Residents trapped in homes ELDERLY residents in North Bersted are trapped in their homes by a lack of buses, a councillor has claimed.

Cllr Ann Rapnik said she had been unsuccessful in her bid to restore the Stagecoach service 61 through Stroud Green. She is seeking to arrange a replacement through Sammy Community Transport if the demand exists among her neighbours on the estate.

Cllr Rapnik said: “A lot of people around Stroud Green have been trapped in their own homes. I think the situation is appalling because we are an estate half of bungalows and half of houses.

“Most of those bungalows contain elderly people and they have been shot in the foot by what has happened.

“The nearest shops from here are those

in North Bersted and they are a quarter of a mile from what was our bus stop. It’s a long way if you are elderly.”

As reported, Stagecoach axed the Stroud Green portion of the 61 service in early January as part of a series of cutbacks in its routes around the Bognor Regis area.

Residents told the Bognor Regis Post they feared becoming isolated by the withdrawal of the minibus which ran in a loop between the town centre and Rose

Green.

The reduced route stops in West Meads Drive at its nearest point to Stroud Green but only for three journeys daily MondaySaturday.

Cllr Rapnik, an Arun district councillor for Bersted, has spent the past three months working hard to get the previous service restored.

Play areas boost from investment MORE than a quarter of a million pounds is to be spent improving play areas around Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council has committed to carry out the refurbishments of the three sites at Hotham Park, West Park and Hampshire Avenue with help from its partners.

Work is set to start soon to enable the improved areas to be open by early summer.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, Arun's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "It is exciting to see that these play areas are to be updated.

"The new designs will create exceptional play areas for all ages and abilities to enjoy. We hope that the upgraded play areas will continue to attract large numbers of visitors to our parks for many years to come."

Public consultations took place at the play areas to find out what their users would like to see included in them.

Hotham Park will have £63,000 spent on its play area - including £10,000 from Hotham Park Heritage Trust - to be refurbished on a like-for-like basis.

This will include the replacement of the most popular items, such as the large climbing frame with slide, the inclusive roundabout and the multi see-saw.

The play area will continue to provide a range of play equipment designed for children with disabilities.

A council spokesman said: "The design reflects the heritage of the park and aims to update the play area to provide

an impressive playground for a range of ages and abilities.

"In addition, improvements will be made to the safety surfacing to ensure the play area can be used all year round."

The refurbishment at West Park will cost £63,000, with £20,000 coming from Aldwick Parish Council. It will offer a woodland-themed play area with a wider range of equipment for children up to the age of 14.

The most popular play equipment choices were for a junior climbing unit with a large slide and an inclusive roundabout.

At Hampshire Avenue, the £57,000-worth of work will include toddler and junior climbing units, an informal kickabout area and outdoor exercise equipment.

Improvements to the surrounding recreation ground are planned for later in the year. These will feature seating areas and tree planting.

The landscaping will cost £46,000, with the money coming from a developer as a condition of the approval of its housing plans at the former Bognor Regis Community College site in Westloats Lane.

The play areas will be accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

The equipment has been designed for children of all capabilities.

The Arun spokeswoman thanked Hotham Park Heritage Trust and Aldwick Parish Council for their contributions to two of the projects.

SIX JOBS were created when a new bakery opened in Bognor Regis on Wednesday.

The outlet for Warrens Bakery was the first for the Cornish company on the south coast.

As reported, it is located in The Arcade in the High Street and has been opened in partnership with local businessman Lee Johnston.

It will showcase the artisan bakery's range of breads, pasties and sweet and savoury treats.

Warrens Bakery, founded in 1860, prides itself on being the oldest bakery in Cornwall and is recognised as the

world's oldest Cornish pasty maker.

Its chairman, Mark Sullivan, said: "We are thrilled to open in the historic town of Bognor Regis, the first of many new stores anticipated in the south coast area. We have been inundated with requests to open in West Sussex and the Home Counties.

"So it's great to arrive at last, bringing craft bakery and our award-winning products to local customers."

Cllr Phil Woodall, the town mayor of Bognor Regis, attended the opening.

He said: "This is what regeneration is all about and a sign we are moving in the right direction."

f Isabelle Cowens being coached by Kelly Smith ENGLAND football legend Kelly Smith has visited Bognor Regis to inspire the next generation.

Kelly is her country's all-record top goalscorer, with 46 goals and 117 caps, and has used her experience to devise a coaching programme for Butlin's in the town.

She led one of the sessions on Monday - with the Butlin's FA Level 2 qualified coaches she has trained - to put her ideas into action on the resort's outdoor all-weather pitch.

"It's all about having fun at the age of these kids. They are meeting new people on the courses and learning some new skills as well," she said.

"I was about seven when I started to play and I want to pass on to these kids what I was doing then.

"It's important to get children active

and this is a good way to do that."

The sole girl who took part in Monday afternoon's session, and wearing an England replica shirt, was Isabelle Cowens. The eight-year-old watched England women's goalless draw with Wales at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton last Friday.

She said: "I like playing football. I like that you can keep fit and that you use your feet rather than your hands.

"It's really exciting being here. I've learned some new skills today, like the best way to kick the ball with my foot.

"I like being a defender and tackling and playing in goal."

The courses - which also take place at the other Butlin's resorts in Minehead and Skegness - have proved popular since they began in February.

Kelly has devised four sessions split

into two groups: five to seven-year-olds and 8 to12-year-olds. Places are limited to 20 with two coaches a session to ensure those who take part benefit from a personalised session.

Kelly retired last year after her third spell with Arsenal Ladies at the end of her 20 year playing career and is working for her UEFA A licence to become a fully qualified coach.

She welcomes rise of England's women's team to second place in the international rankings.

"I think we have a real chance of winning the World Cup next year," she said. "I think the appointment of Phil Neville as the manager was a good one.

"There was a lot of negative comment about it but he is a winner and he has played under some of the best managers, like Sir Alex Ferguson."

PROPOSED new barriers at a Yapton level crossing will make the village school safer, a councillor has claimed.

Cllr Stephen Haymes said the safety work proposed by Network Rail would help if Yapton CoE Primary School was extended. He was among the Arun District Council committee members who agreed to outline plans for 70 homes on Stakers Farm next to the school on Wednesday.

Detailed talks with the developer, Granite Gate, education officials and the school’s headteacher has seen the company agree to provide enough land to enable the school to expand to a three-form entry.

Cllr Haymes (C, Yapton) told the committee on Wednesday making the level crossing – a few hundred metres north in North End Road – would help to allay concerns about traffic problems along the road.

“Network Rail are planning to spend £4m on the level crossing next year. On average, 3.7 people a day are running the red lights there.

“It is one of the quickest level crossings in the district and is closed from 59 seconds to two minutes 48 seconds. Once this work is done, the time is expected to be six to seven minutes closed.

“There will, therefore, be less traffic on this road once this news starts to get out. By the time, these houses are built, the traffic will have eased a bit,” he said.

The committee approved the proposals by 13 votes to nil, with one abstention. Its chairman, Cllr Ricky

Bower (C, East Preston), said he was pleased with the outcome of the deferral by councillors of the plan three months ago to allow talks about the school’s expansion to take place.

“There seems to have been some good sense at the end of the day as far as this particular site is concerned.

“The reservation of the land for future expansion has to be welcomed in my mind.”

But he said any potential work on the school would need a separate application.

“We are not giving permission for the expansion of the school. That’s another matter that will come up at some point in the future, probably with the county council. But at least the land is there for the school to expand if it’s considered necessary,” he said.

Planning officer Simon Davis said Granite Gate had created more land for the school – from the original 1,450sq m to 3,500sq m by re-arranging the housing layout, changing the mix of homes and cutting the amount of proposed public open space in the scheme by 325sq m to 3,625sq m.

Education officers at the county council had assessed the new area for a bigger school and said it complied with their requirements, he added.

Network Rail is holding a public meeting from 7pm-8pm on April 24 at Yapton Village Hall to talk about its work to replace automatic half-barriers at the crossing with CCTV-controlled full barriers. It is used by 8,000 vehicles and 300 trains every weekday.

` Meeting idea for new park snubbed A REQUEST for a meeting about a proposed new park in Bognor Regis has been rejected.

Bognor Regis Town Council asked for the public session on the Hothamton linear park plans after a vote at its annual electors' meeting last month. But Arun District Council has rejected the prospect.

Town and district councillor Matt Stanley (LD, Marine) said he thought it was reasonable for residents to have the chance to shape the regeneration of this town.

"The more I look into this project and discuss it with residents, the clearer it becomes that no meaningful consultation has happened at all," he said. "Only 120 people attended the consultation event Arun held back in October. This clearly demonstrates the community simply is not engaged in this plan.

"All I keep hearing from Arun is the project has 'overwhelming' support. However, I have not seen any evidence to back up that claim."

The £3.5m linear park forms a major part of Arun's regeneration proposals for the town centre and will replace the Hothamton car park off Queensway.

An Arun spokeswoman said it had carried out consultation about the park's designs before councillors voted in March to go ahead.

"The council will now be preparing the final designs for the park in preparation for submitting a planning application.

"During this process, there will be further opportunities for the public to view the proposals and to make comment."

Seafront projects underway DEMOLITION work has started to enable new toilets to be installed on Bognor Regis seafront.

The former foreshore office is being knocked down to enable the infrastructure for the new loos on The Esplanade to be installed.

Information about the new toilet building is to be displayed on the safety fencing around the site which enables cyclists and pedestrians to continue to use the promenade.

The new toilet is being built offsite by its manufacturer and will be lifted into position on to a prepared base opposite

Walton Avenue.

Arun intends them to be available for use ahead of the main summer season.

In the meantime, any potential users of the loos will be directed to the toilets in the Regis Centre car park.

The foreshore services, as reported in the Post last month, will be moved to a position the other side of the bandstand.

Work has already started further west along the seafront on a new play area, pictured above. Its array of attractions can be seen starting to take shape at the site next to the popular Beach on the Beach sand play area. It is also expected

to be open before the summer season.

Cllr Phil Hitchins, the chairman of Arun's Bognor Regis regeneration subcommittee, said: "These two projects mark the start of our journey to deliver a new seafront experience for Bognor Regis.

"Both projects are top quality in their field and free to use. They have been designed to withstand the harsh marine location and a lot of use from our many seafront visitors."

Arun's cabinet member for technical services, Cllr Stephen Haymes, said: "It is really pleasing to see the major investment allocated for the

improvement of our public toilet provision turning into real change for the better. I look forward to seeing the toilets and play area open for our seafront visitors to use."

The district council has set aside £200,000 to pay for the new toilets.

Its original designs were rejected by councillors last September because of concerns from residents who live opposite to the fact the toilet doors opened facing their flats.

For the play area, a consultation by Arun last summer saw overwhelming support for the new facility.

Go-ahead for unisex toilets around town

Firm backing for the policy of replacing its current loos for men and women with gender neutral ones has been given by Arun District Council's senior members.

As reported, some district councillors have been unhappy with the installation of unisex loos. They claimed the decision should have been made by council members rather than officers.

But a report by the chief executive, Nigel Lynn, to the cabinet stated the provision of toilets had always been decided by officers as part of the regular maintenance and review of councilowned buildings.

"Most people will understand that what might have been acceptable language and behaviour as recently as the late 1990s would not be tolerated today," he stated.

"For the majority of the population born after 2000, the provision of selfcontained toilet cubicles is highly unlikely to be an issue."

He added this was shown by the 200,000 visits a year to self-contained toilet cubicles in Chichester city centre.

New beach huts NEW BLUE and yellow beach huts are in place along Felpham seafront.

The 30 huts next to the promenade are made of composite materials and designed to withstand the harsh marine environment.

Their cost to Arun District Council of about £135,000 was included in its capital replacement programme.

They have replaced the old huts, which were becoming increasingly dilapidated and would have been expensive to repair.

Cllr Stephen Haymes, the council's cabinet member for technical services, said the new beach huts were the same as those installed at Littlehampton.

Improve planters call A TOWN councillor has called for action to brighten up one of the key sites in Bognor Regis.

Cllr Jeanette Warr said she was disappointed in the continued unattractive appearance of the three large planters outside the town's railway station.

The location was one of the main gateways into the town centre and could be the first impression visitors to the town by train would see.

"The planters look so unappealing," said Cllr Mrs Warr, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Hotham ward. "They just appear to be dull and do not look like a good advertisement for our town.

"These planters have never looked good since they were created a few years back and nothing seems to be done to improve their appearance.

"To me, they are a waste of what is an important site for the town - and so much more could be done with them to benefit the town.

"It would be good to have brighter looking plants there for a start. It would cheer up the whole area and look nice for people to see when they arrive in the town.

"The main entrance to the station has become more important now that the entrance to Longford Road has been shut and there are only two ways in and out of the station."

The planters were created as part of a large public realm improvement scheme in the town centre. This was led by Arun District Council and cost £1.65m from the government's coastal communities fund.

The Station Square was the first phase of the work to be completed in 2016 to link with work in adjoining Station Road and a separate project along the London Road precinct.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "The sustainable planting was selected because it needs less water and less maintenance so, compared to traditional bedding, is more cost-effective and reduces the negative impact on the environment."

Arun was aware of the complaint and had planted silver-stemmed roses and dogwood to add colour in the winter. The arrival of spring would also see the sustainable planting turn green and start to flower to add vibrancy to the forecourt, she added.

"They're also designed to be in keeping with those already installed to minimise any negative impact to the local area.

"The work was essential as the timber beach huts were in very poor condition and required extensive repairs and complete redecoration, which was not financially viable.

"The current replacement project is the third phase of our budgeted replacement programme and the new style of beach hut has been extremely well-received by our customers and residents."

Those who use the huts were consulted about their replacements. In total, beach huts bring in £127,556 a year to Arun.

“Stagecoach told me they have to make a profit and they found it was not worth their while running the service around here,” she said.

“I was sure there was a responsibility on the county council for transport. I wanted to know what the criteria was for providing a bus route to a community like ours with 350 homes.

"But it turns out there is no criteria whatsoever. There is no justification for the council to provide transport.”

This has led Cllr Rapnik (UKIP) to consider Sammy to arrange regular journeys to Bognor Regis.

She has held initial talks with the charity and is following those up.

She has agreed to canvass opinion among her neighbours to find out the demand for the service.

Bersted Parish Council has also begun to consider hosting social occasions at its Jubilee Parish Hall, a short distance from Stroud Green, to provide a community event for isolated residents.

“There is a vague possibility the parish council might provide something for local people in the way of tea and coffee initially and, possibly, a lunch club.

“This is very much in the air and depends on funding like everything else,” she said. But she stressed the initiative would not rival the Laburnum Centre in Bognor Regis.

Former parish councillor Trevor Marshall has initially worked on the idea for a weekly lunch club.

He said: “As well as giving those who go along a balanced meal, the real idea is to fight loneliness and to stimulate the brain.”

Timely return of town clock CLOCK watchers in Bognor Regis town centre can again enjoy seeing one of their favourite sights.

An historic timepiece has been restored to its traditional position above the High Street.

A joint initiative between Bognor Regis Town Council and Falcon Homes has returned the working clock after an absence of several months.

It was put back into its prominent location last Tuesday some 25ft (7.6m) off the ground after the town council’s Town Force joined with specialist clock restorer, the Cumbria Clock Company.

Dave Clarke, one of the company’s turret clock engineers, said: “There’s been a lot of interest in this clock. So many people have been going past and saying they are glad the clock is going back.

“Anyone who walks up and down the High Street can see it. It makes all the work worthwhile. ” A similar clock originally adorned the site on the corner of the High Street and York Road before it was removed in the early 1900s.

The restored clock was located at Wade’s Jewellers at the junction of York Road and Belmont Street.

After the building’s demolition in 1975, it was moved to 7-11 High Street where it remained until 2001.

It was kept by clock repairer Derek Frampton until he gave it to the town council, to put back in April 2010 with the help of the solicitors formerly in the property.

Mr Clarke remembers collecting the clock from Mr Frampton’s home and taking it to his company’s premises near Penrith to be restored.

The clock was removed last autumn because the solicitors’ offices were being turned into flats and the site became shrouded in scaffolding. The mechanism, which was inside the building, could no longer be accommodated.

But the developer, Falcon Homes, agreed to the clock’s return if its name and logo was placed on the two 3ft 6ins (about 1.1m) clock faces. The mechanism has also been moved inside the clock of perspex faces and a steel rim.

The process was straightforward, said Mr Clarke. Two electric movements controlled the hands and a motor enabled the clock to catch up after any power cuts. It would also react automatically the hour changes every spring and autumn.

Mr Clarke added: “It’s good to return to put the clock back. I’ve worked with Town Force before. They’re very good.

You get to know and they get to know my requirements. That just makes the job better.”

CAREER inspiration is on offer for young people in Bognor Regis later this month.

The FindItOut Centre in the town will be opening its doors from 1.30pm4.30pm on Tuesday, April 21, for young people and their parents and carers to receive career, money and training advice and be inspired.

The session follows the six Arun Skills and Job Fairs held in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton in recent years to help people to get access to training or job opportunities.

More recently, though, the organisers at West Sussex County Council realised a need also existed for more specific advice to be available. This has led to the new event being arranged.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, the county council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "We have already had great interest in the event from nearby schools that will be

bringing students to it.

"It is specifically aimed at young people who can pop along and find out information on lots of topics including how to get a job, what training is on offer at colleges, building confidence, apprenticeships, emotional support and money advice."

A range of employers in the area, training organisations and support services will be on hand at the event to help with young people's questions.

These will include Outset Youth, Skills Training UK, Making Theatre Gaining Skills, Chichester College, the University of Chichester, UK Harvest, sea cadets and Tag Archery.

The town's FindItOut centre is off Church Lane in Glamis Street in the town centre.

` Oil drilling backed NO OBJECTIONS have been raised by a council about continued drilling for oil in Lidsey.

Arun District Council says it is happy for Angus Energy to be granted permission to continue to use the site in Sack Lane for another ten years.

It has passed its decision on to West Sussex County Council, which will make the final decision. That is due to take place between May 15.

As reported, Angus Energy has asked for planning permission to use the two wells at the site for another ten years.

Simon Davis, an Arun planning officer, says in his report: "The proposal is to retain an existing oil production site, including two existing oil wells as well as production plant and equipment in order to produce hydrocarbons for a further period of ten years.

"It is not considered that the existing site results in any detrimental impacts on the countryside as it is well screened from nearby public viewpoints and is located at the end of a country track.

"The application is a county matter and, as the proposal does not cause any adverse visual harm or result in any pollution issues, it is recommended that no objection is raised to the application."

Art society enjoys successful event SOME 50 works were sold by delighted Bognor Regis Art Society members.

Their creative efforts were snapped up by visitors to the society's Easter exhibition.

The event, held in Arundel, proved to be a busy time for the society in spite of poor weather.

A spokeswoman said: "During the full five days, we sold close to 50 framed/ unframed/prints and the same number

of cards.

"Congratulations to everyone involved in this event and for the hard work you put into it."

Of the 24 members who exhibited, 18 sold works to provide encouragement to everyone involved with the society.

"We have two exhibitions to plan for now - one in July in Arundel and another in August at the Hotham Park Country Fair," the spokeswoman added.

Spikes get the chop for cash NEWLY-BALD John-Paul Walker has raised more than £1,000 with a charity haircut in a Bognor Regis pub.

John-Paul said goodbye to the Mohican spikes which it had taken him three years to grow - and hello to a bumper afternoon's worth of fundraising for the British Heart Foundation.

He said he was delighted by the result of his charity effort at The Hothampton Arms in London Road.

"It was a fantastic achievement to raise more than £1,100 - and all for a haircut.

"I'm massively pleased with how the event went. There must have been 500 people coming and going during the day," he said.

The security guard at Riverside Caravan Centre in Shripney Road staged the fundraising gig and haircut on Sunday in memory of his father, William Walker, who passed away from a heart attack in 1995.

As well as his Mohawk getting the chop from Eric Yilmaz of Tonsorial Parlour, John-Paul, 40, ensured those who went along had an entertaining time.

Eight local bands took part to provide plenty of live music. They included Crash Course, The Ravenguard and Coherent States.

John-Paul spent this week getting used to his bald scalp. He has been without hair before and said he would decide which style of hair to grow in the coming weeks.

"I'm really lucky. My hair grows very fast and very thick. I will grow it back but I will go for a different style," he said.

Heart and circulatory disease killed 563 people in the Arun district last year.

Hannah Miller, the BHF's fundraising manager for Sussex, called for more town residents to follow John-Paul and organise fundraising events for the charity.

Students gain lesson in life with successes with robots and acting BUDDING scientists and engineers from Felpham Community College dominated a competition on their debut.

The students clinched the first two positions in this year's fourth staging of the Antweight Robot Challenge.

The competition is held in Shoreham at the Ricardo engineering company's base and is run in partnership with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Sussex as part of its work with businesses and schools to enthuse pupils to become the engineers and the scientists of the future.

The students worked in small teams to design and build remote controlled robots from recycled materials. The robots had to complete a number of challenges against each other.

Felpham Year 9 student Blake Shearer and Miriam Shelton, Damon Moore and Henry Page, all Year 8, were the winning team. Its runners-up were Will Andrew, of Year 9, and Year 8 students Jack Ashment, Stanley Hards and Cian Tongue.

Gill Woodman, the college's careers co-ordinator, said: "The teams of four were given a radio controller, receiver and two servomechanisms and had to put their design and engineering skills to the test by using cardboard, masking tape and various other materials to design and decorate a robot which would compete in sumo wrestling and football challenges."

One of Felpham's teams won their football challenge and the other team came second in the sumo challenge.

The judges based their overall scores on robot design, team working skills and the performances in the two challenges - and a tense wait for the decisions ended in the successes.

At the Chichester Festival Theatre, 14 drama students from the college completed their National Theatre Connection project by performing at the famous venue.

The performances followed months of hard work by the pupils in Years 10, 12 and 13 on their chosen piece, When they go Low, about a person standing up for what they believe in.

Their performance was part of a weeklong programme of schools or theatre companies involved in the programme.

It also followed two performances at the college attended by a director from the National Theatre and a festival theatre representative.

Curriculum leader for drama Nic Coney said: "The students worked really hard on their performance, constantly responding to feedback and improving their piece to get it as professional as possible.

"We are really proud of all the work they have put in and performing at Chichester Festival Theatre was a brilliant experience for them."

A group of Year 7 students at the college attended a motivational workshop led

by Yapton resident Amanda Worne.

Amanda lives with her husband and four children. Her home was transformed last year by the hit TV show, DIY SOS Big Build.

Amanda broke her back in a cycling accident on Bury Hill in 2015. Confined to a wheelchair, she has not let her disability hold her back and her cando attitude has been an inspiration to many people.

One of the Year 7 students who attended, Amy Barnett, said: "It was interesting to hear about Amanda's life story and how she has got on with life following her accident.

"Amanda asked us to try and tie a bow in a shoe lace using only one hand.

"It was really difficult and frustrating and I now have a lot of admiration for people who manage to overcome disability on a daily basis."

Mrs Woodman added: "This is the second year Amanda has come to Felpham to deliver this workshop and, as last year, it was a brilliant success with the selected students who took part. They enjoyed learning about Amanda's story and just how motivational she is.

"She spoke about how nothing should hold you back, anyone can overcome adversity and everyone should set targets for themselves.

"The students enjoyed the talk and taking part in the activities and feedback was very positive."

` Collision appeal AN ELDERLY man was airlifted to hospital after a collision in Middleton.

The 98-year-old man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. He is being treated for injuries to his head and leg. He was still in hospital earlier this week.

The collision happened just before 10.15am last Friday in Middleton Road between the man's mobility scooter and a blue Suzuki car.

The car driver was reported to be unhurt. Anyone who saw what happened has been asked to contact Sussex Police at: sussex. police.uk or phone 101, quoting Operation Peldon.

` Post Office closed A POST OFFICE'S closure is only temporary, its customers in Bognor Regis have been told.

A Post Office spokeswoman said it wanted to re-open the Victoria Park branch in Aldwick Road. The news has been welcomed by one of its regular customers. Patricia Morgan said: "I've been going there once or twice a week for about 12 years.

"I'm glad it's re-opening because it's a valuable service. Hundreds of people use it every week."

The spokeswoman added: "We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services and we apologise for any inconvenience caused by this temporary closure. We would like to re-assure customers that we want to re-instate services to the area as quickly as possible."

Christine makes it into print FORMER carer Christine Girdlestone has been inspired by her love of an open space near her Aldwick home to write her first story.

Mrs Girdlestone has turned her enjoyment of Avisford Park recreation ground into a near-500 word piece, called The Tree, about his natural delights.

She said: "I walk through Avisford Park a lot. It's a nice park and it's a busy one as well, especially when the five-a-side football matches are being played."

Mother-of-one Mrs Girdlestone, 71, has lived in Elbridge Crescent for eight years.

"I've always enjoyed writing and I just sat down and thought about the short story.

I'm proud of it." She said.

We have printed her story below: As I sit in my local park, I look around me. It’s a lovely day, the daffodils are out despite the rain and snow of the winter.

There they stand, proud and tall, gently swaying in a soft breeze. Yes, it’s spring at last!

I look up at a lovely old tree, sort of standing alone, I look up at its bare branches and through those branches I see the blue sky.

In a few months’ time, when the tree has grown her summer leaves, I won’t be able to see the sky through her branches but, instead, I will see her wonderful green leaves, surrounded by the summer blue sky. But, for now, the spring buds are just appearing after a long, wet, cold and snowy winter.

What stories could this tree tell me, I wonder? Birds nesting, birds singing as they sit on the bare branches, people walking their dogs, people sitting under the tree for shade, families enjoying a picnic or young lovers carving their initials in its trunk, such stories!

Just a little way across the park there is a children’s play area, the tree can see all this, and hear happy laughter of children having fun, mums chattering with other mums, while dads push little ones on the swings! Football matches too, for little teams and big boys' teams, the tree sees them all.

Now, it’s summer, and as I sit in the park and look up at the tree, I see her all dressed up in her wonderful green foliage, the sky is blue with a few white fluffy clouds scudding across.

The tree sees children playing, dogs chasing balls, people sitting enjoying the warm summer sunshine. Gulls are busy overhead, swooping down occasionally to look for titbits left by picnickers, bees and butterflies landing on flowers. The daffodils are long gone, hiding until next spring.

It’s autumn now, and as I sit on the bench in the park, I look up at the tree. Its leaves now turning to shades of gold and brown, a swift chilly breeze blows the leaves from the branches and they land on the ground in a carpet of autumnal colours.

It’s much cooler now and as I sit I don’t hear the children’s laughter in the play area. The lines are now being painted in readiness for the football games played in the park over the winter months.

I no longer sit in the park - for long, chilly winds encourage me to go home in the warm. The tree has shed her leaves once again and the wind is cold. There is no blue sky today, but grey clouds and the threat of rain.

Winter is now well on its way. Christmas will soon be here and gone and, once again, I will long for the spring to return – and the changing seasons – just like the tree.

` Flower club show DONNINGTON Flower Club's members held its spring bulb show and annual meeting last Friday.

In spite of a difficult season yet again, there was a good display of spring bulbs and early flowers delighting members with their bright colours and fragrant scents heralding the arrival of spring.

The bulb competition was won

by April Janman and the monthly table-top competitions for flowers, and fruit/vegetables were won by April Janman and Brian Turbefield respectively.

A full complement of officers and committee was re-elected at the annual meeting when it was emphasised by the club's chairman that the most important thing was to find and stimulate ideas and efforts to generate satisfactory and extra club funds.

The club's next meeting at Donnington Parish Hall will be at 7.30pm on May 4 when Roger Butler will speak about pelargoniums. On May 12, the club will be holding its annual plant sale at 2pm.

` Railways on show THIS Sunday sees Chichester Model Engineers put two of their steam locomotives on display.

The engineers will be opening their Blackberry Lane HQ from 1pm-5pm. Admission is free and train rides are free.

One of the model steam locos on show dates from around 1933 and is a model of a British locomotive captured by the Germans in the First World War, used by them and brought back after the war. The other, homemade, loco is nearing completion by club members.

Siblings step out for their first marathon BROTHER and sister Nigel and Nicola Fitzsimmons are set to run their first marathon this month.

The siblings will be taking part in the world-famous London Marathon. They will stand on the starting line buoyed by the £4,000 they have raised so far for The National Autistic Society.

Nigel, 43, from North Bersted, said: "We have been overwhelmed so far. We can't believe it. If we can make it to the £4,500 mark, that will be amazing and help the charity to continue with all the work they're doing in the world of autism.

"We are both excited and nervous but we really want to try and enjoy the marathon, be spurred on by the crowds, have some fun, put our training into practice and just really try and make it a memorable experience we can look back on and be proud of."

The brother and sister team have been inspired in their fundraising by a person very close to them who is on the autistic spectrum. They took on their mission last summer. It has included school Christmas fairs, tombolas, games and raffles on top of the full-time businesses they run.

Time was also spent - often on some particularly wet, wild, windy and bitterly cold days - on street collections. Totals of £154.39 and £79.42 were raised in Bognor Regis and Chichester centres respectively.

We're almost there.

"You can never really prepare for the illnesses and injuries along the way, of which we've encountered our fair share.

"Nicola has, unfortunately, developed a knee injury along the way so has more recently been on a more low-impact programme, which cuts out the running itself, but sees hours of training on the cross-trainer in the gym.

"The last few weeks before the marathon is about 'tapering' where you train for shorter distances now to ensure you're going out fresher on race day.

"We ran the Bournemouth half-marathon back in October 2017. But we've really been training as such from November when we found out we were awarded our places by The National Autistic Society."

Their fundraising has been backed by a range of businesses and traders. These have been led by the Southern Co-op's funeralcare and food sections.

Unique radio station set to launch appeal A MAJOR fundraising campaign is set to be launched by a unique radio station based in Bognor Regis.

Radio Respect’s volunteers are gearing up to seek £30,000 of backing for new equipment to enable it to keep broadcasting on the internet.

The radio station is the only one known to be dedicated to mental health and mental wellbeing.

But its joint founder, Chris Collins, said the equipment it had been using since its start was starting to show signs of wear and tear in its fifth year.

“The equipment is still all right but it will not last forever. We are looking for fundraising ideas so we can buy stateof-the-art equipment, which would serve us better," he said.

“We want to get rid of the ‘gremlins’ in our tech so we can provide a reliable service and reach out to anyone that loves good music, debate, interviews or has any interest in the ever-expanding mental health problems that many face.

“When we started, I either bought the equipment or it was donated to us.

We broadcast from 7pm weekdays and stream our music 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But it would be good if we could broadcast live during the daytime.

"We have 60,000 listeners and the number of listeners suffering with mental health problems is phenomenal.”

The radio station is now broadcast around the world from the Radio Respect shop in West Street.

The outlet opened six weeks ago and the broadcasts started three weeks later after a short break to enable the move from its former base in Station Road to be completed.

The story of the radio station began when daycare service worker Chris and his wife, Caroline Collins, started it with a PC and a passion to bring the mental health community closer together, helping people to understand their condition and providing a friendly voice.

Discussions are also held with professionals and listeners from the mental health world.

Chris has funded the station’s activities in its early days but its growth has led to the need for additional support.

Some of this has been provided by the prominence of the new premises.

Much of the floorspace is given over to thousands of secondhand LPs, 45s and cassettes. All genres of music are covered and eagerly bought. That is creating an income and plenty of publicity.

Chris said: “We have been doing really well since we opened. I would say we are getting 20-30 customers a day. People absolutely love the shop. " We had people coming in as soon as we opened, wanting to know what we

were doing.

“So many have said they are very pleased to see a shop selling vinyl back in the town. Having the shop has also made us better known as a radio station. Far more people know what we are doing now.

All genres are covered and popular.

"We have a lot of younger people coming in to buy the records. There’s a warmth to music on a vinyl you just don’t get on a CD or download.

“It’s about holding that physical product and the fact the files have not been compressed like they have for other formats," Chris said.

“And, nine times out of ten, if you buy a double album, you have a work of art when you open the gatefold.

Downloading stuff is so sterile in comparision.”

The shop also sells retro equipment on which to play the records. CDs and DVDs are on sale as well. Chris helps in the shop on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

A rota of Radio Respect’s 15 volunteers take charge at other times and help out.

Since starting, Radio Respect has become a community interest company to formalise its status and has linked closely with another CIC, Granddad’s Front Room.

It was the move of Granddad’s Front Room to the High Street which enabled Radio Respect to set up shop in its former premises.

Leading citizens recognised TWO NOTABLE residents of Bognor Regis have received awards from the town's mayor.

Cllr Phil Woodall presented the first Civic Award for Young People - created to recognise a young person he had met in his year of office and who had made a significant impact on the town. He presented this to Lauren Ford, who chairs the South Bersted School Council.

A spokesman for Cllr Woodall said: "Lauren was chosen for her exceptional commitment to the cause, leadership and chairing skills, while the school council visited the town hall for its meeting in December.

"Lauren was present at the civic reception to receive her award, along with her parents and deputy headteacher, Mr Goodwin."

Cllr Woodall also presented the Good Citizen Award to Sarah Boote-Cook for her work in organising many community events in the

town. This has included helping organisations such as Bognor Regis Carnival Association, International Bognor Birdman, the town's kite festival and its swimming club.

Cllr Woodall held the reception at Butlin's in Bognor Regis with thanks to the resort director, Jeremy Pardey.

Dozens of guests attended the event.

Live music was provided by the thoroughly entertaining and energetic RAFA Club Skiffle Band, with help from the mayor on tambourine.

The evening's highlight was the presentation of just over £35,000 in grant aid from Bognor Regis Town Council to more than 20 organisations to help them to deliver their vital services.

` Musicians' concert UNDER and postgraduate students will be showing their musical skills at a concert in Bognor Regis.

The head of vocal studies at the University of Chichester, Susan Legg, is presenting the group of students at the event. It is being hosted by Bognor Regis Music Club at 7pm tomorrow at its concert room at 2 Sudley Road.

The programme will consist of an excited and varied solo and ensemble repertoire. The composers will range from Mozart to Bernstein.

The performers will be Ellie Farmer, Kiera Smitheram and Grace Crumplin (sopranos), Jamie Formoy (tenor), Beth Gallimore (piano), and Lauryn Lewis and Emma Francis (clarinets).

Club chairman Chris Coote said: "Each year we look forward to this concert which gives students an opportunity to play in front of a sympathetic audience.

"We know the performers will be of a high standard, reflecting the quality of the music department, which is the largest in the country with over 1,000 students."

Entry at the door is £6 for members, £8 visitors and students will be admitted free of charge.

Experts help to bring church's history alive f Evie at the service on Easter Sunday

Evie is top dog at Sunday service A PETS as Therapy (PAT) dog, from Bracklesham was the special guest at Bognor Regis Salvation Army Easter Sunday service.

Evie, a fox red labrador, was nominated for a national HiLife PAT Dog of the Year award by the people she helped.

The ten-year-old dog then received the runner-up position in the competition which was announced at Crufts earlier this year.

Owner Alexandra Hughes said: "The people made such a fuss of her and congratulated her winning runner-up in the national competition and were very interested in seeing her trophy, rosette and certificate.

"The children were also excited to meet Evie and played with her after the service."

A retired Salvation Army officer with a rank of major, Alexandra, and Evie visit care homes and a stroke ward.

Evie also regularly visits a centre for adults with learning difficulties. Evie was the nation's runner up out of nearly 6,000 PAT dogs.

Pets As Therapy is an independently funded charity with more than 5,000 volunteers.

Its registered PAT dogs and other pets all provide animal-assisted therapy and bring comfort, smiles and friendship to thousands of people every week.

HISTORY experts enlightened dozens of enthusiasts about the past of Slindon's parish church.

The panel brought alive the details about how the Grade-I listed St Mary's Church was given its current appearance.

Moira Richards was one of those who helped to arrange the afternoon. She said: "It was very successful and we had over 60 people present in the church for the afternoon."

The afternoon was led by ecclesiastical historian Dr Andrew Foster. He has

written extensively about the clergy, churches and cathedrals of the early modern period and most recently about Slindon.

He is the literary director of the Sussex Record Office and an honorary research fellow at the University of Kent.

He was joined by Martin Jones, who has written an architectural article about Sir Thomas Graham Jackson, with more in preparation.

In 1865/66, Jackson was commissioned to restore and modernise a neglected medieval parish church in Slindon.

That work transformed the church and its result is still important today.

Jackson went on to become a lauded Victorian architect and polymath.

Mr Jones has also had his research on Maurice Smelt, the rector of Binsted and Slindon between 1815 and 1865, published in the Sussex Archaeological Society's 2017 volume.

The third speaker on the day was one of Slindon History Society's founding members, Phil Berry.

There has been a church on the site of St Mary's for more than 900 years.

BOSTON Tea Party, the purposeful café chain are opening their latest café in Chichester this May. The Bristol-based company will unveil its 22nd cafe on Baffins Lane. Renovations are underway to complete the new café and is due to open in May creating 30 new jobs for the town, and offering a spacious, 110-seated restaurant.

Boston Tea Party’s family-friendly cafés serve up a range of ethically sourced food and drink, including its award-winning brunch and breakfasts, homemade cakes, lunches and main meals alongside specialty coffees and loose-leaf teas.

Sam Roberts, Managing Director of Boston Tea Party, said: “We’ve been on the look-out for a site in Chichester for a while now, and are over the moon to finally be opening. Our ethos is that bigger isn’t always better, the aim has always been to develop inviting cafés

Around the world tour on offer on store's shelves Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys martin.lury@me.com MORRISONS in Bognor Regis beckoned as I examined some of this weekend's deals which end on next Tuesday, I am reliably informed.

I began the oenological examination by comparing two Chardonnays both retailing for £5.50. Why Chardonnay? you may ask - well, cheap over-oaked New World Chardonnays late last century have led to a wariness of Chardonnay for some people, but the modern style, as was the traditional French style thereof, is more refined, well-balanced and an excellent food pairing!

The 2015 Le Téméraire Chardonnay from the Languedoc region of southern France is aromatic with citrus and apple flavours and a vestige of hazelnut and has a pleasing finish and does not remotely disappoint!

South America, Chile to be precise, is the provenance of the 2016 Head Honcho Chardonnay designed to appeal to a younger consumer base with its quirky and striking label depicting flora and fauna native to Chile.

This wine sports a good nose, is fresh on the palate and is a veritable melon and pineapple taste-feast with a lingering aftertaste - a visual and sensory experience to savour!

Now re-booting to Italy, so to speak, I was able to procure a 2016 Morrison's Soave Classico - another wine which has enhanced its reputation of late. This example from the oldest part of Verona (rings a bell, Will?) is fragrant with floral aromas and exudes citrus and apple flavours and fully justifies its £6.75 price tag!

For just £8 expended, the Morrison's White Burgundy punched well above its weight and turned out to be fragrant and complex, slightly creamy in texture with green apple and grass complementing white peach flavours - one fully meriting your attention!

Scaling the lofty heights of an outlay of £12, my last white wine selection was that of a 2016 Domaine des Côtes Blanches which proved to be crisp , fruity and dry and a classic Sancerre. Contrary to earlier speculation regarding a poor harvest, the fine end to the summer salvaged the crop and thus the predicted shortage did not materialise.

Averting my attention to red wines available, I was delighted to espy a 2013 Sorso Primitivo for just five and a half smackers and, being mindful that sorso means a sip, indulged in a few and noted tobacco and leather coupled with juicy blackberry and blueberry fruits and a spicy bouquet to boot!

It's tantalisingly good, this Italian number and cracking good value! For an extra pound expended , the 2014 Caliente Rojo Tempranillo Campo De Borja, as the name suggests, is both hot and red with a dank , musty aroma , soft and thick in texture with dark fruits in abundance.

Old leather boots, tannin notes and peppery spice are also present with a hint of mocha and the wine improves in the glass and is a possible crowd pleaser!

My final selection was a 2015 Patagonia Argentina Malbec currently reduced to £7.50, a wine made by Bordeaux-born pioneer Hervé J Fabre, the first to make single varietal Argentinian Malbec.

Method

INGREDIENTS • 3⁄4cupwater • 2green tea bags (brew tea the night before to save time in the morning) • 2cupsblueberries, fresh or frozen • 3ice cubes • 12ouncesnon-fat vanilla yogurt • 2tablespoons almonds, whole dry-roasted, unsalted (about 20) • 2tablespoonsflax seeds, ground

elegant, almost Old World style type of Malbec and Argentina's purity of fruit and clear varietal expression shine through in this wine with aromas of black cherry, chocolate and spice leading to dark fruit flavours along with smooth tannins - a true delight - te veo pronto!

1. Bring water to a boil and pour over tea bags.

2. Steep 4 minutes.

3. Squeeze and remove tea bags and discard.

4. Chill tea overnight.

5. If using fresh blueberries, place in freezer overnight.

6. Place tea, blueberries, ice, yogurt, almonds, and flaxseed in blender.

7. Process until smooth.

INGREDIENTS • 60ml olive oil, plus 2 tbsp • 2 large handfuls basil leaves • 2 sea bass fillets (about 140g) • juice ½ lemon • extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling

FOR THE RATATOUILLE • • • • •

1 small red pepper 1 small aubergine 2 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp ground cumin 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 8 baby plum tomatoes, halved • pinch of sugar(optional)

Pan-fried sea bass with ratatouille & basil

Method 1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan and briefly fry 8 basil leaves just for a moment until they crisp up, then lift out of the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

2. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and get a bowl of iced water ready. Blanch the remaining basil leaves for 5 secs. Using a pair of tongs, lift out the leaves and plunge them into iced water so that they cool quickly and keep their colour.

3. Once cool, lift the leaves out and squeeze to remove any excess water.

4. Add the blanched basil leaves to a food blender and pour in 60ml of olive oil. to a pourable sauce, adding more oil if needed, then put in a bowl and set aside.

5. For the ratatouille, halve the pepper, then deseed and slice into thin strips. Cut the courgette into quarters lengthways and slice. Slice the aubergine into thick rounds, then cut each one

into strips.

6. Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the cumin and garlic, and cook for 30 secs. Tip all the veg into the pan, season and sweat for 1 min. Add 100ml water and cook on a high heat for 4 mins. Adjust the seasoning, adding the sugar if needed.

7. With a sharp knife, score each fish fillet with small slits through the skin at regular intervals.

8. To cook the fish, heat the remaining 1 tbsp oil in a frying pan until hot. Season the fillets and place, skin-side down, in the pan. Cook until the skin is golden and crisp, and the flesh is changing colour.

9. Turn the fillets over and cook for 1 min, remove from the heat, then sprinkle over the lemon juice.

Divide the ratatouille between the plates and top with the sea bass. Drizzle with basil oil, a little extra virgin olive oil and serve with crisp basil leaves.

Balance your diet and your body to boost pregnancy FINDING out you are pregnant can be one of the most exciting times of your life, but it’s not always so easy to fall pregnant, and for some people the harder they try, the more stressful the process becomes.

I have worked with a lot of couples that have successfully increased their fertility simply by changing their diets. The body needs to be in balance to fall pregnant.

It's nature's way of making sure you have the best chance possible of a healthy happy baby, and if the body needs a bit of a ‘clean out’ before it allows you to conceive, then it's worth the effort. Sometimes it just takes as little as one or two months to make this happen and alter the body enough to create that harmony within.

Basically, what the body needs is nutrient dense foods that are packed with lots of nutrition per serving. Including these in your daily regime, and cutting out the rubbish, could potentially make all the difference.

Eggs - contain Vitamin D, B12, protein. Make sure to find eggs which are farm fresh and have deep orange/yellow yolks. They are worth the extra cost as they provide much more nutrients and are cleaner than the general factory farmed egg. Find at farmer’s markets, neighbours or the health food shop.

Nuts and seeds – contain omega 3, zinc, Vitamin E, protein. Eat nuts and seeds in their raw form as essential fatty acids and zinc are sensitive to heat and can be destroyed if cooked. The best seeds and nuts for omega 3 are: walnuts, flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Grass-fed meats – contain Omega 3, iron, B12, protein. Grass-fed meats come from animals, which have grazed in grass fields and eaten fresh grass for most of their life. This meat has less fat, and it provides a lot more nutrients because the animals have eaten their natural diet. Grass-fed meats are high in omega 3, have been raised without antibiotics and hormones.

In some people, grains will be a non-issue, but if you have made many changes yet have not seen results, this may be an area for you to look into. Grains and pseudo-grains that are gluten-free (amaranth, rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet) are a great option and tend to be more nutrient dense than the general grains we are used to eating.

Foods to avoid are sugar, soda and pasteurised juices such as bottled apple juice, orange juice, and other bottled fruit juices. They contain concentrated sugar, which can throw off your blood sugar levels and negatively effect your immune system and

hormonal balance. Also avoid any processed/refined and artificial sugars. Some great alternatives are stevia, honey, and maple syrup.

If you are trying to conceive, you may want to cut down or stop your caffeine for a bit as caffeine can affect your hormonal balance, increase your chances of a miscarriage and prevent you from ovulating.

You may want to avoid Soy foods too, as they have been shown to contain oestrogen-mimicking properties. It is best to avoid processed soy foods such as soy-milk, soy burgers, soy protein powder, soy chips, soy meats, and soy cheeses to avoid a negative impact on your hormonal balance. Both men and women are affected by soy.

Community News & Views CYCLE courier Jason Sanger is looking forward to filling in his first tax return in a sign of his new job in Chichester.

Jason was diagnosed with high-functioning autism last August and had struggled to find a position within an organisation that worked for him and the employer.

He began to work with Workaid, a part of the Aldingbourne Trust, which supports adults with learning disabilities to find either paid or voluntary work.

A trust spokeswoman said: "After exploring a number of options, Jason himself came up with the idea of being a Deliveroo cycle courier in Chichester.

"Workaid supported Jason in taking out the relevant personal insurance and registering him as self-employed with HMRC. "They also supported Jason with his initial contact with his Deliveroo rep in Chichester.

"The rest, Jason has done himself, and it would appear that just knowing Workaid's support was there, in the background if he needed it, was enough to give him the confidence to go it alone.

"Since starting delivering with Deliveroo, Jason has reported back that he is loving every minute of being able to work again".

Jason, pictured below, had worked hard at school and college and had gained GCSEs in maths, music, German and humanities. He had also achieved diplomas in performing arts and jazz as well as a GNVQ in leisure and tourism.

He has had a number of paid jobs and currently volunteers at the Mind charity shop in Bognor Regis.

"He was very keen to get some form of paid work, and presented a very refreshing attitude, being willing to try virtually anything," said the spokeswoman.

"When Workaid's employment consultant visited him at the Mind shop, it was apparent that only was he financially better off, but his self-esteem had rocketed too."

MORE than 14,000 votes were cast to elect 30 new members of the West Sussex youth cabinet.

The youth cabinet is a group of young people that covers every constituency seat across the county and represent the young people who live there.

Its members participate in county-wide consultations by presenting the views of young people as well as running their own campaigns. Previous campaigns from the cabinet have been on anti-radicalisation, education and mental health.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I'm delighted to welcome the new members to the youth cabinet and youth parliament.

"This is a great opportunity for the voices of young people to be heard in politics and I look forward to hearing their views on our services and working with them over the coming months."

The 14,396 votes also led to seven new members of the West Sussex Youth Parliament being chosen.

The young parliamentarians and their deputies will be carrying out the same tasks as the youth cabinet as well as being included in the national programme run by the British Youth Cabinet.

They will also be taking part in their national campaigns. This year's are the call for votes for 16-year-olds and education.

Members of the youth parliament will attend its annual sitting. This is an opportunity for issues in West Sussex to be discussed at a national level. It also decides the future campaigns for its members to take part in.

KEEN cyclists Matthew Graf, 28, and Kirsty Gordon, 26, are aiming to cycle around the world inspired by their nephew.

The partners are around halfway through their globeconquering efforts to raise money for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation.

They have about 12,000 miles of their goal of some 25,000 miles to go as they get into the second half of their year-long deadline.

Matthew, 28, who is a civil engineering apprentice with West Sussex County Council, said: "The reason for the fundraising is simple.

"Our nephew had to undergo a life-changing operation of a liver transplant due to a unique and rare condition.

"Without the specialist help, and warrior spirit of my sister and her boyfriend, the outcome could have been

AN NHS trust which provides mental health care and treatment for people living in the Post Newspapers area is pioneering research into conditions which affect the population.

Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's research activity covers a range of areas. They include obsessive compulsive disorder, distressing voices, dementia, preventing long-term social problems in young people and health interventions for people who gain weight from taking medication.

The MindSHINE study (Mindfulness Self-Help Intervention for NHS Employees) is a good example of the trust's performance in generating research and putting its results into action.

The study has had a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of health service staff.

This work led to the trust winning the 2018 best contribution to non-commercial research award from the National Institute for Health Research clinical research network for Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Dr Kate Jones, the network's chief operating officer, said: "Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has successfully raised the profile of mental health research and consistently leads high quality research, helping CRN Kent, Surrey and Sussex to be one of the highest recruiters in mental health research."

Dr Rick Fraser, the trust's chief medical officer, pictured below third left, collected the award on its behalf. He said: "I am very proud of the fantastic work our research and development team do.

"We need more people to take part in a range of mental health research in areas such as dementia, autism, depression and psychosis."

In addition, Dr Clara Strauss, the research lead for the Sussex Mindfulness Centre, was also highly commended in the national institute's rising star category.

Network clinical director Professor Geena Menon said: "Clara has shown leadership and invested her time in developing and leading on a personal portfolio of three studies, and mentoring and supporting five other less experienced chief investigators to develop and lead their lead studies for the network.

"She has also developed links with adjacent networks for successful partnership working."

MindSHINE is aimed at tackling the stress and other mental health difficulties that are among the most common reasons for staff sickness absence in the NHS.

A POSSIBLE solution has been suggested to help to attract more GPs to the Arun district.

Littlehampton resident Terry Ellis has called on Arun District Council to use its recently formed Property Investment Fund to buy homes for doctors. The influx of new homes in the council's local plan land use blueprint, which is due to be finalised soon, was the ideal time to make the investment, he said.

"The PIF could ask for some houses and flats to be provided to them, for the specific use of housing doctors new to the area, at a reduced price. The fund would, in turn, rent these properties to new doctors at an advantageous rental.

"The developers would benefit from showing their community spirit and not just building houses and taking the profits. They would still be profiting from the sale of the houses offered. It would PR for them," said Mr Ellis.

The fund's controllers would offer the housing to the surgeries which had applied for them. New doctors who moved into the properties would be asked to commit themselves to stay with the surgery for a specific period in return for a reduced rent.

He said buying the properties would give the council a greater return than leaving the money in its general reserves.

"This money would be a lifesaver for many of the residents of the area, who are suffering from overcrowded surgeries and lack of doctors, causing in some cases waiting times to see the doctors of anything up to 14 days," Mr Ellis added.

Worshippers opened church 80 years ago

f QUICK

Fundraising campaign led to Aldwick Baptist Church's first service I THOUGHT we would look at more churches in our area. Our first church to look at is the Aldwick Baptist Church in Gossamer Lane, Aldwick, this church was originally the Aldwick Free Church (Baptist), slightly overshadowed – in building size – by the nearby St Richard’s Anglican Church.

As the town started to expand in the 1930s, the Free Church Federal Council of Bognor Regis discussed the building of a number of Free Churches in the district. It was ultimately decided that to avoid duplication the church divisions would be Aldwick – Baptist, Felpham – Methodist and North Bersted – Congregational.

At this time, apparently, the Bognor Regis Baptist Church did not feel able to undertake such an enormous task, but a member of their church Osborne Clayton Thomas considered the possibility of raising funds for a new church.

He was a very successful commercial traveller for MacFarlane Laing & Co, the biscuit manufacturer, and was also quite a driving force in the area. He met a retired Baptist Minister, namely the Rev George Elder Johnson who had retired due to ill health, but who with his wife was running a small boarding house in the area.

Finally, they approached Cyril Douglas Robbins, who had moved into the area and thus these three men became the driving force behind the new church.

It was suggested that the new church should be named the King George V Memorial Church, and appeals began both in the area and also via the network of Baptist churches to raise the much-needed funds, and of course a site had to be found.

A local farmer in the Nyetimber area, Mr Smart had decided to sell certain parts of his land and one such was next to Gossamer Lane.

He kindly gave the church first choice of a site plus an additional plot to enable there to be a rear entrance from Willowhale Avenue. The land cost £641, which was quite a large amount in the 1930s.

With the purchase of the land, the building of the church began in 1937, the local company of Messrs Fryer & Sons, Builders of Rose Green, being involved. They decided that the church should be sited to the rear of the land to enable larger premises to be built in the future. The original church consisted of seating for only 168 with a platform, small kitchen and a small room to be used as the vestry.

The foundation stone was laid during a ceremony on February 24, 1938, with a scroll being set under the stone. The grand opening took place on May 11, 1938, when Mrs Peter Derry unlocked the door to allow entry to their new premises. The guest preacher was the Rev Sutton, the Baptist area superintendent. on June 29, 1938, the first prayer meeting was held with 16 members. The Rev GE Johnston became the first minister, Mr OC Thomas, the secretary, and Mr Robbins, the treasurer.

The original pipe organ was purchased from a church in Battersea, but it had to be dismantled for transportation to Aldwick where it was re-assembled. Ralph Johnston, who was the younger son of the Rev Johnston, maintained the organ for much of its life.

Finally, in 1969, a new organ was installed at the church and Ralph had to dismantle the original organ, which he then removed to his vicarage, because Ralph had followed his father to become a vicar.

The church and congregation grew over the ensuing years necessitating, once again, fund raising on quite a large scale. This included the ability to ‘buy a brick’ costing a 1/- (5p) each for the new building, something we think of as a modern method of fund raising.

In 1953, there was another stone-laying ceremony when a hall and larger kitchen was built, and this was opened on September 2, 1953. Sadly, in 1954, the Rev G Johnston died at the age of 75 but his permanent memorial was the naming of the new church hall at a special service on February 2, 1955.

Next we should look across the road to St. Richard’s Church, also situated on Gossamer Lane, Aldwick. In 1931, the Rev Mosse was asked by the Bishop of Chichester to start a new parish in Aldwick as the parish which, at that time stretched from Bognor to Pagham with new buildings and people moving into the area, was considered to be too large. There was only a small chapel situated near the rear of Aldwick Grange which was inadequate so it was decided

to use a larger hut in Rose Green. Rev Mosse was to be involved in the task of building the new church.

The design of the new structure was left to him, only to be finalised by the diocese. He engaged the services of his brother in law, the architect Francis Gordon Troup, who decided to move away from the trend of the day of using red bricks to local stone, with a Portland stone dressing. Some of the stones used were over 100 years old as they came from Chichester Cathedral.

Eventually, the Diocese bought the current plot of land for £525. Monies had to be raised and the fund started with a gift of £4,500 from the parents of Rev Mosse, then £4,000 came from the Sussex Church Builders and, finally, a further £5,000 was guaranteed so work was able to start.

The foundation stone was laid for St. Richard’s Church on April 3. 1933, by the Rt Rev Southwell, the Assistant Bishop of Chichester. Money continued to arrive via a ‘buy a brick campaign’ plus private individuals and supporters of the church. The church cost £12,300 to build with a further £1,150 being required for the organ.

The church was finally consecrated on May 12, 1934, having taken 13 months to build. While sums raised helped to build the church other items such as the hassocks, choir stalls, chairs and clocks were gifts from private individuals.

When the church was consecrated the altar was bare with no crosses or candles which also had no covers. The visiting parties were received by the Rev Mosse and the Rev Knox, the vicar of Pagham. The church was blessed and, finally, the cross and candles were brought into the church and blessed separately.

putting returned cups in the dish washer afterwards. No experience necessary as friendly staff will be on hand to show you what to do.

Local lads Moore and Batchelor ride PostSport to victory at Fontwell's Easter meet SUSSEX favourites Jamie Moore and Mattie Batchelor showed that local knowledge counts as they rode winners at Fontwell's popular Easter Eggstravaganza Raceday, writes Nic O'Leary.

Nearly 50 horses went to post during a seven-race meeting as a dry and bright Fontwell Park Racecourse hosted the National Hunt meet.

The feature race was the Geoff Smith 65th Birthday Handicap Steeple Chase, contested by five class 4 horses, over a distance of three miles, about two furlongs.

Thanks to a couple of dry days leading up to the meeting, the going on the day was officially soft, heavy in places.

Besides racing, there was plenty to do for all the family, including 300 Easter eggs hidden around the racecourse, for children to find.

A large crowd gathered in the stands ahead of the first race of the day, The Kids Love Days Out @Butlins Bognor Regis Handicap Hurdle Race, which saw 11 Class 5 horses go to post.

Michael Legg, on board Hollywood Ken, let his horse kick on for home with two to go.

Despite pulling right on the run in, the 20/1 shot went on to win by 12 lengths.

Next up was the feature race of the day, which proved to be a cracker. After making much of the early running, Colin Tizzard’s 3/1 favourite, Wizards Bridge, held on to beat Leo Luna, under Moore, into second.

The Sussex jockey made amends in the third race over two miles three furlongs, defying a weight penalty to guide his mount Larry round beautifully to beat favourite Duke Of Kilcorral by two lengths.

Just three horses took part in the fourth, and 10/11 favourite Clondaw Westie pulled well clear on the bit, to cruise to a 26-length victory for Oxfordshire trainer, Lawney Hill.

In the fifth, the Visit Star Sports In Mayfair, London Handicap Hurdle Race, eleven Class four horses went to post. Norman The Red finished strongest, landing the spoils for Brighton trainer John E Long and jockey Mattie Batchelor.

The even-money favourite, Burgess Dream, took the sixth before Neil Mulholland and Noel Fehily extended their leads at the top of the jockeys’ and trainers’ standings this season as Dandolo Du Gite won.

The next family meeting at Fontwell Park takes place on May 27.

DARTS: Trish Kidd showed that she is unbeatable when it comes to the Double In Double Out Ladies Knockouts after winning the title for the third year running.

The Cabin Cruisers player whitewashed Rhonda West (Newtown Raiders) to ensure she remains the only person ever to win the crown.

Kidd, pictured below left, started as she meant to go on, hitting an 108 in-shot and did not let up before taking the first leg. The second leg saw a better game from West with scores of 85 & 80, but Kidd started with 88 and also scored a ton. With 107 left, Kidd hit the treble 19, then the single 18, and double 16 for the ton plus out-shot.

Bognor darts ace is set to face the best

BOGNOR darts ace Joe Osman has his eyes on the prize of a career in the sport after being invited to play against some of the world's best budding players.

The 23-year-old has been honing his skills on oches around the town since the age of seven.

After winning a series of youth matches at county and national level, he has achieved a ranking in the top 256 of the world.

This has led to an invitation to play on the Professional Darts Cooperation (PDC) Development Tour this year against the world's best 16 to 23-year-olds.

It is a massive achievement for a young man from Bognor Regis who still continues to develop his game twice a week at Legends Sports Bar on the town's pier.

Speaking ahead of the first of four PDC tour events, which is in Wigan this weekend, Joe said: "To be invited to play

on the Professional Darts Cooperation Development Tour is a massive honour and is something I'm looking forward to.

"To be classed in the top 256 of the world is a fantastic achievement and something which I am proud of."

Joe started playing darts aged seven when his mum and dad got him his first dartboard.

He hit his first 180 soon after.

Joe said: "My Auntie Carole and Uncle Garry would often come round and play against me. They noticed my talents and I joined their dart team when I was 11.

"Once I proved my ability locally I got asked to join the Sussex County Youth team where I finished highest out of the age group of Sussex Players in my first year.

"As the years went on I was invited to represent England at a soft tip tournament in Holland in April 2014 as well as in France in 2015."

On the same night at Newtown Social Club was the Captains & Secretaries knockout. Played in a world cup format, the captains played each other, then the secretaries. If equal, a sudden death one leg pairs game decided the winner.

Wadsworth started the captain's game strongly, hitting two tons on his way to taking the first leg. Both players split the next two legs, but the QE2 man pushed on in the fourth to take the match 3-1.

His partner Danahar proved even more ruthless in the secretaries' match, winning it 3-0 to seal the title for the QE2 pair.

CROSS COUNTRY: In the final national cross-country event of the season, local students played a major part in giving Sussex sealing a seventh place finish overall to cap an excellent all-round team performances.

There were two team medals for Sussex, one of which was in the senior boys' race. Will Broom (Bishop Luffa) ran the race of his life to lead the county home in a superb 20th place, the second best placing of any Sussex athlete on the day.

He was followed by another four team members in the top 80, one of whom was fellow schoolmate Leo Stallard, which sealed a team bronze medal.

There was another Chichester athlete leading Sussex home in the seniors’ girls race, with Imogen Matthews storming through the field to finish 68th.

In the intermediate girls' race, Olivia Macdonald (Seaford College - 28th) and Olivia Wiseman (Bishop Luffa - 31st) spearheaded a great team performance to finish in third to take another bronze.

In the intermediate boys' race, Ned Potter continued his fine form with a 59th place, while Liam Dunne, another Chichester based athlete, finished 127th to be the third home for the county.

Leaders next for Pagham PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds says the pressure is off his young side as the Lions remain in the hunt for the SCFL Premier title.

Two wins in the past week have kept the Nyetimber Lane side in second place, just one point off top spot.

Next up for Pagham is a mouthwatering clash away at leaders Haywards Heath tomorrow (3pm).

Win that - and the Lions will be in the driving seat with just four matches of the league season to go.

But Simmonds, who manages the side alongside Richie Hellen, said he believed his side were only focused on the next game.

He said: "Not many people were picking us to be one of the sides in the hunt at the start of the season so to be in the promotion places going into the last month of the season is testament to how hard everyone's worked.

"We'll just keep going about our business in the same way as we have done all season and see where it takes us.

"We've not lost in the league since December and, if we continue to do the things that have given us success in that

time, we'll certainly be there or thereabouts."

Pagham go into the tabletopping clash after seeing off one of their rivals in the past week.

In front of a crowd of more than 100, the Lions produced an inspired display to beat fifth-placed Saltdean United 3-0.

Daniel Simmonds was the match winner hitting two with James Thurgar hitting home the third with half-hour still to play.

The match was marred by three red cards after a first-half fracas, including a dismissal for Pagham's defender Ryan Davidson, who will now miss some of the run in.

Pagham go into the Heath match on a roll and are now undefeated in 17 in the league.

The Lions won the return fixture in December 3-0, with Simmonds scoring a hat-trick.

CHICHESTER City will be looking to revive their fading promotion hopes with two home matches in four days giving them the chance to bag a crucial six points.

After being in contention for much of the season at the top of the SCFL Premier, Miles Rutherford's side are in danger of being pipped at the post.

Chi have slipped to sixth, seven points behind league leaders Haywards Heath, after a 1-0 loss at seventh-placed Peacehaven last weekend.The defeat was compounded with the sending off of frontman Dave Herbert, who will now miss half of their remaining six matches.

But, with two home matches in the next week, Chi have the perfect opportunity to get back in the hunt.

First up tomorrow is a visit from relegationthreatened Hassocks (3pm), a side who City have already beaten 4-0 away this term.

Then on Tuesday all eyes will be on Oaklands Park as Chi host third-placed Three Bridges (7.45pm). The Crawley-based side have won their past six on the trot and, with games in hand, are the favourites for a swift return to Isthmian South.

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce is hoping his side can switch their sights on to winning some silverware after a crucial loss hit their promotion hopes.

Officials at the Recreation Ground have been working hard all season to ready The Sids for a return to senior football.

But a 3-0 home defeat against Alfold last weekend means Pearce's side are sixth in SCFL Division Two. A 3-0 win against Clymping on Tuesday restored some confidence, with Jake Goulding (2) and Dan Bassil scoring the goals.

But, even with games in hand, the eight point

gap to league leaders Rustington looks too big to close with just six matches to play.

Three points against fourth-place Westfield at home tomorrow (3pm) will help their cause. But Sids hopes now are firmly focused on retaining the league cup - with Thursday's semi-final at Pagham's Nyetimber Lane pitching them against leaders Rustington (7.30pm).

Pearce said: "Obviously we want to retain the Division Two cup but the semi will not be easy. The nice thing will be playing on a decent surface at Pagham which will be good for the lads. They do the hard work the rest of the

As for promotion, Pearce said everything is in place - providing they can get the results.

He said: "It depends on the FA restructuring.

Fellow SCFL Division Two side Bosham are up to fifth after a 6-0 victory over Clymping made it sevens wins on the bounce.

Next up for the Robins is a trip to secondplaced Roffey tomorrow (3pm) before a league cup semi-final against Cowfold on Tuesday (7.30pm) at Steyning's Shooting Field ground.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's poor form continues after two defeats in the past week.

Steve Bailey's side are now without a win in seven matches after drawing 1-1 at St Francis Rangers - Frazer Smith scoring - before losing 2-0 at Storrington in midweek.

Next for the ninth-place Blues is a home match against St Francis tomorrow (2pm) before a trip to Midhurst on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, after three weeks off, Chichester Ladies will return to action in the FA Women's Premier League South on Sunday, making the trip to play Coventry City (2pm).

Matt Wright's side are seventh in the 12-team division and have all but secured their status in the third tier for another season.

Final home match hopes for Blues CHICHESTER RFC are aiming to finish their season on a high by putting on a show in front of their home fans.

Scott Ashley's side welcome Old Colfeians to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm) with fourth spot in London One South all but sealed.

With the visitors sitting third bottom, Chi's faithful will be hopeful of a convincing display which will send them off into the summer full of hope for the next campaign.

Blues certainly go into the match with momentum after a 58-5 win on the road at Maidstone last weekend.

A fine attacking display against a side already relegated saw Chi rack up their second ten-try display of the campaign, with

scrum half Harry Seaman scoring a hat-trick.

In further good news for all at Oaklands, youngsters Josh Goodwin and George Cook both made appearances as England U18 beat Ireland U18 15-13 in a tight match. *Bognor RFC round off their season tomorrow with a trip to Overton (3pm) and an outside shot of becoming champions.

The Purple and Greens sealed second spot in Hampshire One with a convincing 1130 victory over Isle of Wight at Hampshire Avenue last weekend.

Bognor are just five points behind league leaders United Services Portsmouth.

But the league leaders play struggling Ellingham and should have plenty of chances to seal the one point needed to win the title.

Relegation-bound Bognor want to avoid a rock bottom finish Next Game

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce says the aim is for the Rocks to avoid finishing rock bottom in the National South.

With five games still to go and 13 points separating them from safety, the Nyewood Lane outfit are all but set for a swift return to step three.

A 3-2 defeat away at Goucester City on Saturday near enough confirmed relegation for the Rocks.

But there was some cheer when home fans were treated to just the second win at home in the league since August when goals from Ibra Sekajja and Tommy Scutt sealed a 2-1 win against play off-chasing St Albans City.

Those three points also lifted Bognor off the bottom. With a home match against Hemel Hempstead tomorrow (3pm) followed by a trip to fellow strugglers Concord Rangers on Tuesday (7.45pm), Pearce has now tasked his players with making sure the Rocks do not fill 24th spot come the end of April.

He said: "We have a very loyal bunch of supporters and we have a duty to give them the best we can every week.

"We will continue to gain as many points as we can and the challenge is not to come bottom of the league. If we come any higher than that, we will be very pleased."

As with much of the rest of the season, it could very easily have been different week for the Rocks if things had gone their way.

A poor first 85 minutes at Gloucester saw Bognor slip to 3-0 down. Late goals from Sekajja and Keaton Wood reduced the deficit and Rocks almost escaped with a draw through Sami El-Abd. On Tuesday, an excellent first half display put Bognor two up through Sekajja and Scutt.

In the second period, Saints were much better and in injury time Harvey Bradbury, son of Havant & Waterlooville boss Lee, got one back for the visitors.

Then the Hertfordshire side were awarded a contested penalty for an apparent off-the-ball foul by Rocks' keeper Dan Lincoln.

Skipper El-Abd was sent off in the aftermath.

But Lincoln made amends, saving the penalty and sealing the first win in seven for Pearce's side.

The drama did not stop then as players and officials from both teams clashed on the final whistle.

Pearce said: "Like most games this year, the match against Gloucester could have gone either way if our final pass into the box or final touch was better.

"Against St Albans we got them right. It could have been four by half time with a bit more care.

"The win gives the players confidence but they are hard games. Hemel will be a tough match. The dividing line between success and defeat in this league is very slim."

'Rebuilding work is underway' THERE may be a month of the season still to play. But rebuilding for Rocks starts here and now.

With 15 points still up for grabs and 13 points between them and safety, Bognor boss Jack Pearce admits that even with five game still to go, thoughts now must turn to succeeding in the Isthmian Premier.

Two players have already left Nyewood Lane, with Kristian Campbell and Manny Adebowale returning to their parent clubs Bromley and Dover respectively.

Pearce says neither are likely to play in a Rocks shirt next season when Bognor return to the third tier. But he will start sounding out other squad members in the coming days about signing on for the new campaign.

With many clubs struggling after relegation, the veteran boss knows his side need to hit the ground running.

Pearce said: "We will be talking to them [the players] in the next week and asking them their plans. A few will say yes, a few will say not sure, and a few will say no - that's the way it always will be.

"We will try and do it now to get things sorted but most of the players will take until the end of the season before making a decision."

It’s always nice to get back to winning ways like we did against St Albans City.

I don’t think I have seen a much better first half performance from the team all season.

We scored first for once on eight minutes with a neat finish by Ibra Sekajja and then Tommy Scutt netted his first goal of his career for Bognor (apart from THAT headed own goal against Wealdstone) to give us a two-goal lead.

I looked over to Richard Essen on the tannoy and we couldn’t believe we were seeing the same team.

As we've come to expect from the Rocks though this eason, things are never easy and it did get a little squeaky bum time towards the end of the match.

St Albans got a goal, then were awarded a penalty, leading to another red card for Sami El-Abd. At 2-1 at this point it looked like the Saints would steal a draw but Dan Lincoln came to the rescue again with a fine save from the spot.

The referee blew the whistle straight after to give Bognor the double over the Saints.

What followed was not acceptable. It was horrific after the final whistle with stewards getting harmed by visiting players and management on the bench.

This was a crucial win for Bognor. Who would have thought that St Albans were that high in the league?

I am afraid their management team failed to set a good example all game.

However, with Concord Rangers, Poole Town and Whitehawk all losing recently it helped us to reduce the gap at the bottom.

The gap of 13 points is exactly the same as it was a fortnight ago before Easter.

Our home game against Chelmsford City on Good Friday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

As soon as I had arrived at

around 1.20pm, I could see the pitch wasn’t going to see any play. The referee took good time before finally calling the game off shortly after 2pm. It didn’t stop raining that day!

The Eastbourne Borough game away on Easter Monday wasn’t much better as we lost that 3-0.

Tensions again flared at the handshake between first team coach Dabba and former boss Jamie Howell. They worked closely together over a number of years, so it was a surprise to see them being pulled apart after the final whistle.

I sat next to a nice Sports fan at the match and he had been following them for eight years.

He told me all about the set up at Eastbourne and I agreed they had everything in place to progress.

I advised they needed to give Jamie a proper chance as he will need time to develop a team. He did really well for us over the years but we shall see if Borough give him an extended run as boss.

That defeat against our Sussex rivals did set us back in the bid to escape the drop so it was no surprise that just a few dozen of us made the trip out west for the Gloucester City match.

We deserved a draw in the match at Evesham this past week as well. But for me we didn’t start performing until the final 5 minutes and by then it was too late!

Lee Roberts and I on the Rocks Radio commentary didn’t see that late drama coming.

by Sami that was denied by a reaction save right at the death had us all on the edge of our seats. It's never dull following this team is it?
