Decision date set for homes D-DAY has been set for more than a thousand planned homes in Pagham.

Arun District Council has arranged a special meeting of its development control committee to discuss the four applications. The additional session will take place at 2.30pm on June 12 at the council's offices at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton.

The councillors at the meeting will make decisions on four major applications for

housing in Pagham.

One of the leading campaigners against the plans, Alan Pivett, pledged protestors would be present to watch the debates.

Pagham and Greenfields Action Movement (Pagam) vice-chairman Mr Pivett said: "We want to get one resident from each of the areas who are going to be most affected by the homes to speak at the committee. We will also try to get some of our members there.

"I will be sending a detailed dossier to each of the committee members to remind them of their responsibilities and the fact that they will be dealing with sites close to the Pagham Harbour local nature reserve."

The sites which will be debated at the meeting are Hook Lane with up to 300 homes, Pagham Road (up to 400), Sefter Road (up to 280) and Church Barton Farm, off Pagham Road (up to 65).

Pagam is holding an informal meeting from midday-3.30pm tomorrow at Pagham Village Hall to enable residents to find out more about the applications.

It is also staging a public meeting at 6pm next Friday at West Meads Community Centre in The Precinct.

MP Nick Gibb will be present along with representatives of Arun and Southern Water.

Seafront site for toilets criticised ACTION has been demanded to speed up the opening of new toilets on Bognor Regis seafront.

The past bank holiday weekend saw the town’s promenade packed with residents and visitors enjoying the sunny weather.

But any of those on the eastern section who wanted to relieve themselves were met with a hole in the ground.

The fenced-off site, opposite Walton Avenue, is set to be occupied by new unisex and disabled toilets to be installed

by Arun District Council.

Two banners on the fencing state they will be arriving by the summer season.

But Bognor Regis town councillor Jeanette Warr, pictured above, said: “This is just not acceptable. Where are people along here going to go to the toilet?

“It will be too late for small children to have to wait for the traffic to stop and walk across the road.

“I’d like to know how Arun define the summer season. We’re now in May. We’ve had one bank holiday weekend this month, with another one two weeks ago, and all people can see instead of public toilets is this hole.

“There’s no sign directing people to the loos in the Regis Centre on the opposite side of the road.

“It is disgraceful. There are no facilities for anyone on this part of the seafront.

I don’t know what visitors thought over the weekend when they decided to come here and saw this site on a popular stretch of the seafront.”

The new toilets – costing £200,000

- were agreed earlier this year at the second attempt by Arun’s councillors after protests from residents opposite that they faced looking at the building’s doors.

The loos are being built at the manufacturer and will be delivered ready to be installed.

They will replace separate underground sites for men’s and women’s toilets.

These are intact but have been closed

by Arun because it says they attracted vandalism and were prone to be flooded.

The unisex toilets will be built on the site of Arun’s demolished foreshore office – replaced by a smaller building to the west of the bandstand – and which contained the promenade’s only toilet for disabled people.

But Cllr Mrs Warr (LD, Hotham) said: “It doesn’t look like the new toilets will be ready for months. That means there will be no toilets for disabled people on the seafront. Anyone else would have kept the old facilities open until the new ones were ready. All we get from Arun is promises, promises, promises – but nothing materialises.”

Arun has apologised for any problems caused by the lack of seafront toilets.

The council expects to put in the foundations for the new toilets in June.

The building is expected to be fully working by the end of July in time for the school summer holidays.

In the meantime, the nearest public toilets are in the Regis Centre or Waterloo Square.

A WIDE selection of classical music created over 500 years will be featured in a concert in Bognor Regis tomorrow.

The event at Bognor Regis Music Club - An Evening with Jan Lewis and friends - will be presented by the club member and well-known musician.

The programme will also include three solo voices: Howard Weyman, a promising young baritone studying at the University of Chichester; tenor Peter Price, who will be singing works

by Vaughan Williams and Britten; and soprano Christine Henry, with arias from Bizet and Puccini operas.

Instrumental works will include a

Madeleine Dring trio played by oboist Colin Hartreet, flautist Alex Palmer and Jan on piano.

Solo works for clarinet, horn and piano will also be featured.

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "I am delighted that Jan Lewis has assembled such a talented group of musicians with local connections for this concert. For some of them, this will be their first visit to the club and we look forward to hearing their performances."

The concert is at 7pm tomorrow at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road in Bognor Regis.

Artists put skills on show again in church f Housing protestors at a proposed site

Rare bat is found

f Heidi Walmsley with one of her paintings on show DOZENS of painters put their works on show in Pagham’s latest art exhibition.

The bright bank holiday sunshine kept numbers of visitors to St Thomas a’Becket Church down compared to previous years. But the several hundred who went along still saw plenty that caught their eye.

Some 30-plus paintings were expected to have been sold by the close of the three-day event on Monday.

Organiser Trudi Kearsley said: “The weather has been too nice, really. I think everyone is on the beach. But the people who have come in are enjoying the quality of the work we have on show.”

A total of 290 paintings were on view in front of the altar when the exhibition opened. They covered a range of media and subjects.

“This is our 21st year of the exhibition,”

said Mrs Kearsley. “We are the only church in this year which has an art exhibition. The only other one we know about is at Birdham.

“Artists like displaying here because the light is quite good and the atmosphere is nice and friendly.”

Both the number of artists and works on view were less than 2017 – but Mrs Kearsley described that as a bumper year.

This means the amount set to be raised from the exhibition, including refreshment sales, was likely to be about £1,000 against £1,400 last year.

The church’s Raise the Roof appeal for essential repairs will again benefit from the exhibition.

One of the artists who continued to back the event was Middleton resident Heidi Walmsley, 58. She sold her tenth painting, out of six framed and ten unframed, just

after the opening of the last day.

“It’s a fantastic feeling,” she said. “I’ve been exhibiting here for 11 years and sold my first painting here. I still get the same satisfaction now as I did then.

“People say my paintings are so cheerful, bright and colourful. I just have a passion for painting and I feel that comes out in my work.

“Painting just relaxes me and I thank God every day that I can do it. If I wake up at 7am, I’ve got a paintbrush in my hand at ten minutes past.”

Other artists on show in the exhibition included John Crowley with the watercolour Broken Light Bognor, Kathie Stocker (Study in Brown, acrylic), Jean Wapshere (Bosham from Chidham, watercolour), Marjorie Good (Tea Break, acrylic) and Roger Donovan (Tranquillity, acrylic).

A RARE bat could halt plans for homes in Pagham.

A new survey of one of the area’s four sites earmarked for large-scale development has revealed the presence of one of the rarest bats in Europe.

The barbastelle is a woodland bat which is protected under the EU habitats and species directive and requires special measures for conservation. These include the designation of special areas for it.

It was one of six bat species recorded by two experts on just one night walking around the site in Sefter Road in an initiative funded by Pagham Parish Council as part of its campaign to fight the housing plans.

Parish council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall told the Pagham annual electors’ meeting he expected the findings to be a significant step in being able to stop the development.

He said: “The survey was one of the most important things we have done. It showed the presence of the barbastelle bat, which is on the red list of endangered species.”

Earlier surveys had also shown several other protected species of wildlife – including reptiles - lived in the Sefter Road field and another development site in Hook Lane.

“The developers want to translocate – or move – them to another site. But that does not work, “ said Cllr Radmall.

“You just can’t move the creatures somewhere else. That has happened before and they were just killed at their

new site.”

Cllr Radmall said he had met with a legal team of two solicitors and a barrister to decide what action to take about the survey results.

This could include a judicial review of the housing plans as a way of protecting the bats.

“One of the things that has also arisen is the issue of joint and several liability.

This is not just the people doing the damage to the wildlife but also those involved in making it happen,” he said.

“That includes aiding and abetting, counselling, causing, procuring and promoting it.

“This is all good grist to our mill. We want to promote these findings and do everything that will protect this parish from all sorts of inappropriate housing."

The latest survey was carried out at dusk on April 22 by David King and Sheila Wright, who both hold Natural England scientific bat licences.

They said: “Bats of six species were recorded, suggesting that this area is of local importance to bats, especially given its position surrounded by large arable fields and built up areas.

“It is recommended that further activity surveys are carried out, throughout the active season and that steps are taken to establish the relative abundance of bats and suitable bat habitat in the surrounding area."

The greatest level of activity was from pipistrelles. Two kinds were recorded during the survey from 8.39pm-9.24pm.

` Chairman again A UNANIMOUS vote has seen Cllr Lilian Richardson re-elected as Aldwick Parish Council's chairman.

Cllr Richardson was chosen to lead the council for a further year at its annual meeting on Monday.

She told her fellow councillors: "Thank you for your support. I really do appreciate it."

Cllr John Bass said Cllr Richardson had done a very good job in the past three years.

He was elected as her vicechairman. But he said he would be willing to step down if the previous vice-chairman, Cllr Stella Coppard, returned after some poor health.

Parishes are set to merge HISTORIC boundaries are set to be removed as Barnham and Eastergate councils become one.

The merger of the two local authorities is on course to take place this year.

If it goes ahead, the centuries-old administrative division between the two areas will be removed.

Eastergate Parish Council chairman Cllr Chris Allington welcomed the progress of the combining of the councils in December.

"I'm looking forward to a combined authority if it goes ahead. I've been working towards it for a number of years," he said.

"Half of what people think of as Barnham village is in Eastergate parish.

The situation disenfranchises people in my opinion. A large majority of people think they are in Barnham parish but they're not, due to boundaries which date back centuries."

The parish of Eastergate ends to the east at the stream which runs alongside the Barnham Trading Post shop to mean what is considered to be the village centre, as well as the railway station, are included. Barnham parish is focused around the 900-year-old St Mary's Church at the southern end of Church Lane.

A formal initial backing for the merger was given unanimously by Arun District Council's electoral review subcommittee last week. The final decision will be made a meeting of the full council in the next few months.

Arun group head of policy Jackie Follis told the sub-committee the merger had to follow strict legal procedures after the district council had agreed last January to start the process.

Letters were sent to Eastergate and Barnham residents two months ago.

The result of a ballot among them announced last month showed 80.59 per cent support among those who voted.

The turnout was 37.69 per cent.

"What is quite interesting is that the proportion in each parish voting in favour was identical. It couldn't be closer," she said. "I'm of the view that is indicative of a concensus in favour across both parishes."

She said Arun had to be satisfied that guidance from the Local Boundary Commission was being met. This included the impact on community cohesion of the merger, the population of the combined parish, public opinion and how the new council would be run.

The combined population of some 5,000 residents was near the middle of parishes in the district, she said.

The parish councils have agreed the new authority will have 13 members.

Sub-committee member Cllr John Charles (C, Barnham) said: "It's great the parish councils have done a lot of work and I think it's admirable the way they have done that work.

"This needs to be done. Half the people don't know where they are living. They think they are in Barnham but they are in Eastergate. This will clarify everything."

Primary pupils enjoy lessons in learning to broaden horizons PUPILS from primary schools around Westergate have been given the chance to find out about their future education.

The scores of Year 6 pupils have enjoyed unique enrichment weeks at Ormiston Six Villages Academy to prepare them for joining it this September.

The weeks have included the chance to take part in activities like ethical debating to stretch and inspire them, treasure hunts around the Lime Avenue site to develop their geography skills and sessions for music, science and the arts.

Academy principal Umbar Sharif said: "We have been delighted to welcome primary school pupils from the local area to the academy for our specially designed enrichment activities.

"We hope they will provide them with the confidence, knowledge and aspirations to successfully embark on their next steps to secondary school."

The enrichment programme builds on the academy's ongoing work with its area's primary schools.

It will culminate next month in a weeklong festival. The after-school activities will feature music tuition, 'mad science' sports coaching, debating and art.

The initiative follows what the academy designs as a significant increase in its next Year 7 intake after a 'Good' rating from Ofsted. "We look forward to welcoming them and making them feel part of the very special project we are building at Six Villages," added Ms Sharif.

Proud to foster A mother has spoken of her pride in being a foster carer ahead of this year’s Foster Care Fortnight.

The theme for this year’s national awareness campaign is ‘Proud to foster’ and will be run by The Fostering Network from May 14 to 27.

West Sussex County Council, which is looking for more people to consider fostering, especially teenagers and sibling groups, is backing the national campaign.

The council will be holding a number of drop-in and chat events for Foster Care Fortnight to meet people and answering any questions they may have about fostering.

The national awareness fortnight will also be highlighting the diversity of people who foster – including single carers, professionals who foster alongside work, and people from all backgrounds and religions.

Ahead of this, a West Sussex foster carer, Nikki has spoken of how her family decided to open their home to vulnerable children.

Nikki was inspired to foster children after her role as a sessional worker brought her into contact with foster carers and the children they supported.

She is particularly proud of her own son who has played a big part in fostering children. He was very young when they made the decision to foster.

Nikki said: “My own son has played more of a part than he realises. He has grown up more aware of the inequalities of life and it

has made him a better person.

“I have a really big community of other foster carers around me, some of whom we met all those years ago on our Skills to Foster training. And our social work support has been fantastic.”

Nikki and her family have supported a number of children over the years – many of whom they are still in touch with. They are currently fostering siblings on a longterm basis.

Nikki said: “People assume brothers and sisters will be there for each other but like all siblings, they don’t always get on. It can be a challenge, but with some therapeutic support we are getting there.

“We can be proud that their time with us allowed them to move on and make good attachments elsewhere.”

Australians visit the town to see distinctive building

FANS of an architect travelled around the world to pay homage to his work in Bognor Regis.

The 17 Australians made the journey of thousands of miles to see the creativity and design skills of John Hawes.

Mr Hawes created The White Tower in Aldwick Road in 1898 in the arts and crafts style, though with the appearance of art deco, as his first building.

His anonymity in Bognor Regis is in contrast to the fame given to his life and work in Western Australia where he settled as a priest from 1915-39.

Among those on Tuesday's visit of about two hours was Pat Mills, 82, of Geraldton.

She was baptised by Mr Hawes in her local church in the nearby town of Mullewa.

1956) was put on the four-storey house in advance of the permanent plaque as part of a new heritage trail.

The visit was arranged by local historian and Post columnist Sylvia Endacott.

She found out on the internet about the esteem in which Mr Hawes is held in Australia.

A heritage project has been based around him and a museum dedicated to him opened in Geraldton in 2016.

She was told about the 19-day pilgrimage around Mr Hawes' work in England and the Bahamas and arranged with the owners of The White Tower, who did not want to be publicly named, for the exclusive tour of a building designed by Mr Hawes as a summer house for himself and his two brothers.

She said: "I am honoured to do this.

War tribute installed A TRIBUTE to residents who fought and died in the First World War has been installed in Aldwick.

The Silent Soldier has taken pride of place next to the area's war memorial in the Millennium Gardens off Pryors Lane.

The decision to buy the striking metal silhouette was made by Aldwick Parish Council's members.

Their chairman, Cllr Lilian Richardson, said: "We always have a Remembrance Day service here in Aldwick and we count it as one of our most important days of the year, as do our parishioners who attend in force.

"However, this year is the 100th annniversary of the end of the First World War - a real milestone and we wanted to try to mark it in a special way.

"When we were invited by the West Sussex Royal British Legion to sponsor a Silent Soldier, we thought this would be a fitting way of showing our respect.

"Two of our councillors - Cllr John Bass and Cllr Terry Mullins - together with our clerk spearheaded

the proposal to go ahead.

"As a bonus, of course, sponsorship of the soldier also means the Legion can continue to care for and support veterans of all our conflicts since then."

The Silent Soldier cost £250 to buy and install. It will be kept in place until the end of this year.

As the property of the parish council, it can be used at any future Remembrance Day service.

The soldier measures 144cmx60cm, weighs 3km and is made of the aluminium composite sheet called dibond. He is supported by iron poles which weigh about 7kg.

Three of the silhouettes have been bought by Bognor Regis Town Council but Bersted parish councillors decided against the purchase because of a lack of suitable locations and fears of vandalism.

The centenary of the end of the First World War will be marked in exactly six months time.

This year sees Remembrance Day of November 11 co-incide with Remembrance Sunday, when most ceremonial tributes take place.

Another of the visitors, Geraldton resident Tony Cricth, 70, said: "The effort that has gone into this is fantastic. I hope it is the start of a stronger connection with Geraldton."

The White House has many of its original features thanks to being kept in the Hawes family until 2010. The current owners gave keepsakes about the building to the visitors.

` TAO bar's licence THE owner of a bar in the High Street in Bognor Regis received his fate this week.

On May, 2 a hearing was held with Daniel Slade from TAO Sladesbars Ltd and the Council have determined to modify the conditions of the licence in the following respects, namely: 1. A noise limiting device shall be fitted to the premises sound system to the satisfaction of the council’s environmental health officer and set at a level that is inaudible inside the nearest domestic residence in the High Street.

2.

An appropriate noise assessment report shall be undertaken by a recognised qualified acoustic consultant within 14 days on noise attenuation properties at the premises.

3. No more than ten customers shall be permitted to congregate outside the front of the premises after 11pm. Customers being permitted to congregate for the purposes of smoking only.

4. The kitchen shall be fitted with an appropriate odour extraction system within 28 days to facilitate the preparation of fried and grilled substantial food, not snacks.

On their Facebook page, TAO said: "After five very long days of anxiously waiting to see how the ADC want to move forward regarding TAO’s licence and hours, we are thrilled to announce that TAO is here to stay.

"The support has been absolutely monumental and we’d like to once again express our thanks to every single person, business and governing body that has had our back since our doors opened."

Consultation call for park A REQUEST to shelve spending on a proposed park for Bognor Regis has been rejected.

Cllr Matt Stanley called on the leader of Arun District Council to put the £300,000 due to be spent on the next stage of planning the Hothamton linear park on hold for further consultation to be held.

But Cllr Gillian Brown, who heads the Tory-run council, said the decision about the park had already been made.

The council was committed to going ahead with a planning application for the £3m scheme to transform the Hothamton car park off Queensway.

Cllr Stanley (LD, Marine) told last week's full meeting of the council he wanted more time to be taken before Arun committed itself to spending residents' money on the proposal.

Only 19 people had backed the idea during a consultation attended by 120 residents last October.

He said: "I respectfully ask the leader to delay spending £300,000 to progress the linear park project to the next stage before the following two points can be evidenced.

"Firstly, that the £3.5m due to be spent on the linear park will provide value for money for the taxpayers who will have to pay the bill. Secondly, that the linear park is widely supported by the majority of Bognor Regis residents."

He said a lot of concern existed about the proposals from residents who had spoken to him about them.

"Unfortunately, the council's officers are unable to attend a public meeting to answer questions about the consultation.

Sunken Gardens would be the perfect opportunity to launch just such an initiative.

"The police do often advise us that our presence in this garden, where we work as volunteers, makes a difference. But, of course, we can't be there all the time."

"A couple of log cabins occupied by very active community groups would make a much more significant impact than we are able to."

The group of community gardeners has been working for nearly seven years. They work with Arun's parks officers on the planting and maintenance of the sunken gardens and other town centre green spaces.

But statistics from Arun showed a lack of action up to last October in tackling antisocial behaviour, littering and dog fouling, she added.

"We have had consultation on whether the local plan takes place. That is done.

"Any resident, and all the residents of the area, will be able to comment on the planning application.

"What's the point in holding a public meeting when the decision has already been made?

"We asked residents what they would like to see these two sites (Regis Centre and Hothamton) used for. It was very clear this was wanted by residents both inside and outside Bognor Regis."

For Hothamton, the idea is to create a park that has a variety of uses for children and adults with a new play area, adult gym, cafes and a potential petanque pitch.

There could also be water features, cycle routes and public seating. Two blocks of flats are also planned.

"These proposals are unashamedly ambitious and will be transformational for Bognor Regis but this is what is needed to change the perception of the town," she said.

"We have public support for this.

Timing is everything and the community is tired of waiting for things to happen," added Cllr Mrs Brown.

For the Regis Centre site, the council wants to create a winter garden around a bigger Alexandra Theatre. But this scheme is not so far advanced.

Bid to delay regeneration plan criticised by senior councillor LEADING councillor Phil Hitchins has attacked the intended delaying tactics for the regeneration of Bognor Regis.

Cllr Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) is the Conservative chairman of Arun District Council's regeneration subcommittee for the town and said the Liberal Democrats should listen to residents' demands for the town to be improved.

Speaking outside last week's full council meeting, he said: "Don't the Lib Dems get it?

"We have no intention of putting off regeneration for three, four or five years. People are fed up with the start,

Entries are open for the annual event to highlight the best blooms in the area.

Philippa Seager, who runs the competition for Bersted Parish Council, said: "This year, we would like to see more entries that make the most of recycling and encourage wildlife, so this will be included in both categories."

Entries are invited for containers/ hanging baskets and front gardens.

They must be visible to the passing public. The final entry date is June 22. Judging will take place on July 4.

Residents' cash helps pre-school GENEROUS Bognor Regis residents have helped to ensure a good start in life for young children in Sri Lanka.

Bognor Hotham Rotary Club has donated enough money, thanks to the donations of individuals from the town among others, to ensure a pre-school on the island can continue.

The club has given £1,500 to employ two teachers for a year at the Gulugahakanda Kekulu Pre-School on Sri Lanka.

It has also provided most of the £700 needed to feed its 25 children. Help with school uniforms and other resources is also provided when parents are unable to afford them.

The Rotarians were told about the preschool by Chichester charity Extra Cover.

This is devoted to improving education on Sri Lanka.

It came across the pre-school and contacted the Rotary club to find out if its

members could help.

Club press officer Brian Clarke said: "Up to that point, the pre-school had been helped by an Australian sponsor but, for personal reasons, financial support had now stopped.

"The teachers had tried to collect money from the parents but it was nowhere near enough as many of the children came from very poor families."

The partnership in Sri Lanka between Extra Cover and the Rotary club dates back nearly three years.

They sponsored a three-wheel tuk tuk to help to transport disabled children and young adults to school and to a vocational training school in Panangala.

None of them had the chance to be educated because their homes were isolated. There are two tuk tuks, with 15 children at the school and 25 young adults on various days at the training centre.

All aboard for pension fight PENSION campaigners from Bognor Regis and Chichester staged a special bus ride to the government to accuse it of creating a one-way ticket to poverty.

The 49 passengers on board the 1950s Routemaster double-decker handed in a giant bus ticket to the Department for Work and Pensions to protest at making women wait longer for the state pension.

The stunt on Tuesday was the idea of Bognor, Chichester and South Coast Waspi member Angie Taylor.

Angie, who lives in Bognor Regis, said: "We wanted to put our heads above the parapet to show the government that we are still here and are not going away.

"It's all about continuing to be a

nuisance. We don't want the government to think we are tired of the situation."

Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) was formed in protest at the rapid increases in the state pension age for women to 66.

The bus tour also took in the Houses of Parliament and Downing Street before it ended with the protest at the DWP. The mock ticket was handed to a civil servant for Guy Opperman, undersecretary of state for work and pensions.

The two-and-a-half hour tour also involved the Back to 60 and 63 Is The New 60 protest groups. Bognor Regisbased Radio Respect broadcast the tour live on the internet.

Unique dementia centre given the royal seal of approval at opening

HRH Countess of Wessex officially opened charity, Dementia Support's Sage House in Tangmere.

by Susan Pyper, Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, and greeted on arrival by several guests including Chichester MP Gillian Keegan, Mrs Caroline Nicholls, High Sheriff of West Sussex, Cllr Elizabeth Hamilton, chairman of Chichester District Council, and Mr Anthony Wickens, Dementia Support chairman and founder.

Her Royal highness was accompanied

by Dementia Support chief executive Sally Tabbner and Mr Wickens to see the various dementia support services and to meet customers, carers, volunteers, members of staff and trustees.

The visit started in the Memory Assessment and Information Zone where the Countess of Wessex was talked through the memory assessment process with a psychiatrist and retired GP. Her Royal Highness was then shown the Care and Activities Zone where the charity runs its dementia wellbeing activities and day care services.

After lunch, the Countess concluded

her visit by unveiling a plaque to officially open Sage House and give a speech.

Her Royal Highness said: "Thank you very much for inviting me to do this. I am really pleased to be here and to see the work that you have put into it.

"Clearly it is going to serve your community, so very well. And, as you say, hopefully provide the framework and models for elsewhere in the country.

"On behalf of the individuals and the families that you are here to serve, thank you and all your colleagues and associates for what you have done.

"You will be serving well in the future and I wish you every success."

The Countess was presented with a posy by Edward Page, aged nine, and his six-year-old sister, Bella Page. The siblings both chose the name 'Daisy's Cafe' for Sage House's community cafe, in honour of their great-grandmother, Daisy, who had dementia.

A specially made Dementia Support bracelet was given to Her Royal Highness by Iris Randell, aged ten, who chose the name 'Forget-Me-Not Lane' for a corridor to the therapy rooms.

Mrs Keegan said: "Once again, Chichester is the leader in this kind of service and it makes you very proud to be part of the community.

"I can only imagine how much help this is going to be for any family that have anybody who is touched by dementia which, let's face it, most of us will be at

some point.

"I'm also looking forward, very much, to the education in the community to try and make Chichester more of a dementia-friendly city. That is something to aspire to.

"Somewhere where all of us understand how to help people with dementia for longer in the community, I would be very supportive of that."

Maria Mant from Eastergate, takes her husband, Roger, pictured right, to the support hub after he was diagnosed in 2016 with the illness.

Roger gave the thumbs up when asked how he felt to meet Her Royal Highness.

The couple have used the day activities since the hub opened. Mrs Mant said: "At the moment, we use the day activities.

We might look in to day care, maybe I can go off out. But at the moment it's the activities which we come to and do together."

The couple previously lived in Fontwell, where Roger was head groundsman at the racecourse. He said: "Oh, I do like coming here. It's good here."

Sally Tabbner said she was privileged to have The Countess of Wessex opening the hub.

She said: "For someone of this stature to take an interest and come to a local charity is lovely, we are really honoured to have her here.

"It is more than we could ever have hoped for."

` Land swop deal A POTENTIAL school site is about to be swopped between Yapton and Felpham.

Both parish councils are happy for the land in the new Blake's Mead development to be included within Felpham's boundary.

It has been earmarked for a school to serve the hundreds of houses which have been built in the area and which are located in Felpham.

Initial approval for the change was given by Arun District Council's electoral review sub-committee last week. It needs to be finally agreed by the full council this year.

Yapton Parish Council chairman Cllr Stephen Haymes, who is a sub-committee member, said: "The parish council is fully supportive of this. It's only a little piece of land.

"The boundary didn't make much difference because it was just a field. But it makes a lot of sense now to be moved to Felpham."

Church's gift day to residents THOUSANDS of free cakes were eaten

by Bognor Regis residents thanks to members of a town church.

Hard-working cooks in Grace Church baked the 3,000 sweet treats for its latest community day.

The cakes were among the offering to the public organised by worshippers.

Some 2,000 people were thought to have gone along to have a great time at the Hampshire Avenue playing field.

They could tuck into free hamburgers, hot dogs and ice creams as well as the cakes. All the attractions could also be enjoyed without paying out a penny.

One of the church's pastors, Thomas Bishop, said: "As a church, we just wanted to do a fun event to be enjoyed by the community to bring everyone together.

"In this day and age, opportunities for people to meet each other are getting fewer. They are less pubs around now.

"Social media has replaced them to

some extent but it's not the same.

"We also wanted to show people that God loves them. We feel we are called to go out into the community.

"We can meet on Sundays but people may not know we are there. A day like this provides them with the chance to get to know us and it's also a lot of fun."

The popularity of last Saturday's event saw nearly all of the 500 hot dogs and 900 hamburgers devoured just over halfway though its four hours.

It was the second day of its kind held in the town by church members. The first was in 2016. Others have been held in its other meeting places of Chichester, Havant and Midhurst.

Plenty of attractions were available to entertain visitors away from the free food. Some 20 stalls included a hook a duck contest, an inflatable assault course, an under-fives marquee, a small display of owls and face painting.

FOUR cycles were stolen from around Bognor Regis in a week.

The first bike to be taken was a Ventura mountain bike from a shed in Ockley Court on April 19.

It was red/black in colour and had a black saddle. A blue cycle lock was on its handle bars.

April 21 saw two cycles stolen from a shed in Elm Grove and, overnight on April 25, a bike was stolen from a shed in Hatherleigh Gardens.

Coloured black, with lime green features, it was a Carrera Vulcan with bike register stickers attached.

Members of the Nitecki Southern Taekwon-Do School also delighted crowds with their martial arts prowess.

Aged from five upwards, they showed off their skills breaking roof tiles, baton blocks and blocks of wood.

Leader Daniel Nitecki said: "About 60 members are here taking part. We are doing some self-defences moves and stuff like that.

"They can show how much skill they have. They get nervous at the start but then they enjoy it."

` Conmen warning A £250 theft in Pagham has led police to issue a fresh warning about bogus callers.

An elderly resident of Mill Park Road answered her front door at 2pm on April 25 to callers who told her they were from the 'water board'. They entered the property and walked out with the money.

It was one of three such incidents on the same day. The others took place just before 3pm in Arundel and about 8pm in Cowfold.

Some £350 was stolen in the afternoon distraction burglary but the woman resident at the last of the properties targeted shut the door on the two men.

Tom Carpenter, of Sussex Police's West Sussex community investigation team, said: "In each case, two men called at the victims' homes, saying they were dealing with a water leak at a neighbouring property.

"In two of the cases, they were able to go in and, while the victims were distracted in the kitchen, cash was stolen from their homes.

"These types of incidents are thankfully rare but are nevertheless an unpleasant and often traumatic experience."

Previous advice about distraction crimes was worth repeating, he said. This included checking the ID of callers by calling the company they say they represent, phoning a neighbour or friend to ask them to check out the caller on the doorstep and ignoring claims to represent the obsolete 'water board'.

Large amounts of cash should also be kept in banks, and not domestic properties, where it was safe.

Special treats on special day for families COELIAC families from across southern England flocked to Bognor Regis for a celebration.

A total of 150 adults and children joined in the special occasion to mark the 50th anniversary of Coeliac UK. They were able to enjoy a delicious range of gluten-free food and chatting to each other.

The day was organised by the charity's West Sussex Coeliac Group. Its organiser, Anna Henderson, said the event at Butlin's had been a big success.

"One little eight-year-old boy summed up everything with his happy beaming smile when he told me: 'Today I felt normal. I could eat everything just like all my friends do. This has been the happiest day of my life'.

"The word safe kept popping up as the anxiety that coeliacs have about what they eat - and the consequence of eating something that isn't coeliac-free - can be a constant burden for the whole family.

"One family told them they all felt safe today and another said they could all relax and have fun like any other family."

There are 150,000 diagnosed coeliacs in the UK, but many more are believed to be undiagnosed.

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition caused by a

reaction to the gluten in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten is in most food staples like bread, pasta and cereals.

Coeliacs must maintain a strict glutenfree diet for life if they are to avoid serious complications like osteoporosis, infertility and bowel cancer.

Money raised at the golden anniversary celebration day went to Coeliac UK's research fund to find a better and permanent solution for coeliac disease and related autoimmune conditions.

The day at Butlin's was so popular some 400 applications for tickets were received. The 69 children and 81 adults who were able to join in enjoyed the site's attractions during the day with the centrepiece of a superb three-course gluten-free lunch and sumptuous gluten-free cupcakes.

All the party-goers went away with balloons and bags overflowing with free gluten-free samples.

"Our local group exists to support and encourage those of all ages who need to avoid gluten, particularly after diagnosis, which can be a difficult time," said Anna.

"It is easy to become isolated. We provide opportunities for coeliacs to connect and meet with fellow sufferers, an option not available with all the purely online social media support groups."

Town unites for sight A SUN-DRENCHED day delighted organisers of a charity event in Bognor Regis.

Students behind Unite4Sight saw the community combine to create a day with a difference in Hotham Park.

They hope to have raised some £1,500 for the town-based 4Sight Vision Support charity when final takings are received from the range of fundraising activities such as tin can alley, coconut shy, silent auction, raffle and tombola.

Events management degree students at the University of Chichester are in the final week of their three-year course and arranged a six-hour spectacular of sound and colour to count towards their final grades.

At least 3,000 people were thought to have gone along to join in the fun.

Among them was Colin McHale, 25, of Haslemere, and his family.

"We came here for the day out and came across this event," he said. "It's good. It's a family event, it's got live music and it's free.

"There's lots of stalls and food and drink available as well.

"I think the students have done very well and I expect we'll be here for a couple of hours."

The six organisers spent seven months making arrangements for the bandstand performances and the some 20 stalls to take place.

Joint organiser Jodie Brazil said: "Putting this event on has been a real rollercoaster. It's had its ups and it's certainly had its downs.

"But, overall, it's been the most amazing experience, especially as it's for charity. I would say I've learned more from this than anything else while I've been at university."

One of her fellow organisers, Lois Pretty, said seeing all the preparations come to life had made the hard work worthwhile.

"We called today Unite4Sight because we wanted to bring everyone together to help people with sight problems.

"Teamwork is also vital. Without that, none of this would have happened.

Each hour of the day featured a different genre of music, pictured left below, from bands like The Beaten Tracks, Luna Blue, The Dolomites and Ben Harvey.

Suzanne Hill School of Dance also staged a performance and the Batala Samba Band made for a noisy opening.

A colour dance in which those taking part were drenched in a rainbow of brightness proved popular. Disney zumba and Disney music also got many visitors moving.

4Sight outreach worker and technology manager Dan Batchelor said: "This event is fantastic for us. It's all about raising awareness and it's helping us to do that.

"Being here is a good way for people to know about our services. It's always good for us to be out in the community.

"Not many people know about sight loss. Unless a person has sight loss, or knows someone who is living with it, people avoid the subject at all costs because they don't like to think about it."

The charity is based in Victoria Drive and has services across West Sussex.

It is also set to join with Specsavers in Bognor Regis on July 7 to promote the link between the diagnosis of an eye condition and the help available.

"We know that link is lacking, not just locally but nationally, and we want people to know how they can be helped," he added.

Religious parade is a first DOZENS of Filipinos took one of their traditions on to the streets of Bognor Regis for the first time.

Some 60 Catholic members of the community from the south-east Asian nation joined in the Santacruzan procession. It was believed to be the first on the south coast.

Procession members walked from the High Street entrance of Hotham Park to Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Clarence Road.

One of the organisers, Bernard Bautista, said: "We tried this last year but the weather was bad and we only paraded around the outside of the

church. This year, we wanted to hold the procession outside. We spoke to all the authorities and they said it was OK to go ahead."

The parade was followed by a mass at the church.

Residents of the Philippines have come to the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas to work for several years. But their community was only officially created after their country was hit by typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

Their then parish priest, Father Tony Churchill, suggested a mass for the victims.

promote their national culture with a monthly Filipino-British mass on the first Saturday monthly. They also hold Christmas and summer parties.

The parade depicts the finding of the cross of Jesus by Queen Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great the powerful emperer who ended the persecution of Christians.

Mary Bautista, one of those taking part, said: "It's a tradition of religious devotion to the Virgin Mary. We will be praying the holy rosary while doing the parade."

Three of the adults in the parade each held a cross, a rosary and a Bible. Eight children were angels. They carried a letter each to spell 'Ave Maria'.

Signs celebrating three queens were also carried by some of the participants.

Shane Bautista, nine, was an angel in the parade for the second year.

"It was fun taking part in the parade last year. I liked it. It's more special than a normal mass," she said.

` RAF centenary talk SENIOR RAF personnel will be given a talk about its work to the next meeting of Arun and Chichester aviation fans.

The blend of personal narratives from the RAF Presentation Team members, from their operational experience, will be mixed with highly engaging and dramatic footage.

They will depict how the RAF contributes to the delivery of British air and space power in the service's centenary year.

It will be a different presentation to the one they made to the group in 2016.

The event will take place at the May 21 meeting of the Arun and Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society, or Air Aces, at the Chichester Park Hotel.

There will be a short Air ACES annual meeting after the coffee break.

Entrance for society members is ÂŁ3, guests ÂŁ5 and under-16s free. Tickets are on sale on the night. Doors will open at 6.45pm and the presentation will begin at 7.30pm.

Happy ending as filmmakers win new award f Superheroes Josh Morgan and Tommy Morgan

Superhero start for scary week A SELECTION of superheroes gathered as the Bognor Regis town mayor launched his scary week.

The likes of Superman and Captain America walked with Cllr Phil Woodall along the town's seafront before he completed the first of his challenges for charity. He climbed the inflatable slide on the foreshore before he completed a few circuits of the ride-on children's cars.

He said: "I've got an extra week as mayor this year because of the late bank holiday. I wanted to do a few challenges to raise money for my chosen charities - Alzheimer's Society and Epilepsy Action.

"I don't like heights and I don't like going on water."

FILM-MAKERS in Chichester have completed a hat-trick of wins in an annual competition.

Members of Chichester Film and Video Makers clinched this year's Albany Competition for the third year in a row.

A club spokesman said: "The Albany Competition is an annual competition between amateur film-making clubs from Sussex and the immediate borders of Surrey and Hampshire.

"Each year, clubs make films of less than 15 minutes duration which must be based on a theme.

"This year, the theme was Elephant in the Room and the winning film by the club was Cardinal Sin. "This film can now be seen on the club's website - cfvm.org.uk. Also, have a look at our Facebook page to see some recent films that we have made."

Clive Hand, the film's director, is pictured below right, receiving the award from the president of the club, Stan Harvey-Merritt.

The club's continued success in the competition means it will again host the next year's version. The theme in 2019 will be Too Close To Call.

Chichester Film and Video Makers meets every other Wednesday, from September to May, in St Pancras Church Hall, St Pancras, in Chichester. Entry and a cup of tea are free.

Its most recent meeting was on Wednesday. Films made by Solent Movie Makers were shown.

"Anyone interested in amateur films and film-making is welcome to attend (our meetings) and experience at first hand the skill, imagination and expertise shown in the making of these films," the spokesman added. Entry and a cup of tea are free.

Among the 12 superheroes to join Cllr Woodall on Monday were Bognor Regis brothers Josh Morgan, nine, and Tommy Morgan, six.

Josh went along as Captain America.

He said: "He is so cool. He is super strong and can do a lot of things.

"I've seen some of his films and I read the comics which have him in."

Tommy was Spiderman. He said: I like the fact he can climb the walls and shoot web from his hands."

Cllr Woodall's other challenges this week have included the hydraulic platform at Worthing Fire Station, visiting the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and tackling a climbing wall. This weekend will see him waterborne twice.

ROYAL weddings come but once in a while, so with the talk majestic, Majestic topically had to be my oenological destination this week.

I elected to sample four white wines and three red ones and commenced with the albeit somewhat beastly sum of £6.66 as an outlay for a 2017 Grande Réserve Domaine Saint Jean De La Cavalerie Chardonnay and, as the name implies, from an estate previously renowned for horse breeding in the Pays D'Oc region of France.

Floral hints embellish this cheeky decidedly peachy number with dry wood flavours and presenting essentially as a pleasingly creamy Chardonnay one to pair with regal fish or coronation chicken and one well worth a punt! For a slight increase in price at £6.99, the 2016 Jean Sablenay Muscadet was crisp, had a slight spritz and lemon and lime flavours to the fore with notes of grass, green apples and a touch of citrus on the finish.

Light and refreshing, this wine is

a pleasant apéritif and, given its low alcohol level (just 11.5 per cent) , is ideal for a lunch-time tipple. Next, a 2017 Villemarin Picpoul De Pinet caught my eye, being on offer at £7.99, and whose terroir, maritime climate and late ripening grapes make it a wine of note.

This particular example has baked apple notes on the nose, is floral, dry, fresh and lip smacking along with zippy

fruit - extremely quaffable, à mon avis!

My final white selection was that of a 2016 Bourgogne Les Chenaudières Chardonnay from the reputed Cave De Lugny on offer for £ 9.99 This reasonably-priced Burgundy proved to be aromatic with predominantly stone fruits and citrus on the palate and would please traditionalists.

Method 1. Blitz your fresh mint leaves in a blender, or mash using a muddler, then put them into a tall glass.

2. Slice the cucumber into thin slices and place in the bottom of the glass.

3. Pour the lime juice, elderflower cordial and apple juice into your glass.

4. Place your ice into a sealable freezer bag and use a rolling pin to crush into small chunks.

5. Remove the ice from the freezer bag and place into the glass, then stir.

6. Add the soda water to the glass.

7. To garnish, place the mint sprig on top of the drink, near the edge.

8. As a finishing touch, place one lime wedge into the drink and the other on the rim of the glass.

Rhubarb and ginger twice-baked soufflés

Method 1. Put the compote ingredients in a pan, bring to a simmer, then cook gently for 10 minutes until the rhubarb is tender but still holds its shape (see Make Ahead). Strain, reserving the cooking liquid, then set aside.

2. For the soufflés, heat the oven to 180°C/ 160°C fan/gas 4. In a medium pan, melt the butter over a low-medium heat. Mix in the flour and ground ginger to make a thick paste and cook for a minute or so until it smells biscuitty. Add the milk bit by bit, whisking until a thick white sauce forms.

3. Add 2 tbsp of the rhubarb cooking liquid and 50g of the caster sugar to the white sauce, then whisk in the egg yolks and set aside in a large clean mixing bowl. In another clean mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites with an electric hand mixer to form stiff peaks (they will hold their shape when the beaters are removed). Whisk in the

remaining 50g caster sugar for a minute to form a stiff, glossy meringue.

4. Gently but briskly, use a large metal spoon to fold the meringue into the white sauce, then spoon the mixture evenly among the prepared moulds.

Bake for 25-28 minutes. The soufflés should be risen, slightly golden and wobble a little when you take them out of the oven.

5. Mix 100ml of the remaining rhubarb cooking liquid with the double cream (keep the rest to use in cocktails, if you like).

6. When the soufflés are cooked, carefully turn them out and put one in the centre of each baking dish. Pour the rhubarb-flavoured cream over each soufflé, sprinkle with brown sugar and spoon the strained rhubarb compote around the soufflés. Bake for 20 minutes until golden and bubbling. The sauce will be runny straight out of the oven but will thicken slightly as it cools.

Water and fibre can get to the bottom of a problem IT’S A subject that people don’t really want to discuss, but it is a fact of life that a high percentage of the population have suffered from, or have haemorrhoids, otherwise known as piles.

Hemorrhoids are swollen and irritated veins around the anus or in the lower rectum of the body, which is the last segment of the large intestine leading to the anus. Its important to consider a few things when using the bathroom that may help control or avoid haemorrhoids completely.

The number one tip is NOT to force a bowel movement. Straining and pushing may make hemorrhoids worse. If a bowel movement has not occurred after 2/3 minutes, it is best to get up and try again later. It also helps some people to have a similar schedule every day, such as sitting on the toilet for a few minutes after each meal.

Number two tip…(no pun intended!) listen to the body in these cases. The moment the body needs a bowel movement is the best time to do it. Waiting for a less social setting or waiting to use the toilet at home can actually back up the stool and cause more stress and straining. This will only make the haemorrhoids worse.

Softness goes a long way with haemorrhoids. If toilet paper is too irritating, using damp toilet paper may help. Alcohol-free baby wipes with absolutely no additives may also provide relief when wiping.

Making certain lifestyle choices can help massively by either reducing the risk of developing haemorrhoids or limit the time that a person has them. These include: 1. Drinking plenty of liquids According to research, most anal problems such as haemorrhoids are caused by a lack of liquids in the diet. Drinking plenty of liquid throughout the day keeps the stool soft and manageable as it

works its way through the intestines. The result is a much softer stool that takes less energy to pass and causes less irritation to the haemorrhoids.

2. Fibre-rich diet Diets high in fibre are very important to digestive health, especially when it comes to bowel movements. Fibre can absorb water, which helps to both soften the stool and give it more body.

This makes it easier to pass, so plenty of fruits and vegetables daily are essential.

Natural remedies that may help…

Coconut oil can be very useful! If you keep a small jar of coconut oil in your bathroom, reserved just for this purpose, you can easily apply some coconut oil externally on the haemorrhoids after each bowel movement. Use a fresh tissue to scoop out and apply a bit of coconut oil. This method is immediately soothing. Coconut oil has painrelieving properties and is also anti-bacterial, which may be helpful and it is also an antiinflammatory.

It can be taken internally instead or in addition to topical use. Coconut oil works as an antiinflammatory when taken internally too and provides nutrients. For some, it provides a gentle laxative effect. Because constipation is a cause of haemorrhoids, using coconut oil to relieve constipation will relieve its condition. The maximum dose of coconut oil that is suggested per day is three tablespoons, taken throughout the day.

But start with just a teaspoon a few times a day and make sure it suits you and slowly move up to the maximum dose.

Aloe Vera can be applied on hemorrhoids as it gives an almost instant relief since it will help to calm and soothe tissues that are inflamed. So it can be said that gel from this plant can be an effective

remedy against symptoms like irritation, burning sensation, itching and pain.

Community News & Views A DECADE of community activity is being marked at a North Bersted building this year.

It is hoped the anniversary at Bersted Green Learning Centre, pictured below, will encourage more groups to use the venue.

The learning centre at the back of the car park for the Bersted Green Court housing complex, in Hazel Road, is a joint initiative between Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester and Arun District Council to deliver training and learning at a low cost.

It currently houses Yet2Learn, which is a community interest company that aims to provide an environment where suitably skilled young adults from college, university or elsewhere can practise their IT abilities by working on projects that benefit the community and local businesses.

Jenny Holmes, Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester's senior admins and community officer, said this still left plenty of room for a host of community groups to use the centre.

"There is currently some availability for bookings and, as the centre comes up to its 10th birthday, VAAC would love to see it being fully used for the benefit of the local community.

"Groups that currently, or have previously, used the centre include dance groups, theatre groups, flower arranging, fitness classes, tea and chat and art groups. It has also been used to provide training on subjects such as health and safety, data protection, first aid, IT and social media.

"In addition to the office that Yet2Learn use, the learning centre has a large main hall, a small interview/counselling room, a fully equipped computer suite and a kitchen," she said. "The facilities are available to hire at very competitive rates to any charities, organisations and businesses that want to provide community learning and training opportunities in the widest sense."

DOUBLE yellow lines are planned for Pagham to cut the speed of motorists.

The parking bans are proposed for two sites in Pagham Road to help to solve a safety problem believed to have been caused by an existing set of double yellow lines.

West Sussex County Council has been consulting about the latest permanent traffic regulation order along the road.

It wants to install the double yellow lines on the eastern side of Pagham Road at its junction with Hook Lane and on the road's western side at the junction of the access road to the new housing being built behind 252 Pagham Road.

It will also enable the length of the current double yellow lines on the road's eastern side to be reduced.

Tony Kershaw, the county council's director of law and assurance, says in a statement: "In 2014, new double yellow lines were introduced near the shops in Pagham Road.

"Unfortunately, these lines caused vehicles to park further north, near the junction with Hook Lane, where they cause obstruction and visibility problems.

"Concerns have also been raised that the removal of parked vehicles near the shops has increased traffic speeds.

"It is, therefore, proposed to install double yellow lines to prevent parking too close to Hook Lane and to remove a length of the current lines opposite Millfarm Drive.

"This shortening of the lines will improve access to the local shops and may also help to reduce traffic speed."

The western set of the lines is proposed to protect the access at the junction of the new housing development. * The county council is also seeking to move the pedestrian crossing on the B2259 Felpham Way in Felpham.

This is to enable a mini-roundabout to be installed at its junction with Summerley Lane to improve road safety. The crossing needs to be moved eastwards to keep a safe distance with the roundabout.

TWO CHICHESTER College students are celebrating after reaching the shortlist of a national award scheme.

Millie Harrington, pictured above left, and Grace Knight, above right, were nominated for the front of house and management categories respectively in the Institute of Hospitality Student Awards.

Making Theatre Gaining Skills is a community interest company (CIC) based in Westloats Lane. HealthWish is a CIC seeking to remove health inequalities in East and West Sussex and the Brighton area.

AN EXTRA two roving gangs of pothole repair workers have started work across West Sussex this week.

West Sussex County Council has taken on the teams to get more damaged road surfaces repaired.

The county had already increased the number of gangs, pictured below, from 12 to 15 to tackle the problem caused by this year's frequent changes in temperature. This has enabled some 250 potholes a day to be repaired.

A team dedicated to patching larger areas of road surface will also begin soon.

The extra resources are being funded from the ÂŁ1,594,870 the county council received from the Department for Transport's pothole action fund this year.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, county council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: "We would like to re-assure residents that we take the issue of potholes very seriously - hence the extra resources. West Sussex highways, and particularly our contractor, Balfour Beatty Living Places, are working hard to tackle the issue.

"In 2017, we repaired approximately 14,500 potholes. In the first four months of this year, which have included periods of severe weather, we have already repaired more than 8,500.

"We have already started to deliver this year's resurfacing programme which will see three-and-a-half miles of principal roads and almost six miles of local roads have their old and worn surfaces replaced.

"In addition, we are extending the life of 12-and-a-half miles of the principal roads and around 26 miles of local roads with a programme of surface dressing.

"Surface dressing involves treating roads which are in relatively good condition with preventative maintenance treatments to maintain their good condition."

Cllr Lanzer said good reasons could exist why the pothole repair teams were unable to repair another pothole nearby - a situation some residents had questioned.

"They may have no spare materials on the van, having been tasked to fill other potholes, or it could be that the other road needs traffic management, such as traffic lights, so they can do the repair safely and this takes time to arrange," he said.

The early months of this year have seen weather conditions change frequent between cold and mild and wet to increase the number of potholes.

GRANTS up to ÂŁ1,000 are available for groups around Bognor Regis that promote or support individuals' wellbeing or health.

The Arun Wellbeing and Health Partnership small grants scheme is open for new applications.

All voluntary, community and charity groups have to do to be in with a chance of receiving the money is to complete an easy one-stage application process. The next deadline for submissions is June 25. Applications will be considered by the appraisal panel during the second half of July.

Cllr Mike Clayden is Arun District Council's cabinet member for community wellbeing, which covers the health and wellbeing service. He said: "These grants help to support the valuable work that community groups provide for our residents.

"Promoting more active lifestyles and helping individuals to improve their social networks are key objectives to improving wellbeing and health in the district."

To be eligible for funding, groups and organisations must show that their activities support at least one of the partnership's priorities - to promote physical activity and prevent social isolation.

Uncle George was among town's entertainers Donkey rides were another popular way to enjoy the seafront TODAY, Bognor Regis has a number of regular summer seaside events, which are widely advertised to encourage visitors to the resort.

This was not always the case, however. From the 1870s for many years, the entertainment provided was very homegrown, and, in fact, the whole town ‘would close down’ so everyone could enjoy all the activities, which would include rowing competitions, greasy pole and tug of war events.

A performer called Uncle George entertained the crowds from 1897 to 1928 near to the west end of Marine Gardens. His real name was Augustus Sears and his own open-air seaside entertainment was always very popular.

Uncle George came to Bognor after a successful seven-year career in Margate. He brought with him a troupe of artistes known as ‘The Thespians’ who could be found entertaining the crowds near Park Road, in their distinctive uniforms of green blazers and straw boaters.

If you have ever been to a theatre to see the show Cavalcade, written by Noel Coward, it contains a seaside revue, which it is claimed was actually based on Uncle George and his seaside entertainers.

Seaside entertainment consisted of many different styles, including the Dazzle concerts that would regularly visit the concert party

premises at the Olympian Gardens, which was situated at the seaward end of Lennox Street.

Some of the shows here included the Pierrots, and one of the very popular visiting groups was Walter Howard’s Gay Cadets. How time and words change!

Eventually, this venue was closed in 1930 and the site was occupied by the new company – Butlin’s Recreation Shelter. Following the success of the various shows, they eventually moved to the newly popular Esplanade Theatre, which opened in 1939, where many famous stars started to tread the boards before gaining stardom.

The Alexandra Theatre fills this role today, but many entertainers now have their apprenticeship at holiday camps or on cruise ships before ‘hitting the big time.’ Unless, of course, they become instant stars because of television!

There were goat carts available - which I must confess was a different idea to me; this allowed a family group to enjoy the experience. Another family - the Neales - also operated donkeys as well as the goat carts, and they housed their animals in Market Street and also in Ockley Road. The Neales' donkeys had a stand at the end of York Road.

They were always very popular and many children had their picture taken on a donkey,

or goat cart, while other people would have sent home the postcard view of Bognor Regis with the donkeys to tell their families how much they were enjoying their holiday. At some of the Sands of Time events around 2003 we saw the donkeys return to the seafront.

The beach itself has always provided an area for entertainment. In the past, Frank Bale, better known as the Bognor Clown, would operate a marionette stand with his wife in the 1920s on the beach in front of the Royal Hotel.

He was born in London and went to America, but eventually he returned to Britain and settled with his family in Ockley Road.

This, of course, was a long time before the very popular Clowns' Convention in the 1980s and 1990s. The family eventually moved to The Steyne where Mrs Bale ran a boarding house.

This area seemed to be very popular as Samuel Mather, the Sand Scratcher, would daily entertain the crowds looking over the railings, in front of the Landsdowne, as they watched him carve intricate pictures in the sand, to the delight of all. People would then throw coins. Samuel was born in 1873 and lived in Gravits Lane, was a milkman who also sold cockles for a living and worked as a porter for a local furniture company.

While Bale and Mather entertained the crowds, the public would throw coins on to the beach to show their appreciation. Over the years, I have met a number of people who recall that, when they were children, they would take great delight in going down to the beach early in the morning searching through the newly washed sand to see if any coins had been missed at the previous day’s coin collections.

For a small seaside resort, we have had a wide range of model and miniature trains operating. One of the earliest operated on the area now occupied by the Alexandra Theatre and Regis public house.

There was also another site where children could enjoy a train ride - that of the area of ground around Longbrook, part of which eventually became used for the building of the Butlin’s Holiday Centre in 1960.

During the 1950s, when everyone was recovering from the traumas of war, a visit to the seaside was extremely popular and it was not unusual for groups to arrive in the town for a day trip.

However, these groups often consisted of more than 600 people arriving by train from a housing association, club, churches, London groups or tenants' associations. Their entertainment was principally to just sit on the beach in deck chairs, and let the children run down to the sea. They relaxed in deck chairs while various entertainments were brought to them.

Advertising in one local guide for 1954 proclaimed that ‘beach games’ would be held subject to the weather and tide during the summer holidays and this would include organised sport, physical training and other games. Can you imagine the attraction of physical training on the beach? This was in addition to the sand competitions and miniature railway that operated on the ‘east coach car park’ today’s Butlin’s site.

In addition to the events and activities mentioned here there was also the Pier, the Kursaal and, of course, for many years, the ever popular bathing machines.

Marathon effort by Tone Zone team PostSport as 52 26-milers clocked up in April BOGNOR Tone Zone runners literally went the extra mile this April, clocking up 52 marathons by 47 of their members.

By far the most popular event was the 26 mile race in where 31 runners from the Bognor Regis-based club took part.

Running her first marathon was Kari Mack, who blasted to a new club female record time of 3 hours 20 minutes.

Afterwards, she said: "What an amazing day.

I have the biggest grin, sorest legs and weird blisters under my toe nails and wearing them all with pride! What an achievement by all the runners and the support was awesome!"

Also making their marathon debuts were Michael Manwill, Nathan Bilham, Stan Mack, Adam Norgett, Karen Vilday and Alison Stead.

Ian Bayley, Andy Miles, Christine Rounds and Gary Smith all ran personal bests. This was especially pleasing for Bayley who put a few ghosts to rest after two or three marathons where he struggled to get the time he wanted.

Elsewhere, Duncan Stephenson-Gill flew to America to run in the Boston marathon, battling with freezing temperatures and driving rain to run a fantastic time of 3:28.

Also flying the flag abroad was Chris Gallagher

how took part in the Madrid Marathon, he posted a time of 3:39 having to cope with the opposite weather from Boston.

A further 11 runners pounded the streets for the London Marathon.

Duncan Stephenson-Gill took his place on the start line after only having six days to recover from Boston and still ran a very creditable 3:47.

Debbie Patching was running her first marathon since fracturing her hip two years ago. It wasn't easy but she battled on to record a personal best time of 5:23. Carole Mulry was also a first time marathoner and finished in 6:18. Paul Coe and Stuart Thomson had both run at Brighton but they were also in London.

They both enjoyed the race with Thomson running five minutes slower with 5:19 but Coe excelled in London running 14 minutes faster with a 4:12 The April endurance prize goes to Jude Bazeley who competed at Brighton (5:34), then the off-road Bad Cow Frolic marathon near Corfe Castle, Dorset.

On the very next day Bazeley set off again on the same course for an outstanding double clocking just six minutes slower than on day one with a 6:34 and 6:40.

DARTS: The Legends' Nathan Warren got off to a flying start in the Bognor Summer Darts league, throwing just 29 darts in side's 11-4 win over Newtown Amity. Here are the results in full:

NEWLY-PROMOTED Chichester will be looking to upset the odds when they continue their Division One National Young Athletes campaign at Horsham next week.

The squad of nearly 40 athletes representing under-15 and under-13 levels made their bow at this level last month in Crawley.

Even though the team came fifth out of six in the match, there were some very encouraging signs for the rest of the season.

With more than half of the title-winning Division Two champions from 2017 having moved up into the higher age group, the squad had very much of a new look to it, especially in the U13s where all but three of the 15 athletes were newcomers to the team.

The club’s team managers are confident that a mid-table placing is well within the capabilities of an improving group of young athletes.

At Crawley, the best performances of the day came from the under-15 boys where

throwers Oliver Beach and Vinnie ConteSmith went through the whole day unbeaten as a pairing.

Vinnie had just the better of things in the opening event, the hammer, while Oliver proceeded to take the initiative in both discus and shot with a 10.67m best in the shot the highlight of the day.

In the under-15 girls, Millie Grant started with a win in the hammer while Fleur Hollyer set a new personal best in the 100 metres.

Fleur also showed her versatility in both javelin and high jump, two events which are part of the heptathlon if she decides to go in that direction as an under-17.

In the under-13s, Fionn O’Murchu led from the front with a third place in the 800 metres and a new PB of 7.86m in the shot.

In the girls, six athletes showed a variety of talents to cover the 18 events in the programme, including primary school pupil Grace Bishop, who completed the 1200 metres, 150 metres and shot.

The iconic race laid on by Chichester Runners and Athletics Club is on Wednesday, June 20, at 7.30pm.

Chi City Ladies urged to enjoy a tough end to 'long hard season'

Hastings trip for Middleton MIDDLETON CC face a long trip to Hastings tomorrow as they look to bounce back from a disappointing start to the Sussex Premier season.

Sean Heather's side suffered a heavy 164-run defeat to Roffey at home on the opening day of the season.

Middleton now must try pick themselves up ahead of the trip to Hastings & St Leonards tomorrow (midday).

Having picked up just six points from their first match, Heather's XI will want to make sure they do not lose too much ground on the teams above them.

Things started badly against Roffey, a side that finished second in 2017.

With big scores from Theo Rivers (65), Ben Manenti (60) and Jibran Khan (55), the visitors posted an imposing score of 281 for 7 in their 50 overs. In reply, Middleton never really got going. With only four players registering double figure scores, they were skittled out for 117 in just 31 overs.

In Division Two, Chichester Priory Park made a good start to life in the league by chalking up a 47-run win over Lindfield.

After being put into bat at

Goodwood, Joe De La Fuente top scored with 44 in Chi's total of 197-7 in 45 overs.

Priory started quickly, with the ball with Matthew Geffen (3-41) and Jay Hartard (3-24) leading the attack. The visitors were eventually dismissed for 150, leading to a comfortable Chi win. Next up is a trip to Bexhill tomorrow (12.30pm).

Fellow Division Two side Bognor did not start the season as well despite an excellent 74 from Joel Baker.

After putting hosts Haywards Heath in to bat, the home side registered 248 all out with Tom Woolnough taking 4 for 40.

But Bognor were unable to get near the target despite Baker's half-century, being bowled out for 183.

Next up is a home match against Mayfield at the Regis Oval tomorrow (12.30pm).

In Division Three West, Pagham will be looking to make it two wins from two as they host Roffey 2nds tomorrow (12.30pm).

The Nyetimber Lane side beat Worthing by three wickets in their opener with Rico Webb putting in an excellent all round display. After taking 4-32, he scored 56 to guide Pagham home.

CHICHESTER City Ladies assistant manager Aaron Smith is urging his side to enjoy the final two matches of the season after a 3-0 win against QPR sealed a top-eight finish in their first ever Premier League South campaign.

City had QPR on the back foot from the first whistle and went ahead on the hour mark when Laura Ingram headed home Lauren Cheshire’s corner.

Jess Lewry added a second with a wellstruck low driven shot and Alex Collighan curled in a third on the final whistle.

Next up for seventh-place Chi is a home match with second-place C&K Basildon this Sunday (2pm) before rounding off the season against leaders Charlton on May 20.

Smith said: “We have already exceeded our targets for the season. We want to win every game and we will go into the games to win them. But if I could pass on anything to the players, they have had a long hard season, now enjoy the final two games.

"Playing teams like Charlton and C & K Basildon for us a few seasons ago was a dream. Now we are here having already beaten Basildon this year in the FA Cup, it shows what the progress we have made.”

Derby draw for Pagham and Chi

PAGHAM management duo Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds have signed on for another year as the Lions look to go one better next season.

Fans flocking to Nyetimber Lane have been treated to some excellent football this SCFL Premier campaign as the young side put together a promotion push. Despite falling off the pace in the final month, the Lions sealed a third placed finish with a 1-1 draw against neighbours Chichester City last weekend.

The Callum Overton strike, which levelled the match after Jimmy Wild's opener for Chi,

also meant that Pagham scored 100 goals for the league campaign for only the second time in the club’s 115-year history.

Even with just seven points separating them from promotion to the Isthmian South and losing heavily to Chi in the final of the RUR cup, the chairman said he was delighted with the season.

Shea said: "We are over the moon with third place finish. It has been a very competitive league this season so to be third and to be in with a shout until right to the end has been superb. I've been really pleased with how

things have been going all season.

"We have recently secured the services of the management team and we have started speaking to players so we are ready to push on for next season."

Fellow SCFL Premier side Chichester City, meanwhile, had to settle for a sixth place finish in the division. Miles Rutherford's side were also in contention for a top two finish for much of the campaign. But four losses in their final seven games saw Chi slip down the table and left many at Oaklands thinking just what could have been.

Fans can reflect fondly on a cup win and a record-breaking FA Vase run to the last 16.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham put themselves in a strong position to return to senior football at the second time of asking.

Daren Pearce's side secured second spot in the competitive division after a 3-1 victory away at Bosham on Bank Holiday Monday, after goals from Jake Goulding, Thomas Atkinson and Harry Gregory.

Combined with a 4-0 victory away at Upper Beeding on Saturday, Sids finished one point ahead of Jarvis Brook in third.

With the Recreation Ground meeting step six requirements, it's now up to the Sussex FA to decide if Sidlesham will be promoted to SCFL Division One next season.

Bosham had to settle for a fifth place finish but they did lift the Division Two Cup after a 1-0 win over champions Rustington.

Chi College teen wins national title CHICHESTER College student Aliya Seehawong has helped Pulborough Rugby Club to a national championship.

The 17-year-old was part of the under 18 girls team who beat Newark 36-7 in the Under 18s National Final last weekend.

Aliya, who is studying biomedical science at the college, has been playing rugby for three years.

She became interested in playing after watching her brother compete.

She said: “I feel very proud. We’ve been undefeated all season, we’ve got a really strong team so we were very happy to have won the championship.”

Aliya also trains as part of the Chichester College Rugby Academy.

Since joining the academy, Aliya was selected to play in the AOC South East regional rugby team and recently competed in a Rugby 7s competition in Nottingham.

Aliya said: “That was a really good experience. "we won four out of our seven games, playing against some big sides.

“I started rugby three years ago, so I’ve come to the game later than some of the other girls but I’m really enjoying it.

“I like being part of a team, all working together with the same goal.

"The Pulborough team, the academy and the regional team.

"Everyone is really friendly and we support each other."

Rocks face a nervous wait for the FA's step three shake-up BOGNOR REGIS Town FC face an anxious wait to see which league they will be playing in next season.

Following this season's relegation from the National South, the Rocks will be re-allocated into step three of the Football League pyramid. But quite who they will be playing next season has yet to be decided.

As part of a revamp of the level below the National League, the FA agreed in January to expand step three to four divisions.

An announcement on the allocation will be made today (Friday) which will see Bognor placed in the Bostik Premier, alongside clubs from the south east; or the Southern League, which has sides from the south west.

The decision by officials in Wembley could have a big impact on the Rocks' future, with manager Jack Pearce, pictured left, admitting some players may not re-sign because of the extra travelling.

Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "I'm just going to wait and see. We want to be in the Bostik as there's no doubt that the Southern could have an impact on us.

"That will be a smaller league. It's not up in the Midlands as some seem to think as there's a new league in the Midlands but there will be a few games in the West Country.

"If we do have a few games that way [the West Country], it could have an impact on the Brighton-based players."

Pearce made the comments as rebuilding work for next season begins.

Retention letters to about 12 of last year's squad have been sent out. But Pearce does not expect any individuals to make a decision until there is more clarity on which league the Rocks will play in.

Two players he hopes will stay on are right back Calvin Davies and midfielder Doug Tuck, who shared the player's player of the year award at the club's presentation evening.

Pearce was full of praise for both.

He said: "What's interesting is that one of the things levied against us this season was the lack of physicality, which I do not disagree with. So it is interesting that the two shortest players on the team got the top award.

"Calvin has that wonderful attitude to the game and his body language is very infectious.

"He tries really hard and wears his heart on his sleeve, which is a great thing.

"It means that you find it hard to say he's had a bad game as even when his passing is not spot on or his defending is slipping, you can never take that attitude away from him."

"As for Doug, when you look at how slight he is and you see these big players around him you think that he will get blown away.

"But he always shows tremendous ball manipulation, in that ball manipulation he is by far the best in the league. His passing range is excellent."

Tuck and Davies share award ROCKS' fans old and new packed into Seasons for the annual presentation evening.

Despite the team having a difficult season on the pitch, spirits were high at the annual event, which sees players, supporters and officials come together to celebrate the best of the campaign.

The full awards were as follows: - Player's player of the year - Calvin Davies and Doug Tuck (joint) - Supporters' player of the year - Calvin Davies - Leading goal scorer - Ollie Pearce - Chairman’s Cup - Ryan Purvis - Most improved player - Tommy Block - Goal of the season - Jimmy Muitt - Sportsman of the year - Richard Essen - Special recognition award - Darin Killpartick Further awards were made to James Crane (400 matches), Ollie Pearce (200) and Harvey Whyte (200).

Manager Jack Pearce said: "It was a good evening and the right people got the awards "I know some find it hard to believe when we have been relegated but the spirit among the players has been very good all season.

"That gives great hope when you can keep a group together. It was excellent. You would never believe we were struggling."

WELCOME back to what is my final column for the season.

We rounded off the season with a 2-1 loss to Dartford.

I thought the team performed well for Dabba in his last game as coach and our last game of the season.

It’s been a disappointing season but I think I am more confident going into next year and I feel we will do better at the lower level.

At times I thought we made the Vanarama National League South look upside down as we had decent chances to go in front early on.

But Dartford took a two-goal lead and then Ollie Pearce’s penalty at the end was too late.

Of course, everyone was keeping an eye on the Havant versus Concord game which was eventually won by the Hawks 3-2 thanks to a late goal by a certain Jason Prior.

Havant have now secured promotion as champions for the second season in a row.

Not bad! Fair play.

I was glad to be able to go to the end of season players’ presentation evening.

I was surprised by the big turnout. It was great to see players like Kristian Campbell there who had made a long trip to be present at the evening.

I gave Ray Page a lift as we are both from Littlehampton and sat on the same table as Ken, Dave and Dennis who are diehard fans supporting the team home and away.

My views on the awards given out are as follows: Appearance Awards – Ollie Pearce and Harvey Whyte notched their 200th appearances for the club. A fantastic achievement and true loyalty shown there. And James Crane also reached 400 appearances this season which proves to me how much big an asset he is to the team. Now for the next milestone lads!

Goal of the Season – Jimmy Muitt (vs Leyton Orient) – What a goal that was! I think you could have argued that

Ollie’s goal against Bath City was a fantastic strike too, though Jimmy’s was built using the passing game we are renowned for and the strike was sublime, so overall I felt it was the right choice.

Leading Goalscorer – Ollie Pearce – It was neck and neck with him and Ibra Sekajja all season but in the end Ollie notched the title with a late penalty against the Darts! Well done Ollie.

Most Improved – Tommy Block – I fully agree with this, Tommy has proven at a young age that he can step it up even at Conference South level. I hope he stays next season.

Sportsman Award – Richard Essen – Well deserved. I'm going to miss my friend in the press box. Richard does a lot for the club behind the scenes and if it wasn’t for work commitments he would still be able to run the tannoy. Alas it is not to be.

Chairman’s Trophy – I didn’t know Ryan Purvis personally but I thought it was the correct decision. Gone but never forgotten.

Supporter’s Club Player of the Year – Calvin Davies – I thought he was superb when on the pitch! It was a shame about the red cards, but you have to admire his passion to perform. He did just that this season. Calvin - well done!

Player’s Player of the Year – Doug Tuck & Calvin Davies – Tucky has been great this year too. Sometimes I find his performances go unnoticed.

The players couldn’t decide on this one so both won the award. I’d say Calvin cleaned up this year!

I hope everyone enjoyed the evening as I did and I will be there next season whether we are in the Southern League or Bostik League.

Personally I want us in the Bostik again due to more local derbies, but if we are in the Southern then it means new teams to visit! We shall see.
