Roger Caplin, the owner of Electair Exports, said: “We have continuous days when nobody comes into the estate.

“We are losing all our customers because they are saying they can’t get in and they will drive somewhere else.

People will move out.

“We have a good estate with a nice mix of businesses, who all gain from each other. But we can’t get deliveries.

“We have experienced the situation

where delivery contractors have turned up with goods one or two days late saying they can’t get into the estate to deliver.”

Yeomans Nissan is another of the companies affected by the situation as demand for the tip has clogged up the estate's entrance.

Mark Peters, its general sales manager, said: “It’s getting to the point now where I think the traffic situation here is dangerous.

“THe queues on Saturday mornings can be past Sainsbury’s. People who don’t know the area, or who are in the wrong lane, could easily pull straight out into the traffic. THere’s going to be an accident here shortly.

“I can’t understand how this situation is allowed to impact on our businesses.”

Abseil tackled in memory of mum BRAVE family and friends of a Bognor Regis woman who died from a brain tumour have abseiled to raise money for research into the condition.

Gareth Bridger and Stuart Brown, the husband and brother of Rachel Bridger, raised more than £2,000 for Brain Tumour Research.

THey climbed down the UK's tallest sculpture - the 114.5m high AcelorMittal Orbit in London's Queen Elizabeth Country Park - to mark the first anniversary of Rachel's death.

THey were joined by two of Rachel's friends - Laura Dabbs, from Northchapel, and Midhurst resident Simon Greet.

Gareth, 40, said: "It was a big challenge to complete the abseil but it was something myself, Stuart, Laura and Simon were honoured to do for this important cause.

"We want to raise money for Brain Tumour Research with the hope that other people will not have to go through what Rachel did.

"It is only by raising funds into the research into brain tumours that there is hope of a cure.

"Ultimately, it would be incredible if, when my kids are adults, there is a cure to this awful disease."

Mother-of-two Rachel, 36, began to complain about painful headaches in March 2017. Two months later, she experienced two seizures.

One of them sent her into a coma and resulted in her being put on life support.

It was only then she was diagnosed with

a glioblastoma - a highly aggressive brain tumour - and passed away the next day.

Rachel worked as a healthcare assistant at Petworth Cottage Nursing Home and left behind her two young children, Ollie, 11, and Lily, six, alongside her husband.

Laura, 28, said: "I was inspired to raise funds to prevent others suffering the way that Rachel and her family did.

"THe abseil was a huge success and it was great to see so many people supporting us and raising money for this great charity.

"It was so awful to see Rachel and her family suffer, and there are so many other families that have to go through the same.

"Rachel was such an amazing friend and her loss was truly devastating.

THe money raised by the abseilers will go towards Brain Tumour Research's pioneering network of dedicated centres of excellence where scientists are focused on improving outcomes for patients and, ultimately, finding a cure.

Janice Wright, the charity's community fundraising manager, said: "Brain tumours are indiscriminate. THey can affect anyone, at any age, at any time.

"We are extremely grateful to Laura, Gareth, Stuart and Simon, and are pleased they had such a successful event.

"We hope they have inspired others to consider holding their own events, helping us to spread the word about this terrible disease."

FORMER service personnel have been invited to take part in a parade at this month's Armed Forces Day in Bognor Regis.

THe parade of serving and veteran members of the forces, as well as cadet groups around the town, will be one of the highlights of the latest of the annual celebrations of the Armed Forces on June 16. THose in the parade will march off from the seafront bandstand at 12.30pm to the pier ready for a drumhead service at 1pm.

THe event's press officer, Sue Holmes, said: "THis is a call to any ex-service personnel who would like to take part

in this event.

"THe Armed Forces Day committee would like to invite members of the public, who have previously served in any of the armed forces, to join in this parade and be part of our event."

THe day's events will take place around the pier and Waterloo Square gardens.

THey will begin at 11am with stalls and displays and stage entertainment.

After the drumhead service, Veterans' Badges will be presented and the HMS Barbara memorial stone in front of the pier will be re-dedicated. Further displays and entertainment will also take place.

Underground site is brightened up by art f Creating the word 'create'

f The young artists at work in the subway STREET art has come to a Bognor Regis subway.

A group of young people has created its first artwork with the help of the town council.

THe 18 individuals have turned a blank painted wall at the B2259 underpass by Hotham Park into a masterpiece.

THeir talents - helped by street art practitioner Sarah Gillings - have seen the wall transformed by the word 'create' in colourful letters which are 7ft high and stretch over 39ft.

THe aspiring artists - who have also called themselves Create - were involved in the spray can painting on Wednesday and yesterday.

THey included the two original members, brother and sister Annabel and Edward McMullan, of Felpham.

THey attended on both days.

Annabel, 12, said: "We're with other

people our age and can make friends here. We can fit in with people who have the same interest as well.

"THe subway was quite dark and scary before but it's going to be bright and colourful when we have finished."

Edward, 14, said: "It's good to get out and work with others as a collective effort towards the same goal.

"We have all been working together to come up with ideas which symbolise each of the letters."

THe word 'create' details a young person's initial years in life - childhood, realisation, experimenting, attitude, transition to adulthood and end achievement of a job or further studies.

Sarah, who led the work on the two seafront murals opposite the pier, said: "I like to create art which has a social benefit. THat's the case here with these young people, who might not have

had anything to do over the half-term holiday.

"THe beauty of working underground is that you are not dependent on the weather. You can give a definite time when the work will take place and not let anyone down.

"THe paint fumes do build up a bit more, though. So, everyone has been having regular breaks in the fresh air."

THe project was co-ordinated by the town council's youth worker Keely Hardy. She said: "I'm now working with 18 young people.

"THis is all about allowing them to have a vision for the future, encouraging community cohesion and to empower them to have a voice and influence over their town."

Create is meeting from 5pm - 7pm on Wednesdays at the Phoenix Centre in Westloats Lane.

` Ex-mayor leaves FORMER Bognor Regis town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall has left the Liberal Democrats.

Cllr Woodall became a member of the Conservative Party today.

He said in a statement: "THis will in no way affect my work as a Bognor Regis town councillor and I will still be representing Orchard ward to the best of my ability."

He declined to add further details to the statement. As reported, Cllr Woodall's year in office ended last month.

He was elected to Orchard ward in May 2015 with the second highest number of votes - 843 - of the four councillors chosen.

His change still leaves the Lib Dems as the town council's biggest group on five councillors but makes the Conservatives the equal second biggest, with the Independents, on four.

` Valuation event ANTIQUES and interesting artefacts can be valued for free at Bognor Regis Museum this month.

Auctioneers Henry Adams have joined forces with Bognor Regis Local History Society to stage the event from 1pm-4pm on June 21.

It follows the popularity of the first occasion last year.

Expert Andrew Swain will cast his eye over the items, a maximum of two for each visitors, which are taken along.

If the owners decide to sell them, Henry Adams will donate its usual 15 per cent commission to the museum in West Street.

Park protests are criticised A LEADING Conservative has claimed most Bognor Regis residents want the planned linear park.

Cllr Phil Hitchins heads the Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee of Arun District Council.

He said the opponents of the £3.5m scheme were unrepresentative of public opinion and were just wasting time and money in continuing to object to it.

"I have received many emails and comments on how much residents appreciate what is going on in Bognor Regis - so many I have lost count.

"THe silent majority want regeneration and want it now, not in three or four years' time," he said.

"After all this exposure, I have not received even one - yes, not one comment or email saying the new park is not wanted.

"So (the opponents) should stop wasting Bognor Regis taxpayers' money and let us get on with the job.

Regeneration is working for all of us."

THe Hothamton linear park scheme is proposed by Arun to create a new public open space on the site of the current car park off Queensway and sunken garden next door.

THe new park is intended to cater for a variety of uses for adults and children, with a play area, adult gym, cafes and a potential boules pitch.

Water features, public seating and cycle routes could also be included.

Opponents of the linear park claim it

will have less green space and less car parking spaces than the current areas.

THe Liberal Democrats are holding a public meeting at 7pm on June 21 at the Jeneses Arts Centre in Linden Road to rally opposition to the ambitious plan.

As reported, one of the Lib Dems, Cllr Matt Stanley, said they wanted to give the public a platform to voice their concerns about the project and to share their thoughts and provide input into a community-led alternative for the area.

He and his fellow councillors also intend to launch a petition to request that Arun immediately stops the linear park project.

But Cllr Hitchins said: "I am dismayed that a handful of disgruntled political activists and town councillors are attempting to disrupt and stop the regeneration of Bognor Regis, claiming they did not know enough about it.

What a load of old tosh.

"It has been publicised for the past year in newspapers, articles and even the BBC news.

"I have written about it on many occasions. In April 2017, September 2017, November 2017 and February 2018, my articles were distributed to about 14,000 households across Bognor Regis.

"In the spring edition of Arun Times, distributed to in excess of 70,000 households, there was a full page dedicated to the new park. If that's not publicity, what is?"

Rainbows help to add colour to brighten town's park for summer RAINBOW girls have played their part in making a Bognor Regis park more colourful.

THe young members of the Guides movement aged 5-7 carried out some community planting in an area of Hotham Park that needed some TLC. THey were joined by the outgoing town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, for the session.

Rebecca Vervecken, the mayor's secretary, said: "THe girls were fantastic and bought their towels and spades along to really get their hands dirty.

"THey sprinkled wildflower seeds, which, hopefully, we will see blooming

in the next couple of months."

She also reminded keen gardeners around the town that entry forms for the annual Bognor Regis in Bloom and pumpkin growing competitions are available.

Residents, schools and businesses of the six town council wards of Bognor Regis can find the entry forms on the town council's website - bognorregis. gov.uk - under the 'Our Town' and 'In Bloom' headings.

Hard copies can be collected from the town hall in Clarence Road for those who would prefer an entry on paper.

Businesses want action to stop queues harming trade

But the present situation dates back to October 2016. West Sussex County Council cut opening hours at its waste amenity sites to save money to help it cope with a reduction in government funding.

GTR Auto Bodies owner William Gustar is a director of Arun Business Park. He said: “THere’s been flytipping occurring when the waste site is closed.

“We’ve always looked after this estate and we want to keep it together. Otherwise, it will go downhill and look like a bomb

A county council spokesman said it had reverted to earlier opening after speaking to the traders last year to reduce the early morning queues.

"Earlier opening (8.30am weekdays and 9am weekends) has largely resoled the issue of queues building up prior to opening. We have also created bigger bays (on the amenity site) making it easier for visitors to reverse into the allocated

parking bays so that traffic can flow through the site more efficiently," she said.

"Historically, there has always been a problem with queuing at peak times of the year so we encourage users to come later in the day to avoid the mid-morning peak.

"THe site is open until 6pm Saturday through to Wednesday until the end of September. Our busiest months are between April and June and pressure usually eases afterwards."

AN APPEAL for information has been made by police about an apparently distressed girl seen in Rose Green.

Sussex Police received a report about 7.35am last Wednesday, May 23, after a young girl was seen to be distressed in a car in Rose Green Road. It was reported the girl, who was thought be about ten or 11, was being restrained in the car by a passenger - a white man - before it drove off at speed towards the Lower Bognor Road roundabout.

THe car was described as large and dark red, possibly a 4 X 4, and girl was white with long dark hair.

Detective Sergeant Alan Fenn said: "We have been investigating this report and have been liaising with local schools in the area.

"THe child has not been identified despite numerous enquiries.

"We would appeal to any person who witnessed this incident or who has information regarding the possible identity of the child to make contact with us."

` Necklace stolen A NECKLACE and a bracelet were stolen when two vehicles parked in Blakes Road in Felpham were broken into overnight on May 20.

A vehicle parked in Jacken Close, Felpham, was raided overnight on May 25 and camera equipment was stolen.

Scams warning events GET WISE to the lies, Bognor Regis shoppers will be told next week.

Arun and Chichester Citizens Advice service and West Sussex Trading Standards have joined together to help people know they have been conned. THe first events will take place next THursday in Tesco, in Shripney Road, Bognor Regis, followed a week later at Tesco Extra in Chichester.

THe final display will be staged at Morrisons in Hawthorn Road, Littlehampton, on June 28. All of them take place from 10am-1pm.

Luca Badioli, the chief executive of the Citizens Advice in the area, said: "'Don't miss a trick, be scams aware' is our message to people.

"While there might be new scams cropping up all the time, the tactics of scammers remain the same.

"From getting contacted out of the blue to being pressured to sign up to a deal on the spot, our events will reveal the tell-tale signs of a scam that people need to keep an eye out for.

"While all of us can have the bad luck of being targeted with a scam, we hope this event will stop

more scammers from running off with people's money."

THe staffed displays are part of this year's scams awareness month - a national campaign which encourages people to report and talk about the risks and experiences of being conned.

People will learn about the common signs of a scam, such as receiving an offer that sounds too good to be true or being told to pay an advance fee for an item or service.

Attendees will also be encouraged to report scams so that the police can take action. Advice will also be given on how to try and get back any money that has been stolen.

Joining the displays for the first time will be West Sussex County Council's community wellbeing and safety service to help to raise awareness about online scams and being safe online.

New strip will help team tackle rivals A NEW kit could kickstart football at a Bognor Regis school.

THe smart playing outfit was unveiled at Edward Bryant School at an end of season celebration.

Its players from Years 5 and 6 proudly posed in their red shirts, white shorts and black socks.

THe 16 sets of kit were provided by one of the pupil's parents, Stephen Turner, on behalf of Solutions Roofing.

Year 3 teacher Andrew Goodman, and one of the school's football coaches, said: "Our previous kit was a bit hand me down and was looking ragged.

"THis new kit has refreshed and

rejuvenated the team. If the players are putting in the hard work, they have got to look the part as well."

THe London Road school had some success last season with a semi-final appearance in a competition between Bognor Regis and Felpham schools.

One of the players, centre-back Isaac Love, ten, said the new kit could help them go one step further next season.

"THe texture of the new kit is quite good," he said. "It's easier to run in so you can move better in it. Playing centre-back is important for the team because you get the tackles in and get the ball up the pitch as far as you can."

TOWN councillors in Bognor Regis have agreed to investigate saving one of the town's landmark buildings.

THe Bognor Regis Town Council members unanimously agreed on Tuesday to looking into the viability of trying to return THe Royal Hotel to its former glory.

THe building on THe Esplanade is up for sale with planning permission to convert it into 18 luxury flats.

Glenna Frost, the town council's clerk, said: "THe council, through their corporate strategy, are committed to preserving the glorious heritage of our town and have a strong track record of doing so.

"If successful, it is hoped that THe Royal Hotel will be brought back into use as a boutique hotel and even include training facilities for new chefs and other related staff for this industry.

"THe council is also exploring the possibility of it being used in part for new council offices and to include space for

community use."

THe Royal Hotel was built in 1888 and enjoys a fantastic location on the seafront which overlooks the sea.

It is a three-storey building with cast iron balconies and rails at the bottom of its window cills, and a row of classic Doric pillars at the entrance porch.

THe hotel was designed by architect and surveyor Arthur Smith. He was also responsible for the Picturedrome cinema and the Reynolds building in the the town centre.

Councillors are keen to repeat with the hotel their success with the cinema. Since they bought it in 2010, the venue has had a third screen added by its operator and building work by the council on a fourth is set to be finished this month.

THe Royal Hotel has been empty for several years. THe town council is keen to hear people's views about its decision.

"THey will be placed into one band higher than their assessed need. THis means if they are assessed as band C then they will be uplifted to band A." She said the allocation scheme also needed to be changed to take account of the new legal definition of homelessness.

A statement in the scheme, backed by councillors, says: "THe council is committed to offering an element of choice to all those seeking housing, enabling people to make well-informed decisions about their housing options referred to as 'choice based lettings'.

"Available vacant properties are advertised for applicants to place 'bids' for properties which are suitable for their needs and in their desired location."

ARMED forces personnel are to be given priority for council housing in the Arun district.

THe individuals who have an urgent housing need will be moved up a band in Arun District Council's housing allocation scheme.

THe change was agreed by the cabinet members of the council as part of a package of alterations to the scheme.

Cllr Gillian Brown, the council's leader, backed the recognition of the work for the country carried out by serving and veteran soldiers, sailors and airmen.

"THis is a very comprehensive document but also very straightforward," she said. "I am pleased that we have recognised the armed forces within it.

Council residential services' cabinet member, Cllr Trevor Bence, said: "THis is for the benefit of armed forces personnel."

THe higher priority applies to former members of the regular forces and serving members who need to move because of a serious injury, medical condition or disability sustained as a result of their service.

Bereaved spouses and civil partners of members of the regular forces leaving services' family accommodation after the death of their spouse and partner will also be given the accelerated treatment for a new home.

` Request for land LANDOWNERS across the Arun district have been asked if they want to develop their site.

Arun District Councl is preparing several planning documents which will allocate land for homes.

THese documents need an extensive amount of evidence to support them. THis includes a technical and theoretical database of sites which have been identified and assessed for their potential to accommodate future housing or economic development.

"As part of this review, the district council is inviting a 'call for sites' for potential land within the district that can acccommodate five or more additional new dwellings.

"So, if you are planning to develop land within the next five years or in the longer term, please let the council know," said a spokesman.

` Carers' tea party A TEA party for carers is being held at a Bognor Regis surgery.

THe social occasion will give carers who are patients of Maywood Surgery or those who care for a patient of the surgery a chance to meet other carers and also seek help from the carers health team if it is needed.

THe party is being organised by the Maywood Surgery Patient Group and will take place from 2.30pm4pm next Tuesday at the surgery in Hawthorn Road.

A spokesman for the group said: "THe surgery recognises the very important role played by carers and also how difficult the role can be."

New chairman is chosen for Arun A NEW chairman has been elected for Arun District Council.

Cllr Alan Gammon received the chain of office from the outgoing chairman, Cllr Jacky Pendleton, at the council's annual meeting.

His vice-chairman for the coming year will be Cllr Pat Dillon (C, Pevensey).

Cllr Gammon (C, Brookfield) announced at his reception after the meeting that his chosen charity would be Shopmobility in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. A raffle at the reception saw him ÂŁ400 for the good causes for his initial fundraising.

He is a trustee of the Littlehampton scheme and has a wealth of council experience around the town. THis has included two stints as the town mayor.

He said: "I'm looking forward to my year as chairman, representing this district at a variety of events and

meetings as a civic ambassador, raising funds and awareness for Shopmobility and also to be a fair chairman of council meetings and matters."

His successor, Cllr Mrs Pendleton followed handing over the chain of office with the presentation of funds to her charities from her year in office.

Her hard work enabled nearly ÂŁ4,000 to be handed to Home Start Arun and ChallengeU. THe tireless efforts she has made included a zip wire challenge, a civic service at Arundel Cathedral and a masquerade ball.

She said: "It has been an absolute privilege to serve the Arun district as chairman this past year.

"I have been honoured to attend some fantastic events and meet so many new and interesting people. Raising money for my chosen charities has been wonderful."

Scouts stage surprise party A GUARD of honour of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts surprised a Bognor Regis couple celebrating 50 years of marriage.

THe couple, David and Sue Shimell, whose anniversary is today, were totally overwhelmed by the unexpected gesture at their celebration party.

THey have devoted their time and marriage to children and have three sons as well as adopting two others.

THey have also served Bognor Regis Scouts for more than 80 years combined.

THeir golden anniversary party was held by 2nd Bognor Scout Group, where Sue

is the Group Scout Leader.

David is her assistant and is also the quartermaster of the group and the Bognor Regis Scouting District.

THe party was hosted by a team from 2nd Bognor Scouts led by Carol Quinn, the group's chairman.

More than 50 people attended. THey included two of David and Sue's sons and two grandchildren.

Current and former Scout Leaders from around the district were also present to enjoy the company and cakes which were on offer.

Town's parkrun is out of this world as winner Mark does his homework PARKRUNNERS in Bognor Regis are seeing stars.

THe entrants in the popular weekly events have covered a distance – 192,445km- equal to a journey halfway to the moon.

THe 270 who turned out for the fourth anniversary run at 9am last Saturday added to that total for another successful session in Hotham Park.

THe first runner home after the 5km circuits was Felpham resident Mark Steven in 17min 45secs. THe 26-yearold was putting his studies for a PhD in exercise psychology into practice.

He said: “Coming first is not the most important thing here. THis is my 30thsomething Bognor Regis parkrun and I’ve come first before.

“It’s a lovely, friendly feeling at parkruns. You can go to any one of them anywhere and you know the people there will welcome you. It also gets you out of bed first thing on a Saturday morning.

“Part of my course involves studying how to get people motivated to run. I did a study on parkrun, looking at the importance of groups.

“Parkruns are excellent events. A parkrun has an identity and that helps to motivate people to keep participating.”

THe anniversary run was the 201st to be staged since the first on the last weekend of May 2014. Since then, 5,502 runners have joined in.

THose at the anniversary event included first-timer Claus Capes, 56, of Bognor Regis, who finished in around

32 minutes. Unusually, he made his London Marathon debut first in April.

“I entered the marathon for the Children with Cancer UK charity. I completed it but it killed me. It was so hot and I ran out of water but I was determined to finish and I’ve raised £2,600 so far.

“I then did the Bognor Prom 10k road race on May 19 and, when I was there, someone told me about this parkrun.

“I’ve lived here for seven years and didn’t know about it – but I’ll definitely be back. It really interests me in keeping fit.

“I work in a cake factory and I can eat cake all day long if I wanted, which doesn’t help in that respect.

“THe park is a nice place to run in. It was hot at times in the sun, without any wind, but then you would go into shady areas, which was nice."

One of the parkrun’s founders, Ben Bowers, was the race director last Saturday in addition to his role as the event director.

He said: “I thought the parkrun would still be here four years on when I helped to start it – but I didn’t think it would be as successful as it has been.

“THe number has increased up to about 300 runners a week. It has dipped lately because we’ve had to cancel a few runs because of work in the park and events taking place. But I’m expecting the numbers to pick up again now.

“Taking part in a parkrun is all about the community and the spirit of the

occasion. It’s open to everyone, it’s free and it’s first thing on a Saturday morning to get it out of the way. Everything about it is simple.

“I don’t see any reason why it won’t continue for another four years. THe numbers will level off now but it has made running accessible to so many different people.

“I know a lot of people have started off here and then gone on to 10k races and longer distances. One, Anita Watkins, didn’t do any running before she came here and is now going to be taking part in her first ultra marathon this year.

“Parkrun has changed the image of Bognor. Wherever you drive around the town, you see someone running. THat never used to be the case.”

Being part of the parkrun network saw visitors from Newcastle, Horsham and Margate among those joining in last week. Previous participants have taken part during holidays from the USA, New Zealand and Australia.

But there was only one Wonder Woman at the anniversary – and that was Felpham resident Josie Fagetter. As well as the race’s milestone, she also celebrated her 50th parkrun in a year and completed it in 23:52.

Her 11-year-old twin son and daughter also ran.

THe University of Chichester worker said: “Parkrun is lovely because you see someone you know all the time."

` Junior parkrun THIS Sunday's junior parkrun in Bognor Regis is being taken over.

THe town's Cubs, Beavers and Scouts are predicting a record turnout for the 2km event at 9am at THe Arena sports centre in Westloats Lane.

THe usual organisers have invited the young people to stage the occasion to enable them to gain the experience they need to undertake one of the Scouting movement's badges as well as find out about a junior parkrun. THey will also be volunteering.

THe run for 4-14 year-olds is free to enter. Anyone taking part is asked to take cash for the refreshments.

Day brings arts to the park A WORLD of imagination was created to celebrate books in Bognor Regis.

THe town's annual book day returned to Hotham Park and saw creativity take centre stage around the bandstand.

THis year's theme in the Bognor Regis Town Council-run event was based on the books of Steyning author, Julia Donaldson, of The Gruffalo fame.

Four of her stories, including The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child, were featured in hourly storytelling sessions on the bandstand.

But all types of children's books were popular at the book swap. Among those who took some volumes in and picked up others was Felpham resident Graham Chamberlain and his two older bookloving children.

"THey read an awful lot of books but, once you have read a book twice or three times, there's no point in reading it again and so we've got a lot at home.

"I'm training to be a teacher and I think anything that encourages children to get away from their computers is a good thing."

One of his daughters, nine-year-old Katie Chamberlain, said: "When there is a good book, I know the character.

"I like book series because I can follow the characters through them. My favourite is Tom Gates by Liz Pichon."

THe big art tent was also popular.

Amelia Windell, five, had made a giant ladybird watched by her mum, Kelly Ladlow, 36, from Felpham.

Kelly said: "It's good to have something in the half-term where kids can go and money is not a factor.

"Kids love arts and crafts. It's fun, it's messy and it's creative. THere's kids from a really young age up to their teens here."

Other popular attractions were the 7.5m high climbing wall, donkeys, a collection of reptiles and THe Funky Playbus with its superslide and ball pool.

Town council events officer Kirsten Fitzpatrick estimated some 3,000-4,000 people had gone along to Wednesday's event.

"I think the cloudy weather today, and the heavy rain yesterday, has put people off. It's our fifth year of holding this event and Julia Donaldson was the choice of people when we asked which author should be celebrated," she said.

"We had 12 children take part in the fancy dress competition and we've had other Julia Donaldson-themed activities as well."

THe town council also took the chance to publicise its Playing Out initiative. Parents will be given the materials and road closures so children can play outside.

Park becomes a wonderland ALICE in Wonderland has moved into a Bognor Regis park.

THe famous character by Lewis Carroll has taken up residence in Hotham Park in the form of a giant wooden sculpture.

She has been joined by her companions, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts to complete a trail of the skilfully-created oak features in the popular open space.

THe trio were brought to life by chainsaw sculptor Simon Groves thanks to the success of the Hotham Park Heritage Trust's country fairs.

THe sculptures were unveiled on Sunday - and Alice fan Mollie Lane, six, gave them her approval.

Dressed as the Queen of Hearts, she said: "I like stories. I have read them quite a lot of times and I like the sculptures. I like everything about them."

She and her family travelled from their Bosham home for the unveiling on one of their regular visits to the park.

Alice was revealed by Arun District Council chairman, Cllr Alan Gammon. He told the some 100 people at the ceremony: "I am very pleased to be carrying out this unveiling.

"Many years ago when my children were knee-high we got an awful lot of enjoyment out of this park - and there is much more here now than there was then.

"It's nice to know you are enjoying the park even more than we did."

THe trust was founded in 1998 to protect the park's heritage for future generations in partnership with Arun.

To date, the trust's volunteers have

contributed £100,000 towards improving the amenities in the park.

THe three new sculptures are the latest of these projects and join the Mad Hatter's Table unveiled at Easter 2017.

Deborah Northcott, the chairman of the trust, said: "THis is the final stage of our Alice in Wonderland trail, which was the product of the past two country fairs, having been identified three fairs ago by children as their preferred choice.

"THey add a bit of interest to the park.

THey are something that draws the eye to bring people to the park."

THe new sculptures cost £9,500 in all to add to the £9,000 for the Mad Hatter's Table from the profits of the 2016 and 2017 country fairs.

Sculptor Simon Groves said : "I am really pleased with the sculptures. It's not everyday I get to do work like this.

"It was one of most unusual projects. It's good they are fictional characters because that gives me some leeway rather than being tied down to real life."

He spent ten days creating Alice, five days on the White Rabbit and seven on the Queen of Hearts. Alice stands 8ft tall and weighs 1.3 tons, while her companions are about 5ft 6ins and weigh just under a ton.

THey are all created from drawings on the raw wood on which Simon uses chainsaws, from 4ft diameter downwards, to create front and side profiles. He puts them together and adds the details.

THe Suzanne Hill School of Dancing and THe Bard and the Troubadour THeatre Company also entertained those present.

ORGANISERS of a special school reunion in Chichester have been encouraged by the initial response.

THe event is being held on October 20 to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of Chichester High School for Boys. It will take place at the current school.

Clive Sayer said there had been a great response to the announcement of the occasion.

"However, the Old Cicestrians are still keen to contact more former students and staff whether they left last year or 60-plus years ago.

"Even if someone can't make it on October 20, their memories - and any photos, videos or memorabilia they can lend - would be really appreciated," he said.

AN EXTRA £540,000 is to be spent

by West Sussex County Council tackling potholes.

THe funding is on top of the extra staffing announced last month, which has helped to repair 11,000 potholes so far this year.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the council's cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "THe extra £540,000 is great news and further proof of just how seriously we take the pothole problem in West Sussex and that we have listened to residents and how important they feel this issue is."

GENEROUS Bognor Regis women’s darts players have donated thousands of pounds to charity.

THe members of the town’s winter darts league marked its 50th anniversary with the bumper help for two good causes.

THe £1,000 donations to both Tyler’s Trust and Ashley Place were presented at the league’s annual meeting last week.

Tyler’s Trust was set up in 2010 by Barnham resident Tyler Murphy, then aged 12, to provide treats for young hospital patients and was inspired by his experience having treatment for a brain tumour.

His mother, Janice Ellis, told the darts players: “Tyler would like to say a huge thank you to everyone of you.

“His main message about his charity is that it will keep going. It will not get bigger geographically but we are going to do more and more for local families who have terminally ill children.

“THey really need people rooting for them and that’s what Tyler’s Trust does.”

Ashley Place in Bognor Regis is run by the Livability charity for 16 residents with physical and intellectual disabilities. It will put the money towards a new minibus for them.

One of the residents, Claire Needs, said: “THe money that everybody has raised for us will make a massive difference.

“It will give us reliable transport for everyday things like doctors’ appointments and hospital appointments.

"It also makes it a lot easier for things like family visits and holidays and things like that.”

Darts league celebrations GOLDEN touches celebrated a special occasion for women’s darts players in Bognor Regis.

THe trophies presented at the 50th anniversary presentation night of the Bognor Regis Ladies Darts League were covered in gold dust and the glasses awarded to many of the individual winners were engraved with gold writing.

THe league’s chairman, Lyndsay Steege, said: “THe girls have kept the league going for 50 years and the fact the league is very much a family. It’s all about going out with the girls and having a laugh.

“We have lost a few pubs over the years but we have amalgamated the teams and kept them going.

“We could do with more younger players. Some teams are down to the bare minimum of six players.

“THe men’s leagues don’t seem to have a problem with that but men’s darts gets a lot more publicity than we do. We don’t get a mention at all.”

THe presentation night took place in the Riverside Caravan Centre’s ballroom last week. A host of awards were lined up for the winners from the 180 guests present. THe tables had decorations which marked the 50 years the league has been playing on Monday nights.

THere are 24 teams, down from 32, as the number of pubs has shrunk. THey are split into three divisions rather than the original two.

She turns out weekly with the Newtown Sports and Social Club’s ‘D’ team. She said: “I’ve been playing for about 31 years in the league and it’s some 40 years since I started playing darts.

“It’s a night out with the girls and I enjoy them every week.”

One of her team-mates, Linda Burley, who won the Division Two indidivual’s cup, said: “We worked in a factory, Tam Transformers in Durban Road, and that’s how we got Rene started in the league.

“My mum and dad had a dartboard when I was about ten and I used to play on it.

"I started playing properly when I was

18 and I’m now 52. I enjoy going out each week and having a bit of fun.

“We get on well. I want to be playing darts when I’m 98 like Rene.”

THe trophies were presented by popular top darts player Scott Mitchell.

THe British Darts Organisation number three ranked player made his second appearance at the event after being the special guest in 2016.

“I’ve really enjoyed coming back. You are the best presentation night I have done,” he said. “It’s down to you girls.

THis league is going to keep going for another 50 years in my opinion.

"A league is only as good as the people who run it and you ladies are absolutely amazing.”

HISTORICAL fiction writer Rosemary Noble is hosting a talk on crime writing by authors around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Bognor Regis-based Rosemary will be joined by three other authors at the event next Wednesday.

Michael Parker and Helen Christmas - both from Bognor Regis - and Sidlesham-based Isabella Muir will be appearing at Writing Crime for Fun and Profit.

THis is taking place at 7.30pm at THe Steam Packet in River Road, Littlehampton.

Rosemary said: "Come and listen to these popular authors talk about how they got into crime writing and listen to passages from their books."

Also hosting the evening will be humorous author Patricia Feinberg Stoner, who is based in Rustington.

All five authors are members of the CHINDI association of independent authors.

THe event is a forerunner to four events being held for the July Littlehampton Arts Festival

by CHINDI. THese are a crime writer's panel, a panel about selfpublishing, a ghost walk and a quiz.

` Cycle stolen A SCOTT Park aluminium mountain bike has been stolen from a shed in Crimsham Road in North Bersted.

THe Scott Parker aluminium bike was taken overnight on May 23. It had a black bottle cage with 'SWE' written on it, two 'Hope' stickers close to its seat and a 'Hope' light bracket fixed to the handlebars.

THe frame was grey with highlights in bright green.

On the right track with change in train times f Students with Florence Hubert

Interest rates get pupils interested BUSINESS students could bank on the economic facts they were given at a new workshop at Felpham Community College.

Florence Hubert, the deputy agent for the Bank of England in central southern England, covered interest rates, inflation and other matters of national importance.

She explained to the Year 10 GCSE business and Year 12 A-level business students about the central role played by the Bank in economic matters.

She said: "Students had prepared the session with their teachers. THis made for a great session, with lots of interaction and team work, discussing how a change in interest rates affects us in our daily lives."

Her visit was part of a new education programme launched by the Bank.

College curriculum leader for business and vocational studies Paul Darbyshire said: "THe event was a big success and added to student's knowledge of real life economic and banking situations."

Jade Leeson, a Year 10 business student who attended the workshop, said: "THe workshop was really interesting as the lady running it gave us lots of examples of what the Bank of England is involved in.

"Looking at interest rates and profit and loss was all relevant to what we are learning in class and it was good to be given more examples and practise how things work out."

RAIL passengers have welcomed the changes to their train times for Chichester and Bognor Regis.

THe wholesale changes brought in by Southern Railway have brought benefits, particularly for those commuting to London.

THe previous one return service from Bognor Regis to London Bridge each weekday and the single one-way only from Chichester have been replaced by two return services from both stations an hour apart on Mondays to Fridays.

Chichester city councillor and secretary and treasurer for West Sussex Rail Users' Association, Trevor Tupper,

said: "Our members are pleased to see these improvements. As for performance, the new timetable is working well.

"I have been out on Southern on most days this week and every train has been on time.

"Looking at the overall picture, every train timetabled for Chichester ran as planned and very few were more than five minutes late.

"THis is a much improved performance to that experienced before and we hope it will continue."

For the past 20 years, West Sussex Rail Users Association had been pressing

for improvements in the connection with London Bridge as an alternative to London Victoria.

THere have been a few other changes to the services that affect some students at the high school and the college in Chichester.

THese have added a few minutes to some journey times, but have reduced others.

THe Sunday service to London has changed from Chichester. It will now be routed via Horsham and the Bognor Regis service rather than Worthing.

THis should mean the trains were less crowded, Mr Tupper added.

No need to feel anxious about being depressed I HAVE had such a good response to the talk about anxiety, stress, fatigue and depression that I am delivering next Monday at ‘Everyone active’ (Westgate leisure centre, in Chichester), 6pm9pm, with two other experts in their field.

Steve Neale is a psychologist and hypnotherapist and has had years of experience on this subject.

I talk with him at many corporate events all over the world, and as I mentioned before it is very rare that he is in Chichester. It’s a massive treat that he is giving up his time to be here, and talking about such important information that can really save and change lives.

Jemima Eames is our EFT expert (emotional freedom technique) who is going to be sharing some amazing tools and techniques on how to

combat such feelings of anxiety and depression, and teaching us how to break down old habits and barriers that are controlling lives.

Anxiety and depression can happen for many different reasons, but the word 'burnout’ is often something I use in my clinics almost daily. I would class this as extreme exhaustion because somebody lives long-term in a way, which is fundamentally against his or her nature. THe real ‘treatment’ of burnout in the medical sense of the word is therefore often combined with a fundamental insight and changes in behaviour helping the person live life as they really wish to live it. THey learn to align their treatment with their deeper fundamental ‘existential’ life project.

THe person answers the question 'What do I

want?' for themselves and then lives accordingly. To some extent one could see burnout as an extremely strong ‘alarm signal’ which the body and mind give us to say: 'Stop and change your life, because if you continue this way, you may die'!

So if you see it from that angle, burnout is a ‘friend’, warning us it is high time to make a change in life.

Stress is, in itself, something positive in nature.

Stress helps us respond quickly and adequately in life-threatening situations so that we can survive. If a tiger plans to eat you, stress will help you to flee more quickly or to fight for your life.

Acute stress at certain points during a week or month is a good thing. When the ‘triggers’, which cause stress, happen too frequently (e.g. every text message, phone call, e-mail, communication which can focus our attention on something negative) our stress system becomes exhausted and inefficient.

If stress is chronic, we end up in a vicious cycle of negativity and exhaustion, and can lead to

depression, anxiety or fatigue.

Depression helps us to do less, to take a break.

Anxiety is the typical feeling which helps us create a distance from something, which instils fear in us. Fatigue, too, makes us slow down. At least it does, when we listen to our body and do not force ourselves through it.

Our Western work ethic does however make it so that we force ourselves through this and no longer listen to these useful (but sometimes unclear) signals. We use willpower, caffeine, nicotine or pills to force ourselves to go on, and if we continue with this for a long enough period of time, we are punished by the real, medical burnout.

THe same mechanism, which caused a chronic overproduction of cortisol and adrenalin, unfortunately also is responsible for our immune system, our response to infections and our general immunity. After long-term overloading of this system, it becomes deregulated and we are more vulnerable to outside attacks by, for example, bacteria, viruses or cancer cells. Even worse: this deregulation even makes it so that we start attacking ourselves. Internal infection mechanisms could for example start attacking our vascular walls, causing arteriosclerosis. THis can lead to heart attacks, brain damage, and many other health problems.

So, this is in fact a serious problem that we need to address in our society. It’s extremely important to keep your physical and mental health on track in order to live the life you really want.

Life is for thriving… not just surviving.

I'VE BEEN up at Lords this week for my ritual dose of humiliation as the English fellows seemed to capitulate and appeared to be brandishing a form of willow that does not always connect with the ball!

So let us concentrate on wine instead and off I duly headed to my local Aldi Chichester store in search of some competitively-priced tipple.

In terms of white wines, for an outlay of just £4.79, I was able to procure a Chardonnay Pays D'Oc which turned out to be crispy and fresh with juicy white fruit, had a slightly creamy texture and overall was light and refreshing - a good buy at this price.

My next selection, for an extra twenty

pence expended, was that of a Hardy's Chapter and Verse Chardonnay and you may be surprised to know that a certain THomas Hardy (I thought he was busy being rather literary, but that is undoubtedly another story) set sail from Devon in 1850 for a new life in Australia buying his first vineyard three years later.

THis wine is a nice soft Chardonnay with pineapple and citrus flavours with a creamy finish and is eminently quaffable! My final white wine selection, for a lofty price of £6.29, was that of a 2017 Exquisite Collection Picpoul De Pinet, a wine which has rightly become flavour of the month, and this one proved to be crispy and dry, herby and lemony and did not lack texture - an ideal accompaniment to shellfish or just enjoyed on its own!

For just £10.99, the Monsigny Brut Champagne continues to exceed all expectations - give it a go at this enticing price!

In terms of red wines , I opted for three under five pounds and one scaling the heights at £5 69. Amazingly, the 2016 Cuvée Réserve Côtes Du Rhône Villages, for a meagre outlay of £4.29, is a veritable gem being soft with crunchy fruit and

ripe tannins and one it is worth aerating for a while! For £4.99, the organic 2016 Toro Loco Superior failed to disappoint being of eastern Spanish provenance and the crazy bull title gives a hint as to the earthiness and juicy nature of this

most quaffable of wines.

For the same price, the 2016 Animus Douro made from port grapes in downtown Portugal is pleasingly smooth and fruity and totally belies its pecuniary value. It is soft and rond en bouche with rich black fruit to the fore and a hint of

spice and one to savour, in my humble opinion.

My final selection of a 2013 Antiguo Barrel Aged Red oozed red fruit flavours along with tobacco and cigar box aromas and oak spices and would pair well with lamb. Te veo pronto!

WITH the two tone cedar shingles complete, and the gabion stone walling freshly washed, the new Aldingbourne Trust building in the Aldingbourne Community Centre looked stunning in the early summer sun.

Inside, the march towards completion is very evident with painters, decorators and plumbers hard at work and electricians installing the last of the lighting units.

THere is a reassuring hum from the plant room as the mechanical systems have all been commissioned and final commissioning of the electrical systems are well underway.

THe building passed its pressure test last month with flying colours.

With the block paving complete at the front of the building, the road brush arrives next week in preparation for Tarmacking of the entrance road.

To make sure the floors are completely even a latex selflevelling compound (sometimes called latex screed or mortar) helps smooth over areas that are not level.

THis is usually done before painting, tiling, or carpeting a subfloor. A self-levelling floor screeding compound contains latex because it has the flexibility to move evenly without cracking.

Once it is prepared, mixed and poured it will flatten out across the uneven floor and naturally self-level because of gravity‌with a little help!

Despite its name the compound is not entirely self-levelling as the surface tension can restrict spread.

To overcome this, the mixture is pushed around the floor with a trowel and spikey roller and the compound will gradually run down any slopes to form its own level in the hollows. Work can continue with the project with little disruption as latex only takes a day to dry.

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure the country centre continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development.

A NEW chief executive has been appointed to a charity which helps homeless people in the Chichester and Arun districts.

Hilary Bartle will lead Stonepillow just as work on its new hostel in Bognor Regis nears its completion.

Hilary, pictured above, said: "I feel very privileged to be part of Stonepillow.

"It reflects the core values and principles I hold by delivering high-quality services which empower and enable those who are homeless or vulnerably housed to achieve independence and wellbeing.

"I am excited about taking on the role of chief executive with Stonepillow at a time of such positive change and strengthening the strategic working with our statutory, voluntary and corporate partners in order to deliver a broader range of effective and proactive services for our clients."

Hilary brings a huge range of knowledge and experience

LEADING Bognor Regis Rotarian David Cousins has received recognition for his community work.

Mr Cousins is the president of the Rotary Club of Bognor Regis and has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship. THe award is made to a person for outstanding service to their community over many years.

Club spokesman David Stemp said: "THe presentation was made at a dinner at Bognor Regis Golf Club made

She has spent 35 years delivering, commissioning and strategically planning housing, homelessness and housing-related support services.

One of her previous roles was in Whitehall as the deputy director of the government's Supporting People programme where she was responsible for its implementation.

She has also run a consultancy business which worked across the country with a range of statutory and voluntary sector agencies.

Stonepillow provides the chance for its clients to recover from their lives on the streets. It focuses on the key areas of health, housing and work.

THe support is available all year to the charity's 95 clients in its accommodation on any given evening.

THe aim is to enable them to find independent accommodation they can call home.

VOLUNTEERS around Bognor Regis and Chichester have been thanked for the contributions they make to their communities.

Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester (VAAC) says today's start of national Volunteers' Week is the ideal chance to celebrate the helpers for the skills and effort they make to their chosen good causes.

VAAC member June Caffyn, Littlehampton Shopmobility's manager, said: "At present we have five volunteers. THey are all wonderful. THey are all amazing and hard workers and I am grateful for all they do to help our charity."

Dr Phil Hewitt, the chairman of the Festival of Chichester, said: "We are celebrating our sixth festival this year...but there is a huge amount of work behind it and we are completely and utterly reliant on the goodwill, skills, time and enthusiasm of volunteers."

THis year's theme of Volunteers' Week is 'volunteering for all' and VAAC wants to highlight the wide variety of roles that are available in its area to prove there is something for everyone.

Among them is that of dormouse hunter. THe dedicated helpers who carry out this work for the Sussex Wildlife Trust compile the necessary data which is vital to ensuring the species continues to thrive in West Dean Woods.

Two of the hunters are Maria and Rodney Wildman, pictured below. THey monitor the animals monthly from March to November.

Maria said: "During checks, the dormice are carefully taken from the boxes, given a quick health and sex check and weighed before being returned to their boxes.

"Other than birds and dormice, we may also find shrews, bats, hornets and the far more aggressive tree bumblebees in our boxes. But they all deserve their place in their natural environments, so we do not unnecessarily disturb them.

"Finding a dormouse in a box is still a delight and being able to hold one in your hand a privilege especially if still in torpor and audibly snoring."

Other organisations which have paid tribute to volunteers include Chichester Ship Canal Trust, Petworth Vision Community Interest Company and the Snak Shak.

A COLOURFUL coach trip was enjoyed by Donnington Gardening Club's members to Exbury Gardens in Hampshire.

THe explosion of colours of the azaleas and rhododendrons were an assault on the senses and almost too much for the visitors to take in.

Club press officer Lawrence Holloway said: "Indeed, the bright orange azaleas threatened to burst into flames at any moment. Glades of giant trees, including mighty oaks with their new, clean and fresh leaves, look magical with their carpets of colourful azaleas, all helped by the brilliant blue sky above and bluebells below.

"Several not so agile members enjoyed buggy rides along the forest tracks and others rode in the narrow-gauge steam train, all accompanied by spring songs of woodland birds - song thrush, blackcap and blackbird."

THe visitors were delighted by the many butterflies on the wing in the woodland glades, together with large red damselflies and other dragonflies over the ponds and along the clear-flowing streams. THe day was rounded off nicely when the members were delighted by the many new foals on their return journey through the New Forest.

THe club's next meeting is at 7.30pm tonight in Donnington Parish Hall. Mary Holliday-Bishop will be the guest speaker on the subject of The Plant Hunters: Sir Joseph Banks and Captain James Cook.

Thousands of jobs were created on new estate

Large and small employers opened as the Durban Road Industrial Estate was developed TODAY I walked through the Durban Road Industrial Estate, or the South Bersted Business Park, as it is now known. It is an area I knew well as I was a personnel manager at Weir Electronics for ten years. Today there are major discussions in the Saltbox area to the north regarding new industrial units and hotels in the vicinity of Shripney Road.

It was interesting to see the changes that have taken place since the 1980. I thought I would take a brief look at this estate from its conception. One report from November 1957 commented: “THe area was poor agricultural land flanking the Aldingbourne Rife west of the Shripney Road and gasworks and belonged to a Bognorian named Brazier.

"It was thought that on his death he would present it to the town, but it went to his son. Negotiations went on for some years regarding the purchase of same by the council, but finally in 1957, it was announced that the 'industrial site' had been privately purchased and would be given over to piecemeal development by a speculator.” THis report in the paper was to be the start of the new development.

THe plan was that the new owners would erect a number of factory units ranging in size from 5,000 to 100,000 square feet, which would be offered for sale or let on long leases.

A director of the estate company believed that large industries operating out of London would be attracted to Bognor Regis in due course, hence the estate. THe local planning authority instructed that the estate should be planted with shrubs and trees because of the location of the estate to the nearby residential housing.

Before work began on this estate many people worked at the two major industrial companies in the town - Lec Refrigeration, in Shripney Road, who at its peak employed in excess of 2,000 people on all its shifts.

THe other company was Hall and Goulding, who became well known as Hago’s. It was also situated in Shripney Road, but eventually moved into premises on the Durban Road Industrial Estate.

In January 1960, work on the industrial estate started and the chairman of Bognor Regis Ratepayers Association said: “It has always been our view that attractively developed light industries are needed to provide year round employment in a seaside resort."

Interestingly, one of the first companies to open, Kingston Mouldings, brought many of their staff to the town from Kingston and only employed a few local people. THe article regarding Kingston Mouldings stressed

that there was a waiting list for jobs and the company anticipated that 65 per cent would be women.

Another early factory was Polly Peck where the staff produced dresses that were sold worldwide. How many people who worked there can remember the design of a ship’s wheel, with the four points of the compass?

THis nautical symbol was embroidered on all the clothing sent from the factory.

In 1963, it averaged 500 garments a week and employed about 65 staff. THe company arrived in Bognor almost by accident as the managing director had a holiday home on the Aldwick Bay estate, and he came across the factory units on a visit to the town.

I shall not attempt to list all of the companies who have used the estate during its lifetime, but only mention a few.

Weir Electronics started its life here in Bognor Regis and became one of the major employers in the town. THey expanded taking over a building here and another building there so that, eventually, the company seemed to be spread throughout the estate.

Weir’s eventually had over 500 employees at its peak, but it has declined and been taken over until today there is no visual sign of the name that is known by so many people in the town who worked there.

THe original office building used by Weir Electronics has undergone major changes and now offers a very different style of service for the future.

THe other buildings occupied by Weir have been transformed into a wide range of smaller units.

Another company was Rosemount

Engineering, who had a small unit on the estate Princess Alexandra opened their newly built premises during an impressive ceremony in July 1982.

Rosemount Engineering was formed in 1960 as a subsidiary of an American company and operated from an old stable in Kingston upon THames in Surrey. Within 12 months they had moved to Bognor Regis into units 17 and 18 until their new premises were built on scrubland behind them.

THe company expanded until they had in the region of 450 staff. However, over the years, with the changing needs of the aerospace industry, Rosemount Engineering has finally vanished from view and their Heath Place premises that seemed to dominate the estate has been taken over for other uses.

During the 1980s there were many business reviews published by the press or events in connection with career guidance and this provided us with yet more names to remember.

In the late 80s and 90s, fortunes were changing and redundancy instead of increasing staff numbers was the order of the day and companies started to close.

My overall impression this morning of the estate, was the increased number of smaller units, the style of businesses, bakery, motor cycles and a gym to name but a few.

Volunteers must be 18 years and over, be prepared to have a DBS check and be empathetic to the needs of others.

Volunteers need to be able to give two to three hours per week on a flexible basis once partnered, plus two half days for training.

Tone Zone's sweet 16 push Chi's Baker all the way in the Trundle HUNDREDS of runners conquered Trundle Hill as the annual 10k run up and down the landmark outside Chichester delivered a thrilling evening of off-road running.

In total 481 people took part in the scenic run which is organised by Chichester Runners and forms part of the West Sussex Fun Run League.

THere was joy on home turf for Chi's own James Baker who crossed the finish line in 36 minutes 29 seconds to take first place.

It was the start of a good evening for Chichester Runners, who took 128 points from the race to seal victory for the club.

Special mention must go to Graham Timson (40:27 - third overall), Tom Le Lievre (41:07 - fourth overall) and Emma Hughes (47:38 - third, women’s) who helped amass an excellent team tally.

THere was also a good display from the cohort from Bognor Tone Zone Runners Club. Just three days after the record-breaking Bognor 10k, 16 members crossed the finish line.

Simon Gill finished in third place overall with a very quick time of 37:38, followed by Jack Penfold with 43:49 (32nd overall). Crossing the line shortly after was Sean Power in 45:48

while Simon Hunt, Duncan Stephenson-Gill and Michael Manwill all ran sub 50 minutes.

Jess THomson and Louisa Proctor had a battle towards the end of the race, resulting in an exciting sprint finish for the spectators.

Sarah Santer crossed the line just after an hour for the club while Nicky King and Debi Haddleton also performed admirably.

At the other end of the county were Grace and Derek Natoli, competing in Edinburgh.

Derek took to the half marathon course and finished in just under two hours while Grace did the full 26 miles, falling in love with city as she went, eventually finishing in 4:31.

Elsewhere, marathon man Paul Coe, who’s aiming to run 100 marathons before the end of October, took on the near double marathon known as the North Downs Way 50.

Paul said “After 79 marathons, this was certainly the toughest event I have ever ran.

Nearly 6,000ft of climbing over 50 miles takes its toll in the latter stages, but overall I was very pleased to complete it, 10 hours 55 minutes was a lot better than I was expecting”.

THe following week Coe ran his 80th marathon along the THames, having recovered well and finishing in 4:14.

GOODWOOD is all set for the first of their THree Friday Nights - when top-class horseracing meets DJ sets from some of the most famous acts in the world.

THe racecourse just outside Chichester will welcome thousands of people to the eighth version of its popular evening meets.

With more rivals ahead of him than behind him at the half-way point of the seven-furlong prize, the William Haggas-trained 5/2 shot managed to weave a path through his rivals under Andrea Atzeni, before getting up on the line to deny Emaraaty by a short head.

In the feature race of the day, the Sir Michael Stoute trained Mirage Dancer took the mileand-a-half Netbet Android to win for the first time since 2016.

Other winners on the Saturday include First Sitting (6-1), the Mark Johnston trained Natalie's Joy (4-1), a 20-1 shot for Amanda Perett called Platitude, Englishman under Liam Keniry (5-1) and Bella Ragazza (10-1).

PostSport TRAMPOLINING: Bognor-based Dragonflyers keep on bouncing to new heights after they won their eighth national medal in less than a month.

THe club, which is based at THe Regis School, have collected a range of awards on a regional and UK level this season.

THe success continued in Cardiff as six Flyers brought home a further three medals after taking on trampolinists from all over the UK at the league event.

THe pairing of Libby Morton and Lucy Hijmans gained an amazing third place in the 9/14 years open synchro against male, female and mixed competitors.

Judges were impressed with their incredible timing and fabulous form in awarding them with a podium position.

It also meant they gained essential points towards a place at finals in Sheffield in November.

Sofija Kalnicenko yet again medalled at another national event making this her fourth competition in a row where she has returned with silverware.

THis time round Sofia took silver in the very top level league 1 13/14 years contest. Coach Linda O'Leary said: "Sofia has been successful across every national event performance pathway, English qualifiers and league, proving a force to reckon with."

Izzy Hauxwell also finalled on the day taking a fantastic seventh position at league 1 15/16 years. Hauxwell recently medalled at English qualifiers Coach O'Leary was also full of praise for Rosie Budge, who completed her double full for the first time. Judges deemed her 6.3 difficulty worthy of 12th place at league 2 13/14 years with an incredible score of 81.650.

Julie Morton took off her judging blazer, put down her team manager clip board and made her first steps on the national scene as a coach with William Foden who finished an excellent 16th in the male 13/14 years.

O'Leary said: "Dragonflyers are extremely proud of all six performers who just keep on excelling. Eight national medals in under one month is an excellent return."

THe club practises at THe Regis School most evenings with a variety of classes running through the week.

All ages and abilities are welcome to come along. Recreational spaces are available on Mondays between 4.30pm and 5.30pm and 5.30pm and 6.30pm from June 5.

Trials for the squad are also available for those age seven and upwards.

BOWLS: Bognor Ladies suffered a disappointing start in the newly sponsored Game, Set and Match league after losing to newly promoted Worthing Pavilion.

Bognor got off to a good start but their opponents soon found the green. Bognor won on one rink but lost on overall shot difference scoring two league points to Worthing Pavilion’s four. In the friendly rink, it was a close game with Worthing Pavilion coming out the winners by one shot.

Bognor men faced a strong County Vice Patrons team and, unfortunately, lost on all rinks.

In the West Sussex Bowls League Division One, Bognor men’s A team played Worthing A in the league and came away with six points having won on two rinks and a better overall shot advantage. THe best performances came from M Conolly, D Parker, G Stevens, A. Richardson who won 24-8; and K. Hellyer, P. Lichfield, N. Hatfield, J Whitfield who won 30-13.

Next up for Bognor A is a trip to Tarring Priory tomorrow while in Division Two Pagham host East Preston A. Both matches start at 2pm.

Bognor's unbeaten streak is on the line at Three Bridges

Pearce up for Selsey project NEW Selsey manager Daren Pearce says he is excited by the challenge ahead as he looks to steer the Blues back into the SCFL Premier.

With a talented young squad, an excellent pitch and good facilities, there is a real sense of optimism around the Bunn Leisure Stadium.

Now, Pearce, who has been drafted in after stepping down from nearby Sidlesham, is being tasked with bringing the good days back to Selsey.

He will succeed Steve Bailey who resigned from the club after four and half years earlier this month, claiming that he and chairman David Lee were no longer in agreement on the future of the club.

Pearce, who used to play for the Blues, said the aim was for the club to progress in the coming year.

He said: "I played at Selsey a few years ago under Danny Hinshelwood.

"Dave Lee the chairman was there at the time too and everyone around the club was friendly and welcoming.

"THose things stay with you so, when Dave heard I was stepping down at Sidlesham, he stepped in quite quickly.

"THe club is organised,

well-run, it has got youth development through the ages and they have been around the county league a while.

When you get the chance to move, sometimes you know it's right to make that move."

Pearce has wasted no time in building a team for next season.

Last year's player of the season Ryan Morey has already signed for next year.

A raft of new faces have joined as well - with goalkeeper Connor Kelly, defender Dale Hayes, Tom Kelly, Ryan Hillier, Callum Dowdell and Bradley HigginsPearce all following the new manager from Sidlesham.

THe cohort who have made the short trip down B2145 will not have to wait long to face their former side - with it being confirmed the Sids will take their place in SCFL Division One next season after finishing second in the league below last year.

Pearce said: "Myself and Andy Bell said we would like to get them back to where they should be. We did what we said we would but was through a lot of hard work from a lot of people behind the scenes."

BOGNOR Regis CC will be looking to make it four games unbeaten when they head to inform THree Bridges tomorrow.

Ryan Maskell's side have performed well in the opening month of the Sussex Division Two campaign, losing just one of their opening four fixtures.

THat good form continued last weekend when they chalked up a convincing 135-run over Ansty at THe Regis Oval.

Second-placed Bognor are sure to be in for a tougher task tomorrow when they travel to fourth-placed THree Bridges tomorrow (12.30pm) when they face a side who are yet to lose this campaign.

Maskell will be looking to lead from the front once again. After being put into bat by Ansty, the skipper entered the field with his side at 27-2.

But Maskell (42) put on 83 for the third wicket with opener Josh Seward (37) to take Bognor over the 100 mark. Combined with a late salvo from Tom Woolnough (43) the home team reached 207-7 from their 45 overs.

Batting woes haunt Middleton

MIDDLETON CC will be hoping to improve on their batting woes as the club's difficult start to the Sussex Premier season continues.

Sean Heather's side slumped to bottom of the table after being crushed by 147 runs at Brighton & Hove last weekend.

Next up for Middleton is a trip to Preston Nomads tomorrow (12pm), where the Sea Lane side hope that a match on one of the finest batting tracks in the county will trigger a revival in fortunes.

THe struggle for runs is really hampering Middleton's campaign so far. After four

matches, they have collected just six batting points, the second lowest in the division after Nomads.

THis poor form with the bat continued last weekend when, after restricting Brighton & Hove to 235 for 9 (Craig Fowle 3-26), Middleton could only amass 88 in reply.

Only four players reached double figures in the total with number nine Brandon Hanley top-scoring with 19.

THe result puts Heather's side bottom.

But with just 13 points separating them and Eastbourne in fourth, Middleton know that a

Stuart Hanks' side came up 51 runs short last weekend as they were trying to chase down Findon's 264 for 9.

Rico Webb put in a fine all-round performance for Pagham, clubbing 79 off just 36 balls after taking 4-54 with the ball.

But his effort was in vain as the Nyetimber Lane side could only reach 213 all out.

Andrade snapped up as City rebuild CHICHESTER City are only looking one way next season as the club look to seal promotion from the SCFL Premier for the first time.

Miles Rutherford's side promised so much in what was a record-breaking season for the Oaklands Park side.

A run to the last 16 of the FA Vase and winning the Sussex RUR Cup were highlights for Chi. But a late season slump in the SCFL Premier meant that City finished a disappointing sixth.

Rebuilding work is now underway at Oaklands Park. THis week, extensive renovation of the pitch began. But away from the ground, the club made the first summer signing of the season with Tiago Andrade being snapped up from Broadbridge Heath.

also played for Horsham, Shoreham and Haywards Heath in recent years. Andrade cited linking up with the first team coach Daniel Potter as a major reason for joining.

f Last year's player's player of the season Doug Tuck has signed terms to stay at Nyewood Lane next season

Dan's Beck in green and white as Rocks add Tuck and Sparks BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says there's still more work to be done despite the club snapping up two old faces and a new one in the last week.

THe Rocks manager has been hitting the phone hard in recent days as he looks to assemble a strong squad ahead of the club's return to the Isthmian Premier.

Midfield playmaker Doug Tuck was the first to commit to another year at Nyewood Lane this week. THat was followed by an announcement which confirmed the return of former club captain Dan Beck, pictured left, and Harvey Sparks, who has joined from fellow Isthmian Premier side Worthing.

Pearce was extremely pleased with the additions - but vows that more work needs to be done ahead of the side returning to preseason training in the first week of July.

He said: "THe club continues to have conversations with players and we remain very hopeful of bringing together a squad capable of doing the club and the supporters proud."

THe addition of Tuck in the past week is perhaps crucial to the club moving forward.

THe midfielder, who reportedly rejected offers from clubs elsewhere to stay at Nyewood Lane, has become integral to the Rocks in recent years. His cool calm nature in the middle of the park means he is often the start of many of Bognor's attacking moves.

His importance to the team was reflected in him winning the player's player of the year award at the club's recent awards evening.

Pearce said: "Doug embodies a lot of what we are about as a club and having him sign for next season is a tremendous bit of news for us.

"It shows we are working hard to continuing to assemble the squad we want in place.

Signing players of Tuck's ability should help ensure we are in a good position for when the season starts."

THe other additions will ensure there is competition for places in the Rocks midfield next term. Sparks, 23, is a left-sided midfielder who scored eight goals in 41 appearances at Woodside Road last term.

Pearce said: "We're very much looking forward to working with Harvey. He has had six years at Worthing and it'll do him no harm whatsoever coming to us to try to develop his game further.

"I think we will both benefit from that.

Dan is, of course, much respected by me and the supporters, having proved to be such a valuable player for the club over the years. It's encouraging to have a player of his experience, desire and attitude agree to join us for the new season.

Sparks, Tuck and Beck join Corey Heath, Keaton Wood, Harvey Whyte, Calvin Davies, Tommy Scutt and Chad Field in the Bognor ranks for next season.

Prices drop for season tickets THE COST of Bognor tickets for the coming campaign have been confirmed.

THe Rocks' return to the Isthmian Premier will see the club play 23 home matches compare to 21 last time out.

But Nye Camp faithful will be pleased to see that the drop in level means a drop in the price of a season ticket to Nyewood Lane.

Adult season tickets for terracing for the 2018/19 season have been priced at £177 down from £201 on the current campaign.

THe prices for senior citizens (over 65) have also dropped - from £168 to £147 - along with the season ticket cost for under-18s - which are £73, down from £84.

Season tickets in seating are priced at £192, while senior citizens pay £162.

On the day tickets for the terrace remain at £12 for adults. THe price for senior citizens (aged over 65) and under-18s (and students with ID)are also frozen at £10 and £5 respectively. Under-16s as of 11/8/18 can apply to the club for free season tickets.

Season tickets will be on sale from the club office or from Mia in Seasons from Monday, July 2, and at the pre-season friendly matches.

THE ROCKS rebuilding project is well and truly underway.

A new coach has been added in the guise of former Football League striker Robbie Blake while, on the pitch, seven players have agreed terms for next season.

Among the first to sign on the dotted line was utility player Harvey Whyte, pictured above left. THe former Havant man's lung-busting performances from a range of defensive and midfield positions have meant he is a real fan's favourite at Nyewood Lane.

Given that his dad Dallas played for the club back in the 80s, Harvey has Bognor in this blood.

In a chat with the club website, the 26-year-old reveals why he is chomping at the bit to help the club return to step two next season.

"THen you have Keaton, who is still only 23 but he has shown such maturity and again, I think he has a bright future ahead of him.”

First things first, let's talk departures. THe club has lost a number of influential players from last season. How will that affect the club moving forward?

"Obviously, there is going to be lots of talk about whether Jack is going to be the manager, and that will be sorted one way or another.

"But all I want to do is play and repay the fans for their loyalty by having a decent season.

“Jack has taken a lot of stick and he is the manager and we have gone down so he can’t escape that.

"But some of the personal abuse he has been given is totally out of order.

"He is a football man through and through and to my mind deserves respect.”

“Players will come and go, and that is up to them. You can’t blame players who want a change, perhaps earn more money somewhere else.

"We saw it with Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior, when they went to Havant.

And fair play to them.

“But I just love Bognor. I love the football we try to play – and above all I want to move on from last season.

How much will the club miss the influence of former first team coach Dabba, who has now stepped down?

“I’ve learned so much from Dabba in the years since I left Havant, especially technically.

So, yes, it is undoubtable he’ll be missed.

"But we have to move on and try to regroup and get on with it."

A lot of fans are still talking about the situation with the manager - do you think Jack will stay on for another year?

What do you make of the signings so far?

How are you going to enjoy the break before pre-season starts?

“If you look at the players we’ve signed so far, it is very encouraging.

"I think Calvin Davies could one day be a professional and he’s a big signing. He’s technically gifted – all that might hold him back is his height!

“THough I would never tell him to his face, Chad Field has

“I’m going to kick back a bit and relax and I am looking forward to the break.

"But I can assure our supporters my mind will be fully focused on the job in hand come pre-season and the start of the season.

"And I hope our fantastic supporters are behind us once more and we do them proud.”
