A unprecedented number of ten of the 16 town councillors of various political groups requested the meeting.

It will take place at 6pm on Wednesday at the Jeneses Arts Centre in Linden Road.

THe move has been prompted by Cllr Jan Cosgrove. He said it arose after

the town council’s latest meeting was dominated by opposition to Arun District Council’s proposals to rip out the Sunken Garden and replace it with a linear park.

THe scheme also envisages blocks of flats being built on the adjoining Hothamton car park.

Cllr Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said many people failed to accept the scheme was aimed at regenerating Bognor Regis and believed Arun intended it as a moneymaking scheme by selling its land for housing.

Tyler honoured by Queen with medal BRAIN tumour survivor Tyler Murphy has been presented with an honour from the Queen.

THe Barnham resident, 21, received his British Empire Medal at a special ceremony held at his former secondary school.

He was hailed as 'extraordinary' by the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, Susan Pyper, at the occasion.

THe award, from the Queen's birthday honours list this year, is an acknowledgement of Tyler's tireless work helping to brighten up the lives of children living with debilitating illnesses and their families in the region.

Mrs Pyper told the investiture at St Philip Howard Catholic High School: "Tyler is an extraordinary young person.

"Not only has he had his own considerable challenges to deal with.

He has turned that hardship into a force for good by helping other children and young people.

"And the British Empire Medal means so much because it is a tribute to people who have contributed to their local communities."

Mrs Pyper said Tyler's achievement was even more remarkable because of his young age.

"In my 10 years as Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, Tyler is only the second person aged under 60 who has been awarded with a British Empire Medal.

He is remarkable."

Tyler told his friends and family at the ceremony: "It has been a long few years

but I have got through it thanks to all of you. It has been a privilege for me to help other people."

His mum, Jan Ellis, said: "I couldn't be prouder of Tyler. Despite everything he's been through, he remains positive and upbeat. He never puts himself first and always thinks of other people.

"When we got the letter about his award, I couldn't read it out to him because I was crying so much. Tyler inspires me every day."

Since being diagnosed with a rare glioneuronal tumour in 2010, Tyler has undergone 27 operations to leave him with severe disabilities.

In 2016, he suffered a stroke, which affected his speech.

It was two years earlier, as he lay in his hospital bed recovering from surgery, he came up with the idea of sending out gift boxes to children in a similar situation.

THat led to Tyler's Trust - whose patron is BBC Radio 1 and TV presenter Fearne Cotton - and which has given out hundreds of the boxes.

Tyler is one of the Brain Tumour Charity's 20 Young Ambassadors across the UK to help the charity raise awareness about the disease - the biggest cancer killer of children and under-40s.

Emma Wood, the charity's young adults manager, said: "We are thrilled for Tyler he has received this incredible honour. He richly deserves it.

"He's an inspirational young man and we are so lucky to have him as one of our charity ambassadors."

Appeal for help after town's public toilets are vandalised VANDALS have damaged five public toilets around the Bognor Regis area in recent weeks.

Arun District Council has appealed for information after the conveniences were targeted.

THe damage occurred at Bedford Street, London Road, Waterloo Square and the Regis Centre toilets in Bognor Regis as well as Sandy Road in Pagham. THe council's properties and estates team quickly repaired the toilets to ensure the normal seasonal opening was restored for the public.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said:

"It's very disappointing that a number of our valued public toilets in the district have become a regular target for vandals.

"THis not only costs the taxpayer, but also inconveniences our customers as the toilets have to be closed while essential repairs are carried out.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed anything suspicious at these locations to report it.

"I would urge anyone involved in vandalism to think again about the impact of their actions."

Purple is the colour as school helps out

f Paige Smith hands out corms to some keen students MORE than 1,000 students ensured a Bognor Regis school will turn purple next year.

THe mass turnout of pupils at THe Regis School ensured its grounds will be ablaze with crocuses in the spring.

THe enthusiastic planting was carried out to support the Rotary movement's Purple4Polio campaign.

Students learned about the good cause in lessons and everyone - well over 1,000 - had the chance to plant a lasting reminder of the issue on the school site in Westloats Lane.

Its youth service chairman, Bob Pavard, said: "Rotary's motto is 'Service Above Self' and this is exemplified in Rotary's internal campaign to eradicate polio.

"Purple4Polio is about raising awareness of the campaign and the students of THe Regis School have embraced this completely.

"I've enjoyed the privilege of working with them and am grateful to them for the way that they have welcomed me so generously and have emboided the principles of Rotary so commendably."

THis is the second year that students took part in the campaign. THis saw them treated to a spectacular display of

purple crocus flowers enjoyed by staff, students and plenty of bees population.

THe Rights Respecting Ambassadors prepared the ground, supervised the planting and designed the display.

A school spokesman said: "THey are committed to promoting children's rights and, as such, saw this as a great opportunity to raise awareness of Article 24 of the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child."

Article 24 states that its signatories recognise the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard to health and to the facilities for the treatment of illness and the rehabilitation of health.

THey should also strive to ensure that no child is deprived of his or her right of access to such health care services.

“THese include a long overdue town memorial to our founder – Sir Richard Hotham – after whom the garden and car park are named,” he said.

He said the motion and the meeting were supported by the community gardeners who look after the garden on behalf of Arun.

THose councillors who backed the retention and improvement of the Sunken Garden are: Kenton Batley (LD, Orchard), Jim Brooks (I, Marine), Jan Cosgrove, Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham), Martin Lineham (UKIP, Marine), Martin Smith (LD, Hotham), Matt Stanley (LD, Marine), Bill Toovey (LD, Orchard), Jeanette Warr (LD, Hotham) and Phil Woodall (C, Orchard).

Only three signed the official notice to keep it to one sheet of paper. By law, two town councillors or six electors from the six town wards can tell the town council to stage a meeting.

THose who are yet to commit themselves are: Adam Cunard (I, Pevensey), Sandra Daniells (I, Pevensey), Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey), Damien Enticott (I, Hatherleigh) and Tony Gardiner (C, Marine North).

THe town’s mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, was not asked because his

role is impartial.

Meanwhile, Cllr Stanley has objected to Arun's plans for four information boards at the site, which also includes a children's play area.

He said: "Arun are well aware how controversial these proposals are and, as ward councillor, I am deeply disappointed they have not shown the community the courtesy of consulting with them prior to making this application, knowing how provocative this application would be."

But Arun member Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) said replacing the Sunken Garden would help to stop crime and anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

"We must stop it and, if that means changing the Sunken Garden into a bright new park safe for children to use, then I am happy to lose a few votes in May's elections. THis isn't about votes.

It's about a safe future for our children.

"THese political activists have got it wrong again. Don't they know or care that these gardens are a recorded hot spot for street drinking and drug taking?

"Don't they care about the discarded needles in the Sunken Garden and the play area? Do they not care that children have to play among bottles, cans and, yes, uncapped used needles?

"THe new park we are designing as part of our regeneration project aims to make the new gardens safe and clean for your children and my grandchildren to play in."

` Carols in the Park CAROLS in the Park returns to Bognor Regis next month.

Hotham Park Heritage Trust will be staging the 14th of the annual festive occasions on December 2.

Its members have joined with Bognor Regis Rotary Club to put on the event from 4.30pm-6.30pm.

Carols will be sung from 5pm6pm, accompanied by Chichester City Band, and a special visitor is then due to arrive.

Mulled wine or hot chocolate and mince pies will be available to add some further free fun to the dark afternoon. Carol sheets will be handed out.

` Ice rink to open ICE SKATING returns to Bognor Regis seafront next week.

THe town's Skating on the Prom attraction opens on THursday. It is bigger and better than last's year first rink. THe undercover rink on the Place St Maur will be open from 10am-9pm until January 6, except for Christmas Day. Other attractions include Santa's grotto and children's rides.

THe building in Lodsworth Road was broken into between mid-day and 3pm on October 31. A neighbour also reported an attempted break-in had been made to their shed and its windows had been damaged.

Gardens still without lights WALKERS and cyclists continue to be left in darkness in Felpham - for the fourth winter in a row.

THe two street lights in the Old Rectory Gardens open space remain out of use.

Arun District Council has still been unable to mend or replace them in spite of the long-lasting fault.

Mary Harvey, chairman of Old Rectory Gardens Society, said the ongoing situation was a disgrace and was putting the gardens' users at risk during the darker months.

"It is appalling. Little did I think four years ago when I started to request the lights should be repaired, that we would still be in the same situation now.

"It is just ridiculous. All we get from Arun District Council is that they are looking into the situation. It's just one excuse after another," she said.

"THe latest we have heard from them is that they are looking at putting in LED lights there.

"THey want Felpham Parish Council to help fund the work but there is no idea how much that might be.

"By the time Arun have decided, and the parish council have debated the matter, and then it has gone back to Arun, the winter will have finished."

Mrs Harvey has lived in the Old Rectory Gardens road, opposite the open space, for the past 14 years. She said the current problem was the worst in that period.

"It is pitch black in the gardens without the lights. People cycle through

here on their way home from work after coming along the seafront and it is dangerous.

"It is a winding, brick footpath as well.

A few of the bricks have lifted and that makes the situation worse.

"Even if you are familiar with the path, you find yourselves walking off it.

"It's also nasty for the residents who overlook the gardens. It is pitch black for them and it's unpleasant."

THe gardens link Vicarage Lane, through THe Old Rectory, and Old Rectory Gardens and are owned by Arun.

Mrs Harvey and her husband, Michael, can remember the lights being installed about 20 years ago.

She said the two lights were always inadequate to properly illuminate the path of some 100m.

But the central light had stopped working in 2014 and the entrance light only emitted a dim glow.

Repairs by Arun did see the lights shining again - but only for a week before they became faulty again.

A year ago, when the Post first reported the problem, a district council spokesman said it hoped the situation would be solved soon.

THis year, the spokesman said: "Arun District Council is currently investigating the provision of new electrical services into the gardens to supply new lighting.

"We hope to have a solution in place by the spring, budget depending."

Strong protests fail to stop Pagham housing approval TWO VOTES have enabled plans for nearly 280 homes in Pagham to go ahead.

THe 6-4 decision, with one abstention, saw the scheme for land north of Sefter Road gain a bitterly contested approval.

Arun District Council's development control committee backed the proposal by housebuilder Taylor Wimpey - but only after a fierce display of opposition from residents and councillors.

Speaker after speaker spoke about the effect the hundreds of extra cars from the housing on the 23 hectare site would have on the already busy surrounding roads.

Cllr Dawn Hall (C, Pagham) said: "Everyone agrees we do need new homes but they have to be in the right place with the right infrastructure.

"THe access on to Sefter Road is going to be a nightmare. Sefter Road is an extremely dangerous road, getting out of Hook Lane and turning left or right.

"It's quite a fast road as well, although the speed limit is 30mph.

"THe same issues are going to come up again and again. Pagham Road is the problem. Vinnetrow Road is the problem and the access to the A27."

She also spoke about the threat to the wildlife on the current farmland. Six species of rare bats were found to live there during an environmental study, she said.

It was also wrong for the committee to be told every allocated site for housing in the council's local plan must be backed.

"If we are here to approve everything in the local plan, there's really no point in having this committee.

"We are here as a committee to make sure everything goes with these developments, not just the housing. We have to make sure everything is correct.

Cllr Colin Oliver-Redgate (C, Ferring) said the council was being told to meet the government's order for more homes.

"THis application needs to be moved to a more acceptable place in the country to appease the government's requirement for more housing," he said.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said he was concerned about how sewage from the housing would be treated. He feared it would add to the current discharges into Pagham Harbour nature reserve.

"I have no confidence in Southern Water's ability to deal with this. THe infrastructure needs to be in place first," he said.

Committee chairman Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: "I appreciate the concerns members of the Pagham have.

"I would agree Pagham's infrastructure is one area that needs to be properly addressed. But the only way we can address that infrastructure is through developer contributions from developments that take place in the area."

Taylor Wimpey's Alex Anderson said: "We understand that not everyone wants a housing estate on their doorsteps.

"THe site at Sefter Road is owned by Taylor Wimpey. We want to build on this site. We do more than build houses.

"We build community facilities, whether a school or a Scout hut for Aldwick and Pagham Sea Scouts."

Anger at homes vote LEADING housing campaigner Alan Pivett spoke about Pagham residents' dismay at the approval of more homes for the area.

He said after the vote on Tuesday: "We are angry.

What else are we supposed to be? What is the point of turning up today if the councillors are going to be told that they just support something because it is in the local plan. THat is not the democratic process and it is absolutely outrageous. It shouldn't be the case of having to deliver on the housing regardless of everything else."

Mr Pivett, chairman of Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement, had earlier told councillors the extra vehicles on Pagham Road after the homes were built would add to already serious air pollution problems at pinch points such as the Royal Oak B2166/Pagham Road junction and North Mundham School shown by tests carried out by Pagam.

"All recorded figures were exceptionally close to the legal limit before all this additional development hits the roads."

Some 150 people attended the special meeting.

A series of other speakers also spoke against the housing. Cllr Lilian Richardson, Aldwick Parish Council's chairman, said she feared for conditions on its roads after the housing was built.

"Traffic management is unlikely to provide much relief from increasing traffic flows in Aldwick. Merely changing the phasing of traffic lights and widening a junction is likely to do little to improve the situation," she said.

Pagham parish councillor Caroline Spencer said : "...it is clear from Southern Water's initial comments that they cannot deal with any foul water from this site and that there is a real problem.

"Southern Water need to upgrade their system now before any further development is approved."

Michael Hampton, an Aldwick resident, queried the transport data used by the developer to justify adding more vehicles to roads in the area.

A consultant was used by Arun to assess the information and spoke at the meeting.

THe approval follows a decision last month to back 400 homes south of Summer Lane.

OUTLINE plans for 300 homes north of Hook Lane in Pagham have been put on hold again.

Councillors agreed to defer the proposal to enable an independent road safety audit to be carried out.

THe decision at Arun District Council's reconvened development control committee on Tuesday was backed by 9-2 votes.

Pagham councillor Dawn Hall was one of those who voted against.

She said residents' concerns about the safety of the roads around the site were well founded.

"Since the last meeting, we have had two more accidents that completely closed Pagham Road. Pagham was absolutely gridlocked at 7.30am one day. People were trying to get to work.

"It's a rural road and it is one of the best non-classified roads in the country. THis is a very serious issue for these developments," she said.

"We know what the impact of all these extra houses is going to do to our residents and to our roads."

THe meeting was called after the previous development control committee last month failed to agree how to deal with the proposal by Hallam Land Management.

Councillors voted against their planning officer's recommendation to approve it but became deadlocked about the way forward.

At the latest meeting, Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham) said: "I propose we defer this application to allow an independent assessment of the highway safety impact to the access of the site."

A bid by Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) for the homes' sewage disposal to be considered failed to gain support.

Build Pavilion - not a park!

TOWN councillor Steve Goodheart has called for a new Pavilion for Bognor Regis - not a park named after one.

Cllr Goodheart said he wanted to see the site proposed for a linear park instead become an entertainment hub.

THis would revive memories of the former Pavilion which stood there after the war. Arun District Council has used the memory of the popular venue as one of its three options for residents to choose as a name for its intended park.

Cllr Goodheart said: "THat fact is that we have got no large venue in Bognor Regis.

THe main reason the Rox festival came about was that we couldn't find anywhere to stage concerts.

"So, we thought we would do them on the prom and anywhere we could. For our charity ball, we have gone to Butlin's.

"Building a new Pavilion would overcome that shortage of venues and really help to regenerate the town.

"It would be a better use of £4m than spending it on a park to replace an open space.

"Arun could spend £3m on the Pavilion and then £1m on a new park in Waterloo Square and move the bowling elsewhere."

THe original Pavilion began as an aircraft hangar built for the Norman THompson Aircraft Company in Middleton. A series of cancelled orders saw the company collapse and the former Bognor Regis Urban District Council bought the structure for about £17,000 in 1919.

It was re-erected in the town centre and quickly gained a good reputation.

Various artistes, dancers and exhibitions attracted audiences and it could

accommodate 2,500 dancers.

But its glory days ended when a fire broke out on the night of July 12, 1948, in its right hand tower. THe council decided to shut the building after months of talks and pulled it down.

Part of its location is the current Hothamton car park and children's play area next to the Sunken Garden between Queensway and West Street.

Arun wants to create a linear park across the entire site with flats and car parking and a potential new health centre.

But Cllr Goodheart (I, Hotham) said the money would benefit the town more if it was spent on the new Pavilion.

A 1,300-capacity venue would be enough to attract a wide range of activities.

"We want something on the site to regenerate the town and to benefit the commuinity. It is very difficult to find a sizeable venue in this town," he said.

"A new Pavilion could be used for a multitude of different functions - not just concerts, but exhibitions, displays and markets. We need a large space which will attract a large number of people.

"Bognor Regis has lost many of its large venues over the years - the Pavilion, the Rex and the Alexandra Hall in the Regis Centre, which was given to Whitbread.

"When we had the Pavilion in the 40s, the town's population was probably 40,000. It's nearer 70,000 now and yet we don't have anything like it."

A planning precedent for a venue on the site was gained by the Sir Richard Hotham Project whose scheme, which included a large theatre, was backed by a planning inspector earlier this year.

Traffic calming in Felpham backed ROAD safety in Felpham is set to be improved by a new mini-roundabout.

THe £130,000 feature could be installed at the junction of Summerley Lane and Felpham Way next spring.

Seven objections failed to stop West Sussex county councillors backing the plan at a recent meeting. Most of the protests said the reduction in vehicles on Felpham Way since the relief road opened in 2016 reducing the need for a mini-roundabout.

Cllr Hilary Flynn (C, Felpham) said: "It might annoy seven people but the safety of majority is more important to me. THis will make things safer for everyone in the village."

She said a length of Summerley Lane lacked pavements to make it dangerous for pedestrians if motorists used it to avoid Felpham Way. Cllr David Edwards (C, Bersted) said: "We've had at least nine years talking about this. THis is something that has been definitely needed for many, many years."

THe mini-roundabout is being funded from about £1m from the developers of the housing at Site Six in the north of Felpham to improve road conditions in the area.

A series of measures was agreed by councillors in January, 2014, though delayed two years later for the relief road to open and more consultation.

Work has taken place at four locations.

County council officer Peter Bradley said the need to tackle queuing times and the safety of vehicles turning from Summerley Lane into Felpham Way was the next priority.

THe mini-roundabout will mean the controlled crossing to the east along Felpham Way will be moved some 30m eastwards to create space.

"THe proposals will address concerns from the local community about traffic queues on Summerley Lane and will give benefit to those using Summerley Lane as their main access route from residential communities," he said.

Gymnastic studio proposal for former ambulance station GYMNASTS could have a new base in Bognor Regis.

Plans have been revealed to change the use of the town's former ambulance station to a gymnastics studio. Kris Domey, of THe Academy of Gym, has sent her scheme for the 950sq m Chichester Road site to Arun District Council.

A statement by her planning agents, n.j.a. town planning, says: "Planning permission is being sought for the change of use to provide a permanent purpose-built base for a community based, 'not for profit' gymnastics club run by a passionate and dedicated team

of professional people."

TAG has an established track record, they say, during the past nine years.

Several of its gymnasts have been selected for county and regional squads.

But they add: "Without a permanent facility, the club are unable to achieve their full potential and objective of improving access to, and giving, children and adults from all backgrounds and abilities the opportunity to experience and enjoy gymnastics." THe proposal has been backed by British Gymnastics among others. It comes after a search of 20-plus buildings to replace its rented locations.

Sussex Camera Centre in the High Street will close in January.

A statement from the directors said: "After 72 years of successful trading in photography, the directors of Sussex Camera Centre are now planning to retire from this family business.

"Accordingly, Sussex Camera Centre Bognor Regis will be closing early in 2019."

MP goes back to Felpham college LABOUR MP Peter Kyle swopped the Commons for classrooms in Felpham.

Mr Kyle was a student at Felpham Community College in the 1980s.

He returned to meet its student council members, observe some lessons and see the developments taking place to extend and update its facilities.

Mr Kyle, who has been the Labour member for Hove and Portslade since 2015, said he had enjoyed his journey back in time.

"I had a mixed time at school. I loved the people and the friends but I really struggled with the work as an undiagnosed acute dyslexic.

"I left without any usable qualifications and even had to return at the age of 25 to take them again so I could go to university," he said.

"Physically, the school is recognisable to me, even though there's been a lot of

changes and additions like a new hall and some new classrooms."

He contrasted the eighties college's noisy and boisterous atmosphere with the purposeful atmosphere he found on his return.

He said meeting current students was the highlight of his visit.

"I loved listening to their views on the community I grew up in and answering the many questions they had about my life, career and about politics."

Harry Triggs, a Year 12 student, said: "Mr Kyle was an inspirational speaker.

"He was really down to earth and talked about the difficulties he faced with his progression through education, including his lack of confidence and dyslexia.

"He spoke about how important it is not to give up on what we want to achieve and to keep going and have faith in yourself."

Hospital's service ` Story of the poppy A COURT case held by Middleton church-goers examined the origin of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.

Invented and co-ordinated by Gerbera LeFort, various witnesses suggested different reasons for the adoption of the flower in the production at St Nicholas Church last Saturday, pictured above.

Its vicar, Father William Marston, said: "Interspersed with First World War poetry, song and refreshments, everyone was invited to cast a vote.

When the vote was tied, the judge, Sylvia Desterbecq, cast her vote in favour of its 'having been soldiers, rather than one individual, who had originated the poppy'.

Mr Marston said: "With great skill and inventiveness, the production encouraged us to think about the origin of the hugely important and poignant poppy, as we marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War."

MORE members of the public than ever paid their respect to the men on the Bognor Regis roll of honour.

THe 324 individuals are recorded on the immaculate structure in the town’s war memorial hospital.

THey were the centre of attention at the annual remembrance service held by the hospital’s Friends.

A total of 54 people turned up alongside an equal number of invited guests and dignitaries for the 40-minute tribute.

THe service has been held for about five years. Friends’ chairman, Brian Knight, pictured right, said he was delighted by the turnout. “THis is the best we have ever had,” he said.

THe service was led by the hospital’s chaplain, the Rev Graham Reeves. He told the congregation: “We pray for all those who still suffer as a result of war and we all commit ourselves to serve their needs and to work with all of our strength to see peace and justice

established throughout the world.”

Local historian Cliff Mewett brought a few of the names on the memorial to life.

He contrasted the sorrow felt in their households with the widely reported joy around the town – ‘Bognor Is Beaming’ stated one headline - which greeted the Armistice in 1918.

New Poppy Appeal organiser thanks town for its backing NEW Bognor Regis poppy leader John Haynes has thanked the town's residents for their support.

Mr Haynes was in charge of the distribution and collection of 120 Poppy Appeal tins around the town for this year's remembrance weekend.

He also oversaw 20 tins used by a range of helpers in the town centre.

Volunteers were busy counting the cash this week as a result of people's generosity in the build-up to last weekend.

Former soldier Mr Haynes said: "I think people have gone the extra yard this year because of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. "THere has been a very good response and people have been generous and supportive."

Mr Haynes spent every day for three weeks before Remembrance Sunday, ensuring the appeal went smoothly. He said he was grateful to the town's RAFA branch members for their help as well

as Army and Sea Cadets and Scouts. "I couldn't have done what I did without them," he said.

Mr Haynes took on the role because he wanted to raise the profile of the Royal British Legion.

"I will do it again next year. I would like to do it for five years, assuming the Legion are happy with me," he added.

Town turns out to ensure sacrifices of the past are still remembered RECORD crowds turned out to show their respects to make this year’s Remembrance Sunday in Bognor Regis memorable.

An estimated 2,000-plus people packed the roads around the town’s war memorial outside the town hall.

THey filled the junction of Belmont Street and Clarence Road about ten deep, compared to the usual three or four rows of onlookers, to pay their respects to the town’s fallen.

THe centenary of the end of the First World War prompted the large outpouring of respect and thanks for the bravery and honour shown by those residents who fought in the war and subsequent conflicts.

But the occasion was brought up to date with an unprecedented spontaneous round of applause for Invictus Games star Mike Goody.

Bognor Regis resident Mr Goody collected two golds, two silvers and a bronze in last month’s games.

His achievements came after he had his left leg amputated following serious injuries caused by an improvised explosive device while he served with the RAF Regiment in Afghanistan in 2008.

His sporting success was mentioned by Father Andrew Wadsworth, of St Wilfrid’s Church, during his sermon when he spoke about advances being made in rehabilitating injured service personnel.

Mr Wadsworth said: “Let us remember those whose lives were ended by the darkness of war. Let us remember those who suffered in silence and those whose

bodies were disfigured by injuries and pain.

“We should also remember those scarred by conflict, those who were anxious at home, those whose communities were diminished and suffered huge losses and those who acted with bravery and courage and sacrificed their lives to help others.”

THe hour-long service was preceded by a longer than usual parade from the London Road car park through the precinct to the war memorial.

Organisations of all generations took part – from the Brownies to the Royal British Legion and from St John Ambulance cadets to the Royal Naval Association.

THeir massed ranks alone packed the circle around the war memorial on a sunny and breezy morning which set their proudly borne standards rippling.

Among younger people at the service, which saw 41 wreaths laid, was the ninestrong guard of honour around the war memorial.

THose given the prestigious role included Bognor Regis Army Cadet Hugo Bull, 14. He said: “I was very proud to be chosen because I have only been here a little while.

“It is such a big occasion, 100 years after the end of the First World War. I was a little big nervous but I didn’t really notice the crowds. It’s about remembering what I had to do.

“We have to keep remembering about the wars and we have to keep holding occasions like this.”

After the service, Mr Goody said he had

been humbled by the recognition from the crowd.

“I was honoured to be here as part of this event. It was fantastic to see such a large turnout and that so many people want to remember the servicemen.

“It’s important people do remember the sacrifices they made. If they had not made them, we would not be living the same lives as we do today and not having this conversation,” he said. "By remembering, hopefully, the mistakes which lead to war will not be repeated.”

Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Stephen Reynolds said: “We are here today to honour our heroes and to remember their achievements and their tragedies and to say thank you for their sacrifices.

We stand here as one to remember them.”

Felpham's war heroes recalled FRIENDS and families enjoyed afternoon tea in Felpham surrounded by facts about its First World War heroes.

THe sell-out event by Felpham Village Conservation Society saw nearly 90 people tuck into sandwiches, cakes and cream scones, washed down by countless cups of tea, in the style of the Lyons tea houses from the last century.

Among those who took part was Ken Whitfield, 82, of Limmer Lane.

His father was in the Royal Navy in the First World War and was killed while he served in the Merchant Navy in the Second World War. Mr Whitfield said: "We have all had relatives who served in the Second World War and most of us have family members who served in the First World War. "We all want to remember and pay tribute to not only those who fought in the First World War but all the subsequent wars and, particularly, those who are still serving this country and keeping us from tyranny.

"THis has been good because it has brought the community together. THere is a good atmosphere and a lot of work has gone into it.

"It has got all the community remembering what has happened and we hope it never happens again."

Alongside the tables in the packed hall, built in memorial of the conflict's fallen, were displays about some of those from the village who died in the fighting between 1914 and 1918.

THey included Guardsman William Norton, 21, who died on December 15, 1915, during a heavy bombardment.

He was the son of Mr A. E. Norton, of Sunnyside, in Canning Road.

Stoker First Class Louis Boniface, 23, with family links to Greens Cottage close to THe George Inn, died after having both legs amputated following a U-boat torpedo attack on HMS Niger off Deal in Kent on November 11, 1914.

Conservation society chairman Joyce Pritchard said: "THis has been a really successful event. I've had another 12 people on the waiting list.

"We wanted to hold something different and it has taken the seven members of history, heritage and archive group nearly two years to carry out the research.

"It's all been worthwhile and I'm glad we have done the work.

"A total of 18 servicemen have been remembered and four sets of descendants have told us we have found out more about them than they knew.

"THey have been amazed by what we have found out. All the work has been worthwhile so we can commemorate those men."

THe cream tea at the hall in Vicarage Lane was followed by a walk on Sunday around the homes of the men after an 11am service at St Mary's Church.

A 3pm event was also held there with music, communal singing of First World War songs and refreshments.

A PERSONAL tribute for the centenary of the end of the First World War has been paid by a Bognor Regis girl.

Keira Houghton, 12, researched the service of her great-great grandfather, Cpt Charles GH Chapple, of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, known as THe Lambs, those who died and also all the animals who gave their lives in the war. A recent rally at Lavant House Stables, saw her dress her horse and wear some of Cpt Chapple's First World War uniform in tribute to them all.

Keira, pictured below, draped 'Lest We Forget' flags on her horse and attached photographs of Cpt Chapple and his places of service in the conflict as well as tribute photos to the nearly half a million British horses killed in the conflict.

She said: "I feel privileged to wear my great-great grandfather's uniform and pay tribute to him and all the people and animals that played a part in the war. It is so important we remember them as they gave so much for us - the youth of today."

Felpham Community College pupil Keira also has a folder of her research and a small display as part of an exhibition at Midhurst Museum.

Poppies bloom in the town for centenary RAFA members in Bognor Regis uniquely turned their attention to a new battle on Remembrance Sunday in the town.

THey created a plastic-free version of the traditional poppy wreath to help the fight against plastic waste in the seas.

THree members of the town's branch of the air force charity - Marion Mewitt, Sheila Willard and Ann Hewings devised the 'green' poppy tribute. It is believed to be unique among RAFA branches.

A base was made from plaited palm leaves and then intertwined with strands of ivy. Some 40 of the paper poppies, which are worn with pride each November, had the plastic parts taken out.

Mrs Hewings, RAFA branch and club treasurer, said: "THe petals and leaves were then stuck together and attached to the foliage base with cotton thread.

"We hope that, through the publicity surrounding the creation of this wreath, thought will be given to moving to the production of bio-degradable poppy wreaths for all occasions, in honour of those who died to provide us with a better world."

THe 12-inch diameter wreath was cast into the sea off the end of Bognor Regis Pier at mid-day on Sunday in memory of all the airmen and airwomen who lost their lives at sea.

A Chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham in Hampshire staged a flypast as part of the tribute.

Some 50 RAFA members attended along with 20 air cadets plus several members of the public. THe ceremony has taken place for about 15-20 years.

THe idea for the environmentallyfriendly wreath arose at last year's event.

Concern was raised about the plastic in the wreath - with its base and poppies made of the material.

"With the increasing focus on the amount of plastic in our oceans, we decided it was no longer acceptable to cast plastic in the sea," said Mrs Hewings.

"THis led to a search for a bio-degradable poppy. However, we were unable to find one."

Several discussions between RAFA members and friends followed before Mrs Willard suggested making a base from foliage and attaching paper poppies. A number of trial runs followed.

Nearly 200 pupils at Edward Bryant School created a giant poppy made from small stones. THe 3ft-wide symbol of remembrance took pride of place in the reception of its London Road premises on two half-circle tables.

THe 180 Years 3 and 4 children painted hundreds of the stones red and black.

THe poppy was surrounded by the letters and numbers which spelled; 'We Will Remember THem 1918-2018'.

One of the pupils, Kayla Wallace, seven, said: "We wanted to remember all those who were in the war for us and who died."

War windows paid tribute POPPIES adorned premises as Bognor Regis remembered its servicemen who fought in the First World War. Several organisations used window displays to pay tribute to the sacrifices made 100 years ago to defend this country.

THe poppies were purple in the PDSA shop window in London Road.

Manager Sarah Lawrence created the town's first display in the colour after the idea arose from an Australian animal charity.

Her bright collection of more than 100 of the flowers paid tribute to the animals which lost their lives in the two world wars.

"I want to people to think of the animals as well as the men and women who suffered in the wars. It is about raising awareness.

"THere were thousands of animals killed in the Second World War alone," she said.

THe PDSA was founded in the First World War, in 1917 and awards Dickin Medals to animals for courageous behaviour.

On the opposite side of London Road, the My

Sisters' House women's centre highlighted the role of women in the First World War in nursing, farming and factories.

Eight photographs of that work were mixed with at least 100 big red poppies knitted and crocheted by the centre's Crafternoon group members led by joint organisers Helen Downes and Marion Wells.

Helen said: "Women's role in the First World War is often overlooked. THere is a lot of talk about the men who died but many of those who came back were badly injured and needed longterm care."

Lotus Styling's owners, Daren and Kate Terry, said they were overwhelmed by the reaction to their emotive window display at their hair salon.

THe touching tribute, named Lone Poppy, gained reactions from customers and passersby of the Aldwick Road business alike in the runup to Remembrance Sunday.

Mr Terry said: "THe emotion from people who have seen the Lone Poppy display in our salon window has been tangible."

` Bells were muffled BELL-RINGERS at Aldwick's parish church joined in a national tribute for Remembrance Sunday.

THey ensured the eight bells at St Richard's Church joined those across the UK to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. THe bells were rung as usual before the morning service but were half-muffled.

THey finished at 10.25am after a single bell had been tolled 100 times.

Richard Jeffrey, the ringers' tower captain, said the bells were also rung at 12.30pm as part of THe National Ringing Remembers campaign. THis coincided with the people's procession when 10,000 individuals walked past the Centotaph in London.

At 7.05pm, the ringers were in action again as part of Battle's Over. More than 1,000 churches and cathedrals were due to take part after 1,000 beacons had been lit across the country.

"THe Central Council for Church Bell Ringers started a campaign in 2017 to recruit 1,400 new bell ringers to replace the 1,400 known ringers who died in the war," said Mr Jeffrey.

"THis campaign has been very successful, with some 1,700 having been recruited by August, 2018.

"THis includes four new ringers who took part in the ringing on Remembrance Sunday," he added.

Beacon blazes for town's heroes HUNDREDS of people crowded around the seafront beacon in Bognor Regis to see it burst into life.

the Place St Maur for probably the most popular event since the beacon was installed some 20 years ago.

Called Battle Over, it was one of scores of the events across the UK, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and at scores of locations overseas, such as New Zealand, Ireland and Australia.

It began in the town at 6.45pm with a lone pipe playing Battle O’er, a traditional Scottish air played after a battle, outside cathedrals in the country.

At 6.55pm, the Last Post was played and the beacon was set alight after a reading by the town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds.

He said: “Let us remember all those who selflessly gave their lives at home and abroad. THeir sacrifices enabled us to enjoy the peace and freedom we enjoy today.”

THe beacon quickly blazed away in the brisk south-westerly wind of some 20mph. So briskly, in fact, that some spectators in the flight path of the burning embers had to be moved back for their safety.

Town crier Jane Smith followed the lighting by proclaiming the specially written Cry for Peace Around the World, which urged succeeding generations to keep the soldiers’ memories alive.

Lights remember the sacrifices of the war LANTERNS kept alive the memories of more than 100 Bognor Regis servicemen who died for their country.

THe 104 lights were carried in a procession from the town’s blazing seafront beacon on Remembrance Sunday evening to St Mary Magdalene Church in Bersted Street.

Each represented one of those who had been killed fighting in the First World War. THe procession ended with their names being read out in the church by the lantern holders.

THe lantern of Sharon Horton, 53, of Yapton, was in memory of Harry Morley, the soldier brother of her grandfather.

She said: “He was shot in 1918 and it took him two days to die, which is dreadful.

“THis has been a beautiful tribute in the church to him and the men like him. It is the fact that so many people have taken part. Walking from the seafront to the church along that path is a walk you can imagine every one of those men walking at some point.”

Harry was an apprentice baker who lived at THe Hollies in Chalcraft Lane and enlisted at 16. He died aged 18.

THe procession stretched for some 200 yards as it moved along Clarence Road, Glamis Street, Church Path, into

Highfield Road and under the A29 to the church in Bersted Street to be greeted by its tolling bells.

THe pews were packed with about 200 people as the servicemen's names were read out in silence.

THe church’s vicar, the Rev Tim Crook, said: “THis has been a very moving, poignant and fitting way to end the day and to make it personal to this community. It was important to get all ages involved to read out the names.”

THe lanterns were battery-powered nightlights to avoid the risk of the flames blowing out and having to be re-lit during the procession.

THE streets of Brighton will feature folk tales of the world for the 2019 Brighton Festival Children’s Parade next May. Schools from across the region will be allocated a folk tale from a selection, chosen to reflect the diversity of artists taking part in the festival.

THe stories will be studied and explored by teachers and pupils before being presented in costume, music and carnival structures by around 5,000 school children and community groups.

ARTIST Trudy Redfern will be opening her studio to the public.

Trudy, who made a full size driftwood horse to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War, will open her studio on Saturday, November 24, and Sunday, November 25, from 10am until 4pm.

Trudy has spent the last year creating her horse made entirely from driftwood collected from south coast beaches.

By Ruth Scammell ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk MADNESS fans are being invited to take a trip down memory lane as a popular tribute band prepare to perform in Bognor.

Badness will take to the stage at Riverside Caravan Centre on Friday, November 23.

Madness, known for hits such as Our House, It Must Be Love, Baggy Trousers and One Step Beyond, continue to attract fans from across the country and it is hoped Badness will be a big hit when they perform.

Roy Rosier is the complex manager at Riverside.

He said it was the first time they had hosted an event outside of the season, such as New Year's Eve. He said: "THis is our first one so we are hoping that this will take off and then we will continue to do a lot more.

"We are looking forward to it. We do hope that it will go down well so we can run an event like it again. Madness tribute acts do always seem to be very popular. THe tickets are selling well.

"It should be a good night bringing that

two tone style of music to Bognor - it always proves very popular."

Badness formed back in 1994 and have become one of the best tribute bands in the country, winning several times at THe National Tribute Awards.

Within six months of forming, they were selling out venues across the UK and Ireland. Originally a seven piece outfit, consisting of guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, trumpet, keyboards and vocals, they soon became six, with the front man and vocalist taking over on the trumpet.

Badness have also toured further afield, in countries including Germany and Spain, as well as Israel.

Tickets for An Evening with Badness are £10 each and can be bought at Riverside's reception based in Shripney Road.

A LOCAL artist is exploring identity and immigration in a new exhibition.

Havant-based artist Agata Wojcieszkiewicz has a new, hard-hitting exhibition at THe Spring, located in the town.

She said: “Time, place and identity are important to me. I am an immigrant stuck in limbo between the past and present worlds.”

Having studied and gained traditional training in Poland before moving to England in 2011, Agata now lives and works from a studio at ‘Making Space’ in Havant.

THere, she created some of her recent works displayed in this exhibition that demonstrate her perceptive on contemporary Britain as a Polish immigrant.

Elements of Wojcieszkiewicz’s work are inspired by her time working as a cleaner at Queen Alexandra Hospital and also features Portsmouth, giving this exhibition an extremely local feel and makes the topic of immigration relevant for spectators from the borough.

Agata’s work will also be accompanied by her artist statement, giving the viewer an insight into her inspiration,

background and how she produces these creations.

Her work was last displayed at THe Spring earlier this year, when she won first place in the centre's Open Exhibition.

Sunshine Wine will have you beaming with joy Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com THERE is a buzz around Chichester at the moment and, none more so than at Chichester Assembly Room, where last Saturday saw a sell-out crowd revel in nostalgia as Wish You Were Pink Floyd presented an impressive selection of their repertoire embellished by a superb laser show in the Georgian splendour of the historic venue.

Quant au vin, it could be argued that we all have a duty to co-operate, so naturally I sought out my local Co-operative store, based in Rose Green, to ascertain which wines I could purchase at a reduced rate and duly found offers valid until November 20.

For just £5.25, I was able to procure a South Eastern Australian 2017 Signal Post Chardonnay and observed notes of fresh peaches, tropical fruit flavours and a refreshing finish. THe four per cent Viognier in this wine makes all the difference and gives it added creaminess and at this price is well worth a punt!

For just £5.50, you might recognise the label of the next wine from far flung

Gran Canaria or mainland sunny Spain - namely a Torres Vina Sol, a wine that is just 56 years young and is indeed the Sunshine Wine.

Torres has a near monopoly in Spanish resorts and this is a classic holiday wine with a light fruity style and low alcohol making it ideal for summer parties.

It is made with parellada, a light apple and citrus flavoured grape which plays a key role in the blend for Cava, and is a crisp, unoaked wine and in fact a simple

apéritif with green apples and light hints of pineapple and citrus.

My final white selection was that of a 2017 Jacobs Creek Chardonnay for the lofty outlay of £5.85 proving to have tropical fruit aromas and flavours with a hint of green apple and a creamy tinge on the finish. It is neither complex, nor intense, but is an easy drinking wine with white stone fruit and a hint of light vanilla and would pair well with sweet and sour pork, salmon or tuna .

THis week I will employ some brevity discussing the following three red wines, starting with just £5 expended to obtain a 2018 Finca Las Moras Shiraz of Argentinian provenance.

Ripe, rich spicy red fruits permeate this bargain buy and there is little not to like - one you should try this weekend! My second red selection is on offer for £5.85 in the form of THe Interlude Pinot Noir of South Eastern Australian provenance. THis is a lighter red with earthy tones, a subtle

hint of spice, floral notes and hints of black cherry, marzipan and strawberries and is one worth allowing to breathe.

THis constitutes another great buy and one that would pair well with roast lamb and pulled pork! THe third red was a 2015 Fairtrade Malbec, part of the Co Op Irresistible range, from the Famatina Valley in Argentina and priced at £7.50.

Full-bodied and dry with concentrated fruit, this would ideally pair with a juicy steak - nos vemos màs tarde!

Method

INGREDIENTS • 2 celery sticks, thickly sliced • 1 onion, chopped • 2 really big carrots, halved lengthways then very chunkily sliced • 5 bay leaves • 2 thyme sprigs, 1 whole and 1 leaves picked • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 tbsp butter • 2 tbsp plain flour • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 beef stock cubes, crumbled • 850g stewing beef (featherblade or brisket works nicely), cut into nice large chunks

1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3 and put the kettle on.

2. Put 2 thickly sliced celery sticks, 1 chopped onion, 2 chunkily sliced carrots, 5 bay leaves and 1 whole thyme sprig in a flameproof casserole dish with 1 tbsp vegetable oil and 1 tbsp butter.

3. Soften for 10 mins, then stir in 2 tbsp plain flour until it doesn’t look dusty anymore, followed by 2 tbsp tomato purée, 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and

2 crumbled beef stock cubes.

4. Gradually stir in 600ml hot water, then tip in 850g stewing beef and bring to a gentle simmer.

5. Cover and put in the oven for 2hrs 30 mins, then uncover and cook for 30mins – 1hr more until the meat is really tender and the sauce is thickened.

6. Garnish with the picked leaves of the remaining thyme sprig.

INGREDIENTS For the filling: • 75g dates • zest 2 oranges, juice of 1 • 50g coconut oil • 175g clear honey • 140g raw cacao powder (find it in health food shops or online), plus extra for dusting For the crust: • 100g coconut oil • 140g ground almonds • 175g desiccated coconut • 2½ tbsp clear honey • 1 tbsp raw cacao powder

Chocolate orange tart

Method 1. Put the dates in a bowl, cover with boiling water and leave to soak for 20 mins. Meanwhile, whizz the ingredients for the crust in a food processor until combined. Tip the mixture into a 23cm loose- bottomed fluted tart tin, using your fingers to spread it evenly across the base and push into the fluted sides. Cover with cling film and chill while you make the filling.

2. Drain the dates and put in a blender with the zest and juice of 1 orange, the coconut oil, honey and cacao. Whizz together until mostly smooth, then scrape into the chilled crust and smooth with the back of a spoon. Chill for at least 1 hr. Remove from the fridge 10 mins before serving and sprinkle with the remaining orange zest and extra cacao.

HIV diagnosis is not a death sentence THIS week I am in Washington DC speaking at a women’s entrepreneurial conference. It's my first visit here, so I am very excited.

I am planing on running to THe White House from my hotel later today before the events start this evening. It may be that is all I will have time for, but I cannot possibly be in Washington and not see THe White House!

THe night before I left, I took my children to the cinema to watch Bohemian Rhapsody, which we all thought was completely amazing. If you haven't seen it yet, I would highly recommend going to watch it. It's such a moving portrayal of the life of Freddie Mercury (original name, Farrokh Bulsara) and his genius talent with the band Queen.

What I loved about the movie was that you gained a real sense of how unique and confident he was in his own abilities and talent. He believed in himself fully which I found utterly inspiring. Being a child born in the 1970s, I could relate to so many things in the movie, such as the music, Live Aid, Top of

the Pops etc.

If you were around then, you will also remember during the 1980s, that AIDS/HIV was a very feared disease that hit the headlines almost daily. When Freddie Mercury died from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS, it shocked the nation and we lost a true legend. THe sad thing is, if he contracted the disease now, it's more than likely it could have been treated.

For the past 30 years it’s been a terrifying spectre that’s hung over the world, killing an estimated 39 million people. All that is changing now. Infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, does not mean a death sentence anymore. In fact, most HIV positive people today who have access to modern medication are expected to live a normal lifespan.

in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During these early years it was often referred to as the 'gay cancer,' which is such horrible terminology. By late 1982, however, the more accurate term Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, was coined.

I only discovered today that one of the most striking developments in research was the functional curing of HIV in the 'Berlin Patient' who was born right here, in Washington. Timothy Ray Brown was diagnosed with HIV in 1995 and immediately began taking antiretroviral medication to suppress the virus.

In 2006, he was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent two bone marrow transplants in a Berlin hospital. His stem cell donors were known to have a resistance to HIV and after his treatment, he stopped antiretroviral therapy. Since then, his condition has remained stable and shows no sign of the virus in his system.

At the start of the epidemic, HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was truly terrifying.

Between 1988–1995, 78 per cent of people infected with the virus died from causes directly attributable to AIDS. THat number is staggering and was largely responsible for the idea that an infection was a death sentence.

However, by the time we get to the period between 2005 and 2009, that

number dropped to five per cent. Today, if a person with HIV begins antiretroviral medication early, they are expected to have a normal life span. Huge progress against one of the biggest killers of people living with AIDS has been made as the myriad of treatment advances, as well as widespread knowledge of the virus and how it’s transmitted has made the phrase 'the end of AIDS' a realistic goal. THis was considered unthinkable even a decade ago.

Lifesaving medication is still far too expensive to be accessible to the vast majority of the world population. We need to do a lot more to make sure that such treatments are available to all, if we are going to see the end of this epidemic, however, we could live to see an AIDSfree generation if money and research continues this way over the next few years.

Community News & Views A COMMUNITY garden is to be created in Bognor Regis town centre.

Southern Water has pledged £10,000 to help to support the work of the Aldingbourne Trust in transforming the space into a water-efficient site for people to enjoy.

THe grant will fund a year-long project to crate the area at Bognor Regis Library for the trust's users and surrounding residents to visit.

Abigail Rowe, from the trust, said: "We are so excited and grateful for Southern Water choosing us as their regional partner.

"We are all really looking forward to being more involved with them and can't wait for the community garden at Bognor Regis Library to be open."

THe project will provide volunteers and the people the trust supports with opportunities to help with the building and upkeep of the garden.

Southern Water's community campaigns and engagement manager, Beverley THompson, said: "We are thrilled to be working with the Aldingbourne Trust to create a beautiful outside space in the local area.

"We are proud to play our part in supporting a project which will help transform lives and encourage water efficiency in the garden. THe project will provide a welcoming space, whatever the weather, and we look forward to helping the trust with their exciting plans to offer a new range of educational opportunities and experiences."

THe charity, based just north of the A27 near Fontwell, was chosen by Southern Water employees. THey will also be lending their time and skills volunteering to support it. THe trust provides care and help to people, pictured below at its country centre, with learning disabilities.

WOMEN fighting pension changes met in Bognor Regis to mark a notable day.

THe get-together by Women Against State Pension Inequality's (WASPI) Bognor and Chichester South Coast Group was held on the day when the pension age for women matched that for men for the first time - at 65.

Jill Robertson, the group's founder, said: "Although for the pensions' administrators at the Department for Work and Pensions this was significant, for many of us women it was a dubious celebration."

But she said the 18 women present at the Hothampton Arms in London Road were determined to keep up the fight to get the government to recognise how unfairly women born in the 1950s were treated.

THeir state pension age has been raised from 60 in a few years to reach 65 last Tuesday. It will rise to 66 along with the men's age by next October.

"WASPI want to ensure the government recognise the monumental error previous governments have made in increasing the state pension age for women by accelerating the timetable, after the first 1995 Pension Act schedule.

"Millions of women in the UK fall into the category of having to wait over five years for their pension, most without prior or little warning," she said.

"THe women do not expect the pension age to be reversed to 60 but to be given appropriate compensation and bridging payments to tide them over until their weekly or monthly pension is due.

"Not having a pension also means they have been denied free transport travel and annual heating allowances. THere are over 53,000 women affected in the West Sussex area."

PEOPLE around Bognor Regis who need help with universal credit are to be helped in a new service.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice is to pilot the assistance to ensure those who are struggling to claim the benefit can claim their entitlement.

THe charity has been heping people at its help-points in Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton since universal credit was fully introduced to the area last July.

But the new service will offer them the comprehensive and practical support they need to get paid on time and manage until their first payment.

THe pilot scheme - the Citizens Advice universal support service - was launched on Monday for help in person, over the phone and online.

THis is well in advance of its national start next April.

Lucia Badioli, chief officer of Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice, said: "Problems with benefits is the top issue for which people come to us for help.

"For people receiving benefits, the roll-out of universal credit has brought challenges, such as delayed payments and a complicated application process.

"Our advisors are already helping people already struggling with the system. THe new funding to support people with their universal credit claim will help even more.

Since the roll-out of the universal credit full service four months ago, Citizens Advice has helped more than 400 people in the Arun and Chichester districts with problems relating to the benefit.

A recent survey by the charity found more than a third of people Citizens Advice have helped nationally struggle to provide the evidence needed to complete their universal credit claim, its research has found. THis includes providing evidence for health conditions, housing and childcare.

TEACHERS Dan Austin and Joe McIntosh, pictured above, have thanked Rocks fans for helping them to raise £727 for charity in a sponsored run.

THe duo ran as Team Southway Primary - the partner school of Bognor Regis Town FC - when they undertook the Great South Run last month in Portsmouth.

THey completed the 10-mile course in aid of the Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association.

Dan said he was delighted by the response of those who backed them. "We ran in this event to help raise money and awareness for this fantastic local charity.

"THey do fantastic work across the south and support many children, including one super pupil who we are lucky enough to teach.

"Joe and I did a super job and we raised a sensational £727. We have been blown away by everyone's support. Joe completed the run in 1:27:05 and I completed the run in 1:28:15."

Rocks' secretary Simon Cook said the club was delighted to get behind the pair.

"Dan and Joe are a credit and we are proud of their fundraising efforts. We're so pleased to have Southway Primary as a partner school of the club," he said.

Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association provides specialist services and support to help children to reach their full potential.

Cafe culture in our town through the years Places to sit and chat have always been popular TODAY we hear people moaning about the number of coffee shops or restaurants there are blossoming in the centre of any town, or city.

THis leads you to think that in the past, it must have been very different with a lack of these facilities, but this appears not to have been the case.

It is very difficult to know where to start. I looked first at guide books, street directories, the internet and a variety of programmes, which contain a wealth of information.

THere was the Mermaid Café and Tea Lawn which was open most of the day and included in their provisions beach trays with freshly made pots of tea.

THe address was 3 Rock Gardens, basically on the site of the newer Rock Garden flats.

THere were numerous beach cafés along the seafront all promoting their beach teas, where you were given a “beach tray” with teapot, milk and sugar and the correct number of cups.

You then took this tray onto the beach where you and your family would enjoy a good hot cuppa. However, you had to deal with the teapot which usually was a poor pourer.

A major location on the promenade was the Highbury Tea Gardens over at least the 1920s and 30s.

THis was located on what is now the Regis Centre car park.

THey were even depicted on local postcards.

Another café was Leslie’s in the High street and here again they provided dancing at various events. I always smile when I read, they supply ‘good refreshments.’

In 1949 they advertised their Saturday night dances, which had a good band, good dancing and good company.

THe charge for this from 8pm to 11.45pm was single 3/- and 5/- double. A very different venue from today’s cafés.

Coffees and teas were also available from the Pavilion with their Lord Loom chairs or the Polly Anne, which was in the High Street, another venue which evoked a lot of happy memories.

One major outstanding feature of many of these premises was their opening hours - in many cases from 10am but for some it was 8am. THe feature is the 11pm closing time and promoting that they were also open on a Sunday.

What about the Marine Park Café overlooking Marine Park gardens?

THis is different from the others in that the premises are still here today. However, it is now the two-storey Waverley public house.

Macari’s family. Since they opened their first premises in 1953, on the Queen’s Coronation Day, their sites have included on the promenade, within the site of the Esplanade THeatre, and today, in London Road.

I found an advertisement in a 1936 carnival programme for Bognor’s Café De Luxe, which adjoined the Odeon cinema in London Road.

THis café, as it showed, was a snack bar, soda fountain and milk bar, with music. THere were also private dances and parties catered for and after theatre suppers. While advertised as a café, it was a popular venue with music provided on a regular basis.

In fact, a pianist who was there for 12 months was then engaged by the THeatre Royal. In this programme, F.W. Woolworth advertised their Tea Bar. A further example of restaurants was the Burlington Lounge, situated in London Road, opened in December, 1956, as a Regency-styled restaurant. A chance remark by his wife about not eating in certain venues created the idea to open their own, new premises, with coffee made on one of the new Italian machines being served all day.

However, at the end of one later advertisement, they mention that ‘So popular has been the demand for ‘Espresso’ Coffee it has been necessary to install a larger machine.

We can now give a really excellent service".

One location that has been mentioned to me many times in the past is memories of THe Polly Anne restaurant in the High Street, long gone, but was situated on today’s Morrison’s car park next to Iceland.

THis venue was originally an antiques shop and a wool shop from the 1920s until 1936 when the ground floor was converted into the

welcomed Polly Anne, with net curtains.

In Waterloo Square, we have THe Rendezvous, which has some interesting pictures and place maps showing the history of our town.

THese premises have had numerous owners over the years, including Spicy Tan, New Orleans Restaurant and in 1955 was advertised as the Corner House Restaurant with a function room suitable for 100 people.

Around this period, many restaurants promoted fish meals, but many also advertised Bognor lobsters and prawns.

Also in Waterloo Square, there was an advertisement in the 1912 guide book for THe Waterloo Restaurant again with lobster teas being a speciality.

Who can remember the Tudor Rose, which was in London Road, near William Street? On a Sunday it was filled not with families but single people who worked locally but away from families. THe waitresses wore long black skirts, white aprons and white mop caps.

We never seemed to talk to other people on adjacent tables. THis building had previously been a fish and chip shop.

When the vast variety of venues available are looked at historically, it is interesting to note the size, and multiple use made of these premises. We may not require the facilities to have a tea dance, or a resident band today, but the ability to have meeting rooms for over 100 people I am sure would be helpful to many groups of people.

I do know, however, that some of the new premises offer this facility. THis is only a small snapshot of these type of premises and I am sure you can recall many more.

THe ProCeed has been designed, developed and engineered in Europe. A product of Kia’s European design, product development and R&D teams in Frankfurt, Germany, the ProCeed will be manufactured at the brand’s Žilina production facility in Slovakia. It will be built alongside the Kia Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon, first introduced earlier this year.

Matching the daring design and engineering which renders it the sportiest iteration of the new Ceed model family, the Kia ProCeed will be available exclusively as a ‘GT-Line’ or high-performance GT model and will be covered by Kia’s quality promise, with the brand’s industry-leading 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard.

Full UK specification, pricing and on-sale date will be announced in due course.

At 4,605 mm long, the ProCeed is 5 mm longer than the Ceed Sportswagon, with a longer 885 mm front overhang. At 1,422 mm in height, its roofline sits 43 mm lower than that of the Sportswagon, while ground clearance is reduced by 5 mm, to 135 mm. Constructed on the same ‘K2’ platform as other Ceed models, the 2,650 mm wheelbase remains unchanged.

THe rear of the car is what differentiates it

fully from other models in the Ceed range.

Combined with its lower overall height, the new wide rear bumper gives the car an assertive, sporty stance, with dual-tip exhausts for GT and ‘GT-Line’ models enhancing its sense of dynamism and sportiness.

From launch, the ProCeed will be available in a choice of 10 paint finishes. THe ProCeed ‘GT-Line’ will have 17- or 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels, while ProCeed GT models are fitted with 18-inch wheels as standard.

THe ProCeed diverges from other models in the Ceed family line-up with a series of changes designed to introduce a sportier ambience to the cabin. THe grey roof-liner of the Ceed and Sportswagon is replaced with black cloth to envelope and cocoon occupants, and the door sills feature metallic scuff plates.

PostSport The only way is up! Blues visit the Surrey Hills ready to climb the table CHICHESTER RFC will be looking to end their away hoodoo as they look to build on only their second win of the season.

THe Blues produced their best performance of the campaign a fortnight ago to smash London Cornish 29-12 in front of the Oaklands Park faithful.

With Paul Colley's injury hit side now having the benefit of a week off to rest up, second bottom Chi head to third bottom Chobham tomorrow (2.30pm).

Win and Blues could fly up the National One South table, potentially leapfrogging over six sides and into mid-table safety.

But victory would require Chi to end their poor away form which has seen them lose all four of their road trips so far this season.

Blues position towards the foot of the table is a surprising one.

THis time last year they were slugging it out at the summit, trading blows with three other sides in the fight for promotion into the National League.

But fast forward 12 months and Chi are looking nervously over their shoulder with only winless Hove between them and the foot of the table.

Colley's side probably do not deserve their lowly status. Injuries have hit the Oaklands Park side hard with a number of Colts and second team regulars being thrust into action into the first XV. A number of games have gone down to the wire. THree of their seven defeats so far have been by a score or less.

But after the win against Cornish last time out, Chi will be hoping that the corner has been turned and for the rest of the season Blues will only be looking upwards.

Bognor RFC will be looking to keep up the pressure on the sides at the top of Hampshire Premier as they head to old rivals Fareham Heathens tomorrow (TBC).

THe Purple and Greens are currently fourth in the standings after winning six of their eight matches so far.

With ten points separating them and undefeated leaders Basingstoke, Bognor know that nothing less than victory is required if they want to keep their title hopes alive.

THe Hampshire Avenue side have had a fortnight off after a planned cup match against Chipstead was postponed. Fareham, meanwhile, have lost their last three matches.

DARTS: Five players fired maximums in what was a week of high scoring in the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out Darts League.

CHICHESTER Runners put in a brave showing on what was a brilliant day’s racing for the first Sussex Cross Country League event of the season.

THe rain stayed away for the four hour duration of the racing at Brighton's Stanmer Park with organisers reporting record numbers in both the senior men’s and women’s race.

For the first time ever, more than 700 runners completed the seven League races plus the two Under 11 runs.

THe stand-out performance by those in the green and white shirts of Chichester came in the under 17s where Liam Dunne took his fine track form onto the mud.

Dunne was in contention all the way round but was edged into third spot with a time of 19 minutes 56, just behind Ethan Fincham (Team Synergy - 19:47) and Atticus Mohapi Dobouny (Lewes - 19:51).

With fellow Chi runner Ned Potter finishing sixth in 20:13 and Harry Sage in 26th (22:43),

the green and whites took third place overall in the team contest too.

THere was a good strong field of 230 in the senior men’s race which was convincingly won by Lewes’ county champion, Tom Evans.

He took control of the race before half distance and completed the course in 29:59.

James Baker was first home for Chi with his time of 31:25, good enough for tenth overall and fourth in the over 40s category.

But with the next home being Charles Rodmell in 37th (34:27) any hopes of a good team finish were ended, as Chi were ranked sixth out of eight in division one.

In the women's race, Alice Wright continued her fine form with an 11th place finish, stopping the clock at 22:47.

Even with Fay Cripps (23:36 - 24th), Alice Cox-Rustbridge (23:40 - 25th) and Jane Harrop (23:46 - 27th) finishing in close succession, Chi were ranked sixth in the eight team division.

Leaders Chi face a tough test with third-place Watford next

Lions need to cut out draws PAGHAM joint-manager Tom Simmonds is urging his side to start taking their chances after they chalked up their seventh league draw of the season.

Lions sit third in the SCFL Premier and remain the only unbeaten side in the division.

But fans of the Nyetimber Lane side have been left ruing their wasteful nature in front of goal as Pagham are five points off top spot.

It could be so much better for the Lions after they dropped four points in the last week, registering draws against mid-table Peacehaven & Telscombe and then away at bottom side Eastbourne United in midweek.

THose results mean Pagham have now drawn 50 per cent of their league games this season.

With struggling Hassocks visiting Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) their boss is urging his side to find their shooting boots.

Simmonds, who manages the side alongside Richie Hellen, said: "We are going OK. We are still unbeaten in the league and one of only four teams at our level in the country who can say that.

"But there's disappointment because we've had a few too

many draws so we're not where we perhaps should be.

"THere've been games where we've missed so many chances it's been unbelievable at times.

If we'd turned those draws into wins, we probably would be clear at the top."

Pagham had one of those days last weekend when, try as they might, they could not break down a spirited Peacehaven defence.

After taking an early lead through Daryl Wollers, the visitors equalised shortly after.

THen it was pretty much one way traffic - but despite hitting the bar four times in the second half, Pagham were unable to find the winner.

Simmonds said: "When that happens you are just thinking it will never come and it is just one of those days.

"But the same has happened against Arundel, Broadbridge Heath, Crawley Down - we need to put some of these chances away but we are not.

"I would be a lot more worried if we were not creating chances. We are still just a few points off the top.

"We don't want to be relying on others though, so we do need to start taking our chances."

TABLE-TOPPING Chichester City Ladies will need to hold their nerve as they face one of their toughest tests of the season so far.

Manager Aaron Smith has been overjoyed with the return from his squad so far as they have soared to the top of the National Southern Premier division.

THat lead was extended to five points last weekend with a 4-2 victory over bottom side C&K Basildon in front of a partisan crowd at Oaklands Park.

After falling behind, Cherelle Khassal, who was making her 50th appearance for the club, scored a 17-minute hat-trick to seal the win.

Next up for Chi, who have lost just once all season, is a trip to third place Watford on Sunday (2pm).

Smith said: “THe problem is when you’re top of the league everyone wants to beat you and this is the thing that we’re finding.

“People are turning up with a bit of a different mentality because we have predominantly kept under the radar all season as we’ve just gone about quietly doing our job.

“Now that we’re top, people will start to recognise that and come into games against us differently.”

Youthful Selsey soar to sixth

SELSEY boss Daren Pearce says he is pleased with the progress of his youthful side as they continue to push on up the table.

It was a summer of change at the Bunn Leisure Stadium as the former Sidlesham manager was appointed on a clear mandate of bringing on players through the ranks.

A dozen matches in and Blues are sitting sixth in SCFL Division One following a 4-1 away win at St Francis Rangers.

With struggling Oakwood visiting tomorrow (3pm) Pearce knows that his side are in prime position to keep on pushing on up the table.

He said: "We are only 12 games in but the lads are young, they are acquitting themselves well. THey are learning all the time.

"We have had a couple of disappointments but we have done really well in learning from what has happened.

"For a lot of them it is probably their first season at this level so overall I'm pleased."

Blues soared up the table after the comfortable away win last weekend.

wrapped up what became a comfortable win.

Pearce said: "You never want to underestimate a team, especially one who has just changed a manager and brought in a number of new players.

"You never know what you will get in that situation. THe pitch wasn’t great but we passed the ball really well and came away with a 4-1 win so I'm pleased."

He added: "It just shows you what a couple of wins can do. We have picked up some good draws against top sides in the last few weeks and that has helped us build confidence.

"We played really well away at [then league leaders] AFC Varndeanians and were unlucky to lose that one. It's just a case of when you play teams around you, that's when you need to pick up the wins."

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham will have a challenging match when they welcome fourth-place Alfold to the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm).

Both sides were promoted from step six last season but find themselves at opposite ends of the table.

Sids drew 1-1 with Midhurst on Saturday before a 5-2 midweek loss to Oakwood.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham welcome Westfield to Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm), looking to win only their third league match of the season.

THe Robins lost 2-1 to Copthorne last time out despite Alex Barnes giving them the lead.

Much to mull over for Chi's Rutherford CHICHESTER CITY boss Miles Rutherford will be looking for a reaction from his side after slipping from the top of the SCFL Premier for the first time in weeks.

A 3-2 defeat away at Newhaven last weekend has seen the Oaklands Park side replaced by Horsham YMCA at the summit.

Some midweek cheer was provided when a resounding 6-0 victory over SCFL Division One side Mile Oak sent Chi into the semi finals of the Peter Bentley Cup. But with City losing two of their last four, Rutherford will be looking for a reaction when they welcome mid-table Lancing to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

A key reason for the poor showing away at Newhaven was the absence of a number of

key players.

Dave Herbert and Kieran Hartley both began three match suspensions following red cards against Windsor in the FA Vase and Connor Cody and Gicu Iordache joined Dan Hegarty, Lorenzo Dolcetti and George Way on the injury list.

Chi made the worst possible start as the hosts went ahead within 30 seconds.

THe prolific Lee Robinson added a second for the Dockers before Josh Clack pulled one back for Chi. Robinson then added a third in the second half while Kaleem Haitham bagged a consolation with minutes left.

Chi bounced back on Tuesday thanks to goals from Scott Jones, Rob Hutchings (2), Ethan Anders, Sam Ndlovu and Clack.

Pearce: Rocks will be stronger for losses as poor run rolls on Next Game

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is hoping his young squad will be stronger as a result of two disappointing defeats in a week.

THe injury-hit Rocks fell to a 2-0 away loss to Walton Casuals in the FA Trophy before Corinthian Casuals performed a smash and grab 1-0 win at Nyewood Lane in midweek.

THe latter of those results left many of the Bognor faithful bemused as Pearce's side dominated a match but just could not take their chances.

THe defeats mean that Bognor have now not won a match in 90 minutes for more than a month in a run of eight matches.

With the Rocks now seventh in the Bostik Premier, a positive result against midtable Wingate & Finchley at the Nye Camp tomorrow (3pm) would be welcome relief for everyone involved with the club.

Speaking after the match, Pearce said: "Hopefully it will make us stronger. We are very disappointed with the result but the performance, especially in the first half, was fantastic.

"If we can create that many chances every week then I will be absolutely delighted "But the result is everything and it is about putting the ball in the net. At this moment in time it doesn't seem to matter who it is, who I change, who I bring in, whoever gets in those areas, it's just not happening.

"If it was a boxing match it would have been

stopped on points but football is not like that "You could see from the celebrations what it means to them. But it was a hard blow for us to take."

Rocks' poor run has coincided with an injury crisis at the club.

Defenders Keaton Wood and Corey Heath are both long-term absentees.

One player who should be back for the Wingate match is on-loan Portsmouth striker Brad Lethbridge, who made his full debut for the Fratton Park side against Tottenham under 23s on Tuesday.

With fellow front man Jimmy Muitt also returning to fitness, Rocks will be hoping they have the fire-power to end their poor run.

Pearce said: "It is a cruel game football and it is very cruel to us at the moment. But we have a very young team and all credit to them for the effort they are giving.

"I will not complain about the players.

Some of the final decisions perhaps you want more but I was genuinely delighted with the performance. We've had quite a few of those in the last weeks and at some stage something has to give."

THe match against Wingate will also be special for the family of Bill Spriggs, a longstanding Rocks fan who died recently.

His relatives will be at the match tomorrow with a minute's silence held before the game in his honour.

Pearce picks up Pompey aces WITH the Rocks injury list showing no sign of letting up, Bognor boss Jack Pearce has turned to League One side Portsmouth to bolster his ranks.

THis week, two more Pompey youngsters signed loan terms at Nyewood Lane, giving the Rocks boss further options in the centre of midfield.

THe signings of midfielder Leon Maloney, 17, and playmaker Freddie Read, 18, from the youth side at Fratton Park were confirmed on Tuesday, just a few hours before Bognor's midweek match.; Both made impressive debuts in the Rocks' disappointing 1-0 loss to Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday evening at Nyewood Lane.

THe additions of Reed and Maloney are the latest picked up by former Pompey coach Robbie Blake who is now patrolling the sidelines with Pearce at Bognor.

THey join frontmen Dan Smith and Brad Lethbridge, as well as centre half Joe Dandy, who is currently out injured after making a promising start in the heart of defence.

All three have remained in close contact with their parent club during their loan spells, returning for key matches and training sessions when called upon.

IT has been a very disappointing couple of weeks for all us Rocks fans.

I couldn’t make the Leatherhead game due to illness and was gutted not being there.

But like most who can’t make games, I listened in on Rocks Radio to find out how the team were doing.

We went two goals behind and had to battle back and with a late belter from Bradley Lethbridge were able to come through with a draw.

I managed to see the strike after it was shared on social media. What a cracker! Pick that one out of the net!

THen we were off to Walton Casuals in the following week as Seaford couldn’t field a team in midweek for our Sussex Senior Cup match at Nyewood Lane.

We, therefore, got a bye into the next round and will take on THree Bridges next at Nyewood Lane later on this month.

I have to say the Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub was very much like Haringey Borough’s ground, with one main stand and then all other areas uncovered.

How can I describe the football? It was one of the worst first halves of football I have seen us play.

Under the thunder and lightning, Bognor were indeed very frightening at the back.

Defensively we looked very tired and we gave the ball away countless times.

Deservedly, we went in at the break 2-0 down and we were lucky the Casuals didn’t net more.

THe closest we came to scoring in the first half was Tommy Scutt’s header off the post in the opening minutes!

THe second half was an improvement on the first, but really we never got any momentum going and at times were very lacklustre.

So we were tragically out of the FA Trophy and it was a miserable trip home in the

coach in the pouring rain. It didn’t stop did it?

Back in league action this past Tuesday night, Bognor welcomed Corinthian Casuals to Nyewood Lane.

I thought we dominated the game straight from kick off and passed the ball around well.

Without Lethbridge and Dan Smith, we managed to get Leon Maloney and Freddie Read from Pompey who played well in their debuts Freddie even notched the man of the match award.

Both brought some much needed creativity to our ranks - the only problem was we just couldn't take any of the chances that came our way!

We were all over the Corinthians but in the 87th minute a mistake at the back cost us and they celebrated like they had won the World Cup. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances and like many games this season, we paid for it. I think the tannoy music ‘THings Can Only Get Better’ was only too true following the final whistle here – a very frustrating evening.

And so the winless run continues...

Wining games at any level of football is hard enough.

But it seems like every season around this time of year Rocks go on a poor run where we just cannot seem to buy a result.

Injuries and other absences have their part to play.

But I think the biggest issue we have at the moment is a lack of confidence, particularly when we go forward. We just need a bit of luck and perhaps things will start to get better.

But, we move on, and it's Wingate & Finchley at home in the league tomorrow.

THis day is for Bill Spriggs, a long-time supporter who has recently passed away.

I hope the lads show what they can do against a physical side. Come on boys! Do this for Bill!
