UNANIMOUS approval has been given for a £36m swimming pool to be built in Bognor Regis.

Councillors backed the scheme which was said to secure the future of the town's Butlin's holiday resort.

THey agreed the measures which will be imposed on the firm as part of the planning permission for the ambitious project will lessen the impact of the new pool's car park on neighbouring

Bognor Regis, ahead of the other resorts, is fantastic news for the town and everyone who lives and works on the resort."

As reported, the pool will be built on the eastern edge of the resort. It will replace more than 1,000 beds in outdated staff and vacant chalets some of which date back to the site's opening in 1960.

THe single deck car park will have 558 spaces - to match the existing car

residents in Sea Road in Felpham.

Resort director Jeremy Pardey told Arun District Council's development control committee: "THis will give us one of the finest, if not the finest, pools in the UK. THis will enable us to attract more tourists to visit Bognor Regis.

"THe pool is the single biggest investment in Butlin's since Bourne Leisure bought the business in 2000.

"For the investment to be made in

Funding cut warning over groups' future SMALL community groups around Bognor Regis and Chichester could close if a funding cut is confirmed.

THe warning about the future viability of the organisations which help vulnerable people in the area has come from a charity which is supported by Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester.

Voluntary Action, chaired by Tony Sneller pictured above, is about to see its grant from Arun District Council slashed by one pound in five next week.

Arun's councillors are due on Wednesday to approve a recommendation from their cabinet to reduce its annual grant to Voluntary Action by just over £12,000 to £48,760 from April 1.

But one of VAAC's 390-plus members has told of how the area's residents will suffer if the reduction goes ahead.

Jan Sherward, from Cancer United, said she was appalled the funding could be cut and urged Arun to think again.

"Cancer United has been a member of VAAC for four years during which time the VAAC team has been an invaluable asset offering its help and support with many different projects and grant funding applications," she said.

"Since Cancer United became a member, its growth has been meteoric and VAAC has played a huge part in that by its monthly informative meetings and networking events.

"Voluntary Action is a resource that absolutely must not be lost because, if Arun allow that to happen, many small organisations, groups and charities in the area would become very vulnerable and themselves might be in danger of disappearing.

"THis country relies on charities to pick up the pieces that the private and public sector cannot cope with without organisations such as VAAC they would struggle."

Voluntary Action dates from the respective councils of voluntary service

which had served the Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton areas for decades. Most of its members are small with limited resources and funds and could be hit hard by any reduction in VAAC's support to them.

THe six months to the end of last September showed it had recruited 226 volunteers representing a value of £169,229, staged ten training courses with 66 participants, helped its members raise £1,574,473 and held 61 meetings with 24 businesses/statutory partners.

It also provided one to one support for 89 organisations with 167 sessions, staged 15 events attended by 289 participants and sent out 20 bulletins to a weekly audience of 899 people.

A spokesman for Voluntary Action said it had presented a significant amount of information and answered questions at Arun District Council's recent overview and scrutiny committee to provide members with details about its activities - in contrast to comments made at the latest cabinet meeting.

It also provides quarterly reports, with feedback from members, to the council to ensure it kept up to date with its work.

In addition, Arun has an officer and a member on the VAAC board to scrutinise and guide its actions.

Mr Sneller said Arun's smaller grant would be on top of a 20 per cent reduction in funding by the county council between 2016 and 2018.

"We have had to reduce our staffing and use reserves to deal with this, with the intention of continuing to provide an excellent service to our members," he said.

"To mitigate the impact of this further cut we will have to revise our services and dig even deeper into our reserves."

But he warned there would come a time when the reserves would run out and VAAC's future would be in doubt.

"I don't believe that the proposed living wall of ivy or the 2m timber fencing recommended by (Arun planning officer) Claire Potts will eradicate the noise from the cars."

Committee members agreed with a request from Cllr Jacky Pendleton (C, Middleton) to impose a condition - one of 26 - with the planning approval to ensure a surface which deadened the noise of tyres of vehicles going round the car park was installed to limit the sound.

Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said: "I've got some sympathy with the residents in the area and I like the idea of the surfacing.

THere has been an enormous amount of attention given to mitigation measures."

Concerns about noise from the car park and the pool were raised by Bognor Regis and Felpham councils. It was also a major complaint, along with the pollution risk, among the 48 main letters of objection to the plans received by Arun. THe loss of privacy was also raised.

Mrs Potts told the committee the pool would be a modern art deco design and comprise 6,409sq m. It will be up to 14m high with the flume tower for its rapid river ride stretching up to 18m.

Butlins' agent Stephen Brooker said approval was needed at the meeting to enable work on site to begin this June to be completed in December 2018. THe deadline was urgent because of the need to meet Natural England's requirements for the 12 bat roosting structures, as well as 25 bird boxes, to be met.

pool would be used for chalets to take the site back to its approved 1,792 accommodation units with 7,234 beds from the temporarily reduced 1,506 units with 6,046 beds. * IMPROVEMENTS to the entrance at Butlins off the Felpham Way/Upper Bognor Road also formed part of the new swimming pool plans. Butlin's will move back the gatehouse some 60m inside the holiday resort. Mr Pardey said this would enable 27 more cars to queue inside the boundary rather than on the roundabout.

THis change was welcomed by councillors. Cllr Phil Hitchins (Aldwick E) said: "THe new entrance will relieve the traffic outside."

Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: "For some years, there have been notorious problems around the roundabout and on Felpham Way at peak check-in times. Moving that gate is going to be an enormous plus."

Dream for hospice is launched IT'S been 30 years since St Wilfrid's Hospice opened.

Now, it is launching its bid to raise £4m to build a brand new hospice to care for even more patients across the area.

People across the community are being asked to lend their support to the campaign. THe new hospice, pictured left, will be built in Walton Lane in Bosham.

Chief executive Alison Moorey said: "It's absolutely fantastic. It's amazing to think what has been achieved and the thousands of people we have helped over the years.

"It's a charity that is so well loved by the community. It's fantastic to look back but it's also about looking to the future now. THere is an increasing need for our services. For several years leading up to the decision, we had known that we were running out of space on our current site.

"We looked at redeveloping the site but it wasn't possible.

"It's a really significant decision. It feels like we have been on a long journey.

"THis is the first time we have seen the outlaying of the building. To get a vision of

what it will look like is fantastic.

"THe staff and the volunteers who deliver the services do a fantastic job and that's why the hospice is so loved by the community. We know that we can rely on the community to reach this fundraising goal. It's a challenge but we think we can meet it."

THe site for the new hospice was bought in January 2016 and it was cleared of derelict glasshouses and vegetation last summer ready for building to start this July.

THe new site will have more than 50 per cent more useable space.

THis will enable the hospice to improve outpatient care, support more patients on the ward and out in the community and provide the privacy and dignity patients and their families so need.

THe project's total cost is at least £15.5m and, though some funding has been raised, the support of the community is desperately needed to help the staff achieve their dream.

Restaurant shut by police's temporary closure notice DOUBTS surround the future of a Bognor Regis restaurant.

SeaFish has remained closed this week after being forced to shut just before Christmas.

It is unknown if the business on Aldwick Road will re-open. THe Post believes the owner of the premises has taken control of the building. THe restaurant was subject to a temporary closure notice issued by magistrates on December 23 after a request from Sussex Police.

THe notice was pinned to its front door and stated SeaFish had to remain closed until a hearing at 2pm at Brighton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

It states: "A closure notice can be issued if the council or place are satisfied: "THat the use of particular premises has resulted, or is soon likely to result, in nuisance to members of the public, or; "THat there has been, or is soon likely to be, disorder near those premises associated with there use of those premises, and that the notice is necessary to prevent the nuisance or disorder continuing, recurring or occurring."

THe notice prohibits everyone except those who own the property from entering it.

No court hearing was held because it is understood the property's owner has taken back possession from the restaurant's operators and there was no need for the hearing to take place.

THe last message on the restaurant's social media page is dated December 28 and states: "It's with great regret that due to our temporary closure we need to

announce that our new year's eve show is off. Tickets have been refunded via Eventbrite and all artists will be returning to play in the future. See you in 2017."

Advertising for the week before Christmas showed a daily programme of music was held.

A request for a comment from one of the restaurant's directors, Rachel Searle,

had not been answered before the Post's deadline. Ms Searle and her fellow director Sean Parker failed to stop the premises licence for SeaFish being revoked by Arun District Council last November.

THe panel's licensing committee ruled the facility was being run as a music-led venue rather than its permitted function as a restaurant with alcohol served with

sit-down meals.

Ms Searle and Mr Parker vowed to appeal against the decision. But SeaFish had already been subject to a noise abatement noise after complaints.

An Arun spokeswoman said the actions of the building's owner meant the council had no outstanding licensing matters for the premises.

Revived new year dip back with a splash in the waves NEW year dippers in Bognor Regis spanned two centuries.

THe participants in the revived fun event to welcome in 2017 ranged from 15 to nearly 80 years old.

THe oldest was town centre resident Mary Scott, 79. She thoroughly enjoyed her walk into the waves in the 9degC temperature and the 18-28mph south west wind.

"I love the sea," she said. "You would not get me in a swimming pool. I don't think they are hygienic.

"I like being out in the open spaces. I swim most of the year round. I also like running and I do voluntary work."

THe dip was the first to be organised by Bognor Regis Swimming Club and Mary said it was her first time in the water since Halloween.

"THat was more trick than treat but I thought it was lovely in there today. I'm not cold at all," she said.

At the other end of the age scale was 15-year-old Felix Boote-Cook. He just met the minimum age requirement and took part dressed as a merman. "It was cold but it was fun. I lost the feeling in my feet but I would do it again," he said.

Sunday's event was held at Bognor Regis Yacht Club where the town's Lions club hosted a January 1 dip for decades.

THe number who took part for various charities steadily declined over the years and, added to the increasing safety needs, the club stopped holding the event a couple of years ago.

swimming club, said it only received the go ahead on December 19 to stage the revival after meeting all the safety needs.

"We've had 11 people come along - and raised £900 - even though it was arranged at such short notice. We want to carry on holding this as one of the club's major fundraising events of the year and get other clubs involved as well so they can raise money for themselves.

"It only takes ten minutes of a person's life and it's a good way to raise money without too much effort, though it did take my breath away when I went into the sea."

She entered as one of three penguins. A King Canute, complete with trident, and a pirate with skulls and crossbones could also be seen making a splash for about five minutes watched by about 70 spectators on the foreshore.

Any money which they raised was split 25 per cent to the swimming club and the rest to their chosen good cause.

Swimming club fundraiser Kelvin Hickmore suggested the dip should be restarted when fundraising events were being suggested.

"It seemed such an obvious thing for us to do added to the fact it's been stopped for a few years. I jokingly said I would do it and everyone else agreed it was a good idea. It's been good to take part and see people coming out and doing it - and not just people within the swimming club."

Yacht club honorary member Nigel Etheridge said: "It's nice to have this event back. We like to see this sort of thing here."

Fears about teenage births TEENAGE pregnancies could increase in Bognor Regis, new statistics show.

THe figures reveal visits by young people to sexual health clinics in the town have slumped by about 14 per cent in just two years. Youth campaigner Jan Cosgrove said he was worried the fall - from 8,054 attendances in 2014 to 6,912 in 2016 - could lead to more teenagers giving birth in the coming months.

"THe figures are of huge concern," said Mr Cosgrove, who leads the Number 18 Project for young people. "THere appears to be a worrying decrease in take-up, particularly among the 13-17 age range.

THis applies to both male and female.

"We might well see an increase in young pregnancies. One of the major reasons we set up a sexual health clinic in the project 20 years ago is that there was a big issue with teenage pregnancies in Bognor Regis.

"It had one of the highest rates nationally and it was important some action was taken about that.

"If 13 and 14-year-olds become pregnant, that can have a major effect on them and the community. THere is a high chance the child will grow up in all sorts of situations with poverty, education underachievement and ill health. THat all goes together."

THe decline in attendances could also lead to a rise in sexually transmitted infections, he said. Mr Cosgrove, who is also a town councillor, obtained the figures in a Freedom of Information request to inform a review by Bognor Regis Town Council into youth services.

THey cover the period April 1 to June 30

for 2014, 2015 and 2016. THe first year saw 8,054 attendances (6,223 females and 1,831 male), the second year 7,461 (5,850 and 1,611) and the third year 6,912 (5,601 and 1,311).

THe Number 18 Project, which is closed for essential maintenance, hosted a sexual health clinic in the first two years of those figures, though in the second period its provision was reduced because of a lack of take-up and heavily disrupted staffing provision from the NHS. Other clinics have been provided at varying times at the county council's FindItOut centre in Bognor Regis town centre, Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital through the health service and at Treetops in North Bersted.

THe sexual health clinics provided genito-urinary medicine, contraception, chlamydia screening and the CCard for free condoms. THey cater for 13 to 24 year olds. THe younger age ranges have seen the steepest declines in year-on-year attendances by up to 68.2 per cent.

"It's all right saying 13 and 14 year olds shouldn't be having sex," said Mr Cosgrove, "but they do and it is our job to reduce the consequences for them. It's as much about the infections as it is about pregnancies."

THe two clinics at the town's hospital are run by the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. THe sexual health clinic deals with infection screening and treatment, HIV testing, chlamydia testing and treatment, termination/abortion referrals, free condoms and contraception.

THe contraception clinic also covers contraception procedures.

Rise in rail fares RAIL passengers in Bognor Regis are having to pay more to travel by train.

Fares went up by an average of 1.8 per cent on Monday in amid an ongoing series of strikes which have blighted the town's services for months.

THe rise meant an annual season ticket to London Victoria has soared by £100 to £5,424 and an annual season ticket to Worthing costs £822.60 compared to £808.50.

Services continued to be affected this week by the ongoing disputes by the RMT and Aslef unions against the intention of train operator, Southern Railway, to bring in driver-only operated services.

Trevor Tupper, the secretary of the West Sussex Rail Users' Association, said: "THe increases of regulated fares are set by the government. THere is nothing Southern can do about them.

"THey are linked to the RPI inflation rate last July.

"THe timing of the increases is unfortunate but the feeling I get from our members is that the rises are one of the things they just put up with.

But they are more concerned at the moment with having trains to catch."

Next week will see train drivers strike to halt all Southern services for three days instead of the previously declared five day strike.

"I wanted to keep this part of the history of Bognor Regis alive - and we will still be doing our book exchange where people can come in with their books and earn points to put towards others.

"I hope, though, by expanding into new markets it will provide other ways to fulfill people's needs for specialist or hard to get books."

Jason is also looking to set up links with Bognor Regis area writers' groups.

NEW Bognor Regis bookshop owner Jason Passingham has declared his business a Kindle free zone.

Jason has bought the popular Heygate's Bookshop because of his faith in the future of hardbacks and paperbacks.

He said: "We are for book lovers and not for those who only want to use Kindles.

"Kindles are fine for going away with but I think people want to settle down with a book at home. THe two will go together for a long time to come."

He has thousands of secondhand tomes packed into his High Street premises. Authors like Ian Fleming, John Grisham, Robert Harris and Karin Slaughter are joined by reference books in an A-Z of subjects.

If Jason hasn't got it in stock, he's sure to know someone who has.

Good news for marketing experts

` Hope for highway safety improvements SAFETY of drivers will be improved if plans for Rowan Way in Bognor Regis go ahead.

THe dangerous junction that joins the A29 and A259 beside the Bognor Regis Retail Park has long since been an area of concern for local residents.

At a Felpham Parish Council meeting on Tuesday County Cllr Graham Jones revealed that plans to make changes to the road had been recently approved and the project is now through to the design stage.

THe next step would then be public consultation, which could then see work carried out in on the road in 2018.

Cllr Jones expressed his delight that these steps had been taken. He said: “THere has been a lot of public outcry about the junction over the years.

Getting in and out is a nightmare.”

THe issue was previously raised and consequently rejected two years ago. However, since the opening of the Bognor Regis relief road last year the stream of traffic in that area has increased therefore raising further worries about the safety of drivers.

Although nothing is set in stone yet Cllr Jones was optimistic about the future of the junction.

Cllr Michael Harvey agreed, and said: "I'm glad it has finally been given priority."

THere was also further anticipation that work on a deceleration lane for Comet Corner in Middleton may begin in February after several delays.

Dancers get national title STREET dancers based in Chichester are the best in the country.

South Coast Crew came first in their category in the UK Championships 101 finals held at Crawley.

THe dancers wowed the judges with their routine at the K2 Centre. Being in the over 17 category meant the competition was tougher than ever but the 12 crew members overcame the opposition.

THe crew consists of Megan Kelly, Issi and Lauren Ware, Imogen Deacon, Imogen Heartley, Shannon Parker, Eva Bacchoo, Megan Ward, Harry Dunster, Paris Terry, Maddy Bowley and Rhys Bradley. THey are led by dance teacher Lee Seargent who passes on his dedication and love for street dance.

A spokesman for the dancers said: "THe crew has been together for nearly six years and are a tight family unit.

"THey range from 13 to 19 years old and, as if that wasn't enough for Lee, he has now extended into two other crews, SC Flipside and SC Unity.

"Each year, they are gaining in experience and confidence proving this by amazing competition wins."

THe crew stage a yearly show at the Alexandra THeatre in Bognor Regis.

THe next will be held on May 23 and will be invaluable in helping the dancers to get as much practice as possible for competitions such as the world championships.

"THey have relentless rehearsal schedules and each and every member is dedicated to the crew's success," the spokesman said. Lee is keen to get a sponsor for the crew for vital equipment like dance clothes and dance space.

NRG Marketing is celebrating 20 years dealing with the popular historic attraction's campaigns as its owners, the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk, seek to move with the times.

NRG managing director Robin Parker said a typical client/agency relationship in the world of marketing was around five years.

"It's quite something to not only look back on the various campaigns that our agency has handled but also to appreciate that, when we started, the children of the Duke and Duchess (of Norfolk) were very young.

"Now they've all grown up, been through university and are carving out

lives of their own," he said.

"It's also very satisfying to know that the visitor numbers have steadily risen over the years, which is not only down to the marketing campaigns, but also in assisting with some strategic decisions as a 'business partner' to the castle."

THe past 20 years have seen the advertising industry change dramatically.

Rebecca gets 2017 off to a speedy start PARKRUN winner Rebecca Moore has run from Bognor Regis to Bermuda.

Rebecca strode home in the town's New Year's Day parkrun to be the overall event winner as well as the first woman across the finishing line.

It was her second success in two days as she achieved the same feat in Chichester on December 31. THe triumphs were the perfect send-off for her journey to the Atlantic island this week to represent England in an international 10k race.

Medical student Rebecca, 20, of Rustington, said: "It will be my second time running for England. It should be good fun and I'm looking forward to it.

"I ran for England in a 10k race in Dublin last year when I finished in the top ten and England came second.

"It was really exciting to get on a plane and fly to represent England and a real occasion. THis year will be the same.

"I was selected again after I ran 56 mins 30secs to achieve the qualifying time in the Great South Run in Portsmouth last autumn."

Rebecca crossed the finishing line in Hotham Park in a remarkable 17mins 53sec. Her ability to complete the 5km course was shown in the three minute and 12 second gap she enjoyed over the fastest male runner.

"I like parkrun and the fact you only have

to decided to enter on the day.

"I think I've won here once before a d it's nice to have won today. I enjoy being here.

I'm just about to qualify so I may be back here more often in the future," she said.

A total of 165 entrants lined up in the parkrun which opened 2017. Event director Jason Rae, pictured right insert, said it was the fourth run in just nine days.

Two of them had attracted the second and third highest turnouts since the Bognor Regis event started in May 2014.

"THis is the third New Year's Day run we've held," he said. "We started it because we realised there are a lot of people who don't see many others at this time of year.

It was a success and set a precedent and people now expect it."

THe larger fields prompted a pre-run plea for the entrants to respect walkers in the park and adjacent Church Lane, which also forms part of the route.

"We did get a few complaints from dog walkers at the start but they know we are here at 9am on Saturdays. THey have kind of accepted it but we will never please everyone," he said.

First man home on January 1 was Jack Penfold. THe 20-year-old from Pagham finished in 20:05 for a new personal best.

His win followed his overall success in the Chichester parkrun earlier in the morning in 20:16.

"It feels good to have won both parkruns on the same day," he said. "I didn't expect to win at Chichester but I stayed with the front group and felt good towards the end so I just went for it.

"I was the fourth male here but saw the second and third runners were close together. I charged them on the back straight and that got me in front - and I just managed to stay there."

It was his fifth Bognor Regis parkrun and improved on his previous placings in and around the top five.

A member of Bognor Regis Tone Zone Runners, he is working towards his first marathon, in Brighton, this April after completing four Bognor Prom 10k races so far.

A stride behind him in the parkrun was Steven Amos, 28, of Felpham in 26:06.

"It was my third parkrun here," he said, 'and my best placing - against fifth and seventh - but my worst time. I entered the Chichester parkrun a couple of years ago but then I moved here.

"It's a better course here because it's not hilly or muddy."

` New children's contract awarded CHILDREN'S public health services in West Sussex will continue to be provided by an NHS body.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the contract for the 0-19 public health community nursing service for families in the county.

THe agreement starts next April 1 and lasts for five years. THere is an option for a further two years. It was awarded after a competitive process

by West Sussex County Council.

THe trust is the current provider of the healthy child programme of health visiting, school nursing and the family nurse partnership.

It will work with the council to create a more integrated service and bring together health visiting, school nurses and early help and prevention services into a single model.

Siobhan Melia, the trust's chief executive, said: "I am delighted that we have been awarded this contract and that the council has backed our vision for the future of this service.

"We are committed to ensuring that families and young people experience an extensive range of excellent, localised, seamless support and we look forward to working with the council to make this a reality for people in West Sussex."

Chance to learn about life from the streets of the city

PEOPLE in Chichester will have a chance later this month to discover if their streets are paved with wisdom.

A Street Wisdom workshop is being held by Chris Bemrose on January 21.

It follows a similar session he held in Bognor Regis just before Christmas.

Six people went along to search for enlightment and spent three hours exploring their surroundings and how they related to them.

Chris said: "Participants were given a series of exercises to help them connect with the street.

"Following this, they were invited to come up with a question to which they were looking for answers.

"One had become confused with options for moving house. Another was wondering about possible new directions in work.

"A third was wondering about how to manage their team more effectively at work. Others were seeking inspirations for new year's resolutions or ideas for new interests to take up.

"In all cases, the street seemed to have something to say, whether in the form of particular signs or notices that resonated with people, encounters with passersby or sights that connected to people's memories or thoughts."

THe jobseeker was prompted by a sign for a handyman - and a notice full of railway rules and regulations - to ponder the likelihood of enjoying selfemployment rather than working for a

large organisation.

"Different people with the same question would inevitably have been struck by different things, and hence led to different conclusions," said Chris.

He describes himself as a spiritual street artist and hopes the Chichester workshop will produce equally productive results.

It will start at 2pm in the city centre, last for three hours and is free. Sometimes, people will go on retreats in the middle of nowhere to sort out problems and questions. Street wisdom was invented by creative maestro David Pearl in 2013 and developed with the help of business beatnik and fellow author Chris BarezBrown.

It was an experimental idea that has rapidly grown into a global movement to make every street a free source of inspiration for everyone every day.

Chris is a former management consultant who has worked with Bognor Regis-based charity L'Arche for the past 21 years in France and the UK. He recently completed an MA in social sculpture at Oxford Brookes University.

He also holds Quiet Garden days at Runcton Manor.

I hope you all had great Christmas and New Year celebrations!

For those of you familiar with me, you will know how much I love this time of year. Parties, family, friends, and as many people as we can squash in the house on New Years Eve! But equally, as soon as the 1st of January is over, the decorations are down, everything is packed away and the new years resolutions begin!

I love January, despite the fact the weather's not brilliant and the bank account is empty. It feels like I somehow have permission to start a fresh, clear out the clutter (including people that drain me) and make positive plans to improve my life and those around me.

I am reading so many articles at the moment that say ‘why wait until the new year to change your life!’. Yes, I agree with that, but equally, now that the new year is here, grab the bull by the horns, and make those changes. I wanted to give you some new and incredible information to start the new year with. After all there is so much to say.

Exercise for example, is as important as the good food that you eat every day. Mindfulness, meditation and yoga and are all vital to give you the headspace that you need in order to make changes for the better.

Sleep plays a vital role in your wellbeing, because being deprived effects every cell in your body, ages you and can lead to depression if your not getting enough.

But in order to get these balances in your life, it comes back to the same fundamental principle: you must eat well!

Boring, I hear you snore! But it's true. You are exactly what you eat. If you have pain or inflammation anywhere in your body, you need to eat more alkalizing foods. If you don’t believe me, just try it for two weeks and see the reality, feel less pain, have more energy, focus and enthusiasm.

Sleep better; exercise more and your reactions to life will be happier, more mindful and far

more optimistic.

Whether you like it or not eating healthy has oodles of positive benefits - for the body and the mind alike. When we eat well, the wonderful cycle of positivity continues.

We met with Richard, the owner of this brand-new Flip Out, and it was plain to see his excitement for his latest venture, including his enthusiasm for how trampolining can improve our health and fitness. Jenny's Journey

IT’S that time of year. You know the feeling; you’ve over indulged, zips are tight, body bulges are rampant and clothes strain to breaking point. Yes it’s time for yet another new year’s resolution to lose weight and get fit.

THe easy bit is making the resolution. THe hard bit is keeping to it. Over the next few weeks many will vow to get in shape and recapture the time when they were slimmer and fitter. Many sadly will fall by the wayside but as an incentive to those who really want to achieve their goal, here’s a personal tale of success.

Jenny is a school teacher in Bognor Regis spoke of her fitness journey with the Arena. She said: “I have always been a big girl.

At nearly 6ft tall I could carry the weight. But when, on the completion of my teacher training in July 2011, I reached nineteen and a half stone, life had to change; so the 'nothing nice' diet as I called it started in January 2012.”

Holistic health at Yoga Garden I first met Nina Fowkes, a year ago at Yoga Garden and she was equally as tranquil as the beautiful surroundings of the site.

The difficulty of the decision to have a hip or knee replacement.

Lee Taylor, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chichester Nuffield Hospital Any decision that does not involve life or death is extremely difficult on a personal level. In the case of hip or knee surgery it is all about quality of life and a lifestyle choice. No sensible person wants to subject themselves to surgery unless it is really necessary. But it is important not to be in denial about the level of disability, as impacts, not only on the individual but on those close to them. Unfortunately pain from the arthritic joint, eventually wins. For even the most nervous, there is eventually no choice but to overcome their understandable fear. When the painful joint has been replaced there is a full realisation of how disabled the sufferer had become.

Reassurance and accurate information can help to reduce anxiety. Of course surgery can have its problems and complications, but like all decisions in life there is a balance of ‘risk vs benefit’. The internet age is a two edged sword. It is a potential minefield of misinformation.

Fundamentally the decision is about trust. As a doctor if I engage the services of a solicitor, accountant or another doctor, I am placing my trust in them to do the best for me, relying on their professional standards and ethics. As a patient or client to place that trust I need to be sure my questions and concerns have been answered satisfactorily and I have a rapport with the professional.

In my experience patients have many concerns about undergoing joint replacement surgery, but the most common worries relate to their age and the need for revision surgery, the type of artificial joint, the materials, the size of the incision, the period of incapacity, are there advances worth waiting for and will I be able

to manage on my own at home? Surprisingly the risk and types of complications are only infrequently raised. It is the responsibility of the surgeon to explain these, but it is hard for patients to take in all they are told when they are making such difficult decisions. The relief of their pain is their overriding concern. Surgeons are aware how anxiety limits the ability to retain information.

The age argument is important because the younger the patient, the greater is the likelihood that revision surgery will be necessary. To counter that argument the quality of life and expectations at a younger age may be very different to fifteen years on (an average life expectancy of a joint replacement). Is struggling on at a younger age worthwhile? Struggling on for an extra 1-2 years with increasing pain would appear to offer little benefit. Minimal Incision Surgery has been shown to have cosmetic benefits but at the expense of an increase complication rate.

The hospital stay for both hips and knees has safely been reduced to 3-4 days by enhanced recovery programmes. Most patients will make 80-90% of their recovery within 3 months when they resume sports like golf, tennis and the gym. The improvements in analgesia and the use of spinal anaesthesia has improved pain control and ease of rehabilitation. I have genuinely not seen in my entire career a patient readmitted because they could not manage at home.

Any advances have to be proven over a number of years. The principles of both hip and knee replacement are well established, with no meaningful advances on the horizon.

More cemented joints are used in over

65’s and non-cemented under 65’s, but the National Joint Registry demonstrates the evidence is marginal and both types function well in all ages. Regarding materials there are theoretical benefits to complete ceramic bearings (ball and sockets) but data is not available to say they outlast metal/ polyethylene or ceramic/polyethylene articulations. Ceramic on polyethylene, on evidence, is the gold standard. The much publicised and promoted metal on metal and resurfacing hip replacements have only very selected indications in men and are effectively resigned, quite rightly, to history in women.

Unicompartmental (half) knee replacements give excellent function because the cruciate ligaments are preserved, giving the knee a more natural feel. They are not suited to all knees and there is a risk that the other parts of the knee can wear out. In my clinical experience this wear is very uncommon before 10 years. To proceed to a half knee should always follow a full discussion of risks vs benefits.

Although the decision to undergo hip or knee surgery is a major one in anyone’s life, the technology is now well established, the results reproducible and rehabilitation has improved.

Competition brings out best ideas in customers of Squires CHRISTMAS creativity by customers of a Bognor Regis shop created a host of festive feelings.

THe 32 entries received by Squires for its first Christmas competition produced a range of items full of imagination and originality from those aged four to 69.

THey varied from Father Christmas to reindeer to a winter wonderland to a footprint in green paint entitled Mistletoes.

Another entrant had used last summer’s Euro referendum to depict the Star of Bethlehem as part of the symbol of a disintegrating EU symbol in contrast to the childish charm of old socks simply turned into snowmen.

Kayleigh Tongue, the competition’s organiser at the model and craft tool specialist, said the response had made it a delight to stage the contest and showed imagination was unlimited by age.

“To have this size of entry so close to our Halloween competition was really good. THe entries are all good and it’s lovely to see the things that people of all ages have made.

“THey have taken a lot of time and effort to create these items and we are grateful to them for that.

“It just shows the iagination that people have and I’m gobsmacked at the amount of work and thought that has gone into them. Some of them were so good that our customers have been asking to buy them.

“We will be looking at running the competition again but holding it slightly earlier so the entries can be returned in time for Christmas.”

THe entries were judged by representatives of the Bognor Regis Post and Chichester Post on Tuesday - and they faced a tough task in deciding the merits of each one.

THere were four categories in the competition most festive, most original, most effort and best use of medium/materials. THe winner of each has been given £100 in gift vouchers.

A separate category was also arranged for the under 16s with three prizes of £50, £30 and £20.

All those who took part have also been given a £5 gift voucher donated by Picturedrome Cinema managing director Adam Cunard. He said: “I’m happy to support those who took part in the competition. As we saw in the Halloween competiton, the entries were again stunning and

it is clear that there are a lot of imaginative and creative people in this area.”

Entries had to be handmade but could be created from crochet, knitting, wood, papier mache or any other material which fired the imagination of their creator. THey had to be submitted by 2pm on Christmas Eve. THe winner of the most festive entry was judged to be the Christmas house made by Lubova Groholska, 26, from Bognor Regis, for the sheer amount of detail it contained. Every centimetre was crammed with a reference to Christmas.

THe most original entry was Irina Neverovska, 50, from Bognor Regis, for her stunning canzeshi-style satin and pearl Christmas tree.

‘Holly’ and ‘Ivy’ the reindeer earned Pagham resident Jade Hurdle, 26, first prize in the best use of material category for her use of the shrubs with the wooden models.

A hand-stitched embroidered quilt saw Anne Scicluna, 76, of Chichester, take the first place for the most effort.

In the category for the under-16s, first place went to Amber Oeder, eight, from Barnham, for her winter wonderland in a box. A Christmas sprite in a jar earned Millie Stallard, six, from Bognor Regis, the runner’s up spot and Bognor Regis 11-year-old Riley Clark was third for his decorated paintbrushes.

Kayleigh said the new year would bring a host of improvements to the London Road premises of Squires.

“We are aiming to become the best independent arts and crafts retailer in the UK,” she said. We will be extending our ranges to include more products from model-making to fine arts.

“We intend to have something for everyone so that anyone who wants to make an item can find what they want here.”

THe changes would also extend to improving the premises. “THis building was not created as a shop and we will be making it brighter and more inviting for our customers,” said Kayleigh. “THe front of the building will also be getting a facelift as well to bring new people in alongside our loyal customers whose support we appreciate.

“It’s all a work in progress so it’s a case of watching this space!”

Make every meal a celebration at the Royal Gurkha restaurant ON a wintery December night the Royal Ghurkha presented a welcoming site in Bognor’s West End, Aldwick Road, with its festive lights twinkling and brightly lit signage.

Upon entering were greeted by a serene and warm atmosphere, with uncluttered and simple décor, predominated by a tasteful deep red. All this complimented by some fascinating pictures and artifacts of Nepal.

THere’s a small intimate bar, and even a fish tank on display. Authentic Asian music playing in the background added to the illusion of being transported to an exotic place, very far away.

We were made very welcome, shown to our seats, and were given the menus. Santosh, the manager, recommended some dishes based on their classic Nepalese recipes, although they do a full selection of the more traditional Indian fare too. THe more specialist ingredients

for which are sourced from London ,and the cooking is all done on the premises by Nepalese and Indian chefs.

THe Royal Ghurkha has been established for an impressive 9 years, so they certainly know their stuff!

We started with some crispy papadams and dips, most enjoyable, particularly with a refreshingly chilled pint of Cobra Indian Beer, just the thing to whet our appetites for the main feast!

I’d been particularly looking forward to the Momo Chicken; which are sumptuous home made plump steamed dumplings full of minced chicken mixed with Nepalese Spices, and served with a piquant tomato chutney, exceptionally tasty and flavoursome, as well as being a healthier choice for those watching their weight! THey also offer a Momo Lamb, which I will certainly be trying another time.

Slow cooked tender lamb is surely one of the most desirable dishes for any lover of meat dishes. THe Hariyali Lamb, with chunks of succulent boneless lamb, cooked in a mint and coriander sauce with spring onion, garlic ginger and green chillies was an absolute delight, spicy and warm, but not overpoweringly so.

Santosh brought us some deliciously sweet peshwari nans, to accompany our meal. THe taste of the coconut flavour dipped into the thick green sauce of the lamb's sauce was indescribably good.

As well as the lamb we were keen to try a Nepalese chicken dish, and the Everest Chicken did not disappoint, consisting of fragrant tender boneless chicken pieces, cooked in aromatic Nepalese sauce, topped off with chunky sweet mango slices. Described as medium spice, still it had a spicy kick to it, to really wake up the taste buds without losing the subtleties of the more delicate underlying flavours.

To compliment our main dishes we also enjoyed the Nepalese Mixed Meat spicy noodles, a whole heap of flavour on one plate: luscious thick noodles with generous chunks of chicken tikka, lamb tikka and prawns - really a meal in itself.

For me, a side dish of potato curry is essential, and on this occasion we tried the Aloo Rajma Curry, which consisted of floury boiled potatoes, lightly spiced and intertwined with nutty kidney beans, all enveloped in light curry sauce with a tomato base, a perfect marriage which I had not tried before, but would certainly do again.

and we had the mushroom version, a great choice, although there is a full menu of rice dishes to choose from, pilau, egg, onion, and lemon, to name just a few.

THe combined flavours of the various dishes was superb and the cuisine overall is of the highest quality and standard. Santosh himself is Nepalese, and explained that in Nepal, every day is like Christmas Day with a banquet in the evening enjoyed by all the family. Oh.. to be Nepalese I thought!

Although there are a lot of Indian Restaurants around the area, Nepalese dishes are that little bit different and offer something special and distinct for the discerning diner. A large family group were dining at the same time as ourselves and clearly enjoyed their meal every bit as much as we did.

A return visit is a must, as there are so many interesting dishes to try on the menu, and prices are exceptionally reasonable with a set meal for two only £11.90 and specialities ranging from £5.00 for the Chicken Tikka Naan Bread Roll to £10 for the Royal Ghurkha Special.

If you are looking to dine out locally, whether as a couple or a group, and enjoy trying unique and unusual dishes, THe Royal Ghurkha is a must. We spent a lovely evening there, and I will certainly be going back again very soon with family and friends to sample some of the other delights on the menu.

Sancerre offer is a good deal Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

WHEN in Rome, do as the Romans , so to speak, so when in London it behoves one to partake of sustenance and wine at Harvey Nicks as I did pre-Christmas with a fine classical bottle of Sancerre as pictured above!

2016 has seen the demise of so many musical idols , so let us hope for a more forgiving 2017 and reflect upon some of the best wines on offer locally in 2016. Lidl's wine cellar this December has unearthed some gems including a beautifully refreshing poor man's Sancerre, namely a Quincy of some note. THe Maçon - Villages 2014 at under eight pounds surpassed all my expectations and exuded ripe apple fruit with a decidedly creamy finish - one to snap up in either Bognor or Chichester store if stocks persist as it is a glorious example of basic Burgundy.

In terms of red wines I was seduced by a 2009 Barolo Vendemmia Riserva which is ready to drink now in view of its age and is full of red cherry and spices initially with delightful stewed fruits to follow and a long finish and

at an attractive price of £12.99 is a fine introduction to the nebbiolo grape .

Nevertheless at a most enticing price tag of a mere £12.49 the 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is truly captivating! THe wine is made from partially dried grapes and exudes cherry and damson fruit and lush dark berry flavours are prominent culminating in a complex savoury finish tinged with spice and a hint of chocolate - one to savour!

One very clear highlight of 2016 was the Gusto Wines wine-tasting extravaganza at Fontwell racecourse and I retain fond memories of a Negroamaro Alfredo Rocca Salento

with its complex bouquet and hints of spice and chocolate and oak to the fore!

Transporting ourselves to 2017 I have seen no obvious bargains as such, but on a casual visit to Sainsbury's managed to procure a perfectly palatable McGuigan Classic Cabernet Sauvignon from 2015 for a very competitive £5.50 exhibiting intense cassis fruit. For an extra £1.25 I espied a 2008 La Niña Roja Gran Reserva sporting delicious aromas of spice and vanilla combined with red berries and a good buy considering its age.

Happy New Year, one and all, and may Bacchus reign in 2017!

PRAWN & COCONUT CURRY INGREDIENTS • 2 onions - sliced • thumb-size piece fresh root ginger, grated • 4 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 tbsp sunflower oil • ½ tsp turmeric • 1 tbsp ground coriander • 400ml can chopped tomatoes in rich juice • 100g creamed coconut, chopped • 1 tbsp mango chutney • 1 green chilli, halved, deseeded and sliced at an angle • 3 x 200g bags large, raw, peeled prawn, thawed if frozen, drained • handful chopped coriander • juice 1 lemon

METHOD 1. Fry the onions, ginger and garlic in the oil for about 10 mins. Stir in the turmeric and coriander, then fry for 1 min more.

Tip the mixture into a blender with the tomatoes and creamed coconut, then blend to a purée.

2. Return to the pan with 300ml water, the chutney, chilli and pepper and simmer for

10 mins. You can freeze it at this stage.

3. Stir in the prawns and cook for a few mins more until they turn pink – take care not to overcook them or they’ll become tough. Add the coriander, then season to taste with salt, pepper and lemon juice just before serving.

Ski ace Yasmin's Olympic hopes PostSport boosted with winning end to year Tim Ridgway Winter Sports sport@sussexpost.co.uk TEENAGE ski ace Yasmin Cooper has her sights set on a Winter Olympic dream as she ended 2016 on a high.

THe 17-year-old exceeded all expectations in the last 12 months, kicking off the year representing Great Britain at the Youth Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer.

Yasmin finished 13th in the super combined - the best result achieved in alpine skiing by any British athlete in the competition.

THat was followed by nine trophies at the 2016 British National Championships, which included the overall Junior British title and U18 and U21 British Downhill titles.

A trip for a summer 'winter camp' to Chile followed before a return to THe Alps for the European season.

THe year was rounded off just a few days before Christmas when the Chichester sixth form student secured an international FIS win, as well as two personal bests in northern Italy. Speaking at the end of the 2016 season, Yasmin said: "THis season has taught me a lot

about myself and what standards I have come to expect of myself.

"I realised, especially with the downhill, that if I put my mind to it, and go in with a clear and unhindered view, then I will achieve what I want to achieve."

With Yasmin now back on the slopes, she has her sights set on more success.

A major objective is to lower her FIS points across all disciplines and retain any British titles in 2017.

THe teenager also hopes to compete in the Junior World Championships in Sweden, and will strive towards her goal of competing in the Senior Olympics in PyeongChang 2018.

THe overall goal, however, remains the Beijing Olympics 2022 - something she could barely have dreamt of when she started skiing aged six in Chamonix, France.

After developing her skills at Southampton dry slope, she progressed to Indoor Circuit Races and then Alpine Ski Racing, where she began training with THe British Ski Academy.

Now she's flying the flag for her country, regularly competing against the best in the world in her age group.

DARTS players from across Sussex are set to flock to Bognor Regis next month to take on one of the true characters in the sport.

Wayne Mardle, pictured above, was a top-five player in the world who regularly reached the latter stages of competitions against the best in the world.

Now a Sky Sports pundit, the player known as Hawaii 501 - due to the brightness of his shirts - will be the star attraction of an evening at Seasons in Nyewood Lane on February 4.

It is being hosted by local darts events company HG Media & Events, which is also giving some local players a chance to pit their skills against Mardle.

One of those who may fancy his chances is Newtown Amity's Alex Norgett, who fired a remarkable 158 out-shot as his side cruised to victory against Chi Snooker A in the Friday ‘Benevolent’ Darts League.

Blues eye-up winning start to year Tim Ridgway Rugby sport@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER will be hoping to kick start the new year as they mean to go on, with a 270-mile round trip to Cambridgeshire to face Shelford.

2016 was an eventful year for the Blues, with the club celebrating their 90th birthday and consolidating their National League Division THree London status.

But, the year ended in disappointing fashion, with Rob Lawrence's side losing out to Guernsey 18 - 25 in a game they had enough chances to win.

It meant the Blues ended the year third bottom and now face a battle to drag themselves to safety.

After a fortnight off for Christmas, the Blues return to action tomorrow at Shelford (2pm).

After a poor October and November, Chi finally got going in December, clocking up two much-needed bonus point victories against

Guildford and Colchester.

Speaking after the Guernsey match, Roger Gould, the club's secretary, said: "Chichester have been much improved in their last three matches and taken 11 points from a possible 15.

"THey now face four more crunch games in January, two of them away.

"THey will have to dig deep but their commitment has been demonstrated."

Even after picking up form of late, the Blues are still third-bottom and in need of a much better second half of the season if they are to escape the drop.

THey will not have it easy against the Cambridgeshire villagers.

THe home side currently sit fifth in a very competitive division and go into the game off the back of a convincing win over secondbottom Colchester.

THat made it three wins from four, with the defeat coming against high-flying Wimbledon - something Chi will be hoping to emulate tomorrow.

Chi on verge of FA Vase history CHICHESTER City are on the verge of making FA Vase history for the club as they take on Devon-side Buckland Athletic in the last 32 of the national competition.

THe Lillywhites have been in excellent form in all competitions this season - sitting third in the SCFL Premier and equalling the club's best run in the FA Vase.

Standing in the way of Chi and a first-ever last 16 tie is Buckland Athletic, who must make a 300-mile round trip for the match at Oaklands Park tomorrow (3pm) Manager Miles Rutherford said: "It will not be an easy game. Any side that has made it to the last 32 of the Vase will be a good side.

"But we know that on our day we are a match for anyone at this level."

Chi go into the match off the back of a successful Christmas period.

On December 20, they beat in-form Lancing 3-1 on the artificial pitch at the Sussex FA headquarters.

THat was followed up by a 1-1 draw against rivals Pagham at Oaklands Park, Kieran Hartley getting the goal.

THen Hartley made it two in two, getting the winner against Arundel on Bank Holiday Monday.

THat win continued an unbeaten run in the league which stretches back to the start of September.

Western League Premier side Buckland have not tasted defeat in a while either - 11 games in all competitions to be exact.

Sitting fourth in their division, the Newton Abbotbased side have hopes of gaining promotion to the Southern League this season.

Buckland have already tested themselves against SCFL Premier opponents this year, beating Horsham YMCA 3-0 in the last round of the Vase.

Chi meanwhile have beaten Kent sides Whitstable Town, Sheppey United, Ash United and Canterbury City, as well as fellow SCFL Premier team Newhaven in the last round.

PAGHAM chairman Tony Shea is calling on his Lions team to get over a disappointing December and get the campaign back on track.

THe Nyetimber Lane side won just once in the league last month, a run which saw Mark Bennett's side drop to fifth in the SCFL Premier.

Two draws over local rivals Chichester City and Wick over the Christmas period helped take the Lions back up to fourth.

But, with more than half the games gone this season, they sit 15 points behind first-placed Shoreham.

Pagham have a chance to get over the slump when they travel to second-placed Haywards Heath tomorrow (3pm).

Shea said: "I'm still happy with how things are going overall but we've had a disappointing December. THere's no better place to get things going again than by visiting a side that's above us. It's a massive game for us and we're going up there to win."

Pagham started the Christmas period by visiting Chichester City on Boxing Day.

In what was a drab affair, a late Scott Murfin strike sealed a point for the Lions.

THat was followed by a 2-2 draw against a struggling Wick side which featured many former Pagham players. Two second half strikes from Lloyd Rowlatt and Callum Overton put the Lions 2-1 up before a late equaliser spoiled the New Year party.

Shea said: "To be fair, the performances weren't really there. |"THe Chi match was a pretty dead game. It just looked like both sides had eaten too much turkey. But we are happy with a point.

"Against Wick, we just weren't up to the standard that we set ourselves earlier in the season."

Robins flying at top of table Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.co.uk MARCO Giambelardini scored a hat-trick to keep the Robins of Bosham flying high at the top of the SCFL Division Two. Andy Probee's side started the new year as they ended the last, beating Clymping 5-1 at Walton Lane on Monday.

Graeme Dowden bagged a brace, but it was Giambelardini who went home with the match ball, netting his third on the stroke of 90 minutes.

THe win keeps Bosham eight points clear at the top of the table and means they go into 2017 unbeaten in the league with 15 wins from 16. Next up for the Robins is a home match against third-place Jarvis Brook at Walton Lane tomorrow (2pm).

Sidlesham kept up the pressure on the Robins with a 3-0 away win against Rustington on Monday.

Daren Pearce's side went in to the match with plenty to prove after suffering their second defeat of the season against Bosham on Boxing Day. THe Sids' didn't disappoint again - with Callum Dowdell opening the scoring after just six minutes.

Pearce's side return to the Rec tomorrow (2pm) taking on Surrey side Alfold, who currently sit second bottom.

In the SCFL Division One, Selsey slipped into the bottom half of the table after their Monday match against Storrington was postponed.

THe Blues were leading 3-2 deep into the second half when Swans' striker Greg Clark

suffered a broken leg.

After a delay of two hours for an ambulance to arrive, the match officials called the match off shortly after. All at the club wish the player a speedy recovery.

THe Blues return to action tomorrow when they travel to Haywards Heath to play struggling St Francis Rangers (3pm), who are second bottom of the league with only nine points from 21 played.

Rocks and Lions face important cup games

BOGNOR and Pagham are still in the hunt for silverware in the Sussex Senior Cup. THe competition sees the top non-league sides in the county face off against each other with the final being played at Brighton and Hove Albion's Amex stadium.

Bognor are in action first, travelling to SCFL Premier leaders Shoreham for a quarter final on Tuesday (7.45pm).

With the Rocks two divisions above their opponents, it could see manager Jamie Howell give some of his fringe players a run out. However, he told THe Post, he still wants to win the match in the hope it could lead to another Amex appearance in May. Bognor boss Jamie Howell said: "Every year we want to do well in this competition.

"I always try and win every game for the

football club.

"Last year we were fighting on too many fronts to make it a priority. But I would rather that than be out of every competition by January."

Pagham are also in action, drawn against Brighton and Hove Albion's development squad in the third round.

THe match was originally scheduled for before Christmas and then pushed back to this week.

But due to the Seagulls' commitments in the FA Premier League under-23's competition, the game has been rescheduled again for Wednesday, January 18, at Pagham's Nyetimber Lane. All are welcome.

THe winners will have a home tie against Crowborough Athletic in the quarter finals..

Bognor aiming for magnificent seven unbeaten against Town Next Game

Tim Ridgway Football sport@sussexpost.co.uk BOGNOR will be looking to make it seven unbeaten in all competitions when they wecome in-form Billericay Town to Nyewood Lane tomorrow (3pm).

THe Rocks went in to 2017 top of the Ryman Premier after collecting five points from a possible nine over the festive period.

A 1-0 win away at Met Police on New Year's Eve was sandwiched between two draws against promotion rivals Havant and Waterlooville and fellow Sussex side Worthing.

With other sides around them slipping up, it leaves the Rocks one point clear at the top with more than half the season gone.

Manager Jamie Howell said: "Five points from nine I think was an excellent return, particularly when you think we were playing two local rivals and two of those games were away from home.

"What the Christmas break did show was that anyone can beat anyone in the league.

THere's been some funny results. I'm delighted we stayed unbeaten."

THe festive period kicked off with a top of the table clash against Hampshire rivals Havant in front of a bumper Nyewood crowd of more than 1,300 on Boxing Day. After falling behind in the first half, Ed Sanders slotted in James Fraser's cross on the

hour mark to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the big-spending rivals.

THen the Rocks' travelled to Imber Court to play Met Police on New Year's Eve. Bognor had plenty of chances to win the match. But it took them until the second minute of injury time to get the winner - with young debutant Oscar Haynes Brown's shot bouncing in off the goalkeeper.

THat win took the Rocks top - and they stayed there after an impressive defensive performance sealed a 1-1 draw in front of nearly 1,800 at Worthing on Bank Holiday Monday. Jimmy Wild scored the goal for Howell's side.

THat made it six unbeaten - but Bognor will face a tough opponent in Billericay as they bid to extend that to seven.

THe Essex side are currently mid-table but come into the match in good form, after a 2-1 win against Canvey Island was followed up by an impressive victory against Tonbridge Angels on Monday.

Howell said: "Billericay have had injection of money in the last couple of months.

"THey've signed six new players, are rebuilding the squad further and looking to have a real go in the second half of the season.

"Sometimes teams are looking for time for gel when that happens.

"THey are strong and powerful and we will need to be at our best to get a result."

Howell looking for fresh faces BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell is on look out for some fresh faces to help the Rocks' promotion push.

At the halfway stage of the season, the Nyewood Lane side have exceeded expectations and sit one point clear at the top of the Ryman Premier.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast throughout January, Howell has made it clear he is looking for reinforcements to help his side over the line.

Speaking to THe Post, Howell said: "THe last month or so we have spluttered a bit.

"We have got people that need a bit of a break, but due to injuries, we've had to keep relying on them. THey need to recharge and rest.

"We've also got a few lads coming back who need more game time before they are fully ready.

"I think we need to get some fresh legs and refresh the situation. But as always that's easier said than done.

"THe aim as always is to get quality not quantity.

"We've been grinding results out recently but we need to get back to the consistency we had earlier in the season."

Howell's Christmas plans suffered due to much-needed 1-0 away win.

Owell said: "Oscar was [assistant manager] illnesses to Gary Charman, Chad Field and Darin Kilpatrick's pick. He has worked with Lorenzo Dolcetti.

But he was boosted by the return of Brighton Oscar in the England School's team. Darin knew we were short and thought Oscar would and Hove Albion loanee Dylan Barnett.

THe under-19 Irish international came back suit us.

"He lives in Haywards Heath which is not from seeing family to feature on the left side of close but we like the look of him. midfield in the last two games "He's definitely one for the future and we're Another new face who has made an immediate impact is Oscar Haynes Brown, delighted with the return so far." who is a student at Ardingly College.

THe teenager made his first appearance for the Rocks at Met Police on Saturday.

I'M writing this after a busy Christmas period where we played three games in a week.

If you've said to me beforehand that we would come out of it unbeaten, picking up five points out of nine and sitting top of the league then I would have been very pleased.

Out of all the results, I was most disappointed with the 1-1 draw against Havant as I thought we did enough to win.

One of the biggest surprises was how well Calvin Davies played in the centre of the park.

When Jamie announced the team I was a little surprised as I wasn't sure if Calv could dictate play. But in fairness to him he was excellent, breaking up play and setting the tone.

I thought we were unlucky to go a goal down but we got back into it. And as the game went on I thought only one team would win it.

THen it was on to Met Police which was a bit like a basketball game really - we had most of the ball and were pushing forward in attack and then they tried to counter on the break.

As the game went on we were getting frustrated. But the young lad Oscar came off the bench to get the winner and we travelled back to Nyewood with all three points.

THen it was on to Worthing on Monday. THey are a good team, particularly at home on the artificial pitch and we were not at our best.

We did well to take the lead through Jimmy Wild but we knew they would come back at us.

Darren Lincoln in goal and Harvey Whyte I thought were outstanding with their defensive work.

On reflection, the draw was a good result in the end.

Combined with the win at home, that's four points we've picked up off Worthing this season. If we do that against every one, that's league winning form.

I did have to come off against Worthing due to an ongoing injury. I need an operation on it at some point.

It's to do with the cartilage in my knee and having played a game on a soft pitch at Met Police, another game two days later on a hard surface probably wasn't the best thing for it.

But with a bit of rest it should be fine. It's just something that I know will happen every now and again.

I'm confident I'll be ready for the game tomorrow against Billericay, which we know will be tough.

Every now and again a team from Essex gets a bit of money mid-season and they make a real push for promotion.

THere's a lot of history between the two sides, especially between the fans when we've played up there.

So I'm sure everyone's looking forward to getting them down to our place where I think we're due a performance.

THen we've got the Sussex Senior Cup quarter final at Shoreham.

Without wanting to sound as though we're bigger than it, it's always been a competition that's got a little lost, particularly last year when we were going strong in the league, FA Cup and FA Trophy.

But this year that's different - we are in the quarter finals and playing against a side two leagues below us.

I've got to the final at THe Amex twice now and lost 3-0 both times so I'd love to get there again this year and go one better.

THe game against Shoreham also falls on my birthday, so it's definitely something that I'm looking forward to.

Looking ahead at the games we have left this season, there are 21 to play and if we can win 14 or 15 then we will win the league. THat's my goal for the team this year.

We have come so close in recent years in the playoffs but we are in pole position at the moment and there's no reason why if we perform well we cannot stay there.

Personally, I just hope to stay fit and keeping being a part of it.
