Man jailed after abuse behaviour A PAGHAM man has been jailed for 21 months for subjecting his former partner to abusive behaviour.

Lawrence Hendry, 31, a cleaner, of Pagham Road, was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court last week.

He had pleaded guilty last month to one count of coercive and controlling behaviour and two counts of assault by beating.

He was also given a ten year restraining order which bans him from any contact with the victim. Breaching it could result in a further sentence of up to five years.

In sentencing Hendry, Judge Tim Mousley said: "It became obvious within a relatively short time that the victim was never going to have from you the benefit of trust and security that normally exists in an intimate relationship.

"Instead, she became the victim of your abuse, and what you did to her was all designed to make her feel subordinate and isolated.

"It bore all the hallmarks of cowardly bullying that so often exists in cases of this nature. You tried whatever you could to control her to break her down and it continued for a long time.

"You have, I'm quite satisfied, an untrusting nature which has been exacerbated by your use of alcohol and cocaine and the combination of them.

"Your abuse to the victim took many forms, both physical and mental."

Sussex Police investigator Dawn Hosken said officers became involved in September last year when a passer-by

heard screams coming from a house in Pagham Road and saw a man dragging a woman into the house by her neck.

Officers went to the address and spoke to Hendry and his ex-partner. Both denied anything had happened.

But, a few days later, the 30-year-old woman contacted police and explained the behaviour she had endured.

"Over the previous 12 months, Hendry had become very jealous and controlling towards her, going so far as to install a covert camera in her flat to watch her remotely, taking her phone away from her to check its contents and regularly attacking her by punching and kicking her," the investigator told the court.

Her ordeal culminated on a night in September when Henry again kicked and slapped her up to 50-60 times, resulting in bruises to her legs and back.

"On December 30 last year, the victim called the police, while Hendry was already under investigation but not yet charged, but she rang off before the police call handler could answer.

"On the police immediately ringing back, the victim reported that Hendry had beaten her yet again, becoming very violent and switching the wi-fi off so she could not send messages through on her mobile," she said.

"He had also on a previous occasion thrown a mobile phone at her and become verbally abusive."

Police said the prosecution showed how the force took effective action against domestic abuse.

Outline plans have been submitted to demolish The Richmond Arms and build ten flats in its place.

Alex Burrows has asked Arun District Council to agree to the principle of the 3.5 storey high development at the London Road site.

A statement with the application, by Coverpoint Properties, says: "The site is located within an existing residential area, meaning the proposals would not be out of context and would not have any detrimental impact on neighbouring properties or surrounding land uses.

"The provision of one bedroom properties provides the opportunity for those wishing to enter the property ladder to purchase their first home in a sustainable location in close proximity to local services, employment opportunities and public transport connections."

The company states the area has a lack of housing land supply.

"The local planning authority should be looking to approve sustainable development proposals within settlement boundaries without delay in order to meet the housing shortfall," it adds.

Music festival is hit with record crowds

Some 800 festival-goers gathered in the blazing sunshine at the Hft Sussex Orchards for two days of live entertainment and music at CoreFest.

The sell-out crowd included people with learning disabilities, their families and carers together with hundreds of other people from the community.

The line-up included a range of highly popular bands to appeal to all tastes, from Michael Jackson and Kylie tribute acts to local favourites Murdoch's Crazy Eyes, Iron Tyger and Delta 7.

Other entertainment included magic shows, circus skills workshops, aerial acrobatics, bouncy castles and animals from RepTylers Mobile Zoo. One of those who attended was Brighton

resident Hilary Harris.

She said: "It has been the best weekend.

It's been brilliant to see people of all ages and abilities enjoying themselves together in the sunshine. We'll definitely be back next year."

Last weekend's festival was the third to be held amid the apple and pear trees at the Eastergate Lane site at the foot of the South Downs.

Special provisions for people with learning disabilities included an accessible campsite, fully accessible facilities and access to designated chillout areas away from the main crowds.

It helped to raise more than £5,500 to support the work of Hft Sussex.

The charity helps around 100 people in the area by offering services centred around them and which range from residential care to supported living at

home - from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day.

Hfts's division fundraising manager, Jodi Harford, said: "CoreFest is really important to Hft Sussex, not just because it helps us raise valuable funds and awareness for the charity but because so few festivals like this exist. We feel strongly people with learning disabilities should be able to enjoy live music and the festival experience alongside everyone else.

"CoreFest enables them to do just that.

Thanks who everyone who came along this year - we look forward to seeing you again in 2019.

Next public event on the agenda for Hft Sussex is the return of the popular We're Going on a Bear Hunt family fundraiser on September 8 and 9 at Eastergate Lane.

CHILDREN who lived in planned homes in Climping would have to walk to and from school in the road.

Planning expert Sarah Pharoah told a public inquiry in Littlehampton this week the proposed development of up to 300 dwellings gave rise to serious concerns about pedestrian safety.

In evidence submitted to the inquiry, which opened on Tuesday, she said outline plans by Mulgrave Properties for the site on land west of Church Lane were refused by Arun District Council because of road safety concerns at two junctions on the nearby A259.

“In consultation with the council and county highways authority, the developer has promoted improvements to the roundabout junction between Church Lane and the A259,” she said.

“These improvements will significantly overcome highway capacity issues at this junction, although our consultant considers the absence of suitable pedestrian crossing facilities at the new junction to be particularly surprising particularly given the presence of a primary school nearby, which would be the nearest school to the development.

“He also remains concerned about the lack of pedestrian footways linking the primary school to the appeal site and hence the need for children to walk alone along the carriageway of the road.”

For the other junction, between the

B2233 Yapton Road and the A259, known as The Oystercatcher junction, the developer and county highways agreed improvements were needed, said Ms Pharoah. The developer had offered land which it said equalled 24 per cent of the cost of an upgrade.

But she said this still left the remaining 76 per cent of the funding to be agreed. Without that money, the junction would remain the same.

The inquiry, chaired by planning inspector Matthew Nunn, is due to take place over four days after Mulgrave Properties appealed against Arun’s refusal of its proposals last August.

For Mulgrave Properties, highways consultant Graham Bellamy said it would spend £1.2m on the Church Lane roundabout.

“Given the concerns regarding pedestrian accessibility to the school, the absence of a footway along that narrow lane is a concern.

"I have looked in detail at this and produced a scheme which provides a narrow footway along the western side of Crookthorn Lane down to its junction with Brookpit Lane where the public byway connects to the school,” he said.

This would provide a shared footway link between the housing site and the school with a new signalised pedestrian crossing over the A259 and the proposed footway along the southern verge of the A259 between the crossing and Crookthorn Lane.

` 'Stabbing' appeal DETECTIVES have appealed for help after a man was believed to have been stabbed in Bognor Regis town centre.

The 46-year-old man was taken to hospital suffering a wound to his abdomen.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where on Monday he remained in a stable condition. His injuries, which included a laceration to his face, are not life-threatening.

Detective Sergeant Alan Fenn said: "At this time, we have not been able to speak to the victim and we are trying to establish the circumstances of how and where he came to sustain his injuries.

"We believe that this may have happened between 9pm and 10pm.

"I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a fight or altercation in the area around this time."

Police were called around 10.45pm on Sunday by paramedics who had been called to a property in Belmont Street. The wounded man had gone there around 10pm but it is not known where he sustained the injury.

Strict rules on £80m scheme AN AMBITIOUS £80m scheme to regenerate Bognor Regis has been backed - with strict conditions.

Planning inspector Louise Gibbons has approved the Sir Richard Hotham Project's intentions for a seafront shopping, studio and leisure complex on six storeys, with a 1,100 seat town centre theatre and hotel.

But she has imposed 57 conditions, many of them with several clauses, to control how the major development is managed.

These include the need to provide a temporary community facility for the Arun Arts charity to replace its Alexandra Theatre before it is demolished for the new development and controls on how the construction of the new buildings is managed to lessen the work's impact.

Ms Gibbons says the proposed seafront uses, which also include a 64-bed hotel and 192 apartments, were acceptable.

She says: "The building would be significant in terms of mass in comparision to the existing buildings and structures on the site.

"However, this would not be to such an extent that it would look out of place along the seafront.

"It would reflect the historic development of the site which was formerly occupied by a theatre and terrace development."

For the proposed theatre on the Hothamton car park, off Queensway, she said: "The very central location of the theatre would add significantly to the vibrancy of the area and would not have an adverse effect on the retail units

nearby. Overall, this part of the scheme would provide a landmark building which would respect and enhance the local distinctiveness of the area."

She also praised the inclusion of two shops along the development's frontage with Queensway. A multi-storey car park would enable the amount of public parking to increase by 20 per cent.

Ms Gibbons' approval also included the proposal for a restaurant to replace the seafront skate park, the move of the skatepark to the promenade west of the pier and three kiosks on the seafront.

Her decision, which followed an informal public hearing last February 20, overturned two rejections of planning approval by Arun District Council.

The latest decision a year earlier centred on lack of parking and poor design.

Arun owns both proposed development sites and a council spokeswoman said it was taking expert advice before it would decided its next steps.

"The council has received the inspector's decision letter and is currently considering the conclusions drawn," she said.

"The council wants to understand the situation thoroughly and be clear of any resulting implications and is therefore taking appropriate legal advice.

"The council will not be commenting any further on the matter until after this legal advice has been received."

In a separate decision, Ms Gibbons has ordered Arun to pay the appeal costs of the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

College cooks up warm welcome to ensure new pupils feel at home A WARM welcome was on the menu for new students at Felpham Community College.

The Year 6 students who will be joining the college this September have spent a day familiarising themselves with its buildings, staff and students.

They took part in various activities which included cooking, enjoying the library and learning about the college's Rights Respecting Schools work.

The younger children were supported by college peer mentors throughout their visit to answer questions about what to expect.

associate headteacher, said: "It was a fantastic day for all involved.

"It was delightful to meet our September cohort who were really looking forward to their formal transition day last Wednesday and getting to grips with how our school works. It was nice to watch everyone making friends and getting used to the school site. Our Year 8 students who supported them were brilliant and a credit to Felpham."

One of the pupils who attended said: "I am quite nervous about coming to Felpham in September and today really helped as we got to go round the school and work out where everything is."

College students ‘glam it up’ in style for 2018 Prom Bourne Community College students celebrated the end of their final year in fine style, with their Year 11 Prom.

All looked incredibly glamerous in their dresses and suits.

The evening took place at The Langstone Hotel on Hayling Island on Wednesday, 4th July 2018. Students were able to relax and reflect on their achievements during their time at the College.

Protest over homes verdict

ANGRY councillors have spoken out about the prospect of 2,500 more homes in North Bersted.

Some of the elected representatives for the area said they despaired for its future after a government inspector backed Arun District Council's local plan proposal to earmark fields north of Chalcraft Lane for the housing with conditions.

Tuesday's meeting of Bersted Parish Council was the first since the decision was announced last week, as reported.

Cllr Francis Oppler, one of the county councillors for Bersted, said: “It is deeply depressing. It’s almost inevitable now that the majority group on Arun will adopt the local plan next Wednesday.

“But, however, even if that does transpire we have got to keep on fighting. We can’t give up because the whole idea of the new housing is madness.

“We have to do our best to get our best possible deal. We should do everything possible to gum up the works.

Cllr Martin Lury, a member of Bersted Parish Council, said: “The houses will not be for local people because they will be too expensive.

“All we are doing is allowing people to come down from Croydon, Horsham or London – but we don’t have the services for them here.”

council’s planning, amenities and environment committee, said she had been told by a developer it would seek even more housing on land alongside the allocated site in the local plan.

Chalcraft Lane resident the Rev Frank Jones is among those showing their support for the housing protests.

He said work for previous planning proposals had shown a lot of clay existed beneath the surface along with a high water table. “If you are going to put concrete on that, you are going to have

problems with drainage," he said.

"I remember with the previous housing application for Chalcraft Lane they were talking about using Pagham Rife for drainage but that is a long way from here.

“There is also the matter of the poor roads around here. They are not suitable to cope with more development. It’s ridiculous to think they are.

"If there are cyclists, motorists can’t get round them most of the time and queues of traffic build up and it is the same with the slower tractors.”

Group's fight goes on HOUSING campaigners in Pagham have vowed to keep on fighting.

The committee members of Pagham and Aldwick Greenfield Movement (PAGAM) said they were committed to continuing their two-year campaign against the three major housing sites in the area.

They had joined with the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England to decide their next steps.

The Pagham North, Pagham South and Sefter Road locations for 1,200 homes were backed last week with conditions by a planning inspector, as reported.

PAGAM chairman Alan Privett said: "However, PAGAM do not accept that the fight is over. In fact, the main concentration of our attention is making sure we can resist the developers in their attempt to concrete over our fields and disfigure our village."

But he urged the thousands of residents who had

supported the fight so far to keep up their opposition.

"Do not be apathetic but be postive as Pagham has got this far and we are so close to hitting the 3,000 letters of objection milestone. We need just 180 objections and we have until at least September 12 to make our presence felt."

Mr Privett said he was staggered to learn the cost to Arun District Council of preparing its local plan land use blueprint, which contains the housing allocations, was £,082,321 to mid-May. "Residents should bhe extremely angry over how much money, our money, has been spent on this dinosaur," he said.

He said he also feared that, if all the housing went ahead, Pagham Harbour could lose its status as an international wetlands site because of housing's impact.

“The raw materials will be brought in in large vehicles and taken out in smaller ones and I think there will be a reduction in the number of vehicles overall,” he said.

“It is finely balanced but on balance it seems sensible to have a plant located centrally to where most of the development we have earmarked in our local plan is going to be taken forward.”

Cllr Stephen Haymes (C, Yapton) said: “I’m not happy with the traffic movements but I can’t argue with the county highways officers and, if they are not supportive (of us), we have got no case to answer.

“I may not be happy with this but I can’t find a reason to reject it.”

Cllr Colin Humphris, Climping Parish Council’s chairman, said he believed the application failed to consider the impact of HGVs on The Oystercatcher junction.

"I know this is something members of this committee are concerned about," he said.

But Alison Crooks, the planning agent for Kendalls, said the plant would reduce the amount of cement being brought in from Chichester and Shoreham for the large-scale housing developments around the Arun district.

The plant’s mixing of aggregates, sand, cement and water would be carried out in enclosed pipes and vehicles. “This creates employment, there is no objection to its traffic, noise or dust and the proposal meets the objectives of sustainable development,” she added.

Survey agreed for town hall ARCHITECTS have been asked to draw up plans for the future use of the civic heart of Bognor Regis.

An architectural firm is to be taken on by the town council to advise on the possible future of the town hall.

They decided on Monday to spend £3,600 – the lower of two quotes received – on the expert opinion.

Cllr Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) said: “We should go ahead with this lower quote so we can get some idea of the use of the building, including using the town hall for civic purposes.

“This is something we would want to take on board in the near future.”

But Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said the town council should not be spending the money.

“This is our town hall and Arun District Council (which owns the building) should gift this building to us.

“One day, when Arun has gone, this will be the centre of our population and we need our town hall to stay with us.”

The town hall, in Clarence Road, has been owned by Arun since the council was formed in 1974, having been built in 1929 by the former Bognor Regis Urban District Council.

Arun uses some of the offices and leases most of the first floor to the town council, which also hires the council chamber for meetings.

The main, Grade II-listed building, is flanked on both sides by single-storey extensions.

Information supplied by the town council to the architects says: “Arun have undertaken a review which will

likely mean the building being offered for sale, with vacant possession. The building is listed as a community asset.

“The town council have expressed a provisional interest in purchasing the town hall, which they consider an important community asset for the town.

“However, for such a purchase to make business sense, they need to find alternative uses for the majority of the ground and second floors of the building, which will either provide income to help offset running costs and/or facilitate the council providing additional services/community benefit.”

The latest decision has come after town councillors decided in April against making an immediate offer to Arun to buy the main building. But they wanted to seek the opinion of architects to find out its potential and the costs involved in making any necessary changes to accommodate the uses.

Initial advice from the town council’s commercial agent sees the town hall’s ground floor as a community and event space based on an extended main office, smaller rooms and other office accommodation for minor tenants.

The first floor would remain the town council’s offices and the council chamber and the second floor would become self-contained apartments.

The town hall's extensions have been excluded by ADC from any purchase by the town council if it decides to go ahead. As reported, the town council is also seeking talks with the owner of the former Royal Hotel on the seafront.

Housing proposal put on hold at the last minute after report PROPOSALS for dozens of homes in Aldingbourne have been delayed.

Arun District Council's members were due to discuss the plans for 55 dwellings at Wings Nursery on Wednesday. Their planning officers had recommended the scheme at the Lidsey Road site for approval. But they were told the application by Mr Keet had been withdrawn from the agenda.

Planning officer Dan Vick said proposals for housing had to be judged differently after the inspector's report into the council's local plan was received last week.

The site was outside the area in which

development was expected but Arun's previous housing land supply shortage had meant the homes were needed to help to overcome that shortfall. That appeared to be no longer the case.

He said: "We have received the inspector's report into our local plan.

That report has significantly changed our position as regards to the housing land supply. When the agenda was prepared, we had two years' supply.

"The inspector's report suggests we have more than five years, which is in excess of what we need. The recommendation was based on the fact we had less than we needed."

Since retiring, he has continued to devote his time to the community through his chairmanship of the local tennis club, as well as being involved in promoting cycling in the area.

This helped the Rotary club plan its cycle rides for its prostate cancer and ending polio campaigns.

Dr Ridley is also the club's musical director and has played a leading role in improving its Christmas concert.

A WELL-KNOWN former doctor in Aldwick has been recognised as a leading member of a worldwide movement.

Dr Malcolm Ridley has been awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship to reflect his involvement in Bognor Regis Rotary Club.

The fellowship is one of the highest honours Rotary can bestow upon a person. Dr Ridley was presented with his fellowship by club president David Cousins.

In his citation, Mr Cousins said Dr Ridley had added greatly to the positive impact of the club.

"Malcolm's role as chairman of the community service committee over the years has enabled us to understand some complex requests for help, particularly where these have had medical backgrounds," he said. "His willingness to look deeply into these approaches ensures that we are able to make fully informed decisions ensuring that our support is given where it matters most.

Special guest Evie helps to open fete

` Felpham's fete FUN IN the sun in Felpham will be on offer this weekend.

The annual fete by the Felpham Village Conservation Society is taking place from mid-day-5pm on Saturday in Old Rectory Gardens.

Traditional games, stalls, food and drink and wonderful music will be on offer.

There will be chance to dance the afternoon away to music from likes of The Rock Choir, Funk Junction, Bamboo Calypso Band and Heather'n'Dave.

Glenn Powell, the society's chairman, said: "This will be the fete's fourth great year. It brings the whole community together.

"The day has again been supported by over 50 local businesses giving amazing raffle or tombola prizes, sponsoring an activity or supporting with helpers and games."

THERAPY dog Evie and her handler were the special guests at a Bognor Regis care home's summer party.

The fox red labrador and Alexandra Hughes went along to Abotts Lawn to join in the fun of the 60s-style event.

Evie and Alexandra joined Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, in opening the occasion on Saturday in front of residents' families and friends.

Alexandra said: "Evie was invited because she came runner-up in the nation last year out of 6,000 Pets As Therapy dogs in the UK. "She showed the mayor and people at the event her trophy and awards.

"All the residents liked stroking Evie. She made them smile.

"Evie was presented with treats and made everyone laugh by delving in her box of treats and getting some out and rolling on them."

Some of the residents and staff at the home, in Sylvan Way, dressed in sixties clothes to add to a colourful afternoon. The fete raised £132 for residents.

Pets As Therapy animals and their handlers visit homes, hospitals and hospices around the country to bring joy, comfort and companionship to patients and residents.

The group of pupils took part in a crime scene-themed workshop with activities such as finger printing, hair follicle and soil analysis and blood spatter analysis.

Joe Baldwin, one of the students who took part, said: "The blood spatter analysis was really interesting.

"We looked at how you can determine how an accident or murder happens by the positioning of the blood.

"The soil analysis was also really good as we could match up different soils to different places.

Hundreds turn out for special day to mark town school's anniversary A GOLDEN legacy of learning has been celebrated at a thriving Bognor Regis school.

Some 500 pupils, parents and staff members joined in the giant 50th birthday party at Edward Bryant School.

They enjoyed two hours of outdoor fun such as gym and athletic displays, short concerts and games like putting, tin can alley and hoopla.

Among those present on Friday evening was former pupil Patrick Ferrett, 41, and his twin daughters, nine-year-old Georgia and Rebecca Ferrett.

Mr Ferrett attended the London Road school between 1981 and 1988. He said: “The school has changed on the outside but it still has the same values as when I came here.

“It brings out character rather than institutionalising people. It spots talent and brings it to the fore.”

He fondly recalled his headteacher, Mervyn Batty, who he still sees around the town, and his tales of his former job as an RAF test pilot in Meteor jets trying to break the sound barrier.

“The stories he used to inspire us have stayed with me and I tell them to my daughters,” he said.

Mr Ferrett’s mother was a cleaner and kitchen worker at the school while he was a pupil.

Rebecca and Georgia were in the gym team showing their skills to the watching parents. Rebecca said: “I like coming to this school because so many members of my family have been here. It has changed a lot from the stories my dad tells us.”

A further family link is maintained by

Miles Simons, nine, whose uncle, Gary Simons, was a forward in the school’s first football team in the 1968/69 season.

“This is a really fun environment,” said Miles. “The school is just amazing.

Everyone is so calm and nobody ever really gets told off. The teachers are really nice and it’s all good.”

Fellow pupil Ava Carroll-Smith, eight, said: “I enjoy coming to school to play with my friends and the teachers make it fun.”

The school has grown from its original 240 pupils at the site to 600 and will reach 630 this September to confirm its status as one of the largest in the Bognor Regis area.

Headteacher Richard Waddington is only the school’s fourth leader since 1968. He has been in the role for four years and said that continuity had played a large role in its continued success.

“That is extraordinary consistency and it’s always helpful to have that for the community. I came to the school as a newly qualified teacher in 2000 and have stayed here ever since, apart from two years as an acting headteacher in Chichester.

“What we have at this school is a lot of fun and that means the children enjoy to learn. Our aim is to make a school where everybody enjoys learning,” he said.

“I get the impression from the parents who used to come here that this has always been a nice place to be.”

His predecessor, Cathy Williams,

said: “This has always been a really special school. It’s had a really magical combination where the teachers enjoy being here and that means the children want to be here as well.”

Mrs Williams arrived at the school in 1990 and left in 2015, after a short period working with Mr Waddington.

“We have always had a sense of fun but with a real drive at the same time for the children to do their best. We want high standards but we also want a giggle as well,” she said.

Mrs Williams is now the director for teaching and learning at the Schoolsworks Academy Trust of which the school is one of seven members.

The headteacher when the school building was officially opened on July 19, 1968, was Wilf Archer. The ceremony was carried out by Mr Bryant’s widow, Winifred Bryant, on the fifth anniversary of his death and joined by their daughter, Peggy Bryant.

Mr Bryant had been a prominent councillor in Bognor Regis for decades. When he died, fellow local county councillor, Reginald Martin, said a school in his name would be a fitting tribute.

The school dates from 1873 in Lyon Street and changed its name in 1964 before the move to its current site.

Two reminders remain of Lyon Street School. The most prominent is the emblem of a lion as the school badge and the second is its large bell, which is on display for the anniversary.

` Travellers action A CLEAN-UP is underway in North Bersted after travellers moved from a local nature reserve.

Arun District Council has begun to tidy up the site at Bersted Brooks off Rowan Way. The travellers arrived earlier this week.

A council spokesman said yesterday: "The travellers are currently believed to be on highway land adjacent to Newlands Road just off the Shripney roundabout near the viaduct.

"West Sussex County Council are aware and are undertaking proceedings to gain possession of the land.”

` Vehicles raided TWO VEHICLES in a Walberton street were raided on the same night.

Loose change was stolen from one of the vehicles parked in The Meadows overnight on June 27.

An untidy search was made of the other vehicle but nothing was reported to have been stolen.

The number plates were stolen on July 5 from a vehicle parked in Barnham Road in Eastergate.

Sussex Police announced on Tuesday they had arrested Simeon Harry, 30, and would be interviewing him for their inquiries.

Walkers greeted by author RENOWNED author Bill Bryson joined the walkers he had inspired as they crossed their Bognor Regis finishing line.

Three of the some 70 trekkers on the final stage of the Bryson Line had completed the entire 569-mile route.

That ended outside Bognor Regis Pier at 2.15pm on Sunday. Mr Bryson said: “When I devised the line, I didn’t think that anyone would walk it.

“It’s a completely crazy thing to do but I am glad they have done it. The reason I am here is because the walk is in aid of some really worthwhile causes.”

On their final day, the walkers’ sponsorship touched £122,000 for five charities against their £100,000 target.

Mr Bryson devised the Bryson Line for his 2015 book The Road To Little Dribbling in which he realised the longest route across Britain without crossing water stretches from Cape Wrath to Bognor Regis.

His book made some telling points about the town but he said his experience on Sunday left him feeling more positive about it.

“It’s so much better with a bit of sunshine. It makes the world of difference to any place and today has given me the chance to see beyond the prom, which I didn’t before. Getting a warm reception as we have done today makes a large difference as well.”

The trio who walked all the way were Alex Eichhorn, Kate Hedges and Roger Saller. Mr Eichhorn said: “It’s a relief to finish but the walk achieved everything we thought it would.

“Although it was a tough challenge, we got see the complete length of the UK and its paths and ways.

“The last ten days have been hard

because we have been walking through a heatwave but we have managed it with only a few blisters.”

Town mayor Cllr Stephen Reynolds and Jane Smith, the town crier, provided a civic greeting at the pier.

Planning for the walk was begun last August by the sponsor, Tanager Wealth Management. Those involved are linked to the company. They started on June 9 in Cape Wrath.

One of its partners, Jeff Hedges, said: “The Bryson Line is impossible to walk but we were lucky to have a guy who put together a route that could be walked by picking some of the iconic routes of England and Scotland.”

These included the West Highland Way and the Thames Path. The final day’s walk started in Arundel and followed the Arun Valley to Climping and west along the coast. Between three and 20 walkers completed each of the previous sections.

The charities backed were the Campaign to Protect Rural England, Bloodwise, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals and Papworth Hospital.

Michael Warden, the CPRE’s Arun Group chairman, said: “I spoke to some of the walkers last night and they said one of the best things about our country is its beautiful countryside and how we look after it.

“This walk has made a huge difference to the CPRE by highlighting what we are trying to do to a broader audience than we would have otherwise.”

Among the small group of supporters at the finish was Felpham resident and Bill Bryson fan, Sheila Carter. Mr Bryson signed her copy of The Road to Little Dribbling as a keepsake of the day.

Cars are stars at yearly gala SCORES of cars gave visitors to an annual event in Bognor Regis the chance to drive into the past.

More than 180 vehicles were taken along by their proud owners to the latest A Drive Through Time motor gala.

They ranged in age from a 1927 Austin 206 to a 2009 Skoda Octavia VRS to provide plenty of interest to those at the event held by Bognor Regis Town Council in temperatures which reached 31C. One of the oldest vehicles among the motoring history in the line-up at West Park was a 1933 Austin Seven two-seat tourer owned by Pagham couple Dave and Teresa Stokes.

Mr Stokes, who is in his 60s, said: "I've always owned Austin Sevens for 25 years and I've had this car for ten years.

"I have a passion for pre-war cars. They are easy to maintain, easy to drive and relatively cheap and I get a lot of pleasure and enjoyment from driving them.

"They are relatively basic cars, especially the braking. You have to think of that well in advance but it only has a top speed of 40-45mph."

Sunday's event kept up the ever-present record of Mr and Mrs Stokes at the seven galas since it returned in its present form.

A newcomer to the current event was John Newlan, 49, of Croydon, with his 1993 Ford Orion 1.4LX. "I've been to the gala before but not since it's been here," he said.

"I've owned this car for 23 of its 25 years and there are only 25-30 left on the road

out of the 3.5m that were built.

"I've clocked up 312,000 miles in it on the original engine and been to the south of France and Ireland.

"I've always had Ford cars. These cars are ideal for everything - you can go to work in them and you can go away in them."

Three clubs were represented - Sadcase, PT Cruisers and Manhood - along with some 15 motorcycles.

A range of 20 craft and charity stalls also provided plenty of interest. Live music was provided by a selection of musicians.

The British Grand Prix was shown live on a big screen and was followed by an screening of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Town council events officer Kirsten Fitzpatrick said the event was well attended. "The kids' zone was busy with ride-on tractors, dodgems, mobile laser tag and many more attractions, including Zaz the Clown and his big top.

"The atmosphere around the big screen for the grand prix was electric and very verbal as it was a great race," she said.

"I think the intense heat of the day may have become too much for many spectators as the screening of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang had very low numbers."

The winning entries were: Best clubstand car: PT Cruisers; Best clubstand bike: Classic mopeds; Best car: Morris 1000 GUN 249D; Best vintage car: Bentley UC 4429; Best modern car: Aston Martin J44 RGW; Best quirky: Nimrod 75 years old; Best bike: BSA 605 UXN.

WOMEN'S pension campaigners from around Chichester and Bognor Regis will be travelling to a regional rally tomorrow.

The Bognor and Chichester South Coast WASPI group is among those taking part in the major event in Southampton.

They will be among nine groups from the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) movement which will be joining in the march from the civic centre to the West Quay shopping centre in Above Bar Street, where they will arrive at midday.

Jill Robertson, founder of Bognor and Chichester South Coast WASPI, said: "Participating groups are part of a national network campaigning for fair transitional payments for women born in the 1950s who have had their state pension age raised by as much as six years with little, or no, notice.

"Many have suffered severe hardship as a result, affecting not only women but their families too."

Awards given to top Scouting members SHOCKED Nathan Bilham received Scouting’s top honour at the movement’s big night in Bognor Regis.

Nathan was presented with the Queen’s Scout Award in recognition of his work and dedication.

He is one of only three Scouts in the county to receive the award so far this year.

Only four were honoured during 2017.

Tsunami Explorer Scout Nathan, 18, who is also a Scout Leader with the 2nd Bognor Group, said: “I’m quite ecstatic about gaining the award.

"I knew I had gained it but I was shocked to be presented with it tonight. I’m going to enjoy wearing it.”

Nathan, a woodworking student at Chichester College, has been involved with Scouting since he was six.

“It give us you so many opportunities, gets you out of your comfort zone and you meet new people," he said.

He is about to attend a camp in Holland after having been to France in 2017.

The presentation was carried out by Matthew Pike, Scouting’s deputy county commissioner for programmes.

“The Queen’s Scout Award is the pinnacle of our youth programme,” he said. “It’s on a par with the gold award in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. It takes a lot of commitment to complete this award.”

To qualify for the award, a Scout must spend 18 nights away, of which 12 must be camping and take part in one of five challenge activities.

Six activities from the international, community and values list such as developing Scouting in an area and taking part in a project at a campsite abroad must also be completed.

Nathan’s presentation ended the latest annual meeting of the Bognor Regis and District Scouts.

District chairman Ken Poupart said “We continue to grow and the movement continues to flourish in our town. During the past year, a new group, 2nd Felpham, has started in the community building in North Bersted.

“Whilst only a Beaver colony at present, it has great potential. We just need the leaders to help us, and this year we have been lucky to recruit a number, but more are always needed.”

He said the number of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts around the district was upwards of 600.

New District Commissioner Vicki Goodland said she was committed with her new Deputy District Commissioner, Chris Boreham, to making Bognor Regis the friendliest and most forward-thinking district in the county.

“I hope you will all help along the way to make this happen. I cannot express how much all the time you give to Scouting can impact on the lives of the young people in our care. We can change lives,” she said.

Her first presentations of the night saw the awards for the top Beaver go to Alfie Aquah, top Cub to Jessie Kempson and best Scout to Ella Drumbell.

The night also saw the first presentation of the Bill Robinson Memorial Trophy, pictured below, for the best entertainment. Named after a former district commissioner, it dates from 1937 as the Bognor District Scouts' athletics trophy from 1937.

Bath time for Birds It’s not just plants that thrive in gardens, birds love them – and they love them even more when there’s a birdbath to visit.

Water helps keep a bird’s body cool both from the inside and outside. Offering water in your garden will attract more birds than just those looking for food, since birds that would not normally visit feeders can be tempted by water features Birds fly to birdbaths for the water they need -- for drinking and for grooming – and whilst they are there they will hunt for the insects, worms, seeds and flower parts they like to eat. In the process they will help aerate the soil, help tidy up dead plant material and help keep plants healthy as they devour pests.

The best birdbaths are normally shallow with sloping sides, rather than deep pools of water. The shallow pitch lets smaller birds wade in, where they can stand up and clean their feathers instead of having to jump in.

Leave plenty of open space around the birdbath as well, so that birds can see any predators from far off. Also, place the birdbath near a perch of some sort, such as a small open tree or on a trellis or arbor. That lets birds scan the horizon from high up before swooping in to the bath.

The simplest birdbath is a terracotta plant pot saucer with some small stones – and is very easy to make yourself.

Just grab a large terracotta plant pot and saucer, some all-purpose glue for outside use and some rounded stones (about the size of a plum). Turn the pot upside down and scrub the base clean. Then apply a generous layer of waterproof glue to the base. Place the saucer on the base of the pot, settling it into the glue. Leave it for 24 hours to ensure that the glue dries thoroughly.

Place the birdbath in a suitable spot, add some stones so birds can perch to drink and then add some fresh, clean water.

The pebbles also provide an escape

route for honeybees that are frequent visitors to bird baths as they need water to regulate temperature within the colony on hot summer days.

PROGRESS by Sussex Police in tackling crime and supporting victims has been put under the spotlight.

The recruitment of more police officers, investment in community investigation teams and funding for community projects were among the initiatives included in an annual report to the Sussex Police and Crime Panel.

The report was presented by Sussex police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne. "It looks at the progress made against the policing and crime priorities," she said, "strengthening local policing, working with communities and partners, protecting vulnerable people and improving access to justice for victims and witnesses."

Success of college's graduates celebrated f An M&S employee helps the Aldingbourne Trust

Store staff lend helping hands STORE staff swopped checkouts for cakes when they helped at the Aldingbourne Country Centre.

Employees of the Marks & Spencer stores in Chichester spent a day at the centre to help the work of its operator, the Aldingbourne Trust, to assist peple with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else to live independent lives.

One set of workers baked mouthwatering brownies alongside the people the trust supports and potted plants in the horticulture department.

The other team, consisting of just two people, tackled the mammoth

task of painting the centre's rugwash cabin in 30 degree heat.

Debbie Wells, the trust's external communications officer, said: "We are truly blessed so many organisations want to come and spend the day with us and help with the never-ending list of jobs to be done.

"The difference teams like Marks & Spencer make has a huge impact on everyone in the trust."

One of the M&S employees involved said: "It was wonderful to be able to work with everyone and be useful.

"What an exciting and happy place the trust is."

GRADUATES of Chichester College had their achievements recognised at a special ceremony.

The event at Chichester Cathedral celebrated the hard work of the students who had completed their higher national certificates (HNCs), higher national diplomas (HNDs) or foundation degrees in subjects from animal management to performing arts.

The cathedral was packed with family members, college staff, governors and guests. They included Professor Catherine Harper, the deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Chichester, who gave

an inspiring speech and presented certificates. Emily Boyce achieved an HND in equine management and is going on to the Royal Agricultural University to complete her top up degree.

She said: "It's been a lot of hard work but definitely worth it - especially being able to come here to celebrate and enjoy the day. We've had a lot of support from our lecturers, who have pushed us and helped us to achieve the best of our abilities."

Amy Allan graduated with an HNC in performing arts (acting) and paid tribute to her lecturers. "They've given me so much support and helped me to grow

into the person I am today," she said.

Shelagh Legrave, chief executive of the Chichester College Group, led the ceremony, which started a procession of college staff and dignitaries.

"We are always so proud to celebrate and honour the hard work and achievements of our new graduates. They have all put in so much effort into reaching this point and have demonstrated an enormous amount of dedication, commitment and passion for their subjects," she said.

During the ceremony, Sussex Snowdrop Trust co-founder Diana Leventine was awarded an honorary fellowship.

Homeopathic remedies can stop world spinning around I AM NOT professing to be an expert in homeopathy, but I do know that when I test patients to check their health issues, sometimes homeopathic remedies will be specifically recommended for certain conditions, and they can be highly effective.

One of the things I have found homeopathic pills helpful for is dizziness. Dizziness is a term used to describe a range of sensations, such as feeling faint, woozy, weak or unsteady.

Dizziness that creates the false sense you or your surroundings are spinning or moving is called vertigo. Frequent dizzy spells or constant dizziness can significantly affect your life. But, in my experience, dizziness rarely signals a life-

threatening condition.

Dizziness has many possible causes, including inner ear disturbance, motion sickness and medication effects. Sometimes it's caused by an underlying health condition, such as poor circulation, infection or injury.

The way dizziness makes you feel and your triggers provide clues for possible causes. How long the dizziness lasts and any other symptoms you have also help pinpoint the cause.

Your sense of balance depends on the combined input from the various parts of your sensory system. These include: • Eyes, which help you determine where your body is in space and how it's moving; • Sensory nerves, which send messages to your brain about body movements and positions.

• Inner ear, which houses sensors that help detect gravity and back-and-forth motion.

Vertigo is the false sense that your surroundings are spinning or moving. With inner ear disorders, your brain receives signals from the inner ear that aren't consistent with what your eyes and sensory nerves are receiving. Vertigo is what results as your brain works to sort out the confusion.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) - This condition causes an intense and brief but false sense that you're spinning or moving. These episodes are triggered by a rapid change in head movement, such as when you turn over in bed, sit up or experience a blow to the head. BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo.

Infection - A viral infection of the vestibular nerve, called vestibular neuritis, can cause intense, constant vertigo. If you also have sudden hearing loss, you may have labyrinthitis.

Meniere's disease - This disease involves the

excessive build up of fluid in your inner ear. It's characterised by sudden episodes of vertigo lasting as long as several hours. You may also experience fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ear and the feeling of a plugged ear.

Migraine - People who experience migraines may have episodes of vertigo or other types of dizziness even when they're not having a severe headache.

Such vertigo episodes can last minutes to hours and may be associated with headache as well as light and noise sensitivity.

Circulation problems that cause dizziness - You may feel dizzy, faint or off balance if your heart isn't pumping enough blood to your brain. Causes include: drop in blood pressure and poor blood circulation.

Other causes of dizziness can include neurological conditions, medications, anxiety disorders, low iron, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and overheating and dehydration.

The top three homeopathic remedies to use for dizziness are: Belladonna 200 - Belladona is a leading homeopathic medicine for treating dizziness and

vertigo when the condition worsens with every change of position.

The person may show the tendency to fall to the left side or backwards. Vertigo can also be accompanied by an acute headache and the patient usually gets some relief by applying pressure or binding the head. The body may also experience excessive heat.

Homeopathic medicine belladona is extremely beneficial for treating acute vertigo. Belladonna is effective for vertigo because of cervical spondylitis.

Gelsemium 200 - Gelsemium is the top homeopathic medicine for treating vertigo when extreme dizziness is linked with dim vision and heaviness of eyelids.

Vertigo may pose a difficulty in walking with a loss of balance. Gelsemium is one of best natural remedies for dizziness when the patient feels extreme vertigo with dim vision and heavy eyelids. Gelsemium is effective for vertigo because of cervical spondylitis.

China 30 - China is another good homeopathic medicine for vertigo patients after loss of blood or after loss of fluids as in diarrhea.

Vertigo because of anaemia is best cured with the use of this homeopathic medicine. If you feel very weak, dizzy and walking too is proving to be very difficult, the homeopathic remedy China will help in compensating the loss of body fluids and treating vertigo.

IN THIS balmy weather, if a barbecue is your wont, then Machin is your man - Chichester's own Gordon (not Alf ) Ramsay with his array of fine utensils and culinary prowess and so it had to be a soirée foot chez Lynne and Paul resulting in celebration, gourmandise and jolly fine company!

The hosts proceeded to point me in the direction of Asda in downtown Selsey as my next featured purveyor of wine.

This week I vowed to explore mainly entry- level wines and was thus delighted to espy a Winemaker's Choice SemillonSauvignon from New South Wales in Australia at the very low price of just £4.18 and found that this wine exceeded my admittedly rather low expectations

and proved to be very quaffable - an easy-drinking wine with flavours of citrus and passion fruit.

I next decided to examine two New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs as they were both priced under £6.50.

In fact, the 2017 Kiwi Cove Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is on offer for a miserly £6 and is a slightly sharp, but fruity example with gooseberry to the fore.

For just £6.48, the 2017 Extra Special Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc also oozes gooseberry, but is more perfumed and a little more subtle.

My final white wine selection was an Extra Special 2017 Gavi priced at just under £7, sporting lemon and floral notes and being crisp and dry with hints of peach culminating in a nutty finish - a decent enough Gavi at this price!

In terms of reds, I was able to procure a Winemaker's Choice Valle Central of Chilean provenance for a bargain £4.18.

Chilean wine sometimes goes under the radar and this one is perfectly palatable with plum and cherry flavours and undoubtedly would complement slow cooked beef.

For an outlay of just five readies, the 2016 Étoile de Nuit Cabernet

Sauvignon Vin de France is no worldbeater, but is fairly smooth with blackcurrant flavours to the fore and should not offend!

Furthermore, for the same price, a 2017 Luis Felipe Edwards Reserva Merlot made from premium grapes grown in the

Colchagua Valley in Chile and aged using a mixture of French and American oak is a very good buy and a rather splendidly smooth Merlot!

My final selection was that of a 2015 Extra Special Fleurie at the lofty price of £7.98.

Vivid crimson red in colour with a mulberry and blueberry nose and a hint of framboise, the smooth soft tannins and fresh acidity add to the elegance of this Beaujolais wine and it is indubitably my wine of the week and one you should definitely try!

Community News & Views TWO POLICE officers have been recognised for tackling an armed man in Chichester.

PC Michael Sedley and PC Stuart Murray, pictured below with Sussex Police Chief Constable Giles York, were given a chief constable's commendation award for their calm and collective manner during the volatile incident.

Their outstanding contribution was praised at the annual awards ceremony for West Sussex held by Sussex Police last week. The occasion was held at Arundel Castle.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said PC Sedley and PC Murray 'attended a report of a violent incident in Chichester and on arrival they were confronted by a man with a knife'.

"Despite one of the officers being injured by the knife, the pair disarmed the man and, with the help of another crew, the suspect was arrested. The suspect pleaded guilty to a number of offences and was given a custodial sentence."

Other award recipients came from across the county to acknowledge the achievements of their colleagues and members of the public. The presentations were made by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Caroline Nicholls, Chief Constable York and Sussex police and commissioner Katy Bourne.

After the ceremony, West Sussex Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Jerry Westerman, said: "I am extremely proud of the staff and officers on West Sussex division and the dedication and professionalism they deliver to achieve excellent public service on a day to day basis.

"This ceremony acknowledges the commitment of our staff, officers and volunteers to achieve the best outcomes for the communities they serve and bring offenders to justice.

"We have also recognised members of the public whose quick thinking and selfless actions have made a positive difference to others."

Sir, I just feel I have to take the time to thank a number of people who helped me on Friday, June 29, lunchtime in Chichester.

My husband and I had travelled from Wales to be at our grandson's grandparents morning at school and their sports day in the afternoon.

After a lovely morning at the school, my husband and I went for a light lunch in Chichester and had to return to the car, which was parked in a small car park down a side road opposite Marks and Spencer.

Unfortunately, returning from the car park, we went through the gate into the street, and I had a nasty fall, not seeing the bad hole between the paving. I am 67 years old and it really was a nasty fall.

I would like through your paper to thank firstly the young gentleman that stopped straight away to ask if we needed an ambulance. He helped my husband get me to my feet to check if I could put weight on my leg and foot.

A young lady,who had a baby in a pram, had seen me fall and gone to M&S to get a bottle of water and the chemist for some dressings for my wounds. She would accept no payment.

An older couple stopped to see if they could give us a lift to the hospital or anywhere and even a teenage boy stopped to ask if we needed any help or if he could do anything for us.

I would like to thank all these wonderful people for showing a caring attitude and it’s because of people like this we retain our faith in humanity.

Needless to say I couldn’t make it to my grandson’s sports day.

STUDENT carpenters have been donated materials and kitchen units to help with their courses at Chichester College.

The donation forms part of a new sponsorship agreement between the university and the Chichester and Bognor Regis branches of Covers builders' merchant.

The deal will continue the work the company has done to encourage and inspire students who hope to undertake a career in the timber and construction trades.

Covers' managing director, Henry Green, said: "At Covers, we are extremely proud of our highly skilled team.

"It is only through courses like those offered by Chichester College that we can continue to welcome new professionals in the trade.

Peter held the athletic occasion in aid of Chestnut House Tree Hospice as a fitting way to mark his milestone while living with prostate cancer.

He said: "I shall be handing funds of around £1,000 to the hospice. It was a great day.

"I had 100 runners turn out and all finished with no injuries. Everyone enjoyed

RESIDENTS living in flats and shared houses around Bognor Regis are being encouraged to recycle more.

Monday saw the start of an initiative which makes it easier to avoid throwing away waste which can be given a new use.

The residents will be among the 8,000 in West Sussex who will receive new communal recycling bins and information packs.

It is hoped this will help overcome the barriers which can make recycling hard when space is limited or a person is new to an area. This often means recycling rates for flats and shared houses can be a lot lower than for other properties.

Information packs, which include a free reusable bag to collect recycling, will be delivered to relevant properties.

Cllr Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for environment, said: "Following on from the awardwinning houses of multiple occupancy recycling project in 2016, we've seen a big improvement in recycling quality and rates by flats and shared houses that were involved.

"With such an improvement, it makes perfect sense for us to roll this out to more flats and shared households across the county, so that more people can boost their recycling.

"The see-through recycling bins and updated recycling information will help to improve how much waste is recycled by individuals and will ultimately help us to reach our target of 50 per cent of all household waste being recycled by 2020."

The approach was piloted in 2016 to tackle historic difficulties in increasing and improving recycling rates and the quality of the items recycled from flats and communal properties. This was shown to improve residents' recycling rates by 94 per cent.

The initiative started in Crawley and has moved to Arun District Council for six weeks. Other areas which will also benefit from the scheme will be Chichester, Mid-Sussex, Adur and Worthing.

Arun District Council's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, said: "The council is delighted to see this partnership initiative rolled out to a greater number of flats and houses of multiple occupancy in the district.

"After the success of the pilot scheme, we are confident that the communal bins and information packs will lead to an increase in recycling rates and an improvement in the quality of materials collected.

During the six weeks, teams will visit certain flats across the district and answer residents' questions about recycling.

NURSES have been recognised for their work in improving nursing in special educational needs schools in West Sussex.

The Children's and Young People's Community Nursing Service were crowned the winners of this year's RCNi child health award in London last week.

The awards are run by the subsidiary of the Royal College of Nursing as the most prestigious nursing accolades in the UK to highlight the work of nurses who provide outstanding care and transform nursing for the better.

Trudy Ward and her nursing team, pictured above, were shortlisted from more than 700 entries. They were chosen by judges for developing a tool to improve the poor access to nursing care of 1,500 children and young people who attend special educational needs schools in West Sussex.

The impact of the team's work is shown by the increase in nursing support from two to ten nurses in these schools. The team is also working with NHS England to spread the use of the tool to four other areas.

Trudy said: "I feel very proud of myself and the team to have received an RCNi Award. The award means an awful lot for the community and the schools that we serve."

RCNi managing director Rachel Armitage said it was overjoyed to honour the nursing team for its hard work.

"They are a magnificent example of nurses who have gone above and beyond in their specialism," she said.

Herds of milking cows were common sight Supplying dairy products ran in the family for the early suppliers in the town ONE OF our diminishing services is that of the daily delivery of fresh milk to our doorstep.

How many people remember finding the milk float in front of us when travelling by road from Bognor Regis to Chichester?

However, this has not always been the case, so I thought we should have a look at the history of this customer service.

Around the 1830s it would have been a common sight to see herds of milking cows passing along the streets and lanes around Bognor. For example, Dungcart Lane, which is today known as Hawthorn Road, is one road that was used for this purpose.

We should remember that at this time much

of the land surrounding Bognor was pasture land, with numerous farms. It was the farmers who were to become the dairymen who first delivered milk to our doorstep.

An early sight would have been the milkman, with his horse and cart ladened with a number of large milk churns on the back. Hung over the side of the churns were the ladles of different sizes, which were used to measure the milk when the housewives came out from their houses with either a jug or pot seeking a specific amount of milk.

Recently, I have read that milk was also peddled around the area in open buckets carried on a shoulder yoke from customer to customer.

One of the earliest references I have found dates back to the 1840s when there appeared to be two main families who were trading as dairymen. Firstly, the Boiling family, who were situated in Chapel Street. John Boiling ran the business from the 1840s and his son, Philip, took over from the 1850s.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any further reference to this family.

Another name that is synonymous with milk in the town is that of the Munday family, who for over 150 years have been involved with dairying, printing and also as coal merchants.

However, the dairying only lasted for a small number of years. George Munday first operated as a dairyman from a site in Gloucester Road in the 1840s.

This site used to have a tuck shop on the corner with the junction of the High Street.

George’s grandson, Alfred, grew up in the dairy trade and worked there for several years, but he eventually decided he did not wish to work on a Sunday so transferred to the coal trade. Alfred will be remembered by some for the development of the Glenwood Estate, which was to occupy part of the land that the Munday family owned for over 60 years.

Another branch of the family, James and Frederick, operated from Dorset Gardens in the 1850s while Charles Munday operated from the Upper Bognor Road in the 1860s and

1870s. Dorset Gardens eventually became part of London Road.

A report in the press in 1960 remarked that 'a firm which first opened in London in 1812, the year Napoleon retreated from Moscow, came to an end this week on the retirement of Mr EA Munday'.

By the 1860s, another family had appeared in the scene, the Sait family. This family was to remain within the town for more than 100 years. In 1878, Edward Sait was a dairyman living at Bersted Lodge Farm, near to the site of today’s Hotham Park House.

He also operated his business from premises in Dorset Gardens, at a time when the land opposite was still grazing land. Ultimately, this area became engulfed in the newly developing London Road.

By 1903 he had premises at 35 and 37 High Street, where they were known as The Bognor Creamery. Here he sold homemade cakes and dairy produce until about 1930, and was considered a great asset to the town’s prosperity.

Sait was the first to sell ice cream in Bognor, which was considered to be a real luxury. He gradually expanded until he eventually had shops in Aldwick, Felpham and Middleton on sea.

In the 1930s, Sait advertised as 'Sait Gold Medal Dairies' which boasted that they supplied the highest quality and cleanest milk in West Sussex. However, in the 1920s, the company was taken over by Chichester Dairies, although they continued to trade under the very familiar and friendly family name.

One of the employees of Sait started work for Edward Sait as an errand boy at the age of 12. He worked as a milkman until he retired at the age of 64. He started work at 5am each day and when he had completed his three rounds he would have delivered in the region of 25 gallons of milk a day.

His first round would commence at 6.30am with another at 10.30am which would be the round to visit the local schools and hotels.

In the afternoon, he would complete his last round, sometimes revisiting homes from the first round.

At first his means of transport was a milktruck, which was at that time known as a ‘pram’ in the trade. He then progressed to a pony and float for a short time, before he was able to use the ‘pedestrian controlled electric cart’ until finally he had an electric powered van.

I am sure many people will have stories to tell of the milkmen who delivered milk on a daily basis. It seems to have almost been an institution in its time.

There have over the years been a number of companies who operated locally, such as Mortimers in Bedford St, Express Dairies in Clifton Road. In North Bersted, there was AE Turner and Son and in the Upper Bognor Road there was a farm and I know that some people can even remember the horses that would be stabled there.

It is also difficult to visualise that the Co-op dairies had a site on the junction of Ockley Road and Argyle Circus. I can remember this depot and when my parents would buy some Devonshire cream from it when they visited.

Hosts are volunteers who would like to provide afternoon tea, sandwiches and cakes for up to 10 lonely elderly people. The meetings take place in the host’s own home on the 3rd Sunday of each month, from 3 to 5pm. While meetings take place monthly, it is unlikely that the volunteer host would be asked to hold a meeting more than once a year. You will need a good heart, a large tea pot, space for 10 guests in a ground floor room and a down stairs toilet.

Triples all round! Players roll up to PostSport Infinity's short mat bowls contest BOWLERS from across the south of England flocked to a village just outside Chichester for a fierce afternoon of indoor sporting action.

While many people were enjoying the great outdoors, teams from West Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey assembled at Boxgrove Village Hall to battle against each other in the annual Infinity Short Mat Bowls Club triples competition.

Played on a mat just over a metre wide and 12 metres long, players had to roll their bowls up to a marked point in a bid to register points The game is designed to be accessible, not weather dependent, and a cheaper form of sport to the outdoor game, which requires manicured lawns.

After a few hours of good competition, none of the home team made it through to the final.

Instead, the last match saw the North End team of Martin Grange, Lorraine Shorney and Andrew Shorney defeating Wendy Ford, Ian Ford and Martin Dubb from Portsdown on the last end by one shot.

The Infinity squad did not have to wait long to show their form, though.

On Sunday, seven of their players travelled to Tamworth to play in the English Short Mat

Bowlers Association Top Team competition.

They won seven out of eight games finishing second in their group. They now qualify to play in Torquay next May. Infinity are always looking to welcome new players to the club. Formed in 2010, the club practice every Tuesday from 7.30pm. * In the outdoor form of the game, Bognor Men’s A team played Norfolk in the West Sussex Division One league. They won on one rink and drew one, and lost two, scoring three league points. The best performance was from M Conolly, D Parker, G Stevens and A Richardson who won 15-13.

Bognor A made up for that loss with victory in a close match against Tarring Priory. After winning the overall score by one shot, Bognor A came away with six points In Division Two, Bognor B played Crablands and won on two rinks but lost overall 72-83, scoring four points.

They returned to action on Monday, defeating local rivals Pagham 86-71 overall to take six league points.

Next up, Bognor A welcome Worthing Pavilion A to Waterloo Square on Sunday (2pm).

DARTS: Micky Rowland threw just 28 darts - which included a 111 out shot - as he inspired his Friary Z side to a convincing win over Claremont in week eight of the Bognor Summer Darts League.

Saxon Warrior heads Glorious festival list

THE CREME de la creme of the racing world will flock to Goodwood for this year's festival.

With just three weeks until Glorious, preparations for the five-day event from July 31 to August 4 are already well underway.

The highlight of many people's week will be the £1 million Qatar Sussex Stakes which takes place on the Wednesday and is one of the world's leading mile races.

There is a cosmopolitan feel to the entries, with 46 horses from five countries including Australia and the USA, put forward for the event.

Among them is Australia’s top sprinter, Redkirk Warrior, and fellow Royal Ascot contender Yoshida, who is trained by legendary American handler Bill Mott.

Britain and Ireland’s reigning champion trainer, Aidan O’Brien, a winner of the Sussex race five times, has 14 of the entries, with 2,000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior and threetime Group 1 winner Rhododendron among them. All the entries will have to go some way

to emulate the success of previous winners, who include the legendary Frankel, who won the 2011 and 2012 races.

The other days of racing are equally highquality. British Classic winners Forever Together and Billesdon Brook feature among 20 fillies and mares entered for the £600,000 Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, the highlight of the Thursday programme.

Other exciting three-year-olds among the Qatar Nassau Stakes entries include Sea Of Class (William Haggas), unbeaten this season after two impressive Listed victories at Newbury, and Veracious (Sir Michael Stoute), a daughter of Frankel and third in the Coronation Stakes.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, in the £500,000 Group One Goodwood Cup, there will be a tasty re-match as defending champion Stradivarius (John Gosden) and Vazirabad (Alain de Royer-Dupre) face-off just over a month after only being separated by threequarters of a length in Ascot Gold Cup.

ATHLETICS: On a very hot weekend, the Tone Zone runners turned out in force at various different races, the Serpent Ultra, Round the Island 70miler and the Portchester 10k.

The Serpent Ultra was going to be a tough race with 31 miles of off road running. The searing heat made it even harder with training essential.

Neil Strudwick was one runner who had been training tremendously hard.

Even though he did take a wrong turn and run an extra mile, Strudwick finished his third ultra marathon in under 6 hours 50 minutes.

Grace Natoli didn’t mind the heat too much, but that may be because she was enjoying the watermelon that was being handed out. She finished in 7:14, while Cheryl Laing (7:32) and Denise SadlerMoznabi (8:14) also completed the race.

Also running at the Serpent event was Natalie King, who ran the half marathon in 3:17.

Just across the sea at the Isle of Wight were Paul Coe and Chris Dummer, running around the island in two days - 39 miles on the first and 31 on the second. The pair did extremely well to complete the race, Coe in nine hours for day one and 6:51 for day two while Dummer stopped the clock on 9:42 and 8:43.

A race a little closer to home was the Portchester Castle 10k. The four runners from the club were Pater Ramsdale, Jessica Thomson, Michael Manwill and Adam Norgett.

Despite having to run slightly further than expected, Thomson was the second female to complete the course in 48 minutes. Manwill was the next runner in club colours across the line just under 50 minutes. Ramsdale finished in the hour mark. Norgett ended up running a further 1.2 miles because of a mistake by the marshals sending him the wrong way. He still finished in a respectable time of 1:06.

Pagham move on after a late run-out seals dramatic draw

Ladies hurry to add Hurrell CHICHESTER City Ladies are fit and raring to go for the new season with a new coaching duo in the dugout.

It's been a summer of real progress for the Oaklands Park side with the team confirmed as founder members of the FA Women's National League.

With their status in the third tier of the women's game, Chi have also appointed a new manager with Aaron Smith stepping up from the assistant role ahead of pre-season friendlies starting this Sunday with a home match against Southern Counties Premier side Winchester City (2pm).

That will be followed by away trips to Poole Town (July 22) and Lewes (Aug 5) before a home match against Super League Two side Tottenham Ladies (Aug 12).

Chi go into those games with a new experienced head in the dugout after former Bristol City and Brighton & Hove Albion coach Lee Hurrell was confirmed as Smith’s number two. Hurrell joins following a season as coach of the under16s at Brighton & Hove Albion Women.

game, which also includes spells at Portsmouth Ladies and Toronto in Canada Hurrell said: "A lot of players I’ve worked with have gone on to play at the highest level, so I’ve been around that elite level of women’s football. That will also enable me to bring professionalism that into my role."

Hurrell is manager Smith's first appointment ahead of the new season in the FA Women's National League South with more new faces expected to arrive.

With a number of young players breaking into the first team, a thriving youth setup and dozens of youngsters turning out for last weekend’s club trials, there is a real feelgood factor around Oaklands Park.

Hurrell said he was looking forward to helping that develop, adding: "I believe that Chichester are well placed to progress in the game.

Although the FA have changed things, those clubs that are well run can make the step up.

You don’t necessarily have to have the backing of a big men’s club to do things. Lewes have shown that and it’s certainly possible."

PAGHAM CC will look to keep their unbeaten run going into a seventh week when they head to Roffey Seconds tomorrow (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side have been in excellent form of late, winning five of their past six games to propel themselves up to third in Sussex Division Three West.

That run was continued in dramatic style last weekend when they sealed a dramatic draw with a last ball run-out against Worthing.

With the match starting early so that it did not clash with England's World Cup game with Sweden, Pagham batted first and registered an excellent score of 283 for five in their 50 overs.

The charge was led by opening batter Jack Stannard who dropped anchor and played superbly to score 112, and Ryan Barratt, who smashed an unbeaten 101 from just 85 balls.

But Worthing showed they were up to the challenge. Rico Webb (5-89) kept on pegging them back until a121-run partnership for the seventh wicket put the visitors well in reach.

Pagham kept on fighting and took the last four wickets for eight runs - including a last ball run-out - to seal the draw and keep their unbeaten run going for another week.

Relegation worry for Middleton MIDDLETON CC will spend the rest of the season looking over their shoulder as their win-less run continues.

With just over half the season gone, Sean Heather's side are third bottom in the Sussex Premier Division, one place and 13 points above the drop zone.

They will look to put some breathing space between themselves and relegation when they face second-bottom Hastings & St Leonards at Sea Lane tomorrow (12pm).

Without a win in three and tomorrow's visitors winning their first in five, Middleton

know that a victory would give them great confidence into the final two months of the campaign.

If there is a bright spark it is the form of overseas player Mahesh Rawat, who scored another century in Middleton's eight-wicket loss to leaders Roffey. Batting first, the Indian was left unbeaten on 116 as Middleton were bowled out for 233.

In reply, Roffey showed why they are topof-the-table and an unbeaten stand of 160 between Jibran Khan (100*) and Rohit Jagota (86*) saw them home with eight wickets and

seven overs to spare.

In Division Two, Chichester Priory Park return to their traditional home needing a much-needed win against Bexhill (12.30pm).

Skipper Jay Hartard must have thought his century (100) against Lindfield last time out had helped his side to victory. Along with 62 from Joe De La Fuente, their scoring helped Chi to 250 for 7 in 50 overs.

But the home side timed their chase beautifully, reaching the score with two balls and five wickets to spare.

That loss means Chi are now in sixth place in the ten-team division, closer to the bottom two than the top two.

Fellow Division Two side Bognor are perhaps more wary of relegation, sitting just once place above the dropzone.

They head to second-placed Mayfield tomorrow (12.30pm) to face a team which has not lost in five matches.

Ryan Maskell's side turned in perhaps their poorest performance of the season when they were defeated by third-place Haywards Heath last weekend.

After batting first, Bognor toiled in warm conditions and could only reach 115 before being dismissed with number ten Jamie Woolnough top-scoring with 29.

In reply, Joel Barker (3-15) led the charge for Maskell's side but the total was never going to be enough. Heath reached the score with three wickets in hand.

Pagham prepare for a promotion push THIRD place in the SCFL Premier, more than 100 goals scored, a cup final appearance and another semi-final place - it was a season to remember for Pagham last time out.

But hopes are high around Nyetimber Lane that the club can go one, maybe two better, and secure promotion to the Isthmian League for the first time in the club's history.

With the joint-management team of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds retained, the club have recruited well. Seasoned goalscorer George Gaskin and club legend Scott Murfin have joined, along with winger Hayden Hunter (East Preston), Liam Humphreys, Mitchell Hand (both Littlehampton) and Harry Williams (Chichester City).

Several players have also left the club for

various reasons including fan favourite Callum Overton. Lincoln keeps Rocks waiting as Jack places trust in Tommy Next Game

BOGNOR number one Dan Lincoln is keeping the Rocks waiting when it comes to committing his future to the club - but the Nye Camp faithful may soon have a new goalscorer to cheer on.

Lincoln has received rave reviews after joining the club from Reading two season ago.

But, the Berkshire-based stopper appears to be keeping his options open, before agreeing a deal to stay at Nyewood Lane - with Lincoln keen to find a side closer to his home.

With less than a month to go until the start of the season, it means Rocks manager Jack Pearce could be forced to act swiftly to ensure he has a pair of safe hands in goal.

At the other end of the pitch, the veteran manager and his first team coach, Robbie Blake, remain on the search for a striker to solve last season's goalscoring problems.

Pearce says he has a 'couple of irons in the fire' as he looks to add a frontman to lead the line and improve on Bognor's dismal scoring record last season which saw them average less than a goal every league game.

But he says he believes the club may have a goalscoring midfielder on their books already - with 19-year-old former Portsmouth academy player Tommy Scutt pencilled in for a key attacking role.

Speaking to the Post this week, Pearce said: "The one area we are weak is upfront. That was the problem last year and we will work hard to

make sure that's not the problem this year.

"We are willing to invest but it needs to be the right player."

As for a goalscoring midfielder, he added: "I have hopes that we have one already in the form of Tommy Scutt.

"He has a good thing about him and I intend to give him his chance in the pre-season friendlies. Hopefully, he will justify my faith in him."

Scutt has been among a group of about a dozen Rocks players who are well into their pre-season preparations.

With the first friendly coming next week against Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s (Tuesday, 7.45pm), a lot of the focus is on getting the squad fit and raring to go.

It has also given former Pompey coach Blake his first crack at implementing his ideas and philosophy on to the team.

Pearce said: "The focus has been on endurance work with a lot of running and small sided passing games.

"We always know where they are when the lads go quiet. When they stop talking, that's when we know that the work we are doing is having an impact on them."

The Rocks are set for a real test for the first pre-season fixture. Albion under-23s are packed full of young international players who have performed well in the age limit level of the FA Premier League.

While most have been left to cheer on the England side from the comfort of their own home, there has been at least one representative from Bognor at the World Cup. Rocks manager Jack Pearce, who is also a member of the FA board, was present at the Three Lions quarter-final against Sweden and the semi-final versus Croatia.

Despite racking up the air miles, Pearce said he was delighted to see the national team playing well on the biggest stage - adding it would have a positive impact on all levels of the game.

Pearce said: "Whenever you have a successful national team, that encourages the next generation of players which is good for all levels.

"It also has a wonderful impact on the nation - the wonderful way it brings people together and the feel-good factor it gives.

If we can produce a winning side, a young, hungry passing team with desire that wins matches, then Wembley will not be big enough to hold everyone who wants to watch them."

WITH the new season less than a month away, the Post spoke to Rocks manager Jack Pearce about how preparations for the new season are coming along.

How will the Bostik Premier compare to the National South?

The obvious thing is that Step Three should be an easier challenge. But when you are 11 against 11, there's no guarantees.

We do expect to give a good account of ourselves and we will see how we perform.

How will the disappointment of last season help the club this year?

The players will be a lot stronger for last season. I said after the last match of last season that some of them will get offers from elsewhere.

If we can keep them together then we will be a difficult team to play against.

There is one obvious area that we have been trying to improve on and that is up front. Until we get a goalscorer and attacking midfielder then we will struggle to score and win games.

How is the hunt for a striker going?

The hardest part is trying to sign forwards as everyone is after them.

It's hard to find people willing to commit at the moment but I have a couple of irons in the fire and I'm hopeful of securing someone next week.

The one area we are weak is upfront. That was the problem last year and we will work hard to make sure that's not the problem this year.

We are willing to invest but it needs to be the right player.

All I can say is that there is no one I know of in the immediate vicinity who can score goals in this division.

Will there be any other focus in the pre-season friendlies which start next week?

Pre-season doesn't change anything. The main thing is that come Friday, August 10, we don't have too many injuries through strains.

We need to make sure the players have had enough hard work so they are physically and mentally fit for what's to come.

Results in friendlies don't count. We need to make sure they are as fit as they can be for the start of the new season What do you make of England's success at the World Cup? What impact will that have on the Rocks?

I have been saying ever since I joined the FA board 18 years ago that the most important thing is a successful national team.

Whenever you have a successful national team that encourages the next generation of players which is good for all levels.

It also has a wonderful impact on the nation - the wonderful way it brings people together and the feel-good factor it gives.

We have seen over the years the number of fans who want to watch the dross we have produced over the years.

If we can produce a winning side, a young, hungry passing team with desire that wins matches then Wembley will not be big enough to hold everyone who wants to watch them.
