Protests delay homes plans PROPOSALS for hundreds of homes in Pagham have been left in limbo.

THe schemes for 580 dwellings on two sites were left undecided after a chaotic end to one of the biggest planning meetings of councillors in years.

THe meeting of Arun District Council's development control sub-committee was suspended without warning by its chairman after members refused to back one of the applications.

It was unclear yesterday when a new meeting will take place.

But campaigners against the homes - one application was approved at the start of the meeting - vowed to return.

Alan Pivett, chairman of Pagham and Aldwick Greenfield Movement, said after the meeting: "We will keep up our opposition to these three developments based on the information and facts we believe to be true.

"We thank the residents who supported us at this important meeting.

"It was shambolic and a damning indictment of the way Arun conduct their affairs."

THe scenes reflected the way in which the local plan, which paved the way for the housing sites to be put forward, was decided three months ago, he said.

"Many residents and ourselves were of the opinion that councillors were not

allowed to operate within the correct democratic process due to the veiled pressure put upon them," he said.

Pagham parish councillor Peter Atkins said outside the meeting on Wednesday: "It was a dreadful end to the meeting. It was a total loss of control by the chairman.

Residents' anger at 'close' homes A GROUP of Pagham neighbours claim new houses have ruined their homes.

Residents of Conifer Way are angry how the properties being built along its eastern boundary are looming above their roofs.

THe two blocks of three 2.5-storey three and four-bedroom houses were among those given planning permission by Arun District Council four years ago.

THey are being built by Crayfern Homes as part of a 40 dwellings development.

But existing residents claim they were unaware they would be overlooked by the estate which is being constructed.

Ron Lane, 83, has lived in Conifer Way for 18 years. His home on the Mill Farm park estate backs on to the building site.

He said: "I got quite a bit of a shock when I saw what was being developed. I was told there were going to be bungalows behind my place, not houses.

"It was beautiful living here. I used to have a lovely view but it's all been ruined now. It's a shame.

"We have to sign contracts when we move on to this estate saying we will not disturb each other but there's nothing to stop the residents of these new houses having barbecues and making a lot of noise. It's diabolical."

One of his neighbours, Arthur Guppy, 83, has also lived on Mill Farm since 2000. He said: "THese houses have ruined the whole estate. What is happening is a disgrace.

Arun are only interested in getting houses built."

THe estate and the new houses will be separated by a fence. But Jane Collins,

who chairs the Mill Farm Residents' Association, said the council and developers had ignored the character and people of Pagham.

"A 6ft fence will not hide the towering height of theses houses," she said.

"We would urge Crayfern and particularly Arun planners to visit the site to look at the proposed boundary screening and tell residents to their faces that these houses do not impact on them. Crayfern should be forced by Arun to enhance the screening to include evergreen shrubs or trees along this boundary."

An Arun spokesman said: “We have not received any complaints about this and it is our understanding that the houses are being built in accordance with the approved plans.

"Our compliance team will visit the site to check that this is the case.”

John Curry, Crayfern's construction director, said the company prided itself on being a considerate builder.

"We have notified local residents about what we are doing and how we are doing it," he said.

"I can guarantee these houses are being fully built in accordance with the planning permission and that includes the setting of them.

"I would welcome a visit from the local planning authority so they are able to see that is the case."

He said nearby residents would have been given the chance to object to the houses when the planning application was submitted.

Barking dogs lead to noise concerns about training use A PROPOSAL to enable dog training and exercising to take place on land in Barnham has been rejected.

Arun District Council planning officer Simon Davis said the use of land in Yapton Road would be too noisy for nearby residents.

He said: "It is clear from the advice of the council's technical experts on noise that the dog training/day care use has a harmful impact on nearby residents."

He acknowledged the applicant, Elaine Armstrong, of Clix and Trix Training Club, had tried to control the noise and that the business brought

in customers to the nearby shopping village site. But he said this was not enough to overcome the nuisance caused by the use of the land east of Parsonage Farm.

THe dog training is already taking place on a slightly different site. It consists of two elements - a dog garden in daylight from 8am and hired to quiet dogs in the evenings and a training paddock.

Up to 10 dogs, with an average of five, from 8am-6pm every day, with occasional evening behavioural classes attend. THe plan attracted 271 letters of support and ten objections.

THe Bognor Regis resident achieved two first places in the latest Invictus Games being held in Australia this week.

He clinched top spot in the ISC 50m backstroke in the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in a time of 33:82 seconds, ahead of Australia's Andrew Wilkinson in 35:04. THe positions were repeated in the ISC 50m freestyle, with Mike triumphing in 27:48 just ahead of Wilkinson's 27:58.

THe rivalry was reversed in the ISC 100m freestyle as Mike took the silver medal in 1:02:13 behind the 1:01:26 of Wilkinson.

Mike gained another individual medal with third place in the ISC 50m breaststroke with a finish of 39:56, just behind his fellow UK competitor Alex Dewar in 39:42. Wilkinson again took the gold. THe ISC category is for athletes with

a single amputation or who are blind or visually impaired.

Mike completed his haul of a medal in all his events on Wednesday with a silver in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay behind the Australian team.

THis is the third time the Afghanistan veteran, aged 33, has taken part in the Invictus Games.

He said before he left for Australia: "THese games are very different to previous games. THere's a lot more hidden wounds guys and girls on the team and other conditions whereas the earlier games were very much dominated by physical injuries and combat wounds.

"For me, competing in these games will hopefully get me back on the right track after have a relapse in my PTSD following surgery last year.

"Training has been hard due to

my injury, but it hasn't stopped my determination to succeed and do well."

Mike was on patrol with the RAF Regiment in Afghanistan in 2008 when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. He was trapped underneath for three hours and suffered a composite fracture of his left ankle.

More than two years of painful rehabilitation followed before Mike took the difficult decision to have his left leg amputated below the knee.

He still feels the effects of his lifechanging injuries and will undergo yet another operation next month on his return from the Invictus Games.

Mike praised the support of the RAF Benevolent Fund since his injury. He added he hoped to become a triathlete with the Paralympics GB squad after his surgery.

FOUR signs are set to be put up in Bognor Regis to promote one of its regeneration sites.

Arun District Council has commissioned surveyors to produce noticeboards for the proposed linear park. A planning application has been submitted for the signage to be installed around the intended site.

Cllr Gillian Brown, Arun's leader, said: "We have put in an application for display boards around the new linear park. THey will explain what is going there, how crime is going to be designed out and how it is going to be lit at night, so it can be used quite late.

"THis should make it considerably safer than the Sunken Garden at the moment, which is not safe at all. THe area should be much safer for families.

"A planning application for the linear park will be coming later in the year."

Cllr Mrs Brown pointed out the proposals for the site, on the current Hothamton car park and Sunken Garden, bucked the trend of public gardens and parks being neglected or shut because of council budget cuts.

"THere is a national newspaper campaign, I think it's the Daily Mail, to save parks. THey are closing down all over the country. We are building a new one," she said."

Her comments came at Monday's meeting of Aldwick Parish Council, which she attended as one of Aldwick East's district councillors.

statement by Phil Brown, of Sloane & Brown, says: "THe proposals are to advertise and promote the proposed redevelopment of the Hothamton Park (Sunken Garden) site in order to help inform members of the public and to raise awareness of the proposals.

"THe signs would be deliberately located in relatively high profile, easily visible and accessible areas. But they would not be located where they would cause obstruction, block public rights of way or result in highway safety issues.

"THe exact content of each sign is not known at this stage but would include information relating to concept designs of the proposed redevelopment of the site including visuals/images and texts together with logos of involved parties."

THe application shows two signs being located at opposite corners of the Queensway frontage, one opposite the health centre and the other facing Waterloo Square.

One will be double-sided and the others single-sided. THey will be unlit and their base will be a metre above the ground.

THe linear park is set to feature a water play plaza, colourful land moulds for play, a natural play area, a covered performance area and an amphitheatre-style tiered grass lawn.

A central market square, a cafe and 100 apartments are also envisaged.

THe linear park plans have attracted controversy. Bognor Regis Civic Society says the amount of green space will be reduced. Arun says there will be more.

` Meeting request A PLEA to change the venue of the meeting to Bognor Regis was rejected.

Aldwick parish councillor Ian Mannion called for the usual location of Littlehampton to be switched to take account of the large amount of interest in the plans around Aldwick and Pagham.

He told Arun District Council leader Cllr Gillian Brown: "Please use your influence to cancel the special development control committee on October 24 and get it moved to Bognor Regis.

"More people would be able to attend it because some can't get to Littlehampton. Travelling there is a problem for some people."

Cllr Mannion made his request at Monday's meeting of the parish council which Cllr Brown attended as a district councillor for Aldwick East.

Cllr Brown said it was too late to alter the meeting. Arun's meetings were traditionally held at the civic centre in Littlehampton, which was set up to host them.

"We have tried to get the meeting webcast so people can watch it at home," she said.

"But, unfortunately, the equipment is not working. Otherwise, we would have done that.

"THe council chamber at the civic centre can accommodate well in excess of 100 people."

Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick West), who also attended the parish council, said Bognor Regis Town Hall would be unsuitable for staging such a major meeting. "THe sound is diabolical and the layout of the room is diabolical,"he said.

THe meeting began with presentations from agencies like Highways England regarding common matters to all three outline planning applications in Pagham - Summer Lane, Sefter Road and Hook Lane. THe Summer Lane proposal was backed - in a decision which remains valid despite the meeting's suspension - and the meeting resumed after a short break.

Many people had left during the break but some of those that remained began to irritate the committee's chairman, Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston).

He twice threatened to clear the public gallery as the tension increased. Applause greeted the rejection by councillors of

the Hook Lane scheme at 6.25pm by 8-7, with one abstention. But, in spite of several suggestions of reasons to justify the decision, Cllr Bower, and the planning officers rejected them as suitable.

A deferral of the application was defeated by 8-5, with one abstention. A few minutes of stalemate followed before Cllr Bower announced at 6.40pm - more than four hours after the start - he would suspend the meeting.

He said: "Officers and members are struggling to see how we can move forward. I have no alternative but to suspend this meeting to reconvene at a later date to be set."

Councillors were mainly unhappy about the impact of the planned housing on roads and potential flooding.

Third application left over after abrupt end to council meeting TAYLOR WIMPEY'S plans for 280 homes in Rose Green failed to be debated by councillors on Wednesday.

THe housebuilder's application for land north of Sefter Road and 80 Rose Green Road was the third of the three on the agenda for Arun District Council's development control committee meeting.

THe outline scheme was recommended for approval by one of the council's planning officers, Michael Easton.

His report to the meeting stated: "THe impact of the proposed development upon existing infrastructure has been mitigated through financial contribution and the provision of services and facilities.

"Adequate mitigation measures have also been identified which will mitigate

the impact of the development upon the Pagham Harbour special protection area/Ramsar site to the south-west of the application site."

He advised committee members to impose 33 conditions on the approval to limit the effect of the housing on the 18.74 hectares on the current area and its residents.

But the proposals, which cover the principle of the development, attracted 906 letters of objection as well as protests from three parish councils.

As well as the housing, the scheme includes land for a replacement building for the Aldwick and Pagham Scouts, an ambulance community response post facility and a primary school or care home.

Narrow vote sees housing in Pagham given backing

But Paul Fone, planning agent for developer Hanbury (PM) Ltd, said more housing was desperately needed.

"THe Prime Minister has identified the country's broken housing market as one of the greatest barriers to progress today.

"Your (planning) officers have worked tirelessly with us to ensure the application is suitable, sustainable and deliverable."

THe site had been thoroughly assessed when the local plan was agreed, he said.

Hanbury has joined with the developers of two other large-scale housing sites in Pagham to provide millions of pounds towards improvements in roads, schools, health and library services among others.

THese will be secured by Arun by legal agreements, Wednesday's meeting heard.

Officials from Highways England and West Sussex County Council explained the reasoning for their chosen projects.

But many councillors were unconvinced.

Cllr Dawn Hall (C, Pagham) said: "THere is nothing whatsoever on offer to improve Pagham Road. THis is not going to help the residents of Pagham who need to get out of Pagham.THe money is all going to junctions which obviously do need improvements.

"But people who are coming to live in these developments, if they are approved, and the residents who live there will need to get to the A27."

Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C, Middleton) said: "We need the housing, I get that, but we need the infrastructure first. We need to get the timing right and I don't believe that now is the time."

Huge protest campaign CAMPAIGNERS filled the public gallery in one of the largest turnouts at an Arun District Council meeting for years.

Some 150-200 people created a hostile audience to hear councillors begin the debate the housing proposals for Pagham.

Among those who went along to Wednesday's meeting at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton were Pagham couple Harry and Celia Bethell.

THey have lived in Downland Close for 12 years after going to Pagham on holiday for 30 years.

Mr Bethell said: "We want to oppose the amount of housing being proposed for Pagham.

"It is a small village and that number of homes will just ruin it. THere will possibly be another 3,000 cars. We are not against building new homes but there are far more suitable sites.

"It is prime farmland they are talking about building on. It does not make sense."

Mrs Bethell said: "We can't get out of our road as it is now because there are so many cars coming along."

THe strength of feeling against housing is shown by the official total of 2,346 letters of objection given in Arun District Council's agenda for the meeting.

A petition of 1,220 names was also submitted.

Protests came from Pagham, Aldwick, Oving parish councils and Chichester District Council as well.

THey concerned the impact on roads of the housing, loss of farmland, the risk of flooding and the development's impact on the surrounding rural area among several other matters.

Opposition to the 980 homes on the three sites of Summer Lane, Sefter Road and Hook Lane has been led by the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (Pagam).

THe group has conducted a vigorous campaign for just over two years. THis has included public meetings, a series of information sessions and other events.

Natural England, the RSPB, and the Sussex Ornithological Trust were among others to comment about the applications.

` Aldwick request CONCERNED Aldwick councillors have asked the government to step in and decide the future of nearly 1,000 homes in Pagham.

THey agreed unanimously at their meeting on Monday to request that James Brokenshire, the secretary of state for communities and local government, should call in the housing proposals and decide them instead of Arun District Council.

Parish council chairman Cllr Lilian Richardson said: "We take this very seriously."

THe call-in request says the proposals will have a significant impact on residents of Aldwick.

It states the proposals, plus one for 2,500 dwellings in North Bersted, will damage the quality of life of people who live in Aldwick 'in terms of increased demands on infrastructure including roads, public transport, health and educational facilities and, in view of the impact on the environment in terms of potential flooding, air quality and threats to biodiversity'.

THe near 1,000 homes proposed for Pagham are among 20,000 included in Arun District Council's local plan land use blueprint from 2011-2031.

Michael Warden, of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England's Sussex branch, said: "We believe the inclusion of 20,000 homes to be built in the plan period up to 2031 is unrealistic and unachievable because the local planning authority (Arun) cannot control the rate at which the homes are being built.

"THat is controlled by the developers, who will build at the rate that will maintain their profit margins."

A MOVING display pays tribute to the men from South Bersted who gave their lives in the First World War. THere But Not THere pays tribute to the heroism of the 104 soldiers on the roll of honour in St Mary Magdalene Church.

THe major event features 30 transparent silhouettes to represent the fallen men.

An exhibition provides facts and photographs of some of them thanks to research by a team of worshippers from the church. THe display is adorned with 300 handmade poppies and 100 white crosses also made by a team of church helpers.

THe Rev Tim Crook, St Mary Magdalene's vicar, said: "THis is one of the biggest events that we have put on. We are fascinated by the results our research is providing while also being poignant and emotional."

THe congregation has also made films, recorded First World War poetry, floral displays and creating a prayer corner as well as named poppy pebbles - one for each man lost - which school groups are being invited to turn into a giant poppy on the chancel floor.

A thought-provoking art installation, called Should It Matter, by artist Marjorie Paniccia, completes the tribute.

THe organiser of the event, Sandra Louisa Bosley, pictured on the front, said: "THe reaction to THere But Not THere has

been really good.

"We have had a lot of people coming along. It's so nice to see everybody coming in, people from our congregation and people from elsewhere, to have a look and to commemorate with us.

"It's good to come and reflect on the men from the parish who lost their lives in the war. THe congregation has come together and has worked towards doing this event."

Among the early visitors have been several residents of Essex Road from which 70 men were enlisted from 60 households. Of those, 18 died in the war.

A War Office document on display shows 1,050 men in the Bognor area aged 18-30 were suitable for enlistment.

THe soldiers' marching tune, Sussex by the Sea, was composed next to the church.

She and the team of helpers had six weeks to compile the displays. Different teams researched the soldiers' histories, created the floral displays and made the poppies and crosses.

Window commemorates 100 years since First World War A SPECIAL service at Yapton's parish church saw its peace window dedicated.

Some 60 parishioners attended St Mary's Church to watch the Bishop of Horsham, the Rt Rev Mark Sowerby, lead the service.

He commented on the animals which feature in the window - the dove, which had heralded peace after the flood; and the lion and the lamb, not the best of bedfellows, living in harmony and portraying the perfection of creation.

He said history should not be erased but the scars of conflict understood and lessons learned from mistakes made.

THe peace window also features an

olive tree as a metaphor for peace.

Tim Bell, the church's press officer, said: "THe window was the idea of Angela Stewart, while churchwarden at St Mary's, and who led the fundraising for the project."

She believed the centenary of the armistice of the Great War should be marked by a recognition in this century of the wars of the 20th century and the universal desire for peace.

Last Wednesday afternoon's service also featured the church's bellringers and choir. THey premiered an anthem composed by Luke Fitzgerald, whose grandfather sings in the choir.

` Tax consultation PUBLIC views are being sought about proposed changes to the council tax reduction scheme operated by Arun District Council.

THe scheme will see the current means-tested eligibility changed to one based on bands of income.

THis will make it easier to operate and understand, especially since universal credit - with its frequent changes to payments - has started in the district.

THe consultation into the proposal began last week and lasts until 5pm on November 14. It can be found at: arun.gov.uk/ctr-consultation None of the proposals will affect pensioners. THeir scheme is set by the government.

Katy helps scoops up world acclaim ICE CREAM seller Katy Alston represented Bognor Regis in a recordbreaking line of chimes.

Katy, aka Mrs Whippy, drove one of the 85 ice cream vans which created the world's longest convoy of the vehicles.

THe founder of Pinks Vintage ice creams took part in the strictly run event with her ten-year-old adapted Ford Transit.

THe lengthy line-up of colourful vehicles covered two miles around the Cheshire town of Crewe, where ice cream vans are built, last week.

Katy said: "It was every exciting but also very tense. Schools shut down and shops shut down when we all drove past.

"People were lining the streets. Ice cream vans stretched as far as the eye could see.

THe community occasion saw at least seven organisations present at the Regis Centre for its first staging.

Among them was Age UK West Sussex.

Its social presciption co-ordinator, Lorna Grant, said: "We help people with social isolation and social needs.

"We signpost people to the agencies which can support them.

"I work with four different GPs' surgeries and there are three of us who are linked to nine surgeries around the town.

"We are very busy. THe referrals keep coming all the time.

We could also play our chimes. So, as well as the colour and vans of all shapes and size, there was all that noise as well. It was interesting to hear the different versions of chimes."

THe record setting was overseen by the van manufacturer, Whitby Morrison, and Edd China, a former presenter on the TV series, Wheeler Dealers.

Scrutineers from Guinness World Records controlled conditions. THey decreed the vans had to be no more than ten metres apart.

"THe first run had to be stopped," said Katy. "On the second run, a van broke down and we all had to drive round it and make sure we kept within ten metres of each other."

"THey can be people who are socially isolated, suffer from anxiety, depression or with mental health problems or homelessness. We started in May and I find it really rewarding. We support people for different lengths of time."

Other topics covered at the Bognor Regis Town Council-held event included awareness of scams, help with emergencies and which councils are responsible for specific services.

Sheila Hodgson, the town council's project officer, said: "We've had a few people through the door.

"We have had information here that people may not have known about and could benefit from."

Boxers ring the changes to set up home of their own in town centre BOXERS are knuckling down to create a night of fights in central Bognor Regis.

THe fighters of Ockley Amateur Boxing Club will be staging their first series of bouts in their new home.

THe occasion is set to take place in the middle of next month at the Jeneses Arts Centre in Linden Road.

Faz Chitima, the club's founder, said: "Considering where we have been around the town, this is a good, proper home.

"It's like a proper gym for us and has water and electricity. It's a little bit like we are starting again. Boxing is really popular now as well.

"We hope to stage the fights in November. We have to get the boys ready to put on a ring show.

"THe boxers in London and some other big cities are fighting three times a week but, in clubs outside that area, it can be just twice a season.

"We want to change that with the help of Barry and Jenny Jones."

Faz started Ockley ABC seven years ago after he thought the town needed another outlet for keen boxers to join.

"THere was only one boxing club here and a bit of competition is good. When they are doing well, we want to do better."

THis is the seventh year town residents Mr and Mrs Jones have owned the Linden Road building. THey bought it after it had been vacated by the united reformed church.

Mr Jones said: "We are very pleased to have the boxing club here. I hope it will

grow but it is already the biggest group which uses the church.

"We should be able to get 80 people in here to watch the fights on the night.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's quite exciting because it's the first time we have had an event like this here."

THe boxers meet in the building's middle hall - its biggest space apart from the former church, which remains in use by four churches.

Ockley has about 60 boxers, including six women, on its books. Training sessions take place on every night, except for Saturdays. Each attracts some 20 boxers. THeir ages range from eight years and 38kg upwards, though only those at 11 can box.

THey can use a full-sized ring, a series of punchbags and other training equipment during their sessions of up to two hours.

Training includes warm-up runs around the building, shadow boxing, practice sessions in the ring with one of the trainers, skipping and using the punchbags of various weights.

One of the younger boxers is Archie Dowling, eight, of Bognor Regis. He said: "It's fun and it helps me to move better. I like shadow boxing with the other boys."

Another young member is George Gibbens, 10, from Elmer. He is following in a family tradition after his grandfather and a cousin were boxers.

He said: "THis is my third time here. I enjoy it very much. I like pretty much everything about it - the trainers, the

training.

"I want to keep on coming here. It's a very good gym. I prefer boxing to football because it's a lot more fun."

A newcomer to the club is former Romanian international Cioc Bogdan Nicolas, 18, of Bognor Regis.

"THis is my first week here. I have boxed three times for Romania. I represented the country when I lived there at 52kg and 56kg. Now, I want to represent England.

"I love everything about boxing. I enjoy the hard work because it makes me better. I come here every night and I'm looking forward to boxing for the club."

Bognor Regis resident Jack Dowling, 30, has been an Ockley member for three years. He is working his way back into shape after he took the summer off.

"It's good fun. It keeps you on your toes and it's a good way of letting out a bit of stress at the end of the day.

"THere's nothing better for your fitness.

I feel better when I leave a training session," he said. "I'm bringing my boys as well and it gives us something to do together."

Coach Tony Woodley said the new premises had helped the club. "It's a much better set up and we've certainly got more members now.

"When newcomers join, I look for a bit of bounce, a bit of confidence and the way they walk to see if they will make a boxer," he said.

One of my patients has been coming to see me for 10 years as I’ve been able to preserve their joint without yet having to pursue surgery as an option.

For those that do require an operation, it’s important to understand that having a replacement joint is not the end of their mobility, but rather it’s the beginning of their restoration back to health.

Many of the patients I see have always enjoyed active lifestyles and are keen to get back to doing what they love as soon as possible. People are more physical that previous generations and it’s our job as consultants to keep facilitating this.

We use tried and tested implants to ensure our replacements stand the test of time. We’re confident that our patients can expect to see their new hip last for more than 20 years and material science is improving all the time.

Recognising that people come in all different shapes and sizes is also very important. One shape of hip implant will not fit all, so looking at a patient’s anatomy, bones and what they’re hoping to achieve from the operation are all factors we consider when selecting a new joint. In some cases, custom made prosthesis can be produced.

Hip replacements tend to be performed in older adults, but ages can vary greatly. The youngest patient we’ve seen was a 17 year old who required surgery due to childhood hip problems and the oldest to date was 101.

In terms of recovery, the positive news is that with desire, motivation and a tailored physiotherapy programme, most people will return to their normal activities within just a few months. I get great job satisfaction from seeing patients get their lives back, whether this be returning to top level sport or just walking their dog again.

` Coins stolen WITNESSES are being sought after a collection of Second World War coins were stolen from a Bognor Regis house.

THe coins were taken from the property in Hillsboro Road overnight on September 26 and 27.

THe victim, a man in his 60s, was asleep in the house at the time.

He also reported a set of Lady Diana coins in a mahogany box had been stolen, as well as his wallet and bank cards.

Investigating officer Simon French said: "THis crime has occurred in the middle of the night and has left the victim, understandably, shaken by the intrusion into his home.

"THe coins are extremely identifiable with only a limited number being made.

"We are appealing for the public to keep an eye out on buy and sell websites and pages on Facebook for these coins and to get in contact with us immediately if they spot them. We would also like to hear from anyone who may have CCTV footage of this area who may have captured any suspicious behaviour."

Trust told of park challenges PARKS faced their greatest danger in decades, the retiring leader of a Bognor Regis voluntary group has warned.

Rosemary Warren used her last report as the Hotham Park Heritage Trust's chairman to say the work of such groups was more important than ever in the face of council cutbacks.

Local authorities were increasingly having to prioritise services which they legally had to provide above those which they supplied because they wanted to.

“Park budgets are being cut – and cut again,” Mrs Warren told the trust’s latest annual meeting.

“Now, parks are facing their greatest danger in a generation. Maintenance budgets are being halved or worse and input from voluntary groups such as ours is becoming more and more important.

“THere are big challenges ahead for us all if we are to ensure that the trust continues to work to protect the park for future generations.”

She said two areas of the park needed immediate action – the conservation area and the discovery garden.

Both were off the beaten track and had attracted vandalism. THe conservation area’s tables and benches required attention. It had also been used as a makeshift camp area.

“THey were recently given notice to vacate and decided to set fire to the area, which had become overgrown," said Mrs Warren.

Arun District Council, which owns the park, had levelled the damaged area but action was required to restore the land.

Mrs Warren was one of the trust’s founders in 1998 and had been chairman for the past seven years.

She praised the good working relationship with Arun’s parks team.

Her successor as chairman was chosen as Anne Cranham. She has been a member of the trust for ten years.

A Pagham resident, she said: “Following Rosemary after all these years is never going to be easy for anyone. But I will do my best. I know we have got a strong committee to carry on with all the things we have in the pipeline. I hope we can keep our focus on protecting the park.”

She added after the meeting: “I love the park and we need people to come and appreciate it but also to be involved in keeping it as such a lovely open space.

“I want to make sure we involve other community groups as well.”

She said the trust’s main public events – starting with carols in the park in December – and the popular country fair next August would continue.

An Arun spokesman said: “Arun became aware that there was a large camp in the conservation area.

"We served notice to vacate the land on October 9 and early on the morning of October 10 the camp was set on fire.

"THe fire brigade attended the scene and the council and its contractor, Biffa, acted swiftly to undertake the necessary clearance works. THe council will review its management of the area, aiming to strike a balance between conservation while at the same time discouraging encampments."

Mike's artwork goes on show COLOUR, sound and laughter will fill a Chichester gallery usually known for its gentility.

Mike Jupp - A Life In Pieces will be the one and only exhibition devoted to the art and designs of the award-winning cartoonist, illustrator and writer from Bognor Regis.

He is mostly associated with his incredibly detailed jigsaw puzzles, especially the I Love... collection, pictured inset, which is an international best-selling series for Gibson Games.

His exhibition will open at the gallery in East Street next Tuesday and last until November 4.

Mike said: "I've never had an exhibition. I just wanted a chance to let folks know that I didn't spend all my life in a pub.

"My stuff is for real people. It doesn't need to be explained. You can tell which way up it's supposed to be, and it doesn't need analysing by 'experts'.

"With my serious head on, I'd like to think that I'd be eligible to join the ranks of the great British cartoon illustrators such as Giles, THelwell, Lawson Wood and Donald McGill."

A graduate of the West Sussex College of Art in Worthing, and its first student of animation, Mike's initial career was in advertising, publishing, film and TV. He lived and worked in California as an animation art director and scriptwriter on a variety of European and American cartoon series.

After his return to Bognor Regis, he was helped by legendary film director George Lucas, to have his children's story, THe Dreamstone, made into an ambitious TV cartoon series.

It was broadcast by ITV for 52 halfhour episodes over four series in the 1990s. It was followed on ITV by another of his creations, Bimble's Bucket, for 26 half-hour shows.

A chance to see THe Dreamstone, as well as art from his TV and publishing career and original paintings of his jigsaw puzzles, will all be on show in the exhibition. His work for a recent bid to recreate THe Wombles will be on show.

THe exhibition will be followed by an auction of the original puzzle artwork on November 8 at Henry Adams auction house in Chichester.

` Probus club PROVIDING fellowship was seen as the core aim of Chichester Probus Club at its latest meeting.

THis was agreed by its meetings after a wide-ranging and useful discussion chaired by president David Childs Hopkins.

Giving support to members with illness and those who had suffered bereavement were also viewed as important roles among the club's 60 members.

Press officer Des Evans said: "THe club went on to discuss practical matters, including the need to spread the administrative load among members, and to encourage new members to 'shadow' those with demanding duties.

"It was also felt important to undertake succession planning, say for the president's and secretary's roles, so as to ensure a smooth continuity."

THe club's next meeting will take place on November 8 at the Park Hotel in Chichester. Prospective members should contact Barry Brooks on 01243 262444.

A LANDMARK seafront hotel in Bognor Regis has been sold.

THe Royal Hotel, on THe Esplanade, was bought last week. It was up for sale for well over a year.

THe building has planning permission to be fully converted into 18 luxury flats.

THe Royal Hotel was built in 1888 and is a three-storey building with cast iron balconies and rails at the bottom of its window cills.

Tim Peake sends a message to reunion

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk ASTRONAUT and former Chichester High School for Boys pupil, Tim Peake, sent a special message to former students on Saturday.

Major Tim Peake sent over the video for the CHSB 90 event - celebrating the foundation in 1928 of Chichester High School for Boys.

In his message, Tim said: "I'd like to welcome you to today's celebrations of 90 years since the foundation of Chichester High School for Boys in 1928.

"I have so many great memories of my time as a student. I loved studying science but perhaps the strongest influence on my future career was being a member of the school's combined cadet force.

"THe skills we learn outside the classroom are just as important as the knowledge we gain inside. I am extremely grateful to the school for giving me the opportunity to succeed in my chosen career. " Around 162 old Cicestrians (former students and staff ) and their partners had booked to attend the event, coming from all over the world - New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada, America and across Europe.

In the morning, after coffee and a chance to meet old friends and view

the extensive display of memorabilia going back to the very start of the school, guests enjoyed the video welcome from Tim Peake and then listened to a detailed presentation about the school's early years written by Bill Allen and presented by actor and author David Wood.

Visitors could hear amusing and interesting tales and look at photographs of some of their favourite and not-so favourite teachers from the past.

A lively presentation was led by former deputy head John Child, history teacher Dave Smith and colleagues of the period from the school becoming a comprehensive in 1971 up until its merger with the girls school in 2016.

THey covered not only academic achievements but also the huge range of extra curricular activities including highly successful sporting teams, field trips, drama, youth activities and the award-winning Combined Cadet Force - the latter sparking off interest in the army for astronaut Tim Peake and in the RAF for Red Arrows pilot Mike Child.

Sadly, the former CHSB Kingsham wing buildings have now been boarded up and are part of the district council’s Southern Gateway plans for redevelopment but many memories of the school site were shared.

Finally, Yasmin Maskatiya, executive head of the present Chichester High School, spoke about the school as it is now and their vision for the future.

After lunch, delegates enjoyed a visit to the Chichester Gymnastics Academy, based in the Tim Peake Building, then a visit to the Combined Cadet Force headquarters where members showed off equipment and weapons they use and train with before finally moving on to the West Sussex Planetarium where senior lecturer Dr John Mason, another former pupil, gave a fascinating presentation about Tim and the International Space Station.

Abseilers hit funding heights CHILDREN with life-shortening conditions have been helped by hundreds of abseilers at Arundel Castle.

THe exclusive event saw £120,000 raised by 400 people for Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

THat amount will pay for more than 17 days of care at the hospice and is a fitting way to help to celebrate its 15th birthday. THose who signed up for the 180ft abseil wanted to overcome a fear of heights, raise money for a worthwhile cause, overcome a fear of heights or enjoy the wonder of abseiling from one of West Sussex's most popular landmarks.

Jo Goddard, fundraising manager at the hospice, said: "THere were emotional moments over the two days as we watched people overcome fears, abseil in memory of a loved one, or simply enjoy the moment of doing

something special to raise money for us in our 15th year.

Each participant was asked to raise £285 the amount needed by the hospice every hour.

THe highest fundraiser brought in more than £5,000, Among those who took part was Sean Carter.

He overcame his fear of heights to thank Chestnut Tree House for caring for his son. He said: "THe hospice is an amazing place.

"My son spends time there and I wanted to do something for him and for them."

Others who took part included Sussex Police's Chief Constable, Giles York, and Caroline Nicholls, the High Sheriff of West Sussex.

THe abseil was last held by the hospice 11 years ago. Chestnut Tree Hospice opened on November 11, 2003, and provides care and support to about 300 children.

` Online safety help FREE courses are being held in Bognor Regis and Chichester to help keep children and vulnerable adults safe online.

West Sussex County Council and its partners are staging the Stay Safe sessons before Christmas to give different groups the tools they need to protect those who mean the most to them.

Separate sessions will be held for parents and carers; people over the age of 50; youth and community groups; and professionals working with children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Parents and carers in the Post area should head to Newtown Social Club, in Greencourt Drive, Bognor Regis, from 6pm-8pm on November 8.

THe area's session for people over 50 will be held from 10am-mid-day on November 23 at Chichester's Edes House in West Street.

Informal training sessions about the the risk of cybercrime, child sexual exploitation and radicalisation will take place from 2pm-4pm on November 23 at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton and from 10am-mid-day on December 11 at Chichester District Council's offices. Launch of club against bullying A TWO day drop-in centre was run by a Bognor Regis-based youth organisation this week.

Sussex Against Bullying (SAB) held the event at the Bersted Green Learning Centre in Hazel Road from Monday. THe half-term week session ended with a visit to a bowling alley on Wednesday.

Further sessions have also taken place during the rest of this week as part of the organisation's work to provide a youth club and holiday project for young people aged between 11-18 who have been affected by bullying.

THe event included activities sessions, a halloween party and selfdefence training.

Benjamin Checkley, founder and

chairman of Sussex Against Bullying, said he would like to thank its trustees for their work to bring the project to fruition.

SAB was started in summer 2017

by Mr Checkley, who has a number of years of experience working with young people who have been bullied.

He has been a peer mentor for BeatBullying and its sister group, MindFull. Before that, he volunteered for St John Ambulance as a cadet.

SAB received a grant last February from the Big Lottery Fund to enable a twice weekly youth project and holiday club to be started.

Young people are referred to SAB by their parents, teachers or another professional. THis can be done on its website: sussexab.org.uk

FIREFIGHTERS from the Bognor Regis area have been among those honoured for their hard work and commitment.

A ceremony at Arundel Castle saw them presented with the long service and good conduct medal by Vice Lord-Lieutenant Harry Goring.

Darren Greene, of Bognor Reigs, received the 20-year medal. He began at Bosham and split his cover with Bognor Regis after 18 months before he moved there exclusively.

He has also worked as an aviation firefighter and crew manager at

Shoreham Airport.

Pagham resident James Mackay also received the 20-year medal. He spent time at various fire stations before becaming a lead instructor in training development and assurance three years ago.

Medals are awarded nationally, on behalf of the Queen, to full-time and oncall firefighters completing two decades of outstanding service.

Chief fire officer Gavin Watts said: "Recognising colleagues for the work that they do is one of the best bits of my job.

THis is always a wonderful evening and getting the chance to celebrate success with families and loved ones is a healthy reminder of all that is good about West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service."

THe ceremony also included awards for teamwork, lifetime achievement and volunteer of the year.

West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, Cllr Debbie Kennard, said: "Our firefighters work extremely hard to provide an essential emergency service around the clock."

Keeping his promise, the Devil refuses to let Jack into hell and throws a live coal straight from the fires of hell at him. It was a cold night, so Jack places the coal in a hollowed out turnip to stop it from going out, since which time Jack and his lantern have been roaming looking for a place to rest.

Halloween Special

Ghoulish Halloween Cupcakes M ETHOD 1. Heat oven to 160°C/140°C fan/gas 3. Line a 12hole cupcake tin with paper cases. Gently melt the butter, chocolate, sugar and 100ml hot water together in a large saucepan, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool a little.

2. Stir the egg and vanilla into the chocolate mixture. Put the flour in a large mixing bowl, then add the chocolate mixture and stir until smooth.

Divide the mixture evenly between the paper cases; they should be about three-quarters full. Bake on a low shelf in the oven for 20-22 mins. Press on the cupcakes to check if they’re cooked; the tops should spring back.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

3. Use the image above as a guide to decorating the cupcakes. Packet fondant can often be quite sticky; if yours is, pat walnutsized lumps of fondant over the surface of each cake, rather than trying to roll it all out. Knead yellow and red fondant together to make orange icing.

Make extra decorations, like hair and mouths, out of fondant and stick them on using a little water.

Use the icing pens to draw lines in the fondant.

Add icing eyes wherever you like.

M ETHOD

INGREDIENTS • 320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry • 50g grated parmesan or vegetarian alternative • flour, for dusting • 1 egg, beaten • poppy seeds, nigella seeds, sesame seeds or celery seeds, to decorate • black or green peppercorns

1. Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/ gas 7.

Unroll the pastry and top with a couple of handfuls of parmesan, then fold in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out to a thickness of 2mm.

Cut into 1cm strips, then twist each strip several times to form a snake.

2. Lay out the snakes on a baking sheet, then brush each one with egg and sprinkle with more cheese. To decorate, scatter over the seeds.

Flatten one end of each snake and press in two peppercorns for eyes.

Bake for 12-14 mins, or until golden. Leave to cool.

Will keep for two days in an airtight container.

Two grams of spirulina a day keeps the doctor away I HAVE written about spirulina many times, but honestly it’s a favourite super food that I think should be in every cupboard!

Spirulina is actually super serious as a health supplement, but what exactly is it?

It is a type of bacteria called cyanobacterium, which is often referred to as blue-green algae and it can benefit your body and health in an almost mind-boggling number of ways. If the idea of putting algae into your body grosses you out, well, I would say turn away now, but you really shouldn't.

Spirulina is a bonafide super food with a list of benefits and nutrients so long, it seems too good to be true. THis super powered kind of algae is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients and has been used as a food supplement for over 20 years here in the UK. Spirulina is incredibly nutrient-dense and might actually be the most nutritious food on the planet. In 1974, spirulina was actually named the 'best food for the future' at the united world food conference.

It's touted as an incredible source of protein—it's between 55 and 75 per cent

protein and serves as a fantastic source of that basic dietary need for vegans and people without access to other forms of protein.

Spirulina can be a great addition to a vegan diet considering the iron and B12 that may be naturally low in these diets. THis dietfriendly algae contains high levels of many nutrients including calcium, potassium, B Vitamins and iron. Not only does it have high amounts of many micro nutrients, but it also contains amino acids, which are important components of proteins necessary for growth and repair in our bodies.

A single teaspoon of spirulina contains four grams of protein, as well as 11 per cent of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin B1 (thiamin), 15 per cent of the RDA of vitamin B2 (riboflavin), four per cent of the RDA of vitamin B3 (niacin), 21 per cent of the RDA of copper, and 11 per cent of the RDA of iron.

In addition to all of that, spirulina also contains significant amounts of magnesium, potassium, and manganese. Magnesium plays a pivotal role in helping to regulate muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and

blood pressure in the body, as well as making protein, bone, and DNA. Potassium, which is a type of electrolyte, aids in nerve function and muscle contraction and it regulates your heartbeat. And, finally, manganese helps your body develop and function properly throughout your life.

In addition to being ridiculously nutrientrich, spirulina is also a powerful antiinflammatory and antioxidant. You've probably heard the term 'antioxidant' thrown around a lot, but you might not know why antioxidants are so important. Basically, they combat oxidative stress, which has the potential to harm our cells and even our DNA. Spirulina's antioxidant properties are thanks to a substance called phycocyanin, which is also responsible for giving spirulina its vibrant blue-green colour.

Spirulina has also been shown to lower "bad" cholesterol and, in some cases, even raise "good" cholesterol and may also be helpful for people with diabetes. One small study discovered patients with type 2 diabetes found that two grams of spirulina daily helped reduce blood sugar levels considerably.

THis impressive algae also appears to have

anti-cancer effects and has been shown to reduce cancer occurrence and the size of tumour cells, as well as being linked to reducing precancerous lesions in the mouth.

Spirulina's benefits can also extend to allergy sufferers. Two grams of spirulina a day can help reduce common rhinitis symptoms, like nasal congestion and sneezing. It has also been used as a treatment for elderly patients suffering from anemia and may help increase muscle strength, among younger people and athletes.

One of spirulina's most impressive and wide-reaching benefits, however, is as a nutrition supplement for malnourished people, particularly children and patients with HIV and AIDS. In a pilot study on the use of spirulina to treat malnourished children in central Africa, a dose of just ten grams per day seemed to significantly and quickly improve the nutritional status of undernourished children. Spirulina is officially recommended as a treatment for malnutrition by the world health organisation.

Eh bien, removing the first five letters of his surname reveals the name of the 730671436wine outlet I have chosen for this week’s nyltd.comcolumn.

Aldi never ceases to amaze me, notably kelly.co.ukin terms of its range and competitive pricing. Incredibly, my first wine requires just a minuscule outlay of just £3.19 for a wine that appears to be French in origin, given its name.

THe Baron Saint Jean red wine is , in fact, a Tempranillo of Spanish provenance and is a mellow, light and low alcohol wine (just 11.5 per cent) and one which should not offend anyone’s palate - a good party wine for when your guests are well oiled. Great value, however, and I next made the 90p jump in price to acquire a Chilean Merlot in the form of a

2017 Andara Merlot.

THese days, a Chilean Merlot is a fairly safe bet and this one is no exception being a dry Merlot with red fruits to the fore and a hint of chocolate to boot. Soft and fruity, there is not much not to like.

My first white wine, on sale for £4.19, was a wine to challenge my prejudice in the form of a 2017 Castellore Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie. THe only Pinot I normally touch is Pinot Noir, but, in all fairness, this low alcohol Pinot Grigio proved to be a soft, fresh, crisp light Summer wine with pear and white stone fruit on the palate and minerality on the finish and one I can commend to you. Another red wine, the Vignobles Roussellet Malbec Syrah blend from France, on sale for £4.69, had blackberry, blueberry and damson fruit flavours and is a wine which could well divide opinion - this blend does not float my boat, but is not poor in quality.

My next three wines all retail for £4.99, beginning wth a Marlborough Makaraka Sauvignon Blanc, which was decidedly refreshing, perking up the taste buds with an abundance of fruit, lemon zest and subtle flavours of mango and pineapple and a good buy at this price.

Another white, the 2017 Soave Superiore Classico, is grown on steeper slopes on volcanic soils and proved to be crisp with a pronounced, delightful floral character thus proving fragrant culminating in a creamy finish and one

I can wholeheartedly recommend.

THe final wine for just under five readies was the Californian Rockstone Ranches Malbec and this full-flavoured red turned out to be bold, jammy, fruity with plums and blackberries on the nose with hints of vanilla and tobacco and strong liquorice notes.

THis wine would benefit from aerating, if not decanting and is mucho bang for your buck and a good pair to a barbecue or a lasagne dish.

For an extra £1 expended, the 2017 Freeman’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc displayed complexity, copious layers of flavour and gooseberry, lime and passion fruit to the fore and a well - crafted wine meritorious of your consideration. A Mâcon - Villages for £6.99 is good value, although I prefer my Mâcons to be a tad creamier.

My penultimate selection was that of a 2015 Château Peymouton Saint Émilion Grand Cru. Priced at £10.99, this wine has undoubted finesse, is fruit forward with earthy notes and oozes smooth berry fruits and juicy blackcurrant with leather, tobacco and firm tannins.

THis wine is affordable Saint-Émilion which could be decanted and is one to lay down for at least two years for optimum enjoyment, but also drinkable now.

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 onions, finely chopped • 1kg pumpkin or squash (try kabocha), peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks • 700ml vegetable stock or chicken stock • 150ml double cream For the croutons • 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread, crusts removed • handful pumpkin seeds

1. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently cook 2 finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured.

2. Add 1kg pumpkin or squash, cut into chunks, to the pan, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden.

3. Pour 700ml vegetable or chicken stock into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft.

4. Pour 150ml double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extravelvety consistency you can pour the soup

through a fine sieve. THe soup can now be frozen for up to 2 months.

To make the croutons: cut 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread into small squares.

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the bread until it starts to become crisp.

Add a handful of pumpkin seeds to the pan, then cook for a few mins more until they are toasted. THese can be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container.

Reheat the soup if needed, taste for seasoning, then serve scattered with croutons and seeds and drizzled with more olive oil, if you want.

• 1 small pumpkin or butternut squash – after peeling and scraping out the seeds, you need about 400g/14oz • 1 tbsp olive oil, plus a drizzle for the pumpkin • 2 garlic cloves • 8 spring onions • 25g butter • 200g risotto rice • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1l hot vegetable stock, plus extra splash if needed • 50g grated parmesan (or vegetarian alternative) • small handful coriander, roughly chopped

1. Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/ gas 4. Chop up the pumpkin or squash into 1.5cm cubes (kids – ask for help if it’s slippery).

Put it on a baking tray, drizzle over some oil, then roast for 30 mins.

2. While the pumpkin is roasting, you can make the risotto. Put the garlic in a sandwich bag, then bash lightly with a rolling pin until it’s crushed.

3. Cut up the spring onions with your scissors.

4. Heat 1 tbsp oil with the butter in your pan over a medium heat – not too hot. Add the spring onions and garlic. Once the onions are soft but not getting brown, add the

rice and cumin. Stir well to coat in the buttery mix for about 1 min.

5. Now add half a cup of the stock, and stir every now and then until it has all disappeared into the rice. Carry on adding and stirring in a large splash of stock at a time, until you have used up all the stock – this will take about 20 mins.

6. Check the rice is cooked.

If it isn’t, add a splash more stock, and carry on cooking for a bit. Once the rice is soft enough to eat, gently stir in the grated cheese, chopped coriander and roasted pumpkin.

Community News & Views AN AMBITIOUS fitness fan has taken on ten triathlons.

Ailsa Artingstall, pictured below, decided to set herself annual challenges and this year she took on a triathlon.

She got a personal trainer through Core Results in Chichester and started on her triathlon journey.

"THis year, to be a bit different, I decided to pick something that seemed totally ridiculous. I decided to sign up for a triathlon.

Bear in mind that at this point, I was totally unfit. I didn’t do early mornings.

"I had a 20-year-old bike with a basket on the front. I didn’t walk anywhere, let alone run, and detested swimming. What could be more of a challenge?

"At my first meeting with Core Results co-owner Greg, I was soon put at ease by his friendly chatter and the team’s nonjudgmental approach. I left the meeting with a can-do attitude and confident that there was a team of people there that were going to help me. " THe first triathlon was the Winchester May Day Triathlon.

"While my time spent in the gym did give me confidence, I was also worried about turning up and being amongst super fit people, feeling like a fish out of water. But to my relief, it was a bit like going to Core Results - everyone I met on the day was friendly, and the event was full of people of every age, shape and size you can imagine.

"My knees held out and I completed it and, to my utter amazement, I really enjoyed it. I decided one triathlon wasn’t enough. Instead, I’ll complete ten – and entered nine more over the next four months.

"Recently, I completed my 10th triathlon, still doing breaststroke, but cycling a bit faster and plodding along happily for the 5k run. I would never in a million years have thought I could complete one triathlon, let alone ten."

SUSSEX could be in for a share of a £22m government fund aimed at steering young people away from serious crime.

Katy Bourne, the Sussex police and crime commissioner, has submitted a bid for funding from the early intervention youth fund for work to prevent young people getting involved in serious violence.

THe bid was outlined as the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, which scrutinises the work of Mrs Bourne, heard a report on the work the police are doing with schools and other educational establishments.

THe report outlined a seven per cent increase in recorded crimes relating to educational establishments. THis included a 45 per cent rise in sexual offences.

Mark Streater, chief executive of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, said the total represented an increase of 0.12 crimes a school.

THe increase in sexual offences was down to schools being more pro-active in reporting cases of sexting, in which young people sent explicit images of themselves on mobile phones.

THe panel heard Sussex Police had appointed 22 youth prevention officers to strengthen links between the schools and colleges in which they spend at least a quarter of their time.

"THe emphasis is very much on trying to avoid the criminalisation of children rather than schools just asking for police interventions that tip them into the criminal justice system," said Mr Streater.

"If our bid for government funding is successful, hopefully we will be able to do far more at an early stage to prevent young people being drawn into really problematic areas."

During the meeting, at County Hall in Lewes, Mrs Bourne also updated the panel about a new way of handling police complaints from next April. THis would see Mrs Bourne, rather than the Chief Constable, have the final say in appeals against the result of complaints about the police.

A PAIR of runners from a Chichester dental practice took on this year's Great South Run. Practice owner Dr Magdalena Butler and clinical co-ordinator Sarah Stone, from Family Dental Clinic in Chichester, braved a gruelling training regime again this year to raise much needed funds for Alzheimer’s Society.

THe pair completed the tenmile run in 2017 and raised more than £500 for the charity that is dear to their hearts.

Sarah said: “We both competed in the Great South Run last year and enjoyed the atmosphere and company of the other runners so much that we thought, why not do it all again this year?

“We ran in aid of Alzheimer's Society, as my mum who sadly died two years ago, had this condition.

A GROUP of women who went to school together in the 1950s have enjoyed their annual reunion.

THe ladies, pictured above, who attended Chichester High School, started a get-together in 1998 with 100 of them.

Since then, at the request of one of the women, Pat Alderton organises an annual reunion of the classes of 1951.

BREAST cancer patients in the Chichester and Bognor Regis areas will be helped by a beautiful patchwork quilt.

THe quilt, pictured below, with staff and volunteers, is the prize in a draw being held by the Friends of Chichester Hospitals towards a £30,000 x-ray guided biopsy system.

THis will help staff in the breast clinic at St Richard's Hospital diagnose and treat very small cancer nodes to save patients a longer and inconvenient journey to Worthing.

THe quilt has been made by two Friends' volunteers, Penny Haddacks and Sue Barge, after almost a year of stitching in a pattern known as Path to School.

Friends' chairman Jane Ramage said: "Penny and Sue have produced a real work of art. THe quilt would look wonderful as a bedspread or hung on a wall.

"It's been much admired since it went on display in our shop. It will help to fund vital equipment which will make a real difference for patients. Clinic staff are thrilled - the biopsy system will help them so much."

Tickets cost £1 each. Sir, I refer to your article in issue129, dated Friday, October 19, 2018.

THe article's author, Ms Jane Church, starts her letter 'Sorry to be thick here......'. Jane, for your information, you are not thick, and indeed, you should be a councillor.

With more people like yourself in post, I believe we could stem the tide of councillors, predominantly Conservative ones, who are obviously hell-bent on covering this land in bricks and mortar. THey don't care a jot what concerned residents have to say, and sadly there is huge apathy among the populace. When will residents get fire in their bellies, and start fighting these crackpot decisions?

THe area where I live, West Meads, is now gridlocked in the mornings and a racetrack by night. Motorcycles screaming along the roads and idiots in fast cars with racing exhausts causing so much noise through the night.

But no one is listening, they don't care. Why? Because they are predominantly NIMBY. It doesn't affect them.

Nice piece Jane, let's hope people start listening. I won't, however, hold my breath.

I was running and fell, hitting my face, knee, elbow and hands when a kind couple came past in their white pickup with a dog.

THe husband is a fisherman, so the wife told me, and offered to help and run me back to Bunn Leisure, where I own a caravan.

THen their friends came along in a red 4x4 car and offered to help and they felt this ride would be more comfortable for me.

THe car was driven by Linda and she had her friend with her, whose name, unfortunately, I do not recall but she gave me some water.

All four were truly caring and willing to help and I hope they might read your paper as it is freely available in Selsey and know that I am very grateful to them.

Church is a reminder of town's early days Some well-known residents have connections to St Mary Magdalene THIS week, I thought we could take a look at one of the oldest churches in our area.

THis church is mostly seen as a spire poking through the trees as we travel around the roundabout at the junction of Shripney Road and Chichester Road, or if we visit Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

It is the parish church of Bognor St Mary Magdalene. THe parish rights were acquired in 1200 and the original church is thought to have been built in the mid-13th century. It is believed the present church was built about 1404.

As the traffic rushes past the area, it is very difficult to imagine how the scene must have looked around 1810 when the area of south Bersted was referred to as 'a village, north of Bognor'.

THe two ways to reach it were by a pathway crossing fields in a direct line from the post office, or a high road, but it was suggested that no pedestrian would choose the latter.

At this time, the church was standing at the entrance to the village, but it was reported that it did not 'claim any architectural beauty'. THe path which crossed the fields is actually shown on one of the earliest maps of the area, dated 1817, and was used by the fishermen to walk to church. It was also the route taken to carry the coffins for funerals

at the church.

THe graveyard contains many famous people who have historical connections with the town. THe most famous is Sir Richard Hotham, who founded this seaside resort.

On January 18, every year, a ceremony is held to commemorate his life and his connection with the town. In the church register there is an entry for January 18, 1787, marking the laying of 'THe first foundation stone at Bognor in the Parish of Berstead'. (Note the earlier spelling) A mention in the parish records in 1679 shows a spelling of Berghstead. William Hardwicke is buried here and it was he who built the New Inn, in the High Street. THis inn became known as the Sussex and is now named the William Hardwick to provide a permanent memorial to its builder.

THe church was restored between 1879 and 1881 following an architect’s inspection in the mid-1870s, which found there were serious structural faults in the chancel walls, roof and the buttresses, which were supporting the tower.

It is interesting to read reports that even at that time there were complaints made about previous ‘tasteless alterations’ that had been carried out earlier in the century.

uglier renovations such as plaster ceilings and high pews. THis proves that even in the 19th century people were concerned about their heritage and the preservation of their history, rather than new ideas that had been previously incorporated into the church.

Another person buried here is Mary Wheatland, the famous bathing lady who was taken to her final resting-place by the Bognor fishermen in April, 1924. Coming from a large family, there are still many of Mary’s descendants in the town.

In 1999, a group of Mary’s family held a ceremony to commemorate the seat, which was placed on the outside of the church wall for weary travellers. It is the first permanent memorial to her and was provided by Bognor Regis Town Council.

THere are many other notables buried in this churchyard, including Major General C Teesdale, VC. KCMG CB RA, who died in 1893. He was a much decorated military hero who, when he retired, became Master of Ceremonies to Queen Victoria.

Since the 1900s, the vicarage has been in Victoria Drive. Originally, it was situated beside the church, in the area that is now occupied by a housing estate. THis creates a very different backdrop to the church than that experienced in the 1800s.

One of the most interesting facets of this church was the parish chest, which it is believed dates from about 1200. Looking around the inside of the church, there are so many memories of previous families or visitors to the area in the form of faces on wooden beams or at the base of ceiling beams.

On the south door, there is an escutcheon (shield with coat of arms) commemorating the visit of King George V to the church during his stay in Bognor. Also on the south wall there are the arms of Canterbury and the royal arms of the Hanoverian Kings.

THere are other curiosities such as a mass dial and a Saxon stone embedded high on an interior wall.

THe church itself has a shingled broached spire. THe interior of the spire is made of heart of oak on to which are fastened 12,000 oak shingles. It is the king post of the spire that has bent slightly to create the slight bulge in the middle of the steeple.

Work continues to be necessary and further tiling was carried out in 1986.

THere are a number of other areas around the church, which are considered to be of special architectural or historic interest. A number of the walls in surrounding streets, including a part of the boundary to the churchyard, are of rubble, brick and flint and considered to be 18th century or an even earlier construction. Other walls consist of brick piers, with semi-circular copings in addition to the flint.

Changes continue at St Mary Magdalene.

In 2002, there were major internal alterations to the church, when several pews were removed and replaced with tables and chairs to allow visitors and parishioners to have a tea and coffee lounge. Considered by some to be radical, to others seen to be a way that the church could move forward to meet the needs of the 21st century. Have no doubt that this is a superb church and certainly warrants a visit.

Blues out to stop the rot in Essex PostSport after a crushing derby day defeat CHICHESTER RFC's rotten run of form rolls on as Blues look to register only their second win of the season on the road at THurrock.

Blues head to Essex tomorrow (3pm) with just one club below them in the London South One. A crushing 44-21 loss away at Brighton last weekend leaves Scott Ashley's injury-hit side second bottom and in desperate need of a victory to lift the gloom around Oaklands Park.

Tomorrow's trip to the bank of the THames pitches the Blues against a mid-table side who have won their last two in what is a very competitive division.

But Chi know that a victory would make everything look a little rosier and lift them away from the dropzone.

A key aim for Ashley is to try and find some consistency, with injuries meaning he has rarely had a settled XV in consecutive matches this season.

THe disruption continued against Sussex rivals Brighton last weekend. Blues made eight changes to the team that lost to Dartfordians at the start of the month.

Hungarian international Baz Magda was

among those to come into the pack.

Chi did make a fast start, however, and should have taken the lead as Ed Jenkinson was denied by a match-saving tackle.

It was the hosts, though, who scored first.

But Chi hit back to go 7-5 up when skipper Charlie Wallace ran on to a Chris Johnson offload.

THat was as good as it got for Blues as Brighton took charge, going in at the break 15-7 up. THe hosts then scored three tries in the second period to take total control.

Chi did get a consolation through Jenkinson before Sam Renwick wrapped up the scoring on the whistle. * Bognor warmed up for a top-of-the-table clash with high-flying Sandown & Shanklin tomorrow (3pm) with an eight-try romp against Gosport & Fareham IIs last weekend.

THe 53-3 victory in the Hampshire Avenue sunshine moved the Purple and Greens up to joint second in the table, alongside Sandown & Shanklin, who had an off-day against pacesetters Basingstoke.

Head coach Billy Toone knows the trip to the Isle of Wight will be a tougher test but he was delighted with his young side's performance.

DARTS: Micky Rowland was the star of the show in week three of the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out Darts League as the Legends A player helped his team to a 17-4 hammering of Newtown Raiders.

Rowland threw just 40 darts in his matches, which included one maximum as he chalked up a 25 point average.

Record turnout for Bognor Park Run

SCORES of runners put their best foot forward as the Tone Zone running club helped the Bognor Park Run mark a milestone in style.

On the 220th edition of the 5k timed fun run held every Saturday morning in Hotham Park, the club provided volunteers and pacers from 20 minutes up to 35 minutes, to help people better their times.

A record number of Tone Zone runners ran as well, with 58 turning out to help raise the profile of the club and eight of them grabbed themselves a personal best.

Following the event, there was lots of positive feedback about how the pacers had helped runners grab a personal best or beat a specific time barrier.

Among those taking part were husband and wife duo Jackie and Mark Williamson who were all smiles as they ran the full course practically hand in hand.

On Sunday, the Great South Run again saw a good turnout for the club for a 10 mile route which takes runners through the historic

dockyard and around Portsmouth, before finishing along the seafront.

THis year Tone Zone had 27 runners take part. Daryl Fairbrother was the first home for the club finishing in a very quick time of 1:10.

He was closely followed by Gary Pidgeon who soared through to get a big personal best time of 1:13. Adam Norgett and Helana Wilmers also beat their previous PBs. Having only starting running with the club in January, Lee Hayward, Sue Hayward and Lisa Broad all finished in 1:53. Julie Ede and Tina Ede continued their strong running form to finish in 2:11. Another beginner to the club this year, Nic Baglee, finished in three hours.

Along the coast was Peter Lee, who ran the Hove Prom 10k. After narrowly missing out on his 37 minute target by just 7 seconds at the Littlehampton 10k earlier this year, Lee smashed the barrier, running a time of 36:41.

Over in Jersey, running the Spartons West Park 5k, was Tony Hancock who clocked a respectable time of 21:35.

Clack is back for Chi City as league leaders add to ranks

'Ladies are going places' NEW Chichester City Ladies Nadine Bazan says 'exciting times' are ahead for the highflying Oaklands Park side.

THe experienced full back joins the ranks as Aaron Smith's side continue their march up the National League Southern Premier Division.

After making her debut in the 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers last weekend, the former Portsmouth Ladies skipper believes the club is going places Bazan, who has made more than 160 appearances and joins from Southampton Saints, said: “Joining Chichester has so far been an amazing experience. THe girls are all so welcoming and the work ethic of the whole club, players, managers, coaches and physios is inspiring.

“When Chi approached me, I was immediately excited at the opportunity to play their style of football and to be back in the National League.

“I am looking forward to being challenged and pushed to another level, and feel that Chichester is the team to do that.

“It is also a really exciting time for Chichester given their current form and I feel very

privileged to be a part of it.”

THe signing of Bazan, a proven winner at this level, is a real coup for manager Aaron Smith.

Just nine matches into his reign, his side have tasted defeat just once.

Last weekend's victory over QPR lifted Chi into second in the table, just four points behind Coventry United with a game in hand.

THe win was sealed thanks to a devastating first half performance.

Goals from Hollie Wride, Jade Widdows and Cherelle Khassal put the Green Army into a 3-0 lead before Jo Wilson got a goal back on the stroke of half-time for QPR. It was a different tale in the second-half as the hosts grew in confidence.

When Widdows was carried off with 25 minutes left to play, Chi had to battle on with 10.

But Smith watched on in pride as his side held on for three points despite Chantele Lawrence netting a late free kick.

Next for City is a first home game in six weeks when they host Cardiff City Ladies on Sunday (2pm). Admission is adults £4, concessions £1.

TABLE-TOPPING Chichester City have added to their ranks as they look to keep up their promotion push.

THe Oaklands Park side are a point clear at the top of the SCFL Premier after a nervy 1-0 victory over AFC Uckfield Town last weekend.

Ellis Martin scored the only goal of the game for Chi in first half injury time as City did just enough to return home with all three points.

With a number of sides breathing down their necks, Rutherford knows his side must keep on racking up the victories - with the focus now turning to a home match against Crawley Down Gatwick tomorrow (3pm).

City will have at least a couple of new additions in their ranks.

Among them will be tricky wideman Josh Clack, who has returned to training with the club after his release from jail following a GBH charge.

Rutherford has also secured the services of former Worthing FC midfielder Ross Edwards, who has been without a club after taking a break from the game last year.

Young Canadian footballer Emmett Dunn has also signed but is awaiting international clearance.

Sids seek second win in nine

SIDLESHAM'S slump shows no sign of stopping as Steve Bailey's side have gone nearly a month without tasting victory.

Despite a promising start to life back in step five football, those following the Recreation Ground side have witnessed only one win in eight matches in all competitions.

THeir poor form, though, has not stopped the Sids occupying mid-table in SCFL Division One. But lose at home to Storrington tomorrow (3pm) and they could drop all the way down into the drop zone.

Scoring goals has been a problem for Steve

Bailey's side as they have netted 15 in 10 league matches so far, putting them among the lowest scorers in the division.

THey did put in one of their brighter attacking displays of the year so far at home to Seaford Town on Saturday.

But the strikes from Ryan Chittock and Ben Mepham were cancelled out by four first half goals from the visitors.

Sids will be looking to keep it tighter at the back tomorrow against a side who are one place above them in the table.

THey will face an even tough test in midweek

A Ryan Morey strike early on was enough to give Daren Pearce's side the victory in what was a very poor game of football at Mile Oak last weekend.

Tomorrow, the Blues are at home, hosting bottom side Midhurst & Easebourne (3pm) knowing a win will make it three victories in a row for a side that seems to be finding their feet.

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be looking to build on a rare victory as they head to Rustington tomorrow (3pm).

THe opening three months of the season have been extremely difficult for everyone at Walton Lane.

THe early season departure of former manager Dennis Hughes has left the first team trying to play catch up.

But they are slowly making progress, winning their first game in six last weekend after beating league new boys Brighton Electricity. After falling behind in the first half, Bosham hit their stride in the second thanks to a Ryan Coombes brace and late strike from Patrick Bulbeck sealed the three points.

Fourth vs second as Lions host YM PAGHAM'S title credentials will be put to the test this weekend as the unbeaten Lions welcome in-form Horsham YMCA to Nyetimber Lane (3pm).

Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds' side are yet to taste defeat in the SCFL Premier this season. But a failure to turn chances into victories means that Pagham are losing ground on the pacesetters.

A 2-2 draw against newly-promoted Lingfield last weekend means the Lions are now five points behind leaders Chichester.

On reflection, it was two points dropped as Pagham gave away two second half goals that eventually cost them dear.

Callum Overton gave them the lead twice, the first being a well-taken penalty just before

the break. But missed chances came back to haunt Pagham as Lingfield capitalised on two mistakes to share the spoils.

With second place YM heading south tomorrow, the Lions will be keen to show that they do possess the killer instinct against a side who have won four of their past five in all competitions.

THe top-of-the-table clash will be followed on Tuesday with a trip to SCFL Division One side Billingshurst on Tuesday in the third round of the RUR Cup (7.45pm).

Following defeat in the Peter Bentley Cup to arch rivals Chichester City a fortnight ago, Pagham will have an extra incentive to progress in a trophy and bring yet more silverware to Nyetimber Lane.

Pearce: Character needed for Bognor to end depressing run Next Game

BRACKNELL TOWN (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is backing his young side to show real character in ending what he's called a 'depressing run'.

Rocks fans were on cloud nine a fortnight ago after seeing their team defeat Bostik Premier leaders Tonbridge Angels 2-1 away.

But, since then, an injury hit side has failed to win in three matches, with the club waving goodbye to their unbeaten league record and hopes of silverware in the process.

Two of those matches have come in the past week, with a 0-0 draw against Margate in the league followed by a 2-1 loss away to Hythe Town in the Velocity Trophy.

With a trip to Bostik South Central side Bracknell Town looming tomorrow (3pm) in the FA Trophy, Pearce will hope a match against lower league opposition will be the perfect opportunity to rediscover that winning feeling.

Pearce said: "We have gone from a wonderful position where we should have launched on to something good to a very depressing three games.

"We will find out a lot about the character of the team in how we respond to that."

Despite the poor run, Rocks remain well in contention at the top of the Bostik Premier.

THe point picked up against Margate puts them fourth in the league, four points off Tonbridge at the top.

Rocks really should have claimed the

victory, though, as they spurned a series of chances against a solid but unspectacular mid-table side.

THe same could be said for Tuesday's cup match in Kent against a lower league side.

Tommy Scutt had given Pearce's side the lead before two second half goals saw them dumped out of the league cup.

Pearce said: "In the three games that we have not won we have dominated possession in every one. We could have won every one by three clear goals and the opposition couldn't complain. I am very disappointed."

THe reason for the drastic change in fortunes is not obvious, although a growing injury list cannot help.

Defenders Corey Heath, Keaton Wood and Joe Dandy, along with attackers Dan Smith and Jimmy Wild, are all out with injuries although Brad Lethbridge will be back for the Bracknell trip.

Pearce said: "It's not a coincidence, if you lose good players in good positions you will suffer. We don't have the luxury of three of four players at every position so we have to take it on the chin.

And as for Bracknell?

He said: "We do not know not much about them. We've played four teams from the level below this season and have won one, drawn one and lost two. Our record is not great but we will prepare as well as we can."

Rocks young guns up for cup THE UNBEATEN record in the league may have gone, but at least Rocks still have a cup or two to look forward to.

THe next fortnight will see Bognor try and find safe passage in the FA Trophy and the Sussex Senior Cup. After the Rocks' 2-1 defeat against Hythe Town on Tuesday evening in the Velocity Trophy, the two competitions are the last chance the club has of cup glory this season.

Manager Jack Pearce, though, will be sure to use the cups as a chance to blood some of the promising youngsters at the club.

THere's good news for fans, too, as they can watch the Rocks take on Seaford Town in a Sussex Senior Cup second round clash at Nyewood Lane at discounted prices.

Pearce's men host the SCFL Division One side on Tuesday November 6 (7.45pm). Both clubs have agreed admission prices of ÂŁ5 for adults and under 18s for free.

Bognor last played Seaford in the same competition in November, 2010, winning 6-0.

Rocks secretary Simon Cook said none of the players who featured that day remained at the club, adding: "No surprise as some of our first team would have been nine years old at the time!"

QUITE a lot has changed in a fortnight since I last wrote this column.

We went from beating Bostik Premier leaders Tonbridge Angels to then losing two and drawing one of our next three matches.

When that drop off in form happens you often get asked what the reason is. THe simple answer is I don't really know!

I think we are probably a bit low on confidence at the moment as we are not taking chances and we are defending very poorly.

It's only natural but the longer in games that you do not score, if you are making silly mistakes and then giving away goals, your confidence only gets worse.

I don't think anyone needs to start worrying yet, though. We need to get one or two goals and then I think we will have a bit of belief back in the side.

After beating the league leaders away from home, we were supposed to be on a roll.

But since then we've not won.

I don't think complacency comes into it.

THe match at home to Folkestone when we lost 4-2 was a one off to be honest.

THe goals we conceded were horrendous and due to really bad defensive errors.

It doesn't matter how many chances that you can create, when you concede four at home then you will never win.

Having said that, we were good going forward and could have got a point out of it if we'd taken the chances that we had.

It was the same with Margate.

It was a disjointed match with the injury to their player - I hope he is making a good recovery now - but we should have won.

We are definitely getting into the right positions but whether it's due to final ball not being there, a lack of composure or simply luck, we're just not finding the back of the net.

We have to take extra care in the final third. THe effort is

there and we are still working hard to get the chances but we are just not putting them away.

Getting players back like Keaton and Dan Smith will also help as that will give us a little bit more belief.

THe draw on Saturday was followed by a trip to Hythe Town in midweek.

A long trip like that on a Tuesday evening is not ideal but it is what it is.

For me, I started work early and finished at 3pm and ate in the car on the way down.

How I get to those types of matches will always depend on how far it is and where I am working that day.

Against Hythe, I was working in Bognor so I got a lift down with Jack and Holly.

I know the Portsmouth players got a van with six of them in there and the Brighton lot travelled down in one car.

Despite the long trip, I think our focus was there. We didn't play that badly and in terms of creating chances we did more than them.

But, once again, our defending was terrible and we can't finish to save our lives at the moment. THat needs to change.

Next up is Bracknell, a side ranked one league below us.

THis does not mean anything, though, as we have already played Sudbury and Hythe from the same level and we have not won any of them.

THe may be from a lower league but they do not play a lower standard football.

Of course being the cup, we want to play well. THoughts about a cup run do not come into now, however, as we're taking it game by game.

Once you start getting three or four games in that's when you start to think 'we are doing well here' and start to look ahead.

When it's the first round, you just want to get your foot in the door and get into the next round. But it definitely will not be easy at all.
