Beach action to tackle waste DOG POO patrols are planned on beaches in the Bognor Regis area.

THe focus on faeces will be part of a programme of measures to improve water quality off the coast.

THe enforcement patrols will be joined by dog education patrols as well as extra work to clear the foreshores of litter.

THe sites to be covered range from Bognor Aldwick beach to Middleton.

Extra dog waste bins, more litter bins

and additional litter and dog fouling signs have also been included in the proposed package of measures.

Work is due to start soon and continue for the rest of this summer as well as summer of 2019 until September.

Trust celebrates 20 years in park TWO DECADES of improving the jewel in the crown of Bognor Regis are being celebrated by a group of volunteers.

Members of Hotham Park Heritage Trust are marking the anniversary with a private occasion this Sunday. One of the regular music concerts is taking place in the afternoon on the bandstand.

THe results of the trust's work are enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors to the popular open space every year with its mixture of greenery, amenities and attractions. Events such as a carol concert, pictured above, and country fair are always popular.

Trust chairman Rosemary Warren can recall the effort that has been made since 1998 to ensure the legacies of the site's previous owners, such as Sir Richard Hotham and William Fletcher, remain at the forefront of its heritage.

"Although many of the original committee members are no longer with us, the trust continues to carry forward their ideals. I am grateful for the outstanding support I have received over the years from the trustees and members.

"THe trust members get pleasure from seeing the community enjoying the park and are always pleased to welcome new members, who may wish to join in their endeavours to protect the heritage of this unique and beautiful green space for the benefit of future generations."

THe park's nine hectares date from the 17th century when Sir Richard Hotham, the founder of Bognor, built the house and surrounded it with farmland. THe last

sole occupants of the property were Mr and Mrs William Fletcher, who lived there until 1941. THeir horticultural enthusiasm planted the seeds for today's park. THe site was bought by Bognor Regis' then council and opened to the public in 1947.

THe Great Storm of 1987 decimated the park and the closure of the Rainbow's End Adventure Park ten years later saw residents determined to ensure the park faced a brighter future.

A committee was formed by the late town environmentalist and eco-warrior, Laurie Barnes. Of its five other members, only Rosemary continues, though another, Derek Frampton, still belongs to the trust.

"THere was and still is a very clear objective of the trust, which is 'to promote for the benefit of the community the conservation, protection and improvement of Hotham Park'," said Rosemary.

THis was most spectacularly achieved in 2007 when a £2.2m lottery grant was awarded after a partnership with the park's owner, Arun District Council. THe work carried out can still be appreciated.

"Notably, it has been maintained to the standards expected whilst many other parks which have benefited from lottery funding have falled by the wayside," she said. "But it is becoming harder. It's a struggle to get younger members on board. We have an absolute maximum of 20 active members and trustees."

Despite this, the trust has still invested £100,000-plus into the park. THe schemes have included the children's play area, clock tower and wooden sculptures.

ONE OF the world's leading martial arts experts will be passing on his skills in Bognor Regis.

Matt Fiddes will be taking part in a fundraising day to help women in the town who have suffered abuse.

Some six sessions of martial arts displays are being staged during the June 17 occasion by tutors and students of his martial arts training school in the town. It is one of 600 he has founded across the world in a career which has seen him hailed as a martial arts superstar.

THe events will take place from 11am4pm on the recreation ground in front

of the Bognor Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane. THe sessions will include advice about how a person should react in a situation where they are scared and how they can protect themselves without harming others.

One of the organisers, Kirsty Vear, said: "We are raising money for the centre so they can continue to support women who have suffered abuse and to help them to get back on their feet to be able to live confidently."

It is hoped enough funds will be raised to buy equipment for the group which helps the women. THere will also be stalls selling items such as sweets.

Junior takeover sees new record set at run

A total of 151 runners took part in the weekly event after its organisation was handed over to members of the town's Scouting movement.

A large number of families and friends also went along to the occasion on Sunday morning to add to its success.

THe result of the involvement of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts was so positive that it could become an annual occurrence.

One of the runners, Millie Stallard, seven, said: "It should be like that all the time - lots of people.

"It was really good today. It made me run faster knowing that there were lots of people running behind me.

"I saw some friends from school who don't normally come and I think they

really liked it. I hope they all come back again."

THe junior parkrun was started in January, 2017, following the success of the Bognor Regis parkrun of 5km around Hotham Park after its launch in May, 2014.

THe junior version for 4-14 year-olds covers 2km at 9am on Sundays around a course next to the Arena Sports Centre off Westloats Lane.

THere have been 61 events and they have enabled more than 3,120 5km runs to be completed. THe events have attracted 565 runners.

THey are usually organised by a team of volunteers. One of the run directors, Daniel Hughes, led the takeover on Sunday.

THe Beavers, Cubs and Scouts volunteered to take on the roles usually

performed by the adults or ran around the course.

THeir abilities are set to see the swop repeated next June.

A spokesman for the junior parkrun: "THe Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were able to use the run to work towards receiving one of their community or athletic badges.

"It is also hoped that the new experience will encourage young people to come back each week with their siblings and families.

"THanks to all the volunteers, Cub, Beaver and Scout leaders and all of the awesome runners, too, who made this event truly amazing."

THe junior parkrun is not a race but the first runner home was Toby Clegg in 7min 49secs. Samuel Geall was second in 7:58 and third was Jessica Smith in 8:08.

Police make drugs arrests - see page 4

TWO NEW leaders have been chosen to lead hundreds of pupils in Westergate.

Pat Walters and Alan Westerman will jointly take control of Ormiston Six Villages Academy this September to build on the progress made by the current principal, Umbar Sharif.

Ms Sharif is leaving at the end of this term next month to take up another role after she has overseen significant improvements at the academy.

Her relentless focus on academic excellence has seen the 500-strong academy move up to a Ofsted 'good' rating last September.

Mrs Walters and Mr Westerman will share the principal role before Alan takes sole charge this December.

THey have been working with Ms Sharif to ensure a seamless transition.

Both have served as principals at other strong academies, such as George Salter Academy in West Bromwich, in the trust.

Mrs Walters said: "I have spent time at Six Villages as education advisor for Ormiston Academies Trust and I am honoured to be joining the team.

"I look forward to working with the staff, students, interim executive board and the wider school community, as well as the team at the trust to ensure that the academy goes from strength to strength."

Mr Westerman said he was committed to helping Six Villages to become an exceptional academy.

"I am delighted to have been

appointed to this role and to be joining an academy that is so clearly determined to continue to build on its current success," he said.

THe trust launched a national recruitment process this week and is looking to appoint a permanent principal from January, 2019.

Ms Sharif joined Six Villages, in Lime Avenue, in January, 2016. It was rated 'inadequate' that month by Ofsted.

But she led its efforts to achieve its current rating and the inspectors noted how rising standards had led to improved outcomes for students. Results for those in Year 11 were improving yearly. THey also commented on the commitment of staff to students' personal development.

Ms Sharif said: "I am immensely proud of everything that has been achieved at Six Villages and I have felt privileged to lead a dynamic, highly committed team of staff who believe in the limitless potential of every young person we serve."

"It has been a pleasure to support the development of our young people into lifelong learners with high aspirations, who I know will continue to flourish under the leadership of Mrs Walters and Mr Westerman."

Speaking on behalf of the interim executive board at Six Villages, Ken Lloyd paid tribute to Ms Sharif's hard work and dedication and said he was confident Mrs Walters and Mr Westerman would build on her legacy.

` Church parking BOOMING congregations have led trustees of an Aldingbourne church to seek more parking spaces.

THe Springfield Gospel Trust has applied for planning permission to create an extra 70 spaces at its Nyton Road Gospel Hall.

A statement from trustees says the numbers at the church were 100, up to 150, when a planning approval was granted in 2005.

"THese numbers have grown steadily over the years, especially over the last two years, and we now have numbers up to about 750, maybe twice in a three-week period.

"THe room and internal facilities can safely accommodate this number but our parking provision is sadly inadequate, and now both messy and unsafe."

If approved by Arun District Council, the church's parking spaces will total 173.

` Rox Sessions BEATROOT Funk Jazz will be bringing their full brass sound to Bognor Regis tonight.

THe seven musicians will be performing in the latest Rox Sessions event at THe Hothampton Arms in London Road.

THe gig will take place from 9.30pm-11pm, preceded by a rockjazz quartet from 8pm.

Entry is free but bucket donations to the Rox Music and Arts charity are encouraged.

Next Monday, at 7.45pm at the pub, sees the latest open rehearsal session for Mike Mosley's Big Band.

Arrests follow raids around town by police CLASS A drugs have been seized in a series of police raids around Bognor Regis.

Sussex Police said 'significant seizures' of crack heroin were found in the searches, which also took place around London. A large quantity of cash was also discovered.

A total of 12 people from the town were arrested straight away on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.

THey were released under investigation after they had been interviewed by detectives.

A 26-year-old man from London, arrested on suspicion of the same offence, was placed on police bail until tomorrow while enquiries continued.

In addition, a 16-year-old boy from London, who was suspected of being trafficked into West Sussex in order to deliver drugs on behalf of others, has been referred to supporting agencies.

Detective Sergeant Jason Vickers, of the West Sussex Community Investigations Team, said: "We have teams of officers and investigators whose skills are being used to disrupt organised crime.

"THis complex investigation, of a type often unseen by the local public, demonstrates our ability to act locally

and follow up with warrants and drug seizures in London, helping to prevent crime in West Sussex.

"THis operation is part of our continuing work, alongside colleagues from other forces and law enforcement agencies, to combact drug dealers who operate from London by operating special phone lines and taking homes of vulnerable people locally, in order to use as a supply base.

"We recognise the drug dealing seen in the community increases the fear of crime and we will continue to seek to make this area a hostile place to commit serious crime."

News of the raids to disrupt activity aimed at bringing drugs into the area was released by the police on Friday.

It was the culmination of five months of work by detectives.

Since the beginning of the year, they have been carrying out an investigation - called Operation Highwood - which is still continuing.

Five search warrants were executed at residential addresses in Bognor Regis. A further two were carried out in London.

Colourful carnival fun will return to the town's seafront tomorrow PLENTY of fun is in store tomorrow at the Bognor Regis Carnival.

THe return of the annual procession packed with cheers and laughter will take place tomorrow - and will be joined by its first dog show.

Entries will be accepted from midday and the host of classes such as the prettiest bitch, the most handsome dog and the waggiest tail will start at 2pm.

THe dog show will take place on the grassed area at West Park.

THis will be the fourth year the carnival has been staged by the Bognor Regis Carnival Association.

THe carnival parade will form up on THe Esplanade at midday.

Its procession of floats, with a West End

shows theme, will start at 1.15pm and go along Aldwick Road, Nyewood Lane and Marine Drive West into West Park to the carnival showground.

THis will come to life at 2.30pm with the day's official opening and prize-giving for the winning entries in the parade.

Prizes of up to ÂŁ150 will be given for the best mixed bunch group and juvenile and senior groups among others.

A full range of entertainment will then take place in the showground. THe Bournemouth Youth Marching Band, who are leading the parade, will be the first performers.

THe Suzanne Hill School of Dancing and the Wiltshire Army Cadet Force drill display will also perform.

Gary to step out along the coast to help beat cancer

CANCER survivor Gary Broughton is to step out along Bognor Regis seafront to help future patients.

Gary is undertaking a near 30-mile walk to the town just two months after he had a tumour removed from his left thigh.

He will start at Brighton Pier at 9am on June 19 and aims to finish at Bognor Regis Pier about 6pm.

He said: "I'm confident I can do the walk. I'm looking forward to it and I can't wait to do it.

"My doctor says I will be fine as long as I take the walk easily.

"I want to raise funds for Cancer Research UK so other people with cancer can benefit from treatment like I have."

His GP shared his concern and referred

him to the dermatology department at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital last February.

He underwent a biospy and the presence of a tumour saw Gary having an operation at St Richard's Hospital on April 11 under local anaesthetic.

THe surgeon removed both spots and left Gary with a six inch scar.

"I had to wait seven weeks before being told the tumour was benign," said Gary.

"THe report was with the consultant on May 10 but he was on holiday and I had to wait to find out the result.

"I couldn't believe it when I was told I had a tumour. I suffer from depression and anxiety and so you can imagine what it was like for me.

"But I would rather have a six inch scar and still have my life."

Gary hopes his rapid recovery from his health scare is another sign of an upturn in his life.

He lost his job at Butlin's as a restaurant team member and eventually ended up briefly sleeping under Bognor Regis Pier.

He was looked after by Bognor Housing Trust at one of its properties, in Glamis Street, and credits its staff with stabilising his life.

THey found his current bedsit in West Street and Gary has just signed a five-year contract with a modelling agency which he hopes will enable him to get on the property ladder.

Appeal after bank con THIS man is being sought by police after a Bognor Regis women was conned out of £2,300.

Sussex Police has issued these images of him this week as they revealed the details of the crime.

THe victim, a woman in her 80s, received a phone call on April 20 from a man who pretended to work for Barclays Bank.

THe caller told her she needed a new bank card and someone would collect her old card and PIN from her home.

After the cards were collected, a withdrawal by the man in the photographs for £2,000 and a second of £300 occurred from ATMs in the town's High Street.

Police Constable Ryan Spencer said: "If you recognise this man, please contact us immediately.

"THe victim was duped into believing she needed a new bank card after receiving an intimidating

phone call.

"Banks will never ask for personal details, such as a PIN, over the phone and new bank card should normally be sent out automatically.

"Be aware of any fraudulent phone calls and, if you believe the caller is not genuine, simply hang up the phone.

"You can ask for proof of identification for any caller who knocks on your door."

Police have also asked anyone who has fallen victim to a similar crime to also contact them using the same methods.

Hopefully, they will make a positive impact on bathing waters in the district, which is important in terms of the image of the district and its beaches to residents and visitors alike.”

Southern Water undertook a customer survey and identified that bathing water quality was a major concern of their customers. It has been given approval by its regulator, Ofwat, to spend £31.5m enhancing bathing waters.

It identified 21 bathing waters which were not expected to meet the ‘excellent’ standard by 2019.

Of those, Middleton was selected for the programme. “Evidence was found through analysis of water samples in 2017 that dog faeces was contributing, albeit to a small extent, to the contamination of bathing water at Middleton,” said Mr Slade.

A survey found Middleton came second to bottom of the seven beaches in the programme in people’s view of its cleanliness.

Two other beaches – Bognor Regis (Aldwick) and Felpham – have also been allocated funding by Southern Water to support work to reduce litter, bird and dog fouling.

Cllr Ian Buckland (LD, River) said Arun had refused councillors’ requests for many years for new dog and litter bins.

“Hopefully, all this will happen but so, so many councillors have gone on about this and you have waited until the horse has bolted,” he said.

Restrictions on dogs are in place on some beaches in the area.

Well-known husband and wife owners Stevie and Stella Pang have put the blaze that destroyed their restaurant behind them to open a new Chinese food bar and takeaway on the site of the original Jasmine House.

Stevie said it was a huge relief to be able to open once more after the blaze.

Painting could replace pills SOCIAL prescribing is to be launched by GPs around the Bognor Regis area.

THe practice will enable doctors, nurses and other primary care professionals to refer patients to a range of local nonclinical services.

It seeks to involve voluntary and community organisations with activities like gardening, arts and cookery.

THe scheme is said to have been a success in the Adur and Worthing areas where 850 people have benefited from social prescription in the 18 months.

News of the imminent arrival of social prescribing in Bognor Regis was given to councillors on Tuesday.

It was included in details of the latest proposals for community care in the NHS given by its representatives to Arun District Council’s environment and leisure working group. THe plans feature the continued development of the eight local care networks (LCN) across West Sussex.

THe Bognor Regis area is covered by the Regis local care network.

Robin Wickham, the council’s group head of community wellbeing, said: “Regis is also focused on developing social prescribing, building on the going local social prescribing model in Adur and Worthing and is about to go live, managed

by Age UK West Sussex, working with nine GP practices.”

One of the initial focuses of Regis LCN has been tackling frailty.

“THe LCN has been the forerunner for much of the work around fraility, housing its efforts on establishing strong integrated working with multi-disciplinary teams and working with care homes.

“Its focus has been on three core elements of work – integrated frailty at home project, defining the frailty population and collaborative working, and a care home project,” said Mr Wickham.

Rustington GP Dr Mark Lee told councillors the local care networks were seen as a way of tackling the serious problems which the primary care sector of the NHS was facing.

He described the situation as a ‘crisis’ to echo the finding of a study carried out in 2014. It faces the challenges of an ageing population, complex system, funding and workforce.

“THe worst of the four things is the workforce, specially in primary care it is very hard to recruit GPs, practice nurses and healthcare assistants,” he said.

An important part of the changes to primary care will be the creation of three urgent treatment centres in the coastal West Sussex area.

Two will be alongside the existing A&Es in Chichester and Worthing. THe third will be at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital. THis will transform and extend its minor injuries unit to improve access to this type of NHS care. THe new centre will be open 16 hours every day compared to the current 9am-5pm weekday times.

A statement from the area’s clinical commissioning group, which funds primary care services, said: “THese UTCs will be able to see any patient with an injury and illness that is not life-threatening.

“Patients will be able to go to a designated appointment at the centres by calling NHS 111 first and will also be able to walk in if needed.”

Dogs will be putting their best paws forward at annual show WELL-TRAINED dogs around Bognor Regis will have their day this month.

THe annual companion dog show held by Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club is returning on June 17.

THe show will open at 1pm, with entries being taken from 11.30am.

Phil Lewis, the club's press officer, said: "Classes will be held for breed, obedience and novelty, with the Kennel Club good citizen bronze award also being held.

"THis year will see a 'have a go' flyball and agility class for the first time."

THe dog show is taking place at the Bersted Jubilee Hall in Chalcroft Lane

in North Bersted.

Proceeds will be given to the Search Dogs Sussex charity based in Aldingbourne.

It supplies nationally qualified volunteer search dog teams around the clock to support the police in looking for missing persons.

As part of the national organisation Lowland Rescue, all the dogs and handlers of Search Dogs Sussex are assessed before they can join in the searches. THey are also re-assessed every two years to keep up standards.

Entry to the show is free and stalls and refreshments are available.

A YAPTON resident had a clucking surprise when she found four chickens dumped on her doorstep.

She was shocked to open her front door to see the small brood looking back at her.

She contacted the animal rescue service, Wadars, which immediately went along to her address to collect the abandoned animals.

Wadars operations manager Tracy Cadman said: "I guess we should never be surprised about the calls we receive.

"But it's the first one we've had about chickens being abandoned in this way.

"THey are all fairly thin but, other than that, they appear to be quite healthy."

THe chickens were found in the porch of the home last Friday morning. THey had been left there overnight.

THe call to collect them was one of the more memorable Wadars has received among the more than 1,200 calls it gets each year.

"THe homeowner told me she got quite a shock when she got up that morning," said Tracy.

"She could hear this funny noise and looked around the house to find out where it was coming from.

"She then realised it was coming from the direction of the porch and, when she opened the door, got the shock of her life and very quickly shut it again."

Wadars quickly managed to find someone to care for the chickens until they can be given to new permanent homes.

Based in Worthing, Wadars is a leading animal rescue charity and has been providing care and protection for animals of all kinds since 1969.

Its team of animal rescue officers respond to calls from the general public where animals are in peril. More than 60 calls for help a day can be received in the summer. About 50 dogs, cats and other animals are in its care at any time.

Church leader to be speaker for its next breakfast AN INSPIRATIONAL church leader will be the latest speaker at a series of Bognor Regis breakfast meetings.

Mary Dennison will be guest speaker at the next of the popular Cherished events at Opengate Baptist Church.

Her talk at the social event for women will be called The Foolish Things. It will take place on June 23 at the church at 73 Victoria Drive.

Previous speakers since the meetings began last summer have included Fiona

A spokesman for the church said she will ask those present if they felt qualified for the experiences and problems which life threw at them.

She said: "Mary has been leader of THe Bridge Church on Hayling Island for, she says, more years than she can remember.

"She is also a well-known speaker, a teacher and author of Band of Hope and Glory, which takes a delightfully lighthearted look at the Christian life."

Her humorous talk is billed as looking at some of the things she believes once hindered her living life to the full.

She says she has learned to laugh at her own mistakes and, while doing that, she has learned to use the gifts she has been given to help others, particularly women, to value themselves.

THe church has invited all women to go and enjoy a delicious breakfast, listen to Mary and hear news of more events scheduled in the series at the church for later in the year.

School pupils quiz their MP PRIMARY school pupils at a Bognor Regis school quizzed the town's MP about his role.

Nick Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, visited Nyewood Infant CofE School to meet its children and headteacher, Jacqueline Cobb.

He said: "After a tour of the school, I met members of the school council in Year 2 and spoke about working in Parliament, their favourite subjects and what they wanted to be when they grow up.

"I very much enjoyed visiting the infant school and having a look round at what the children are learning in their lessons.

"It was wonderful to speak to the children who were curious about my role as an MP and to learn about their ambitions."

As well as representing Bognor Regis for the Conservatives in the House of Commons since 1997, Mr Gibb is the long-serving school standards minister in the government.

THe school, in Brent Road, has been granted a 'Good' rating from Ofsted in all five categories which were inspected.

It also gained 'Outstanding' in its statutory inspection of Anglican and Methodist schools. It has 258 pupils.

Visitors are out in bloom for an earthly paradise of flowers in city

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk OVER 50,000 flowers in rich colours and sweet perfumes were arranged in Chichester Cathedral over the weekend for the bi-annual Festival of Flowers.

More than 15,000 visitors from across the country travelled to Chichester to witness 80 flower arrangements created by over 240 flower arrangers expressing the theme of this year's festival - "THis Earthly Paradise".

THe theme incorporates plant hunting, botany, horticulture and conservation, and will celebrate plants from across the globe, looking at how they have shaped continents and continue to inspire today’s gardeners and explorers.

THe patron for the 2018 Festival is Emma Bridgewater, British designer and businesswoman, whose distinctive ceramics have a world-wide following.

Emma was delighted to be supporting the Festival of Flowers. She said: "I feel a keen sense of anticipation already for that moment when you step into Chichester Cathedral to find it mystically transformed with the scent, colour and beauty of 50,000 flowers."

To celebrate Emma’s support, a souvenir special edition Emma Bridgewater Chichester Cathedral mug was on sale at the festival fair.

THe Festival of Flowers also showcased several ‘firsts’. THis year brought a new - never seen before - tea rose, ‘Nostalgia’, which was specially designed and grown for this year’s event. THe rose is highly perfumed with creamy blooms that are uniquely edged with cherry red. ‘Nostalgia’ is the creation of accomplished local growers Jonathan and Elizabeth Sawday, from Apuldram Roses.

THe festival also launched nine brand new gerberas - gerberas are considered to be classics among ornamental flowers and these new gerberas have been grown by the internationally known Dutch firm, Holstein Flowers.

THe cathedral’s Ruth Poyner, head of communications, marketing and visitors services, said: "Over the years, the Festival of Flowers has raised much needed funds towards the essential restoration of the cathedral.

"All funds raised this year will support the re-covering of the cathedral’s unique medieval roof, a major project estimated at £5.8 million. So we are incredibly grateful to the thousands of people that have come to experience this wonderful festival.

"Without doubt, they are helping to conserve this building for future generations."

Charles and Sandra Clarke, from Bedfordshire, came just for the festival

after a leisure group they go to had told them about it.

Mrs Clarke said: "We have never been to Sussex before. It's beautiful here. THe flowers are spectacular. All the different colours and flowers - It's so lovely."

Mr Clarke added: "THere are places you go to which you tell your friends about.

THis festival and Chichester is one of those places. We would love to come back to the cathedral after the Festival of Flowers has finished.

"It is a lovely building and it is good they have kept it this way. Our garden at home is maintenance-free, we like flowers but this is like art. Seeing the amount of work which has gone in is amazing."

Patricia Booth and Ailsa Clarke, from Hellingly, came with two other friends for the event for the third time.

Ailsa said: "Every year this festival gets better. It just takes my breath away at how they do it all, they must plan years ahead to get it like this."

Patricia added: "I do flower arranging in my local church so while I am here I will try and get some ideas. I would definitely recommend other people to come here, too. It is so colourful and the money raised is going towards the roof which is really worthwhile."

` Active challenge A CHALLENGE to be active for 5km is returning to Bognor Regis this weekend.

Weight Watchers is relaunching its #WW5kMyWay campaign. One of its local coaches, Sarah Bell, is holding an event today to get an early start for people to become active and healthier ready for summer.

She said: "We'll be meeting at 7pm tonight for go for a 5k walk in West Park. Last year's #WW5KMyWay was a great success. I felt proud to see my members take on this challenge. For many, this was the start to a new healthy habit."

` Plant pots stolen A MEMBER of Pagham and District Residents' Association has warned others to beware of thieves who stole her plant pots.

THe expensive ornaments were full of plants and is sited by her wheelie bins outside her home in Herons Mead.

She went out on a quick visit to the dentist last Tuesday only to find the pots missing on her return.

She passed on her warning through the association's chairman, Ann Rowles.

Louis aims to be world's best TEENAGE boccia player Louis Saunders is the youngest member of the British squad for this year's world championships.

Bognor Regis resident Louis, 16, is juggling training for the important event with his GCSE studies.

He even manages to squeeze in the time to help run a boccia club in what is left of his spare time.

He trains four or five times a week. He plays at school, at home and anywhere else that he can against anyone willing to give him a game. He made his international debut last year.

"I like boccia," he said, "because there is so much to it - when to attack?, when to defend?, what shot to defend, lob? or knock on?

"But you also need the technical ability to pull off your desired shot."

Saunders is the youngest member of the ten-strong squad announced by Boccia UK in advance of the contest with the world's other top teams.

THe BISFed 2018 World Boccia Championships take place at Liverpool's Exhibition Centre August 12-18.

THe Brits will be joined by about 180 other athletes from 32 nations spread across the planet.

THey will descend on Liverpool to battle it out for world titles as well as ranking points ahead of the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.

Helen Nicholls, Boccia UK's recentlyappointed performance director, said: "THe squad is approaching the event with high hopes and confidence.

"While the line-up includes previous Paralympic and world medallists such as David Smith MBE and Stephen McGuire, it also contains athletes looking to

make their mark and deliver significant performances on the world stage, demonstrating a real strength in depth across the four classifications.

"THe British team will face significant international challenges in its mission to leave Liverpool with medals and titles.

"However, each player selected has demonstrated the dedication, skill and commitment required to put themselves in the place where they can challenge for a position on the podium, which is ultimately what elite sport is all about.

"THe next eight weeks will be about ensuring each selected player can enter the championships with the best possible preparation to deliver what they are capable of when it really matters."

McGuire is one of seven Paralympians in the squad. Fresh from winning two gold medals at the Montreal Boccia World Open, he is world number one in the sport's BC4 classification and is aiming to defend his world title in Liverpool.

He believes Great Britain can beat the rest of the world by topping the medal table at the championships.

"It will be incredibly tough," he said.

"We will need to keep our discipline and focus but we have the athletes to do it.

"Britain has the strongest unity I have witnessed over my ten years and counting of being involved in the squad.

"We push each other across every classification on a daily basis and I believe this has led to our success over the past few seasons."

Another squad member, David Smith, can boast four Paralympics medals. THey include individual gold from Rio in 2016.

He added European champion to his long list of titles in 2017.

Centre hosts half-term fun

SIX DAYS packed with activities brought smiles to the faces of thousands of visitors to Aldingbourne Country Centre.

Some 2,800 people joined in half-term fun at the centre until last Saturday to fill the holiday with happiness.

THe attractions they poured on to the site in Blackmill Lane, Norton, to enjoy included have a go archery, living history live shows, talking reptiles, donkeys and the ever-popular Bounceabout day.

Debbie Wells, press officer of the centre's operator, the Aldingbourne Trust, said: "What a fantastic half-term we have had at the country centre.

"THe Wyoming Wild Bunch livened up the bank holiday weekend with their shows and Bounceabout day last Wednesday proved to be yet another success."

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to alert Sussex residents to the signs of slavery.

Crimestoppers, the independent charity, is promoting the common signs of slavery that victims of the abuse share to encourage people to report their suspicions.

THe past 12 months has seen a 175 per cent increase in information received by Crimestoppers in Sussex - with 11 - compared to the four in the previous year.

However, it is believed the crime is still greatly under-reported.

Glenys Balchin, its regional manager for Surrey and Sussex, said: "We want to reassure victims that modern day slavery is something that is taken extremely seriously in this case and make it clear to perpetrators that they will be found and prosecuted.

"Exploiting someone for their labour, forcing them to work, using people as commodities - these practices are abhorrent and we need the public's help to stamp them out."

Modern day slavery often operates in public places. It mainly affects vulnerable people and immigrant populations in industries such as car washes, nail bars and farming.

Signs to look out for include: injury, unkempt appearance with the same clothes and poor hygiene, appearing scared and being under the control of others.

Raising hair miles to fund princess wigs TWO friends from Southampton and London have travelled to Chichester and Bognor Regis and raised over £700 in a combined effort of a haircut and a triathlon.

Rosie Bettles, 26, and a friend, Janine Berwick, 30, have donated 24 inches of hair between them to the Little Princess Trust.

THe charity turns a 12-inch donation into a free wig for a child who has lost their hair to cancer.

It can take between seven and ten donations of hair to make just one wig, so the charity buys more hair that is the same to bulk it out, which can cost around £350.

THis inspired the women to do some fundraising to accompany their hair donation and decided to take part in the Chichester triathlon last Sunday to raise £350 each ensuring a wig can be made from their hair.

Rosie said: "We have always loved having long blonde hair but recently decided it's time to go shorter, and what better to do with the excess than donate it to the Little Princess Trust.

"I had been thinking of cutting my hair to have a change for some time and I have wanted to take part in a triathlon for some years.

"My boyfriend’s parents live in Chichester and supported us before and after the race, plus from all the south coast triathlons this was the one with the best routes and distances.

"When I realised I have enough hair to donate I decided to use the triathlon to fundraise. I mentioned what I was doing to Janine and she got inspired and decided to do it with me. I also did a bake sale at college which raised £120.

"We do like our new haircuts, although it's taking some getting used to as we've both had long hair for many years.

Having less hair certainly made it easier to do the triathlon.

"THe triathlon was very enjoyable, the sun was shining so we had spectacular

Charity's thanks to helpers VOLUNTEERS at a leading charity in the Post area have been thanked for their efforts.

A special event was held by Stonepillow's staff to formally show how much they appreciate the unsung work the helpers carry out towards its aim of helping homeless people.

THe unpaid contributions are made by a team of dozens of volunteers.

Stonepillow chief executive Hilary Bartle said: "Stonepillow would be unable to operate without the help, hard work and dedication of our volunteers.

"We are incredibly lucky to work with so many people who have our clients' best interests at heart.

"Our work would be impossible without the generosity of our dedicated and skilled volunteers, in terms of both the time they give and their commitment to helping others.

THank you so much to all our volunteers."

THe charity's thanks took place during

national volunteers' week, which ran until yesterday.

Stonepillow supports people to make positive changes in their lives and find independent accommodation they can call home. THat help is available all year round and 89 clients will be in its accommodation at any time.

Some of the volunteers have been in their various roles for more than 20 years. THis can include fundraising, bucket collections and staging events.

Stonepillow has 22 properties across Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Its volunteers carry out essential work on them such as gardening and DIY. Stonepillow also has two shops in Chichester and Bognor are social enterprises that receive donations from the public to be recycled. A variety of roles are carried out there by the helpers, from van deliveries and collections to furniture restoration and sorting donations.

` Ultrafast broadband PUBLIC buildings in Bognor Regis are to benefit from the fastest and most relative broadband lanks.

West Sussex and Arun councils are among those in the county to have joined together to install gigabit-capable broadband services.

THe pure fibre network is the next generation of digital infrastructure, capable of delivering unlimited upload and download speeds of more one gigabit a second.

THe network will be built, owned and operated by CityFibre and supported by funding from the government.

Welcoming the contract, Cllr Bob Lanzer, the county council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "By investing in full fibre infrastructure now, we are getting our buildings ready for the future, to benefit our public services, their users and our residents."

THe modern technology will ensure the services and daily business of the county's councils will be more resilient, reliable and at less risk of delay or disruption caused by poor or limited connectivity.

As well as Bognor Regis, the buildings are located in areas such as Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, Horsham and Worthing.

Adur and Worthing council's director for digital and resources, Paul Brewer, said: "I'm delighted to see the consortium of West Sussex councils reach this stage.

"Once it is up and running, it will have a big impact on the delivery of our public services and, as a direct result, our communities as a whole."

A gigabit a second speed is fast enough to enable a TV programme episode to be downloaded in three seconds and a BluRay movie in two minutes.

Film makers win trophy for skills FILM-MAKERS in a Chichester club turned the tables on their rivals in an annual competition.

THe Chichester Film and Video Makers clinched the latest challenge against their near neighbours in South Downs Film Makers. THis year's contest saw the Chichester club win by a point to reverse the result in 2017.

Clive Hand, club vice-chairman, received the trophy from the chairman of the South Downs club, Roy Powell.

A spokesman for the Chichester film-makers said nine members made the short journey along the A259 for the competition.

Its first round consisted of two oneminute films, three from each club.

distance from 31 miles to 40 miles in the hope of reaching our target of £200.

"Fundraising events like these are a great chance for us to come together as a community and make a difference to Aldwick House. Dementia UK is a fantastic charity that makes a huge difference to the lives of individuals and families such as our residents."

THe 2017 bike ride was among several fundraising events to maintain the home's popular sensory garden.

Home's pride in its personal care SUBSTANTIAL investments have been made to improve the care for residents of Chalcraft Hall Care Home in North Bersted.

THe centrepiece of the improvements is a new driveway to the impressive property off Chalcraft Lane.

Sara Whitworth, its manager, said the difference was eye-catching. “It’s all about creating the best first impression we can.

“THe old drive was deteriorating and required upgrading, which we are always committed to doing at Chalcraft Hall.

Replacing it has opened up the entrance to the home and made it safer and easier for visitors,” she said.

“We listened to feedback from our residents’ relatives about the need to improve the old entrance and that’s why the owner made it our big project for this year. It took three months from its planning to its completion, but it was well worth the effort.”

But, as important as initial impressions are, Sara is equally aware standards inside the home - with its 20 patients with dementia – must be maintained to a high standard as well.

their residents’ needs are put first.

Magnificent Masala City!

Indian restaurant is a Chichester gem INDIAN cuisine is a staple of the British way of life. And as such, curry houses are in every town and city throughout the country. Of course, with the multitude of restaurants come the good, the not so good and the excellent.

THe latter category isn't as heavily populated as it could be. But in the Masala City restaurant in Chichester, we have ourselves a gem; a topnotch eatery boasting wonderful dishes and outstanding service.

We were lucky enough to visit Masala City this week in St Pancras. You may remember the venue as the hugely popular Masala Gate.

THat was its former name and it has been rebranded but, thankfully, retains all that was peerless in its previous guise.

THe menu is bursting with taste-tingling temptations. THe restaurant, says its website has "revised its famously inventive curry menu, and gathered together an expert team who are constantly striving to create Indian dishes of the highest standards". THis we certainly found to be the case.

We settled on sharing a mixed starter (chicken tikka, shami kebab and onion bhaji served with a mixed leaf salad) and chicken chat puree (cooked with coriander, fresh tomatoes in a tangy chat masala sauce and served on a crispy fried puree) -- all of it simply divine.

To the main dishes and our selection, after much discussion it has to be said, led us to plump for the murghi torkari and a naga sabwal. Both choices came from a desire to try something different from our regular choices (a chicken madras and a jalfrezi, since you ask) -- and we were delighted we did so.

THe torkari is a home-style chicken dish cooked in special masala sauce made with garlic, ginger and mixed spices; and is spicy and madras hot. Superb, in a word.

Meanwhile, the sabwal, again, was a homestyle hot dish, this time with marinated chicken with mixed spices and naga chilli, delivering an exotic, madras-hot, flavoursome triumph!

`Masala City is a topnotch eatery boasting wonderful dishes and outstanding service...

THe sabwal, we were advised, tastes so much better with boiled rice (correct), while the torkari lends itself to a pilau rice to bring out its flavour (correct again!).

THe choices combined both traditional and fusion cuisine dishes and we would definitely recommend similar selections when you visit. Alternatively, take full advantage of the takeaway service, or have marvellous meals delivered to your home.

Our hosts for the evening told us that "the inventive menu overflows with fantastic regional recipes, as well as some old favourites, collected from all over the Indian sub-continent and beyond then given our unique spin that makes them both unique and unforgettable". You will find no opposition from this correspondent to that succinct overview of an exceptional restaurant with first-rate food.

BREAKING NEWS - FILM STAR JOINS FESTIVAL IT HAS just been announced that Michael Jayston, the star of the Oscar winning film Nicholas and Alexandra, will be joining the Festival of Chichester for Poetry and Music in Chichester Cathedral on Tuesday, July 10, at 6.30pm.

Michael is well known for his many film, TV and stage appearances, including playing Mr Rochester in the BBC TV classic Jane Eyre and Dr Who's nemesis

musical genres.

Originally from Wales, Deborah Rose has sung in the company of Ralph McTell, Judy Collins, Fairport Convention and Jimmy Webb. She has performed on Terry Wogan’s Radio 2 for the 50th anniversary of late singer Eva Cassidy. Her first album, “Song be My Soul” is a collection of words set to music from Tennyson to Blake and features a Welsh Male Voice Choir. Deborah has a rare and timeless voice with a purity often likened to Sandy Denny or Joni Mitchell. She performs a wide range of Celtic music, classics, and her own selfpenned songs that chronicle her travels, love of nature, and journeys of the soul.

Mari Randle is lead singer and writer in Valeyard in the popular SF TV series. He has portrayed James Bond on radio and appeared in soaps such as Eastenders and Emmerdale as well as the longrunning Foyle's War. There is no need to pine after a super food anymore FOR those of you who know me, or have been a client of mine, you will know my love for super foods! I am always on the look out for something new and amazingly beneficial for the body.

I agree that some supplements are great, but the reason, in my belief that super foods excel in the nutrition category is because the body recognises super foods as a food. So it will absorb what it needs. Plus it’s a natural product that will drench each and every cell with goodness!

I have talked a lot about bee pollen in the past, which is an amazing super food that I love for all kinds of ailments. It’s especially good this time of year when hay fever is rife. However, there is

another little gem in the wings that is actually nothing new in the world of Chinese medicine, but is fast becoming one of the best super foods in our western world for its unbelievable health benefits.

THis little gem is called pine pollen.

I have so many clients coming to me with hormonal imbalances around the age of 35 and upward. We are all subject to toxins in the environment that produce estrogen, resulting in potential fertility issues, benign fibroid growths and breast cancer, and both men, as well as women, usually by the age of 50, produce significantly less testosterone. THis is especially true after male andropause and female menopause. However, consuming androgenic foods, like pine pollen, helps to balance these higher amounts of xenoestrogens, balancing both testosterone and estrogen equally, which is highly beneficial.

Generally, pollen extract is not recommended for children and should be avoided by male adolescents, who on average naturally produce healthy amounts of testosterone. Community News & Views MORE than 30 events are taking place across West Sussex to celebrate the work of carers.

THe activities will mark the national initiative of carers' week from tomorrow until next Friday. West Sussex County Council, the NHS in the county and charity providers are joining forces to recognise the vital role that carers play.

THis year's event will highlight how carers can be supported to stay healthy and connected. Among the events are relaxing walks, picnics and coffee mornings in relaxing surroundings to recognise carers have health needs of their own. Some of them will support specific groups of carers. Others will be open to everyone and free to attend for any family or friend carer.

Cllr Amanda Jupp, the county council's cabinet member for adults and health, said: "With the pressures of caring for a loved one, people can sometimes ignore their own health as they focus on caring for family or friends.

"Carers' week aims to encourage carers to look after their own health needs as well as those of their loved ones.

"THe events taking place will offer rest and relaxation and a chance to talk to other carers. But it doesn't stop there support is available all year round through a myriad of excellent organisations such as Carers Support West Sussex."

Information stands at many of the county's hospitals will provide help and guidance for carers. GARDEN lovers are being urged by St Wilfrid’s to give a big green thumbs up this summer to raise money for the hospice.

On Sunday, July 8, between 2pm-4pm, the hospice will open their gardens and hold the annual Rainbow Day for the last time, before they move to the new hospice in Bosham in 2019.

Staff at St Wilfrid's welcome all bereaved families and friends to come along on the day to celebrate memories of their loved ones.

THere will be activities, stalls, music, refreshments and entertainment for all the families and the traditional rainbow cards will be available should you wish to dedicate a special message to a loved one. Not forgetting the beautiful dove release, in memory of those no longer with us.

St Wilfrid’s Open Gardens 2018 season will close with the award winning gardens at Elmleigh on Saturday and Sunday, August 18-19, between 10am-5pm, at 54 Elmleigh, Midhurst, GU29 9HA. Majestic pines and two ponds teeming with tadpoles will be the star attraction at this child friendly and dog-on-leads welcoming garden.

“We have some brilliant gardeners locally and this will provide the perfect day out this summer,” said head of fundraising at St Wilfrid's, Jerry Doyle. “THere will be plenty of tea and cake on offer too!”

Every week, a class of children from St Philip's Primary School work on the school grounds in Growing Club. THey are supported by local residents from Arundel Allotments. THe children help weed, plant and maintain the flower beds and in the summer flowers are planted and fruit and vegetables grown.

THey keep strictly to their colour palette of red, white and blue even with their hanging baskets.

A SERIES of amazing vidoes about the RAF delighted aviation enthusiasts in a Chichester-based group.

THe films were shown to Air Aces, the Arun and Chichester Air Enthusiasts Society, by the RAF Presentation Team.

Among the audience were members of several Sussex RAF air cadet squadrons as well as Air Scouts from the 1st South Bersted troop, some of whom are pictured above.

During this year, Air Aces will work closely with the Southdown Gliding Club to sponsor two days for their young cadets to gain experience in low level flying, particularly take-offs and landings.

THe other charity which Air Aces will support in 2018 is

the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

THe next Air Aces talk is THe History of Modern Air Ballooning, with speaker Don Cameron.

His company, Cameron Balloons, is a leader in the industry. His talk will give members a fascinating insight into the specialist balloons the firm has built for high-altitude and space flights.

THe talk will be illustrated with spectacular photographs and will start at 7.30pm on June 18 at the Chichester Park Hotel, Chichester, PO19 7QL. Admission is £3 members and £5 guests. Tickets are available on the night.

FUNDRAISERS for a children's hospice hope to make an anniversary run a record breaker.

THis September sees the 15th staging of the Littlehampton 10k as the Chestnut Tree House hospice also marks 15 years of caring for children from across east and west Sussex and southeast Hampshire.

Last year's run, pictured below, saw a best-ever 1,450 people take part and raise about £50,000 for the hospice.

Lauren Gowing, the hospice's events fundraising, is hoping the 2018 staging on September 9 will be even more successful.

She said:" THe Littlehampton 10k is very special as it was our original fundraising event, which has been running as long as we have.

"Even longer in fact, as the first Littlehampton 10k took place in September 2003 - before two months before Chestnut Tree House officially opened its doors on November 11.

"In our 15th birthday year, we'd like to encourage everyone to make every moment count. Now is the time to take on a challenge and help us so that we can continue to help local children with life-shortening conditions and their families."

One that will be taking part along Littlehampton promenade with a hoped-for 200 runners and £20,000-plus fundraising target is Team Essie.

It will be led by Lorna and Steve Cobbett, and inspired by their triplet daughter, Essie, who passed away last August.

THe team members, dressed in bespoke red T-shirts, played a prominent part in last year's Littlehampton 10k with 119 runners to help the hospice which Lorna described as a 'place that is very close to our hearts'.

Chestnut Tree House patron Tim Breden has also set himself a target of raising £12,500 with a group of friends. THey are calling themselves Team TAF and are training together to get fit and to fundraise.

Lauren added: "We need to raise £6,850 every day to pay for all the specialist care services provided by Chestnut Tree House, both at the hospice and in families' own homes."

THe run attracts a range of participants from individuals and groups of friends to corporate groups and running clubs.

THey include keen runners pushing for a personal best to people taking part in fancy dress as both experienced and firsttime runners come together.

UKULELES await those who would like to perform at this year's Southdowns Folk Festival in Bognor Regis.

Free taster sessions in the four-stringed instrument are available for anyone who fancies strumming away at the festival in September.

THe sessions, with free ukuleles from Mike's Music Workshop, take place from 10.30am-midday on June 20 and July 18 at Bognor Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane.

Called Making Your Mark, they are ideal for those who would like a new challenge to tackle during the summer.

THey have been backed by £10,000 from Awards For All as well as the county council.

THe folk festival, pictured above, has become a popular fixture around Bognor Regis each September. THis year's festival, from September 20-23, will feature the first Southdowns Ukulele Festival as well as the traditional lineup of professional musicians.

A WILDLIFE haven was brought to members of Donnington Gardening Club through its speaker, Lawrence Holloway.

Club member and well-known local naturalist Lawrence stood in at the last moment to replace the advertised and absent speaker for the June meeting.

He entertained his fellow members with excellent photographs and stories of his nature-filled garden. Many butterflies visit during the spring and summer. THey include speckled wood, orange-tip, brimstone, and large and small whites, as well as red admiral and peacock. THe mosaic of habitats in the garden include two ponds, which attract various dragonflies such as large red and blue-tailed damselflies.

Visiting hoverflies include Merodon equestris, the females of which lay their eggs into daffodil bulbs. Better mannered are the colourful marmalade hoverflies, which prey on aphids.

One evening recently, Lawrence returned home to find a rather scare moth on the kitchen window. After taking several photographs, he moved away for a moment. When he returned, he found the moth had flown up to a nearby security light where it had been swiftly despatched by a false widow spider.

Despite a difficult spring, Lawrence's garden is just about under control with its planting of many insect-friendly plants.

THe club's next event will its summer show at 2pm tomorrow in the parish hall. Its next regular meeting will be there at 7.30pm on July 6, with Richard Moorey talking about policing.

Vanished terrace became seafront car park A range of businesses filled space now occupied by vehicles OCCASIONALLY, just one picture can start you off on a trail for information and answers, and one such was a view that is no longer with us, but which presents the viewer with such a different perspective of THe Esplanade.

THerefore, we shall look at the area between York Road and Clarence Road, which once consisted of open meadows and today is the site of the Regis Centre's car park.

THis area sported a terrace befitting any seaside resort, that of Colebrook Terrace.

Construction began on September 24, 1824, at a time when there was much development being achieved throughout the town. Lady Colebrook, whose family had represented Arundel in Parliament, laid the foundation stone.

A press report of the time remarked ‘it is anticipated by the ensuing year many first rate residences will be completed for the reception of the distinguished visitors to this delightful watering place'.

THe crescent, that contained four stuccofronted buildings, was named after Sir Edward Colebrook, Baronet, of Barn Rocks, Aldwick. It was originally named New Crescent and over 300 men worked on the major construction.

THe designer of the terrace was Samuel Beazeley Jnr, who also built the THeatre Royal in Dublin, and was also responsible for the remodelling of the Drury Lane THeatre, the Royal Lyceum and the façade of the Adelphi in London.

By 1828, all the buildings in Colebrook Terrace were owned by Andrew Sorrell. THe terrace consisted of such memorable buildings as Highbury, Canonbury, Colebrook, Eversley, Clarence Hotel and THe Pennington Hotel, and we shall turn our attention to these individually.

If we have a look at the 1881 Census we find reference to some of these buildings. For example, Highbury House is recorded with Mr Tyler, coachman, his wife and their two children.

Charles Barlow is shown as the owner of Highbury with his wife and two children. Julia Lawford is shown as the owner of Canonbury House. Colebrook House’s occupants were

George Fishbourne, a Baptist minister and his wife, their children and their domestic servant.

THis terrace of buildings continued for many years as private residences and, therefore, very little reference is made to them during this period.

Starting at the west end we first come to Highbury House, No 1 Colebrook Terrace.

In a 1923 town guide it was advertised as a board residence, which was ‘working towards Christian Temperance Principles'. THe proprietress was a Miss Mable, and the terms at this time were 2 to 3 guineas per week (£2.103.15).

as under the new management of Mr and Mrs Leslie Mable. THe advert went on to say they offered separate tables, midday dinner, liberal and varied menus, with electric light being provided throughout at no extra cost.

Highbury House also became well known as the Highbury Tea Gardens with their sunken tea garden, which could cater for up to 1,500 people with a covered area where 'thousands' of children and others could 'come again', according to the advertisement. Another advertisement declared it provided 'cold luncheons with 500 seats under cover, plain teas in three large shelters also meat teas'.

Next was Canonbury, also No 1 Colebrook Terrace, which was a boarding establishment in 1933. Its telephone number was 1000, and you could send telegrams to “grams: Canonbury House, Bognor” a far cry from today’s emails.

Interestingly, it also advertised the advantage of electric light, with terms from 2 guineas to 8/6d (£2.10-42.5p) per day, with children being received as 'a pleasure'.

THen came Colebrook School at No 2 Colebrook Terrace, which was established in 1886 as a boarding school for boys, by William Grice. He was the chairman of Bognor Urban District Council at that time, having been a teacher at a school later named Northcliffe on Upper Bognor Road. He also was to lay the foundation stone of the town hall in 1932.

One particular advertisement before the First World War provides a different insight, by explaining the accommodation allowed for 30 boarders, 30 day pupils and that the inclusive fees ranged from 30 to 40 guineas (£31.50-£42) per annum. THe aim was to provide a good

sound commercial education with successful pupils achieving success at the College of Preceptors, Cambridge and civil service examinations. THe school eventually moved to the corner of Annadale Avenue and finally to Neville Road where it closed in the early 1960s.

Next came Eversley School for Girls at No 3 whose advertising announced it accepted girls who were the daughters of ‘trade’ families, which was quite unusual at that time. In 1907, this school had as its principal Miss Keed and a 'residential staff of English and foreign mistresses and visiting professors' who assisted.

THeir aims were to provide high class ‘modern education for girls', combined with ‘careful training and the comforts of home life'.

THe final pair of buildings were shown as No 4 Colebrook Terrace of the Royal Clarence Hotel and the Pennington Hotel. Miss Elmslie ran the Royal Clarence Hotel from 1905 to 1928 exclusively for children accompanied by their nurse, or nannies. By 1934, the hotel was advertised as the Hotel Clarence and commented that it was the 'Bognor Regis leading family hotel'. THe hotel extolled the virtues of hot and cold water in rooms and that some rooms even had gas fires. THe Clarence Hotel had 40 bedrooms and separate tables were provided, if required. THey had their own car park, and as considered themselves to be ‘centrally placed’ so visitors were able to partake in a variety of activities and amusements.

In a 1907 town guide, the final property Pennington House had an interesting advert.

Mr H Newnham Travers would receive the 'sons of gentlemen' and his aim was to 'prepare them for the public schools and the navy'.

Bognor Tone Zone's Simon Gill takes PostSport the race honours in the Cowdray 10k BOGNOR Tone Zone's Simon Gill took the spoils as he led the pack home in the Cowdray 10k.

THe race last weekend was one of three to take part on the Cowdray Estate near Midhurst - a 5k, 10k and 10k Canincross.

Gill was among a cohort of 17 Tone Zone runners to tackle the off-road 10k course, thriving in the muddy conditions to finish in 1st place with a time of 37 minutes 39 seconds. It could have been even better for Gill who also had a little fall during the race.

Another to run well was Duncan Stephenson-Gill, who had shaken off his marathon legs to finish the tough course in under 45 minutes. THe ever improving Jessica THomson was the first lady home for the club, finishing just ahead of fellow runner Tony Holcombe, both running under 50 minutes.

Sean O’Donnell sneaked under the 1 hour mark with an impressive 56:39.

Running in the Canicross 10k were Debs Pacey, Lisa Robinson and three of their fourlegged friends. Pacey and Robinson finished the Canicross in 1:06, a very impressive performance from all.

THe other race for Tone Zone last week was

the Worthing 10k.

A total of 29 runners took the short trip along the south coast for the race which was in warm conditions.

THe first three home for the club were Gill, who recovered well from his mid-week triumph, to record a time of 34:32.

Second home was Peter Lee, carrying on from his fine form so far this year, crossing the line in 37:10. Sean Power was the third club runner home, the youngster who never stops improving finished in 40:55.

Despite a lot of runners struggling in the heat, Adam Norgett thrived and set a new personal best with a time of 45:15. Coming back from a couple of months off was Carolyn Stapley who crossed the line with club mates Kate O’Connor and Karl Hayes in 52 minutes.

Catriona Power, who’s still trying to get under the hour mark, just missed out this time, crossing the line with Lucy Brand and Michelle Lloyd in 1:01 and 1:02, just ahead of Lea Hodgkins and Rachel George After the race, the club said they were delighted to see so many runners from this year’s beginners group carrying on from their impressive performances at the Bognor 10k.

College academy is a 'roaring success'

PRODUCING the rugby stars of the future that's the aim for those behind Chichester College's rugby programme as the academy completed its first season.

More than 60 players have turned out in the blue and yellow in the past year which has been the first since it was unveiled as one of 21 RFU Focus Colleges.

With the aim of supporting player development, Steve Woolcombe, Chichester College’s director of rugby, said he has been delighted with the first 12 months.

Mr Woolcombe said: "It has been an exhilarating first season and the academy has gone from strength to strength.

"Back in September, we set upon the task of building a robust infrastructure to enable students across the college to benefit from the experience of being part of a rugby academy - from excellent coaching and equipment to a well-structured season, I am delighted to report it has been a roaring success.

“We were over the moon to see more than 60

students - male and female - across a variety of courses sign up to join the squad, reflecting the diversity of students we have here at Chichester College.

"We have several players that continue to play for Hampshire or Sussex and many of our girls are playing in national finals, with Aliya Seehawong representing the South East Regional Squad.

"Our success without doubt is down to the support from the RFU. As a focus college, we receive annual funding and coaching support for the next three years, which has guaranteed our status."

THoughts are already turning to next season, when kit will be provided, including international standard rugby posts.

An overseas training camp to Spain and Portugal is also being planned along with camps for junior players looking to progress.

An open trial for the college will take place on August 29 with more than 120 people expected to turn out.

BOWLS: It's been a mixed week for Bognor Bowls Club with the Waterloo Square team still finding their stride.

THere was success for Bognor Ladies, who played their second game in the Game, Set & Match League against Middleton, who were promoted to the first division last year. Bognor won on both rinks scoring 6 league points.

THat winning form was matched by the men who defeated Middleton in the PC Cup. Bognor won on two rinks and lost on two but overall won by six shots, progressing to the next round.

But there was disappointment in two other competitions as the men played Tarring Priory twice over the weekend.

In the division one match on Saturday, they only won on one rink, scoring two league points. On Sunday, they played Priory in the National Top Club competition. Bognor’s Bob Daley won the four-wood singles, but Bognor lost in the two-wood singles, pairs and fours. THe triples did not continue as Tarring Priory had won three of the five disciplines.

In the second division, Bognor B played Witterings. THey won on two rinks and lost on two but won overall by four shots, scoring six league points.

Bennison's patience pays off as Priory Park defeat Heath

Smith is new Ladies' boss NEW Chichester City Ladies manager Aaron Smith says he cannot wait to get started as he looks to help the FA Women's Premier League South club progress on and off the pitch.

THe 38-year-old joined the Oaklands Park side in September, 2017, as Matt Wright’s assistant manager.

With the former manager stepping away from the dayto-day management to help the club stabilise in the third tier, Smith has been offered the chance to step up to the top job.

Despite the season ending just a few weeks ago, the new gaffer has his sights set on the new campaign - with pre-season schedules and assembling a new backroom staff top of his in-tray.

Smith said: "My first job will be to build and strengthen the squad, not just the first team, but also the development squad.

“We have worked hard to improve our training facilities for the new season and the contact time with coaches has also increased drastically."

Smith joined Chi after previous spells working at Southampton Women and Portsmouth Ladies.

After joining as Chi assistant just nine months ago, he played a vital role in their maiden season in the third tier.

He helped the club to an eighth-placed finish in the league as well as a run to the fifth round of the FA Cup. Smith said: “Since joining Chichester, the first thing I realised was how amazing the volunteers are.

"We don’t have the finances of other clubs, but this doesn’t matter to our volunteers.

“THey give hours of their own time, unpaid, in order to help this club reach our target of playing in the Women’s Super League.

“I have fallen in love with this club and its values.

"I hope that I can take Chi up to the next level while maintaining the community feel and the togetherness that is evident to see on matchdays."

He added: "It’s still sinking in really. For me to be asked to take over the reins is a huge compliment and I want to thank everyone at the club for giving me this opportunity.

"To now have this opportunity means the world to me."

CHICHESTER Priory Park will be looking to keep the wins coming after registering their first victory in four last weekend.

Matthew Geffen's side welcome mid-table Ansty to Goodwood tomorrow (12.30pm) off the back of a morale-boosting 57-run win against high-flying Haywards Heath.

After suffering two losses on the spin, Chi knew they could afford no slip-ups in what is proving to be a very competitive Sussex Division Two league.

After being put into bat, Priory struggled to get going and were quickly reduced to 154. But a patient 53-run partnership between Matthew Bennison (56) and Simon Hasted steadied the ship and helped the home side to a total of 131 for 9 off their 45 overs.

It did not look enough - but then Heath did not count on Chi's bowlers pulling out an impressive performance.

Led by Daniel Joseph (5-14 off seven overs) the Priory attack never let the visitors settle.

THe opening salvo from Joseph saw Heath reduced to 21-5, something they never recovered from as Geffen (1-6 off nine) and Joe De La Fuente (1-16) never let them settle.

THey ended 74 all out giving Chi an easy win.

Middleton out to bounce back

MIDDLETON CC will be looking to banish their batting woes as they look to drag themselves off the foot of the Sussex Premier Division.

Sean Heather's side have been far from their best when out in the middle so far this campaign, failing to register a score above 200 in their five league matches.

THose woes continued last weekend when Middleton were defeated by nine wickets on the road at Preston Nomads.

Heather's XI will be hoping they can find their form tomorrow when they welcome

mid-table Eastbourne to Sea Lane (12pm).

With things tight in the Premier Division, Middleton know that a 30 point victory could see them leapfrog over the visitors - but only if they can get their batting sorted.

Last weekend's match at Nomads summed up their campaign so far.

After being put into bat on one of the best squares in the county everyone but overseas player Mahesh Rawat struggled to get going.

THe Indian's 69 off 63 balls was Middleton's only score of note as they were eventually dismissed for 149.

In reply, the Nomads' opening pairing of Nathan Poole and Daniel Phillips made light work of the target, putting on 144 for the first wicket.

In Division Two, it's fourth versus third as Bognor welcome Billingshurst to the Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm).

Ryan Maskell's side will be looking to bounce back after losing out narrowly to THree Bridges last weekend.

After electing to field, Bognor's bowlers led

by Josh Sargeant (3-39) did well to restrict the home side to 160 all out.

But Regis struggled with the bat with only opener Charlie Laforet (40) really standing up to the Bridges bowlers. Bognor were eventually skittled out for 99, losing by 61 runs.

Elsewhere, in Division THree West, Pagham will be looking to end a three-match losing run when they head to second-placed Goring.

Stuart Hanks' side have struggled in recent weeks and were soundly beaten by seven wickets at home to Slinfold last time out.

After being put in to bat at Nyetimber Lane, opener Jack Stannard (27), Ryan Barratt (34) and Hanks (28) all got starts but were unable to push on as Pagham were dismissed for 158 in the 45th over.

In reply, an excellent opening spell from Pagham's Barbados-born Rico Webb could not halt Slinfold's march to the total. THe West Indian took 3 for 45 in his nine overs but it was not enough to prevent a seven wicket loss.

Pagham snap up the prolific Gaskin PAGHAM'S pre-season preparations have got off to a flying start after prolific frontman George Gaskin signed for the club.

THe Lions are taking some time out after an excellent season which saw them finish third in the SCFL Premier and reach the last four of the Sussex Senior Cup. Keen to better that, chairman Tony Shea is moving fast - securing joint-managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds for another year before confirming that Gaskin will be in the white and black at Nyetimber Lane next season.

THe former Littlehampton Town striker has a formidable track record at county league level. In recent seasons he has won the SCFL crown with the Golds and Shoreham.

Last season he re-joined Littlehampton part way through the season although his 14 goals were not enough to save them from the drop.

He then signed for THree Bridges, helping them to second-place and promotion to the Isthmian South.

Gaskin is set to form an imposing frontline for Pagham along with Dan Simmons, who scored 50 goals in all competitions last year.

Elsewhere in SCFL Division One, Daren Pearce's rebuilding work at Selsey continues.

THe former Sidlesham manager has raided his former club to add Dan Bassill, Joe Leggatt and Harry Agostinelli to the Blues ranks.

With club man Jack Cavell and 17-year-old midfielder Jamie Williams also signing on, things are progressing fast at Selsey.

Pearce on to forward thinking after the Rocks re-sign Block BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says the club is in good shape ahead of the new season - despite no strikers yet signing on at Nyewood Lane for next year.

THe Rocks are very much in rebuilding mode after their relegation from National South back into the Isthmian Premier.

THeir ranks were boosted in the past week with the news that teenage midfielder Tommy Block had committed his immediate future to the club.

THat took the summer signing spree to ten - with defenders Doug Tuck, Corey Heath, Keaton Wood, Chad Field and Calvin Davies joining midfielders Harvey Whyte, Tommy Scutt, Harvey Sparks and Dan Beck in the Bognor ranks.

More new signings are expected soon - with the emphasis expected to be at the business end of the pitch.

Pearce said: "THings are generally going well, we are in a good place. We have signed very well defensively although we're still perhaps looking for a left back to upgrade there.

"We are quite happy with the midfield balance but we need to now focus on the forward area which always takes time."

It was up front where Bognor struggled last season, scoring just 41 goals in 42 league matches in the past campaign.

But, despite having no strikers on the books, Pearce was relaxed about finding the players

needed to fire the Rocks to success.

THe veteran manager admitted that much depended on whether Jimmy Muitt and Ollie Pearce committed their futures to the club.

He said: "You have to bear in mind that we're trying to find a balance. THere is no point in signing the players we have if we don’t get the players to turn those chances into goals.

"I think Ollie and Jimmy will score at this level but we also need to think about a physical presence. Once we know where we are with them, we can think about other options.

"We are talking to both this weekend so we will be in a better position then."

Another player from last year still to commit is goalkeeper Dan Lincoln, pictured left, who is thought to be waiting for offers from clubs closer to his home in Reading.

Pearce said he hopes for some clarity on the keeper's position in the next couple of weeks.

One player who was persuaded to stay was Block, 18, who rejected offers from elsewhere to re-sign for his hometown club.

Pearce said: "Tommy has a bright future ahead of him in the game and we hope that he will continue to develop under our tutelage.

"He deserves lots of credit for his performances last season. We should remember his age and that he played most of the season for us in a tough league in a side that was relegated.”

Team is spirit shining through TEAM spirit - it is a much-vaunted quality that sports teams often claim to have but few actually do.

But when it comes to Bognor Regis Town Football Club, you do not have to look far to see that turning out in the white and green means an awful lot.

At this time of year, when players are deciding on their immediate futures there are many factors on the table. One thing that is common for all those who have signed for Bognor, is that playing for the team and the fans is a real selling point, particularly for those who have history with the club.

Even for teenager Tommy Block, who had offers from elsewhere, the midfielder was clear on his reasons to stay at Nyewood Lane.

Speaking to the club website, Block said: “One offer was for more money and at a higher level so it was tough to turn down but also easy to commit to Bognor.

“At my age I need to play as much as possible and I think I will get the opportunity to do that at Bognor. Despite being relegated last season, there are lots of positives at the club and I hope to continue to learn from Jack and Robbie Blake, who is coming in as coach.

Plus, I just love playing for the Rocks fans."

CAN you believe that it's now more than a month since the football season ended?

Sure, there was little to celebrate this year for Rocks fans. But the relegation back to the Isthmian Premier has failed to diminish a positive feeling around Nyewood Lane.

A host of summer signings, plus the addition of former Portsmouth coach Robbie Blake in the dugout, have helped build a real sense of optimism around the club.

But what goes on between now and the start of the season? In part two of our guide to the preparations for the new season we tick off some of the work that's going on behind the scenes at the Nye Camp.

What really goes on at the club when the season ends?

THe truth is that, for the small team of volunteers who keep Bognor Football Club running, the hard work starts now.

Signing of players, financial accounts, securing of sponsors, arranging of preseason friendlies and a general spring-clean all takes a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

THen there is the small matter of making sure the ground is in top shape for the year ahead.

Will there be any improvements to the ground in the next few months?

In short, yes. You only get one of the best pitches at this level in the country by investing a lot of TLC and the occasional bit of money in the turf at Nyewood Lane.

As is usual this time of year, the club has invested between £2,000 and £3,000 in getting the turf seeded. Doing it now gives the grass a chance to get growing in time for the year ahead.

As for other work, the club are looking to install a new toilet block on the far side of the ground next to the Wednesday

Stand. THe rest of the terraces will given a good tidy up along with a lick of paint to make sure they look good for the first week of August.

Looking beyond opening day and plans are being discussed to create a new cover for 250 people at the club house end of the ground.

It is likely that this work would take place during the season rather than in the next couple of weeks.

How can we get involved?

THe club is always on the lookout for volunteers to help them keep on running.

THe most important need is for someone who has a background in accounts to take over some of the financial management at the club.

But manager Jack Pearce says there is always work for those that have a few hours to give to get involved in the club.

What about the players?

When do they return to preseason training?

While the squad is still far from complete, Jack and new first team coach Robbie Blake will be putting the players through their paces from the first week of July.

Sessions largely led by fitness coach Neil Cockroft will run Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the run up to the new season.

And when can we see them in action?

THe Rocks' first pre-season friendly is on Tuesday, July 17, at home to Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s (7.45pm).

Further matches against Horndean (away 20/7), Portsmouth (home 24/7), Salisbury (A 27/7) and Gosport (A 3/8) are also planned.
