“There is little point in going back to the broader political issues about the housing. Make sure you are putting all your arguments on to these specific points.

“You need to have experts to make sure you are deploying your arguments as best as possible.”

Alan hangs up his lollipop for good A LOLLIPOP man has seen his last pedestrian across the road after 11 years of service.

Alan Johnson, 82, who has been on duty outside Aldingbourne Primary School for more than a decade, retired at Easter.

Children celebrated and thanked Mr Johnson at a special assembly held at the school on Thursday, March 29, for his commitment in all weathers.

Mr Johnson, who has lived in the village since 1965, said: "I will definitely miss the banter with everyone.

"We all know one another and have a good gossip in the morning. Even many of the cars that drive past toot their horns or wave at me.

"People cross the road and then ask me about the weather and all sorts.

We laugh and say I am the pavement information centre!

"I have been in voluntary service in the village ever since I moved here and I will carry on doing various things to keep busy.

"I have been a chairman, a vicechairman, started up clubs, raised

money, all sorts! I will have plenty to do.

"My father got me in to volunteering from a young age, saying it was good to get some young blood in the system helping out."

Mr Johnson has also been involved with search and rescue teams in and around West Sussex.

He said: "I have been part of about 100 searches for missing people all across West Sussex, parts of Kent, Hampshire and Surrey, and we won the Queen's Award for our search work in 2014. I am also part of the West Downs Neighbourhood Watch Task Force."

Mr Johnson says he will still be getting up early, commenting: "I used to be a farmer as well so I have always been an early bird. It doesn't matter to me at all.

"The traffic has definitely grown from 11 years ago.

"I would say I get about 2,000 cars going past me in the time I am here in the mornings.

"I have really enjoyed working for such a lovely school, I will miss everyone terribly."

MOTORISTS have been warned temporary roadworks will be carried out on one of Felpham's main roads this month.

The works will be started on the B2259 Felpham Way dual-carriageway from April 23 as part of the major developments at the University of Chichester.

They are due to take seven weeks to complete and are needed to create a new permanent entrance to the £35m engineering and digital technology park being built on the campus next to the road.

A university spokesman said:

"The developments will include the installation of new lighting for the pathway and road, a new central island between the two lanes, and a pelican crossing to allow pedestrians to safely cross the carriageway."

Additional works have already begun on developing the pavement and verge which surrounds the technology park.

"The temporary roadworks will be removed and the B2259 Felpham Way opened as normal once the developments have been completed," added the spokesman.

The first students will set to study in the new centre this September.

Cyclists' worries

f Felpham Community College students at Lodge Hill ADRENALINE flowed when Felpham Community College students took on a series of challenges.

The selected Years 8 and 9 pupils were pushed physically and mentally to complete the activities such as using low ropes to get across an area, country hikes and problem solving tasks.

Team work was important for all the activities and support and encouragement were vital ingredients for every task during the three days at the Lodge Hill centre in Pulborough.

Ben Mackley, one of the Year 9 students who took part, said: "I enjoyed the whole trip. It pushed us out of our comfort zone and made us develop our team work, leadership and resilience skills.

"My favourite activity was the low ropes. We all had to work together to

get across and some us took the lead, including me, to help guide the team.

"Our team did the best and it was very satisfying."

His fellow Year 9 student, Matilda Hill, said: "The hike on the first day was hard work. It was really cold but we felt accomplished when we had finished.

"I enjoyed the orienteering exercise around the grounds of Lodge Hill as we couldn't give up.

"We had to keep working at it and going back to clues and areas to get it all completed correctly.

"It was also nice to work with students you don't usually work with and the different year group.

"We all made new friends and the team building was good for us."

The 61 students were chosen to become involved as part of an

enrichment programme for those in the college who are most able.

Lucie Szymure, an assistant headteacher at the college, said: "The students have been fantastic and their hard work, motivation and enthusiasm has been incredible.

"We have been particularly impressed with how the students prepared the team research activity and the presentations they produced. A lot of hard work had gone into them before the trip.

"The team work across the three days with all the activities has been a real credit to the students and we are glad everyone enjoyed themselves, as well as developing skills and learning some new ones as well."

It was her first time with the course, though the college had held several events, she added.

CYCLISTS have highlighted danger spots on roads around Bognor Regis.

Four specific matters which threatened their safety were identified at the fifth anniversary meeting of the town's cycle forum.

The event attracted 46 people keen to create a better environment for those who get around on two wheels.

They called for action by West Sussex County Council to create a more joined-up thinking and strategic approach to cycling as part of an integrated transport policy.

This included tackling: * the gap in cycle path provision on the new bypass where it crosses the A29 between the McDonald's and Rolls-Royce roundabouts * the pinch-points on the build-outs in Fish Lane, Aldwick * over-weight lorries in Lake Lane in Barnham, damaging verges and creating 'no go' areas for cyclists and pedestrians * designing safe approaches to the start and end of new cycleways when they are on the drawing board Dave Barton, the forum's chairman, said: "There was concern about the state of the roads and particularly potholes, obviously more dangerous for cyclists who either have to go over them or swerve into traffic to avoid them. Cyclists were encouraged to log road defects through the lovewestsussex website or smartphone app to ensure the county council is at least aware of specific defects."

The meeting was held at St Mary's

Centre in Felpham to hear about the activities of the cycle forum.

Those who went along were also invited to submit their ideas for improved cycling in the wider Bognor Regis area.

Reports were also given by Graham Crouch of Cycle Bognor, Bob Dewick from Sustrans walking and cycling charity, Chris Cooper, representing the University of the Third Age cycle groups, and Geoff Farrell, from the West Sussex Cycle Forum.

"It was suggested that a wider network of cyclists could carry more weight in terms of tackling specific aspects and communicating with various levels of local government," said Mr Barton.

"Other ideas included supporting a car-free day on September 22, signage to denote known danger points to cyclists and a cycle maintenance stand in Bognor Regis town centre, support to help with bicycle maintenance and and integrated 'train plus bike' promotion."

The forum would review the detailed feedback from the meeting and create a list of priorities from it, he added, and report back to its members.

Since 2013, the Bognor Regis Cycle Forum's members have campaigned about several issues which affect life on two wheels.

These have included being able to cycle along the promenade, calling for improved road cycle routes and highlighting problems on the A259 Bognor Regis-Chichester cycle route.

` March weather TEMPERATURES in Bognor Regis last month varied by more than 20 degrees.

March's warmest day was the 26th when the thermometer in Andrew Goodwill's weather station in his home received 19C. The coldest day was the 1st at -4.4C early in the morning.

There was 18.3mm of rain during the month, with the wettest day seeing 6.6mm fall on the 8th.

The wind peaked at 22.1mph on the 15th, which saw the highest average wind speed of 15.9mph.

` Taxi fares rise TAXI passengers in the Arun district have begun to pay more.

Fares in hackney cabs went up on Sunday after district councillors backed the increases.

The new fares equal £4.30 for the first mile and £2.30 for each following mile for up to four passengers. The previous charge was £4.20 for the first mile and £2.20 for each subsequent mile.

` Houses refused OUTLINE plans for up to 157 homes in Fontwell have been rejected.

Arun District Council planning officer Richard Temple said the scheme between Wandleys Lane and West Walberton Lane was unsuitable.

It was unsustainable development in the countryside and lacked lit footpath access to shops and bus stops, he said in his report.

Beach group is disbanded AN ATTEMPT to revive a community group to keep Pagham safe has been defeated.

Parish councillors decisively agreed to disband the Pagham flood defence steering group.

They also decided to carry on with their membership of the coastal issues advisory group which combines authorities such as Arun District Council and the Environment Agency with community representatives.

The decision in last week’s parish council meeting came after its chairman, Cllr Ray Radmall, called for the steering group to be given a new lease of life.

It was set up several years ago to promote the community scheme to cut a channel through Church Norton Spit.

This has grown off the East Front Road beach frontage to cause the tides in and out of the mouth of Pagham Harbour to scour the beach of shingle.

This has put the beachfront bungalows – and the housing behind them – at risk of flooding.

“We have lost a couple of key members and I wonder if there are other people on this council who would like to step forward to join this steering group,” said Cllr Radmall.

He said he and one of the other two remaining members talked frequently about the steering group.

“We need to get the first stage of any work completed before next winter,” he said. “We don’t want to go through another winter like the last one.”

But the other council members, while agreeing on the need for coastal defence work, said they believed belonging to the coastal issues advisory group was the best approach to take.

Cllr Dawn Hall said: “There is no point in having two groups talking about the same thing, with one reporting to the other.

“The coastal issues group brings everyone together in one place. The steering group was set up to look at cutting the spit. That idea has run its course.

“Being involved in the coastal issues group, everyone gets the chance to have their say about what their concerns are.”

Cllr David Huntley said: “We need to pursue the coastal issues group at the moment. It’s slow but it’s working and getting everyone together.

“In person to person negotiations, people tend to tell other people what they want to here.

“In a public meeting, like the coastal issues group, there is no getting away from what people have said. It gets minuted and recorded.”

Changing tide patterns have caused the Church Norton Spit to change in recent months to rule out the option to cut a channel.

The current favoured solution to stop the erosion of Pagham’s beach is fantail groynes.

Cllr Brian James said these were being discussed at the coastal issues group by Arun’s engineers.

Creative pupils make some eggcellent Easter bonnets at school CLEVER pupils at a Bognor Regis school let Easter go to their heads.

The younger children at Edward Bryant School designed Easter bonnets to wear on their last day of term last week.

Seven of them were chosen as winners in a competition which gave the judges a difficult choice between the colourful and creative headwear on school.

Chickens, eggs and a mass of yellow figured prominently on the bonnets.

Emma Purkis, deputy headteacher at the school in London Road, said: "I can't believe my eyes at how amazing all the children's bonnets look.

"A lot of hard work has gone in to

these and the pupils should all be very proud of themselves."

The winners said they were proud of their efforts.

Tyler, aged five, said: "It took me a while to make my bonnet. I like the chickens on it the best. I love the sweets I got for winning, they are my favourites."

Six-year-old Lukass said: "I love the balloon on my bonnet. I made my bonnet in just one night but my mum and dad helped me. I am really happy that I won."

Luca, aged five, said: "My favourite animal is a rabbit so I have lots of them on my bonnet. I spent lots of times making it at home."

More seafront investment is demanded to boost town

MINI golf course operator Paul Tiernan has called for more investment on Bognor Regis seafront.

Mr Tiernan marked the 25th anniversary of his seafront business opening by saying more needed to be done for the town in the next 25 years.

He opened his attraction in Waterloo Square when the area could still boast an array of other businesses.

Today, the southern half of its eastern side consists of an empty former amusement arcade which is to let and the hoarding around the site where the Beach Hotel and fish and chips shop was destroyed in a blaze in November, 2016.

The pier opposite his 18-hole course had also been reduced in length. The Royal Hotel nearby had closed as well.

Mr Tiernan said: "I want to be here for d all be veryanother 25 years and then I think that will be it. His loyal customers also include Kevin Grantham and his family. They have a holiday caravan in Rose Green and have travelled from north-west London for weekends and holidays for four years.

Mr Grantham said: "The course is well maintained, the flowers are lovely and it's

always clean and tidy.

"Paul and everyone else at the course is really friendly and take pride in their business. It's always a difficult course to play as well. It's always a challenge."

Mr Tiernan runs the course with his wife, Carol Tiernan, and his sister, Jay Osborne, with some seasonal staff.

They are open every day from March 1 to November 30 and winter weekends, weather permitting.

Lilian enjoys being 102 EASTER was a time of double celebration for a Yapton resident.

Lilian Sears reached her 102nd birthday last Saturday to lay claim to being the village's oldest resident.

Mrs Sears was joined by several members of her family to enjoy tea and cakes at Yew Tree Nursing Home for her special day.

She said: "I am very blessed to have such a family.

They are good to me and I keep well on the whole."

Mrs Sears has one daughter, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-greatgrandchild on the way.

She has lived at the home, in North End Road, for just over four years. She said she enjoyed watching TV and was an avid reader of magazines.

The Second World War saw her work in a pencil factory. By then, she had married her late husband, Leslie, in the mid-1930. He worked as a compositor in a printing company after the war and the family moved from Watford to St Albans in 1959.

Mrs Sears' daughter, Pat Snell, said: "My mother is a pretty strong character and she is generally a happy person."

From page one Arun has put back the deadline for objecting to these developments to April 20 for Church Barton House, April 30 for Hook Lane and Pagham Road and May 11 for Sefter Road to allow more time for consultation.

Mr Gibb's meeting with PAGAM in Pagham Village Hall enabled its members to pass on the results of their investigations into the thousands of pages of information with the plans.

This has led to his letters to the county council about the impact on air pollution on Pagham Road caused by the extra vehicles from the new housing, to Highways England for its views about improvements to the Whyke and Vinnetrow Road roundabouts on the A27 and the RSPB to find out its views about the effect of the Pagham Road site on the nearby local nature reserve.

Retired civil engineer and transport planner Michael Hampton said analysis showed the traffic flow along Pagham Road was already so bad cyclists made up only one third of one per cent of the vehicles but were involved in 12 per cent of the accidents.

“The county council has asked for money for road improvements. But none of the money is going be used there because the land is all privately owned and the money is not enough to buy them out," he said.

PAGAM vice-chairman Alan Pivett said: “You can't have housing without a very good economic base which provides employment."

Gill Homer, PAGAM's chairman, said: “The majority of the housing will not be affordable to young people, some of it, but not enough. The housing just brings down people to retire.”

New plans for village homes

A BOGNOR REGIS music fan is to sacrifice his 14ins Mohican haircut to help save lives.

John-Paul Walker, 40, is set to say goodbye to each of the towering spikes on his head this Sunday at a charity fundraising gig in the town.

The security guard has chosen to surrender to the scissors in memory of his father, William Walker, who passed away from a heart attack in 1995.

John-Paul's sponsored haircut in aid of the British Heart Foundation will take place at The Hothampton Arms in London Road towards the end of the charity event.

The gig will begin at mid-day and the first of eight bands from the area will start playing from 1pm.

They will include Crash Course, The Ravenguard and Coherent States. Entry is free.

John-Paul said: "The gig, and my head shave, has been in the planning for

months and I enjoy supporting the BHF whenever possible. After losing my dad to heart disease, it really highlighted how important it is to keep funding vital heart research.

"Having all 14ins of my Mohican shaved off is a big deal for me and a great opportunity to raise lots of money for a fantastic cause."

Eric Yilmaz, of The Tonsorial Parlour in Bognor Regis, will perform the head shave, which John-Paul hopes will raise a lot of money for the charity.

Heart and circulatory disease is responsible for around 155,000 UK deaths each year - 563 of which in 2017 were in the Arun district.

The BHF is the leading funder of independent heart research in the UK. Hannah Miller, its fundraising manager for Sussex, said: "We never cease to be amazed by the extraordinary ways in which people like John-Paul fundraise for the BHF."

` BID meeting SUNDAY'S start of the business improvement district in Bognor Regis will be followed by its first general meeting.

The company which is running the BID activities in the town centre has been incorporated and one of its first tasks is to stage the meeting.

Town centre manager Toyubur Rahman has told businesses in central Bognor Regis: "This meeting is to introduce the board of directors, appoint additional directors, outline the year one delivery plan, network with businesses and answer any questions you have.

"The meeting will take place in late spring."

All BID levy payers are eligible to be members of the Bognor Regis BID company at no extra cost.

Being a member entitles the business to vote at the general meeting.

Other membership categories exist for those who want to make voluntary levy payments.

Any member is also eligible to become a director of the company.

"The more businesses that get involved with the BID the better Bognor Regis will be for business," said Mr Rahman.

"The general meeting will be a good opportunity to meet everyone, find out how to get involved and discuss future initiatives."

A BID is an arrangement where businesses get together, decide which improvements they want to make and what it will cost them.

As reported, better promotion, an improved night-time economy and security are among the initial aims.

Masked revels are fundraising boost A MASQUERADE ball in Bognor Regis saw guests dress up in style to help a leading councillor to raise money.

The fundraising event at Butlin's in the town was held by Arun District Council's chairman, Cllr Jacky Pendleton.

The evening was a great success.

More than £1,000 was raised for her chosen charities, Home Start Arun and ChallengeU. The proceeds will be added to the funds she has already raised during her year in office. They will be presented to the charities in May. Cllr Pendleton said: "I want to say a huge thank you to all my guests for attending and for their generosity and support.

"Many others were unable to attend but made donations and provided raffle prizes and I am so grateful for their contributions.

TREE experts have awarded a South Bersted pupil one of their top accolades.

Nathan Drew has received the Woodland Trust Sapling Award 2017 for his work in the grounds of South Bersted CE Primary School, which he attends.

A school spokesman said Year 4 pupil Nathan was a deserving recipient.

"Nathan won the award for his ongoing enthusiasm towards many aspects within the school grounds, from planting tree saplings donated from the Woodland Trust to his great planting skills, especially with the vegetable patch.

"Nathan deserves this award as he has been a great example to others to not only enjoy his surroundings but maintain them to a high standard."

Nathan was presented with his certificate during a collective worship at the school towards the end of last term.

He is pictured left with the school's gardener, Natalie Austin, left, and one of its teaching assistants, Jan Colwell.

Both Natalie and Jan run the afterschool Eco Club at the school in Church Lane.

The Woodland Trust offers free saplings as part of its work with schools to celebrate woods and trees and to show pupils their importance.

The masquerade revels were well attended by dozens of supporters.

Guests included the town mayors of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, Cllrs Billy Blanchard-Cooper and Phil Woodall, Arun district councillors and their chief executive, Nigel Lynn.

A welcome drink greeted them and this was followed by a buffet and dancing as well as fundraising games and raffles to focus the evening on its main purpose of supporting the charities.

An Arun spokeswoman said the hard work and excellent service of the team at Butlin's was appreciated.

Those who had kindly donated raffle prizes were also thanked for their generosity.

Victorian club looking forward to next 125 years in town premises TIME travellers in Bognor Regis should head to the town’s oldest social club.

The Bognor Club has celebrated its latest anniversary in its historic surroundings with a makeover which reflects its Victorian heritage.

The new carpet, curtains and decorations fit the premises so well those members who originally moved into the building in October, 1893, would still feel at home.

New club secretary Jennie Wright said: “2018 is the 125th anniversary of the club moving into the (Grade II) listed building.

"One-eighth of a millennium is something we intend to celebrate to the full. We will be putting on a series of events throughout the year to commemorate our long contribution to the life of Bognor Regis. We are the custodians of an important part of local history, yet we are one of the town’s best-kept secrets.

"We have just completed an extensive refurbishment to preserve the building for future generations.”

The building at 2 Sudley Road dates back to 1837 when it was the Old Assembly Rooms for concerts, balls and theatrical performances as well as an early town hall.

The Bognor Club was formed in 1871

by Lord Nigel Kennedy of Aldwick for reading, cards and billiards.

It initially met in West Street and then the former Aldwick Hotel at the Aldwick Road and Victoria Road junction before the current building became available.

Life has since continued largely unchanged. The ground floor is now a snooker room. On the first floor is the

main room for bridge and chess sessions and classical music concerts plus a bar.

Women were admitted in 1948 and the club’s members consist of some 180 bridge players and 35 snooker players.

Each has an equal share in the club and a committee oversees its activities.

Mrs Wright said: “Bridge is the most popular activity, with sessions on four or five days a week. We run sessions and teaching for all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced players.

“We are responding to demand by starting new bridge classes, for beginners and improvers, in September and are pleased that John Austin – a well-known bridge player in Sussex – has agreed to teach these courses. It’s a convivial and stimulating game for all ages.”

The card game is played competitively and members take on each other for various trophies.

Eddie Malin is in charge of the snooker section. He has been a member for 11 years. He said: “We have a nice snooker table in ideal conditions – the best place to play snooker in West Sussex. There is a friendly club atmosphere, with members of ages ranging from 29 to 88.”

The chess and music activities are run independently. Bognor and Arun Chess Club, which meets at the club every Friday, is headed by Bill Partridge. It enjoys superb playing conditions in the concert room, from 7pm-10.30pm, and caters for players of all abilities.

Mr Partridge said: "We are extremely lucky to be able to enjoy playing chess

in this lovely, historic building. It must be one of the best chess-playing venues anywhere.

"We run our own internal competitions and combine with Chichester Chess Club in entering three teams in the Portsmouth League, which gives players an opportunity to face different opponents.

“It all works very well, with members’ ages ranging from 20-somethings to 80-somethings.

"One of our forthcoming initiatives is to encourage children into the game.

We plan to start shortly with a kids’ tournament and then we’ll follow it up with other events.”

Bognor Regis Music Club has held some 15 classical concerts a year in the building since 1978.

Chairman Chris Coote said: “The concert room is particularly popular with chamber groups and singers because of the high ceiling and friendly proportions.

"As well as holding professional concerts, plenty of opportunity is given to members and their contacts to perform on a more informal basis.”

As well as The Bognor Club’s lengthy past, Mrs Wright said its committee was firmly looking to the future.

“We are going to become busier and ‘buzzier’. We could extend the bar. We’ve even had suggestions that we could put on table tennis, yoga or tap dancing.

We’re pretty open-minded but we’ll think carefully.”

The town's In Bloom working group members will now be scouring the seafront on April 12.

They cancelled their original date last month because of bad weather.

The beach-clean will start at 2pm from the promenade bandstand.

Graham's new book success A PAGHAM author's third paperback has been published.

Graham Minett hosted a launch party to celebrate the arrival of Anything For Her on retailers' bookshelves.

Waterstones in Chichester sold all its 50 copies of the paperback on the night.

The 20 copies in stock of each of his first two books were also snapped up.

Graham said: "It was a really nice evening and there was a nice mix of people there - old friends, people I used to teach with and people I have got to know through my books."

Online reviewers have given Anything For Her a positive reaction since its ebook version was published last autumn.

Hajar Benmazhar wrote: "This book was incredibly addictive. I honestly failed to put it down more than once and that’s when I knew I was in for a treat; I wasn’t disappointed.

It follows Graham's first two books, The Hidden Legacy and Lie In Wait, into ebook and paperback formats.

He is about to finish his next story. He said: "My deadline is April 11 and I'm more than 90 per cent of the way through the story.

"I've been working very hard over the past month in particular and I've been flat out most of the days to make the deadline.

"I'm old fashioned in that I don't want to miss my deadline. If I do that, it will only push back all the other stages of getting the book published."

His first draft will undergo several editing stages before the final version is released by his publisher Zaffre Publishing in summer 2019.

Decisions also need to made about the final title and the cover design to make sure they have the maximum impact.

Graham said: "Having a long wait between finishing the first draft and my book being published is a bit strange.

"But I am getting used to it. I finished Anything For Her this time last year.

"Since then, I have been thinking about my latest book apart from the times when I have been talking to a blogger or writing an article for a magazine about Anything For Her." The routine of an author's life is a long way from the time Graham spent in schools.

He worked for 17 years at Felpham and 25 years at the Angmering School before he decided to attend a creative writing course at the University of Chichester.

Church thanks its swimmers WATER baby Kyle Morris was the youngest swimmer when a Bognor Regis church held its latest fundraising challenge.

Kyle was just two years and four months old at the time the Opengate Church staged its 2018 Channel swimathon.

His efforts were recognised on Sunday when he joined the other swimmers for the presentation of their certificates.

Kyle’s mum, Hannah Morris, said her youngest son was joined in the baby pool at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham by her husband, Matthew Morris.

Armed with his water aids, Kyle completed five laps of the pool to achieve a swim of 150m.

“Kyle wanted to join in the swim,” said Hannah. “He knew his brothers were

doing it and he wanted to be involved as well. He was really excited today when he received his certificate.”

She completed 1,100m in the swimathon, Matthew swam the 150m with Kyle, their oldest son, Logan Morris, then aged nine, achieved 1,450m, and Ethan Morris, seven, swam for 625m.

The family raised some £60 towards the £600-£1,000 the challenge is expected to have raised to add some finishing touches to the extension opened last year at the church in Victoria Drive.

Swimathon organiser Simon Whitehead said a total of 42 swimmers took part in the event in February and completed 36.5 miles.

This easily beat the challenge to swim the equivalent distance of the 22-mile

“One of swimmers, a seven-year-old boy, swam 152 laps of the 25m main pool over the two Saturdays of the challenge and even when to hospital with suspected appendicitis in between,” said Simon.

“Another, aged 16, swam 110 laps nonstop. This shows the enthusiasm our church members have.

“Whenever we ask our congregation to help, they are always willing to get involved. It doesn’t matter if it’s for a

good cause overseas, a Christmas dinner for the community or for our extension.

They always rally together and give their support.”

The two-storey extension at the front of the church is used for a children’s nursery on weekdays, a youth club on Wednesdays and Fridays and for community uses such as a foodbank and the Arun Angels street pastors.

This year’s swimathon funded further safety and security work in the building as well as additional furniture.

HUNDREDS of visitors enjoyed finding out more about Bognor Regis over Easter.

The town's museum is celebrating a bumper holiday period.

Its Easter egg hunt for its younger visitors, two of whom are pictured left, has proved popular as they become sleuths to find the eggs among the displays and claim the lollipop prizes.

Bognor Regis Local History Society chairman Greg Burt said on Wednesday: "We really have had a cracking Easter.

"We have had 362 visitors since Good Friday, which is egg-ceptionally good for us.

"The rain did play its part in driving people into the warm, but it just shows how important a varied programme of free-to-enter events is to attract more visitors."

As reported, the West Street museum has several new displays this summer. It is open 10am-4pm, Tuesdays to Sundays and bank holidays.

Fun for Easter

SUSSEX residents have the chance to pose questions to the Sussex police and crime commissioner at a meeting this month.

Written questions are being sought for Katy Bourne ahead of the next meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel on April 27.

Questions can be about any policy issue related to policing in Sussex, but not live cases or operational matters. The deadline for receiving questions is mid-day next Friday.

The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service officers will be staging the practical sessions suitable for employers and employees.

They will be taught vital skills to enable them to cope in emergency situations.

The subjects are management of fire risk assessment, fire wardens and fire extinguishers.

The sessions will be take place in April, May and June, from £60 to £135 a person. They will be held at Worthing Fire Station.

Cadets win awards and plenty of praise TOP CADETS in a Bognor Regis unit have been praised by a retired senior naval officer.

Rear Admiral John Lippiett was guest of honour at the latest presentation evening held by the Nautical Training Corps in the town.

He presented some of the awards and watched as others were handed out at the celebration of those involved with Training Ship Montrose.

Rear Admiral Lippiett, who is the patron of TS Montrose, said: “I am tremendously heartened and impressed by what I have heard. Others struggle to survive in this modern day of competition from many other activities.

“It’s such a joy to me to hear about such a successful organisation. These kids are having an absolutely wonderful experience here and are getting a lot out of it. The most important thing is to have a sense of self-discipline.”

The presentation evening took place at TS Montrose’s usual venue of Rose Green Junior School. It was the seventh occasion to be held since the ship was formed by Commander Graham Turner to join NTC units in Chichester and Littlehampton.

TS Montrose has 17 cadets aged from eight to 18. They enjoy activities like sailing and camping.

The Cadet of the Year Award went to Junior Seaman 1 Amy Bruce for the second time in a row. Amy, 14, has attended TS Montrose for just over a year. “I’m absolutely amazed about this,” she said.

“I won the award last year and I really thought another cadet would win it this year. But I have worked really hard for it.”

She said she helped to organise some of the games for the younger cadets and asked them for their ideas about improving the sessions.

“It’s about seeing the children grow and get used to what they are doing,” she said.

“You can see them improving.”

Leading Seaman Chloe Fowler received her promotion on the night, as well as winning the Best Dress and Turnout Award, pictured below right, and getting a joint share of the Best Entrant Award with her brother, Nathan Fowler.

Chloe, 12, said: “I feel really proud for winning the awards. I enjoy doing the activities here and being with the people.

“I’ve been on three camps and we do really fun activities like rock climbing, canoeing, sailing and hiking.”

Those at the evening also heard from its committee chairman, Garry Price, and commanding officer Paul Nicholls.

Mr Price spoke about the fundraising success of the past year in which £3,428 of donations had been received.

“Without fundraising, we could not put on the various events we need for these cadets to give them the opportunity and to help to make them better people,” he said.

Commodore Andrew Strudwick, who is the NTC’s regional officer, said TS Montrose was average in size among the 18 ships he oversaw from Croydon to Portsmouth and Hastings.

“These evenings to me are not about the badge but about what it means to the person. It’s the satisfaction in seeing them really progress,” he said.

“There can be four cadets getting the same badge and that badge will mean a different thing to each of them depending on their personal circumstances.”

RAF's 100 years celebrated VETERANS and current serving personnel enjoyed an evening of celebration for the RAF centenary last Saturday evening.

THe event was held at RAFA Branch 381 in Waterloo Square in Bognor Regis to mark 100 years of the RAF and included entertainment from THe Diamonds for dozens of guests.

Branch president Ron Flatt said: "I can't think of any prouder moment in any ex-RAF man's life than the one I hold this year.

"THink about what I am about to say, of all the presidents in the past and all the presidents of the future, I am going to be the only one who is here for our 100th year.

"We have an awful lot going on throughout the whole of the 12 months and I beg you to keep your eye on the local papers and the notice boards. We need your support that we think the 100 years deserve.

"If any of the upcoming functions are as well attended as this one is tonight, we are going to finish up in 12 months' time as a very proud club."

Among the guests of the evening was Jack

Tucker-Hawkins, who was an engine fitter in the RAF during the World War Two. Jack said: "A lot of people gave up their lives so we could be here today, so it's important we celebrate this milestone. It's been a wonderful evening.

"When I was about 18, they asked on the radio for people who were good with their hands and my mother said it was just up my street. I thought, as I would get called up before long, I may as well volunteer.

"I was lucky, I had a wonderful war. I came through unscathed so I suppose my memories are coloured by that."

David Evers and his wife of 50 years, Anne, also attended the evening. David was in the merchant service and both Anne's parents were in the Royal Observer corps.

David said: "It's important to remember what the RAF have done for us and our country. It's our heritage."

Anne agreed, saying: "THe younger generations can appreciate it with events like this. People need to remember."

AN ATTEMPT has been made to break in to a property in Climping. A door at the Mant Close property was tampered with between March 25 and April 1 but no entry was gained.

Flying ace Charles to update his memoirs SECOND World War aircrew veteran Charles Gallagher is to publish a new version of his memoirs.

Middleton resident Mr Gallagher will be bringing out the expanded edition of Memories of a Different World this year.

One of his friends, Royal Air Forces Association member David Hewings, said: "Aptly named, it records not just his RAF service, but also the world around at that time in this country, South Africa and India, where he flew after the war until he left the RAF in 1947."

Mr Gallagher, 94, and his wife, Mary,

were among the guests at last Saturday's celebration of the RAF's 100th anniversary held at the Bognor Regis RAFA Club.

THe couple also celebrated 67 years of marriage on the same day. THey have three daughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr Gallagher joined the RAF in 1942, while he was taking a degree course at Cambridge University. After training in South Africa, he qualified as a navigator/ bomb aimer. In January, 1944, aged only 19, he joined an operational training unit in Yorkshire to be able to fly on heavy

bombers.

THe planes would typically have a crew of seven. Mr Gallagher's crew joined 76 Squadron in November, 1944, to fly fourengined Halifax bombers.

THey completed 29 operations over enemy-occupied Europe until the war ended. He was among three of the crew to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for outstanding service.

Mr Hewings added: "He put down the survival and success of the crew to having total trust in each other, comradeship and having a sense of humour."

Bonfire on beach celebrates Easter A BIG bonfire on the beach at Climping early on Easter Sunday welcomed the dawn of the most important day of the year in the Christian calendar.

Some 70 members of all ages of the congregations of St Mary's Church in Yapton, St Mary's Church in Climping and St Andrew's Church in Ford gathered around the fire at 6.30am in what has become an annual tradition.

Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion on Good Friday.

THe Rev Richard Hayes, the rector of all three churches, lit the bonfire on the foreshore and led the singing.

He accompanied the hymns on his guitar.

THis is the 14th year the churches have staged the event.

A food that's so good for you they named it twice AS YOU know, there are tons of amazing so called ‘super foods’ available to us, and they all have various health claims. Camu camu is becoming increasingly popular as a health supplement for its supposed antioxidant properties. But is there something to this rain forest fruit or is it just about the hype?

This isn't a fruit you'll find on a tree or bush

locally unfortunately, as camu camu mostly grows in flooded areas of the Amazon rainforest in Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, where its fruits and leaves are used for medicinal purposes. Its fruits are about the same size as a lemon, but light orange in colour, and full of vitamin C. Natural health claims are that camu camu has anti-viral properties that can help with cold sores, herpes, shingles, and the common cold. Others say it's a natural energy booster that’s amazing for your eyes and gums.

There have not been extensive year-long studies on this super food, but what we do know is Camu camu is stacked full of vitamin C, in fact it contains 60 times more per serving than one orange! A teaspoon of camu camu powder has 1,180 per cent of your recommended daily intake for vitamin C, which is important for gum health, among other functions in our body.

It also contains Valine, which is an essential amino acid, meaning that we must get it in food because our bodies can't produce it. Valine is used by the body to prevent muscle breakdown and is important for nervous system and cognitive function. It also contains potassium, which our

bodies need for the proper functioning of the heart and kidneys. Camu camu is one way to get it: 71.1 milligrams are found in every 100 grams.

It also contains Leucine, which is another essential amino acid, one that our bodies need for muscle and bone tissue growth and recovery and the production of growth hormones.

The amino acid Serine is key for digestion. Serine helps to break down the bonds in proteins and polypeptides so they can be used by our bodies, encouraging better digestive systems, which let's face it, many people need. And guess where you can find this, yes you’ve guessed it - Camu camu.

Camu camu also contains several different flavonoids, which are compounds that are found in plants and are part of what gives fruits and vegetables their beautiful colours. They mostly function in the body as antioxidants, neutralising harmful free radicals. Gallic acid is also found in camu camu, which is good news because it appears to have antifungal and anti-viral properties. It also acts as an anti oxidant too. Ellagic Acid is another acid with antioxidant properties, which is found in this wonder fruit! It's been studied for anti-cancer effects, though research is still very early.

How to take it?

You can include it in your diet in tablet or powder form. The powder can be used to flavour other foods, and camu-flavoured ice creams and drinks are popular in Peru.

When you should avoid it?

There is some concern that Camu camu can interfere with some chemotherapy medications.

You should always let your doctor know about the supplements you are taking, but especially so if you

are receiving chemo, for example.

I will therefore concentrate on said collection this week with two notable exceptions, two wines both priced at a miserly £3.99!

A 2016 Cimarosa Pedro Jimenez white wine from downtown Chile exceeded my expectations, being a fine example of Pedro Ximenez (a grape usually used to make pisco in Chile) and displaying a crisp, citrus fruit character and, though light, a very quaffable number and one that should not disappoint at this steal of a price! Equally, the Italian red wine Montepulciano D'Abruzzo of 2016 vintage is another bargain buy, being smooth, everyday drinking with a morello cherry palate and soft tannins to boot! It is worth aerating for roughly an hour and pairs well with food.

Returning to Lidl's Spring Wine Tour, for an outlay of just £4.99, one can avail oneself of a 2016 Château Dereszla

Amethyst Furmint Tokaji of Hungarian provenance This dryish wine has slightly waxy aromas leading into flavours of baked apple, tangerine and spices along with juicy acidity and a hint of cream on the finish.

Two other white wines priced at £5.99 were a 2016 white Côtes Du Rhône and a Corte Allodola 2016 Soave Classico.

The Les Hauts D'Oriet Côtes Du Rhône is a light rounded wine whose floral and apple notes will appeal to those who

like flowery wines with an added hint of honey.

The Soave Classico from Terre del Vulcano hails from volcanic soils in Veneto adding to its character. There is also a floral element in the nose leading on to tangerine, citrus and apple flavours combined with mouthwatering acidity.

A good summer picnic wine - a veritable mouth-filler with a long aftertaste! My final white wine selection, at the lofty price of £10.99, was that of a

2016 Domaine De Oliveira Petit Chablis which proved to sport a good mineral nose with a stone fruit palate, flavours of citrus, honey with hints of elderflower.

Fruity and easy-drinking and very quaffable!

In terms of red wines, I first happened upon a 2014 Carles Priorat Crianza priced at just £5.99 and this one proved to be an intense red from the hilly appellation of Priorat in mainland Spain with crushed red berry aromas and intense red fruit on the palate.

Good acidity with oaky notes of creamy vanilla make this an interesting buy! For £7.99 the 2015 Domaine Croze Brunet

Vinsobres, a French Rhône wine which, although relatively unknown here, rarely disappoints and this one is no exception with a truly rustic flavour of blackberries coupled with some savoury wild garrigue - well worth a punt!

My final red choice, priced at £9.99, was a Château Tour de Castres 2013 Graves. This wine sported a fruity nose of ripe blackcurrant with smoky, woody aromas with red and black fruit on the palate and a subtle hint of vanilla.

Grippy tannins and balanced acidity characterise this pleasing red and it is one I commend to you! Jusqu' à la prochaine fois!

This is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which cover the start of a new era for its work.

WITH the block paving walkway now laid to the entrance and the cedar shingles almost complete, the Aldingbourne Trust’s conference centre is really beginning to look very special.

Externally,the water mains trench has been dug and the pipe laid. Work on the spacious decking area is at an advanced stage with the steel work complete and the joists and decking due to be fitted over the coming weeks. This area will be a fantastic place to sit and enjoy lunch or coffee and homemade cake in the summer from the trust's superb café.

Some 95 per cent of the structure is now glazed and the heating is on, allowing the building to dry nicely despite the recent best efforts of the ‘Beast from the East’!

Inside, the lift is installed and the internal walls are in place and being plastered. The office ceilings have been fitted with Quattro 40 acoustic plasterboard. This not only improves the sound quality but also reduces echo during phone conversations. The Trust are preparing the spec for the amazing conference facilities that are going to available for all to use.

Sir, I hope that Bognor Regis Town Council, together with Bognor's residents, who have been interested in the promenade design for many years (and who, after all, will be the ones living with it) will be given a chance to contribute design ideas rather than just being told by the district council what's been decided for us.

A Victorian theme was suggested for the seafront many years ago but it has not been adhered to.

I do not agree with the views of Cllr Oppler, who is a district councillor and not a town councillor, that to continue with this theme is the best course of action for the seafront.

I believe that the seafront is the 'jewel of the town and district' and look forward to seeing the investment that will come when the residents and local authorities agree on what the future of the promenade will be and work together to achieve it.

Sir, We have recently moved to East Wittering, pictured below, and have decided to put down roots here. It's a lovely area. I'm an active person and welcome the opportunity to leave the car at home, and I was looking forward to walking to Chichester next to the main road from East Wittering to see how long it would take, and how enjoyable it would be.

That was four months ago. I have since travelled that road enough times to know that walking from here to there is not possible along the shortest route without putting yourself in considerable danger.

Should you drive that route in the dark, you take a risk of meeting people on the road as there's no pavement at all in some places and to ride a bike on that road must be just plain scary.

I decided to walk the most direct safe route that had a footpath away from vehicles and had to follow a coastal footpath that was largely impassible to those of anything less than rude health and ability, which led me to Itchenor and then on to Hunston, then to Chichester train station. It was 22 kilometres, 13-14 miles.

This about twice the distance of using the road, and utterly unsuited for anything more than a ramble.

I have lived and worked in Sweden for the past six years and have seen just how many people use the cycleways there, and pedalling to work is second nature to those near towns and transport hubs.

I am utterly shocked to see that there is no safe unbroken provision of passage for people to take a leisurely bike ride or to cycle to work to Chichester that would take much less than an hour on a dedicated path.

As you drive this route you can see that there is easily enough room to put in a splendid path next to the main road, there's enough verge and scrub to clear for a contraflow cycle route and the removal of the traffic centre hatching and islands from the road would transform the journey.

Extra people on the path means fewer people on the road, and as people already know that there's going to be a jam, wouldn't it be wise to offer a safe alternative to sitting in a car and contribute to making everybody's day worse?

I would very much like to see this implemented. It can't be a huge cost but the benefits would be felt by everybody in the area, and it meets all the criteria in the introduction to the council's walking and cycling strategy 2016-2026, David Addison, East Wittering

Sir, I am in agreement with one of your readers regarding dog licences. Yes, there has been a huge increase in dog ownership in recent decades and a licence fee would be justified for several reasons: 1 - It would make people think more carefully about their responsibilities to the animal before buying a cute puppy that will need a lot of commitment; 2 - A financial contribution is fair as there is a big cost in providing dog bins, emptying them and disposing of the contents. Why should non-dog owners have to contribute to this?

3 - There is the further issue of cleaning up the mess all around our streets, parks, beachfront promenades and beaches as well.

China items are reminders of smashing time Enterprising manufacturers produced souvenirs for holidaymakers I EXPECT many of you will have purchased a souvenir of your holiday destination, as many of the traders try to entice you with their own particular item. They will be trying to sell us various souvenirs by which to enrich the memories of our holidays, including postcards, china, T-shirts and mugs. The thought of this made me look back historically to what was previously was available for the holidaymaker.

The Times in 1910 stated that the ‘collectors instinct seems to be a curious by-product of the human mind'.

An interesting comment of more than 100 years ago, but what did people actually collect?

It was during the Victorian and Edwardian times between the 1890s to 1930 that seaside visitors would generally return home with a keepsake of their holiday – typically in the form of a piece of crested-china.

Historically, this has been classed as the most popular seaside souvenir ever produced, unless you know different! In the late 1800s, this form of trade was known either as a ‘trifle from’ or seaside ware.

There was one famous name that always seems to encapsulate this type of china - that of William Henry Goss, who, with his sons, led this field. It was in the 1880s that Adolphus Goss, who was a traveller for the company

of WH Goss, stumbled on the idea of placing town crests on to pieces of china. His father, William Henry, had already developed fine ivory porcelain pots and shapes and, therefore, to combine the two would produce an ideal souvenir.

Before the First World War it was common to arrive at any home and find a cabinet full of these small pieces of china. The mantelpiece or sideboard was also covered in these knick-knacks to bring back fond memories of holiday visits, either to the seaside or any place other than your own hometown.

Travel, of course, was not widespread so the holiday could have even been to the next town or village, so a memento was important of any journey away from home.

The idea of these small pieces of china soon increased so that various shapes were developed like eggcups, shoes and animals.

Originally, towns would have a shape that was specific to them. For Bognor, this was to be the lobster pot. However, this ‘one town, one shape,’ limited the number of sales.

The traders began to request a variety of shapes, with their own crests. The idea being to bring the visitor back time and time again and, eventually, a variety of shapes became available in shops. Hence, we can have lighthouses from resorts where none exist, or

bathing machines in the centre of the country.

It was the shape and crest that were then important. Other companies soon became involved in this trade, many of which were in Europe. However, the standard of items they produced was not of the high standard of William Goss.

The number and range of items on sale was boundless, and is now the subject of many books, research projects and local historian talks. Each piece of china that is found is lovingly looked at but also when a piece of china is turned over you may find that it was actually made – locally.

Here, in Bognor Regis, it is possible to find a number of pieces made showing either ‘Piper,’ ‘S Piper Bognor’ or ‘T Piper Bognor’.

The Piper family had a couple of shops in the Arcade and the High Street where they would display windows full of all manner of pieces of china - plates, cups and saucers. In 1929, there were a number of cups and places that were produced for S Piper complete with pictures of Craigweil House. This was the year that King George V came here to recuperate.

Definitely a case of cashing in on an event – even in 1929.

As trade increased, so production methods improved, allowing companies to produce more elaborate items for the season. Styles became more definitive, such as the Torquay Pottery, which produced items in its own distinctive red clay. Designs varied but each piece would clearly indicate from which town it had been purchased. This company also produced more useful items, so that it was possible to buy the likes of teapots and jugs for use when the visitor returned home.

Other styles include the famous ribbon plates, which were manufactured from the 1880s but continued to be popular for many years. These were produced with a pierced border through which ribbons were threaded.

Other useful items such as bread plates were made and inscribed not only with a place name, but also very often with a religious text.

Just recently, a woman phoned me to ask if there had been a pottery in Bognor, as she had a small item which had the word Bognor on the base. The answer was yes and Mr Masters, who resided in Lyon Street, produced it.

His china was quite distinctive in style many pieces are brown, with green leaves and hops. He had started work in Rye in East Sussex and when he came to Bognor he started work by producing these items, the green depicting hops, a memory for him of his time in Kent, the hop growing area. He died at the age of 83 in 1962.

This is a very wide and deep subject, and I know that I have only scratched the surface here, but today there are so many collectors that it would be impossible to cover the subject comprehensively. Needless to say, when you are on your travels, have a look in antique shops, junk shops and car boot sales for these little gems. Remember also that there may be items with older members of the family.

Today, collecting can be a rewarding experience, although it can also be expensive.

Above all, it is enjoyable. Try and collect types, crests, manufacturers, or whatever while learning of its derivation. I hope you can enjoy these ‘little pieces of china in strange shapes’ as I do.

Volunteer Museum Guide – The Novium museum The Novium’s mission is to act as the official custodian of Chichester district’s heritage, to preserve and promote it, to provide as many local people and visitors as possible with an inspiring gateway for learning and discovery and to develop innovative heritage resources that will benefit communities of the present and the future. They are looking for volunteers who enjoy talking to people and have an interest in local history and/or museums to welcome visitors to The Novium Museum and respond to any of their needs. Activities will include: meeting visitors to The Novium Museum and tourist information centre, providing short 20 minute highlight tours of the museum, helping to maintain and organise the interpretative resources for the Museum and information factsheets for use in the tourist information centre and helping to keep the shop, tourist information area and museum clean and presentable.

Fundraiser – The Phoenix Snak Shak Ltd The Phoenix Snak Shak was set up for the benefit of the young people in the Manhood peninsula area; especially, but not exclusively, in contact with existing

It is not a youth club with organised activities, but somewhere more casual for young people to meet with their friends. Ski star Yasmin is 'over the moon' PostSport after her national downhill success TEEN ski sensation Yasmin Cooper is all smiles after sealing a national title win.

The 19-year-old from Chichester has seen her training take her to all corners of the globe this winter.

But all that hard work paid off when she sailed home in first place in the Downhill event of the British National Championships.

Yasmin, who took part as an under-21 competitor, was more than half a second quicker than any of her rivals, who included a number of senior racers.

The former Chichester High School for Girls pupil followed that up with third place in the Super G. Throw in gold medals in the National Junior Downhill and Super G competitions, as well as fourth in the Giant Slalom, and it was an eventful week in the French Alps for the talented skier.

Speaking after the race, she said: "Three years ago I crashed in the Tignes Downhill and said 'I’m never doing that again'. Today I finished it as the British National Downhill Champion and came first overall. Over the

moon is an understatement."

It was an excellent way to round off the 2017 campaign for the skier who still harbours international ambitions Yasmin started out the season in Chile before heading to Canada, where she stayed for more than a month before Christmas.

Since the turn of the year, much of the winter was spent in Europe with competitions across Italy, Switzerland and France.

She remains in the Alps at the moment, finishing off the national competitions before returning to Chichester for the summer.

Writing on her Facebook page before the National Championships, Yasmin wrote: "The 2018 Winter Season has been going really well for me! After my trip to Canada competing in North American Cups I have been based in Aosta, Italy, with the British Ski Academy focusing on my training and racing.

"Since January, I have achieved PBs in Alpine Combined, Super G, Downhill and Slalom, as well as winning the Overall English Super G Title and getting three overall podiums in Super G this season."

Blues regroup ahead of season's run-in

CHICHESTER RFC hope to finish 2018 on a high after a new year slump all but ended their promotion hopes.

Scott Ashley's side head to Maidstone tomorrow (2pm) for the first of three matches to round off the season.

A single win from those matches against sides in the bottom six will seal Blues a top four finish in London One South.

But the hierarchy at Oaklands Park may be thinking what could have been as their injuryhit side struggled to string positive results together at the turn of the year.

Since January, Blues have won just three of nine matches - a run which ended any hopes of an immediate return to National League action.

Their rivals on the other hand have kept on winning, with CS Rugby, Medway and Havant now well out of touch at the top of the table.

Blues' focus is now on securing that top four finish in the 14-team division.

With Chi having Easter weekend off, Ashley's side have had time to regroup ahead of the final

three matches of the campaign.

Even with two matches away from Oaklands Park, Chi's run in looks favourable on paper with all their remaining games against sides in the bottom six.

However, they must look to bounce back after suffering a 29-15 defeat away at second-place Medway last time out.

Bognor RFC will be hoping to end their season on a high as they welcome Isle of Wight to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (3pm).

The Purple and Greens have sealed second spot in Hampshire One after a convincing victory over Alesford in their last match.

While they still have two matches left, Bognor are now ten points behind unbeaten league leaders United Services Portsmouth, which means they have to all but settle for the runners up spot.

With the visitors languishing in the bottom half, the Purple and Greens will believe they can put in a performance in front of their home fans.

DARTS: QE2's Jack Danahar cruised to victory in the first ever Grand Slam Knockout of the Bognor Double In Double Out Darts League.

More than 40 players took part in the event at Newtown Social Club which is seen as a season finale to the competitive season. In previous years, the league played a team knockout, but many people didn't like playing 6-a-side.

So this year, the team knockout was replaced with the 'Pete May' Grand Slam knockout, where every round would be re-drawn.

After three rounds of hard-fought action, the semi-finals were made up of Ben Lubbe (Friary Arms) and Andy Cooper (Cabin Cruisers) while Richard Ragless (QE2) took on his teammate Danahar. Both Lubbe and Danahar outclassed their opponents with some high scoring to make it through to the showdown.

The 'best-of-5' final saw Lubbe win the bullseye, and start with a 98 in-shot, while Danahar missed the in-shot with his first throw. Lubbe kept in the lead all the way to the double and sealed the leg with an 80 out-shot.

The second leg saw a quick leg from Danahar, taking it to 1-1. Leg 3 saw a 140 from Danahar, but two tons from Lubbe.

Danahar missed double 16 for a 106 outshot, but he managed to finish the leg with his next throw.

The 4th leg saw both players match each other's scores. But, with 67 left, Danahar hit single 17, single 18 and double 16 to take the leg, and the win, becoming the first 'Pete May' Grand Slam Champion.

DARTS: Friary Z's Rob Collins showed that three can be the magic number after winning the Benevolent Cup for the third time.

Collins defeated team mate and 2011/12 winner Richard Ragless in the final of the competitive competition which featured more than 50 players at the Newtown Social Club.

Ragless went into the final in good form having seen off 2007/08 champion Simon Edwards (Richmond B) and Lewis Kalli (QE2 Galleon) with a series of high scores.

He continued this scoring in the final starting with 123 followed by a 140.

Collins started slowly, but eventually hit a ton followed by 125. After Ragless failed to hit a 100 out-shot, Collins hit an 85 out-shot to take the first leg in 18 darts.

The second leg was close as well, with Collins hitting a ton, and Ragless hitting two tons. Collins hit 98 to leave double top, and Ragless hit one of the tons to leave 49. Collins missed the double with the first dart, but used the other two to take the second leg in 21 darts.

Leg three saw a slower game from Ragless, while Collins was steady, hitting a ton on his second throw. Collins hit 99 to leave 74, then Ragless hit a ton to leave 152. Collins went for the bull and hit 25, and, after hitting another 25, then missed double 12. He had another chance on his next throw but left 12.

With 111 left, Ragless hit treble 20 and single 11, but the last dart was sitting the wrong side of double top.

Collins then stepped up, and with his second dart hit double 6 to take the third leg, and his third Benevolent Cup Champions title.

Lions should 'fear nothing' PAGHAM joint-boss Tom Simmonds says his Lions having 'nothing to fear' as they prepare for a top-of-the-table clash tomorrow.

The Nyetimber Lane side have shown their courage and fighting spirit in recent weeks, striking late twice to seal two much-needed victories in the hunt for the SCFL Premier crown.

The most recent came last weekend when James Thurgar hit home in injury time to seal a remarkable comeback against AFC Uckfield.

Those three points lifted the Lions to top spot, something they relinquished when their Easter Monday derby against Chichester was postponed.

Next up is a visit from fellow title challenger Saltdean United tomorrow (3pm) before mid-table Broadbridge Heath come to Nyetimber Lane on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Simmonds said: "Saltdean are a good side and we had to work really hard to beat them earlier in the season so it will be another tough game.

But our recent form has been good, so we'll go into it with nothing to fear.

"If we're at our best, I think we'll win the game."

Second-placed Pagham go into the double header on a high after sealing a remarkable comeback from 3-1 down against struggling Uckfield.

Dan Simmonds' second goal reduced the arrears before Ryan Davidson equalised with ten minutes to go.

Then, with time ticking down, Thurgar struck home from inside the area to spark wild celebrations.

Coming hot on the heels of a similar comeback against Newhaven a fortnight ago, the Lions management team of Simmons and Richie Hellen are full of praise of their young side.

Simmonds said: "They have been special.

"If you're lucky, you have a comeback like that once every couple of years but to do it twice in seven days has been amazing.

"When the going gets tough this group never throw the towel in.

"They are all really close off the pitch and I think that shows on it. I have to give them massive credit for never knowing when they are beat and we've got our just rewards for that over the last couple of games."

CHICHESTER City's frustrations with the weather continue as the rain hindered their promotion hopes.

Heavy deluges over the Easter weekend saw both of the Lillywhites' matches postponed during the traditionally busy period.

With other sides in the hunt for the SCFL Premier title picking up points, Chi have slipped down to sixth, four points behind league leaders Haywards Heath, albeit with a game in hand.

Miles Rutherford's side did put some of that frustration behind them on Wednesday when they beat Loxwood 5-0 at home, with Jimmy Wild, Kaleem Haitham, Scott Jones (2) and Dave Herbert getting the goals.

That cut the gap at the top. With things so tight there, Chi know they can afford no major slip-ups. City have six matches left in the SCFL Premier season, starting tomorrow away at seventh-placed Peacehaven & Telscombe (3pm). Then they return to Oaklands Park to host relegation-threatened Hassocks on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

With four of those remaining fixtures at home - including two massive matches against immediate rivals Three Bridges and Haywards Heath - their fate rests in their own hands.

Sids' boss has faith in squad Ne

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce believes his young squad have what it takes to secure his side's long-awaited return to senior football next season.

The manager and his fellow backroom staff have been working hard on and off the pitch to ready his side for step six on nonleague football.

But with a month of the season to play, the Sids are fifth, eight points behind league leaders Rustington.

All is not lost, though, as Pearce's side still have nine games to play, meaning they can

close the gap on the sides above them.

The manager said: "We're not in too bad a position. We have got a reasonable sized squad and some excellent under 18s coming through.

"We're just looking to do as well as we can and take maximum points from every match we take part in.

"Obviously we'd like to be a little bit higher. It's down to the lads now. " We've prepared them right and its over to them to try and carry on with our unbeaten run into the last eight or nine matches."

Saturday's 2-0 victory over Montpelier Villa was Sids' first match in four weeks as goals from Tom Atkinson and Jake Goulding secured the victory.

The Sids face a double header in the next week, hosting Alfold tomorrow (3pm) before making the short trip to Littlehampton's St Flora Sportsfield to play Clymping (7.30pm).

In SCFL Division One, Selsey's slide continues as the Blues' winless run rolls on.

Steve Bailey's side suffered a 2-1 loss away at Bexhill last weekend, making it five defeat in a row.

With two matches to come in the next four days, Selsey will hope to get that winning feeling again in order to secure a top half finish.

First up is a match at St Francis Rangers tomorrow (3pm) to face a side who they are level on points with. Then there is a trip to fourth-bottom Storrington on Tuesday (7.45pm).

In SCFL Division Two, Bosham will be looking to bounce back into action after the weather frustrated their diminishing title hopes over Easter.

The sixth-placed Robins have won six in a row in all competitions but look to have left it too late to launch a charge on the league crown.

Next up is a home clash against Clymping at Walton Lane tomorrow (3pm).

City's skipper aims for a strong finish CHICHESTER City Ladies skipper Emma Alexandre believes the club will need to pull together to ensure a strong finish.

The Oaklands Park side have performed extremely well in their first season at the third tier of women's football.

After a 1-0 victory over Gillingham last time out, Chi sit seventh in the 12-team league.

But the weather and fixture schedule against them, Matt Wright's side still have seven matches to play, the first of which is not until April 15, away at Coventry City.

With the games coming thick and fast after then, the captain wants to see her teammates work together to finish strong.

Alexandre said: “The difference in that second-half against Gillingham was that

players were willing to work hard off the ball to give options to the player on the ball.

“We have got a very tough run to the end of the season but when we come together and play like a team I think we can beat anyone.”

Off the field, City continue to make progress ahead of the restructure of the ladies' game this summer. Just a few weeks after appointing Alan Crozier as the club's general manager, Rob Kerr has become its business manager.

The pair are tasked with taking Chi into the newly-named FA Women's Championship, which will be the second tier of the national game. Kerr knows the city and the club's role in the community through his work at youth level, will be tasked with working with the club's sponsors and commercial partners.

Rocks' drop all but sealed as team is felled by Sussex rivals Next Game

GLOUCESTER C (A) 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce vows that his side will keep fighting to the end despite the Rocks relegation fears being all but confirmed.

A heavy 3-0 defeat at Sussex rivals Eastbourne Borough on Easter Monday leaves the Nyewood Lane side 13 points adrift with just seven matches to go.

With the Rocks winning just four matches in the National South all season, even the most optimistic Nye Camp regular will admit a great escape is off the cards.

Matches against Gloucester City away tomorrow (3pm) before a home game against St Albans City on Tuesday (7.45pm) give Bognor a double chance of getting over their derby defeat.

But, even with 21 points still on the table, Pearce says thoughts are already turning to next season when the Rocks will be back in the Isthmian Premier.

Speaking after the match, the veteran manager said: "While we are not mathematically relegated just yet on paper, it does look as though we are down.

"We will keep on fighting in every game and try and win as many points as we can."

Monday's defeat to Boro was the fifth in a row for a Rocks side who have been fighting for their lives since the autumn.

Just one league win in five months, though, has not been good enough as Pearce's side

have found that a failure to score goals has cost them dear.

The Boro match followed the pattern of many in the National South this season Rocks dominated much of the match but could not convert their chances.

They started on the front foot, piling on the pressure and forcing three corners in the opening eight minutes.

But it was the hosts who took the lead against the run of play when Shaun Okojie blasted into the roof of the net from close range.

Jamie Taylor doubled the lead after the re-start and, despite the Rocks pushing forward, it was ex-Rock Gavin McCallum who rounded off the scoring on the hour mark.

Attention now switches to a busy end of the season before the end of the month.

The number of postponements in recent weeks caused by the frequent downpours has led to a situation where the games come thick and fast for Bognor.

This week's double header is the start of seven games in three weeks, which includes the Cheltenham City game originally planned for Good Friday before it fell victim to the bad weather.

Pearce said: "We all have personal pride at stake so it's important that the team keep on playing for our fantastic fans."

So ended the match report on the official Eastbourne Borough FC website after the Rocks lost 3-0 at their Sussex rivals on Easter Monday. It was just two days after Bognor sealed promotion to the National South that Howell said he was leaving Nyewood Lane.

Speaking afterwards, the former Arsenal trainee made clear the decision was made with a heavy heart, but he had been presented with an offer he could not turn down.

There were very few Rocks fans who resented Howell making the move. After years of squeezing every last drop out of a tight-knit squad, most felt he deserved a new start on enhanced financial terms.

But Howell's departure triggered an eventful summer at Nyewood Lane which ended with general manager Jack Pearce reluctantly taking charge once again. Players within the squad defend Pearce to the hilt, praising his modern approach to the game and the positivity that he brings to the dressing room.

But Howell's appearance on the touchline on Monday, in a different dugout, would have reminded Rocks fans of far happier days.

IT'S FAIR to say the past month or so has not gone as well as we planned.

Following the loss away at Eastbourne Borough, that’s pretty much it for this season.

While we may not be mathematically relegated just yet, the simple truth is we are down.

There’s been nothing of note for us to hold on to in recent weeks, no glimmer of hope and I can't see that changing.

The problems have been clear to most - we have been so counter productive in their box and have been giving things away in our own.

I don't think you can pinpoint things down to a single issue but little things have jumped out.

If you look at Monday's game we were two-nil down and Ibra did really well to spin his defender and get through on goal.

He runs through to a tight angle but could not convert.

Then the ball went up the other end, Keaton Wood gives the ball away and they score to make it 3-0. Episodes like that have been happening in every game of the last month or so.

We have played really well but conceded sloppy goals in every game. The sad fact is that Eastbourne was a real chance for us to pick up a positive result, especially as their home form is worse than ours.

We’re just not clinical enough, though, and the final ball is just not right.

I don’t want to single people out but we have got the ball in good positions but there has been nothing in the box as it seems like as a team we are resigned to the fact we can’t score.

From a personal point of view, standing on the sidelines, it is frustrating as there's nothing I can do about it.

At times, I'd go as far to say that it is embarrassing that I have to sit and watch.

There are no positives really to take out of Monday's match apart from the fact that Gary Charman started for first time in

a while.

I think only he and Harvey Whyte came off the pitch with their heads held high.

For a manager, that must be frustrating. I know Jack is having a bad time of it of late and that is understandable as in football the buck stops with the manager.

But really, the blame should be with the players as they are the ones on the pitch.

Jack has been open and transparent with the players; he has tried his best to get people in and picked from the best he has had.

Of course, it's only natural that some may think what could have been if Jamie Howell had stayed on as manager rather than leaving for Eastbourne.

We all knew that losing Jamie as well as James Fraser and Darren Budd would be tough after last season.

Jamie did wonders for me personally as a player and it was nice to see him after the match.

He did admit the results had not been the best at his new team but he was very complimentary of me and the club.

I heard there was a bit of a disagreement between him and Dabber at the end of the match but I think it was something out of nothing really.

Thoughts now must turn to next year. We have a long trip to Gloucester tomorrow and I think on the way back a few of the lads will start talking about next season.

It is incredibly tough to go down and come back again so we will need some big characters, otherwise it will be a difficult season.

One thing that is unsettling for us all is the unknown - we don’t know who the manager is or who else will be at the club. But the aim for the next few weeks is for the management team to get players signed on while the players try and give something back to the fans.

It's important we try and put in some positive performances, score some goals, get a few results and try and enjoy them before rebuilding for next year.
