Museum of California Celebrates Learning Black History Year-Round Women’s History Month With First Black Chemistry Instructor of College of Hawaii, Virtual Exhibits Of Women Artists Alice Augusta Ball, Discovered Treatment for Leprosy Oakland (BCN)

The Oakland Museum of California is celebrating Women’s History Month, highlighting the works of women artists by making available a collection of virtual exhibits. Although the museum remains closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, museum exhibits celebrating a diverse collection of women artists. Congress designated March as Women’s History Month in 1987 -- according to Wikipedia -- after a successful lobbying campaign by the Santa Rosabased National Women’s History Alliance. The designation coincided with International Women’s Day on March 8. The artists the museum is featuring include the fol-

The year was 1916. Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy, was rampant worldwide. Patients in Hawaii checked in to Kalihi Hospital desperately seeking any type of treatment. At that time, Harry T. Hollmann was an assistant surgeon at Kalihi. The disease had become the “problem he needed to solve.” Treatments had evolved slightly through the use of chaulmoogra oil, a substance derived from the seeds of a tropical evergreen tree. The ideal treatment though, would be a solution made from the active components of the oil that could be injected without side effects. As it was, results from the treatment he was giving were inconsistent. Unfortunately, Ball did not witness the full impact of her discovery or have the opportunifall of 1916, she returned home to Seattle, where she died after complications resulting from inhaling chlorine gas in a lab teaching accident. But Dean never gave her credit as the creator of the solution. discovered Ball in a 1922 medical journal and read about her development of the injection. Today, a dedication plaque honoring Ball’s contributions to medicine sits under the University’s only chaulmoogra tree. Hansen’s disease is now completely curable with a course of multiple drug therapy using three antibiotics, in addition to other medicines to prevent complications.

Student Loan Debt Strangling Black, Latino Students, Experts Say By Manny Otiko California Black Media

Supporters of student loan forgiveness participated in a seminar last week that offered a deep dive into the debt crisis affecting about 30% of people through federal borrowing programs. One of the speakers at the seminar was Rep. Ro Khanna (D-13), a progressive legislator who represents a Congressional district covering parts Silicon Valley. Khanna supports federal legislation that would forgive student debt, which has mushroomed into a more than $1 trillion problem. According to a Student Borrower Protection Center fact sheet, student debt holders default at a rate four times higher than mortgage holders. Ethnic Media Services, a San Francisco-based advocacy organization for minorityowned news publishers, organized the event. Khanna said that in California, the problem started ballooning during the years after Ronald Reagan’s governorship of California when the former president cut spending on higher education. Before that, public colleges had been practically free in California, but burden to students and that’s when debt started climbing. On the campaign trail, Pres. Joe Biden said he would cancel student loan debt, according to Khanna. But right now, legislators are still haggling over the amount. Biden says he’s willing to forgive $10,000 in debt. Khanna says he thinks any loan forgiveness program should only be available to people who earn an annual salary of less than $125,000. According to Khanna, erasing student debt will free up trillions of dollars that can be spent on mortgages, car loans and consumer goods. A 2018 study released by the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College claims that cancelling student debt “would translate to an increase of $86 billion to $108 billion a year, on average, to GDP.” “It will lift the burden on the next generation,” he said. He also said that college education is not the only path to a good-paying job, and some students should look at credentialing and proternative paths to good-paying careers. Kat Welbeck, a civil rights counsel at the Student Borrower Protection Center, said lack of generational wealth plays a role in student debt. She pointed out that Black and Latino students tend to have higher debt burdens because their families don’t have the college, so they have to borrow more money. Unfortunately, this creates a vicious economic cycle and prevents them from creating generational wealth. Crushing student debt can keep Black and Latino students in a social bracket. “Black and Latino students take longer to pay debt back,” said Welbeck. Defaulting on college loans can lead to another set of problems such as higher interest rates, being denied credit, or even being rejected from a job. Welbeck said her organization has also noticed that Black and Latino students with leges also have lower graduation rates. California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber last week released the state’s third report counting the number of women on corporate boards in compliance with Senate Bill 826, which became law in 2018. The report found an increase in the number of women on the boards of publicly held corporations based in California. Each one has at least one woman on its board of directors.
