Residents trapped in homes ELDERLY residents in North Bersted are trapped in their homes by a lack of buses, a councillor has claimed. Cllr Ann Rapnik said she had been unsuccessful in her bid to restore the Stagecoach service 61 through Stroud Green. She is seeking to arrange a replacement through Sammy Community Transport if the demand exists among her neighbours on the estate. But this alternative would not operate

even at the two-hourly frequency the 61 buses ran during their final years. Cllr Rapnik said: “A lot of people around Stroud Green have been trapped in their own homes. I think the situation is appalling because we are an estate half of bungalows and half of houses. “Most of those bungalows contain elderly people and they have been shot in the foot by what has happened. “The nearest shops from here are those

in North Bersted and they are a quarter of a mile from what was our bus stop. It’s a long way if you are elderly.” As reported, Stagecoach axed the Stroud Green portion of the 61 service in early January as part of a series of cutbacks in its routes around the Bognor Regis area. Residents told the Bognor Regis Post they feared becoming isolated by the withdrawal of the minibus which ran in a loop between the town centre and Rose

Green. The reduced route stops in West Meads Drive at its nearest point to Stroud Green but only for three journeys daily MondaySaturday. Cllr Rapnik, an Arun district councillor for Bersted, has spent the past three months working hard to get the previous service restored. But her efforts with Stagecoach, West Turn to page five
