He told Monday's cabinet meeting at Arun he was delighted to see a formal growth deal for the district was to be signed with West Sussex County Council.

The agreement lays out the councils' goals to improve Bognor Regis by focusing on the Hothamton and Regis Centre sites and the Enterprise Bognor Regis employment project.

In a strongly worded attack, he said: "I wholeheartedly support this document and wish it the best for future investment.

"I have heard a lot of noise in the papers and on local Facebook sites about how 'devastated' people are to have the Hothamton car park finally being regenerated.

"I'm chuffed to pieces it is on this list of seven priorities. Anybody who misses how successful the regeneration to date

in Bognor Regis has been is blind. Footfall is up, cars are up and the place looks like it is being improved. There have definitely been improvements to part of the town."

Cllr Bence, the cabinet member for residential services, returned to his theme later in the debate when mention was made of the success of Arun's new play area since it opened on Bognor Regis beach last month.

A NEW way of working in mental health services has been launched for Bognor Regis area residents.

Pathfinder is an alliance of organisations working together to enable people with mental health needs to gain the support they and their carers require.

Seven of the groups were present at last week's event to promote the coming together to provide a single point of contact for patients.

One of the charities involved is CAPITAL Project Trust. Its chief executive, Clare Ockwell, said: "Pathfinder is a group of local providers who are networking together.

"Rather than someone going to one mental health provider, we don't want to be saying to them they need to go down the road to another one.

"We can link up and help people to access the service rather than the fact they have to do it.

"It makes for a much more joined up service. People can self-refer themselves to it as well.

"This service will potentially affect a lot of people. One in four people have mental health issues."

The Bognor Regis area is one of nine in West Sussex which have a Pathfinder service. As well as CAPITAL Project Trust, its core members include Coastal West Sussex Mind, Stonepillow, Southdown Employment Services and United Response.

Other organisations, such as Bognor Regis-based Radio Respect and My

Sister's House women's support service, are also involved.

Staff involved with Pathfinder are trained to provide one-to-one advice and support.

They pledge to listen to individuals - who could have schizophrenia, depression or anxiety among other conditions - to enable them to fully understand their concerns.

They will also provide the right advice and information and can advise individuals of services and support which can help them with their mental health and wellbeing.

"People have often felt like pass the parcel in the past," said Mrs Ockwell.

"Now, they will go to just one service."

The network in West Sussex will also have contacts with the networks around the county to refer clients on to them if it is needed.

Sussex Partnership NHS Trust will also play an important role in Pathfinder to act as a bridge between a patient's GP and specialist services.

"This means that where people who need a bit more help than a GP or, if they have been supported but do not need that level of service any more, they can require some help.

"It saves them being left high and dry.

Unfortunately, a lot of people do and they can feel isolated and unsupported."

INDEPENDENT living in Westergate for dozens of elderly people has moved £600,000 closer.

Arun District Council has agreed to provide the cash to a planned extra care housing scheme in the village.

It will form part of the development at Nyton Nurseries and will comprise 60 dwellings and 20 for shared ownership.

The scheme will cost more than £10m. Other grants have been received by the housing provider, Housing and Care 21, and Arun's share will come from money paid by developers of housing in the area to boost services.

Satnam Kaur, Arun's group head of

residential services, said the housing would be available for those aged 55-plus who needed more care than conventional retirement housing but less care than a nursing home.

"The primary objective of this scheme is to provide high quality housing for older people in Arun that promotes independence," she said.

Arun's leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, said: "This has been a considerable amount of work and it is important to have schemes like this."

Cllr John Charles, cabinet member for housing, said: "This is much needed."

Beer-illiant weekend at festival in village AROUND 1,000 beer and ale lovers arrived in Yapton over the weekend for the annual Berex festival.

THe event, held at Yapton and Ford Village Hall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, still saw usual numbers enter despite the royal wedding and the FA Cup final reducing crowds slightly on Saturday.

Organiser Mick Reynolds said: "We had about 250 people through on Friday night and over 705 people on Saturday.

"THe festival improves every year, it gets bigger and bigger, but we don't want it to get too much bigger, it's a nice size how it is at the moment.

"THe dark ale went really quickly and was the most popular this year.

"We see new faces every year, but we see the old ones, too!"

THe festival was raising money for

Parents and Carers Organisation (PACSO), a local charity supporting children with disabilities and their families in the Chichester and Arun districts.

George Blampied, from Felpham, attended on Sunday with his family, some of whom were visiting from France.

He said: "I come here every year. It's a really well-run event and a superb place with lovely beers.

"I'm here because it's local, it's wellsuppoerted by a lot of people from all over and I love beer! I've just had Pale Duke which was really good."

His son, Peter, added: "It is nice that you have so many choices. I like the fact they sell them in thirds or half pints so you can try more by having smaller quantities."

Friends, Simon Williams and Brian

Stone, from Yapton, have been to all 29 Berex festivals.

Brian said: "I enjoy the festival every year. THere is always a range of people I meet here from Yapton school, the rugby club and old friends. My favourite beer has been the Short and Stout from THree Brothers, County Durham.

"It's chocolatey. It's got a good chocoalte taste on a nice dark beer."

Simon added: "THere is a really good selection of beer here. It's been great again.

"I really like the new stemmed goblet style glasses this year. I must have had over 100 of them because my mum and dad and daughter used to come here, too, and we collected them over the years. I have got rid of quite a few now, but I did colelct the 25th golden one because that was special."

Tributes paid to former soldier from Bognor TRIBUTES have been paid after the body of a former soldier from Bognor Regis was found.

A widespread search for Daniel Johnston was called off when the body was found on Wednesday lunchtime at Stoughton Down near Chichester.

THe death is being treated by police as unexplained but there are currently no suspicious circumstances.

Sussex Police are not looking for anyone in connection with the death.

Comments in tribute to Mr Johnston have been made on social media following the discovery of the body.

Andrea Jones wrote: "What an incredibly sad day. Danny had the biggest smile and the biggest heart.

"What we all have to remember, is that he didn't want to end his life. He wanted to end the pain and suffering within his head.

"THe scars of war don't always show on the body. RIP Danny. You were loved by so many people. Fly high with the angels."

Rhys Coe was another to pay tribute on Wednesday . He said: "I'm so so sorry to say that some guys in the Kingley vale national park, where we were this morning, have found our dear friend Danny Johnston in the woods.

"We are all so grateful for the love and support that the whole area and country have given us, but today we found him resting and in a place he wanted to be.

"THank you all so much but today we drink (brandy, his choice) and celebrate his life as 1 of the kindest most amazing human beings that any of us have ever met.

"RIP mate, we love you to the furthest stars and back again."

Mr Johnston had served in the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He was last seen on Sunday morning while he had been staying with his family in Macklin Road.

He told his mother he was going out but did not return and made no contact with family and friends.

Sussex Police issued their first appeal for help in finding him on Monday. THis was followed by further appeals.

An extensive search took place. THis was centred on the Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield on Tuesday and involved Sussex Police, members of his former regiment and other volunteers.

Police said officers were called to a report of a body in the wooded area Stoughton Down the next day.

Inspector Roy Hodder, of Sussex Police's missing persons team, said: "We would like to express our condolences to the family and friends of Daniel Johnston at this difficult time.

"We would like to extend our thanks to family and friends of Daniel who volunteered to assist us in the search for him."

Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, said: "I have heard with great sadness of the death of Daniel Johnston.

"Daniel served in the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment in both Afghanistan and Iraq, serving his country with great distinction.

"He joined when he was 16. It was the life he wanted. His service brought many challenges. Bognor salutes a brave son.

"On behalf of all councillors and staff of the Bognor Regis Town Council, I express full condolences to his mother, Vivienne, his brother and sister, Lucas and Sophie, and to all his family and friends of which there are many in our town and beyond.

"At this time, I know people will observe respect for his family's privacy and grieving."

` Birdman cash call ORGANISERS of this summer's International Bognor Birdman have appealed for more sponsors.

They said they needed another £15,000 to ensure the crowd-pulling event goes ahead on August 11 and 12 off the town's pier.

Jan Malpas, treasurer of the International Bognor Birdman, said: "The volunteer organisers for IBB, now in its 40th year, have already raised nearly half the funding for this year's event from Bognor Regis Town Council and other supporters, which we are so grateful for.

"However, we still need another £15,000 to enable us to hold this year's event.

"This is an excellent business opportunity for both local and national companies to gain massive local and worldwide exposure at this unique competition."

The world-famous challenge to fly 100m over the sea was mentioned in The Sunday Times earlier this month to prove the widespread nature of its reputation, she said.

The day also raises thousands of pounds for charities across the UK. IBB chairman Sarah Boote-Cook said: "Help us to make International Bognor Birdman happen in 2018.

"Without this additional funding, IBB 2018 is in serious jeopardy of not taking place. Help us to help your business, charities and Bognor Regis to stage another fantastic IBB in 2018.

"We want to engage with all Bognor Regis local businesses with our ideas of turning Bognor Regis town into a Bognor Birdman Zone from the end of the pier to the town cente and High Street."

Homes sites decision due A CRUCIAL verdict on the use of Pagham land for housing is due soon.

Arun District Council's director of place, Karl Roberts, told a packed public meeting he expected government inspector Mark Dakeyne's report on the local plan land use blueprint within two months.

“We are waiting for the inspector of the local plan to produce his report about where he wants to see development. We anticipate receiving his report in June or July. The intention is the local plan will be put before councillors to approve in July.

“If that is the case, that will then become our adopted plan and will be given considerable weight when we consider individual planning applications," he said.

For the four sites in Pagham for which planning applications for 1,200 homes had been submitted, he said the council was seeking further advice.

A recent European court ruling was being studied by the council's consultants to find out how it affected the Pagham sites, particularly south of Summer Lane, because of the range of protections given to Pagham Harbour local nature reserve.

He said: “We have taken the view to seek further advice. Once we have received that, we will advise our members about how it affects these applications.

“The applications could come to the development control committee in July or at a later date. I don't know but it will certainly not be until we get that advice.”

Last Friday's meeting was organised by the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (Pagam) as part of its campaign

against the housing. Some 200 people filled West Meads Community Centre to quiz a panel of five speakers and raise their concerns about the housing's impact.

Alan Pivett, PAGAM's vice chairman, said traffic concerns were the biggest worry of residents who filled in a questionnaire at the group's coffee mornings. About 6070 per cent rated it as their number one worry if the housing went ahead. The next biggest concern was the effect on doctors' surgeries in the area.

The largest sites of Pagham North, Pagham South and West of Bersted would generate 3,700 homes. A further 130 in Pagham had already been agreed. Another two sites could also be developed to produce a total of 4,645 homes to mean another 11,000-plus residents with about 5,500 cars between them.

He said: “We all know the biggest problem we have at the moment is people getting annoyed over traffic. Instead of a 15-20 minute journey to Chichester, that is now taking up to an hour. I believe that will only get worse.”

Pagham parish councillor Phil Higson said piecemeal work to the A27 roundabouts at Chichester would fail to tackle the extra traffic.

“What is needed is an end-to-end study of the A27 Chichester bypass. Everybody here knows improving just those two roundabouts will not make any difference.

"It will be eons before any upgrade takes place. Common sense tells you this side of Bognor Regis is not the place to put all this housing to increase the volume of traffic."

Elmer residents thanked for help after wartime mine is detonated EMERGENCY services have thanked Elmer residents for their co-operation while a wartime mine was tackled.

The German Second World War sea mine, estimated to weigh about 1,000 kilos, was found on Saturday morning below the high water mark off Elmer.

It was secured and towed out to sea by Royal Navy ordnance disposal experts on Sunday. It was detonated at 5pm. Shipping and planes were warned to stay clear.

Detective Inspector Jason Taylor, of Sussex Police, said: "This was a carefully planned operation with police, other emergency services and partners, including the coastguard, working closely together to ensure the device was dealt with safely.

"Following advice from military

ordnance experts, a number of cordons were put in place to provide a safe distance for members of the public.

"On behalf of all agencies, we thank the local residents who have been involved for their co-operation and their patience."

Work on the device was carried out when the tides allowed access. An area of beach was cordoned off.

A number of houses along the adjacent seafront were visited. Residents were advised to leave their windows open and to use only the rear part of their premises while the mine was dealt with.

However, no evacuations were necessary. The cordons were withdrawn by 6pm on Sunday.

Seafront residents were then advised no precautions were needed.

Council's new study for park

SIX TOWN councillors have been chosen for a task force to publicise regeneration plans for Bognor Regis.

The members were appointed at a special meeting of the town council on Tuesday in response to fears that residents’ concerns about the schemes were being ignored.

Cllrs Jan Cosgrove, Steve Goodheart, Jeanette Warr, Matt Stanley, Damien Enticott and Sandra Daniells will report back within a month with their views about how best to publicise the projects.

It will be up to the town council to decide if it wants to highlight the ideas for the Hothamton linear park - with open space, parking and flats - and the Regis Centre.

One of them, Val O’Neill, said: “I thank Cllr Stanley for putting forward what we think. This (scheme) is all about putting up extra flats.”

Another, former town mayor Roger Nash, said: “The linear park proposals are not regeneration. They are simply redevelopment.

“They are an effort by Arun to make a bit more money because, like a lot of councils, they need to do that.”

Arun should look at seafront sites such as the Royal Hotel and Waterloo Square, which need to be improved, he said.

Bognor Regis Civic Society deputy chairman Hugh Coster said: “It’s very important we all work together to impose our views on Arun, whatever the views we come to.”

Cllr Jan Cosgrove (L, Orchard) told the committee: “This is all about the people of this town having a voice.

“We need to get all the regeneration ideas that are still valid to the public as quickly as we can and as efficiently and cost effectively as we can in such a way so they can vote on them. We can take that view to Arun.”

Cllr Jeanette Warr (LD, Hotham) said: “I am very much against the linear park and that is the opinion of many people in the town. We are a seaside town and we need to have regeneration on the seafront."

Cllr Steve Goodheart (I, Hotham) said: “It beggars belief that we are still here and still none the wiser about what Arun’s real plans are for both sites.”

Gardens meeting LIBERAL Democrats in Bognor Regis are staging a public meeting to save an open space.

The councillors want to stop plans by Arun District Council for a linear park on the Hothamton site of the car park and Sunken Gardens between Queensway and Waterloo Square.

Their meeting will take place at 7pm on June 21 in the Jeneses Arts Centre in Linden Road.

One of the councillors involved, Matt Stanley, said: "We want to give the community a platform to voice their concerns about this project, and also to share their thoughts and provide input into a community-led alternative for the area.

Dog owner's warning GRIEVING dog owner Brian Goldsmith has warned users of a Aldwick park to take care.

Mr Goldsmith could not stop one of his beloved chihuahaus being killed in West Park by a bitch five times his size.

He said: "Bobby had no chance of survival. Yet his little life was marked by a love for everyone he met.

"He exuded it and everyone loved him for it, especially children. Never a day went by without our smiling at his laid-back style and comical antics."

Aldwick Felds resident Mr Goldsmith, 81, and his wife, Hazel, had owned Bobby for about three years.

They believed him to be eight years old.

He was killed about 4pm last Thursday when Mr Goldsmith took Bobby and the couple's other chihuahua, Neblina, for their daily walk around West Park.

They were by the children's play area when the attack happened. The bitch suddenly appeared and grabbed Bobby and shook him until he died.

Mr Goldsmith was in shock but tried to rescue Bobby before the bitch would let him go.

"He was bleeding and I had blood on my hands. I was absolutely heartbroken," he said.

A kind passer-by took Bobby to a vet's surgery but nothing could be done. Neblina had fled the scene and raced back home.

"I loved Bobby in life and I'll always treasure his memory. Thank you to those dear folk who tried to help me in West Park that day.

"Many friends and family have shared our grief in practical ways," Mr Goldsmith said.

He said Bobby's violent death came to mind when he heard the sermon given by the US Episcopal Bishop Michael Curry at last Saturday's wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

"My tribute to dear Bobby would highlight the Bishop's timely plea that the flame of God's love to humanity might spread throughout our sad and needy world.

"Even a little chihuahau can contribute with a life of loving and being loved. 'Thank you, Bobby, for the blessing you brought into our lives'," he said.

He has reported the attack to the police.

"As Liberal Democrats, we believe that the regeneration of our town has to work for the community. In order to achieve this, we need to communicate.

"Alongside our public meeting, we will be launching a petition to request that Arun put an immediate halt to their linear park project.

"Hopefully, from here we can start developing an alternative proposal that the community actually want."

Cllr Stanley said his byelection campaigning last February in the Marine ward revealed a lot of opposition to the linear park scheme. But repeated bids to get Arun to discuss the matter had failed.

"Therefore, it is clear we have to do something different," he added.

"Anybody who does not recognise how successful that has been is either 'mad' or blind, or possibly both. We've got our fair share of the first one.

"Long may this success carry on and long may the council continue to think about the seafront and the town centre."

The cabinet agreed the growth deal should be signed.

Denise Vine, Arun's group head of economy, said the growth plan would ensure the district and county councils' resources were aligned to deliver sustainable growth and unlock chances for new homes, floor space for jobs, infrastructure and rejuvenated town centres.

It follows on from the launch of the Arun Growth Board in 2015 and the Arun place plan a year later.

"The growth deal strengthens accountability and identifies coherent ways of the councils working together, improving communication, co-operation and efficiency.

"The councils have agreed to work co-operatively and in partnership to deliver specific growth priorities.

Vow to fight on - chairman RE-ELECTED Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall has pledged to keep battling to protect the area.

Cllr Radmall was chosen unanimously at the local authority's annual meeting to lead it for another year. He has occupied the role since spring 2005.

He told his fellow councillors he would maintain the council's stance towards the large housing schemes proposed for three sites and the need to bolster its eroded beach.

"We have some massive responsibilities for sea defence issues and housing issues.

I think things are progressing reasonably well for both. I hope we can get rid of at least two of the housing sites because the plans are extremely prejudical to wildlife."

As reported, developers want to build hundreds of homes at Sefter Road, Hook Lane and south of Summer Lane.

"Our infrastructure couldn't cope with that amount of development," said Cllr Ray Radmall. "Our roads can't cope now and we know the sewage system can't cope. Our traffic infrastructure will be quite disastrious if we get this volume of traffic.

"We are very fortunate to have Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Movement (Pagam). I'm very impressed with their applications, skills and dedication they are bringing to this fight against this volume of unsustainable housing being imposed upon us."

For the coastline, Cllr Radmall said he was committed to getting the best result possible to protect the hundreds of properties vulnerable to flooding after the beach had become eroded by the

tides washed on to it by the growth of the Church Norton Spit.

"In 2008, the Environment Agency stated there were 330 homes at risk. Of those, 300 were at Pagham and 30 at Sidlesham. A total of 3,000 houses were certainly at risk by the end of the century.

"We have to put pressure on the authorities to get something done to make sure our beach front and inner harbour are improved properly."

Cllr Phil Hailey said the Pagham coastal issues group was making progress in its work. The group brought together groups such as Natural England, the Environment Agency and Arun and Chichester district councils.

"The group is going to issue a Pagham Beach Action Plan," he said. "This will look at all the scenarios (for protecting the beach). It will look at shingle management and whether groynes are appropriate.

"There are no plans to put groynes in along the beach at this stage but the situation will be monitored and we will see how matters develop.

"Everybody is signed up to this, which is a good basis to get things started.

"Having all the authorities on board, then it makes it easier to take action as well as having the funding streams."

Cllr David Huntley, who also represents the parish council on the action group, said he hopeful it would produce some meaningful action. This would be better than previous short-term actions of moving shingle around the beach.

Cllr Huntley was re-elected unopposed at the meeting as the council's vicechairman alongside Cllr Radmall.

Duke and Duchess of Sussex asked to star at town cinema NEWLY-WED royals the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been invited to open the new cinema screen in Bognor Regis.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have been asked by the Bognor Regis' new town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, about the chances of success if he formally wrote to them about adding some regal glamour to the fourth screen at the Picturedrome.

Town council events officer Kirsten Fitzpatrick said: "Bognor Regis takes great pride in its royal accolade, bestowed upon the town by King George V following his time spent

convalescing here in 1929.

"It is understood that Earl Spencer, the late Princess of Wales's father, owned two homes on the Aldwick Bay estate and that both Prince William and Prince Harry spent time here with their mother in their younger years.

"The Picturedrome cinema is in its centenary year and Bognor Regis Town Council would be honoured if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would consider attending the official opening of the cinema's fourth screen, particularly as the Duchess is a former actress."

As reported, the near £1m 108-seat new screen should open this August.

Latest award flag flies above prom A NEW national award has been flying over Bognor Regis seafront this week.

As reported, the town's east beach has regained the Seaside Award for another year. The achievement of gaining the status for another year confirms its facilities and cleanliness exceed the standards set by Keep Britain Tidy.

The blue-coloured flag has taken pride of place on the promenade flagpoles next to the bandstand.

Bognor Regis' new town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, was joined by the new chairman of Arun District Council, Cllr Alan Gammon, to raise the flag for the first time.

Arun is responsible for day-to-day running of the beach, as well as its fellow award winner of Coastguards beach in Littlehampton.

Cllr Gammon said: "These two beaches have now reached this accolade for many consecutive years.

"Our staff and community groups work

hard to make these beaches welcoming for local people and visitors.

"So, we're delighted this hard work has been recognised yet again."

The Seaside Award celebrates the quality and diversity of Britain's coastline.

Formerly called the Quality Coast Award, the scheme is the nationwide standard for the best beaches across the UK. The beaches can be vastly different, the flag is a symbol of quality which ensures visitors are guaranteed to find a clean, safe,attractive and well-managed coastal stretch.

Cllr Mike Clayden, Arun's cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: "We are delighted that two of our beaches have again been recognised by Keep Britain Tidy as among the country's best.

"Having the Seaside Award flags flying above these beaches sends out the message that Arun has some top-quality beaches to be enjoyed by all."

` Staff donations CASUAL clothes were worn by staff at Bognor Regis Town Hall and the Civic Centre in Littlehampton to raise money for firefighters.

The Arun District Council workers donated ÂŁ268 by paying to leave their formal clothes at home.

The money has been presented to the Fire Fighters Charity. One of its three rehabilitation centres is in Littlehampton.

Some of the staff were able to visit the town's fire station to see how quickly a chip pan fire can spread and how to extinguish it quickly.

Arun chief executive Nigel Lynn volunteered to be trapped in a car and cut out safely.

He said: "The work that the fire service does is so valuable that any help we can offer is a privilege."

` Dog care plans WORRIES about the effect on neighbours have led Arun District Council's planning officers to reject plans for a canine day care facility in Bognor Regis.

They said they were concerned the idea by Ken Dobson for Unit 1 in Christie Place would cause unacceptable harm to people who lived nearby.

Chorus member Julie is on song NEW MEMBER Julie Stockton hhelped a chorus unveil a new song.

Julie completed the latest Love to Sing course held by the North Bersted-based Arun Barbership Choir.

A spokeswoman for the chorus said: "We challenged ourselves and participants to learn a new four-part harmony song over the course of six weeks.

"Julie successfully completed the course and has been welcomed in to the chorus as a full member."

Julie received her certificate from the chairman of the chorus, Joyce Stroud.

"This all culminated with Julie joining us to sing our new song in public for the very first time at our 37th birthday party this month."

The celebration took place during a busy few months for the chorus.

They began with an appearance at Choirfest 2018, which saw its members appear at the Alexandra Theatre in Bognor Regis alongside several other choirs from the area.

Pupils learn online safety LESSONS in keeping safe online were learned by children at a Bognor Regis school.

The training session for Edward Bryant School pupils was arranged by Google as part of a UK-wide initiative to teach children about how to use the internet.

The scheme, called Be Internet Legends, tackled some of the most challenging issues that families face in the digital world.

These include self-esteem, body image, mental health and extremism.

Nick Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, attended the assembly.

He said: "I was delighted to see local children learn the skills they need to explore the opportunities of the internet safely.

"It is so important that we equip children in all primary schools with digital skills and I am pleased that Google are becoming involved in this important issue."

The assembly covered five main aspects of internet awareness that are important for 7-11-year-olds.

It raised the importance of being aware of what is shared online and talking to adults about any problems or worries they have that come from being online.

Lucy sets the pace for women in town's record-breaking road race LUCY THRAVES ran her fastest Bognor Prom 10k road race to take the number one women’s spot.

Lucy has entered the run four times and Sunday saw her knock six minutes off her original finishing time of 44 minutes to lead the other women home on Sunday.

Her provisional time of 38:11 was just enough to see off the challenge of last year’s first woman home, Johanna Spannagl.

Chichester Runners member Lucy, 23, who has started working in publishing in London, said: “I am over the moon about winning. I knew I was in good shape but I didn’t know what the competition would be like.

“I came third last year and I knew I would be up there with the winners but I didn’t think I would be the winner.

“I’ve got better every time I’ve entered the race and I will definitely come back next year to defend my title.”

Conditions were a lot better for Chichester resident Lucy’s win than the record heat for her London Marathon debut last month.

Johanna Spannagl just failed to keep her top spot from 2017 by finishing 13 seconds behind Lucy in 38:24. She pipped thirdplaced Emma Jane Montiel in 38:31.

Lucy was 21st overall in a recordbreaking field of finishers. A total of 1,710 went across the finish line in Silverston Avenue. This easily beat the 1,574 previous record who took on the seafront course last year.

The unprecedented number – out of a

record maximum of 2,000 entries – was fronted by another first-time winner.

University of Chichester student Bernie Spannagl, brother of Johanna, was comfortably ahead of the rest in 32:46 after a tussle for the top spot.

The 21-year-old from Kirdford said: “I ran this race last year and I was sixth or seventh. I’m not pleased with my time. I was hoping to get it down to 32 minutes.

“But I had to run on my own for most of the race. The conditions were good.

"I was expecting it to be windy over the second half but it was the opposite. The wind was against you on the way out. I preferred that.

“This is a nice course. It’s very fast with a lot of of support. It was the best of all the races I ran last year, which is why I came back.”

Well-known local race winner James Baker was second in 32:51. Mike Houston came in third in 33:41.

The race was the 24th to take place and the first to be organised by Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners with help from the previous organisers at Bognor Hotham Rotary Club.

Race director Judith Bazeley said: “It’s been nine months of committee work, with 15 people from Tone Zone and five from the Rotary club. And we spent two years building up to this. I’m pleased everybody had a good race.

“The moment the race hit me when I all saw all the Tone Zone Runners being photographed before the race. Then, it’s a case of being relieved to start on time."

The new organisers brought in new branding, new medals and goody bags for the finishers. They also made changes to the post-race facilities in West Park.

Among those who appreciated the set-up were the nuns on the run BROS Musical Production members, Sue Hawkins and Fiona Crowther. They ran in nuns' veils and with posters for the group’s Sister Act show at the Regis Centre this week on their backs.

Fiona, 53, who finished in about an hour and two minutes, said: “I’ve only run one race before and that was in Chichester.

This one is better. There was a lot more support, because it’s a course where that’s possible and the start, the parking – everything was good.”

Sue, 51, ran the course in 57:47 to just beat her time last year. She said: “We’ve got a full day’s rehearsal after the race. It’s much harder rehearsing for the show with all the choreography and the costume races than it was getting fit for the run.”

Probably the youngest runner on the day was Alfie Spurle, of Aldwick, whose 15th birthday last July meant he reached the minimum age. He was 23rd in 38:19 in a break from his GCSEs revision at The Regis School.

He said: "This was a good start for my first 10k.

“I try to run most days. It’s a good way to get away from my revision. I sat five of my 11 exams last week and I think they went all right,” he said.

` New firefighters TWO NEW firefighters have joined the crews at Bognor Regis Fire Station.

Tom Williams and Kerrie Lewis have taken part in a pass out parade among 12 full-time firefighters.

The celebration at Horley Fire Station gave the recruits the chance to showcase their new skills to their family and friends as well as senior managers from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

Before the course, Tom worked as a ground operations assistant at Goodwood aerodrome and was a retained firefighter.

Kerrie has previously worked as a duty manager and lifeguard trainer and assessor in the leisure industry.

Another recruit, Satpal Nagi, from Felpham, used to work in the health and fitness industry.

The course saw them embark on a mixture of practical and theoretical training to ensure they have the skills and knowledge they need to protect residents.

West Sussex chief fire officer Gavin Watts said: "We've been lucky enough to see this group's strong work ethic and sheer determination throughout their training journey."

Students' record donations set to help cancer patients LUNG cancer patients could be given the gift of life thanks to generous Felpham Community College students.

The college's sixth form charity committee has brought in the highest amount of donations in at least a decade from its latest charity week.

The £5,305 was split into £1,670 donations to three charities - Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

Jayne Bowater, voluntary chairman of Cancer Research UK's Relay for Life Portsmouth, told students at the presentation: "This £1,600 will pay for a clinical trial into lung cancer for two months.

"Lung cancer is one of the priorities for the charity and we are targeting radiotherapy treatment, which is about trying to prevent cancer from coming back after surgery.

"It's absolutely amazing you can fund that trial for two months."

Tracy Bowdery, a community fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House, and BHF Sussex fundraising manager Nicky Seevaraj also spoke about the effects the students' hard work would have on their respective causes.

Michelle Kelly, an assistant headteacher at the college, said: "This is the most charity week has raised for the past ten years. The charity committee worked really hard and the Year 7 students got very involved this year."

The donations were presented at a ceremony in the college last week.

The charity committee members included next year's joint chairmen Megan Balcombe and Harry Triggs.

Megan, 17, said: "It's staggering to hear that what we have been doing can make such a difference to saving someone's

life. It's very interesting to find out where that money is going."

Staging charity week, which involves all the college 1,000-plus students, took a lot of work, she said.

She said: "It needs a really close-knit group of students because you have to work hard together and you need a good

Flying the flag during wedding celebrations THOUSANDS of people turned up to Hotham Park on Saturday to watch the royal wedding between Harry and Meghan Markle.

The event, hosted by Bognor Regis Town Council, was a huge success, with people travelling to Bognor Regis from across the county.

A big screen was erected next to the Hotham Park Cafe and visitors turned up with picnic blankets and deck chairs to witness the special occasion in glorious sunshine.

Among the guests was newly elected town mayor, Cllr Stephen Reynolds, and his partner, Kim Stone.

He said: "The weather has made people turn out for this wonderful occasion. It is a bit windy but there are very few clouds in the blue sky today.

"It is really good to see so many people out with bright colours in the sunshine.

"Our pet alpaca, Rupert, would have loved to have been here today but unfortunately he couldn’t make it today as he had prior engagements, mainly on guard watching the chickens."

Kim added: "It is wonderful to see so many people out here on a Saturday morning and everyone is very peaceful.

"I really like the traditional London bus as a fish and chip bus, it's very traditional."

Crowds joined in on the gospel singing on the big screen of popular song, "Stand

By Me" and everyone stood for the national anthem in the afternoon.

Claudine Butt and her husband, James, travelled from Hambrook to Hotham Park to watch the wedding with their two children, Orla, aged eight, and threeyear-old Erin.

Claudine said: "I wanted to come somewhere nice and open to watch the wedding with my family.

"I'm enjoying the wedding with some friends we have met here and it's been a lovely day.

"We have never been to Hotham Park before, we don't come to Bognor Regis much, but it's a lovely park with loads of things to do."

James said: "There is lots to do for children which is great. There is a real sense of community here."

An ice-cream van was parked next to the screen which proved highly popular and a circus tent kept children entertained.

Sound doesn't ruin big day HUSBAND and wife, Matt Tarrant and Claire, from North Bersted, were joined by friends, Sharon John, from Pagham, and Brenda Glendenning from Felpham.

Claire said: "We did the park run this morning wearing silly Union Jack hats and flags.

"Brenda was marshalling and put the Harry mask and a high vis jacket on a bollard!

"Matt and I cycled over here and saw lots of flags in people's windows and bunting out.

"We did the park run, had a lovely breakfast in the cafe and then got a good spot here to watch the wedding.

It's been a lovely atmosphere."

Sharon added: "The sound could have been a bit louder but it's still been amazing.

"It's great to have got the community together like this. It's really popular, everyone has been talking about it.

"We have had sunshine and blue sky to enjoy the day. Everyone here has been lovely and really got into the big day."

Kirsten Fitzpatrick, events officer for Bognor Regis Town Council, said: "The Rroyal wedding event in Hotham Park was very well attended, with over 2,000 people enjoying the sunshine and the spectacular occasion broadcast on the big screen. Lots of people bought picnics along with them, but for

Surgeon saves lives in hospital in Kenya f The winning bridge team with their trophy

Top bridge team win their division BRIDGE players from Bognor Regis have become champions.

A team from Bognor Bridge Club has won division three of the Sussex League, run by the Sussex County Contract Bridge Association.

The victorious team of John Austin, Paul Londesborough, Roger Bill and Ron Seymour won all their matches against teams from across the county.

Paul, the team's captain, said: "Bridge is a fascinating card game. Not only does it keep your mind sharp but

it is also a great social game.

"Being able to play bridge at The Bognor Club, a very friendly club and such lovely surroundings, contributed to our success."

The Bognor Bridge Club meets at the club, 2 Sudley Road, on Monday and Thursday evenings, as well as Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

Starting in September, John will be running a beginners bridge class on Wednesdays. The Bognor Club also has a snooker section.

A LEADING orthopaedic consultant surgeon from a Chichester hospital has returned from helping to save lives in an African country.

Simon Cavanagh, who specialises in upper limb and shoulder surgery, volunteered to perform operations at a hospital in Kenya.

He used his extensive skills to perform much-needed procedures in the area where Maua Missionary Hospital is located. He carried out a number of different surgeries. These included hand replantation procedures, thoracicabdominal surgery and Caesarian sections.

Workers at many local government hospitals were on strike at the time. This meant his skills were vital to residents who needed medical assistance.

Mr Cavanagh joined the humanitarian organisation, SIGN Fracture Care International, which provides orthopaedic care in developing countries. The surgeons who work with it develop the knowledge of those in the countries in which they work so they can provide effective orthopaedic surgery.

He said: "SIGN is a tremendous organisation to be a part of and I am so grateful I was able to represent the charity in Kenya.

"The equipment they kindly provided me with meant I was able to be of great assistance to those who were in desperate need of surgery.

"Due to the vast amount of gang violence and frequency of road traffic

accidents in Kenya, there is a huge demand for trauma and orthopaedic surgeons."

Mr Cavanagh plans to travel to Phnom Penh in Cambodia at the end of this year

to continue this work.

SIGN was founded by Lewis Zirkle, who trained Vietnamese civilians after the war and recognised the need for continuing support.

No doubt that self-belief is vital to a person's success SELF-BELIEF is that positive feeling you have inside that you are capable of anything. You feel empowered, confident and fuelled with virility in the face of challenges and problems.

If you don’t have self-belief, and feel negatively about yourself you probably find that you let many things go by undone or opportunities seem to pass you by. Sound familiar? How many things have you let slip by because you lacked belief and doubted yourself?

Doubts such as: “Can I really do this? Other people are far better suited than me, so they probably should do it.” or “What will others think if I do or say this?” or“I really can’t… ” Or, “I don’t

deserve this.”

And you’re probably right. Because you’ll always and only get the job, or the life that you deep down believe you deserve.

But if you want more, you need to stop telling yourself that you can’t or don’t deserve it, or that someone else is better at it, or wishing you were like anyone else.

This Is What Happens If You Have Self-Belief It lets you cope with setbacks by seeing them for what they are: temporary and not the end of the world. If you believe you can reach your goals and ambitions then your mind operates with the highest possible amount of receptivity to detect opportunities. When you have clear goals you start to notice all the elements needed to reach them, simply because the clarity of your goals gives meaning to those elements as they reveal themselves to you.

Self-belief finds creative solutions.

When you approach a problem and feel anxious about it, your thinking becomes foggy and clogged, which makes finding good solutions less probable.

Self-belief makes you relax and think clearly. It stimulates reasoning, memory, and creativity; making it more likely you’ll find good solutions.

Self-belief stimulates action and persistence.

It’s hard to put in the consistent work needed to reach any worthwhile goal if you don’t have selfbelief. And when you fail, you confirm this lack of belief. But if you believe in yourself, you feel motivated to take action and sustain it over long periods of time. You’ll be able to see mistakes or setbacks as a part of the process and keep on going, which will reinforce your self-belief. If you ask someone for something and you believe they’ll give it to you, they will sense the conviction and be more inclined to respond to your request. If you lack belief, your request will be hesitant, which makes it more likely to be rejected.

How to Develop Self-Belief The ideal recipe for building self-belief is the combination of developing yourself, challenging yourself, and thinking about yourself in more constructive ways that represent who you are.

You were born with no sense of what you could or couldn’t do. Re-examine and discard many of the limiting ideas you have about your abilities, and find out why you have this disbelief in the first place.

Set bold but realistic goals.

Setting unrealistically high goals and not meeting them is detrimental to self-belief. If you demand too much, too fast, it will backfire. So set realistic smaller goals, with easy steps to achieve them. When you reach a goal, set a higher one. Gradually aim higher as you achieve them. And with each step forward, you’ll build more and more self-belief. Always research each step thoroughly for clarity to make sure it will get you there.

Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments.

Spend time thinking about your strengths and abilities (this also will help you improve your selfimage). Celebrate your wins with the things you love doing, go out for dinner, watch a good movie, meet up with friends.

Stop comparing yourself to others.

No matter how good you are at something, there will always be somebody better than you. And if you focus on this, it will sabotage your self-belief. And always comparing yourself to people who are worse than you will simply inflate your ego again. Stay away from comparing yourself to others; instead, focus on meeting your own goals and improving yourself.

Learn from those who have gone before.

Find mentors who have been where you desire to

go and learn from them. Make yourself vulnerable to do whatever it takes to learn — and accept it now and then when they criticize you. It’s all in the name of learning and growing, and becoming better and better every day.

I am joining two experts in this field in a three-hour talk from 6pm at Everyone Active, (formerly The Westgate Centre) in Chichester.

It will be a very informative evening around mental health issues. The aim is to provide you with the tools you can use to help you through challenging times.

It will teach important lessons about anxiety, stress and depression, how to grow your self-belief, how to strengthen your mind and body with the correct nutrition, and how to help combat and clear stress, and anxiety and emotional barriers, with our expert, Jemima Eames.

We have chosen to use a small room for this first talk (30 people maximum) as we want to keep it more intimate and low key this time. We are planning a larger event over two days, later in the summer, which could really help to change your life.

I have worked with Steve Neale (the owner of Steve Neale international) in many countries for 10 years now, and he is the best in his field. This is a very rare opportunity to hear him speak, and he is only in Chichester for a fleeting two days. This is one not to be missed.

POST wedding euphoria and this week, in the interests of parsimony, I looked for somewhere offering a generous current discount and was delighted to find that M&S are offering 25 per cent off the purchase of six bottles or more and all prices quoted reflect the offer.

For just six pounds expended, the 2016 Bourgogne Chardonnay proved to be a medium-bodied fruit - driven dry burgundy enriched by some subtle oaking - a very alluring wine which exceeded my expectations and, at this price, is a good introduction to white burgundies!

My next selection for circa £6.13 was a 2016 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi from the Marche region of Italy and exuded rich summer-fruit flavours with pear to the fore, had a floral lift, was slightly creamy and delectably refreshing - a good pair with fish pie and another good buy!

My last white wine choice was that of a 2016 Quadro Sei Single Estate Gavi which turned out to be unoaked, crispy fresh

and young with pear and green apple on the palate and of a good vintage and on offer for £7.50 - eminently quaffable!

In terms of reds, I found an unusual combination of an Argentinian Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Tupungato

Zorzal from young winemakers at the foot of the volcano Tupungato on offer at £7.38. This wine did not remotely disappoint and was dry and rich with a hint of tobacco, had a good nose and oozed wild berries with a touch of spice.

For my second red, I ventured to try a Portuguese wine in the form of a Quinto De Fafide Douro Reserva Tinto on offer for £8.20 - a country we must not overlook as a red wine producer.

This particular Douro is velvety smooth and the wine evolves on the palate with a touch of vanilla spice culminating in a strong aftertaste. My final red selection on offer for £10.90 was that of a 2012 Château Blaignan Cru Bourgeois Médoc.

1. Put the prawns in a bowl.

Put the chilli, garlic, coriander stalks (snip these up using scissors first) and caster sugar in a spice grinder or small food processor and whizz together. Add half of the lime juice and the fish sauce, then pour this over the prawns.

2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok, add the ginger and spring onions and fry for 1 min.

Add the red pepper and fry for 1 min, until the pepper starts to soften.

Add the water chestnuts and bean sprouts, and toss together until the

bean sprouts start to wilt.

Add the soy sauce and a really good grind of black pepper, then tip the lot into a serving dish.

3. Heat the remaining oil in the wok and add the prawns, lifting them out of their juices. Toss for 1-2 mins until they turn pink, add the marinade and swirl the wok quickly, then tip the lot onto the veg. Snip over the coriander leaves and sprinkle on the remaining lime. Serves over noodles with extra lime for squeezing over.

INGREDIENTS For the pastry • 175g plain flour, plus extra for rolling • 85g cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces • 1 tbsp caster sugar • 2 egg yolks

For the filling • 100g caster sugar • 140g butter • 2 eggs, beaten • 140g ground almond • 50g plain flour • 3 peaches, sliced • peach preserve or apricot jam • crème fraîche, to serve

Method 1. To make the pastry, rub together the flour and butter until it looks like fine breadcrumbs, then mix in the sugar. Add 1 egg yolk and 1 tsp water, followed by the next yolk and 1 tsp water until the dough just comes together. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for 30 mins.

2. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface until big enough to line a 23cm tart tin. If the dough rips, simply patch it up. Cut away the excess pastry. Line with greaseproof paper, fill with baking beans, then bake for 10 mins. Remove

paper and beans. Prick quite a few holes in the base of your tart, then bake for another 10-15 mins until biscuity.

3. While the pastry cooks, make the filling. Whisk the sugar and butter together until you get a pale paste. Beat in the eggs and finally add the almonds and flour.

Spoon into pastry case, arrange the peach slices across the top in a pattern and bake for 30-40 mins until golden. When cool, brush your preserve or jam across the top. Serve with a little pot of crème fraîche on the side and eat it quick before anyone else gets their hands on it!

Community News & Views INSPIRATIONAL individuals, valued volunteers and terrific teams working in hospitals in Chichester, Worthing and Shoreham are being put forward for special recognition.

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is inviting nominations for its annual staff recognition awards which recognise the best of its 10,000-strong workforce.

Members of the public, patients, supporters and trust colleagues can put forward a person they believe deserves to be considered for a Patient First STAR Award.

Trust chief executive Marianne Griffiths said: "Our Patient First STAR Awards are hugely uplifting for staff and volunteers and it truly is a very special accolade to be nominated for an award. Each year we receive more and more nominations from patients and relatives who wish to say thank you to a member of staff, volunteer or care team for going above and beyond.

"Such heartfelt nominations mean so much to those who receive them. So, I urge anyone who wishes to recognise the outstanding contribution of staff at Western Sussex Hospitals to make a difference and make a nomination before the midnight on June 3 closing date."

There are 11 categories from which to choose.

These include: Patient's Champion - for staff who embody and exceed the Patient First values of being kind, respectful, professional, friendly, compassionate and working well in a team; Extra Mile award - for staff showing an exemplary attitude to patient care, service delivery, going above and beyond, and respecting the diverse cultures of the trust's patients and/or colleagues; Volunteer of the year - for volunteers who have made a major difference to a patient, relative, colleague or team Nominations should be made at: westernsussexhospitals.nhs. uk/Awards

SOME £60,000 has been raised by cyclists who conquered the South Downs to help two hospices.

A total of 425 people cycled either 30km or 60km in the second annual Hit the Downs Mountain Bike (MTB) event in aid of St Barnabas House Hospice in Worthing and Chestnut Tree House - the children's hospice for Sussex and south east Hampshire.

With the sponsorship still coming in, the event is set to raise around £23,000 for St Barnabas and £36,000 for Chestnut Tree House Hospice.

This will cover five days of all care services provided by Chestnut Tree House and 14 days of day care at St Barnabas House.

Kev Mason, pictured above, was one of the cyclists who completed the 60km route to raise money for Chestnut Tree House. He has raised £705 so far in memory of his daughter, Poppy. He said the event had been tough.

"Chestnut Tree House supported my wife and I in July, 2017, when we lost our daughter.

"Our world imploded and Chestnut Tree House were there for us, they supported us. They helped us get our lives back on track," he said.

"The grief doesn't go away but we're in a better place. We're really grateful for the support we received and they've helped us a lot."

Among those helping Barnabas House was Nick Laudram, who rode with Steve Bosley, Kelvin Fry and Jon Funnell as the Buddington Bottom Bikers. Between them, they have raised more than £2,000 for St Barnabas House.

Nick said: "My father-in-law, Ray Oakley, was looked after a few years ago (by St Barnabas House). The care he received was amazing. We've all got connections to the hospice over many years and it's a great thing to raise money for. You realise, all this money that's raised, they neeed every penny."

THE internationally renowned landscape photographer, Charlie Waite, passed on some tips at the biggest ever meeting of Middleton Camera Club.

The idea for the special visit to the club arose after Charlie saw its pop-up exhibitions in empty shops in the town.

A club spokesman said: "From there, it grew into the largest ever event held by the club.

"With 150 guests to accommodate, we were thrilled when Father William Marston offered the use of St Nicholas Church in Middleton, which provided the perfect venue.

MORE than £1,000 has been raised for St Wilfrid’s Hospice by a man from Chichester.

Jamie Robertson took part in the Moonlight Walk earlier this month to raise funds after he lost his mother to cancer just a few weeks before.

Donations, which have been flooding in to Jamie's Everyday Hero web page, have now reached £1,265.49.

Jamie completed the ten mile walk with his girlfriend Zoe Smith, pictured above.

He said: "The nurses who work at the hospice made a huge impact on myself, my

DEMENTIA researchers have called for more residents in the Post area to volunteer for studies into the condition.

A great deal of research into the devastating condition is underway across south-east England, but efforts to discover new treatments can be hindered if researchers cannot find people willing to take part.

Dr Naji Tabet, the National Institute of Health Research's (NIHR) clinical research network Kent, Surrey and Sussex dementia specialty lead, said: "I recognise the only way to advance the treatment for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias is through the laborious work of clinical trials and through the kind volunteering of patients to take part in such trials. Research studies give hope to patients and carers by giving them opportunities to help themselves and help future patients, although we need to encourage more patients with dementia to sign up."

Dr Ramin Nilforooshan is a consultant psychiatrist for older adults and a dementia lead for the NIHR. He said: "Every patient should be given the right to participate in research if they would like a new treatment.

"I look forward to ten years' time when I can see the new advances in dementia care which are in place due to results we are hoping to have from current trials."

More than 2,500 people from Kent, Surrey and Sussex have volunteered to help to improve the lives of people with dementia and their families.

HUNTER PARTON is my son and Don Parton is my dad. Don is 94 and lives in King George Gardens in Chichester with my mum, who is 90.

Hunter, aged ten, from north Devon, would like to say a big thank-you to the people of Chichester, after they helped his grandad post a card to him celebrating his school report.

Hunter, who lives with me in Bideford, was chuffed to receive a glowing annual report from his teacher, proving he's come a long way since finishing treatment for leukaemia 18 months ago. During nearly four years of chemotherapy for cancer, Hunter missed a lot of school and worked hard to catch up.

His grandad, Don Parton, who is 94, and lives in King George Gardens, decided to send Hunter a card to say well done but at 94 this was more of an ordeal than he'd anticipated. Thanks to some kind strangers along the way, however, he completed the challenge.

First, Don caught the Sammy bus into Chichester - a service he and his 90 year old wife are thankful for daily - and hobbled into Marks and Spencer to find a card. Suffering from poor eyesight, he asked a woman browsing the cards to find one for him which she did. Next, he struggled down to the post office but found he couldn't see to actually write inside it. He called on the help of another kind stranger, who wrote his message for him and addressed it.

Don set off for the bank and withdrew a crisp £20 note which he popped inside. His final task was to post the card. But again, his eyesight defeated him. A passer-by came to his aid one last time, crossing the busy road for him and waving the card before popping it in a letter box.

The card arrived safe and sound much to Hunter's delight, thanks to the effort of the good people in Chichester!

Road's name recalls its ownership by royalty Estate was the centre of entertainment for town's gentlemen AT A point in time when there are many various discussions about royalty, I thought I would look nearer home this week. It is evident certain aspects of Sir Richard Hotham’s dream did come true - that of royalty coming to his seaside resort.

One such family was namely Bowes-Lyon and one member was born Elizabeth BowesLyon, who eventually married the Duke of York, who became King George V, and it was her grandfather, Claude Bowes-Lyon, whose name is most associated with the town.

It wasn’t until 1862 that his association with the area began, when he bought Sudley Cottage – known as Sudley Villa – in Bognor. Like many people, it was to be his seaside residence. He ultimately enlarged the premises and was known to have given it a nickname –The Den – as a pun on his name of Lyon.

He very soon became a member of the Bognor Local Board of Improvement Commissions.

He also became a Sussex justice of the peace and chairman of the Bognor Promenade Pier Company. This was the company which built the pier.

It was his wife, the Hon Mrs Lyon, who performed the driving in of the first pile of the pier on April 23, 1864. On completion of the pier, Claude Bowes-Lyon performed the opening of this new seaside attraction for the

town on May 4, 1865.

Just four months after this event, on September 13, 1865, he inherited the title of 13th Earl of Strathmoon after the death of his brother and took over the family seat of Glamis Castle. As a mark of their respect, the people of Bognor provided a dinner for the new Earl of Strathmore, at the Assembly Rooms in Sudley Road.

The dinner was arranged by the gentlemen and tradesmen of the town and was attended by about 100 people. A report in a newspaper of 1866 recalled 'the banquet was intended as an expression on behalf of the inhabitants of Bognor generally of the estimation in which the noble lord has been held'.

While making visits to Glamis Castle, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore appear to have resided in Bognor for a few years, as reports indicate, telling of their entertaining of Bognor gentry and residents.

A report from June 18, 1868, talks of 'A Gay Day at the Den', when a number of local people were entertained with the band of the 3rd Hussars who were ‘quartered at Chichester'.

Their guests were also encouraged to have a game of croquet. Following this event, it is reported the couple travelled north to Glamis Castle. A further report in 1869 described how 'Cards of invitation were issued by the Earl and

Countess of Strathmore among the gentry of the town and its vicinity for a visit to “The Den”, when a meeting of a happy kind took place at his lordship’s marine residence'. Apparently, the event ‘made the day a happy one to all assembled'.

The Earl of Strathmore had acquired various pockets of land around his home, much of which ran down to the sea, and this area was called the Strathmore Park Estate. Today, we have many reminders of his associations with the town, with such names as Lyon Street, Glamis Street, which contains Strathmore Gardens and Lyon Villas. There is also Strathmore Terrace in William Street and, finally, Sidlaw Terrace, within Clarence Road.

It was because of his ownership of this land along the seafront he and the Local Board had a disagreement. Early in 1869, severe storms damaged the sea defences and his estate. Earl Strathmore considered the local authority should be liable for the repairs. While eventually there was a mutual agreement, it was soon after this incident that the Strathmores left Bognor.

Another reminder of Earl Strathmore’s association with the town is Den Avenue, which was developed within The Den grounds in the 1920s. Also still surviving today is the original gate lodge situated on the corner of the High Street and Den Avenue. It is a flintfaced building and was erected by him.

The Den, which was built in the period 1827–30 for the Earl of Arran, had numerous residents before Claude Bowes-Lyon.

Following their departure, a number of people seemed to own the house, occupying it only during the summer seasons. Eventually, in

the 1890s, it was purchased by the Grisewood family, who remained there until it was sold in 1922.

For the next four years, it became known as The Den Hotel. Advertising for the hotel exploited the fact that the Early of Strathmore had at one time been the owner, and during this period visitors were reminded of 'the garden parties, fetes, etc' that occurred there with previous owners.

The advertising continued, 'the sea is within 300 paces of the Lodge entrance and is beautifully sheltered, cool in summer and warm in winter – a veritable suntrap'. It was purchased in 1926 and transformed into a school run by Mrs Walter Ward, who was the founder of the Norland Institute for training children’s nurses.

Sales particulars around this time gave an indication of the size of The Den, describing it as a ‘large old-fashioned residence’ and the total property consisted of 27 bedrooms, five bathrooms and nine reception and living rooms. The sale particulars described the property and the nearby facilities, and suggested that it would be an admirable site for a school, nursing or convalescent home.

Sadly, this did not occur and the house was left to decay and the county council pulled it down after the war. There was apparently, within the building, an extremely fine wooden staircase that was removed just before demolition. I wonder where that is now?

There was also an annexe to The Den, which was situated nearer Lyon Street. Situated on the High Street are a number of smaller unusual homes, one of which is called Strathmore House, and is another flint-faced building.

Busy week of racing ahead with PostSport meets at Fontwell and Goodwood HORSE racing fans are in for a bumper bank holiday weekend as competition comes to Goodwood and Fontwell.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to both local tracks as they host meetings which are sure to attract plenty of interest.

Today and tomorrow are the second and third days of Goodwood's annual Festival of Food and Racing (first race 2pm) featuring a range of top chefs and producers displaying their wares against the backdrop of some topnotch racing.

Then, on Sunday, Fontwell hosts its annual Big Bank Holiday Family Fun Day (first race 2.10pm) with a fairground, inflatables, face painting and pony rides all on offer.

Both fixtures will be under scrutiny after a brawl involving 50 people was caught on camera at Goodwood earlier this month. This has since sparked a national debate about the amount of alcohol and level of security at race tracks.

To combat any potential issues, Goodwood officials have confirmed there will be a police presence at every fixture for the rest of the season. In addition, security teams will be better identified in high-visibility clothing

and sniffer dogs will be deployed to combat drug use.

Speaking this week, Alex Eade, the general manager for Goodwood, said: "We have conducted a thorough and extensive review of everything that happened at our first fixture, of our existing policies, and held a detailed consultation with our safety advisory group and Sussex Police.

"We have also been working with the Racecourse Association and our other large independent racecourse colleagues to ensure we are part of the industry-wide crackdown on anti-social behaviour."

Fontwell's meeting is the first since May 17 when 55 runners went to post in a seven-race Hunter Chase card.

Among the winners were 12-year-oold Kimora, who won the opener to make it a hat-trick of victories in the race following successes in 2015 and 2016. Rose Loxton’s prospect, Monsieur Gibraltar, who was given a super confident ride from Lorcan Williams, to ease to victory in the fourth.

William Biddick rode home Wonderful Charm for Paul Nicholls to take the feature race by a length and a half.

DARTS: Dave Bourne threw just 30 darts in the standout performance of week five of the Bognor Summer Darts League.

But it was not enough to prevent his Aldwick Legion side from slumping to an 11-7 loss to BRSA Ravens.

TRAMPOLINIST Sofija Kalnicenko showed she can compete with the best in the UK as she took away a silver medal at a national competition.

The member of the Bognor-based Dragonflyers club performed three sensational routines with extreme height, precision, elegance and power to take second place at the Trampoline and Tumbling Spring Series 1 event at the International Centre in Telford.

The Chichester Free School pupil showed she was able to compete against performers from the UK's top clubs in the 13/14 yrs category.

The Dragonflyers trampolinist finished second in both compulsory routines and first in the voluntary with her high difficulty of 8.2 - scoring in excess of 90 marks for two routines and a fraction short of 131 over three.

It meant she finished just 0.6 marks behind the eventual winner, Emma Wilson, from the

Chorley-based Springfield Park Bouncers.

Kalnicenko has had an incredible start to the season having taken bronze at league one the previous week.

The week before that, she took ninth place at English qualifiers. During that time she has increased her score over the same routines by five whole marks, which coaches say is a 'massive gain in just two weeks'.

Coach Linda O'Leary described the improvement as 'sensational'.

Dragonflyers, who train most evenings at Bognor's The Regis School, compete at national competitions, league fixtures, plus English qualifiers and have proven themselves a challenge to any UK club.

This is despite having a small number of members, training a fraction of the hours with limited facilities.

O'Leary said: "The club are fortunate to have the support of The Regis School and financial help from Cars of Littlehampton, helping flyers go from strength to strength."

BOWLS: Bognor men are through to the next round of the National Top Club competition after beating Arundel. They won four of the five disciplines and play Tarring Priory in the next round.

Gerry Stevens won the two wood singles 17-9, while Bob Daley won for four wood singles 21-11.

In the doubles, Mike Philpott and John Whitfield lost 17-22 but Keith Taylor, Len Hall and Trevor Moore won the triples 21-12 while Mick Conolly, Richard Robinson, Nick Hatfield, Ron Gardner came out on top in the fours 16-9.

Elsewhere, in their first West Sussex league game, Bognor A played Chichester A. They won on two rinks and lost on two rinks and lost overall by eight shots, scoring four league points.

Meanwhile, Bognor-based RAFA bowls club has started their bowls season with mixed results.

They picked up four points after beating Storrington Bowls Club 3230 away in the first game of the BML Division 1 League.

However, they lost matches against Maltravers, Middleton and Crablands in recent weeks.

Bognor and RAFA faced off against each other in a mixed friendly last week which saw Bognor win on three rinks.

In West Sussex Bowls Division One tomorrow, Bognor A travel to Worthing, while in Division Three Middleton host Petworth.

On Sunday, Division Two side Bognor B welcome Pulborough to Waterloo Square. All matches start at 2pm.

Wright excited for next year CHICHESTER City Ladies boss Matt Wright says he is excited for next season despite his side ending the campaign with a 4-1 loss to champions Charlton Athletic.

In their first season in the third tier of women's football, the Green and Whites have proved to be more than a match for more seasoned opponents.

After collecting 28 points, City finished eighth in the 12 team FA Women's Premier League South, which easily guarantees their status at that level.

After a season where a number of young players were given first team experience, Wright said the club would be a lot stronger for the next campaign.

The City manager said: "We're over the moon and what we've achieved is more than we were expecting.

"The girls have been outstanding, the backroom staff too. Everyone has been outstanding and I can't doubt their commitment."

Chi's defeat at Charlton rounded off a busy end of the season, which saw them win just one of five matches.

With a number of first

team players missing out through injury, Wright said it highlighted a lack of squad depth.

But he was delighted with the impact of development squad players, such as 17-year-old Alice Walford, who played all 90 minutes of the loss to the champions.

Wright said: "This season has gone on and on and on - to be playing May 20 is absurd.

"We have pre-season starting in four weeks and it is not setting us up well for next year.

But, to their credit, the girls have been fantastic."

Despite the 4-1 loss at the Addicks, a depleted City had their chances, hitting the bar three times in the first half.

Natasha Stephens eventually grabbed a consolation for Chi. Speaking after the match, Wright said: "Charlton are a quality side, definitely the best we faced in this division.

"Looking at what we have to come next year it's exciting.

"We're not at full strength and have struggled to get people fit, yet we are still giving Charlton a game.

"There are a lot of teams who have not given Charlton a game this season and we did today for long periods."

MIDDLETON CC head to Brighton & Hove tomorrow (12pm) in the Sussex Premier Division looking to follow up an excellent 70-run win over reigning champions East Grinstead.

Skipper Sean Heather led the way in sealing the club's first win of the season, taking four for 26 as the visitors were all out for just 125.

Middleton now travel to second-place Brighton & Hove, looking to chalk up back-toback wins in what is shaping up to be a very competitive division.

Things did not start too well for Heather's side at Sea Lane last weekend. They chose to bat against an EG attack featuring former Sussex players Lewis Hatchett and Fynn Hudson-Prentice. After a strong opening spell, Middleton were reduced to 55-4 as their early-season troubles with the bat continued.

But overseas player Mahesh Rawat showed his worth, producing a thrilling counter-attack to hit 63 from just 57 balls. His debut halfcentury for the club along with a contribution from Craig Fowle (28*) helped Middleton post 195 all out. In reply, Heather led the charge, with Fowle (2 for 17) and Nick Smith (2 for 6) chipping in as EG managed just 125.

Bognor take the derby spoils

CHICHESTER Priory Park will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after being stunned by local rivals Bognor Regis.

The visitors returned to the coast from Goodwood with all 30 points after producing the perfect away performance in the Sussex Division Two match-up.

After bowling out Jay Hartard's side for just 162, Bognor knocked off the runs within 30 overs to chalk up a convincing six-wicket win.

Priory, who drop from top to seventh in the ten-team league, now head to leaders Mayfield tomorrow (12.30pm) looking to get

their season back on track.

Bognor, meanwhile, who are buoyed after their first victory of the season, will welcome Ansty to The Regis Oval (12.30pm).

After winning the toss and putting Chi into bat, the visitors wasted no time in getting to business.

Led by West Indian import Marquino Mindley (4 for 15), the Regis attack swiftly reduced Priory to 31-5.

It was left to Hartard (70) and Magnus Kristensen (30) to rebuild as the pair put on 88 for the sixth wicket.

But no-one else was able to reach double figures as the Bognor tail mopped up the tail to reduce the home side to a score of 162 all out.

In reply, Chi struggled to peg the visitors scoring as Charlie Laforet (41) and a hardhitting half-century from Bognor skipper Ryan Maskell (79* from 54 balls) saw them home with plenty to spare.

In Division Three West, Pagham are looking for their first win in three matches when they welcome Findon to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (12.30pm).

Stuart Hanks' side suffered last time out as they were heavily defeated by 97 runs at West Chiltington & Thakeham.

The only thing Pagham got right on the day was winning the toss. But, once the home side were put into bat, they quickly took charge.

Peter Cotterill (3 for 24) and Sean Rutter (5 for 32) did perform well for Hanks' side.

But any hope of keeping West Chilt under 200 were dashed by an 89 sixth-wicket partnership by Tim Van Noort (69) and Richard Harrison (64).

The home side were eventually dismissed for 232 in 44.2 overs.

In reply, Pagham never really got going and were reduced to 73-7 as West Chilt's attack found movement off the pitch.

A late charge from Pagham's tail - with Alex Mackay at number 10 hitting 26 to be their top scorer - eventually lifted them to 135 all out.

Golden weekend for Chichester athletes CHICHESTER Runners returned from the Sussex County Track and Field Championships with a clutch of medals and a host of personal best performances.

Several of Chichester’s athletes were in action on both days at Crawley, making the most of the opportunity to compete against the best athletes in the county.

Among the standout performers was Oliver Beach, who tackled four events in the U15 age group. He set a new personal best of 40.43 seconds to gain a silver medal in the 300 metres. He then gained another silver in the shot with a 10.47 metres effort before striking gold in the discus with a throw of 32.82m, just 17 centimetres ahead of his nearest rival.

In the middle distances, Liam Dunne was

third in the 800m. He was then edged out in the 1500m, despite knocking more than 10 seconds off his best from 2017 with a time of 4 minutes 48 seconds.

Chichester’s middle distance U20 pairing of Leo Stallard and Ben Morton also had a good club battle in the 5000m, finishing first and second respectively. Their impressive times of 16 mins 16 and 16 mins 17 push them into the UK top 20 at this stage of the season.

For the girls, Sophie Dudman (U15) was unlucky to be denied a medal in the 75m hurdles, being awarded the same time as the bronze medallist at 12.50 secs.

Olivia Toms was another who was just edged out with a fourth place in the 1500m with a good time of 5.01.98.

Portsmouth and Albion lined up for Bognor's pre-season BOGNOR'S pre-season plans are already shaping up with Premier League stars of the future among those set to visit Nyewood Lane.

Jack Pearce is very much in rebuilding mode after the Rocks suffered relegation from the National South last season.

With a year in the Isthmian Premier League to come, big question marks remain over who will be on the pitch and in the dugout for Bognor.

But one thing that is certain is that Brighton & Hove Albion under-23s, who are set to play next year against the best young teams in the land, will visit on July 17 (7.45pm kick off ).

The following week, on July 24, League One side Portsmouth are the visitors.

Both high-profile matches are set to bring bumper crowds, giving Pearce an extra cash boost as he looks to pull together a team for next season.

Rocks fans had some good news this week with the announcement that young defender Corey Heath has agreed terms for next season.

He joins Calvin Davies, Keaton Wood, Chad Field, Harvey Whyte and Tommy Scutt as one of six players to have re-signed for next season.

Heath, 22, endured a frustrating season after joining from Worthing last summer because of a persistent ankle injury.

But he said he was eager to resume training on July 22 to be in tip-top shape for the big

kick-off in August.

Heath, pictured left, said: “Re-committing to Bognor was an easy decision for me, even though I had an offer to go elsewhere. I want to play for the club, it’s as simple as that.

"And I want to play for our fantastic fans and give it a good go next season.

"There has been a lot said about relegation, and a lot of criticism for Jack. But players have a huge responsibility, too.

"Players come and go at every club and this one is no different. I’ve been pleased with who we’ve signed already and come pre-season training I’m confident we will have a good squad, and certainly one who can flourish in the division."

Pearce, who managed the side last season, said he had been speaking to a further four or five players this week.

The Post understands these include last year's fans' player of the season, Doug Tuck, and young player of the season, Tommy Block.

Pearce also revealed that Portsmouth coach and former Leeds striker Robbie Blake would replace Darin Killpartrick as first team coach.

He said: "We look forward to working alongside Robbie, who has gained valuable knowledge in a very respectable playing career and, of course, at Pompey as a coach.

"It's always exciting to bring on board people who we believe can bring fresh ideas and new energy, and Robbie certainly fits the bill."

'Isthmian is where we belong' AFTER gaining promotion to National South 12 months ago, Rocks boss Jack Pearce never wanted a return to the Isthmian Premier League. But, when relegation came and the prospect of an FA restructure was on the horizon, the veteran manager was happy to regain a place among familiar foes.

Dropping back down the non-league ladder is always full of uncertainty, because of leagues being organised geographically.

But the FA's shake-up of step three and the creation of a new Midlands League meant that there was some concern the Rocks could be in the Southern League - facing a number of trips down to the West Country.

Instead, those fears have been put to one side as the Rocks' place in Isthmian, which covers the south east, was confirmed.

Pearce said: "We have always considered ourselves to be an Isthmian club - that's the league we wish to play in and it is our preferred choice, so we're pleased to return.

"If we had been put into the Southern, then that reduces our chances of trying to attract players from the Brighton area.

"We're also looking forward to local derbies with Worthing, Whitehawk, Lewes and Burgess Hill - that's four great local derbies."

IT'S NEARLY a month since the season ended in disappointment for the Rocks.

With next year seeing Bognor return to the Isthmian Premier, preparations are well underway on and off the pitch to make sure the club has every possible chance of a return to National South.

Here's the Post's guide to what's happening at Nyewood Lane over the summer months.

Who's on board for next year?

Bognor, like every nonleague club, will experience a change over at the end of the season. As soon as the season ends, club officials begin a frantic few weeks of agreeing terms with those players then want to retain.

Six players have already agreed terms for next season - Calvin Davies, Keaton Wood, Chad Field, Harvey Whyte, Tommy Scutt and Corey Heath. Talks with a number of other members of last year's squad are ongoing. Rocks fans should expect a number of new faces too!

Who's not returning?

Only two players have confirmed they will not be returning to the Nye Camp next season - but they are influential players who will be hard to replace. Skipper Sami El-Abd wants to be playing nearer his home north of Brighton while long-serving left back James Crane has joined Worthing saying he needs a new challenge.

What's happening with the manager / first team coach?

Last season club stalwart Jack Pearce reluctantly picked up the managerial reigns again at Nyewood Lane. But he, along with first team coach Darin Killpartrick, was unable to prevent the club from a swift return to the Isthmian Premier.

down, Pearce has moved quickly to appoint former Portsmouth coach Robbie Blake to the first team coach role.

The former Premier League striker, who joined Pompey in November 2015 and was retained by Kenny Jackett last season, brings plenty of experience to the role.

As for the manager, the word from Pearce is that this will be dealt with once the playing squad is sorted - so expect plenty of speculation to continue in the coming weeks.

When are the fixtures released?

The officials from the Isthmian league are yet to officially announce a date.

However, in previous seasons the full list is out in mid-July - giving Rocks fans plenty of time to pencil in derby days against Worthing, Burgess Hill, Lewes and Whitehawk.

With so many local matches, there's the promise of bumper crowds and a welcome cash boost to the Rocks' coffers.

When can I get my football fix again?

Pre-season preparations are being finalised by officials at the Nye Camp but two tasty pre-season matches have already been confirmed.

Portsmouth will bring a first team squad to Nyewood Lane on July 24. The week before, on July 17, Brighton & Hove Albion will bring their under23s side to the ground (both 7.45pm).

The rest of the pre-season schedule will see trips to Southern South side Gosport, Steve Claridge's Salisbury and Wessex Premier outfit Horndean.

And, there's the small matter of the World Cup, which while it will not feature any Rocks players does offer a feast of football to enjoy!
