Mr Smith, Tourism South East's chief executive, has called on councillors to support the ambitious £80m plans by the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

Election information sessions to be held for county hopefuls BRIEFINGS are being held for potential county councillors from the Bognor Regis area.

THe information sessions will be staged by Arun District Council next month.

THe elections for all 70 electoral divisions of West Sussex County Council are due to be held on May 4.

Anyone who is thinking of standing to seek the electors' support has been invited by the deputy county returning officer to find out more about what is required to formally put their name forward.

THe briefings will take place at

4.30pm on February 8 and at 6pm on February 23 at the Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton.

A spokeswoman for Arun District Council said: "Prospective candidates and their agents will be able to find out more about the timetable for the election process, local arrangements for the Arun district and will be able to pick up a nomination pack.

Worshippers hope to gain lottery grant WORSHIPPERS at Pagham's parish church are hoping heritage experts will answer their prayers for a new roof.

THe congregation members of St THomas a'Becket Church have submitted a bid for about £200,000 to the Heritage Lottery Fund to help to pay for replacements for the damaged tiling.

THey do not expect an outcome for several months and will be continuing to fundraise in the meantime to bring in much-needed donations to go towards the £250,000 Raise the Roof Appeal.

THe Rev Mark Eminson, the church's vicar, pictured above in the Pagham Pram Race, said: "THe appeal is going quite nicely and donations keep coming in. We are being backed by all members of the community from the young to the old and from individuals to businesses.

"We also have several events planned for later this year to raise more money and I'm hopeful we will reach our target.

"Our churchwarden and treasurer spent hours and hours pouring over all the details of our application to the heritage fund, meeting architects and going through several drafts."

THe appeal was officially launched just over 100 days ago in the church, in Church Lane, which dates back some 800 years.

It is needed because a survey last year showed an increasing number of tiles were falling down the roof. Some began to fall off, meaning safety railing had to be installed to protect church-goers.

THousands of tiles need to be replaced on the main chancel roof and above the side aisles.

About £35,000 had been raised so far towards the expensive renewal work, said Mr Eminson. It is hoped the repairs will be carried out by the end of next year.

Failure to act risks putting the heritage of the church, including the Norman font and a bell cast in 1666, at risk.

"THere's been an amazing response," he said. "Pagham Playgroup, which meets at the church centre, have raised money to buy tiles.

"THe classes at Rose Green Infant School are doing the same and Southern Co-operative in the area has the church as one of its two local good causes to support. THat means we are getting a whole range of donations."

THe first main fundraising event planned for 2017 to bring in further money will be an auction.

THe church stands on a site of one built by the Saxons 1300 years ago on land given by Caedulla, the King of Wessex, to St Wilfrid for saving people from hunger.

Plan set for decision

"THe good news, of course, is Bognor retains two important unique selling points - namely, a record of excellent climate year on year, and its key location on the coast, with access to 15-18m within a couple of hours' drive and train routes."

Next Wednesday's meeting of the council's development control committee will be a key moment in

the two-and-a-half year history of the privately funded Sir Richard Hotham Project. It follows a rejection last March of the committee of the scheme's original version. THose four reasons which led to the decision - safe road access, failure to meet regeneration guidelines, lack of affordable housing and extra pressure on the surrounding area - have been overcome by the project.

Arun planning officer Claire Potts tells the committee in her report: "Undoubtedly, the scheme will enhance the sites compared to what is currently on each site, and there are wider regeneration benefits...which have considerable weight as they will further the core regeneration aims for Bognor Regis.

"Overall, it is considered that, while the proposal has missed some opportunities to achieve a design that would achieve

excellence in terms of responding to and integrating with the local surroundings, this is outweighed by the contribution that the proposal would make in improving the viablity and vitality of the town centre."

But she adds the decision is finely balanced and the committee could refuse permission if its members believed the scheme was poorly designed.

Mr Elliott's spokesman, Paul Rumke, said: "Achieving planning permission is the first major hurdle for us to overcome.

"It is good to get the backing of Nigel Smith. He knows everything there is to know about tourism in this region.

"He remembers Bognor Regis in the past, has a soft spot for the town, and he wants to get those days back again.

"He is completely neutral of us and just wants the town to thrive.

"We really believe that this is the best way to create the town as a tourism destination again, create jobs and bring more business in," said Mr Rumke.

"THere are 56 conditions suggested for the planning permission to control what we can and cannot do. We expected that and we are happy to work within them."

RETAIL, food, cafes and leisure activities lik a virtual golf course and a climbing wall are proposed for the Regis Centre site by the Sir Richard Hotham Project.

THere will also be a 64 bedroom hotel, a pub/restaurant and 192 flats. An arts centre is included as well. THere will be a 335 space car park.

For Hothamton, the plans concern a 1,100 seat theatre, a 48 bedroom hotel and two shops. A 477 space car park will be provided on six floors - three above and three below ground.

A 200 cover restaurant, pictured left, is proposed for the skate park on the former Esplanade THeatre site opposite the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

Built with a domed roof, it will also have a terrace for 60 covers. THe skate park will be moved along THe Esplanade and three kiosks built on the seafront as well.

It is intended to build the new theatre first followed by the Regis Centre's demolition and the construction of the boardwalk. Next would come the kiosks and then the new restaurant.

Candidate is selected by Lib Dems for next general election LIBERAL Democrat Francis Oppler has vowed to oppose major housing schemes if he is the next MP for Bognor Regis .

Francis has been chosen as his party's candidate for the next general election.

THe election is not due until 2020 but the Lib Dems have decided to get ready in case the Prime Minister, THeresa May, decides to go to the polls early.

It will be the second time Francis has opposed the sitting Conservative MP, Nick Gibb. He said he was ready for the battle for votes among the town's residents and to carry on his opposition as a district and county councillor to the large housing developments proposed for the area and the planned closures of public toilets.

"I am delighted to have been selected again to fight my home constituency, something I am proud of.

"Locally, Liberal Democrats have a strong record of standing up for the community and fighting for the rights of residents," he said.

"It is vital that all politicans listen to the community and act on what they say. Unlike the current MP, I am not a professional politician and I really do understand the day to day struggles we

all have. In the past, I have experienced being made redundant and being unemployed."

Members of his party in the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton constituency were looking forward to the polling as part of the Lib Dem fightback after the 2015 election.

He said he was proud of his party's work in the 2010-15 coalition with the Tories and pointed to the raising of the income tax threshold and extra money for schools.

Francis, 55, of Marshall Avenue, has lived in the constituency all his life.

He has been a councillor for 28 years and served twice as the town mayor of Bognor Regis. On the first occasion, in 1992, he was the youngest mayor in the country.

Former Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Cllr Dr James Walsh said: "I have known Francis for over 29 years.

He has worked tirelessly for residents in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, particularly on housing, environmental, transport and social issues."

THe 2015 general election saw Francis finish fourth - with 4,240 votes or nine per cent - as the surge of UKIP took it into second place behind Mr Gibb.

` Court decision on Europe is criticised UKIP'S parliamentary spokesman for Bognor Regis has vowed to fight against this week's court judgment about the Euro referendum.

Graham Jones said the decision of the Supreme Court to enable MPs to have a say in Britain's exit from the EU was disappointing.

"We cannot allow the will of the people during the referendum to be overturned by this chicanery and UKIP will continue to fight this injustice."

Matters such as 'Hard Brexit' or 'Soft Brexit' were not mentioned in the build-up to the voting.

"THese are descriptions which have come out after we voted, promoted mainly by those who wanted to remain in the EU. "THere was no mention that unelected judges would have a say in all this after we voted."

Mr Jones, who is UKIP's parliamentary spokesman for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, is also Felpham's county councillor.

Last June's referendum saw 56,936 vote to leave Europe - about 62 per cent - of those who took part.

He said it was time for the town's MP, Nick Gibb, to come clean about his intentions towards Europe and tell his constituents he will support the triggering of Article 40 of the Lisbon Treaty - signalling the start of Britain's formal exit from the EU when it comes to the Commons for ratification.

"If he is not prepared to do so, he must issue a public statement explaining why he will not do so," added Mr Jones.

Town rail route is subject of report CRUCIAL talks to settle the bitter rail strike will feature a report about the Bognor Regis rail link.

THe town's route to Horsham was the subject of a study by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on the impact of trains leaving stations after the drivers have operated their doors using CCTV screens.

Changes have been recommended by the regulator to ensure the driver-only operation is as safe as possible.

"THe inspector found that the quality of CCTV images varied but all were adequate, " the ORR's report stated.

"A recommendation has, however, been made to GTR-Southern to make improvements so that image quality is consistently high, including immediate improvement in the cleaning regime of external camera lenses.

"THe ORR also noted that the planning and notification ahead of the route becoming DOO dispatch did not appear to be well communicated."

THe opening and closing of the doors has caused nine months of disruption to Southern Railway services across its network. THe row began with the RMT union, which represents many of the conductors who will see their role operating the doors taken away, and spread to the train drivers' union, Aslef.

Aslef's decision to suspend its second set of three strike days this week has led to talks with Southern Railway hosted by the conciliation service, Acas, and the TUC. Tuesday saw the first normal timetable in operation for at least six months after Southern Railway initially scrapped some services for an emergency timetable.

THe ORR published its report about the dispute this month.

An ORR railways operations specialist inspector carried out tests, alongside a driver, between Bognor Regis and Horsham. THese studies took place during the day and night on 377 class trains.

THat section of the route to London has seen DOO operation brought in by Southern against the unions' wishes.

THe ORR inspector also said Southern and Network Rail should extend the provision of close door and right away indicators on stations that are staffed, where appropriate, to improve train leaving those locations.

Lighting at stations where it was below the standard needed for driver-only doors had to be replaced, or station staff used, before DOO came into effect. Sightlines along trains were also tested. Any safety failures which featured foilage or other matters were solved, the report said.

Ian Prosser, the HM Chief Inspector of Railways, said: "Following a thorough review of GTR-Southern's method and implementation of driver-only operation, ORR is satisfied that with suitable equipment, proper procedures and competent staff in place, it is a safe method of working."

Further inspections would take place.

Action would be taken if there was evidence of a breach of health and safety regulations, the ORR stated.

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said the report showed Southern's claims about the safety of DOO could only be achieved if a series of improvements was made before the practice went ahead.

Students visit special school for lessons in communication SIXTH form students at Felpham Community College swapped classrooms as part of their course.

THe health and social pupils showed their community spirit by helping at St Anthony's Special School in Chichester.

THe sixth formers have been studying how positive relationships are built and visited the school to try out some of their communication skills on the youngsters.

One of the students involved, Hayley Moses, said: "We worked with Years 3 and 4 and supported them in their music and food technology lessons."

Her fellow sixth former, Lauren Jones, said: "It was nice to help them with their tasks and get involved with what they were doing.

"It helped us show that positive relationships really help when communicating with people.

"Hopefully, we will have more field trips soon to practise what we are learning on our course.

Writers protest about homes SCORES of residents attended a protest session about hundreds of homes planned for Pagham.

Upwards of 70 people went along to the letter-writing event and coffee morning held by the Pagham and Aldwick Greenfield Movement (PAGAM).

THree handed in letters to be submitted on their behalf to Arun District Council.

THe others were believed to be compiling their objections at home to add to the 175

which Arun had entered on its website before last Saturday's occasion.

A petition against the housing reached 1,300 names by the end of the event.

Jean Buttery, 71, of Barton Close, was among those who went along to Pagham United Reformed Church to find out more.

She said: "I don't think there's room for all these houses. THe traffic on Pagham Road is dreadful.

"It's really difficult driving out of Pagham

because there are cars parked all over the place. THere's big lorries going to the farms and nurseries - I don't object to them - but they are an added hazard.

"If they built a 1,000 houses here, and if those cars use Pagham Road, it will make conditions a lot more serious."

Mrs Buttery, a Pagham resident for seven years, said she was also worried about the impact of so many extra homes on flooding and on the local nature reserve at Pagham Harbour.

At present, Taylor Wimpey has submitted plans for 250 homes in Sefter Road and Hanbury Properties wants 600 dwellings on fields south of Summer Lane. Another two potential large developments in the area are also believed to be likely.

THe Green resident Kerenza Holzman, 47, said: "I don't think it's sensible to take the fields away. Agriculture is massive around here and we need to grow food to feed the people who live here.

"If these houses are built, the people who live in them will not have jobs here and will have to travel to work.

"THe doctors' surgery here is already full. It can take me three weeks to get an appointment. What's another 2,000 people going to do to that situation?

"THese schemes are only small to the companies behind them. But, to us, they are massive and we can't possibly accommodate them."

THose who went along to the event were given guidelines about the relevant objections about the current schemes to make to Arun. THey included highways safety and traffic, flood risk, impact on the appearance of the area and the need to safeguard the countryside.

` Sexual assault of woman on seafront WITNESSES are being sought by police to a sexual assault on Bognor Regis seafront.

A 19-year-old woman was attacked by a man while she sat on a bench on THe Esplanade.

THe incident happened about 12.20am last Saturday.

THe woman was shaken by the experience but was not physically injured.

PC Emma Jeacock said: "We would like to trace anyone who might have helped the woman after the incident, and anyone who spoke to staff at nearby Sheikhs nightclub about it."

A man from Bognor Regis, aged 24, was arrested on suspicion of committing sexual assault. After being interviewed, he was released on police bail until February 16.

` Appeal after Yapton accident A MOTORCYCLIST was taken to hospital with a broken leg after a collision in Yapton.

THe 23-year-old man was riding a red Suzuki motorcycle which was in collision with a blue X-Type Jaguar in Burndell Road close to its junction with Rollaston Park at 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Work starts on houses NEW council houses are being built in Bognor Regis for the first time since the nineties.

Work on the construction of the pair of fourbedroom properties is underway on the Glenlogie site in Clarence Road.

THey will help Arun District Council to provide affordable homes for people around the district.

It has chosen Brymor Construction as its contractor for the scheme which marks a return to the council's role as a provider of new homes for the first time in more than 20 years.

Cllr Trevor Bence, the council's cabinet member for housing, said: "We are pleased to have made a start on these new homes and have more in the pipeline.

"We hope to be able to recycle more funds from the right to buy process to enable us to provide more homes for the many people in the district on our waiting list who cannot afford to buy or rent from the private sector."

Arun is building a total of 33 affordable home which will be available to rent in the next two years.

Wick in Littlehampton will see homes built and nine newly-built properties in Barnham have been bought and will be available later this year.

THe contract for the work was awarded to Brymor

by Arun last May for a combined value of £3.9m for the houses at Glenlogie and Wick.

THe same decision also authorised the spending of £1.1m on the houses in Garden Crescent in Barnham, subject to contract.

Arun's website states there are 1,220 households on its housing register. Assessments of all their cases have yet to be made to give the detailed figures on the register as 61 in band A, 79 in band B and 456 in band C. THere are a further 99 who have not been placed in any band.

THe website warns applicants could face a long wait because of a shortage of council and housing association properties.

Review of play areas started by councillors PLAY areas around Bognor Regis could close in a year.

A review of the leisure spaces is being carried out by Arun District Council.

Its officers are monitoring the use of the recreation equipment to find out the popularity of each location. Smaller areas where the items have become unsafe could face the axe as part of a 10-year sustainable play area strategy.

News of the review was given to councillors on the environment and leisure working group last week.

Oliver Handson, Arun's greenspace and cleansing contract and development manager, said 14 smaller play areas had been closed in the past five years.

THis gave Arun 89 sites to manage.

"Arun's current provision of play areas varies greatly in terms of quality and play value. THese range from large multi-age range sites within a larger park or open space to small individual neighbourhood sites within housing developments.

"A number of skate facilities and multiuse games areas are included within this overall figure."

THe review began last year and would continue for a further six months before the results were presented to councillors.

Many of the poorer quality play areas which the council managed, he said, were adopted between 15 and 25 years ago as part of the play provision imposed on developers of housing estates.

But they needed to be kept clean as well as the equipment maintained and replaced. THis left the council facing a £605,000 shortfall in the £1.375m predicted cost of buying equipment in the

"Despite the work to reduce Arun's stock of low value play areas, there remains a need to significantly reduce the overall number in order to achieve a position which could be considered sustainable," he warned.

Cllr Dr James Walsh (LD, Littlehampton Beach) said: "Because of underinvestment for 25 years, nothing has been done to these sites. THey have fallen into disrepair and some of the equipment has become dangerous."

"We need to invest in these little places on a regular basis. I don't want to see us making the same mistake in the future.

"We know we need super play areas we have created over the last few years that mothers, fathers and children like to use."

Cllr Jacqueline Maconachie (C, Aldwick W) said: "As long as the everything is safe and well maintained, I am happy for the officers to come up with their ideas."

Cllr Emma Neno (C, Rustington E) said: "If anything does close, there needs to be something in walking distance."

Cllr Mike Northeast (L, Courtwick) said: "What kids want are places to run around and play ball games in. I don't want these piddling little play areas because they don't serve anybody."

Philippa Dart, the council's environmental services director, said most of the sites which had closed consisted of two rockers and a wooden horse.

"THey provided no fun whatsoever. What is wanted are much larger play areas with nice play equipment."

Sites where the equipment had been removed still remained as open spaces.

Views on budget BUSINESSES around Bognor Regis have the chance to have their say about Arun District Council's budget.

A written consultation with the non-domestic ratepayers in the district is being staged by the council until February 2.

Any comments will be taken into account by councillors when they agree their budget - and set their level of council tax - for the coming year at a special meeting on February

22.

Cottage battle at charity meeting

` Bodybuilder is star on TV show A UNIQUE bodybuilder from Bognor Regis has delighted TV viewers on a peak-time show.

Choon Tan was among the contestants in the latest series of ITV's Ninja Warriors UK challenge.

Choon, 21, is known as the UK's smallest bodybuilder and stands at 4ft 10in tall. He failed to make it past his first appearance at the show after being unsuccessful in one of its tough obstacles in front of a studio audience.

He said on social media: "THis was honestly the best day of my life so far.

Unfortunately, the one thing I didn't practise was the swing and ended up in the water. "(It) was much harder than it looks and hit my head so...hard."

Choon grew up in Bognor and went to Felpham Community College. He studied at Chichester College and is on an applied sports and exercise course at Northumbria University.

Born with a genetic defect, he began bodybuilding to boost his confidence.

New housing plan in village UP TO 300 homes could be built to almost double the size of Climping.

Mulgrave Properties has submitted outline plans for the proposed major estate on land west of Church Lane and south of Horsemere Green Lane.

THe protests from residents were instant.

Five had objected to the scheme within 36 hours of it being publicised by Arun District Council.

THe first objector was villager Ann Smith.

She told the council: "THe plan seems to adopt a cavalier and light-hearted attitude to the traffic issues this more than doubling of numbers will produce. THree hundred homes must mean a minimum of 300 vehicles on the already congested Church Lane and A259 which the new roundabout is inadequate to address.

"THe report mentions that the proposed site is at low risk of flood but could cause

flooding elsewhere. THis is worrying.

She also raised the village's inability to recruit GPs for a possible doctor's surgery and the need for more spaces at the village primary school.

Climping's neighbourhood plan was compiled in 2015 to guide development around the village. It states the area contained 408 households.

Parker Dunn, the planning agents for Mulgrave Properties, say in a statement the homes will range from one to five bedrooms mainly in bungalow and two storey dwellings. THey will be in terraces, semi-detached and detached but detailed designs will be submitted if the initial plans are approved.

"THe primary aspiration of this masterplan was to create a village heart for Climping," they state.

AUTHOR Beryl Kingston has taken her fight about Blake's Cottage in Felpham to London.

Beryl used the latest annual meeting of the Blake Society to continue her criticism of the charity's role in the future of the building where the poet wrote the words which became Jerusalem.

She claimed she was unable to state her points at the London meeting about her allegations over the role of the charity.

She wrote on social media she was angry at her treatment at the meeting last Friday and would continue her battle about what happens to Blake's Cottage with the appropriate authorities.

"I know that I do not deserve this treatment from a society that I served impeccably, with great commitment, passion, goodwill and inexhaustible efforts at conciliation of conflicts, as all the trustees, the chair(man) included, have repeatedly acknowledged.

"Apologising for the harm done is an option. THat would be the beginning of a solution. It is possible, then diaologue can ensue and it's not the end of the world," she wrote.

As reported, Beryl and the society have clashed about the related Blake's Cottage Trust and its role in the cottage's purchase.

One of the main goals of the trust is to be build a visitors' centre in the grounds of the cottage and make room for it by knocking down a 1970s extension.

THe cost of the work is among the £1.5m the trust is seeking for work on the Grade II* listed thatched cottage.

Spike in numbers of prickly pals at centre

By Fiona Callingham 01243 908506 ext 10 news@sussexpost.co.uk THE team at Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital in Sidlesham have seen a rise in infant hedgehogs brought into their care over the winter months.

Animal Care Manager Emma Pink explained how they were currently taking care of approximately 250 of the creatures, as opposed to previous years in which they had seen about 100 fewer of them. THis is due to a busy breeding season last year.

Emma explained how this was advantageous to the animals.

She said: “Last year, thankfully, has seemed to be a better breeding year for the hedgehogs. We’ve seen a rise in hedgehog numbers over the winter, and long may it continue.

"Unfortunately, the breeding season was a little later than usual so the younger ones have needed more help to survive.”

THis is where the team at Brent Lodge were there to help. From as early as August last year they housed all juvenile hedgehogs brought in from all around West Sussex and beyond by considerate members of the public. Some of the critters came from as far away as Brighton, Southampton and even London. THe aims of the lodge are to keep the young hedgehogs safe, fed, warm and well cared for until they are able to fend for themselves in the wild.

Once the hedgehog has reached an ideal weight (of at least 600 grams) they are then released into an outside area of Brent Lodge to let them acclimatise to being outside. THey will also be monitored during this stage to check they are eating

properly and not losing weight. Once the help Brent Lodge continue their amazing team are happy with this, the hedgehog work. THey are always looking for old newspapers, sheets and towels that can be can be released back into the wild.

Sometimes, the hedgehogs are brought used as bedding, and on their website is in needing more than just a warm home for an updated wishlist of items they urgently the winter. THose that need urgent medical need.

At the moment, the demand is for tinned attention go straight to the veterinarians at Brent Lodge who are able to perform dog and cat food as the enormous numbers of resident hedgehogs have been eating surgery if necessary.

First talk about first aid for pets GIVING injured pets the kiss of life was among the topics passed on to Bognor Regis firefighters in a unique session.

Head nurse Nat Pink took her sevenyear-old cocker spaniel cross Dudley with her for the tutorial at the town's fire station.

She used him to explain to the fire crews how best to revive domestic animals caught in a blaze and how to check their pulses to see if they are alive. THis was Nat's initial visit to the fire station. She believed it was also the first in the county.

"I demonstrated how to revive cats and dogs with CPR - cardiopulmonary resuscitation - and how to look after

animals with burns.

"I showed them how to pick up animals without hurting them or being hurt," she said.

Nat's visit was linked to the Smokey Paws campaign to have face masks for animals included as standard in the equipment of fire crews alongside those for humans.

"Face masks for humans obviously don't fit over cats and dogs because of the different shapes of the faces," she said.

THe firefighters told her about their experiences with injured pets and how the advice she had passed on would be useful in helping to save the lives of animals.

A NEW manager has been appointed by a charity as its seeks to extend its centre for cancer patients in West Sussex and east Hampshire.

Lisa Joy has taken up the role at the drop-in premises run by CancerWise in Basin Road in Chichester.

Lisa will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a supportive relationship with CancerWise clients and their families.

She will also oversee the complementary services and treatments offered by counsellors and therapists who work with the charity.

In addition, she will work closely with the team of volunteers who help support the work and daily running of CancerWise.

"I am thrilled to be able to take on the challenge of working with CancerWise at a very busy time," said Lisa.

"We are planning to extend the size of the centre so that we can continue to provide a calm, welcoming atmosphere to support the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing of our clients, as well as providing additional therapy rooms."

She has gained experience in providing community care services for 15 years in England and Australia.

Part of her new job will see her lead the work of CancerWise in building on its relationships with its communities.

CancerWise is open in Basin Road from 9.30am-4.30pm, Monday to Wednesday, and 9.30am-1pm, THursday and Friday.

A LATE Aldwick man's role in developing a vital medical procedure has been praised by a leading expert.

As reported last week, Doug Fielder played a crucial role in turning the potential for using the properties of sound for medical diagnosis into reality.

Mr Fielder's funeral was held on Monday at St Richard's Church, close to his home in Aldwick. He passed away on January 7, at the age of 86.

Susan Halson-Brown, the programme director medical ultrasound of King's College London, said the contribution of Mr Fielder and other pioneers had largely been forgotten as their vision had been incorporated seemlessly into daily medical practice.

"Doug Fielder was to the field of medical ultrasound what Alistair McKee was to the Mary Rose project, a quiet man, there at the beginning and hugely instrumental in the success of the project but content to let others take the recognition.

"He remained interested in medical physics and electronics right up to his death and has left a legacy to the field of medical ultrasound through the many people still within the field whose origins were from the company he helped to found, Sonicaid Ltd. "We take ultrasound examination very much for granted, with 9.3m examinations taking place each year, growing at a rate of about eight per cent a year.

"Alongside conventional projectional

radiography (X-ray), ultrasound is one of the most available diagnostic tests to GPs and has become an integral part of obstretic care through the fetal anomaly screening programme.

"We should remember those early pioneers, like Doug Fielder, as we owe them a debt of gratitude which will never be repaid," said Mrs Halson-Brown.

She said one of the most important developments in obstetric ultrasound technology, the ultrasound fetal heart detector, was developed in a garage/ workshop in Bognor Regis, using an OXO cube tin as its prototype housing.

Commercially developed by Sonicaid, a Bognor Regis company which moved to Chichester and Livingstone in Scotland, the Sonicaid D102 became the first in a series of fetal surveillance machines initially developed by Doug Fielder, Frank Baker and Ronnie Cowan which revolutionised obstetric care and won a Design Council award for medical electronics in 1976.

Sonicaid's continued research led to a second in 1980 for the Sonicaid System 8000 which took the technology further.

Mr Fielder's move to St Richard's Hospital enabled him to continue his research, initially with a forerunner of today's 3D ultrasound technology.

He was also involved in the screening pilot at Chichester for the life-threatening condition of abdominal aorta aneurysm which was adopted nationally in 2011.

Junior parkrun is launched

THe town's popular parkrun for adults has been extended to those aged 4-14 and the popularity of Sunday's inaugural event delighted organisers.

A total of 113 children tackled the 2km course at the Arena Sports Centre in Westloats Lane in spite of the just above freezing temperature.

Karen Vilday, the event director, said: "With such a parkrun community already established at the 5km Saturday parkrun in Hotham Park each week, the new junior parkrun has already generated great interest and support.

"THe children will now have their own parkrun where they can run with or without their parents, but - more importantly - build their own parkrun community with friends and siblings while keeping active and having fun."

Karen heads a core group of trained volunteers who will stage the run at 9am each Sunday.

THeir aim is to get more young children taking part in regular sport and physical activity. THe aim is to have fun, regardless of an individual's pace.

THe success of the first run can be seen by the fact more than 250 people were present taking part or supporting.

Bognor Regis parkrun event director Ben Bowers said: "THe fact children as young as four have the opportunity to take part in their own junior version of the phenomenal parkrun experience is

fantastic. A big thank-you must go to the funders, volunteers and parkrun UK who have all put in the hard work to enable this event to come to Bognor Regis each week.

"I hope that the event encourages even more children to take part in running and enjoy the experience."

Parkrun ambassador Mike Houston has helped with the launch and the training of volunteers.

He said: "I'm confident that the event will grow from strength to strength in the coming weeks and months and help encourage children in the area to get active on a regular basis at a great free and fun event."

` Crime survey of residents launched A SURVEY has launched to seek the views of residents around Bognor Regis about crime in their area.

THe aim of the questionnaire is to seek their views on their experience and perceptions of crime together with what is important to them in their local area.

It is being run by the Safer Arun Partnership, composed of councils and the police and probation services.

County council cabinet member for community wellbeing, Cllr Christine Field, said: "However safe a place is, the perception of crime can have a big impact on a community so it's really important for us to understand residents' views, not only on their experience of crime but also their perception of crime."

Newcomers wanted for club to survive NEW members are being urgently sought to keep Bognor Regis Swimming Club afloat.

THe club's number of swimmers have almost halved, from 100 to just over 50, in just four years.

It is 52 years this weekend since the opening meeting at the former pool in Butlin's established the club.

Membership topped 300 very quickly and the club was bursting at the seams.

Current chairman Sarah Boote-Cook would love to have the same problem but she has vowed the club will get stronger from its current size.

"We are not going anywhere. Talk has been made of a merger with the clubs in Littlehampton and Chichester. But we are all different and we are the smallest club.

We would soon be swallowed up.

"I was told that so much had disappeared from Bognor Regis and we are determined the club will not be the next thing to go," she said.

THe club's membership might be probably the smallest in its proud history but the age profile gives Sarah real hope for the future. Nearly all the swimmers are aged 9-11 and the benefits they will gain from the club's coaches should see them help it to regain its previous strength.

"I do feel positive about the club and can see a way forward," she said. "Give these swimmers two years and they will become very good. We are also about to start to work towards the ASA's Swim 21 recognition.

f Hard at work practising their strokes Two major events this May - including the Vanessa Knight open meeting - will also raise the club's profile and muchneeded funds. Last year's open meeting attracted more 300 swimmers from around England and as far south as the Channel Islands.

Sarah said: "We had to have crowd control at the Arun Leisure Centre because it was packed. We will also be holding a Scouts gala this year. THe one a few years ago prompted a surge in numbers."

Sarah said swimming was essential for anyone living in Bognor Regis apart from its attractions as a sport.

"We live on the coast of an island nation and yet the ASA's latest national statistics show 80 per cent of pupils leaving primary school can't swim.

"I don't know why parents don't see it as an essential skill.

"Yes, it is a commitment to swim two hours a night for up to five nights a week when there is also homework to do. But it is also a commitment to play football and that's always popular."

THe club meets at the 25m four-lane Arena Sports Centre pool off Westloats Lane and Sarah said the centre's managers were sympathetic to its situation.

"THe Arena are absolutely brilliant to us and we would not be here if they didn't support us as much as they do," she said.

But it still costs £21,000 a year to run the pool. THat needs a lot of fundraising.

Events are constantly being devised to keep the money coming in - along with a new generation of swimmers.

Amber gives hope for the club's future AMBER Macrae is one of Bognor Regis Swimming Club's two county standard swimmers.

THe 13-year-old reached the level of the best in West Sussex with a time of 3min 5sec in the 200m butterfly.

She is just one second away from joining the elite in the south east.

"I feel in my own space when I am in the water," said Amber, pictured top right. "I struggle a bit academically but swimming is something I can be really proud of.

"Some of my friends are good at reading and writing. But I am good at swimming.

It's great to get to the county standard because it shows people how good I am and that I have something to show for my swimming."

She has been a member of the club for two years and intends to keep up the sport to help her career ambition of becoming a marine biologist.

One of the club's younger swimmers is Connor Merrick. He achieved his first personal best in the 50m front crawl in the club's gala meeting earlier this year.

Connor, nine, said: "You get a lot of exercise from swimming and it's just fun.

It feels like I am flying when I'm in the pool and makes me feel free. I also want to be an Olympian and I train three times a week."

THe club's longest-serving swimmer is

Josh Zarn, 50, who has been turning up for training since 1974. THe NHS mental health worker still goes along four nights a week to keep fit and enjoy the camaraderie.

"THe main thing I like about swimming is that pretty much anyone can do it," he said. "It does not impact on the joints like a lot of the gravity-based sports.

"If you swim with other people, it's also fun as opposed to ploughing up and down the lanes on your own."

He can boast a couple of bronze county medals from his competitive days.

Head coach Sue Eason has the role of developing the present young swimmers to that level.

"THe kids give me job satisfaction. We teach them how to be competitive and how to obey the rules.

"You notice the talent they have got and build on it. We've got two swimmers at county times and a few more just a fraction away with just a fingertip separating them from getting there yet.

"It's all about somebody who will listen, wants to be here and has got good motivation. Some of them want to be Olympians and want to beat the best."

Former members Gemma Spofforth and Duncan Goodhew did just that in previous Games to show it is possible with the right attitude and ability.

A NEW 30mph speed limit has been proposed for a stretch of the A29 in Eastergate.

West Sussex County Council wants to make motorists travel at the lower speed for longer along Fontwell Avenue.

It intends to create a traffic regulation order to enable the current 30mph limit to be extended northwards to a point 45m north of Eastergate Lane to achieve this.

A statement by Tony Kershaw, the council's director of law and assurance, says: "Fontwell Avenue presently has a 30mph speed limit between its junctions with Nyton Road and a point immediately north of its junction with Collins Close.

"A 40mph speed limit then applies northwards from this point.

"Residents on the 40mph length of road have raised concerns about safety when accessing their driveways.

"Residents of Collins Close have also raised concerns that the location of the change between the 40mph and 30mph speed limits is too close to the junction of Collins Close.

"As a result, they state that traffic often passes the junction of Collins Close in excess of the 30mph speed limit, which in combination with limited visibility, makes emerging from the junction hazardous."

A consultation about the proposal is being held until February 9.

A will of iron is needed to resist the delightful menu at The Foundry

by Fiona Callingham WALKING into the cosy surroundings of THe Foundry in Chichester I was taken aback.

Having not been on the premises since it was THe Globe Inn a couple of years ago I was startled by not just the physical difference of the place but the welcoming atmosphere it now afforded.

Both pub and restaurant areas blended perfectly for a venue that felt homely yet stylish. THe patterned wallpaper and carpets reminded me of décor found in relatives’ homes and the wooden aesthetic of the bar and beer garden wouldn’t have looked out of place in a swanky London bar. THis design also felt very much like a fusion of old and new, posters in the bathroom of Marilyn Monroe and a gramophone by the till coupled with the kitschy wallpaper felt fashionable rather than

out of touch.

My friend and I were greeted immediately by the friendly bar staff who showed us to a table in the restaurant area. It took us longer than usual to decide what to order as the menu proved varied and tempting to say the least.

For me, the choice of starter was obvious.

And the grilled halloumi on a red pepper salad certainly did not disappoint. Halloumi can be devilishly tricky to get right. If undercooked in can be soggy and unappetising, and overcooked results in a charred lump that resembles coal. Not so here. It was perfectly cooked and the sweet red peppers in the salad only complemented the saltiness of the cheese.

It was also an ideal portion size that meant I was still able to enjoy my main, and priced at £5.50 which I felt was very reasonable.

My friend opted for the whitebait. It was served with homemade tartare sauce and

garnished with fresh rocket and a slice of lemon. He described the breadcrumb coating of the fish as crispy and tasty, and the fish itself as being full of flavour. THis was a similar price to my halloumi, and at £5.25 we thought that the whitebait was worth every penny.

THe service was extremely quick and we didn’t have to wait long for our mains. My friend had ordered the steak and ale pie, which was served with mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy. He was delighted that the pie was completely encased in pastry, which isn’t always the case with this dish. THe meat was tender and tasty, and both the pie and accompanying vegetables were more than enough food. He managed to eat it all, though, because he said it was too good not to. We were both surprised that this meal was priced at only £9.95 which was extremely good value considering its size and quality.

I felt the same about my main, the garden burger. As a vegetarian I constantly struggle to find food in restaurants that is actually worth the money. But this burger was delicious. It was served with a generous portion of golden chips, onion rings and a salad garnish. THe burger itself was made of beans and pulses and was crispy on the outside with a soft cheesy centre. It was actually a substantial replacement for meat, which is often difficult to find. At £8 my food almost felt like a steal, especially as I came to the conclusion that it was the best vegetarian burger I had found in Chichester.

A roaring time at The Lion in Pagham THIS 15th century smugglers’ haunt has character in abundance to distinguish it from other pubs in the area.

OUR love affair in this country with Indian food in fact dates back to over 200 years ago. When the first Indian restaurant in England opened in the early 1800s it proved a popular spot with the local residents of London.

Owner Michael Noor opened So India last year, following the success of his other restaurants in the area, and has since converted the building to create an elegant and attractive venue, suitable for very large parties, with smaller more intimate areas for couples.

We were both very impressed by the extensive menu, which includes some unusual dishes, such as ostrich bazar, duck shaslik, and mussels, alongside the more familiar chicken, lamb and fish based dishes.

So India treated us to a selection of dishes. To start, the crab malibar, a smooth homemade minced crab cake prepared with onions, green peppers and potatoes, an excellent appetiser, along with the tiger prawns puree, resplendent with herbs and spices, and salmon tikka, delicate chunks of salmon marinated in barbecue sauce and cooked over charcoal to start.

We were spoilt for choice with the main course dishes, but in the end sampled the gost kata massala, a tender lamb tikka which had been immersed overnight in a marinade of ground spices, and served in a delicate sauce with just a hint of tamarind,

THe duck jaalsha was a dish I had not tried before, and would thoroughly recommend, lean duck pieces crisped over charcoal flames, and simmered in a spicy sauce with coconut and cardamom - simply irresistible.

My dining companion is a devoted fan of lamb and he particularly enjoyed the honey roasted spicy lamb dish. THe tender marinated meat was cooked in lemon, to give it a piquant sharpness which was mellowed by the addition of coconut milk.

THe feast continued with chicken kala, with ginger and peppers. one of the chef’s recommendations, and the classic chicken massala, cooked in a clay oven with a creamy tandoori sauce.

To accompany our selection, we tried some of the array of side dishes: nirasmish - a variety of colourful vegetables dry and spicy - and a delicious creamy yellow tarka dall, comprising lentils with garlic. THe dall was particularly delicious with a big chunk of the fluffy garlic naan, and, in contrast, the sag sana gobi of potatoes, spinach and

chickpeas was a lighter dish.

Of course no Indian meal would be complete without rice, and as well as the plain basmati rice we tried the lemon and ginger variety; a great accompaniment to the selection of meat and fish we sampled, giving it a little extra zing!

Prices are very reasonable with a standard chicken korma costing £5.25 and the house speciality dishes starting at £7.95.

So India is gaining a very good reputation around town already, and with the extensive menu, hot fresh authentic Indian cuisine and smiling, friendly waiter service, it is no surprise.

Something for everyone at the Clock House Cafe

Whether it’s a tempting all-day breakfast, a healthy jacket potato or a filling homemade main meal like a lasagne that you’re after, THe Clock House Cafe will not disappoint with its delicious and extensive menu.

It’s not just about the food though. With its homely atmosphere and friendly staff, customers always feel welcome in the cafe. THis is evident by the amount of customers who regularly visit for their meals, snacks or hot drinks.

Lunch is also a treat at the Clock House. All their meals are lovingly prepared in the cafe’s kitchen by their talented chefs. Highlights include the delicious lasagne, of which there is both a meat and vegetable option.

I also love their flavoursome soups: both tomato and basil, and leek and potato which are equally nourishing and warming, perfect for the cold weather.

Priced at only £3.50 for the soup and a crusty bread roll, it is such good value.

THeir menu also includes such tasty delights as fillet steaks, beef and chicken burgers, and a range of sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and salads.

Clock House Cafe prides itself on its homemade delights. THe cottage pie, macaroni cheese, chilli con carne and chicken jalfrezi boast a real freshness that only comes with homemade meals.

THis is aided by the use of the best produce in their food. All the eggs used in the cafe are free range and their meat suppliers only deal in fresh, tender meat.

Big flavours from the Big Smoke Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

A LA Dick Whittington I headed off to London last weekend, not in pursuit of gold, but rather to attend a rock concert at the legendary 100 club, return to my favourite Hilton hotel in Paddington and sample the delights of Harvey Nichols in terms of Saturday lunch and the purchase of one or two fine wines from the Loire.

Friday night I ventured out to the renowned 100 Club to attend, as part of their Blues week, the Deborah Bonham concert, Debbie and spouse Pete being local residents, formerly of Bersted and regular drinking partners of mine at the Royal Oak and now residing Chidham way.

THey are about to embark upon a tour in France and during the concert Debbie (pictured above with yours truly) duly delivered in imperious fashion a thunderous version of No Angel, a song which celebrates her incredible vocal range and gorgeous, golden voice.

Debbie, like a fine wine, improves with age (nevertheless she still looks fresh and exudes energy) and combined with husband Pete Bullick's guitar-playing acumen are a band to look out for at any

local venue!

Saturday lunch-time and Harvey Nichols as a venue enticed me and I subsequently looked at the wine shop concentrating on the Loire region and purchased a Harvey Nichols 2015 Sancerre for £18 from the flinted hillsides of Saint-Satur with a combination of old vines (some over 60 years old), low yields and six months of lees ageing and exhibiting a hint of smoky minerality complemented by refreshing

acidity culminating in a long finish! A classic Sancerre to savour!

Variety is reputedly the spice of life, as the dictum says, so I have decided this week to concentrate exclusively on the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety. THis particular grape is a green-skinned grape variety that originates from the Bordeaux region of France and undoubtedly derives its name from the French Sauvage and Blanc. It is an early-ripening aromatic grape and in

cooler climates, such as in the Loire region of France, produces refreshing acidity in the form of pure, zesty wines. THere are over 275,000 plus acres of Sauvignon Blanc planted worldwide and in France Pouilly - Fumé, Sancerre, Graves, Entre - Deux Mers and Touraine are prime examples thereof.

Returning to Blighty, I ambled into Sainsbury's and located two discounted examples of New World Sauvignon

Blanc initially selecting a Most Wanted Sauvignon Blanc for an offer price of £6.25, apt nomenclature for a delectably fresh, smooth and refined wine whose coastal climate helps develop the crisp, gooseberry tang - pray fill your boots! For an extra 50 pence the offer price of the Brancott Estate 2016 Sauvignon Blanc is a veritable crowd - pleaser with vibrant tropical and citrus flavours!

SMOKED SALMON HASH BROWN WITH POACHED EGG AND

HOLLANDAISE INGREDIENTS FOR THE HOLLANDAISE SAUCE • 50ml/2fl oz white wine vinegar • 6 peppercorns • 1 bay leaf • 1 sprig tarragon • 2 egg yolks • 110g/4oz clarified butter, warmed • 1 lemon, juice only • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard • pinch cayenne pepper FOR THE SMOKED SALMON HASH BROWN • 1kg/2lb 4oz cooked potato, slightly mashed • 400g/14oz cooked salmon fillet • 150g/5½oz smoked salmon, torn into pieces • 150g/5½oz crème fraiche • 2 tbsp chopped dill • 75g/2½oz unsalted butter FOR THE POACHED EGGS • salt, to taste • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar • 4 free-range eggs

METHOD For the hollandaise sauce, in a pan, heat the vinegar, peppercorns, bay leaf, tarragon and 50ml/2fl oz water and cook until the liquid has reduced in volume to a tablespoon. Strain through a sieve.

Put the liquid and the egg yolks in a food processor and blend. With the motor running, gradually add the clarified butter until you have a smooth sauce. Finish with the lemon juice, mustard and cayenne pepper. Set aside and keep warm (cover the mixture to prevent a skin from forming on the surface).

For the smoked salmon hash brown, place the potato, salmon, smoked salmon, crème fraîche and dill in a large bowl and mix. Heat a large frying pan until hot and add the butter.

To make each hash brown,

place a metal ring in the centre of the pan and pack it with the mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden-brown and crisp.

For the poached eggs, bring a pan of salted water to the boil and add the vinegar.

Reduce the heat to a simmer and whisk the water to create a whirlpool. Once settled, crack an egg in. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, remove the poached egg carefully with a slotted spoon and place on a plate to drain. Repeat the process with the remaining eggs.

To serve, place the salmon hash in the centre of serving plates and top with the egg and hollandaise sauce. Just before serving, break the egg yolks.

Gain a big benefit from these little seeds EVERY now and again I get reminded how wonderful a simple plant, herb or food can be and what a difference it can make to our health. It’s often these very simple foods that are natural and easily accessible that can be the most effective. We don’t always need medication or drugs to support the body and its very complicated system. Less is more as they say!

Hemp seeds have been around forever.

THey are technically a nut and are extremely nutritious. THey are a great protein source, as more than 25 per cent of their total calories are from high-quality protein and these gorgeous little seeds contain over 30 per cent fat (good fat) and are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alphalinolenic acid (omega-3).Hemp seeds are an amazing source of vitamin E and many healthenhancing minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc. THey can be consumed raw, cooked or roasted. Hemp seed oil is also very healthy, and has been used as a food/ medicine in China for over 3,000 years!

In my clinics, if I give hemp seed oil to people with eczema it seems to make massive improvements with their skin condition. It does this by improving blood levels of essential fatty acids.

Sometimes you can almost see the skin healing in a matter of days. It also improves (dare I say, can completely clear up at times)

dry, irritated and/or itchy skin and reduces redness and swelling. THey can also work their magic to enhance the general condition of your skin, hair and nails giving them strength and shine. So for such an inexpensive product, they are a little power-house of goodness within the body!

Did you know that by weight, hemp seeds provide similar amounts of protein to beef and lamb? 30 grams of hemp seeds, or 2–3 tablespoons, provide about 11 grams of protein. THat’s amazing as they are considered a complete protein source, which means that they provide our bodies with all the essential amino acids. Essential amino acids (EFAs) are not produced in the body and need to be gained through our diet.

Hemp seeds provide a similar amount of protein to beef

by premenstrual syndrome. Hemp seeds can help with all sorts of discomfort including reducing breast pain, tenderness and feeling bloated.

Garage has kept Bognor Regis on the move

Bicycles as well as cars were supplied and serviced in past decades cars to be brought into W. Jones and Sons for their annual overhaul. THis entailed the cars being left sometime between September and February so that cars could be dismantled to ensure all parts were carefully and individually maintained. During Goodwood week, it was possible for your car to be ‘garaged’ for between 1/- (5p.) and 1/6d. per night. (7 1/2p.)

Bicycles were still important to the business and could be purchased for £5 each at this time. In 1935 company records showed that they sold 283 bicycles. Charabancs were also continuing to provide excursions. Some of the trips would take people out to North Bersted to view the old Stamp House in addition to other trips around the neighbourhood.

f Employees outside the garage BOGNOR in 1902 must have been quite an exciting place. As we have already reported, the current railway station was built and opened during the summer. THe Arcade was opened in July, 1902, which allowed pedestrians to walk through a set of shops to the sea - quite a new phenomenon at the time.

With this type of development there was also an increase in population and new businesses were starting. Sadly, not many remain, but one which has is W. E. Jones and Sons, the garage situated in Lennox Street.

In September, 1902, William Jones opened a cycle shop in the High Street, where today we have William Hill. William Snr, as he became known, was married with two sons, William and Stanley. THis shop in the High Street advertised Humber, Raleigh, and Triumph cycles in a decorative manner. In the early days it was possible to hire tricycles - which, incidentally, were made at the shop -for use on the beach. Eventually, a workshop was built in Belmont Street, which is still in use today, and the staff was engaged on motorised repairs.

In 1917, they had a number of charabancs

which were used to transport staff all the way out to Middleton on Sea to the Norman THompson Aircraft factory. However, disaster struck and there was a serious fire that burned out all the vehicles.

THe Second World War obviously interrupted the hire and selling of vehicles however Jones’ continued with their service philosophy.

During this period, they employed girls and men who were unable to go to war due to age or health. THeir task was to make small ammunitions for the government. For some of the men this was classed as their war service.

More than 100 people were employed and covering 24 hours per day making over 13 million pieces of ammunitions for the war

effort.

It is reported that petrol was delivered to the garage in two-gallon cans. THis was then stored in a unit with a half inch steel plated door. THis same area was then used to charge batteries. Some customers, such as Mr. Fletcher, in Hotham Park House, even had their petrol delivered. Many people would have two batteries, one in the car and one in to be charged.

When the war finished and people returned to their everyday lives, cars were needed again.

As a result, Jones’ servicing and maintenance facilities increased. Many ‘commercial travellers’ stayed in nearby hotels and would call into the showroom. Many of them had nicknames, such as Mr Mars, who would always bring Mars bars for the staff. Another gentleman was known as Mr Coffin Handles.

When we consider the cars over the years and the service the motorist receives it is fascinating to hear the stories of this one family and their service to the town. or many years Jones’ was an Agency for car manufacturers Singer, Humber, Morris, Wolseley, Riley, MG

THe firm recovered and grew into an important service provider not only in the town but also to the surrounding district.

THe collection of children’s tricycles they still owned were available on the seafront for 3d. a ride. Each night these tricycles would be returned to the garage, hosed down, oiled and greased ready for the eager children the next morning. Just this week, a gentleman told me he could remember small vehicles being available for hire at the end of Lennox Street from a gentleman called - Mr. Jones.

At the end of the First World War, cars were increasing in importance. Some of the early records show that in 1925 a total of 44 were sold by Jones and the numbers continued to increase. In 1933/4, Jones’ showroom was built in Lennox Street on the site of Osborne’s Coal yard and the early Observer offices. THis was such a different era. THen, it was possible for

One of their employees was engaged on all repainting tasks as required. W. Jones Snr was also engaged in the 1950s in collecting the Royal Mail from Fontwell to be sorted here in the town.

Eventually, they became involved again in hiring out vehicles, this time cars, and it was not unknown for all their 200 cars to be out in one week, so much so that they eventually opened an office at Heathrow Airport.

I have recently come across a used car list for 1971. One item which caught my eye was the information on the ‘speedo reading’ for each car - A 1967 Hillman Minx with 40,200 miles would cost £475, while a 1970 Triumph with 13,300 miles would cost £1,500.

THroughout the years you could always depend on finding an advertisement for W. Jones or W. Jones and Sons in any booklet or

brochure as they have continued to support their hometown. William Jones Snr. was also one of the founder members of the Bognor Fishing Club.

Bognor Regis has changed; the town and seafront developments have also created changes, such as the acquisition of the original Butlin’s site on the seafront for the building of today’s flats. THis meant that Jones’ lease for offices and parking was eventually terminated to allow these buildings to be demolished.

At this time in the 1990s Ford, with whom the family had been associated for many years changed their dealerships. THus today they sell ‘near new’ low mileage Ford cars, any new vehicle and selected quality used vehicles.

Jones’ business remains a family concern.

THeir service is offered from the showroom rather than from an open forecourt. It is here that you have personal service as you discuss and select your new vehicle.

THe GT models have an electronic sound generator which delivers a distinctive and exciting engine note into the cabin. When activated via a ‘GT’ button on the steering wheel, the traditional analogue speedometer changes to a digital numerical display and shows torque and turbo gauges. THe steering

wheel itself has a D-shaped rim and is trimmed in leather with perforated grips and red stitching. An aluminium engine start/ stop button is part of the Smart Entry System, complementing the chrome-tipped window switches and air-vent surrounds which lend the interior a classy appearance.

Equipment includes an MP3-compatible DAB radio as part of the six-speaker audio system and there are illuminated USB and AUX ports. THe GT models also have a 7-inch satellite navigation screen with Kia Connected Services featuring TomTom® Connected services. THis system includes European mapping and a Traffic Messaging Channel, and permits UK postcode entries. It allows drivers to choose the fastest, shortest or most fuel-efficient route to their destination and supports 15 languages. TomTom® functionality is another first for Kia, and supplies additional driving information such as traffic updates, speed camera locations and weather reports. THe 7-inch screen is also linked to a colour reversing camera.

THe 1.6-litre Gamma engine was the first turbocharged petrol unit to be offered by Kia in the UK. It is based on the normally aspirated version of the direct-injection Gamma engine, but the addition of an exhaust-driven turbocharger raises its power output by 51 per cent and the amount of torque it develops by 61 per cent for truly scintillating performance.

THe T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) engine develops 201bhp at 6,000rpm, but what really gives the GT its Instantaneous response and rapid acceleration is the 265Nm of torque available without interruption, now from only 1,500rpm to 4,500rpm.

Previously, peak torque started at 1,750rpm.

THe engine drives through a slickshifting six-speed manual transmission featuring performance-oriented ratios and

final drive to allow the GT to make the most of its torque with minimal fuel consumption.

Both GTs are dressed to thrill. THe unique front-end treatment, which is common to both models, features a low, broad bumper and air dam and a wide central lower air intake to supply additional cooling to the high-performance turbocharged engine.

THis is underscored by a red trim line which emphasises the wide and sporty track. THe lower air intake is flanked on either side by high-gloss black inserts housing ‘ice-cube’ LED daytime running lamps and foglights.

THe high-gloss black theme is continued on the graphite chrome-framed main radiator grille – with Kia’s family ‘tiger-nose’ outline.

From the rear, the sporty stance of both cars is evident in their bold shoulders and, on the pro_cee’d, steeply angled tailgate glass. THis is emphasised by a diffuser section in the lower edge of the rear bumper, separating the twin sports exhaust outlets.

Community News & Views My Sisters' House WELCOME to our latest column provided

THese columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help.

It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

TRUMP was inaugurated and within days hit the press (no surprise) for many reasons but one that stands out as questionable politics is about the abortion rules in America.

“No US funds can be or have been used to perform or promote abortion services overseas” THe fact is that President Trump’s shameful decision to reinstate the global gag rule will cause more unintended pregnancies, more maternal complications and injuries, less information about HIV/Aids prevention and treatment and more – not fewer – abortions.”

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, said: “Now, foreign non-governmental organisations will be forced to give women incomplete medical information, advice and care in order to participate in US-supported programmes abroad. When last in place, the global gag rule had the effect of decreasing access to family planning services around the world.

Study after study shows that when women have increased access to family planning services and supplies, such as contraceptives, the incidence of abortion decreases.

Republican congressman Michael Burgess, who chairs the House’s health subcommittee, welcomed the move. “Life is a precious and sacred gift, and we must do all we can to protect it,” he said. “I applaud President Trump for taking this important action and look forward to continuing to work together in advancing pro-life policies and protecting taxpayer dollars.”

THankfully, (or not depending on your views) abortions in the UK can be carried out in an NHS hospital or a licensed clinic, and are usually available free of charge on the NHS. Easiest route for advice is your GP and ask for a referral to an abortion service – your GP should refer you to another doctor if he or she has any objections to abortion.

Now again, the debate around abortion is in danger of becoming polarised by those only concerned with the unborn child on the one hand and those solely concerned with the rights of the women on the other. THe reality is that both lives matter. Furthermore , it is not just a women thing - men are involved.

However, it was clear that the millions of women who marched across the globe on Saturdday, January 21, were defending the rights of women of all backgrounds, beliefs, ethnicities and experiences in order that all may have a voice. Many posters and voices rejected the rhetoric of division and hate and the rise of xenophobia in this country and around the world. THe US had an unbelievable turnout but as they peacefully promoted their wishes the fears of new laws in the US had already begun.

Do not think it’s a US thing. In some ways, it feels extraordinary that the UK House of Lords (mainly men) will sit and consider whether they should force women to give birth to a baby with serious health problems, and in some cases, limited chance of survival outside of the womb.

On my soapbox now, folks, we must demand equal representation in politics so that our government may go forward to make decisions about all our futures with an understanding of the different experiences and needs of women – you only have to look at the photo of Trump signing the new abortion rules surrounded by men to see the danger ahead.

GARY is looking for a new home - and he hopes to find one tomorrow at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre's first viewing day of the year.

Two-year-old Gary has been living at the centre - at Chalder Lane in Sidlesham since April 18, 2016, after he was found as a stray.

He has told one of the centre's helpers: "I am a very special, friendly boy who desperately wants love and affection.

"Sometimes, I get a little carried away and can be naughty as I haven't ever had

a real home.

"I need a new owner who will let me settle in and help me to learn how to be loved.

"I would not be suitable to live with children and would prefer a quiet, relaxed home.

"I just hope there is someone out there that will take a chance on me."

Gary is among more than 100 cats and kittens which the centre is looking after and which are looking for their forever home.

CHALLENGING climbs and stunning scenery are guaranteed on a new charity off-road cycling event for the children's hospice in the area.

Chestnut Tree House has organised the Hit the Downs MTB on May 7 to offer the cyclists the chance to jump on their saddles and take on the South Downs Way on a 20 or 40-mile route.

A popular destination for mountain biking, the South Downs Way is a 100 mile off-road National Trust trail which runs the entire length of the South Downs National Trust.

Starting near Worthing, close to Chestnut Tree House, the Hit the Downs MTB will test riders with challenging climbs and rapid downhill descents. Its two different routes will enable cyclists of different experience to take part.

Lucy Bone, the hospice's events and campaigns fundraiser, said: "We're really excited to be introducing this new cycling challenge to our 2017 events calendar.

"Hit the Downs MTB allows people to combine their love of cycling with raising money for Chestnut Tree House, helping us to continue to support local children with life-shortening conditions.

"It costs over £3.5m each year to provide all our specialist care services for local children, both at the hospice and out in the community across Sussex and south east Hampshire."

But, she added, less than seven per cent of the hospice's funding comes from national government to leave it largely dependent on the generosity of individuals and businesses.

A CHICHESTER student has seen her short story turned into a printed book.

Ellie Roberts, from Bishop Luffa School, was chosen as a winner of Sussex company Evonprint's Get Kids Writing competition.

THe story by Ellie, 14, called Princesses Love Pizza, won the secondary school category. As well as receiving five printed copies of her book, she also won a £50 Amazon voucher and £75-worth of book tokens for her school.

Evonprint's Adam Rowland said: "We're very passionate about education at Evonprint, so this competition was all about getting children creative by showing off their writing skills.

"THere were some fantastic entries and we had a hard time choosing the winners."

Two runners-up were also chosen in the category. Both attend THe Weald School in Billingshurst.

CHICHESTER Art Society’s popular Figures & Faces workshops have returned on Tuesday afternoons after the holiday break and offer opportunities to develop the skills of life drawing and portraiture.

THere is a different model each week with award-winning local artist Lucie Cookson, pictured above, directing the poses and offering tips and guidance during the break.

Good observation underlies all successful painting and there is no better way of working at that than through portrait and life study.

THe sessions are particularly valuable for anyone wanting to improve their competence and there is a friendly, supportive atmosphere. We like to welcome new artists to the group!

Sessions alternate weekly between life study and portrait study, but a life study session can be used for portrait work if wished and a few artists do that.

THe cost to non-members of Chichester Art Society is £12 per session and there is no requirement to come every week.

THe Chichester Runners member was one of six picked to represent England at the annual international competition.

And Rebecca did her country proud returning home with a second and a third in the three races.

Rebecca, who made her debut for her country at the Dublin International late last year, was picked for the England women's team with Gemma Steel and Jenny Spink.

THe team flew out a few days early to adapt to the hot, humid conditions of the Caribbean and for the opportunity to interact with the host families, who accommodated the team for the trip. A drinks reception was held on the THursday evening with dignitaries and local politicians. THe team enjoyed engaging with them and meeting other elite athletes due to compete at the event.

Friday evening kicked off the weekend of

running with the Front Street Mile - although Rebecca, along with the rest of the England team, opted out in favour of the other races to come.

Saturday marked the start of the England contested races with the 10k over a challenging hilly course.

THe women’s race saw the top three positions all claimed by the England team.

Rebecca finished third in 35:41, just behind Gemma Steel (33:56) and Jenny Spink (34:33).

Some of the England athletes also decided to contest the half marathon on the Sunday.

In the ladies race, Gemma and Rebecca romped home in first and second, in 1:14:26 and 1:18:02 respectively, rounding off a superb weekend for the team.

A spokesman for England Athletics said: "THe trip was a huge success, with the opportunity for budding England talents to make their mark on the international stage and to assist in the preparation of established international athletes for upcoming races later in the season.

"It is hoped to be able to return next year to complete the triangle challenge."

f Chi hope to return to action this weekend

CHICHESTER RFC are fully rested and raring to go to get their fight against relegation back up and running again this weekend.

After a disappointing autumn, the Blues have put together a run of three wins from five as they look to pull themselves away from the bottom of National League THree London and South East division.

THe march was halted by the weather last weekend, with the trip to Sutton and Epsom falling victim to the frost.

But tomorrow sees Rob Lawrence's side return to action, hosting Hertford at Oaklands Park (2.15pm).

THe Blues will be out to avenge their initial fixture earlier in the season, when they slumped to a 49-0 hammering at the Hertfordshire side's ground in Ware.

But they will not have it easy, with the

visitors sitting third in the league and cruising past Guildford 42-10 last time out.

With no games surviving the weather in the division, both sides will have had an extra week off to rest and ready themselves.

Chi remain third-bottom and four points behind Southend directly above them.

THey will be hoping to replicate the match against Dorking last time out when a strong team performance and solid defensive display saw the Blues seal an 18-13 win.

Lawrence's side hope a repeat of that against Hertford could see them lifted out of the bottom three for the first time in months.

Elsewhere, and Bognor will be in action tomorrow, hosting Old Cranleighans at Hampshire Avenue (2.15pm).

Doug Millen's side currently sit second bottom of London THree South West division and are in need of a victory.

THe visitors will not be the easiest of opponents, as they make the trip from Surrey sitting third in the league.

Lions strike late to give Seagulls' starlets a cup scare

PAGHAM gave Brighton & Hove Albion's under-23s a Sussex Senior Cup scare before eventually losing out to the potential English Premier League stars of the future.

Despite falling three goals behind to the Seagulls' starlets, the Lions kept on fighting to the end.

A 25-yard strike from Lloyd Rowlatt and Keiron Pamment reduced the arrears in front of a decent crowd at Nyetimber Lane.

But Albion hit back, emerging 5-2 winners to cruise into the quarter finals.

THe match on Wednesday had already been postponed a number of times, initally due to fixture congestion and then frosty weather.

It meant the Lion's RUR cup semi- final with Crawley Down scheduled for last Tuesday has been put back to next month (February 11).

All eyes are now on the league, where Pagham currently sit fourth in the SCFL Premier. Heavy frost meant a planned home match against Peacehaven and Telscombe was postponed last weekend.

Next up for Mark Bennett's side is mid-table Horsham YMCA, who travel to Nyetimber Lane tomorrow (3pm).

Sidlesham in lighting plea Chi boss surprised at league form Ne Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com SIDLESHAM have made a renewed appeal for financial help as officials look to usher in a new dawn at the Recreation Ground.

THanks to a fire, floodlights at the village club's pitch have been out of action for years.

THe failure to get them repaired saw the club relegated to SCFL Division Two last season.

But with the club performing well on the pitch and a new committee strengthening the set-up off it, a renewed appeal has now been made to raise the ÂŁ11,000 needed to bring the lights back into use.

Committee member Caroline Henry-Evans said: "If we don't manage it, then we can't get promoted at the end of the season.

"We have until the end of the season so April at latest. We have to show the league that we are in the stages of fixing for them to promote us."

Under the direction of former

Chichester City manager Daren Pearce, Sidlesham have made great strides this term.

THey are currently second in SCFL Division Two, five points behind local rivals Bosham.

Pearce, who is also chairman of the club, has established a new committee and drawn up a five-year plan for the club.

Links have also been formed with Chichester City Ladies, which means their development side plays home games at the Rec. Work is underway as well to repair the ground's stand and improve the training pitch.

After their match last weekend was postponed due to the weather, Pearce's side return to action tomorrow with the Sids hosting Worthing Town Leisure in the second round of the division two cup (1.30pm).

With the club also in the semi- final of the Sussex Intermediate Cup, hopes are high that the Sids can win some silverware this season.

club's best ever performance in the FA Vase.

But the Chi boss believes that his side still have a lot more to give - even though a number of key players will be unavailable in the coming weeks.

Speaking to the Post, Rutherford said: "It's quite surprising that we have gone until now with just one defeat.

"I don't think that we have played extremely well all season, we just seem to grind out

"We always keep going and we work quite hard and so it's credit to the team that we have done as well as we have."

Chi lost ground on Haywards Heath in second after the Lillywhites' match against Newhaven was postponed last weekend.

A win for Heath at Lancing means the gap between the two is now four points although Chi do have two games in hand.

Rutherford's side return to action tomorrow, when they travel to Crawley Down (3pm), seeking to extend an unbeaten league run which began at the start of September.

THey will be out to do one better than when the sides met earlier in the season at Oaklands Park - a late Marc Pelling strike denied Chi all three points in the 2-2 draw.

THe Green and Whites will have to do it without some key men, though.

Daniel Hegarty, goalkeeper Anthony Ender and top scorer Scott Jones will all be missing in the coming weeks due to holidays.

Rutherford admitted it was frustrating. But with the club not applying for promotion this year, he said he would rather players took time out now if they had to, rather than next; as he is expecting the side and the club as a whole to push on next term in search of a place in the Ryman South.

He said: "It would be nice to have the squad together most of the year. We will struggle."

BOSHAM return to SCFL Division Two action tomorrow looking to extend their lead at the top of the table.

After being near unbeaten all season, Andy Probee's side are currently five points clear of second-place Sidlesham.

With their rivals in cup action, the Robins know that a win at home to Upper Beeding tomorrow (2pm) could stretch their advantage to eight points.

With last week's match called off and the week before seeing Bosham in cup action, Probee's side have been waiting three weeks to bounce back after suffering their first league defeat of the season against Jarvis Brook. In SCFL Division One, Selsey will be hoping for a better defensive performance after shipping 15 goals in the last three games,

the latest being a 5-1 home loss to Lingfield a fortnight ago.

THe Blues will be up against it, though, having to travel to Bexhill to play league leaders Little Common, who have netted 71 times in 24 games so far.

Selsey have lost twice to the Commoners already this term, including a 5-0 hammering in the Sussex Senior Cup. In the West Sussex Premier League Nyetimber Pirates host Rogate 08 at Bognor Sports Club (2pm), fresh from beating Bognor-rivals Predators 2-0 last weekend.

In the FA Women's Premier League South West, Chichester City Ladies are due to travel to the Isle of Wight on Sunday to play Shanklin (2pm). THe green army are top of the league but have not played for a fortnight.

Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com ROCKS boss Jamie Howell insists there's no secret to his side's second half spirit.

Bognor extended their unbeaten run to 11 last weekend, comprehensively beating Canvey Island 5-0 in chilly surroundings at the aptly named Frost Financial Stadium.

THat was despite Howell admitting that the side didn't fully click until after the break.

It is the fifth game in a row where the top of the table Rocks have picked up the pace in the second period. But Howell insists it's nothing to do with the words he utters to the team in the dressing room.

Speaking to the Post, he said: "I don't think there's a secret. Just some times that's the way the game works out. It gives you a chance to have a look at opponents and then have a think about how to break them down.

"Our fitness has been impressive, though, and it's been pleasing to see how we keep going for the full 90 minutes."

THe 5-0 win against Canvey saw James Fraser and Jimmy Muitt grab goals. THat was followed by on-loan striker Elijah Adebayo netting his first hat-trick for the Rocks. Howell said he is still not sure if Fulham youngster's initial onemonth loan period will be extended.

He said: "I don't know, to be honest. We have

got another two weeks to go and then after that I will speak to them and we'll see what happens.

"He's been great for us and it looks like he's really enjoying his football."

THe Rocks return to action tomorrow, welcoming bottom side Grays Athletic to Nyewood Lane (3pm). THen it's on the road for a Tuesday night trip to Sussex rivals Burgess Hill Town (7.30pm).

Bognor have already recorded 1-1 draws against both sides earlier in the season.

But with Grays and Burgess Hill deep in the bottom half of the Ryman Premier, hopes are high that the Rocks can extend their lengthy unbeaten run.

If there is a negative during that time, it's that Bognor have only kept one clean sheet in the last six matches.

Howell said: "We're not really looking at the back, to be honest. A lot of the work is done in pre-season in terms of structure and we then we give a few gentle reminders in the week.

"I think overall we have got the best defensive record in the league, alongside Havant.

"THat's a credit to the whole defence, and especially Dan Lincoln in goal. Since he's come in, he has been exceptional."

Striker Jimmy Wild is still a doubt as he battles back from a knee injury while Lorenzo Dolcetti and Ed Sanders may be made available again to SCFL Premier side Chichester City.

'Rocks cannot afford complacency' Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.com THERE is a buzz around Nyewood Lane, one that is getting louder every week as the Rocks promotion march rolls on.

As the season moves beyond the congestion of Christmas and past the halfway point, Bognor are still sitting pretty at the top of the Ryman Premier.

As most fixtures were called off last weekend due to the freezing weather, Jamie Howell's side had the chance to give themselves some breathing room.

Swapping the seaside of Sussex for the coast of Canvey Island, the Rocks downed the Gulls 5-0, returning home from Essex with a four point lead at the top of the table.

THe challengers are getting their act together.

Both Havant and Leiston have games in hand and the quality to string a series of results together.

But points in the bag do matter at this stage of the season.

As Bognor know all too well from last season, when the fixtures start coming thick and fast, it's hard to keep the consistency.

THe C-word is something Howell's side are

not struggling with at the moment.

Since being outplayed away at Tonbridge Angels at the start of December, the Rocks have been on a heavenly run and are undefeated in 11 in all competitions.

With two games against sides languishing towards the bottom of the league to come this week, some may be thinking that six points must follow in the next four days.

But Howell knows the Rocks must keep their focus.

He said: "THere's a chance for complacency but it's my job to make sure that's not the case.

"I'll be reminding the players that we got beat at home by Hendon, who have struggled this year. I also know that Grays have beaten Worthing at home, too, which is no easy feat.

"We would be foolish to take things lightly."

WELL, I don’t want to jinx things but we are on a good run at the moment.

Touch wood, we should be still there come the end of April!

We have been unbeaten since December 3. Long may this continue.

With only Jimmy Wild out with injury at the moment, it seems that the team is nearing full-strength again.

I believe the loaning out of Ed Sanders and Lorenzo Dolcetti to Chichester City is a required move for both concerned.

THey need game time. We can recall them whenever we like so that’s the most important point to remember.

As I have said in recent columns I believe they have both impressed but with Chad Field and Sami El-Abd doing so well in central defence and with Dan Beck returning to fitness, it will be hard to leave certain players out.

It must be difficult for Darin and Jamie to pick a team with so many players available.

It’s great to see a large number vying for spots in the starting line-up.

A visit from in-form Enfield Town soon followed our progression in the County Cup. Before kick-off, everyone was looking at the next two games as ones which can turn the promotion race upside down.

A draw was a good result in the end for Bognor.

It was great to see Elijah Adebayo getting on the scoresheet for the first time on his home debut.

It looked to be one of those typical afternoons when we went behind early in the first half. But some words in the dressing room at the break and a real determination in the team saw them come from behind to get the draw in this fixture.

Enfield, though, had plenty of chances - but in conclusion I thought it was a nice result against a solid team.

THe same trend happened again in the home game against Needham Market the following Tuesday.

THe team leaked an early 18th minute goal. Meaning they had to produce to get

back in the game. And so they did!

Jimmy Muitt hit a wonderfully flighted shot into the top right corner. A fantastic finish - goal of the season contender no doubt.

THen Alex Parsons found James Fraser with a pinpoint cross and he headed it in. It was a great win. And one that might be very important come the end of the season.

And so it was that we travelled to Canvey Island with our Rocks On Tour coaching travel subsidised by the BRTFC Supporters Club.

Canvey are really struggling this season. You could see from the way they played that their attacking play was good but they lacked something in the final third.

Nearing half-time, they really should have scored against us.

But Bognor made them pay with some clinical finishing and taking the chances afforded to them.

Fraser and Muitt scored in the first half and then Adebayo netted a hat-trick to take the Rocks travelling fans (and some Southend and Bolton supporters apparently due to a nearby postponement) home happy.

I did say in my match report that the scoreline was rather a flattering headline due to the amount of chances Canvey wasted, but we did what we had to and won the game convincingly in the end.

I still believe Canvey can get out of the mire - but they need to find the net. Apparently, their main striker had played 14 and scored 0 - so that tells you the problem there!

I will be at Nyewood Lane to see the Rocks take on Grays Athletic tomorrow. We must maintain this momentum!

Despite their lowly position, you just can’t underestimate any team in this league. As this goes to print, we are four points clear at the top.

It’s getting results in these games against the bottom teams that may be the difference between taking the title or not. Hope to see you all there cheering on the Green Army!
