THe 35-0 vote, with two abstentions, sent a clear message to Arun District Council to abandon its £3.5m linear park scheme to replace the Sunken Garden.

One of the motions backed by the voters said the electors' meeting: 'Calls on Arun District Council to abandon the current scheme and instead allocate substantial

funding to the improvement and upgrade of the current gardens, which can be achieved for a very substantial lower sum, to include features wanted by the community gardeners group, BRTC (Bognor Regis Town Council) Town Force etc and a long overdue statue of the town's founder, Sir Richard Hotham.'

THe motions were also supported by 15 residents from neighbouring parishes, with none against, and one abstention.

Former councillor Roger Nash, who chaired the meeting, said: "THe resolution has been overwhelmingly carried. THank you all for coming this evening. Clearly, the message of what has been voted on tonight will be taken on board by the town council."

A total of 44 Bognor Regis electors and 20 from neighbouring areas signed in.

THe 90-minute electors' meeting on Wednesday was called by an unprecedented ten of 16 town council members.All but one speaker condemned the proposals for the Hothamton site of the 215-space car park, the Sunken Garden and the children's play area.

Walkers' anger as paths are blocked DOG WALKERS are among those seeking to overturn the fencing off of a popular natural area in Bognor Regis.

THe field, on the boundary with Felpham, has been blocked by its owner to everyone at all three accesses.

THose affected have turned to West Sussex County Council to establish the routes across the privately-owned field as public rights of way.

One of them, David Meagher, said: “To do that, we need 20 people who have been using these paths for more than 20 years.

“We don’t have to show they have been used for that period continuously – just that they have been open for use.

"I am confident we can do that. We believe the field has been used by the public for over 40 years.

But it is an onerous process to go through. THere are 20 questions on the form that need to be answered.”

From the Bognor Regis side, the field has been reached across a footbridge over the Aldingbourne Rife which was accessed along a grassed stretch of land from the northern end of Brooks Lane.

One of the field’s neighbours, Rachel Searle, said children from the Glenwood estate often used the paths to reach Downview Primary School and Felpham Community College.

“It’s a nice way for children to get to school but the field is also an important part of the Bognor Regis area,” she said.

“It’s an open site between two built-up areas and, once the field has gone, it has gone. THere is a right to roam by law and I would hope these paths are covered by that.”

THe paths had been open for public use during her time in the Bognor Regis area from 1986, she said.

THe field is known to have been used for growing hay for at least 15 years.

One of the paths went straight across from the footbridge to reach Downview School, after crossing another field, and another diagonally to Felpham Community College and the Arun Leisure Centre.

THe footbridge was blocked without warning earlier this month with safety fencing either side of the rife. THe other two access points have been similarly fenced off.

Mr Meagher said: “THis site is listed in Arun District Council’s land use blueprint as having biodiversity potential.

"We know there are water voles in the rife and birds such as marsh warblers live there as well.

“THat field is where three communities can meet to go from South Bersted to Bognor Regis and from Bognor Regis to Felpham.

“It’s not just dog walkers who used it.

It was enjoyed by anyone who wanted to be in the open air close to the town and look at the South Downs.

"It was a nice gentle walk for people who have mobility problems.”

Jean thanks people for backing her tribute to wartime soldiers PLAYWRIGHT Jean Rogers is set to present nearly £2,000 to an armed forces charity thanks to the success of her First World War play.

She will hand over the cheque for £1,428 to the Royal British Legion this Sunday after Father Martin Powell's last service at St Mary's Church in Aldingbourne.

Her play, Our Local Lads, was a sellout success at Eastergate Village Hall on remembrance weekend and raised £1,220 in ticket money.

It detailed the stories of some of the servicemen from the Six Villages who fought in the conflict and the struggles

faced by some of the families of those who died.

Mr Powell said: "Our Local Lads was a triumph, not only in its execution and performance but in the way that it made real the stories, the lives, that were changed so much by the events of the Great War." Mr Powell helped Mrs Rogers create the compelling images and sounds in her show as well as portraying the Rev Walter William Kelly, who was Aldingbourne's vicar from 1888-1920.

He has also praised the community for its generous response to the cententary of the armistice.

THe town's seasonal rink has returned for the second winter - and it's bigger and better this time to ensure more fun for those who get their skates on.

THe Ice Skating on the Prom festive wonderland opened on the Place St Maur yesterday and will continue to delight visitors of all ages into next year.

Kara Cole, who is operating the rink with her husband, James, said: "We've already had a lot of interest in the rink returning to Bognor Regis. People have been booking tickets.

"We are hopeful we will get more than the some 10,000 people who enjoyed themselves here last year.

"THere was such a lovely atmosphere which the skaters created and everybody supported us. THey seemed quite

overwhelmed we would come to Bognor Regis and so we wanted to come back."

THis year's rink is a third bigger than last year at 20m x 30m, compared to 20m x 20m, and can accommodate some 150 skaters at the same time on its thousands of litres of frozen water.

THe marquee in which it is housed has similarly expanded in size from four bays to six bays.

Kara said: "We had everything last year to be this big but the seafront mounds were in the way. Arun District Council removed the mounds and so we were able to have the larger rink and it makes for a nicer events area."

Plenty of other entertainment is being provided around the ice rink for those who don't want to swap their shoes for skates. Santa's grotto, children's rides, Christmas market huts, a life-size snow

globe, a German-style swing grill and a bar are among the attractions.

Paul Wells, chairman of the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District (BID), welcomed the return of the rink.

"It is fantastic to have a bigger and better rink here this year. It is a really good attraction to have in Bognor Regis for our Christmas 2018 season. THe BID board are pleased to be working with James and Kara Cole and, hopefully, the rink will increase footfall in the town centre.

"We have far more restaurants than we did last year and, with the activities we have planned as well, we hope people will stay with us all day rather than just visiting for one reason," he said.

THe rink is open daily from 10am-9pm, except Christmas Day, until January 6.

Tickets, from ÂŁ6.50 each, can be bought online or on the gate.

From page one linear park and 95 flats in two blocks, with the prospect of the health centre being moved from its present site opposite the Sunken Garden to the residential building's ground floor.

One of those present, Jackie Barlow, had her idea to open up the garden's southern end added to the resolutions.

She said: "THere could be an attractive archway there so people driving past and people walking up from the seafront can see into the gardens.

"It will make them more visible to everyone so those behind the antisocial behaviour there will not be hanging around so much."

Another amendment - to get the town council to reconsider Arun's plans for four information boards around the site - was also backed.

Bognor Regis Civic Society vicechairman Hugh Coster claimed the present plans broke advertising laws.

One of the councillors behind the meeting, Jan Cosgrove, said: "THis business has got to stop. I am confident it will not aid the town's regeneration.

"THis is the start of a process to hold our councillors to account. We will take this campaign forward and go back to Arun to get a debate just six weeks before the elections (in May)."

Community gardeners' founder Kim Davis said: "THe gardens do have a bad reputation. THere is a little bit of exaggeration about the anti-social behaviour there.

"We have been trying to liaise with

the authorities all the time we have been working down there but we have had very little support."

Peter Wells, who chairs the patient participation group at the health centre, said the proposals had caused uncertainty among its 9,200 patients.

"Arun is trying to put this matter on the health authority. THe health authority are trying to put it back to Arun. THe problem we have got is we have 9,200 patients who live in close proximity of that health centre - 70 per cent of them are older people with mobility problems.

"We also have the influx of people taken on at Butlin's. It's very important that health centre is replaced," he said.

"How it's done, I do not know at this stage. But it's important it's recognised that Arun can't take that facility away."

Danny Dawes, who leads Grandad's Front Room Community Interest Company, said the ÂŁ3.5m cost of the linear park could be better spent.

"At the end of the day, our seafront is our jewel in the crown. People come here because of our seafront. If you are going to spend money somewhere, spend some on the Sunken Garden, yes, but listen to what the people there, the community gardeners, say."

But Arun member Cllr Pat Dillon said: "None of that area is familyfriendly. What Arun are trying to do is to make it an area that people who come to this town and people who live here can go to and spend some time safely with their family."

` Extra solar power RENEWABLE energy could be generated from a Yapton site until the second half of the century.

Plans have been revealed by BL Solar 2 Ltd to extend the operating life of Bilsham Solar Farm.

It wants Arun District Council to allow the operation to continue to generate electricity from the sun for 40 years rather than the 25 originally allowed.

THis would enable the solar farm on land to the south-west of Drove Lane Farm to stay in use until November, 2054.

A statement with the plans by the company's planning agent, James Jameson, says: "THe proposed change to the planning permission would allow it to make an even more valuable contribution to the country's legally binding climate change targets.

"During the extra 15 years of operation, the proposals will power the equivalent of about 87,000 homes and offset some 142,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide."

Protests after housing 'yes' A JUDICIAL review is being considered

by Pagham councillors to challenge the approvals of hundreds of homes.

THe parish council’s planning consultant has told Arun District Council the legal move is being looked at.

As reported, Arun last week backed an outline scheme for 280 dwellings in Sefter Road to follow its backing for a 400-home outline development in Summer Lane.

A third outline application, for 300 homes in Hook Lane, has twice been considered and was deferred the second time for a road safety audit to be carried out on the site’s proposed access on to Pagham Road. It will be considered by councillors at a later meeting.

But planning expert Paul Collins, who is working for Pagham Parish Council, has told Arun the decisions could be subject to a legal fight.

He has outlined why he believes the district council has behaved wrongly in granting the permissions.

He states: “With this in mind, please be advised that Pagham Parish Council considers that in the face of such illegality, it has been left with no choice but to take legal advice with a view to undertaking judicial review proceedings in the event that any decisions are issued prior to a reconsideration of the applications by the development control committee with the remedy sought being a quashing order in respect of any decisions issued.”

THe grounds to be explored will be illegality, irrationality and procedural impropriety, he says.

THe potential move has been welcomed

by Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement chairman Alan Pivett.

He said: “THese are very powerful words to show (people) that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“All of us must remain positive. We are still leading from the front.”

Meanwhile, Cllr David Huntley, the chairman of Pagham Parish Council’s planning committee, said he believed information given to Arun’s members was flawed because the developers had failed to show they had met Arun's planning criteria.

“THere is no certain provision of adequate infrastructure and the assertion that all problems can be mitigated is untrue,” he said.

“It is quite obvious the infrastructure will not be able to cope.”

He claimed the proposed housing would cause sewage to be dumped in nearby Pagham Harbour local nature reserve and lead to be more people being killed on the area’s narrow and already overcrowded roads.

THey would also destroy the buoyant tourism industry by ruining the 1,200-year-old village through overdevelopment.

All these effects could be avoided if Arun instead chose to build on already used sites at the former Ford aerodrome and the Lec airfield in Shripney, he said.

An Arun spokesman said it did not want to comment about the potential judicial review.

Anger at decision to scrap hospital's chaplain position HOSPITAL volunteers in Bognor Regis are angry a century of chaplaincy is to end.

THe role of chaplain at the town’s war memorial hospital is among those to be axed by the NHS. Members of the hospital’s Friends fear the move could upset some of its patients who need comforting during their stay.

Staff can also turn to the chaplain, the Rev Graham Reeves, for reassurance.

Mr Reeves confirmed he had been given six months’ notice by the hospital's operator, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, to leave his role next May after 21 years.

“I don’t know what is going to happen to the chapel,” he said.

Stephen Sampson, the Friends’ treasurer, said: “We are extremely unhappy with this decision. We are exploring the legal options which are available to us to challenge it.

“We believe there has been a chaplain here since the hospital opened in 1919.

“THis is not just about helping the patients. THe staff can also visit the chaplain when they need to talk to someone or visit the chapel when they need a moment of peace.

“As far as we know, the chaplaincy at this hospital costs the trust £10,000 a year.

Compare this to the £2.66m surplus the trust had last year and it is a small amount.”

THe Friends has contributed substantially to the current chapel since it opened in October, 1991, as part of the main hospital building. THis has included the carpet, chairs and its garden.

THe chapel is open day and night all year round for everybody on site.

Mr Reeves is present from 11am-1pm on Mondays, from 9am-5pm on THursdays and from 10am-midday on the second and fourth Sundays monthly.

His role sees him visiting patients in the hospital’s two wards, meeting people in the chapel, and listening and offering support as well as prayers.

He can also bring Holy Communion to patients’ bedsides or contact their faith representatives.

One of the hospital’s supporters, Jim Armstead, said: “THis is an appalling decision by the trust. It will be a real blow to the community.

“THere will be no-one to offer spiritual support if a person needs it.THe patients are really going to miss the chaplain.

A statement by the trust said it was modernising its chaplaincy service from next April.

“Currently, we do not provide a trustrun chaplaincy service across all our inpatient units and those where a service is available is provided under different local arrangements," it said.

“We are, therefore, going ahead with our plan to appoint a lead multi-faith chaplain who will be focused on the spiritual welfare of patients, their families and carers and our colleagues in the community.

"THe new trust-run chaplaincy service will provide a more comprehensive and consistent service across Sussex, with dedicated leadership to ensure the needs of patients and colleagues are met."

` Village homes OUTLINE proposals for 70 new homes in Yapton have been backed.

THe scheme by Granite Gate will see housing built on land at Stakers Farm in North End Road.

THe decision by Arun District Council's development control committee last week was the second time it had considered the plans. THe first occurred last April when committee members voted to delegate the decision to their planning officers.

THat final approval had not been given because of a delay in completing a legal agreement to govern the contributions that Granite Gate must make to pay for the infrastructure to cope with the homes.

Council planning officer Simon Davis told the committee meeting on Wednesday: "It is considered that the proposal is clearly environmentally and socially sustainable.

"THere would be a cost to the local economy from the loss of high quality agricultural land but this is weighed against the previous and current use of the land - grazing by horses or sheep - and the economic benefits of the scheme, which are considered to override the costs."

THe scheme goes against Yapton's neighbourhood development plan to protect the countryside. But Mr Davis added the plan was out of date following the adoption of Arun's local plan in the summer.

Yapton Parish Council originally objected to the housing but withdrew the objection last month on condition of six criteria connected to it being met. A total of 24 letters of objection to the scheme were received by Arun.

Festive time set to begin FESTIVE lights will brighten up Bognor Regis town centre from tomorrow.

THe town's annual switch-on will take place at 5.30pm at the junction of the London Road precinct and High Street.

Helping to spark the illuminated displays into life in front of what is sure to be a large crowd will be some of the cast members of the Regis Centre's latest panto, Cinderella.

Plenty of fun is in store for all ages around the town centre before the big moment.

Kirsten Fitzpatrick, Bognor Regis Town Council's events officer, said: "Funfair rides, hot chestnuts and candy floss will fill the precinct. Magic and juggling will also be performed.

"In the Regis Centre, a make and take willow lantern workshop will be held for anyone who wants to make a lantern for the lantern parade at 5pm led by Cinderella in her magical horse-drawn carriage into the town centre to turn on the lights."

THe free fun starts at 2pm when Santa's grotto opens outside the Santander bank branch and LED glow performers and stilt walkers begin to use their skills as they wander among the shoppers.

THe willow lantern workshop opens for three hours in the Regis Centre.

Next comes the first performance by the Winter Fairy contact juggler at 2.30pm.

She combines serene dance, a crystal ball and contact juggling to cast her spell over all who see her.

She will also be performing at 4pm and 5pm to delight the watching audiences.

Chairman Greg Burt said: "We've got all the ingredients for a great old-fashioned Christmas.

"THe museum will be festooned with old-fashioned Christmas decorations.

Look in our Woolies window to see what your parents and grandparents were buying at this time of year."

Bing Crosby will be singing White Christmas in the wireless room of the museum in West Street. THose who go along can try their hand at nut-cracking, enjoy a pop-up cafe, buy some traditional toys and take their chances in a lucky dip.

Father Christmas will be present from 1pm-3pm on both days.

Over in the Sunken Garden next to THe Hatters pub tomorrow, Owls About Town with its beautiful birds of prey will be there from 11am-2pm for a free event as well as the chance to meet the site's community gardeners.

Arcade joins in Christmas joy for the first time in its history MORE than a century of tradition will vanish when THe Arcade in Bognor Regis joins in the town's Christmas celebrations. It will be the first time in the shopping centre's 117-year history it will be joining the town's annual festive lights switch on.

Tomorrow will see THe Arcade in the High Street lit at 5.30pm with beautiful rows of white lights and garlands to blend in perfectly with the rest of the town's Christmas decorations.

Nick Yates, from THe Arcade, said: "Many shoppers tell us that we are an integral part of the town. So, we decided to participate in the annual

Next week, on December 1, THe Arcade will start the special month by hosting a Dickensian day from 10am.

THe event will feature traditionally dressed costumed characters, a special visit from Father Christmas and free hot roasted chestnuts and candy cane - all sprinkled with a dusting of snow.

"As the first weekend in December is known for people starting Christmas shopping, we thought we would host a special event to help people get in the festive spirit," said Nick.

` Work is stopped BUILDING work on new homes in North Bersted has been halted.

Arun District Council has ordered developer Linden Homes to stop the residential development at New Barn Lane. THe temporary stop notice remains in place until December 6.

Planning approval for the housing was granted by Arun with conditions. But the council's officers say some of them have not been met. Cllr John Charles, who leads the council's planning service, said it regretted the course of action but had to act.

Students told how to be safe drivers POTENTIAL learner drivers at Felpham Community College came face-to-face with the results of bad motoring.

THe 12 students learned the importance of driving safety to stay alive.

THe hard-hitting and graphic workshop featured a short film interspersed by the members of the emergency services speaking about their experiences of attending road traffic accidents.

A range of other speakers also told about the effect serious accidents had on their lives.

One mother lost her sons in two separate road accidents and a man was injured in a car accident when he was aged 15.

Hannah Clark, one of the Year 12 students who went along, said: "THe workshop was a real eye opener.

"It definitely made us think twice about road safety and about who we

choose to get in a car with, as well as when we learn to drive."

Her fellow Year 12 student, Hannah Clark, said: "THe speakers were really good. Hearing first-aid how accidents have affected people was tough. Safe drivers get hit by unsafe drivers."

Louis Adams, also in Year 12, said: "It is not just about being a good driver yourself but always being aware of your surroundings and other road users.

"We all plan to learn to drive and this was educational to take part in."

Mark Anstiss, the college's headteacher, said it was important students attended the interactive workshop held by Sussex Police.

"Year 12 have attended this workshop for a number of years and we always receive positive feedback," he said.

"Some of the content may be graphic, but it gets the right messages across."



Bags of help from college A RECORD number of full charity bags showed Felpham Community College pupils have plenty of heart.

THe generous students and their families completed their first charity event of the academic year by taking part in the annual British Heart Foundation's Bag-a-THon. Co-ordinated by the college's sixth form committee, students across all year groups collected clothes, shoes, books and puzzles that were no longer wanted.

THis resulted in 70 bags being filled and collected by the charity. THey should equate to an impressive £2,000 when sold in its shops.

All the proceeds will go towards

pioneering research, prevention, support and care to anyone who lives with heart disease.

Nichole Matthews, the charity leader at the college, said: "THe charity committee worked hard publicising this event with students and encouraging as much support as possible.

"We were all really impressed with the amount collected and the support we received from students - and parents and staff."

Award winners in good company as business stars enjoy the limelight A SPECIAL night has celebrated the best community spirit, industryleading businesses and inspirational entrepreneurs in the area.

A record number of entries competed in the latest Arun Business Partnership 2018 Business of the Year Awards.

Bognor Regis-based community interest company, Grandad's Front Room, walked away with the highest accolade of the evening as the overall business of the year.

THe company, founded and led by Danny Dawes, helps people in need around the town by providing furniture, appliances, guidance, support and a friendly, listening ear at its shop in the High Street.

It beat off competition from more than 60 companies, community groups and charities from Bognor Regis, Arundel, Littlehampton and villages across the Arun district.

Arun District Council's business development manager, Miriam Nicholls, hosted the evening alongside Andrew Ball, from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Miriam said: "Despite the challenges facing the local economy, particularly on our high streets, the evening was marked by a sense of enthusiasm, determination and optimism which I believe truly represents the remarkable spirit of our local business community."

It was the 21st year of the partnership's Business of the Year Awards. THey continue to go from strength to strength to raise the profile of the businesses started, nurtured and thriving across the Arun district.

THe awards were sponsored by Arun District Council, the Bognor Regis Post and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, had 16 categories and were held at Butlin's in Bognor Regis.

Bognor Regis High Street-based Grandad's Front Room Community Interest Company won two awards.

Infinity Print Solutions was chosen as the best independent retailer for its branches in Littlehampton and Bognor Regis. Its Bognor Regis store manager, Rob Burgess, said: "We are really grateful to have won the award and are over the moon with it.

"We would like to say a big thank you to the businesses who have supported us through the year."

Top quality marketing and promotion won the Aldingbourne Trust another of the awards.

Debbie Wells, its external communications officer, said: "To win this award means the world to us all. To be recognised for the work the trust has done is incredible."

THe new business of the year was named as Felpham-based Colour Pop Occasions, run by mother and daughter, Hannah McLoughlin and Julie Drinkwater.

Hannah said: "We are still buzzing.

We have worked so hard to build up our business over the past two years and have had such fantastic feedback from our clients."

` Fraudulent builder A BUILDER from Felpham who took thousands of pounds for work he failed to do has been sentenced.

Leigh Yorke, 50, was ordered to compete 50 hours of community work and pay more than £10,000 to his victims at the hearing at Worthing Magistrates' Court.

He came to the attention of West Sussex Trading Standards after he promised three customers he would complete work to their properties but failed to do so. THe amount came to nearly £13,000 and involved installing doors and windows.

Yorke told his customers he was suffering from throat cancer but was unable to provide any medical evidence to trading standards.

Richard Sargeant, the trading standards team manager, said: "Defrauding customers is a serious crime and this individual was only spared jail because of extenuating circumstances."

` Suspect ran away A MAN who smashed the rear window of a vehicle in Chestnut Grove, Bognor Regis, ran off when he realised he had been seen in the early hours of November 5. He was described as being in his 30s, 5ft 7in5ft 9in tall, with short hair and slimly built.

` Money is stolen A LARGE amount of money was stolen from an insecure property in Stroud Green Drive in North Bersted from 3pm-5pm on November 9.

Leader impressed by club NATIONAL charity boss Nick Bunting said he hoped its Bognor Regis branch would be flying high for decades.

Mr Bunting, the general secretary of the Royal Air Forces Association, visited the town for the first time.

He praised the work of its branch and the community activities which it held in its distinctive club.

"I want to make sure the community is at the heart of the branch and that the branch is at the heart of the community.

"It is the same with all membership clubs with a building to run. It is a fantastic building in a wonderful setting but it is right next to the sea and that creates problems with things like salt," he said.

"But this is in the biggest 25 per cent of our branches in the south east. I would like to think it will be here in 50 years' time and still with these gorgeous views across the seafront.

"THey will be supporting the RAF family, helping the community and inspiring the future generations as well."

Mr Bunting visited the RAFA branch and club in Waterloo Square last Wednesday.

He called in to one of its quarterly Brew for the Few cuppa and chat events to raise money for the charity's Wings Appeal.

Some 70-80 people went along to enjoy a social time and back the good cause.

Cllr Pat Dillon, Arun District Council's deputy chairman, also visited to tell Mr Bunting about RAFA's importance to the town.

Mr Bunning has been in his role for foura-half-years and was making his 70th visit to a branch or RAF base.

THere are just over 400 RAFA branches across the UK and overseas which total 74,000-plus members to be the country's largest single service membership charity.

About 100 of the branches have buildings. Others are based in pubs and community centres.

Among its activities were dealing with 13,000 welfare requests last year as well as 115,000 general requests for help.

Branches like that in Bognor Regis had a voluntary welfare officer trained to national standards, he said.

Befriending services to combat loneliness and supporting air cadets were also important activities.

Branch secretary David Hewings said: "It's very important that people from HQ (in Leicester) come down and see how we are. We are out on a limb here because we are on the coast.

"Like any club we are facing the future.

We are dealing with an increasing amount of paperwork, tougher safety requirements and investing a lot of money in our building.

"We spend over £10,000 a year keeping it in an acceptable condition - and it would be a lot more if a volunteer didn't do so much of the work."

THe branch welcomed past and serving members of all the armed forces and was the biggest services organisation in the town, he said.

He said: "Our membership is stable at about 800 and we want to spread the message about what we do and how the community can get involved."

A line dancing club, a successful choir and a skiffle band were among the activities which took place, he added.

RAFA began in Bognor Regis in 1954 in London Road in two huts from RAF Tangmere. Its present building became available in 1972 when its previous occupier, the Hotham Gentlemen's Club, went bankrupt.

Students' help for homeless MORE than a ton of food has been donated to homeless people around Chichester and Bognor Regis.

Kind-hearted students at THe Regis School in Bognor Regis and their families and tutors donated the mountain of meals and toiletries for Stonepillow.

THe Food Drive charitable effort will boost its work with homeless people around the area.

Driver Steve Heath said it was the most food he had picked up for the charity.

"THe amount of food that has been collected is amazing. We really appreciate it. THis food will be split up between our hubs in Chichester and Bognor Regis and will then be sorted to go to our lodges and night shelters," he said.

THe collection on Friday was the first time since it was started by the Westloats School some five years ago it had carried out the collection on its own rather than also involving its family of feeder schools.

School counsellor Kev Robbins said it had been a success. THe 1,215kgs - or 1.215 tons - was believed to be the most which had been donated.

"We do this because we are a Unicef rights respecting school and it is one of the ways in which we can take action for the community. It has been an absolutely fantastic result. THe quality of the produce is really good as well. All of the 1,550 students took part and this has been an exceptional response from them."

Stonepillow has been helped in previous years. It was chosen by the school's A Team student voice members after homelessness

was seen in a national poll of young people as one of their biggest concerns.

Some 30 of the school's rights respecting ambassadors sorted the donations into categories. THey included Chris Gilbert, 11, Poppy Wallis, 14, Phoebe Reeves, 13, and Johan Keijser-Petch, 16.

Phoebe said: "A lot of baked beans have been donated, along with soup and quite a lot of pasta. THose foods will last for quite a long time and that will help more people.

"All the students brought food in for their tutor groups and the tutors doubled the amount."

Johan said: "THis has been an exhausting day but, mostly, it has been rewarding. We know this food is going to people who need it more than us.

"I've given stuff to homeless people and seeing the joy on their faces is absolutely unreal. To know that every single person who gets this food will feel it make the effort worthwhile.

Poppy said: "THis is about helping people with the things they need."

Chris said: "We know there are people who are not as lucky as us."

Mike Garlick, the school's principal, said: "I am proud of our students for bringing in a significant amount of food. We staged an education programme in the week leading up to today so they understand why they are doing this and the reasons why people can become homeless."

THe Food Drive formed part of the school's activities with the WE movement to empower change. A non-uniform day was also held at the same time.

FINANCIAL services staff swopped pounds for paint when they helped a charity near Fontwell.

Employees of the Nationwide Building Society spent time helping to re-decorate old offices of the Aldingbourne Trust.

THey grabbed their paint brushes and brightened up the rooms ready to be used again.

Sian Burchell, who organised the team from the building society in Chichester, said: "We had a fab day.

Our thanks to the trust for having us and they'll be seeing us next year."

Aldingbourne Trust helps people with learning disabilities and/or autism to have the same chances as everyone else to live independent lives.

Its staff welcomed the Nationwide team, pictured below, who wanted to volunteer their time and hands to make a difference to the trust.

THe building which benefited from their efforts was used by the trust before its new main building opened last summer.

THe latest facilities enable those it supports to enjoy more quiet rooms, a bigger games room and a training kitchen.

Green-fingered pupils will transform garden

THe students, who are studying at Brinsbury - part of the Chichester College Group - are designing and building a beautiful, peaceful garden with a seaside theme to improve the surrounding environment for patients receiving treatment for cancer at St Richard's Hospital.

THe garden will be located behind the Ford ward - currently home to a small courtyard and some potted plants.

Steve Millam, a horticulture lecturer at Brinsbury, has championed the project, first proposed a year ago.

He said: "THis is a fantastic opportunity for our students to really make a difference to a lot of people's lives - as well as be able to work on a real design project themselves.

"It has taken a little time to raise the money we needed to be able to create something special, but thanks to the generosity of those who have donated we

will soon be able to start work.

"THe students will present their design ideas to the staff at the hospital, and then we'll be underway.

"It is a small space, but there is a huge amount of potential. We want to bring in lots of colour, and create a happy environment for patients and their families to enjoy."

Claire Ballantyne, haematology clinical nurse specialist for the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added: “We are very excited that the courtyard garden area will be revamped by such a talented bunch of garden designers - we can’t wait to see the results.

“It’s really important for our cancer patients, who are well enough, to be able to access the outdoor area. THey are often in hospital for long periods undergoing chemotherapy treatments and it will be wonderful when they have somewhere appropriate to go to get fresh air.”

THrough the efforts of kind-hearted staff, patients and visitors to St Richards', around £500 has been raised for the garden.

Steve said: We would welcome any donations, whether that's plants, vouchers or even cash towards buying materials for the garden.

“In keeping with the seaside theme, we’re also on the lookout for a small wooden boat which could be used in the garden.”

Thousands raised for cancer charity OVER £2,000 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support earlier this month, thanks to an annual charity concert held at the Fishbourne Centre.

THe money was given in exchange for tickets to the concerts and raffle tickets and came to £2,240. Santander added £500 as part of their community involvement programme.

Elizabeth Dickson, personal banker at Santander’s Chichester branch, said: "We are delighted to have supported Ronnie and Sally at the fantastic charity concert in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. We were so impressed by

the local community coming together for the event and we are proud to have been involved both on the day and contributing as part of Santander’s matched donation scheme."

Volunteer for Macmillan Cancer Support and co-organiser, Ronnie Williamson, said: "What a cracking turnout on a dreadful wet night to support Sally and I in raising money at our charity concert in the Fishbourne Centre. Right royal party is enjoyed CUPPAS and chats were enjoyed by royal command at a Bognor Regis party.

Some 50 people came together to take part in a community event to celebrate the Prince of Wales' 70th birthday.

Tiaras were worn for the occasion by friends Diane Smith and Julie Insull.

Julie, 83, of West Meads, said: "I thought we should enter into the spirit of the occasion.

Diane, 73, of Pagham, said: "I've got my pearls on as well. I'm sure the Queen would appreciate that, or at least the Queen Mother would have done. THis is a nice event and it's much better than sitting at home."

THe tea party was arranged by the Rev Tim Crook, of St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street, South Bersted, and held in its adjoining hall last Wednesday.

Mr Crook said: "It is a national initiative by

the Duchess of Cornwall who felt that, despite the wonders of modern technology, there is nothing better than sitting down and having a chat over a cup of tea.

"She wanted people to hold a tea party to celebrate those in their 70s who have contributed to their communities. It is a simple event because it was not about holding a complicated occasion."

Not everyone at the party was that age but those who went along enjoyed the chance to brighten an autumn afternoon with a birthday tea party. Music on the piano was provided by Pat Alderton. Alan Jackson led the singing.

A special birthday cake was made for the occasion. Sally Beale had the privilege of performing the cutting because she celebrated her 70th birthday the day before the party.

` Long service workers TWO EMPLOYEES at Covers in Chichester have celebrated a combined 70 years of service.

Simon Willers and Colin Taylor have served 40 years and 30 years respectively at the timber and builders’ merchant on Quarry Lane.

THey were each presented with a gift for their loyalty and commitment by Covers chairman Rupert Green.

He said: “Both Simon and Colin are shining examples of the calibre of staff here at Covers. I am delighted to be sharing this special milestone with them and rewarding them for their commitment to the company.”

Simon Willers, who is a general counter assistant in Chichester, added: “I have spent 40 very happy years here at Covers and have made some great friends along the way.

"I love what I do and much of that is down to the fantastic team I have around me.”

SALT BINS are being topped up in West Sussex communities as the county enters the final stages of winter preparations.

In addition to the county council gritting major routes, salt provided by West Sussex Highways helps towns, parishes and other communities keep the county moving if ice and snow cover local roads and pavements.

Women continue their campaign in London

Award for Rachel A SENIOR customer services advisor at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital has recently won the Great Conversations for Service award, for outstanding customer service to patients.

Rachel Baldwin joined Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital over 20 years ago, initially as a receptionist, before being asked to lead the hospital’s patient appointment bookings department.

More recently, and because of exceptional knowledge and experience gained at the hospital, Rachel has been promoted to the role of senior customer services advisor with overall responsibility for managing all patient enquiries as well as supporting public events.

Rachel said: “I am delighted to win this award. Here at Chichester we take

great care to assist and support our patients. I know that I speak for the entire hospital team when I say that a positive customer experience for all our valued patients is our top priority.”

THe Great Conversations for Service award is given to one staff member from each of the four Nuffield Health regions and is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated consistent and exceptional professionalism and patient support over an extended period.

Hospital director John Bruell said: “We are very proud of the work Rachel does here at Chichester and it is wonderful that this has been recognised in this way.

"Rachel is a great asset to our team and is enormously helpful in sharing her skills and experience with colleagues.”

CAMPAIGNING women travelled to London yesterday (THursday) to take part in a rally coinciding with the Scottish National Party debate.

Members of Bognor & Chichester’s Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) covers Chichester, Bognor, Littlehampton, Rustington, Worthing and now the A24 corridor, including Horsham and villages, Crawley and MidSussex.

THe women went to Westminster Hall to take part in the rally over "state pension equalisation for women born in the 1950s".

Group co-ordinator Jill Robertson said: "On November 6, 2018, men and women's state pension ages were the same for the very first time since the state pension was introduced. We do not object to that.

"However, women born in the 1950s have not had equality in other areas of life, and the way state pension age changes have been introduced has left a whole generation at a further financial disadvantage.

"We are grateful to Patricia Gibson MP for securing this debate and keeping the issue in the parliamentary spotlight. We urge all MPs in the West Sussex region to attend."

In her application to the Backbench Business Committee for the debate,

Patricia Gibson said: "THe UK Government has repeatedly ignored the pleas of these women who continue to conduct their campaign for pension justice with fairness and dignity. As MPs, it is important that we show these women we support their cause and will continue to be their voice in Parliament.

THese women are not going away, and nor should they. We need to keep this

issue on the agenda and my debate on the WASPI women on November 22 will help to do that."

BINGSTERS fans will be in their element as Bing and his friends prepare for their first ever tour.

Bing Live! will visit the Kings THeatre, Portsmouth, this weekend for four performances only as part of a major UK tour through to April, 2019.

Join the CBeebies favourites Bing, Sula, Coco and Pando as they learn how to tell stories by pretending, dressing-up and singing songs. Bing Live! is produced

by Minor Entertainment (In the Night Garden Live) and directed by Will Tuckett, guest principal character artist of the Royal Ballet, whose production of Wind in the Willows won an Olivier Award for best entertainment in 2014.

Bing Live is adapted for the stage by Helen Eastman with costumes and puppet design by Tahra Zafar. As head of costume, hair and make-up for the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies staged in London, 2012, Tahra managed the production of 23,000 costumes for all four ceremonies.

THe show will have music by Alex Silverman, sound by Rich Walsh and

Red and white are just perfect for dark nights " Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys."

By Martin Lury martin.lury@me.com ENTERING the realm of a Majestic Wine Warehouse is delectably reminiscent of those halcyon days in the sixties when we used to gaze in wonder at the assortment of mouth-wateringly large sweet jars adorning the local confectionery store.

Off I duly headed to Majestic Chichester in the knowledge that, just like in the old sweet shops, one can sample some of the wares. Wine guru Harry and I, pictured above, began this arduous task with due relish to select three white wines for you.

THe first choice for circa £7 was a 2017 Hacienda Lopez De Haro white Rioja with dates and banana on the bouquet which proved to be complex, fresh and expressive.

Our next selection was that of a Grande Réserve 2017 Domaine Saint Jean De La Cavalerie Chardonnay, priced at £7.99, and a wine produced by winemaker David

Alcaraz, whose deft touch reaches out to night-harvesting the grapes for freshness and subtle use of oak to flesh out the Chardonnay.

THis southern French gem is a newer style, but generous Chardonnay which is aromatic with white flower and light citrus with apricot and peach flavours to the fore, light oak and a touch of wood and culminating in a light vanilla finish and would go well with a plate of whelks.

At this juncture, it is opportune to remind you all prices quoted are part of

the mix six bottles offer.

THe final white selection was Harry's recommendation of a 2017 Sicilian Regaleali Case Vecchie, which is a blend of three Sicilian grapes, namely Inzolia, Catarratto and Grecanico, with some Chardonnay on sale for £8.99.

Cool-fermented in stainless steel, this refreshing wine has aromas of green apples plus undertones of pears and grapefruit and is an ideal apéritif that could pair well with antipasti, Asian cuisine, fish , shellfish or even pizza!

Averting my attention to three red wines, I happened upon a 2016 Château Recougne Bordeaux Supérieur - 2016 wines from this region are characterised by energy and a purity of fruit.

Fruit forward with a red cherry and blackberry nose and oozing ripe black fruit with hints of mocha and toast, this is a pure and fresh style of this wine with concentration and energy and a complex earthiness for circa £8.

Next for just under £10, I opted for a 2016 Passimento red hailing from the

practice of appassimento which involves the grapes losing about 30 per cent of their water content and thus concentrating the juice and intensifying the wine’s flavour.

THis is a barnstormer of a wine with hints of leather and spice and strong tannins!

My ultimate selection on offer for £13.99 was a 2014 Château Tour Bayard Montagne-Saint-Émilion with strong tannins which mellow when aired. Rich and soft blackcurrant fruit, earthy notes, spicy wood flavours, good structure and ample acidity permeate this fine wine.

Main dish of the week Sweet potato and chickpea curry Ingredients: • 1 tbsp oil • 1 tbsp cumin seeds • 1 onion, finely sliced • Salt and black pepper • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • ½-1 tsp chilli flakes (to taste) • 50g/1¾oz root ginger, peeled and grated • 600g/1lb 5oz tinned chickpeas (undrained weight) • 1 x 400g/14oz tin tomatoes • 750g/1lb 10oz sweet potato, peeled and cut into bite-sized cubes • 200g/7oz rice

Dessert of the week Autumn apple roses Ingredients: • 1 large red apple, cored and thinly sliced • 4 tablespoons caster sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 sheet puff pastry • 50g melted butter • 1 egg • 2 teaspoons water • 1 teaspoon icing sugar (optional)

Method: 1. Heat a large saucepan over a medium heat and add the oil. Once hot, add the cumin seeds and fry for a minute, or until aromatic. Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook for 5-6 minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent. Add the garlic, chilli flakes and ginger and fry for a further three minutes.

2. Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Add to the pan with the tomatoes and sweet potato.

Add enough water (approximately 500ml/18fl oz) to cover the chickpeas and sweet potatoes and bring to a simmer, stirring to mix everything together.

3. Cover with a lid and simmer over a medium low heat, stirring now and again, for 25-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are soft and beginning to

4. Meanwhile, cook the rice according to the packet instructions.

5. Taste the curry and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve immediately with the rice.

4. Spread melted butter over the pastry; top with a generous amount of cinnamon-sugar. Place apple slices along 1 long edge of pastry, about 5mm beyond edge of pastry, overlapping slices slightly. Fold bottom half of pastry over the apple slices to form a long "folder" of dough with rounded edges of apple slices exposed.

5. Beat egg and water together in a bowl. Brush surface of pastry with egg wash. Sprinkle with more cinnamon-sugar, to taste.

6. Starting from one end, roll pastry not too tightly to form a rose-shape. Seal roll with end of pastry strip.

2. Place apple slices on a plate, overlapping slightly if necessary. Microwave on High about 45 seconds just until slices have softened a bit. Cover the plate with cling film and a kitchen towel.

7. Transfer roses to prepared ramekins. Sprinkle with a little more cinnamon-sugar. Place ramekins directly on middle rack of preheated oven.

3. Mix caster sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

Roll the puff pastry sheet to less than 3mm thickness. Using a pizza cutter, cut two 7cm x 30cm rectangles. Reserve remaining pieces for another use.

8. Bake until well browned, about 45 minutes.

Remove ramekins with tongs and place on baking tray to cool 5 to 10 minutes. Remove apple roses from ramekins and finish cooling on rack. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

Focus can help to be strong in a crisis IF YOU read my column last week, you will know that I have been in Washington DC delivering talks for an incredible empowering event called the #WEC18 Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference 2018.

It was amazingly uplifting for everyone who attended, and I was truly honoured to be asked to join them. THe speakers were all very different, from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but all so interesting. What I found the most moving, was when I spoke to people in the audience after I had given my talk.

It was then I began to realise how inspiring it is to hear of everyone's struggles and hardships to get to where they are, and when you share your struggles and successes it gives people hope.

When I give a talk, I try to deliver from a very authentic place and speak directly from my heart. THis way I think people can connect with you better, and are more likely to share their own experiences.

THere was one particular woman who was running a very successful business, but at the age of 11 her entire family had been wiped out in a plane crash. She was meant to be joining them a day later in Hawaii. I am not talking one or two members, but her mother, father and brother. She had one remaining brother, who also died two years later.

It blew my mind that anyone could recover from such tragedy, but in fact when I asked her how she has tried to move on she stated ‘you never get over’ such an incident, you just learn to live with your situation. She told me that she

drew strength from the overwhelming feelings of being alone in this world.

It was from her inner strength that she started to form her company. She had no money, was appointed to live with her neighbours after her older brother passed away, (she disliked the neighbours immensely) and thought the only way out, to give herself financial and emotional freedom, was to strive to make her own life exceedingly successful. And that is exactly what she has done. THere were tons of other incredible stories too.

I met a wonderful woman who had been abused and beaten during her childhood. She was a larger than life person, who is now running her own design and styling company for oversized women all over the world. She came from nothing and built her empire!

So what gives certain people the strength to be so bold, so strong and so determined? THere is certainly no special formula, but some people do seem able to cope with a crisis more than others. Sometimes, the more trauma you experience, the better equipped you are at handling things.

To stay mentally strong in all given situations is extremely hard, but maybe if you follow a few of these tips it could just help: 1. Focus on what you can control, not on what you can’t.

2. After the experience, ask yourself what you have learned and how it has helped you grow as a person.

3. Tackle problems head on. THey won't just go away and looking for solutions is

far more beneficial than ignoring them.

4. Practise gratitude. No matter how tough life can feel, there is always something positive to be grateful for.

5. Owning and acknowledging your pain can be helpful.

6. Sometimes, a crisis can change the course of your whole life. Look for new opportunities.

7. Recognise your inner strength. Use affirmations such as “I can handle this”.

8. Trust in your own ability to cope.

Sometimes the more trauma you experience, the better equipped you are at handling things.

On the back of this wonderful event, we are creating a ‘You Tube’ channel, called “Its never too late”, especially to give a platform for people to tell their stories from hardship to success, in whichever way that may be, such as love, relationships, career, financial, business etc.

I think this gives everyone out there hope, that no matter how bad your life situation is right now, there are always things you can do to help inspire yourself or others. If you have a story you would

Community News & Views ‘LESSONS have been learned’ after delivery of the Bognor Regis to Littlehampton cycle path took 15 months longer and cost £1.2m more than planned.

THis was the reaction from officers at West Sussex County Council after councillors asked them to review how the scheme had been conceived, funded and delivered.

Members of the environment, communities and fire select committee heard the council had been told in 2014 that the cycle path would cost £865,000 to design and build and it could be done in a year. With the money secured from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (C2C LEP), the scheme was approved – but it became clear more money was needed.

When C2C LEP rejected the idea, it fell to the council to fork out £1.2m. THe scheme took two years and three months to deliver, including nine months of construction, and cost just over £2m.

At a County Hall meeting, officers were asked why no alarm bells had sounded early on when it became apparent the scheme had been costed at a much cheaper rate than similar ones elsewhere.

Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C, Middleton) said the number of cyclists travelling the route had increased now they had a safe place to ride.

But she was critical of the way traffic had been controlled during the construction, particularly around three sets of traffic lights.

Cllr Mrs Pendleton said: “THere was no co-ordination of traffic flow through those traffic lights, creating a stop-start, stop-start, stop-start process which challenged the most patient of drivers.”

She also questioned the ‘lack of communication’ from the council when it came to keeping the public up to date.

Cllr Roger Elkins, the cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “I’m sure the issues that have been outlined will absolutely be addressed, and I will be looking at officers and be keeping a close watch on this.”

A NEW venue in Bognor Regis will be hosting popular pre-school sessions from next week.

Harmony Hive Community Interest Company is bringing its popular multi-sensory, pre-school music and art session to Tao, in the High Street, from Tuesday.

Mel Twinley and Inna Erskine, the directors of Harmony Hive, are excited about the new collaboration which will bring the group out of a short hibernation.

Inna, pictured above right with Mel, said: "Mel and I were both born and raised in Bognor Regis and felt passionately about wanting to keep the group in the heart of our town.

"We have been searching for a new venue since the summer and are terrifically excited to be collaborating with another local business to bring high quality, professionally delivered music and art classes to pre-schoolers in our area."

One of the mums whose child attended the sessions has welcomed their return. Holly Smith said: "After the first session, we loved it so much, we went every week following.

"Inna and Mel are so welcoming, friendly and relaxed around children of all ages. THey are also very supportive of parents, grandparents and childminders.

"We were disappointed when we heard that this group would no longer be on. THere isn't a group like it."

Mel said November was an exciting time for Harmony Hive. As well as the multi-sensory comeback, it was also involved with the Rox/Love Bognor Regis big band ball tomorrow.

"We are one of the nominated non-profit organisations that stand to benefit from ticket sales," she said.

"Inna, our resident musician, is leading the string section of the big band, as well as playing with her quartet at the beginning of the evening."

Harmony Hive will stage three specially themed events at Tao on from 9.40am-11.15am on November 27 and December 4 and 11.

A NEW approach to supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse has been launched in West Sussex.

THe three-year programme adopts a whole family approach and has been developed by survivors of domestic abuse.

THe partnership between West Sussex County Council, UK-wide domestic abuse charity SafeLives, and specialist frontline services makes West Sussex one of only two areas in the country to pilot the work.

THe West Sussex Connect project will provide a package of support for individuals and families experiencing domestic abuse, helping people recognise the signs of abuse before it escalates and offer a range of new interventions to address needs.

Specialist support will be given to children and young people as well as those with complex needs, such as substance misuse and mental ill health. Support will also be given to people who are still in a relationship or living with the perpetrator of abuse. As part of the work, a project is also underway to work directly with perpetrators to challenge their behaviour and encourage change.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, the county council's cabinet member for safer stronger communities, said: “We are delighted to be working with SafeLives and other partners on this innovative programme which will develop complete care pathways to support victims and help them recover from harm. West Sussex Connect will enhance the established high-risk domestic abuse services we already offer to some of the most vulnerable people in West Sussex and will be driven by their voices throughout.”

THe three-year West Sussex Connect pilot officially began last week with a launch event in Chichester. Representatives from each of the partners gave speeches around the work, including Rachel Williams, a SafeLives Pioneer and domestic abuse survivor.

Talking about the project, Rachel, pictured below, said: “As a survivor myself of domestic abuse and violence, whilst I was on my own journey to freedom, no one ever asked me what 'I' wanted.

"Some services presume that they know what is right for those sadly finding themselves on similar journeys, without actually taking the time to ask them. I am elated to say that Connect is a result of asking what the victims and survivors want and need."

THe work will be delivered by THe YOU Trust, Aurora New Dawn, THe Hampton Trust and the eight Connect members of staff.

TALENTED pianists will be performing in the next concert at Bognor Regis Music Club.

THe Pallant Piano Group circle of pianists from the surrounding area will be appearing at 7pm tomorrow at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road.

THe pianists come together to play to each other and are mentored by Terry Allbright and Angela Zanders, who are both performers and tutors at the University of Chichester.

THe Pallant Piano Group was formed some six years ago and meets at the Tangmere house of the music club's chairman, Chris Coote.

THose performers who will be taking part in the concert will include Jack Adams, Alison Blenkinsop, Diana Bollam, Jane Carroll, Chris Coote, Neil Franks, Huw Griffiths, Catherine Harry, Jan Lewis, Yuriko Luc, Rosemary Osmon, Alex Palmer, Carole Rogers, Louise Russell and Gilly Slot.

Many different composers will be represented. THey include Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Moszkowski, Grieg, Bridge, Ireland, Albeniz and Delius.

Colourful past reflects fashions of the times Buildings were constructed according to the tastes of past centuries I THOUGHT we should look at fashionable buildings, but what is fashionable? According to the dictionary, it is conforming to fashion or being in vogue.

According to Gerard Young, the local historian, he reported in 1959 that he felt 'fashion in architecture was affected by the temperature of the times'. THerefore, as you walk around the town and look at the wide range of colour schemes and styles that are visible, we should perhaps consider the past to see what their fashions were and ask whether in fact the residents of the time liked them or not.

I wonder how the fishermen and locals in the 1790s felt about the construction of the new large buildings for Sir Richard Hotham, along the road we now refer to as the Upper Bognor Road – buildings which for years contained students as they were part of the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education complex. Did the residents really like the new constructions, which were designed to bring outsiders into the area? Did they really believe it was for the good of the locality?

I would think the residents of what was then a small fishing village would be very nervous of the influx of the new moneyed people, using the area for only their leisure. Now, part of this area is the University of Chichester

campus, but many of the buildings have been sold off and transformed into flats.

Each era has made its mark on the development of the town and there are areas where specific developments have left quite an impression.

Such areas are still to be seen in sections of Victoria Drive, THe Steyne and Waterloo Square, where there are constructions that were erected in a range of styles, over a number of decades which ably demonstrate the changing fashions.

What about the New Town Estate, North Bersted, which was built in a distinctive style in the 1930s and where the estate still exists without change and is viewed as a desirable part of the town?

Compare this with the construction of the Aldwick Bay Estate which was specifically constructed for the rich to enjoy as their seaside retreat and where part of the advertising included reference to Goodwood races, hunting on the Downs - all seen as rich men’s pastimes of their era.

For years, homes were built on either side of long streets or roads, with back entrances.

THese areas allowed you to walk or drive along their length from one end to the other. Today, we have blocks of flats without parking spaces, many ‘complexes’ which are

constructed on the site of maybe one or two homes. THeir postal addresses contain words like ‘court’ which can denote a small area with many buildings around a central area.

We have on the perimeter of the town a range of estates that have all been built in the 21st century, but which come from a variety of modernist styles.

Areas, which are so distinctive as to have been provided with affectionate nicknames, to denote their appearance, e.g. 'Legoland', 'bungalow estates'.

I wonder how many people in the past have viewed their constructions as being the ‘current fashion'. Let us, therefore, view some of the ‘new fashions’ of their time. Look at London Road, which still contains bow fronted windows, such as above Dorothy Perkins and then the bland appearance of WH Smith or New Look.

However, if we look at today’s New Look there is a tendency to find this an agreeable building of the 1930s. It was constructed for Marks and Spencer in 1936.

Other factors through the years have placed their mark on fashion, one such being that of external building/paint colours. Many of the earlier buildings have retained their brick facades or the white, cream or bland colour schemes.

In fact, in many areas of the UK there are council policies in place, which restrict the painting of buildings in certain colours or shades. Recently, I was told of a house owner who had been told that the colour of his house was not in keeping with the neighbourhood.

THe requested colour was a pastel shade.

Sometimes, a person can have an individual stamp of fashion and for many here in Bognor Regis it was a local sign writer who made his mark with his bright colour. THis included in the past trades like Sarnies in London Road,

Clock Walk and Eddies newsagents in Lyon Street among others.

I can remember seeing a television holiday programme, which commenced with various views of houses and shops with a very definite colour scheme on their buildings, and the introduction referred to the 'fashionable seaside resort'. No, it was not Bognor Regis but perhaps we should view this in the same way as people in the past that took time to advertise their town as being fashionable.

One of our major fashionable constructions is the Skyline at Butlin’s where, of course, people hold many views, for and against, but compare these with the arrival of the railway carriages at Pagham and Felpham.

I wonder what people thought of these as they arrived to ‘clutter the seafront’ and no doubt they were referred to as ‘destroying the view’.

I am not endeavouring to be for or against the colours that were being used around the town, but I can imagine some of the comments, and can think of those passed to me recently. However, we are just transient in this town and historians will be the decisionmakers on the current styles. Just as we all have our views on what has gone before with areas built since the 1790s, where each era has a style of its own to be viewed by people with their own individual opinion.

I shall finish this week with another quote from Gerard Young, when he remarked that ‘towns have personalities that are detected by the visitor, but remain unknown to the resident. THis personality of character makes its mark on the stranger chiefly by outward appearances; the shape of the streets; the colour of the buildings; the harmony of the town’s setting in a landscape; the blend of architectural styles, the differences in comparison with other towns'.

The All-New Kia ProCeed THE all-new Kia ProCeed merges stunning design with the space and versatility of a tourer in a five-door shooting brake body. THe ProCeed made its public debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show and will go on sale to UK drivers at the beginning of 2019.

THe ProCeed has been designed, developed and engineered in Europe. A product of Kia’s European design, product development and R&D teams in Frankfurt, Germany, the ProCeed will be manufactured at the brand’s Žilina production facility in Slovakia. It will be built alongside the Kia Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon, first introduced earlier this year.

Matching the daring design and engineering which renders it the sportiest iteration of the new Ceed model family, the Kia ProCeed will be available exclusively as a ‘GT-Line’ or high-performance GT model and will be covered by Kia’s quality promise, with the brand’s industry-leading 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard.

Full UK specification, pricing and on-sale date will be announced in due course.

At 4,605 mm long, the ProCeed is 5 mm longer than the Ceed Sportswagon, with a longer 885 mm front overhang. At 1,422 mm in height, its roofline sits 43 mm lower than that of the Sportswagon, while ground clearance is reduced by 5 mm, to 135 mm. Constructed on the same ‘K2’ platform as other Ceed models, the 2,650 mm wheelbase remains unchanged.

THe rear of the car is what differentiates it

fully from other models in the Ceed range.

Combined with its lower overall height, the new wide rear bumper gives the car an assertive, sporty stance, with dual-tip exhausts for GT and ‘GT-Line’ models enhancing its sense of dynamism and sportiness.

From launch, the ProCeed will be available in a choice of 10 paint finishes. THe ProCeed ‘GT-Line’ will have 17- or 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels, while ProCeed GT models are fitted with 18-inch wheels as standard.

THe ProCeed diverges from other models in the Ceed family line-up with a series of changes designed to introduce a sportier ambience to the cabin. THe grey roof-liner of the Ceed and Sportswagon is replaced with black cloth to envelope and cocoon occupants, and the door sills feature metallic scuff plates.

Chi's charge continues! Blues hunt PostSport third win in a row at home to Hove CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to make it three wins from three as they continue to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

After a disappointing start to the season where they were hampered by injuries, Blues have found their stride in the last month.

Last weekend's 19-16 victory away at fellow strugglers Chobham has lifted Scott Ashley's side up to tenth in the 14 team London South One. With a home game against winless bottom side Hove tomorrow (2.30pm), the Oaklands Park faithful will be hopeful of a third victory on the bounce which should see them climb up the table even further.

Chi made seven changes to the side that beat London Cornish at Oaklands Park. Ed Bowden and Baz Magda came into the pack, with Henry Anscombe returning in the backs, after a 13 month sabbatical. Adam Geal, Hamish Minton and Finn Bamber were on the bench while Charlie Wallace returned to captain the side.

Blues made the brighter start but were unable to make any inroads on the scoreboard. Instead, it was the hosts who struck first, taking an early 8-0 lead.

Blues replied with two quick-fire penalties slotted home by Charlie Norton. 8-6.

Chi then started to take control and after Harry Seaman released the backs they looked odds-on to score with an overlap. THe final pass went astray though and Chobham capitalised, going straight up the field and dotting down to take a 13-6 lead.

An exchange of penalties just before the break meant that at half time Chi were 16-9 down. But rather than rue their missed chances they came out after the break determined to make amends.

Norton slotted home an early penalty to reduce the deficit to just four points.

With 20 minutes remaining, Chi took the lead for the first time in the match. An attacking line out saw Anscombe release Chris Johnson. THe number 8 then fooled the defenders with a deft one handed offload to Wallace.

THe captain outstripped two defenders to touch down. 16 - 19.

Chobham threw everything they could at Blues in the final minutes but, even with 14 players, Chi held out for a vital win which lifts them up the table.

Boss hails glorious year for Goodwood

THE boss of Goodwood racecourse has admitted 2018 has been one of the best in recent memory - despite an "horrendous" security incident which caused a major review of operations.

Alex Eade, general manager of Goodwood, said the glorious summer had led to a glorious season of flat racing on the South Downs.

But, it was dealing with the aftermath of negative headlines brought about by a brawl on opening Saturday which the former army major reflected back on.

Eade described it as "horrendous to be part of", adding: "I think many good things have come out of it."

He said: "Our security now is much more visible than it was and I think we sent a strong message. I think people realised how much it upset us personally and saw how much we care about our customers. Sometimes you learn your best lessons from adversity."

Despite the learning curve, there were plenty of highlights on the track for Eades and

the rest of the team.

Battash won the King George Qatar Stakes while Stradivarius made it a second win in the Qatar Goodwood Cup. But Eade said there were also highlights away from the course, too - not least the commitment of his staff and working at such an iconic venue known across the globe.

He said: "I love going to any sporting venue where you can still feel the energy, even when the place is empty.

"I think at Goodwood I feel the 200 years of excitement reverberating around the structures every day, it’s a really nice feeling.

I work somewhere that is other people’s hobby."

Eade said preparations were already underway to make improvements to the iconic course for next year - with a new big screen in the Gordon Enclosure, upgrades to the betting infrastructure and a host of smaller changes around eating and seating already planned for the winter.

THE week 8 results from the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out Darts League saw Graham Hollis (Fishermans Joy) make history.

He fired a 100 in shot and 154 out shot to wrap up a 15 dart leg. In doing so he became only the third player in history to hit two ton plus in and out shot legs in the same season. RUNNING: A handful of races for Bognor Regis Tone Zone runners this weekend.

Last Saturday, Peter Ramsdale and Jess THomson took part in the Phoenix Jaw Dropper Half Marathon, a flat race near Walton-on-THames.

THomson came across the line first for the club in 1:40, with Ramsdale running under the 2 hour mark, finishing in 1:58.

Another race held on the Saturday was the Brutal Spider Hill 10k, an extremely tough off road course with obstacles thrown in for those taking part.

Sarah Santer was the solo runner there for the club and finished in a very respectable time of 1:20.

THe following day saw two half marathons and a full marathon events visited by the blue and orange contingent.

THe Phoenix Riverside Marathon was ran by Jude Bazeley in 5:45.

THe Bedgebury Forest Half Marathon saw Zoe Hemes and Vicky Cooper from the club both finishing in 2:11.

Five club members took on the Gosport Half Marathon this year and THomson, running her second Half Marathon of the weekend, recorded a PB of 1:35.

Chi Ladies boss slams ref as three injured in Hornets loss

Goals central to City's form FREE-SCORING Chichester City are hoping their formidable front line will keep on shooting them to success.

Miles Rutherford's side are third in the SCFL Premier and have ambitions that their wait for promotion to the Bostik South will be realised this summer.

Key to their efforts will be the form in front of goal.

With 15 matches of the league campaign gone, Chi have netted 44 times - an average of nearly three goals a game - which means they are among the top ten scorers in step five football across the country.

Manager Miles Rutherford will be looking for his side to continue that form when they head to bottom side Eastbourne United tomorrow (3pm).

City have stepped up their efforts in front of goal in recent weeks, scoring 16 times in all competitions in their last four matches.

THat was helped with a 4-1 demolition of Lancing in the SCFL Premier last time out with striker Scott Jones grabbing all the headlines as he netted a hat trick.

Kaleem Haitham, who has

made a habit of scoring from the bench, added the fourth in injury-time to complete what was a comfortable win against a battling Lancers outfit.

THose goals took Jones' tally to 13 for the campaign, making him once again City's top scorer.

But, unlike in previous years, where the goals came from two or three sources, Chi are spreading the goals throughout the team.

Haitham, Sam Ndlovu, Dave Herbert and Gicu Iordache have all contributed to the cause this season.

And they will need to keep on firing if Chi are to overcome Horsham YMCA at the top of the SCFL Premier.

Even with a game in hand, Rutherford's side are five points behind YMCA, who are very much the in-form side in the division.

With more than half of the season still to play there is still time to make up the gap.

But Chi know they will need to keep on the coat tails starting tomorrow with that trip to Eastbourne United.

With the hosts yet to win in the league all season, the odds must be firmly stacked in City's favour.

CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Aaron Smith is calling on officials to give his players more protection after three of his players were injured in the 1-0 defeat to Watford.

THe reverse on the road to the Hornets was just Chi's second loss of the season in the National Southern Premier.

Despite the defeat, they remain top of the table by two points to Coventry United. But of more concern to Smith are the injuries caused to a number of his players.

He said: "We don't mind it being physical and we are happy giving people a battle. But we have to be looked after by the ref and he didn't do that.

"THey came to kick us everywhere and if that was the game plan then fair enough.

But we can't come off the field with one with concussion, two with damaged ankles and others with small knocks - that's not good enough. But the referee didn't lose us that game, we lost it as we weren't good enough."

Chi now have a fortnight off which will give players a chance to recover from their knocks.

THey will return to action on December 2 with a trip to Crawley Wasps in the SSE Women’s FA Cup Second Round.

Lions fighting on four fronts

PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds is urging his side to not get carried away as they remain fighting on four fronts.

With more than a third of the season gone, the Lions remain unbeaten in the SCFL Premier. But seven draws out of their 15 matches so far means that Pagham are sitting fourth in the league, eight points behind leaders Horsham YMCA. Pagham made sure that gap did not get any bigger last weekend when they hammered Hassocks 5-2, with Callum Overton (3) and George Gaskin (2) grabbing the goals.

Next up is a tough trip to Eastbourne Town coming tomorrow in the league (3pm) before cup games in the FA Vase, Sussex Senior Cup and RUR Cup. And while the mood at Nyetimber Lane remains very upbeat, the joint manager believes his talented side just need to focus on their immediate future.

Simmonds, who manages the side alongside Richie Hellen, said: "We remain in three cup competitions so we want to go as far as we did last year in at least two of the three.

"We still remain unbeaten in the league

and we want to maintain that for as long as possible but we will take each game at a time.

"THe longer that run goes on then it obviously will be a good thing as we will get more and more momentum. It also shows that we are a head team to beat.

"We will just keep on trying to do the right thing and, if we do that, then we should have a really good season."

In SCFL Division One, Sidlesham will be looking to halt the slump as they travel to bottom side St Francis Rangers tomorrow (3pm).

Steve Bailey's side have not won for nearly a month with the latest a 2-0 loss at home to Alfold last weekend.

Even with the poor run Sids remain in a relatively strong position on what has been a stop-start return to step six football.

Bailey's side sit in 12th in the 18 team division. THree points tomorrow would help the cause to push on up the table no end.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be seeking just their second league win of the season when they welcome Montpelier Villa to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

THe Robins have tasted victory in just one of their last ten matches and are third bottom of the division.

A spirited performance against Westfield last time out did not produce any points with Zackary Willett netting a consolation in a 2-1 defeat.

Consistency key for Selsey to progress SELSEY boss Daren Pearce is calling on his young side to carry on with the consistency as the Blues piece together their best run of results of the season.

After an up and down start, the SCFL Division One side have won five of their last seven in all competitions.

THe latest was a 2-0 victory over Oakwood sealed by Lindon Miller and Joseph Bennett.

THat run of good form has lifted Selsey up to sixth in what is a competitive division where 11 points separates fifth from sixth bottom.

Selsey have a good chance of picking up another three points when they head to midtable Storrington tomorrow (3pm).

Pearce said: "THe aim has to be to try and stay on the coat tails of the top four and then

see where it takes us.

"It may be a cliche, but we will continue to take each game as it comes.

"THe top four are clear of everyone else at the moment. But if we can keep on picking up points then hopefully we will climb up the table. THe most important thing for us is to get that consistency."

With a host of young players forming the nucleus of the side it is no wonder that consistency has been an issue - but the manager says he is delighted with the attitude shown by his group so far.

Pearce said: "THe squad is a good group. We have no Big Time Charlies, everyone works hard for each other and I think things are going well."

Rocks raring to go as monthlong wait for a victory is over Next Game

THREE BRIDGES (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR are hoping a bumper crowd will turn out and cheer them on the way to a summer date at THe Amex.

Rocks recorded their first win in over a month last weekend when they came from behind twice to defeat Wingate & Finchley 4-2 in the Bostik Premier.

Goals from the returning Dan Smith, Jimmy Muitt, Mason Walsh and Tommy Scutt sealed the win in front of an electric crowd at Nyewood Lane.

THose three points have lifted Jack Pearce's side up to fifth and back in contention with the teams who are jostling for promotion from the league.

Attention tomorrow though will be on other matters as Rocks turn their hand to the Sussex Senior Cup when Bostik South East side THree Bridges are the visitors (3pm).

And with Bognor out of all the other knockout competitions, Pearce is hoping his young side can piece together a decent run which will help build momentum into the spring.

In a bid to encourage fans to come along, ticket prices have been reduced to adults £6 and children under 18 just £2.

Win and Rocks will be just two wins away from a final at Brighton & Hove Albion's 32,000-seater stadium in May. But Bognor fans will know that beating lower league opposition has been a bit of an

Achilles heel for their side this term.

Pearce said: "THe supporters were inspirational on Saturday with the level of support we received, especially in the second half, when we turned on a bit of style and rewarded their patience with some goals and a win.

"We want to do well in this competition and we know with the fans behind us we have a much better chance."

Bognor should have close to a full squad to pick from for the match with only defenders Keaton Wood and Corey Heath unavailable.

One player who is raring to go for the match is teen midfielder Tommy Block, who has spent the last week on trial at Scottish Premier side Hibernian.

THe former Brighton youth player described his week with Neil Lennon at Easter Road as a "fantastic experience" adding it "would be dreamland" if he was offered a contract.

But, for now, Block is very much focused on the tussle with THree Bridges.

He said: "Everyone knows what Bognor mean to me.

"THe fans are different class, there is so much to learn from Jack Pearce and Robbie Blake, and we have a young squad packed with talent.

"Hopefully we can get a win to progress in the cup. We certainly take confidence into the match after the 4-2 win over Wingate."

Roof lifted on new £18k cover ROCKS fans certainly know how to raise the roof and cheer their side on to success.

And now Bognor supporters have a helping hand when creating noise as the new Seasons end cover was officially unveiled at half-time of the 4-2 win over Wingate.

THe £18,000 cover was paid for by the club's Executive Club along with a donation from the supporters club.

Already it seems like money well spent as the cheers from a hardy bunch of Rocks fans echoed off the roof to generate an intimidating noise for away clubs.

It contributed to Bognor rounding off a good comeback victory in last weekend's Bostik Premier fixture against Wingate.

THe green and white structure took two days to put up and Bognor secretary Simon Cook says the cover has met with a positive response from fans.

He said: "THe supporters seemed to take to the new cover immediately and during the second half the extra noise was heartening to hear."

Bognor assistant manager Robbie Blake noticed the impact, too, claiming it was the best atmosphere at a home match since he joined the club in the summer.

IT'S been a while coming but it was a nice feeling to get a win last week after a run of draws and defeats.

Ahead of any game that you know we need a result in there is always a bit of nerves.

But when you get players like Dan Smith coming back there is a sense of relief as we knew that we would have someone up top who would only need one chance to get a goal.

It's not that we do not have people to do that. But with Dan and Brad up front we knew that if we conceded a silly goal (which we managed to do - again!) then we have players who could convert our good play.

As it turns out, we scored three of our four goals when Dan wasn't on the pitch. But I think having him in the side did make us more relaxed as a team as we knew he could break the deadlock.

It was a bit of an edgy match to be fair as we knew that we needed a result.

Whether it was a good performance or a bad performance, that didn’t matter; the most important thing was the result.

After the match, Jack did make it clear that he was happy with the way we played and praised some individuals.

He did say well done to Mason who I thought was unbelievable in the second half. To me, he doesn't normally say anything which is how I like it as he only ever says things to me if I haven’t played that well!

If I have played badly then normally I will hear about it.

I've had a bit of different role to play in recent weeks which has meant I've been making a few adjustments.

Being the deeper of the three in midfield, it has taken me a while to get used to it.

But it is a new challenge and thankfully I am making an impact now.

I don't think there's a position that I haven’t played at the

club but of all the positions I have played in I don't mind it.

I'm not like Doug who will run the game and control matches. He is probably the best at the club and probably in the league at doing that.

But what I think I bring is the ability to put my foot in and I think it is going OK so far.

THe Wingate match also was special as the club paid tribute to Bill Spriggs.

I did not know him personally but I had seen him around the ground and said hello to him.

It was nice to see his family there and more than anything it was good to get the three points on the board as we wanted to say thanks to Bill.

THe match was also the first for the new cover over the Seasons end of the ground.

I think Blakey summed it up on social media when it said it really boosted the atmosphere.

I don't think the pictures do it justice - it looks really really good.

But importantly, it's great for the fans. We normally attack that end in the second half and as well as shelter it provides a bit of an echo and atmosphere which is really good for us on the pitch.

Next up is THree Bridges in the Senior Cup, a competition where I have fond memories.

We are just thinking about individual matches at the moment but for me Doug and Jimmy we will tell the lads about that day out in May at THe Amex - it's not a bad place to play football.

We want to go as far as we can as our form in the other cups has not been the best as we keep on being beaten by lower league opponents.

THe only thing we're thinking about is a bit of redemption, trying to get the actual result and do some justice for the club.

Hopefully the fans will see that at home tomorrow as I think as a team we need a confidence booster.
