Sad clowns give town a miss CLOWNS will be missing from Bognor Regis this year.

Clowns International has reluctantly decided to scrap its party in the park for 2017.

THe organisation was unable to secure a date this month to stage the fun-filled escapades in Hotham Park and has decided to meet in private elsewhere this year.

Bubblz, one of the clowns heavily

involved in the international clown festival of the past two years, said: “We are sad that we are not coming to Bognor Regis this year. I think all our members would want to go back there.

“We asked to come to Hotham Park this month but it is booked for another event.

Unfortunately, our event is not going to happen at all. We are now asking our members to find out what they want to do for next year.

“I love Bognor Regis and I started coming to the town with the clowns in 2006. But we have to come to Hotham Park. It’s a ‘no go’ without the park.”

A small number of clowns were going to visit Bognor Regis this month for a private training weekend but they will going to the trainer in Ireland instead.

Clowns’ International began to stage an annual event in Bognor Regis in 1985.

THe event grew in popularity and size

each March and peaked in 1989 when it was the main event for clowns around the world.

Hundreds poured into Bognor Regis and delighted residents with their antics around the town centre as well as at a series of shows in and around the Regis Centre. THese always followed several days of workshops and meetings to allow the clowns to gain new skills.

Keely's street art plan for precinct STREET art is coming to Bognor Regis town centre next month.

Youth worker Keely Hardy is leading a group of creative young people in turning a location in the shopping area into a colourful focal point.

THe Create group will be outside the former Store Twenty One in the London Road precinct on May 12 and 13 to transform its recently erected whitewashed hoarding.

She said: “We need more young people to get involved. At the moment, we only have two members coming along on a regular basis. We have got a spray can artist and we have the opportunity to spray paint that hoarding. We are going to decorate it and make it into something that is quite classy.”

THe art is likely to feature the group’s name of Create to reflect a person’s creation, experiences, activities and end achievement of their lives up to 18.

“THe young people we have coming along have been absolutely brilliant. We have only been meeting for a short time and to get these two young people to come up with that kind of idea is great.

“I am looking to do a project which is sustainable. THere is no point me coming in for six months, building up something and then disappearing,” she said.

Last year saw the town council twice arrange for a seafront hoarding in Waterloo Square to be spray painted.

Keely began work in Bognor Regis a few weeks ago on a six month trial project for Bognor Regis Town Council through the Sussex Clubs for Young People.

She is the second youth worker on the project since it began last year. THe first left after a month and Keely said she was working more hours on the scheme than the eight a week for which she was funded.

A qualified youth worker, she has 20 years’ experience and is also working with the youth council in Worthing and Adur.

“I’ve been doing 28-30 hours a week,” she told Bersted parish councillors on her first presentation to councils in the area.

“THere have been a lot of studies done in and around Bognor Regis about the provision for young people. It was seen there was a need to bring in someone to engage with them and to empower them.

Keely is set to meet staff from THe Regis School and Felpham Community College to gain more support. She has also been to the Trees Estate in North Bersted.

She told councillors last week she was aware of the reports of anti-social behaviour in the town centre by some young people. But she said she would not be specifically targeting them. “If I put all my work and effort into one group of young people, what about the other young people in the town? I will be missing them out,” she said.

Cllr Hugh Carey said: “I don’t feel eight hours is anywhere near sufficient for what you are doing.”

Cllr Martin Lury said Keely could go on walkabouts around the town centre to seek extra young people to get involved. *Keely asked anyone with ideas to see her at the 39 Club off Glamis Street, from 5pm7.30pm on THursdays.

GARDENERS anxious to improve the public areas in Bognor Regis close to their homes have been invited to a meeting.

THe drop-in session from 2pm6pm next THursday, in Bognor Regis Town Hall's council chamber, is being staged by Bognor Community Gardeners for those who have a bit of time on their hands.

Margaret Huntingdon, one of the gardeners, said: "THose who go along can find out what we can offer them - insurance, garden know-how - and we can find out what they can offer all of us with a more beautiful

town.

"Hopefully, there will be before and after photographs of work that the Bognor Community Gardeners have done and photographs of areas ripe for enhancing.

"Also, there are parts of the town that need a little TLC, such as weeding and litter picking.

"THese include the Gloucester Road plots backing on to Butlin's, the mounds of the seafront and THe Steyne gardens to name but three.

"We hope that anyone interested will find the time to call in and see us."

Superhero Phil keen to tackle scary roles

f Town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall in superhero pose TOWN mayor Phil Woodall will be running scared in his last week as the leading citizen of Bognor Regis.

A quirk of the calendar has allowed Cllr Woodall to occupy the role for a 53rd week.

He is determined to make the most of the extra seven days with a packed programme of heart-stopping escapades.

THey will also provide a final boost to his charity fundraising for his two chosen causes -Alzheimer’s Society and Epilepsy Action.

Cllr Woodall said: “I have got a bonus week because I should be heading over the chain of office on May 7 and it is a bank holiday.

“I wanted to do some good with that week and came up with a range of activities that would really test me for a scare the mayor programme to raise

money for my charities.

“I don’t like heights and I don’t like going out on water – and I have included two events which involve just that.”

Cllr Woodall will launch his events on the bank holiday Monday of May 7 at 2pm. He is dressing up as a superhero and is calling for as many superheroes of all ages as possible to join him at the Place St Maur in Belmont Street for a fancy dress competition.

Prizes will be awarded in various age categories and then Cllr Woodall will lead the superheroes along the seafront to the inflatable slide near the pier for his first scary event. He hopes his fellow mayors from neighbouring town will be joining him.

THe next day will see him aim even higher by being taken aloft in the hydraulic platform at Worthing Fire

Station.

His aerial theme continues on Wednesday, May 9, when he will visit the 170m tall Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth with its glass floor.

THe THursday will find him become the first mayor to see Bognor Regis from a glider flight. A zip wire challenge will be next on Friday, May 11.

THe pace keeps up in Cllr Woodall’s final weekend as the town mayor, with a speed boat trip from Bognor Regis Yacht Club on the Saturday and a Sunday session water walking on the seafront.

“I’ve absolutely loved being mayor,” said Cllr Woodall. “I’ve attended 150 events at the last count about a month ago and it’s been a really good time.”

He is set to be elected as the next deputy mayor at the town council’s annual meeting on May 14.

ORGANISERS of a Bognor Regis youth club are celebrating being given their biggest grant.

THe 39 Club has been awarded nearly £10,000 from the Big Lottery Club to improve its premises.

Chairman Vicky Hennessy said the £9,810 would be spent on a range of projects at its premises off Church Path in Glamis Street.

THese included desks, chairs, materials to decorate the store room, a table tennis table, artboards, laptops and stationery.

"THis is the biggest grant we have had and the only one - apart from money from Bognor Regis and Bersted councils," she said.

"THe money is going to make a tremendous difference to us.

"It means we can make the club a bit more modern. It's a bit delapidated and stuck in the 1960s.

"THe club is becoming established.

It's good to know that. It has been seven years of hard work to get this far.

"I think it will become more well known through word of mouth than through social media."

THe club opened in February, 2017, for 11-14-year-olds in an annexe of the premises of the original 39 Club, which had closed many years earlier.

But it had taken Mrs Hennessy and her original helpers several years to get approval from the building's owner, West Sussex County Council, to open.

THe club meets from 4pm-6pm on Tuesdays and this week's session

attracted eight young people - the best attendance for some weeks.

THose young people enjoyed the first week with three theatre BA (Hons) degree course students from the University of Chichester.

Ellie Woods, Amy Webb and Chloe Holland will spend some five weeks at the club applying art to help its members. THis will involve painting the storage room and seeking the children's help to devise a website.

Chichester resident Ellie, 20, said: "THe children are really lively and have a lot of positive energy and are very willing to contribute.

"What is important about this module we are doing is the effect that art has on the children.

"We also want to focus on the positive aspects of the internet. THe internet can be dangerous, and the children are young, and we want to tell them the good points about it."

She was aware of the 39 Club through her visits in the past year to the county council's FindItOut centre, which occupies the rest of the former youth club.

Mrs Hennessy said she was also seeking new committee members and a secretary to help with its running.

It was seeking further funds from the county's Lions clubs at a presentation in Chichester next THursday as they assessed which youth clubs to back.

Any grant would be put towards continuing to hire the youth worker, Vicky Mitchell, who had been a big help since she started, she added.

` Rox sessions OAKVILLE PETE will be the musician at the next Rox Sessions Live event in Bognor Regis.

THe country music performer is appearing tomorrow night at THe Hothampton Arms in London Road in the latest of the music and arts charity's events.

University students are also staging Seaside Rox in Hotham Park from 10.30am-4.30pm tomorrow with live entertainment, activities tent, craft stalls, arts and crafts, food vendors and Punch & Judy.

` Salaries defended A 'rich list' which stated four Arun District Council officers earned more than £100,000 a year in 2016/17 has been dismissed as incorrect.

THe council said the details from the Taxpayers' Alliance were wrong.

Only the chief executive earned a six-figure salary for that year. THe three other payments were the result of redundancies aimed at saving the council money in future, a council spokeswoman said. Salary figures on Arun's website were also wrong for including pension payments.

Call for dog poo patrols ENFORCEMENT wardens are to be asked to patrol North Bersted to start tackling selfless dog owners.

Parish councillors have called for the officials who work for Arun District Council should be out and about in a well-known hotspot for dog excrement.

THey asked one of their ward councillors, Sue Bence, to urge that the site off Chalcraft Lane should be included on the wardens’ patrols.

She said: “I will ask the question. I can’t give a guarantee they will be here at any specific times.

“I walk around the streets of Bersted quite often and I see quite a lot of dog poo.

"People should be taking responsibility for their own animals – that’s the message we need to be getting across.”

She said the enforcement officers came from East Hampshire in an extended trial for Arun. THe fines they levied – £80 for dog’s mess reduced to £50 if paid in ten days – paid for their work.

Parish councillors decided to wait for two month for the response from Arun before they would take a final decision about to a resident’s request to buy a dog bin for the site in an alleyway used by dog owners to from Chalcraft Lane to a field.

Debbie Holcombe, the parish council’s clerk, said the person had called for the bin because the location

was frequently used as a dumping ground for plastic bags filled with dog’s mess. THis created an unhealthy situation, which smelled in the summer.

Arun charges £246.55 to supply a bin and £50 to install it. THere is also a £290.22 annual charge to empty it.

THe parish council had also been asked by residents to provide a bin for Shripney.

Cllr David Lainchbury, chairman of the parish council’s finance and general purposes committee, said buying two bins would be a big cost.

“I’ve said before that as the finances of councils become cut then the effect of that will cascade down to our level. THis is a sign of that,” he said.

“We have to be seen to do something about this. It’s an ever-present problem.

"As the population grows, and new housing comes on line, and there is added pressure on green spaces, we will get more of this.

“Arun appear to have street enforcement officers in other areas. If we want to do something about this, we must enforce it.

“It will only take one or two people to be picked up and word will get around like wildfire.”

But he said it would be unfair to buy a bin for one area and refuse the other request.

Cllr Wendy Kapp said: “THis has come up before in various other places in the parish. THis appears to be be more deserving.”

German students enjoy visit to park to learn about town history MORE than 20 students from one of Bognor Regis' twin towns had the chance to learn more about its past.

THe pupils from Weil am Rhein in Germany went on a tour of Hotham Park with Hotham Park Heritage Trust's members.

THe tour for the visitors from Kant Gymnasium was arranged by the trust with Bognor Regis Twinning Association.

Rosemary Warren, the trust's chairman, said: "THe tour gave the opportunity for the students to learn the history of Hotham Park House and the parkland.

"THe highlights of the visit were a visit to the Mad Hatter's Copse, pictured above, and a game at the Wildflower

Falls adventure golf course."

THe tour was followed by refreshments at the park's lodge.

THe park was originally the garden of the house built for the founder of modern Bognor Regis, Sir Richard Hotham, in 1792.

It is a Grade-II* listed building and is one of the oldest in the town.

THe heritage trust is 20 years old and installed the Mad Hatter's Copse last April as part of its programme of park improvements.

Next month will see it unveil a series of Alice in Wonderland sculptures at 2.15pm on May 27 to complete the trail based on the famous and popular book

by Lewis Carroll.

Mayor's visit behind scenes of new screen

PROGRESS on the newest leisure attraction in Bognor Regis has been welcomed by the town's mayor.

Cllr Phil Woodall made his latest visit to the emerging fourth screen at the Picturedrome Cinema - and was delighted to see the near £1m project taking shape.

"It's the first time I've been to see the work after I saw it soon after the start last summer," he said. "THere's quite a difference and I am well impressed by how well things are going.

various operators for 99 years. It is currently run by Picturedrome Electric THeatre Company.

THe site manager for the extension's contractor, Cheesmuir, Mark Cornwell, said frequent liasion with the operator had helped to limit disturbance caused by the extensive work.

He said: "We are due to hand over to the operator on May 30. It will be a bare plywood shell and it will be up to them to install seating, carpeting and other fittings.

"THis is a lovely building but the site is cramped. It's a nice project for us to do, though the logistics of getting materials in and out is quite difficult."

An average of 15 tradesmen a day, up to 24, were working at the site in four or five professions.

THis amount of work enabled the internal scaffolding to be taken out yesterday and the external scaffolding should be removed on April 30.

"By the end of next week, all the internal partitions will be up. At the moment, it is still like a building site," he said.

It is hoped the new screen will be open in time for the start of the school holidays in July.

Its capacity will make it the second biggest at the cinema.

HALF a million pounds of funding have boosted plans to create a modern business centre in Bognor Regis railway station.

Coast to Capital announced the financial boost this week for the creative digital hub proposals.

THe West Sussex County Council-backed scheme will turn unused spaces at the station into an exciting collaborative workspace for creative and digital enterprises.

THe work to fit out the hub is due to start this summer. It is planned to be open in the autumn.

An operator has been appointed and is set to be announced soon.

Jonathan Sharrock, chief executive of Coast to Capital, said: "We are committed to supporting regional projects which beneft the business community and this project is a fantastic example of this.

"Our region needs significant investment in the digital sector and the Bognor Regis creative digital hub presents a fantastic opportunity to create high value jobs which will benefit local residents and

THe event attracted backing from the EU one year. But the costs began to escalate and Arun District Council, which had been heavily involved since the beginning, withdrew its backing.

Bognor Regis Town Council took over for a few years to enable the event to reach its tenth anniversary in the mid-1990s before it also cut back.

THe event was revived in the early years of this century with the help of Butlin’s and continued for several years with a combination of activities in the holiday resort and around the town.

A short gap ended with the party in the park launched in 2016.

Some 30 clowns turned up in the first year for a parade and a picnic in the open space and about the same number from England, Denmark, the USA, Ireland and Scotland went along last year.

Several hundred people of all ages joined in the fun with them for a fun-filled afternoon.

“I’m committed to coming back to Bognor Regis,” said Bubblz. “I love the town and the event has worked very well in Hotham Park.

“It’s a suitable safe place for a parade and a picnic afterwards.

THat’s why we need the park.

“But we also need to know if Barry and Jenny Jones will let us use the Jeneses Arts Centre again. We don’t want to take them for granted."

Mr and Mrs Jones have allowed the clowns to use their centre for free in the past two years.

THe hub's aim is to provide a shared workspace for up to 150 businesses, which will create high-value jobs in the creative digital sector.

It will provide a space where start-up businesses and freelances can work side by side, share facilities and network and have access to training and support.

THe hub will also be strategically linked to the development of the University of Chichester's engineering and digital technology park, set to open this September, and could potentially provide extra space for creative digital students and graduates.

West Sussex County Council leader Cllr Louise Goldsmith said: "THe announcement of funding from Coast to Capital is fantastic news and just what is needed for the creative and digital communities in Bognor Regis.

"THe creative digital hub will stimulate business growth and job creation in this valuable sector."

Coast to Capital is a local enterprise partnership, which is a unique business-led collaboration between the private, public and education sectors.

Eyesore fear for flats plan CONVERTING an Aldwick house into five flats would create an eyesore, councillors have decided.

THey said the outline proposal for the dwelling in Princess Avenue was out of keeping with the surrounding area.

In particular, the crenellated parapet designed for the front would introduce an alien feature into the road and would harm its appearance, they agreed.

Arun District Council’s development control committee also decided last week three of the five intended flats were too small and would cause unsatisfactory living conditions.

THe proposed extensions to enable the five flats to be formed would result in an over-dominant form of development, they added.

THe decision followed a deferral of the plans at the committee’s previous meeting for a panel to inspect the site.

All five members of the panel voted against approving the development by Beverley Woodland.

Committee vice-chairman Cllr Phil Hitchins (C, Aldwick W) was among those on the visit. He told the committee: “We seem to have some crenellations at the top which are totally, totally out of keeping with anything else in the road.

“I fully appreciate some of the dwellings in the road have been converted to flats. I don’t think anyone would worry if these flats were fewer in

number.

“But we felt five self-contained flats, with the extensions added on, were not something we would welcome.”

Cllr Barbara Oakley (C, Middleton) said: “I have given a great deal of thought to this because of the conversions that have taken place.

"But I think the design, particularly with the crenellations is so ugly and so out of place, that I am going to stick to my original decision and object to it."

Cllr Dawn Hall (C, Pagham) said: “I do not have a problem with the house being converted to flats but I felt it would have an over-bearing impact.

“THere seems to be quite a mishmash of bits added on to the building, making it quite bulky. I am especially concerned with the over-looking of gardens to the Wessex Avenue properties.”

Mrs Woodland had told the council just before the committee meeting she had listened to the advice of planning officers before she had submitted the application.

Ten houses in the same road had been converted into flats. “Some of which are where the house has been demolished and a block of flats have now been built in their stead,” she wrote.

“THe houses that have been converted are mostly down the end of the road where my house is, surrounded by other conversions.”

A POPULAR farm in Slindon has closed to visitors after health experts received reports of a serious stomach infection from those who went to its lambing days.

Public Health England said it was aware of at least 14 people who had become infected by cryptosporidium after they had gone to Gaston Farm in School Hill.

THe incidents prompted PHE to issue a formal warning last Friday that anyone who had been to the farm should be vigilant about developing the symptoms of cryptosporidium. THe gastroenteritis can take up to two weeks to emerge.

It is caused by a tiny organism, which is most likely to have resulted from contact with animals shedding the organism in their faeces in this outbreak.

Dr Kevin Carroll, a consultant with PHE South East's health protection team, said: "Cryptosporidium causes vomiting and diarrhoea in those affected. Anyone suffering from diarrhoea symptoms is being advised not to attend school

Town hall should become community asset - council BACKING for a bid to declare Bognor Regis Town Hall a community asset has been given by a neighbouring council.

Parish councillors in Bersted say they agree with Bognor Regis Town Council the civic building should become an asset of community value.

If it is recognised as such an asset, and the building is put up for sale, members of the community can have up to six months to raise the funds to buy it.

THe deadline will see the owner – Arun District Council – free to sell it to any purchaser and at whatever price it chooses. THe Grade II-listed town

hall, in Clarence Road, was built by the former Bognor Regis Urban District Council in 1929. It was taken over by Arun as part of a national shake-up of councils in 1974.

Bersted Parish Council chairman Cllr Brian Knight said: “We should be supporting this. It should always be Bognor Regis Town Hall.

“I thought it was wrong that, in 1974, the government of the day decided to create district councils and take away all the assets that belonged to local people.”

Cllr Martin Lury said: “I absolutely support the chairman’s comments.”

` New homes bid A FRESH plan has been submitted for housing on a site in Flansham.

Pallant Homes has asked Arun District Council to approve its proposal for ten houses on land next to Bonhams and Flints in Hoe Lane.

THe developer's previous plan for 23 houses on the site was rejected

by Arun because it would adversely affect the character of the wellestablished rural hamlet.

Olivia Wright, secretary of the Flansham Residents' Association, has told Arun: "THere will still be a 20 per cent increase in houses, all at one end of the lane.

"THere will still be a new entrance with the removal of existing trees to establish required sight lines."

But Pallant Homes' planning agent, Robin Reay, says in a statement to the council the site is recognised as being suitable for housing and its proposed layout will provide an attractive residential environment.

"THe site has good access to local facilities and to public transport.

"THe site has a suitable vehicular access from Hoe Lane which can be provided with sightlines and access geometry to meet safety and technical requirements.

"THe site is not at risk from flooding and is not affected by significant noise from the A259," he says.

Town film studio seeking support FUNDING is being sought by a Bognor Regis film studio for its latest project.

Phoenix Rising Media is reaching out to the public to help to fund the short film, called Striativus, which will lift the curtain on loneliness and depression in everyday life.

A WANTED man with links to Bognor Regis is being sought by police.

Jules Siviter-Reid, 22, pictured below left, was originally sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment for conspiracy to supply controlled drugs in Hastings.

He was released on licence on February 14 but he had his licence revoked on March 15 on suspicision of re-offending.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "SiviterReid is described as white, about 5ft 9in, of slim build, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has links to Bexhill, Hastings and Bognor Regis, and Portsmouth in Hampshire.

"Anyone who sees him is advised not to approach him and call 999, or report it

Special centenary ceremony held to recall victims of RAF accident GUESTS have attended a special memorial service at Oving, near Chichester.

A centennial memorial service was held to honour the three airmen from 92 Squadron RAF killed in a flying accident.

On April 7, 1918, just a week after the formation of the Royal Air Force, two aircraft, a single seat Sopwith Pup fighter and a two-seat Avro 504K trainer from 92 Squadron, collided in mid-air over the flying station at Tangmere.

Fatal training accidents in the Second World War were not unusual.

At the time of the accident, the RFC/ RNAS had suffered 14,000 plus fatalities of which 8,000, well over half, occurred in training.

In the First World War, training had been more dangerous than combat.

THe Sopwith Pup was being flown by an American pilot, 2nd Lt Victor Raleigh Craigie, from Boston, Massachusetts.

He is buried in St Andrew's Churchyard, in Oving, alongside one of the pilots of the other aircraft, Captain Norman England from Streatham in London.

THe third pilot, 2nd Lt Clifford Hackman, who was also remembered on Saturday, was from Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, where he is also buried.

THe Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Susan Pyper, attended the service. She said: "I think it's so important for all of us, including our younger people in the cadets who have turned out today.

"It's so important that we don't forget and we learn from the past. We must never forget those who gave their lives for our freedom."

Caroline Nicholls, the High Sheriff of West Sussex, said: "I think it's critically important to be here. Not only to remember those who gave so much 100 years ago but also for younger people to see the sacrifices that were made."

As part of the RAF 100 programme this year, the Bognor Regis RAF Association branch held the memorial service at St Andrew's Church together with 92 Squadron, its association and the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

It consisted of a party of standard bearers and a guard of honour of

cadets. THe opening prayers were led by the Rev Brian Shersby, chaplain of the RAFA's 381 and 2351 Squadrons.

His address to the gathered guests was followed by the exhortation, the last post, a time to reflect, the RAFA dedication, reveille and the national anthem.

A flypast of representative First World War aircraft flown by 92 Squadron followed the service.

Chichester MP Gillian Keegan said: "It's the year of celebrating the RAF's 100 years so there's a big focus on the RAF and I think this story is really quite poignant, to be so young and to be training. People hadn't been flying that long and planes were all very new.

"To die so tragically in a training accident just before the war ended is very poignant. I think it's great that we remember these occasions and we do it so well.

"Organising all this, here in the churchyard in Oving to remember three pilots who died 100 years ago is a special thing to do."

` Homes' open day A BOGNOR Regis home is opening its doors as part of a worldwide event.

Aldwick House is joining in tomorrow's national care home open day. Members of the public will be able to go along between 2pm-5pm for a fun-filled afternoon of games, raffles and food.

A spokesman said: "THe open day is an international initiative that sees residents, relatives and members of the public join together at Aldwick House to create meaningful relationships within the local community."

David's set for London 2019 CANCER survivor David Crook is looking forward to being the oldest Bognor Regis area resident to run the London Marathon.

Super-fit Aldwick man David canoes, cycles and runs and will be benefit from a rule change from Sunday’s version of the world-famous event.

THe organisers have agreed to enable entries from those aged 76-plus – and David will reach that milestone in January, 2019.

He last ran the marathon in April, 2016, after his recovery from prostate cancer.

He was the fifth fastest man in his age group with a time of about 4hr 15min.

“I’m looking forward to running in the marathon again. I thought I had retired from it after my tenth entry having reached the current upper age group of 70-plus.

“But I’m not surprised the age group has been raised. THere are people in their 80s who are amazing. A few years ago, you would have thought that 75 was as good as it got to be running but there are people who are older than that these days,” he said.

David, 75, who is an accountant, takes part in a regular exercise regime. He runs an average of four times a week along the beach close to his home.

“It’s nice to be in the right spot to do it and to be able to keep on doing it,” he said. “But it does not need to take up a lot of time."

He has taken part in several athletic activities in the past year such as longdistance cycle rides.

Last month saw him complete the 42.2km Dual off-road ride in New Zealand, which involved cycling up the 600-year-old volcano on Rangitoto

Island. In all, the climb lasted for more than 1km and David completed the course in four hours and eight minutes.

He has also taken part in a 100km ride from Rotora to Taupo in New Zealand, conquered the Coast2Coast route of

Workers will jump for joy FINANCE workers in Bognor Regis will swap pounds for parachutes this weekend.

THe trio of employees at Nationwide Building Society are taking to the sky to help homeless people.

Claire Jordan, Sacha Stewart and Chloe Perry, 28, will be taking part in a freefall tandem parachute jump for Stonepillow.

THe customer representatives have raised at least £1,200 from their generous customers and relatives.

Sacha, 47, said: "THis is the first skydive we have done. We have held a lot of events for Stonepillow and when the chance came up for the skydive we agreed to take part. We're really pleased with how much we've raised. THe customers here are amazing. THey are really generous and really get behind us."

Claire, 28, said: "THe nerves are starting to kick in the closer the day gets. But it's an experience of a lifetime. I've always been a bit of a daredevil and I immediately said I wanted to do this."

THe skydive is set to take place at midday tomorrow, at 10,000ft above Salisbury.

One of Stonepillow's residents is also set to skydive for the charity tomorrow.

Saul Nightingale has been helped by its recovery service for the past four months and wanted to repay the charity.

He said: "I am sober now, thanks to Stonepillow. I hate heights. I get giddy looking over the edge of a multi-storey car park. But I am willing to go to any lengths to help with my recovery, even it if means chucking myself out of a plane.

"I feel privileged to be in a good place now and I want to raise money for Stonepillow to help others."

Saul is facing an emotional journey to the skydive. His father, who he has not seen for a long time, is driving him there.

He had raised £330 by Wednesday towards his target of £395.

Stonepillow is seeking to raise £98,000 towards the cost of its hostel in Ellasdale Road to help to cope with a 30 per cent rise in homelessness along the south coast in the past year.

A statement from the charity said: "THe project strives to be the most innovative service in the area by its commitment to staff training, development and client involvement.

"THe new Bognor hostel will provide short-term accommodation with support in a safe and stable environment for 16 residents.It will act as the primary accommodation response to rough sleeping and homeless individuals within the local community, assessing housing needs, as well as working with an individual's, often complex, issues."

AN EXTRA 200 police officers are to be recruited for Sussex.

Chief Constable Giles York pledged on Monday he was able to stregthen his force's numbers thanks to the rise in the precept it collects from council taxpayers.

THe new positions will be in addition to the 500 police officer and staff posts due to be lost in further cutbacks to save money.

CC York said: "Over the last few years, we have dealt with significant challenges created by the financial constraints in which the force has found itself.

"THis has meant difficult decisions have had to be made, resulting in fewer people than we had before.

"THis change in our financial position has created an exciting opportunity to strengthen areas where it is needed most."

He revealed the new funding would be used to strengthen local policing over the next four years, improve ways for the public to make contact and further modernise the service to meet new and increasingly complex demands.

CC York intends that additional officers should join local prevention teams to increase visibility and accessibility, encouraging people to talk and share their knowledge of their area and solve community issues such as anti-social behaviour.

Community investigations teams will also be beefed up to increase their successes in dealing with crime series such as burglary and organised crime.

More technology like automatic number plate recognition will also be installed in all frontline vehicles.

Market performance is a first for dancers YOUNG dancers at two Bognor Regis schools have performed together for the first time.

THe 38 children staged an energetic 25 minute showcase of their skills at the town's opening artisan market of the year last Saturday.

Aged from six to 15, they were selected from St Mary's Catholic Primary School and Bersted Green Primary School by their performing arts and dance teacher, Jennifer Jarmyn.

She said: "It's the first time the schools have merged under my direction. I hope to do more of it.

"THe children don't get the opportunity to do this, perform in public. Performing in their school halls is not the same as performing in front of people like this.

"THere is a completely different format to performing here and a completely different stage with people passing by all the time. Coming here gives them a lot of confidence."

THe performance took place on the pavement outside the church. It included a mixture of contemporary dance and a medley called Let Me Entertain You with its variety of styles like hoops and catching.

"Everyone has got something they can do," said Ms Jarmyn.

THe market was held in its traditional location in and around Bognor Regis Methodist Church on the corner of West Street and Waterloo Square.

It got off to a brisk start with 62 visitors counted into the church hall in

the opening hour in spite of the foggy conditions.

Joint organiser Chris Warden said she expected some 300 shoppers to visit during the day in keeping with the previous markets.

"We've got more stalls inside the hall than before," she said. "We've made room for 20 stalls by moving the tea and coffee into the church itself.

"By taking that seating out of the hall, it means we can get more stalls in it."

THe indoor stalls were a mixture of newcomers, such as a cheese merchant, and familiar favourites.

It was the same situation among the five stalls outside. THe new sellers included olives and plants after requests at past markets.

"We have listened to what people have wanted," said Ms Warden, who holds the markets with Michele Redford.

"We have also listened to the businesses around here and left the Little High Street open rather than closing it.

"We will review that for each market but it will be closed for the Christmas

market."

Afternoon entertainment came from Karen Etherington with singer Hattie.

THe markets started in 2016 as part of the efforts to boost the town centre.

THeir popularity saw four of them staged last year. Four will also be held this year.

THe next three will take place on July 21, September 15 and November 24.

Daredevil Myrtle's skydive BRAVE Myrtle Green has taken a leap of love to raise money for St Wilfrid's Hospice in Chichester.

THe 83-year-old from Bognor Regis signed up for the skydive after her late husband, Bill, was looked after by staff when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at home with all of his family around him.

"Marvellous Myrtle" as she has been affectionately nicknamed by listeners to Angel Radio, where she volunteers, completed the 10,000-foot freefall parachute jump on April 7 after a delay caused by bad weather.

She said: "I was a bit disappointed when it was first cancelled but it actually worked really well as my daughter had pre-arranged a visit from Canada so it meant she was able

to watch.

"I felt really elated when I came down. I wanted to do it again straight away. As I was waiting I thought I would get nervous but it all happened so quickly.

"Shane, the instructor, told me to get on the floor and the next minute we were out of the plane."

Mrs Green has now raised over £1,000 for the hospice and is already making plans for her next daring adventure with an abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth to raise money for Havant-based community radio station Angel Radio.

"I know it will be more physical, but if I am fit and well I will do it next year!" she said.

` Bus strategy survey BUS passengers have been asked for their views to ensure a good network of the vehicles around West Sussex.

THe county council is developing a new bus strategy to explore ways in which it can work with bus companies and other partners to help sustain and improve services.

THe council would like to hear opinions on proposals for the new strategy and any other suggestions people think should be included.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “Your feedback will inform our approach to and investment in bus services and community transport between 2018 and 2026, so this is a great opportunity to have your say.”

AN AUTOMOTIVE company with a site in Chichester is to refill people's water bottles.

Hendy Group has joined the national Water Refill Scheme to allow anyone to use their refillable water bottles at its car dealerships such as the one in Terminus Road.

Hendy chief executive Paul Hendy said: “We’re constantly looking at new ways we can drive down not just our impact on the environment, but the impact of those around us, too.

Daylight PDT: a treatment available for sun damaged skin that’s just like going for a walk in the park.

Photodynamic Therapy has been used for over 15 years to treat actinic keratosis and some types of early skin cancers. Actinic keratoses are pre-cancerous areas of the skin or ‘lesions’ which have been damaged by overexposure to sunlight. This causes the skin cells to grow at an abnormally fast rate. ‘AK’s’ generally appear on sun exposed areas such as the face and scalp, and become rough and scaly, large areas of AK are called ‘field areas’. It is very important that these areas are treated to avoid the possibility of them progressing into skin cancer in the future.

Daylight PDT is different to the conventional PDT treatment which uses topical creams and gels followed by a session using an intense pulsed light, which many patients find irritating and painful. Now, the Daylight PDT takes advantage of the reaction which occurs between the daylight and the cream. The chemical reaction results in the destruction of the abnormal skin cells and leaves the surrounding healthy skin completely unharmed.

The treatment involves simply attending an appointment where the skin is prepared and the cream applied, you can then go away for a period of 2 hours and let the areas be exposed to daylight, go shopping or have a walk in the park. After the 2 hours the cream is removed and the skin must then be protected by either high factor sun cream or a hat. There may be mild redness and tingling and a little scaling, but this indicates that the treatment has worked, a totally different sensation compared to the intense pulsed light.

Dr Sandra Minor, Consultant Dermatologist at Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital, has been using the PDT treatment as an option for sun damaged skin since 2002, now believes this is a far superior alternative to the current standard AK treatment. She says “this is a new exciting way of delivering PDT, which will benefit patients by a one off treatment with minimal discomfort and downtime. Large field areas can be treated in one visit and it is very effective just like a walk in the park.”

Top accolade for Sean's uni work WORKING on major projects for the University of Chichester has earned a former student a top award.

Alumni and now employee Sean MacEnri was presented with the emerging talent accolade from the Association of University Directors of Estates by entertainer Gyles Brandeth.

THe award celebrates members of staff who make an exceptional contribution to the facilities sector and show great potential.

Among the projects Sean has been working on is the £35m engineering and digital technology park on the Bognor Regis campus.

A RECORD turnout has helped to ensure Bognor Regis beach sparkles in the spring sunshine.

Between 30 and 40 volunteers of all ages took part in a litter pick along the foreshore. THe community event was held by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and was combined with Bognor Regis In Bloom's delayed annual spring clean.

Last THursday's session between the bandstand and the pier saw nine bags each filled with some 60 litres of rubbish in just over an hour.

One of the helpers who took part was Bognor Regis resident Bob Jackson, 73.

He said: "It's important to do this for the benefit of everybody. THe cleaner the beach, the more people will come here.

"If visitors see an unclean beach, they won't come back."

The Sweet Taste of Summer Spring is finally here and it’s time to start thinking about planting for the summer – and perhaps even giving fruit growing a go!

Of all the popular summer fruits, strawberries are one of the easiest to grow in containers and you can grow them on a patio, balcony, windowsill or even in a hanging basket.

Strawberries are compact plants, so even gardeners with limited space can have a few pots on the go positioned close to the kitchen or outdoor seating area for convenience. By growing them in pots you can provide strawberries with the perfect conditions – rich, fertile, well

draining soil in a sunny position and as they are growing off the ground they are less likely to suffer from disease or damage by pests.

There are two types of strawberries you can go for – Summer-fruiting varieties or perpetual strawberries. Summerfruiting are the largest and most popular.

They have a short by heavy cropping period over two to three weeks any time from early to mid-summer. Perpetual strawberries produce smaller crops of fruits from early summer to early autumn. The crops are not as heavy as the summer-fruiting ones and the fruits are smaller in size.

You can grow strawberries in a variety of different containers, but the advantage of growing them in a strawberry planter – an urn shaped pot with pocket holes down the side – is that they look attractive, a good sized pot holds a fair number of plants and they produce the highest yield. You will need one plant per side opening and three or four for the top (if you are growing strawberries in an ordinary container then just three or four plants will do). Fill the bottom of the pot with compost that contains a slow release fertiliser and continue to fill the container as you plug each hole with a strawberry plant, lightly patting the plant into the soil as you fill. Finish off your strawberry planter with the three to four plants on top.

Make sure your containers get at least six to eight hours of sun so that you will get plenty of flowers and fruits and if the sunlight is coming from only one direction, rotate the container every three to four days if possible. Water your strawberries whenever the soil feels dry about an inch below the surface, and when there are long periods of hot, dry weather you may need to water daily.

If pots and containers are just part of your outside space then here are some gardening tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) • Tie back climbing and rambling roses • Keep an eye out for pests and keep weeds under control • Start feeding plants in the garden from now to the end of the summer • Sow seeds directly into the soil so they can flower in the summer • Sow vegetable seeds directly into prepared beds • Plant summer flowering bulbs • Sow new lawns or repair bare patches • Prune shrubs and trees • Apply mulch or manure to flower beds and pots • Prepare hanging baskets

Grapefruit is great fruit for tackling unsightly cellulite AS SOON as the sun's out, and we start wearing less clothing, we are exposing parts of our bodies that perhaps haven’t been seen for a while. THen there is the worry of being beach ready? Bikinis? Shorts?

Does the very thought fill you with dread? Are you worried about how much cellulite you have?

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the appearance of lumpy or dimpled 'cottage cheese skin', which predominantly develops with age on the legs, bottom, stomach and back of the arms. Basically, when you have globules of fat under the skin pushing up against the connective tissue, you have this uneven, 'mottled' skin appearance. THe reason adults develop areas of loose skin and cellulite is because of uneven texture of fatty deposits beneath the skin.

THis condition is more common in women than men, with about 80 per cent of women having some measure of cellulite, particularly as they age and the skin loses its elasticity. However, anyone can develop cellulite, even teenagers dealing with

weight and hormonal changes.

As a skin condition, cellulite is not serious or harmful, and therefore many choose to just simply leave their cellulite alone. Meanwhile, others are very bothered by the appearance of cellulite, especially following life circumstances such as weight gain/loss or pregnancy.

Several primary factors contribute to the development of cellulite, including: • Poor diet • Fluid retention, which also causes bloating • Dehydration • Lack of circulation or blood flow • Weak collagen structure of the skin • Being overweight or having increased body fat • Hormonal changes • Lack of physical activity Some other factors that can cause skin changes such as cellulite, sagginess, wrinkles and formation of dark spots include: hormonal imbalances, high amounts of stress, existing medical conditions like autoimmune disease or diabetes, genetics, poor diet, too much alcohol, allergies, smoking, too much sun exposure and other causes of toxicity.

THings like stress and a poor diet also cause your body to slow down production of collagen, which is crucial to keep skin looking young.

I have been looking into simple and inexpensive ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite and grapefruit aromatherapy oil is a great one to try.

Did you know that the scent of the oil of grapefruit alone can stimulate the burning of fat?

Also, because it contains citral and citronellal, the oil has astringent qualities as well. Vitamin C is a great astringent agent. THis means that it can shrink the pores and tighten the skin, making it look firmer.

It also helps the lymphatic system to work properly.

THis lymphatic system is a big part of the circulatory system and pink grapefruit essential oil can stimulate and activate both.

THis effect will result in a better blood circulation that will deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the epidermis. It will help it regenerate and replenish.

THe lymph’s role (a fluid full of white blood cells) is to travel by blood and fight off infections.

THe body is assailed by toxins every day. A strong immune system will be able to protect the body against their harmful effects. Grapefruit oil can strengthen the immune system and can drain the toxins out.

It can stimulate the sweat glands and force harmful chemicals out of the body, which is a major part of getting rid of cellulite.

THe oil can also control any excessive water retention, which in time will add to the circumference of the thighs and waist.

THis means that the oil is effective in decreasing subcutaneous fat (cellulite). It also improves the aspect/appearance of the skin. THe most effective method is by far via daily massages. THe oil must be

steam distilled to avoid photo-toxicity and it must be diluted in a proper carrier oil. One such carrier, recommended in treating cellulite and stretch marks, is avocado. Simply massage into the affected areas daily as vigorously as you can.

For body blends, you could make a concentrated serum. THat would imply the use of about 20–30 drops of grapefruit essential oil per 30 ml carrier oil.

It’s simple and effective, so why not give it a try!

RETURNING to one of my favourite haunts where three counties virtually meet and it was indeed during my sojourn in Lyme Regis that I made a serendipitous discovery as I descended Broad Street - namely that of a bookworm's paradise nestling in centre of the town Lyme in the form of the Sanctuary Bookshop run by avid book enthusiast Bob Speer.

THis seemingly endless curiosity shop hosts a cornucopia of the written word in all formats with ten separate book areas and one splendid reading room equipped with fine settees and musical instruments dotted all over the place.

Dorset and Devon are also growing in reputation in terms of sparkling wines, so

I availed myself of a 2015 Dalwood Brut - produced in the picturesque Devon village on just three acres of hillside as a hobby business by David Dower and a group of friends and was able to note the good bubbles, interesting combination of the Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes and the delicate hints of the orchard and undoubtedly one of the best in the area!

Venturing home , it seemed opportune to stop at Aldi, Chichester, in search of good-value wines. A good starting point is its Exquisite Collection which is generally synonymous with quality.

I opted for a 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie and observed a slight spritz with a good lemon and green apple flavoured tang and, for an outlay of £5.69, a pleasant wine and one to accompany shellfish.

In the same range, was a 2017 Clare Valley Australian Riesling for £6.99 sporting a lemon and lime nose and exuding peach and tangerine flavours culminating in a good dry mineral finish - a wine worthy of your consideration!

At the same price, the 2017 Gavi Del Commune Di Gavi proved to be a great spring tipple and whose fresh acidity held together honeydew melon, apple

and subtle hazelnut flavours to form a well rounded wine.

Two reds stood out côté good bang for your buck beginning with a 2016 Animus Douro priced at a miserly £4.99 being of Portuguese provenance and made from port grapes.

THis gem is pleasingly smooth and

fruity and totally belies its pecuniary worth. Soft and rond en bouche, it has rich black fruit to the fore and a hint of spice and is one to grab at this low price!

My final selection was that of a 2015 80 Acres Cabernet Shiraz Merlot priced at £5.69 from carbon neutral producers, namely the Taylor family from South

Australia.

THis wine is medium-bodied with a fragrant nose, is both smooth and well balanced with a touch of vanilla spice, has soft tannins and luscious red berries and blackcurrant to regale your palate an Australian delight!

Community News & Views A MENTAL health charity is appealing for volunteers in Bognor Regis and Chichester to help at its Saturday club.

Coastal West Sussex Mind needs support at its respite services for older people with mild to moderate dementia, confusion or memory loss, which enables their carer to have a break.

Bognor Regis area manager Jo Bulis said: "We desperately need a couple of volunteers to join us at the Chestnuts Day Centre in Bognor Regis and at the Judith Adams Centre in Chichester.

"Partners of those with dementia really need a break from caring to look after their own health and well-being.

"When they know their loved ones are enjoying being at our clubs, they can relax and have some desperately-needed respite. Our volunteers are a vital part of making this possible.

"THese roles could be a good opportunity for those looking to use or develop skills around working with people with dementia but could equally suit retired people who have some time to spare on this rewarding work."

Rayner Waszkiewicz, area manager for Chichester, said: "Tasks will include setting up activities and clearing away, welcoming and chatting with people attending the club, helping them to take part in activities and preparing and serving meals and refreshments.

"A calm, patient manner would be beneficial and, as the days are great fun, a sense of humour is important.

"Volunteers are needed for most of the day on a Saturday but, if you only have a few hours, or can only do alternate weekends, for example, we would still like to hear from you."

FILM-MAKERS from around the county will be gathering in Chichester this Sunday.

THey will be watching entries from amateur film clubs in the latest Albany Film Competition.

THe event is being hosted by Chichester Film and Video Makers in recognition of its winning entry last year.

Alan Hepburn, the club's competition secretary, said: "THis year, there are six films entered in the competition from four clubs. THese films - based on the theme Elephant in the Room will be shown and judged on the day."

THe competition is being held at THe Newell Centre in Tozer Way. Doors will open at 2pm, with a welcome and introduction at 2.30pm. Entries will begin to be screened ten minutes later.

"THe total running time of the films, including time for the judges' deliberations, will be under two hours so, at approximately 4.30pm, there will be an interval during which refreshments will be available and the judges reach their verdicts," said Mr Hepburn.

It is expected the judges will announce their comments about 5pm. THese will be followed by the results and the presentation of the awards.

THe cost of entry will be £7 to include a cream tea. A raffle will also be drawn during the refreshment interval.

"Anyone interested in amateur films film-making is welcome to attend and experience the skill, imagination and expertise shown in the making of these films," Mr Hepburn added.

Chichester Film and Video Makers meets every other Wednesday, from September to May, in St Pancras church hall, St Pancras, in Chichester.

Its next meeting is at 7.30pm next Wednesday. Entry and a cup of tea is free.

A TEAM of 33 employees from a Chichester company will be stepping out in memory of a loyal colleague.

Kev Starling, pictured above, passed away in January after he had worked at Covers Timber and Builders Merchants in Chichester for more than 40 years.

He lost his battle with cancer while he was being cared for at St Wilfrid's Hospice after he had been diagnosed with the condition last November.

THe team at Covers will be taking part in next month's Moonlight Walk in aid of the hospice.

THey will tackle the five mile overnight walk through Chichester in a bid to raise at least £1,000 for the hospice.

THis year marks the tenth anniversary of the Moonlight Walk on May 5.

To celebrate, the hospice hopes 1,000 walkers register and raise £100,000 for its work.

Sir, As the stretch of the A27 westbound from Chichester to Havant is now in such an appalling condition would it be advisable to replace the single uneven road surface warning sign with several signs warning of short sections of flat road?

I do pity any unwary motorcyclists having to cope with the reluctance of the highways people to make any remedial work possible.

I can only imagine the intention is to wait until all of the Tarmac is worn away to return to the original concrete road surface. What a pity that the many billions of pounds siphoned off of road users cannot be used, in part to make things safer.

Demolished churches were town landmarks Residents were unhappy when the last St John's Church was knocked down ONE OF the facts I have always found quite amazing is the number of churches and church premises that there have been around the area over the years.

THis week, therefore, I thought we would take a look at another two of them. We have had two St John’s churches in the town. Sadly, neither is still in existence.

THe earliest church built in 1821 was situated near to the seafront between the Steyne and Market Street, and named St John’s. However, by 1829, it had been sold to a trust. Its distinctive Gothic tower was added in 1833 complete with a clock.

However, strange as it may seem, by 1876 the church was deemed to be too small and so it was closed. THere was a public meeting in 1879 to discuss a possible new church in the town.

THere was an available site in London Road, which was eventually chosen.

It was not until 1960 that the clock tower in Market Street was finally demolished, taking away an important landmark in the town, one that had been used by the fishermen for a number of years.

On August 25, 1880, Lady Cecilia Bingham, who was the youngest sister of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, laid the foundation stone for the new St John’s. Similar to today, a number of fundraising events were held, and

subscriptions were received which totalled £2,000 to allow for building works to the chancel, transepts and vestry. THe spire was built at a later date when funds allowed.

By August, 1882, St John’s was ready for use, but because the church was still in debt it was not possible for it to be consecrated until 1885 when the debts had been cleared. In January, 1886, the Bishop of Chichester conducted the service of consecration.

It would appear to have been a very spacious church with seating estimated to be available for 900 people, this at a time when the population of the entire parish of South Bersted only amounted to 1,195.

It must have been a very imposing and impressive structure. From some of the reports and information detailed in a small publication at the time, it would appear to have been a real community church, with many donations being received either in kind or cash to ensure that the church had everything needed for such an important building. However, because of the continuing lack of money the spire was not constructed until 1895.

Finally, the town had its own completed church to be used for the benefit of all. It should be remembered that at this time London Road was more of a residential area than it is today.

decline of congregations and the costs involved in maintaining these magnificent buildings, St John’s ultimately closed. Following the closure in 1975, it was finally demolished.

Boots had new premises built on the site and still occupies this prime site, though WH Smith, the other original occupant, has moved to the other side of London Road. THere was always a right of way between Sudley Road and London Road, and it is for this reason that the doors in Boots are situated where they are, at opposite ends of the shop.

I hope these photographs evoke memories similar to those told to me over the years.

THis church holds many a happy memory for Bognorians everywhere. Its closure removed an even more prominent landmark from the town.

At the northern end of Sudley Road, which was at the rear of this magnificent church, the old vicarage associated with the church (now demolished) was apparently haunted by a variety of spectres. A curse was supposed to have been placed on this building after the then vicar tried to put a stop to local smuggling.

Footsteps were often heard upstairs and dragging over the floor when no-one was there along with slamming doors, rattling windows, and sightings of an apparition. Although the vicarage has now gone, sounds of digging are alleged to be heard in the old garden area up to this day and the area (which now has shops built on top) is said to be unlucky.

It is interesting to note that in the 1960s the local press reported the church had been neglected since it had been built and to bring it up to standard would have meant that a total of £30,000 was required, which would include a

new organ and a boiler house.

THe last service was held in St John’s in July, 1971, when the value of the site was estimated at between £200,000 and £250,000. At the last Communion held in the church, only 70 people took part. THe date for the service was decided by the Bishop of Chichester, the Right Rev Dr Roger Wilson, following the signing by the Queen of the ‘order in Council declaring the redundancy’.

THe Vicar of Bognor Regis, at that time, the Rev Dr W. G. Sinclair Snow stated that the statutory waiting set down by the church commissioners had to leave the church empty for a period of 12 months to allow for another church or organisation to purchase the building. Only in the absence of a purchaser could the building be demolished.

Ultimately, in February, 1972, St John’s Church was demolished, much against the wishes of residents, who still regarded it with affection. However, it was a large church that could hold a congregation of more than 1,000, which was far in excess of the needs of that time. THe final entries in the register on June 27 were for the baptism of Sharon Gregory and the last marriage was between John Whitehead and Jane Edge, who were both members of the church choir.

Churches evoke memories for some people, for others it is the wonderment at the building of some of these incredible edifices, at a time when building methods were viewed as less able than today. For some readers, the information that there was ever a church in London Road will come as quite a surprise, for others it will hopefully bring back happy memories.

Day in the life of Support Worker

Any help to cover even one of these slots would be most appreciated, even if it is just 1 morning or afternoon a week. Duties would include making a big pot of Tea, some instant coffee in flask dispensers, some glasses of orange squash and helping to serve them to clients. Also

putting returned cups in the dish washer afterwards. No experience necessary as friendly staff will be on hand to show you what to do.

Bus Driver or Escort – Midhurst Community Bus Association The Midhurst Community Bus operates scheduled services in and around Midhurst that anyone can use. The Community Bus continues to provide cheap accessible transport to the Midhurst community, plus the communities of Easebroune, Lodsworth and Trotton, to enable passengers of all ages to shop, visit the surgery, library, post office etc. Drivers and escorts are needed on a voluntary basis to help maintain this established and valuable service. The service operates to a timetable on 4 days/mornings per week. Everyone is very friendly and co-operative, committed and loyal. The bus is also available for private hire as long as the 4-day service is carried out. The private hire drivers are remunerated.

Blues looking to finish season of PostSport contrasts on a high with away win CHICHESTER RFC will be hoping to finish their campaign on a high by chalking up their third win on the bounce.

It's been a season of ups and downs for Scott Ashley's side.

It started with hopes of a promotion push with the Oaklands Park faithful full of hope they could seal a swift return to National League rugby.

But a poor run around the New Year when the side were hit badly by injuries saw Chi lose ground on their top-of-the-table rivals and condemned them to another year in London One South.

On the plus side of things, the first XV have shown they have real depth, with a number of promising youngsters making their debuts this term.

And, when it came down to it, Chi have put in the performances - such as losing just once in their past six matches - which has sealed fourth spot in a very competitive division.

Ashley's side registered their second win in a row last weekend when they beat relegationthreatened Old Colfeians 37-34 in the last home game of the year.

THey end the season tomorrow with a trip to

Sevenoaks (2pm).

Travelling Chi fans will want to see more of the belief that the team showed last weekend in that bonus point win.

After falling 13-10 behind in a frenetic opening period, Jack Hamilton-Fox made the most of an overlap to dot down in Vultures Corner and put Blues in front.

THe visitors hit back almost immediately.

But a clever offload from Jack Arden-Brown created space for Aaron Davies to run through and score under the posts, giving Chi a 20-17 lead at the turnaround.

Playing down the slope, Chichester took the attack to the opposition.

Seven minutes after the restart, Old Colfeians were reduced to 14 men. Chris Johnson took advantage, surging over for the Blues' third try of the afternoon. But the visitors, who are fighting for the lives at the bottom of London One South, kept on battling and tied things up after two quick-fire scores.

Chi hit back. After some sustained pressure, Josh Goodwin fed Charlie Wallace to dive over for Chichester’s fourth try. THe visitors did manage one more try but it was not enough to prevent Blues from winning the match.

DARTS: THe Legends showed their true credentials by sweeping all categories in the Bognor Tuesday Double In Double Out darts league.

THe team were crowned singles, doubles and division one winners at the trophy presentation evening at the Newtown Social Club while QE2 took the runners up spots in all three competitions.

In division two, Hunston Club did a clean sweep with Chichester Snooker Club the overall runners up.

THe presentation evening also saw 44 players take part in the blind pairs knockout competition.

Pitching players from different clubs together, it is a friendly competition in name only.

After some strong play, the first semifinal saw Cliff Prior (QE2) & Andy Cooper (Cabin Cruisers) win 2-0 over Jack Danahar (QE2) & Dave Owens (Hoffmeisters). Cooper also managed a 120 in-shot during this game.

BOGNOR youngster Izzy Hauxwell showed she can compete with the country's best after stealing a bronze medal in the English Championship trampolining qualifiers.

THe Regis School pupil headed to Gillingham as part of the ever-improving cohort from the Dragonflyers Club.

Under the pressure of competing against some of the best young jumpers in the south east, Izzy produced two incredible ten bounce routines of immense power under extreme control to final in the 15/16 yrs event.

THe display included a voluntary routine of 7.4 difficulty which contained 13 somersaults in a ten bounce routine which the judges deemed to be executed superbly.

THis third place and fantastic score ranks Izzy fourth in England in her category.

With only one qualifier in Telford left, club coaches say that Hauxwell is well on her way to securing a place at the prestigious English championships later this year.

Coach Linda O'Leary said it would be "a sensational achievement".

Following the event, team mates Sofija Kalnicenko are ranked ninth and Libby Morton 19th in their own respective divisions.

O'Leary said: "THese performances are a tremendous achievement against England's elite trampoline clubs with this, their first year at this relatively new event.

"Flyers have now proven themselves across all national competition against every elite trampoline club having reached finals for many years on the UK national scene at national development, league and schools."

Dragonflyers hold sessions at THe Regis School for varying abilities throughout the week.

THe club, which is open to people of all ages, is now offering recreational sessions for those that want to give the sport a try.

Pennells hit a 180 in their winning first leg, but Ragless & Palmer took the next two legs with Palmer hitting the bullseye to finish a leg.

THe final saw Prior hit the bull to start, following it up with a 130 in-shot.

Despite reaching the double first, Prior and Cooper missed a chance to win the leg repeatedly. Ragless & Palmer caught up but could not take advantage - leaving Prior to hit double 4 to take the first leg.

THe second leg saw Palmer hit double 1 to start, and Ragless hit a 140. With their opponents struggling. Palmer hit double top for a 54 out-shot and the second leg.

THe third leg saw Cooper get the first in-shot and, after some strong scoring from both pairs, Cooper hit the shot to take the leg.

Leg four saw Palmer get the in-shot, while Ragless hit a ton and 123. Cooper & Prior caught up, though, with scores of 70, 95, 80, 100 & 100, but it wasn't in time, as Ragless hit double 10 to take it all the way.

THe decider saw Prior & Cooper start well. THey kept up the pressure, with Prior hitting a ton and a 140.

On his next throw he hit double top for the win, making himself and Cooper the Blind Pairs Champions, and taking home ÂŁ90 between them.

THe Purple and Greens defeated Overton 33-12 on the road to seal a bonus point win and clinch second spot in Hampshire One. It caps an excellent season for Bognor, who finished just five points behind United Services Portsmouth, who lost just once all season in winning the crown.

Last weekend's performance encapsulated the Purple and Greens' season. THey started strongly, when Paddy Burnett scored straight from the kick off.

Two further scores from centre Sam Newcombe put Bognor into a 19-0 half time lead. Newcombe completed his hat-trick in the second period with Josh Riggall also crossing to round off the win.

Pagham's promotion push put on hold after defeat at leaders

Title beyond Chi after loss CHICHESTER City's title hopes are now a distant dream despite springing a surprise win over a top-of-the-table rival.

With just three games of the SCFL Premier season to go, Miles Rutherford's side sit fourth, 13 points off league leaders Haywards Heath with two games in hand.

THings could have been so much better for Chi, but they suffered a shock 2-1 loss to Hassocks at Oaklands Park last weekend.

City made amends on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory against second-place THree Bridges.

But even with those three points, Chi's form has failed them when it matters most and they are mathematically unable to overhaul the leaders.

All is not lost for Rutherford's side as they still remain in the hunt for a promotion place to the Isthmian South for next season With a trip to strugglers Eastbourne United tomorrow (3pm), followed by a home clash against Newhaven on Tuesday (7.45pm), Chi know they could still sneak into second spot if results go their way.

But, after the Hassocks defeat made it two losses in a row, they can afford no slipups as the season ends.

Chi never got going in the match last weekend against a Robins side who are battling against the drop.

After a quiet first half, it was the visitors who took the lead through Michael Death on the hour mark.

Hassocks doubled their lead ten minutes later when George Galbraith-Gibbons bundled home a second.

Chi did hit back through Scott Jones shortly after, making it 23 in the league for him this term. But, even with five attackers on the pitch in the final ten minutes, they were unable to find a way past the Hassocks defence.

THings improved on Tuesday when early strikes from Dan Hutchings (2) and Jones fired them into a lead which they never looked like relinquishing.

John Lansdale pulled one back for the visitors with ten minutes to play but Chi held on to seal the win.

Regardless, Bridges are eight points clear of City so it would take something remarkable for the tables to turn.

PAGHAM are being urged to keep on fighting until the end of the season - despite a 3-0 loss to the league leaders leaving them adrift in the hunt for the SCFL crown.

A run of 15 league games unbeaten had seen the Lions go into the final month of the season within touching distance of the top of the table.

But Pagham lost out on the chance to leapfrog over leaders Haywards Heath when the top team inflicted a 3-0 defeat on them last weekend.

by Tom Simmonds and Richie Hellen four points off the pace with just three matches of the season to go.

With THree Bridges flying in second, even a place in the promotion places looks to be out of the Nyetimber Lane side's grasp.

But there is still a chance of silverware with a local derby against Chichester City lined up for May 2 at Lancing's Culver Road in the final of the RUR Charity Cup. Before then, Pagham welcome Eastbourne Town to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm) looking for a win to keep on the pressure on the sides above them.

Sids want return to senior level Ne

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce says the club still has its sights on promotion back to senior football - in spite of a lack of FA clear guidelines on how the system will work this season.

With just three weeks of the season to go, the Sids sit fourth in the SCFL Division Two. Even with six games to squeeze in between now and the first week of May, a gap of eight points to leaders Rustington means a tilt at the title now appears beyond them.

But Pearce's charges can still seal second and with a trip to third-placed Roffey coming

up tomorrow (3pm), a Sids win would put them level on points with Alfold in second.

THe task will not be an easy one. Just four points separate second and sixth in the 14 team division. Even if Sids do seal the runners up spot, Pearce says 'nothing is set in concrete that second would seal a return to step six of the non-league pyramid.

He said: "It all depends on the FA restructuring. THe ground has been passed for step six so everything is in place so it's over to the FA and powers that be.

"To be sure we are aiming for the top two.

"THere are not many other clubs in the division that are ready to go up.

"As a club you always want to progress and we don't want players that don't want to move forward. We all want to progress, that's why everyone is involved.

"THere is a cost always involved but if it's available it's important that we take it and then see where it gets us."

Sids took a big step towards possible promotion with a 4-0 victory over sixth-placed Westfield last weekend. Callum Dowdell, Tom Bayley and a brace from Dan Bassil sealed the win for the Recreation Ground side.

Pearce's team were also in action last night when they played Rustington in the semifinal of the league two cup at Nyetimber Lane.

THe winners will face Bosham, who beat Cowfold on Tuesday in the other semi-final 2-1 thanks to goals from Graeme Dowden and Grant Radmore. THe Robins are level on points with Sids after making it eight wins on the bounce in all competitions away at Roffey.

A goal in each half from Callum Coker sealed the 2-0 win for the defending champions.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey will look to end their season on a high with consecutive away days at Billingshurst tomorrow (3pm) and at Wick on Tuesday (7.45pm).

THe Blues recorded their first win in eight when they beat St Francis Rangers 3-1 last weekend. THat was followed up with a 2-2 draw against Midhurst on Tuesday.

No place like home for Chi Ladies run-in CHICHESTER City Ladies will be looking to bounce back to winning ways as they round off the season with five home games on the spin.

Matt Wright's side have shown they are more than up to the challenge of life in the third tier of the women's game, currently sitting eighth in the 12-team FA Premier League South.

Chi still have games in hand on those around them. And they start their run-in with a home match against bottom side Swindon Town Ladies at Oaklands Park on Sunday (2pm).

After suffering a 3-1 reverse at Coventry United Ladies last time out, City will be out to put in a strong performance in front of their home crowd.

Ali Hall was the star for United, hitting a hat-trick while Chi had only Jade Widdow’s volleyed effort to celebrate.

Speaking after the defeat, Wright said: "Coventry just gave a bit of quality in areas that we didn’t, and they deserved the win.

"However, we don’t look at this as unsurpassable. When they come down to us, we’ll give them a good game.

“Personally, I’ll reflect on the fact that I set the team up wrong as the first two goals I’ll take responsibility for not organising the players correctly.

“We all make mistakes, players and managers and I made a big one. If it hadn’t had been for that I think we would have been defensively stronger."

Relegated Rocks set to change coaching team for next season Next Game

OXFORD CITY (A) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has vowed there will be changes in the Rocks' dugout next season - although he failed to confirm if that would mean him stepping down as manager.

After weeks of fighting the inevitable, Bognor's relegation from National South was confirmed after a 3-2 defeat to Hemel Hempstead last week.

With just three games to go, the Nyewood Lane side are 13 points adrift and sit rock bottom at the foot of the table.

THe immediate focus turns to picking up points in the next week against Oxford City away tomorrow (3pm) and at home versus inform Chelmsford City on Tuesday (7.45pm).

But all the talk on the terrace will be on what will happen at the club next season when Bognor make an immediate return to the Isthmian Premier. With relegation confirmed, the Post asked Pearce if he would be stepping down from the manager's role.

He said: "I don't know. I will be talking to the players but you could say that if the vast majority re-sign then they have not got a problem with me or the club.

"One thing is certain - we will be looking to increase the management team in the summer."

THe Rocks' relegation was confirmed after that home loss to Hemel. Two early goals for the visitors made things difficult for Pearce's side. A third followed with 20 minutes to

go. Late strikes from Ollie Pearce and Justin Amaluzor gave Bognor hope. But they were unable to find the equaliser.

THe odd goal was the difference on Tuesday evening too when Rocks lost 2-1 at Concord Rangers, Ibra Sekajja bagging a consolation.

Pearce said: "As a club we are very disappointed that we have not been able to stay at step two of the game.

"But I cannot complain about the efforts of the main group of players who, from a managing and coaching point of view, have been excellent.

"On Tuesday some of the football was exceptional. Some of the intricate passing was far above this level of the game, but unfortunately once again we lost.

"I feel for them as there's nothing worse than being part of a relegation team but they can hold their own heads high."

So what chance then of the Rocks picking up points to round off the season and avoid finishing bottom?

Pearce said: "I would like to do that but there are three in-form teams in the league and we're playing two of them at home in the last week of the season. One of them [Dartford] is going for the title and the other is going for the playoffs [Chelmsford].

"If the lads put in the effort they put in last night they have a good chance of giving those sides a little bit of a fright."

Rocks to start rebuilding work IT'S BEEN coming for weeks. But the inevitable was finally confirmed on Saturday when the 3-2 defeat at home to Hemel Hempstead confirmed the Rocks' relegation back to the Isthmian Premier.

It was always going to be a tough task for Jack Pearce's side.

With one of the smallest budgets in National South, Bognor were up against it from day one in their bid to stay in the second tier of nonleague football.

Saturday's loss in some ways summed up the season. Not much difference on the whole, but when it came down to it, Bognor were lacking at both ends of the pitch.

Now with relegation confirmed, the time is to start thinking about next year.

A number of players, particularly those on loan, will not be with the club next season.

Instead, the Rocks will look to rebuild and recruit locally, creating a nucleus of a side which will puts the team before the individual.

THere's also another big question and that's around the manager. Pearce made clear his return to the dugout would never be a longterm fix. He will now be thinking hard on who comes in to the management team, with a young and hungry face the likely addition.

AFTER weeks of anticipation, the loss last Saturday against Hemel confirmed the relegation.

We all sort of knew it was around the corner And while there was some false hope when we beat St Albans, all the lads knew it was coming, which means our approach has been to let the shackles come off and give the fans something to cheer.

THe key thing about the St Albans match is that we got our noses in front meaning we had something to defend and fight for.

Whenever you go 2-0 up though, the natural instinct is to sit back and defend.

We did OK up until the last 20 minutes when they got on top.

THen we conceded a goal and the penalty which very nearly ended up costing us.

In other games we have conceded very early on and when that happens it feels like it resonates that we will lose.

We saw that lack of resilience on Saturday. It was a very disappointing match but you simply cannot atone for individual mistakes.

It seems like something that has happened every week for us but, after two or three errors before you know it, the game is over.

Tuesday's trip to Concord to play a team who are just above the relegation zone showed that there is not much between us and them.

THe big difference is that we have been in a rut for most of the year but there is no gulf at all between the two sides.

Given that we have beaten sides who are in the play-offs this season, it's proof that anyone can beat anyone in this league.

Before the Hemel match there was a nice moment on the pitch when I posed for a picture with one of the mascots for the day.

I've not played for a little while because of the shoulder injury so it's nice that people are still aware I am involved in

the club.

As for the injury, my recovery is going well after surgery.

I've had six sessions of physio and now on to weight- bearing stuff. It's good to be out of the sling and I'm allowed to run again, albeit at 3/4 speed. It's been quite nice to have the movement of my arm back and get the ball at my feet again.

Naturally, as I've not been playing you do think what would have happened if we have had everyone fit and Jack had got in someone to score goals.

But that is immaterial really and, while I do think that things may have been different and we could have picked up a few extra points here and there, looking ahead to next year I think carrying that feeling over is a bad place to be.

As for next season, we've started talking about it as players and I'd say 90 per cent of the lads are keen to stay and ply their trade in the league below.

I think one of the biggest issues is what happens around the manager role.

THe general view is that we want someone at the helm who is in place early so that

by June time they are here and the team has someone to kick us on a bit.

Before that, we have three games left. Out of those matches, we could get nine points or we could get none.

THe fact is that we're down and we're playing sides who have things to play for.

I do fancy us to get something against Chelmsford and away at Oxford. I think we could nick a point. As for Dartford, they will come to us on the last day of the season knowing they will probably have to win the match to win the league.

But if we get our noses in front then who knows what could happen.

Personally speaking, I think it would be good for local football if Havant & Waterlooville can win the title.
