Warden to make town safer NEW COMMUNITY warden Martin Caiger means business in Bognor Regis.

Mr Caiger started work on Monday as the first sign of the town’s Business Improvement District scheme in practice.

His 40 hours a week patrolling the BID area around the centre are being

funded by businesses to make shoppers feel safer and to protect traders against criminals.

He has taken on the role of community warden after five months as a business warden, which Bognor Regis shared with other towns in the region. Mr Caiger said: “During that time, I would say I

have detained 20 people, mainly for shoplifting, and there have been some incidents of anti-social behaviour.

“I have seen people walking away as well when they see me and I regard it as good that they see me as a deterrent.”

Mr Caiger has also retrieved goods which have been stolen from shops in

other incidents.

He has the power to detain suspects in handcuffs because his employer, SWL security services, is recognised by Sussex Police under the community safety accreditation scheme because it has met the force’s vetting procedures.

Festival will have community feel A REAL community feel to this year's Southdowns Music Festival in Bognor Regis will see the town come alive with music.

THe event will feature its first ukulele festival with a gathering of the players of the four-stringed instrument creating a spectacular performance on the weekend's final day.

THe big seaside sing will also bring together eight great choirs from London and West Sussex.

THese events will bring the town centre alive with music and are in addition to a great line-up of headliners such as the Steve Harley Acoustic Trio, TRADarrr, Merry Hell and Dervish.

Festival chairman Roger Nash said: "THere'll be loads of fantastic free, plus ticketed, events with over 90 different performances extending over four days.

"We're very pleased to welcome the first ever Southdowns Ukulele Festival, featuring 12 excellent ukulele groups from West Sussex and East Hampshire with free workshops and jams happening all over the town centre.

"We're also delighted to stage a 'ukulele spectacular' featuring one of the UK's top ukulele acts, Pete Brown & LOCUM on the afternoon of September 23.

"Later on Sunday afternoon will also see a grand 'ukulele jam of jams' in the performance marquee on the Place St Maur."

THe big seaside sing will see the eight choirs come together at the small performance marquee in London

Road at 4pm on the final two days of the festival. THey will spend both days performing at different locations around the town.

THe latest festival takes place from September 20 to 23 at nine town venues.

THe packed programme means there will never be a dull moment in its mix of free children's entertainments, giant festival markets and dance programme.

Folk trio Kadia will open the festival at 7.30pm on September 20 with a concert in the Regis Centre's Alexandra THeatre.

THe next day will see the Marking Your Mark special ukulele concert at 2.30pm in the performance marquee on the Place St Maur. THis will be followed at 4.30pm in the marquee with a songwriting and blues ukulele workshop led by Dave Soothill.

Performances later that day will see Merry Hell at the Alexandra THeatre after a concert by O'Hooley and Widow. THe great Celtic sounds of Celtic Simbel will be at Tao bar in the High Street.

Saturday sees a host of performances during the day, with the Steve Harley Acoustic Trio taking top billing at 9.15pm in the Alexandra THeatre.

Other venues will include the Regis Centre's studios and Gallery Room as well as the William Hardwicke and the marquees on the Place St Maur and in the High Street.

Sunday's headline act will be Dervish at 9pm in the Alexandra THeatre. Other venues are also involved in the day.

DUMPED tyres in Pagham have prompted a major investigation.

THe four tyres were among 270 left across the Arun district during the recent bank holiday weekend.

Arun District Council has appealed for witnesses to the incidents at five locations.

As well as Church Lane in Pagham, large quantities of the tyres were dumped around Arundel in Blakehurst Lane, Crossbush Lane, Tortington Lane and Binsted Lane.

A further 20 tyres were abandoned in Madehurst Lane, Arundel.

cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "We take fly-tipping very seriously and are keen to catch the offenders.

"We were appalled to discover that such a large quantity of tyres had been dumped over the weekend.

"If you witnessed this crime taking place, or have any information which could help us to track down the culprits, please get in touch."

f Aldwick Cricket Club members as work starts on their new pavilion CRICKETERS are already looking forward to next season in their new clubhouse.

Aldwick Cricket Club's members are set to be able to enjoy the facilities of the building in time for the 2019/20 season.

It will replace the previous building, at the Brooks Lane site, after it was destroyed by fire 19 months ago.

Builders started this week to enable the work to be finished by next spring.

THe club and Arun District Council, which owns Felpham Recreation Ground, where the club plays its home games, have joined together to get the project underway.

Ian Guppy, the club's web site administrator, said: "After the fire in 2017, the response from the local community was overwhelming, and we are happy to have got to where we are today.

"THe club has been struggling to carry

on, and with the stark reality that a club that's been part of the part of the community for many years would be forced to fold, this new facility will help to secure its future at its current location.

"THe new facility will also ensure we can re-introduce our colts set up, which will aid the club's future and help us become a key part of the community again."

Along with some £100,000 from the district council, the project has been supported by more than £10,000 in donations from generous fellow cricket clubs and members of the public.

"We are extremely grateful for all donations received towards the project," said Mr Guppy. "We also thank the team at Arun for their continued patience and understanding and we specifically thank Paul Broggi - property, estates and facilities manager - for his work on the

project in seeking the necessary funding to get this project to a conclusion."

He also thanked Dean Lancaster, at construction company Galliford-Try, who has begun work to refurbish the toilet block at the cricket club as part of a community project.

Arun's cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: "We are delighted to be supporting this project to get a new clubhouse for this fantastic cricket club and look forward to seeing the new building fully in use for the start of next year's cricket season."

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "THis is a popular recreation ground and we're very pleased that, by helping to fund the new clubhouse, the council is helping to secure the future of cricket at this location."

THe police can also choose to share information with him when they think it will benefit his work.

Mr Caiger began his new role on Monday. Businesses in the BID area – from the Royal Norfolk Hotel to Butlin’s and up to the University of Chichester - will be able to contact him on a mobile phone number which will be circulated to them or on the Shopwatch radio scheme.

He is already familiar to most businesses because of his previous work in the town. He is also lives in the area.

“You certainly see a different side to the town centre when you are working like this rather than coming here to shop. I have got the passion for the town and I want to try and make it like it used to be,” he said.

THe 12-month contract between Bognor Regis BID and SWL security services fulfils one of the priorities of a safer and more welcoming town centre set out by the BID supporters when they voted in the summer of 2017 for it to be formed. THat approval saw the BID team start work last April.

Wilkos store manager Mark Halls is a director of Bognor Regis BID and said the new warden would benefit everyone who worked and shopped in the town centre.

“By having a uniformed presence on patrol in the town centre, it makes people feel safer,” he said.

Wilkos was one of the stores visited nearly five months ago by Sussex Police assistant chief constable Laurence Taylor and Katy Bourne, the Sussex police and crime commissioner, after anger from businesses at the amount of disorder in the town centre.

Mr Halls said: “I don’t feel there’s been much change in the situation since that visit. I’ve not seen much increase in the police presence.

“We all know the police’s resources are very stretched and there needs to be an additional method of policing our town.

“Anything we can do as businesses to support the police has to be a benefit for the people of Bognor Regis.”

Bognor Regis BID chairman Paul Wells said: “THe warden service is a welcome development for the BID area and will play an important part in providing a high visibility presence and providing an important service to the levy payers.”

THe BID is funded by a 1.5 per cent levy on most business premises in its area. THis is calculated to produce £142,000 annually during the scheme’s five years.

THe new community warden differs from the business wardens, which are a pilot scheme funded by Southern Co-op and which can see them moved anywhere in the company’s area.

But Mr Caiger is not replacing the police and crime incidents should still be reported to Sussex Police.

` Toilet upgrades WORK began this week to improve public toilets in Felpham.

Arun District Council's contractor, Green Manor Building, arrived on site at the Culver Road loos on Monday for the refurbishment.

THe project will include some internal and external reconfiguration, the replacement of plumbing and electrical services, replacement sanitary ware and a total redecoration. It is due to last until late October.

Work will then start on the same changes to the loos in Hotham Park and is set to last until Christmas.

Two other sets of toilets around Littlehampton are also being improved in the £370,000 initiative.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, said: "THe council is keen to provide quality facilities for the public and, although we are aware the work will cause some disturbance, the result will be modern, fresh and safe toilets for residents and visitors alike."

` Phones stolen TWO mobile phones were stolen when a vehicle in Slindon Bottom Road, Slindon, was raided on August 22. THe thief gained entry by smashing the driver's side window.

Warning over town's future A WARNING has been issued about the future of Bognor Regis.

Cllr Jan Cosgrove said the town was at a ‘crucial turning point’ as Arun District Council pressed ahead with its regeneration proposals.

He sounded the alarm about its scheme for the Regis Centre site in which a hotel would be built by Whitbread on the old fire station site next to the town hall in Clarence Road.

Whitbread would surrender its lease for the Regis Centre back to Arun and he feared Arun Arts, which runs the centre, would also hand back the sub-lease it had with Whitbread.

“THat puts in danger the very future of our town as an economic and social entity,” said Cllr Cosgrove. “THere is no news about a new theatre. THis is not what this town needs.

“We need to consult the people of this town urgently about what they want and not what Arun thinks is good for us.

“THis is a serious matter. THis is the future of the town in its most crucial area. I do not trust Arun on this matter.”

He described the district council as being hellbent in proceeding with its plans to replace the Regis Centre with a winter garden, flats, shops and exhibition space.

Arun has said a larger theatre – with some 450 seats – would be included in the plans. But Cllr Cosgrove told the town council on Monday that Arun had no funding for the scheme and he had heard those plans had been scaled

back to 187 sets. THis is about half of the current capacity.

Cllr Damien Enticott (I, Hatherleigh) said it was obvious Arun had no money to pay for the redevelopment proposals.

He believed the district council should instead look after the seafront buildings it owned rather than letting them fall into disrepair.

Cllr Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) said he believed the town’s regeneration should be carried out with style, vision and a good design.

“Arun has now come up with this deal with Whitbread allegedly for an hotel on this site. “We don’t know the style, the design or the impact of it. We don’t know anything about it.”

Cllr Jeanette Warr (LD, Hotham) said Arun had ignored the Regis Centre for years and would have been willing to see it close in the 1990s in a funding crisis.

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey), who is a member of Arun Arts, said: “Arun Arts will not give back its sub-lease until we have got something as good as, or better, in its place.

“It’s being run by professional people who are very experienced and know what they are doing.”

He said Arun Arts received funding from the district council for its publicity officer but did not get any other support.

Former Arun Arts chairman Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said he was alarmed Whitbread would be able to open its 80-bedroom hotel before another theatre, meeting hall or bar was built.

Town centre's manager goes

BUSINESS leaders in Bognor Regis have axed the role of town centre manager.

THe contract of the position's only occupier, Toyubur Rahman, has been ended. It is believed his official leaving date is today.

Mr Rahman oversaw the vote which led up to the Business Improvement District being approved by firms around the town centre last summer.

But the BID board, which has taken over the running of the levy being collected from business premises in the district, has decided to do without a town centre manager.

Mr Rahman said: "I am very disappointed at this turn of events. I had hoped to continue as the BID manager to see the BID becoming fully established and settled into a sustainable organisation.

Mr Rahman also played a large part in securing the popular ice rink last Christmas and staged innovative events such as the Aerial Birdman in the precinct.

Jeremy Pardey, the resort director of Butlin's, said Mr Rahman's tenacity and 'can do' attitude played a large part In encouraging businesses to back the BID. "He managed to demonstrate the value of the town centre management in the early years which is why the businesses could see the benefit of a BID," he said.

Bognor Regis Town Council clerk Glenna Frost said it had supported Mr Rahman during his years in the town.

"During this time, the town centre has moved forward in many respects which demonstrates what can be achieved through collaborative partnership working," she said.

A statement from the BID board said various structures were used by other schemes around the country and it wanted to consider the correct approach for the town. "Rest assured, the directors and partners will still be carrying out the work of the BID in the meantime," it said.

BID chairman Paul Wells said: "THe team's focus is now on working with our partners to deliver a range of exciting Christmas activities."

Business site for sale DOZENS of workers at a major business site in Bognor Regis are set to find themselves with a new property landlord.

Castlegrove Business Park is for sale for at least £5,030,000. THe site on the South Bersted Industrial Estate in Durban Road is fully let to six tenants.

THe current leaseholder of the plot of some 1.28 hectares is looking to sell all eight units together.

Nick Bradbeer, of the joint estate agents, SHW, said: "THere has been some interest in the site but not enough to sell it.

"It's being sold as an investment and it will be bought as an investment. THe new investor will put their money into the lease, look after the buildings and look after the tenants.

"We will carry on looking for a buyer. I am always confident we will find one but these things can take a bit of time."

TV show is laugh AMANDA FORTHRIGHT was not amused - but the audiences of Bognor Sunshine Today most definitely were.

THe anchorwoman of the TV station's prestigious news bulletin could see her ambitions disappearing as calamity after calamity afflicted her latest broadcast.

Her travails, though, were highly amusing for audiences at the debut production from the Bognor Institute of Laughter.

THe show was performed twice at the Regis Centre last Saturday as well as the Laburnum Centre in the town the previous day and Dementia Support's Sage House in Tangmere last Wednesday.

Hilary Strong, who set up the institute, said: "THe performances went really well. We developed them as they went along and included more audience participation. THe show at the Laburnum Centre was particularly successful. We had a fantastic audience there."

THe tone of the show was set by the outside broadcast by Steve THe Roving Reporter about Bognor Regis' enviable sunshine record but filmed in a storm.

"People make fun of Bognor, which isn't fair," said Hilary. "Ours was more about nice, warm humour, which the audiences appreciated."

Both Amanda and Steve were played by professional actors, Tara Cowley and Will Barnes, with seven institute members involved in staging the shows.

"It was ambitious to merge filmed and live segments in the show. We are going to edit the production and put it on YouTube for people to see.

"It's a good example of how the institute has created something and we may well revive it at some time," Hilary added.

THe institute is part of the Making THeatre Gaining Skills Community Interest Company based in the town's railway station.

"THe current owner has been really nice and helpful to us when we were setting up. Hopefully, we will have a good relationship with whoever takes over," he said.

Mr King and his wife, Anna, moved into their current premises in February 2014, having started at the Arena Sports Centre four years earlier. THey have grown to coach more than 500 participants a week.

` War tribute stolen THIEVES who have stolen a wartime tribute in Yapton have been condemned.

THe 5ft high silent soldier silhouette went from outside the village's Coop shop in Main Road.

THe metal reminder of the loss of British and Allied soldiers in the First World War is an initiative from the Royal British Legion to mark the centenary of the end of the war.

Yapton's MP, Nick Gibb, said "When you think of the sacrifices previous generations made in the First World War for the protection of our country and our freedoms, stealing a memorial is hugely disrespectful both to the memory of those who died and to their descendants.

"I hope, and expect, the police and our justice system to take the firmest action.”

As reported, several of the silent soldiers have been installed around the Bognor Regis area.

THe one in Yapton was one of the results of a £500 donation by Southern Co-op to the legion. It was stolen overnight on August 29.

Rebecca Gardener, manager at Southern Co-op's Yapton store, said: "Having the war memorials placed all over the area has been really good to see as they are a gentle reminder of the important 100 year anniversary.

"Our customers have been very surprised that someone would just pull it out of the ground but we are hopeful they might have a change of heart and return it.

"If not, we are aware a few local residents are already planning fundraising activities for a replacement which we will wholeheartedly support."

Town's venue survey agreed AN AUDIT of community spaces around Bognor Regis is to be carried out by town councillors.

THey agreed at their meeting on Monday to conduct the exhaustive survey to find out as much information as possible about meeting areas in the town.

THe work will be undertaken by its community engagement and environment committee and include advice about the extent of, and the need for, community space around the town centre.

A motion by Cllr Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) calling for the survey was backed by his fellow councillors.

He said the report would enable the council to take an informed view about important decisions such as buying the town hall or the Royal Hotel.

Cllr Jan Cosgrove said: “THis council’s members have expressed a need for a look at community space availability in the town.

“But where is the evidence for whether we need community space and, secondly, what community space do we need?

“THere are other forms of community space. THis is an issue about the quality of space as well as the quantity.

“We should be quite clear why we want to do things.”

Cllr Cosgrove said a survey could reveal sufficient meeting spaces in the town to cater for the needs of various sized gatherings without the town council needing to buy one.

“What have we got, how is it available

and on what terms?” he asked. “THere are all sorts of halls all over the place.”

“If we are going to buy a property, let’s make sure it’s what the town needs. Is the town hall the space the town needs?

Does it have the facilities?

“Let’s not go round bothering about what we will buy until we need to buy it.

THis is a very simple, first step to take.”

Potential meeting places included the Picturedrome Cinema, which is owned by the town council, as well as the Regis Centre's theatre and studios.

Other current spaces which could be used included the Jeneses centre, THe Hub, THe Gordon Centre, St Wilfrid’s Church, Granddad’s Front Room and the Regis School of Music, he stated.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said it would be useful to have an audit of meeting places.

“Bognor Regis will still need a large area where it can hold exhibitions, meetings and concerts. THe town deserves it. I am concerned it is not in (Arun District Council’s) regeneration plans.”

Cllr Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) said the survey showed the need for a Bognor Regis masterplan.

“THe masterplan should not just be what Arun District Council comes up with. It should be what we want.

“It’s all about what we want to see and what Bognor Regis should be looking for and aiming for,” he said.

THe report should be presented to the town council at its November or January meetings. It will include details about the capacity, pricing and availability of the featured venues.

Independent group on town council welcomes new ally LABOUR'S member on Bognor Regis Town Council has joined forces with its Independent members.

Cllr Jan Cosgrove (Orchard) has allied with Cllrs Jim Brooks (Marine) and Steve Goodheart (Hotham) for the rest of the 16-strong council's term in office until the elections next May. Cllr Brooks, the Independent leader on the town council, said: "Jan made it clear he puts Bognor first, as we do, and we also respect his wish to stay with the party under which he stood for election.

"THe thing is - there are many issues on which we agree because we feel

they are good for our town."

Cllr Goodheart said: "THe meeting we had with Jan was really positive and I feel excited that this could be a new way for councillors to work together.

"Maybe there are other councillors who feel as we three do."

Cllr Cosgrove said: "I'm grateful to Jim and Steve. We hope soon to announce a really positive initiative which builds on this move and which is based on mutual respect."

THe move was reported at Monday's council meeting by the town clerk, Glenna Frost.

AWARD-WINNER Jo Enright will be bringing comedy to a Bognor Regis church this month.

Jo's live performances have seen her given recognition for being among the best women comics in the country.

She is the latest guest lined up by Opengate Church for a girls' night out as part of its popular Cherished events.

Jo says: "I have always had faith but I met a spirit-filled Catholic drama teacher in my early 20s and asked her to teach me what she knew about prayer and the Bible.

"It was fascinating and life-changing. I became a comic at about the same time.

My work and my faith are intertwined."

Jo will be appearing at the church in Victoria Drive on September 28.

Most recently seen as Angela in the ITV sitcom The Job Lot, Jo has also starred alongside Steve Coogan in I'm Alan Partridge and Peter Kay in Phoenix Nights.

She has crafted a completely unique style of stand-up comedy during nearly two decades of entertaining audiences and thrives on live performances for which she has won several awards.

THese include the 2002 Chortle Award for best female circuit comic and the best female on the Jongleurs comedy circuit award in 2001.

Jo will be supported by Cathy Burton, a singer/songwriter who has been sharing her 'life songs' with audiences all over the world for 20 years.

She has seven albums to her name as well as several EPs. Doors open on the night at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. THere will be a paid bar for pre-show and interval drinks and snacks.

` Play area demand A RENEWED call has been made for action to improve safety at a Bognor Regis play area.

Town councillor Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said more work was needed at the Hothampton site next to the car park.

"THe work Arun have done there is OK but the walls are too low and the hedges are compromised," he said at Monday's town council meeting.

"We would not only look stupid but also pretty culpable if something did happen there."

Cllr Tony Gardiner (C, Marine North) said he saw a mother had tied up one of the site's gates, leading to the car park, with a piece of string.

"It's not just dogs getting in there, it's children getting out. So, there's two problems there," he said.

THe site is set to be replaced by Arun District Council's proposed linear park. But Cllr Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said, whatever the merits of that scheme, a year was too long to wait for improvements to take place.

Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey) said he would talk to Arun about the issue.

Debate to be held about ice rink call CALLS for an ice rink in Bognor Regis are to be discussed thanks to a petition signed by more than 2,400 people.

THe petition, from the Bognor Regis Civic Society, was presented to Arun District Council in May. It asked for a permanent rink to be incorporated into the town’s regeneration plans following the success of a temporary rink put up for last Christmas.

Because the petition was signed by more than 1,500 people, it has to be debated by the full council, and has been placed on next Wednesday's agenda.

A report due to be put before the meeting states that, between November 23 and January 8, some 8-10,000 people visited the temporary rink in Place St Maur on the seafront.

THe report recognises the ‘strong local support’ for a permanent rink

but highlighted the lack of suitable sites in the town centre and the ‘clear commercial reasons’ it had not already been delivered.

THe report adds: “Notwithstanding the concerns about the commerciality of creating a permanent ice rink, the council would clearly wish to provide non-financial support to any commercial operator who considered they could make a commercial success of creating an ice rink on the outskirts of the town.”

At the launch of the petition in February, civic society deputy chairman Hugh Coster said: "People have called for an ice rink in the town for many years.

"It was obvious from the popularity of the temporary rink at Christmas how well used a permanent rink would be."

THe meeting will be held at 6pm in the council chamber at Arun Civic Centre, Maltravers Road in Littlehampton.

ROCK musicians from the Bognor Regis area have gone back to the sixties.

THe Presidents are revelling in the release of a song which was meant to be issued by their record company some 50 years ago.

THe group features songwriter Robin Mayhew, from Barnham, and Aldwickbased Tony Busson and they presumed She Said Yeah had been lost on its way to their record company, Decca Records.

Robin, 77, said: "It has been found 53 years later and was released by Ace Records Harlesden on a compilation CD. "As lead guitarist Martin Cowton was over here from Australia for a holiday,I managed to get all the members back together and make a video of the recording.

We have a combined age of 380 years so a little older than THe Rolling Stones who we once supported."

She Said Yeah was intended to be the follow up to THe Presidents' initial release, Candy Man, and was written by Roddy Jackson and the late Sonny Bono.

THe Stones included their version of She Said Yeah on their Decca album, Out of Our Heads. "I always thought it was a bit odd. I mean our version was lost and they bring it out," said Robin.

He was a music professional in the 1970s and worked for top names like David Bowie before going into retail with his wife of 52 years, Mandy. He has also written a CD, Shallow and Deeper.

Prom party provides plenty of fun in the sun in Felpham for all ages FUN ON THe Prom is set to continue providing enjoyment in Felpham well into the next decade.

Parish councillors are keen to set the dates for the community day on the seafront until the mid-2020s.

THe latest staging was another success, with its packed programme of live entertainment for all ages, stalls and fireworks into the night.

Felpham Parish Council chairman Cllr Dave Smart said: "We are planning to hold this event again.

"We are trying to get hold of the tide times for the next five years, so we can start to get a few things planned.

"THat way, we can work with a few other events that go on in the village to make sure we don't clash with them.

"We want to have a good spread of events throughout the year in Felpham."

THe tide times are essential to the success of Fun on the Prom because the last part of the day involves a firework display on the beach.

THis year's pyrotechnic spectacular was adopted to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War. Father John Challis, vicar of St Mary's Church in the village, spoke a few words about the war before a maroon was fired to signal a minute's silence in memory of those from Felpham - and elsewhere who were killed in the conflict.

A second maroon signalled the start of the fireworks with a patriotic red, white and blue theme.

seven-and-a-half hours of community enjoyment on the seafront on the green next to Blakes Road and Felpham Sailing Club.

Fun on the Prom has been held by Felpham Parish Council for more than ten years. Last Saturday's staging enjoyed perfect weather.

"It's been a successful day, with thousands of people coming along," said Cllr Smart. "I'd like to thank the people who have the beach huts here for their flexibility and co-operation in allowing us to hold this event once a year.

"A lot of hard work has gone into today by two councillors and a group of volunteers.

THere is a lot of effort involved."

Cllr Smart also awarded prizes to the handful of people who turned up in early 1900s period costumes to mark the First World War. THe event began with three hours of children's entertainment. Magic and bubbles and rides and inflatatables were among the enjoyment provided.

Ben Hasker, aka Mr Punch and Judy, returned with his popular shows.

He said: "It's just classic pantomime humour. It's children's first experience of live entertainment and I love it."

Magician Nick Clark said: "It's all about seeing the children's faces and people enjoying themselves."

Fellow magician Tom Foolery said: "It's nice to have a parish council putting so much effort in to an event like this.

"THere is a good community turnout and, event on a wet day, the turnout has

been good."

Some ten stalls of organisations in the area also provided further interest.

Among those present was Bognor Regis Area Neighbourhood Watch Assocation.

Its treasurer and Elmer area co-ordinator, Saundra Trebble, said she believed it was the first time it had taken part. Five potential new members had signed up in the first hour.

"We want to make people aware that we still exist and to get people to become street co-ordinators," she said. "We have 280 of the co-ordinators across the Bognor Regis area but we would like a coordinator for every street.

"THey receive alerts from the police about what has been going on and pass them on to their neighbours to make people aware and, hopefully, cut crime."

She also used the session to encourage people to report crimes, especially scams, after several visitors to the stall spoke about being subject to them.

Also present for the first time was the Royal British Legion. Its Poppy Appeal organise for Felpham, Graham Jones, said: "Hopefully, we will continue to do this.

THe money we make from selling items is good but it is also about networking and ensuring people know what we are all about."

After the stalls were packed away, the stage featured nearly four hours of music from duos Cloud9 and HnD.

` Access progress A TOPIC team set up by Bognor Regis Town Council to look at improving access to the beach is to meet next week.

THe meeting will discuss ways in which wheelchair uses and mothers with children in buggies can get across the shingle to the sand at low tides. Philip King asked the council on Monday about its progress on the matter.

Screen opening is delayed FILM-GOERS are likely to be watching the latest big screen hits in the new screen at Bognor Regis' cinema next month.

THe Picturedrome's fourth screen is due to open early in October. THis is two months later than expected.

Bognor Regis Town Council clerk, Glenna Frost, told councillors on Monday last minute delays had hit the near ÂŁ1m project since her last report.

"Members had previously been advised that the Picturedrome extension would be completed by July with the grand opening in August, 2018," she said.

"THe completion date has now been extended due in part to building control from Arun District Council, which has required proof of the fire resistance of the material covering the walls of the auditorium.

"In particular, this has meant that the cinema operator has been required to construct samples of the material for testing which has been sent to the British Research Establishment and results are expected over the next few weeks.

"THe work to finish the interior of the cinema has, therefore, been interrupted and practical completion, including sign off by building control, is now anticipated by the end of September.

"Following practical completion, contracts will be exchanged by the cinema tenant and the council and, according to the council's solicitor, the cinema could be operational one week later, subject to the legal documentation being completed within this timeframe."

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) called for the council to be allowed to switch on a sign in the cinema's tower at the front of the building to advertise the new screen.

He said a previous attempt to illuminate

the sign had been rejected by Arun District Council as being unsuited to the building's historic status.

Council members agreed to submit a planning application to Arun to see if a new bid to bring the screen to life would be successful.

THe 110-seat new screen has been constructed behind the original Picturedrome building. It has been designed to be seamlessly linked to the Grade II listed Victorian building.

Building work finished earlier in the summer after just over a year.

THe town council bought the cinema about eight years ago after the previous owner planned to turn the biggest screen into flats.

Councillors lease the premises to the Picturedrome Electric THeatre Company, which took over running the building while it was in its previous ownership.

THe company's managing director is Adam Cunard, who is also a town councillor, but was absent from the meeting when Mrs Frost gave her update.

Mrs Frost also told councillors a leak had occurred in the ceiling of Screen 3

below the tower. "Refurbishment works were undertaken to the tower back in 2011. However, it is possible that water ingress is now occurring either through the roof or the windows," she said.

A local contractor had been hired by the building's managing agents to go into the tower and described the amount of water getting in as bad. He believed it was likely to be coming from the oak frame windows, which he temporarily sealed.

A surveyor was to be hired to conduct a thorough assessment of the area, Mrs Frost added.

Katie is a walking miracle

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk AN EASTERGATE woman who has cheated death three times has urged people to sign up to become an organ donor.

Katie Reed, 37, has been given a new life thanks to a pair of donated lungs to help her overcome her cystic fibrosis.

THis week is NHS organ donation week and Katie said: "It saves lives. It gives people that quality of life again. Any transplant is not a cure and it’s not a bed of roses. You have to be true to yourself and be mentally strong.”

Katie underwent a 14-hour operation at Harefield Hospital in Uxbridge last Easter for the transplant.

Her lungs were so badly damaged by the cystic fibrosis the surgeon found it difficult to remove them. She was given 12 pints of blood and her family were told she was not going to survive.

However, Katie fought back to defy the doctors again and has been told she will live to about 41.

She was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, which fills her lungs with thick mucus, when she was three. Her mum, Mary and father, Andrew, were told she wouldn’t live past 16.

With the illness under control through medication and physio, Katie studied animal care at college with a dream of becoming a veterinary nurse. She had a horse, Millie, and lived a relatively carefree life. When she reached 18, Katie was given her first intravenous therapy to ease the pressure on her lungs.

After being given oxygen for walking, it wasn’t until she was 35 that Katie got a

bad virus and was sent to A&E with high levels of carbon dioxide in her lungs. She was transferred to the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea where doctors told Mary and Andrew she was so ill they didn’t think she would live.

Mary said: “As she had been so well up to this point, it was quite a shock to be told that. I had never even given that a thought to be honest.”

Katie was given treatment through a non-invasive ventilator to help her body push out the carbon dioxide in her lungs and was able to walk down the ward the next morning to meet her family.

But Katie had been told her outlook was still poor and she was put on the transplant list. Katie said: “THey asked me to think about going to intensive care where I would be put on a ventilator and probably wouldn’t come out.

"I thought, don’t you dare tell me that, how dare you say that. I’m only 35, there is no way you are telling me that life in me has had enough, what are you talking about? THis is not it yet.”

Katie came home and was doing well, despite being on oxygen 24 hours a day.

THen, one morning, she woke up and couldn’t breathe. She was rushed to St Richard’s Hospital and was found to have blood clots on her lungs. She was transferred to the Royal Brompton again and treated.

But, in the summer of 2017, Katie started to deteriorate and was in and out of hospital until last Easter.

She was put on the lung transplant list and waited 18 months to get her new pair of lungs. THe doctor told Katie her condition had deteriorated again and she wouldn’t make it to 2019 if a suitable pair failed to become available.

Katie said: “I told the doctor I didn’t want to die. I think it’s hard for the doctor to tell people they are going to die. I could see the doctor was helpless. I was more worried about her. She looked so stressed

because I was in tears.”

She and her family have thanked the NHS doctors, nurses, physios and cleaners who looked after her.

` Help for hospices A TIMBER and builders merchant in Chichester and Bognor Regis is to repeat its campaign for hospices.

THe Covers' Help for Hospices initiative will run from September 10 to 15 with the aim of raising £30,000. Among the hospices to benefit will be Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

THe company will donate £5 for each registered customer who makes a purchase during the event.

It has also pledged to give at least £20,000 to get the campaign off to the best possible start.

Rupert Green, the chairman of Covers, said: "THe Covers' Help for Hospices campaign has become an annual fixture on our company's calendar.

"We are delighted to be running this hugely successful campaign for a fourth consecutive year."

Volunteers from St Wilfrid's Hospice will be at Covers in Chichester on September 10 for a builders' bake off competition.

Helpers from St Barnabas House Hospice will be at the Bognor Regis depot at the same time.

THere will also be the chance to win some of the top prizes in the raffle like a £500 holiday voucher, an iPad and a luxury food hamper.

Raffle tickets cost £1 each and can be bought at all Covers' depots until September 28.

Weekend of culture will celebrate Blake A UNIQUE cultural experience by the sea is promised with this year's Blakefest in Bognor Regis.

THe annual arts festival will feature international art, music, poetry, talks and guided walks in homage to the famous poet and visionary, William Blake.

Blakefest 2018 is bigger and better than the earlier versions and will shed light on Blake's influence on the Sixties spirit of rebellion and freedom.

Headlining in the Alexandra THeatre in the Regis Centre will be 1990s new wave rebels, THe Lene Lovich Band, as well as the All THings Must Pass Orchestra with a celebration of the music of the visionary member of THe Beatles, George Harrison.

THe event will take place from September 14-16. Its main focus will be the all-day live music festival on September 15.

Festival director Rachel Searle said "THe William Blake and the spirit of the 60s event - including live music performances, poetry, arts and talks - is the centrepiece of the three-day celebration of the life and work of William Blake (1757-1827), who is nowadays recognised as a visionary poet, artist, engraver and prophet despite dying unrecognised and close to poverty."

Blake lived in the village of Felpham from 1800-1803. During that time, he saw visions of angels, was inspired to compose the text that became Jerusalem and also ended up on trial for assault and

sedition after an argument with a soldier outside one of the area's pubs.

After the success of last year's Blakefest, Ms Searle has gathered together different forms of art to celebrate Blake.

"Blake's work has spread through the generations, persistently inspiring groups of artists, beginning with THe Ancients, including Samuel Palmer, George Richmond and Edward Calvert, who all studied directly under Blake until his death," said Ms Searle.

"Modernists, such as James Joyce, clearly show Blake's influence and his influence also inspired such 60s beat generation poets and performers as Allen Ginsberg, Michael Horovitz, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Patti Smith."

THe 2018 line-up on September 15 is headlined by acclaimed post-punk and new wave legend, Lene Lovich.

Ms Searle said: "A 'purveyor of love songs for the weird', this performance is a real coup of Bognor and not to be missed as this will not be just a gig.

"Lovich and her superb band, headed

by Jude Rawlins, are a cut above and together create memorable eccentric dynamic events."

Second on the bill are the ten-piece All THings Must Pass Orchestra, with a range of songs by Harrison. Many of them are ingrained in popular culture.

Also performing on the night are rising star jazz vocalist Emily Dankworth, Mikey B Georgeson performing as Mr

Solo to delight the audience as an orginal British songwriter of lasting quality.

THe evening is being opened at 7pm by a talk on Blake and the 60s by the internationally-recognised and respected Tobias Churton to shed light on Blake's enduring contribution to our culture.

From mid-day, the Regis Centre's stuido will host an accompanying set of live music sessions headlined by the fastrising, exciting jazz combo, the Jamie Leeming Trio.

Jamie will also be accompanying the the Southdown Festival Poets.

Further poetry will come from the Surreal Man and the Nutter in the Shrubbery: Ciaran O'Driscoll and Margaret Farrelly with John Davies (aka Shedman) for an hour of scintillating poetry mixed with lyrical Celtic sounds.

Other performers are the varied and talented collection of artistes, Lem and the White Fire, THe Boy Wonders and David Farnan.

Alongside the wonderful music lineup there will be a graffiti art exhibition, literary walk, a free silent disco, bitesize talks and performance poetry.

Among the contributors will be Mikey B Georgeson with an art installation, An Actual Occasion, and Vincent Gray unveiling and discussing his possible Bognor Regis sculpture, Albion Rose, after his Keats sculpture in Chichester.

Barking up the right tree

RSPCA Sussex Chichester and District branch, Mount Noddy, has recently undergone some positive changes, to work even more effectively in the local area to help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs and cats in need.

Clare Palmer, previously branch manager, has now moved into a more specialised role as business and income generations manager. She will now be purely responsible for generating income, PR, overseeing the charity shop network and opening new shops, fundraising and volunteers.

Clare said: "I am very excited to be able to use my personable skills to continue to promote the branch, build the shop empire and generate income."

New animal centre manager, Susan Botherway, has spent the last five years managing various RSPCA London branches and has an extensive welfare and behaviour background.

She said: "After spending five years working with branches in central London building foster networks and outreach programs, I am looking forward to joining the Mount Noddy team and helping this south coast branch."

THe centre is extending it's opening hours to include Wednesdays and is planning to stay open longer during the day to be able to welcome more visitors.

THe self-funded branch, which

incorporates the well-known Mount Noddy Animal Centre at Eartham, relies on donations and kindness to keep the animal centre operating.

THe shops rely on donations of clothing (in any condition), bric-abrac, books, toys, shoes and bags and they directly fund the animal centre.

THe four local shops at Bognor Regis, Horsham, Chichester and Worthing are in a boutique style and you will always get a friendly welcome and find a bargain too. THe animal centre is currently looking for foster carers for resident dogs and cats, and donations

of treats, toys and peanut butter!

` Degree in holidays A DEBT-FREE degree is in prospect from Butlin's to help run its Bognor Regis resort.

THe holiday firm's parent company, Bourne Leisure, has launched a fully funded three-year BA Hons degree course in management practice.

Successful applicants on its chartered management degree apprenticeship will be paid while they study and have a guaranteed career when they graduate.

Friends walk 100 miles for city hospice appeal Former pupils are urged to register TIME is running out for former pupils of Chichester High School for Boys to be included in a commemorative booklet for its 90th anniversary.

THe celebrations for the milestone are taking place on October 20. THe organisers at the Old Cicestrians Association would like to include the names of all those who will be going along in the booklet - but the printing deadline is September 17. THose who book later than that will be omitted.

Age is just a number, except when looking for a job AS YOU are all aware if you’ve been reading my column, I moved here from London many years ago, what you may or may not know is that I own a recruitment agency.

I have been in recruitment as long as I’ve lived in Bognor. Never one to think I know it all…yeah right! THis year, I decided to put myself through the trauma of finding a job, as an experiment.

It has been over 15 years since I applied for a position. Bearing in mind, I didn’t have a CV, I knew I’d have to go back to basics.

I began trawling through job websites. I applied for more than 100 positions, mostly sales director positions. What I found was that most agencies didn’t acknowledge receipt of my CV or even call me to discuss.

I also found that my email address, which has my age on it, was a big mistake. Very quickly I amended my CV to not have any dates included, as it was obvious companies were ageist. I also realised I had to do a lot of chasing, constant phone calls and

befriending various agencies. Initially, I couldn’t believe I wasn’t snapped up and inundated with offers of interviews.

I was a qualified HR manager with years of sales experience. I admit I wasn’t up to date with buzz words such as ‘on-boarding’, which to those less in the know is induction, but I quickly caught on.

I was asked questions such as: “You’re a mother, how do you work and look after your children?"

I couldn’t say whether a man would have been asked the same thing, I like to think it would’ve been the case, but in my scepticism I’m unsure.

I did get invited for a couple of interviews. Mostly, first interviews are telephone interviews, this was a shock for me. I don’t see how you can get to know someone on the telephone, but this is the new way apparently. I did get invited for second interviews, these were young start-up companies that were big on buzz words and low on experience, and I was way too experienced.

What did I learn? If you’re in corporate, stay in corporate and climb the ladder. If you’re an independent, be prepared, it is difficult to get back into the corporate world. If you’re over 40 it is even more difficult. Age and experience can work against you and be prepared to alter your CV for the position you are applying for.

I learned to be appreciative of people applying to me for a job and to give everyone an opportunity regardless of age and sex, and 40-plus is still young.

Courgettes have the 'cor' factor for health I HAD a phone call from a lovely lady today who wanted me to talk more about products farmed here in the UK to show support for the British farmers. I get lots of calls and wonderful emails weekly from my loyal followers, and I love all the different subjects people call me about, and are passionate about.

I had already made up my mind to discuss courgettes (Zucchini) in my column this week as my daughter has been sprializing (a machine that turns vegetables into noodles) them all week, to make vegetable pasta. As we speak, Britain’s courgettes are quickly reaching their deliciously sweet, nutty peaks.

THey’re often used to bulk out sauces and dishes like spaghetti bolognaise and lasagne, but here’s why I think courgettes should be enjoyed in their own right…

Left too long in the soil, they can grow huge and bloated with water. While these green monsters might look magnificent, the best tasting courgettes are the short, slim ones – the best things come in little packages! (I have said that my whole adult life standing at only 5ft 1in!)

If you’re trying to lose weight, then you should make the courgette number one on your shopping list. THey’re super low in calories because of their high water content so you can pretty much chomp to your heart’s content (providing you don’t deep fry them!).

THey may not pack the nutritional punch of other green vegetables (broccoli, kale etc.) but they do contain significant levels of potassium to control blood pressure and

vitamin C to boost your immune system. THe courgette’s thin dark skin is high in soluble fibre, which slows digestion and stabilises blood sugar levels – potentially getting rid of those pesky mid-afternoon sweet cravings.

Soluble fibre can also prevent constipation and help with those horrible IBS symptoms so many people endure.

You can buy courgettes from most big supermarkets as well as small farmers markets (when in season). Try to buy locally sourced courgettes as supermarkets are known for shipping vegetables thousands of miles despite them being in season a few minutes down the road.

When cooking, try not to cook courgettes with too much water as they can go quite soggy. THe best way to cook them is to get a good crunch. Slice them in thin chip shapes, place them on foil and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkling of salt, spices and herbs, then place under the grill until

You can eat these as a snack, or with a salad.

Alternatively, you can roast courgettes up with a selection of other vegetables to enjoy with classic meat and potatoes, or you can make Greek-style fritters on the BBQ with lots of chopped herbs such as garlic. Or you can eat them raw, and as mentioned, use a spiralizing machine to make them into spaghetti, which makes them more interesting.

When eating natural, locally in season foods, it makes you feel strong and positive. I believe the reason we get foggy, tired or demotivated is because our bodies just cannot cope with the amount of toxins we are subjected to on a daily basis through processed foods and pollution.

SAINSBURY’S is my port of call this week, partly because of their launch of some house wines and also as most of their wines tend to exude quality.

My first white wine selection was that of a Grande Réserve 2017 Bergerac Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, a wine not often seen in these parts.

THis aromatic, slightly off-dry white has lemony flavours with a touch of honeysuckle, a hint of nuttiness and is mellow with a flowery aftertaste - a good complement to fish and salmon in particular and seven readies will complete purchase thereof.

Next, I turned my attention to two bargain Sauvignon Blancs, one from Chile and the other a house wine from

the Western Cape of South Africa.

A 2018 (yes, 2018) Chilean Phantom River Sauvignon Blanc proved to be fruity with citrus and tropical fruits to the fore, a hint of lime and an impressive minerality reminiscent of French terroirs - at just £5 my undoubted bargain of the week!

THe house Sauvignon Blanc from the Western Cape is even cheaper, at £4.80, sporting lemon, lime and grapefruit flavours, if a tad watery compared to the Chilean example, but still perfectly acceptable party wine! For £8.50 expended, the 2016 Taste the Difference Greco di Tufo had a summer meadow nose, fragrant aromas and mineral complexity that comes from the region’s volcanic soils along with an abundance of exotic fruit flavours - a wine that would pair well with grilled tuna.

Four red wines then caught my eye with a £4.80 House Cabernet Sauvignon of Spanish provenance exuding blackcurrant, blueberry and vanilla flavours and proving to be eminently quaffable at this price, though lacking somewhat in complexity (as you might have expected!).

Santa Julia Reserve Malbec full-bodied red from the Uco Valley in Argentina and planted at elevations between 954 and 1,402m above sea level, a terroir that lends itself to concentration of aromas and flavours.

Plum, spice and vanilla flavours abound and this smooth Malbec is cracking value. For an outlay of £10, the 2016 Antonin Rodet Red Burgundy proved to be a Pinot Noir for the last vestige of summer - light, fruity and medium-bodied with classic fruity tastes of strawberries, raspberries and red cherries.

Equally on sale for £10 and my ultimate selection is a Gran Reserva 2009 Barón De Las Viñas Rioja which sports a lovely nose, has balanced acidity with a touch of spice, subtle pepper touches and hints of roasted coffee and ripe fruity oak with a hint of vanilla and a lingering finish pure joy!

Community News & Views FAMILIES in the Post area are being urged to talk during the current organ donation week.

New figures show 35 people in West Sussex have died waiting for a transplant in the past five years.

THe tragic statistic still shows an urgent need exists for more people to support donation even though more people are supporting donating their loved one's organs.

NHS Blood and Transplant is urging more people in the area to tell their families they want to save lives through organ donation.

Last year, 70 people in West Sussex were given a new lift by a transplant. If more people agreed to donate, more lives would be saved in the county.

THere are around 6,000 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant across the UK in spite of the number of donors increasing.

Organ Donation Week has seen the NHS urge families to talk about donation with the message - Words Save Lives.

Anthony Clarkson, the interim director of organ donation and transplantation for NHS Blood Transplant, said: "It's tragic that so many people from West Sussex have died waiting for a transplant. What is shocking is that many of those lives could have been saved had more families agreed to donate organs.

"People are dying every day because some families are not talking about donation. We need more families in West Sussex to say yes to organ donation so that more lives can be saved."

He added: "We all know that organ donation legislation will change to a deemed consent system in England and Scotland in future years.

"But the harsh fact is people are dying right now waiting for an organ and it will still be important for people to know your decision."

A POTENTIAL multi-million pound funding cut could hit charities for homeless people across Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Labour county councillor Michael Jones has warned the reduction of West Sussex County Council's supporting people funding could cause a surge in the number of rough sleepers.

His concern was triggered by a late change in the council's forward plan which says most of the ÂŁ6m fund is set to be cut.

If the fund is scrapped, the current housing support contracts with charities and housing associations will start to be ended from next April. Among those affected will be Bognor Housing Trust and Stonepillow, which works in Chichester and Bognor Regis.

Cllr Jones said the proposal by the Conservative-led council was callous and despicable. "Anyone who has seen first-hand the dedication of the staff at these organisations trying to help people in this terrible situation turn their lives around, and go forward with a roof over their heads, would not doubt for a second the benefit to the community they provide," he said.

"THe price it costs is relatively small as opposed to the costs that will undoubtedly emerge if they aren't there, particularly to the health service and the police. In the meantime, I fear these cuts will trigger an epidemic of homelessness."

County council leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith, pictured above, said consultation about the future funding of supported housing projects would begin this month.

"Supported housing projects help a number of vulnerable people including those who are homeless, rough sleepers and exoffenders," she said.

"We no longer have dedicated funding for housing support from central government and the services we provide are not statutory, unlike many others which are under pressure. We recognise that making savings in this area could lead to an increase in pressure on other services in the long run.

"We will work closely with our partners in the voluntary sector and other local authorities to find ways to keep the impact of any funding changes to a minimum."

INTREPID Chichester Probus members and their wives and partners sailed 'up the creek' to Emsworth for an evening's cruise.

THe 40-strong party enjoyed the journey on the sunpowered Solar Heritage with a little booze and some entertainment to enjoy as well as the views on a postheatwave mid-August day.

Sir, Regeneration of Bognor Regis relies in part by getting feet on the ground in the town centre on Saturdays - for all of the day.

Just look at the picture of Bognor's London Road in the window of Bonmarche on the corner of the High Street and London Road. THe town was seething with people! Shops did not close!

With reference to words from West Sussex County Council that a rise in charges for parking is related to inflation/operational costs and managing parking demand.

Managing parking demand? THe demand is that everyone should be able to be in Bognor on Saturday (all together) - not a restricted presence of people only able to park for one hour.

No wonder the town is dying and hotels are closing, which we need to keep. Where else are people to stay if they want to come to a place that could become the Last Resort?

Let us have completely free parking on a Saturday, except for controls on the roads around the railway station, with regard to the movement of buses. Maybe places can be found for a park and ride service.

When I was very young in the fifties, the town was full of people all day with families with their children. It was a social occasion. So, councillors put away your party hats and make every Saturday a party.

Councillors are not there to do what they think is best for Bognor. THey are there to do what the people want.

Let's not make Bognor THe Last Resort.

WORKING healthcare professionals will have a new centre in Chichester next month where they can develop their skills.

THe University of Chichester is to launch the centre for workforce development in October to act as a place for associated and applied research, knowledge transfer and continuing development activity.

Courses and learning sessions will be available to social work and healthcare professionals, pictured above, in and around West Sussex.

Chris Smethurst, the university's head of its department of childhood, social work and social care, said: "A knowledgeable and empowered workforce is key to the future success of the NHS, which is why we are launching our centre for workforce development.

"We have success, experience and scope for incentivising and researching key workforce development strategies.

"THis includes building resilience to bring about effective change via mentorship, coaching and action-learning within the context of the NHS and social care, mental health, child protection, early childhood, education and adult services."

THe centre will form part of the university's department of childhood, social work and social care. THis has a regional reputation for working in collaboration with nearby government authorities and partners in the further and higher education sectors.

It also hosts the university's postgraduate research facility for social policy and has links with Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Stroll around town to take step back in time A town centre walk will reveal many sites with links to the past I THOUGHT this week we could perhaps think of taking a stroll around the town, walk off some extra calories and take the chance to enjoy some of our town’s historical buildings.

For this stroll, we should start at the Place St Maur des Fosses. THis area was constructed following the re-development of York Road into the new Regis Centre, which was opened in 1980, alongside the flats of Mountbatten Court. It is difficult to believe that this area in the centre of our seafront was completed only 38 years ago.

From here, we should walk towards the town hall, passing, on our left, one of Arun District Council’s Blue Plaques. THis indicates the premises where Dante Gabriel Rosetti worked in 1875 in the stable of his home. THese premises were until recently the garages for a group of solicitors and have been converted into flats.

Our next major construction, of course, is that of the town hall, which was opened in 1929, after the closure of the council's building in the High Street. THis was one of a number of developments in the town, around the time that King George was here to recuperate.

It was felt that the town was in need of an imposing town hall. It is interesting to see the number of different stones that were incorporated into this building to act as a

memorial to the builder, architect and council representatives of the time.

Next, we continue inland, along Clarence Road, passing the Roman Catholic church that was opened in 1882 by a group of monks. THis massive construction would, at that time, have been very imposing in such a small seaside resort that was still only slowly developing. Previously, there had only been a small meeting area near West Street to accommodate the Catholics in the town. Turning left, we will stroll along the High Street, which contains a variety of buildings built at varying times in the town’s development.

First was one of the town’s post offices, which was opened in 1926, after having a variety of previous sites throughout the town centre. Walking further along the High Street, on the opposite side, we see the Lock Centre, and it is quite difficult to realise that this was originally the town's fire station built in 1899, as shown on the top façade of the building.

Next door we have the William Hardwicke, which was opened in 1810 as THe New Inn and was eventually changed to THe Sussex Inn. It was built to accommodate the coach and horses that would travel down from London and pass through the town on their way to Portsmouth.

THe name of William Hardwicke commemorates the name of the original builder of the New Inn. He is buried in South Bersted churchyard.

Opposite the William Hardwicke, we have a public house. Originally a private house constructed in 1870, over a number of years its front rooms were to become used as a restaurant. However, it was not until 1947 it was to be a public house known to many people as THe Orlando.

For a small number of years, it became THe Hogshead, before being renovated and renamed THe Beach House and, recently, it changed name again to Ocean’s and now it is THe Punch and Judy.

Further along, you see a shop with a number of original green glazed tiles that formed the outline of the public house, THe York Inn, which was built as a post house in the 1830s. Next, of course, we find the impressive Arcade, which was begun in 1901 by William Tate the local Bognor builder.

THis was just one of his constructions throughout the town. At one time, one of the shops in the Arcade was Timothy Whites, but as the town centre was developing, they were able to buy new premises opposite at a cost of £17,000. THis site is now the Santander Bank, but was originally the United Reform Church, who sold the church and site, as it was becoming quite noisy for parishioners to worship quietly.

On the corner, next to the Arcade, we have now Howards cafe, but this building has been home to a wide variety of businesses.

During the 1880s, York House occupied it, and the Arcade was built in the grounds of the house. THe businesses in the adjoining corner premises have included a bank, job centre, Burger King and now the T Bone Burger bar, a far cry from its original use as a private residence.

Across York Road, we have another impressive building. For years, E. Lawrence

Wood - who was a publisher of books and postcards - occupied this site. THis was also another post office as well as a general store and today is an estate agent.

If we look across the road, we can see a solicitors' shop, which was the site of Bognor Motors and originally a Wesleyan Chapel.

Further along we had the very popular Torbay Fisheries, where today we have William Hill.

Continuing along this side of the road we come to the car park for Morrisons but for many this will always hold memories of the Southdown bus depot, with its distinctive art deco frontage. However, until 1929, this site was occupied by the town hall until it moved to today’s site.

How many people can remember a restaurant in this vicinity which I think was very well used and much loved by Bognorians - that of the Polly Anne restaurant. Although there have been quite a number of restaurants and cafés in the town, it is usually the name of the Polly Anne that evokes the most memories.

Next to this was the imposing wall of the Merchant Taylors Convalescent Home, which was eventually demolished in the 1950s ready for the construction of the impressive Queensway and Fitzleet House. Well, this was the view in the 1960s when it was reported that the town was forward looking by building these two major developments.

THe corner building, on the opposite side of the road, which today contains several small shops, was for many years occupied

by Webster and Webb. THis site was also for a time one of our many post offices, but was originally known as a library and reading room.

Webster and Webb became renowned for producing a wide range of postcards and pictorial books on Bognor, which forms such a good basis of the information that I and other local historians use. Here also you can find Heygates Bookshop.

Country Centre Cafe Support Volunteer – Aldingbourne Trust The Aldingbourne Trust is dedicated to helping local businesses, communities and people with learning disabilities to reach their potential and enjoy life, together.

They are committed to the support and well-being of people with learning disabilities; developing their skills, helping them gain employment in the local community and encouraging them to lead more fulfilled, independent lives. At the Aldingbourne Country Centre, they run a very successful cafe/restaurant that clients and members of the public use; they provide hot meals, sandwiches, a lot of cakes and refreshments. They have a number of clients working in the kitchen who need support and guidance and they are looking for a volunteer who is patient and happy to guide and teach the clients to encourage them to increase their skills.

Business Adviser – Young Enterprise Arun and Chichester Young Enterprise need volunteers to act as Business Advisers to teams of students (aged 14 - 19) in local schools who will be running a real company for the next

There are classes in Seated Yoga, Gentle Exercise, Drama, Music, Drawing/Painting and Reminiscence. Boccia is a form of bowls which can be played by people with a physical/ learning disability. The role is to provide support to the

students where necessary, and also to help the tutor with paperwork. They are looking for someone who is willing to learn to communicate with people who may have limited verbal skills; to encourage people to take part in the group activity and also to assist the tutor with paperwork throughout the year as necessary.

Club Leader – 4Sight Vision Support 4Sight Vision Support is a charity supporting people with sight loss and a membership organisation, based in West Sussex. The Club Leader role is to organise/run a social club for visually impaired people with support from 4Sight head office. Tasks will include: organising transport for members via a team of volunteer drivers by liaising with both parties; delegating tasks to volunteer helpers such as refreshments and setting up the venue; organising games such as quizzes, bingo etc. and arranging for outside entertainers to visit the club; organising occasional outings like pub lunches or afternoon teas; keeping accounts regarding club entry fees and petty cash; ensuring the venue is secure and locked after the club and left the same way as was found and having regular contact with club members outside of the club’s running hours.

Heather and Dawling put on 252 as PostSport Middleton openers seal Ifield win MIDDLETON CC saved their best to last, producing a convincing display to round off their Sussex Premier season on a high.

THe Sea Lane side put Ifield to the sword and cruised to a 166-run victory over the already relegated side.

Skipper Sean Heather led the way, smashing 127 in a 252-run stand with fellow opener Jack Dawling (102).

By the time they had finished, Middleton had amassed a total of 316-4 from their 50 overs. In reply, Craig Fowle was the star taking 4 for 22 as Ifield were dismissed for 150.

It wrapped up an impressive win for Middleton, who have struggled to find consistency this season.

After finishing the campaign third bottom, Middleton will have plenty to work on over the winter to ensure that next season they are looking up rather than down in 2019.

In Division Two,, Bognor Regis finished the year on an upward trend by defeating bottomside Bexhill by four wickets at the Regis Oval.

After putting the visitors in to bat, an excellent all-round bowling dismissed them for just 120. Sam Adams (3-31) led the way with Josh Sargeant (2-22) and Andrew Greig

(2-7 from seven overs) lending support.

In reply, Bognor struggled to get going in pursuit of a relatively small target. Every batter got a start but was unable to push on.

Skipper Ryan Maskell (22) was the highest score as the home side reached the total with four wickets and more than 20 overs to spare.

THe win ensured Bognor leapfrogged Chichester Priory Park to finish sixth in what has been an extremely competitive division this season.

Chi completed their fixtures with a defeat against promotion-chasing St James's Montefiore at Goodwood.

Set 220 to win, Priory never looked like reaching their target as only Matthew Bennison (61) stood up to the visitors' bowlers.

Even a late rally from captain Matthew Geffen (26*) at number 11 was unable to lift Chi as they were bowled out for 138.

In Division THree West, Pagham wrapped up a top half finish with a narrow 16-run win at Stirlands CC. Half centuries from Jack Stannard (76) and Ryan Barratt (69) put them on their way to a score of 210-4 before the hosts were restricted to 194-9, as Justin Scott took 5 for 21.

DARTS: As the season nears its end, the Divisional Pairs knockouts of the Bognor Summer Darts league took place at the Newtown Social Club.

More than 70 players took part in the event and delivered some extremely competitive action in the process.

First up was the Division 3 competition which saw 12 pairs take to the oche.

After overcoming their team mates in the semi final, Newtown Clubbers duo Simon Mitchell & Tony Miles made it through to take on another couple of familiar faces in Graeme Dutton & Ian Kewin, pictured below, (also Newtown Clubbers).

After splitting the first legs, the decider saw a 135 from Dutton followed by a ton from Kewin. THis gave them the lead they needed, and with 58 left Dutton hit the double, taking the Division 3 Pairs Champions title for 2018.

In Division Two, the final pitched Andy Chant & Dave Bourne (Aldwick Legion) versus Adam Hall & Adam Judd, pictured below (Aldingbourne Mavericks).

THe Legion pair went first, but Judd replied hitting the only 180 of the night with his first throw. Scores of 140, 60 and 91 followed leaving just 30 left which Judd hit with his second dart to seal a 13 dart leg and 1-0 lead.

THe second leg saw a slower start from both sides, but Hall hit another 140 to take the massive lead. With 32, left Judd hit the double with his second dart to take the 2018 title.

In Division 1, 13 pairs took to the oche.

Last year's champions Gary Blackwood & Gary Bryant (THe Legends) could only make it into round one where they lost to Dave Owens & Colin Mace (Friary Z).

THe pair made it through to the final where they took on Mark Sheppard and Tony Phillips (Hunston Hares).

Youthful Chi chase first league victory

CHICHESTER RFC will be hoping a return to home comforts will pay dividends as they look to secure their first win of the season.

THe Blues kicked off their London South One campaign last weekend with a narrow 22-15 loss to recently-relegated Westcombe Park.

A losing bonus point seemed scant reward for a youthful Chi team who are in rebuilding mode after the retirement of key personnel following last season.

Scott Ashley's side will have chance to go one better tomorrow when they welcome Southampton-based Tottonians to Oaklands Park (3pm).

With the visitors losing their opener by just two points, the match will be a good test of Chi's credentials for the coming year.

THere were plenty of positives to take from the opening day trip to south east London.

With the retirement of Jack Bentall and Jack Arden-Brown, the side was captained by Charlie Wallace with Dane Gingell coming in

at hooker. Ben Polhill started his 22nd season in the 1st XV as blindside flanker.

After falling behind to an early penalty, Chichester reacted positively Following a line out, the ball was passed swiftly along the line and a powerful run from Ben Robson breached the opposition defence for a try.

But Blues were unable to build on their momentum and, just before the break, the home side rounded off a maul to take a 10-7 lead at half time.

Coombe came out after the break full of purpose and scored two further tries in the second period.

Chi increased the tempo looking for a way through the well organised defence. Despite conceding a number of penalties, Coombe held firm until a well worked move across the pitch put Alex Taylor in at the corner, for Blues' second five-pointer.

Try as they might, though, Chi were unable to find another score to level things up.

THe Hares pair got off to a quick start with Sheppard starting with 121 and a ton, followed by 85 from Phillips. Owens and Mace just caught up, but the first leg double was hit by Sheppard.

THe second leg saw Sheppard start with a ton, followed again by 85 from Phillips.

A 121 and 95 from Owens pulled them in closer, but Mace could only leave 20.

Owens and Mace then both missed the doubles on their next throws, giving Sheppard another go at double 2 which he hit with his second dart.

THe throw secured the leg and the match ensuring the pair, pictured below, took the Bognor Summer Darts Division 1 Pairs title for 2018.

Hawks are in Lions sights as Pagham hunt FA cup shock

Softball event big hit in Chi ORGANISERS of Chichester's first ever international senior softball tournament have vowed to do it all again after the initial staging proved to be a big hit.

THe co-ed fast-pitch tournament brought five teams from across Europe to take part in competition in Oaklands Park.

Dridma Rivas from Spain, Paris Patriots from France and a Great British Under 19 squad were among those to play in the Chichester Falconsorganised contest.

Featuring a round robin, a home run derby and two playoff rounds, there was plenty to keep the international cohort busy in what was a fun-filled weekend.

David Morris, manager of the Falcons, who organised the event, said: "We definitely want to do this again next year “With a longer day there is capacity for eight teams, so now that we’ve proven the event can work in Chichester, we hope to have more teams from Europe enter next year.”

As well as the international visitors, Wes Knapp brought a Meteors team from London, calling on the services of some Danish friends to fill his roster,

while Ian Tomlin fielded a young team of GB players, including Oliver Howley and Bronte Harvey from Chichester.

THese two teams dominated the round robin, with the Meteors winning all four matches to take the crown.

MVP prizes were awarded to Josh Peat (GB) and Aida Caballero (Dridma Rivas) while Carina THorsland (Meteors) and Mason Brockway (GB) took the home run derby prize.

Even though bad weather brought a halt to proceedings before the play-off rounds, all in all the contest was deemed a big success.

It was a first for the Falcons who have put on a junior fastpitch tournament for the last two years.

But after playing in a handful of co-ed tournaments in Paris lately, manager David Morris decided to switch to a senior age group for 2018.

He said: "I am very pleased that Martha Moya (Spain) and Will Notue (France) were able to bring their teams to the UK – they are wonderful guests to have in our city and added perfectly to the flavour of the event”.

PAGHAM have history-making in their sights as they hope to spring a FA Cup shock against a side two divisions higher than them in the non-league football pyramid.

THe Lions welcome Bostik Premier side Whitehawk to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) in the first qualifying round of the knockout competition.

Pagham, who are third in the SCFL Premier and are still unbeaten this campaign, have nothing to fear from the match.

Win and they would equal the club's best ever performance in the knockout competition.

With a trip to Broadbridge Heath in the league on Tuesday (7.45pm), it will be a busy couple of days for Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen's side.

Pagham head into the double header in good form after a comfortable 6-3 victory over East Preston in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup. Callum Overton, Scott Murfin, Ryan Davidson and a George Gaskin hat-trick sealed the win for the Lions.

THe club also used the occasion to mark goalkeeper James Binfield playing his 250th match for the club.

Derby day awaits unbeaten Chi CHICHESTER City Ladies will be looking to prove deja vu does exist by doing the double over local rivals Portsmouth.

Aaron Smith's side have made an impressive start to their new season, registering a 100 per cent record from their three matches so far.

THis included a rousing 4-2 league cup win over Pompey last weekend which saw Chi dominate from start to finish.

Goals from Helen Ogle, Jade Widdows and a second half double from player of the match Chloe Melton sealed the victory at Baffins Milton Rovers.

Chi do not have long to hold those local bragging rights - with the two teams meeting again, this time in the National South at Oaklands Park on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Before then, Smith's side make the trip to MK Dons Ladies on Sunday (2pm). With the hosts still without a win all year, Chi will be looking to seal all three points to ensure they go into the home derby with their confidence sky high.

Elsewhere, in men's football and SCFL Division One, Selsey will be looking to keep a five-match unbeaten record going as they

welcome Seaford Town to the Bunn Leisure Community Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

THe Blues came through a tough FA Vase preliminary tie with Mile Oak this past week, needing a replay to see off their league rivals in midweek.

Safe passage was eventually secured by goals from Dan Bassil, Ryan Morey and Tom Jefkins in the 3-0 win.

Fellow SCFL Division One side Sidlesham are starting to find their feet under new boss Steve Bailey.

THe Sids beat Surrey side Bagshot 5-0 in the Vase last weekend, thanks to strikes from Morgan Forry (2), Robert Madden, Ben Mepham and Frazer Smith.

Next up is a home league match against Southwick tomorrow (3pm).

In SCFL Division Two Bosham are still seeking their first victory in spite of the new caretaker managers, Tony Hancock and Danny Mullen. THey have taken over from Dennis Hughes after the former Brighton & Hove Albion player told the club last week he wanted to leave just a couple of months after joining.

THe Robins are third bottom of the league without a point from their first four matches.

THe latest saw them defeated 3-2 at home to Worthing Town, Alex Barnes and Ben Bishop getting the goals. Bosham travel to bottom side Ferring tomorrow (3pm) with the hosts suffering a negative goal difference of 28.

Table-topping City look to extend run CHICHESTER City are well rested and still flying high as they return from a week off leading the way in the SCFL Premier.

Miles Rutherford's side have been in sparkling form at the start of the new campaign winning four of their opening five matches to leave them one point clear of nearest rivals Horsham YMCA. Key to their unbeaten league start has been a ruthless streak in front of goal with the side netting an average of three goals per game.

After a week off, because of receiving a bye in the FA Vase, Chi will be looking to pick up where they left off.

Next up for City are two home matches in the space of four days. First up is a visit from Peacehaven & Telscombe tomorrow (3pm)

before bottom side Loxwood make the trip to Oaklands Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).

On paper, the two matches should deliver maximum points for Rutherford's side.

But, when finishing third last season, these were the types of matches where Chi came up short and dropped crucial points.

Peacehaven, in particular, have proved to be tough nuts for City to crack in recent years - with Rutherford's side taking three points from six from them last year.

But, with City in red hot form and ten of their players finding their way on to the scoresheet so far this campaign, the expectation from the Oaklands faithful is that their side will gain six points from six and preserve their place at the top of the table.

Free-scoring Rocks must cut out mistakes as FA cup looms Next Game

WHITSTABLE (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is calling on his players to cut out the defensive mistakes as they start out on the road to Wembley.

After a good start to life back in the Bostik Premier, the Rocks' attention switches to the FA Cup. THe first qualifying round of the competition has pitched Bognor against Bostik South East side Whitstable Town.

With £6,000 gifted to their winners, it could be a profitable trip to the Kentish coast tomorrow (3pm) for the Nyewood Lane side.

But Pearce has warned that his youthful side need to keep working on the defensive side of the game.

THe lack of concentration leading to silly errors was evident again as the Rocks defeated Kingstonian 3-1 in the league last time out.

THat win keeps the Rocks unbeaten with three wins and three draws from their opening half dozen matches.

Pearce said: "I was pleased with the result and pleased with all the efforts but we are still making defensive mistakes.

"It was from one of those that they scored and it is something we have to work on.

"THese things happen when you are putting a side together and when the players are young."

THe win against Kingstonian was sealed by two goals from the in-form Dan Smith and a Bradley Lethbridge strike.

It takes Bognor's goal tally for the season to 15, making them the joint top scorers in the league. But the veteran boss said there was still plenty to work on, especially in their own half. Pearce said: "THe reason the lads are playing at this level is they have weaknesses but also have strengths.

"THe name of the game is putting a squad together that can play to our strengths while covering our weaknesses.

"At the moment, we are not covering our weaknesses as well as we can."

THere will be plenty of scope for Bognor to improve when they head to the Kent coast.

After being promoted from the Southern Counties East division last term, THe Oysterboys have struggled at step four.

But they registered their first win of the season when they beat early pacesetters Ashford Town 1-0 at home last weekend.

THat result leaves them mid-table - 33 places below Bognor in the non-league pyramid.

Pearce said: "I don't know much about them but all cup games are difficult.

"While we play at a higher standard, they are at home and they beat a team that was top of the table 1-0 last time out.

"But, if we play to our full potential, then we will create lots of chances. It's just whether we can take them on the day."

Corey Heath is set to miss the trip but Keaton Wood could make a return.

Six grand reasons for cup run IT'S NOT been a competition that the Rocks have fared too well in recent years.

Aside from last season's run to the verge of the first round proper, it's been a few years since Jack Pearce's side have caused any major FA Cup shocks of their own.

But there will be a few thousand extra reasons for Bognor to try and progress in the world's oldest knockout competition this year.

With the doubling of the prize money by the FA, victory tomorrow away at Bostik South East side Whitstable Town in the first qualifying round could deliver a £6,000 windfall to the Nyewood Lane side.

Progression to the same stage as last season - when Bognor were defeated by fellow National South strugglers Oxford City - will inject £30,000 into the club's coffers.

For a club that does not have a major benefactor, such a sum would be a welcome boost, Pearce said: "We have not done brilliantly in it. It is always difficult and the games thrown up are never easy.

"It would be nice to have a run, especially given the doubling of the prize money.

"THat's always encouraging and all we can do is see where we can go with it."

OUR UNBEATEN run continues!

Six games into this Bostik Premier League season and we have three wins and three draws. Sitting nicely in the top five of the division, the goals are flying in for Bognor and this is fantastic to see.

My main worry at the moment, though, is injuries.

With Keaton Wood still not 100 per cent and Corey Heath having to play when not match fit, we are looking slightly vulnerable at the back.

But, luckily, with the likes of Chad Field and Tommy Block, falling back alongside them at the back, we have managed to hold teams to draws instead of losing games.

THe difference this year is that we have the fire power to set fear into other teams.

Dan Smith, who celebrated his birthday this past Wednesday, turning just 19, has been a revelation and Bradley Lethbridge has also made a great difference to the side.

Allowing Jimmy Muitt more freedom on the right hand side and other players to defend in numbers, we have been great in the counter attack as well.

Bringing in Archie Edwards has proved a good move with him playing at full back.

We can now release the likes of Harvey Whyte and Calvin Davies further forward up the field.

From an attacking point of view, I am happy and I just hope we can continue this momentum for as long as possible!

THe away trip to AFC Hornchurch was great and after coming home with a point (slowly, mind you, with that coach) I think everyone was happy with that.

We conceded a fairly poor goal straight from a corner which saw us share the points.

We almost couldn’t get the Rocks Radio to work as the club appeared to have no power supply around the

ground before kick off.

Eventually, Lee Roberts and I found the officials' stand at the Hornchurch Stadium - and with power!

THe Urchins are a decent football team but I am afraid the facilities are looking very tired and require some much needed TLC in my opinion.

But that’s non-league football grounds for you.

It was quite nice to visit the Dripping Pan again. Over the years, I have seen a fair share of wins, draws and losses against the Rooks.

It was end to end football and in front of nearly 900 fans, we experienced a great atmosphere.

It was awesome to see so many Rocks fans there to cheer on the lads. You can watch back Lethbridge’s wonder strike at Lewes on YouTube and I think he has cemented his place in that team following that performance.

I still think the likes of Mason Walsh and Harvey Sparks offer great competition in that same position though.

THe 3-3 score was a fair result in the end and a great game for the neutral - of course it would have been nice to win there but we can’t win them all.

Rocks bounced back to winning at home as we welcomed Kingstonian to Nyewood Lane.

We fully deserved the win and again looked deadly on the counter. THe K’s fans were clearly unhappy after the final whistle and a contingent made their feelings known directly to their manager as he exited the field.

Another three points at home!

Is Nyewood Lane becoming a fortress again? Or have I spoken too soon and jinxed it? (Sorry Rob).

THe FA Cup is back tomorrow as we travel to Whitstable Town. We can’t underestimate this side but it would be nice to get a bit of a run in this competition. I will see you all in Kent! Up THe Rocks!
