£1,000 is based on the existing coverage for the outdated designated public places order from about five years ago before the new estate of some 700 homes was built.

THis means the police will have fewer powers in the heavily populated area with its sports and community facilities.

Bersted Parish Council's deputy chairman, Cllr David Lainchbury, lives in one of the new homes in North Bersted.

He said: "I am horrified that something of this importance seems to lack the necessary attention to detail.

"If this sort of information is going to be brought into the public domain, then up to date maps should be used at least."

THe new order is set to take effect next April if it is confirmed by Arun District Council's full council next month. Its adoption will follow a lengthy public consultation last summer which

produced overwhelming support. Arun's cabinet backed the move on Monday. A total of 257 people agreed with the police being able to disperse those causing anti-social behaviour within the alcohol control area or likely to cause it. Just nine were against and 14 were unsure.

For the power to confiscate alcohol for the same reasons, 250 people agreed and only 14 disagreed and 15 were unsure.

Youth awards will celebrate best in area OUTSTANDING young people around Bognor Regis are being sought for recognition.

THe revived Rotary Arun Youth Community Awards are being staged next March - and the search is on for those aged between 11 and 19 years who deserve to have their actions appreciated by the community.

Bob Pavard, who chairs Bognor Regis Rotary Club's youth service committee, pictured above right with Ken Poupart, said: "We know that there are young people in Arun who do some fantastic things. We would like those who know about them to nominate them for one of the awards.

"We feel that these incredible young people need to have some recognition and to have some appreciation for what they are doing.

"It could be young carers, or raising money for charity, doing errands for elderly neighbours or some gardening.

THese are things that are taken for granted but it's important that some mention is made of them.

"THere is also a valuable prize for a group of young people who have collaborated in doing something meeting these objectives."

THe youth awards were a regular

part of the Arun community calendar when they were staged by Arun District Council's former leisure operator, Inspire Leisure. But it pulled out to save money and the awards were scrapped for a couple of years.

THe four Rotary clubs on Bognor Regis, Arundel and Littlehampton combined to fill that gap in 2013 and began work to re-start the awards.

THis year's event saw 14 young people and three groups nominated by Bob Pavard and his colleague Ken Poupart believe many were missed because a lot of people were unaware of the awards.

Nominations for the 2017 awards should be made by January 31, 2017.

THe next ceremony, the clubs' third, will take place at the Windmill THeatre in Littlehampton next March 22.

THe organisers are calling upon all schools, youth groups, social services, parents and leaders in the community to nominate a young person whose actions fit one of the categories.

Steep rise in council tax will cost Aldwick's residents more RESIDENTS of Aldwick are facing a hefty 15 per cent increase in part of their council tax bill.

Aldwick Parish Council agreed to impose the inflation-busting rise at its meeting on Monday.

THe decision was made without a debate after it was outlined by the chairman of the council's finance committee, Cllr Alan Smith.

THis means the council's precept on the total bill for next year will be raised by £11,659 - or about 14.9 per cent (£2.20) for a band D household.

Cllr Smith said the parish council had kept council tax low in the past. He said:

“We are having to raise it to cover costs as over the last five years we froze it.

Instead, we were running on reserves.

But these reserves won’t last forever, hence why we have to raise it now.

“However, we have only raised it the minimum amount and Aldwick still has one of the lowest council tax rates in the Arun district," he said.

He pledged the parish council intended to keep its tax comparatively low in the future and to use the extra funding for important work.

Cllr Smith added: “Our five year plan is going to cost a lot, and this will help with that.”

Award honour for head Julie SCHOOL head Julie Holloway has been honoured as Aldwick's latest community champion.

Mrs Holloway was presented with her engraved glass award at Aldwick Parish Council's annual reception last Friday.

She has been in charge of Rose Green Infant School for seven years and said she was humbled to her work recognised.

"It was an overwhelming accolade because it was so unexpected," she said.

She will put the award in pride of place in the school's reception once the Christmas decorations have been removed.

"I enjoy working with the children and seeing them grow and become independent. THeir zest for learning never ceases to amaze me.

"THe infant school is a very happy place where everything is done for the benefit of

the children," she said.

"I've got an excellent team behind me as well who want to get children learning."

THe school in Hawkins Close has reverted to its usual size of 270 pupils aged 4-7 after three years of expanding temporarily to 300 children.

Aldwick Parish Council chairman Cllr Lillian Richardson said Mrs Holloway had been a popular choice.

"It's very important to us in the community to know that parents are secure in the knowledge their children are having a safe and fruitful start to their journey in education.

"THrough Julie's leadership, the school is achieving this.

"We have never heard a bad word about her and everyone is united in their praise of the school," she said.

Shoppers are urged to stay safe DRIVERS were warned about gambling with their lives at Christmas by Bognor Regis firefighters.

THe fire crews used a unique pack of cards to test the knowledge of motorists doing their festive shopping.

Devised by Demi Rishman, of the community department at the town's fire station, each of the 20 cards contained a fact about an alcoholic drink or a prescription drug.

Examples included the fact one bottle of WKD contained one unit of alcohol and a can of Foster's lager equalled 2.5 units. But medicines like oxazepam and clonazepam were also featured as well as illegal drugs such as cocaine.

Watch manager Sean Embleton said the shoppers were asked to pick a card to find out more about staying safe behind the steering wheel.

"It's a fun way of getting them to know important information," he said.

"Younger people, especially, can be surprised to know how many units are in a can of Foster's.

"And with medicines, people have obviously got to keep taking them, but it is important they don't take an extra tablet if they are feeling bad. THat could take them over the limit for drug driving."

More than 100 shoppers spoke to the fire crew during their four hours in Tesco in Shripney Road last Friday.

One of them, Bognor Regis motherof-three Mel Hopwood, 36, said she was surprised to find out how the affect of booze could linger in her body. "I didn't know the time it took for alcohol to clear. THat has changed my idea about drinking and driving," she said.

THere was also the chance for shoppers to try to measure out a unit of alcohol to give them an idea of how much they are drinking at home as well as wear the beer goggles which replicate the effect of getting drunk on a person's vision and reactions on a driving simulator.

Mr Embleton said the session, based around an information bus, had been invaluable as part of the service's Under THe Influence campaign.

"Most people think they have an idea of what they are pouring but they are usually wrong," he said.

"We just want to keep people safe. Noone in the emergency services wants to be called out to a road traffic accident. It's a terrible feeling when you arrive at the wreckage of a fatal collision, especially if a younger person is involved.

"You imagine their parents sitting at home reading a paper or having a cup of tea and their lives are going to be changed forever after they've had the knock on the door that everyone dreads.

"You think about what has happened, why it has happened and how it has happened. We've had quite a few fatalities here in recent years. My watch has been called out to two of them.

"It has a knock-on effect and you get to see some dreadful images. We have trauma aftercare when we can talk about what has happened but you can't lose those images. You can't talk about them with your family, either - and it's the same for all the emergency services."

` Dash-cam appeal DRIVERS in Aldwick with dashcams have been asked to contact the police with footage which could help them solve a burglary.

Detectives need information about the daylight break-in at a house in Cypress Way. It happened between 8.30am1pm on Wednesday, December 7.

Entry was forced and a quantity of cash and some key, and a silver ring from a bedroom, were taken.

Investigator Tom Carpenter, of the West Sussex Priority Crime Team, said: "THis burglary happened just off of a busy road during daylight hours.

"I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and saw any suspicious people or vehicles.

"I would also be interested to hear from the owners of any vehicles fitted with dash-cams that may have been in busy Barrack Lane between these times."

Planning officer Richard Temple has ruled the scheme in Greencourt Drive would be an overdevelopment and out of keeping with the area.

A total of 12 letters of objection to the plan by Matt Lush were sent.

Centre boost from funding Experts in visit to Blakes Cottage INSPECTORS from Historic England were due to visit Blakes Cottage in Felpham yesterday.

THe building heritage experts decided to take a look at the Grade IIlisted structure after complaints about its condition.

Campaigners state the building is in a state of disrepair, the thatched roof needs replacing and urgent work is required to prop up and secure rafters.

THe thatched house was bought last year by the Blake Cottage Trust for £495,000 from the family who had owned it for almost a century.

As reported, a bitter dispute has been raging about the state of repair and the future of the building where poet and visionary William Blake wrote the words which became Jerusalem.

Aldwick author Beryl Kingston has been vocal in her criticism of the plans by the trust. THey include the intention

to build a visitor centre in its grounds.

Her latest comments are on page 29.

THe controversy was also covered in The Times on Tuesday.

Blake lived at the cottage in Blakes Road from 1800-1803.

Mrs Kingston is reported as saying: "Blake was one of our foremost poets and we owe it to him to keep his cottage standing. We now know the Blake Cottage Trust has no money to repair the cottage."

Tim Heath, the chairman of the trust and of the Blake Society, is quoted as looking into potential sources of income for the cottage.

"People who follow visionary paths need support. THe cottage gives them a place of refuge where we give back to those special people.

"It is a place where people can go for a few days' respite, where they can pursue their vision," he said.

FURTHER funding has been agreed to support a popular day centre in Bognor Regis for another year.

Some of the cash boost of £173,773 from Arun District Council will go to ensure the Laburnum Centre continues to provide its range of services for the over-50s. THe funding, if it is finally approved by councillors next month, will take the council's backing of the centre in Lyon Street beyond its current deadline of next March 31 to March 31, 2018.

THe centre and its services from a gym to a cafe and numerous workshops are provided by Age UK West Sussex.

Arun's cabinet agreed on Monday to recommend the deal should go ahead in line with a report by their leisure and voluntary sector manager, Robin Wickham.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, the cabinet member for community services, said: "I am very much grateful for all the work that not only Robin and his team have done but also Age UK. "I look forward to the activities for older people continuing in a good way."

Cabinet member for environmental services Cllr Terence Chapman paid tribute to the work of Age UK. "THey have put in very effective efforts to reduce social isolation and improving well-being and health and giving people a better sense of community, which they lack sometimes.

"It has been really tremendous and I fully support this recommendation and

Cllr Gillian Brown, Arun's leader, said: "THere has been some amazing partnership work done with Age UK for some years."

THe Laburnum Centre was opened in 1990 and initially operated by the council. Responsibility for its range of affordable services and activities for older people was transferred to Age UK in 2006 for ten years.

Mr Wickham said the charity had used its knowledge and experience to provide social support to enable individuals to have resilience, improved quality of life and good social networks.

Since the transfer, Age UK's funding from Arun has been gradually reduced from nearly £270,000 a year to its current amount. But he said West Sussex County Council was drawing together all the services which influenced the health and wellbeing of older people and which it is legally required to fund.

It is reviewing its funding for those services, which will include the Laburnum Centre, ready to commission a new tender. THis has been put back to take effect from April 1, 2018, and Arun's support will provide continuity until then.

"Age UK has worked with Arun to maintain a valuable service to the community despite the uncertainty of tendering for a new contract," said Mr Wickham. THe charity also provides services in Arun's eastern area.

From page one Nigel Croad, the deputy leader of Arun, said: "If we do not move the current designated public places order into the public space protection order it will be lost.

It is important to maintain that alcohol control area In addition, we are recommending the option for dispersal powers in the greater Bognor Regis and Littlehampton areas which would give the police, or any other authorised officer, the powers to disperse people who are, or who are likely, to commit antisocial behaviour."

THe need for the new order was shown by the responses to Arun's consultation. THese revealed 207 people believed street drinking was a problem in the Bognor Regis area, 70 were unsure and ten did not believe the problem existed.

THose who had seen anti-social behaviour caused by street drinking came to 175, while 88 had not seen it and ten didn't want to comment.

Five or more instances in the past year had been seen by 86 people, 3-5 occasions by 39 and 1-2 instances by 52.

Noise was the most common form of the behaviour which alarmed people. It had been heard by 146 of them, 133 had been verbally abused, 123 had been intimidated and there had been 41 other instances.

Cllr Trevor Bence, Arun's cabinet member for housing, said: "I'm grateful the police will at least have the power to do something. If we don't have this power in place, nobody can do anything as limited as the response might be given the pressure of work."

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE 17 th December 2016 11 am

Extra sleigh stop added PUBLIC demand has seen an extra stop added to Father Christmas's annual sleigh ride around Bognor Regis.

THis Sunday will see him visit the new Bersted Park housing area off Chichester Road from 4.30pm-7.30pm after the success of his first tour of the housing last year.

Santa Claus has agreed to the request with the help of his friends at Bognor Hotham Rotary Club as he continues to bring fun and joy to households around the town on his illuminated sleigh.

Brian Clarke, the club's press officer, said: "THe Christmas float operated by the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham is hugely successful and on each tour Father Christmas is welcomed by large crowds of children and parents.

"We thank the people of Bognor Regis for their kind generosity which helps to make the standard of living so much better for those in

need in the local area."

THe late addition to the schedule of Father Christmas comes as he prepares to ride his sleigh for his last full week of visits complete with music and free sweets for the children in the roads he goes round.

Tonight sees him visit Blakes Mead in Felpham (5.45-8pm) and he will be collecting at the M&S Store in Shripney Road next Monday daytime.

Next Wednesday, THursday and Friday will take them to the Tesco store in Shripney Road during the days.

THeir last stop will be Jordans Butchers in Rose Green from 9am-1pm on Christmas Eve. Money collected from the float will be used by the Rotarians to give to good causes in the area.

THe tour began on December 4 and has taken in the Downview Road area of Felpham, Rose Green in Aldwick, Aldwick East, Flansham Park and Collyer Avenue in Bognor Regis.

BRAVE ladies of Therapaws, Wendy Cooper and Megan Kemp, are valiantly taking part in a wintery ice bucket challenge this weekend in aid of charity.

This Saturday at 11am will see the plucky pair doused in buckets of freezing cold ice and water in order to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Throughout the year Therapaws have made it their mission to gather as may funds as possible for various charities including Cancer Research for which they have raised £1,200 so far this year!

Founder Julie Grantham spoke of how important the work of Cancer Research is, especially in relation to everyone at Therapies.

She said: “We have several ladies here going through chemotherapy at the moment.

Therefore we felt it was an extremely important cause to donate to.”

During the Saturday morning agility

class the ice bucket challenge will take place, and those interested will be able to view what happens via their Facebook page afterwards.

Based in Sidlesham, Therapaws runs a therapeutic and leisure swimming pool especially for dogs. Initially set up to help dogs with injuries, or post-operation problems, they now also offer classes for general fitness, agility and even just for fun!

Swimming has proved to be highly beneficial for the health and fitness of all the dogs that have visited Therapaws, something Julie is very proud of. She said: “We are able to offer help for post-op and unfit dogs. And now it’s great to see how they come to socialise and to have fun!”

The ice bucket challenge on Saturday is just another way in which Therapaws is working hard to help others, both canine and human.

Residents call for homes say GIVE us our say, residents at a Pagham campaign's first coffee morning demanded.

Dozens of supporters of the fight against thousands of potential new homes turned up to the social event held by PAGAM. Among them was Richard Burrows, 63, of Rose Green Road. He said: "Our town is changing around us and we have no real say in it. It's very frustrating.

"We have been affected by the small estate that was built on part of the Osborne Refrigeration site. Our privacy has been degraded and the value of our property has been degraded. Any household would value those things but none of those are official reasons to complain. THat's what local people find frustrating."

As reported, major housing developments are being drawn up by national developers on top quality farmland around Pagham and Rose Green. Sites under threat include those on Sefter Road and Rose Green Road.

But delivery driver Mr Burrows said: "I've been working in Chichester for the past two months and it's taken me nearly an hour from 8am to get there. We have lived in our house since the mid-80s and we used to be able to hold a conversation in our front garden.

"But we can't hear ourselves think any more because of the amount of traffic at all times of the day.

"For centuries, people followed the jobs.

But we are now building houses miles from any work. People are having long journeys - up to 55 miles each way - to get to work. Why has that changed?

"It's about time someone questioned the policies the government has that we need more housing. Perhaps we need fewer people instead.

"THis area has traditionally been a retirement area and we should be building homes for retired people and that's it."

Some 75 people went along to the coffee morning staged by Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement at St Ninian's United Reformed Church Hall last Saturday. Several display boards showed the group's aims and the potential large-scale housing sites being lined up by developers to help Arun District Council meet its government imposed housing target of 919 new properties a year.

Albert Homer, one of the movement's founders, said: "THe morning has gone very well. I didn't expect so many people to turn up.

"THey are very interested in what is going on. We were able to tell them and to raise some money as well." A total of £220.45 was donated on the day."

PAGAM will go into the new year watching for any movement towards the plans being formally advertised by Arun.

"Our supporters will let us know when that happens. It's a case of watching for that and then asking those who back us to write letters with their views to Arun to let them know this is not the right place to develop," he said.

He added future events by the campaign group were being decided at a meeting this week after the success of the coffee morning and two large public meetings in two months.

Train talks sought RAIL passengers have urged for a breakthrough in the dispute which crippled train services for Bognor Regis.

THis week saw ASLEF train drivers strike on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to escalate their overtime ban in the dispute with Southern Railway about the launch of doors operated by the drivers to add to the industrial action of their fellow union, the RMT. Trevor Tupper, the secretary of the West Sussex Rail Users Association, said its latest newsletter: "We continue to talk to Southern management about this. I have also written to all our MPs and discussed the strikes with the

secretary for transport.

"All take the line is that the disputes can only be resolved by the unions and that the RMT should ballot its members on the Southern efforts.

"We too have suggested this to Mick Cash of the RMT but our letters have been ignored. We will continue our efforts for our members and for all rail users in the county."

As reported, the RMT has been in an industrial dispute with Southern since last April. THe clash concerns the use of drivers to close the doors of trains, instead of conductors, in exceptional circumstances. But the union says the change will affect passengers' safety.

"THe inspector recommended that the appeal be allowed and planning permission granted subject to conditions but the secretary of state disagreed with the inspector's conclusions regarding policy matters, and policy matters only, and dismissed the appeal."

Mr Langmead had launched a legal claim to challenge Mr Javed's decision, said Mr Collins. THat appeal is proceeding.

Meanwhile, Arun had indicated it wanted a fresh look at the plans, he said.

"Arun's head of planning policy and strategic development arranged a meeting with a representative of the applicant and Paul Collins on November 15 and at the meeting confirmed that, due to a significant sea change in the relevant policy circumstances, and the council's likely response to same since (Mr Javid's) decision the applicant was invited to resubmit the application so the council might have another opportunity to grant the outline planning permission sought."

A RENEWED attempt is being made to build up to a hundred homes in Yapton.

Keith Langmead Ltd has re-applied to Arun District Council to develop 4.5ha of farmland to the south of Ford Lane and east of North End Road.

Mr Langmead has been asked to try for outline planning permission for a second time by the council after it rejected his original planning application.

THe U-turn has come as Arun searches for sites for enough houses to be built to meet its housing target of 919 homes a year.

THis follows the secretary of state for the environment's refusal of his original application three months ago.

Paul Collins, the planning agent for Mr Langmead, says in a statement Arun refused planning permission in October 2014. Its decision was over-ruled by a planning inspector only for the application to be called in by government minister Said Javed and rejected three months ago.

Wade course for fire crew

FIREFIGHTERS from Bognor Regis donned waders to carry out flood training.

THey joined colleagues from around West Sussex for the exercise to enable them to cope better with extreme conditions.

THe training took place in the River Adur in Shoreham in freezing conditions earlier this month.

But West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service watch manager instructor Mick Dunham said the firefighters were undeterred by the bitter cold.

"Despite the course being undeniably tough for our team, with temperatures regularly dipping below freezing, the conditions have provided an excellent environment for us to conduct this training and test our equipment.

"Severe weather, by its very nature, is unpredictable so for our crews to have the chance to train and use the specialised equipment in difficult conditions makes the course all that more effective," he said.

THe Bognor Regis fire crews on the course were joined by their colleagues from Crawley and Littlehampton.

THe course lasted for three days and took place when temperatures dipped to -5C. It enabled the firefighters to use specialist flood wading equipment, bought by the fire and rescue service, as part of its ongoing investment to increase capabilities to support communities during flooding and severe weather such as the conditions experienced in Felpham in June 2012.

PATIENTS in Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital benefit from some of the cleanest surroundings in the country.

THe hospital is one of 11 run by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust whose staff won a national hospital cleaning award.

THe success at the Health Business Awards recognised the efforts made by the trust in recent years to raise standards in cleanliness and reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections.

Peter Prentice, the trust's strategic director of estates and facilities, said: "THis is fantastic recognition for the hard work and commitment of our facilities staff to provide clean environments for both our patients and staff, and to improve the experience of care."

Road has two wards, with a total of 48 beds, a minor injuries unit, an imaging department, a hydrotherapy pool and numerous outpatient clinics.

THis year's patient led assessment of the care environment 'cleaning scores' achieved 98.93 per cent across the 11 community hospitals inspected.

It is the third consecutive year the cleaning scores have been above the national average.

A trust spokesman said: "Our cleaning and housekeeping department continues to consistently maintain high standards.

"THe team is recognised both internally and externally for their hard work and dedication towards cleaning."

THe trust employs more than 4,750 staff to provide care to 9,000-plus people daily.

Its other hospitals include Arundel.

Harry is on song during concert tour A YOUNG cancer survivor from Bognor Regis has gone from a hospital ward to the Royal Albert Hall.

Harry Lehane, 24, has teamed up with four fellow former patients for a fundraising music tour which included a performance at the famous London venue.

Harry was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2012 and was supported by the charity, CLIC Sargent.

Following his treatment, he took part in the charity's Music Programme.

THis brings young people affected with cancer together with a professional musician to work on their songwriting and performing skills.

Harry joined four other young people who had been treated for cancer to tour through seven concerts as the CLIC Sargent Christmas Celebration.

THeir hectic schedule ensured a constant round of travelling, rehearsing and performing between December 4 and 10.

He praised the work of the Music Programme: "I went along and could meet different musicians who had been through something similar and work on music together. It was brilliant.

"I was blown away when I found out about the tour. It's just amazing to perform in front of these crowds in places like the Royal Albert Hall."

Harry was in college training to be a teacher when he started to feel a pain in his groin. He put off going to see a doctor even as the pain worsened and he experienced swelling.

Several months passed before he went to see a doctor - and was told he had cancer. Further examinations showed the cancer had spread to leave him needing intensive chemotherapy.

"It was a really hard time. I was just about to go to university and was supposed to be in the prime of my life," he said.

"Everyone around me was enjoying their lives and going out and having fun and I couldn't do anything at all.

I could just go to the hospital or lie in bed.

"Music ended up being my way out.

I would listen to heavy music when I was feeling bad and that would help me keep together."

THe CLIC Sargent singers were fronted by jazz and opera singer Lydia Haynes. She feared she would never sing again after she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011 aged 16.

But she recovered and her career has gone from strength to strength. She performed at this year's BBC Proms.

Harry's co-singers were George Stephenson, Veronica Stanwell and Jacob Cracknell.

THey performed in Gateshead, Exeter, Manchester and Norwich as well as the Royal Albert Hall.

Phil Day, CLIC Sargent's music coordinator, said: "It was wonderful to see these talented young musicians performing together. THey are a great group and it's brilliant to see the bonds they've formed during and since the workshop."

More days of darkness for residents

FAULTY streetlights are set to leave North Bersted residents in the dark for the rest of this winter.

THe four lampposts on Crimsham Road have been out of action since the housing was built by Persimmon Homes South Coast. One is believed to even lack an an electric cable.

Next year will be the fifth anniversary of the owners' arrival in their new homes.

But their efforts to get the lights switched on have failed so far.

Ian Bull, 68, said: "I live in Elbridge Square and I come around the corner and it's like driving into a black hole. It's worse than that because there are a lot of dog walkers and a lot of cars parked on the square.

Alan Coombs, 49, of Crimsham Road, said: "THe road is in a shared space and so there are pedestrians on it as well as cars.

"We moved in during April 2012 and we accepted that there were no working streetlights then because there was still a lot of building work going on.

"You understand that there is a period of grace while the work is being finished but we never expected to still be without lights more than four-a-half years later."

Fellow resident Paul Wells said ensuring lights worked should be a condition of planning approval.

THe lack of action about the lights has left the roads on the Willows Edge estate unadopted by the county council because it is unwilling to take on the responsibility for their upkeep as a public road until it is satisfied the highways

meet its standard.

A spokesman for Persimmon Homes South Coast said: "THere has been an issue relating to the street lighting connections at Willows Edge, which has been escalated within the electricity company. We regret any inconvenience to local residents while this is being resolved.

"We have been working with West Sussex County Council to secure adoption of the estate roads for some considerable time and have been liaising with a number of regulatory parties to finalise matters which, we hope, will allow adoption to move forward next spring."

Bersted Parish Council chairman Cllr Brian Knight said at a recent meeting: "We have been in touch with the developer but they have given us the run around.

"If you look at the website for Willows Edge and Bersted Park, you will find there are 12 lights not working up there.

"It's appalling this has taken so much time and nothing has been done. We recently found out that four of the lights have no cable. If that is the case, they will never come on. THe developer has got to be made to get the road up to standard."

Ben Whiffin, the county council's area highways manager, said: "It's down to the developer to put the issues right ready for the adoption of the roads.

We will adopt them when they are up to standard because of the ongoing maintenance and responsibility. We are putting pressure on the developer."

` Hospice backing Danny in Strictly PEOPLE across West Sussex and beyond are being encouraged to show their support for Bognor Regis’s very own Danny Mac in the final of Strictly Come Dancing.

THe Hollyoaks actor grew up in the town and is a patron of St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Chichester where his mum, Jan Greene, works.

Last weekend he slipped into the bottom two but was saved by the judges and now he is preparing to go head-to-head with Louise Redknapp and Ore Oduba in the final tomorrow night.

Jan, who is the deputy ward sister on the in-patient unit of the hospice, said: “I just couldn’t bear to watch anymore. I have been in the audience every Saturday night but the announcement of the votes last Saturday just brought me to tears.”

In fact, the result brought many hospice staff to tears.

Staff nurse Sara Waters added: “After such an incredible performance of Saturday night, I was so upset to think that Danny could go out of the competition. He certainly deserves his place in the final with Ote Mabuse.”

Danny has been a hands-on Patron of St Wilfrid’s since 2012 and, over this time, he has played an active part in hospice events and calls in whenever he visits his family in Bognor Regis.

William Hill had Danny at 4/5 favourite to win ahead of Louise's 11/8 odds and 7/1 for Ore before tomorrow's final at 6.40pm on BBC1.

Voluntary group will have council funding cut back

FUNDING is to be cut for an organisation which helps charities around Bognor Regis and Chichester.

Arun District Council is due to agree to the reduction of £12,000 a year for Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester at its full council meeting next month.

A recommendation for the 20 per cent fall in support was made by the council's cabinet on Monday after a proposal by its overview select committee.

Cllr Terence Chapman, Arun's cabinet member for environmental services, said: "I fully support the recommendation.

Some years ago, when I was the chairman of this council, I went to VAAC's annual meeting.

"I asked them how they measured the effectiveness of the grant from Arun. I didn't receive a clear answer."

Backing the voluntary sector was important, he said, but the benefits of any grants had to be shown.

Arun's leader, Cllr Gillian Brown, said: "I couldn't agree more. Accountability is extremely important when we are talking about public money."

Outside the meeting, VAAC chief executive Tony Sneller said: "We can continue as we are at the moment by using our reserves. But we will not be able to do that in the long term.

"So this cut will have an impact in the future. We have already been through this situation recently with a cut in the county

council's support.

"We are limited in what we can do because we have to keep a certain level of reserves to comply with Charity Commission best practice."

Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester supports and develops the voluntary and community sectors in the two areas.

Its work is to ensure vibrant and sustainable community groups, community engagement and action, networking among voluntary groups and maximising their potential from its base in Bognor Regis Town Hall. Support is also provided for partnership work with wellbeing and health and homeless people.

It was formed in April 2012 after a merger of the two organisations which performed that function in both districts.

THe district council has given it £60,950 a year in the past two years. But this will fall to £48,760 yearly from next April for two years if the cut is ratified by councillors.

Arun's leisure and voluntary sector manager, Robin Wickham, said: "VAAC is looking to new sources of funding and more project work. THe much-valued connecting communities team was disbanded last year when partnership funding was reduced or withdrawn."

Council deputy leader Cllr Dudley Wensley told the cabinet: "We should not lose sight of the fact that £48,000 is still a considerable sum of money."

Benefits report sent to MPs

Citizens Advice has compiled a dossier which sets out the impact wrong Personal Independence Payment assessments are having on its clients.

THe report has been sent to MPs with constituents in the coastal area the charity covers from its Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton centres with the call for action to sort out the problems.

Carol Groves, pictured right, the chief executive of Citizens Advice Arun and Chichester, said: "We have reviewed in detail the journey of all the clients who have sought advice over the last year and have concluded that the Department for Work and Pensions need to take action to ensure that they come to the 'right decision, first time'."

PIP is the number one benefit problem clients bring to the help centre. THe latest annual meeting of Citizens Advice Arun and Chichester was told more than 1,100 clients had sought help about PIP in its last full year. Around West Sussex, there are 7,500 claimants of the benefit.

THere are many recipients who do not receive the correct benefit award first time, a spokesman for the centre said.

"THis can lead to needless emotional stress, anxiety and debt. In some instances, losing the mobility benefit could lead to claimants being housebound as the result of a wrong decision by the department.

"THe appeals process can take up to a year with the subsequent impact on the family and 65 per cent of all appeals result in a different award."

THe report was published last week in a joint venture with Citizens Advice Central and South Sussex.

It covers the period from July 2015 to June 2016 and shows many claimants not getting the correct award first time, appeals taking up a year with needless stress, anxiety and debt, unsuitable assessment centres for disabled clients, medical advice being ignored or failing to arrive and a failure to address fluctuating conditions.

It states: "THe manner in which the current Personal Independence Payment benefit is implemented has a number of serious and tangible impacts on disabled people and their families.

"A process where over 65 per cent of all appeals heard by HM Courts and Tribunal Service about PIP result in a different award cannot be working correctly.

"Your constituents suffer financially and emotionally from added stress when benefits, such as Disabled Living Allowance, are removed as a result of wrong decisions being taken through the medical assessment process or by the decision maker.

"Back-dating the award can never recognise the stress suffered by the claimant who has had their mobility car taken away and been housebound for 11 weeks while the appeal process took place and a new car was ordered following a successful appeal. Backdating the award will never recognise the debt and the emotion surrounding additional hardship both financial and

wellbeing that your constituent suffers from wrong decisions."

Change had to be made, the report says, because it is the government's aim all Disability Living Allowance claimants under 65 in April 2013 and those over

16 will be re-assessed between next October and the end of 2018.

"THe impact over the next year will be very significant. It is time for change in the processes to ensure all PIP awards are right first time," the report adds.

` Police presence A 34-year-old Bognor Regis man was arrested and taken to custody after a large police operation in the town centre.

THe man was arrested on suspicion of failing to comply with the terms of his prison release licence.

THe incident began about 12.15pm on Monday afternoon.

Officers on routine patrol spotted a man who matched the description of someone they were keen to speak to in relation about a recall to prison.

THe man ran away and climbed on to a rooftop in Bedford Street. He remained there until negotiations with the police saw him come down at 4.35pm.

` Macular meeting ANYONE who suffers from a loss of central vision is invited to the next meeting of the Chichester Macular Support Group.

THis will be held from 1.30pm3.30pm on January 11 in the lounge of Pilgrim Court in Tozer Way. THe guest speaker will be Mandy Williams of ECLO. Future meetings will take place on the first Wednesday monthly at the same venue. THe speakers will include Citizen's Advice, Guide Dogs for the Blind and Chichester Lions.

THe group is part of the Macular Society and a smaller group meets quarterly in Bognor Regis with the help of 4Sight in Victoria Drive. Its next meeting is on January 19.

Christmas wonders bring season to life

f Plenty of seasonal fun in the woodland

by Kevin Smith kevin.smith@sussexpost.co.uk 01243 908506 ext 11 SANTA and his elves created three magical days in a winter wonderland at Aldingbourne Country Centre.

Excited children and their parents went along in large numbers to get in the mood for Christmas.

Falling snow was an added attraction at the popular annual event to get everyone in the mood for the season of goodwill.

THe youngsters eagerly visited Father Christmas in his grotto to tell him what they wanted on December 25.

His elves - some of them suffering from over indulging with the mince pies - checked their naughty and nice lists to see which children deserved presents.

In spite of many worried looks among the young visitors, all of them happened to be on the good list and left clutching their presents.

Local grandmother Karen Williams praised the event and appreciated the effort which had gone into making it so special.

She said: "It was the best Father Christmas I have ever been to. My grandchildren loved the afternoon and the snow machine was brilliant.

"We will definitely be back next year.

THe kids didn't want to leave the woods they were having so much fun."

f Young visitors enjoy the event Visitors to the country centre north of the A27 near Fontwell were kept entertained by the snow falling in the woodland and covering the Christmas trees.

Some of the younger children danced in the snow to add to the magic of the event. A Christmas market with stallholders from the area added extra interest for all ages.

Face painting was another attraction with seasonal designs to the fore and the Bognor Regis Concert Band played Christmas tunes for extra atmosphere.

Event organiser Abigail Rowe, of the Aldingbourne Trust, which runs the centre, said: "We have had a magical three days with Santa and his elves.

"It has been wonderful to see the

children so excited.

"It is a pure delight to see their faces light up with amazement when Santa and the elves talk to them about something only the child and parent knows - Santa knows everything!

"It was a sold out event. We would like to thank everyone who has booked and has, therefore, helped the charity."

THe Aldingbourne Trust is a charity that supports adults with learning disabilities across West Sussex.

It would like to thank Henry Adams Estate Agents for sponsoring the event and for making the magic possible in the woodland.

Brick Kiln Garden Centre provided the |Christmas trees to add an essential touch to the occasion.

Peter Pan-to delight for college show

A SELL-OUT audience was delighted by Felpham Community College's story of the boy who never grew up.

THe college's latest pantomine told the traditional tale of Peter Pan with a modern day twist.

A cast of 40 students from Years 7-9, and some sixth formers, successfully brought the story to life last Wednesday.

Nicole Matthews, the college's curriculum leader for music, said: "All students have worked really hard.

"THe pantomime is an extra-curricular activity. So, students have been working after school and at weekends to get everything ready and perfect their performance.

"Everyone has put in 100 per cent effort and all their hard work has paid off as it was a lovely evening. Well done to the cast and crew."

THe show was the latest in the annual key stage 3 pantos held at the college.

Among the performers was Year 7 student Oliver Timmins.

Oliver is shown bottom right in the photograph of the Lost Boys.

He said: "I played one of the Lost Boys

and the whole experience was great.

"I want to be an actor when I was older and this was the first big performance I have been involved with.

"It was fun working with all the other students. I was really worried on the night and excited - and my mum, dad and sister all came to watch.

"THe show went really well and everyone enjoyed it. I was so happy afterwards."

POLICE are growing increasingly concerned for a 58-year-old man from Bognor Regis.

Anthony O'Neill left his home at 9.15am on Monday to go fishing with his equipment. Anthony, also known as Tony, is white, about 5ft 10ins, of slim build with thick shoulder-length brown hair.

He has tattoos on both arms and wore a dark green/brown waxed jacket and blue over-trousers over blue jeans when he was last seen.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "He is a keen fisherman and often visits the seafront between Bognor Pier and Aldwick." Call 101 with any information.

Pupils told to be bullying aware CYBER bullying was explored

by Felpham Community College students.

THey were shown how comments made online could be as harmful as those expressed in person.

THe Year 8 pupils were also encouraged to recognise they had the power to seek help to tackle bullying.

THe workshop was led by the Duck Duck Goose Verbatim THeatre Tour 2016 for the national Anti-Bullying Alliance.

Yasmin Tetra, a drama teacher at the college, said: "People often find it easy to make hurtful and unpleasant comments on social media.

"It doesn't seem as real as doing it

face to face. THis hopefully set out clear boundaries for students on what constitutes bullying and what students should do if they are hurt or upset."

Year 8 student Eadie Swanton said: "Actions, names and comments which we thought was just friends being mean to each other is actually bullying.

We are not being silly by being upset about things that happen."

Classmate Daniella Cropanese said: "Comments we make as a joke might not come across in that way.

"We all use Facebook and Instagram and comments on these can be bullying. It's just doesn't have to be when you see people face to face."

SURPRISED Aldwick residents Tessa and Leigh Neighbour spotted a North American visitor in their back garden.

THey could see what looked like a striped pint-sized squirrel happily running making itself at home.

THe bemused couple took some photographs and were able to discover, with the help of the nearby pet shop on Aldwick Road, their unexpected visitor was a chipmunk.

Mrs Neighbour said: "We saw it in the late morning last THursday. Our first thoughts were that it was a chipmunk but I thought they were bigger.

"THis is not much bigger than a rat. But it was quite happy running around our garden."

THey took some photographs and found out from the pet shop about the rumoured escape of a chipmunk from a house in the area.

THey left their contact details in case the animal's owner did come forward.

But Mrs Neighbour said: "He seems quite at home going between our garden and our neighbour's eating the peanuts we put out for the birds.

"He seems completely happy but we had never seen anything like it.

"You certainly don't expect to see a chipmunk in your back garden in Aldwick Road."

THere are 25 species of chipmunk. All of them, except the Siberian chipmunk, live in North America. THey grow up to 11ins long and spend most of the day foraging.

Stonepillow operates Hostels and Hubs in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, together with a Recovery Service and Supported Accommodation. They are looking for dedicated volunteers to prepare and cook a two course meal for up to 10 people at the Chichester Hostel. The meal will comprise of a main course and dessert using donated ingredients where possible.

They are looking for people who have basic cooking abilities, good communication skills, a non-judgemental attitude and who are reliable.

Snak Shak Helper – The Phoenix Snak Shak Ltd The Phoenix Snak Shak was set up for the benefit of the young people in the Manhood peninsula area; especially, but not exclusively, in contact with existing youth provisions so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved. It is not a youth club with organised activities, but somewhere more casual for young people to meet with their friends.

THERE are always Santa's grottos aplenty around this time of year, but how many of them can you travel to via canal boat?

THat's exactly what Chichester Canal is offering this month up until December 22.

Enjoy a magical trip along the canal to visit Father Christmas in his grotto. THere will be presents from Santa himself for the wellbehaved children, and festive refreshments for all those on board.

Launching from the Chichester Canal Basin the trip last around 1 hour 15 minutes.

For these trips the boats, Richmond and Kingfisher are used, and Father Christmas will be making an appearance on both of

Considered a trip of great beauty, travelling along the canal is also a fantastic way to spot any local wildlife.

See if you can find any of the waterfowl that live on the canal, such as moorhens, coots, mallards and swans. If you're lucky you might also see herons, kingfishers, whitethroats or even greater spotted woodpeckers.

THere are also other creatures who reside in the surrounding areas such as a family of foxes , terrapins and water voles - but you will have to pay special attention to spy them!

Think pink, so says Jan! Visit the Royal Oak, aka the Pink Pub, in the heart of North Bersted JAN Cattermole doesn’t mind admitting that she has both feet firmly in the past when it comes to being the landlady of the Royal Oak – better known as the Pink Pub. For Jan takes great pride in being at the helm of what she describes as “one of the last remaining traditional pubs” in our area.

THat said, Jan and her friendly staff are very much immersed in the modern era when it comes to plaudits.

THey have just been awarded a certificate of merit from the wise folk at Tripadvisor for the second year on the bounce so they are obviously doing something right.

Tripadvisor is the biggest travel website in the world with more than 200 million unbiased reviews, so the merit is certainly one worth having.

Jan says: "It was lovely to receive the recognition last time of asking and to get it for the second year is certainly something of which we are very proud. And I think we have every right to be.

"What makes it such a significant award is that it is totally independent and there is no gloss on any of the reviews.

"In my book that makes it worth having and, by the same token, I recognise the authenticity of the reviews on Tripadvisor, too. THey have independent integrity and

there is no puff, no flim-flam, it is all about the experience the customers had, be that an enjoyable experience or otherwise."

THe rave reviews are thoroughly deserved, of course, but quite what aspect of the pub’s service is its best attribute is a matter of opinion.

THe Pink Pub is very well known for helping various charity efforts, chief among these is the Pink Pub to Paris charity bike ride last year – which saw madcap Bognor cyclists dressed as superheroes pedal to Paris on a £25 bike – that raised a staggering figure.

After the dust had settled, the saddlesoreness worn off and the adding up had been done, the huge effort had raised more than £100,000.

Jan admits: “It was a tremendous effort from everyone involved, especially the chaps who did all the cycling, and we were proud to play our part.

"We are known as a charity pub and we do our best to help out where we can. We support Snowdrop, St Wilfrid’s and Chestnut Tree House.

“After the Paris trip we have become known more and more as the charity pub. We do have a sense of community and try to look after our customers.”

Jan adds: “We are serve food from 12 until 6 Monday to Saturday, and then on a Sunday we serve roast dinners 12 to 2.30 and all of the dishes seem to prove popular.”

Choose from starters including homemade soup of the day, sautéed garlic mushrooms, prawn cocktail, paté with toast, or garlic bread.

A wide selection of jacket potatoes and baguettes with various tasty fillings is also available.

When it comes to main meals, the Pink Pub has a mouth-watering choice. If you can get past the all-day breakfast option, that is.

You can choose from grilled sirloin steak, piri piri chicken breast, grilled salmon fillet, pan fried lamb’s liver, breaded plaice or battered cod.

THen there is breaded wholetail scampi, lasagne, a three-egg omelette or steak and kidney pudding. It makes you hungry just

reading the list, doesn't it? All of these mouth-watering meals can be served along with vegetables, salad, chips, potatoes and mushrooms.

THere is also a board which details the day’s hugely anticipated specials from which you can select your option.

Yes, you certainly are spoiled for choice when it comes to eating here.

Set foot in the Pink Pub and you’ll know exactly what Jan means by “traditional” and the pub retains two bars, a throwback to when all pubs had a public bar and a saloon bar and a welcome one at that.

Jan admits that running the Pink Pub in a manner akin to managing a public house of yesteryear does have its drawbacks., however small they may be.

She added: “We have memorabilia all over the place as you can imagine in a traditional pub and we like it that way and so do our customers.

"But to be perfectly honest with you all the the polishing and cleaning of these artfecats, however interesting they may be, can be a real pain!”

HEY Diddle Diddle, my most recent riddle is Lidl, with an array of wines galore - to regale your taste buds like never before!

Enough of this paltry attempt at poetry and let us, sans délai, put their latest cellar collection to serious scrutiny!

Two whites proved alluring, namely a Viré - Clessé priced at £9.99, a typical Maçon wine with a bouquet of acacia and honeysuckle and exhibiting a slight edge and, in culinary terms, a good complement to veal and poultry.

THe Fief Des Pierres Blanches 2015 Quincy may well be regarded as a poor man's Sancerre, but this particular example from the Loire region is delightfully fruity and exudes crisp acidity, mineral freshness and a distinctive nose of pepper and white flowers. Quincy benefits from a temperate climate and ripens earlier than its illustrious neighbours in Sancerre and Menetou - Salon and is a floral delight to savour at a price of £8.99.

Furthermore, if you avail yourself of four of the cellar wines, you qualify

for a four pounds reduction equating to a pound off a bottle! Mathematical acumen notwithstanding, two keenly priced Champagnes now captivated me in view of their value for money.

THe A De Senneval Blanc de Noirs Champagne at £14.99 has a touch of citrus and a vestige of biscuitiness and represents a top - drawer party drink.

For an extra two pounds the Bissinger and Co Premium Cuvée from a small, artisan producer has the citrus and apple

notes of a young Champagne and is just beginning to manifest the richer aromas that good Champagnes develop with maturity.

Incidentally Christmas Day is looming large and a trip to Harry Boulter's Time Machine shop in the Hornet (see picture above) would seem opportune to procure the Coda Chamber Ensemble's orchestral arrangement of Pink Floyd music which I highlighted in a previous column - a veritable musical gem!

The power of positivity for the New Year!

CHRISTMAS is a time to relax, have all the family over, eat too much, go for long walks and generally unwind. It’s cold outside and the perfect time for cuddling up on the sofa to watch the classic feel good Christmas movies.

Groundhog Day has been around for a while. THe movie was made in 1993 and I am sure lots of you have watched it, but if you haven’t I would highly recommend it.

THe story is lovely, and so thoughtprovoking. Basically it’s about a man, who simply gets stuck on the same day over and over again.

At the beginning of the film he is a grumpy, unappreciative, bored-of-life middle-aged man. THen he gets stuck in this cycle of repeating his day, until he learns to be kind, more thoughtful, helpful, appreciative, considerate, happy and interested in other people’s lives.

It’s an amazing journey when you re-evaluate it after watching - its just how life is! He goes through stages of boredom, confusion, anger, frustration, rudeness, selfishness and just a sheer lack of compassion and gratitude for life. When he realises this is getting him nowhere, he has to rethink and re-build himself. He starts to see the gifts in life such as how good it makes him feel to be kind, to smile more, to be cheerful, to listen to others and actually be interested in what they have to say.

He begins to do random acts of kindness and perform good deeds without wanting anything in return.

He starts to appreciate the tiny things in life, which in turn allows him to love easier, feel much more happiness, and creates a buzz of positivity everywhere

he goes.

Yes, it all sounds very cliché! But isn’t that what life should be about? Don’t we all need to stop and think at times if we are being the best that we can be?

If everyone just tried to show kindness and care a little more, become more positive and thoughtful, and show more love and gratitude wouldn’t the world be a better place?

Creating positivity empowers us, and everyone around us! A positive outlook on life is arguably one of the greatest assets of all. Positive people expect success, good health, happiness, wealth and good relationships and those things tend to show up in their lives.

THis is not because they are already successful, or because they are more confident and outgoing, it is simply the attitude. THis is a basic law of attraction: positive thoughts breed positive results. Your thoughts are much more powerful than just electric signals between synapses, they affect your life and those around you.

Here are some positivity rules for 2017: 1. Expect good things to happen: success, love, health, happiness, wealth, a hot date! Look for opportunities for your goals to be reached at all times and pounce on them when you see them.

2. Disregard and replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Even if you started thinking something pessimistic, just take a deep breath and think the opposite, positive, thought.

3. Stop hanging out with negative people. THey drain you on a daily basis and prevent you from reaching your

positivity potential. Negative people are burdens and leeches!

4. Before starting on any new project or activity, visualise the positive outcome that you want to come from what you are doing. Fear and failure are no longer options!

5. Do things that make you happy!

Keep it simple.

6. No more saying "I can’t", only "I can!" Anything is possible with optimism.

7. Walk and sit with a straight spine and shoulders back. Good posture breeds confidence and optimism.

Also exercise regularly, even if it is only light exercise. Physical activity releases

all kinds of positive endorphins that can do wonders for even the most pessimistic people.

Your thoughts control your life, so they may as well be happy! Make 2017 your best year yet!

WELCOME to our latest column provided

by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre.

These columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help.

It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

HUMBLED am I – last night I received the Bognor Regis and Chichester Observer (am I allowed to say those words in this paper!) ‘Best Community Person’ Award. I was rather stunned and rather honoured as those that also won and shared the stage were simply awesome.

What was really delightful was that many of the nominees were Bognor Regis community champions and it really brought home that ‘my town’ feeling to the audience. I guess I’m talking about that again - yes “community spirit” are you out there?

THe concept of community spirit refers to the fact that several persons are sharing something particular. To most of us it implies a competitive spirit, a jingoistic boosterism, such as that displayed by fans of winning football teams or the citizens of a town in which they take great pride. "Our town is better than your town" might be taken as a typical expression of community spirit.

Yet in our culture of rugged individualism - in which we generally feel that we dare not be honest about ourselves, even with the person in the seat next to us - we bandy around the word "community". We apply it to almost any collection of individuals - a town, a church, a synagogue, an organisation, a housing complex, a professional association - regardless of how poorly those individuals communicate with each other. It is a false use of the word.

We only have to listen to accounts of what life was like in Britain during World War II to quickly demonstrate just how important a close real community is to all its residents. For many, having the community to rally around them became the very thing that got them through the darkest of days. THis spirit kept the nation going, and whilst we may not be at war now, we have certainly experienced tough times over the past few years.

If you knocked on ten doors along your street, the likelihood of finding a struggling family behind one of those doors is incredibly high. With redundancies being made left, right and centre, do you know how members of your community are coping in light of losing their livelihood? And vice versa: if you found yourself in a less than desirable situation, would the community know to reach out to you?

If this spirit is gone for good and we keep ourselves to ourselves, connections will never be established and we will miss out on the opportunity to make a difference to an individual or group who would truly benefit from our relationship with them. What’s more, we will miss out on the chance to accept community support if we ever wanted it in our hour of need.

Is community spirit dead and gone? Absolutely NOT. It doesn’t have to be. Take the first step by finding out if and when a community meeting has been set up. If there isn’t a meeting already scheduled, then make it your responsibility to set one up! Accepting or extending the local olive branch can lead to amazing relationships being formed reminiscent of war time morale; something we could all stand to benefit from in this difficult climate.

BOXING fans raised well over £7,000 at the latest annual charity boxing dinner held by Bognor Regis Rotary Club.

THe popular occasion was a sell-out with some 320 diners and 100 standing spectators ensuring a great atmosphere.

THis year's staging was completely rejuvenated with the help of David Dear and David Larner. Music, smoke effects and lighting were introduced along with MC Bob May, ring girl Olivia and comedian Miki Travis.

Rotarian Peter Stemp said: "THe boxing this year was second to none, featuring

bouts between Sussex and Kent. Sussex won 7-5.

"THe best Bognor ABC boxer of the night, Lukas Andriunavicius, was presented with the Des Porter Trophy and the Steve Clinton Memorial Cup was presented by Lee Penson to Alfie Winter, from the Battlebridge Club.

"THe members of the officiating body, the ABA, said that this was the best dinner show for many years."

THe final total raised for the Rotary club's work was £7,481.

THe management and staff at Butlin's has been thanked for staging the evening.

STAFF and customers at a new Bognor Regis store have wasted no time in raising money.

THe result was a fundraiser at Wickes off Shripney Road worth £700 for Alzheimer's Research UK. It is set to be the first of many similar events for the charity after its opening by town mayor Cllr Pat Dillon, pictured above.

Manager Tim Wordley said a Christmas jumper day was next. Many events were being planned for 2017 to get more money rolling in.

"All Wickes colleagues in the company had the opportunity to determine the brand new charity that Wickes will support." he said.

"Alzheimer's Research UK are our worthy winners, after receiving 59 per cent of our final vote. We will, therefore, be launching a new partnership with them."

Previously, DIY merchant Wickes had a nine-year relationship with Bloodwise, said Tim, which raised the mammoth total of £5m.

COUNCILLOR Graham Jones says ' THe objectives of the purchase (of Blake's cottage) were made very evident to me from the very beginning.' If he means from the time the cottage was purchased, he shared that knowledge with everybody who read the local and national papers. THere was general rejoicing that the cottage had been bought for the nation.

However, he goes on to claim that the objectives have not changed since. If he studies the website of the Blake Cottage Trust and the various hand-outs fed to the press, he will find that the aims have altered considerably.

THe first announcement on the website said they were ‘now planning the next stage – the renovation and restoration of the cottage’ and went on to say they intended to ‘remove the later extensions to the cottage… and build a new multifunctional building in its place.’

THat was news to us and caused considerable anger in the village, especially among people who had put effort and money into raising funds to buy the cottage in the first place. We certainly didn't want part of the cottage to be demolished. Nor did we want a new building erected in the grounds.

In a handout to the Bognor Regis Observer published on June 17, 2016, the BCT claimed that the building would act as a ‘study, library and meeting place’ and added that they were waiting for permission to carry out ‘urgent repair work to the roof WITHIN DAYS’. We waited but nothing happened. THey also told us that £50K would be spent on architectural plans and drawings for this new building and that the building itself would cost half a million.

Bold words for a trust that only had £1,462 in their bank account after they’d bought the cottage However, a subsequent article on the BCT website talked of the new half a million pound building as ‘intended to have a small space for exhibitions and conferences, another for offices and administration,’ plus ‘alternate space for a second residence.’'

A residence is a very different thing from a study, library and meeting place. If it’s going to be a residence, somebody’s going to live in it. In the meantime the months were passing and the cottage was visibly decaying.

On Saturday, July 16, 2016, I held a meeting in Felpham for local people to decide what they wanted to do about the situation. We considered starting a petition but decided not to do it then, but to watch a little longer to see if the repairs were actually begun.

THey were not.

By September, the BCT had revealed their plans for visits to the cottage, they said: 1.

‘People’ could visit the cottage on open days.

2.

Invited guests could stay and sleep in the cottage for a weekend or a week. (I wonder who they will be and who will choose them?)

3.

‘People’ can elect to become Friends of the Cottage and receive gifts from resident artists who will find refuge in the cottage.

As an exercise in elitism and snobbery, guaranteed to put backs up, it would be hard to equal. It’s hardly a welcome mat to the general public. So on September 7, 2016, I wrote another blog presenting the facts and asking people in the village whether we should start the petition we’d talked about at our meeting.

THe decision was made and a petition started. THe aims of the people of Felpham have never changed. We want Blake’s Cottage repaired. We said so very clearly in that petition.

New history book is streets ahead of the rest

Fascinating history is uncovered to explain the meaning of addresses of areas within our district that emphases this fact.

Today we have Hawthorn Road, Town Cross Avenue, Ockley Road and Victoria Road but this was not always the case. Until 1925, Hawthorn Road had the interesting names of Sheepwash Lane and Cemetery Road whilst Town Cross Avenue has been known as both Dung Cart Lane and Green Lane.

Victoria Road is shown on maps in the 1800s as 'Snaggs Lane' while today's Marine Drive West was only changed when the residents felt that the original name of Goodman Drive did not indicate its nearness to the sea.

If you have the opportunity to look at early maps of the town, it is quite interesting to note the development of certain roads, in relation to the surrounding area. One such is Essex Road, which was laid with 24 houses in 1903 and shown within an area known as ‘New Town’ on a 1904 map. Originally, it was just a connecting road between Green Lane and Cemetery Road.

As we look around the town it is sometimes difficult to determine visually the age of roads within an area. Looking at Argyle Road this was developed in 1886 with all the houses being numbered consecutively because of the fields opposite.

Eventually, in 1915 Bassett Road was developed but we then had to wait until 1925 to see the arrival of Cavendish Road which was named after a road in London where the builder lived. Alfred Hayes carried out these

WHERE do you live? Have you ever wondered why the name of your street was chosen or when in fact the road was originally built?

THere are numerous reasons for names being used in an area and they can often include the directional names, East, West, North and South. Sometimes when a new estate is built a theme is decided upon such as birds, flowers, places etc.

THen roads and streets can well be named after people, personalities and finally the commemorative address names such as Falkland Close.

Names have a tendency to be retained after their initial conception, however this is not always the case and there are a number

developments and he continued his naming theme from personal information.

For example, Wellington Road was the name of his London house and Southdown Road reminded him of his local landscape.

In this area Canada Grove was developed in 1891, and possibly named such because the area was known as being 'Canada Gardens for the Poor'.

Whilst the town commenced its development with the arrival of Sir Richard Hotham the first major expansion appears to have taken placed around the 1820s. THere was another explosion of development 100 years later in the 1920s and this is certainly emphasised by the street developments at this time.

In the 1960s the local press seemed to report much more detail on naming of roads and streets such as one report asking “Do you prefer the name of your road to be ‘plain’ or ‘fancy'."

It was reported that the naming of roads was becoming a headache and the Bognor Regis Urban District Council had a problem when they came to the street names for the Fairlands Estate, North Bersted.

THere were names such as Romney Broad Walk, Renoir Mews and Vandyke Place and one of the councillors felt that some of the names might – in the 1960s – “be too fanciful

for an estate composed of semi-detached bungalows".

THe reports continue over a number of weeks, with the decision being made eventually that ‘tree names’ would be used instead, only to find that the street nameplates had already been manufactured and delivered, thus leaving the names as planned.

Looking at street names I have often wondered how and by whom the naming was decided, so I made a telephone call to obtain the up to date information.

It would appear that the earliest legislation involved was the Town Improvement Clauses Act, 1847, Section 64/65. Currently the system is operated under the 1925 Public Health Act, Section 18 and, principally, the builder or developer has to submit his ideas for naming to Arun District Council, who consult with a number of bodies.

THis would include the Post Office to ensure no duplication or confusion with existing roads, the relevant parish or local council to ensure there are no specific objections and then the emergency services, which I found to be unusual, but if you think about it this seems to be most sensible.

Ultimately, a consensus of opinion will be advised to the builder or developer in question. With the amount of development

f One of the more traditional names around the town occurring at the moment it will obviously prove to be a nightmare for those involved, although there is a list held for possible future use. THis list includes many local personalities, local family names, musical connections etc. If you should want to submit a name yourself it is advisable to put this in writing to the local council and to Arun District Council for their deliberations.

At one time of course we simply had Lane, Road or Street, but this has now developed over the years into a wider range of addresses, which includes Gardens, Avenues, Drives, Close, Walk and Way. Naming has now changed into a wider range due to events of the time and also the wider experiences of the builders and developers. For example in the past this has occurred with roads such as Hillsboro, which was named after an area in Ilfracombe known by the builder.

Sherwood Road residents can thank Mr. H. Seymour who honeymooned in Sherwood Forest and Glenelg is the name of a place

in Scotland where the builder’s wife was born. Finally Norbren Avenue is named after Norman and Brenda, relatives of the builder.

Street maps have always shown the street or road, complete with the name, however on some of the newer maps there are a series of numbers, which are then expanded elsewhere on the map with the names of the small groups of courts and mews etc., that are springing up around the town.

For many years this information has required very detailed and time consuming research, but now all this information has been compiled into one publication for Bognor Regis by local historian Ron Iden.

Blues aiming for three in a row after PostSport routing Colchester at Oaklands Park CHICHESTER will be looking to make it three wins out of three as the Blues continue to pull themselves away from the bottom of the table.

After a dreadful run throughout October and November, Rob Lawrence's side have finally pulled their socks up.

A win on the road against Guildford was followed up by a 40-10 victory against fellow strugglers Colchester last week.

THe five points means the Blues finally have breathing space between themselves and the bottom two in the National League THree London table.

Next up are fifth placed Guernsey, who come to Oaklands Park tomorrow (2pm) and a confident Chi believe they can keep that wining feeling going against the Channel Islanders, who have lost two on the trot.

Roger Gould, the club's press officer, said: "We are now just four points adrift of rising from the relegation area and are playing with renewed team spirit. A lot will be riding on the next match against Guernsey."

Chi will be hoping to repeat the start they made against Colchester last week.

It took just three minutes for the Blues to cross the line for the first time, with hooker

A tough match saw Wadsworth & Rowland, the number one player in the averages so far this season, making their way to the final.

THe Division One final saw Whiting win the bullseye over Rowland to get the first throw, but a 140 from Wadsworth and 134 from Rowland saw them on the double first. Wadsworth & Rowland both missed the doubles, giving Rich &

Mark Giddings crashing over after a lineout drive.

Chris Johnson made it 12-0 shortly with a converted try before Chichester broke through at pace and, after a few rucks, Nick Blount stretched his long frame over for the third try THe bonus point was secured just before half time when winger Matt Woodhouse finished strongly in the corner. With the visiting Essex side replying with just one try, it was 26-5 at the break.

THe second half was even for a while and Colchester found their attempts to get back into the game frustrated by Chichester's covering and keen tackling.

THe deadlock was broken after good scrum work from the Blues saw Harry Seaman touch down at Vultures.

A yellow card for Chi and a further try for the visitors did not stop the home side from pushing on. THe victory was rounded off when Woodhouse scored his second of the afternoon, which Henry Anscombe (5 of 6) converted, to complete the 40-10 rout.

Dragon Flyers soar to regional success BISHOP Luffa pupil William Foden was jumping for joy after being crowned regional trampoline schools champion.

Foden, who was taking part in his first individual competition, took first place in the under 14 boys novice section after what his coaches described as an "amazing" performance.

He was one of nine members of the Bognor-based Dragon Flyers club to take part in the south east championships in Gillingham.

Among them was Anya Johnston (Ormiston Six Villages School) who came third in the under 19s competition, despite being three years younger than most of the opposition.

In the same category Ellie Morton (Selsey Academy) finished eighth and Jenna Partridge (Felpham Community College) placed tenth.

Elsewhere, Sofija Kalnicenko (Chichester Free School) celebrated her 12th birthday with a bronze in the 14 years and under elite group.

She was closely followed by Izzy Hauxwell (THe Regis School) and Libby Morton (Selsey Academy) in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Manon Bailey (Aldingbourne), aged seven, finished seventh in the 11yrs and under novice section while Amelia Glass, who is in Year 7, competed for the first time in the Year 9 and under novice section gaining Ormiston School 12th place out of 63 participants.

Coach Linda O'Leary said: "THe club are very proud of all their trampolinists' performance, attitude and sportsmanship.

"THe elite performers took on the very best the region had to offer and shone bright.

"With all but one having around three years left in their age groups the future looks bright.

"THe novices excelled, showed courage and style plus tremendous promise."

Dragon Flyers practise four nights a week at THe Regis School in Bognor. It currently has about 50 members, largely between the ages of five and 19, and drawn from across the south east.

Whiting time to catch up - and then take the first leg.

Rowland started the second leg with an in-shot of 103, but Rich followed with a 100 in-shot. Scores of 81 & 99 from Whiting were matched by tons from both Wadsworth & Rowland, but a 137 from Rich saw them take the lead.

Whiting missed a chance for the win, and Rowland took out 73 for the second leg.

THe final leg started with some good scoring from both pairs. Both teams then struggled to hit the finish, but eventually Rowland nailed double top, taking the leg and the win, making himself and Wadsworth the Division One Pairs Champions.

Division Two saw 16 pairs turn up. With last years champions now in Division One there would be new champions, but who would it be?

Dave Owens and Nick Hales (THe Monters) overcame Frankie Rackham & Del Hutchison (Wheatsheaf ) in the first semi while Dave Bourne & Ben Lubbe (Friary Arms) beat teammates Jordan Beacher & Ben Bambridge in the second.

THe Division Two final saw Bourne with first darts over Hales.

It was a scrappy first leg and after a few misses from both sides, it came down to the doubles. Owens struck first, hitting double top to take the first leg.

THe second leg saw no-scores from

both teams again, but this time Hales got the double-in score first. Smaller scores from both side left it quite close until Owens hit 125 to leave Hales with 52.

Hales could only leave 16 for Owens, and he only needed two darts to hit the double, making himself and Hales the Division Two Pairs Champions title.

"Much better"- Pagham's Lions return to winning ways in style Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.co.uk PAGHAM look to have steadied the ship in style, smashing 12 goals in two games just three days apart.

Mark Bennett's side had been through a bit of a rough patch, losing two crucial games and drawing with league leaders Shoreham, which left them slightly adrift from the top of the SCFL Premier.

But the Lions have come roaring back smashing six past Worthing United away last weekend, which lifted them back up to third.

A few days later, they repeated the trick at home, convincingly dispatching Loxwood in the RUR charity cup quarter final.

THe two wins set up Bennett's side nicely for a key game at Nyetimber Lane tomorrow, as they host fifth place Eastbourne United (3pm).

Chairman Tony Shea said: "We're really pleased with the way they have responded after those two losses against Eastbourne Town and AFC Uckfield. We have been a different class in the last couple of games "THe score flattered us a bit against a very good Loxwood side. But we are into a second

Bosham into cup semi-final BOSHAM left it late to overcome a battling Westfield side and make it into the quarter finals of the Sussex Intermediate Cup. THe Robins have been all conquering in the league so far this season, sitting top of the SCFL Division Two after winning 13 of their 14 matches.

But they nearly spurned the opportunity of a potential double by struggling in the last 16 of a competition the Walton Lane side have never won before.

Andy Probee's side thought they had done enough, thanks to a Bradley Miles effort on the hour mark.

Callum Dowdell and THomas Bayley got the Sids off to a fast start before THomas Kelly rounded off a good team move for the third. Into the second half, Dan Bassil fired home the Sids' fourth before Bayley teed up 16-year-old Callum Litterick who fired home his first goal in senior football.

THe Sids will look to join Bosham in the quarter finals of the Intermediate Cup tomorrow, when they travel to East Preston under 21s (3pm).

Rutherford's side last tasted defeat in the league in September, losing 3-1 against runaway leaders Shoreham.

But they never looked like repeating that as they entertained Littlehampton Town at Oaklands last weekend.

THe 4-0 loss was a bad day at the office for Town, who also had midfielder Danny Hand sent off.

THat was followed by a trip to Conference South side Eastbourne Borough in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

Despite three division separating the two sides, Chi battled hard and went down 2-1.

Scott Jones thought he had taken the game into extra time when he took advanatge of a mistake to equalise for Chi. But a late curling effort from Nathaniel Pinney sealed the win for the Sports.

SELSEY continue to soar up the table after a five star show against Oakwood.

After a stop-start season, the Blues are starting to deliver some consistency at last and were rewarded with a 5-1 win away at the Crawley-based side.

THat victory took them into ninth of the SCFL Division One, with the Blues still having up to five games in hand on the sides around them.

A repeat performance will be tough, though - with high-flying Steyning Town the visitors to the Bunn Leisure Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

Town are currently fourth, four points off top spot, and unbeaten in the past three.

THe Blues do have previous on them though, beating Steyning 6-2 in the Peter Bentley Cup on the opening game of the season.

One man who will be looking forward to the match is Morgan Forry, who continued his good run of goalscoring form.

THe front man netted twice in the win against Oakwood, making it seven in his last six games and 12 in total for the campaign.

Joe Manners and Joseph Clarke also netted in the first half for Steve Bailey's side, before Tom Groom added a fifth late on to round off the victory.

THe Steyning game is the start of a tough few weeks for the Blues.

On December 27 they travel to East Preston (3pm), who sit fifth and are regarded by some as the best side in the division.

THen it's a clash with Storrington on January 2 at home, with both sides hoping they can drag themselves up the table to take some good form into the New Year.

Howell: Rocks' rested and raring to go at Folkestone after week off Next Game

ROCKS boss Jamie Howell has said his side are fully rested and raring to get back into action after a rare week off.

Bognor have defied all the odds so far this season, sitting second in the Ryman Premier despite its small squad being decimated by injuries.

With last weekend's would be opponents Leiston in FA Trophy action, Howell's men have had no game for 11 days.

And the manager claims it has been welcomed by all as a chance to rest up and take stock ahead of the busy Christmas period. Speaking to the Post, Howell said: "We needed the rest to be honest and the break has come at the right time.

"We've had seven players out injured and there's not a single team out there that would not struggle with that number of players out."

THe Rocks kick off the Christmas period tomorrow, heading to the Kent coast to play Folkestone Invicta (2pm).

Howell will be hoping his side can rediscover some consistency with the Rocks winning two and losing two of the past four games.

THe time off has meant Gary Charman, Jimmy Muitt, Alex Parsons and Dan Beck have all had a chance to recover and are in contention to make the squad for tomorrow's trip. It will not be an easy task, though. THe Seasiders, who are currently tenth in the league, have been formidable at Cheriton

Road so far this year - losing just once in 12 home league matches so far.

Folkestone are also on a good run of form, unbeaten in five and coming off the back of a 4-2 win against Kent rivals Ramsgate in the county cup.

THey are managed by the experienced Neil Cugley, who has been with his home town club for 20 years and overseen more than 1,000 matches at the helm.

He was instrumental in leading the Seasiders to the Ryman South title last season.

Rocks' fans know that a win could take them back to the top of the table, as they currently sit one point behind leaders Needham Market who won in midweek 2-1 at Harlow Town.

THe Folkestone match will be followed by a home match against Ryman South side Horsham in the Sussex Senior Cup at Nyewood Lane (7.45pm).

Howell's options have been boosted with two new signings, with Dylan Barnett and Connor Tighe joining on a month's loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Midfielder Barnett is rejoining after a similar spell earlier in the season, which saw him grab three goals in 15 appearances.

Tighe is a Welsh winger who Rocks fans will remember from a successful spell at Nyewood towards the end of last year.

Both will be in the squad for Saturday's match at Folkestone.

Dolcetti loving life in Bognor IT may not be La Dolce Vita - but Bognor's Italian midfielder is loving life on the south coast.

Despite only being in the country for a few months, Lorenzo Dolcetti is fast becoming a fan favourite at Nyewood Lane.

Since making his debut in October, the Italian midfielder has brought a bit of continental flair to Jamie Howell's side.

And despite the odd bit of communication breakdown, the 20-year-old is starting to establish himself as a key player in the Rock's squad.

Howell said: "I'm really pleased with him.

He has got a lovely touch.

"It's taken him a little while to get used to the pace of the game in English football but he is improving week in, week out."

Dolcetti signed for THe Rocks in October 2016 after moving to the area to study at the University of Chichester.

He came to Nyewood Lane with a decent football pedigree - having made 27 appearances in Italy's Serie "D" for ASD Oltrepoveghera.

His home town of Cesena is just a few miles away from Italy's Adriatic Coast- and it seems that life by the sea is suiting the laid back

He trained at Bognor for several weeks while good to see.

While I write this, the team are on a welcome break from football. THis is because Leiston (who Bognor were due to play last Saturday), progressed into the next round of the FA Trophy, meaning Bognor’s home game against the East Anglian side didn’t take place. No football on a Saturday? Unheard of really during a busy season in the Ryman Premier League for the Rocks.

But everyone is looking forward to a busy Christmas and New Year period. Bognor travel to Folkestone Invicta this Saturday. THe coach will be running to this and I am looking forward to the trip as always. THe BRTFC Supporters Club are doing a great job subsidising the cost of coaches for the fans to near enough all of the away fixtures this season. I’ve always followed Bognor at home but now I can follow them away too! All the fans are really nice and its a great laugh on the coach - all the fans are passionate about the Rocks. If you are thinking about supporting a local club, then support Bognor.

It’s been a rather topsy turvy period for the men in green and white. Two losses and two wins in the past four matches. We succumbed to a dogged Hendon on Saturday, 26 November. We weren’t even at the races that day.

But then, we bounced back with a 2-0 victory at home to Kingstonian only days later.

We made the trip to Tonbridge Angels and got beat soundly 4-1 the following Saturday but then came back with a rather important win against strugglers Harrow Borough at a misty Nyewood Lane. THe win was expected but it was a tough match. Most fans would agree that those struggling always seem to step up their

game against those in the higher positions. And this game was no different with Harrow Borough and they might feel hard-done by given their missed penalty deep into the second half.

Obviously, a lot of the fans are comparing our performances to last season. But after the departures in the summer it was always going to be difficult to replicate the success we had.

It was one of the best seasons I have experienced, getting through to the semi finals of the FA Trophy and having the opportunity to play against, the now returned Football League side Grimsby Town at Blundell Park. It was a tight first leg with Rocks succumbing to only a 1-0 defeat at Nyewood Lane, before travelling the seven hours, give or take, to Cleethorpes to try to right the deficit. It was a great atmosphere and around 200 fans made the trip up. 2-1 was the final score, meaning it was 3-1 on aggregate. But what a great finish by Dan Beck to draw it level for 1-1!

Comparing such a season to this year, it seems that the team has taken a hit in all of the major cups, but on the other hand we are in direct competition with local rivals Havant & Waterlooville at the top of the table.

In my view, once we have Gary Charman, Harvey Whyte, and Alex Parsons 100 per cent fit, we will be ready to battle on and make a real go of the championship this season.

What a start James Fraser has had with his season so far, plus Lorenzo Dolcetti in midfield, and he is fast becoming a fan favourite. Jimmy Wild, despite a recent cheekbone/jaw injury is also gaining in confidence week in and week out, and is showing small glimpses of becoming a top striker in non-league football in years to come.
