THe 35-0 vote, with two abstentions, sent a clear message to Arun District Council to abandon its £3.5m linear park scheme to replace the Sunken Garden. One of the motions backed by the voters said the electors' meeting: 'Calls on Arun District Council to abandon the current scheme and instead allocate substantial
funding to the improvement and upgrade of the current gardens, which can be achieved for a very substantial lower sum, to include features wanted by the community gardeners group, BRTC (Bognor Regis Town Council) Town Force etc and a long overdue statue of the town's founder, Sir Richard Hotham.' Former councillor Roger Nash, who chaired the meeting, said: "THe resolution has been overwhelmingly carried. THank you all for coming this evening. Clearly, the message of what has been voted on tonight will be taken on board by the town council."
A total of 44 Bognor Regis electors and 20 from neighbouring areas signed in. THe 90-minute electors' meeting on Wednesday was called by an unprecedented ten of 16 town council members.All but one speaker condemned the proposals for the Hothamton site of the 215-space car park, the Sunken Garden and the children's play area.
