

"THe situation with the toilets is dire. We have told Arun time and time again the design is not in keeping with Bognor Regis. THey have not listened to us at all," she said. "THe town relies on tourism for a major part of its income.

"Arun are certainly not helping that by having temporary toilets again.

"THe toilets that have been there are totally inadequate. THere is not enough of them and the design is unsatisfactory. People here don't like unisex toilets either."

She has asked Arun for a detailed breakdown of its costs in knocking down the former foreshore office to make room for the toilets, refurbishing a hut for the new office and the design and installation of the latest toilets.

It was in July, 2017, that Arun revealed the design for the toilets, with a £200,000 budget for them.

Councillors put off granting planning approval for them two years later because of the opposition to the plans. THey gave permission last January but the loos were not opened until October.

Concern at litter on banks of rife A LITTER-STREWN site in Bognor Regis and Bersted has angered an environmental campaigner.

David Meagher said the amount of rubbish on the banks of the Aldingbourne Rife as it passed under the A29 Shripney Road was a disgrace.

"I am concerned with the amount of plastic that is on the banks.

"THat could end up in the sea and eventually be eaten by marine life.

"I am getting a bit frustrated with the situation. I reported this to the Environment Agency last summer and nothing has happened."

Mr Meagher staged a successful event at the nearby Tesco store last month to encourage shoppers to hand over any unwanted plastic.

He first raised concerns about the amount of rubbish thrown on to the rife which flows north of Tesco and south of

Ex-councillor is spared jail A FORMER Bognor Regis town councillor was told by a judge he had no excuse for making indecent pictures of children but was spared prison.

Daniel Barnes, 40, who was a serving officer in Sussex Police during some of the four-year period when the offences occurred, was arrested at the Bognor Regis home he then shared with his partner in October, 2017.

At Worthing Magistrates Court last December, he admitted six charges relating to indecent images from the internet and, because of the seriousness of the charges, was sent to Portsmouth Crown Court for sentencing.

He pleaded guilty to: making an indecent photograph of a child, one category A; making indecent photographs of a child, four category B; making indecent photographs of a child, 180 category C; possessing a prohibited image of a child, 23 images; distributing an indecent image of a child, three category C images; possessing five extreme pornographic images involving an animal.

Barnes, who sat in the dock with his head bowed throughout the crown court hearing on Friday, was told before sentencing by Judge Roger Hetherington that he took the point made by defence barrister Richard Wormald that vast quantities of photographs were not involved and only one was in the worst category A. Feast of musical treats awaits club TALENTED Susan Legg will take Bognor Regis Music Club members on a whistlestop tour of the tunes that have played an important part in her life.

THe mezzo soprano, pianist and composer will perform piano solos by Sinding, Rachmaninov and Ravel, piano duets by Dvorak and Clifford Benson, as well as songs and arias by Bizet and Greig among others.

She will be performing at 7pm tomorrow at the club's concert room, 2 Sudley Road, Bognor Regis Club chairman Chris Coote said: "We are privileged to welcome Susan to our club and are looking forward to a feast of musical delight.

"I am particularly looking forward to Susan's own composition for piano duet, Suite for Clifford, written as a tribute to her teacher, the late lamented Clifford Benson."

Since winning the National Mozart Singing Competition, Susan's flourishing career has taken to major venues worldwide.

Her specialism of contemporary song has seen her broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and Norwegian Radio.

She has given vocal and piano recitals at famous venues like Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room as well as performing at the Glyndebourne, Bayreuth, Wexford and Aldeburgh festivals.

Her soundtracks for film, TV and video games has included co-writing the music for THe Impressionists - And THe Man Who Made THem in 2015.

She also recorded all the piano tracks for the film I, Claude Monet and her voice featured on the film score for Renoir: Revered and Reviled.

Entry to her concert is at the door - £9 members, £11 visitors and £5 students.

Show is hit despite fall PANTO performers in Climping ensured the show went on after one of them broke both hips.

One of the leading ladies in the Nineveh House Players' production of Hansel and Gretel had the accident about a week before opening night earlier this month.

Pamela Day fell and suffered the serious injury to leave the show's producer, Trevor Wyatt, with a problem.

He had to enlist another woman to fill her shoes at the last minute.

It was a case of job done as the replacement rapidly learnt her lines and the role she unexpectedly took on.

THis was the ninth panto the players, who are the main traders at Nineveh

House in Arundel, had presented with the help of friends and supporters.

A spokesman said: "All proceeds from these shows have gone to local charities.

THe past eight shows have raised around £20,000.

"THis one was for the Aldingbourne Trust, a charity dedicated to helping people with autism and learning difficulties fulfil their potential.

"All the money from the sale of tickets, programmes and advertisements go to the charities as all expenses are met by the Players' supporters."

THese include the cost of hiring Climping Village Hall for the shows being met by Nineveh House's owner.

Anniversary of historic royal time in Bognor Regis to be celebrated HISTORIANS in Bognor Regis plan to celebrate this year's anniversary of its royal seal of approval THis week marked 90 years since it was announced the ailing King George V was to stay in the town to recuperate.

THe monarch spent some three months on his convalescence from a serious lung condition.

His time in the town led to the 'Regis' suffix being awarded - unique in the 20th century - and Bognor Regis Local History Society members are determined the occasion should be marked.

Greg Burt, its chairman, said: "We are going to paint on the front of the museum '1929-2019 90 years of Regis' to mark the anniversary.

"We will also be keeping the display about the King's visit which we put on show last year.

"THe King's visit led to the town adopting the motto of the key to royal health and I found this giant key in a charity shop and thought it summed that up so well.

"We are also going to be talking to the town council about various events we can hold together this summer.

"Part of our policy is to promote the past and educate people and this year's anniversary is a good chance to do that."

THe story of King George V, whose empire covered a large portion of the globe, and Bognor dates back to November, 1928.

THe monarch caught a chill in that month, which was thought to have occurred at the war memorial service at

the Cenotaph. THe condition affected his right lung.

At the beginning of December, 1928, a bulletin by the King's surgeons stated his heart was weakening.

He became unconscious and he began his fight for life after a lung operation.

His doctors decided his health would be helped by some bracing sea air. Several resorts were said to have put themselves forward for the honour.

But, on January 22, 1929, the newspapers carried the following statement from Buckingham Palace: "THe time is approaching when His Majesty's removal to sea air will be advantageous."

THe residence selected was Craigweil House in Aldwick, owned by Sir Arthur du Cross, Baronet, the owner of Dunlop.

Preparations were put in place for the royal stay. THe King's wife, Queen Mary, visited the house on the Craigweil Estate ahead of the stay.

But it was not until February 9, a Saturday, the King was judged well enough to make the journey from Buckingham Palace to Bognor.

His arrival was preceeded by an hour by the Queen - and 13 weeks began of recuperation for His Majesty.

THat period saw the reigning Monarch and three future sovereigns spend time in the town.

In spite of the winter weather, the sea air proved to be just the tonic for the King. Some previous monarchs had gone abroad for their health.

But Bognor - noted in the national press

for its favourable climate - had given his recovery the perfect boost.

He left for Buckingham Palace in May. Councillors in the town were keen to make the most of the unprecedented stay and asked the King to give them a formal title in recognition of it.

He agreed and it was on July 26, 1929, that Regis, Latin for 'of the king', was bestowed on the town.

King George V lived for a further seven years. His acknowledgement of Bognor's role enabled the town to join what is thought to be 11 other Regis towns in England.

Other examples include Lyme Regis in Dorset, Houghton Regis (Bedfordshire), Rowley Regis (West Midlands) and Milton Regis (Kent). THe titles date back centuries and recognise royal ownership of land.

Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds said: "Having the Regis suffix, is something to be proud of. We are the only town in Sussex with that royal title.

"THat royal recognition makes the town distinct."

THe royal warrant is displayed among the names of former chairmen and mayors in the council chamber of the town hall.

It consists of 22 lines of densely-packed words in copperplate writing and is signed by three dignataries completed with their heraldic shields.

Town could live up to vision

` Landlords warned PROPERTY landlords have been given less than a week by Arun District Council to obey the law.

THe council has imposed a deadline of January 31 for the house and flat owners to apply for a new licence for houses of multiple occupancy.

THe licences became mandatory last October 31 for any property which is occupied by five or more people who form at least two households and who share basic amenities like a kitchen and toilet.

An Arun spokesman said it would take enforcement action against landlords who failed to seek a licence by next Monday.

"Any unlicensed properties found to be operating after this date will be subject to enforcement action," he said.

SIR Richard Hotham’s vision for Bognor Regis could be coming true this year, residents have been told.

Greg Burt, chairman of the town’s local history society, said he believed 2019 could be time for the re-awakening of its fortunes.

He told those gathered at the annual ceremony to mark the latest anniversary of the town's founder laying its first foundation stone: “Every year, we say this will be a new dawn for the town but every year nothing changes.

“THis year, there are much more positive things to say. It looks like there will be things happening rather than just being talked about.

“THere is the Butlin’s swimming pool – a fantastic facility for the town – and lots of things the town and district councils are doing.

“Sir Richard was a private investor and there are lots of businesses really making the most of the town, like Butlin’s and the business improvement district, which is businesses getting together to put money into the town, just as Sir Richard did.

“THis is the first time for many years we have been able to say that and we can see it is really starting to make a difference.”

Some 30 members of the history society and civic dignitaries attended the service at the grave of Sir Richard – a hatter and MP in London - in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene Church on Friday.

It marked the day in 1878 when the building which is now Hotham Park House, and was then a farmhouse, began to take shape.

Sir Richard (1722-99) teamed up with the church’s vicar, the Rev THomas Dunford, to buy large areas of land to begin to turn his dream into reality.

Royalty did stay but the popularity he sought proved elusive before his death even as he continued building.

Arun District Council’s vice chairman, Cllr Pat Dillon, said he had been prompted to become a councillor by the differences he had seen in Bognor Regis between his time working in the town in the Sixties and when he moved there 15 years ago.

“I was shocked by how much it had changed. It’s very difficult but we are going in the right direction. THere are lots of exciting things going on," he said.

“All I can say to everybody who lives in and around Bognor Regis is to look to the future. You can’t live in the past. You need to move forward.”

Cllr Phil Woodall, Bognor Regis’ deputy town mayor, said: “Hopefully, we are on the up and the town is improving.”

Firm's fridges help save lives EMPLOYEES at a Bognor Regis firm are helping children in some of the world's poorest countries to receive lifesaving vaccines.

THe 20 Polestar Cooling staff members, and their national partner Dulas, make solar-powered medical fridge-freezers that are used to preserve the medication in countries where power supplies are often unreliable.

THe government's Department for International Development is working with the companies and the Gavi vaccine alliance to supply the essential equipment to Djibouti and Togo through the UK aid scheme. Phil Polack, Polestar's managing director, said: "Our fridge is better than a standard fridge because it does not require a battery.

"THis means the fridge has a ten-year lifespan. THe old battery-style fridge used to have breakdowns and would need engineers that were very hard to find and would mean that children were not getting immunised."

Polestar's factory, in Beeding Close, on the Southern Cross industrial estate, produces some 2,000 fridges and freezers a year. Many are made for its partner, Dulas, a pioneer in solar-powered refrigeration systems.

THose which are sent overseas to be used for vaccines are typically 200 litre fridge-freezers. THe medicines are stored in the fridge compartment and the ice to keep them cool on journeys into remote areas is produced in the freezer.

Outside of safe temperatures, vaccines deteriorate and become unusable.

British international development secretary Penny Mordaunt said the products showed the worth of British aid around the globe.

"From the telephone to the solar fridge, British invention and innovation continues to make a huge difference across the world.

"UK aid is a badge of hope for millions of people, and that starts with the work of fantastic Brits like those manufacturing these life-saving devices in Bognor Regis.

"Our work with Gavi not only protects over half the world's children from disease, but tackles outbreaks before they can reach our shores.

THis month has seen Dulas deliver 113 solar medical fridge-freezers to Togo. It sent 26 to Djibouti last year.

Between 2015 and 2017, the company installed almost 2,000 fridge-freezers with support from Gavi, to reach some of the world's most vulnerable people.

THis equipment means that children in countries like Burma and Sierra Leone are being given lifesaving vaccines.

Dr Seth Berkley, Gavi's chief executive, said: "Vaccines are not like normal

pharmaceuticals.

"THey are extremely sensitive to temperature and can quickly become ineffective if they are not kept cold at all times.

"THat's why innovative solar refrigerators like those produced by Dulas are so important."

Gavi focuses on the 68 poorest countries in the world by funding vaccines against some of the deadliest diseases such as pneumonia and measles.

` Tackling textiles LAST year alone it cost West Sussex taxpayers £1.7million to dispose of textiles binned by their owners.

THat’s a staggering 11,000 tonnes of unwanted clothes, towels, blankets or sheets thrown out with the general rubbish.

Just over 7,000 tonnes of textiles were thrown into rubbish bins at home and nearly 4,000 tonnes at the household waste recycling sites, even though most of these textiles could have been repaired, reused or recycled.

Non-biodegradable textiles, such as polyester and nylon, can take between 20 and 200 years to fully biodegrade.

THe West Sussex Waste Partnership will be helping residents to think before throwing to reduce textiles going to waste including the three steps: Repair – You don’t have to be an expert with a needle and thread, but sewing on a button or hemming some trousers are useful skills.

Reuse – If something you love can’t be repaired, why not turn it into something new?

Recycle – If your textiles are beyond repair or reuse, or unsuitable for donation to charity, you can still take them to a textiles bank at either your local household waste recycling site.

From now until the end of March, the West Sussex Waste Partnership is running a campaign called Tackling Textiles, where it will be sharing hints and tips on what residents can do to repair, reuse and recycle textiles.

Council agrees to more support for special education

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN with special educational needs and disabilities will have more opportunity to go to school closer to where they live, under new proposals outlined by West Sussex County Council.

Richard Burrett, cabinet member for education and skills, has agreed to instigate a programme aimed at increasing the number of special support centres within mainstream schools.

THe centres allow children with additional needs such as autism or social, emotional and mental health needs to be educated in mainstream settings.

THere are currently 32 centres in West Sussex, and the proposals would see up to 11 more created over the next three years, opening up more than 100 extra places across the county.

Phase one would see two new centres created at nursery schools in Chichester and Horsham, and two more added to primary schools, with the aim of opening this September.

Mr Burrett said: “THe large rise in the number of young people identified with additional needs and the shortage of local provision has seen more children placed in specialist schools outside of their local area.

"Strengthening and expanding our educational needs provision in

mainstream schools will allow more children to receive high quality education locally, reducing their travel and helping them build friendships in their local communities.”

Phases two and three could then see seven more centres created in primary and secondary schools across West Sussex.

THe number of children with an education, health and care plan has gone from 3,423 in March, 2015, to 4,912 in August, 2018, an increase of 43 per cent.

Local authorities fund this, and now also support people with educational needs up to the age of 25.

With no additional funding from central government, West Sussex is having to balance its overall high needs budget.

Investing in the new centres would enable more West Sussex children to be educated locally, in line with the county council’s current strategy. It would also reduce the council’s high travel costs because of the number of children currently placed in expensive, out-ofcounty provision, creating a predicted overall budget saving. Children in current placements would not be affected by this proposal.

THe proposals were discussed at the children’s and young people’s services select committee last week where members endorsed the development of a full business case for consideration within the council’s Capital Programme.

New measures for ambulances SOUTH EAST Coast Ambulance Service hopes to come out of special measures within a year, county councillors have been told.

THe trust, which covers Sussex, Surrey, Kent and parts of Hampshire, was placed in special measures in 2016 after an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

Reasons for the rating included bullying and delayed response times which inspectors said put patients at risk. THe trust said at the time that it was committed to improving the quality of its service.

It was still rated inadequate in 2017, before being upgraded to requiring improvement in 2018, with the commission recognising that ‘significant progress’ had been made.

At a meeting of West Sussex County Council’s health and adult social care select committee on Wednesday last

week, members received an update from the ambulance service and examined a report into the work being done.

THe committee was told that the trust was ‘well within the national averages’ on response time for the most severe emergency calls, such as cardiac arrests and traffic accidents.

But Jane Phoenix, the ambulance service's deputy director of strategy and business development, acknowledged that response times for the less serious categories, such as fractures, falls and diabetic problems was ‘not good enough’.

Ms Phoenix said: “It’s obviously a journey. We had significant issues regarding safeguarding, we had significant issues around medicines management.

“We’ve gone from having significant concerns about some of those things to being an exemplar in the ambulance

service, particularly with medicines management.”

From February six mental health nurses will be placed in emergency operation centres to help deal appropriately with mental health calls.

THe trust has also formed an alliance with West Midlands and South Western Ambulance Services to allow them to share best practice and save money by buying supplies, equipment and fuel together.

Councillors were assured that the alliance was not a merger and did not mean ambulances would be sent to incidents in the Midlands and South West and vice versa.

Andy Cashman, regional operations manager, said: “THis is ongoing work both within the trust and with our partners. It’s not a race to the finish.”

Mindful that the smaller Co-Op franchises often have money off multiple buys, I duly wended my way to the newly-refurbished Hawthorn Road CoOp in Bognor Regis and was delighted to ascertain that a 15 per cent discount was available on four bottles or more purchased thus meaning I was able to procure decent wine for under five readies!

THe red wines were arguably the pick in terms of best buys and I began to focus on wines that should remain on offer until January 29.

Two reds are on offer for just five pounds in the form of a Tempranillo and a Shiraz. THe Hereford Tempranillo is not in fact from these shores, but hails from Argentina and is a mix of equal parts of Tempranillo and Malbec and has red fruit aromas in abundance with red berries and a touch of spice, good acidity and non-overpowering tannins - a great

My last red for £6.50 is a 2016 Muriel Vendimia Seleccionada - Muriel is well reputed for producing good value Rioja dating back to 1926 with one hundred hectares of their own vineyards.

Textbook modern Rioja style with an expressive nose of sweet and sour red cherry and a hint of vanilla. Dry savoury notes , silky tannins and a long finish characterise this vintage.

` Safeguarding adults REPORTS of alleged abuse or neglect of vulnerable adults in West Sussex have almost doubled in two years.

THe annual report from the county’s safeguarding adults board showed that neglect, physical abuse and financial or material abuse were the main concerns raised in 2017/18.

Others were: sexual abuse, psychological abuse, discriminatory abuse, organisational abuse and domestic abuse.

A total of 6,751 matters were raised – a 23.5 per cent increase and the highest recorded in the county – leading to the launch of 2,449 enquiries.

More than half related to people in care homes and the majority involved women.

In 2015/16, there were 3,388 reports leading to 1,473 enquiries.

Annie Callanan, independent chairman of the board, told a county council select committee the increase could be put down to raised awareness of the issues, with more people reporting their concerns.

She predicted new legislation governing social care introduced under the 2014 Care Act would see the figures rise.

Ms Callanan said: “We want people to be concerned about safeguarding and, in the early years of the legislation, I would expect that figure to go up if we’re doing our job properly.”

Members of the select committee asked why the annual report had been received so late and Ms Callanan said there had been ‘issues’ gathering and analysing the information.

She assured them the next one would be on time.

Music group's special concert THE ENSEMBLE Reza were warmly welcomed back to perform at the Funtington Music Group’s concert at the University of Chichester on Wednesday last week.

THe programme they chose included Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht, probably the most popular piece today written

by Schoenberg, a work written in 1899 which spans the divide between Romanticism and Modernism. It is full of lush post-Romantic harmonies, and surging melodic lines, but it is also foretelling Schoenberg’s abandonment of traditional tonal harmonies.

Pavlos Carvalho introduced the piece and wisely concluded his introduction by helpfully reading the poem on which the piece is based, written in 1896 by Richard Dehmel. THis put the piece into context, with its range of emotions from tragedy to redemption, from agony to ecstasy. THe Reza interpreted this most challenging of pieces by producing a glorious breadth of textures and

musical colour. THis was an assertive and top quality performance from six outstanding musicians.

THe introductory piece was Schubert’s Quartettsatz D703.THis was a convincing choice to come before the Schoenberg, and the Reza produced a formidably satisfying performance. THey brought a balanced mix of vitality, depth, musical expertise, combined where necessary with a playful and theatrical flair.

No one musician can be highlighted as the players, although individually brilliant, played with a real tangible feeling of collegiate responsibility. THe concert concluded with a performance of Dvorak’s Sextet in A Major, Opus 48.

In their interpretation, THe Reza created a fitting conclusion to a magnificent concert, which was extremely well received by the audience.

Mascot Monty is a success SHOPPERS in Bognor Regis were given paws for thought at one of the town's charity outlets.

Monty the Dog handed out collection bags and balloons outside the RSPCA shop in THe Arcade in the High Street.

THe mission of the mascot of the charity's Mount Noddy animal rehoming centre was to prompt residents to fill the bags with unwanted items to donate to the shop.

Lucy Birch, a promoter with the charity who accompanied Monty, said during the first of the two sessions: "We've given out about 50 bags after three hours and a lot more balloons.

"It's been good to get the name of the RSPCA out there even more.

"As soon as people realise what we are doing here, they are really nice about it.

"We are hoping people will be able to fill the bags when they have a clearout for the new year."

THe shop is keen to receive clothes and household items which can be sold to raise money for its work looking after a range of animals at the Eartham centre.

Women's shoes and handbags are needed in particular to replenish its stock.

THe 82-year-old Chichester woman went into her bank in the city to withdraw £4,000 cash as instructed but bank staff become concerned about her welfare, spotted that something was not right, and called police.

Police attended on each occasion and have been providing support, including advice and assistance on prevention measures.

PC Bernadette Lawrie, the Sussex Police financial abuse safeguarding officer, said: "Remember, no police officer, or bank staff on the phone, will ever ask for your bank details or for cash.

Don't give your details or cash to anyone in these circumstances!

"One of the attempts was prevented due to the good work of bank staff, using the nationally agreed police/banking protocol which has trained bank staff in how to spot the signs of this type of crime."

THe week includes a mixture of classroom-based and practical activities. Students will be able to meet a variety of health and social care professionals during the week, including doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, occupational and complementary therapists and social workers.

Police are reminding West Sussex residents, especially the elderly, to stay on the alert for bogus phone calls and visitors after seven cases of courier fraud or attempted fraud in nine days THankfully, six of the attempts failed due to alert residents, and, in one case, bank staff. But in one incident the thieves got away with £4,000. In each case residents have received phone calls from someone purporting to be a 'Detective Chief Inspector Mark Andrews' from London's Charing Cross Police station.

THe caller alleges that there has been unauthorised use of a debit or credit card, that someone has been arrested and there is an investigation ongoing.

THe caller later alleged to some of the residents that there was an employee at his bank who was passing fraudulent money through his or her account and that they should go to the bank and withdraw cash, in sterling or Euros, to send to the 'officer' via a courier who would call at their home, to take away for a check on whether it is fraudulent.

Tea rooms destination not a detour

WHEN travellers on the A27 make a point of a detour to eat at Denmans Gardens' tea rooms, it must have something to make them return time after time.

Former regular customers were delighted when the pavilon tea rooms re-opened after renovation and can again enjoy dishes prepared on the premises in a kitchen which has achieved the top food hygiene accreditation.

Oasis of calm all year round

IT MAY be the depths of winter but a visit to the inspiring legacy of an internationally-renowned garden designer and a plantswoman will lift anyone’s spirits.

After 15 months of closure and following the death of founding father John Brookes MBE in March last year, the team at Denmans Garden at Fontwell is continuing the renovations begun before his death.

The four-acre garden - an oasis of calm, tucked immediately off the A27 dual carriageway next to Fontwell racecourse - is now owned

by Gwendolyn van Paasschen, who is also chairman of the John BrookesDenmans Foundation and came to know Denmans after working with Mr Brookes in the USA, and she is buzzing with excitement at the future of the beloved attraction.

Explaining the history of the site, which was part of a small country estate owned by Lord Denman in the early 20th century then used by the WRAF in the Second World War, Gwendolyn said it had been bought by Hugh and Joyce Robinson in 1946 and cultivated as a commercial market garden for 30 years.

From the 1930s, Joyce developed her

self-taught skills as a plantswoman.

“While John was important to Denmans, it is also Joyce’s legacy,” said Gwendolyn. “John, who was an established garden designer in the 1980s, brought students to see Joyce’s planting and, after he moved here, their complementary talents led to today’s garden.”

Now, following a closure period, John’s death and re-organisation, Denmans is again alive with gardening delight for all ages, and, at all times of the year, there is colour and interest around every corner.

Work on renovating structures in the intimate contemporary garden is well under way and many of the 8,000 bulbs planted in late autumn are already pushing out of the ground, adding to the colour contrasts of shrubs and trees.

With three full-time gardeners, Gwendolyn praised her “amazing” team for their hard work and the creation of a happy atmosphere to which regular visitors return time and again.

For those who want to take home a little of the Denmans magic, seeds and plants are sold among other wares at the gift shop, while it and the popular tea rooms are open without visiting the garden.

Summing up the charm of Denmans, Gwendolyn said: “It really is an incredibly special place with its own soul which people connect to.”

THe feast continued with chicken kala, with ginger and peppers. One of the chef’s recommendations, and the classic chicken massala, cooked in a clay oven with a creamy tandoori sauce.

To accompany our selection, we tried some of the array of side dishes: nirasmish - a variety of colourful vegetables dry and spicy - and a delicious creamy yellow tarka dall, comprising lentils with garlic. THe dall was particularly delicious with a big chunk of the fluffy garlic naan, and, in contrast, the sag sana gobi of potatoes, spinach and chickpeas was a lighter dish.

By Kelly Wickham SO India is a charming restaurant located in Felpham on the outskirts of Bognor Regis. I booked the meal for a quiet Tuesday night, and was surprised with the extremely friendly staff who greeted us and showed us to our table.

THe décor is fabulous, bringing little snippets of India here and there including wooden elephant carvings, giving it a cosy feel of the colourful sub-continent.

We took the menu to browse and the waiter very kindly recommended some dishes for us to try.

Owner Michael Noor opened So India, following the success of his other restaurants in the area, and converted the building to create an elegant and attractive venue, suitable for very large parties, with smaller more intimate areas for couples.

My friend and I were both very impressed by the extensive menu, which includes some unusual dishes, such as ostrich bazar, duck

shaslik, and mussels, alongside the more familiar chicken, lamb and fish based dishes.

So India treated us to a selection of dishes. To start, the crab malibar, a smooth homemade minced crab cake prepared with onions, green peppers and potatoes, an excellent appetiser, along with the tiger prawns puree, resplendent with herbs and spices, and salmon tikka, delicate chunks of salmon marinated in barbecue sauce and cooked over charcoal to start.

We were spoilt for choice with the main course dishes, but in the end sampled the gost kata massala, a tender lamb tikka which had been immersed overnight in a marinade of ground spices, and served in a delicate sauce with just a hint of tamarind, ginger and garlic, giving a warm fulsome flavour.

THe duck jaalsha was a dish I had not tried before, and would thoroughly recommend, lean duck pieces crisped over charcoal flames, and simmered in a spicy sauce with coconut and cardamom - simply irresistible.

My dining companion is a devoted fan of lamb and he particularly enjoyed the honey roasted spicy lamb dish. THe tender marinated meat was cooked in lemon, to give it a piquant sharpness which was mellowed by the addition of coconut milk.

`So India is gaining a very good reputation around town already, and with the extensive menu, hot fresh authentic Indian cuisine and smiling, friendly waiter service, it is no surprise. `On Monday nights So India even offers a five course banquet for a very reasonable £12.95 per head, which is exceptionally popular, so make sure you book!

Community News & Views fit A resort g for a Kin IT WAS 90 years ago King George V and Queen Mary came to Bognor for their historic visit.

THe Bognor Regis Post will be publishing weekly excerpts from archive editions of The Times to show how it informed its readers about the monarch's recovery from a lung illness: Wednesday, January 23 - A bulletin, the first to be issued since Saturday evening, was signed the previous day by five of the doctors who had been attending the King. It said he had enjoyed a quiet night and his empyema wound was small and steadily healing.

THe bulletin was supplemented by an official statement from Buckingham Palace: "It has been realized by the King's medical advisors that prior to the establishment of convalescence there would arrive a time when sea air would be necessary in order to secure the continuation of his Majesty's progress.

"With that knowledge careful search was made for a residence not only suitable in itself but possessing the necessary attributes of close proximity to the sea, southern exposure, protection from wind, privacy, and reasonable access to London.

"THe residence selected is Craigweil House, Bognor, placed at his Majesty's disposals by Sir Arthur du Cros, Bt." (Baronet).

Craigweil House was described as being in the village of Aldwick about a mile west of Bognor.

Sir, I would like to thank you for the article about the collection box which was stolen at my Christmas lights display for St Wilfrid's Hospice, pictured above.

Unfortunately, the box hasn't turned up. It is such a shame as the man who made it is no longer around to make another one.

Regarding the money, I had no idea how much there was in the box. It still amazes everyone the thief could dig it up as it was buried two feet in the ground.

My thanks go to all the people who have called with donations for the hospice's Dreambuilding fund. THe total has now gone up to £545.20, which is marvellous in the circumstances.

I feel the people in Felpham really have a heart. THe comments and messages have been uplifting. Many of them feel utter disgust about what has happened.

We did establish the thief must have been in a car to take the pole and box. THe security light was broken. Only an adult could reach that.

While I wish to thank everyone, the biggest thing of all would be to find the box.

A GOVERNOR is being sought to help to run the hospital in Bognor Regis.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a resident of the Arun district to join its council of governors.

An election of the candidates will be held. THe successful individual will play an important role in the work of the trust.

Its community nurses treated 51,000 people last year and 4,300 patients were admitted to the trust's community hospitals - such as Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

THe hospital's minor injuries unit was among those who treated 123,000 patients in 2018.

Peter Horn, who chairs the trust, said: "Our governors play a vital role in shaping the future of community services across Sussex. THey help us to understand the needs of the local population and give voice to the communities that we serve.

THOUSANDS of homes planned for Bersted will provide no benefit for existing residents, a parish councillor has warned.

Cllr Gill Yeates said Arun District Council was set to impose a zero rate of the community infrastructure levy on new properties such as the 2,500 set to be built in Chalcraft Lane.

“THere is not a lot in it for Bersted,” she told the parish council’s meeting last week.

She said Arun’s intended charging structure for the levy was hard to understand but only a commercial scheme, like the planned Aldi at the Saltbox development, would produce any income to be spent on projects in the parish.

As reported, the levy is imposed on landowners when they sell a plot to developers based on the square metre size of the building to be erected.

Arun has decided that its sites for large-scale housing developments along the coast should be exempt from the levy to avoid the landowners being deterred from selling.

Cllr Martin Lury, another member of Bersted Parish Council, has organised protests about the housing.

He said the prospect of the housing in Chalcraft Lane and another 1,000 homes in Pagham going up was a ‘nightmare’.

“THe thought of putting 3,000-4,000 houses to the south-west of us and, with the traffic coming this way, is going to gridlock us. We are not anti-housing as such.

"But I think it is wrong to put housing down which is going to be used by people coming into the area to buy property which is cheap to them. THis prices out people around here who can’t compete with them because it is a low-wage economy.”

But his fellow parish councillor, Keir Greenway, said Arun was right to be cautious about the rate of the levy.

“If the levy is too high, it will price out local people,” he said.

“Why would Arun try to make it harder for people to be able to afford a house?”

Earlier, county and district councillors Francis Oppler and Sue Bence had used their respective slots in the timetable to clash about the matter.

Cllr Oppler said: “I feel Arun is setting the levy too low. It is being set at three per cent generally and that will raise £15,000 a property. THat is small change to a developer. Arun has the flexibility to put the levy up to five per cent.

But Cllr Mrs Bence said: “THe levy needs to be at a rate that the developer doesn’t notice. If it is too high, it will be the people who buy the properties who will pay it and not the developer."

TIME is running out to nominate a young person in the Bognor Regis area for an award.

THe annual presentation evening for the Arun Youth Community Awards will take place on March 13.

THe scheme is run by Rotary clubs in the area to recognise the achievements of young people aged 11-19 in the community.

A spokesman for Bognor Regis Rotary Club said: "It could be a young person who has volunteered to help others or raise money for charity? "Or perhaps they have gone above and beyond expectations at school?"

THe awards date back many years and they were taken over by the Rotary clubs in 2015 to be given a new lease of life. Last year's ceremony is pictured above.

Dozens of young people have been put forward every year since then and attend the glittering presentation ceremony at the Windmill Entertainment Centre in Littlehampton in March.

Nomination forms have been printed and widely distributed.

Church's origins date back two centuries Congregational church continues to serve congregations after long history in town WHEN looking at churches as we go about our daily tasks, we are often quite unaware of the history behind both the premises and the congregation. I am sure this was true of the United Reformed Church in Linden Road.

Its story goes back to November, 1812, when a room was used at the home of THomas Goldring for the purpose of preaching. Within three years, a small chapel existed at No 30 Chichester Road. THis chapel was situated near Springfield, which was to become the Bognor Hospital.

By 1816, an evangelical magazine had the following recommendation: “To the friends of religion who leave London for the summer months to enjoy the advantages of a country retreat, Bognor presents many attractions."

THis is within 17 years of Sir Richard Hotham’s death. By 1817, the town map clearly shows the ‘meeting house’ in Chichester Road.

Nine years later, the Rev Matthew Wilks ‘conveyed land’ in Dorset Gardens, which was then a cul-de-sac, for 10/- (50p) to the Rev James Edwards for the erection of a chapel, which became known as Hanover Chapel in ‘deference to the Royal House’ of the time. It was opened on August 31, at a cost of £300 and provided seating for 200 people.

THe 1852 Town Guide mentioned that the

‘Hanover chapel belongs to trusts for the use of Congregational Independents.’ THere were only three burials carried out at the chapel, but later they were removed to the New Town cemetery in Town Cross Avenue.

A site was purchased on the junction of London Road and the High Street. THis was an area that had been used by farmer Mr Munday to keep his cows.

By August 24, 1868, building had begun and the memorial stone was laid on November 30 to enable the first services to take place in July, 1869. THe early gothic style building had cost £2,621 and the Bognor guides felt that it was a ‘neat and commodious structure.’

THe Hanover Chapel then continued to be used as a Sunday school and lecture hall. Eventually, in 1897, this building was renamed THe Victoria THeatre and was used by touring companies to entertain Bognor residents. THis building was situated opposite St. John’s Church, today the site of Boots. In 1920, the Reynolds family purchased the hall and it became an auction room and store.

THe church and its religious fortunes continued and in 1910 Mr William Hounson from Hove purchased a plot of land on the east side of London Road. By January 11, 1911, the building was opened and consisted of two floors with a porch entrance and a small front

garden. By 1963, this building, which was situated behind the Hansford shop, was used as the town library.

THe church at the junction of London Road and the High Street continued to be well used.

However, in 1929, a number of approaches were made about buying the site, as it was a prime area in the town developments taking place. THe decision to sell was made as the congregations were being disturbed ‘by the uproar of traffic.’

It was eventually sold to Timothy Whites and Co for £17,000. A clause was inserted that stated: “that no building now erected or hereafter to be erected on the land or any part thereof shall at any time hereafter be used as premises licensed for the sale of alcoholic liquor other that medicated or medicinal wines.” In addition, there was a ban made on the use of the site for a theatre, cinematograph or dance hall.

A new site was eventually found in Linden Road, which was part of the kitchen garden of a house called THe Hawthorns. THe new church was constructed by the building company of Messrs HW Seymour and Co of Bognor. On December 11, 1929, the foundation stone was laid in Linden Road at today’s site.

By 1930, the new church in Linden Road, which had cost £21,334 8s 7d (£21,334.43) was opened on Wednesday, October 29, with a dedication service.

Also, in 1930, the Institute in London Road was sold to Mr Hansford.

THe church year book for 1930 described the new church as being arranged to ‘form a composite building,’ because the church had its main entrance in Linden Road but was

separate from the adjoining hall. THe church was ‘cruciform in plan, with a chancel 21 feet by 18 feet forming the head of the cross.’

Another feature was that, while the church had its main entrance in Linden Road, there was a small walkway through from Burnham Avenue allowing people to enter the church from the north and south with equal ease.

During the Second World War, the Sunday school premises was used by the Duppas School from Croydon and also two air raid shelters were erected to the west side of the church. In 1942, the church was bombed, and the north window was damaged.

After the war, the West Sussex education authorities took over the school and used the premises for the Michael Ayres School's pupils until their school was completed.

By 1946, the Manse had been purchased in Linden Road, thus completing the journey of this church from its humble beginnings in Chichester Road in 1812.

During the 1980s the church was even seen regularly on national television as Dave Allen, the comedian, used it for his ‘confessional scenes’ in his television series. THe church was paid a nominal £10 by the TV company towards church funds.

THe church held its last service in July, 2010, and, after much rumour about its fate, it was reopened as a community centre - including several churches - and renamed ‘Jeneses’.

It is good to hear of a church that is so busy.

Today it is very much a community-based facility both for religion and a meeting hub for many organisations. Also, through everyone’s hard work,the building has been saved for the future for the purpose for which it was built.

Chichester Anna Chaplaincy provides a spiritual and emotional befriending service for older people, their families and carers in Chichester city. Minimum volunteer time would be 3 hours to cover either a morning or afternoon, ideally 6 hours to cover the day.

Shop volunteers may get involved in a variety of tasks: welcoming new and regular customers to the shop; serving customers and helping them with enquiries; processing payments on the till; sorting donated stock; helping to price items and ticketing, ensuring that products are attractively displayed; creating attractive window displays; hanging and steaming garments; and helping to maintain high standards of housekeeping, ensuring the shop is tidy, clean and well organised ensuring the safety of all within it.

Derby day win gives Blues plenty to PostSport cheer ahead of trip to Dartfordians CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to use a derby day win to propel them up the London One South table as the season rolls on.

Blues chalked up their first win of 2019 with an excellent 19-28 bonus point victory away at Havant on the 4G turf last weekend.

THe result not only ended a run of four games without a win; the five points against their loval rivals has seen fourth-bottom Chi close the gap on the sides directly above them.

With a trip to fifth-bottom Dartfordians coming tomorrow (2pm) Blues will hope to keep up that winning feeling.

With just one point separating the two sides then a Chi win would see them leapfrog their opponents and could put some breathing space between them and the bottom three.

THe Oaklands Park faithful will be hoping for the same breathtaking start that their side showed against Havant.

Blues, who were cheered on by a decent away cohort, took less than five minutes to make an impact as Henry Anscombe kicked two drop goals to put them 0-6 up.

From the restart Chi remained on the front foot. Sam Renwick at outside centre put the afterburners on and sped for the line before

being tackled just short.

Two pick and goes later and Toby Golds dotted down for a try. Conversion missed.

0-11 and less than eight minutes on the clock.

Two quick penalties for the hosts kept Havant in the match. But Chi continued to take their chances.

Renwick once again discected the Havant defence and once again he was brought down just short of the line.

THe ball was recycled to Anscombe, who dived between two defenders to dot down next to the posts. Converted. 6-18.

THere was still time for the hosts to reply with a try of their own. 11-18 at the break.

Into the second period and Chi's discipine problems started to haunt them. THe hosts converted one penalty to narrow the margin before Blues were reduced to 14.

THe Chi defence held firm and soon added to their score when Joe Woods rounded off some strong forward play.

Another try followed with five minutes left when Tom Blewitt wrong footed the defender to secure a bonus point. Havant responded with a late score but it was not enough to secure a losing bonus point.

DARTS: Friary Z's Richard Ragles saw off stiff competition to lift the Bognor Friday Benevolent Darts League Division One singles crown for the first time.

Close to 50 players took part in the contest with three trophies up for grabs at the Newtown Social Club.

Ragless made it through to the final with a whitewash of Andy Stubbs (Hunston Hares), who had hit four straight tons and a 101 out-shot for a 15 dart leg earlier in the night.

He continued this purple patch of scoring in the final against his team mate Dave Owens (Friary 'Z'), pictured below.

After hitting 85, 137 and 82, Ragless eventually hit the double for the first leg.

Owens started the second leg with a ton and followed it with 121, but Ragless hit two tons to keep close. It was the Friary man who held his nerve to take leg two. By now an ailing Owens was trying too hard while Ragless started leg three with a ton, then 60, 140, 94 and 67. THen with 40 left he hit the double, taking the leg, the match 3-0 and the Division One Singles champion title.

In Division Two Adam Hall (Aldingbourne Mavericks) who defeated Mark Wingate (Newtown Clubbers) in the semi, took on Nick Tabberer (Pagham CC 'B'), who hit two180s on his way to the final.

It was the Mavericks man who got off to a great start with scores of 140 and 100 before taking the leg in 20 darts.

Leg 2 started with a 180 from Tabberer, his third of the night, and until he got to the double his lowest score was 60.

But Hall was hot on his heels and took advantage of Tabberer's missed doubles, and for the second leg on the trot took his double in 20 darts.

THe third leg was a slow start for Hall while Tabberer started with 105. But it was the Mavericks player who his the double to take the crown.

Future looks bright for Bognor's colts

OLD and new are combining to great effect as Bognor 3s prepare to take on the best in the county in the Sussex Vase.

Having not conceded a point in their run to the semi-final, Bognor were firm favourites to beat Worthing Knights in the last four in front of a home crowd.

THey did not disappoint, coming out 36-8 winners to ensure they face Littlehampton in the final next week (February 2).

Key to the victory over the Knights was strong forward play with the scrum and lineout on top all day.

THis set up a strong platform for Frankie Jolley, Oscar Henson and Connor Herrington who played well in the backs on stepping up from the Colts.

It is set to be just the start of things to come as the newly-formed Bognor Academy meaning that 45 players currently at under16s and under-17s level will start to make the step up to senior level One of those players is Elvis Millen (u16s)

who is representing Hampshire at age level county level. His second full match this week saw Hampshire defeat Middlesex 35-19.

Back at Hampshire Avenue, Elvis' teammates produced an excellent performance to beat Fareham 38-0 at home while the under14s secured a substantial 52-0 win away at Haslemere.

Elsewhere, efforts to encourage more women and girls to pick up the sport seem to be playing off.

THe Inner Warrior event saw a total 22 women and girls enjoying a great morning of rugby-based fun and games.

Of those, Willow King and Amelia Glass have been chosen to attend Sussex County selection in early February.

With only three players in the Division THree competition a round-robin style knockout was played between Ashley Clements, Ian Dendy and Dave Coupland, all from the Royal Oak. After Coupland lost two matches, Clements and Dendy went straight for the best-of-five legs final. THere was no splitting the duo in the first four legs so the match went to a decider.

Clements hit a 140 and 97 but Dendy would follow with two tons on the trot.

Clements bust his out-shot by mistake, but Dendy missed with nine darts giving his teammate another go.

He took it, hitting double 8 to take the match 3-2 and the Division 3 Singles champion title 2018/19.

Forget Blue January - Selsey's push for top four gathers pace

Level pegging for Chi at top CHICHESTER City look set to be pushed all the way in the club's quest for promotion.

With three months of the season to go, only goal difference now separates the league leaders and secondplace Newhaven.

THat was after the Oaklands Park outfit had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Saltdean United last weekend With a midweek 2-0 defeat to Bostik South East side Haywards Heath in the semi final of the RUR Cup, outsiders could be forgiven for thinking that City were going through times.

But manager Miles Rutherford will have seen enough in the last week to be convinced that his side are still capable of winning the SCFL Premier title.

City's hold on top spot will be put to the test when they take on in-form Broadbridge Heath away tomorrow (3pm).

THe Bears are one of three sides to have drawn with the league leaders this season.

But with Chi last suffering defeat in the league in October ten league games ago, they will go into the match knowing that they having nothing to fear from the Bears.

THey will want to improve on the performance against Saltdean, where Chi struggled against a side who had lost three of their last four games coming into the match.

THe visitors took an early lead when Toby House made the most of a piece of good fortune after a clearance by Chi keeper Jordan Matthews’ ricocheted off Ben Pashley into his path.

City responded well, though, and were back on level terms just before the break when Ryan Peake converted from close range.

Into the second period and Chi continued to have the better of the play.

But despite a number of chances falling to their frontmen, City, who are the leading scorers in the division, could not find the winner.

THey were awarded the perfect opportunity when a penalty was given with just over 20 minutes left.

Ellis Martin was denied by the Saltdean keeper.

THen, 60 seconds later, the defender was off, red carded for a lunge. Both sides had chances to win the game but they were denied by good saves.

SELSEY'S quest to break into the top four of SCFL Division One continues as the Blues head to Seaford Town tomorrow (3pm).

Daren Pearce's side are now unbeaten in six matches after a midweek 3-1 victory on the road at Wick.

John Phillips and a brace from Lindon Miller sealed all three points for Selsey which means they are now just four points behind AFC Vardeanians in fourth.

With tomorrow's opponents without a win in a month, Blues will be confident of extending the run.

THey then face a rematch against Wick at Crabtree Park on Tuesday (7.45pm) in the third round of the Division One cup.

Fellow Division One side Sidlesham will be looking to bounce back from a 4-1 defeat to leaders Steyning when they visit secondbottom Southwick tomorrow (3pm).

Sids have built up a 14 point cushion on the bottom three and will be looking to build on that against a struggling Wickers side.

In SCFL Division Two, Boshm head to Rottingdean Village tomorrow (3pm) off the back of a 2-0 win at Montpelier Villa. Alex Barnes and James Wilson scored the goals.

Lions starting to look to future PAGHAM joint boss Tom Simmonds admits that the club's poor winter form has cost the club a shot at promotion - but believes that the Lions can still end the season on a positive note.

Any hopes of the Nyetimber Lane side gaining promotion from SCFL Premier have been ended after a run of just one win in 11 in all competitions.

THat poor form continued in the last week with a 0-0 draw at Shoreham followed by a 2-0 reverse at home to Crawley Down Gatwick in midweek.

With Pagham now ninth, 19 points off the top two, Simmonds said he and fellow manager Richie Hellen wanted to use the rest of the season to rebuild.

He said: "THe league has gone but we still have a cup quarter final and we will start to look ahead to next season.

"We want to finish as high as we can and that will mean us getting players fit and back from suspension and maybe getting a few more faces in."

For Simmonds, who only took up his first senior job in football last season alongside

Hellen, it is a new and unwelcome experience.

He said: "THings are tough at the moment and after matches we're all thinking about what more we can do to get the results we want. We went into the first week of December four points off the top and we had only lost once all season.

"But then through December we had nine out injured, then eight, then nine - the whole month we struggled with players being available and we struggled with results."

Pagham's plight has not been helped as a number of those injured players have now moved on to pastures new.

Callum Overton (Lewes), George Gaskin (THree Bridges) and Shane Brazil (Wick) are now signed up elsewhere.

With Ryan Cox now abroad and striker Dan Simmonds missing for another three weeks due to a hamstring injury, Pagham's selection issues are unlikely to be solved any time soon.

Next up is a home match against struggling Loxwood tomorrow (3pm).

Simmonds said: "Before Tuesday we had only lost the same number as the league leaders. If we had been offered that at the start of season we would have taken it.

"We have got one of the best defences in the league, it's just about finishing things off and being more clinical.

"We've had 11 draws and eight of those we had plenty of chances to win. If we'd got those extra points then we'd be top of the league."

Lewry leaves it late to fire City to final CHICHESTER City's Matt Wright says he is "over the moon" as the club sealed a spot in the Sussex County Cup final for the first time in five years.

THe Oaklands Park side inflicted a first defeat of a season on Crawley Wasps to give themselves a shot at silverware.

A first goal for the club by Tiff Taylor and a late penalty from Joss Lewry sealed the 2-1 win against a team who play in one league below National Premier South side Chi. Wright, who stepped in as manager for the day as Aaron Smith was absent due to illness, said: "I'm over the moon for everyone at the club. A lot of work and time and effort went into putting out a performance like that.

"THe girls really stepped up, which was

fantastic to see.

"We haven’t really fired on all cylinders for a little while but against Crawley we were good and dug in. We stayed on the front foot all the time, we pressured them and made them work hard. We wanted the place in that final."

Chi will have to wait a while for their big day out as the final is not due to be played until March 21 at Lancing FC with Brighton & Hove Albion or Lewes the opponents. Before then, City have a home against Milton Keynes Dons in the league on Sunday (2pm).

Wright said: "We've had a couple of years out of the competition. It's a great night out and we've had some great finals, we've won some and lost some and we're all really excited for that evening."

Muitt's spot on as front man aims to fire Rocks to success Next Game

CORINTHIAN C'LS (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR sharpshooter Jimmy Muitt believes a playoff spot is still "well within reach" adding he hopes he can score the goals to rocket the Rocks into the promotion race.

After a couple of seasons finding his feet at Nyewood Lane, the former Brighton youngster has been one of the stand-out performers for Jack Pearce's side this campaign.

Leading the attack for much of the year, Muitt has managed to bag 25 goals in all competitions so far.

With three months of the season still to go,that number will surely grow.

But the fan favourite says that his focus is purely on helping the Rocks push on up the Bostik Premier table.

Muitt said: "We seem to be inconsistent this season and you never really know which Bognor side will turn up, and that can be frustrating.

"But that said, if you look at the league table you can see we are in with a big shout for the playoffs and we want to push on and see if we can achieve that."

For a side that last season struggled for goals in the National South, the goalscoring prowess of Muitt has been welcomed by the Nye Camp faithful.

Of the 25 goals so far, three came in the last week as the 23-year-old slammed home a penalty in the 2-2 draw against Potters Bar in the league last weekend.

A brace followed in midweek, the first of which was another spot kick, in the 5-3 extra time win over Bostik South side East Grinstead in the Sussex Senior Cup quarter final.

THat sets up a semi final to be played at the end of February at county HQ in Lancing.

Muitt describes the cup and the potential to play at THe Amex as a "great opportunity".

However, the former Albion player maintains the focus for the squad remains on the league and improving on the current position of seventh - adding a playoff place is "well within our reach".

He added: "I'm enjoying my football at the minute and feel very confident in front of goal and for me personally it's been brilliant.

"To be fair, a few of the goals have been penalties but they still need to be scored."

"A lot has fallen right for me and I have to praise the lads for creating chances, too.

"I know if I can shoot and hit the target I've got a big chance to score and that obviously helps the team massively."

Muitt and the rest of the Rocks head up to south west London tomorrow to play Corinthian Casuals in the league (3pm).

With just three points separating third and 11th the Rocks will want to pick up a positive result to ensure they keep pace with their rivals.

But Casuals, who are 12th, are in good form, having won their last two league matches.

Rocks ride out a rough week IT'S been a challenging week for the injuryhit Rocks.

But after emerging unbeaten and with a couple of new additions to their stretched squad, Bognor will believe they have enough to keep pace as the season moves to its climax.

With seven players missing due to injury, manager Jack Pearce had warned the game against Potters Bar would pose problems.

With goalkeeper Dan Lincoln (work commitments), left-back Joe Tomlinson (unavailable) and centre-half Ed Sanders (cup-tied) missing in midweek, the Sussex Senior Cup match against East Grinstead was even more of a headache.

But the Rocks emerged with a draw and an extra time win. With the week now behind them there's positives to be taken.

THe return of on loan Portsmouth pair Dan Smith and Brad Lethbridge for the Potters Bar match is encouraging for the forward line THe performances of new additions Richard Gilot and former Stoke City player Harvey Read will give the Rocks boss plenty to be pleased with.

Pearce will also be happy that Corey Heath continues his return to fitness, playing 40 minutes against East Grinstead.

IT'S not often that I single out players for praise right at the top of this column.

But given the form he is in I want to say how great it is to see players like Jimmy Muitt on top form at the moment.

With 25 goals this season already in all competitions, we have a player that, if kept fit, can really push us into those playoff places.

If only life as a Rocks fan was always that simple.

Down the other end, the chopping and changing we have had to contend with has really hampered us this season.

In recent games, as usual, we are brilliant when we get on the attack but get caught at the back often straight after our chances.

Losing Gary Charman at Burgess Hill was a major blow.

But despite this we still managed to get the win at Leylands Park.

Two goals from Muitt settled it with a penalty and a breakaway goal to seal it right at the end.

THe Hillians had certainly improved under new manager, Simon Wormull and were pushing for the draw before we got the second.

Jimmy Wild even defended two long throws and some crosses from the right flank moments before Muitt sprung on the counter for our second.

THis was a great derby game and I am glad Bognor did the double over our Sussex rivals.

Time will tell if they are able to stay up.

Potters Bar Town at home followed this. Again we started well with two great goals, both being dispatched by Muitt.

THe first was a superb solo effort and, after Mason Walsh was tripped in the box by the goalkeeper, Muitt sent him the wrong way five minutes into the second half.

But the Scholars came back into the game gradually and substitute Ben Ward-Cochrane gave the visitors hope before

Sean Grace salvaged a point for them.

Apologies for my error - I thought the former had scored both!

It was definitely two points dropped for Bognor here after that start, it felt like a loss didn't it?

Next up was East Grinstead Town at home in the Senior Cup this past Tuesday.

I was rather impressed by the Wasps' work rate. THey never gave in. Bognor took another two goal lead.

Harvey Read netted from close range before yet another Muitt penalty meant we were cruising with about 20 minutes on the clock.

But the Wasps buzzed back and got back on level terms by half time, giving us plenty to do.

THe game went to extra time - it was so cold, I think most people wanted it over in 90 minutes!

Wild netted two nice goals before Muitt added his second before the Wasps got a late consolation.

THe game finally ended, meaning we progressed to Lancing's Culver Road in the semi finals of the Sussex Senior Cup! I look forward to that one.

THere has been news recently that clubs that win this year's play-offs in the Bostik Premier League might not get promoted.

I think this makes a farce of the whole season. Why play 40+ games in the season in a tough league like this and win the play-offs to be told you have to play another team from another league in order to get promoted to the National South?

I'd like to hear what other fans think. Maybe you an update me tomorrow when I will be at Corinthian Casuals.

We can still be top five in this league I believe - I just hope the players do as well! See you tomorrow!
