Support for ice rink revealed THOUSANDS of residents have called for a permanent ice rink in Bognor Regis.

THey have said they want the attraction to be included in the regeneration schemes being compiled by Arun District Council for the town.

A petition with their demand was presented to the council on Wednesday night by Bognor Regis Civic Society’s deputy chairman, Hugh Coster.

THe formal submission of the 2,479

signatures took place at the council’s latest full council meeting.

By exceeding the 1,500 threshold, it will have to be debated at a future meeting of the full council.

Outside the meeting, Mr Coster said: “We closed the petition after just a month because the signatures came in so fast that our 1,500 target was passed before we knew it.

“If we had continued, we would have

easily had 5,000 signatures or more, but that simply wasn’t necessary.

“All we wanted to achieve was that Arun should debate the matter positively and sensibly.”

Arun’s chairman, Cllr Jacky Pendleton, told the meeting: “A petition has been received from Bognor Regis Civic Society requesting a permanent ice rink for Bognor Regis.

Kendra's African visit to help lives A BOGNOR REGIS pupil has become the British face of an international aid agency.

Kendra Diston, 13, of THe Regis School, was the first person other than a celebrity to be chosen by Unicef UK to front its publicity campaign for this year’s Soccer Aid fundraiser.

She visited Lesotho to film a promotional video about the work the charity has achieved with the money raised by the starstudded game.

THis can be viewed on Unicef UK’s website and is available on the website of the First News paper for young people.

She has also written an article for its print edition. THese will be seen by some 2.5 million people in all.

Kendra said: “THe first couple of times I watched the film it made me cry. I was nervous at time about what people were going to think about it but I’ve had a really positive feedback to it from my family and friends.

“But people can never experience what I experienced. You don’t know what it’s really like out there unless you see it.”

Kendra was chosen to go on the unique visit because THe Regis School is so highly rated by Unicef UK. THe school held a video competition for students who wanted to visit the country of some 2 million people near South Africa.

Kendra’s entry recalled her late nan’s six years helping ill children in Africa and her desire, as a person blind in one eye, to see a UN charter calling for disabled children

to enjoy the same life as everyone else, put into action.

She was joined by Unicef UK's communications manager, THom Sayers, from April 4 to April 9 in Lesotho’s capital, Maseru. Her first day saw her visit a school of some 300 pupils with a water pump and toilets installed by Unicef UK and British government aid.

Mr Sayers said: "Day two took us to Sentabale - a charity set up by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho and one of Unicef's partners in the country. Here, Kendra learned how sports, including football, can be used to boost children's confidence and help them to overcome challenges in their everyday lives."

She was interviewed by a journalist, with whom she is still in touch, and saw how the children mix with others and play sports.

She also went home with one of the girls, Lindy, and followed her evening routine. THis included cooking the meal, washing up and cleaning before she did her homework.

But she was spared her previous hour walk each way to a water pump thanks to the tippy tap of sticks and water bottle installed by Unicef UK and the British aid.

“THe children in Lesotho are so happy with what they have got,” said Kendra. "We take something like water for granted."

One thing Kendra has adopted from her visit is THe Wash Club song about hygiene.

“I don’t go a day without thinking about it,” she said. "It's in my head."

A HOMELESS individual in Bognor Regis has been given a written warning about living in a public open space.

THe individual has been issued with the warning by Arun District Council.

If they remain, the council will issue a community protection order which gives the council the power to move the person on from their current pitch in Steyne Gardens.

A council spokeswoman said: "Attempts have been made to engage positively with the individual to make them aware of the availability of hostels and other services offered by partner agencies. Unfortunately, there are occasions when an individual chooses

not to engage with our services and we need to consider enforcement options.

"In these cases, and after much consideration, the council will issue a community protection order which gives powers to move individuals on.

“THe council’s community safety team have two dedicated homeless outreach workers who work with frontline homeless agencies and antisocial behaviour teams.

"All known homeless and insecurely housed individuals are reviewed at a monthly multi-agency meeting, which has proven positive outcomes for the reduction of homelessness and the visible impact on the local community.”

Post Newspapers – publisher of the Bognor Regis Post and Chichester Post - is celebrating the success of its links with Lidl in Chichester.

THe growing retailer has become the first outlet we supply directly to have 1,000 copies snapped up every week.

THat number has grown and grown in recent months to reach the four-figure milestone to reflect the popularity of the Portfield Way store.

Editor-in-chief Adam Cunard said there could be no better way to celebrate the newspapers’ second anniversary.

“We are delighted to have reached such a significant milestone just as we reach our second anniversary.

“THe recent increases in the number

of copies we supply to Lidl in Chichester reflects the growing popularity of our papers,” he said.

Lidl store manager Gareth Busby said: “I was quite shocked to realise how well it was doing. People grab copies of the paper on their way out as they are placed near the door.”

Mr Cunard said he was determined to continue to produce a quality independent newspaper which provided an alternative to the established media.

“We set out to become the best free weekly newspapers in the area and our distribution figure for Lidl in Chichester shows that we have achieved that.

“We always try to achieve a good balance between the editorial content of our newspapers, which we know our readers enjoy, and the advertising revenue we need to pay for our costs.

“All sections of the printed media face increased competition for advertising nowadays but we are determined to keep on getting better – and to continue to provide many more must-read moments on Fridays.”

But he added none of the successes would be possible without the newspapers’ thousands of readers or the continued backing of our advertisers who know that spending money with us pays off in promoting their goods and services.

Some 30,000 copies of the Post are distributed each week to a variety of pick-up points in large and small outlets.

A proportion of that print run is distributed from our printers by our specialist contractors to several of the large supermarkets. Each of these outlets can exceed 1,000 copies a week.

Swimming Lessons

PEOPLE power has given the civic heart of Bognor Regis added protection.

Support from residents and community groups has led to the town hall being recognised as an asset of community value.

It has now joined the scores of other buildings given that status around the Arun district.

THe decision gives the community six months to raise the money to build the building, which is 89 years old this month, if its owner - Arun District Council - decides to sell it.

Bognor Regis Town Council announced the news in the past week.

Its members wanted the town hall, where they are based, to be registered to enable them to have a say if its future role is threatened in any final regeneration scheme put forward

by Arun for the neighbouring Regis Centre site.

Cllr Martin Smith, who chairs the town council's community engagement and environment committee, said: "I would like to thank all of the people who supported this nomination.

"THe town hall is now firmly on the Arun District Council asset register, which means, if they do decide to sell the building in the future, the community has a six month window to raise the funding for the sale through community right to buy, should they wish to do so.

"THe town hall is an iconic part of

the town's heritage and we hope it will continue to be used as a building for the community."

THe town hall was built on the corner of Belmont Road and Clarence Road in 1929. Its foundation stone was laid 90 years ago this month.

Its value to the town's past was shown by the government's decision in January 2003 to make it a Grade IIlisted building. THis came after earlier fears about its future which resulted in a petition of more than 10,000 names by the town's civic society.

THe latest bid to preserve its role saw five community groups back the town council's view of the town hall benefits to Bognor Regis along with 17 written comments from the public and 30 submitted online.

Bognor Regis Heritage Partnership, Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester and Hotham Park Heritage Trust were among them.

One of the supporters commented: "It's a Grade II-listed building and part of our heritage - it's where local people can see local decisions being made at council meetings."

Another stated: "A town without a town hall has no focal point."

Arun assessed the comments and decided the building should be placed on the asset register. THis gives the town council time to get the funding needed to buy it on the open market.

Councillors will have six weeks to decide to bid and six months to buy it.

` Town TV series TOP ACTOR Toby Jones is to set in star in a BBC comedy based on Bognor Regis.

Don't Forget the Driver is the first programme he has contributed to as a co-writer and will be screened on BBC2 in six episodes in the coming weeks. It was announced by the BBC on Monday as part of its new season.

THe comedy comes after the success of The Detectorists, in which Jones starred.

He will play coach driver and single dad Peter Green in what is described as a dark comedy drama.

He said: "We hope that Don't Forget the Driver will be an unusually funny drama about small town Britain and the joys of coach travel."

A BBC spokesman said the series focused on a life of ordinary routine and how it can change by accident.

` Houses planned OUTLINE plans have been submitted to build five houses on the site of a bungalow in Walberton.

Mr and Mrs Andrew Davis have asked Arun District Council to approve the demolition of the bungalow in Yapton Lane and its replacement with three detached and two semi-detached houses.

` Jimmy returns A NORTH BERSTED man has returned home safe and well.

Jimmy Leedham returned to his property last Friday. He had been reported missing to Sussex Police on April 14.

Bar's licence under threat A BOGNOR Regis businessman has admitted he failed to meet all his licensing conditions before he opened because of a lack of cash.

Daniel Slade faces an anxious wait until next week to find out if he will be allowed to continue to run Tao – Sladesbars Ltd in the High Street after he faced councillors on Wednesday. He confessed to lacking money to fulfil all the terms he agreed to meet – including managing noise - when his premises licence was issued.

“I don't have enough money to keep the business going should it be closed or should licensed activities be stopped,” he said. Choking back tears, he said: "Excuse my emotion, as you can imagine it is a bit stressful. I take on the chin that I brought this on myself.

“As far as any additions you put on the licence for noise, I am running a business, it is successful and it is making money. I was desperate because of finance and I believed the business was safe to open.”

THis led Sussex Police to ask Arun District Council to review the licence because its officers believed the breaches of the conditions undermined public safety and preventing crime and disorder.

At the meeting, its chairman Cllr Robert Wheal said: "We feel that we have got a lot to go through so we will delay our decision for the statutory five days when all parties will be notified of our decision."

THe committee could decide to revoke the premises licence, suspend the licence for up to three months, remove the designated premises supervisor, modify

the licence’s conditions or take no action.

THe licence was issued on June 3, 2016, but the business, formerly McDonalds, did not open until December 23, 2017.

THe first inspection was made on January, 31 2018, and identified 15 breaches of the conditions. In addition, staff were identified as having no awareness of the conditions and no relevant documents could be produced. Some conditions have since been met.

At the meeting, Arun licensing manager Sarah Meeten said the licence application included a modern bar, kitchen, grill, restaurant and entertainment lounge with full grill menu and a Sunday carvery. But the inspection found no kitchen and the alfresco dining area used for smoking.

Mr Slade said he could not offer a carvery because of unexpected competition. He also confirmed he could not pay for a kitchen at a total cost of £22,000-24,000.

"THis goes against my counsel, but I will put my hand up and admit my naivety in all of this. It was a massive project I took on.

Bognor has become a bit tired and Tao has brought a new excitement to it. It took me nearly three years to build it," he said.

"Technically, I had over a year to look at that licence and make sure everything was right. I concentrated on the build side of it and getting the premises to a state to get it open. Money disappeared quite quickly. I should have had emergency plans for that."

Cllr Wheal said: "I've come to understand this was a lack of capital from the beginning. You were struggling to pay for all these things."

Town mayor's search for heroes to join in his final week in role A LAST call for superheroes has been made by the Bognor Regis town mayor.

Cllr Phil Woodall is hoping for a gathering of the costumed characters to start the final week of his year in office.

He is staging a gathering of the comic caricatures at 2pm this bank holiday Monday to launch his seven days of scariness.

He said: "I hope to see as many people dressed in the costumes as possible. It will look really good if a lot of residents come along to join me.

"I will give everyone who turns up a medal and I'm hoping to obtain prizes from some local businesses for the best dressed adults and juniors."

THe meeting place for the fancy dress

competition is the Place St Maur in Belmont Street. Cllr Woodall will lead a parade of the characters along the seafront to the pier and back.

"It should be a fun time for about 90 minutes to two hours," he added.

He will follow Monday's occasion with a series of activities intended to end his year as the town's senior elected resident with some heart-stopping moments.

Tuesday will see him lifted aloft on the hydraulic platform at Worthing Fire Station. He will visit the 170m tall Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth the next day before a planned glider flight and an adventure on a zip wire.

He will follow these with a speedboat trip and water walking off Bognor Regis.

Women's centre launches urgent campaign for cash

AN URGENT social media campaign has been launched by a Bognor Regisbased women's centre.

My Sisters' House has begun fundraising to help it find a new home to enable hundreds of women in the area to gain access to its unique services.

THe community interest company runs the only women's centre of its kind in West Sussex and desperately needs a new home after the provider of its current main premises has taken it back.

Julie Budge, founder and chief executive of My Sisters' House, said it was involved in the search for funding and a location to act as a focal point for its work.

It has provided safe, tailored, empowering and holistic support to women who are victims of domestic violence in the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas.

It offers a drop-in service and holds a domestic abuse surgery as well as confidence courses to inspire women to live to their potential.

But the growing demand for its services caused Mrs Budge and her team to search for an additional location.

THis search appeared to have ended last January when they moved into empty offices in Clock Walk off the High Street.

THe large space was offered free of charge by its owner and would have enabled My Sisters' House to expand.

But unresolved teams of the lease with the landlord will lead to the centre to be evicted from the site today.

THis will see all its operations switch back to the original shopfront location of 300sq ft in London Road next Monday. THis had been kept on and served as a women's community hub.

But Julie said: "THis cannot accommodate us long-term because it is bursting at the seams."

Girls donate their hair TWO YOUNG girls from around Bognor Regis have donated nearly two feet of hair to help children without any.

Tia Partridge and Milleigh Wright saw their locks hit the floor to help the Little Princess Trust create wigs for children who have lost their hair because of medical treatment.

Between them, they sacrificed 21ins of hair last Saturday as well as raising £650 for the charity.

Cassie Partridge, the mother of nine-year-old Tia, said: "Tia has had waist-length hair since she was five years old, only ever having it trimmed by myself a couple of times a year.

"THis was a huge change for her and we are very proud. She is so pleased she has been able to help poorly children with her hair and even more so that they've raised enough to pay for two wigs as well."

Tia and Milleigh's kind-hearted actions began

when Mrs Partridge had some 10ins of her waistlength hair cut off about three months ago to donate to the Little Princess Trust.

Tia decided to help as well and Mrs Partridge asked Lotus Styling, where her haircut had taken place, if the company would help out. One of their stylists volunteered to go along to the Santander branch in Bognor Regis to do the cutting.

Mrs Partridge works at the bank and one of her colleagues nominated her grand-daughter, Milleigh, ten, to donate her long hair as well.

THe link with the bank means Mrs Partridge can apply for it to match fund the amount Tia and Milleigh have raised. *Mrs Partridge is also Santander's branch community champion and gave away more than £26,000 locally in Discovery Grants to help local charities and hopes to do the same again in 2018.

Arun is involved at differing stages in proposals for its Regis Centre and Hothamton car park sites to boost the town with multi-million pound investments.

Mr Coster said the civic society did not want to dictate where the ice rink should be located. THe petition was concerned with the principle of incorporating it into the proposals.

“THere are many potential sites,” said Mr Coster, “and that can be decided later because it depends on other factors.

“And it is also important to remember that the petition says the rink could possibly be multiuse, allowing all sorts of alternative attractions to be offered in, say, the summer months.”

THe temporary ice rink last Christmas on the Place St Maur showed the popularity of such a venue.

“THe important thing,” added Mr Coster, “is that Bognor Regis has a vibrant and busy attraction, which was proven by the temporary ice rink at Christmas to give visitors a reason to keep coming here on a repeat basis to enjoy our town.

“And, alongside that, the multiple uses would ensure the all year round financial viability needed to make the project a success.

“We look forward to a positive and forward-thinking debate by councillors at their future meeting.”

In 1989, an outline proposal by a private company for an ice rink in Bognor Regis failed to be developed.

Drug-making couple jailed A BOGNOR REGIS couple have been jailed for making illegal steroids.

Chris Young, 55, and Tracy Robinson, 51, both unemployed, of Marshall Avenue, were sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday. THey were convicted on March 20 after a 12-day trial.

Young was sentenced to a total of nine years in prison. Robinson was sentenced to a total of three years behind bars.

THe steroids were made in an improvised laboratory set up in a tucked away blue metal portable container at an industrial site at Howards Acre in Hook Lane, Aldingbourne.

THis was uncovered by Sussex Police last May with controlled drugs with a street value of at least £340,000 inside.

Detective Constable Andrea Watts said: "THis search and the subsequent arrests show that we take reports from the public seriously, even those that come in anonymously.

"People involved in the use of steroids are oblivious to where it is coming from.

"Little did they know it was in some sordid yard. THey think they are buying it from a clinical laboratory with scientists in white coats. But the reality could not be further from the truth and they are buying their steroids from a lab where the drugs are produced in a container with no recourse to complaint or test procedures."

During the six months before the raid, Sussex Police had received anonymous reports of anti-social behaviour at the site. THey found Young in the lab.

Extensive financial investigation found he had bought laboratory equipment, machines, supplies, raw materials, packaging and labelling since at least

February, 2007. THe equipment had been delivered to their six-bedroom house valued at £430,000.

THe haul of substances in the lab included more than 14 litres of injectable steroids, 219,000 steroid tablets and 214,000 of prescription-only medication, together with dozens of kilos of raw powders and liquids for future production of thousands of tablets and injectable drugs.

Young was believed to have traded as Wildcat Research Laboratories for more than ten years and illegally made steroids and offered them for sale with prescription-only medications without any licence or qualifications. THe couple had amassed assets of about £1m they failed to reveal to authorities from which they claimed means-tested benefits.

Sentencing the couple, Judge William Ashworth said they had enjoyed a lavish lifestyle. Young was the primary operator, though Robinson knew what was going on and was happy with the lifestyle.

He said with the "large amounts of money coming in from drug sales the fact that you continued to claim benefits for ten years would be something that the public would be aghast at."

Young was convicted of four counts of money laundering £343,382, producing and possessing with intent to supply Class C drugs and with fraud for income support, tax credit and council tax benefit.

Robinson was convicted of seven counts of money laundering £448,816 and with income support, tax credit and council tax benefit fraud.

She was found not guilty of a count of money laundering £30,000 cash.

Workshops will give firms the chance to boost trade MARKETING on a small budget is one of the topics available for free for town centre businesses in Bognor Regis.

It will be followed at the same time on May 31 by a workshop about the presentation of businesses to

encourage customers to buy products or services.

Bognor Regis town centre manager Toyubur Rahman said: "THey are free to attend and have been secured through an additional grant awarded to the BID. THere will be more workshops taking place, for example on data protection, customer service and social media."

A CRACKDOWN on dog and litter fouling around Bognor Regis has been toughened.

Arun District Council has given enforcement officers who issue on-thespot fines for the offences extra powers for controlling dogs.

THis means they will be able to issue fixed penalty notices for owners who break rules to keep dogs on leads, dog exclusion orders and refusing to put a dog on a lead when asked.

THe extra powers will take effect from May 15. THat date will also see the size of fines increase.

All those related to offences with dogs will go up to £100 - £75 if paid within 14 days, compared to £80 and £50 currently.

For littering offences, the fine will increase to £80, reduced to £65 if paid within 14 days, from £80 and £50.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, cabinet member for technical services, said: "THe enforcement of littering and dog fouling

offences started off as a one-year trial but was extended because it was really showing results.

"THe council has now decided to increase the powers of the officers to include dog control offences.

"One of the reasons for this is because information we've received shows that, when dogs are off leads in prohibited areas, a fouling offence is more likely to be committed.

"Our residents are very keen that we clamp down on the minority who spoil our public places for everyone and we've listened to their concerns."

Seasonal dog controls in some coastal areas remain in place.

Between May 1 and September 30, dogs must be on leads in the main seafront promenade areas of Felpham, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Dog are excluded from these areas of beach during this period.

Town is set to unite for sight

` Pond drainage FINAL work to solve flooding problems around Aldwick Duck Pond should be carried out this summer.

THe £10,000 scheme has seen a custom-built pipe made to take excess water from the pond on the north side of Aldwick Road across to the watercourse through Aldwick Green on the other side.

Aldwick Parish Council applied for funding from the county council's Operation Watershed programme. It received £98,000 for various works.

News of the latest installation was given by parish counci chairman Lilian Richardson at the annual electors' meeting last THursday.

` Art exhibition SCORES of paintings are set to be on display this weekend at Pagham's annual art exhibition.

St THomas a'Becket Church, in Church Lane, will host the latest of the events. Tomorrow will see visitors able to visit from 10am5pm. THe exhibition will again be open midday-5pm on Sunday and 10am-5pm on Monday.

Help blossoms for town's gardeners COMMUNITY gardeners in Bognor Regis could find their numbers doubled.

THey were delighted with the initial response to an open afternoon. Eight people signed up to join them in the first half of their four-hour session out of the 12 people who had gone along.

One of the current gardeners, Margaret Huntingdon, said: "We need people to be interested in the town.

"We don't need people to do what we are doing. We are happy to carry on doing that but we want people to work in other areas where they can help to improve the town."

THe four-strong gardening group was formed in November, 2011, and has concentrated its efforts on the Sunken Garden between the Hothamton car park and West Street.

THis had seen them receive the It's Your Neighbourhood award from the Royal Horticultural Society for the past four

years.

But Mrs Huntingdon said the proposal to regenerate the area with a linear park, flats and shops meant they were keen to take on other planted areas elsewhere in the town centre which were likely to survive for longer.

THey had already begun to turn their attentions to the planter in front of Morrisons in Bedford Street and the raised flowerbed in the alley alongside the store to Queensway.

But she said: "THere are many other areas in which people can make a difference. It's all about people wanting to do something nice in their area."

THese included the seafront mounds and Gloucester Road.

Unite4Sight is being held from 11am5pm in Hotham Park. THe students hope for some 3,000 people to go along to enjoy the day in the beautiful surroundings.

"THe day will be a family fun day with lots of wow factors to look forward to.

Some of them are a colour dance, silent disco and Disney hour."

School chosen to be showcase for work of Unicef around the world MILLIONS of schoolchildren around the country will be watching Bognor Regis pupils put the fun into fundraising.

All 1,500 students at THe Regis School and many of its 150 staff were filmed this week in a first for the Unicef UK. THe British arm of the international organisation will use the video of the sponsored obstacle course challenge to promote its biannual Soccer Aid spectacular next month.

THe film is being sent to every school around Britain to encourage them to raise money - to be matched by the government - for the good cause and help to improve lives of children who are less well off. It will also be available on Unicef UK's website.

Tuesday's special day at the school was unique in the history of education at the Westloats Lane site. One of its assistant headteachers, Caroline Saunders, said: "I've been here for more than 20 years and this is the first time we have got involved with a cause on a scale like this.

"We have been involved with Unicef for about six years and this is the biggest event we have done for it.

"We were the only school in the country asked to do this and we are honoured by that. It's because we are a gold level Rights Respecting School."

Unicef UK's communications manager, THom Sayers, said THe Regis School was one of the few in the country: "THis film will be used this year and next year to promote our playground challenge.

"It will demonstrate to other schools

how much fun the day is.

"We are really impressed by everything THe Regis School do as a gold Rights Respecting School."

THe main feature of the day was the obstacle course on one of the artificial football pitches used by the school at the neighbouring Arena Sports Centre.

A central part of the filming was a mass participation on the course by 200 participants, cheered on by all the school's Year 8 pupils. Principal Mike Garlick and Mrs Saunders took part.

Its nine challenges were devised by a team of the school's Rights Respecting ambassadors along with its Student Voice members and sports leaders. Staff assisted in the final stages.

One of the ambassadors involved was Megan Bryant-Lawson, 12. She said the obstacles included basketball, a short tunnel, a hurdle, football dribbling and crawling under a camouflage net.

"Building the course was all about teamwork, skills, patience and accepting other people's ideas. We didn't reject them. We accepted them into our ideas.

"It's the first time I have ever done anything like this. I want to change someone's lives and help them with the things they don't have and which we take for granted," she said.

"People have found the course really interesting. THey are excited by it and they keep coming back.

"THey understand why we are doing this - to help children and promote Unicef.

It's been an awesome experience."

One of those who kept going back to tackle the course four times was Reece Sheppard, 13. He said: "It was good to challenge your friends. It took about three minutes to complete. THe hardest part was the camouflage net because people kept getting caught under it. THe easiest part was probably the basketball.

"I've enjoyed the day, with a lot of opportunities to make new friends and keep fit. Unicef is a good organisation because it helps children in need around the world."

Other events included a penalty shootout in which Mr Garlick was put on the spot, pictured middle right, and paying to wear casual clothes.THe school hopes to raise ÂŁ1,100 for the UN to create a safe space for children in natural disaster areas to receive care and treatment.

THis year's Soccer Aid between England and the Rest of the World takes place on June 10 at Old Trafford and will be shown on ITV. THe teams will include Olympic gold medal athletes Usain Bolt and Sir Mo Farah, chef Gordon Ramsay, singers Robbie Williams and Olly Murs and international football players like Michael Owen, Robert Pires and Clarence Seedorf.

THe last game in 2016 saw England win 3-2 watched by 70,000 spectators.

Soccer Aid has raised ÂŁ24m since it began in 2006. THe money has provided life-saving food, vaccines and clean water.

` Support service A LEADING housing association, which runs two sites around Bognor Regis, has received a 96 per cent satisfaction rating for its round-theclock lifeline.

Hanover Housing Association's Hanover on Call service handed more than 475,000 calls. THese included nearly 315,000 incoming requests for help and 165,000 scheduled outbound calls.

Hanover controls Runnymede Court and Gateway Lodge in the Bognor Regis area.

THe on call service helps to ensure residents maintain their health and wellbeing while keeping them safe in their homes.

THe retirement housing provider has passed an audit for the service to show its continued compliance with an industry-wide code of practice.

Its head of assistive technology, Helen Roberts, said: "THese results demonstrate the commitment we have to providing a first-class lifeline to residents..."

About 12 of the hundreds of calls received by the service each day from its 600 properties around the country are major emergencies.

Angie speaks on pensions CAMPAIGNER Angie Taylor has gone on air in Bognor Regis for the first time to spread the word about pensions.

Angie was interviewed for about an hour on Radio Respect as part of its aim to give members of the community the chance to talk about important matters.

Chris Collins, the internet-based station’s joint founder, spoke to Angie about the impact of the treatment by different governments of women and their increasing state pension age.

Angie, who is a committed member of the town’s branch of the Women Against State Pension Inequality group, said: “We still want to let people know about what the government has done to their pensions.

“THere may well be women born in the fifties still around who are unaware of the changes to the state pension age.

“Or they could have been informed in 2011 that their qualifying age was increasing to 62 and not know that it has gone up since then.

“We want to keep getting the message out there and to keep as many people informed as possible.”

THousands of women in West Sussex born between 1950-59 have seen the time they can start to receive their state pensions increase to 66 very quickly.

Bognor Regis resident Angie, 63, said: “Going on to Radio Respect is the perfect platform for us. THe two organisations sit well together.

“Radio Respect is about promoting mental health and talking about matters to do with that.

“THe increasing pension age for women is putting a lot of them under stress. THey are having to work many years longer and those without a job can find it very

hard to get another one.

“THeir health can also be deteriorating and they can have their husbands or partners to look after and, perhaps, their parents as well – and their health is also looking to be getting worse.”

THese problems were on top of the financial concerns caused by missing out on several years of state pension payments.

“THere should be more respect for us,” said Angie. “Most of us have been working for 48 or 49 years and we still can have another two years to go.

“Part of the problem is that everyone is

different. THere can be five women born in the same year and each one of them will have a different pension date.”

Chris said tens of thousands of listeners were likely to have tuned in to last Friday’s broadcast from the radio station's West Street studio on his 7pm10pm slot. Some emailed questions and took part in a live chatroom.

“It’s good to have representatives from different organisations being interviewed.

"It’s about helping people to get their viewpoints known. People are now contacting us to be interviewed and

that’s really good.

“I would happily interview all the community interest companies (CIC) in the Bognor Regis area,” he said.

“We are a CIC and I know how hard it is to make yourself known and get your voice heard.”

Many of the interviews concern the radio station’s role in increasing recognition for mental health matters and informing its listeners about the latest developments.

"I'd be quite happy to become a talk radio station and not play any music," added Mr Collins.

Siblings are among best for charity SIBLING Bognor Regis marathon runners Nigel and Nicola Fitzsimmons are still totting up their sponsorship.

THe pair know they have raised some least £5,000 for the National Autistic Society by sweating their way around London.

A week still remains for supporters to donate to the brother and sister. But the charity has told them they are likely to be in the top ten fundraisers among its 180 runners. THeir total amount raised is set to top £260,000.

North Bersted resident Nigel, 43, said: "We think we're on track to raise £5,000, which will be amazing."

THey gritted their teeth, strengthened their resolve and reminded themselves why they were running.

"As much as we trained, researched and so on, I don't think anything could have prepared us for the feelings and happenings on race day.

"THe heat for one was intense, the hottest London Marathon on record we understand, and so having trained

in mostly sub-zero temperatures, it proved to be a challenge from the off.

"As nervous as we were, we also had a great sense of calm between us, knowing that everything we'd put into fundraising - all the events, hard work, arguments, and training in the morning - was all coming together and it was like a moment of glory, just to embrace."

THe pair completed the run together in 5hr 45min and were inspired by a person very close to them who is on the autistic spectrum.

Nicola, 45, of Aldwick, said: "Everything people tell you about the crowds at the London Marathon is true.

"THey are absolutely fantastic and, as we had our names on our running vests, absolute strangers were shouting our names out for what felt like the entire 26 miles. It's incredible.

"We found it a real challenge and we hear people saying it's both the best and the worst thing they've ever done, which we now understand.

"We're now on the hunt for another - possibly Paris, Rome, Norway or Barcelona, so we can feel the buzz again and better our time.

"If anyone is having the slightest thought about doing a marathon, all we can say is...do it."

ARMED forces veterans will be better supported thanks to a near £150,000 funding boost.

THe money - from the Ministry of Defence's armed forces covenant fund - will go towards expanding local support for former military personnel who often find it hard to access public services.

THe grant of £147,888 over two years will be used to enhance existing veteran drop-in centres and set up new ones in areas where they are found to be needed.

As well as offering practical advice on matters like jobs and housing, the centres foster friendships and help ensure veterans with mental health difficulties or social care needs get the right support.

Cllr Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: "It is so important that veterans are given the support they need and deserve. So I am incredibly pleased to hear about this funding."

SOME of the most original sounds of the seventies will be heard in Bognor Regis tomorrow. THe David Bowie tribute band, Bowiesque, is performing at 8pm THe Hothampton Arms in London Road.

THis show will be followed at the pub by the next Rox Sessions Live on May 14 with an open jazz rehearsal for Bognor's Big Band for musicians who are at least grade five standard.

Dancers show skills DANCERS with disabilities performed at a Bognor Regis event with their first public show.

THe Chichester Down Syndrome Support Group's members joined together with the Suzanne Hill School of Dance from the Bognor Regis area and wheelchair dancers to put on a special performance at the Our Generation day.

THey topped off their set at last Saturday's event with a unique rendition of THe Beatles' Love Me Do in British Sign Language. About 50 dancers took part, from age four upwards.

Suzanne Hill said: "THis is the first time we have been to this event and the first time we have put on a performance like this. It's taken a lot of co-ordination but this is something that has never been done before.

"THis is a great day which has been put on by Kez Bridger. It's a day for young people which has been set up so young people can perform."

THe Down syndrome dancers have appeared on YouTube. THe association's events officer, Kath Lake, said it had opened up opportunities such as the appearance in Hotham Park.

"THis is a fantastic opportunity for the dancers. THey are really excited by this and they are loving it," she said.

One of the dancers, Isabelle Lack, 23, said: "Dancing is amazing. I enjoy everything about it. It's really exciting showing people what I can do."

Bognor Regis resident Claire Needs, 33, said she was keen to show someone in a wheelchair could dance.

"It's brilliant to do something that everyone else can do. I'm always being asked how I can dance in a wheelchair and today is a chance to show people that I can.

"THis is proof to people that, just because you are in a wheelchair, it does not stop you doing what you want," said Claire, who has cerebral palsy.

All the dancers were taught British Sign Language by tutor Eve Anderson. She said: "THis is getting the message out that it is a proper language. It is the first time I have done this in 20 years of teaching it.

I started with the alphabet, the numbers and then built it up each week."

THe bandstand performance was part of the showcase of young people's performing talents. It was the first of two days held by Bognorphenia.

THe opening act was the Rustingtonbased Outlaw Allstar Cheerleaders. THeir joint founder, Karen Finneman, said: "We have dancers from four to 21. THey like to show people what they can do. I've got 12 dancers here today out of 60 in total.

Events like this are really important.

"In today's society, a lot of children stay at home watching TV or on their PlayStations. THey don't get fresh air and don't get any exercise."

One of the dancers was Alisha Elliott, 11. Her mum, Katie Chesterman, said: "She was really shy when she joined two years ago.

She has grown in confidence since then and the dancers just love being together."

Others to take part in front of the hundreds of people who went along on the day included Savannah, A27, Work in Progress and DJ Charlee Hatcher.

Clown Tricky Nicky, pictured right, also added some fun, along with RepTylers and a host of other stalls.

It was the opening day of a weekend of music. Organiser Kez Bridger said she had been happy with the latest staging in

spite of poor weather for the third year running.

Cloudy skies and low temperatures persisted during both days.

“THe weather has been bad again but I’m still pleased with the event otherwise,” she said.

“THe comments I’ve had have been really positive. We had a nice stream of people throughout Saturday and very good feedback about the young people.

“People were really pleased we were supporting the kids and said it was good to see them. When I spoke to the young people after their performances, they were just chuffed to get the chance to perform.

“I think the Our Generation day is still quite new in only its second year and it needs to be built upon.

“I’m hoping we will be back on both days next year. I always think positively about that.”

Band rocks Bognor again MADNESS support act THe Aim again delighted the crowds in Bognor Regis.

THe South London band played in a concert with the House of Fun chart-toppers in front of 40,000 fans in Kent last summer.

And they topped the bill at the latest staging of Bognorphenia in Hotham Park on Sunday.

To mark the occasion, singer Grant Judges had the title of their third album, Feel Like Getting High, painted on to his left hand.

He said: “We are hoping the album will be out

by Christmas. It features all our own work, with songs and family, friendships, peace and love.

“We had a good time at Bognorphenia last year and we told the organiser, Kez Bridges, we would be happy to come back.

“She always puts on a very good show and we are pleased to support the good work of Bognorphenia in the community."

Guitarist Jamie Tongue said: “We can’t wait to play here again. We always get great support when we play on the south coast."

Grant’s hand was painted by Worthing resident Debbie Mott. She took along her restored child’s electric Vespa built in 1985 for their first visit to Bognorphenia. Her husband, Andy, said: “THis is only the second show we have taken this to. Everyone loves it and several people have wanted to buy it off my wife.

“One person offered her over £2,000 but she likes it so much she wants to keep it. My wife was a Mod in the eighties and always wanted a scooter like this."

She put her Vespa among the 50 scooters for adults on display on Sunday morning. Eight acts performed at the bandstand for Bognorphenia.

THey included Nic Dunnaway, Chichester Rock Choir, THe Regents and Holly Gregory.

` Wartime memories MEMORIES of the First and Second World Wars are being sought by radio volunteers in Chichester.

Chichester Hospital Radio's helpers would like to hear from people who can remember the 1939-45 conflict or handed down stories of the Great War. A spokesman said: "THese stories are to be recorded and broadcast during Remembrance Day week and the anniversary of the end of the First World War special programmes.

"We have not forgotten many served during the Korean, Suez and Middle East wars, so your stories are just as important."

THe memories can be happy or sad.

THey can be recorded at the radio service's studios at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester or the recording can be done in individuals' homes.

"We are a group of volunteers that produce programmes for the patients in St Richard's Hospital. None of our members is paid and all the money we collect goes to keeping our service going," the spokesman added.

Natasha's honour for her work with disabled f Peter Wells presents the cheque

Rotary helps to improve access A £4,000 cheque from Bognor Regis Rotary Club will help improve access for disabled people.

THe money was presented by the club's vice-president, Peter Wells, to Livability Ashley Place last week.

Club press officer Peter Stemp said: "THe money was from a legacy given to the club to help with disability access in Bognor Regis.

"It will go towards a new vehicle with wheelchair access.

"Staff at Ashley Place have built a good rapport with the local community and the provision of a vehicle with wheelchair access will enhance the lives of residents considerably."

CHARITY worker Natasha Coles has won a national award for her role in Bognor Regis.

Natasha was commended with a prestigious Princess Royal Livability Award for her work with the disability charity, Livability.

She has worked at Ashley Place and the previous premises of Ashley House for ten years and has made 2018 special with a fundraising drive for a mobility vehicle.

She said: "It's really important to me that disabled people get to do the same things as everybody else.

"Public transport can create barriers which lead to social isolation, but this vehicle will make a big difference to what we can do and where we can go.

"It's one way of connecting Ashley people with the community."

THe appeal has so far raised £7,000 of its £10,000 target.

As a charity, Livability grew from a merger of the charities, John Grooms and THe Shaftesbury Society. THe awards were presented last week by Nick AshleyCooper, the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury.

He said: "Working for radically caring

and inclusive communities was central to the faith and work of my ancestor - the 7th Earl of Salisbury.

"As vice-patron of Livability, I am proud to know first-hand how that founding vision continues to inspire the charity's staff, volunteers and supporters today."

Livability Ashley Place in King's Parade has 18 residents who have lived in the modern premises since a move from nearby Aldwick Road a few years ago.

Livability's Louise Bastable said Natasha fufilled its values of being enabling, open, courageous and inclusive.

Ashley Place is a residential home for working aged adults from 18-65 years. It provides accommodation for up to 16 permanent residents, with five respite rooms available throughout the year.

THe home provides specialist care for people with physical impairments and care needs associated with disability, within a modern environment, specifically designed for the autonomy of people who use wheelchairs, fitted with the latest assisted technology and adaptions.

DR VICKY BEATTIE, Clinical Lead for Urgent Care at the CCG, said: People have told us over the past three years that they find the current way services work confusing and don’t know where to go when they need urgent care for minor illnesses and injuries.

“Some people find it hard to get an urgent GP appointment when they need one. We don’t think this is good enough and want to make it easier for people to get the care they need.

“These plans will mean that anyone who needs an urgent appointment will be able to be seen within 24 hours - and mostly the same day.

“We will also be introducing two new Urgent Treatment Centres in area and extending the minor injury service in Bognor Regis to give people living around there better access to this type of NHS help when they need it most.

“This will all be supported by an improved NHS 111 service where people will be able to get clinically assessed over the phone and either helped there and then, booked an appointment or signposted to the right place for the care they need.

“This will mean you will only need to tell your story once and we will cut down on the number of people bouncing around before they get the help they need.

“We are confident this will be a less confusing way for services to work so that people can get the care they need quickly, and for most of the time, closer to their home.”

TRANSATLANTIC negotiations notwithstanding, Sainsbury's Chichester store was my port of call this week with a focus on flavoursome white wines for a summer afternoon and red wines for indoor evening supping.

Two white wines from Australia and two others of French provenance initially caught my eye, with the reliable McGuigan Estate from South Australia offering a 2017 Sauvignon Blanc for just £5. Crisp and dry (but not a vegetable oil) with citrus and passion fruit flavours to the fore, this wine is well balanced, has good acidity and is decidedly fresh and a snip at this price!

McGuigan wines are synonymous with quality and thus, for £1 extra, the 2017 McGuigan Reserve Chardonnay utterly failed to disappoint, being of a good vintage with crisp ripe apple and white peach on the palate and having a delightfully creamy texture culminating in a good subtle oak finish.

THis well-crafted wine is reminiscent of Southern Burgundy in style, but

at almost half the price and is one I wholeheartedly recommend as a summer evening post-work tipple!

My third wine selection is the rising star that is Picpoul De Pinet (move aside ohso-bland Pinot Grigio ) and for an outlay of seven readies I was able to procure a 2016 Baron De Guers Picpoul De Pinet from Pomérols in the Languedoc and from vineyards overlooking the sea.

Lovers of soft Chardonnays should like this example being fresh, exuding green apples with lemon and lime notes.

A good summer drinking wine and an eminently food-friendly one (excellent

THe other French white came in the form of a 2016 Château de La Pierre Côtes de Grandlieu Muscadet Sur Lie currently on offer for £7.50. THe old vine character of this wine is most evident with intense minerality affording an alluring texture allied to refreshing fruit flavours of green apple and pear.

Sporting a slight spritz, this Nantes Muscadet is an ideal summer's drink or apéritif given its delicacy and balanced acidity and pairs well with any shellfish.

Quant aux vins rouges, I opted to compare three Malbecs and one French

Médoc. THe Barefoot Californian Malbec was competitively priced at £5.75, but inspired me little with the jammy taste I associate with cheaper Argentinian Malbecs.

However, each to his own, I accept some people might have a more favourable reaction to this number.

Argentinian Malbecs these days are more comparable to Old World wines and command general respect and thus, for an expenditure of £7.50, I was able to avail myself of a 2017 Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Argentinian Fairtrade Malbec which proved to be smooth, dry and full-bodied with blackberry overtones and a hint of spice in the finish.

THe third Malbec was one of my alltime favourites, namely an Argentinian D.V.Catena Malbec of the 2015 vintage and on offer for £10. Just one sip can send you into transports of delight as this beautifully smooth and subtle Malbec hits your taste buds with its black fruits, black pepper spice, hints of vanilla and a decidedly long finish - a Bordeaux -style Malbec and one to savour!

Finally, the 2016 Pavillon La Tourelle Médoc , currently on offer at £8.50, was eminently quaffable and, with black fruit and berry flavours, would complement a roast beef lunch.

Allow the wine to breathe a while to appreciate the full fruit flavour and a wine well worth a try, à mon avis - À bientôt!

1. In a mini chopper, make a paste with the ginger, coriander stalks, onion and garlic, then set aside. Heat the oil in the pressure cooker pan and brown the meat well on all sides, then remove.

Fry the paste for 2-3 mins with 1 tsp golden caster sugar. Return the ribs to the pan and add the soy sauce, star anise, oyster sauce and enough chicken stock to just cover the ribs.

2. Bring to a simmer, cover and bring up to high pressure. Cook for 45 mins, then release the pressure slowly. Take off the lid, add a splash of vinegar and remove the ribs from the pan. Simmer the sauce down until reduced and intensely flavoured. While the sauce is simmering, mix the salad ingredients together. Serve each rib in a puddle of sauce, topped with a pile of salad and rice on the side.

INGREDIENTS • 2 limes • 140g golden caster sugar • 125g punnet blueberry • 200ml carton coconut cream • 284ml carton double cream • extra blueberries, to serve

Blueberry, coconut & lime ice cream

Method 1. Finely grate the zest from one of the limes and squeeze the juice from both. Put in a small pan with the sugar and heat gently, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add the blueberries and simmer for 2 minutes, just until the skins start to split.

2. Pour the blueberry mixture into a bowl and stir in the coconut cream.

Leave to cool. Whip the cream in a large bowl until it just holds its shape, then gradually stir in the blueberry mixture.

Put the bowl in the freezer

3. Remove from the freezer and mix it all together using a whisk. When it’s fairly smooth, return to the freezer for a further hour, then repeat the whisking one more time.

Transfer the ice cream to a rigid container, cover and freeze until firm, or for up to a month. Before serving,move to the fridge for 30 minutes to soften it. Serve with extra blueberries scattered over.

A healthier and longer life is only a heartbeat away IF WE have always maintained a very unhealthy lifestyle, such as excessive drinking, smoking, consuming processed foods etc, is it possible that we can turn the clock back on our health? Some studies have proven over time that by making certain lifestyle choices, we may be able to effectively turn back the clock 14 years in terms of mortality.

But whether the benefits observed in those studies are the result of good, life-long health habits or can be achieved by those who make changes later in life, needed to be confirmed. However, what was found was that a switch in mid-life, that is, in our late 40s to early 60s, to a healthy lifestyle that includes at least five daily servings of fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, exercise, and not smoking results in a substantial reduction in mortality over just the next four years. THis is surprising, not only because the benefit appeared so quickly, but also because the lifestyle changes were so modest. THe findings emphasise that making the necessary lifestyle changes is extremely worthwhile, and it’s never too late to get with the programme!

If we can get such dramatic benefits so late in life and in such a short amount of time, why can’t we just live lives of gluttony and sloth-like behaviour,

and then just clean up our acts around 50 or so? I know so many people that don’t wish to change at all. And that is perfectly OK. We all have free will and choices. But what if it is too late? What if your very first symptoms are your last?

Sudden cardiac death accounts for more than half of all heart disease deaths. Hundreds of thousands of people worldwide just drop dead every year. Sudden cardiac death is the first manifestation of heart disease for the majority of individuals, particularly among women, meaning they had no idea they even had heart disease until they were literally dying from it. For many, their first indication of the presence of coronary heart disease is their demise. THat’s why prevention is the key.

So, does prevention work? Women who don’t smoke, walk a half-hour a day, aren’t overweight, and eat a prudent diet, defined in the study as greater than average fruit, vegetable, nut, whole grain, and bean consumption, had a 92 per cent lower risk of sudden cardiac death. When it comes to sudden death, an ounce of prevention is truly worth more than a pound of cure, because there is no cure once you are dead. THat’s a fact of life! So why not try making some changes, starting today.

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which cover the start of a new era for its work.

BEAVER BRIDGES was on site recently to install the three special bridges connecting the rear deck structure of our new building to the Aldingbourne Country Centre.

THe largest of these bridges spanned 14m and weighed a whopping 4.4 tonnes. Beaver used a massive 300 tonne crane to lift the three bridges over the building. A very spectacular sight to see!

THe 4.2m tall stainless steel slide has now been installed between the first and ground floors and is currently wrapped Sir, I read with interest – and hope! – the article in the Chichester Post about litter, pictured above.

What a good idea it sounds to get community groups involved in the fight against fly-tipping, litter and dogfouling. If only everyone would 'take their litter home' what a more attractive county/country we would have.

I have a food for thought to suggest, based on the idea of the catchy phrase '20 is plenty' around school areas. It is this – when driving around the bypass or the A27, a few catchy notices about

With the main facade scaffold now struck, or removed, and the shingles glinting in the spring sunshine the true beauty of the building has been revealed for the first time.

THe external steel decking structure has now been installed, and we are progressing with the timber joists and composite decking. THis has allowed us to start the curved handrail system to the decking area.

Internally, the atrium scaffold has been struck and the huge bi-folding glazed doors to the decking area have been fitted.

Progress has also been made to the internal boarding, tape and jointing and the joinery and the carpentry works have moved on with the doors being hung and the kitchen fitted.

Externally, the groundworks are progressing as are the paving finishing works.

Our May half-term events will be starting on May 26 for an action-packed week at the country centre.

While the charity is taking every effort to ensure the country centre continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask visitors to bear with us during the development. THe trust thanks you all in advance for your patience and understanding while this exciting new development build is underway.

It was written in 1848. THe UK population at that time was in the region of 17 million. Today we are approaching 70 million.

FOUR works have been revealed as the winners of an arts competition for this year's arts and crafts festival at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.

THe pieces were created by fine arts students after they were inspired by West Dean's collection and archive. THis preserves the legacy of the college's founder, Edward James, as a great patron of 20th century. THe works will be displayed during the June 1-3 festival in West Dean House, home to the college, alongside work from the collection, and in the grounds.

Francine Norris, the college's director of education, said: "THe quality, breadth and inventiveness of proposals from our graduate diploma and Master of Fine Arts students brings West Dean's surreal heritage alive for today's visitors in what is one of the UK's most unique arts destinations."

THe four installations to appear in and around West Dean House are: Painted Paces by Emma Rimmer, pictured above - inspired by Edward James' Footprint Carpet created in the 1930s and on view in the house; Faust Stoff by Maud Boothby - an adapted version of the motif of the clenched fist used by Edward James as an image for his publishing venture in 1931; Vestiges by Cherie Lubbock - bound together using ties and sealed in cellophane, Lubbock's sculpture is a physical manifestation of support and protection; and A Conversation in Steel by Askild Winkelmann - a new piece of choreography by student and fencer Winkelmann is inspired by archive photographs.

ON A Friday afternoon, I was coming out of Iceland in South Street, Chichester, and walking towards the cross.

By the West Pallant entrance, suddenly a Labrador-type dog was barking loudly and pulling its owner towards the wall.

THere were several people walking towards Southgate and we all smiled at each other and then we saw what was happening.

Town's founder lived the dream in his resort Sir Richard Hotham began his seaside ambitions with a farmhouse I WAS once invited to provide a talk on the subject of Sir Richard Hotham - but not here in Bognor Regis, but in Merton, his home before he travelled to the south coast and developed his own seaside resort. THe area's historical association wanted to know about Hotham’s work after he left Merton. THis provided me with a chance to look at this man in a different manner.

Briefly, Sir Richard Hotham was born in the city of York on October 5, 1722, and was the youngest of five children to Joseph and Sarah Hotham. THere are no specific records of his formative years. However, he eventually moved to London and it is thought that he became apprenticed as a hatter.

Richard Hotham married Miss Frances Atkinson, aged 25, on December 1, 1743. THey were later to have one son called John, in 1751.

Sadly, however, he died after only one day. Mrs Frances Hotham died in 1760 and was buried on August 14 of that year. Within eight months, on April 7, 1761, he was to re-marry, this time to Barbara Huddart of the parish of St Margaret in Westminster. Barbara became Lady Hotham following Richard receiving his knighthood in 1769 when he was aged only 46.

Following a number of events, his health began to suffer and he decided to spend the summer months at the seaside. At the age of 62,

he arrived in our area staying at a farmhouse with Captain Blanchard, who was the captain of one of his ships. He returned to Bognor for a second year and bought his first piece of land, which contained a farmhouse, for the price of £200 from a George Moore who was a riding officer in the Customs. Once Sir Richard Hotham had decided to stay, he started work on building property as he found that the Bognor earth was very suitable for brick-making, a fact that had not been appreciated locally.

With local labour and materials, he rebuilt the farmhouse into a ‘commodious mansion’.

THis event was recorded in the parish register by the Rev THomas Durnford, MA, who was the vicar of South Bersted, curate of Felpham and rector of Middleton. THis event occurred on January 18, 1787, and the entry in the parish records read, 'THe first foundation stone of a public bathing place at Bognor in the Parish of Berstead was laid by Sir Richard Hotham Knt. At the house called by the name of the Lodge'.

Hence, Bognor Regis celebrates its birthday annually on January 18.

THere are numerous mentions of Sir Richard and his activities in the town, one of which states he spent £6,225 in 1788 purchasing land. He was eventually to own 1,600 acres.

to East Row with six houses and both of these constructions overlooked the area today known as Waterloo Square. His work initially began by developing his seaside resort bordered on the one side by the rife, which was situated between the resort and the village of Felpham.

Although he did ultimately buy property in the village itself.

In 1789, Sir Richard Hotham became known as Lord of the Manor of Aldwick, when he purchased the second half of the manor from Canon Miller for a reputed 4,000 guineas £4,200). His building continued when he purchased the dilapidated Fox Inn and built a hotel on the seafront. THis was situated at the end of West Street and had stabling for 80 horses and 15 carriages. During all this work, Sir Richard Hotham had not forgotten his roots and in 1791 he erected a memorial to his parents in Skelton church, north of York.

Visitors were starting to arrive, and in 1791, which was classed as the first main season, the rates for accommodation ranged from 5gns (£5.25) to 10 gns (£10.50) per week. THis was the year, which saw the inauguration of the watering place, known as Hothamton.

During the 1790s, there was a lot of development taking place throughout the district with Hothamton Crescent being built with 50 rooms and a tea room situated underneath its Dome. Spencer Terrace was a row of seven houses. Sir Richard also built his new home known as Chapel House, which was next to the original Bognor Lodge. On August 12, 1793, the Duke of St Albans was in the town to lay the foundation stone of the chapel, being built to allow visitors to have their own exclusive area for prayer. In 1794, John THwaites

of London installed the distinctive clock, and this fact is clearly noted on the clock, which is still operating today in the tower attached to the house.

Sadly, by 1795, matters were not proceeding well and lodging receipts for the year only amounted to £1,919, 5s. 6d (£1,919.325). At this time, the town was apparently receiving refugees from the French Revolution. It is reported that over £100,000 had been spent on the resort, although it was still losing money.

Royalty were beginning to arrive in the district such as when Lady Jersey took THe Dome for the months of August and September, in order to avoid going to Brighton.

In 1796, Sir Richard sat for a portrait and this picture clearly shows him sitting down, with his plans for Bognor below his arm. THis painting can still be seen today if you call into the town hall. Sir Richard Hotham continued to expand his ideal seaside resort, and continued to wish for royalty patronage. Building work continued, with new constructions rising out of the fields, overlooking the sea. But the dream came to an end on March 13, 1799, he died at his home in the resort.

THere are still reminders of Sir Richard Hotham available around the town. THe most obvious is that of the ice house, one of the few surviving in England, which is situated just outside Edward Bryant School. Another is that of the clock in Hotham Park House, which bears his name.

THe buildings along Upper Bognor Road, which include THe Dome, Spencer Terrace, Mordington and St Michael’s, which today we look at as flats or part of the University of Chichester were, in fact, part of his dream.

PostSport Falcons come out swinging and swoop for first silverware of season THE softball season may only be a few weeks old but Chichester Falcons have already swooped for their first silverware.

After a busy winter of indoor games, the Oaklands Park-based team headed to Portsmouth last weekend for their first outdoor tournament of the new season SSL Firstball.

True to form, the Falcons came out swinging.

In the group stages, Ally Warr and James Mortimore led the Falcons’ offensive charge, consistently slugging the ball deep into the outfield. As usual, the Falcons defence was tight on the opposition, marked by a series of catches in deep left field by Warr.

Ben Sawkins flashed some quick moves at shortstop and Veronika Green gunning the ball to Lucy Morris who made some dazzling stretches to beat out the runners at first base.

In the quarter-final, clever base coaching and a pep-talk from player/manager David Morris turned the tide in a low scoring game against the multiple league trophy-holding OAPs. Returning to their 'small-ball' strategy of manufacturing runs one hit at a time, the Falcons loaded the bases at the bottom of the last innings for Seita Sawasaki to blast a grand

slam 'sayonara home run' to take Chichester into the semis.

THe semi-final with Southsea Sharks turned into a great display of softball and sportsmanship.

Player/coach James Wheeler smoked the Sharks right fielder with a laser hit, bringing two runners home.

But a great relay from the Sharks had their pitcher, Andy Burgess, and Wheeler colliding with a big tag out at home plate.

After the two former Arun Panthers dusted themselves down and hugged it out, the bottom of the innings saw the defensive play of the tournament with Sawasaki and catcher Bronte Harvey showing some incredible game smarts in completing a remarkable trick double play.

Falcons made it to the cup final where they were finally bested by the Itchen Knicks but not without a fight. With bases loaded, pitcher Jason Mercer, crushed a home run way out into left, bringing in four runs to keep the game close but Knicks took the cup 16-10.

It is a good start to the campaign for the Falcons and promises plenty as the relatively rookie side continue to develop their all round game.

CRICKET: Middleton CC kick off their new Sussex Division One season tomorrow when they welcome Roffey to the Sports Ground (12pm).

Sean Heather's side performed well in the county's top tier last season finishing seventh in the ten-team league.

THeir opponents in the opener will be wanting to start well as they seek to better last season's second-place finish.

Elsewhere, in Division Two Chichester Priory Park host Lindfield at Goodwood (12.30pm), while Bognor travel to Haywards Heath (12.30pm).

Dragonflyers duo seal top five finish

THE future looks bright for Dragonflyers pair Lucy Hijmans and Libby Morton who put in a top performance in their first pairs performance.

Competing against teams from all over the UK at the competition in Southampton, the duo finished an incredible fifth position in the league's under-14 synchro event.

With the pair beating a number of UKranked female, male and mixed pairings, their immaculate timing gained them important points towards national finals.

In another strong showing for the Bognorbased Dragonflyers, team mates Izzy Hauxwell, aged 15, and 13-year-old Sofija Kalnicenko finished eighth in the under-18 synchro event. It was the pair's first attempt at this level and saw them take much-needed national ranking points.

Kalnicenko went on to take second position in the individual 13/14 League 1 contest over two routines. She later took the bronze medal in the final jump-off with her 8.3 difficulty

routine.

Hauxwell, participating for the first time at L1, finished 13th in the 15/16 yrs category.

Rosie Budge, who made the jump to L2 this season, and jumping a six tariff along with team mate Libby Morton, were also among the Dragonflyers trampolinists gaining individual points towards the Sheffield finals in November.

Coach Linda O'Leary described the team performance as 'a fantastic achievement'.

She added: "Dragonflyers are a tiny gym and club mark trampoline club with an excellent safety record who enjoy tremendous success at not only regional but national and international level.

"THe club is going from strength to strength.

We are now offering recreational sessions and anyone interested in trampoline lessons can see the full details on our website."

Dragonflyers hold sessions at THe Regis School for varying abilities throughout the week.

ATHLETICS: Chichester were edged out in their opening Southern Athletics League fixture of the season at Andover.

Coming just a week after the final event of the winter programme, the Sussex Road Relays, clubs have had very little time to prepare for the track and field outdoor season.

Nevertheless, all four clubs in the match - Chi, Worthing, Winchester and Andover - produced performances of high quality for this mid-April fixture.

Chichester made a great start to the 36-event programme over nearly five hours of competition and were leading the others in the early stages.

However, weaker events during the latter stages meant they were overhauled and had to settle for fourth place, more than 30 points behind Worthing in third and nearly 50 fewer than the hosts who won the meet.

It would be no surprise, however, if this proved to be Chichester’s toughest match of the whole season and the club is already looking forward to the next league match on May 20 at Poole.

It came as no surprise that Chichester’s in-form middle distance runners should be the most successful of the afternoon, with a clean sweep in both 800 and 1500 metres.

Ben Collins used his natural speed and a return to fitness to win the 'A' string 800m in fine style in a time of 2.01.2 and getting the better of his Winchester rival down the home straight with a convincing burst of speed to win by over a second.

Liam Dunne, in his first match for the senior team, won the 'B' race while Will Broom took the honours in the 1500m.

Other standout performances saw Max Lambkin win the gruelling 400m hurdles the club's second place in the javelin.

THe women's team were led by university pair Jenny Jakeman and Rebecca Brown, who scored an unexpected double win in the opening track race, the 400m hurdles.

Together with the double men’s win, this represented the first occasion that Chichester have gained maximum points from the two events.

Jenny was not finished on the track as she teamed up with another new under-17, Maggie King, in the 400m, with Maggie doubling up after running the 800m earlier in the day.

Sophie Wright used her recent good cross-country form to post a good time in the 3000m while Florence Smith and Maggie King added useful points to the club total in the field.

Overall, the match provided a springboard for the rest of the season with a greatly strengthened squad in prospect for the next fixture.

RUGBY: Chichester Rugby Club will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday, May 23, in the Oakland Pavilion, from 7.30pm.

All members are invited to attend and select the new committee for the 2018/19 season.

THe annual general meeting for the mini and junior section of the club has been arranged for Monday, May 14, beginning at 7:30pm.

Top six still a target for Chi City Ladies despite double defeats

Pagham seek final revenge PAGHAM will be looking for derby day revenge as they lock horns with Chichester City just four days after a cup final drubbing.

THe Lions were shocked on Wednesday when their near neighbours defeated them 4-0 in the final of the RUR Cup Final at Lancing's Culver Road.

Two goals apiece from Jimmy Wild and Dave Herbert sealed the victory for the Oaklands Park side.

Pagham's woes were completed in injury time when Ryan Cox was dismissed.

With Chi visiting Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) for the final SCFL Premier match of the season, Pagham chairman Tony Shea believes his side will be able to bounce back and finish the campaign on a high.

He said: "We are obviously disappointed with the result.

Chi played well and we didn't turn up.

"We can play better than that, we're really disappointed but we have had a really great season and I'm happy with the way things are.

"THere will be an extra incentive to get a result tomorrow. It's been a long, hard season for both sides so

I'm hoping it's competitive and played in the right way.

"We will wait and see what happens. While we cannot make any movement in the league, I will want some revenge from the cup defeat."

Despite the heavy loss in the cup final, it has been an excellent season for the Lions under their new managers.

THe joint management team of Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen have steered the young side to a top three finish in the very competitive county league.

Despite a run of just one defeat in 21 league games, it was not enough to seal a promotion spot.

But the 3-0 win against Hassocks last weekend thanks to Ryan Davidson (2) and Cox meant Pagham will finish above their rivals.

Central to the Lions' strong form has been a lethal streak in front of goal which made them the league's top scorers with 99 and the team with the best goal difference (+58).

If they collect the victory tomorrow, then they will finish five points behind secondplace THree Bridges and six behind champions Haywards Heath.

CHICHESTER City Ladies are still aiming for a top-half finish despite suffering two setbacks in the last week.

Matt Wright's side have put in a strong showing in their first season at the FA Premier League South level.

With three games left to play, City are eighth in the 12-team division and can potentially seal a top six finish.

But those hopes suffered a blow in the past week when they endured two defeats in four days.

THe first was a disappointing 3-0 home loss to Coventry United on Sunday, their second defeat to the Midlands outfit in a fortnight.

THat was followed by a 6-0 loss to titlechasing Charlton Athletic on Wednesday at Oaklands.

THe week was made worse when captain Emma Alexandre was stretchered off in the first-half of the Coventry match because of a knee injury and looks set to miss the remaining games this term.

THe Green and White Army hope to get back on track on Sunday when they welcome second-bottom Queens Park Rangers to Oaklands Park (2pm).

CHICHESTER City ended the season with title celebrations at Oaklands Park - although it was not the party they were planning.

Miles Rutherford's side spent much of the SCFL Premier campaign with the belief that they would lift the league title.

But a poor run around Easter saw Chi slip off the pace, leaving it to Haywards Heath to seal the crown with a convincing 6-1 victory at City's expense on Saturday.

It was a day to forget for Rutherford's depleted side, with Kieran Hartley and Rob Hutchings both seeing red.

Only Lorenzo Dolcetti brought some cheer to the Chi fans with a consolation in the second half.

City, who are now seventh, went a long way to amending the loss with the 4-0 cup victory over Pagham in midweek. THey face the Lions again tomorrow at Nyetimber Lane (3pm) knowing that a win will seal a final league position of fifth.

In SCFL Division Two, Sidlesham remain well in the hunt for a return to senior football after inflicting only the third league defeat of the season on leaders Rustington.

A second-half strike from Dan Bassil sealed all three points for Daren Pearce's side in the rearranged match on Wednesday and lifted Sids up to second in the league.

With a top-two finish required for promotion, Sidlesham will be hoping to hold off the chasing pack as they complete their fixtures.

THey travel to Upper Beeding tomorrow (3pm) before a Bank Holiday Monday clash with Bosham (11am).

With three points separating Sids in second and the Robins in sixth, Pearce's side know they will need to rack up six points or risk leaving things to fate.

Bosham's clash with their near neighbours on Monday will be their third match in five days. Last night they played Rustington in the final of the Division Two cup final at Nyetimber Lane hoping to win the trophy for the second time in three years.

THat will be followed by a trip to Cowfold tomorrow (3pm) before that rearranged grudge match with their local rivals.

Having won the league title last season it has been a season of transition for the Robins under new manager Gary Lines.

An excellent run since Christmas has seen them surge up the standings and they could still seal second spot.

Saturday's 1-0 victory over Worthing Town, thanks to Alex Barnes' second half strike, was their tenth victory in a row in all competitions.

Pearce explains FA's Wembley decision THE MOST influential man in Sussex football says the FA's planned sale of Wembley is not as clear cut as it has been presented.

Media reports suggest the Football Association is considering a bid from Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham owner Shahid Khan to sell the national stadium in a deal worth ÂŁ800m.

THe move could revolutionise English grassroots football and see widespread investment at youth, women’s and men's clubs across the area.

It has been reported that a deal could be completed in the next three months.

But Jack Pearce, who is manager at Bognor Regis Town and is one of just three national game representatives on the FA Board, said

that much remains up for discussion.

Pearce said: "At the moment, lots of what's in the national press is not necessarily as accurate as it sounds.

"All we have done at the FA is instruct our executive to continue negotiations, ask some fundamental questions and come back with some concrete guarantees that secure anything that we may decide on for next 40 to 50 years. THat will take a good period of time.

"THere will be benefits and negatives but until we have answers to those important questions no one could honestly give a yes or no at this moment in time.

"THere are far too many incomparables at this time."

Pearce focuses on positives as Bognor finish rock bottom BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce believes there's plenty of positives to take into next season despite finishing rock bottom this term.

A 2-1 home defeat to second-placed Dartford rounded off a disappointing National South campaign for the Nyewood Lane side.

Hopes were high at the start of the season that Bognor could put up a strong showing on their return to step two.

But after 42 games they found themselves bottom of the league and condemned to a swift return to the third tier.

But, providing a core of players remain at the club, the veteran manager believes the Rocks will be in a good position to bounce back at the first time of asking.

Pearce said: "We were the worst team at scoring goals and worst team at conceding them and those two things say you will finish bottom.

"But we were most probably in the top three in terms of controlling games through possession football.

"No one understands more than me that's a waste of time unless you create something.

It's a good base to start from as without that the only thing left are goals.

"Having said that, I have taken a lot of pleasure how hard the players have worked and the way they have tried to play.

"THe aim at the start of the season was not

got relegated. We did - but that was down to injuries to five or six players and the lack of a goalscorer than the quality of the players.

We're aware of where we need to improve."

THe Rocks rounded off the season in front of a bumper crowd of just over 1,000 at Nyewood Lane. Visitors Dartford had hopes of sealing three points so they would overtake Havant & Waterlooville to win the league crown.

At one stage, it looked like they might do it as the Darts went into a 2-0 lead.

With Havant being held along the A27, the visiting fans from the banks of the THames had hopes of lifting the league title.

But a late Ollie Pearce penalty for the Rocks combined with a winner for the Hampshire side meant Dartford were left with a consolation place in the playoffs.

For the Rocks, the match summed up much of the campaign - a performance that belied their position as the league's worst side but with too few goals and points.

Pearce said: "It was a tight game but in this match [and the game against third-placed Chelmsford on Tuesday] we had more possession and we actually created more chances than the opposition.

"On Saturday if we had been two up after 15 minutes they could not have complained and from the behaviour of their managers you could tell they were concerned with their team.

"Unfortunately, we were left with one goal from the spot which is a major problem for us."

THe lack of goals was very obvious across the whole season.

After 42 matches, the side netted just 41 times, less than one a game. And when they did score, more often that not the opposition managed to equal or better their tally.

A return of five wins from 42 games was never going to be enough to secure safety - and true enough the Rocks were 16 points behind fourth bottom when the final tallies were totted up.

Pearce added: "It's a difficult league and there's not a lot of difference between any of the teams when you think our opponents were second and third. THey were not going through the motions, they were desperate to win the games. I'm delighted with the players' attitudes but one goal from 180 minutes of football - that's what needs improving."

Work on rebuilding the Rocks begins now.

Letters to a number of players that Bognor want to retain have been issued and Pearce says he hopes the core of the squad - between 10 and 12 - will re-sign for the next campaign.

Whether that will be in the Isthmian Premier or the Southern League is still to be decided.

THe FA will wait for the play-offs to be settled before they complete the reorganisation of the step three level.

'Dabba very difficult to replace' FOR 13 years he has been a constant presence on the sidelines at Nyewood Lane.

But from next season the Rocks will be missing one of their most influential figures.

First team coach Darin 'Dabba' Killpartrick has taken the decision to step away from the game for a short time in order to recharge his batteries and spend more time with his family.

As he was completing his lap of honour after Saturday's match, the sentiment from the Rocks' faithful was very obvious.

From the changing room to the terraces, all were agreed that Dabba will be missed.

Paying tribute to him after Saturday's match, manager Jack Pearce said: "He has been a fantastic servant to the club and will be very difficult to replace. We wish him well and, hopefully, he will miss football and wish to return to coaching in the near future.

"If he does, then we will always try and find a place for him in our club."

Pearce said the news did not come as a shock to him, indicating that Dabba had informed him of his decision back in the autumn.

His focus turns to the task of reshaping the Rocks' backroom staff. A new first team coach will be essential, a new manager, too, could also be on the cards.

I'M WRITING this just a couple of days after the end of the season and the 2-1 defeat to Dartford.

On the whole, I think the lads did very well and showed determination that we didn’t want a team celebrating on our patch.

We knew what we needed to do. We were the better side for the first half and I thought we defended well as a team until the first goal.

But to get back into it as we did was credit to the lads. We defended well and showed that we were up to the challenge.

At times like that, you cannot help but think about this time last year.

Obviously, Dartford had a lot of fans with them. But when you look around and you see teams preparing for the playoffs it is inevitable to think about the promotion last year.

Our fans were very quiet on Saturday, which is understandable given the results this year.

THey were great, though, when it came to giving Dabba a proper send-off.

Personally, it means a lot as he has been great for me.

He was the one that got me into Bognor all those years ago. He was my coach when I was 16 at college and he has played a big part in my career over the time I have been at the club.

He has put a lot of time and effort into it but sometimes there are other things that are important.

He's got a young family so he understandably wants to spend more time with them.

We found out about it on Tuesday just before the Chelmsford match and shortly after the message went up on Twitter. All the lads are gutted to see him go but we all know why he has done it.

You only need to look at what he has done and what he’s given up. It was a fantastic send-off and we all wish him the very best.

Dartford's match was the final one of three tough games to end the season.

Against Oxford City, I thought we were very poor. But in Chelmsford and Dartford we played two teams in the play-offs. THey have put other teams to the sword but they beat us by a solitary goal.

THat’s our season - not winning and not scoring.

THoughts now turn to next season and speaking to some of the other lads the general view is that most are keen to stay on for another season.

Obviously, a big thing will be the manager.

It will be crucial as we are a club with a number of young ambitious players and the lads do not want to be left with uncertainty about who's in charge.

As for me, I’ve been offered another year's contract. I've not signed yet as I need to look at what league the club is in.

I’ve taken on a lot more responsibility at work recently and with all the travelling from my school in Worthing to Bognor it has been difficult.

If Bognor are in the Southern League, then that could be a step too far for me.

I don’t want to leave the club but my main employer is my main focus and I need to think about that aspect of my career.

As soon as I know what league we are in then I will make a decision.

THe first step will be to speak to Jack and let the fans know and the reason behind it.

Regardless, personally, I just want to get fit again and playing football again.

I've really missed it this year - it's not too hard watching the team when they are playing well but it is incredibly hard when a team you care about is not doing well and there's nothing you can do about it.

I've started my own pre-preseason so I am fit and ready for the new campaign. I've had six months off with the shoulder so I can't wait to get back at it.
