Patients in town could move HEALTH services in Bognor Regis town centre could be moved.

NHS managers are considering shifting the work carried out in Bognor Health Centre to the town's war memorial hospital. The transfer is one of the options being considered for the future of the 1970s building as part of the regeneration ideas put forward by Arun District Council for the Hothamton site.

The GP services in the health centre are

run by NHS Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group.

The health centre has four GPs and a host of nursing staff who look after 9,153 patients, according to the latest statistics from last April.

A CCG spokeswoman said: "We are in regular contact with Arun District Council about the plans to transform the West Street/Steyne Street area of Bognor Regis. There are a number of options on

the table.

"The council has suggested a new health facility as part of the development and we are also looking at whether it would improve what is available for local people by co-locating services at the war memorial hospital.

"We will continue our planning with the council, in particular in relation to the funding available and together we will make sure that we have the right

service provision for people in Bognor Regis now and for the future."

The health centre, in West Street, sits at the southern end of the Hothamton car park and opposite the sunken gardens.

Spider-Man works at town's campus ONE OF Spider-Man's animators has begun work teaching the next generation in Bognor Regis.

Max Tyrie has taken up his tole as the first head of 3D animation and VFX (visual effects) at the University of Chichester. His arrival is a further step towards the opening of the university's ÂŁ45m engineering and digital technology campus in the town.

His extensive work has included the two Amazing Spider-Man movies as well as 2012, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, I Am Legend and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

He has also won Baftas for his work on the ground-breaking Walking with Dinosaurs documentaries for the BBC. His skills on Walking with Beasts saw him nominated for a Primetime Emmy award.

"I feel a real sense of ownership and achievement for Walking with Dinosaurs. It was one of the first projects I worked on and it set my career on a great path," he said.

"You do start to feel very attached to the characters you animate. I've spent many years of my life working on superhero movies and, as a result, Spider-Man just feels like a close colleague now."

Max runs his courses like a professional studio to develop artists of the future and impart the skills needed for successful careers.

He spent more than ten years as an animator at Sony Pictures Imageworks, based in its Los Angeles and Vancouver

studios. As an animation director, he acted as the link between the films' directors and their animation teams.

He said: "It's a hard job and a competitive industry but so rewarding.

"It's amazing to see your work on the big screen...In 3D animation, we're always striving for photo realism and are constantly innovating and learning new skills. It's a fun, challenging and interesting industry."

The engineering and digital technology park will have professional industry standard facilities when it opens at the Upper Bognor Road site next September.

These will include a 300sq m film studio/sound stage, 80sq m green screen studio for motion capture and chroma work and post production area of nine edit suites alongside a high quality dubbing and master suite.

There will also be recording studios, a screening theatre, Mac and PC suites, ideas labs and changing facilities.

He said: "Although the software we use is important, a 3D animator is very much an artist. It was drilled into me at my first day of university and at Sony.

"It's my aim to equip upcoming artists for careers in the world of animation and VFX. I want to improve their skills but also develop a social awareness of the industry they will find themselves in."

The new centre is part of a major expansion of the campus which will see its number of students almost double to 3,000 to put it close to the same size as the Bishop Otter campus in Chichester.

Shoppers will be able to park for free again this Christmas CHRISTMAS shoppers will have more to spend in Bognor Regis on presents thanks to free parking.

Arun District Council is again scrapping some of its charges in the runup to December 25 to encourage people to visit the town centre.

The free parking will be available on five consecutive Saturdays.

The first day on which the fees have been axed is November 25 in the Fitzleet multi-storey car park off Queensway.

This will also be free to use on December 2, 9, 16 and 23.

Two other sites will be free as well on December 2 to mark small business day

being held around the country. These are the Lyon Street and Hothamton sites.

Arun's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, said: "The free Saturday parking will allow shoppers to get everything on their list without the worry of cutting their visit short to return to the car park, which will help to support our local economy."

The free parking excludes privately run car parks. Disabled bays will also remain strictly for the use of blue badge holders only.

The two-hour blue disc free parking will still operate as well.

f Some of the staff celebrate the store's fifth anniversary COLLEAGUES at one of the biggest stores in Bognor Regis are to officially celebrate its fifth anniversary.

More than 100 workmates at Sainsbury’s will attend tomorrow night’s celebration of the milestone of the Shripney Road store.

The town’s newest superstore will hold the event at the Seasons venue at Bognor Regis FC in Nyewood Lane.

Among staff members who have been at the store since the start is Dan Challen.

The customer service team leader, aged 24, from Felpham, said working there had benefited his career.

“When I started, I was a till assistant. I transferred from the store in Rustington and we spent two weeks before the opening stocking up,” he said.

“On the first day, we had lot of people here for the grand opening.”

He briefly left to work in the travel

industry in Spain before he came back.

“I wanted to learn more about working with people and it was good to meet different people in different areas.

“But I love working here. I get on really well with my colleagues. It’s a good company to work for and working here has helped me as an individual. It’s been a really good stepping stone.

“But it has been crazy how much has changed in five years, with all the new technology. You still see a lot of people from the first day, though.”

Also among the workers who was at the store’s opening day was general assistant Noz Islam, 23. “I just love working with the people here,” he said. “They are nice colleagues to work with and the atmosphere is good.”

The store’s staffing numbers are peaking at some 350 for the Christmas build-up. Of

those, manager Angus Murray said about a third had been there since the first day.

“My colleagues working here love serving the people of Bognor Regis to the best of their abilities. It’s because of them that the store is as successful as it is.

“The business is growing in different directions, with the opening of Argos and the online shopping, which is now 20 per cent of our workforce.

“But people still love coming to do their shopping in a store. It’s all about making contact with people," he said.

“We are a communal store and the glue that holds that together is our café. It is a real meeting place and you can often hear conversations going on across tables. You can’t do that on the internet – and the views across to the South Downs are lovely.”

He said more than 100,000 customers a week visited the store.

AN £80million scheme which promises to regenerate Bognor Regis is set to be examined by a planning inspector next year.

The date for an informal hearing into the ambitious proposals by the Sir Richard Hotham Project is set to be fixed soon.

One possibility for the relaxed version of a public enquiry is for a start date on February 20.

But it is believed this depends on the availability of a location.

The hearing follows an appeal by the Sir Richard Hotham Project against the decision and will focus on the reasons why Arun District Council refused planning permission for the proposed development.

A council spokeswoman said: "Arun District Council is currently liaising with the Planning Inspectorate over potential dates for an informal hearing in relation to the appeal.

"The planning application file on the (council's) website will be updated when the council receives a 'start date' for the appeal from the inspectorate."

The fully-funded scheme promises a 1,100-seat theatre and conference centre on the Hothamton car park as well as a 48-bedroom hotel and two shops with 477 parking spaces.

For the Regis Centre, its seafront frontage will be filled with eight retail units. The rest of the site would contain a space for the Arun Arts charity which runs the current entertainments venue, 192 flats, nearly 2,000sq m of leisure and indoor leisure facilities

and a 64-bedroom hotel. A total of 335 parking spaces will be created.

On the former Esplanade Theatre site, opposite the Royal Norfolk Hotel, a 200-cover restaurant would be built and the current skatepark moved to a site on the promenade immediately west of the pier.

The scheme was rejected by Arun's development control committee last February 1.

Its members voted 11-1 to refuse planning permission because they believed the design was unsuitable and it would lead to the loss of too many parking spaces at the key sites.

They said: "The positive aspects of the proposed development are not considered to outweigh the failure of the development to demonstrate sufficient design excellence having regard to the local character and qualities of the area and the aspirations for the regeneration of the seafront and the town as a whole."

The committee was told by Hampton Smith Lambert director Neil Partlett, who worked with the project on the design: "This is a transformational proposal you have in front of you and the opportunity to make a very real difference to the retail and leisure experience in Bognor Regis town centre."

It was the second time in a year a regeneration scheme by the Sir Richard Hotham Project had been rejected by the council.

Arun has also put forward its regeneration schemes for the sites.

` Search continues THE SEARCH for missing woman, Helen Slaughter from Barnham is still underway.

Concerns have been rising for the well-being of Helen Slaughter, 48, who has been missing from her home since 6am on Wednesday November 1.

A Sussex police spokeswoman said: " There have been no further updates in missing woman Helen Slaughter.

"All lines of enquiry will be investigated."

Helen is 5ft 2in, of small build, with brown short hair and she normally wears glasses.

She was last seen wearing dark jeans, a light-coloured fleece and a woolly hat.

Helen also has a bee tattoo on her right arm and a letter H tattoo on her top left arm.

Warning over housing plans GOVERNMENT proposals could mean more housing being built around Bognor Regis, a countryside campaigner has warned.

CPRE Sussex director Kia Trainor said changes to the house-building targets being considered by ministers would increase the yearly number of 1,000 in the Arun district by another third.

She said: "The Department of Communities and Local Government has been consulting about its proposals to build the right houses in the right places.

"They would change how they would set housing targets. For the Arun district, that would mean a 30 per cent increase."

The increase would not be seen immediately in the district because its local plan would be new, once planning inspector Mark Dakeyne had issued his final decisions, but the government wanted local plans to be reviewed every five years to mean Arun's target would soon be raised, she said.

"We have been challenging this methodology locally and nationally. We are looking at housing need, not just a bigger target.

"We want more about social housing, homelessness, homes for last time buyers, homes for first-time buyers and affordable homes rather than relying on housing targets and hoping social homes get built along the way," she told Bersted Parish Council on Tuesday.

Ms Trainor said the CPRE was worried

about the district council's approach to meeting its current housing target.

"Arun is relying on large strategic sites (in Pagham and North Bersted) to build enough homes. What we have found is that, if councils rely on big sites, they can suffer from delays.

"In Chichester, they have large sites and they are not getting the housing built and that is causing a lot of difficulties.

"Councils can allocate land for development and give planning permission. But they can't make the developers build them," she said.

If councils could not meet their targets, it enabled landowners of other sites to apply for planning permission.

"That is one of the things Arun has struggled with in recent years," she said, "because their local plan is out of date.

"That's one of the reasons why planning applications come in that communities are not happy with.

"We think one way of solving this is to get Arun to look at more smaller sites."

Ms Trainor called on communities to support each other in their campaigns against unpopular housing schemes.

Bersted Parish Council chairman Cllr Brian Knight said Ms Trainor's important comments merited inviting her to a special meeting of the council.

"This gives us a lot of things to think about. Possibly, we ought to invite you back to a special meeting one evening.

"It will be just devoted to your work with the CPRE."

MP visits nursery school to find out more about funding scheme A BOGNOR REGIS nursery has hosted a fact-finding visit from the town's MP. Joint owners Lisa Richards and Tracey Betes welcomed Nick Gibb, who is also the government's schools minister, to The Old School Nursery.

Lisa said: "Nick asked to come and see the nursery school on a working day.

"He visited the Butterfly Room for three to four-year-olds and also the two to three-year-old children in the Caterpillar Room. He met all the staff and spent time with all the children. He was very interested in discussing funding and many other issues within the early years foundation stage with us as well as the nursery's manager, Tricia Sykes.

"Government funding is a key

issue right now as the 30 hours' free entitlement came in in September."

It added to the established funding for 15 hours a week childcare for two-yearolds of working parents.

"Both bring a few challenges for nurseries," said Lisa.

She and Tracey opened the nursery in Bersted Street in the area's former primary school building in 2002. The nursery has grown to 84 children on its roll.

Auschwitz trip invokes passionate emotions for Humanities students Visiting Auschwitz was an eye-opening experience. We had the privilege to visit Auschwitz 1 and 2 camps – both had sombre atmospheres due to the events that took place during WW2.

I was very tearful when I saw a display of so many tiny shoes. They made me think of my own family and how lucky I am to have a beautiful, baby brother in my life.

I was surprised at how our attitudes changed as we went round the camps. Everyone was silent and respectful.

Many were on the verge of crying at what they heard and saw.

We also had the opportunity to listen to the story of a Holocaust survivor. She had gone through so many losses and gains in her life. Anita Peck told us how she had to leave Poland quickly and eventually found her way to Brazil through Portugal. Even although she had been through so much, she managed to lead an incredibly successful life as a scientist. Now she is back in her home city of Krakow with her grandson who attends Krakow University.

Chancellor urged by head to get his school funding right

HEADTEACHER Mark Anstiss wants the Chancellor to understand one simple sum that affects his Felpham pupils.

“It’s my job to do the best I can for the pupils at this college and for the wider West Sussex community and I want to do my bit to help to achieve that,” he said.

On Tuesday, that saw him join his peers from more than 25 local education authorities from Cornwall to Cumbria to demand a fairer slice of the national funding formula.

They walked the five minute route from Parliament Square Green to Downing Street where six of them handed in a letter to Mr Hammond’s staff.

The letter informed Mr Hammond the funding formula changes announced by the education secretary, Justine Greening, two months ago failed to address the inequalities which led to the campaign being established.

It states: “It is extraordinary that some English secondary schools will receive 60 per cent less funding than others of the same size.

“Whilst cost pressures are being reduced, cost pressures in areas such as National Insurance and pensions are rising. A recent one per cent salary increase for teachers was entirely unfunded. Coupled to this is a crisis in teacher supply and retention.”

The heads said the funding formula unveiled by education secretary Justine Greening in September failed to address the issues. The £1.3bn announced was part of the £3bn removed from school budgets since 2015.

“I would be concerned about people who use the health centre at the moment and don’t have access to a car might find it difficult to get to get out of the town to the hospital," he said.

“We are in the early stages of the regeneration scheme and so we will have to wait to see what will come forward.

"But we could be having more flats for more people who will need more services and yet we could lose a building that can provide that range of services. That would be a matter of concern.

“We need consultation about this matter. That is essential. It could be that this was absolutely vital for the regeneration of the town, and people supported it and we didn’t lose services overall.

“The consultation also needs to be considered as part of the bigger picture for the town.

"We have a lot of problems caused by alcohol and anti-social behaviour in Marine ward and the space in this building could be used to help to tackle them.”

An Arun spokeswoman said it was aware of the proposals.

"The CCG is working with the council on the plans for the health centre and keeping us informed of all the developments," she said.

"The council is encouraging the NHS to determine whether the health centre site should be included alongside the Hothamton linear park plans - a project which is aimed at greatly improving this area of Bognor Regis and making it much more functional for residents."

Portable loos to return TEMPORARY toilets will be back along Bognor Regis seafront next summer.

A senior Arun District Council member said he expected the portable loos to remain on the promenade throughout the holiday season.

Cllr Trevor Bence said: "They are going to be in place for all of next summer. Everybody is reasonably content they are going to come back."

The toilets' previous use from May until last week to replace the closed underground sites had been a success.

"I understand the temporary toilets were exceptionally clean. There was not one complaint about them," he said.

The reason for the return of the stand-in loos arose because Arun had re-designed the permanent toilets with their doors facing south after complaints from residents led the council's development control committee to defer a decision in September about the plans.

The new proposals have yet to come back to the committee. Cllr Bence, Arun's cabinet member

for housing, said the delay had caused Arun to slip down the list of customers of the builders of the new loos.

"There are only two manufacturers of this type of toilets in the country," he said. "They are 'plug and play' in that they are built off-site and then installed complete and connected to the drains.

"But they have had big orders from other councils, Brighton has ordered a considerable number, and we only want one."

Cllr Bence spoke from the public gallery during Tuesday's meeting of Bersted Parish Council after parish councillors questioned Arun's trial of closing four sets of public toilets this winter.

Meanwhile, a proposal to move the toilets to the other side of Bognor Regis seafront has been ruled out. Cllr Francis Oppler's idea to put the loos on the mounds next to the town hall and just on the curtilage of the Regis Centre was dismissed at Arun's full meeting last Wednesday for being impractical because of the need to connect to the sewer beneath the prom.

Helping to put an end to sexual harassment

FOLLOWING the recent high profile sexual harassment cases, local HR and employment law specialist Sue Beeby of the HR Dept explains the steps local business owners should take to avoid damaging employment tribunal cases With more and more lurid allegations of sexual harassment coming to light every day, such as the Harvey Weinstein case, stories from ordinary people through the hashtag #MeToo and accusations against other stars, like House of Card’s Kevin Spacey, it’s time for business owners to review their policies and procedures for preventing and dealing with such allegations.

Sexual harassment complaints can often end up at an employment tribunal.

In a recent case, a factory worker won £10,000 compensation for sexual harassment after her boss wrote in her 40th birthday card that he wanted to grope her. One person’s ‘bit of banter’ is another person’s humiliation and

subsequent court case.

Another tribunal saw an HR manager with the NHS win over £800k after having been harassed after rejecting the advances of the chairman, claiming constructive dismissal, sex discrimination and sexual harassment.

Even more than the financial hit, the reputational damage to a company can be more devastating, especially if the perpetrator has a history and is in a position of power, and even more so when victims have been told to keep quiet. It is good to remember that no one is above the law and the dignity of all staff is paramount to a productive team.

Sexual harassment can include sexual comments or jokes, wrongly often explained as a bit of banter, physical behaviour, including unwelcome sexual advances, displaying pictures, photos or drawings of a sexual nature, like girly calendars (or the male equivalent) and sending emails with a sexual content.

Business owners can protect their staff from sexual harassment and their company’s reputation by having clear and unequivocal bullying and harassment policies and processes. They should make it extremely and undeniably clear that sexual harassment will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly and firmly, be it an allegation about the cleaner or the managing director.

These policies and procedures should be supported by staff training and regular reviews and updates on the standards of behaviour expected.

Residents told fight goes on SCORES of residents who turned out to back the campaign against new homes in Pagham were told it would continue into 2018.

Campaigners used the latest coffee morning held by PAGAM (Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement) to underline the fact they were determined to fight the proposals all the way.

At least 100 people went along to the first 90 minutes of the event to find out more about the efforts to keep the three fields earmarked for housing intact.

Cllr Ray Radmall, Pagham Parish Council's chairman, told them: "We will put up a tough fight against these housing plans. Why on earth are we concreting over fields and making our terrible congestion problems worse for the people of Surrey?

"No-one locally will be able to afford the new homes. Typical new homes now are priced from £295,000-£650,000. They are not affordable for people here."

Cllr Radmall was among a series of speakers at the crowded Pagham United Reformed Church Hall in Pagham Road.

One of the founders of PAGAM, Albert Homer, said: "This is probably one of the most successful events we have held.

"More and more people are starting to wake up to what is going on.

"We will be holding more events next year. We can't let this matter die away.

We have to let the public know we are still here and still talking about the problem."

Arun District Council has earmarked three sites in Pagham for up to 1,200 homes in its draft local plan. Their

locations are south of Summer Lane, Hook Lane and Sefter Road. Nearby, 2,500 homes have been proposed for fields north of Chalcraft Lane in North Bersted.

The local plan proposals are being considered by a planning inspector after he chaired an examination in public into the document in September.

Cllr Martin Lury, of Bersted Parish Council, said: "Please keep fighting. We are not going to give up on this. We will overcome.

"The Arun district is already overdeveloped. The reason for that is that you can't build up beyond Lavant because of the South Downs, so the developers come down here.

"The problem with that is that we can't get around now. How will we be able to do that when Bognor Regis and Chichester have merged?

"Nine-elevenths of the proposed development is west of the River Arun.

"Yet the only places in the district which have dual-carriageways are in the east.

That's why the houses should be built there."

Cllr David Huntley, a Pagham Parish Council member, claimed the proposed development would destroy the routes between the Pagham Harbour local nature reserve and the South Downs used by wildlife.

"Arun is not doing its job and protecting this area," he said.

PAGAM's sister group, BAD DEAL, from Bersted and Aldwick, and the Campaign to Protect Rural England were also present at the coffee morning.

Arts centre trustees splash the cash on repairing roof WELL over £80,000 has been recently spent improving the entertainment centre in Bognor Regis, councillors have been told.

Pat Dillon said the Arun Arts charity had invested £32,000 in replacing the leaking glass roof of the Regis Centre and £50,000 on improvements to its foyer. This included new furniture.

"Certainly, money has been spent on the building," he told town councillors at their meeting last week.

"Members of the public who have walked through have been pleased with the way we have raised the spirit of the building. We have also improved

the programme of shows."

The glass roof had leaked every day it had rained since Arun Arts, of which he is a member, had taken on the centre's running with its Alexandra Theatre and studio and meeting room.

The Regis Centre is the focus of a regeneration scheme by its owner, Arun District Council, for a winter gardens attraction. But Cllr Dillon (C, Pevensey) said: "The building is safe. That is why we are spending so much time and money on bringing it up to a good standard of repair. It's a community hub. It's being used by a wide range of people every day."

A BOGNOR REGIS man has shared his grief after the death of a friend for a charity's new awareness campaign.

Jack Trott has written a chapter for a powerful booklet for young people who need to navigate their emotions after the tragic and sudden death of a close friend.

The booklet, A friend's grief following a young sudden cardiac death, has been compiled by CRY's founder and bereavement counsellor, Alison Cox MBE. Jack became involved with CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) after his friend, David Green, died suddenly in December, 2010, from a previously undiagnosed heart condition. He was aged just 19.

As part of his chapter, Jack writes: "Although it was so many years ago, I still think about the night my sister and my dad turned up at my flat that I shared with my girlfriend to tell me he had died.

"I couldn't believe what they were

saying, that my mate had died suddenly in his sleep.

"At that time, we had no idea how this had happened, and it seemed so unbelievable.

"I remember feeling totally numb, not really taking anything in. Nothing made sense any more."

Jack is among 29 brave and bereaved young people who have talked through their experience of coping with the gap left by their friend.

The booklet is part of a wider campaign #CRY4Friends, which the charity hopes will encourage young people to share their memories and to talk openly about their grief.

The bereavement support team at CRY developed the booklet for its 'grief library' knowing bereaved people find most solace, support and guidance from others who have been through a similar experience. It is available free from cry4friends.org.uk

Women urged to use power

` Organisers meet A MEETING is to be held between the organisers of two popular Bognor Regis events.

Those behind the kite festival and the illuminations gala will be getting together to ensure arrangements are made for both of them to take place together again in 2018.

This year was the first time both had been held on the August bank holiday weekend - three days for the kites and one for the gala.

A plea for better planning from Arun District Council, which needs to sanction both events from the West Park area, was made at last week's meeting by Lib Dem member Cllr Francis Oppler (Orchard). He said the gala's organisers struggled with lining up its floats in Silverston Avenue for the seafront parade.

"There was also the noise and inconvenience for the residents as well," he said. He was backed by Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham).

Writing on social media later, kite festival joint organiser Sarah Boote-Cook stated: "As this was the first year that both events had run together, the organising committees will meet and discuss the way forward for 2018 and, if there are problems, we can rectify them."

Those responsible for both events had met with Arun to discuss the situation and would meet each other before the end of the year.

"Feedback from the public regarding the whole weekend and the two events working together was fantastic and Bognor Regis can be proud of having given three days of fun with sunshine and free events to residents and visitors," she said.

Crocuses planted around the town TENS OF thousands of purple crocuses have been planted across the Bognor Regis area.

Members of Bognor Regis Rotary and Bognor Hotham Rotary clubs have spent the past month putting almost 40,000 of them into the ground.

Brian Clarke, press officer of Bognor Hotham Rotary Club, said: "Spring should be purple in so many areas around Bognor Regis. Fingers are crossed for an amazing splash of colour to remind us all of a success story and what a devastating disease polio can be if allowed to remain unchecked."

The purple crocus is the symbol of the worldwide campaign by Rotary to eradicate polio. Each child who is immunised has a finger marked with purple dye to show they have taken part.

"We laughed, sang and listened to lifechallenging teaching from Merle under the title of Born to be Blessed and to be a blessing.

Felpham Village Conservation Society and friends in Middleton helped with plantings around Old Rectory Gardens, Longbrook Park, Snook's Corner and Middleton's village pond.

Another 8,000 bulbs were planted in Hotham Park to add to the 8,000 dug in last year. BT agreed to several thousand corms being planted outside its building in Gloucester Road.

Rotarians also hope to plant the 1,000 or so bulbs left close to the barn next to Aldwick Duck Pond in Aldwick Road.

Suitable signs at the sites will highlight the End Polio Now campaign.

Poppy crosses and wreaths paid tribute to those who protected us SEVEN decades vanished in the moment it took Jeannette Dace to plant a poppy cross at the Bognor Regis war memorial.

Mrs Dace thought back to her late father and the service he gave to his country when she continued her tradition of taking part in Remembrance Sunday. She placed the cross in the grass at the end of the annual service to remember those who fought and died for this country.

She said: “That cross is for my father and all the men and women who are fighting for us now.

“It’s important to do this. It’s a special day. It honours their memory. I’ve been coming to this service for 43 years and there are six of us across four generations of my family here today.”

The late father of Mrs Dace, 78, of Cottage Close, Rose Green, was a soldier in the Far East in the Second World War for about four years.

Sergeant Walter Headley-Knights was captured by the Japanese in Burma, now known as Myanmar, and was a prisoner of war.

“I have recently found out that there’s a lot of information about him in Burma,” said Mrs Dace.

“My niece went there on holiday to the bridge over the River Kwai in the area where was captured. When she spoke to the Army personnel there, she was told they knew a lot about my father.

“She also went to Kew Gardens in London and there is information about him there as well.

“It makes me feel proud to think he is

still remembered like this. He didn’t talk about the war much when he came back or the camps he was in.

“But I have a lot of his stuff and we had some translated from Japanese and it shows how he was moved around different camps.

“He was fortunate in the camp he was sent to. If he had gone to another camp, he would have been shot.”

About 1,000 people of all ages were present at the 40-minute service. They included hundreds who took part in the parade along Belmont Street to the war memorial outside the town hall.

Father Andrew Wadsworth, the Vicar of St Wilfrid’s Church, told them it was important young people in groups like the Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Sea Cadets and St John Ambulance were among them.

“It is vital they are here because this service promotes the very values the service personnel and civilians in the Second World War fought and died for in the spirit of service and sacrifice.

“This annual commemoration takes us out of our daily concerns of mortgages, work pressures and the demands of dayto-day living to a wider perspective of world wars and what they do to us – the loss of innocence, death and destruction and unmitigated violence in the unbridled pursuit of power.”

He listed a roll call of conflicts in which British servicemen and women had fought since the Second World War and said it was important to recall them as well.

“We face different challenges today but the world is dangerous as we know this year from the terrorist attacks in Manchester and London,” he said.

Standard bearer for the TS Sir Alec Rose Sea Cadets was Callum Birh, 14. He said: “I was proud to carry the standard. It’s an honour to be chosen for the service where we remember those who died in the wars.”

The standard from the Royal Canadian Legion’s branch in Regina – probably the event’s first overseas standard – was carried by Tim Hunter, its vice-president.

He said: “It was a phenomenal event and an honour to take part. It looked like we had people from the whole town of Bognor Regis here.

“Our service in Canada is much the same, except that we announce who is laying the wreaths.”

After the service, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb said the service summed up the patriotism people felt for their country.

"I look out there and see hundreds of people of our town who came today to support our Remembrance Sunday.

"There is nothing wrong with patriotism. It's about being part of something bigger than yourself," he said.

"It's about being proud of your country. It's about being proud of your town. It's a time to start thinking about others."

` Residents drop-in SESSIONS are being held next week to enable Bognor Regis residents to raise issues of concern with their councillors.

The drop-in events will take place from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm next Wednesday at Bognor Regis Youth and Community Centre in Westloats Lane. Councillors from Bognor Regis, Arun and West Sussex councils will be attending.

The advice events are being held by Bognor Regis Town Council as part of its ongoing programme of giving as many residents as possible the chance to meet councillors.

The previous day had seen an attempted burglary of a property in Bassett Road, Bognor Regis, from 9pm-11.20pm. On November 6, an attempt was made at about 5.40pm to get into a property via the kitchen door in Westminster Drive, Aldwick.

` New civic award TOWN councillors are to consider launching a civic or citizen's award for young people in Bognor Regis.

The idea is being looked into by the community engagement and environment committee of the town council.

If it is agreed, the award will be presented at the town mayor's civic reception each year.

Helping keep Felpham safe VOLUNTEERS of the Felpham Emergency Resilience Team were presented with special equipment on Monday evening.

The helpers, who are the only parish in Bognor Regis to have a resilience team, met at the Felpham Community Hall with members of West Sussex Fire and Rescue for a special presentation.

The group, which was set up over a year ago, was founded by Felpham parish councillor Mrs Gloria Moss.

She began to advertise for volunteers for the resilience team and about 1520 people attended her initial meeting.

Among them was Dave Smart, with extensive experience of attending numerous major rail accidents and subsequent inquiries.

He has since joined the parish council and supported Cllr Mrs Moss as the volunteers' training sessions began.

Further sessions have been held by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service at Bognor Regis fire station.

Resilience and emergency team adviser for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Chris Scott, said: "This is not just about emergencies, it is also a community bonding experience. There are lots of activities for groups to get involved with.

"We are looking at the different types of tasks which communities can get involved with and have a focus on keeping people safe and being seen.

"These groups help people in the community to do proactive work. For example, in the autumn, drains can become blocked with leaves. It's about making people aware that it takes just two minutes to move the leaves from outside their home to prevent drains

from blocking and flooding occurring."

Among the items provided were road signs, high visibility jackets, torches, shovels and glow sticks which were funded by West Sussex County Council working with parishes across the county.

Cllr Mrs Moss said: "This is proving that we are now a relevant and active team who can deliver a response in the event of an adverse emergency occurrence.

We are now prepared."

The volunteers have been trained to

assist the emergency services whenever floods, power failures or extreme weather threaten to cause large-scale disruption. Their efforts are intended to save lives and property and reduce inconvenience in situations such as flash floods which caused extensive damage across Felpham in June, 2012.

Cllr Dave Smart said: "The sessions cover basic first aid, communications and the use of radio systems, table top exercises as well as planning and

preparation.

"The scenarios we provide show us how the team would respond. This will all continue to evolve. It is important to have on the ground resources."

Jill's plea for PoW relatives A NORTH BERSTED woman wants remembrance weekend to draw attention to former wartime prisoners of the Japanese.

Jill Robertson is a member of the Children of Far Eastern Prisoners of War. Her father, Stanley Moore, was held in the infamous Changi jail for three-anda-half years in the Second World War. She said: "My dad mentioned a few things about being a prisoner but he did

keep a diary, which was tiny.

"I am area co-ordinator for the charity for West Sussex. Membership is open to all surviving FEPOWs, their children, their grandchildren and all immediate family members.

"The charity was set up by a woman called Carol Cooper, who did not know her father.

"She had been born prior to his going to the Far East but he never came back.

She was destined to never know him."

By chance, his diary was found in the jungle. Carol finally got ownership of it and found the inspiration to form the charity as the old-guard of prisoners of war in the Far East were dwindling away.

"As a tribute to her father, she was successful in establishing the charity and a museum at the national arboretum in Lichfield, Staffordshire. This is now home to CoFEPOW," said Jill, 62.

Her father was captured in the fall of Singapore on February 15, 1942.

"Since August, 1940, he had been posted to the 291 Company of the Royal Army Service Corps, within the 18th Division. The division sailed from Liverpool in October, 1941, taking the long, top secret route via south America and Cape Town.

"Their intended destination was

unknown to the regular soldier. They thought they were going to the desert and in through the back door via the Middle East.

"On December 7, when Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese, this destination was changed.

"They sailed towards India and, on January 29, 1942, they sailed into Kepple Harbour, Singapore. They were there to protect and fight for the final jewel in the crown of the British Empire, against the Imperial Japanese Army."

Jill, of Violet Close, said she would be glad to hear of anyone else's stories of their relatives' time in the Far East during the war from the end of 1941 to the end of 1945.

TEMPORARY housing for homeless people is to be bought by Arun District Council.

Councillors agreed unanimously last week to spend up to ÂŁ1.1m on suitable homes for those who are desperate for roofs over their heads.

Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick W), the council's leader, told them: "Not only is this a good financial deal for the council, but will also provide good quality temporary accommodation for people who need their own homes."

The homes will be self-contained and help to cut the council's spending on rooms with private landlords.

The money is in addition to the ÂŁ1m the council agreed to buy suitable properties for homeless people.

` McDonald's open TABLE service is being started at the new look McDonald's branch in Bognor Regis.

Franchisee Grant Cooper will launch the service when the branch in Oldlands Way opens next Tuesday. His move follows the success of the service in other restaurants because it takes the stress out of finding somewhere to sit while carrying food.

It also means children do not have to be left on their own when their parents order meals.

Self-order kiosks will enable other customers to customise their food.

Mr Cooper said: "These changes are designed to make our customers' experience as positive as possible."

Service recalls war for Korean veteran TEARS filled the eyes of former soldier James McGrory at Aldwick's service of remembrance.

The short tribute to those who had been killed fighting for their country brought back memories of the friends who had died in the two campaigns in which he fought.

He spent three years in the British Army in the Korean War and the Malaya insurgency in the fifties.

"I come to this service every year," he said. "I have lot of memories for the people who didn't quite make it with me.

"It was a simple service but I thought it was a perfect way to remember them the mates that I lost.

Mr McGrory, 86, of Mill Park Road, Pagham, was a corporal. He spent the first part of his military service in the army's headquarters in the Korean War ensuring the front line was supplied with the correct weapons.

This was followed by a period as the only British corporal in charge of the Gurkhas.

He was among about 100 people who gathered in the light rain at Aldwick's war memorial in the millennium gardens for the service at the traditional armistice time of 11am on November 11.

Aldwick Parish Council chairman Cllr Lilian Richardson told them: "This is a simple service that we hold every year.

"We hold it because, some years ago, some of our parishioners got together and thought it would be a fitting way to commemorate the dead of both our

great wars."

Cllr Mrs Richardson laid the first of five wreaths during the 15 minute service at the site off Pryors Lane.

by Max Bruce, an 11-year-old cadet with the TS Montrose Nautical Training Corps for just under two years.

He said: "I feel this is a good way to

remember those who died in the wars.

It shows we remember those who gave their lives for us."

A nine-strong TS Montrose contingent attended the service. First Officer Paul Nicholls said: "This is the first time Max has worn his uniform.

"He has worked hard to get it and he did well."

f Residents pay their respects in Aldwick * WARTIME graves of two of the RAF's first casualties are to be tended by a Bognor Regis service personnel group.

The resting places of Lt Norman England and Lt Victor Craigie are being adopted by the town's branch of the RAFA (Royal Air Forces Association).

Details of the deaths of the men, among the three involved in a fatal mid-air collision in the First World War, were read to a record turnout at the Remembrance Sunday service at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital.

Cliff Mewett, the branch's chairman, and its secretary, David Hewings, outlined the incident.

Mr Hewings said the adoption of the graves would take place for the centenary of the deaths next April 6.

The men were buried at St Andrew's Church in Oving and a special service would be held on the anniversary. A flypast of historic aircraft was planned.

The collision occurred when the men were training in the newly formed 92 Squadron in the first week of the RAF. "It does not mean to say we should think any less of them because they

were not killed in battle.

"They were probably people who had served in the trenches before they came to training," he said. "They knew what the risks were, they took the risks and they paid the price for us."

All three officers in the collision were stationed at Tangmere. Lt England, 31, a flying instructor, and Clifford Hackman, 20, were in a two-seater Avro bomber/trainer, and Lt Craigie, 26, was on his first flight in a singleseater Scout. The two aircraft collided about 300ft above the edge of the airfield. Lt England lived in Oving and Lt Craigie came from Canada, having grown up in Binsted.

Sunday afternoon's service saw some 100 people filling every available space around the town's First World War roll of honour in the hospital.

It was led by the hospital's chaplain, the Rev Graham Reeves, and organised by the Friends of the hospital.

Friends' chairman Brian Knight said: "I'm very pleased with the turnout, especially when you think this is the fifth year we've held the service and about a dozen people turned up for the first one."

Armistice Day remembered RESIDENTS gathered outside Bognor Regis Town Hall last Saturday to pay their respects for Armistice Day. RAFA 381 branch members held the service at the memorial in Clarence Road at 11am to mark the end of the First World War. Included among the representatives were branch chairman Malcom Dewey, Ann and David Hewings and Cliff Mewett.

Peter Charman, from Bognor Regis, said: "My late wife and I used to come on the 11th and Remembrance Sunday every year and I still come on my own.

"I wasn't in the services as I just missed national service but my mother's father was in the first war and he had his legs shattered through injury.

"I also had a relative on my dad's side of

the family who died of his wounds and his brother is out there somewhere, his body was never found.

"It is really important we continue to hold these services and remember. These people sacrificed more than any other generation can ever repay.

"It is good to see young people turn out, it's a tradition that shouldn't just be dropped. I hope it continues for centuries."

Mark Norrell and his wife, Estelle, from Bognor Regis, attended together. Mark said: "We have come to pay our respects to all the people who lost their lives which has allowed us the freedom we have today.

"We both have relatives who fought in the First World War and it is important that none of us forgets."

` New Xmas lights NEW LIGHTING is being bought to brighten up Christmas in Bognor Regis.

The town council has agreed to purchase the pea lights to be installed in the six trees along the London Road precinct.

The decision was made on Monday after councillors were told two sets of scaffolding in the town centre had meant one of the intended illuminated festive displays could not be installed.

Council projects officer Sheila Hodgson said it had been initially feared three of the displays would be ruled out because of the building works in York Road and the precinct.

But talks with the site managers had enabled the York Road display to go ahead and one of the others outside Boots in the precinct.

"We have come up with an alternative plan to put pea lights in the trees to make up for the missing display," she told the extraordinary meeting of the events, promotion and leisure committee.

"The lights were really effective at the Proms in the Park and they are solarpowered to reduce running costs."

The committee agreed to spend ÂŁ180 on the lights, ready for the Christmas lights switch-on of the 11 displays in the town centre on November 25.

Mrs Hodgson said the situation had shown the presence of scaffolding in the town centre needed to be logged.

"I've talked to highways officers and there should not be scaffolding in the town centre for Christmas.

"The good thing about this situation is that it has flagged up that if anybody wants to put up scaffolding we have to be able to say to them it needs to come down later in the year," she added.

The committee members agreed to ask Boots to sponsor the new lighting.

College to turn purple to help to fight polio f First aid training in action

Pupils' lessons in providing first aid TRAINING to save lives has been completed by hundreds of Felpham Community College pupils.

Its Year 7 students have been the first in to attend mini workshops in the autumn in the essential subject.

They focused on the primary survey of the casualty and the recovery position, danger response, burns and bleeding and cardiac pulmonary resuscitation. The British Heart Foundation donated 20 resuscitation dolls to the college on condition one in five of its pupils are trained each year in essential first aid.

One of the students who took part, Fearne Dewar, said: "Everything we were shown was useful and you learned when you would have to do it.

STUDENTS and staff have ensured Felpham Community College will be turning purple next spring.

The volunteers planted a purple crocus bulb for each of the college's 1,400 pupils as part of the campaign to wipe out polio.

This is the second year the college has joined with Bognor Regis Rotary Club as part of the movement's worldwide efforts to eradicate the disabling disease.

College senior assistant headteacher Michelle Kelly said: "Last year, we planted 1,400 bulbs in November and we held a community tea party in the spring term to celebrate the bulbs flowering

and decorating the school campus with the colour.

"Felpham have recently obtained our Rights Respecting Schools Level 2 award which shows our commitment to campaigning for change.

"This was an ideal opportunity to get involved again and to help raise awareness of an awful disease that needlessly still affects so many people.

"We are looking to the sea of purple again in the spring."

The Rotary campaign wants to make sure the vaccination can be made available to people all over the world.

"It was good having the training split up into three little workshops as it kept us focused and learning different skills."

The workshops were organised by some of the college's St John Ambulance cadets - Poppy Shallis, Issy Saunders and Charlie Cogger with college staff.

They followed the college's initial first aid training for students last summer. These pupils, now in Year 8, said the sessions would be useful earlier in the year.

Nicole Matthews, Year 7 leader and organiser of the event, said: "As a school, we now organise first aid training every year for our Year 7 students."

It has lasted for 30 years and has seen the condition restricted to just three countries. Purple is the campaign's colour because that is the dye which vaccinated children receive on their fingers to show they have been included.

Jackson Voight, a Year 8 student, said: "It is good that we are taking part for a second year and that we can keep students aware of the dangers of polio.

"I took part in the planting last year at college and at Hotham Park with the planting that was done there as part of the local campaign."

Lemon flavour provides wine with plenty of zest Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

AS AUTUMN turns more hibernal with the return of old Jack Frost, off I trekked to Majestic in Chichester to do a little bit of wine–tasting, ably accompanied by wine guru eloquent Ellie.

We began by tasting the 2016 Quinta De Azevedo Vinho Verde priced at a November offer price of just £5.99, if one of six bottles purchased and all subsequent bottles are subject to this

caveat.

Wow! This was not your cheap and cheerful Vinho Verde, but in fact a superior wine with this blend of 95 per cent Loureiro and five per cent Arinto sporting white floral aromas complementing lemony intensity with a hint of spritz, good acidity and a clean finish - the ideal apéritif à mon avis!

For an outlay of £7.49, the 2016 Villemarin Picpoul de Pinet Ormarine was the next tasting and sporting a nose of lemon and lime, it proved to be a particularly lemony Picpoul, a grape variety which ripens late and thus benefits from end-of-season humidity to finally mature. This wine would complement fresh oysters or any type of shellfish.

For the exact same price, I next sampled a 2016 López de Haro Rioja Bianco and I was intrigued to discover my reaction to a wine I had not tasted for a few years. Well, most remiss of me, as this wine exudes ripe fruit flavours including hints of banana and comes from vines aged between 50 and 80 years old on the foothills of the Tolono mountains - one well worth a try. A perfect accompaniment to a roast chicken dish also.

My final white tasting involved an erstwhile favourite of mine, namely a 2016 Passimento Bianco in the heart of Valpolicella in the province of Verona and featuring the Garganega grape. For an offer price of £8.99, this wine has a creamy, rich mouth-feel balanced by bright acidity, and notes of citrus

afford it a crisp feeling with a touch of sweetness from the strong peach flavours - a beautifully -balanced wine with a lingering finish which could pair easily with all sorts of cuisine - a lovely summer tipple.

In terms of red wines, a 2016 Carmanere Errazuriz caught my eye for a November offer price of just £7.99 and is another Chilean masterpiece with a nose of fruit, wood and earth and dark fruit flavours on the palate culminating in a long spicy finish. This young wine has a taste of maturity and merits your attention.

My second red selection came when I spied, with my little eye, a Wakefield Estate 2015 Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon mindful of the fact that it is the leading family-owned winery in Australia and that chief winemaker Adam Eggins recently surpassed all

rivals to procure the prestigious prize of Australian winemaker of the year.

This medium-bodied wine, for an offer price of just £8.99, has firm structure with great intensity and distinctive blackcurrant and cassis flavours and French oak maturation leads to delicate aromas of cedar and dark chocolate with subtle spice - a complex wine with fine tannins and a lingering finish and one to drink now or keep until about 2023. A veritable delight of a wine and one I commend to you sans aucune réservation.

Method

INGREDIENTS SAUCE • 4 tbsp honey • 2 tbsp soy sauce (all purpose or light soy sauce) • 1 tbsp white vinegar (or sub with any other vinegar except balsamic) • 1 large garlic clove (or 2 small) , minced

SALMON • 2 salmon or trout fillets, skinless (6oz / 200g each) • Olive oil • Salt and pepper

OPTIONAL GARNISHES • Sesame seeds • Finely sliced chives or shallots/scallions

of spice and vanilla oak leading on to ripe, dark berry fruits, soft tannins and a long finish.

The strangely shaped bottle might deter you, but be bold and savour this flavoursome example.

My final red wine selection was that of a 2012 Conde de San Cristobel Ribera del Duero priced at £14.99 and the very wine that Michelle Obama and her mother enjoyed during Barack Obama's state visit to Cuba in March, 2016. Blackberry, liquorice, tar and smoke abound in this complex wine which singularly fails to disappoint with summer fruits to the fore and a silkiness to admire. A un de ces jours!

1. Take salmon out of the fridge 20 minutes before cooking. Pat salmon skin dry with a paper towel and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

2. Whisk together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.

3. Drizzle oil in a non stick fry pan and heat over medium high heat (or just under, if your stove runs hot). Place salmon in the pan, and cook the first side for 3 minutes. Turn, then cook the other side for 2 minutes, or to taste.

4. Pour sauce over salmon.

Cook for 1 minute or until it starts to thicken slightly. Check the side of the salmon to tell how cooked through the middle is - I like mine rare inside. (Note 1). If sauce thickens too much before your salmon is cooked to your taste, just add water 1 tbsp at a time.

5. Remove onto serving plates.

6. Serve salmon drizzled with sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds and chives/shallots, if desired.

INGREDIENTS • 125 g / 1 stick unsalted butter, melted • 1½ cups/ 225 g plain flour (all purpose flour) • 1½ cups / 135 g rolled oats (traditional oats, not quick, instant or steel cut) • ½ cup / 110 g brown sugar • ½ tsp baking powder • Pinch of salt • 1 egg • 2/3 cup strawberry jam

STRAWBERRIES • 2 cups chopped strawberries (about 375g) • 2 tbsp white sugar • 2 tsp cornflour / cornstarch

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180C/350 (fan forced). (Note 1) 2. Spray a 20cm/9" square tin with oil and line with baking/parchment paper with overhang (so it can be lifted out once cooked).

3. Mix together flour, oats, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add butter and egg then mix.

4. Measure out 1 cup of the mixture (for topping) and set aside. Place remaining mixture in the

tin and press into base.

5. Mix together Strawberries, sugar and cornflour in a bowl (don't do this in advance because sugar will make strawberries sweat = runny filling).

6. Spread base with jam (Note 2), then scatter over strawberries. Use your hands to crumble the remaining mixture over the top (Note 3).

7. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is deep golden. Remove and allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tin before lifting out of the tin using the baking paper. It will sag - don't worry, it will set.

8. Cut into squares. Serve at room temperature. Store in airtight container (in fridge if it's very hot where you are).

A little ray of sunshine to help boost your vitamin D WITH THE risk of annoying each and every one of you, I wondered if I should tell you where I am at the moment, or just pretend I am in the UK? I thought I might chance it, in the hope that you may have some sympathy for me knowing I am working really hard!

Its about six in the evening, the last rays of sunlight are disappearing, but fortunately it's still 30 degrees, and fortunately I am sitting by a pool on a rooftop terrace in Dubai!

But it’s not what you think. I am just embarking on the first of many work trips to Dubai. I am making it out to be very glamorous, but actually I am working extremely hard, very long hours, and this is the first time I have seen daylight in four days!

I am delivering health seminars to corporate companies around stress management and nutrition. So far, so good! I was very nervous on day one, as my first audience consisted of 65 people and I had 18 different nationalities to present to, so it was a little out of my comfort zone to say the least.

It's so interesting, as I am finding out, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, or what your position is within a company, most people who live in a westernised society and work within a high performing successful business are suffering from anxiety, exhaustion and deficiencies.

What’s even more tragic is that most of the people I have seen here have severe vitamin D deficiencies.

How can this be?

They live in one of the hottest climates in the world, have pretty much wall-to-wall sunshine 365 days a years, and yet they are deficient. Why? Because they live their lives in air-conditioned buildings, and rarely go outside during the week as they are working all through daylight hours.

Did you know that even if it's cloudy outside you will still get a good fix of vitamin D? How about improving your creativity?

Being outside not only gives you your vitamin D fix, but boosts your creativity. If you’re trying to solve a problem or come up with a brilliant idea, take a walk in some good old-fashioned fresh air. Apparently, walking increases 81 per cent of creativity!

Better concentration?

Among children with ADHD, spending time in nature leads to improvements in focus and higher scores on concentration tests.

There are some opinions suggesting that this condition is made much worse due to the amount of time children spend indoors.

Exercising in nature.

'Green exercise', which is exercise in the presence of nature, has unique benefits above and beyond many expectations.

Physical activity outdoors, even for as little as five minutes, leads to measurable improvements in mood and self-esteem.

Apparently, one in ten people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D. Researchers have noted that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in adults of all ages who have increased skin pigmentation, such as those whose ancestors are from Africa, the Middle East, or India, or who always wear sun protection or limit their outdoor activities.

So the message is, increasing your vitamin D levels is vitally important, whereever you live in the world, as increasing levels of vitamin D3 among the general population could prevent chronic diseases that claim nearly one million lives throughout the world each year and incidence of several types of cancer could also be slashed in half. It also fights infections, including colds and the flu, as it regulates the expression of genes that influence your immune system to attack and destroy bacteria and viruses.

I firmly believe that appropriate sun exposure is the best way to optimise your vitamin D levels, and the more time you spend outdoors, the easier it will be for you to naturally absorb this important vitamin.

Community News & Views SOME of the biggest employers throughout West Sussex are taking steps to keep flu at bay by offering free flu vaccinations to all staff.

Hundreds of employees at West Sussex County Council and the NHS in the area have taken advantage of the opportunity.

Both organisations are encouraging as many people as possible to protect themselves from flu as well. This winter staff in the council and the health service will come into contact with thousands of members of the public. They believed it was vital they took steps to help people to stay well.

Marianne Griffiths, chief executive of St Richard's Hospital operator Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "It's widely believed the coming flu season will be severe.

"Working in hospitals, we have a higher risk of catching flu and many of us could experience no symptoms, yet still pass it on to our loved ones, colleagues and, of course, the people we care for."

Since October, the council and NHS in West Sussex have been encouraging residents to go and get the flu jab.

But they are now putting out the call to employers who can encourage their staff to go and get the jab too.

The hope is that, the more people are vaccinated in the community, the less opportunity there is for flu to spread.

County council senior advisor for adults and health, Ashvin Patel, said: "Offering a free flu jab to staff has been a really key step in trying to keep our council teams well.

"We hope this step will reduce sickness and allow us to keep much-needed services running for our residents.

"It will also prevent our frontline staff passing on flu to some of the more 'at risk' residents that we work with."

MEMBERS of Donnington Gardening Club were given an interesting and illustrated insight at their latest meeting into a nature reserve.

Helen Beal, voluntary warden at Kingley Vale Nature Reserve, spoke about the natural life of the 500 acres of chalk grassland and yew forest which made it one of the most important sites of its kind in southern England.

Club press officer Lawrence Holloway said: "It contains 11 species of orchids, many 2,000-year-old yew trees, several species of bats, 39 recorded species of butterflies and moths and 14 scheduled ancient monuments.

"The most important butterfly on the reserve is the Chalkhill Blue, whose caterpillars feed on Horseshoe Vetch and have an international relationship with ants. Recently, there were 200300 Chalkhill Blues in the studied colony."

The 20th century ecologist, Sir Arthur Tansley, who was an English botanist, lobbied for decades to get Kingley Vale protected in some way.He was instrumental in getting it chosen as a national nature reserve in the late 1940s.

At the top of the reserve, a few hundred metres from the Devil's Hump, there is a monument to him called the Tansley Stone. It looks out from Brow Hill over one of the most breathtaking views over Sussex.

After being cremated on November 29, 1955, his ashes were scattered in Kingsley Vale.

"Much of the vegetation in Kingley Vale is controlled on a rotation basis by Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloway cattle, which carry out the very important job of grazing down the grasses to enable the many wildflowers to grow and prosper," added Mr Holloway.

"The chalk grasslands are very fragile and must be carefully conserved. Roe, Fellow and Mountjac deer are able to feed on the vegetation of the yew trees as they not toxic to deer."

BOGNOR library-users are being asked for their feedback over plans for the garden.

Staff at the town library in London Road are working on increasing the usage on the garden and want community feedback.

Library manager Christine Broggi said: "We are working with the Aldingbourne Trust to explore how we can make the most of the Bognor Regis Library Garden as a community resource, secure funding and engage the interest of the local residents.

WATER quality in rivers and lakes in southern England and northern France will be improved in a multi-million euro project led by the University of Chichester.

The European funding will aim to reduce nutrient levels in the waterways to counter the current situation where only 30-40 per cent of waters entering the English Channel are classed as 'good ecological status'.

This is largely because of the high level of nitrates and phosphates in the water as a result of intensive farming.

The €4m project being organised by the university will implement six pilot PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services) schemes across the Channel area.

The schemes will offer financial incentives to farmers and land managers to encourage them to implement more environmentally friendly methods of farming, such as ploughing orientation, targeted use of fertilisers and planting trees.

These should help to greatly reduce the level of run-off from fields and nutrients in the water system.

The six pilot areas will include the River Rother in West Sussex and the Lac au Duc in Brittany. They will target 90 farms and land managers as well as 18 water quality companies.

Professor Dave Cooper, from the University of Chichester, said: "We are delighted to have secured this European funding.

"The CPES project offers an exciting opportunity to work with partners from both the UK and France to find a sustainable and effective way of improving the quality of the water entering the English Channel and reducing the costs of treating drinking water."

The initial six sites will allow a toolkit to be made available to other water companies and land managers in other locations.

This toolkit will act as a template that can be used to create other commercially sustainable PES schemes across the country.

They will be intended to offer a more cost effective method of improving water quality which currently involves water companies managing nutrient levels in drinking water by blending high and low nitrate water sources.

The cross-border project between the UK and France will total €4m funded by the Interreg France (Channel) England programme. A total of 11 organisations from both countries will be involved in the three-and-a-half year project.

MORE than 100 competitors took part in the annual It's A Knockout contest held by Bognor Regis Lions Club, pictured above.

The club joined with its sister clubs from Chichester, Midhurst, Worthing and Southbourne to hold the event for adults with learning difficulties.

The event was held at Arena Sports Centre in Bognor Regis and consisted of a number of fun games which were enthusiastically contested during the day.

The overall winner was L'Arche in Bognor Regis, with Ferring receiving the Spirit of Knockout trophy.

Tammy Fells, the Bognor club's membership secretary, said: "If the noise levels throughout the day were anything to go by, the competitors had a very enjoyable time.

"The invited guests included the town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many competitors with learning difficulties attending the event.

Nine centres had competitors involved in the fun - L'Arche, Wrenford Centre, Apuldram, Fitzalan Howard, Aldingbourne, The Pines, Ferring, The Centre and Oak Community."

Range of historic buildings still exists in town Ice House is far from the only structure from town's early days ONE DAY when I was talking with a group of people, discussing Bognor Regis, a woman angrily remarked: 'It has been ruined; there is nothing old left, only the Ice House!’.

Sadly, this is the kind of negative comment that is widely 'thrown around' by many people, a number of whom are Bognorians.

That will start you talking!

However, why do so many people, like me, come here to live, work and retire? We have so much history and many old buildings still with us today that I thought we could take a look at some of our heritage.

Initially, we should remember it was only in 1787 Sir Richard Hotham laid the foundation stone of this seaside resort, recorded in the Parish Registry at South Bersted Church, which has celebrated its 610th anniversary.

Sir Richard Hotham started by building the likes of Spencer Terrace, The Dome, and St Michael’s to bring people into his resort.

When private individuals sold these properties, they were used for years as educational centres. Now, some of these buildings have been sold and converted into flats and apartments to attract more people to the area – as Sir Richard had planned.

We, of course, still have a central park area, which was once the back garden of Sir Richard Hotham’s home, now known to Bognor Regis

residents as Hotham Park House.

What else do we have? We have the Royal Norfolk Hotel from the 1820s, which still overlooks the seafront, and, of course, we have the fishermen (not the original ones you understand!) There are a number of original fishermen’s cottages around the West Street and Aldwick Road area. Our original shopping centre was West Street and, while we have new flats built there, there are quite a number of original constructions.

Along The Esplanade there is The Royal Hotel, which was known as the Manor House. The Steyne and Waterloo Square were constructed around the 1820s and 30s and many of these buildings have remained unchanged since this time.

What about the railway station constructed in 1902 and also The Arcade, which was constructed during the building boom of the early 20th century? Across the road, buildings were rising, such as the corner of London Road, where originally Staley’s moved to in 1914 from the High Street and which is today the premises of Bon Marche.

If we take the time to travel around the town and other areas we can find many constructions that have withstood the passage of time. The Church of St Thomas a’ Becket in Pagham has celebrated its 800th

anniversary.

In 1957, Gerard Young wrote in one of his weekly articles: 'I can remember hollyhock growing in Bognor High Street'. He continued much in the vein in which I am writing this week.

In the 1960s, when the Queen Victoria drinking fountain was found in the council yard, a councillor said we should leave it where it was and not look back, but look forward to 2000. The final decision was that it should be preserved and we still have this fountain today, standing now at the seaward end of Steyne Gardens.

I know about the sand, the Kursaal and the Pavilion! I know the opening of the Butlin’s camp in 1960 did not meet with approval – and so many people still do not acknowledge that Butlin’s arrival was really in the 1930’s.

Looking around the town, there are so many old buildings. For instance, what about the Picturedrome, which was built in 1886 as an Assembly Room before being converted into a cinema in 1919? What about Reynolds Depository built in 1911? There is also the Bognor Club in Sudley Road, which was originally built in 1837 as one of our town halls.

If we look at the area around the Royal Norfolk Hotel, we have a number of residences that date from the 1700s, now slightly hidden away from the main road, but well maintained and retaining some of their original features.

In the High Street, we have Valhalla and Manora, one of the earliest constructions in the town and, also, East View further along on the other side of the road towards Butlin’s.

Towards the town centre, in the High Street,

we have a range of original buildings. The William Hardwick, built in the 1820s as The New Inn, is still serving drinks to visitors today. Recently, we had the Kentucky Fried Chicken business, in an original building of York House, on to which a garden was built the Arcade in 1902.

In the centre of the town, behind Hotham Park, on Church Path there is The Laurels, once a school and recently updated into a property worthy of the 21st century, as are many of the old thatched cottages both in North Bersted and in Felpham.

Once, at a public meeting, which had been arranged to discuss the plans for a marina, a woman remarked that she had 'lived here all her life and didn’t want it to change until she died'.

Sadly, we have to move on, young people require change, and we have to look to the future. The Duke of Richmond said in 1960, 'Bognor Regis is forward looking.' He was opening Fitzleet and the Queensway, which is now not to everyone’s taste, but it was thought of in a very positive manner when it was first constructed.

In the 1980s a councillor remarked that 'we should stop carping on about old photographs'. I think I was actually – by implication - included in their comment.

We have to have a balance and see where we have come from to see where we are going.

As was experienced during the three Festivals of Local History, we do still have much heritage remaining in a town that was only commenced in 1787 - a mere 220 years ago.

I wonder, however, how we, today, and our actions will be judged in 50 years' time?

Injury-hit Blues limp into rest week PostSport as Brighton defeat Ashley's team CHICHESTER RFC will swap for the turf for the treatment table as the injury-hit Blues have a rest week to lick their wounds.

Scott Ashley's side lost further ground on the leaders at the top of London Division One South after falling to a 38-26 reverse to Sussex rivals Brighton.

Despite the Blue and Blues sitting third, four spots above their hosts it could - and perhaps should - have been more, with Chi missing 12 regulars. It meant back-to-back defeats for Ashley's team, meaning they are now 12 points behind top spot.

With no game this week, all energies will go into nursing some of those players back to full health ahead of the visit of undefeated league leaders Medway on November 25.

Club spokesman Roger Gould said: "Chi earned a bonus point for their four tries and were in sight of a possible draw before the home team scored in the last minutes.

"However, Brighton were faster in the backs and with excellent support play were able to create several overlaps on the wings."

Chi made a rare bad start, conceding a try after two minutes, with Brighton scoring a second moments later. But Ashley's side

slowly grew into the half, with scrum half diving over to reduce the arrears after a quick tap.

Seaman tied things up on the next attack, throwing a big dummy and then snaking past a tackle to score ten metres left of the upright.

Brighton bagged another try before the half-hour - but Chi tied it up again, Seaman scoring his hat-trick after a forwards drive to make it 17-17 at the break.

The next score was to prove important and it was the white shirts of Brighton that got it, rounding off an overlap despite the pass looking forward.

Any hope of Chi getting something out of the game evaporated shortly after when Seaman was sin-binned for stopping a Brighton attack.

Chi did get a consolation score via a penalty try but Brighton scored again as time ticked down. * Bognor RFC welcome Farnborough to Hampshire Avenue tomorrow (2pm) as they kick start their Vase campaign.

The Purple and Greens have been performing well in Hampshire One this season and should be firm favourites against a side from a division below them.

RUGBY: Chichester College’s Rugby Academy chalked up their seventh straight league victory with an easy victory over Itchen College.

Having beaten Itchen at the Central Venue event the previous week, the Chi squad was confident going into the match. The Academy was boosted by the return from injury of county loosehead Lewis Woolcombe, who has scored hat tricks in his past two games, and tighthead Alfred Montague. With their forwards dominating from the start, Chi dominated the match - turning a 12-10 half-time lead into an eventual 31-20 victory thanks to three second half tries.

420 sailing class drops in to Itchenor

THE BEST of British flocked to Chichester Harbour as future Olympians faced off in open water.

Fresh from training in Weymouth and Rutland, the International 420 class travelled to Itchenor Sailing Club for a coached open meeting.

The sailors were greeted with unseasonably warm weather, an empty Chichester Harbour and perfect 420 winds of between ten and 20 knots.

Although there was extremely close racing throughout the weekend, results on day one were dominated by Vita Heathcoate and Milly Boyle with four bullets out of five races, showing exceptional speed and boathandling on multiple, tight race courses.

Others threatened, but Eleanor Keers and Aaron Chadwick were the only team to break the perfect streak. Slightly more breeze on Sunday morning saw them open with two wins to briefly challenge for the overall event, before Vita and Milly got back on top form to

win the last three races and, ultimately, the Open meeting.

Eleanor and Aaron finished in second place, followed by Adele Young and Dan Burns in third.

It was a positive weekend of racing for all of those associated with Itchenor, which was celebrating its 90th anniversary after being founded in 1927.

Just a few days earlier, the club's prestigious Mends Cup for the most notable sailing performance of the 2017 season was awarded to Ben Saxton and John Tremlett.

Ben, with his crew Katie Dabson, claimed gold at the first ever foiling Nacra 17 World Championship at La Grande Motte, France, in September.

Meanwhile, John with his crew on Lass won the XOD Captain's Cup in Cowes Week for the fifth consecutive time.

This is an unprecedented feat in the 87-year history of the trophy.

Rutherford 'delighted' as Chi ease into third round of Vase

Pagham find form at last PAGHAM are eyeing up a magnificent seven unbeaten as the Lions look to have finally hit their stride.

Consistency dogged the team from Nyetimber Lane early on this campaign as the new management duo of Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds struggled to string results together.

But after being knocked out of the Peter Bentley Cup and FA Vase, the Lions have found their form, putting together a run of six games unbeaten.

The latest was a 6-1 hammering of Eastbourne United in front of a home crowd last weekend.

Those three points lifted Pagham to seventh in the SCFL Premier, within touch of the leading pack.

Tomorrow gives them another opportunity to put pressure on those teams above them as the Lions travel to Newhaven in the league.

The Dockers are a dangerous side, whose midtable position belies the fact they can beat any team in the division on their day.

Much of that is down to the form of their striker Lee Robinson, who is the league's top scorer with 18 goals so far.

Pagham have their own sharpshooter, though, in the form of Dan Simmonds, who has netted ten goals in just six games since his return to the club last month.

He continued his remarkable scoring form last weekend, bagging a hat-trick in the comfortable victory over Eastbourne United.

Simmonds took 12 minutes to open the scoring on Saturday, chipping home after being put free by Andy Chick.

After the visitors equalised, Callum Overton restored the Lions' lead before the break.

Simmonds added his second and Pagham's third just after the restart, taking advantage of a mistake by the opposition goalkeeper.

He then rounded off his hat-trick on the hour mark, seizing on a through ball from Lloyd Rowlatt before stroking home.

There was still time for Overton to add a second and substitute Scott Murfin to take the overall tally to six.

Had it not been for the saves of Eastbourne goalkeeper Phil Hawkins, this could have been Pagham's biggest win in many a year.

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford said he was 'delighted' with his team after his side secured their place in the third round of the FA Vase.

Goals from Scott Jones, Dan Hegarty and Josh Clack helped the Lillywhites to a 3-0 win over Southern Counties East Premier side Deal Town in the midweek match, which was re-arranged because of a waterlogged pitch.

The visitors from Kent, who lifted the Vase at Wembley in 2000, were no match for Chi. Rutherford's attentions now turn back to the SCFL Premier and the visit of AFC Uckfield to Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm).

After the Deal match, Rutherford said, “We're delighted with the result and the performance of every player - not just the 11 that started but from number one to 14 they've all done what was asked of them.

"It's rare that you get all your players doing that. And we're happy, of course, to be through to the next round of the competition."

The win has earned Rutherford's side a trip to Whitstable Town, who they beat in the Vase last season on their way to the last 32, on December 2.

Future looking bright for Sids Ne

SIDLESHAM boss Daren Pearce said he will keep on turning to youth as his side continue to creep up the SCFL Division Two table.

The Sids returned to winning ways last weekend beating Lancing United 2-0 away from home.

Those three points lifted Pearce's side up to fourth in the league, just six points behind leaders Roffey.

With a home match against strugglers Worthing Town to come tomorrow (2pm), that gap may narrow even more.

But it is the spirit and results achieved away

from the Recreation Ground which is pleasing Pearce the most.

He said: "Our pitch is one of the best in the league so we do have to adapt when we go away. Also, we still have got a very young side.

I think at times the average age, apart from the two full backs, has been 19 or 20 years old, which is really encouraging for us moving forward.

"The other week I had three 16-year-olds on the bench. It's all about getting that happy mix and helping the youngsters learn as that's where the future is."

Despite suffering just one defeat in the league this term, it is the Sids' failure to win games which is keeping them out of the promotion places.

But, despite drawing four from 11 matches, Pearce is confident his team remain on track to the ultimate goal of securing promotion at the end of the term.

The former Eastbourne Borough skipper said: "The youngsters, that's the future of the club so there's a real focus on bringing them through into the first team.

"I've had at least half a dozen or eight who have done that this season so we're going the right way."

Things are not looking so rosy along the harbour at Bosham where last season's division two champions are struggling to adapt to life under new manager Gary Lines.

The Robins were imperious last term, strolling to the finish line to be crowned champions.

But this time round, things have not been so easy - with Bosham sitting seventh with more than a third of the season gone.

Lines did have some joy last weekend when his team outclassed Alfold to beat them 4-2 in the first round of the division two cup.

Callum Coker, Callum Fewell, Grant Radmore and Jake Lafferty all scored in the win, which lifts spirits ahead of this weekend's clash with second-placed Jarvis Brook at Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

Chi's Wright upbeat despite Eagles loss CHICHESTER City Ladies manager Matt Wright believes his side remain 'very positive' despite not winning in three matches.

The Green and White Army have performed well in their first season at the FA Women's Premier League South level.

But the past few weeks have seen the injuryhit Chi squad come up short, first by losing out in the league cup then picking up only one point from six on two visits to the capital.

The latter of those two matches was last weekend, which saw Wright's team defeated 4-1 against a strong Crystal Palace team.

The manager admitted his side were hopeful of getting back on track at home to Cardiff City on Sunday (2pm).

Wright said: "Cardiff are a good side and

we will not underestimate them but we are confident going into every game.

"It's nice to be back at home and we will try and play our style of football. We need to be more clinical and hopefully we will take something out of it."

Chi could be boosted with a number of key players returning from injury.

Goalkeeper Sadie Wilson-Blakely and Lauren Cheshire were back in the squad for the Palace trip while Lucie Challen is nearing full fitness.

But it was not enough to halt the Eagles who had striker Gemma Bryan (3) and Nikita Whinnett to thank for the points.

Rocks boss believes side can do no more to end winless run Next Game

ST ALBANS CITY (A) Tomorrow (3pm)

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce has warned his team it will not be easy to snap a 13-game winless streak in the league.

The Rocks slipped into the bottom two last weekend after suffering a 2-1 reverse to inform Hampton & Richmond.

With Bognor's last victory in all competitions coming back in September in the FA Cup, the Nyewood faithful have almost forgotten what it is like to celebrate a win.

Hopes are that will change in the coming days, as the Rocks travel to seventh-placed St Albans City tomorrow (3pm) to play a side who have not won in five.

Then, on Tuesday, it's back to the south coast to host FA Cup giantkillers Oxford City (7.45pm).

Speaking to the Post, Pearce warned that the search for three points would not be easy.

He said: "All I know is every day in this league is no easy game. It's a challenge of our ability.

You only have to look at the inconsistency of the results to see that is the case.

"Oxford City may be down the bottom with us but the last two away games they have beaten Chelmsford, who are up the top, and Colchester, who are in the Football League. If anyone thinks it will be an easy game, it won't.

All we can do as a management staff is to make sure the players are in as good as physical and mental condition as they can be."

Bognor's long search for a league win looked

set to end on Saturday against Hampton when Ibra Sekajja scored a well-taken goal.

But a mistake from young midfielder Tommy Block allowed the visitors to equalise before a Doug Tuck conceded a penalty late on to see the Rocks cruelly defeated.

Speaking after the match, Pearce described the match as a 'pleasing performance but a disappointing result', adding: "If it had been a draw neither side could complain, if we won they couldn't complain."

He added: "I've been doing this a long time and I've never known getting beat to do anyone good mentally. We have been very used to winning which becomes a good habit and now we are not winning.

"In some cases that will make individuals stronger and others will look for excuses.

Hopefully, we will all come out of this stronger."

The Rocks have been boosted in recent weeks with the return of skipper Sami El-Abd and Doug Tuck from injury. But Pearce says the search for two more additions continues.

He said: "I think at the moment, given everything that's going on, we're getting maximum out of the players that we have available. But I think in order to be winning regularly at this level I believe we need to sign one or two. I do know there's no-one living within 20 miles of Bognor who is available who would improve us at this time."

FA chief impressed by Bognor HE MAY be one of the most powerful men in English football. But it seems that Bognor Regis has made a real impression on FA chairman Greg Clarke.

The chairman of the English Football Association took advantage of the international break to take in last weekend's match at Nyewood Lane between the Rocks and Hampton & Richmond.

Despite sitting on the FA executive with Clarke, Pearce said it was as much a surprise to him as it was everyone else at the club that the embattled FA chief - who is under-pressure for the way he handled the Eni Aluko case -opted to take in a game on the south coast.

Pearce said: "I didn't arrange it, I think he just picked out a match he wanted to watch.

"He goes around the country a lot watching matches at all levels. I know Greg lives in south London so he probably thought it would be a decent game to watch.

"The first I knew was that his secretary called asking for a ticket to be put on the door.

"Speaking to him afterwards, he thoroughly enjoyed his day. He told me he thought it was a good advert for that level of the game, and he said the pitch, the crowd, the match were all excellent."

IT'S BEEN another frustrating few weeks for me as well as the club.

I'm still out with a shoulder injury. I had an MRI scan on it earlier this week and I'm just waiting to hear from the doc if I need surgery.

It actually feels much better than it has felt for a while, which I suppose is good news.

A few people have asked me what is wrong. Basically, the issue is with a joint that holds the shoulder in place. They think that, when I dislocated the shoulder, the labrum, which holds everything together, was damaged.

They want to put something in there to allow the joint to stay in place and give it more strength.

That's why I went for an MRI scan, although it's not something I relished.

I don't like being in an enclosed space but needs must I suppose if it will help sort out my injury.

Back to the pitch, and the fortnight kicked off with defeat at Braintree.

It's never pleasant to go down within a few seconds.

We had a heated discussion between us as to whether we controlled the game or not after that point.

Some of the lads said that we did, as we had a lot of possession, but the final product wasn't good enough.

The other argument, which is where I stand, was that you can control the ball as much as you want but, if you don't have a shot, then you can't say you're in control.

Defensively, they were very sound, and yes, they sat back, but we didn't create anything.

If it had been 0-0 longer then I think we would have had a shot as the game would have opened up and that would have suited us.

For Hampton, we were much better. I think we needed a home game as it has been a while since we played in front of our home fans.

The big difference, though,

was having Sami back as he is a leader and a bit of a mouth.

We've been lacking that sort of character. He will be the first to admit that he didn't play well on the ball but he marshalled the back four.

It was a shame though that Doug had that lazy leg in the box to give away a penalty, he knows that you can't do at this level. But having said, that we had three chances we should have put away.

Despite a better performance, and looking hard to beat, the result will stay 2-1.

I'm getting fed up with us saying that we played well and didn't win.

It feels like after every match we have the same conversations but there's only so long that you can keep on thinking the results will come.

I feel like we are talking a lot about performance but need to start grinding out results.

We're second bottom and need to start picking up points.

Soon, the pitches are going to cut up and start getting boggier which doesn’t suit us. That makes the next few matches important.

St Albans away tomorrow is another game where no-one expects us to get anything.

But then we have three games in quick succession against sides who are in the bottom half.

I think those games will go a long way to defining our season. If we get six or seven points out of nine then I think we will be fine. If we get nine, then we can move forward.

But one or two - then we will be in a relegation battle.

I'm looking at them and thinking by hook or by crook we will not lose.

Yes, performance is important; but we need points and I don't care how we play in order to get them.

The fans are getting agitated and nervous, but they keep turning up and supporting us. It's us players who need to start performing better.
